Ordered 2D colloidal photonic crystals on gold substrates by surfactant-assisted fast-rate dip coating

Opto-Thermal-Tension Mediated Precision Large-Scale Particle Manipulation and Flexible Patterning

Large-scale particle manipulation with single-particle precision and further flexible patterning into functional structures is of huge potentials in many fields including bio-optoelectronic sensing, colloidal lithography, and wearable devices. However, it is very challenging for the precision manipulation and flexible patterning of particles on complicated curved and functional substrates. In this work, opto-thermal-tension (OTT) mediated precision large-scale particle manipulation and flexible patterning based on soap film are reported. Flexible manipulation and subsequent patterning of particles with single-particle resolution is realized by optothermal regulated surface tension on soap films. Reconfigurable patterning of particle structures with different shapes as well as large-scale ordered structures (up to 2000 particles) with particle sizes spanning two orders of magnitude (0.5-20 µm) is realized using this OTT mediation method. Importantly, due to the high flexibility of soap films, the patterned large-scale particle structures can be non-destructively transferred to curved and rough substrates, including rough iron pipe surface, leaf and skin surface. This OTT mediated method provides a new method for precision large-scale particle manipulation and flexible patterning with high versatility on complicated functional substrates, with great potentials for optoelectronic and biophotonic sensing and wearable device design on different curved and rough functional substrates.

Ultrafast Solid-State Electrochemical Imprinting Utilizing Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Stamps for Static/Dynamic Structural Coloration and Letter Encryption

Micro and nanopatterned surfaces hold potential for various applications, such as wettability control, antibiofouling, and optical components. However, conventional patterning processes are characterized by complexity, high costs, and environmental burdens because of the use of resists. Therefore, this paper proposes facile and ultrafast electrochemical imprinting employing a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) stamp for achieving micro and nanoscale patterning on Si surfaces. The solid-state electrochemical process efficiently generates oxide and hydrated oxide (Si-OH) patterns within several seconds at room temperature in a dry ambient environment. The formed oxide pattern can be employed as an etching mask to prepare diffraction gratings with diverse high-resolution (≈100 nm) patterns utilizing the dry PEM stamp. The resulting oxide pattern on the Si surface exhibits instantaneous structural coloration upon exposure to humid air, attributable to the formation of a water microdroplet array on the oxide pattern. The oxide pattern is successfully applied for dynamic diffraction grating and letter encryption. The proposed solid-state electrochemical oxidation scheme based on a PEM stamp, which eliminates the need for liquid electrolyte and resist, represents a simple and ultrafast process with a time cost of a few seconds, characterized by low processing costs and environmental impact.

Rapid Fabrication of High-Resolution Flexible Electronics via Nanoparticle Self-Assembly and Transfer Printing

Printed electronic technology serves as a key component in flexible electronics and wearable devices, yet achieving compatibility with both high resolution and high efficiency remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a rapid fabrication method of high-resolution nanoparticle microelectronics via self-assembly and transfer printing. The tension gradient-electrostatic attraction composite-induced nanoparticle self-assembly strategy is constructed, which can significantly enhance the self-assembly efficiency, stability, and coverage by leveraging the meniscus Marangoni effect and the electric double-layer effect. The close-packed nanoparticle self-assembly layer can be rapidly formed on microstructure surfaces over a large area. Inspired by ink printing, a transfer printing strategy is further proposed to transform the self-assembly layer into conformal micropatterns. Large-area, high-resolution (2 μm), and ultrathin (1 μm) nanoparticle microelectronics can be stably fabricated, yielding a significant improvement over fluid printing methods. The unique deformability, recoverability, and scalability of nanoparticle microelectronics are revealed, providing promising opportunities for various academic and real applications.

2D superlattices via interfacial self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au nanoparticles

Nanoparticle (NP) superlattices are periodic arrays of nanoscale building blocks. Because of the collective effect between functional NPs, NP superlattices can exhibit exciting new properties that are distinct from those of individual NPs or corresponding bulk materials. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) NP superlattices have attracted increasing attention due to their emerging applications in micro/opto-electronics, catalysis, sensing, and other fields. Among various preparation methods, evaporation-induced interfacial self-assembly has become the most popular method for preparing 2D NP superlattices because it is a simple, low-cost, and scalable process that can be widely applied to various NPs. Introducing soft ligands, such as polymers, can not only provide convenience in controlling the self-assembly process and tuning superlattice structures but also improve the properties of 2D NP superlattices. This feature article focuses on the methods of evaporation-induced self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au NPs into free-standing 2D NP superlattice films at air/liquid interfaces and 2D NP superlattice coatings on substrates, followed by studies on in situ tracking of the self-assembly evolution process through small-angle X-ray scattering. Their application in nano-floating gate memory devices is also included. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of this direction are discussed.

Effective Approach for Fabricating Highly Precise High-Curvature Structural Patterns via Air-Bubble Induction

Developing a new master mold-based patterning technology that can be used to accurately, precisely, and uniformly create large-area micropatterns while controlling the micropatterns of curved structures is essential for promoting innovative developments in various application fields. This study develops a new top-down lithographic process that can effectively produce structural patterns with high curvatures by growing isolated microbubbles in the master pattern holes. The isolated air-pocket lithography (IAL) we developed is based on the controlled behavior of micrometer-sized air pockets trapped between the grooves of the master pattern and the curable polymer. We successfully fabricated a concave array polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film and a convex array polymer film. In addition, the IAL mechanism was proven by confirming the expansion process of micrometer-sized air pockets trapped between the deep groove of the silicon master pattern and the PDMS coating film by using optical microscopy images. We successfully obtained complex three-dimensional structural patterns containing both 3D hollow spherical concave and ring-shaped two-dimensional convex patterns. This simple, fast, and effective high-curvature patterning technique is expected to provide innovative solutions for future applications such as nanoelectronics, optical devices, displays, and photovoltaics.

From Self-Assembly of Colloidal Crystals toward Ordered Porous Layer Interferometry

Interferometry-based, reflectometric, label-free biosensors have made significant progress in the analysis of molecular interactions after years of development. The design of interference substrates is a key research topic for these biosensors, and many studies have focused on porous films prepared by top-down methods such as porous silicon and anodic aluminum oxide. Lately, more research has been conducted on ordered porous layer interferometry (OPLI), which uses ordered porous colloidal crystal films as interference substrates. These films are made using self-assembly techniques, which is the bottom-up approach. They also offer several advantages for biosensing applications, such as budget cost, adjustable porosity, and high structural consistency. This review will briefly explain the fundamental components of self-assembled materials and thoroughly discuss various self-assembly techniques in depth. We will also summarize the latest studies that used the OPLI technique for label-free biosensing applications and divide them into several aspects for further discussion. Then, we will comprehensively evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of self-assembly techniques and discuss possible future research directions. Finally, we will outlook the upcoming challenges and opportunities for label-free biosensing using the OPLI technique.

Photonic crystals with rainbow colors by centrifugation-assisted assembly of colloidal lignin nanoparticles

Photonic crystals are optical materials that are often fabricated by assembly of particles into periodically arranged structures. However, assembly of lignin nanoparticles has been limited due to lacking methods and incomplete understanding of the interparticle forces and packing mechanisms. Here we show a centrifugation-assisted fabrication of photonic crystals with rainbow structural colors emitted from the structure covering the entire visible spectrum. Our results show that centrifugation is crucial for the formation of lignin photonic crystals, because assembly of lignin nanoparticles without centrifugation assistance leads to the formation of stripe patterns rather than photonic crystals. We further prove that the functions of centrifugation are to classify lignin nanoparticles according to their particle size and produce monodispersed particle layers that display gradient colors from red to violet. The different layers of lignin nanoparticles were assembled in a way that created semi-closed packing structures, which gave rise to coherent scattering. The diameter of the lignin nanoparticles in each color layer is smaller than that predicted by a modified Bragg's equation. In situ optical microscope images provided additional evidence on the importance of dynamic rearrangement of lignin nanoparticles during their assembly into semi-closed packing structures. The preparation of lignin nanoparticles combined with the methodology for their classification and assembly pave the way for sustainable photonic crystals.

Controlling disorder in self-assembled colloidal monolayers via evaporative processes

Monolayers of assembled nano-objects with a controlled degree of disorder hold interest in many optical applications, including photovoltaics, light emission, sensing, and structural coloration. Controlled disorder can be achieved through either top-down or bottom-up approaches, but the latter is more suited to large-scale, low-cost fabrication. Disordered colloidal monolayers can be assembled through evaporatively driven convective assembly, a bottom-up process with a wide range of parameters impacting particle placement. Motivated by the photonic applications of such monolayers, in this review we discuss the quantification of monolayer disorder, and the assembly methods that have been used to produce them. We review the impact of particle and solvent properties, as well as the use of substrate patterning, to create the desired spatial distributions of particles.

Self-Assembly of 2D Nematic and Random Arrays of Sterically Stabilized Nanoscale Rods with and without Evaporation

The adequate manipulation of nanometer-scale building blocks using dispersion systems is regarded as a fundamental technique to fabricate elaborate microstructures. Although a liquid flow with evaporation is generally regarded as an essential factor for the self-assembly of floating blocks, experimental evidence has not been sufficient to clarify the importance of the flow in the dispersion systems. In the present study, 2D nematic layers of sterically stabilized nanoscale calcite rods were achieved in a millimeter-scale region on a solid substrate via the very slow recession of an organic dispersion with evaporation. 2D random arrays of the nanorods were obtained via recession of the liquid in the same system without evaporation. When the nanorods were not sterically stabilized, 3D random arrays were formed even with evaporation. We demonstrated that the evaporation-driven flow of sterically stabilized nanorods to a confined space at the air-liquid-solid interface is essential for the formation of 2D nematic structures on a substrate.

Photonic crystal based biosensors: Emerging inverse opals for biomarker detection

Photonic crystal (PC)-based inverse opal (IO) arrays are one of the substrates for label-free sensing mechanism. IO-based materials with their advanced and ordered three-dimensional microporous structures have recently found attractive optical sensor and biological applications in the detection of biomolecules like proteins, DNA, viruses, etc. The unique optical and structural properties of IO materials can simplify the improvements in non-destructive optical study capabilities for point of care testing (POCT) used within a wide variety of biosensor research. In this review, which is an interdisciplinary investigation among nanotechnology, biology, chemistry and medical sciences, the recent fabrication methodologies and the main challenges regarding the application of (inverse opals) IOs in terms of their bio-sensing capability are summarized.

Recent advances in self-assemblies and sensing applications of colloidal photonic crystals

Colloidal photonic crystals (PCs), consisting of highly ordered monodisperse nanoparticles, have been carried out a great deal of research in recent decades due to the attributes of readable signal, easy modification and low cost. With these unique features, colloidal PCs have also gradually become a focus of candidates applied in sensing fields. In this review, an overview of recent advances in colloidal PCs including self-assemblies and sensing applications is illustrated. With respect to the development in self-assemblies of colloidal PCs, the review concentrates on the summary of responsive mechanisms, detection methods, responsive materials, unit cells and fabrication methods. In terms of advances in sensing application of colloidal PCs, various types of sensors are summarized based on the kinds and applications of target analytes. Furthermore, the current limitations and potential future directions of colloidal PCs in self-assemblies and sensing areas are also discussed.

Designing Structural-Color Patterns Composed of Colloidal Arrays

Structural coloration provides a great potential for various applications due to unique optical properties distinguished from conventional pigment colors. Structural colors are nonfading, iridescent, and tunable, which is difficult to achieve with pigments. In addition, structural color is potentially less toxic than pigments. However, it is challenging to develop structural colors because elaborate nanostructures are a prerequisite for the coloration. Furthermore, it is highly suggested the nanostructures be patterned at various length scales on a large area to provide practical formats. There have been intensive studies to develop pragmatic methods for producing structural-color patterns in a controlled manner using either colloidal crystals or glasses. This article reviews the current state of the art in the structural-color patterning based on the colloidal arrays. We first discuss common and different features between colloidal crystals and glasses. We then categorize colloidal arrays into six distinct structures of 3D opals, inverse opals, non-close-packed arrays, 2D colloidal crystals, 1D colloidal strings, and 3D amorphous arrays and study various methods to make them patterned from recent key contributions. Finally, we outline the current challenges and future perspectives of the structural-color patterns.

A Facile, Low-Cost Plasma Etching Method for Achieving Size Controlled Non-Close-Packed Monolayer Arrays of Polystyrene Nano-Spheres

Monolayer nano-sphere arrays attract great research interest as they can be used as templates to fabricate various nano-structures. Plasma etching, and in particular high-frequency plasma etching, is the most commonly used method to obtain non-close-packed monolayer arrays. However, the method is still limited in terms of cost and efficiency. In this study, we demonstrate that a low frequency (40 kHz) plasma etching system can be used to fabricate non-close-packed monolayer arrays of polystyrene (PS) nano-spheres with smooth surfaces and that the etching rate is nearly doubled compared to that of the high-frequency systems. The study reveals that the low-frequency plasma etching process is dominated by a thermal evaporation etching mechanism, which is different from the atom-scale dissociation mechanism that underlines the high-frequency plasma etching. It is found that the polystyrene nano-sphere size can be precisely controlled by either adjusting the etching time or power. Through introducing oxygen as the assisting gas in the low frequency plasma etching system, we achieved a coalesced polystyrene nano-sphere array and used it as a template for metal-assisted chemical etching. We demonstrate that the method can significantly improve the aspect ratio of the silicon nanowires to over 200 due to the improved flexure rigidity.

A Facile Interfacial Self-Assembly of Crystalline Colloidal Monolayers by Tension Gradient

Many self-assembly approaches of colloidal monolayers have flourished but with some shortages, such as complexity, time-consumption, parameter sensitivity, and high-cost. This paper presents a facile, rapid, well-controlled, and low-cost method to prepare monolayers by directly adding silica particle suspensions containing water and ethanol to different liquids. A detailed analysis of the self-assembly process was conducted. The particles dove into water firstly, then moved up under the effect of the buoyancy and the tension gradient. The tension gradient induced the Marangoni convection and the relative motion between the water and the particles. At last, the particles were adsorbed at the air-water interface to minimize the free energy. The quality of the monolayers depended on the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfonate or ethanol in the water subphase. An interfacial polymerization of ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate was used to determine the contact angles of the particles at different subphase surfaces. The value of the detachment energy was positively associated with the contact angle and the surface tension. When the detachment energy decreased to a certain value, some particles detached from the surface, leading to the formation of a quasi-double layer. We also observed that the content of ethanol in suspensions influenced the arrangement of particles.

Photoelectrodes based on 2D opals assembled from Cu-delafossite double-shelled microspheres for an enhanced photoelectrochemical response

Although a unique light-harvesting property was recently demonstrated in a photocathode based on 2-dimensional (2D) opals of CuFeO₂-shelled SiO₂ microspheres, the performance of a monolayer of ultra-thin CuFeO₂-shelled microspheres is limited by ineffective charge separation. Herein, we propose an innovative design rule, in which an inner CuFeO₂/outer CuAlO₂ double-shelled heterojunction is formed on each partially etched microsphere to obtain a hexagonally assembled 2D opal photoelectrode. Our Cu-delafossite double-shelled photocathode shows a dramatically improved charge separation capability, with a 9-fold increase in the photocurrent compared to that of the single-shelled counterpart. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy clearly confirms the reduced charge transport/transfer resistance associated with the Cu-delafossite double-shelled photocathode, while surface photovoltage spectra reveal enhanced polarization of the photogenerated carrier, indicating improved charge separation capability with the aid of the heterojunction. Our finding sheds light on the importance of heterojunction interfaces in achieving optimal charge separation in opal architectures as well as the inner-shell/electrolyte interface to expedite charge separation/transport.

Heterogeneous Nucleation of Colloidal Crystals on a Glass Substrate with Depletion Attraction

The heterogeneous nucleation of colloidal crystals with attractive interactions has been investigated via in situ observations. We have found two types of nucleation processes: a cluster that overcomes the critical size for nucleation with a monolayer, and a method that occurs with two layers. The Gibbs free energy changes (ΔG) for these two types of nucleation processes are evaluated by taking into account the effect of various interfacial energies. In contrast to homogeneous nucleation, the change in interfacial free energy, Δσ, is generated for colloidal nucleation on a foreign substrate such as a cover glass in the present study. The Δσ and step free energy of the first layer, γ₁, are obtained experimentally based on the equation deduced from classical nucleation theory (CNT). It is concluded that the ΔG of q-2D nuclei is smaller than of monolayer nuclei, provided that the same number of particles are used, which explains the experimental result that the critical size in q-2D nuclei is smaller than that in monolayer nuclei.

Approaches to self-assembly of colloidal monolayers: A guide for nanotechnologists

Self-assembly of quasi-spherical colloidal particles in two-dimensional (2D) arrangements is essential for a wide range of applications from optoelectronics to surface engineering, from chemical and biological sensing to light harvesting and environmental remediation. Several self-assembly approaches have flourished throughout the years, with specific features in terms of complexity of the implementation, sensitivity to process parameters, characteristics of the final colloidal assembly. Selecting the proper method for a given application amidst the vast literature in this field can be a challenging task. In this review, we present an extensive classification and comparison of the different techniques adopted for 2D self-assembly in order to provide useful guidelines for scientists approaching this field. After an overview of the main applications of 2D colloidal assemblies, we describe the main mechanisms underlying their formation and introduce the mathematical tools commonly used to analyse their final morphology. Subsequently, we examine in detail each class of self-assembly techniques, with an explanation of the physical processes intervening in crystallization and a thorough investigation of the technical peculiarities of the different practical implementations. We point out the specific characteristics of the set-ups and apparatuses developed for self-assembly in terms of complexity, requirements, reproducibility, robustness, sensitivity to process parameters and morphology of the final colloidal pattern. Such an analysis will help the reader to individuate more easily the approach more suitable for a given application and will draw the attention towards the importance of the details of each implementation for the final results.

Enhanced Photocurrent of Transparent CuFeO2 Photocathodes by Self-Light-Harvesting Architecture

Efficient sunlight-driven water-splitting devices can be achieved by using an optically and energetically well-matched pair of photoelectrodes in a tandem configuration. The key for maximizing the photoelectrochemical efficiency is the use of a highly transparent front photoelectrode with a band gap below 2.0 eV. Herein, we propose two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) structures consisting of a CuFeO₂-decorated microsphere monolayer, which serve as self-light-harvesting architectures allowing for amplified light absorption and high transparency. The photocurrent densities are evaluated for three CuFeO₂ 2D PC-based photoelectrodes with microspheres of different sizes. The optical analysis confirmed the presence of a photonic stop band that generates slow light and at the same time amplifies the absorption of light. The 410 nm sized CuFeO₂-decorated microsphere 2D PC photocathode shows an exceptionally high visible light transmittance of 76.4% and a relatively high photocurrent of 0.2 mA cm^-2 at 0.6 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode. The effect of the microsphere size on the carrier collection efficiency was analyzed by in situ conductive atomic force microscopy observation under illumination. Our novel synthetic method to produce self-light-harvesting nanostructures provides a promising approach for the effective use of solar energy by highly transparent photocathodes.

Color-Coded Batteries - Electro-Photonic Inverse Opal Materials for Enhanced Electrochemical Energy Storage and Optically Encoded Diagnostics

For consumer electronic devices, long-life, stable, and reasonably fast charging Li-ion batteries with good stable capacities are a necessity. For exciting and important advances in the materials that drive innovations in electrochemical energy storage (EES), modular thin-film solar cells, and wearable, flexible technology of the future, real-time analysis and indication of battery performance and health is crucial. Here, developments in color-coded assessment of battery material performance and diagnostics are described, and a vision for using electro-photonic inverse opal materials and all-optical probes to assess, characterize, and monitor the processes non-destructively in real time are outlined. By structuring any cathode or anode material in the form of a photonic crystal or as a 3D macroporous inverse opal, color-coded "chameleon" battery-strip electrodes may provide an amenable way to distinguish the type of process, the voltage, material and chemical phase changes, remaining capacity, cycle health, and state of charge or discharge of either existing or new materials in Li-ion or emerging alternative battery types, simply by monitoring its color change.

Temperature-Controlled Diffusion in PNIPAM-Modified Silica Inverse Opals

We report a new strategy for the preparation of well-defined and mechanically stable porous nanostructures with tunable porosity. Silica inverse opals, which are known as a model system for a porous periodic nanostructure, were grafted with brushes of the thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) grown via atom transfer radical polymerization. By tuning the temperature, the swelling state of the brush layer is reversibly altered, and with this we were able to control the overall porosity of the system and, thus, the mobility of small penetrants. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, a method combining single molecule sensitivity with small probing volume (<1 μm³), was used to directly monitor and quantify in situ the changes in the penetrants' mobility.

2D and 3D photonic crystal materials for photocatalysis and electrochemical energy storage and conversion

This perspective reviews recent advances in inverse opal structures, how they have been developed, studied and applied as catalysts, catalyst support materials, as electrode materials for batteries, water splitting applications, solar-to-fuel conversion and electrochromics, and finally as photonic photocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts. Throughout, we detail some of the salient optical characteristics that underpin recent results and form the basis for light-matter interactions that span electrochemical energy conversion systems as well as photocatalytic systems. Strategies for using 2D as well as 3D structures, ordered macroporous materials such as inverse opals are summarized and recent work on plasmonic-photonic coupling in metal nanoparticle-infiltrated wide band gap inverse opals for enhanced photoelectrochemistry are provided.
