Conjugated Polymers for Flexible Energy Harvesting and Storage

Highly flexible yet strain-insensitive conjugated polymer

Imparting excellent electrical properties, mechanical robustness, suppleness, conduction stability during deformation, and self-healing to intrinsic conducting polymers is a challenging endeavor. The reversibly interlocked macromolecular networks (RILNs) approach is utilized to tackle this problem. Specifically, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is mixed with flexible polysulfonic acid networks crosslinked by reversible Diels-Alder bonds, while rigid polyaniline networks crosslinked by reversible Schiff base bonds act as molecular staples. Owing to the joint actions of the doping effect of polyaniline on PEDOT, the specific interlocking architecture and synergy between the component materials, the electrical conductivity (59.3-980.5 S cm-1), tensile strength (8.4-81.6 MPa) and elongation at break (44.5-411.0%) of the resultant PEDOT/RILNs films is significantly tunable according to different usage scenarios by adjusting the PEDOT content from 1.48 to 22.24 wt%. More importantly, the electrical resistance of PEDOT/RILNs remains constant during not only a single large extension and deflection but also repeated stretching (up to 1500 cycles) and bending (up to 106 cycles). The built-in reversible covalent bonds enable the PEDOT/RILNs to autonomously restore damaged mechanical and electrical performance. These record-breaking results and the demonstration of self-powered sensor made of PEDOT/RILNs suggest that the proposed approach successfully satisfies various conflicting requirements of flexible electronics regarding the properties of conducting polymers.

Gate-Tunable Positive and Negative Photoconductance in Near-Infrared Organic Heterostructures for In-Sensor Computing

The rapid growth of sensor data in the artificial intelligence often causes significant reductions in processing speed and power efficiency. Addressing this challenge, in-sensor computing is introduced as an advanced sensor architecture that simultaneously senses, memorizes, and processes images at the sensor level. However, this is rarely reported for organic semiconductors that possess inherent flexibility and tunable bandgap. Herein, an organic heterostructure that exhibits a robust photoresponse to near-infrared (NIR) light is introduced, making it ideal for in-sensor computing applications. This heterostructure, consisting of partially overlapping p-type and n-type organic thin films, is compatible with conventional photolithography techniques, allowing for high integration density of up to 520 devices cm-2 with a 5 µm channel length. Importantly, by modulating gate voltage, both positive and negative photoresponses to NIR light (1050 nm) are attained, which establishes a linear correlation between responsivity and gate voltage and consequently enables real-time matrix multiplication within the sensor. As a result, this organic heterostructure facilitates efficient and precise NIR in-sensor computing, including image processing and nondestructive reading and classification, achieving a recognition accuracy of 97.06%. This work serves as a foundation for the development of reconfigurable and multifunctional NIR neuromorphic vision systems.

High-Precision Tailored Polymer Molecular Weights for Specific Photovoltaic Applications through Ultrasound-Induced Simultaneous Physical and Chemical Events

It is highly challenging to reproducibly prepare semiconducting polymers with targeted molecular weight tailored for next-generation photovoltaic applications. Once such an easily accessible methodology is established, which can not only contribute to overcome the current limitation of the statistically determined nature of semiconducting polymers, but also facilitate rapid incorporation into the broad synthetic chemists' toolbox. Here, we describe a simple yet robust ultrasonication-assisted Stille polymerization for accessing semiconducting polymers with high-precision tailored molecular weights (from low to ultrahigh molecular weight ranges) while mitigating their interbatch variations. We propose that ultrasound-induced simultaneous physical and chemical events enable precise control of the semiconducting polymers' molecular weights with high reproducibility to satisfy all the optical/electrical and morphological demands of diverse types of high-performance semiconducting polymer-based devices; as demonstrated in in-depth experimental screenings in applications of both organic and perovskite photovoltaics. We believe that this methodology provides a fast development of new and existing semiconducting polymers with the highest-level performances possible on various photovoltaic devices.

Self-assembly of rod-coil-rod block copolymers in a coil-selective solvent: coarse-grained simulation results

The solution self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers provides a versatile approach to design novel nanostructured materials. Multiblock polymers, particularly those composed of liquid crystalline and coil blocks, are of significant interest due to the potential display of nematic ordering in liquid crystalline domains, offering intriguing optical and mechanical properties. In this study, dissipative particle dynamics is used to investigate the solution self-assembly of rod-coil-rod copolymers in a coil-selective solvent. Extensive molecular simulations were conducted to elucidate the impact of polymer composition, concentration and flexibility on the self-assembly behavior. A quantitative analysis was performed to investigate how polymer conformations varied with changes in composition, concentration, and rigidity. Simulation results show that, at small rod compositions, rod-coil-rod polymers self-assemble into micelles at low concentrations, transitioning to network formation as concentration increases. An increase in rod composition leads to the formation of larger aggregates, resulting in cylindrical micelles and membranes. The results reported here also offer insights into the role of flexibility in shaping the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblocks in selective solvents, thus, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the formation of diverse structures in the solution self-assembly of triblock copolymers.

Relating Structure to Properties in Non-Conjugated Pendant Electroactive Polymers

Non-conjugated pendant electroactive polymers (NCPEPs) are an emerging class of polymers that offer the potential of combining the desirable optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers with the superior synthetic methodologies and stability of traditional non-conjugated polymers. Despite an increasing number of studies focused on NCPEPs, particularly on understanding fundamental structure-property relationships, no attempts have been made to provide an overview on established relationships to date. This review showcases selected reports on NCPEP homopolymers and copolymers that demonstrate how optical, electronic, and physical properties of the polymers are affected by tuning of key structural variables such as the chemical structure of the polymer backbone, molecular weight, tacticity, spacer length, the nature of the pendant group, and in the case of copolymers the ratios between different comonomers and between individual polymer blocks. Correlation of structural features with improved π-stacking and enhanced charge carrier mobility serve as the primary figures of merit in evaluating impact on NCPEP properties. While this review is not intended to serve as a comprehensive summary of all reports on tuning of structural parameters in NCPEPs, it highlights relevant established structure-property relationships that can serve as a guideline for more targeted design of novel NCPEPs in the future.

Staggered-layer-boosted flexible Bi2Te3 films with high thermoelectric performance

Room-temperature bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) thermoelectrics are promising candidates for low-grade heat harvesting. However, the brittleness and inflexibility of Bi2Te3 are far reaching and bring about lifelong drawbacks. Here we demonstrate good pliability over 1,000 bending cycles and high power factors of 4.2 (p type) and 4.6 (n type) mW m-1 K-2 in Bi2Te3-based films that were exfoliated from corresponding single crystals. This unprecedented bendability was ascribed to the in situ observed staggered-layer structure that was spontaneously formed during the fabrication to promote stress propagation whilst maintaining good electrical conductivity. Unexpectedly, the donor-like staggered layer rarely affected the carrier transport of the films, thus maintaining its superior thermoelectric performance. Our flexible generator showed a high normalized power density of 321 W m-2 with a temperature difference of 60 K. These high performances in supple thermoelectric films not only offer useful paradigms for wearable electronics, but also provide key insights into structure-property manipulation in inorganic semiconductors.

Chain-Kinked Design: Improving Stretchability of Polymer Semiconductors through Nonlinear Conjugated Linkers

The manipulation of the polymer backbone structure has a profound influence on the crystalline behavior and charge transport characteristics of polymers. These strategies are commonly employed to optimize the performance of stretchable polymer semiconductors. However, a universal method that can be applied to conjugated polymers with different donor-acceptor combinations is still lacking. In this study, we propose a universal strategy to boost the stretchability of polymers by incorporating the nonlinear conjugated linker (NCL) into the main chain. Specifically, we incorporate meta-dibromobenzene (MB), characterized by its asymmetric linkage sites, as the NCL into the backbone of diketopyrrolopyrrole-thiophene-based (DPP-based) polymers. Our research demonstrates that the introduction of MB prompts chain-kinking, thereby disrupting the linearity and central symmetry of the DPP conjugated backbone. This modification reshapes the polymer conformation, decreasing the radius of gyration and broadening the free volume, which consequently adjusts the level of crystallinity, leading to a considerable increase in the stretchability of the polymer. Importantly, this method increases stretchability without compromising mobility and exhibits broad applicability across a wide range of donor-acceptor pair polymers. Leveraging this strategy, fully stretchable transistors were fabricated using a DPP polymer that incorporates 10 mol % of MB. These transistors display a mobility of approximately 0.5 cm2 V-1 s-1 and prove remarkably durable, maintaining 90% of this mobility even after enduring 1000 cycles at 25% strain. Overall, we propose a method to systematically control the main-chain conformation, thereby enhancing the stretchability of conjugated polymers in a widely applicable manner.

An imine-rich polymer with enlarged π-conjugated planes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Two imine-rich polymers (planar P3Q and linear TDB) were synthesized through a facile method. P3Q demonstrates an enlarged π-conjugated structure, increasing the coordination and conversion of Zn2+. As a result, for aqueous zinc-ion batteries, P3Q exhibits more excellent electrochemical performance than TDB with a discharge capacity of 226 mA h g-1 at 0.3 A g-1 and relatively high capacity retention of 70% after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g-1. The redox energy storage mechanism is also explored by ex situ characterization and density functional theory calculation.

High-Performance n-Type Organic Thermoelectrics Enabled by Synergistically Achieving High Electron Mobility and Doping Efficiency

n-Doped polymers with high electrical conductivity (σ) are still very scarce in organic thermoelectrics (OTEs), which limits the development of efficient organic thermoelectric generators. A series of fused bithiophene imide dimer-based polymers, PO8, PO12, and PO16, incorporating distinct oligo(ethylene glycol) side-chain to optimize σ is reported here. Three polymers show a monotonic electron mobility decrease as side-chain size increasing due to the gradually lowered film crystallinity and change of backbone orientation. Interestingly, polymer PO12 with a moderate side-chain size delivers a champion σ up to 92.0 S cm-1 and a power factor (PF) as high as 94.3 µW m-1 K-2 in the series when applied in OTE devices. The PF value is among the highest ones for the solution-processing n-doped polymers. In-depth morphology studies unravel that the moderate crystallinity and the formation of 3D conduction channel derived from bimodal orientation synergistically contribute to high doping efficiency and large charge carrier mobility, thus resulting in high performance for the PO12-based OTEs. The results demonstrate the great power of simple tuning of side chain in developing n-type polymers with substantial σ for improving organic thermoelectric performance.

Micro/Nano-Fabrication of Flexible Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)-Based Conductive Films for High-Performance Microdevices

With the increasing demands for novel flexible organic electronic devices, conductive polymers are now becoming the rising star for reaching such targets, which has witnessed significant breakthroughs in the fields of thermoelectric devices, solar cells, sensors, and hydrogels during the past decade due to their outstanding conductivity, solution-processing ability, as well as tailorability. However, the commercialization of those devices still lags markedly behind the corresponding research advances, arising from the not high enough performance and limited manufacturing techniques. The conductivity and micro/nano-structure of conductive polymer films are two critical factors for achieving high-performance microdevices. In this review, the state-of-the-art technologies for developing organic devices by using conductive polymers are comprehensively summarized, which will begin with a description of the commonly used synthesis methods and mechanisms for conductive polymers. Next, the current techniques for the fabrication of conductive polymer films will be proffered and discussed. Subsequently, approaches for tailoring the nanostructures and microstructures of conductive polymer films are summarized and discussed. Then, the applications of micro/nano-fabricated conductive films-based devices in various fields are given and the role of the micro/nano-structures on the device performances is highlighted. Finally, the perspectives on future directions in this exciting field are presented.

Construction of Nitrogen-abundant Graphyne Scaffolds via Mechanochemistry-Promoted Cross-Linking of Aromatic Nitriles with Carbide Toward Enhanced Energy Storage

The 2D graphyne-related scaffolds linked by carbon-carbon triple bonds have demonstrated promising applications in the field of catalysis and energy storage due to their unique features including high conductivity, permanent porosity, and electron-rich properties. However, the construction of related scaffolds is still mainly limited to the cross-linking of CaC₂ with multiple substituted aromatic halogens and there is still a lack of efficient methodology capable of introducing high-concentration heteroatoms within the architectures. The development of alternative and facile synthesis procedures to afford nitrogen-abundant graphyne materials is highly desirable yet challenging in the field of energy storage, particularly via the facile mechanochemical procedure under neat and ambient conditions. Herein, graphyne materials with abundant nitrogen-containing species (nitrogen content of 6.9-29.3 wt.%), tunable surface areas (43-865 m²  g^-1 ), and hierarchical porosity are produced via the mechanochemistry-driven pathway by deploying highly electron-deficient multiple substituted aromatic nitriles as the precursors, which can undergo cross-linking reaction with CaC₂ to afford the desired nitrogen-doped graphyne scaffolds efficiently. Unique structural features of the as-synthesized materials contributed to promising performance in supercapacitor-related applications, delivering high capacitance of 254.5 F g^-1 at 5 mV s^-1 , attractive rate performance, and good long-term stability.

Synthesis of Block Copolymers Containing Stereoregular Pendant Electroactive Blocks

The stereoregular nonconjugated pendant electroactive polymer (NCPEP) poly((N-carbazolylethylthio) propyl methacrylate) (PCzETPMA) has recently shown charge carrier mobilities that are on par with conjugated polymers. Here, we increased the complexity of the architecture for this NCPEP by introducing a polystyrene (PS) block via an anionic, living polymerization yielding a family of PS-b-PCzETPMA block copolymers as the first examples of NCPEP-block-copolymers with controlled stereoregularity of the NCPEP-blocks. Through this methodology we were able to control the molar masses, PS to PCzETPMA block ratios, and tacticities of the PCzETPMA-blocks. We found all three parameters to significantly impact the hole mobilities (μ_h) of the resulting copolymers, which increased with higher molar masses, longer PCzETPMA-blocks, and higher isotacticity of the PCzETPMA-block, giving the best μ_h of 2.33 × 10^-5 cm²/V·s after annealing at 150 °C for the highest molar mass copolymer with a dominant isotactic PCzETPMA-block. This work is the first reported synthesis of a block copolymer bearing a NCPEP-block with a controlled tacticity and demonstrates that such complex polymer architectures can be realized with NCPEPs while maintaining control over their stereoregularity and without significantly suppressing the hole mobility in the resulting copolymers.

Effects of Side-Chain Length and Functionality on Polar Poly(dioxythiophene)s for Saline-Based Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Understanding the impact of side chains on the aqueous redox properties of conjugated polymers is crucial to unlocking their potential in bioelectrochemical devices, such as organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Here, we report a series of polar propylenedioxythiophene-based copolymers functionalized with glyme side chains of varying lengths as well as an analogue with short hydroxyl side chains. We show that long polar side chains are not required for achieving high volumetric capacitance (C*), as short hydroxy substituents can afford facile doping and high C* in saline-based electrolytes. Furthermore, we demonstrate that varying the length of the polar glyme chains leads to subtle changes in material properties. Increasing the length of glyme side chain is generally associated with an enhancement in OECT performance, doping kinetics, and stability, with the polymer bearing the longest side chains exhibiting the highest performance ([μC*]_OECT = 200 ± 8 F cm^-1 V^-1 s^-1). The origin of this performance enhancement is investigated in different device configurations using in situ techniques (e.g., time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry and chronoamperometry). These studies suggest that the performance improvement is not due to significant changes in C* but rather due to variations in the inferred mobility. Through a thorough comparison of two different architectures, we demonstrate that device geometry can obfuscate the benchmarking of OECT active channel materials, likely due to contact resistance effects. By complementing all electrochemical and spectroscopic experiments with in situ measurements performed within a planar OECT device configuration, this work seeks to unambiguously assign material design principles to fine-tune the properties of poly(dioxythiophene)s relevant for application in OECTs.

Water Harvesting Strategies through Solar Steam Generator Systems

Solar steam generator (SSG) systems have attracted increasing attention, owing to its simple manufacturing, material abundance, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly freshwater production. This system relies on photothermic materials and water absorbing substrates for a clean continuous distillation process. To optimize this process, there are factors that are needed to be considered such as selection of solar absorber and water absorbent materials, followed by micro/macro-structural system design for efficient water evaporation, floating, and filtration capability. In this contribution, we highlight the general interfacial SSG concept, review and compare recent progresses of different SSG systems, as well as discuss important factors on performance optimization. Furthermore, unaddressed challenges such as SSG's cost to performance ratio, filtration of untreatable micropollutants/microorganisms, and the need of standardization testing will be discussed to further advance future SSG studies.

Polypyrrole/SnCl2 modified bacterial cellulose electrodes with high areal capacitance for flexible supercapacitors

Polypyrrole (PPy)/bacterial cellulose (BC) composite membranes are a promising kind of lightweight and flexible electrodes for supercapacitors. Herein, we explored a facile and efficient electrostatic self-assembly approach to uniformly depositing anion-doped PPy onto positively charged SnCl₂-modifed BC (SBC). The obtained PPy@SBC electrode exhibited a high areal capacitance of 5718 mF cm^-2 at a current density of 0.5 mA cm^-2, a desirable capacitance retention of 83.1% at 5.0 mA cm^-2 and excellent cycling stability (a capacitance retention of 86.8% after 10,000 cycles at 10 mA cm^-2). A symmetric flexible supercapacitor was further assembled with the PPy@SBC electrodes, which delivered outstanding mechanical flexibility with negligible capacitance decay under different bent states. This study shows impressive potential in fabricating high-performance electrodes for flexible supercapacitors.

Conjugated Polyelectrolytes: Underexplored Materials for Pseudocapacitive Energy Storage

Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) are characterized by an electronically delocalized backbone bearing ionic functionalities. These features lead to properties relevant for use in energy-storing pseudocapacitor devices, including ionic conductivity, water processability, gel-formation, and formation of polaronic species stabilized by electrostatic interactions. In this Perspective, the basis for evaluating the figures of merit for pseudocapacitors is provided, together with the techniques used for their evaluation. The general utility and challenges encountered with neutral conjugated polymers are then discussed. Finally, recent advances on the use of CPEs in pseudocapacitor devices are reviewed. The article is concluded by discussing how their miscibility in aqueous media permits the incorporation of CPEs in living materials that are capable of switching function from extraction of energy from bacterial metabolic pathways to pseudocapacitor energy storage.

Tuning Conjugated Polymer Chain Packing for Stretchable Semiconductors

In order to apply polymer semiconductors to stretchable electronics, they need to be easily deformed under strain without being damaged. A small number of conjugated polymers, typically with semicrystalline packing structures, have been reported to exhibit mechanical stretchability. Herein, a method is reported to modify polymer semiconductor packing-structure using a molecular additive, dioctyl phthalate (DOP), which is found to act as a molecular spacer, to be inserted between the amorphous chain networks and disrupt the crystalline packing. As a result, large-crystal growth is suppressed while short-range aggregations of conjugated polymers are promoted, which leads to an improved mechanical stretchability without affecting charge-carrier transport. Due to the reduced conjugated polymer intermolecular interactions, strain-induced chain alignment and crystallization are observed. By adding DOP to a well-known conjugated polymer, poly[2,5-bis(4-decyltetradecyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-(2H,5H)-dione-(E)-1,2-di(2,2'-bithiophen-5-yl)ethene] (DPPTVT), stretchable transistors are obtained with anisotropic charge-carrier mobilities under strain, and stable current output under strain up to 100%.

Environment tolerant, adaptable and stretchable organohydrogels: preparation, optimization, and applications

Multiple stretchable materials have been successively developed and applied to wearable devices, soft robotics, and tissue engineering. Organohydrogels are currently being widely studied and formed by dispersing immiscible hydrophilic/hydrophobic polymer networks or only hydrophilic polymer networks in an organic/water solvent system. In particular, they can not only inherit and carry forward the merits of hydrogels, but also have some unique advantageous features, such as anti-freezing and water retention abilities, solvent resistance, adjustable surface wettability, and shape memory effect, which are conducive to the wide environmental adaptability and intelligent applications. This review first summarizes the structure, preparation strategy, and unique advantages of the reported organohydrogels. Furthermore, organohydrogels can be optimized for electro-mechanical properties or endowed with various functionalities by adding or modifying various functional components owing to their modifiability. Correspondingly, different optimization strategies, mechanisms, and advanced developments are described in detail, mainly involving the mechanical properties, conductivity, adhesion, self-healing properties, and antibacterial properties of organohydrogels. Moreover, the applications of organohydrogels in flexible sensors, energy storage devices, nanogenerators, and biomedicine have been summarized, confirming their unlimited potential in future development. Finally, the existing challenges and future prospects of organohydrogels are provided.

Effects of Mechanical Deformation on the Opto-Electronic Responses, Reactivity, and Performance of Conjugated Polymers: A DFT Study

The development of polymers for optoelectronic applications is an important research area; however, a deeper understanding of the effects induced by mechanical deformations on their intrinsic properties is needed to expand their applicability and improve their durability. Despite the number of recent studies on the mechanochemistry of organic materials, the basic knowledge and applicability of such concepts in these materials are far from those for their inorganic counterparts. To bring light to this, here we employ molecular modeling techniques to evaluate the effects of mechanical deformations on the structural, optoelectronic, and reactivity properties of traditional semiconducting polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), polythiophene (PT), poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), and polypyrrole (PPy). For this purpose, density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations were conducted for the distinct systems at varied stretching levels in order to identify the influence of structural deformations on the electronic structure of the systems. In general, it is noticed that the elongation process leads to an increase in electronic gaps, hypsochromic effects in the optical absorption spectrum, and small changes in local reactivities. Such changes can influence the performance of polymer-based devices, allowing us to establish significant structure deformation response relationships.

Controlled Synthesis of Mesoporous π-Conjugated Polymer Nanoarchitectures as Anode for Lithium-ions Battery

Conjugated polymers possess better electron conductivity due to large π-electron conjugated configuration endowing them significant scientific and technological interest. However, the obvious deficiency of active-site underutilization impairs their electrochemical performance. Therefore, designing and engineering π-conjugated polymers with rich redox functional groups and mesoporous architectures could offer new opportunities for them in these emerging applications and further expand their application scopes. Herein, a series of 1, 3, 5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB)-based π-conjugated mesoporous polymers (π-CMPs) are constructed by one-pot emulsion-induced interface assembly strategy. Furthermore, co-induced in-situ polymerization on 2D interfaces by emulsion and micelle is explored, which delivered sandwiched 2D mesoporous π-CMPs coated graphene oxides (GO@mPTAPB). Benefiting from specific redox-active functional groups, excellent electron conductivity and 2D mesoporous conjugated framework, GO@mPTAPB exhibits high capability of accommodating Li⁺ anions (up to 382 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1 ) and outstanding electrochemical stability (87.6% capacity retention after 1000 cycles). The ex-situ Raman and impedance spectrum are further applied to reveal the high reversibility of GO@mPTAPB. Material Nanoarchitectonics of Functional Polymers and Inorganic Nanomaterials for Smart Supercapacitors

Smart supercapacitors are a promising energy storage solution due to their high power density, long cycle life, and low-maintenance requirements. Functional polymers (FPs) and inorganic nanomaterials are used in smart supercapacitors because of the favorable mechanical properties (flexibility and stretchability) of FPs and the energy storage properties of inorganic materials. The complementary properties of these materials facilitate commercial applications of smart supercapacitors in flexible smart wearables, displays, and self-generation, as well as energy storage. Here, an overview of strategies for the development of suitable materials for smart supercapacitors is presented, based on recent literature reports. A range of synthetic techniques are discussed and it is concluded that a combination of organic and inorganic hybrid materials is the best option for realizing smart supercapacitors. This perspective facilitates new strategies for the synthesis of hybrid materials, and the development of material technologies for smart energy storage applications.

Conception and Theoretical Study of a New Copolymer Based on MEH-PPV and P3HT: Enhancement of the Optoelectronic Properties for Organic Photovoltaic Cells

A new copolymer has been studied, which is formed by Poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene) (MEH-PPV) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The choice of these π-conjugated polymers was based on their semiconductor characters and their great applicability in electronic organic devices. The structure and vibrational and optoelectronic properties were simulated by calculations based on DFT, TD-DFT, and ZINDO. This material shows original and unique properties compared to the basic homopolymers. Thus, the obtained results reveal that this copolymer can be mixed with the (6,6)-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) to give existence to a new composite that can be used as an active layer for an organic solar cell.

Enhancement of triboelectricity based on fully organic composite films with a conducting polymer

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) based on ferroelectric organic materials have advantages of high flexibility, biocompatibility, controllable ferroelectric properties, etc. However, this has limited the electrical output performance due to their lower ferroelectric characteristics than those of inorganic ferroelectric materials. A lot of effort has been made to improve the organic ferroelectric characteristics through composites, surface modifications, structures, etc. Herein, we report TENGs made of ferroelectric composite materials consisting of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The composite was prepared by simply blending PVDF-TrFE and PEDOT:PSS with a weight ratio from 0% to 60%. When the ratio was 20%, the ferroelectric-crystalline phase was enhanced and the highest dielectric constant was observed. Accordingly, the TENGs consisting of 20% composite film and polyimide exhibited the best output performance: the maximum open circuit voltage and short circuit current were ∼15 V and ∼2.3 μA at 1 Hz oscillation, respectively. These results indicate that the ferroelectric characteristics of PVDF-TrFE can be enhanced by adding PEDOT:PSS as a nanofiller.

Flute-type porous carbon derived from soybean shells for high-performance all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitors

Flute-type porous carbon was successfully prepared from soybean shells through convenient methods. The influence of mass ratio on the structure and electrochemical performance of porous carbon obtained from soybean shells was investigated in detail. The obtained porous carbon exhibited a micro-tube morphology structure with a specific surface area of 2802 m² g⁻¹, pore volume of 1.36 cm³ g⁻¹, and appropriate pore size distribution. The porous carbon showed good electrochemical properties as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The optimal porous carbon SSAC4 exhibited high specific capacitance of 465 F g⁻¹ (1 A g⁻¹) and 287 F g⁻¹ (20 A g⁻¹) in a three-electrode system with 6 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the as-assembled SSAC4-based all-solid-state supercapacitors delivered a high specific capacitance of 294 F g⁻¹ at 0.1 A g⁻¹ and excellent cycling stability of 86.2% after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g⁻¹.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Poly(phenyleneethynylene)s for Fluorescence and Raman Dual-Modal Imaging and Drug-Resistant Bacteria Killing

Poly(phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) is a widely used functional conjugated polymer with applications ranging from organic optoelectronics and fluorescence sensors to optical imaging and theranostics. However, the fluorescence efficiency of PPE in aggregate states is generally not as good as their solution states, which greatly compromises their performance in fluorescence-related applications. Herein, a series of PPE derivatives with typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties is designed and synthesized. In these PPEs, the diethylamino-substituted tetraphenylethene units function as the long-wavelength AIE source and the alkyl side chains serve as the functionalization site. The obtained AIE-active PPEs with large π-conjugation show strong aggregate-state fluorescence, interesting self-assembly behaviors, inherently enhanced alkyne vibrations in the Raman-silent region of cells, and efficient antibacterial activities. The PPE nanoparticles with good cellular uptake capability can clearly and sensitively visualize the tumor region and residual tumors via their fluorescence and Raman signals, respectively, to benefit the precise tumor resection surgery. After post-functionalization, the obtained PPE-based polyelectrolyte can preferentially image bacteria over mammalian cells and possesses efficient photodynamic killing capability against Gram-positive and drug-resistant bacteria. This work provides a feasible design strategy for developing functional conjugated polymers with multimodal imaging capability as well as photodynamic antimicrobial ability.

2D Molecular Sheets of Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks for Ultrastable Sodium-Ion Storage

There has been growing research interest in hydrogen bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) by virtue of their great structural crystallinity, large surface areas and porosity. Their potential in electrochemical applications, unfortunately, remains elusive because weak hydrogen bonds would dissociate in solution that eventually compromises the structural integrity. Herein, it is demonstrated that this issue may be overcome by designing and introducing multisite hydrogen bonding within HOFs. 2D molecular sheets are prepared using diaminotriazole as the linkers for the first time. In spite of the molecular thickness (≈1 nm), they are chemically stable and mechanically robust, and have diminished solubility in most polar or nonpolar organic solvents. This solution-stable HOF exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance for Na⁺ ion storage. In particular, it enables an exceptional cycle life of >10 000 cycles at 1 A g^-1 , which is far superior to most other organic electrode materials. Theoretical simulations indicate that the activation barrier for the intralayer or interlayer diffusion of Na⁺ ions within the organic frameworks is small.

Poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene)-Grafted Monolithic 3D Hierarchical Carbon as Highly Capacitive and Stable Supercapacitor Electrodes

A holistic approach to fabricate a hierarchical electrode that consists of redox-active poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene), 1,5 PDAN, uniformly and conformally grafted onto a 3D carbon nanotube (CNT-a-CC) electrode is set forth. The CNT-a-CC electrode was formed by direct growth of high-density CNTs on the surface of every individual microfiber, the constituent of activated carbon cloth (a-CC). Owing to the naphthalene backbone, conformal deposition of 1,5 PDAN on carbon surfaces has been readily attained via electropolymerization. This hierarchical platform with open and continuous nanochannels formed by CNTs coupled with excellent electrical connectivity between CNTs and the polymer provides a reproducible platform for electrochemical investigation. According to multiple sample analyses on CNT-a-CC, the gravimetric capacitance of 1,5 PDAN is up to 1250 F/g, and this value can be maintained up to 100 mV/s. Hierarchical organization provides a specific capacitance of 650 F/g at 2 mV/s at a 1,5 PDAN loading of 2.5 mg/cm². The conjugated ladder structure of the polymer led to strong π-π interactions between the polymer and CNT-a-CC together with mechanically robust CNT-a-CC. A capacitance retention of 94% for 1,5 PDAN has been obtained after 25,000 cycles at 100 mV/s, a significant cycle stability improvement over conventional conductive polymers such as polyaniline. This new lightweight electrode that seamlessly integrates functional species with nanochannel-like CNT-a-CC opens up a new opportunity to harness electrochemical reactions in the 3D carbon electrode for energy storage and electrocatalysis as well as electrochemical sensing.

Recent Advances on Conducting Polymers Based Nanogenerators for Energy Harvesting

With the rapid growth of numerous portable electronics, it is critical to develop high-performance, lightweight, and environmentally sustainable energy generation and power supply systems. The flexible nanogenerators, including piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), are currently viable candidates for combination with personal devices and wireless sensors to achieve sustained energy for long-term working circumstances due to their great mechanical qualities, superior environmental adaptability, and outstanding energy-harvesting performance. Conductive materials for electrode as the critical component in nanogenerators, have been intensively investigated to optimize their performance and avoid high-cost and time-consuming manufacture processing. Recently, because of their low cost, large-scale production, simple synthesis procedures, and controlled electrical conductivity, conducting polymers (CPs) have been utilized in a wide range of scientific domains. CPs have also become increasingly significant in nanogenerators. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on CP-based PENG and TENG for biomechanical energy harvesting. A thorough overview of recent advancements and development of CP-based nanogenerators with various configurations are presented and prospects of scientific and technological challenges from performance to potential applications are discussed.

Fibre electronics: towards scaled-up manufacturing of integrated e-textile systems

The quest for a close human interaction with electronic devices for healthcare, safety, energy and security has driven giant leaps in portable and wearable technologies in recent years. Electronic textiles (e-textiles) are emerging as key enablers of wearable devices. Unlike conventional heavy, rigid, and hard-to-wear gadgets, e-textiles can lead to lightweight, flexible, soft, and breathable devices, which can be worn like everyday clothes. A new generation of fibre-based electronics is emerging which can be made into wearable e-textiles. A suite of start-of-the-art functional materials have been used to develop novel fibre-based devices (FBDs), which have shown excellent potential in creating wearable e-textiles. Recent research in this area has led to the development of fibre-based electronic, optoelectronic, energy harvesting, energy storage, and sensing devices, which have also been integrated into multifunctional e-textile systems. Here we review the key technological advancements in FBDs and provide an updated critical evaluation of the status of the research in this field. Focusing on various aspects of materials development, device fabrication, fibre processing, textile integration, and scaled-up manufacturing we discuss current limitations and present an outlook on how to address the future development of this field. The critical analysis of key challenges and existing opportunities in fibre electronics aims to define a roadmap for future applications in this area.

A Distannylated Monomer of a Strong Electron-Accepting Organoboron Building Block: Enabling Acceptor-Acceptor-Type Conjugated Polymers for n-Type Thermoelectric Applications

Acceptor-acceptor (A-A) copolymerization is an effective strategy to develop high-performance n-type conjugated polymers. However, the development of A-A type conjugated polymers is challenging due to the synthetic difficulty. Herein, a distannylated monomer of strong electron-deficient double B←N bridged bipyridine (BNBP) unit is readily synthesized and used to develop A-A type conjugated polymers by Stille polycondensation. The resulting polymers show ultralow LUMO energy levels of -4.4 eV, which is among the lowest value reported for organoboron polymers. After n-doping, the resulting polymers exhibit electric conductivity of 7.8 S cm^-1 and power factor of 24.8 μW m^-1  K^-2 . This performance is among the best for n-type polymer thermoelectric materials. These results demonstrate the great potential of A-A type organoboron polymers for high-performance n-type thermoelectrics.

Chromatic Conductive Polymer Nanocomposites of Poly (p-Phenylene Ethynylene)s and Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We report on dispersions and thin films of chromatic conductive nanocomposites of poly(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) generated via solution mixing. The linear, conjugated PPEs with dialkyl- and dialkyloxy-side chain groups are shown to debundle and disperse high concentration (up to 2.5 mg/mL) SWNTs in various organic solvents. The solubilization of SWNTs and PPE wrapping is accompanied with the change in the solution color. Ultraviolet visible absorption spectra of nanocomposite solutions demonstrate a new absorption peak at a higher wavelength, supporting the observed chromatism. Fluorescence spectra of nanocomposite solutions display significant quenching of the fluorescence intensity and the Stern–Volmer model is used to analyze fluorescence quenching. Electron microscopy of the chromatic solid films of high mass fraction PPE/SWNT nanocomposites obtained by vacuum filtration reveals the debundled SWNTs in the PPE matrix. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of these PPE/SWNT nanocomposite films are as high as 150 MPa and 15 GPa, respectively. The composite films exhibit remarkably high conductivities, ranging from ~1000 S/m to ~10,000 S/m for 10 wt% and 60 wt% SWNT nanocomposites, respectively.

Benzene Ring Knitting Achieved by Ambient-Temperature Dehalogenation via Mechanochemical Ullmann-Type Reductive Coupling

The current approaches capable of affording conjugated porous networks (CPNs) still rely on solution-based coupling reactions promoted by noble metal complexes or Lewis acids, on-surface polymerization conducted in ultrahigh-vacuum environment at very high temperatures (>200 °C), or mechanochemical Scholl-type reactions limited to electron-rich substrates. To develop simple and scalable approaches capable of making CPNs under neat and ambient conditions, herein, a novel and complementary method to the current oxidative Scholl coupling processes is demonstrated to afford CPNs via direct aromatic ring knitting promoted by mechanochemical Ullmann-type reactions. The key to this strategy lies in the dehalogenation of aromatic halides in the presence of Mg involving the formation of Grignard reagent intermediates. Products (Ph-CPN-1) obtained via direct CC bond formation between 1,2,4,5-tetrabromobenzene (TBB) monomer feature high surface areas together with mesoporous architecture. The versatility of this approach is confirmed by the successful construction of various CPNs via knitting of the corresponding aromatic rings (e.g., pyrene and triphenylene), and even highly crystalline graphite product was obtained. The CPNs exhibit good electrochemical performance as the anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This approach expands the frontiers of CPN synthesis and provides new opportunities to their scalable applications.

Red-Emitting, Acene-Doped Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles that Respond Ratiometrically to Photogenerated 1O2

Fluorophores that respond to external stimuli on demand have numerous applications in imaging and chemical or biological sensing. In this paper, we describe conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) that comprise a donor polymer matrix and a red-fluorescent, singlet oxygen-reactive heteroacene dopant (DE-TMT) that display a ratiometric response upon photo-oxidation. This ratiometric response can be tuned by the level of doping of DE-TMT, the identity of the conjugated polymer matrix used, and the blending of two conjugated polymers together to access red-shifted emission wavelengths. We followed a rational design process that combined (i) fundamental understanding of the influence of the chemical structure on luminescence spectra and efficiencies, energy transfer efficiencies, and reactivity and (ii) systematically determining how blending multiple chromophores in nanoparticles influences energy transfer efficiencies and the speed of optical responses to irradiation. Our approach of refining the compositions of these nanoparticles has yielded materials that combine many desirable characteristics for analytical applications-utility in aqueous environments, high quantum yield, emission of red light, and ratiometric luminescent responses. We anticipate that the type of approach described herein can be of use to others in designing CPNs for luminescence applications.

Aggregation-Induced Emission: From Small Molecules to Polymers-Historical Background, Mechanisms and Photophysics

The enhancement of photoluminescence through formation of molecular aggregates in organic oligomers and conjugated organic polymers is reviewed. A historical contextualization of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena is presented. This includes the loose bolt or free rotor effect and J-aggregation phenomena, and discusses their characteristic features, including structures and mechanisms. The basis of both effects is examined in key molecules, with a particular emphasis on the AIE effect occurring in conjugated organic polymers with a polythiophene (PT) skeleton with triphenylethylene (TPE) units. Rigidification of the excited state structure is one of the defining conditions required to obtain AIE, and thus, by changing from a flexible ground state to rigid (quinoidal-like) structures, oligo and PTs are among the most promising emerging molecules alongside with the more extensively used TPE derivatives. Molecular structures moving away from the domination of aggregation-caused quenching to AIE are presented. Future perspectives for the rational design of AIEgen structures are discussed.

A reinforced concrete structure rGO/CNTs/Fe2O3/PEDOT:PSS paper electrode with excellent wettability and flexibility for supercapacitors

A paper electrode with a reinforced concrete structure using reduced rGO nanosheets, PEDOT:PSS, CNTs and Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles was formed by a facile and simple vacuum drying method. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor exhibits excellent electrochemical performance.

Highly Stable Indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene-Based Donor-Acceptor Copolymers for Hybrid Electrochromic and Energy Storage Applications

Stable doping of indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene (IDTT) structures enables easy color tuning and significant improvement in the charge storage capacity of electrochromic polymers, making use of their full potential as electrochromic supercapacitors and in other emerging hybrid applications. Here, the IDTT structure is copolymerized with four different donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) units, with subtle changes in their electron-donating and electron-withdrawing characters, so as to obtain four different donor-acceptor copolymers. The polymers attain important form factor requirements for electrochromic supercapacitors: desired switching between achromatic black and transparent states (L*a*b* 45.9, -3.1, -4.2/86.7, -2.2, and -2.7 for PIDTT-TBT), high optical contrast (72% for PIDTT-TBzT), and excellent electrochemical redox stability (Ired/Iox ca. 1.0 for PIDTT-EBE). Poly[indacenodithieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,8-diyl-alt-4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-(2-hexyldecyl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole-7,7'-diyl] (PIDTT-EBzE) stands out as delivering simultaneously a high contrast (69%) and doping level (>100%) and specific capacitance (260 F g-1). This work introduces IDTT-based polymers as bifunctional electro-optical materials for potential use in color-tailored, color-indicating, and self-regulating smart energy systems.

Textile sensors platform for the selective and simultaneous detection of chloride ion and pH in sweat

The development of wearable sensors, in particular fully-textile ones, is one of the most interesting open challenges in bioelectronics. Several and significant steps forward have been taken in the last decade in order to achieve a compact, lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to wear platform for healthcare and sport activities real-time monitoring. We have developed a fully textile, multi-thread biosensing platform that can detect different bioanalytes simultaneously without interference, and, as an example, we propose it for testing chloride ions (Cl^-) concentration and pH level. The textile sensors are simple threads, based on natural and synthetic fibers, coated with the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and properly functionalized with either a nano-composite material or a chemical sensitive dye to obtain Cl^- and pH selective sensing functionality, respectively. The single-thread sensors show excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, selectivity, long term stability and the ability to work with small volumes of solution. The performance of the developed textile devices is demonstrated both in buffer solution and in artificial human perspiration to perform on-demand and point-of-care epidermal fluids analysis. The possibility to easily knit or sew the thread sensors into fabrics opens up a new vision for a textile wearable multi-sensing platform achievable in the near future.

Polycarbazole and Its Derivatives: Synthesis and Applications. A Review of the Last 10 Years

Polycarbazole and its derivatives have been extensively used for the last three decades, although the interest in these materials briefly decreased. However, the increasing demand for conductive polymers for several applications such as light emitting diodes (OLEDs), capacitators or memory devices, among others, has renewed the interest in carbazole-based materials. In this review, the synthetic routes used for the development of carbazole-based polymers have been summarized, reviewing the main synthetic methodologies, namely chemical and electrochemical polymerization. In addition, the applications reported in the last decade for carbazole derivatives are analysed. The emergence of flexible and wearable electronic devices as a part of the internet of the things could be an important driving force to renew the interest on carbazole-based materials, being conductive polymers capable to respond adequately to requirement of these devices.

Highly Conductive Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks for Resilient Lithium Storage with Superb Rate Capability

Redox-active organic cathode materials have drawn growing attention because of the broad availability of raw materials, eco-friendliness, scalable production, and diverse structural flexibility. However, organic materials commonly suffer from fragile stability in organic solvents, poor electrochemical stability in charge/discharge processes, and insufficient electrical conductivity. To address these issues, using Cu(II) salt and benzenehexathiolate (BHT) as the precursors, we synthesized a robust and redox-active 2D metal-organic framework (MOF), [Cu₃(C₆S₆)]_n, namely, Cu-BHT. The Cu-BHT MOFs have a highly conjugated structure, affording a high electronic conductivity of 231 S cm^-1, which could further be increased upon lithiation in lithium-ion battery (LIB) applications. A reversible four-electron reaction reveals the Li storage mechanism of the Cu-BHT for a theoretical capacity of 236 mAh g^-1. The as-prepared Cu-BHT cathode delivers an excellent reversible capacity of 175 mAh g^-1 with ultralow capacity deterioration (0.048% per cycle) upon 500 cycles at a high current density of 300 mA g^-1. Therefore, we believe this work would provide a practical strategy for the development of high-power energy storage materials.

A novel lactose biosensor based on electrochemically synthesized 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/thiophene (EDOT/Th) copolymer

In this study, a new lactose biosensor has been developed in which the 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/thiophene (EDOT/Th) copolymer is used as a transducer. The EDOT/Th copolymer was deposited on the glassy carbon electrode to be used as the working electrode. In addition to the working electrode, the three-electrode system was used in both the electrochemical synthesis and in the biosensor measurements. Lactase (β-galactosidase) that catalyzes the breakdown of lactose into monosaccharides (glucose and galactose) and galactose oxidase that catalyzes the oxidation of the resulting galactose were attached to the copolymer by a cross-linker on the modified working electrode. The response of the enzyme electrode to lactose was determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at +0.12 V. Enzyme electrode optimization parameters (pH, temperature, enzyme concentration, etc.) were performed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and CV methods were used to support copolymer formation. In addition, the characteristics of the enzyme electrode prepared in this study (Km, 0.02 mM; activation energy Ea, 38 kJ/mol; linear working range, up to 1.72 mM; limit of detection, 1.9 × 10−5 M and effects of interferents [uric acid and ascorbic acid]) were determined.
