Abstract
The challenge of preserving food quality without relying on harmful antioxidants requires the exploration of natural alternatives, such as chia-derived peptides (YACLKVK, KLKKNL, KLLKKYL, and KKLLKI). The antioxidant properties and stability to processing were evaluated using DPPH and ABTS, iron-reducing, ORAC, and copper chelating assays. The effects of autoclaving, heat treatment with glucose, and ultrasound on the antioxidant activity of the top-performing peptide were examined. YACLKVK displayed the highest antioxidant response with 87.25 ± 2.47 %, 93.65 ± 0.79 %, 0.418 ± 0.018 abs, 44.06 ± 0.78 μM TE/mL, and 86.49 ± 0.12 % in the DPPH, ABTS, iron-reducing capacity, ORAC, and copper chelating assays at 800 μg/mL (DPPH) and 1000 μg/mL, respectively. Autoclaving, heat, and ultrasound treatments reduced YACLKVK's DPPH scavenging to 63.09 ± 0.44 % and 74.15 ± 0.27 % and its Cu chelating capacity to 58.98 ± 1.28 %. YACLKVK retained over 50 % of its antioxidant capacity post-processing. These findings suggest its application as a potent natural antioxidant in food systems, particularly in processed foods where oxidation affects shelf life and quality. Incorporating YACLKVK could enhance food preservation, aligning with consumer preferences for natural-origin ingredients. Studies on commercial scalability, safety, and regulatory compliance will be essential for its widespread adoption in the food industry.

Abstract
Cu2+ ions led DNA damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is widely known biological phenomena. The ionic radii of Cu2+ and Mg2+ being similar, the binding of Cu2+ ions to DNA is expected to be similar to that of the Mg2+ ions. However, little is known how Cu2+ ions bind in different parts (phosphate, major and minor grooves) of a double-strand (ds) DNA, especially at atomic level. In the present study, we employ molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to investigate the binding of Cu2+ ions with the Dickerson DNA, a B-type dodecamer double stranded (ds) DNA. The binding characteristics of Cu2+ and Mg2+ ions with this dsDNA are compared to get an insight into the differences and similarities in binding behavior of both ions. Unlike Mg2+ ions, the first hydration shell of Cu2+ is found to be labile, thus it shows both direct and indirect binding with the dsDNA, i.e., binding through displacement of water from the hydration shell or through the hydration shell. Though the binding propensity of Cu2+ ions with dsDNA is observed relatively stronger, the binding order to phosphates, major groove, and minor groove is found qualitatively similar (phosphates > major groove > minor groove) for both ions. The study gives a deep understanding of Cu2+ binding to DNA, which could be helpful in rationalizing the Cu2+ led ROS-mediated DNA damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional profiles and guidelines are determined by various associations to ensure optimum health of cats and provide pet food manufacturers nutritional recommendations to ensure the well-balanced and nutritionally adequate pet food. OBJECTIVES It was aimed to determine some trace elements and macro minerals in prescription and non-prescription dry cat foods and compare the contents with the suggested guidelines to evaluate the potential in-compliance. METHODS A total of 96 dry cat foods were evaluated. Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Zn, Mg, Ca and P concentrations were analysed in prescription dry cat foods developed for gastrointestinal diseases-GI (n = 18), renal diseases-R (n = 15), urinary diseases-U (n = 8), obesity-O (n = 10) and non-prescription-N-P (n = 45) foods from different flavours and brands by ICP-OES. RESULTS Ten precent of the O group exceeded the upper limit, and 15.5% of the N-P group failed to provide a nutritional minimum level. 4.44% of prescription foods were below the minimum recommended Mn level according to the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), and 66% of N-P foods were below the minimum adult maintenance value recommended by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). One hundred percent non-compliance with the guidelines in the GI and U groups was recorded. 22.2% of the GI group was lower, and 5.55% of the GI group was higher than the recommended levels by FEDIAF, which reflects the 27.7% in compliance. While all the prescription foods have 100% compliance with the determined minimum level of guidelines, 11.1% of N-P foods were below the minimum recommended level. In compliance with the guidelines for Ca was noted in the O and U groups (10% and 12.5%, respectively). The P ratio in all prescription food groups except for GI was below the minimum level determined by AAFCO. CONCLUSIONS In all food groups, mean Cu, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca and P concentrations were between the minimum and maximum limits recommended by FEDIAF. However, the mean Se level was above the upper legal limit in all food groups, and the Zn level was below the minimum recommended level in the N-P food group. Besides the mean values, a high number of foods in each group show a broad in-compliance with the guidelines.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is essential for brain development and function, yet its overload induces neuronal damage and contributes to neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders. Multiple studies demonstrated that Cu neurotoxicity is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, routinely assessed by reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. Nonetheless, the role of alterations of mitochondrial dynamics in brain mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Cu exposure is still debatable. Therefore, the objective of the present narrative review was to discuss the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in Cu-induced neurotoxicity with special emphasis on its influence on brain mitochondrial fusion and fission, as well as mitochondrial clearance by mitophagy. Existing data demonstrate that, in addition to mitochondrial electron transport chain inhibition, membrane damage, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction, Cu overexposure inhibits mitochondrial fusion by down-regulation of Opa1, Mfn1, and Mfn2 expression, while promoting mitochondrial fission through up-regulation of Drp1. It has been also demonstrated that Cu exposure induces PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy in brain cells, that is considered a compensatory response to Cu-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. However, long-term high-dose Cu exposure impairs mitophagy, resulting in accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria. Cu-induced inhibition of mitochondrial biogenesis due to down-regulation of PGC-1α further aggravates mitochondrial dysfunction in brain. Studies from non-brain cells corroborate these findings, also offering additional evidence that dysregulation of mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy may be involved in Cu-induced damage in brain. Finally, Cu exposure induces cuproptosis in brain cells due mitochondrial proteotoxic stress, that may also contribute to neuronal damage and pathogenesis of certain brain diseases. Based on these findings, it is assumed that development of mitoprotective agents, specifically targeting mechanisms of mitochondrial quality control, would be useful for prevention of neurotoxic effects of Cu overload.

Abstract
Zinc deficiency causes dysgeusia and dermatitis as well as anemia. As approximately half of dialysis patients have zinc deficiency, zinc supplementation should be considered in case of erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA)-hyporesponsive anemia. We report a case of a chronic dialysis patient with copper deficiency anemia caused by standard-dose zinc supplementation. The patient was a 70-year-old woman who had received maintenance hemodialysis for 8 years due to diabetic nephropathy. She had been treated with weekly administration of darbepoetin 30 μg for renal anemia, which resulted in Hb 12 to 14 g/dL. She had no dysgeusia. When zinc deficiency (44 μg/dL) had been identified 4 months earlier, 50 mg daily zinc acetate hydrate (Nobelzin®), which is the standard dose, was started. Unexpectedly, her anemia progressed slowly with macrocytosis together with granulocytopenia. Her platelet count did not decrease at that time. Laboratory tests revealed a marked decrease of serum copper (< 4 μg/dL) and ceruloplasmin (< 2 mg/dL), although serum zinc was within the normal limit (125 μg/dL). We discontinued zinc acetate and started copper supplementation including cocoa for 1 month. Her anemia and granulocytopenia were dramatically restored coincident with the increase in both serum copper and ceruloplasmin. Copper supplementation also improved her iron status as assessed by transferrin saturation and ferritin. Clinicians should monitor both zinc and copper status in anemic dialysis patients during zinc supplementation, as both are important to drive normal hematopoiesis.

Abstract
Micronutrient (MN) status alterations (both depletion and deficiency) are associated with several complications and worse outcomes in critically ill patients. On the other side of the spectrum, improving MN status has been shown to be a potential co-adjuvant therapy. This review aims to collect existing data to better guide research in the critical care setting. This narrative review was conducted by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine Feeding, Rehabilitation, Endocrinology, and Metabolism MN group. The primary objective was to identify studies focusing on individual MNs in critically ill patients, selecting the MNs that appear to be most relevant and most frequently investigated in the last decade: A, B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, C, D, E, copper, iron, selenium, zinc, and carnitine. Given the limited number of interventional studies for most MNs, observational studies were included. For each selected MN, the review summarizes the main form and functions, special needs and risk factors, optimal treatment strategies, pharmacological dosing, and clinical implications all specific to critically ill patients. A rigorous rebalancing of research strategies and priorities is needed to improve clinical practice. An important finding is that high-dose monotherapy of MNs is not recommended. Basal daily needs must be provided, with higher doses in diseases with known higher needs, and identified deficiencies treated. Finally, the review provides a list of ongoing trials on MNs in critically ill patients and identifies a priority list of future research topics.

Abstract
Pediatric macrocytic anemia has a varied etiology, including nutritional deficiencies, such as folate or B12 deficiency, hematological factors, and micronutrient deficiencies, such as copper deficiency. We present the case of a 9-year-old girl with a complex medical history and gastrojejunal tube (G-J tube)-dependent nutrition who developed macrocytic anemia due to copper deficiency. Despite receiving enteral nutrition, her dietary copper intake was insufficient, leading to hematological abnormalities. Copper supplementation resulted in the normalization of hematological indices, highlighting the importance of considering trace element deficiencies in patients reliant on enteral nutrition, particularly in those receiving jejunal feeds. This case underscores the necessity for vigilant monitoring and optimized micronutrient supplementation in such patients given the lack of standardized guidelines for copper supplementation.

Abstract
Background Laboratory measurements of trace elements such as magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in red blood cells (RBCs) are essential for assessing nutritional status and diagnosing metal toxicity. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an ICP-MS method for quantifying these elements in RBCs. Methods Packed RBCs were aliquoted and diluted in an alkaline diluent solution containing internal standards, 0.1 % Triton X-100, 0.1 % EDTA, and 1 % ammonium hydroxide. The resulting diluted specimen was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to quantitatively determine the levels of Mg, Cu, and Zn. The method underwent validation for accuracy, precision, method comparison, linearity, analytical sensitivity, and carryover. Additionally, retrospective data were analyzed, and non-parametric reference intervals were calculated. Results Accuracy and linearity fell within the expected range of ≤±15 % for all analytes. Within-run, between-run, and total imprecision were ≤15 % coefficient of variation. All other validation experiments met the established acceptance criteria. Retrospective data analysis was conducted on patient samples using the method. The application of Tukey's HSD test for multiple comparisons revealed statistically significant mean differences (p < 0.05) in Mg, Cu, and Zn concentrations between all pairwise groups of age and sex, except for the mean Cu concentration in adult males versus females and the mean Mg concentrations in adult versus minor males. Conclusions The presented method was successfully validated and met the criteria for clinical use. Retrospective data analysis of patient results demonstrated the method's suitability for assessing nutritional deficiency and toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess whether the micronutrients zinc and copper, provided by human milk additives, are sufficient for very low birth weight preterm infants. METHOD A phase 1 randomized double-blind controlled trial was conducted with very low birth weight preterm infants. This is a secondary analysis of copper and zinc. Sixty-six newborns were part of the initial sample, with forty participating and reaching the final stage of the study. Inclusion criteria were: gestational age less than 37 weeks, birth weight greater than or equal to 750 g and less than or equal to 1500 g, small or appropriate for gestational age, exclusively receiving human milk at a volume greater than or equal to 100 mL per kilogram per day, and hemodynamically stable. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: intervention, Lioneo (received human milk with additive based on lyophilized human milk), n = 20, and control, HMCA (received human milk with commercial additive based on cow's milk protein), n = 20, and their serum levels of zinc and copper were measured on the first and twenty-first days. RESULTS There was a reduction in intragroup zinc serum levels from the first to the twenty-first day of the study (p < 0.01). There was no intergroup difference. No difference was found in serum copper levels. CONCLUSION Human milk additives were not sufficient to maintain adequate zinc serum levels in very low birth weight newborns. It was not possible to affirm whether human milk additives were sufficient to maintain adequate serum copper levels in the studied sample. UTN: U1111-1220-0550.

Abstract
Copper is an important mineral, and moderate copper is required to maintain physiological processes in nervous system including cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Over the past few decades, copper induced cell death, named cuprotosis, has attracted increasing attention. Several lines of evidence have confirmed cuprotosis exerts pivotal role in diverse of pathological processes, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and I/R injury. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the interaction mechanism between copper-mediated cell death and I/R injury may reveal the significant alterations about cellular copper-mediated homeostasis in physiological and pathophysiological conditions, as well as therapeutic strategies deciphering copper-induced cell death in cerebral I/R injury.

Abstract
Exposure to copper (Cu) has been associated with metabolic disorders in animals and humans, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. One-day-old broiler chickens, numbering a total of 192, were nourished with dietary intakes that contained varying concentrations of Cu, specifically 11, 110, 220, and 330 mg/kg of Cu, for a period extending over a duration of 7 wk. As a result of the study, Cu exposure resulted in vacuolization, fragmentation of mitochondria cristae, and the increase of autophagosomes in hepatocytes. Metabolomics analysis illustrated that Cu caused a total of 59 different metabolites in liver, predominantly associated with the glycerophospholipid metabolic pathway, leading to metabolic disruption. Moreover, high-Cu diet markedly reduced the levels of AMPKα1, p-AMPKα1, mTOR, and p-mTOR and enhanced the expression levels of the autophagy-related factors (Atg5, Dynein, Beclin1, and LC3-II). Overall, Cu exposure caused chicken liver injury and resulted in disturbed metabolic processes and mediated autophagy primarily through the AMPK-mTOR axis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As an essential trace element, Copper (Cu) participates in numerous physiological and biological reactions in the body. Cu is closely related to heart health, and an imbalance of Cu will cause cardiac dysfunction. The research aims to examine how Cu deficiency affects the heart, assess mitochondrial function in the hearts, and disclose possible mechanisms of its influence. METHODS Weaned mice were fed Cu-deficient diets and intraperitoneally given copper sulfate (CuSO4) to correct the Cu deficiency. The pathological change of the heart was assessed using histological inspection. Cardiac function and oxidative stress levels were evaluated by biochemical assay kits. ELISA and ATP detection kits were used to detect the levels of complexes I-IV in the mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) and ATP, respectively. Real time PCR was utilized to determine mRNA expressions, and Western blotting was adopted to determine protein expressions, of molecules related to mitochondrial fission and fusion. RESULTS Cu deficiency gave rise to elevated heart index, cardiac histological alterations and oxidation injury, increased serum levels of creatine kinase (CK), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (CK-MB) together with increased malondialdehyde (MDA) production, decreased the glutathione (GSH), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), and Catalase (CAT) activities or contents. Besides, Cu deficiency caused mitochondrial damage characterized by decreased contents of complexes I-IV in the MRC and ATP in the heart. In the meantime, Cu deficiency also reduced protein and mRNA expressions of factors associated with mitochondrial fusion, including Mfn1 and Mfn2, while significantly increased factors Drip1 and Fis1 related to mitochondrial fission. However, adding CuSO4 improved the above changes significantly. CONCLUSION According to research results, Cu deficiency can cause heart damage in mice, along with oxidative damage and mitochondrial dysfunction, which are closely related to mitochondrial fusion and fission disorders.

Abstract
A fluorescent molecule, pyridine-coupled bis-anthracene (PBA), has been developed for the selective fluorescence turn-on detection of Cu2+. Interestingly, the ligand PBA also exhibited a red-shifted ratiometric fluorescence response in the presence of water. Thus, a ratiometric water sensor has been utilized as a selective fluorescence turn-on sensor for Cu2+, achieving a 10-fold enhancement in the fluorescence and quantum yield at 446 nm, with a lower detection limit of 0.358 μM and a binding constant of 1.3 × 106 M-1. For practical applications, sensor PBA can be used to detect Cu2+ in various types of soils like clay soil, field soil and sand. The interaction of the PBA-Cu(II) complex with transport proteins like bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ct-DNA has been investigated through fluorescence titration experiments. Additionally, the structural optimization of PBA and the PBA-Cu(II) complex has been demonstrated by DFT, and the interaction of the PBA-Cu(II) complex with BSA and ct-DNA has been analyzed using theoretical docking studies.

Abstract
THE OBJECTIVE Of the present study was to assess essential trace element and mineral levels in serum, hair, and urine of healthy first-year students from Turkmenistan (n = 73) in comparison to students from Iran (n = 78) or Russia (n = 95). MATERIALS AND METHODS Examination of foreign students was performed within two days after arrival to Russia during medical examination prior admission to RUDN University. Serum, hair, and urine trace element and mineral levels were assessed with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). RESULTS The data demonstrate that the levels of trace elements and minerals in students from Turkmenistan share high similarity to elemental profiles of students from Iran. In comparison to students from Russia, subjects originating from Iran and Turkmenistan are characterized by lower serum cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), zinc (Zn) levels, higher urinary Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, V, and Zn, lower urinary Co and hair Mo, Se, and Zn content. Concomitantly, students from Turkmenistan were characterized by lower urinary Cr and Cu, serum Cu and V levels, higher circulating Zn concentration, as well as the lower hair Cr, Cu, iodine (I) and magnesium (Mg) content in comparison to Iranian subjects. The discriminant analysis demonstrated that hair, serum, and urinary trace element and mineral levels contributed to complete discrimination between the groups of students from different countries. CONCLUSIONS The high similarity of trace element and mineral status of students from Turkmenistan and Iran is expected to be mediated by similar geochemical conditions in the bordering countries.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development. This metal serves as a constituent element or enzyme cofactor that participates in many biochemical pathways and plays a key role in photosynthesis, respiration, ethylene sensing, and antioxidant systems. The physiological significance of Cu uptake and compartmentalization in plants has been underestimated, despite the importance of Cu in cellular metabolic processes. As a micronutrient, Cu has low cellular requirements in plants. However, its bioavailability may be significantly reduced in alkaline or organic matter-rich soils. Cu deficiency is a severe and widespread nutritional disorder that affects plants. In contrast, excessive levels of available Cu in soil can inhibit plant photosynthesis and induce cellular oxidative stress. This can affect plant productivity and potentially pose serious health risks to humans via bioaccumulation in the food chain. Plants have evolved mechanisms to strictly regulate Cu uptake, transport, and cellular homeostasis during long-term environmental adaptation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse functions of Cu chelators, chaperones, and transporters involved in Cu homeostasis and their regulatory mechanisms in plant responses to varying Cu availability conditions. Finally, we identified that future research needs to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms regulating Cu deficiency or stress in plants. This will pave the way for improving the Cu utilization efficiency and/or Cu tolerance of crops grown in alkaline or Cu-contaminated soils.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Double malnutrition (co-existing overnutrition and undernutrition) is increasingly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa due to rapid epidemiological and nutritional transitions. In this region, studies of double malnutrition have largely been conducted at country and household level, with individual-level studies primarily limited to children and women of reproductive age. We investigated the prevalence and determinants of individual-level double malnutrition in middle-aged and older adults who constitute an increasing proportion of the sub-Saharan African population. METHODS 250 individuals aged 40-70 years (50% women) and resident in the Agincourt Health and socio-Demographic Surveillance System in rural Mpumalanga province, South Africa, were randomly selected. Double malnutrition was defined as overweight/obesity and anaemia only, overweight/obesity and iodine insufficiency, or overweight/obesity and any micronutrient deficiency (anaemia and/or iodine insufficiency). The Chi-squared goodness of fit test was used to compare the expected and observed numbers of individuals with the type of double malnutrition. Logistic regression was used to investigate determinants of each type of double malnutrition. RESULTS Double malnutrition was present in 22-36% of participants, depending on the definition used. All types of double malnutrition were more common in women than in men (overweight/obesity and anaemia: 34% vs. 10.2%, p < 0.01; overweight/obesity and iodine insufficiency: 32% vs. 12.2%, p < 0.01 and overweight/obesity and any micronutrient deficiency: 50.5% vs. 20.4%, p < 0.01). There were no differences between the overall expected and observed numbers of individuals with combinations of overweight and micronutrient deficiencies [overweight/obesity and anaemia (p = 0.28), overweight/obesity and iodine insufficiency (p = 0.27) or overweight/obesity and any micronutrient deficiency (p = 0.99)]. In models adjusted for socio-demographic factors, HIV and antiretroviral drug status, and food security or dietary diversity, men were 84-85% less likely than women to have overweight/obesity and anaemia, 65% less likely to have overweight/obesity and iodine insufficiency and 74% less likely to have overweight/obesity and any micronutrient deficiency. CONCLUSIONS Individual-level double malnutrition is prevalent in middle-aged and older adults in a rural sub-Saharan African community. Interventions to improve nutrition in similar settings should target individuals throughout the life course and a focus on women may be warranted.

Abstract
Copper is an indispensable trace element in metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between copper and reproductive health, and possibly provide new insights for diagnosis and treatment. This study was based on data extracted from the NHANES database (2013-2014 and 2015-2016). The t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square test, multiple linear regression, and restricted cubic spline analysis were used. Serum copper levels were significantly higher in women with gestational diabetes than in those without gestational diabetes (P = 0.0150). Women with higher copper levels and smoking habits tended to deliver overweight babies (P = 0.028). Women with diabetes had higher serum copper and were prone to deliver overweight babies (P = 0.024). Serum copper levels showed a positive relationship with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels (P < 0.0001). In this study, serum copper levels were found to be associated with reproductive health in women. Further studies are required to draw causal inferences.

Abstract
Ovarian aging is marked by a reduction in the quantity and quality of ovarian follicles, leading to a decline in female fertility and ovarian endocrine function. While the biological characteristics of ovarian aging are well-established, the exact mechanisms underlying this process remain elusive. Recent studies underscore the vital role of trace elements (TEs) in maintaining ovarian function. Imbalances in TEs can lead to ovarian aging, characterized by reduced enzyme activity, hormonal imbalances, ovulatory disorders, and decreased fertility. A comprehensive understanding of the relationship between systemic and cellular TEs balance and ovarian aging is critical for developing treatments to delay aging and manage age-related conditions. This review consolidates current insights into TEs homeostasis and its impact on ovarian aging, assesses how altered TEs metabolism affects ovarian aging, and suggests future research directions to prolong ovarian reproductive life. These studies are expected to offer novel approaches for mitigating ovarian aging.

Abstract
The gallstone disease is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Dietary trace minerals have been proven to be closely related to many metabolic diseases, and this study aims to explore the association between intakes of dietary trace minerals (copper, iron, selenium, and zinc) and gallstone disease (GSD). Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2017 to 2018, intakes of dietary trace minerals and GSD data were obtained through a 24-hour recall and diagnostic questionnaire, respectively. Weighted logistic regression models were used to identify the association between intakes of dietary trace minerals and the prevalence of GSD, and the results were presented as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). A total of 4077 participants were included in the final analysis, of which 456 participants had GSD and 3621 participants serving as the control group. No significant associations between GSD and intakes of dietary trace minerals (iron, selenium, and zinc) were found. However, after adjusting for all covariates, significant association was demonstrated between dietary copper (Cu) intake and GSD (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.45-0.98). After conducting a weighted quantile logistic regression, a significant negative correlation was also found between dietary Cu intake and highest GSD quartile (Q4) (OR = 0.45, 95% CI = 0.26-0.80). Following the research outlined above, no association was found between intakes of dietary trace minerals (iron, selenium, and zinc) and GSD; however, a linear negative association was identified between dietary Cu intake and GSD.

Abstract
The accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has raised public awareness due to harmful contamination to both human and marine creatures. This study was designed to determine the concentration of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) in the intestine, kidney, muscle, gill, and liver tissues of local commercial edible fish, fourfinger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum), and black pomfret (Parastromateus niger) collected from Morib (M) and Kuala Selangor (KS). Among the studied PTEs, Cu and Zn were essential elements to regulate body metabolism with certain dosages required while Cd and Ni were considered as non-essential elements that posed chronic and carcinogenic risk. The concentration of PTEs in fish tissue samples was analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS). By comparing the concentration of PTEs in fish tissues as a bioindicator, the environmental risk of Morib was more serious than Kuala Selangor because both fish species collected from Morib resulted in a higher PTEs concentration. For an average 62 kg adult with a fish ingestion rate (FIR) of 0.16 kg/person/day in Malaysia, the estimated weekly intake (EWI) of Cd from the consumption of E. tetradactylum (M: 0.0135 mg/kg; KS: 0.0134 mg/kg) and P. niger (M: 0.0140 mg/kg; KS: 0.0132 mg/kg) had exceeded the provisional tolerable weekly intake (Cd: 0.007 mg/kg) established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and oral reference dose (ORD) values of Cd (0.001 mg/kg/day) as provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regional screening level, thus it posed chronic risks for daily basis consumption. Besides, the value of the carcinogenic risk of Cd (0.7-3 to 0.8-3) and Ni (0.5-3 to 0.6-3) were in between the acceptable range (10-6 to 10-4) of the health index that indicates a relatively low possibility cancer occurrence to the consumers in both Morib and Kuala Selangor. This study recommended FIR to be 0.80 kg/person/day to reduce the possibility of posing chronic and carcinogenic risks while at the same time obtaining the essential nutrients from the fish.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trace elements and vitamins, named together micronutrients (MNs), are essential for human metabolism. The importance of MNs in common pathologies is recognized by recent research, with deficiencies significantly impacting the outcome. OBJECTIVE This short version of the guideline aims to provide practical recommendations for clinical practice. METHODS An extensive search of the literature was conducted in the databases Medline, PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar, and CINAHL for the initial guideline. The search focused on physiological data, historical evidence (for papers published before PubMed release in 1996), and observational and/or randomized trials. For each MN, the main functions, optimal analytical methods, impact of inflammation, potential toxicity, and provision during enteral or parenteral nutrition were addressed. The SOP wording was applied for strength of recommendations. RESULTS The limited number of interventional trials prevented meta-analysis and led to a low level of evidence for most recommendations. The recommendations underwent a consensus process, which resulted in a percentage of agreement (%): strong consensus required of >90 % of votes. Altogether the guideline proposes 3 general recommendations and specific recommendations for the 26 MNs. Monitoring and management strategies are proposed. CONCLUSION This short version of the MN guideline should facilitate handling of the MNs in at-risk diseases, whilst offering practical advice on MN provision and monitoring during nutritional support.

Abstract
Background and Aims Dressings containing silver ions are an accepted and common option for wound treatment. However, some wounds fail to heal at the desired rate despite optimal management. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of copper dressings in noninfected wounds. Methods The study included 20 patients aged 18-85 years with 2-30 cm2 noninfected wounds treated for 17-41 days with silver wound dressings that failed to reduce by >50% the wound size, who were then treated with copper dressings. Ten patients were diabetics, 10 suffered from hypertension, and six suffered from peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Two patients suffered from two wounds. Most were amputation wounds below the knee. Results Five patients dropped out from the study due to complications not related to the wound. The mean period of silver and copper dressings treatment was 25.6 and 29.6 days, respectively (p = 0.25; t test). None of the wounds became infected. Comparing a period of 25 days, during the copper dressings treatment, the mean wound area reduction was ~2.4 times higher than during the silver dressing treatment, 87.35 ± 22.4% versus 37.02 ± 25.11% (mean ± SD; p < 0.001; paired t test), respectively. The average decline during the silver and copper treatments were 1.2% and 2.14% per day (p = 0.002; multiple regression analysis), respectively. Conclusions The enhanced wound healing process observed with the copper dressings may be explained by the integral role of copper throughout all physiological skin repair processes. Silver in contrast has no physiological role in wound healing. The results of our study confirm case reports showing enhanced wound healing of hard-to-heal wounds with copper dressings, both of infected and noninfected wounds. Taken together, the results of the current study support the hypothesis that the application of copper dressings in situ for noninfected wounds results in the stimulation of the wound healing processes, as opposed to silver dressings.

Abstract
Superfluous molybdenum (Mo) and cadmium (Cd) in the environment are detrimental to organisms through their accumulation. The NF-κB/TNF-α axis plays a vital part in regulating necroptosis and apoptosis. However, the impacts of Mo and/or Cd on myocardium injury in ducks and the function of NF-κB/TNF-α axis are not clear in the process. In this research, ducks exposed to different dosages of Mo and/or Cd were applied as the study object. The findings substantiated that the accumulation of Mo and/or Cd caused elements imbalance and necroptosis in myocardial tissue. As p-NF-κB/TNF-α expression up-regulated, RIPK1/RIPK3/p-MLKL expression significantly increased in all treatment groups, while the expression of c-caspase-8/3 markedly decreased. Moreover, apoptosis rate obviously decreased in Cd treated groups and clearly elevated in Mo group. Mitochondria-mediated apoptosis was activated by excessive Mo and inhibited by Mo + Cd, but Cd exposure alone had little effect on it. Collectively, our research confirmed that Mo and/or Cd evoked necroptosis via NF-κB/TNF-α axis, and decreased death receptor-mediated apoptosis in duck myocardium, the impacts of Mo and/or Cd on mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis were different. These results are significant for studying toxicology of Mo and/or Cd and preserving the ecosystem.

Abstract
Metabolic and toxic myelopathies usually occurs due to several different causes. Metabolic myelopathy usually occurs due to deficiency of a nutrient, such as vitamin B12. Toxic myelopathy occurs secondary to the exposure to an external toxic agent. Although they may have a difficult diagnosis, determination of the specific cause of myelopathy is of utmost importance, because many causes are amenable to treatment. Although they have many clinical, electrophysiologic, and neuropathologic similarities, imaging may aid in the suspicion of toxic or metabolic myelopathy. The aim of this article, is to review the imaging features of the main toxic and metabolic myelopathies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article reviews the etiologies, presentations, and management of neuropathies related to nutritional deficiencies. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS Peripheral neuropathy can be the predominant or only manifestation of certain nutrient deficiencies. Cognitive difficulties or involvement of other parts of the central nervous system, such as the optic nerve and spinal cord, may accompany nutritional peripheral neuropathies. In most patients, the nutritional deficiency may have a single predominant cause, but in some cases, multiple causes may coexist. Obesity, for unclear reasons, can be associated with nutrient deficiencies. The rising rates of bariatric surgery and the incidence of nutrient deficiencies following bariatric surgery make this a particularly relevant topic for neurologists. ESSENTIAL POINTS Neuropathies caused by nutrient deficiencies are preventable with appropriate supplementation in high-risk situations. Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential to ensure an optimal outcome and minimize neurologic morbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current research highlights the positive impact of nutrition therapy, particularly enteral nutrition, in critical illness. However, little attention is given to the impact of nutrition on skin integrity during critical illness. Skin integrity is at risk in critically ill children owing to necessary clinical therapies and challenges of providing nutrition therapy. METHODS We conducted a narrative literature review with three main thematic concepts to drive our literature search: the association of nutrition therapy with (1) skin integrity; (2) injury, wounds, and wound healing; and (3) differences of skin color. Using pertinent search and subject terms, PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases were searched, yielding 316 articles. After removal of duplicates, articles were reviewed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria defined by the authors; only eight articles met the defined criteria to inform this review. RESULTS Large and important gaps exist in the current literature regarding an association between nutrition therapy, skin injury, and wound healing. Little to no attention was found for associations with skin color. The resulting narrative review addresses these topics and subtopics with additional references included that are independent of the original search strategy. CONCLUSIONS A dearth of evidence exists describing associations between nutrition and disruption of skin integrity in pediatric critical illness. Children with dark skin are at increased risk, as manifestation and identification of disruption to skin integrity may not be recognized. Research is needed to describe these associations and the impact of nutrition on skin integrity, including differences of skin color.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery is increasingly used in women of childbearing age due to the rising prevalence of obesity and the effectiveness and availability of this treatment. Pregnancy in women with previous bariatric surgery deserves special attention. Weight loss induced by surgery reduces the risks that obesity poses to pregnancy. But on the other hand, decreased intake and malabsorption may increase the risk of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency and negatively affect maternal and foetal health. The aim of this narrative review is to provide an updated analysis of the impact of different bariatric surgery techniques on mineral and micronutrient nutritional status during pregnancy and the possible effect on maternal-foetal health.

Abstract
Secondary demyelinating diseases comprise a wide spectrum group of pathological conditions and may either be attributed to a disorder primarily affecting the neurons or axons, followed by demyelination, or to an underlying condition leading to secondary damage of the myelin sheath. In the elderly, primary demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), such as multiple sclerosis, are relatively uncommon. However, secondary causes of CNS demyelination may often occur and in this case, extensive diagnostic workup is usually needed. Infectious, postinfectious, or postvaccinal demyelination may be observed, attributed to age-related alterations of the immune system in this population. Osmotic disturbances and nutritional deficiencies, more commonly observed in the elderly, may lead to conditions such as pontine/extrapontine myelinolysis, Wernicke encephalopathy, and demyelination of the posterior columns of the spinal cord. The prevalence of malignancies is higher in the elderly, sometimes leading to radiation-induced, immunotherapy-related, or paraneoplastic CNS demyelination. This review intends to aid clinical neurologists in broadening their diagnostic approach to secondary CNS demyelinating diseases in the elderly. Common clinical conditions leading to secondary demyelination and their clinical manifestations are summarized here, while the current knowledge of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms is additionally presented.

Abstract
Copper and zinc are micronutrients that play a crucial role in many cellular pathways, act as cofactors in enzymatic systems, and hence, modulate enzyme activity. The regulation of these elements in homeostasis is precisely controlled by various mechanisms. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme requiring both copper and zinc for proper functioning. Additionally, there is an interaction between the concentrations of copper and zinc. Dietary ingestion of large amounts of zinc augments intestinal absorption of this trace element, resulting in copper deficiency secondary to zinc excess. The presence of an overabundance of copper and zinc has a detrimental impact on the cardiovascular system; however, the impact on vascular contractility varies. Copper plays a role in the modulation of vascular remodeling in the cardiac tissue, and the phenomenon of cuproptosis has been linked to the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease. The presence of copper has an observable effect on the vasorelaxation mediated by nitric oxide. The maintenance of proper levels of zinc within an organism influences SOD and is essential in the pathogenesis of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Recently, the effects of metal nanoparticles have been investigated due to their unique characteristics. On the other hand, dietary introduction of metal nanoparticles may result in vascular dysfunction, oxidative stress, and cellular DNA damage. Copper and zinc intake affect cardiovascular function, but more research is needed.

Abstract
Personalization of ICU nutrition is essential to future of critical care. Recommendations from American/European guidelines and practice suggestions incorporating recent literature are presented. Low-dose enteral nutrition (EN) or parenteral nutrition (PN) can be started within 48 h of admission. While EN is preferred route of delivery, new data highlight PN can be given safely without increased risk; thus, when early EN is not feasible, provision of isocaloric PN is effective and results in similar outcomes. Indirect calorimetry (IC) measurement of energy expenditure (EE) is recommended by both European/American guidelines after stabilization post-ICU admission. Below-measured EE (~ 70%) targets should be used during early phase and increased to match EE later in stay. Low-dose protein delivery can be used early (~ D1-2) (< 0.8 g/kg/d) and progressed to ≥ 1.2 g/kg/d as patients stabilize, with consideration of avoiding higher protein in unstable patients and in acute kidney injury not on CRRT. Intermittent-feeding schedules hold promise for further research. Clinicians must be aware of delivered energy/protein and what percentage of targets delivered nutrition represents. Computerized nutrition monitoring systems/platforms have become widely available. In patients at risk of micronutrient/vitamin losses (i.e., CRRT), evaluation of micronutrient levels should be considered post-ICU days 5-7 with repletion of deficiencies where indicated. In future, we hope use of muscle monitors such as ultrasound, CT scan, and/or BIA will be utilized to assess nutrition risk and monitor response to nutrition. Use of specialized anabolic nutrients such as HMB, creatine, and leucine to improve strength/muscle mass is promising in other populations and deserves future study. In post-ICU setting, continued use of IC measurement and other muscle measures should be considered to guide nutrition. Research on using rehabilitation interventions such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to guide post-ICU exercise/rehabilitation prescription and using anabolic agents such as testosterone/oxandrolone to promote post-ICU recovery is needed.

Abstract
Copper deficiency can present as myelopathy by the manifestation of sensory ataxia, secondary to demyelination of the posterior cords of the spinal cord, accompanied by cytopenia, mainly anemia, and leukopenia. Case series study of three patients with myelopathy due to copper deficiency, diagnosed and managed from 2020 to 2022 in a highly complex university hospital in Colombia. Regarding gender, two cases were female patients. The age range was between 57 and 68 years. In all three cases serum copper levels were decreased, and in two of these, different causes of myelopathy affecting the posterior cords of the spinal cord were ruled out, such as vitamin B12, vitamin E and folic acid deficiency, tabes dorsalis, myelopathy due to human immunodeficiency virus, multiple sclerosis and infection by the human lymphotropic virus type I and II, among others. However, at the moment of the myelopathy diagnosis, one patient had vitamin B12 deficiency associated with copper insufficiency. All three cases presented sensory ataxia, and in two, paraparesis was the initial motor deficit. The diagnostic approach must include copper levels assessment in every case of patients with chronic gastrointestinal pathology, chronic diarrhea, malabsorption syndrome, or significant reduction in dietary intake; and the development of neurological symptoms that may suggest cord involvement. It has been reported that a delay in diagnosis can lead to poor neurological outcomes.

Abstract
As an essential nutrient, copper's redox properties are both beneficial and toxic to cells. Therefore, leveraging the characteristics of copper-dependent diseases or using copper toxicity to treat copper-sensitive diseases may offer new strategies for specific disease treatments. In particular, copper concentration is typically higher in cancer cells, making copper a critical limiting nutrient for cancer cell growth and proliferation. Hence, intervening in copper metabolism specific to cancer cells may become a potential tumor treatment strategy, directly impacting tumor growth and metastasis. In this review, we discuss the metabolism of copper in the body and summarize research progress on the role of copper in promoting tumor cell growth or inducing programmed cell death in tumor cells. Additionally, we elucidate the role of copper-related drugs in cancer treatment, intending to provide new perspectives for cancer treatment.

Abstract
New o-hydroxyazocompound L bearing pyrrole residue was obtained in the simple synthetic protocol. The structure of L was confirmed and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. It was found that new chemosensor can be successfully used as copper(II) selective spectrophotometric regent in solution and can be also applied for the preparation of sensing materials generating selective color signal upon interaction with copper(II). Selective colorimetric response towards copper(II) is manifested by a distinct color change from yellow to pink. Proposed systems were effectively used for copper(II) determination at concentration level 10-8 M in model and real samples of water.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS A relationship exists between dietary copper intake and hypertriglyceridemia in the United States (US). However, children and adolescents have there is limited research data for children and adolescents, who have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to carefully evaluate this relationship. METHODS AND RESULTS This cross-sectional study included 3982 children and adolescents who participated in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2006. The outcome variable was hypertriglyceridemia, defined as a triglyceride (TG) concentration >150 mg/dL. Multivariate and binary logistic regression models were applied in this study. The median (Q1-Q3) copper intake and TG levels were 0.98 (0.71-1.32) mg/d and 72.00 (53.00-100.00) mg/dL, respectively. The smoothing curve showed an inverted L-shaped relationship between copper intake and the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia in American children and adolescents. A binary logistic regression model was developed to evaluate the relationship between copper intake and the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, and the inflection point was 0.76 mg/d. The odds of developing hypertriglyceridemia significantly increased with increasing levels of copper intake (odds ratio (OR), 2.00; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.39-2.86) in participants with copper intake >0.76 mg/d (P for log likelihood ratio test = 0.032). The association between high copper intake and increased hypertriglyceridemia risk was significantly stronger in participants with a high body mass index (BMI; ≥23 kg/m2) (OR: 2.09; 95% CI: 1.42-3.07) than in those with a low BMI (tertile 1-2) (p for interaction = 0.048). Moreover, the increase in copper intake in adolescents aged 13-18 years significantly increased the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.38-2.76; p for interaction = 0.001). CONCLUSION Higher dietary copper intake increases the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, especially among US adolescents with a BMI ≥23 kg/m2.

Abstract
Cryptocaryon irritans is one of the most harmful marine parasites in mariculture. Copper sulphate is often used to kill parasites and the influence of copper sulphate on the tomont stage of C. irritans was explored in this study. The results showed that excystment rate was not significantly affected when tomonts were exposed to 5 mg/L (76.7%) and 10 mg/L (78.9%) of copper sulphate for 3 h. However, excystment rate was significantly inhibited when exposed to 15 mg/L (33.3%) for 3 h and 5 mg/L (28.9%), 10 mg/L (33.3%) and 15 mg/L (33.3%) for 6 h. After treatment with high concentrations of copper sulphate, the interior of the tomonts was fuzzy under the microscope, and the division process could not be observed. Metabolomic results combined with preliminary transcriptome analysis results showed that the tomonts were induced to produce linoleate, riboflavin, inositol and other substances under the stress of Cu2+ , which affected the antioxidant mechanism of the body. Using MDA content determination and antioxidant enzyme activity analysis, copper sulphate was found to cause oxidative damage to tomonts by affecting the generation of metabolites, leading to the death of tomonts.

Abstract
A novel fluorescence chemical sensor-based probe 1-{[(E)-(2-aminophenyl)azanylidene]methyl}naphthalen-2-ol (AMN) was designed and synthesized, which performed a "naked eye" detection ability toward Cu2+ and Co2+ based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence strategy. It has sensitive detection ability for Cu2+ and Co2+. In addition, the color changed from yellow-green to orange under the sunlight, realizing the rapid identification of Cu2+/Co2+, which has the potential of on-site visual detection under the "naked eye". Moreover, different "on" and "off" fluorescence expressions were exhibited under excessive glutathione (GSH) in AMN-Cu2+ and AMN-Co2+ systems, which could be employed to distinguish Cu2+ from Co2+. The detection limits for Cu2+ and Co2+ were measured to be 8.29 × 10-8 M and 9.13 × 10-8 M, respectively. The binding mode of AMN was calculated to be 2:1 by Jobs' plot method analysis. Ultimately, the new fluorescence sensor was applied to detect Cu2+ and Co2+ in real samples (tap water, river water, and yellow croaker), and the results were satisfying. Therefore, this high-efficiency bifunctional chemical sensor platform based on "on-off" fluorescence detection will provide significant guidance for the advance development of single-molecule sensors for multi-ion detection.

Abstract
Copper ions play a crucial role in the progression of cancers. Tumor tissue is rich in copper ions, and copper chelators could potentially scavenge these copper ions and thus exert an antitumor effect. In this study, we report the synthesis of a novel thieno[3,2-c]pyridine compound we have called "JYFY-001" that can act as the copper chelator thanks to the inclusion of an N-(pyridin-2-yl)acetamide moiety that targets copper ions. JYFY-001 potently inhibited cancer proliferation, inducing cell apoptosis and impairing the extracellular acidification rate and oxygen consumption rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. JYFY-001 also inhibited the growth of a CRC-transplanted tumor in a dose-dependent manner, inducing apoptosis of the tumor cells and promoting the infiltration of lymphocytes in the CRC-transplanted tumor tissues. JYFY-001 also enhanced the antitumor effects of the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor. The relatively benign nature of JYFY-001 was demonstrated by the effect on normal cell viability and acute toxicity tests in mice. Our findings suggest that JYFY-001 is a prospective copper chelator to be used as a targeted drug and a synergist of immunotherapy for CRC treatments.

Abstract
Copper deficiency is an acquired condition that can lead to neurologic dysfunctions, such as myelopathy, motor neuron impairment, polyneuropathy, cognitive impairment, and optic nerve neuropathy. Associated biological findings are low serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels with low copper urinary excretion. We report the case of a previously healthy 59-year-old man who presented a complex neurological picture starting with symptoms and radiological signs consistent with degenerative myelopathy in the presence of persisting low serum copper and ceruloplasmin despite oral and intravenous copper supplementation. Over time, his symptoms evolved into a motor neuron disease evocating an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) phenotype. The potential role of copper deficiency is discussed, together with the difficulties in biomonitoring copper supplementation.

Abstract
Introduction: Menkes disease is an X-linked recessive condition caused by mutations in the ATP7A gene, which leads to severe copper deficiency. Aminoacylase-1 deficiency is a rare inborn error of metabolism caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous variant in the ACY1 gene, characterized by increased urinary excretion of specific N-acetyl amino acids. Case presentation: We report an infant with neurological findings such as seizures, neurodevelopmental delay and hypotonia. Metabolic screening showed low serum copper and ceruloplasmin, and increased urinary excretion of several N-acetylated amino acids. Whole-exome sequencing analysis (WES) revealed the novel de novo variant c.3642_3649dup (p.Ala1217Aspfs*2) in the ATP7A gene, leading to a diagnosis of Menkes disease, and the simultaneous presence of the homozygous ACY1 variant c.1057C>T (p.Arg353Cys) causative of Aminoacylase-1 deficiency. Conclusion: Our patient had two rare conditions with different treatment courses but overlapping clinical features. The identified novel ATP7A mutation associated with Menkes disease expands the ATP7A gene spectrum.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Copper is increasingly being recognized as a vital mineral required by both animals and humans. It plays a vital role in many metabolic processes such as cellular respiration, iron oxidation, and hemoglobin synthesis. Copper deficiency, which can be hereditary or acquired, can lead to a wide spectrum of disease processes such as ringed sideroblastic anemia, myelodysplasia, and pancytopenia. Timely identification and management of copper deficiency is necessary to prevent irreversible complications. AREAS COVERED Our study focuses on prevalence, etiology, pathophysiology, complications, and treatment of copper deficiency. EXPERT OPINION Copper deficiency is frequently underrecognized as the cause of anemia, neutropenia, and bone marrow dysplasia. As it is potentially treatable, it should always be kept in the differentials when patients present with neurological and hematological abnormalities.

Abstract
Epidemiological evidence on the relationship between copper (Cu) and kidney function is rare, and few studies examine the sex differences in this association. We aimed to explore the overall and sex-based relationship between exposure to Cu and biomarkers of kidney function among 4331 participants of the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multiple linear regression models were fitted to examine the overall and sex-specific associations between serum Cu and the kidney function indicator-estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR). Restricted cubic spline models (RCS) stratified by sex were performed to explore the sex-based dose-response associations. Serum Cu in the highest quartile was associated with higher levels of UACR (β = 0.203, 95% CI: 0.100 to 0.306) among overall participants. In males, there was an association of the highest Cu quartile with decreased eGFR (β = -0.023, 95% CI: -0.042 to -0.003) and increased UACR (β = 0.349, 95% CI: 0.171 to 0.527); serum Cu levels also demonstrated a negative nonlinear dose-response association with eGFR and a positive linear dose-response association with UACR in males, whereas females showed a marginally significant nonlinear positive association of eGFR with serum Cu levels. In conclusion, there were sex-specific and dose-response relationships between serum Cu and kidney function indicators. Further prospective and mechanistic studies are warranted.

Abstract
BackgroundCuproptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death termed as Cu-dependent cytotoxicity. However, the roles of cuproptosis-associated genes (CAGs) in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) have not been explored comprehensively.MethodsWe obtained CAGs and utilized consensus molecular clustering by “non-negative matrix factorization (NMF)” to stratify LUAD patients in TCGA (N = 511), GSE13213 (N = 117), and GSE31210 (N = 226) cohorts. The ssGSEA and CIBERSORT algorithms were used to evaluate the relative infiltration levels of immune cell types in tumor microenvironment (TME). The risk score based on CAGs was calculated to predict patients’ survival outcomes.ResultsWe identified three cuproptosis-associated clusters with different clinicopathological characteristics. We found that the cuproptosis-associated cluster with the worst survival rates exhibited a high enrichment of activated CD4/8+ T cells. In addition, we found that the cuproptosis-associated risk score could be used for patients’ prognosis prediction and provide new insights in immunotherapy of LUAD patients. Eventually, we constructed a nomogram-integrated cuproptosis-associated risk score with clinicopathological factors to predict overall survival in LUAD patients, with 1-, 3-, and 5-year area under curves (AUCs) being 0.771, 0.754, and 0.722, respectively, all of which were higher than those of the TNM stage.ConclusionsIn this study, we uncovered the biological function of CAGs in the TME and its correlations with clinicopathological parameters and patients’ prognosis in LUAD. These findings could provide new angles for immunotherapy of LUAD patients.

Abstract
Large amounts of enriched cadmium (Cd) in the environment seriously threatens the healthy and sustainable development of the aquaculture industry and greatly restricts the development of the food processing industry. Studying the distribution and toxic effects of Cd in fish, as well as the possible toxic effects of Cd on the human body, is very significant. A large number of studies have shown that the accumulation and distribution of Cd in fish are biologically specific, cause tissue differences, and seriously damage the integrity of tissue structure and function, the antioxidant defense system, the reproductive regulation system, and the immune system. The physiological, biochemical, enzyme, molecular, and gene expression levels change with different concentrations and times of Cd exposure, and these changes are closely related to the target sites of Cd action and tissues in fish. Therefore, the toxic effects of Cd on fish occur with multiple tissues, systems, and levels.

Abstract
Although copper plays a pivotal role in numerous physiological processes, its deficiency is virtually indistinguishable from subacute combined degeneration due to cobalamin deficiency. Moreover, the co-occurrence of deficiencies in other micronutrients and vitamins is common, making the diagnosis even more challenging. Here, we describe a case of copper deficiency in a 50-year-old woman who presented with altered mental status and bilateral upper and lower extremity weakness, numbness, and paresthesia. She was treated for cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy secondary to hepatic injury. While her mental symptoms improved, her physical symptoms continued to worsen, and she was transferred for further evaluation. The neurologic examination was positive for sensory neuropathy including decreased vibration/proprioception and ataxia in arms and legs; complete blood count showed pancytopenia; but infectious workup, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, autoimmune studies, and brain/spine magnetic resonance imaging were normal. A nerve conduction study showed generalized, axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Micronutrient/trace element deficiency was suspected in the setting of gastric bypass surgery, and supplementation was successfully initiated. Though uncommon, clinical copper deficiency is increasingly frequently recognized in the inpatient setting, and permanent neurological damage can occur prior to diagnosis and treatment. Physicians should have an elevated clinical suspicion of copper deficiency in cases of polyneuropathy and pancytopenia in patients with a history of bariatric surgery.
