Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is a multifactorial disease that genetic and environmental factors contribute to its development. The aim of the study was to investigate the association of OX40L promoter gene polymorphisms with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Iranians. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred and sixty-eight subjects including 184 healthy subjects and 184 T2DM patients were enrolled in our study. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was applied to detect genotype and allele frequencies of rs3850641, rs1234313 and rs10912580. In addition, SNPStats web tool was applied to estimate haplotype frequency and linkage disequilibrium (LD). RESULTS The distribution of tested polymorphisms was statistically different between the T2DM patients and healthy subjects (P < 0.01). rs1234313 AG (OR = 0.375, 95% CI = 0.193-0.727, P = 0.004) and rs10912580 AG (OR = 0.351, 95% CI = 0.162-0.758, P = 0.008) genotypes were associated with the decreased risk of T2DM in Iranians. Moreover, our prediction revealed that AAG (OR = 0.46, 95% CI= (0.28-0.76), P = 0.0028) and GAG (OR = 0.24, 95% CI= (0.13-0.45), P < 0.0001) haplotypes were related to the reduced risk of the disease. However, the tested polymorphisms had no effect on biochemical parameters and body mass index (BMI) in the patient group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings revealed that OX40L promoter gene polymorphisms are associated with T2DM. Moreover, genotype and allelic variations were related to the decreased risk of T2DM in Iranians. Further studies are recommended to show whether these polymorphic variations could affect OX40/OX40L interaction or OX40L phenotype.

Abstract
AIMS The purpose of this study was to assess the levels of cardiovascular health (CVH) of Black and Latino adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and examine the association of individual and microsystem level factors with their CVH score. METHODS This was a cross-sectional design in 60 Black and Latino Adults aged 18-40 with T2D. Data were collected on sociodemographic, individual (sociodemographic, diabetes self-management, sleep disturbance, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and the inflammatory biomarkers IL-6 and hs-CRP) and microsystem factors (family functioning), and American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 metrics of CVH. Factors significantly associated with the CVH score in the bivariate analyses were entered into a linear regression model. RESULTS The sample had a mean age 34 ± 5 years and was primarily female (75%) with a mean CVH score was 8.6 ± 2.2 (possible range of 0-14). The sample achieved these CVH factors at ideal levels: body mass index <25 kg/m2 (8%); blood pressure <120/80 (42%); hemoglobin A1c < 7% (57%); total cholesterol <200 mg/dL (83%); healthy diet (18%); never or former smoker > one year (95%); and physical activity (150 moderate-to-vigorous minutes/week; 45%). In the multivariable model, two factors were significantly associated with cardiovascular health: hs-CRP (B = -0.11621, p < .0001) and the general health scale (B = 0.45127, p = .0013). CONCLUSIONS This sample had an intermediate level of CVH, with inflammation and general health associated with overall CVH score.

Abstract
Studies suggest links between diabetes and gastrointestinal (GI) traits; however, their underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we comprehensively assess the genetic relationship between type 2 diabetes (T2D) and GI disorders. Our study demonstrates a significant positive global genetic correlation of T2D with peptic ulcer disease (PUD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastritis-duodenitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and diverticular disease, but not inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We identify several positive local genetic correlations (negative for T2D - IBD) contributing to T2D's relationship with GI disorders. Univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomisation analyses suggest causal effects of T2D on PUD and gastritis-duodenitis and bidirectionally with GERD. Gene-based analyses reveal a gene-level genetic overlap between T2D and GI disorders and identify several shared genes reaching genome-wide significance. Pathway-based study implicates leptin (T2D - IBD), thyroid, interferon, and notch signalling (T2D - IBS), abnormal circulating calcium (T2D - PUD), cardiovascular, viral, proinflammatory and (auto)immune-mediated mechanisms in T2D and GI disorders. These findings support a risk-increasing genetic overlap between T2D and GI disorders (except IBD), implicate shared biological pathways with putative causality for certain T2D - GI pairs, and identify targets for further investigation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the association between the serum copper concentration and the prevalence of diabetes among US adults with hypertension using the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The study population was selected from adults aged over 20 years old in the three survey cycles of NHANES from 2011 to 2016. Logistic regression model analyses were applied to determine the independent risky effect of copper to the prevalence of diabetes. Also, a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was performed to explore the potential nonlinear association between serum copper concentration and the prevalence of diabetes. A total of 1786 subjects (742 cases and 1044 controls) were included, and 924 were men (51.7%), and 742 (41.5%) were diabetic. Compared with non-diabetic individuals, the concentration of serum copper in diabetic patients with hypertension was higher. After adjusting for age, sex, race, education, marital status, body mass index (BMI), family poverty income ratio (PIR), smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and hyperlipidemia, the highest quartile of serum copper concentration significantly increased the risk of diabetes as compared with the lowest quartile (OR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.01-1.92, ptrend = 0.036). The results of RCS analysis showed significant non-linear relationship between serum copper concentration and prevalence of diabetes (p-non-linear = 0.010). This study finds that serum copper concentration are significantly associated with risk of diabetes in hypertensive patients, which suggests copper as an important risk factor of diabetes development.

Abstract
To investigate the frequency of monocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells (M-MDSCs) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and explore the potential associations between M-MDSCs, glycemic control, and the occurrence of infections and tumor. 102 healthy and 77 T2DM individuals were enrolled. We assessed the M-MDSCs frequency, levels of fasting plasma glucose (FPG), haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and other relevant indicators. Each patient underwent a follow-up of at least 6 months after M-MDSCs detection. The M-MDSCs frequency was significantly higher in patients with poor glycemic control (PGC) compared to the healthy population (P < 0.001), whereas there was no significant difference between patients with good glycemic control and the healthy (P > 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the M-MDSCs frequency and FPG, HbA1c (R = 0.517 and 0.315, P < 0.001, respectively). T2DM patients with abnormally increased M-MDSCs have a higher incidence of infection and tumor (48.57% and 11.43% respectively). Our results shed new light on the pathogenesis of T2DM, help to understand why T2DM patients are susceptible to infection and tumor and providing novel insights for future prevention and treatment of T2DM.

Abstract
Background Studies have shown that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) tend to have poorer outcomes associated with COVID-19, including increased rates of hospitalization, ICU admission, need for ventilatory support, and mortality. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study that included all non-pregnant adult patients who were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 in a Southwest Virginia health system between March 18, 2020, and August 31, 2022. T2DM status was treated as a binary variable. T2DM severity was assessed using the Diabetes Complications Severity Index (DCSI). Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between T2DM status and COVID-19 severity outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression was also used to assess the relationship between DCSI score and COVID-19 severity outcomes among patients with an established diagnosis of T2DM at the time of COVID-19 hospital admission. Results Patients with T2DM had 1.27 times the odds of experiencing a poor COVID-19 clinical outcome (95% CI: 1.13, 1.43) and 1.35 times the odds of in-hospital mortality (95% CI: 1.14, 1.59) compared to patients without diabetes. Among patients with T2DM, increasing DCSI score was significantly associated with increased odds of experiencing a poor COVID-19 clinical outcome and in-hospital mortality. Conclusions Diabetic patients in our sample were at increased odds of experiencing poor COVID-19 clinical outcomes and in-hospital mortality compared to individuals without diabetes. Amongst patients with T2DM, increasing DCSI score was associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes. Clinical decision support tools may be able to utilize DCSI scores as an indicator of COVID-19 severity risk to facilitate decisions regarding treatment aggressiveness and resource allocation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several researches have demonstrated that patients with sarcoidosis accompanied with the abnormality in blood glucose and/or lipids, however, the causal relationship between them remains uncertain. To elucidate the potential association and causality of blood glucose and lipids with sarcoidosis, we conducted a propensity score matching (PSM)-based observational study combined with mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS All subjects in this study were retrospectively collected from Tongji Hospital during 2010 and 2023. 1:1 PSM was employed to control the potential confounders as appropriate. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the associations of sarcoidosis with fasting glucose, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), total cholesterol (TC), and total triglyceride (TG). The further subtype analysis was also conducted. Afterwards, a bidirectional MR analysis based on public data deeply explored the causality among the 5 candidate traits and sarcoidosis, for which the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was utilized as the main inferring approach. RESULTS In the observational study, a total number of 756 subjects were enrolled, with 162 sarcoidosis patients and 594 non-sarcoidosis participants, while 160 pairs of subjects were matched after PSM. Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that HDLC (OR: 0.151; 95% CI: 0.056-0.408; P < 0.001) and TC (OR: 3.942; 95% CI: 2.644-5.877; P < 0.001) were strongly associated with sarcoidosis. Subtype analysis showed that low HDLC was independently correlated to risk of lesions in bronchus and lungs, and mediastinal lymph nodes, while high TC was to cervical lymph nodes. In MR analysis, high fasting glucose, low HDLC, and high TC were identified as the causal factors of sarcoidosis. CONCLUSION HDLC and TC had the potential to influence the risk of sarcoidosis, which could be regarded as predictors and may provide new diagnostic and therapeutic targets for sarcoidosis.

This study aimed to use metabolomic methods to explore how Holothuria leucospilota polysaccharides (HLP) improved metabolism disorders in the liver of Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats with spontaneous type 2 diabetes. The results showed that HLP effectively improved the metabolic disorder. Based on KEGG functional analysis, five key biomarkers associated with bile acid metabolism were detected and screened (P < 0.05). The results of serum total bile acid levels and liver damage in diabetic rats further showed the regulatory effects of HLP on bile acid metabolism. The results of bile acid-related gene expression in the liver showed that HLP inhibited liver farnesoid X Receptor - small heterodimer partner (FXR-SHP) signalling and increased the expression of bile acid synthesis genes (P < 0.05). Our results explored the underlying mechanisms by which HLP accelerated cholesterol consumption to anti-hypercholesterolemia and anti-diabetic by inhibiting liver FXR-SHP signaling. HLP's effect on bile acid regulation provides insights into treating T2DM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is little bulk clinical evidence on nutritional status and mortality in patients with diabetes. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in adults with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This study included 5916 adult patients with diabetes from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018. Cox proportional risk models were used to estimate risk ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 8.17 years, there were 1248 deaths from all causes and 370 deaths from CVD. After multivariate adjustment, the risk of all-cause mortality was reduced by 24%, 38%, and 28% in Q2 (49.0-52.99), Q3 (53.0-57.99), and Q4 (≥58.0), respectively, compared with Q1 (PNI<49.0). The risk of cardiovascular mortality was reduced by 30%, 27%, and 26%, respectively. Consistent results were observed in the subgroup analysis. CONCLUSIONS Lower serum PNI levels were significantly associated with higher all-cause and CVD mortality. These findings suggest that maintaining an appropriate range of serum PNI status may reduce the risk of death in patients with diabetes.

Abstract
Patients affected with type 1 diabetes and a non-negligible number of patients with type 2 diabetes are insulin dependent. Both the injection technique and the choice of the most suitable needle are fundamental for allowing them to have a good injection experience. The needles may differ in several parameters, from the length and diameter, up to the forces required to perform the injection and to some geometrical parameters of the needle tip (e.g., number of facets or bevels). The aim of the research is to investigate whether an increased number of bevels could decrease forces and energy involved in the insertion-extraction cycle, thus potentially allowing patients to experience lower pain. Two needle variants, namely, 31 G × 5 mm and 32 G × 4 mm, are considered, and experimental tests are carried out to compare 3-bevels with 5-bevels needles for both the variants. The analysis of the forces and energy for both variants show that the needles with 5 bevels require a statistically significant lower drag or sliding force (p-value = 0.040 for the 31 G × 5 mm needle and p-value < 0.001 for 32 G × 4 mm), extraction force (p-value < 0.001 for both variants), and energy (p-value < 0.001 for both variants) during the insertion-extraction cycle. As a result, 3-bevels needles do not have the same functionality of 5-bevels needles, show lower capacity of drag and extraction, and can potentially be related to more painful injection experience for patients.

Abstract
Background Blood glucose levels significantly affect the clinical prognosis of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), and systemic immune inflammation is a common risk factor for both CAD and diabetes. However, the relationship between immune inflammation levels and poor prognosis in patients with CAD with different glucose metabolic statuses remains unclear. Methods Between January 2007 and December 2020, we recruited 84,645 patients with CAD. The systemic immune inflammation index (SII) was used to comprehensively reflect the immune and inflammatory levels of patients and was calculated using the following formula: neutrophils × platelets/lymphocytes. The patients were classified into nine groups according to their glucose metabolism status (diabetes mellitus [DM], pre-diabetes mellitus [pre-DM], and normal glucose regulation [NGR]). Cox regression models and competing risk Fine and Gray models were used to investigate the association between SII and clinical outcomes. Results During the follow-up period, 12,578 patients died, including 5857 cardiovascular-related and 1251 cancer-related deaths. The risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality increased with increasing SII tertiles in CAD patients with NGR, pre-DM, and DM. When considering glucose metabolism status, the multivariate cox regression revealed that CAD patients with DM and SII-H levels had the highest risk of all-cause mortality (1.69 [1.56-1.83]), cardiovascular mortality (2.29 [2.02-2.59]), and cancer mortality (1.29 [1.01-1.66]). Moreover, incorporating the SII into traditional risk factor models significantly improved the C-index for predicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Conclusion Systemic immune inflammation levels on admission were correlated with a higher risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in patients with CAD, particularly in those with DM.

Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is a highly prevalent condition in which Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is the most common. Diabetic Kidney Disease is one of the most relevant complications and affects approximately one-third of patients with Diabetes Mellitus. It is characterized by increased urinary protein excretion and a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, assessed by serum creatinine levels. Recent studies have shown that vitamin D levels are low in these patients. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the effects of vitamin D supplementation on proteinuria and creatinine, which are important markers for assessing the severity of kidney disease in patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease. PUBMED, EMBASE, and COCHRANE databases were consulted, Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed, and the COCHRANE toll for bias assessment was applied. Six papers were quantitative studies and fulfilled the inclusion criteria for this review. The results showed that vitamin D supplementation of 50,000 I.U./week for 8 weeks effectively reduced proteinuria and creatinine in patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease, particularly in patients with Diabetes Mellitus type 2. Vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease by having essential effects on disease-related inflammatory markers, such as the reduction of proteinuria and creatinine. However, more clinical trials must be conducted to evaluate the intervention among more significant numbers of patients.

Abstract
Background Long-term impact of sepsis on whole body systems is not well investigated. The aim of the study was to explore the potential association of neonatal/adult sepsis with several inflammation-related diseases in multiple physiological systems. Methods Instrumental variables for neonatal and adult sepsis were collected from the public genome-wide association studies, which must satisfy the correlation, exclusivity and independence assumptions. Mendelian randomization methods (including random-effect inverse-variance weighted, MR-PRESSO, weighted median and MR-Egger) were used to determine the genetic association of neonatal/adult sepsis with asthma, allergy, rheumatoid arthritis, body mass index/obesity, type 1/type 2 diabetes and intelligence/dementia. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy. The study was performed by TwoSampleMR in R software. Results The inverse-variance weighted method reported that neonatal sepsis was related to the decreased level of body mass index (OR = 0.988, 95%CI = 0.980 ~ 0.997, P = 0.007), and adult sepsis was related to the decreased risk of obesity (OR = 0.785, 95%CI = 0.655 ~ 0.940, P = 0.009). These results were supported by the other Mendelian randomization methods. In addition, the study did not find any association of neonatal/adult sepsis with the other inflammation-related diseases. No heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy were found using sensitivity analyses. Conclusion Sepsis had the potential to reduce the risk of obesity or body mass index level at a genetic level, both in neonates and in adults.

Our previous study found that the dichloromethane extract (DCME) of C. longissima showed anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. However, the anti-inflammatory mechanism and detailed chemical composition of DCME remain unclear, which lead to the original interest of this study. AIM OF THE STUDY The study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of the DCME from C. longissima and further explore the accurate chemical components responsible for this active extract. MATERIALS AND METHODS The anti-inflammatory activity of DCME in vivo was tested with carrageenan-induced mice paw edema model. Its anti-inflammatory mechanism was explored with LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages model. The compounds in DCME were isolated by repeated column chromatography and their structures were identified on the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The anti-inflammatory activities of the isolates in vitro were also tested by suppressing releases of inflammatory mediators (NO, IL-6 and TNF-α) in RAW264.7 macrophages model. In addition, the molecular docking analysis, which evaluated the potential interaction between the compounds and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), was performed. RESULTS DCME effectively alleviated the mice paw edema induced by carrageenan. In LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, DCME significantly decreased the production of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) via inhibiting their mRNA transcription, down-regulated the expression of TLR4 and myeloid differentiation factor 88, inhibited the phosphorylation of alpha inhibitor of NF-κB (IκBα), NF-κB p65, and degradation of IκBα. Twelve diterpenoid phenols were identified from DCME, and they not only showed different inhibitory effects on the production of NO, IL-6 and TNF-α in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, but also could bind to TLR4 and NF-κB as analyzed by molecular docking. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, DCME from C. longissima could inhibit inflammatory response both in vitro and in vivo, which is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of abundant diterpenoid phenols through inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, and might be a promising agent for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common chronic heterogeneous metabolic disorder. However, the roles of pyroptosis and infiltrating immune cells in islet dysfunction of patients with T2D have yet to be explored. In this study, we aimed to explore potential crucial genes and pathways associated with pyroptosis and immune infiltration in T2D. METHODS To achieve this, we performed a conjoint analysis of three bulk RNA-seq datasets of islets to identify T2D-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs). After grouping the islet samples according to their ESTIMATE immune scores, we identified immune- and T2D-related DEGs. A clinical prediction model based on pyroptosis-related genes for T2D was constructed. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis was performed to identify genes positively correlated with pyroptosis-related pathways. A protein-protein interaction network was established to identify pyroptosis-related hub genes. We constructed miRNA and transcriptional networks based on the pyroptosis-related hub genes and performed functional analyses. Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) was conducted using the GSE153885 dataset. Dimensionality was reduced using principal component analysis and t-distributed statistical neighbor embedding, and cells were clustered using Seurat. Different cell types were subjected to differential gene expression analysis and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Cell-cell communication and pseudotime trajectory analyses were conducted using the samples from patients with T2D. RESULTS We identified 17 pyroptosis-related hub genes. We determined the abundance of 13 immune cell types in the merged matrix and found that these cell types were correlated with the 17 pyroptosis-related hub genes. Analysis of the scRNA-seq dataset of 1892 islet samples from patients with T2D and controls revealed 11 clusters. INS and IAPP were determined to be pyroptosis-related and candidate hub genes among the 11 clusters. GSEA of the 11 clusters demonstrated that the myc, G2M checkpoint, and E2F pathways were significantly upregulated in clusters with several differentially enriched pathways. DISCUSSION This study elucidates the gene signatures associated with pyroptosis and immune infiltration in T2D and provides a critical resource for understanding of islet dysfunction and T2D pathogenesis.

Abstract
Hermetia illucens-3 (HI-3), an active insect antimicrobial peptide extracted from H. illucens larvae, exerts antibacterial and anticancer activity. However, the inflammatory effects and their relative molecular mechanisms remain unclear. To explore the inflammatory effects of HI-3, an inflammatory model was induced using 1 ng/mL LPS in RAW264.7 cells. The cell viability and phagocytosis of LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells were then detected after HI-3 treatment. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity, the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and the expression levels of both p65 and inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B (IκB) were measured. Results showed that HI-3 could inhibit the differentiation, proliferation, phagocytosis, and antioxidant ability, as well as the secretion and messenger RNA expression levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β of LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. At the same time, the level of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was increased after HI-3 treatment. Western blotting results showed that HI-3 suppressed LPS-induced p65 and IκB activation in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, HI-3 exerts its anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and the activation of p65 and IκB, which indicated that HI-3 could be a promising therapeutic medicine for inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate low-grade inflammation in type 2 diabetes and explore associations to clinical aspects as well as microvascular and macrovascular complications. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis. SETTING The outpatient diabetes clinic at the Department of Endocrinology at Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark. PARTICIPANTS 100 participants with type 2 diabetes confirmed by a haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)≥6.5% for a minimum of 1 year and 21 healthy controls. OUTCOME MEASURES Serum levels of 27 inflammation-related biomarkers measured by immunoassay. Associations with microvascular and macrovascular complications, body weight, glycaemic control, medication and sex were investigated in the diabetes cohort. RESULTS Serum levels of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and eotaxin were elevated in type 2 diabetes (p<0.05), while interleukin (IL)-7 was decreased (p<0.001). IL-12/IL-23p40, IL-15, macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC) and C reactive protein (CRP) levels were increased with body weight (p<0.05), while eotaxin and TNF-α were increased with elevated HbA1c levels (p<0.04). Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor therapy was associated with lower levels of induced protein-10, MDC and thymus and activation regulated chemokine (p<0.02), while females had higher levels of MDC (p=0.027). Individuals with ≥3 diabetic complications had elevated levels of IL-6, IL-10, IL-12/IL-23p40, IL-15 and CRP compared with those with ≤3 (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The level of low-grade inflammation in type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity, glycaemic regulation, therapeutical management, sex and complications. Our results underline the importance of addressing inflammatory issues in type 2 diabetes, as these may predispose for crippling comorbidities.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION While patients with diabetes are at higher risk of developing acute kidney injury (AKI), there are few studies on the recurrence of AKI in older adult patients. This study therefore aimed to examine the impact of diabetes on AKI recurrence and long-term outcomes in older male patients. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included older male patients who experienced AKI during hospitalization from July 2007 to August 2011. Medical records of all patients were followed up for 10 years. Patients with AKI were classified into groups with and without diabetes. We analyzed differences in common geriatric comorbidities, AKI recurrence frequency, and severity between the two groups, identified risk factors affecting recurrence frequency, and assessed outcomes. RESULTS Of all 266 patients, 128 had diabetes and 138 did not. The AKI recurrence rate was significantly higher in the group with diabetes (80.5 vs. 66.7%; P = 0.011). There was a significantly higher proportion of AKI caused by infections in patients with diabetes (43.3 vs. 33.2%, P = 0.006). The proportion of patients with an AKI recurrence frequency ≥ 3 was significantly higher in the group with diabetes (44.7 vs. 29.4%, P = 0.027). Diabetes and coronary heart disease were independent risk factors for AKI recurrence (P < 0.05), diabetes control was associated with multiple AKI recurrences (P = 0.016), and no significant difference was found between the groups regarding the 10-year prognosis (P = 0.522). However, a subgroup analysis showed that patients with multiple AKI recurrences within 2 years had the worst survival outcome (P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS Older male patients with diabetes are prone to AKI recurrence after initial onset of AKI. Diabetes is an independent risk factor for AKI recurrence, and active diabetes control (HbA1c < 7%) may thus reduce the recurrence of AKI and improve the very poor outcomes of patients with multiple recurrences of AKI within 2 years.

Abstract
High glucose plays a critical role in diabetes. However, the point when high glucose induces diabetes and the organ that triggers the initiation of diabetes remain to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to clarify the damage induced on different organs of rats, when administered a 2-week infusion of dietary glucose. SD rats (12 weeks old) were randomly divided into normal diet, high glucose infusion (IHG) and oral high glucose (OHG) groups. The levels of fasting blood sugar, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 were assessed. Intestine, kidney and liver samples were collected for pathological examination. Feces were collected from the rats for gut microbiota assessment. The results indicated that short-term high glucose induced hyperglycemia that lasted for at least 2 weeks after cessation of high glucose intake. Short-term high glucose also clearly increased the serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, led to jejunum mucosa injury and obvious steatosis in hepatocytes, and disturbed the balance of the gut microbiota. OHG led to swelling and necrosis of individual intestinal villi. IHG led to the necrosis and disappearance of cells in the upper layer of the intestinal mucosa. The lesions were confined to the mucosa. A degree of glomerular cell swelling and apoptosis were also observed. Short-term high glucose intake induced lesions in the liver, kidney and intestine, disturbed the balance of the gut microbiota and may consequently induce diabetes complications.

Abstract
Obesity and its complications have become serious global health concerns recently and increasing work has been carried out to explicate the underlying mechanism of the disease development. The recognized correlations suggest oxidative stress and inflammation in expanding adipose tissue with excessive fat accumulation play important roles in the pathogenesis of obesity, as well as its associated metabolic syndromes. In adipose tissue, obesity-mediated insulin resistance strongly correlates with increased oxidative stress and inflammation. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has been described as a key modulator of antioxidant signaling, which regulates the transcription of various genes coding antioxidant enzymes and cytoprotective proteins. Furthermore, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated that Nrf2 is a pivotal target of obesity and its related metabolic disorders. However, its effects are controversial and even contradictory. This review aims to clarify the complicated interplay among Nrf2, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, insulin signaling and chronic inflammation in obesity. Elucidating the implications of Nrf2 modulation on obesity would provide novel insights for potential therapeutic approaches in obesity and its comorbidities.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is no longer only a disease of humans, but also of domestic animals, and it particularly affects cats. It is increasingly thought that because of its unique characteristics, T2DM may belong not only to the group of metabolic diseases but also to the group of autoimmune diseases. This is due to the involvement of the immune system in the inflammation that occurs with T2DM. Various pro- and anti-inflammatory substances are secreted, especially cytokines in patients with T2DM. Cytokines secreted by adipose tissue are called adipokines, and leptin, adiponectin, resistin, omentin, TNF-α, and IL-6 have been implicated in T2DM. In cats, approximately 90% of diabetic cases are T2DM. Risk factors include older age, male sex, Burmese breed, presence of obesity, and insulin resistance. Diagnosis of a cat requires repeated testing and is complicated compared to human diagnosis. Based on similarities in the pathogenesis of T2DM between humans and cats, adipokines previously proposed as biomarkers for human T2DM may also serve in the diagnosis of this disease in cats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The extraction of a tooth exacerbates the stress in diabetic patients leading to diabetic complications so the aim was to evaluate the changes in blood cortisol, glucose, and oxygen saturation in type 2 diabetic patients during tooth extraction to pay special attention during a routine surgical procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research included 40 patients with type 2 diabetes with indications of tooth extraction. They were divided into two subgroups by 20 participants and split according to local anesthesia (lidocaine with additional adrenaline or lidocaine only). Cortisol, blood sugar, blood pressure, arterial pulse, and blood oxygen saturation were measured. Patients were also evaluated for their sensitivity to pain through the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). RESULTS Cortisol and glucose levels scientifically increased throughout the procedure. Meanwhile, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure and saturation showed no difference between the measurements during and after tooth extraction (p = .280; p = .090; p = .590, respectively). Most patients (60.0%) felt no pain during/after the procedure. None of the subjects was feeling more pain than 30 points by VAS. The comparison between groups receiving lidocaine showed no statistical differences when adding adrenaline to lidocaine. Evaluation of pain by VAS showed that more patients felt pain when they were receiving lidocaine without adrenaline. CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients require a more cautious approach when undergoing teeth extractions despite it being a routine procedure.

Abstract
Background Diabetes has emerged as one of the most serious and common chronic diseases of our times, causing life-threatening, disabling and costly complications, and reducing life expectancy. Studies have shown that cardiovascular morbidity is 1–3 times higher in diabetic patients than in normal people. There are many clinical and experimental data that prove that most of the complications of diabetes are related to atherosclerosis, which suggests that chronic hyperglycemia may induce an imbalance in the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells. Purpose This study aims to explore the relationship between QKI-7 and vascular endothelial cell dysfunction and lay a foundation for further clarifying the molecular mechanism of endothelial cell damage in the process of diabetes with atherosclerosis. Methods We chose blood samples and pluripotent stem cells and vascular endothelial cells of hospitalized patients with diabetes and diabetes atherosclerosis as research subjects. The expression levels of endothelial cell proliferation and genes related to endothelial cell proliferation were analyzed by RT-qPCR and Western blot, to study the influence of QKi-7 on the physiological state of endothelial cells. Through gene knockdown experiment, the effects of QKi-7 knockdown on functional genes and physiological functions of endothelial cells were analyzed. Finally, RNA immunoprecipitation was used to test the mutual effect among QKI-7 and the transcription level of functional genes, and the mRNA attenuation experiment proved that QKI-7 participated in the degradation process of functional genes. Results The findings of the RT-qPCR and Western blot tests revealed that QKI-7 was highly expressed in blood samples of diabetic patients and atherosclerosis as well as in endothelial cells induced by human pluripotent stem cells and human vascular endothelial cells after high-glucose treatment. Overexpression and high glucose of QKI-7 resulted in inhibiting expressed function genes CD144, NLGN1, and TSG6 and upregulation of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β, and IFN-γ, leading to excessive proliferation of endothelial cells. After QKI-7 gene knockdown, the expression levels of CD144, NLGN1, and TSG6, inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β, and IFN-γ, and the cell proliferation rate all returned to normal levels. RNA immunoprecipitation showed that QKi-7 interacted with CD144, NLGN1, and TSG6 mRNAs and was involved in the transcriptional degradation of functional genes through their interactions. Conclusion This research initially revealed the relevant molecular mechanism of QKI-7 leading to the excessive proliferation of endothelial cells in diabetic and atherosclerotic patients. In view of the role of QKI-7 in diabetic vascular complications, we provided a potential target for clinical diabetes treatment strategies in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The anti-inflammatory properties of cannabinoids have been shown. This study was conducted to assess effect of oleoylethanolamide (OEA) supplementation on glycemic status, insulin resistance (IR) and inflammatory factor in pre-diabetic individuals. METHODS This double-blind randomized clinical trial was done at Qazvin University of Medical Sciences in which 46 pre-diabetic patients were divided into two equal groups and received one 125 mg OEA capsule in the intervention group (23 subjects) and 125 mg capsule containing wheat flour in placebo group daily for 8 weeks. After collecting demographic information, at the beginning and end of the study, the questionnaires of physical activity, 24-hour food recall were completed and blood glucose (BG), plasma insulin level, IR, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. RESULTS At the beginning and end of the study, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of anthropometric indices, food intake and physical activity (P > 0.05). At the end of the study, consumption of OEA significantly reduced BS, insulin, IR, HbA1c, and CRP (P < 0.05). No significant change was observed in mentioned biochemical factors in placebo group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Given that OEA supplementation improved the glycemic status, IR and reduced the inflammatory factor, use of this supplement can be introduced as a useful supplement to control pre-diabetes status. TRIAL REGISTRATION The protocol of this clinical trial is registered with the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials ( http://www.IRCT.IR , identifier: IRCT20141025019669N16).

Abstract
Systemic inflammation is associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Circulating fatty acids (FA) are known to be related to these conditions, possibly through their role in inflammation, although different types of FAs can have opposite effects on inflammatory mediators. The aim of the present study was to analyze the association of plasma FAs with inflammatory biomarkers in a PREDIMED trial subsample after one year of intervention. In a one-year longitudinal study of 91 participants of the PREDIMED trial (Barcelona-Clinic center), plasma FAs and inflammatory biomarkers were analyzed using gas chromatography and ELISA, respectively. In baseline plasma, a multivariable-adjusted ordinary least squares regression model showed that n-3 polyunsaturated FAs concentrations were inversely associated with concentrations of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and E-selectin, whereas the level of the most abundant saturated FA, palmitic acid, was directly associated with concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) (β = 0.48 pg/mL, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.93 per 1-SD increase, p-value = 0.037). After one year of nutritional intervention, changes of plasma diet-derived total saturated FAs and palmitic acid were directly associated with changes in IL-6 (β = 0.59 pg/mL [95% CI: 0.28, 0.89] per 1-SD, p-value = 0.001; β = 0.64 pg/mL, 95% CI: 0.31, 0.98, p-value = 0.001), respectively, after correction for multiple testing. Our findings suggest that saturated FAs of dietary origin, especially palmitic acid, are directly involved in the increase of IL-6 in plasma.

Abstract
Gut microbiota (GM) comprises more than one thousand microorganisms between bacterial species, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, and represents the main actor of a wide net of molecular interactions, involving, among others, the endocrine system, immune responses, and metabolism. GM influences many endocrine functions such as adrenal steroidogenesis, thyroid function, sexual hormones, IGF-1 pathway and peptides produced in gastrointestinal system. It is fundamental in glycaemic control and obesity, while also exerting an important function in modulating the immune system and associated inflammatory disease. The result of this crosstalk in gut mucosa is the formation of the intestinal immunological niche. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) produces about 600 different peptides, it is involved in lipid and glucose metabolism and in some immune reactions through several adipokines. GM and VAT interact in a bidirectional fashion: while gut dysbiosis can modify VAT adipokines and hormone secretion, VAT hyperplasia modifies GM composition. Acquired or genetic factors leading to gut dysbiosis or increasing VAT (i.e., Western diet) induce a proinflammatory condition, which plays a pivotal role in the development of dysmetabolic and immunologic conditions, such as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is clearly associated with specific patterns of GM alterations, with an abundance or reduction of GM species involved in controlling mucosal barrier status, glycaemic levels and exerting a pro- or anti-inflammatory activity. All these factors could explain the higher incidence of several inflammatory conditions in Western countries; furthermore, besides the specific alterations observed in diabetes, this paradigm could represent a common pathway acting in many metabolic conditions and could pave the way to a new, interesting therapeutic approach.

Abstract
This review comprehensively summarizes epidemiologic evidence of COVID-19 in patients with Type 2 diabetes, explores pathophysiological mechanisms, and integrates recommendations and guidelines for patient management. We found that diabetes was a risk factor for diagnosed infection and poor prognosis of COVID-19. Patients with diabetes may be more susceptible to adverse outcomes associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection due to impaired immune function and possible upregulation of enzymes that mediate viral invasion. The chronic inflammation caused by diabetes, coupled with the acute inflammatory reaction caused by SARS-CoV-2, results in a propensity for inflammatory storm. Patients with diabetes should be aware of their increased risk for COVID-19.

Abstract
Obesity is a syndrome that attributes to many factors such as genetics, diet, lifestyle and environment, which includes an imbalance of immune regulation. IL-33, as a new member of the IL-1 family, is classically associated with type 2 immune responses. Here, IL-33 was investigated for its ability to optimize lipid aggregation and ameliorate the inflammatory response in obesity. In vitro experimental results showed that, compared with the induction group, the treatment with 30 ng/mL IL-33 displayed a reduction in the number of lipid droplets. The expression levels of AceCS1 and PPARγ also decreased in the 30 ng/mL IL-33 group compared to the induction group. For confirmation in vivo, three groups of C57BL/6 mice were treated for 14 weeks: mice in control were fed with a normal diet; mice in the HFD and IL-33 groups were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) and with sterile PBS or recombinant IL-33, respectively. Liver, muscle, spleen and four types of adipose tissue, as well as serum, were collected for further testing. Our data demonstrated that after 4-week treatment with recombinant IL-33, metabolic parameters in mice were improved significantly (visceral fat weight, glucose and insulin tolerance, liver steatosis, expression of lipid synthesis index and inflammatory response). Moreover, IL-33 treatment regulated the original distribution of IL-33 among different tissues. Hence, IL-33 modulated lipid metabolism and inflammatory response in obesity, which would be a novel therapeutic target for obesity and related metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Metabolic disorders are public health problems that require prevention and new efficient drugs for treatment. Cellular repressor of E1A-stimulated genes (CREG) is ubiquitously expressed in mature tissues and cells in mammals and plays a critical role in keeping cells or tissues in a mature, homeostatic state. Recently, CREG turns to be an important mediator in the development of metabolic disorders. Here in this review, we briefly discuss the structure and molecular regulation of CREG along with the therapeutic strategy to combat the metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Ischemic heart disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the advances in medical management and catheter-based therapy, mortality remains high, as does the risk of developing heart failure. Regenerative therapies have been widely used as an alternative option to repair the damaged heart mainly because of their paracrine-related beneficial effects. Although cell-based therapy has been demonstrated as feasible and safe, randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses show little consistent benefit from treatments with adult-derived stem cells. Mounting evidence from our group and others supports that cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities impair stem cell potential thus hampering their autologous use. This review aims to better understand the influence of diabetes on stem cell potential. For this purpose, we will first discuss the most recent advances in the mechanistic understanding of the effects of diabetes on stem cell phenotype, function, and molecular fingerprint to further elaborate on diabetes-induced alterations in stem cell extracellular vesicle profile. Although we acknowledge that multiple sources of stem or progenitor cells are used for regenerative purposes, we will focus on bone marrow hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells, mesenchymal stem cells residing in the bone marrow, and adipose tissue and briefly discuss endothelial colony-forming cells.

Abstract
The presence of islet autoantibodies and islet reactive T cells (T+) in adults with established type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been shown to identify those patients with more severe β-cell dysfunction. However, at what stage in the progression toward clinical T2D does islet autoimmunity emerge as an important component influencing β-cell dysfunction? In this ancillary study to the Restoring Insulin SEcretion (RISE) Study, we investigated the prevalence of and association with β-cell dysfunction of T+ and autoantibodies to the 65 kDa glutamic acid decarboxylase antigen (GADA) in obese pre-diabetes adults with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and recently diagnosed treatment naïve (Ndx) T2D. We further investigated the effect of 12 months of RISE interventions (metformin or liraglutide plus metformin, or with 3 months of insulin glargine followed by 9 months of metformin or placebo) on islet autoimmune reactivity. We observed GADA(+) in 1.6% of NdxT2D and 4.6% of IGT at baseline, and in 1.6% of NdxT2D and 5.3% of IGT at 12 months, but no significant associations between GADA(+) and β-cell function. T(+) was observed in 50% of NdxT2D and 60.4% of IGT at baseline, and in 68.4% of NdxT2D and 83.9% of IGT at 12 months. T(+) NdxT2D were observed to have significantly higher fasting glucose (p = 0.004), and 2 h glucose (p = 0.0032), but significantly lower steady state C-peptide (sscpep, p = 0.007) compared to T(-) NdxT2D. T(+) IGT participants demonstrated lower but not significant (p = 0.025) acute (first phase) C-peptide response to glucose (ACPRg) compared to T(-) IGT. With metformin treatment, T(+) participants were observed to have a significantly lower Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c, p = 0.002) and fasting C-peptide (p = 0.002) compared to T(-), whereas T(+) treated with liraglutide + metformin had significantly lower sscpep (p = 0.010) compared to T(-) participants. In the placebo group, T(+) participants demonstrated significantly lower ACPRg (p = 0.001) compared to T(-) participants. In summary, T(+) were found in a large percentage of obese pre-diabetes adults with IGT and in recently diagnosed T2D. Moreover, T(+) were significantly correlated with treatment effects and β-cell dysfunction. Our results demonstrate that T(+) are an important component in T2D.

Abstract
The hormonal modifications observed in post-menopausal are related to increased adiposity and alteration in the lipid profile besides physical and psychological changes. Physical exercises may attenuate these conditions and have been associated with low-grade inflammatory status, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of dyslipidemia on the effect of physical exercise on inflammatory markers IL6, IL10, and TNF-α in obese post-menopausal women. A randomized clinical trial was carried out in seventy women divided into four groups: exercise without dyslipidemia (EG/n = 11); exercise with dyslipidemia (EGD = 24); control with dyslipidemia (CGD/n = 22); and control without dyslipidemia (CG/n = 13). The serum values of IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α were measured before and after the intervention period, and the exercise program lasted 20 weeks, in three weekly sessions of 75 min each, with aerobic and strength exercises. The comparison of means was performed using the ANOVA test, repeated measures to analyze the interaction between the group and intervention time. There were a significant reduction in IL-6 values and an increase in IL-10/IL-6 and IL-10/TNF-α ratios only in the EG group. For serum TNF-α values, the EG and EGD groups showed significant reductions. The groups that practiced exercises did not present significant variation in the levels of IL-10. However, the CGD and GC groups showed a significant reduction in IL-10 after the intervention period.

Abstract
Vitamin A (VA), which is stored in several forms in most tissues, is required to maintain metabolite homeostasis and other processes, including the visual cycle, energy balance, epithelial cell integrity, and infection resistance. In recent years, VA molecules, also known as retinoids, have been extensively explored and used in the treatment of skin disorders and immune-related tumors. To date, several observational and interventional studies have explored the relationship between VA status and the pathogenesis of diabetes. In particular, VA micronutrients have been shown to regulate pancreatic development, β-cell function, pancreatic innate immune responses, and pancreatic stellate cells phenotypes through multiple mechanisms. However, there are still many problems to be proven or resolved. In this review, we summarize and discuss recent and available evidence on VA biological metabolism in the pancreas. Analysis of the effects of VA on metabolism in the pancreas will contribute to our understanding of the supportive physiological roles of VA in pancreas protection.

Abstract
Copper have been reported to be associated with metabolic diseases. However, results on copper exposure with blood lipid profiles are inconsistent, and the underlying mechanisms of this association remain unclear. This study focused on investigating associations between urinary copper and blood lipid profiles; and exploring the potential role of systemic inflammation in such relationships. Concentrations of urinary copper, plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), and four blood lipid parameters (e.g., Total cholesterol [TC], triglycerides [TG], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C]) were measured in the adult participants from Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. The associations between copper, CRP, and four blood lipids were assessed by the multivariable linear regression models, and the 3D mesh graphs was used to examine the joint effects of copper exposure and CRP on four blood lipid parameters. In addition, we used mediation analysis to investigate the mediated effects of CRP in the relationships between copper exposure and blood lipid profiles. Each 1% increase in urinary copper was statistically significantly associated with a 5.32% (95% CI: 2.48%, 8.24%) increase in TG after adjusting for the confounders (P < 0.05). No significant associations were observed between urinary copper and the other three blood lipid parameters (all P > 0.05). In addition, urinary copper increased monotonically with plasma CRP elevation, which in turn, was positively associated with TC, TG, and LDL-C and negatively related to HDL-C (all P < 0.05). Results from 3D mesh graphs demonstrated that increased levels of plasma CRP with higher urinary copper corresponded to higher TC, TG, LDL-C, and lower HDL-C concentrations. Mediation analysis observed that CRP mediated 6.27% in the relationships of urinary copper and TG. These findings suggest that systemic inflammation partly mediated the association between copper exposure and abnormal blood lipid, and may contribute to the development of dyslipidemias.

Abstract
Obesity is one of major health burdens of modern society as it contributes to the growing prevalence of its related comorbidities, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some cancers. A series of innate immune cells, especially macrophages, and adipocytes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity. Mitochondrial dysfunction, which is induced by obesity, are critical mediators in initiating inflammation in macrophages and adipocytes, and subsequent systemic insulin resistance. In this review, we discuss new findings on how obesity impairs mitochondrial function in macrophages and adipocytes and how this dysfunction contributes to obesity and its comorbidities. We also summarize drugs that treat metabolic diseases by targeting mitochondrial dysfunction.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has threatened every civilian as a global pandemic. The immune system poses the critical interactive chain between the human body and the virus. Here, we make efforts to examine whether comorbidity with type 2 diabetes (T2D) affects the immunological response in COVID-19 patients. Methods We conducted a retrospective pilot study investigating immunological characteristics of confirmed cases of COVID-19 with or without comorbid T2D. Two subcohorts of sex- and age-matched participants were eligible for data analysis, of which 33 participants were with T2D and the remaining 37 were nondiabetic (NDM). Cellular immunity was assessed by flow cytometric determination of surface markers including CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD16, and CD56 in peripheral blood. Levels of C reactive protein, immunoglobulin (IgG, IgM, IgA, and IgE), and complements (C3, C4) were detected by rate nephelometry immunoassay. And Th1/Th2 cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and IFN-γ) were detected by Cytometric Bead Array. Results Neutrophil counts were found to be significantly higher in the T2D group than in the NDM group and had a significant relevance with clinical severity. Lymphocyte frequencies showed no significant differences in the two groups. However, the proportions and absolute counts of T, Tc, Th, and NK cells decreased in both groups to different degrees. An abnormal increase in neutrophil count and a decrease in lymphocyte subpopulations may represent risk factors of COVID-19 severity. The level of IgG, IgM, IgA, C3, and C4 showed no significant difference between the two groups, while the IgE levels were higher in the T2D group than in the NDM group (p < 0.05). Th1 cytokines including IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-6, as well as CRP, appeared significantly higher in the T2D group. Conclusions The COVID-19 patients comorbid with T2D demonstrated distinguishable immunological parameters, which represented clinical relevancies with the predisposed disease severity in T2D.
