What is the role of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) on excess weight? A cross-sectional study in young Spanish people aged 2─14 years

PURPOSE

To assess the relationship between particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) levels and the prevalence of excess weight in a representative sample of Spanish young people aged 2─14 years.

METHODS

This was an ecological cross-sectional study using data from the 2017 wave of the Encuesta Nacional de Salud Española (ENSE), a nationally representative survey of the Spanish young and adult population. The final sample included 4378 young Spanish people (51.0% boys). The weight (kg) and height (cm) of the study participants were proxy-reported by parents or guardians. Excess weight was determined according to the age- and sex-criteria of the International Obesity Task Force. The PM_2.5 level was calculated as the annual monitoring data indicator for 2017 among the different regions in Spain. Logistic regression models were performed to estimate the relationships between PM_2.5 and weight.

RESULTS

Compared to young people located in regions with low levels of PM_2.5, those reporting greater odds for excess weight were found in regions with medium PM_2.5 (OR = 1.23; 95% CI, 1.02-1.49) and high PM_2.5 (OR = 1.35; 95% CI, 1.11-1.64) after adjusting for several sociodemographic, lifestyle and environmental covariates.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of excess weight in young people was positively associated with PM_2.5 levels in Spain. This finding supports the hypothesis that air pollution exposure can result in excess weight in the young population, which, in turn, might lead to the development of metabolic disorders. From a socioecological perspective, a practical need to take environmental factors into consideration is important to address unhealthy weight in Spanish young people.

Effects of brief exposure to campus environment on students' physiological and psychological health

Experiences in natural environments can enhance human wellbeing and promote the recovery of physiological and psychological health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, university students' activity off-campus was limited, thus, the campus environment was particularly important for the recovery of students' physiological and psychological health. Although the benefits of sustained natural exposure are obvious for people's physiological and psychological health, the effects of brief exposure on physiological and psychological are unclear. In the present study, four types of campus environments, including square space, dense forest space, sparse forest space, and waterfront space, were selected to explore the transient recovery effects of different types of campus environments. Sixty university students were recruited, measuring their systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate as physical parameters to assess stress recovery. Respondents also reported scores about their personal feelings in questionnaires to evaluate their psychological states. Both physiological and psychological indicators responded to the brief natural exposure (5 min), and physiological and psychological health was restored. However, only the recovery amounts of psychological indicators were significantly different in waterfront space, dense forest space, and sparse forest space. These results indicate that being compare with other spaces, the brief exposure in the waterfront space was the most beneficial to students' psychological health recovery. This recovery was attributed to the great role played by the sense of escape, but after the brief exposure, the attraction and compatibility of the environment would hinder the psychological health recovery. In conclusion, according to tests on both physiological and psychological aspects, the waterfront environment on campus is the best choice for students' transient health recovery.

Rare Variants in Genes of the Cholesterol Pathway Are Present in 60% of Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a pandemic in which conventional risk factors are inadequate to detect who is at risk early in the asymptomatic stage. Although gene variants in genes related to cholesterol, which may increase the risk of AMI, have been identified, no studies have systematically screened the genes involved in this pathway. In this study, we included 105 patients diagnosed with AMI with an elevation of the ST segment (STEMI) and treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). Using next-generation sequencing, we examined the presence of rare variants in 40 genes proposed to be involved in lipid metabolism and we found that 60% of AMI patients had a rare variant in the genes involved in the cholesterol pathway. Our data show the importance of considering the wide scope of the cholesterol pathway in order to assess the genetic risk related to AMI.

Feasibility of Remote Delivering an Exercise and Lifestyle Education Program for Individuals Living with Prediabetes and Diabetes in Brazil

This study aimed to test the feasibility of remote delivering a 12-week exercise and lifestyle education program (ExLE) or a 12-week exercise program (Ex) for individuals with prediabetes and diabetes in terms of acceptability, implementation, practicality, and limited efficacy. The programs were internet- or telephone-based delivered, depending on the participants' internet access and technology literacy. Of the 196 individuals screened, 15 were included in the study (internet-based delivery (n = 13); telephone-based delivery (n = 2)). Twelve participants completed the program they were randomized to, and most reported being satisfied with the study interventions (acceptability). Data collection procedures, weekly follow-up, study website visits, and educational materials were proper (implementation), and the adherence rate to study interventions ranged from 24% to 58% (practicality). Additionally, both programs (ExLE and Ex) seemed to promote beneficial changes in functional capacity (limited efficacy). The internet-based remote delivery of the interventions showed feasibility. Therefore, in future trials, exercise and educational interventions can be internet-based remote delivered to individuals with prediabetes and diabetes with internet access and technology literacy. In addition, some adjustments to eligibility criteria, study websites, more accessible ways of recording exercise sessions and using educational materials, and an initial supervised exercise session are recommended.

Changes in a Digital Type 2 Diabetes Self-management Intervention During National Rollout: Mixed Methods Study of Fidelity

BACKGROUND

"Healthy Living for People with type 2 Diabetes (HeLP-Diabetes)" was a theory-based digital self-management intervention for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus that encouraged behavior change using behavior change techniques (BCTs) and promoted self-management. HeLP-Diabetes was effective in reducing HbA1c levels in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). National Health Service (NHS) England commissioned a national rollout of HeLP-Diabetes in routine care (now called "Healthy Living"). Healthy Living presents a unique opportunity to examine the fidelity of the national rollout of an intervention originally tested in an RCT.

OBJECTIVE

This research aimed to describe the Healthy Living BCT and self-management content and features of intervention delivery, compare the fidelity of Healthy Living with the original HeLP-Diabetes intervention, and explain the reasons for any fidelity drift during national rollout through qualitative interviews.

METHODS

Content analysis of Healthy Living was conducted using 3 coding frameworks (objective 1): the BCT Taxonomy v1, a new coding framework for assessing self-management tasks, and the Template for Intervention Description and Replication. The extent to which BCTs and self-management tasks were included in Healthy Living was compared with published descriptions of HeLP-Diabetes (objective 2). Semistructured interviews were conducted with 9 stakeholders involved in the development of HeLP-Diabetes or Healthy Living to understand the reasons for any changes during national rollout (objective 3). Qualitative data were thematically analyzed using a modified framework approach.

RESULTS

The content analysis identified 43 BCTs in Healthy Living. Healthy Living included all but one of the self-regulatory BCTs ("commitment") in the original HeLP-Diabetes intervention. Healthy Living was found to address all areas of self-management (medical, emotional, and role) in line with the original HeLP-Diabetes intervention. However, 2 important changes were identified. First, facilitated access by a health care professional was not implemented; interviews revealed this was because general practices had fewer resources in comparison with the RCT. Second, Healthy Living included an additional structured web-based learning curriculum that was developed by the HeLP-Diabetes team but was not included in the original RCT; interviews revealed that this was because of changes in NHS policy that encouraged referral to structured education. Interviewees described how the service provider had to reformat the content of the original HeLP-Diabetes website to make it more usable and accessible to meet the multiple digital standards required for implementation in the NHS.

CONCLUSIONS

The national rollout of Healthy Living had good fidelity to the BCT and self-management content of HeLP-Diabetes. Important changes were attributable to the challenges of scaling up a digital intervention from an RCT to a nationally implemented intervention, mainly because of fewer resources available in practice and the length of time since the RCT. This study highlights the importance of considering implementation throughout all phases of intervention development.

Genetic risk modifies the effect of long-term fine particulate matter exposure on coronary artery disease

BACKGROUND

Although both environmental and genetic factors were linked to coronary artery disease (CAD), the extent to which the association of air pollution exposure with CAD can be influenced by genetic risk was not well understood.

METHODS

A total of 41,149 participants recruited from the project of Prediction for Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in China (China-PAR) were included. Genetic risk scores of CAD were constructed based on 540 genetic variants. Long-term PM_2.5 exposures were assessed by adopting satellite-based PM_2.5 estimations at 1-km resolution. We used stratified Cox proportional hazards regression model to examine the impact of PM_2.5 exposure and genetic risk on CAD risk, and further analyzed modification effect of genetic predisposition on association between PM_2.5 exposure and CAD risk.

RESULTS

During a median of 13.01 years of follow-up, 1,373 incident CAD events were observed. Long-term PM_2.5 exposure significantly increased CAD risk, and the hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] were 1.27 (1.05-1.54) and 1.95 (1.57-2.42) among intermediate and high PM_2.5 exposure groups compared to low PM_2.5 exposure group. The relative risks of CAD were 40% (HR: 1.40, 95%CI: 1.18-1.66) and 133% (HR: 2.33, 95%CI: 1.94-2.79) higher among individuals at intermediate and high genetic risk than those at low genetic risk. Compared with individuals with both low genetic risk and low PM_2.5 exposure, those with high genetic risk and high PM_2.5 exposure had highest CAD risk, with HR of 4.37 (95%CI: 3.13-6.11). We observed significant multiplicative (P < 0.001) and additive interaction [relative excess risk due to interaction (95%CI): 2.75 (1.32-4.20); attributable proportion due to interaction (95%CI): 0.56 (0.42-0.70)] between genetic risk and PM_2.5 exposure on CAD.

CONCLUSION

This study provided evidence that long-term PM_2.5 exposure might increase CAD risk, especially among people at high genetic risk. Our findings highlighted the importance of taking strategies on air quality improvement to cardiovascular disease prevention.

The impact of obesity epidemic on type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

To assess the impact of the obesity epidemic on type 2 diabetes (T2D), prediabetes and glycometabolic indices in children and adolescents.

METHODS

We searched four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Web of Science). Cross-sectional or cohort studies that reported on obesity and the prevalence of T2D or prediabetes in children and adolescents were reviewed. The study design, sample size and clinical outcomes were extracted from each study. The prevalence of T2D and prediabetes from the studies were pooled using meta-analysis methods.

RESULTS

Meta-analysis of 228184 participants showed that the prevalence of T2D was 1.3% (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.6-2.1%) in obese subjects, which was 13 times that in normal weight subjects (0.1%, 95% CI, 0.01-0.2%). The prevalence of prediabetes in obese subjects was 3 times that in normal subjects at 17.0% (13.0-22.0%) vs. 6.0% (0.01-11.0%). Moreover, BMI was positively correlated with the prevalence of T2D, prediabetes and glycometabolic indices in obese children and adolescents.

CONCLUSION

The pooled results confirm that obesity in children and adolescents leads to statistically significant increases in the prevalence of T2D and prediabetes and in glycometabolic indicator levels.

Association of decreases in PM2.5 levels due to the implementation of environmental protection policies with the incidence of obesity in adolescents: A prospective cohort study

AIMS

To explore the association between decreased levels of particulate matter (≤2.5 µm; PM_2.5) due to the implementation of environmental protection policies and the incidence of obesity in adolescents in Chongqing, China through a prospective cohort study.

METHODS

A total of 2105 children (52.02% male; aged 7.33 ± 0.60 years at baseline) were enrolled from the Chongqing Children's Health Cohort. A mixed linear regression model was used to analyse the relationships of PM_2.5 levels with obesity indicators after adjusting for covariates. Additionally, a Poisson regression model was used to determine the relationship between PM_2.5 exposure and the incidence of overweight/obesity.

RESULTS

The average PM_2.5 exposure levels from participant conception to 2014, from 2015 to 2017, and from 2018 to 2019 were 66.64 ± 5.33 μg/m³, 55.49 ± 3.78 μg/m³, and 42.50 ± 1.87 μg/m³, respectively; these levels significantly decreased over time (P < 0.001). Throughout the entire follow-up period, the incidence of overweight/obesity after a ≥ 25 μg/m³ decrease in the PM_2.5 level was 4.57% among females; this incidence was the lowest among females who experienced remarkable decreases in PM_2.5 exposure. A 1-µg/m³ decrease in the PM_2.5 level significantly decreased the body mass index (BMI), BMI z score (BMI_z), and weight of adolescents (all P < 0.001). Compared with a < 20-μg/m³ decrease in the PM_2.5 level, a ≥ 25-μg/m³ decrease protected against increased BMI (net difference= -0.93; 95% confidence interval [CI]: (-1.23,-0.63) kg/m²), BMI_z (-0.28 (-0.39, -0.17)), weight (-1.59 (-2.44, -0.74) kg), and incidence of overweight/obesity (0.48 (0.37, 0.62), P < 0.001). Moreover, compared with a < 20-μg/m³ decrease in the PM_2.5 level, a ≥ 25-μg/m³ decrease resulted in significant absolute differences in BMI (-1.26 (-1.56, -0.96) kg/m²), BMI_z (-0.53 (-0.65, -0.40)) and weight (-3.01 (-3.8, -2.19) kg) (all P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

This study showed the etiological relevance of declining PM_2.5 concentrations for the incidence of obesity in children and adolescents, suggesting that controlling ambient air pollutants may prevent the development of obesity in this age group. Continuous implementation of environmental protection policies in China has led to substantial health benefits.

Factors Associated with Undertaking Health-Promoting Activities by Older Women at High Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

BACKGROUND

The complexity of health problems concerning women aged ≥60 years makes it necessary to develop effective, low-cost strategies involving biopsychosocial interventions. The aim of this study is to identify the factors associated with undertaking health-promoting activities by older women at high risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with or without depressive symptoms.

METHODS

The study group consisted of 70 older women (62-84 years old) undertaking regular physical activity. A self-developed questionnaire (used to determine the living situation, selected lifestyle components and health problems), the Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were used.

RESULTS

In the study group undertaking regular physical activity, 40% had increased symptoms of depression (D group), and 60% were classified as non-depressed (ND group). The D group had a higher general stress level (t = -6.18, p = 0.001). Improving and/or maintaining physical fitness was identified as the greatest motivation in both groups. Willingness to spend time with other people significantly differed between the two groups (χ² = 4.148, p = 0.042). The sole factor significantly differentiating between both groups was lack of time (χ² = 8.777, p = 0.003).

CONCLUSIONS

Motivations and barriers to undertaking health-promoting activities and levels of perceived stress were significantly different between the depressed and non-depressed groups. It is important to encourage primary care physicians to perform screening tests for late-life depression and to provide information on where therapeutic interventions are available for patients with symptoms of MetS and coexisting depressive symptoms.

Interactions among maternal smoking, breastfeeding, and offspring genetic factors on the risk of adult-onset hypertension

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have reported that maternal smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding may affect the occurrence of hypertension, but whether early life factors modify the impact of the offspring's genetic risk on hypertension is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among maternal smoking and breastfeeding with adult-onset hypertension and the modified impact of offspring genetic susceptibility.

METHODS

This study included 437,185 participants from the UK Biobank who were initially free of hypertension and provided a prospective cohort of individuals aged 40 to 69 years. The association of maternal smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding with hypertension was examined by using the Cox regression model. Then, a polygenic risk score (PRS) for hypertension was used to test the gene-environmental interaction on hypertension.

RESULTS

During a median follow-up period of 8.7 years, a total of 68,148 cases of hypertension were identified in this study. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of hypertension for maternal smoking and breastfeeding were 1.11 (1.09, 1.13) and 0.96 (0.94, 0.98), respectively. However, no evidence of an interaction between maternal smoking and breastfeeding was observed. Across all levels of genetic risk, including high genetic risk, maternal smoking and nonbreastfeeding had higher hypertension hazards than nonmaternal smoking and breastfeeding, respectively. The adjusted HRs (95% CIs) of hypertension were 1.80 (1.73, 1.87) in those who had high genetic predisposition plus maternal smoking and 1.67 (1.60-1.74) in those with nonbreastfeeding and high genetic risk. There were significant additive interactions between maternal smoking or breastfeeding and genetic factors on the incidence of hypertension.

CONCLUSIONS

Maternal smoking and nonbreastfeeding were associated with a higher risk of hypertension in adulthood and may attenuate the risk of hypertension related to genetic factors. These results suggested that adherence to nonmaternal smoking and breastfeeding was associated with a lower risk of hypertension among participants with all gradients of genetic risk.

The Role of NO/sGC/cGMP/PKG Signaling Pathway in Regulation of Platelet Function

Circulating blood platelets are controlled by stimulatory and inhibitory factors, and a tightly regulated equilibrium between these two opposing processes is essential for normal platelet and vascular function. NO/cGMP/ Protein Kinase G (PKG) pathways play a highly significant role in platelet inhibition, which is supported by a large body of studies and data. This review focused on inconsistent and controversial data of NO/sGC/cGMP/PKG signaling in platelets including sources of NO that activate sGC in platelets, the role of sGC/PKG in platelet inhibition/activation, and the complexity of the regulation of platelet inhibitory mechanisms by cGMP/PKG pathways. In conclusion, we suggest that the recently developed quantitative phosphoproteomic method will be a powerful tool for the analysis of PKG-mediated effects. Analysis of phosphoproteins in PKG-activated platelets will reveal many new PKG substrates. A future detailed analysis of these substrates and their involvement in different platelet inhibitory pathways could be a basis for the development of new antiplatelet drugs that may target only specific aspects of platelet functions.

Association between fine particulate matter and coronary heart disease: A miRNA microarray analysis

Several studies have reported an association between residential surrounding particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and coronary heart disease (CHD). However, the underlying biological mechanism remains unclear. To fill this research gap, this study enrolled a residentially stable sample of 942 patients with CHD and 1723 controls. PM_2.5 concentration was obtained from satellite-based annual global PM_2.5 estimates for the period 1998-2019. MicroRNA microarray and pathway analysis of target genes was performed to elucidate the potential biological mechanism by which PM_2.5 increases CHD risk. The results showed that individuals exposed to high PM_2.5 concentrations had higher risks of CHD than those exposed to low PM_2.5 concentrations (odds ratio = 1.22, 95% confidence interval: 1.00, 1.47 per 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5). Systolic blood pressure mediated 6.6% of the association between PM_2.5 and CHD. PM_2.5 and miR-4726-5p had an interaction effect on CHD development. Bioinformatic analysis demonstrated that miR-4726-5p may affect the occurrence of CHD by regulating the function of RhoA. Therefore, individuals in areas with high PM_2.5 exposure and relative miR-4726-5p expression have a higher risk of CHD than their counterparts because of the interaction effect of PM_2.5 and miR-4726-5p on blood pressure.

Interactions between Dietary Micronutrients, Composition of the Microbiome and Efficacy of Immunotherapy in Cancer Patients

The effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer patients depends on the activity of the host's immune system. The intestinal microbiome is a proven immune system modulator, which plays an important role in the development of many cancers and may affect the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapy. The richness of certain bacteria in the gut microbiome (e.g., Bifidobacterium spp., Akkermanisa muciniphila and Enterococcus hire) improves anti-tumor specific immunity and the response to anti-PD-1 or anti-PD-L1 immunotherapy by activating antigen-presenting cells and cytotoxic T cells within the tumor. Moreover, micronutrients affect directly the activities of the immune system or regulate their function by influencing the composition of the microbiome. Therefore, micronutrients can significantly influence the effectiveness of immunotherapy and the development of immunorelated adverse events. In this review, we describe the relationship between the supply of microelements and the abundance of various bacteria in the intestinal microbiome and the effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer patients. We also point to the function of the immune system in the case of shifts in the composition of the microbiome and disturbances in the supply of microelements. This may in the future become a therapeutic target supporting the effects of immunotherapy in cancer patients.

Subclinical cardiovascular outcomes of acute exposure to fine particulate matter and its constituents: A glutathione S-transferase polymorphism-based longitudinal study

To explore the acute subclinical cardiovascular effects of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and its constituents, a longitudinal study with 61 healthy young volunteers was conducted in Xinxiang, China. Linear mixed-effect models were used to analyze the association of PM_2.5 and its constituents with cardiovascular outcomes, respectively, including blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), and platelet-monocyte aggregation (PMA). Additionally, the modifying effects of glutathione S-transferase mu 1 (GSTM1) and glutathione S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) polymorphisms were examined. A 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 was associated with -1.04 (95 % CI: -1.86 to -0.22) mmHg and -0.90 (95 % CI: -1.69 to -0.11) mmHg decreases in diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial BP (MABP) along with 1.83 % (95 % CI: 0.59-3.08 %), 5.93 % (95 % CI: 0.70-11.16 %) increases in 8-OHdG and hs-CRP, respectively. Ni content was positively associated with the 8-OHdG levels whereas several other metals presented negative association with 8-OHdG and HR. Intriguingly, GSTT1+/GSTTM1+ subjects showed higher susceptibility to PM_2.5-induced alterations of DBP and PMA, and GSTT1-/GSTM1+ subjects showed higher alteration on t-PA. Taken together, our findings indicated that short-term PM_2.5 exposure induced oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, autonomic alterations, and fibrinolysis in healthy young subjects. Among multiple examined metal components Ni appeared to positively associated with systematic oxidative stress. In addition, GST-sufficient subjects might be more prone to PM_2.5-induced autonomic alterations.

Vitamin D status is primarily associated with core symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder: A multicenter study in China

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D status and core symptoms and neurodevelopmental levels in children with ASD with a multicenter survey.

METHODS

We enrolled 1321 ASD children and 1279 typically developing (TD) children aged 2-7 years from 13 cities in China. ASD symptoms were assessed with the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and neurodevelopmental levels were evaluated with the Children Neuropsychological and Behavior Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016).

RESULTS

Children with ASD had lower serum 25(OH)D levels than TD children. Serum 25(OH)D levels were negatively associated with CARS and communication warning behavior of CNBS-R2016 scores, and were not associated with the development quotients of ASD children. ASD Children were grouped based on the quartiles for 25(OH)D levels in the controls, and children in the first to third quartiles had higher SRS social communication and/or CARS and communication warning behavior of CNBS-R2016 scores than those in the fourth quartile.

CONCLUSIONS

Serum 25(OH)D levels were primarily associated with core symptoms in children with ASD, and individuals with relatively lower 25(OH)D levels displayed worse autistic symptomatology. More research is needed to determine whether vitamin D supplements would be a useful treatment for ASD.

Serum Vitamin D, Folate and Fatty Acid Levels in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Vitamin and fatty acid deficiency in children diagnosed with autism has been linked to the etiology and course of the disease but the results have been inconsistent. In our work, we present a narrative review, which includes 20 observational studies that provide data on the blood levels of vitamin D, folate, or fatty acids of children diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder-AG group), and of a control group (children without this disorder-CG group). The main characteristics and results are presented in a summary table. Of the 20 above-mentioned studies, a meta-analysis of vitamin D and folate levels was carried out in 14 of them, with a total of 2269 children (AG = 1159, CG = 1110). Vitamin D levels were lower in AG compared to CG: SMD, 95% CI = - 0.83 [- 1.15, - 0.50]. In terms of folate levels, a total of 299 children (AG = 148, CG = 151) were analyzed, finding no significant differences with the control group: SMD, 95% CI = - 0.16 [- 0.63, 0.32]. Only one study that provided data on fatty acids in children with ASD was included in the review although it was not possible to include it in the meta-analysis. We conclude that the nutritional status (vitamin and fatty acid levels) of patients diagnosed with ASD should be taken into account, as correct adjustment of these levels-may produce an improvement in the course of the disease and could also reduce the risk of its development.

Oral microbiota signatures in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) veterans

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) represents a global public health concern, affecting about 1 in 20 individuals. The symptoms of PTSD include intrusiveness (involuntary nightmares or flashbacks), avoidance of traumatic memories, negative alterations in cognition and mood (such as negative beliefs about oneself or social detachment), increased arousal and reactivity with irritable reckless behavior, concentration problems, and sleep disturbances. PTSD is also highly comorbid with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. To advance the field from subjective, self-reported psychological measurements to objective molecular biomarkers while considering environmental influences, we examined a unique cohort of Israeli veterans who participated in the 1982 Lebanon war. Non-invasive oral 16S RNA sequencing was correlated with psychological phenotyping. Thus, a microbiota signature (i.e., decreased levels of the bacteria sp_HMT_914, 332 and 871 and Noxia) was correlated with PTSD severity, as exemplified by intrusiveness, arousal, and reactivity, as well as additional psychopathological symptoms, including anxiety, hostility, memory difficulties, and idiopathic pain. In contrast, education duration correlated with significantly increased levels of sp_HMT_871 and decreased levels of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, and presented an inverted correlation with adverse psychopathological measures. Air pollution was positively correlated with PTSD symptoms, psychopathological symptoms, and microbiota composition. Arousal and reactivity symptoms were correlated with reductions in transaldolase, an enzyme controlling a major cellular energy pathway, that potentially accelerates aging. In conclusion, the newly discovered bacterial signature, whether an outcome or a consequence of PTSD, could allow for objective soldier deployment and stratification according to decreases in sp_HMT_914, 332, 871, and Noxia levels, coupled with increases in Bacteroidetes levels. These findings also raise the possibility of microbiota pathway-related non-intrusive treatments for PTSD.

New determinants of mental health: the role of noise pollution. A narrative review

Urbanisation processes and anthropogenic actions led to a significant increase in pollution levels, with relevant consequences on global health. In particular, noise pollution demonstrated an association with cardiovascular, metabolic, and respiratory diseases. Furthermore, increasing evidence underlined the possible role of air and noise pollution in the development of psychiatric disorders. In this narrative review, evidence concerning the relationship between noise pollution and the emergence of psychiatric symptoms or psychiatric disorders is summarised. After the literature search process was completed, 40 papers were included in the present review. The exposure to road-, rail-, and air- traffic represented a risk factor for the emergence of affective disorders. This could also be mediated by the occurrence of circadian rhythms disturbances or by noise annoyance and noise sensitivity, both influencing psychological well-being and health-related quality of life. Fewer studies concentrated on special populations, particularly pregnant women and children, for whom noise pollution was confirmed as a risk factor for psychopathology. The better clarification of the complex interaction between noise pollution and mental health may help to identify subjects at risk and targeting specific prevention and intervention strategies in the urban environment.

Optimizing Engagement in an mHealth Intervention for Diabetes Support During Pregnancy: the Role of Baseline Patient Health and Behavioral Characteristics

BACKGROUND

Mobile health (mHealth) technology that addresses diabetes mellitus in pregnancy has the potential to improve maternal and child health while diminishing socioeconomic and racial disparities. Little is known about health literacy, electronic health literacy, or patient characteristics that contribute to increased mHealth use. In this pilot study, we aimed to examine patient factors associated with user engagement with a novel app for diabetes support during pregnancy.

METHOD

Low-income pregnant individuals with gestational or type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited for a 2-week usability assessment of a novel mHealth smartphone application, "SweetMama," designed to improve diabetes care. This analysis of user characteristics was a pilot assessment of data from the usability study phase. Participants completed assessments of patient health literacy, electronic health literacy, diabetes self-efficacy, and activation. User metrics (eg, sessions and total duration of use) were evaluated by participant characteristics. Descriptive analyses were conducted to assess outcomes with respect to patient's clinical history, health literacy, electronic health literacy, diabetes self-efficacy, and activation.

RESULTS

Twenty-two diverse, low-income pregnant patients with either gestational or type 2 diabetes engaged with SweetMama for 14 days. Participants with gestational diabetes had greater mean minutes of use per session and mean total duration of use than those with type 2 diabetes. Participants with greater electronic health literacy, lower patient activation, and greater self-efficacy demonstrated greater total duration of use. No user metrics differed significantly by participant general health literacy.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings of this pilot study suggest engagement with a novel mHealth app for diabetes support during pregnancy varied by baseline behavioral and clinical characteristics. Results could indicate that digital health literacy better differentiates engagement patterns than general health literacy.

The effect of fine particulate matter exposure on allergic rhinitis of adolescents aged 10-13 years: A cross-sectional study from Chongqing, China

Background

Allergic rhinitis (AR) has become a tremendous disease burden worldwide. Only a few studies have explored the effects of environmental exposure on the prevalence of AR in children in China.

Methods

In the present study, we investigated the associations of environmental exposure (including fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), air humidity, temperature, and passive smoking) with AR in adolescents aged 10-13 years in Chongqing. Data from 4,146 participants in urban and rural areas between March 2019 and May 2019 were collected.

Results

The overall prevalence of AR was 17.50% in adolescents. After adjusting for other covariates, AR was positively correlated with the annual mean PM_2.5 concentration, monthly mean PM_2.5 concentration and air temperature, and negatively related to air humidity. Furthermore, the annual mean PM_2.5 was positively associated with the risk of AR after adjusting for air temperature and humidity. Passive smoking (PS) was marginally associated with a high risk of AR.

Conclusion

High PM_2.5 exposure, high air temperature, and low air humidity were associated with a high risk of AR in adolescents. Our findings have potential implications for public health strategies and interventions aimed at reducing the burden of AR in adolescents.

Genetic Factors for Coronary Heart Disease and Their Mechanisms: A Meta-Analysis and Comprehensive Review of Common Variants from Genome-Wide Association Studies

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have discovered 163 loci related to coronary heart disease (CHD). Most GWAS have emphasized pathways related to single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that reached genome-wide significance in their reports, while identification of CHD pathways based on the combination of all published GWAS involving various ethnicities has yet to be performed. We conducted a systematic search for articles with comprehensive GWAS data in the GWAS Catalog and PubMed, followed by a meta-analysis of the top recurring SNPs from ≥2 different articles using random or fixed-effect models according to Cochran Q and I² statistics, and pathway enrichment analysis. Meta-analyses showed significance for 265 of 309 recurring SNPs. Enrichment analysis returned 107 significant pathways, including lipoprotein and lipid metabolisms (rs7412, rs6511720, rs11591147, rs1412444, rs11172113, rs11057830, rs4299376), atherogenesis (rs7500448, rs6504218, rs3918226, rs7623687), shared cardiovascular pathways (rs72689147, rs1800449, rs7568458), diabetes-related pathways (rs200787930, rs12146487, rs6129767), hepatitis C virus infection/hepatocellular carcinoma (rs73045269/rs8108632, rs56062135, rs188378669, rs4845625, rs11838776), and miR-29b-3p pathways (rs116843064, rs11617955, rs146092501, rs11838776, rs73045269/rs8108632). In this meta-analysis, the identification of various genetic factors and their associated pathways associated with CHD denotes the complexity of the disease. This provides an opportunity for the future development of novel CHD genetic risk scores relevant to personalized and precision medicine.

The Use of Mobile Health Interventions for Outcomes among Middle-Aged and Elderly Patients with Prediabetes: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

There are currently limited systematic reviews of mobile health interventions for middle-aged and elderly patients with prediabetes from trial studies. This review aimed to gather and analyze information from experimental studies investigating the efficacy of mobile health usability for outcomes among middle-aged and elderly patients with prediabetes.

METHODS

We conducted a literature search in five databases: Clinicaltrials.gov, the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), PubMed, ProQuest, and EBSCO, with a date range of January 2007 to July 2022 written in English, following a registered protocol on PROSPERO (CRD42022354351). The quality and possibility of bias were assessed using the Jadad score. The data extraction and analysis were conducted in a methodical manner.

RESULTS

A total of 25 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, with 19 studies using randomized trial designs and 6 studies with non-randomized designs. The study outcomes were the incidence of diabetes mellitus, anthropometric measures, laboratory examinations, measures of physical activity, and dietary behavior. During long-term follow-up, there was no significant difference between mobile health interventions and controls in reducing the incidence of type 2 diabetes. The findings of the studies for weight change, ≥3% and ≥5% weight loss, body mass index, and waist circumference changes were inconsistent. The efficacy of mobile health as an intervention for physical activity and dietary changes was lacking in conclusion. Most studies found that mobile health lacks sufficient evidence to change hbA1c. According to most of these studies, there was no significant difference in blood lipid level reduction.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of mobile health was not sufficiently proven to be effective for middle-aged and elderly patients with prediabetes.

Road Traffic Noise, Obesity, and the Risk of Incident Type 2 Diabetes: A Cohort Study in UK Biobank

Objectives: To assess the association of road traffic noise exposure with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) risk, and to explore the potential moderation effect of obesity. Methods: A total of 305,969 participants from the UK Biobank Cohort - an open access cohort of 500,000 participants recruited in the United Kingdom (UK) between 2006 and 2010 - were included in the study. A Cox proportional hazard model was fitted to assess the association between road traffic noise exposure and T2D. Results: A total of 19,303 participants were diagnosed with T2D during the 11.9-year median follow-up period. For every 10 dB increase in road traffic noise, there was a 4% increase in T2D risk (HR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.07). Besides, a significant positive interaction was observed between obesity and road traffic noise (P interaction <0.001) for the risk of T2D. The association of road traffic noise with T2D was stronger in overweight and obese participants (HR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.08), but not significant among lean ones (HR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.86-1.07). Conclusion: Our study observed a longitudinal association of road traffic noise exposure with T2D risk, which was stronger among overweight and obese individuals than the lean ones.

Analysis of the Spatial Association Network of PM2.5 and Its Influencing Factors in China

The spatial association network of PM_2.5 is constructed using a modified gravity model, with the data of 31 provinces in China from 2009-2020. On this basis, the spatial correlation structure of PM_2.5 and its influencing factors were investigated through social network analysis (SNA). The results showed that, first, the PM_2.5 has a typical and complex spatial correlation, and the correlation degree tends to decrease with the implementation of collaborative management. Second, they show that there is a clear "core-edge" distribution pattern in the network. Some areas with serious PM_2.5 pollution have experienced different degrees of decline in centrality due to policy pressure. Third, the network is divided into "net benefits", "net spillovers", "two-way spillovers" and "brokers". The linkage effect among the four blocks is obvious. Fourth, the government intervention and the industrial structure differentiation promote the formation of the network, but environmental regulation and car ownership differentiation have the opposite effect on the network.

Health-related quality of life among acute pancreatitis patients correlates with metabolic variables and associated factors

Introduction

Acute pancreatitis (AP) and associated metabolic abnormalities constitute prevalent medical disorders that have disastrous implications and expensive cost of care. However, the connection with metabolic abnormalities and their influence on wellbeing i.e., health-related quality of life (HRQoL) remains unclear. As a result, we investigated the influence of MetS components on HRQoL in AP patients.

Methods

In a tertiary care hospital in North India, comprehensive observational research was undertaken with enrollment of subjects having AP along metabolic syndrome (MetS) or without was included. MetS was diagnosed for subjects using the National Cholesterol Education Program–Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) guidelines. Various socio-demographic variables were also taken into consideration for the calculation of statistical significance (P ≤ 0.05) in AP patients. Student's t-test and Short Form-36 (SF-36) along with the association between AP and MetS, as well as their impact on HRQoL, was investigated finally with, Pearson Correlation Analysis Factor.

Results

The study comprised 100 subjects or patients diseased of AP associated with MetS and 100 patients with AP associated without MetS. Gender, Age, Educational Status, Tobacco uses along with the metabolic variables were found to be statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05) and comparatively increased in patients with AP with MetSthan AP without MetS except HDL levels. Finally, a negative association between all metabolic variables with the exception of HDL, and AP was found to be producing deterioration in Health compartment scores.

Conclusion

AP with MetS patients had a worse aggregate HRQOL than AP without MetS patients.

The Interactive Role of Family Functioning among BMI Status, Physical Activity, and High-Fat Food in Adolescents: Evidence from Shanghai, China

Objectives: Family functioning (FF), physical activity (PA), and high-fat food consumption (HF) are associated with adolescents being overweight and obese; however, little is known about their interactions. Therefore, this study aimed to examine how they work jointly on adolescent obesity with BMI as the outcome variable. Methods: A cross-sectional survey utilizing a cluster sampling design was conducted. Multinomial logistic regressions, multiplication interaction (MI), and marginal effects (MEs) were tested. Results: Active PA (non-overweight vs. obesity: OR = 2.260, 95% CI [1.318, 3.874]; overweight vs. obesity: OR = 2.096, 95% CI [1.167, 3.766]), healthy HF (non-overweight vs. obesity: OR = 2.048, 95% CI [1.105, 3.796]) and healthy FF (overweight vs. obesity: OR = 2.084, 95% CI [1.099, 3.952]) reduced obesity risk. Overweight students with healthy FF were less likely to become obese regardless of PA (inactive: OR = 2.181, 95% CI [1.114, 4.272]; active: OR = 3.870, 95% CI [1.719, 8.713]) or HF (unhealthy: OR = 4.615, 95% CI [1.049, 20.306]; healthy: OR = 5.116, 95% CI [1.352, 19.362]). The MEs of inactive PA and unhealthy FF were −0.071, 0.035, and 0.036 for non-overweight, overweight, and obese individuals, respectively (p < 0.05); the MEs of HF and healthy FF individuals were −0.267 and 0.198 for non-overweight and obese individuals, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Unhealthy FF regulated the influence of inactive PA or unhealthy HF on adolescent obesity, altogether leading to a higher risk of obesity.

Detrimental effects of physical inactivity on peripheral and brain vasculature in humans: Insights into mechanisms, long-term health consequences and protective strategies

The growing prevalence of physical inactivity in the population highlights the urgent need for a more comprehensive understanding of how sedentary behaviour affects health, the mechanisms involved and what strategies are effective in counteracting its negative effects. Physical inactivity is an independent risk factor for different pathologies including atherosclerosis, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. It is known to progressively lead to reduced life expectancy and quality of life, and it is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality worldwide. Recent evidence indicates that uninterrupted prolonged sitting and short-term inactivity periods impair endothelial function (measured by flow-mediated dilation) and induce arterial structural alterations, predominantly in the lower body vasculature. Similar effects may occur in the cerebral vasculature, with recent evidence showing impairments in cerebral blood flow following prolonged sitting. The precise molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying inactivity-induced vascular dysfunction in humans are yet to be fully established, although evidence to date indicates that it may involve modulation of shear stress, inflammatory and vascular biomarkers. Despite the steady increase in sedentarism in our societies, only a few intervention strategies have been investigated for their efficacy in counteracting the associated vascular impairments. The current review provides a comprehensive overview of the evidence linking acute and short-term physical inactivity to detrimental effects on peripheral, central and cerebral vascular health in humans. We further examine the underlying molecular and physiological mechanisms and attempt to link these to long-term consequences for cardiovascular health. Finally, we summarize and discuss the efficacy of lifestyle interventions in offsetting the negative consequences of physical inactivity.

Evidence of a casual relationship between vitamin D deficiency and hypertension: a family-based study

An association between vitamin D deficiency and hypertension has been observed in numerous studies. However, blood pressure improvements resulting from supplementation with vitamin D have been inconsistent. The causal relationship between vitamin D deficiency and hypertension is still unclear and was investigated in this family-based study. A total of 1370 individuals from both vitamin D deficiency and hypertension families were included. First, the heritability of vitamin D deficiency was estimated by the Falconer method. Second, SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) of vitamin D metabolic and functional pathway genes associated with vitamin D deficiency were screened by a family-based association test, and the findings were further verified in nuclear families with vitamin D deficiency. Finally, a family-based association test was applied to investigate the association between selected SNPs associated with vitamin D deficiency and hypertension. The heritability of vitamin D deficiency was 50.4% in this family-based study. Allele C of rs3847987 was a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency (OR: 1.639, 95% CI: 1.170-2.297, P = 0.004). Furthermore, a family-based association of rs3847987 with hypertension was found in both additive and recessive models (P < 0.05). In addition, vitamin D deficiency was associated with hypertension (OR: 1.317, 95% CI: 1.022-1.698, P = 0.033). In conclusion, rs3847987 in the VDR gene was associated with both vitamin D deficiency and hypertension. Therefore, vitamin D deficiency may be a causal factor for hypertension.

Association of Blood Pressure-Related Increase in Vascular Stiffness on Other Measures of Target Organ Damage in Youth

BACKGROUND

Hypertension-related increased arterial stiffness predicts development of target organ damage (TOD) and cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that blood pressure (BP)-related increased arterial stiffness is present in youth with elevated BP and is associated with TOD.

METHODS

Participants were stratified by systolic BP into low- (systolic BP <75th percentile, n=155), mid- (systolic BP ≥80th and <90th percentile, n=88), and high-risk BP categories (≥90th percentile, n=139), based on age-, sex- and height-specific pediatric BP cut points. Clinic BP, 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring, anthropometrics, and laboratory data were obtained. Arterial stiffness measures included carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity and aortic stiffness. Left ventricular mass index, left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, and urine albumin/creatinine were collected. ANOVA with Bonferroni correction was used to evaluate differences in cardiovascular risk factors, pulse wave velocity, and cardiac function across groups. General linear models were used to examine factors associated with arterial stiffness and to determine whether arterial stiffness is associated with TOD after accounting for BP.

RESULTS

Pulse wave velocity increased across groups. Aortic distensibility, distensibility coefficient, and compliance were greater in low than in the mid or high group. Significant determinants of arterial stiffness were sex, age, adiposity, BP, and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Pulse wave velocity and aortic compliance were significantly associated with TOD (systolic and diastolic cardiac function and urine albumin/creatinine ratio) after controlling for BP.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher arterial stiffness is associated with elevated BP and TOD in youth emphasizing the need for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Optimizing antiemetic therapy for children undergoing chemotherapy

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common side effect of most chemotherapy agents. Suboptimal management of CINV impacts quality of life, nutrition, gastrointestinal (GI) integrity, and adherence to chemotherapy treatment plans. This article reviews the principles of CINV management, planning and implementation of antiemetic regimens, and pharmacology of the antiemetics currently available in the United States appropriate for pediatric use. With the advent of more targeted therapies, increased use of immunotherapy, and the effects of radiotherapy to the brain, spine, and abdomen, treatment of CINV now has a broader application than just for chemotherapeutics alone.

Technology-based and digital interventions for intimate partner violence: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

A growing body of research shows the promise and efficacy of technology-based or digital interventions in improving the health and well-being of survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). In addition, mental health comorbidities such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression occur three to five times more frequently in survivors of IPV than non-survivors, making these comorbidities prominent targets of technology-based interventions. Still, research on the long-term effectiveness of these interventions in reducing IPV victimization and adverse mental health effects is emergent. The significant increase in the number of trials studying technology-based therapies on IPV-related outcomes has allowed us to quantify the effectiveness of such interventions for mental health and victimization outcomes in survivors. This meta-analysis and systematic review provide critical insight from several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the overall short and long-term impact of technology-based interventions on the health and well-being of female IPV survivors.

OBJECTIVES

To synthesize current evidence on the effects of technology-based or digital interventions on mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, and PTSD) and victimization outcomes (physical, psychological, and sexual abuse) among IPV survivors.

SEARCH METHODS

We examined multiple traditional and grey databases for studies published from 2007 to 2021. Traditional databases (such as PubMed Central, Web of Science, CINAHL Plus, and PsychINFO) and grey databases were searched between April 2019 and February 2021. In addition, we searched clinical trial registries, government repositories, and reference lists. Authors were contacted where additional data was needed. We identified 3210 studies in traditional databases and 1257 from grey literature. Over 2198 studies were determined to be duplicates and eliminated, leaving 64 studies after screening titles and abstracts. Finally, 17 RCTs were retained for meta-analysis. A pre-registered protocol was developed and published before conducting this meta-analysis.

SELECTION CRITERIA

We included RCTs targeting depression, anxiety, PTSD outcomes, and victimization outcomes (physical, sexual, and psychological violence) among IPV survivors using a technology-based intervention. Eligible RCTs featured a well-defined control group. There were no study restrictions based on participant gender, study setting, or follow-up duration. Included studies additionally supplied outcome data for calculating effect sizes for our desired outcome. Studies were available in full text and published between 2007 and 2021 in English.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

We extracted relevant data and coded eligible studies. Using Cochrane's RevMan software, summary effect sizes (Outcome by Time) were assessed using an independent fixed-effects model. Standardized mean difference (SMD) effect sizes (or Cohen's d) were evaluated using a Type I error rate and an alpha of 0.05. The overall intervention effects were analyzed using the Z-statistic with a p-value of 0.05. Cochran's Q test and Higgins' I ² statistics were utilized to evaluate and confirm the heterogeneity of each cumulative effect size. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment for randomized trials (RoB 2) was used to assess the quality of the studies. Campbell Systematic Reviews registered and published this study's protocol in January 2021. No exploratory moderator analysis was conducted; however, we report our findings with and without outlier studies in each meta-analysis.

MAIN RESULTS

Pooled results from 17 RCTs yielded 18 individual effect size comparisons among 4590 survivors (all females). Survivors included college students, married couples, substance-using women in community prisons, pregnant women, and non-English speakers, and sample sizes ranged from 15 to 672. Survivors' ages ranged from 19 to 41.5 years. Twelve RCTs were conducted in the United States and one in Canada, New Zealand, China (People's Republic of), Kenya, and Australia. The results of this meta-analysis found that technology-based interventions significantly reduced depression among female IPV survivors at 0-3 months only (SMD = -0.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.17 to -0.00), anxiety among IPV survivors at 0-3 months (SMD = -0.27, 95% CI = -0.42 to -0.13, p = 0.00, I ² = 25%), and physical violence victimization among IPV survivors at 0-6 months (SMD = -0.22, 95% CI = -0.38 to -0.05). We found significant reductions in psychological violence victimization at 0-6 months (SMD = -0.34, 95% CI = -0.47 to -0.20) and at >6 months (SMD = -0.29, 95% CI = -0.39 to -0.18); however, at both time points, there were outlier studies. At no time point did digital interventions significantly reduce PTSD (SMD = -0.04, 95% CI = -0.14 to 0.06, p = .46, I ² = 0%), or sexual violence victimization (SMD = -0.02, 95% CI = -0.14 to 0.11, I ² = 21%) among female IPV survivors for all. With outlier studies removed from our analysis, all summary effect sizes were small, and this small number of comparisons prevented moderator analyses.

AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS

The results of this meta-analysis are promising. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of IPV-mitigating digital intervention as an add-on (not a replacement) to traditional modalities using a coordinated response strategy. Our findings contribute to the current understanding of "what works" to promote survivors' mental health, safety, and well-being. Future research could advance the science by identifying active intervention ingredients, mapping out intervention principles/mechanisms of action, best modes of delivery, adequate dosage levels using the treatment intensity matching process, and guidelines to increase feasibility and acceptability.

Design, development, and evaluation of a registry system for hyperbaric oxygen therapy: A methodological study

Background and Aims

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), utilizes 100% oxygen at pressures greater than sea‐level atmospheric pressure, for the treatment of conditions in which the tissues starve for oxygen. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) has granted HBOT approval for the treatment of various conditions. On the other hand, applying informatics registry systems can improve care delivery, ameliorate outcomes, and reduce the costs and medical errors for the patients receiving HBOT treatment. Therefore, we aimed to design, develop, and evaluate a registry system for patients undergoing HBOT.

Methods

In the first phase, the conceptual and logical models were designed after conducting symposiums with experts and having other experts review the models. In the second phase, the system was developed on the web using ASP.NET  and C# programming languages frameworks. The last phase involved Nielsen's heuristic evaluation method for the system's usability. Five experts evaluated the system, including three health information management specialists and two medical informatics specialists.

Results

The hyperbaric patient information registry system (HPIRS) interacts with three types of users—a specialist physician, a nurse, and a system administrator. A scenario for each predefined activity was designed, and all the information was stored in the SQL servers. The five experts independently found 152 issues, of which 84 were duplicates. The 68 distinct issues of the system were then resolved.

Conclusions

The design and development of such registry systems can make data available and stored carefully to improve clinical care and medical research and decrease costs and errors. These registries can provide the healthcare systems with E‐health applications, improved data management, more secure data transfer, and support for statistical reporting. The implemented heuristic evaluation method can also provide a low‐cost and readily available system to fix the issues of the designed systems.

Insights into the Black Box of Intra-Amniotic Infection and Its Impact on the Premature Lung: From Clinical and Preclinical Perspectives

Intra-amniotic infection (IAI) is one major driver for preterm birth and has been demonstrated by clinical studies to exert both beneficial and injurious effects on the premature lung, possibly due to heterogeneity in the microbial type, timing, and severity of IAI. Due to the inaccessibility of the intra-amniotic cavity during pregnancies, preclinical animal models investigating pulmonary consequences of IAI are indispensable to elucidate the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). It is postulated that on one hand imbalanced inflammation, orchestrated by lung immune cells such as macrophages, may impact on airway epithelium, vascular endothelium, and interstitial mesenchyme, resulting in abnormal lung development. On the other hand, excessive suppression of inflammation may as well cause pulmonary injury and a certain degree of inflammation is beneficial. So far, effective strategies to prevent and treat BPD are scarce. Therapeutic options targeting single mediators in signaling cascades and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs)-based therapies with global regulatory capacities have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical animal models and warrant further validation in patient populations. Ante-, peri- and postnatal exposome analysis and therapeutic investigations using multiple omics will fundamentally dissect the black box of IAI and its effect on the premature lung, contributing to precisely tailored and individualized therapies.

Association between dietary quality and executive functions in school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder

Background

It is well known that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) had executive functions deficit. However, it is still unclear whether the poor dietary quality is related to the impairment of executive functions. The current study aimed to explore the association between dietary quality and executive functions in children with ASD.

Methods

A total of 106 children with ASD (7.7 ± 1.3 years) and 207 typically developing (TD) children (7.8 ± 1.3 years) were enrolled from Guangzhou, China. The Chinese version of Behavior Rating Scale of Executive function (BRIEF), the working memory subscales of the Chinese version of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV), and the Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT) were used to measure the participant's executive functions. The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect the dietary intake information, and the Chinese Diet Balance Index (DBI_16) was used to evaluate the dietary quality. Generalized linear models were used to estimate the association between dietary quality and executive functions.

Results

In children with ASD, Low Bound Score (LBS) was positively correlated with the working memory subscale score of BRIEF (β = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.02–0.44, P < 0.05), while High Bound Score (HBS) and LBS were positively correlated with the organizable subscale score of BRIEF (β = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.11–0.77, P < 0.01; β = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.01–0.37, P < 0.05). Compared to TD children, children with ASD had a higher proportion of moderate and high levels of insufficient dietary intake (moderate level, 37.7% vs. 23.2%, high level, 4.7% vs. 1.4%) and moderate level of unbalanced dietary intake (36.8% vs.21.3%), higher scores on all subscales of BRIEF (P < 0.01), and lower score on the working memory (81.3 ± 32.3 vs. 104.6 ± 12.5, P < 0.01), while there was no difference on the SCWT.

Conclusion

Poor dietary quality was associated with the impairment of working memory and organizational capacity in children with ASD. This study emphasized the importance of dietary quality in executive functions among children with ASD, and attention should be paid to improving their dietary quality.

The beneficial effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on controlling blood pressure: An umbrella meta-analysis

Several meta-analyses have revealed that n-3 PUFAs can lower blood pressure, but the findings are conflicting. In this regard, the present umbrella meta-analysis aimed was performed to clarify whether n-3 PUFAs have effects on blood pressure. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were used as international databases from inception to May 2022. To examine the effects of n-3 PUFA supplementation on blood pressure, a random-effects model was applied. The leave-one-out method was performed for the sensitivity analysis. The pooled estimate of 10 meta-analyses with 20 effect sizes revealed significant reductions in both systolic (ES = −1.19 mmHg; 95% CI: −1.76, −0.62, p < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (ES = −0.91 mmHg, 95% CI: −1.35, −0.47; p < 0.001) following n-3 PUFAs supplementation. In studies with a sample size of ≤ 400 participants and a mean age over 45, SBP and DBP were found to be substantially reduced. Overall, this umbrella meta-analysis indicates that n-3 PUFAs supplementation might play a role in improving DBP and SBP.

Involvement of retinoic acid receptor α in the autistic-like behavior of rats with vitamin A deficiency by regulating neurexin 1 in the visual cortex: a mechanism study

OBJECTIVES

To study the mechanism of retinoic acid receptor α (RARα) signal change to regulate neurexin 1 (NRXN1) in the visual cortex and participate in the autistic-like behavior in rats with vitamin A deficiency (VAD).

METHODS

The models of vitamin A normal (VAN) and VAD pregnant rats were established, and some VAD maternal and offspring rats were given vitamin A supplement (VAS) in the early postnatal period. Behavioral tests were performed on 20 offspring rats in each group at the age of 6 weeks. The three-chamber test and the open-field test were used to observe social behavior and repetitive stereotyped behavior. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to measure the serum level of retinol in the offspring rats in each group. Electrophysiological experiments were used to measure the long-term potentiation (LTP) level of the visual cortex in the offspring rats. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot were used to measure the expression levels of RARα, NRXN1, and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor 1 (NMDAR1). Chromatin co-immunoprecipitation was used to measure the enrichment of RARα transcription factor in the promoter region of the NRXN1 gene.

RESULTS

The offspring rats in the VAD group had autistic-like behaviors such as impaired social interactions and repetitive stereotypical behaviors, and VAS started immediately after birth improved most of the behavioral deficits in offspring rats. The offspring rats in the VAD group had a significantly lower serum level of retinol than those in the VAN and VAS groups (P<0.05). Compared with the offspring rats in the VAN and VAS groups, the offspring rats in the VAD group had significant reductions in the mRNA and protein expression levels of NMDAR1, RARα, and NRXN1 and the LTP level of the visual cortex (P<0.05). The offspring rats in the VAD group had a significant reduction in the enrichment of RARα transcription factor in the promoter region of the NRXN1 gene in the visual cortex compared with those in the VAN and VAS groups (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

RARα affects the synaptic plasticity of the visual cortex in VAD rats by regulating NRXN1, thereby participating in the formation of autistic-like behaviors in VAD rats.

The genetic interactions between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular diseases

The ongoing debate on whether non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an active contributor or an innocent bystander in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has sparked interests in understanding the common mediators between the two biologically distinct entities. This comprehensive review identifies and curates genetic studies of NAFLD overlapping with CVD, and describes the colinear as well as opposing correlations between genetic associations for the two diseases. Here, CVD described in relation to NAFLD are coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation. Unique findings of this review included certain NAFLD susceptibility genes that possessed cardioprotective properties. Moreover, the complex interactions of genetic and environmental risk factors shed light on the disparity in genetic influence on NAFLD and its incident CVD. This serves to unravel NAFLD-mediated pathways in order to reduce CVD events, and helps identify targeted treatment strategies, develop polygenic risk scores to improve risk prediction and personalise disease prevention.

Standardization of the assessment process within telerehabilitation in chronic diseases: a scoping meta-review

Background

Telerehabilitation (TR) interventions are receiving increasing attention. They have been evaluated in various scientific areas through systematic reviews. However, there is a lack of data on how to standardize assessment and report on their domains to guide researchers across studies and bring together the best evidence to assess TR for chronic diseases.

Aims and objectives

The aim of this study was to identify domains of assessment in TR and to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze how and when they are examined to gain an overview of assessment in chronic disease.

Methods

A scoping meta-review was carried out on 9 databases and gray literature from 2009 to 2019. The keyword search strategy was based on "telerehabilitation", “evaluation", “chronic disease" and their synonyms. All articles were subjected to qualitative analysis using the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Core Model prior to further analysis and narrative synthesis.

Results

Among the 7412 identified articles, 80 studies met the inclusion criteria and addressed at least one of the noncommunicable diseases (NCD) categories of cardiovascular disease (cardiovascular accidents), cancer, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, and obesity. Regarding the domains of assessment, the most frequently occurring were “social aspect” (n = 63, 79%) (e.g., effects on behavioral changes) and “clinical efficacy” (n = 53, 66%), and the least frequently occurring was “safety aspects” (n = 2, 3%). We also identified the phases of TR in which the assessment was conducted and found that it most commonly occurred in the pilot study and randomized trial phases and least commonly occurred in the design, pretest, and post-implementation phases.

Conclusions

Through the HTA model, this scoping meta-review highlighted 10 assessment domains which have not been studied with the same degree of interest in the recent literature. We showed that each of these assessment domains could appear at different phases of TR development and proposed a new cross-disciplinary and comprehensive method for assessing TR interventions. Future studies will benefit from approaches that leverage the best evidence regarding the assessment of TR, and it will be interesting to extend this assessment framework to other chronic diseases.

Large-scale genome-wide association study of coronary artery disease in genetically diverse populations

We report a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of coronary artery disease (CAD) incorporating nearly a quarter of a million cases, in which existing studies are integrated with data from cohorts of white, Black and Hispanic individuals from the Million Veteran Program. We document near equivalent heritability of CAD across multiple ancestral groups, identify 95 novel loci, including nine on the X chromosome, detect eight loci of genome-wide significance in Black and Hispanic individuals, and demonstrate that two common haplotypes at the 9p21 locus are responsible for risk stratification in all populations except those of African origin, in which these haplotypes are virtually absent. Moreover, in the largest GWAS for angiographically derived coronary atherosclerosis performed to date, we find 15 loci of genome-wide significance that robustly overlap with established loci for clinical CAD. Phenome-wide association analyses of novel loci and polygenic risk scores (PRSs) augment signals related to insulin resistance, extend pleiotropic associations of these loci to include smoking and family history, and precisely document the markedly reduced transferability of existing PRSs to Black individuals. Downstream integrative analyses reinforce the critical roles of vascular endothelial, fibroblast, and smooth muscle cells in CAD susceptibility, but also point to a shared biology between atherosclerosis and oncogenesis. This study highlights the value of diverse populations in further characterizing the genetic architecture of CAD.

Correlation analysis between vitamin A, D, and E status with altitude, seasonal variation, and other factors, among children aged 0-6 years in a Chinese population living in the Tibetan plateau of Ganzi prefecture

Objective

We attempted to understand the status of vitamin (Vit) A, D, and E in children aged 0–6 living in the Tibetan plateau areas of Ganzi prefecture, to provide the basis for relevant government departments to carry out physical examinations of these children and to prevent and cure four key diseases (Infantile diarrhea, nutritional anemia, rickets, and infantile pneumonia).

Methods

Serum retinol and tocopherol levels were detected using high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Serum levels of 25‐(OH)D were detected by high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS). The polynomial logistic regression was used to analyze the effects of age, season, altitude, and gender on Vit A, D, and E levels.

Results

Vit A and D had the lowest mean serum levels before the age of 1 year and with the most significant deficiency rates. The lowest Vit E levels were seen in the Toddlerhood group. The rates of deficiency and insufficiency were the highest. Vit A, D, and E levels were significantly affected by seasonal changes and were significantly higher in the summer than in any other season. Vit A and D were significantly affected by altitude, and their levels were lowest above 4 km.

Conclusion

The overall levels of Vit A, D, and E in children aged 0–6 in the Tibetan plateau areas of Ganzi prefecture were lower than those in the plain's areas.

Breastfeeding Duration and High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents: Results from a Cross-Sectional Study of Seven Provinces in China

This study was aimed to investigate the associations between breastfeeding duration and blood pressure (BP) levels, BP Z scores and high BP (HBP) in children and adolescents. A total of 57,201 participants including 29,491 boys and 27,710 girls aged 7−18 years were recruited from seven provinces in China in 2012. HBP was defined as BP levels of ≥95th percentiles of the referent age-, sex-, and height-specific population. Breastfeeding duration was divided into non-breastfeeding, 0−5 months, 6−12 months, and >12 months. Information on demographic, parental or family factors and dietary behaviors was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression and logistic regression models were applied to assess the relationships of breastfeeding duration with BP levels and BP Z scores and with HBP, respectively. Stratified analyses were performed to further investigate the potential subgroup-specific associations. The reported prolonged breastfeeding (>12 months) rate was 22.53% in the total population. After full adjustment, compared to the non-breastfeeding group, breastfeeding for 6−12 months was correlated with 0.43 (95% CI: −0.75, −0.11) and 0.36 (95% CI: −0.61, −0.12) mmHg lower levels of SBP and DBP, respectively. Similar decrease trends were found for BP Z scores. Prolonged breastfeeding (>12 months) was associated with 1.33 (95% CI: 1.12, 1.58) and 1.12 (95% CI: 0.94, 1.33) higher odds of HBP in boys and girls, respectively. Based on nationally representative data, there was no evidence that a longer duration of breastfeeding is protective against childhood HBP. Breastfeeding for 6−12 months may be beneficial to BP, while prolonged breastfeeding durations might increase the odds of HBP in children and adolescents.

Hypertension and Associated Risk Factors among Children with Intellectual Disability: A Cross-Sectional Study

To investigate the prevalence of hypertension and associated risk factors in Chinese children with intellectual disability, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 558 children with intellectual disability aged 6–18 years in Hong Kong, and 452 (81.0%) with valid data were included in the data analysis. Blood pressure was measured according to a standard protocol. Hypertension was defined using the age-, gender-, and height-specific classification criteria recommended by the 2018 Chinese Guidelines for Children. Multivariate and hierarchical logistic regression was fitted to examine the associations of hypertension with potential risk factors. Overall, 31.4% of the participants were classified as having hypertension. Obese children were more likely to develop hypertension than non-obese children (adjusted OR = 2.77, 95% CI: 1.28, 5.99, p = 0.010). A paternal education of college or above and a paternal occupation of clerks, sales representatives, and workers were also associated with an increased risk of hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension is high among Chinese children with intellectual disability. Obesity was the strongest risk factor. Further longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm our findings. Nevertheless, preventions against obesity are promising to receive doubled benefits in reducing both obesity and hypertension, given its strong relationship with hypertension in this special population.

Stromal Transcription Factor 21 Regulates Development of the Renal Stroma via Interaction with Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling

Background

Kidney formation requires coordinated interactions between multiple cell types. Input from the interstitial progenitor cells is implicated in multiple aspects of kidney development. We previously reported that transcription factor 21 (Tcf21) is required for ureteric bud branching. Here, we show that Tcf21 in Foxd1+ interstitial progenitors regulates stromal formation and differentiation via interaction with β-catenin.

Methods

We utilized the Foxd1Cre;Tcf21f/f murine kidney for morphologic analysis. We used the murine clonal mesenchymal cell lines MK3/M15 to study Tcf21 interaction with Wnt/β-catenin.

Results

Absence of Tcf21 from Foxd1+ stromal progenitors caused a decrease in stromal cell proliferation, leading to marked reduction of the medullary stromal space. Lack of Tcf21 in the Foxd1+ stromal cells also led to defective differentiation of interstitial cells to smooth-muscle cells, perivascular pericytes, and mesangial cells. Foxd1Cre;Tcf21f/f kidney showed an abnormal pattern of the renal vascular tree. The stroma of Foxd1Cre;Tcf21f/f kidney demonstrated marked reduction in β-catenin protein expression compared with wild type. Tcf21 was bound to β-catenin both upon β-catenin stabilization and at basal state as demonstrated by immunoprecipitation in vitro. In MK3/M15 metanephric mesenchymal cells, Tcf21 enhanced TCF/LEF promoter activity upon β-catenin stabilization, whereas DNA-binding deficient mutated Tcf21 did not enhance TCF/LEF promoter activity. Kidney explants of Foxd1Cre;Tcf21f/f showed low mRNA expression of stromal Wnt target genes. Treatment of the explants with CHIR, a Wnt ligand mimetic, restored Wnt target gene expression. Here, we also corroborated previous evidence that normal development of the kidney stroma is required for normal development of the Six2+ nephron progenitor cells, loop of Henle, and the collecting ducts.

Conclusions

These findings suggest that stromal Tcf21 facilitates medullary stroma development by enhancing Wnt/β-catenin signaling and promotes stromal cell proliferation and differentiation. Stromal Tcf21 is also required for the development of the adjacent nephron epithelia.

The relationship of remnant cholesterol and abdominal obesity in children: A cross-sectional study

Background

Previous studies found that remnant cholesterol (RC) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and childhood obesity is associated with cardiometabolic diseases. This study aimed to explore the relationship between RC and abdominal obesity in children.

Methods

A total of 5,959 children, aged 6−12 years old, were selected from a cross-sectional study in urban-rural areas of Chongqing, China. RC was calculated by total cholesterol (TC)—high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) cholesterol—low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) cholesterol and was divided into four groups by quartiles (Q1–Q4).

Results

Compared to children with the lowest RC (Q1), children with higher RC had significantly higher odds of abdominal obesity (Q2: OR = 1.450, 95% CI: 1.131−1.859, p < 0.05; Q3: OR = 2.127, 95% CI: 1.632−2.772, p < 0.001; Q4: OR = 2.386, 95% CI: 1.819−3.130, p < 0.001). In the stratified analyses by urban-rural areas, the odds ratios were greater in rural areas (Q2: OR = 2.228, 95% CI: 1.572−3.160, p < 0.001; Q3: OR = 3.668, 95% CI: 2.191−6.140, p < 0.001; Q4: OR = 6.490, 95% CI: 2.271−18.551, p < 0.001) than in urban areas (Q2: OR = 1.644, 95% CI: 1.192−2.266, p < 0.05; Q3: OR = 2.266, 95% CI: 1.667−3.082, p < 0.001; Q4: OR = 2.711, 95% CI: 2.005−3.665, p < 0.001).

Conclusions

Our study found that RC was positively correlated with abdominal obesity in children, and this association was higher for children living in rural areas.

Effects of omega-3 supplementation on endothelial function, vascular structure, and metabolic parameters in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus: A randomized clinical trial

Background

Vascular dysfunction is a major complication of diabetes mellitus that leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to examine the effects of omega-3 consumption on endothelial function, vascular structure, and metabolic parameters in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Methods

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 51 adolescents (10–18 years) with T1DM completed the study. Patients received 600 mg/day [containing 180 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 120 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] of omega-3 or placebo for 12 weeks. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD), carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, fasting blood sugar (FBS), hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), serum insulin (SI), urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR), blood pressure, and anthropometric indices were assessed at the baseline and after the intervention.

Results

Following supplementation, omega-3 significantly increased FMD (3.1 ± 4.2 vs. −0.6 ± 4%, p = 0.006) and decreased TG (−7.4 ± 10.7 vs. −0.1 ± 13.1 mg/dl, p = 0.022) in comparison with the placebo group. However, no significant difference was observed regarding CIMT (-0.005 ± 0.036 vs. 0.003 ± 0.021 mm, p = 0.33). Although hs-CRP was significantly decreased within the omega-3 group (p = 0.031); however, no significant change was observed compared to placebo group (p = 0.221). Omega-3 supplementation had no significant effect on other variables.

Conclusion

Given the elevation in FMD and reduction in TG, omega-3 supplementation can improve vascular function and may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in adolescents with T1DM patients.

Combining multiaspect factors to predict the risk of childhood hypertension incidence

Childhood hypertension has become a global public health issue due to its increasing prevalence and association with cerebral‐cardiovascular disease in adults. In this study, we developed a predictive model for childhood hypertension based on environmental and genetic factors to identify at‐risk individuals. Eighty children diagnosed with childhood hypertension and 84 children in the control group matched by sex and age from an established cohort were included in a nested case–control study. We constructed a multiple logistic regression model to analyze the factors associated with hypertension and applied the 10‐fold cross‐validation method to verify the prediction stability of the model. Childhood hypertension was found positively correlated with triglyceride level ≥150 mg/dL; low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol level ≥110 mg/dL; body mass index Z score; waist‐to‐height ratio Z score; and red blood cell count (all P < .01) and negatively correlated with the relative expression level of retinol acyltransferase; relative expression level of vitamin D receptor; and dietary intake of fiber, vitamin C and copper (all P < .05) in this study. BMI Z score, triglyceride ≥150 mg/dL, RBC count, VDR/β‐actin and LRAT/β‐actin ratios were used to construct the predictive model. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 94.45% (95% CI = 89.35%∼98.65%, P < .001). The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were all above 80% in both the training and validation sets. In conclusion, this model can predict the risk of childhood hypertension and could provide a theoretical basis for early prevention and intervention to improve the cardiovascular health of children.

Relationship between quality of life and adolescent glycolipid metabolism disorder: A cohort study

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of glucolipid metabolic disorders (GLMDs) in children and adolescents has a recognized association with cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adulthood. Therefore, it is important to enhance our under-standing of the risk factors for GLMD in childhood and adolescence.

AIM

To explore the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and adolescent GLMD.

METHODS

This study included 1956 samples in 2019 from a cohort study established in 2014. The QoL scale and glycolipid indexes were collected during follow-up; other covariates of perinatal factors, physical measures, and socioeconomic indicators were collected and adjusted. A generalized linear regression model and logistic regression model were used to analyse the correlation between QoL and GLMD.

RESULTS

Higher scores of QoL activity opportunity, learning ability and attitude, attitude towards doing homework, and living convenience domains correlated negatively with insulin and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (IR) levels. Psychosocial factors, QoL satisfaction factors, and total QoL scores had significant protective effects on insulin and IR levels. Activity opportunity, learning ability and attitude, attitude towards doing homework domains of QoL, psychosocial factor, and total score of QoL correlated positively with high density lipoprotein. In addition, the attitude towards doing homework domain was a protective factor for dyslipidaemia, IR > 3, and increased fasting blood glucose; four factors, QoL and total QoL score correlated significantly negatively with IR > 3. In subgroup analyses of sex, more domains of QoL correlated with insulin and triglyceride levels, dyslipidaemia, and IR > 3 in females. Poor QoL was associated with an increased prevalence of GLMD, and the effect was more pronounced in males than in females. Measures to improve the QoL of adolescents are essential to reduce rates of GLMD.

CONCLUSION

Our study revealed that QoL scores mainly correlate negatively with the prevalence of GLMD in adolescents of the healthy population. The independent relationship between QoL and GLMD can be illustrated by adjusting for multiple covariates that may be associated with glycaemic index. In addition, among females, more QoL domains are associated with glycaemic index.
