Thermoelectric Properties of Carbon Nanotubes

Thermoelectric (TE) material is a class of materials that can convert heat to electrical energy directly in a solid-state-device without any moving parts and that is environmentally friendly. The study and development of TE materials have grown quickly in the past decade. However, their development goes slowly by the lack of cheap TE materials with high Seebeck coefficient and good electrical conductivity. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are particularly attractive as TE materials because of at least three reasons: (1) CNTs possess various band gaps depending on their structure, (2) CNTs represent unique one-dimensional carbon materials which naturally satisfies the conditions of quantum confinement effect to enhance the TE efficiency and (3) CNTs provide us with a platform for developing lightweight and flexible TE devices due to their mechanical properties. The TE power factor is reported to reach 700–1000 W / m K 2 for both p-type and n-type CNTs when purified to contain only doped semiconducting CNT species. Therefore, CNTs are promising for a variety of TE applications in which the heat source is unlimited, such as waste heat or solar heat although their figure of merit Z T is still modest (0.05 at 300 K). In this paper, we review in detail from the basic concept of TE field to the fundamental TE properties of CNTs, as well as their applications. Furthermore, the strategies are discussed to improve the TE properties of CNTs. Finally, we give our perspectives on the tremendous potential of CNTs-based TE materials and composites.

Transition metal silicide surface grafting by multiple functional groups and green optimization by mechanochemistry

Chromium disilicide (CrSi2) particles were synthesized by using an arc melting furnace followed by mechanical milling. XRD and DLS analyses show that aggregates of around 3 μm containing about 10 nm sized crystallites were obtained. These aggregates were functionalized in solution by coupling agents with different anchoring groups (silane, phosphonic acid, alkene and thiol) in order to disperse them into an organic polymer. Dodecene was used to modify the CrSi2 surface during mechano-synthesis in a grinding bowl with quite little solvent quantity and the optimization step allowed the aggregate size to be reduced to 500 nm. A thermoelectric composite was then made of alkene CrSi2 grafted samples and poly(p-phénylène-2,6-benzobisoxazole). This study opens the route for new surface grafting of intermetallic silicides for applications linked to electronics and/or energy.

Selenium-Substituted Diketopyrrolopyrrole Polymer for High-Performance p-Type Organic Thermoelectric Materials

Development of high-performance organic thermoelectric (TE) materials is of vital importance for flexible power generation and solid-cooling applications. Demonstrated here is the significant enhancement in TE performance of selenium-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives. Along with strong intermolecular interactions and high Hall mobilities of 1.0-2.3 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 in doping-states for polymers, PDPPSe-12 exhibits a maximum power factor and ZT of up to 364 μW m^-1  K^-2 and 0.25, respectively. The performance is more than twice that of the sulfur-based DPP derivative and represents the highest value for p-type organic thermoelectric materials based on high-mobility polymers. These results reveal that selenium substitution can serve as a powerful strategy towards rationally designed thermoelectric polymers with state-of-the-art performances.

Improved Alignment of PEDOT:PSS Induced by in-situ Crystallization of "Green" Dimethylsulfone Molecules to Enhance the Polymer Thermoelectric Performance

Dimethylsulfone (DMSO2), a small organic molecule, was observed to induce the alignment of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) via in-situ crystallization in PEDOT:PSS mixture, which was verified by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A chemically stable dopant, DMSO2, remarkably raised the electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS film, which was fabricated from pre-mixed solution of PEDOT:PSS and DMSO2, up to 1080 S/cm, and more importantly, such a PEDOT:PSS film showed a long-term humidity stability and it retained near 90% electric conductivity after 60 days, suggesting DMSO2 is promising for an eco-friendly alternative to replace dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and various acids dopants that have been widely employed to dope and post-treat PEDOT:PSS. Pairwise interaction energies and free energy of solvation between PEDOT:PSS and DMSO2 were calculated by first-principles and molecular mechanics, respectively, revealing the mechanism of DMSO2 in enhancing the electrical conductivity.

Enhanced Humid Reliability of Organic Thermoelectrics via Crosslinking with Glycerol

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has shown significant achievements in organic thermoelectrics (TEs) as an alternative for inorganic counterparts. However, PEDOT:PSS films have limited practical applications because their performance is sensitive to humidity. Crosslinking additives are utilized to improve the reliability of PEDOT:PSS film through enhancing hydrophobicity; among these, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a widely-used additive. However, ether groups in PEG induce water molecules in the film through the hydrogen bond, which deteriorates the TE reliability. Here, we enhance the TE reliability of the PEDOT:PSS film using glycerol as an additive through the crosslinking reaction between the hydroxyl group in glycerol and the sulfonic acid in PEDOT:PSS. The TE reliability (1/Power factor (PF)) of PEG solution-treated PEDOT:PSS film (PEG solution-treated film) was 57% of its initial absolute value (0 h), after 288 h (two weeks) in a humid environment (95% relative humidity, 27 °C temperature). On the other hand, the glycerol solution-treated PEDOT:PSS film (glycerol solution-treated film) exhibited superior TE reliability and preserved 75% of its initial 1/PF. Furthermore, glycerol vapor treatment enabled the film to have stronger TE humid reliability, maintaining 82% of its initial 1/PF, with the same condition. This enhancement is attributed to the increased hydrophobicity and lower oxygen content of the glycerol vapor-treated PEDOT:PSS film (glycerol vapor-treated film), which provides little change in the chemical composition of PEDOT:PSS.

Achieving Out-of-Plane Thermoelectric Figure of Merit ZT = 1.44 in a p-Type Bi2Te3/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 Superlattice Film with Low Interfacial Resistance

Recently, low-dimensional superlattice films have attracted significant attention because of their low dimensionality and anisotropic thermoelectric (TE) properties such as the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. For these superlattice structures, both electrons and phonons show highly anisotropic behavior and exhibit much stronger interface scattering in the out-of-plane direction of the films compared to the in-plane direction. However, no detailed information is available in the literature for the out-of-plane TE properties of the superlattice-based films. In this report, we present the out-of-plane Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and electrical properties of p-type Bi₂Te₃/Bi_0.5Sb_1.5Te₃ (bismuth telluride/bismuth antimony telluride, BT/BST) superlattice films in the temperature range of 77-500 K. Because of the synergistic combination of the energy filtering effect and low interfacial resistance of the superlattice structure, an impressively high ZT of 1.44 was achieved at 400 K for the 200 nm-thick p-type BT/BST superlattice film, corresponding to a 43% ZT enhancement compared to the pristine p-BST films with the same thickness.

Solution-Processed Carbon Nanotube Buckypapers for Foldable Thermoelectric Generators

Freestanding single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) buckypapers with thicknesses of ∼30 μm are fabricated using a simple bar-coating process. The Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of the SWCNT buckypapers are affected by the composition of the dispersion solvent mixture. The maximum p-type power factor of a SWCNT buckypaper is 411 ± 13 μW m^-1 K^-2. The inverse relationship between the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of the SWCNT buckypapers may be explained by the number density of junctions between the SWCNT bundles. Using the SWCNT buckypapers, which can be cut, folded, and pasted, a foldable thermoelectric generator is fabricated. The thermoelectric generator folded to an area of 2.25 cm² exhibits a maximum power of 10.3 μW at a vertical temperature difference of 30 K.

Transparent and Hybrid Multilayer Films with Improved Thermoelectric Performance by Chalcogenide-Interlayer-Induced Transport Enhancement

Transparent thermoelectric thin films for efficient heat energy conversion can be extensively applied in healthcare and small electronics. We report a strategy for the fabrication of organic/inorganic hybrid multilayer films with improved thermoelectric performances. As an organic layer, a highly conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is deposited after a solvent treatment. An inorganic interlayer consisting of PEDOT-coated SnSeTe nanosheets (PEDOT-SnSeTe nanosheets) is introduced between the PEDOT:PSS layers to fabricate an alternately deposited PEDOT:PSS/PEDOT-SnSeTe nanosheets/PEDOT:PSS (PSP) multilayer film. To demonstrate the interlayer-induced thermoelectric behaviors, the thermoelectric properties and corresponding carrier transport properties of single-layer, bilayer, and multilayer films are investigated. The inorganic layer influences the intrinsic conduction toward a favorable value for an improved thermoelectric transport. A considerably increased thermoelectric power factor of 110 μW·m^-1·K^-2 is achieved for a PSP multilayer film fabricated at 4000 rpm, greatly higher than that of the PEDOT:PSS and solution-mixed SnSeTe/PEDOT:PSS composite film. The multilayer strategy proposed in this study is promising for the fabrication of transparent and hybrid thin-film thermoelectrics with high thermoelectric performances.

Backbone Structure Effect on the Thermoelectric Properties of IDT-Based p-Type Conjugated Polymers

Four conjugated polymers are synthesized through indacenodithiohene (IDT) unit copolymerized with thiophene and thiophene derivatives. Indacenodithiohene-co-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (IDT-TT) and indacenodithiohene-co-trans-1,2-di(2-thienyl)ethylene (IDT-TVT) exhibit better charge transport mobilities than indacenodithiohene-co-thiophene (IDT-T) and indacenodithiohene-co-3,4-ethoxylene dioxythiophene (IDT-EDOT), and also display superior thermoelectric properties after doping. Theoretical calculations suggest that IDT-EDOT and IDT-TVT have better coplanarities; the inferior performance for IDT-EDOT might be due to its low molecular weight. Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning that via the synergistic effect of two dopants (CN6CP, CuTFSI), the electrical conductivities of the polymers are further improved. The XPS data shows that the coordination interaction between copper ion and the cyano groups of CN6CP introduces cupric ions into the polymer films, which leads to the increase of the doping ratio.

Carbon nanotube fibers with enhanced longitudinal carrier mobility for high-performance all-carbon thermoelectric generators

With the increase in practical interest in flexible thermoelectric (TE) generators, the demand for high-performance alternatives to brittle TE materials is growing. Herein, we have demonstrated wet-spun CNT fibers with high TE performance by systematically controlling the longitudinal carrier mobility without a significant change in the carrier concentration. The carrier mobility optimized by CNT alignment increases the electrical conductivity without decreasing the thermopower, thus improving the power factor. On further adjusting the charge carriers via mild annealing, the CNT fibers exhibit a high power factor of 432 μW m-1 K-2. Based on the excellent TE performance and shape advantages for modular design of the CNT fiber, the all-carbon based flexible TE generator without an additional metal electrode has been fabricated. The flexible TE generator based on 40 pairs of p- and n-type CNT fibers shows the maximum power density of 15.4 and 259 μW g-1 at temperature differences (ΔT) of 5 and 20 K, respectively, currently one of the highest values reported for TE generators based on flexible materials. The strategy proposed here can improve the performance of flexible TE fibers by optimizing the carrier mobility without a change in the carrier concentration, and shows great potential for flexible TE generators.

Unprecedented Enhancement of Thermoelectric Power Factor Induced by Pressure in Small-Molecule Organic Semiconductors

Establishing the relationship between pressure and heat-electricity interconversion in van der Waals bonded small-molecule organic semiconductors is critical not only in designing flexible thermoelectric materials, but also in developing organic electronics. Here, based on first-principles calculations and using naphthalene as a case study, an unprecedented elevation of p-type thermoelectric power factor induced by pressure is demonstrated; and the power factor increases by 267% from 159.5 µW m^-1 K^-2 under ambient conditions to 585.8 µW m^-1 K^-2 at 2.1 GPa. The underlying mechanism is attributed to the dramatic inhibition of lattice-vibration-caused electronic scattering. Furthermore, it is revealed that both restraining low-frequency intermolecular vibrational modes and increasing intermolecular electronic coupling are two essential factors that effectively suppress the electron-phonon scattering. From the standpoint of molecular design, these two conditions can be achieved by extending the π-conjugated backbones, introducing long alkyl sidechains to the π-cores, and substituting heteroatoms in the π-cores.

Thermoelectric enhancement in multilayer thin-films of tin chalcogenide nanosheets/conductive polymers

Te-Substituted SnSe nanosheets (Te-s-SnSe NSs) with a lateral size of ∼500 nm are fabricated and their surfaces are then coated with a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT nanolayer. The 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene loading is optimized for achieving outstanding thermoelectric performance and the resulting PEDOT-coated nanosheets (PEDOT-Te-s-SnSe NSs) are alternately stacked with PEDOT:poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) using a solution-processable method to obtain multilayer inorganic/organic composite films. The as-fabricated multilayer films exhibit outstanding electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. This is due to the enhanced interchain interaction and charge-carrier hopping of the stretched PEDOT chains as well as the presumable energy-filtering effect at the interfacial potential barriers between inorganic and organic layers. The multilayer film consisting of three-repeated stacking allows a maximum thermoelectric power factor of 222 μW m-1 K-2, which is 5.5 times larger than that achieved with pristine PEDOT:PSS. This strategy of combining inorganic and organic materials into multilayer films is promising for the achievement of high-performance thin-film thermoelectrics.

Will organic thermoelectrics get hot?

The generally low energy density from most heat sources-the Sun, Earth as well as most human activities-implies that solid-state thermoelectric devices are the most versatile heat harvesters since, unlike steam engines, they can be used on a small scale and at small temperature differences. In this opinion piece, we first discuss the materials requirements for the widespread use of thermoelectrics. We argue that carbon-based materials, such as conducting polymers and carbon nanotubes, are particularly suited for large area and low-temperature operation applications, as they are abundant, low-toxicity and easy to process. We combine experimentally observed macro-trends and basic thermoelectric relations to evaluate the major performance limitations of this technology thus far and propose a number of avenues to take the thermoelectric efficiency of organic materials beyond the state of the art. First, we emphasize how charge carrier mobility, rather than charge density, is currently limiting performance, and discuss how to improve mobility by exploiting anisotropy, high persistence length materials and composites with long and well-dispersed carbon nanotubes. We also show that reducing thermal conductivity could double efficiency while reducing doping requirements. Finally, we discuss several ways in which composites could further boost performance, introducing the concept of interface engineering to produce phonon stack-electron tunnel composites. Hybrid Energy Harvesters: Toward Sustainable Energy Harvesting

Recently, sustainable green energy harvesting systems have been receiving great attention for their potential use in self-powered smart wireless sensor network (WSN) systems. In particular, though the developed WSN systems are able to advance public good, very high and long-term budgets will be required in order to use them to supply electrical energy through temporary batteries or connecting power cables. This report summarizes recent significant progress in the development of hybrid nanogenerators for a sustainable energy harvesting system that use natural and artificial energies such as solar, wind, wave, heat, machine vibration, and automobile noise. It starts with a brief introduction of energy harvesting systems, and then summarizes the different hybrid energy harvesting systems: integration of mechanical and photovoltaic energy harvesters, integration of mechanical and thermal energy harvesters, integration of thermal and photovoltaic energy harvesters, and others. In terms of the reported hybrid nanogenerators, a systematic summary of their structures, working mechanisms, and output performances is provided. Specifically, electromagnetic induction, triboelectric, piezoelectric, photovoltaic, thermoelectric, and pyroelectric effects are reviewed on the basis of the individual and hybrid power performances of hybrid nanogenerators and their practical applications with various device designs. Finally, the perspectives on and challenges in developing high performance and sustainable hybrid nanogenerator systems are presented.

Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Thermoelectric Materials and Devices

Hybrid organic-inorganic materials have been considered as a new candidate in the field of thermoelectric materials since the last decade owing to their great potential to enhance the thermoelectric performance by utilizing the low thermal conductivity of organic materials and the high Seebeck coefficient, and high electrical conductivity of inorganic materials. Herein, we provide an overview of interfacial engineering in the synthesis of various organic-inorganic thermoelectric hybrid materials, along with the dimensional design for tuning their thermoelectric properties. Interfacial effects are examined in terms of nanostructures, physical properties, and chemical doping between the inorganic and organic components. Several key factors which dictate the thermoelectric efficiency and performance of various electronic devices are also discussed, such as the thermal conductivity, electric transportation, electronic band structures, and band convergence of the hybrid materials.

Tuning charge transport dynamics via clustering of doping in organic semiconductor thin films

A significant challenge in the rational design of organic thermoelectric materials is to realize simultaneously high electrical conductivity and high induced-voltage in response to a thermal gradient, which is represented by the Seebeck coefficient. Conventional wisdom posits that the polymer alone dictates thermoelectric efficiency. Herein, we show that doping - in particular, clustering of dopants within conjugated polymer films - has a profound and predictable influence on their thermoelectric properties. We correlate Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of iodine-doped poly(3-hexylthiophene) and poly[2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione-3,6-diyl)-alt-(2,2';5',2'';5'',2'''-quaterthiophen-5,5'''-diyl)] films with Kelvin probe force microscopy to highlight the role of the spatial distribution of dopants in determining overall charge transport. We fit the experimental data to a phonon-assisted hopping model and found that the distribution of dopants alters the distribution of the density of states and the Kang-Snyder transport parameter. These results highlight the importance of controlling dopant distribution within conjugated polymer films for thermoelectric and other electronic applications.

Flexible Thermoelectric Materials and Generators: Challenges and Innovations

The urgent need for ecofriendly, stable, long-lifetime power sources is driving the booming market for miniaturized and integrated electronics, including wearable and medical implantable devices. Flexible thermoelectric materials and devices are receiving increasing attention, due to their capability to convert heat into electricity directly by conformably attaching them onto heat sources. Polymer-based flexible thermoelectric materials are particularly fascinating because of their intrinsic flexibility, affordability, and low toxicity. There are other promising alternatives including inorganic-based flexible thermoelectrics that have high energy-conversion efficiency, large power output, and stability at relatively high temperature. Herein, the state-of-the-art in the development of flexible thermoelectric materials and devices is summarized, including exploring the fundamentals behind the performance of flexible thermoelectric materials and devices by relating materials chemistry and physics to properties. By taking insights from carrier and phonon transport, the limitations of high-performance flexible thermoelectric materials and the underlying mechanisms associated with each optimization strategy are highlighted. Finally, the remaining challenges in flexible thermoelectric materials are discussed in conclusion, and suggestions and a framework to guide future development are provided, which may pave the way for a bright future for flexible thermoelectric devices in the energy market.

Synthesis and Thermoelectric Properties of Selenium Nanoparticles Coated with PEDOT:PSS

We synthesized a hybrid nanocomposite comprised of selenium nanoparticles coated with a thin layer of a conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), and studied its thermoelectric properties. The conductive polymer layer on the surface of nanoparticles in the composites formed a percolating network running between the stacked nanoparticles, exhibiting an electrical conductivity close to or higher than that of pure polymer. The thermoelectric power factor of the resulting composite was higher than that of individual polymer or selenium nanoparticles. We further increased the electrical conductivity of the composite by thermal annealing, thereby improving the power factor to 15 μW/cmK² which is nine times higher than that of the polymer.

Boosting the Seebeck Coefficient for Organic Coordination Polymers: Role of Doping-Induced Polaron Band Formation

Organic polymers are becoming emerging thermoelectric materials. Tremendous progress has been achieved for p-type doping, but efficient n-type organic materials are still rare. By investigating potassium-doped n-type poly(nickel-ethylenetetrathiolate) using density functional theory coupled with Boltzmann transport equation, we find that (i) formation of the electron polaron band (EPB) split from the conduction band (CB) dominates electron transport; (ii) at low doping concentration, the upper CB gets involved in transport in addition to the EPB as the temperature rises, leading to a highly elevated Seebeck coefficient and power factor; and (iii) at even higher temperature, because the CB starts to dominate, the Seebeck coefficient levels off and then decreases with temperature. Such an "exotic" nonmonotonic temperature effect has been found in experiment but has never been explained. We find that such behavior is primarily due to a polaron effect. A doping-induced polaron band can be employed to boost the Seebeck coefficient, making the organic coordination polymer a peculiar n-type thermoelectric material.

Ion Electron-Coupled Functionality in Materials and Devices Based on Conjugated Polymers

The coupling between charge accumulation in a conjugated polymer and the ionic charge compensation, provided from an electrolyte, defines the mode of operation in a vast array of different organic electrochemical devices. The most explored mixed organic ion-electron conductor, serving as the active electrode in these devices, is poly(3,4-ethyelenedioxythiophene) doped with polystyrelensulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). In this progress report, scientists of the Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University review some of the achievements derived over the last two decades in the field of organic electrochemical devices, in particular including PEDOT:PSS as the active material. The recently established understanding of the volumetric capacitance and the mixed ion-electron charge transport properties of PEDOT are described along with examples of various devices and phenomena utilizing this ion-electron coupling, such as the organic electrochemical transistor, ionic-electronic thermodiffusion, electrochromic devices, surface switches, and more. One of the pioneers in this exciting research field is Prof. Olle Inganäs and the authors of this progress report wish to celebrate and acknowledge all the fantastic achievements and inspiration accomplished by Prof. Inganäs all since 1981.

Effect of polymer nanolayers on tin-chalcogenide nanosheet/conductive polymer flexible composite films and their enhanced thermoelectric performance

The chemical exfoliation of SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets is performed via a solid-state reaction, ball-milling, lithium intercalation, and a hydrothermal exfoliation reaction from atomic materials, and the potential of flexible thermoelectric composite films for practical applications is demonstrated. The exfoliated SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets are very thin, ∼300 nm in lateral size, and coated with nanosize poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), which exhibits great affinity to the PEDOT:PSS matrix compared with the SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets without PEDOT coating. The enhanced thermoelectric performance can be explained by the fact that the PEDOT nano-coating on the surface of the SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets contributes to the excellent distribution of the SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets in the composite system. The thermoelectric performance is also enhanced with the increase of the PEDOT-coated SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets, and a PEDOT-coated SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheet/PEDOT:PSS composite with 20 wt% of PEDOT-coated SnSe0.97Te0.03 nanosheets exhibits a maximum figure of merit (ZT) of 0.18, which is ∼61% higher than that of the composite sample without the PEDOT coating process. The results provide a promising strategy for inorganic/organic composite-based efficient thermoelectrics.

Temperature effect on vibrational properties of crystalline p-quaterphenyl

Vibrational properties of the crystalline p-quaterphenyl at low temperature are investigated by Raman scattering. The temperature dependent vibrational behaviors associated with the intra- and intermolecular terms are analyzed in detail. The order-disorder transition makes significant impacts on the energies, widths, and intensities of the vibrational modes, and the drastic splits of the modes mainly result from the sudden decline of the peak widths. Meanwhile, the intensity ratio of the 1280-cm^-1 and 1220-cm^-1 mode exhibits anomalous tendency around the transition temperature, as well as the frequency separations between them and between the higher energy mode and the lower energy mode around 1600 cm^-1. Thus, they still can well indicate the molecular planarity in the low temperature conditions. However, the intensity ratio of the two modes around 1600 cm^-1 is no longer to be a good indicator of this transition due to the bare anomalous behavior around the transition temperature. Our work is of important significance for understanding the internal vibrational properties of p-quaterphenyl, and it also provides considerable supports for the further study of this material.

Effects of Disorder on Thermoelectric Properties of Semiconducting Polymers

Organic materials have attracted recent interest as thermoelectric (TE) converters due to their low cost and ease of fabrication. We examine the effects of disorder on the TE properties of semiconducting polymers based on the Gaussian disorder model (GDM) for site energies while employing Pauli's master equation approach to model hopping between localized sites. Our model is in good agreement with experimental results and a useful tool to study hopping transport. We show that stronger overlap between sites can improve the electrical conductivity without adversely affecting the Seebeck coefficient. We find that positional disorder aids the formation of new conduction paths with an increased probability of carriers in high energy sites, leading to an increase in electrical conductivity while leaving the Seebeck unchanged. On the other hand, energetic disorder leads to increased energy gaps between sites, hindering transport. This adversely affects conductivity while only slightly increasing Seebeck and results in lower TE power factors. Furthermore, positional correlation primarily affects conductivity, while correlation in site energies has no effect on TE properties of polymers. Our results also show that the Lorenz number increases with Seebeck coefficient, largely deviating from the Sommerfeld value, in agreement with experiments and in contrast to band conductors. We conclude that reducing energetic disorder and positional correlation, while increasing positional disorder can lead to higher TE power factors.

PEDOT: PSS Thermoelectric Generators Printed on Paper Substrates

Flexible electronics is a field gathering a growing interest among researchers and companies with widely varying applications, such as organic light emitting diodes, transistors as well as many different sensors. If the circuit should be portable or off-grid, the power sources available are batteries, supercapacitors or some type of power generator. Thermoelectric generators produce electrical energy by the diffusion of charge carriers in response to heat flux caused by a temperature gradient between junctions of dissimilar materials. As wearables, flexible electronics and intelligent packaging applications increase, there is a need for low-cost, recyclable and printable power sources. For such applications, printed thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are an interesting power source, which can also be combined with printable energy storage, such as supercapacitors. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate), or PEDOT:PSS, is a conductive polymer that has gathered interest as a thermoelectric material. Plastic substrates are commonly used for printed electronics, but an interesting and emerging alternative is to use paper. In this article, a printed thermoelectric generator consisting of PEDOT:PSS and silver inks was printed on two common types of paper substrates, which could be used to power electronic circuits on paper.

Evolution of Self-Organized Microcapsules with Variable Conductivities from Self-Assembled Nanoparticles at Interfaces

Self-organization dramatically affects the surface properties of materials on a macroscopic scale, such as wettability and adhesion. Fundamentally, it is equally interesting when self-organization at the nanoscale affects the bulk properties and thus provides a means to engineer the optoelectronic properties of the materials on larger scales. In this work, we report the evolution of conductive self-organized polymer microcapsules from a monomer emulsion droplet stabilized by a monolayer of conductive Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) via a mechanism resembling morphogenesis. The wall of the resulting conductive microcapsule has a honeycomb-like structure with highly oriented JNPs occupying each hollow cell. The JNPs consist of an electrically conductive lobe and an insulating lobe; because of their orientation and presence in the honeycomb, the conductivity of the microcapsule is greatly enhanced as compared to that of each of the constituting materials. This method can be universally applied to induce self-organization in conductive polymers forming by oxidative addition.

Making flexible spin caloritronic devices with interconnected nanowire networks

Spin caloritronics has recently emerged from the combination of spintronics and thermoelectricity. Here, we show that flexible, macroscopic spin caloritronic devices based on large-area interconnected magnetic nanowire networks can be used to enable controlled Peltier cooling of macroscopic electronic components with an external magnetic field. We experimentally demonstrate that three-dimensional CoNi/Cu multilayered nanowire networks exhibit an extremely high, magnetically modulated thermoelectric power factor up to 7.5 mW/K²m and large spin-dependent Seebeck and Peltier coefficients of -11.5 μV/K and -3.45 mV at room temperature, respectively. Our investigation reveals the possibility of performing efficient magnetic control of heat flux for thermal management of electronic devices and constitutes a simple and cost-effective pathway for fabrication of large-scale flexible and shapeable thermoelectric coolers exploiting the spin degree of freedom.

Ionic Liquids as Post-Treatment Agents for Simultaneous Improvement of Seebeck Coefficient and Electrical Conductivity in PEDOT:PSS Films

Ionic liquid (IL) post-treatment for thin films of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is employed for the simultaneous enhancement of Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities. Through systematic variation of the ILs, by changing the anions while keeping the cation unchanged, changes in thermoelectric, spectroscopic, and morphological properties are investigated by means of UV-vis spectroscopy and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) as a function of the IL concentration. The simultaneous enhancement in the two important thermoelectric properties is ascribed to the binary nature of the ILs, which complements that of PEDOT:PSS. The anions of the ILs primarily interact with the positively charged, conducting PEDOT, while the cations interact with negatively charged insulating PSS. Therefore, post-treatment with ILs allows for primary and secondary doping of PEDOT:PSS at the same time. Differences in the obtained Seebeck coefficients for the investigated ILs are ascribed to the chemical properties of the anions. Additionally, the choice of the latter has implications on the morphology of the treated PEDOT:PSS films regarding average π-π-stacking distances of PEDOT chains, PEDOT-to-PSS ratios, and edge-on-to-face-on ratios, influencing charge transport properties macroscopically. A morphological model is presented, highlighting the influence of each IL in comparison with pristine PEDOT:PSS films.

High performance n-type Ag2Se film on nylon membrane for flexible thermoelectric power generator

Researches on flexible thermoelectric materials usually focus on conducting polymers and conducting polymer-based composites; however, it is a great challenge to obtain high thermoelectric properties comparable to inorganic counterparts. Here, we report an n-type Ag₂Se film on flexible nylon membrane with an ultrahigh power factor ~987.4 ± 104.1 μWm^-1K^-2 at 300 K and an excellent flexibility (93% of the original electrical conductivity retention after 1000 bending cycles around a 8-mm diameter rod). The flexibility is attributed to a synergetic effect of the nylon membrane and the Ag₂Se film intertwined with numerous high-aspect-ratio Ag₂Se grains. A thermoelectric prototype composed of 4-leg of the Ag₂Se film generates a voltage and a maximum power of 18 mV and 460 nW, respectively, at a temperature difference of 30 K. This work opens opportunities of searching for high performance thermoelectric film for flexible thermoelectric devices.

Preparation and Thermoelectric Properties Study of Bipyridine-Containing Polyfluorene Derivative/SWCNT Composites

Polymer/inorganic thermoelectric composites have witnessed rapid progress in recent years, but most of the studies have focused on the traditional conducting polymers. The limited structures of traditional conducting polymers restrain the development of organic thermoelectric composites. Herein, we report the preparation and thermoelectric properties of a series of composites films based on SWCNTs and bipyridine-containing polyfluorene derivatives. The value of the power factor around 12 μW m-1 K-2 was achieved for the composite F8bpy/SWCNTs with a mass ratio of 50/50, and the maximum value of 62.3 μW m-1 K-2 was obtained when the mass ratio reached 10/90. Moreover, taking advantage of the bipyridine unit could chelate various kinds of metal ions to form polymer complexes. The enhanced power factor of 87.3 μW m-1 K-2 was obtained for composite F8bpy-Ni/SWCNTs with a mass ratio of 50/50. Finally, the thermoelectric properties of the bipyridine-containing polyfluorene derivative/SWCNT composites were conveniently tuned by chelating with different metal ions.

Effect of Alkyl Side Chain Length on Doping Kinetics, Thermopower, and Charge Transport Properties in Highly Oriented F4TCNQ-Doped PBTTT Films

Doping of polymer semiconductors such as poly(2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2- b]thiophene) (PBTTT) with acceptor molecules such as 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F₄TCNQ) is widely used to tune the charge transport and thermoelectric (TE) properties in thin films. However, the mechanism of dopant insertion in the polymer matrix, insertion kinetics, and the ultimate doping levels reached have been investigated only marginally. This contribution addresses the effect of alkyl side chain length on the doping mechanism of a series of PBTTTs with linear side chains ranging from n-octyl to n-octyldecyl. The study focuses on thin films oriented by high-temperature rubbing and sequentially doped in F₄TCNQ solution. Structure-property correlations are established as a function of side chain length by a combination of transmission electron microscopy, polarized UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, and charge transport/thermopower measurements. Intercalation of F₄TCNQ into the layers of side chains results in the expansion of the lattice along the side chains and the contraction along the π-stacking direction for all polymers. The extent of lattice expansion decreases with the increasing side chain length. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy demonstrates integer charge transfer for all investigated PBTTTs. The doping kinetics and the final doping level depend on both the side chain length and packing. Highly disordered n-octyl and crystalline n-octyldecyl side chain layers tend to hamper dopant diffusion in the side chain layers contrary to n-dodecyl side chains that can host the highest proportion of dopants. Consequently, the best TE properties are observed for C₁₂-PBTTT films. Alignment of the polymers significantly enhances the TE performance by increasing the charge conductivity and the thermopower along the rubbing direction. Aligned films of C₁₂-PBTTT show charge conductivities of 193 S cm^-1 along the rubbing direction and power factors of approximately 100 μW m^-1 K^-2 versus a few μW m^-1 K^-2 for nonoriented films.

Farming thermoelectric paper

Waste heat to electricity conversion using thermoelectric generators is emerging as a key technology in the forthcoming energy scenario. Carbon-based composites could unleash the as yet untapped potential of thermoelectricity by combining the low cost, easy processability, and low thermal conductivity of biopolymers with the mechanical strength and good electrical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Here we use bacteria in environmentally friendly aqueous media to grow large area bacterial nanocellulose (BC) films with an embedded highly dispersed CNT network. The thick films (≈10 μm) exhibit tuneable transparency and colour, as well as low thermal and high electrical conductivity. Moreover, they are fully bendable, can conformally wrap around heat sources and are stable above 500 K, which expands the range of potential uses compared to typical conducting polymers and composites. The high porosity of the material facilitates effective n-type doping, enabling the fabrication of a thermoelectric module from farmed thermoelectric paper. Because of vertical phase separation of the CNTs in the BC composite, the grown films at the same time serve as both the active layer and separating layer, insulating each thermoelectric leg from the adjacent ones. Last but not least, the BC can be enzymatically decomposed, completely reclaiming the embedded CNTs.

Bio-Integrated Wearable Systems: A Comprehensive Review

Bio-integrated wearable systems can measure a broad range of biophysical, biochemical, and environmental signals to provide critical insights into overall health status and to quantify human performance. Recent advances in material science, chemical analysis techniques, device designs, and assembly methods form the foundations for a uniquely differentiated type of wearable technology, characterized by noninvasive, intimate integration with the soft, curved, time-dynamic surfaces of the body. This review summarizes the latest advances in this emerging field of "bio-integrated" technologies in a comprehensive manner that connects fundamental developments in chemistry, material science, and engineering with sensing technologies that have the potential for widespread deployment and societal benefit in human health care. An introduction to the chemistries and materials for the active components of these systems contextualizes essential design considerations for sensors and associated platforms that appear in following sections. The subsequent content highlights the most advanced biosensors, classified according to their ability to capture biophysical, biochemical, and environmental information. Additional sections feature schemes for electrically powering these sensors and strategies for achieving fully integrated, wireless systems. The review concludes with an overview of key remaining challenges and a summary of opportunities where advances in materials chemistry will be critically important for continued progress.

Zr-MOF/Polyaniline Composite Films with Exceptional Seebeck Coefficient for Thermoelectric Material Applications

Controlling the polymerization of aniline in the presence of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) using polystyrene sulfonic acid as a dopant resulted in the formation of a new type of free-standing thermoelectric composite film. Polyaniline chains interpenetrate into the Zr-MOFs to enhance the crystallinity of polyaniline, resulting in an improved degree of electrical conductivity. In addition, the inherent porosity of the Zr-MOFs functions to suppress the increase in thermal conductivity, thus dramatically promoting a negative Seebeck coefficient. When 20 wt % Zr-MOF was used, a power factor of up to 664 μW/(m K²) was obtained, which was accompanied by a surprisingly large, negative Seebeck coefficient. The new class of MOF-based composites offers a new direction for developing new types of efficient thermoelectric materials.

Screen-Printed, Pure Carbon-Black Thermocouple Fabrication and Seebeck Coefficients

Thermocouples classically consist of two metals or semiconductor components that are joined at one end, where temperature is measured. Carbon black is a low-cost semiconductor with a Seebeck coefficient that depends on the structure of the carbon particles. Different carbon black screen-printing inks generally exhibit different Seebeck coefficients, and two can therefore be combined to realize a thermocouple. In this work, we used a set of four different commercially available carbon-black screen-printing inks to print all-carbon-black thermocouples. The outputs of these thermocouples were characterized and their Seebeck coefficients determined. We found that the outputs of pure carbon-black thermocouples are reasonably stable, linear, and quantitatively comparable to those of commercially available R- or S-type thermocouples. It is thus possible to fabricate thermocouples by an easily scalable, cost-efficient process that combines two low-cost materials.

Recent Progress in Thermoelectric Materials Based on Conjugated Polymers

Organic thermoelectric (TE) materials can directly convert heat to electricity, and they are emerging as new materials for energy harvesting and cooling technologies. The performance of TE materials mainly depends on the properties of materials, including the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability. Traditional TE materials are mostly based on low-bandgap inorganic compounds, such as bismuth chalcogenide, lead telluride, and tin selenide, while organic materials as promising TE materials are attracting more and more attention because of their intrinsic advantages, including cost-effectiveness, easy processing, low density, low thermal conductivity, and high flexibility. However, to meet the requirements of practical applications, the performance of organic TE materials needs much improvement. A variety of efforts have been made to enhance the performance of organic TE materials, including the modification of molecular structure, and chemical or electrochemical doping. In this review, we summarize recent progress in organic TE materials, and discuss the feasible strategies for enhancing the properties of organic TE materials for future energy-harvesting applications.

Identification of the incommensurate structure transition in biphenyl by Raman scattering

Raman scattering measurements are performed on crystalline biphenyl at low temperatures. The properties of the vibrational modes focused on the intra- and intermolecular terms are analyzed in detail. Nearly all of the vibration modes exhibit hardening and simultaneously sharpen with decreasing temperature, whereas the modes at around 250 cm^-1 and 1280 cm^-1 soften their energies as temperature is decreased. Moreover, all the internal modes have anomalous reversals at around 45 K on the frequencies, widths, and intensities, and below 45 K, several new internal modes appear. Results of the analyses indicate that the reemergence of the interring tilt angle of the molecules at 45 K has a significant impact on the vibrational properties of biphenyl. Our work thus paves interesting and essential groundwork for the further study of biphenyl.

Flexible layer-structured Bi2Te3 thermoelectric on a carbon nanotube scaffold

Inorganic chalcogenides are traditional high-performance thermoelectric materials. However, they suffer from intrinsic brittleness and it is very difficult to obtain materials with both high thermoelectric ability and good flexibility. Here, we report a flexible thermoelectric material comprising highly ordered Bi₂Te₃ nanocrystals anchored on a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) network, where a crystallographic relationship exists between the Bi₂Te₃ <[Formula: see text]> orientation and SWCNT bundle axis. This material has a power factor of ~1,600 μW m^-1 K^-2 at room temperature, decreasing to 1,100 μW m^-1 K^-2 at 473 K. With a low in-plane lattice thermal conductivity of 0.26 ± 0.03 W m^-1 K^-1, a maximum thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of 0.89 at room temperature is achieved, originating from a strong phonon scattering effect. The origin of the excellent flexibility and thermoelectric performance of the Bi₂Te₃-SWCNT material is attributed, by experimental and computational evidence, to its crystal orientation, interface and nanopore structure. Our results provide insight into the design and fabrication of high-performance flexible thermoelectric materials.

Direct Probing of Cross-Plane Thermal Properties of Atomic Layer Deposition Al2O3/ZnO Superlattice Films with an Improved Figure of Merit and Their Cross-Plane Thermoelectric Generating Performance

There is a recent interest in semiconducting superlattice films because their low dimensionality can increase the thermal power and phonon scattering at the interface in superlattice films. However, experimental studies in all cross-plane thermoelectric (TE) properties, including thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and electrical conductivity, have not been performed from these semiconducting superlattice films because of substantial difficulties in the direct measurement of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Unlike the conventional measurement method, we present a technique using a structure of sandwiched superlattice films between two embedded heaters as the heating source, and electrodes with two Cu plates, which directly enables the investigation of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity across the Al₂O₃/ZnO superlattice films, prepared by the atomic layer deposition method. Used in combination with the promising cross-plane four-point probe 3-ω method, our measurements and analysis demonstrate all cross-plane TE properties of Al₂O₃/ZnO superlattice films in the temperature range of 80 to 500 K. Our experimental methodology and the obtained results represent a significant advancement in the understanding of phonons and electrical transports in nanostructured materials, especially in semiconducting superlattice films in various temperature ranges.

The Investigation of the Seebeck Effect of the Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)-Tosylate with the Various Concentrations of an Oxidant

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-tosylate (PEDOT-Tos) can be synthesized through an in situ polymerization and doping process with iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate hexahydrate as an oxidant. Both the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity were modified by varying the concentration of the oxidant. We investigated the effects of varying the concentration of the oxidant on the particle sizes and doping (oxidation) levels of PEDOT-Tos for thermoelectric applications. We demonstrated that an increase in the oxidant enabled an expansion of the particle sizes and the doping levels of the PEDOT-Tos. The modification of the doping levels by the concentration of the oxidant can provide another approach for having an optimal power factor for thermoelectric applications. De-doping of PEDOTs by reduction agents has been generally investigated for changing its oxidation levels. In this study, we investigated the effect of the concentration of the oxidant of PEDOT-Tos on the oxidation levels, the electrical conductivities and the Seebeck coefficients. As loading the oxidant of PEDOT-Tos, the Seebeck coefficient was compromised, while the electrical conductivity increased.

Two-Dimensional Porous Polymers: From Sandwich-like Structure to Layered Skeleton

Inorganic porous materials have long dominated the field of porous materials due to their stable structure and wide applications. In the past decade, porous polymers have generated considerable interest among researchers because of their easily tunable porosity, carbon-rich backbones, and prominent physical properties. These attributes enable porous polymers to be used in various applications such as sensing, gas separation and storage, catalysis, and energy storage. However, poor dispersibility has long hindered the development of porous polymers. A majority of the reported porous polymers can only be synthesized with amorphous structure through direct precipitation from solutions during reactions. The rational design and synthesis of porous polymers with controllable morphology, such as two-dimensional (2D) morphology, remains great challenge. Two-dimensional nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest because of their unique properties, which originate from the intrinsic chemical structures and 2D dimensionality. Among 2D nanomaterials, 2D porous polymers, which possess the advanced features of polymers, porous materials, and 2D nanomaterials, have been a rising star. Conventionally, polymerization strategies for generating 2D porous polymers mainly include the cross-linking of multiarmed monomers in 2D-space-confined environments, such as crystalline solid surfaces, liquid-liquid interfaces, and liquid-air interfaces. However, these methods always involve complicate operations, e.g., under vacuum, sophisticated equipment, film transfer technology, exfoliation, and so on and, most importantly, are difficult to scale up. To overcome this synthesis obstacle, 2D nanomaterials, such as graphene, can be used as 2D templates for synthesis of sandwich-like 2D porous polymers and porous carbon nanosheets. p-Bromobenzene-, p-cyanobenzene-, polyacrylonitrile-, and amino-functionalized graphene are used as templates for direct surface polymerization through reactions such as Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reaction, condensation reaction, ionothermal reaction, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, Friedel-Crafts reaction, and oxidation reaction. Therefore, sandwich-like 2D conjugated microporous polymers, Schiff-base type porous polymers, covalent triazine frameworks, hyper-cross-linked porous polymers, and mesoporous conducting polymers can be easily prepared. Beyond graphene, other excellent 2D nanomaterials, e.g., MoS₂, can also act 2D templates to construct 2D porous polymers and corresponding hybrid materials. In addition, 2D morphology for porous polymer can be achieved without 2D templates in a few cases. For instance, olefin-linkage-linked covalent organic frameworks can be synthesized through Knoevenagel condensation reaction. As is known, porous polymers can serve as carbon-rich precursors to generate heteroatom doped porous carbons for energy storage and catalysis. Thus, one benefit of 2D porous polymers is new access toward porous carbon nanosheets through direct pyrolysis without using inorganic porous templates. In this Account, we summarize recent research on 2D porous polymers and corresponding porous carbon nanosheets.

Polymer morphology and interfacial charge transfer dominate over energy-dependent scattering in organic-inorganic thermoelectrics

Hybrid (organic-inorganic) materials have emerged as a promising class of thermoelectric materials, achieving power factors (S²σ) exceeding those of either constituent. The mechanism of this enhancement is still under debate, and pinpointing the underlying physics has proven difficult. In this work, we combine transport measurements with theoretical simulations and first principles calculations on a prototypical PEDOT:PSS-Te(Cu_x) nanowire hybrid material system to understand the effect of templating and charge redistribution on the thermoelectric performance. Further, we apply the recently developed Kang-Snyder charge transport model to show that scattering of holes in the hybrid system, defined by the energy-dependent scattering parameter, remains the same as in the host polymer matrix; performance is instead dictated by polymer morphology manifested in an energy-independent transport coefficient. We build upon this language to explain thermoelectric behavior in a variety of PEDOT and P3HT based hybrids acting as a guide for future work in multiphase materials.

To realize the potential of soft hybrid (inorganic-organic) materials for thermoelectrics, the underlying transport-related physics must be understood. Here, the authors extend the Kang-Synder framework with experimental analysis to gain insight on the thermoelectric transport in hybrid materials.

Materials and Structures toward Soft Electronics

Soft electronics are intensively studied as the integration of electronics with dynamic nonplanar surfaces has become necessary. Here, a discussion of the strategies in materials innovation and structural design to build soft electronic devices and systems is provided. For each strategy, the presentation focuses on the fundamental materials science and mechanics, and example device applications are highlighted where possible. Finally, perspectives on the key challenges and future directions of this field are presented.

Recent Progress in Flexible Organic Thermoelectrics

Environmental energy issues caused by the burning of fossil fuel such as coal, and petroleum, and the limited resources along with the increasing world population pose a world-wide challenge. Alternative energy sources including solar energy, wind energy, and biomass energy, have been suggested as practical and affordable solutions to future energy needs. Among energy conversion technologies, thermoelectric (TE) materials are considered one of the most potential candidates to play a crucial role in addressing today's global energy issues. TE materials can convert waste heat such as the sun, automotive exhaust, and industrial processes to a useful electrical voltage with no moving parts, no hazardous working chemical-fluids, low maintenance costs, and high reliability. These advantages of TE conversion provide solutions to solve the energy crisis. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress on organic TE materials, focused on polymers and their corresponding organic composites incorporated with carbon nanofillers (including graphene and carbon nanotubes). Various strategies to enhance the TE properties, such as electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient, in polymers and polymer composites will be highlighted. Then, a discussion on polymer composite based TE devices is summarized. Finally, brief conclusions and outlooks for future research efforts are presented.
