The effect of muscle fatigue on stimulus intensity requirements for central and peripheral fatigue quantification

Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage Reduces Gross Efficiency

INTRODUCTION

The effect of eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) on cycling efficiency is unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of EIMD on gross and delta efficiency and the cardiopulmonary responses to cycle ergometry.

METHODS

Twenty-one recreational athletes performed cycling at 70%, 90%, and 110% of the gas exchange threshold (GET) under control conditions (Control) and 24 h following an eccentric damaging protocol (Damage). Knee extensor isometric maximal voluntary contraction, potentiated twitch ( Qtw,pot ), and voluntary activation were assessed before Control and Damage. Gross and delta efficiency were assessed using indirect calorimetry, and cardiopulmonary responses were measured at each power output. Electromyography root-mean-square (EMG RMS ) during cycling was also determined.

RESULTS

Maximal voluntary contraction was 25% ± 18% lower for Damage than Control ( P < 0.001). Gross efficiency was lower for Damage than Control ( P < 0.001) by 0.55% ± 0.79%, 0.59% ± 0.73%, and 0.60% ± 0.87% for 70%, 90%, and 110% GET, respectively. Delta efficiency was unchanged between conditions ( P = 0.513). Concurrently, cycling EMG RMS was higher for Damage than Control ( P = 0.004). An intensity-dependent increase in breath frequency and V̇ E /V̇CO 2 was found, which were higher for Damage only at 110% GET ( P ≤ 0.019).

CONCLUSIONS

Thus, gross efficiency is reduced following EIMD. The concurrently higher EMG RMS suggests that increases in muscle activation in the presence of EIMD might have contributed to reduced gross efficiency. The lack of change in delta efficiency might relate to its poor reliability hindering the ability to detect change. The findings also show that EIMD-associated hyperventilation is dependent on exercise intensity, which might relate to increases in central command with EIMD.

Acute neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and muscle oxygenation responses to low-intensity aerobic interval exercises with blood flow restriction

We investigated the influence of short- and long-interval cycling exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR) on neuromuscular fatigue, shear stress and muscle oxygenation, potent stimuli to BFR-training adaptations. During separate sessions, eight individuals performed short- (24 × 60 s/30 s; SI) or long-interval (12 × 120 s/60 s; LI) trials on a cycle ergometer, matched for total work. One leg exercised with (BFR-leg) and the other without (CTRL-leg) BFR. Quadriceps fatigue was quantified using pre- to post-interval changes in maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), potentiated twitch force (QT) and voluntary activation (VA). Shear rate was measured by Doppler ultrasound at cuff release post-intervals. Vastus lateralis tissue oxygenation was measured by near-infrared spectroscopy during exercise. Following the initial interval, significant (P < 0.05) declines in MVC and QT were found in both SI and LI, which were more pronounced in the BFR-leg, and accounted for approximately two-thirds of the total reduction at exercise termination. In the BFR-leg, reductions in MVC (-28 ± 15%), QT (-42 ± 17%), and VA (-15 ± 17%) were maximal at exercise termination and persisted up to 8 min post-exercise. Exercise-induced muscle deoxygenation was greater (P < 0.001) in the BFR-leg than CTRL-leg and perceived pain was more in LI than SI (P < 0.014). Cuff release triggered a significant (P < 0.001) shear rate increase which was consistent across trials. Exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue in the BFR-leg exceeded that in the CTRL-leg and was predominantly of peripheral origin. BFR also resulted in diminished muscle oxygenation and elevated shear stress. Finally, short-interval trials resulted in comparable neuromuscular and haemodynamic responses with reduced perceived pain compared to long-intervals.

Sodium bicarbonate induces alkalosis, but improves high-intensity cycling performance only when participants expect a beneficial effect: a placebo and nocebo study

The study aimed to investigate the effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) intake with divergent verbal and visual information on constant load cycling time-to-task failure, conducted within the severe intensity domain. Fifteen recreational cyclists participated in a randomized double-blind, crossover study, ingesting NaHCO3 or placebo (i.e., dextrose), but with divergent information about its likely influence (i.e., likely to induce ergogenic, inert, or harmful effects). Performance was evaluated using constant load cycling time to task failure trial at 115% of peak power output estimated during a ramp incremental exercise test. Data on blood lactate, blood acid-base balance, muscle electrical activity (EMG) through electromyography signal, and the twitch interpolation technique to assess neuromuscular indices were collected. Despite reduced peak force in the isometric maximal voluntary contraction and post-effort peripheral fatigue in all conditions (P < 0.001), neither time to task failure, EMG nor, blood acid-base balance differed between conditions (P > 0.05). Evaluation of effect sizes of all conditions suggested that informing participants that the supplement would be likely to have a positive effect (NaHCO3/Ergogenic: 0.46; 0.15-0.74; Dextrose/Ergogenic: 0.45; 0.04-0.88) resulted in improved performance compared to control. Thus, NaHCO3 ingestion consistently induced alkalosis, indicating that the physiological conditions to improve performance were present. Despite this, NaHCO3 ingestion did not influence performance or indicators of neuromuscular fatigue. In contrast, effect size estimates indicate that participants performed better when informed that they were ingesting an ergogenic supplement. These findings suggest that the apparently ergogenic effect of NaHCO3 may be due, at least in part, to a placebo effect.

Repeated sprint training in hypoxia induces specific skeletal muscle adaptations through S100A protein signaling

Athletes increasingly engage in repeated sprint training consisting in repeated short all-out efforts interspersed by short recoveries. When performed in hypoxia (RSH), it may lead to greater training effects than in normoxia (RSN); however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed at elucidating the effects of RSH on skeletal muscle metabolic adaptations as compared to RSN. Sixteen healthy young men performed nine repeated sprint training sessions in either normoxia (FIO2 = 0.209, RSN, n = 7) or normobaric hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.136, RSH, n = 9). Before and after the training period, exercise performance was assessed by using repeated sprint ability (RSA) and Wingate tests. Vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were performed to investigate muscle metabolic adaptations using proteomics combined with western blot analysis. Similar improvements were observed in RSA and Wingate tests in both RSN and RSH groups. At the muscle level, RSN and RSH reduced oxidative phosphorylation protein content but triggered an increase in mitochondrial biogenesis proteins. Proteomics showed an increase in several S100A family proteins in the RSH group, among which S100A13 most strongly. We confirmed a significant increase in S100A13 protein by western blot in RSH, which was associated with increased Akt phosphorylation and its downstream targets regulating protein synthesis. Altogether our data indicate that RSH may activate an S100A/Akt pathway to trigger specific adaptations as compared to RSN.

Mathematical modeling of exercise fatigability in the severe domain: A unifying integrative framework in isokinetic condition

Muscle fatigue is the decay in the ability of muscles to generate force, and results from neural and metabolic perturbations. This article presents an integrative mathematical model that describes the decrease in maximal force capacity (i.e. fatigue) over exercises performed at intensities above the critical force Fc (i.e. severe domain). The model unifies the previous Critical Power Model and All-Out Model and can be applied to any exercise described by a changing force F over time. Characterization of neuromuscular performances in adults with late-onset Pompe disease: A control case cross-sectional study

Adults with late-onset Pompe disease (aLOPD) are characterized by muscular contractile tissue deterioration. However, their neuromuscular performances are poorly known. We aimed to compare maximal muscle strength, activation, explosive strength and neuromuscular fatigue between aLOPD and controls. We studied 20 aLOPD and 20 matched controls. Isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) torque was obtained for the hip, knee and ankle muscles. The voluntary activation level (VAL) during knee extensor MVC was assessed using interpolated twitch technique. Explosive strength was evaluated for knee and ankle muscles through the rate of torque development (RTD) during fast contractions. Neuromuscular fatigue was measured during a 30-second contraction of knee flexors and extensors. All muscle MVC torques were significantly lower in aLOPD than controls (p <0.05). The weakest muscles were the hip extensors followed by hip abductors and abductors. Raw value of RTD was lower in aLOPD for the majority of muscles (p <0.05). No intergroup differences were reported for normalized RTD, VAL and neuromuscular fatigue (p-values> 0.05). Our study shows that maximal strength was the only neuromuscular characteristic affected in aLOPD with a proximal-distal intensity gradient. This suggests that the surviving muscle tissue of aLOPD is as functionally efficient as that of control individuals.

The Role of Contraction Mode in Determining Exercise Tolerance, Torque-Duration Relationship, and Neuromuscular Fatigue

PURPOSE

Critical torque (CT) and work done above it ( W ') are key predictors of exercise performance associated with neuromuscular fatigue. The aim of the present study was to understand the role of the metabolic cost of exercise in determining exercise tolerance, CT and W ', and the mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue.

METHODS

Twelve subjects performed four knee extension time trials (6, 8, 10, and 12 min) using eccentric, isometric, or concentric contractions (3-s on/2-s off at 90°·s -1 or 30°·s -1 ) to modulate the metabolic cost of exercise. Exercise performance was quantified by total impulse and mean torque. Critical torque and W ' were determined using the linear relationship between total impulse and contraction time. Cardiometabolic, neuromuscular, and ventilatory responses were quantified. Neuromuscular function was evaluated by maximal voluntary contraction, resting potentiated single/doublet electrical stimulations, and superimposed single electrical stimulation to quantify neuromuscular, peripheral, and central fatigue, respectively.

RESULTS

Compared with isometric exercise, total impulse (+36% ± 21%; P < 0.001), CT (+27% ± 30%; P < 0.001), and W ' (+67% ± 99%; P < 0.001) were increased during eccentric exercise, whereas total impulse (-25% ± 7%; P < 0.001), critical torque (-26% ± 15%; P < 0.001), and W ' (-18% ± 19%; P < 0.001) were reduced in concentric exercise. Conversely, the metabolic response and the degree of peripheral fatigue were reduced during eccentric exercise, whereas they were increased during concentric exercise. Critical torque was negatively associated with oxygen consumption gain ( R2 = 0.636; P < 0.001), and W ' was negatively associated with rates of neuromuscular and peripheral fatigue indices ( R2 = 0.252-0.880; P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The contraction mode influenced both CT and W ', and consequently exercise tolerance, indicating that the metabolic cost of contraction played a key role.

Effects of Training and Taper on Neuromuscular Fatigue Profile on 100-m Swimming Performance

This study aimed to investigate the effects of 6-week specific preparatory period and 2-week taper period on neuromuscular fatigue profile in 100-m front crawl swimming performance. Seventeen competitive-level young-adult swimmers performed a 100-m swimming performance at baseline and after 6-week specific preparatory followed by 2-week taper periods. Neuromuscular fatigue profile was assessed through percutaneous electrical stimuli on the femoral nerve during a maximal voluntary contraction performed before and immediately after each 100-m maximal effort. Performance improved (p=0.001) 2.24 and 3.06% after specific and taper, respectively. Potentiated peak force at post-effort condition decreased (p<0.001) 16.26% at baseline, 11.70% at specific, and 12.86% at taper period. Maximal voluntary contraction force also decreased (p<0.001) at post-effort condition by about 6.77 and 9.33% at baseline and specific period, respectively. Both variables did not present significant differences between times. No condition or time effects were observed to superimposed peak force and voluntary activation, both related to central fatigue. In conclusion, neuromuscular fatigue during 100-m swimming performance was exclusively developed by peripheral mechanisms regardless of the training period, and 2-week taper was able to prevent decreases in maximal voluntary contraction induced by 100-m maximal effort.

Peripheral muscle function during repeated changes of direction in professional soccer players

PURPOSES

To evaluate peripheral muscle function of the knee extensors during repeated changes of direction in professional soccer players by examining differences between competitive levels, periods of the season and playing positions, and to investigate the relationships between peripheral muscle function and physical activities during matches.

METHODS

Knee extensor peripheral muscle function (twitch peak torque, PT) of 593 male soccer players from 13 European professional clubs competing at 3 different levels was evaluated 4 times during the season. The main outcomes were PT_max (maximal PT, muscle contractility), MP_max (maximal metabolic power exercise intensity) and PT_dec (PT decline, muscle fatigability) obtained during intermittent runs of increasing intensity with multiple changes of direction interspersed with electrically evoked contractions. Relative total and sprint distances covered during a whole match and during short intervals were quantified from a sub-sample.

RESULTS

PT_max and MP_max were higher for first than for second division (p < 0.047; d = 0.15-0.23) and Under-19 players (p < 0.007; d = 0.17-0.25). MP_max was lower (p < 0.016; d = 0.23-0.32) and PT_dec was higher (p < 0.004; d = 0.26-0.39) in the pre-season compared to all the other time points. MP_max was higher for fullbacks than attackers and defenders (p < 0.041; d = 0.20-0.22). PT_dec was higher for defenders than fullbacks, midfielders and wings (p < 0.029; d = 0.21-0.28). PT_max was associated with whole-match relative total distance (p = 0.004; d = 0.26). PT_dec was associated with whole-match relative total distance and relative short-interval sprint distance (p < 0.050; d = 0.18-0.22).

CONCLUSION

The ability to sustain repeated change of direction efforts at high intensities while preserving peripheral muscle function should be considered an important determinant of soccer physical performance.

ANALYSIS OF INDUCED ISOMETRIC FATIGUING CONTRACTIONS IN BICEPS BRACHII MUSCLES USING MYOTONOMETRY AND SURFACE ELECTROMYOGRAPHIC MEASUREMENTS

Viscoelastic properties of skeletal muscle tissue are known to be impacted by fatiguing contractions. In this study, an attempt has been made to utilize myotonometry for analyzing the relationship between muscle viscoelasticity and contractile behaviors in a fatiguing task. For this purpose, thirteen young healthy volunteers are recruited to perform the fatiguing isometric task and the time to task failure (TTF) is recorded. Myotonometric parameters and simultaneous surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals are recorded from the Biceps Brachii muscle of the flexed arm. The correlation between myotonometric parameters and TTF is further analyzed. Cross-validation with sEMG features is also performed. Stiffness of muscle has a positive correlation with TTF in the left hand ([Formula: see text]). Damping property of the nonfatigued muscle is positively associated with the fatigue-induced changes in amplitude features of sEMG signal in the right hand ([Formula: see text]). The normalized rate of change of mean frequency of sEMG signal has a positive correlation with stiffness values in both of the hands ([Formula: see text]). Muscle viscoelasticity is demonstrated to influence the progression of fatigue, although the difference in motor control due to handedness is also found to be an important factor. The results are promising to improve the understanding of the effect of muscle mechanics in fatigue-induced task failure.

The completely recover of quadriceps muscle peripheral fatigue after running in Olympic but not in Sprint triathlon

ABSTRACTThis study compared central and peripheral fatigue development between Sprint and Olympic distance triathlon. Fifteen male triathletes performed Sprint and Olympic triathlon simulations in a randomized and counterbalanced order. Central and peripheral fatigue was evaluated from changes in voluntary activation level (VAL) and twitch responses of quadriceps muscle (Q_tw,pot), respectively. Q_tw,pot reduced from baseline to post-swimming similarly between triathlon simulations (Sprint, -17±11%; Olympic, -13±9%). In post-cycling, Q_tw,pot further declined to a similar extent between triathlon distances (Sprint, -31±15%; Olympic, -28±11%). In post-running, Q_tw,pot was fully recovered in Olympic triathlon (-4±10%), whereas there was only a partial recovery of Q_tw,pot in Sprint triathlon (-20±11%). VAL was not reduced in post-swimming, but reduction was similar between triathlon distances in post-cycling (Sprint, -10±9%; Olympic, -8±8%) and post-running (Sprint, -15±14%; Olympic, -16±8%). In Sprint triathlon, the swimming speed (1.07±0.13 m ·s^-1) was above (p<.001) critical speed (1.01±0.14 m ·s^-1), the cycling power (179.7±27.2W) was below the respiratory compensation point (216.3±27.8W, p<.001) and running speed (13.7±1.05km·h^-1) similar to the respiratory compensation point (13.2±0.70 km·h^-1, p=.124). In Olympic triathlon, swimming speed (1.03±0.13m·s^-1) was similar to critical speed (p=.392), and both cycling power (165.3±27.3W) and running speed (12.6±1.05km·h^-1) were below the respiratory compensation point (p≤.007). In conclusion, peripheral fatigue progressed until post-cycling regardless of triathlon distances. However, peripheral fatigue was fully recovered after running in Olympic but not in Sprint triathlon. The central fatigue started in post-cycling and progressed until post-running regardless of triathlon distances.

Three Simulated Goalball Games in the Same Day Cause Central Fatigue and Can Impair Game Technical Performance

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three simulated goalball games on neuromuscular, physiological, perceptual, and technical parameters. Ten male players underwent assessments before and immediately after each game. Heart rate was recorded at rest and during all games that were entirely filmed for further technical performance analysis. Exercise significantly decreased knee extensor muscles peak force and percentage of voluntary activation after the second and third games, indicating the presence of central fatigue. Heart rate responses remained predominantly in a range equivalent to moderate activity intensity in all games. In addition, perceptual parameters were associated with reduced frequency of throws and density of actions. These findings suggest significant implications for the management of physical training, game strategy during a competition, and fixture change from three to two games per day.

Immediate voluntary activation deficits following submaximal eccentric contractions of knee extensors are associated with alterations of the sense of movement

The mechanisms underlying movement sense alterations following repeated eccentric contractions remain unclear. This study concomitantly investigated the effects of unilateral eccentric contractions on movement sense and on neuromuscular function at the knee before, immediately after (POST), 24 (POST24) and 48 (POST48) h after the exercise. Twelve participants performed sets of submaximal knee extensors (KE) eccentric contractions until a 20% decrease in maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque was reached. Threshold to detect passive movement (TTDPM) tasks were used to assess movement sense during both knee flexion (TTDPM_FLEX) and extension (TTDPM_EXT). KE fatigability was assessed using the interpolated twitch technique. TTDPM values expressed in seconds and the percentage of unsuccessful trials only increased at POST during TTDPM_FLEX and TTDPM_EXT. The 20%-MVIC decrease was associated with significant decreases in voluntary activation level (- 12.7%, p < 0.01) and potentiated doublet torque at 100 Hz (- 18.1%, p < 0.001). At POST24, despite persistent reductions of maximal voluntary and electrically evoked torques associated with increased perceived muscle soreness, TTDPM values and the percentage of unsuccessful trials returned to baseline values. Consequently, movement sense alterations were only observed in the presence of voluntary activation deficits, suggesting that some exercise-induced central alterations may affect the somatosensory function.

Relationship between neuromuscular fatigue, muscle activation and the work done above the critical power during severe intensity exercise

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of this study? Does the work done above critical power (W') or muscle activation determine the degree of peripheral fatigue induced by cycling time-trials performed in the severe intensity domain? What is the main finding and its importance? We found that peripheral fatigue increased when power output and muscle activation increased whereas W' did not change between the time-trials. Therefore, no relationship was found between W' and exercise-induced peripheral fatigue such as previously postulated in the literature. In contrast, we found a significant association between EMG amplitude during exercise and exercise-induced reduction in the potentiated quadriceps twitch, suggesting that muscle activation plays a key role in determining peripheral fatigue during severe intensity exercise.

ABSTRACT

In order to determine the relationship between peripheral fatigue, muscle activation and the total work done above critical power (W'), ten men and four women performed, on separated days, self-paced cycling time-trials of 3, 6, 10, and 15 min. Exercise-induced quadriceps fatigue was quantified using pre- to post-exercise (15 s through 15 min recovery) changes in maximal voluntary contraction peak force (MVC), voluntary activation (VA) and potentiated twitch force (QT). VA was measured using the interpolated twitch technique, and QT was evoked by electrical stimulations of the femoral nerve. Quadriceps muscle activation was determined using the root mean square of surface electromyography of vastus lateralis (VL_RMS ), vastus medialis (VM_RMS ) and rectus femoris (RF_RMS ). Critical power and W' were calculated from the power/duration relationship from the four time-trials. Mean power output and mean VL_RMS , VM_RMS and RF_RMS were greater during shorter compared to longer exercises (P<0.05) whereas no significant between-trials change in W' was found. The magnitude of exercise-induced reductions in QT increased with the increase in power output (P<0.001) and were associated with mean VL_RMS and VM_RMS (P<0.001, r² >0.369) but not W' (P>0.150, r² <0.044). Reduction in VA tended (P = 0.067) to be more pronounced with the lengthening in time-trial duration while no significant between-trials change in MVC were found. Our data suggest that peripheral fatigue is not related to the amount of work done above the critical power but rather to the level of muscle activation during exercise the severe intensity domain. Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Cycling Time Trial Performance and Prefrontal Cortex Activation

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulatory technique that delivers low levels of a constant current via scalp electrodes to specifically targeted areas of the brain. The effects of tDCS on whole-body exercise performance has been of interest in recent literature. The purpose of the current investigation was to investigate if tDCS, administered via Halo Sport, influences time trial performance in trained cyclists, and if changes in exercise performance are associated with prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation and/or muscle oxygenation (SmO2). Methods: Twelve recreationally trained cyclists volunteered to participate in a crossover study design involving two 10-kilometer time trials following 20 min of tDCS or a sham condition. Results: t-tests showed there was no significant difference in performance (time to completion) or physiological measures (blood lactate (BL) concentration, heart rate (HR), SmO2, PFC oxygenation) between the Halo and sham conditions. Conclusions: These results indicate that the application of tDCS via Halo Sport does not induce changes in exercise performance or related physiological parameters during a 10-kilometer cycling time trial.

Perception of effort during an isometric contraction is influenced by prior muscle lengthening or shortening

PURPOSE

Following a shortening or lengthening muscle contraction, torque produced in the isometric steady state is lower (residual torque depression; rTD) or higher (residual torque enhancement; rTE), respectively, compared to a purely isometric contraction at the same final muscle length and level of activation. This is referred to as the history dependence of force. When matching a given torque level, there is greater muscle activation (electromyography; EMG) following shortening and less activation following lengthening. Owing to these differences in neuromuscular activation, it is unclear whether perception of effort is altered by the history dependence of force during plantar-flexion.

METHODS

Experiment 1 tested whether perception of effort differed between the rTD and rTE state when torque was matched. Experiment 2 tested whether perception of effort differed between the rTD and rTE state when EMG was matched. Finally, experiment 3 tested whether EMG differed between the rTD and rTE state when perception of effort was matched.

RESULTS

When torque was matched, both EMG and perception of effort were higher in the rTD compared to rTE state. When EMG was matched, torque was lower in the rTD compared to rTE state while perception of effort did not differ between the two states. When perception of effort was matched, torque was lower in the rTD compared to rTE state and EMG did not differ between the two states.

CONCLUSION

The combined results from these experiments indicate that the history dependence of force alters one's perception of effort, dependent on the level of motor command.

Effects of Caffeine Chewing Gum on Exercise Tolerance and Neuromuscular Responses in Well-Trained Runners

J Strength Cond Res 35(6): 1671-1676, 2021-This study aimed to investigate the effects of caffeinated chewing gum on endurance exercise, neuromuscular properties, and rate of perceived exertion on exercise tolerance. Twelve trained male runners (31.3 ± 6.4 years; 70.5 ± 6.6 kg; 175.2 ± 6.2 cm; 9.4 ± 2.7% body fat; and V̇o2max = 62.0 ± 4.2 ml·kg-1·min-1) took part of the study. The athletes performed an intermittent treadmill test to determine maximal aerobic speed and delta 50% (Δ50%) intensity. In the following visits, they performed 2 randomized time to exhaustion tests (15.4 ± 0.7 km·h-1) after the ingestion of 300 mg of caffeine in a double-blind, crossover, randomized design. Maximal voluntary contraction of the knee extensor associated to surface electromyographic recording and the twitch interpolation technique were assessed before and immediately after the tests to quantify neuromuscular fatigue of the knee extensor muscles. Caffeine significantly improved exercise tolerance by 18% (p < 0.01). Neuromuscular responses decreased similarly after time to exhaustion in both exercise conditions; however, athletes were able to run a longer distance in the caffeine condition. The performance improvement induced by caffeine seems to have a neuromuscular contribution because athletes were able to run a longer distance with the same neuromuscular impairment.

Prior Upper Body Exercise Impairs 4-km Cycling Time-Trial Performance Without Altering Neuromuscular Function

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of previous exhaustive upper body exercise on performance and neuromuscular fatigue following a 4-km cycling time-trial (4-km TT). Methods: Eight recreational cyclists performed a 4-km TT with (ARM_PRE) or without (CONTR) a previous arm-crank maximal incremental test. In each experimental session, neuromuscular fatigue was evaluated with a series of electrically evoked and maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC). Oxygen uptake ( V ˙ O₂), heart rate, electromyographic muscle activity (EMG_RMS) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were also recorded throughout the 4-km TT. Results: The average power output during the 4-km TT was reduced (P = .027) for the ARM_PRE (299 ± 59 W) group, compared with CONTR (310 ± 59 W) and overall performance in 4-km TT was impaired (P = .021) in ARM_PRE (382 ± 28 s) compared with CONTR (376 ± 27 s). The decrease observed in MVC (P = .033) and potentiated peak twitch force (P = .004) at post-TT were similar between the ARM_PRE and CONTR conditions (P = .739 and P = .493, respectively). There was no (P = .619) change in voluntary activation at post-TT between conditions. V ˙ O₂, EMG_RMS and RPE measured throughout the 4-km TT were not significantly different between the conditions (P = .558, P = .558 and P = .940, respectively). The rate of RPE change relative to power output average and heart rate was higher (P = .030 and P = .013, respectively) in ARM_PRE (0.031 ± 0.018 AU/W and 168 ± 8 bpm) than CONTR (0.022 ± 0.010 AU/W and 161 ± 7 bpm). Conclusion: These results suggest that impaired performance in ARM_PRE was mostly due to pronounced perception of effort rather than neuromuscular fatigue.

Motor strategy during postural control is not muscle fatigue joint-dependent, but muscle fatigue increases postural asymmetry

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ankle and hip muscle fatigue on motor adjustments (experiment 1) and symmetry (experiment 2) of postural control during a quiet standing task. Twenty-three young adults performed a bipedal postural task on separate force platforms, before and after a bilateral ankle and hip muscle fatigue protocol (randomized). Ankle and hip muscles were fatigued separately using a standing calf raise protocol (ankle fatigue) on a step and flexion and extension of the hip (hip fatigue) sitting on a chair, at a controlled movement frequency (0.5Hz), respectively. In both experiments, force, center of pressure, and electromyography parameters were measured. The symmetry index was used in experiment 2 to analyze the postural asymmetry in the parameters. Our main findings showed that muscle fatigue impaired postural stability, regardless of the fatigued muscle region (i.e., ankle or hip). In addition, young adults used an ankle motor strategy (experiment 1) before and after both the ankle and hip muscle fatigue protocols. Moreover, we found increased asymmetry between the lower limbs (experiment 2) during the quiet standing task after muscle fatigue. Thus, we can conclude that the postural motor strategy is not muscle fatigue joint-dependent and a fatigue task increases postural asymmetry, regardless of the fatigued region (hip or ankle). These findings could be applied in sports training and rehabilitation programs with the objective of reducing the fatigue effects on asymmetry and improving balance.

Time Course of Recovery after Cycling Repeated Sprints

PURPOSE

The present study investigated the recovery of performance and neuromuscular fatigue after cycling repeated sprints.

METHODS

Ten participants performed two sessions of repeated sprints (one session: 10 × 10-s sprints, 30-s recovery) separated by 24 h (R24-S1 and R24-S2) and two sessions separated by 48 h (R48-S1 and R48-S2). The recovery condition (i.e., 24 or 48 h) was randomized and separated by 1 wk. All sessions were performed on a recumbent bike, allowing minimal delay between sprints termination and neuromuscular measurements. Neuromuscular function of knee extensors (neuromuscular assessment [NMA]) was assessed before sessions (presession), after the fifth sprint (midsession), and immediately after (postsession). Before sessions, baseline NMA was also carried out on an isometric chair. The NMA (bike and chair) was composed of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of knee extension and peripheral neuromuscular stimulation during the MVC and on relaxed muscle.

RESULTS

The sprints performance was not significantly different between sessions and did not presented significant interaction between recovery conditions. MVC was significantly lower at R24-S2 compared with R24-S1 (-6.5% ± 8.8%, P = 0.038) and R48-S2 (-5.6% ± 8.2%, P = 0.048), whereas resting potentiated high-frequency doublet (Db100) was lower at R24-S2 compared with R24-S1 (-10.4 ± 8.3, P = 0.01) (NMA on chair). There were significant reductions in MVC (>30%, P < 0.001) and Db100 (>38%, P < 0.001) from pre- to postsession in all sessions, without significant interactions between recovery conditions (NMA on bike).

CONCLUSION

Cycling repeated sprints induce significant fatigue, particularly at the peripheral level, which is fully restored after 48 h, but not 24 h, of recovery. One versus two days of recovery does not affect neuromuscular fatigue appearance during cycling repeated-sprint sessions.

Sustained Isometric Wrist Flexion and Extension Maximal Voluntary Contractions Similarly Impair Hand-Tracking Accuracy in Young Adults Using a Wrist Robot

Due to their stabilizing role, the wrist extensor muscles demonstrate an earlier onset of performance fatigability and may impair movement accuracy more than the wrist flexors. However, minimal fatigue research has been conducted at the wrist. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine how sustained isometric contractions of the wrist extensors/flexors influence hand-tracking accuracy. While gripping the handle of a three-degrees-of-freedom wrist manipulandum, 12 male participants tracked a 2:3 Lissajous curve (±32° wrist flexion/extension; ±18° radial/ulnar deviation). A blue, circular target moved about the trajectory and participants tracked the target with a yellow circle (corresponding to the handle's position). Five baseline tracking trials were performed prior to the fatiguing task. Participants then exerted either maximal wrist extension or flexion force (performed on separate days) against a force transducer until they were unable to maintain 25% of their pre-fatigue maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Participants then performed 7 tracking trials from immediately post-fatigue to 10 min after. Performance fatigability was assessed using various metrics to account for errors in position-tracking, error tendencies, and movement smoothness. While there were no differences in tracking error between flexion/extension sessions, tracking error significantly increased immediately post-fatigue (Baseline: 1.40 ± 0.54°, Post-fatigue: 2.02 ± 0.51°, P < 0.05). However, error rapidly recovered, with no differences in error from baseline after 1-min post-fatigue. These findings demonstrate that sustained isometric extension/flexion contractions similarly impair tracking accuracy of the hand. This work serves as an important step to future research into workplace health and preventing injuries of the distal upper-limb.

Cycling Performance Enhancement After Drop Jumps May Be Attributed to Postactivation Potentiation and Increased Anaerobic Capacity

Cycling performance enhancement after drop jumps may be attributed to postactivation potentiation and increased anaerobic capacity. J Strength Cond Res 34(9): 2465-2475, 2020-The study aimed to investigate the effects of drop jumps (DJs) on supramaximal cycling performance, anaerobic capacity (AC), electromyography, and fatigue. Thirty-eight recreational cyclists participated into 3 independent studies. In study 1 (n = 14), neuromuscular fatigue was assessed with the twitch interpolation technique. In study 2 (n = 16), the AC and metabolic contributions were measured with the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit method and the sum of the glycolytic and phosphagen pathways. In study 3 (n = 8), postactivation potentiation (PAP) induced by repeated DJs was evaluated. The DJ protocol was effective for significantly improving cycling performance by +9.8 and +7.4% in studies 1 and 2, respectively (p ≤ 0.05). No differences were observed in electromyography between conditions (p = 0.70); however, the force evoked by a doublet at low (10 Hz) and high frequencies (100 Hz) declined for control (-16.4 and -23.9%) and DJ protocols (-18.6 and -26.9%) (p < 0.01). Force decline was greater in the DJ condition (p < 0.03). Anaerobic capacity and glycolytic pathway contributions were +7.7 and +9.1% higher after DJ protocol (p = 0.01). Peak force during maximal voluntary contraction (+5.6%) and doublet evoked force at 100 Hz (+5.0%) were higher after DJs. The DJ protocol induced PAP, improved supramaximal cycling performance, and increased AC despite higher peripheral fatigue.

Is there an intermuscular relationship in voluntary activation capacities and contractile kinetics?

PURPOSE

The force-generating capacities of human skeletal muscles are interrelated, highlighting a common construct of limb strength. This study aimed to further determine whether there is an intermuscular relationship in maximal voluntary activation capacities and contractile kinetics of human muscles.

METHODS

Twenty-six young healthy individuals participated in this study. Isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque, voluntary activation level (VAL), and doublet twitch contractile kinetics (contraction time and half-relaxation time) evoked by a paired supramaximal peripheral nerve stimulation at 100 Hz were obtained in elbow flexors, knee extensors, plantar flexors and dorsiflexors of the dominant limb.

RESULTS

Peak MVC torque had significant positive correlations between all muscle group pairs (all P values < 0.01). A significant positive correlation for VAL was found only between knee extensors and plantar flexors (r = 0.60, P < 0.01). There were no significant correlations between all muscle group pairs for doublet twitch contraction time and doublet twitch half-relaxation time.

DISCUSSION

These results show that there is a partial common construct of maximal voluntary activation capacities that only concerns muscle groups that have incomplete activation during MVC (i.e., knee extensors and plantar flexors). This suggests that the common construct of MVC strength between these two muscle groups is partly influenced by neural mechanisms. The lack of intermuscular relationship of contractile kinetics showed that there is no common construct of muscle contractile kinetics, as assessed in vivo by investigating the time-course of evoked doublet twitch contractions.

Maturation-related changes in the development and etiology of neuromuscular fatigue

PURPOSE

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of maturation on the etiology of neuromuscular fatigue induced by repeated maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC).

METHODS

Nine prepubertal boys (9.9 ± 1.3 years), eight male adolescents (13.6 ± 1.3 years) and eleven men (23.4 ± 3.0 years) performed a series of repeated isometric MVICs of the knee extensors until the MVIC torque reached 60% of its initial value. Magnetic stimulations were delivered to the femoral nerve every five MVICs to follow the course of voluntary activation level (VA) and the potentiated twitch torque (Qtw_pot).

RESULTS

Task failure was reached after 52.9 ± 12.7, 42.6 ± 12.5, and 26.6 ± 6.3 repetitions in boys, adolescents and men, respectively. VA remained unchanged in men whereas it decreased significantly and similarly in boys and adolescents (p < 0.001). In contrast, Qtw_pot remained unchanged in boys and decreased significantly less in adolescents than adults (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Children and adolescents experience less peripheral and more central fatigue than adults. However, adolescents experience more peripheral fatigue than children for a comparable amount of central fatigue. This finding supports the idea that the tolerance of the central nervous system to peripheral fatigue could increase during maturation.

Peripheral Muscle Function During Repeated Changes of Direction in Basketball

Purpose: To examine differences between adult male basketball players of different competitive levels (study 1) and changes over a basketball season (study 2) of knee-extensor peripheral muscle function during multistage change-of-direction exercise (MCODE). Methods: In study 1, 111 players from 4 different divisions completed the MCODE during the regular season. In study 2, the MCODE was performed before (T1) and after (T2) the preparation period and during the competitive season (T3) by 32 players from divisions I, II, and III. The MCODE comprised 4 levels of increasing intensity for each player. The twitch peak torque (PT) of knee extensors was measured after each level. PTmax (the highest value of PT) and fatigue were calculated. Results: In study 1, the authors found possibly small differences (effect size [ES] [90% confidence interval] -0.24 [0.39]) in fatigue between divisions I and II. Division I was characterized by likely (ES 0.30-0.65) and very likely to almost certain (ES 0.74-1.41) better PTmax and fatigue levels than divisions III and VI, respectively. In study 2, fatigue was very likely reduced (ES -0.91 to -0.51) among all divisions from T1 to T2, whereas PTmax was likely to very likely reduced (ES -0.51 to -0.39) in divisions II and III. Conclusions: Professional basketball players are characterized by a better peripheral muscle function during MCODE. Most of the seasonal changes in peripheral muscle function occurred after the preparation period. These findings inform practitioners on the development of training programs to enhance the ability to sustain repeated change-of-direction efforts.

Acetaminophen ingestion improves muscle activation and performance during a 3-min all-out cycling test

Acute acetaminophen (ACT) ingestion has been shown to enhance cycling time-trial performance. The purpose of this study was to assess whether ACT ingestion enhances muscle activation and critical power (CP) during maximal cycling exercise. Sixteen active male participants completed two 3-min all-out tests against a fixed resistance on an electronically braked cycle ergometer 60 min after ingestion of 1 g of ACT or placebo (maltodextrin, PL). CP was estimated as the mean power output over the final 30 s of the test and W′ (the curvature constant of the power–duration relationship) was estimated as the work done above CP. The femoral nerve was stimulated every 30 s to measure membrane excitability (M-wave) and surface electromyography (EMGRMS) was recorded continuously to infer muscle activation. Compared with PL, ACT ingestion increased CP (ACT: 297 ± 32 W vs. PL: 288 ± 31 W, P < 0.001) and total work done (ACT: 66.4 ± 6.5 kJ vs. PL: 65.4 ± 6.4 kJ, P = 0.03) without impacting W′ (ACT: 13.1 ± 2.9 kJ vs. PL: 13.6 ± 2.4 kJ, P = 0.19) or the M-wave amplitude (P = 0.66) during the 3-min all-out cycling test. Normalised EMGRMS amplitude declined throughout the 3-min protocol in both PL and ACT conditions; however, the decline in EMGRMS amplitude was attenuated in the ACT condition, such that the EMGRMS amplitude was greater in ACT compared with PL over the last 60 s of the test (P = 0.04). These findings indicate that acute ACT ingestion might increase performance and CP during maximal cycling exercise by enhancing muscle activation.

Toxic doses of caffeine are needed to increase skeletal muscle contractility

Discrepant results have been reported regarding an intramuscular mechanism underlying the ergogenic effect of caffeine on neuromuscular function in humans. Here, we reevaluated the effect of caffeine on muscular force production in humans and combined this with measurements of the caffeine dose-response relationship on force and cytosolic free [Ca²⁺] ([Ca²⁺]_i) in isolated mouse muscle fibers. Twenty-one healthy and physically active men (29 ± 9 yr, 178 ± 6 cm, 73 ± 10 kg, mean ± SD) took part in the present study. Nine participants were involved in two experimental sessions during which supramaximal single and paired electrical stimulations (at 10 and 100 Hz) were applied to the femoral nerve to record evoked forces. Evoked forces were recorded before and 1 h after ingestion of 1) 6 mg caffeine/kg body mass or 2) placebo. Caffeine plasma concentration was measured in 12 participants. In addition, submaximal tetanic force and [Ca²⁺]_i were measured in single mouse flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscle fibers exposed to 100 nM up to 5 mM caffeine. Six milligrams of caffeine per kilogram body mass (plasma concentration ~40 µM) did not increase electrically evoked forces in humans. In superfused FDB single fibers, millimolar caffeine concentrations (i.e., 15- to 35-fold above usual concentrations observed in humans) were required to increase tetanic force and [Ca²⁺]_i. Our results suggest that toxic doses of caffeine are required to increase muscle contractility, questioning the purported intramuscular ergogenic effect of caffeine in humans.

Mental fatigue does not alter performance or neuromuscular fatigue development during self-paced exercise in recreationally trained cyclists

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mental fatigue, characterized by a subjective feeling of tiredness, on the development of neuromuscular fatigue during a 4-km cycling time trial (4-km TT).

METHODS

Eight recreationally trained male cyclists performed a 4-km TT after either performing a prolonged cognitive task (mental fatigue) or after viewing emotionally neutral documentaries (control). The neuromuscular function of the knee extensors was assessed using electrical nerve stimulation at baseline, before (pre-TT), and after (post-TT) the 4-km TT. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and physiological variables were periodically measured during 4-km TT.

RESULTS

Subjective ratings of fatigue increased significantly only after a prolonged cognitive task (P = 0.022). Neuromuscular function at baseline was similar between conditions and remained unchanged at pre-TT. Time to complete the 4-km TT was similar between control (376 ± 27 s) and mental fatigue (376 ± 26 s). There was no significant difference between conditions for RPE, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and HR throughout the exercise. The 4-km TT-induced similar decrease (from baseline to post-TT) in maximal voluntary contraction (mental fatigue - 11 ± 10%, control - 16 ± 12%), twitch force (mental fatigue - 26 ± 16%, control - 24 ± 17%), and voluntary activation (mental fatigue - 5 ± 7%, control - 3 ± 2%) for both conditions.

CONCLUSION

Mental fatigue induced by prolonged cognitive task does not impair performance nor alter the degree of central and peripheral fatigue development during self-paced exercise in recreationally trained cyclists.

Greater fatigability in knee-flexors vs. knee-extensors after a standardized fatiguing protocol

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a standardized fatiguing protocol on central and peripheral fatigue in knee-flexors and knee-extensors. Thirteen healthy men (age: 23 ± 3 years; height: 1.78 ± 0.09 m; body-mass: 73.6 ± 9.2 kg) volunteered for the present study. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), Electromyography (EMG) activity, voluntary activation level (VAL) as an index of central fatigue and twitch potentiation as an index of peripheral fatigue were measured before and after the fatiguing protocol. The fatiguing protocol consisted of a 0.6 duty-cycle to exhaustion (6 s isometric contraction, 4 s recovery) at 70% MVC. After the fatiguing protocol, MVC decreased in both (Effect-size (ES) = 1.14) and knee-extensors (ES = 1.14), and EMG activity increased in both knee-flexors (ES = 2.33) and knee-extensors (ES = 1.54). Decreases in VAL occurred in knee-flexors (ES = 0.92) but not in knee-extensors (ES = 0.04). Decreases in potentiation occurred in both knee-flexors (ES = 0.84) and knee-extensors (ES = 0.58). The greater central occurrence of fatigue in knee-flexors than in knee-extensors may depend on the different muscle morphology and coupled with a greater tolerance to fatigue in knee-extensors. The present data add further insight to the complicated knee-flexors-to-knee-extensors strength relationship and the mechanisms behind the different occurrence of fatigue.

Effects of vibration-induced fatigue on the H-reflex

Vibration exercise (VE) has been suggested as an effective training for improving muscle strength and coordination. However, the underlying physiological adaptation processes are not yet fully understood, limiting the development of safe and effective exercise protocols. To better understand the neuromuscular responses elicited by VE, we aimed at investigating the acute effects of superimposed vibration on the Hoffmann reflex (H-reflex), measured after fatiguing exercise. Twenty-five volunteers performed four isometric contractions of the right Flexor Carpi Radialis (FCR) with baseline load at 80% of their maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), both with no vibration and with superimposed vibration at 15, 30, and 45 Hz. Fatigue was estimated by MVC test and estimation of electromyographic spectral compression. H-reflex suppression was estimated as the relative decrease after exercise. Our results show that fatiguing exercise determined a decrease in H-reflex amplitude compared to rest condition while vibration determined a lower H-reflex suppression as compared to no vibration. The superimposition of 30-Hz vibration determined the largest acute reduction in force generating capacity (36 N, p < 0.05) and the lowest H-reflex suppression (20%, p < 0.05). These results suggest VE to be particularly suitable in rehabilitation programs for rapid restoration of muscle form and function after immobilization periods.

Acute acetaminophen ingestion improves performance and muscle activation during maximal intermittent knee extensor exercise

Aim

Acetaminophen is a commonly used medicine for pain relief and emerging evidence suggests that it may improve endurance exercise performance. This study investigated some of the physiological mechanisms by which acute acetaminophen ingestion might blunt muscle fatigue development.

Methods

Thirteen active males completed 60 × 3 s maximum voluntary contractions (MVC) of the knee extensors with each contraction separated by a 2 s passive recovery period. This protocol was completed 60 min after ingesting 1 g of maltodextrin (placebo) or 1 g of acetaminophen on two separate visits. Peripheral nerve stimulation was administered every 6th contraction for assessment of neuromuscular fatigue development, with the critical torque (CT), which reflects the maximal sustainable rate of oxidative metabolism, taken as the mean torque over the last 12 contractions. Surface electromyography was recorded continuously as a measure of muscle activation.

Results

Mean torque (61 ± 11 vs. 58 ± 14% pre-exercise MVC) and CT (44 ± 13 vs. 40 ± 15% pre-exercise MVC) were greater in the acetaminophen trial compared to placebo (both P < 0.05). Voluntary activation and potentiated twitch declined at a similar rate in both conditions (P > 0.05). However, the decline in electromyography amplitude was attenuated in the acetaminophen trial, with electromyography amplitude being greater compared to placebo from 210 s onwards (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

These findings indicate that acute acetaminophen ingestion might be ergogenic by increasing CT and preserving muscle activation during high-intensity exercise.

Short vs. long pulses for testing knee extensor neuromuscular properties: does it matter?

PURPOSE

The present study aimed at comparing knee extensor neuromuscular properties determined with transcutaneous electrical stimulation using two pulse durations before and after a standardized fatigue protocol.

METHODS

In the first sub-study, 19 healthy participants (ten women and nine men; 28 ± 5 years) took part to two separate testing sessions involving the characterization of voluntary activation (twitch interpolation technique), muscle contractility (evoked forces by single and paired stimuli), and neuromuscular propagation (M-wave amplitude from vastus lateralis and vastus medialis muscles) obtained at supramaximal intensity with a pulse duration of either 0.2 or 1 ms. The procedures were identical in the second sub-study (N = 11), except that neuromuscular properties were also evaluated after a standardized fatiguing exercise. Electrical stimulation was delivered through large surface electrodes positioned over the quadriceps muscle and a visual analog scale was used to evaluate the discomfort to paired stimuli evoked at rest.

RESULTS

There was no difference between pulse durations in the estimates of voluntary activation, neuromuscular propagation, and muscle contractility both in the non-fatigued and fatigued states. The discomfort associated with supramaximal paired electrical stimuli was also comparable between the two pulse durations.

CONCLUSIONS

It appears that 0.2- and 1-ms-long pulses provide a comparable evaluation of knee extensor neuromuscular properties.

Neuromuscular Fatigue After Repeated Jumping With Concomitant Electrical Stimulation

PURPOSE

To evaluate the etiology and extent of neuromuscular fatigue induced by 50 squat jumps performed with and without neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the knee extensors.

METHODS

Nine healthy, recreationally active men (24 ± 2 y) took part in 2 experiments. These consisted of 50 squat jumps performed with stimulation (NMES) or without (CON). Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force, maximal voluntary activation level (VAL), and forces evoked by single and double (10 and 100 Hz) stimulations were recorded before and after the 50 jumps. NMES was delivered at the maximal tolerated intensity.

RESULTS

Despite average jump height being ∼16% lower in the NMES than in the CON session, a reduction over time in jump height was only found in the NMES condition (-6%). After the 50 jumps, MVC force was reduced to a greater extent in NMES than in CON (-25% ± 11% vs -11% ± 12%). Similarly, forces evoked by single stimulations, as well as by 10-Hz and 100-Hz paired stimulations, were reduced to a greater extent in NMES (-33% ± 12%, -42% ± 15%, and -25% ± 13%) than in CON (-21% ± 6%, -30% ± 9%, and -14% ± 11%). VAL was not significantly altered by either condition.

CONCLUSION

Performing repeated squat jumps with concomitant NMES induced a greater fatigue than squat jumps performed alone and might potentially represent a stronger training stimulus.

Voluntary activation of the trapezius muscle in cases with neck/shoulder pain compared to healthy controls

Subjects reporting neck/shoulder pain have been shown to generate less force during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVC) of the shoulder muscles compared to healthy controls. This has been suggested to be caused by a pain-related decrease in voluntary activation (VA) rather than lack of muscle mass. The aim of the present study was to investigate VA of the trapezius muscle during MVCs in subjects with and without neck/shoulder pain by use of the twitch interpolation technique. Ten cases suffering from pain and ten age and gender matched, healthy controls were included in the study. Upper trapezius muscle thickness was measured using ultrasonography and pain intensity was measured on a 100mm visual analog scale (VAS). VA was calculated from five maximal muscle activation attempts. Superimposed stimuli were delivered to the accessory nerve at peak force and during a 2% MVC following the maximal contraction. Presented as mean±SD for cases and controls, respectively: VAS; 16.0±14.4mm and 2.1±4.1mm (P=0.004), MVC; 545±161N and 664±195N (P=0.016), upper trapezius muscle thickness; 10.9±1.9mm and 10.4±1.5mm (P=0.20), VA; 93.6±14.2% and 96.3±6.0% (P=0.29). In spite of significantly eight-fold higher pain intensity and ∼20% lower MVC for cases compared to controls, no difference was found in VA. Possible explanations for the reduction in MVC could be differences in co-activation of antagonists and synergists as well as muscle quality.

Central and peripheral fatigue development in the shoulder muscle with obesity during an isometric endurance task

BACKGROUND

Fatigue increases the likelihood of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders and injury. Due to the physiological and neuromuscular changes that accompany obesity, it may alter the fatigue development mechanism and exacerbate injury risk. The upper extremities have the highest incidence rates for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, the goals of this study were to investigate the effect of obesity on central vs. peripheral fatigue as well as on the physical signs of fatigue on the middle deltoid muscle.

METHODS

A measure of central activation ratio was used to quantify central fatigue by considering the increment in the torque output by superimposed twitch relative to its corresponding maximum voluntary contraction. For this purpose, electrical stimulation was delivered at the middle deltoid muscles of 22 non-obese (18 < body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2) and 17 obese (30 < BMI < 40 kg/m2) individuals aged 18-32 years old. Participants completed superimposed maximum voluntary isometric contractions of shoulder abduction before and after a sustained isometric fatiguing task at either 30 or 60% of the muscle capacity. Differences in endurance time, torque fluctuation, torque loss, and muscle activity measured by an electromyography sensor were also investigated.

RESULTS

A greater reduction of voluntary activation of motor units (p = 0.001) with fatigue was observed for individuals who are obese. Contrary to the effect of obesity on central fatigue, a trend toward reduced peripheral fatigue (p = 0.06) was observed for the obese group compared to the non-obese group. On average, a 14% higher rate of torque loss per second was observed among individuals with obesity in comparison to non-obese participants.

CONCLUSIONS

The observed greater contribution of central fatigue during the sustained endurance tasks suggests that among young healthy obese individuals, the faster fatigue development with obesity, commonly reported in the literature, is most likely due to the central elements rather than the peripheral factors. This finding has implications for fatigue prevention programs during sustained exertions and can help to develop training, work, and rest schedules considering obesity.

A single-bout of Endurance Exercise Modulates EEG Microstates Temporal Features

Electrical neuroimaging is a promising method to explore the spontaneous brain function after physical exercise. The present study aims to investigate the effect of acute physical exercise on the temporal dynamic of the resting brain activity captured by the four conventional map topographies (microstates) described in the literature, and to associate these brain changes with the post-exercise neuromuscular function. Twenty endurance-trained subjects performed a 30-min biking task at 60% of their maximal aerobic power followed by a 10 km all-out time trial. Before and after each exercise, knee-extensor neuromuscular function and resting EEG were collected. Both exercises resulted in a similar increase in microstate class C stability and duration, as well as an increase in transition probability of moving toward microstate class C. After the first exercise, the increase in class C global explained variance was correlated with the indice of muscle alterations (100 Hz paired stimuli). After the second exercise, the increase in class C mean duration was correlated with the 100 Hz paired stimuli, but also with the reduction in maximal voluntary force. Interestingly, microstate class C has been associated with the salience resting-state network, which participates in integrating multisensory modalities. We speculate that temporal reorganization of the brain state after exercise could be partially modulated by the muscle afferents that project into the salience resting-state network, and indirectly participates in modulating the motor behavior.

Futsal Match-Related Fatigue Affects Running Performance and Neuromuscular Parameters but Not Finishing Kick Speed or Accuracy

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of futsal match-related fatigue on running performance, neuromuscular variables, and finishing kick speed and accuracy.

Methods: Ten professional futsal players participated in the study (age: 22.2 ± 2.5 years) and initially performed an incremental protocol to determine maximum oxygen uptake (V˙O2max: 50.6 ± 4.9 mL.kg⁻¹.min⁻¹). Next, simulated games were performed, in four periods of 10 min during which heart rate and blood lactate concentration were monitored. The entire games were video recorded for subsequent automatic tracking. Before and immediately after the simulated game, neuromuscular function was measured by maximal isometric force of knee extension, voluntary activation using twitch interpolation technique, and electromyographic activity. Before, at half time, and immediately after the simulated game, the athletes also performed a set of finishing kicks for ball speed and accuracy measurements.

Results: Total distance covered (1st half: 1986.6 ± 74.4 m; 2nd half: 1856.0 ± 129.7 m, P = 0.00) and distance covered per minute (1st half: 103.2 ± 4.4 m.min⁻¹; 2nd half: 96.4 ± 7.5 m.min⁻¹, P = 0.00) demonstrated significant declines during the simulated game, as well as maximal isometric force of knee extension (Before: 840.2 ± 66.2 N; After: 751.6 ± 114.3 N, P = 0.04) and voluntary activation (Before: 85.9 ± 7.5%; After: 74.1 ± 12.3%, P = 0.04), however ball speed and accuracy during the finishing kicks were not significantly affected.

Conclusion: Therefore, we conclude that despite the decline in running performance and neuromuscular variables presenting an important manifestation of central fatigue, this condition apparently does not affect the speed and accuracy of finishing kicks.

Anticipation of magnetic and electrical stimuli does not impair maximal voluntary force production

INTRODUCTION

Knowing electro-myostimulation (EMS) will be delivered during a maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) has been demonstrated to limit maximal force production in the knee extensors. Many recent studies instead deliver peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during MVCs to assess neuromuscular function. This study investigated the effects of EMS, PNS and TMS on maximal voluntary force production and muscle activation in the knee extensors.

METHODS

Nineteen healthy participants performed MVCs under 8 randomized conditions: no stimulation, TMS at 40% of maximal stimulator output, TMS at 70% of maximal stimulator output, single-pulse PNS, paired (100-Hz)-pulse PNS, single-pulse EMS and two conditions where subjects expected TMS at 70% of maximal stimulator output or paired-pulse PNS yet no stimulus was delivered. Knee extensor force, discomfort associated with the stimulus and vastus lateralis, rectus femoris and biceps femoris electromyography (EMG) were recorded.

RESULTS

There were no differences between MVC forces and maximal agonist and antagonist muscle activity between conditions. Discomfort was greatest for EMS and least for TMS.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates that in familiarized subjects, knowing a stimulus (EMS, PNS or TMS) will occur does not impair maximal force or EMG produced despite differences in discomfort associated with the stimulus modalities. These techniques can be used to investigate central drive and peripheral function, at least for intensities comparable to those employed in the present study.

Movement-Related Cortical Potential Amplitude Reduction after Cycling Exercise Relates to the Extent of Neuromuscular Fatigue

Exercise-induced fatigue affects the motor control and the ability to generate a given force or power. Surface electroencephalography allows researchers to investigate movement-related cortical potentials (MRCP), which reflect preparatory brain activity 1.5 s before movement onset. Although the MRCP amplitude appears to increase after repetitive single-joint contractions, the effects of large-muscle group dynamic exercise on such pre-motor potential remain to be described. Sixteen volunteers exercised 30 min at 60% of the maximal aerobic power on a cycle ergometer, followed by a 10-km all-out time trial. Before and after each of these tasks, knee extensor neuromuscular function was investigated using maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) combined with electrical stimulations of the femoral nerve. MRCP was recorded during 60 knee extensions after each neuromuscular sequence. The exercise resulted in a significant decrease in the knee extensor MVC force after the 30-min exercise (−10 ± 8%) and the time trial (−21 ± 9%). The voluntary activation level (VAL; −6 ± 8 and −12 ± 10%), peak twitch (Pt; −21 ± 16 and −32 ± 17%), and paired stimuli (P100 Hz; −7 ± 11 and −12 ± 13%) were also significantly reduced after the 30-min exercise and the time trial. The first exercise was followed by a decrease in the MRCP, mainly above the mean activity measured at electrodes FC1-FC2, whereas the reduction observed after the time trial was related to the FC1-FC2 and C2 electrodes. After both exercises, the reduction in the late MRCP component above FC1-FC2 was significantly correlated with the reduction in P100 Hz (r = 0.61), and the reduction in the same component above C2 was significantly correlated with the reduction in VAL (r = 0.64). In conclusion, large-muscle group exercise induced a reduction in pre-motor potential, which was related to muscle alterations and resulted in the inability to produce a maximal voluntary contraction.

Differences in the recruitment curves obtained with monopolar and bipolar electrode configurations in the quadriceps femoris

INTRODUCTION

We sought to verify whether the stimulation intensity at which M-wave amplitude reaches a plateau actually corresponds to full motor unit activation in monopolar and bipolar configurations.

METHODS

M-waves and twitches were evoked using femoral nerve stimulation of gradually increasing intensity in 21 subjects. Recruitment curves corresponding to the amplitude of the first phase (AmpliFIRST ) and peak-to-peak amplitude (AmpliPP ) of the M-wave were obtained in the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and rectus femoris in monopolar and bipolar configurations.

RESULTS

In all muscles, bipolar M-waves and twitches reached plateau at a significantly lower stimulus intensity compared with monopolar M-waves (P < 0.05). The different behavior of monopolar and bipolar M-waves with stimulus intensity was found for both AmpliFIRST and AmpliPP .

CONCLUSIONS

In a bipolar configuration, the stimulus intensity at which M-waves plateau should be increased by at least 10%-20% to achieve complete motor unit recruitment. Muscle Nerve 54: 118-131, 2016.

Wide-pulse-high-frequency neuromuscular electrical stimulation in cerebral palsy

OBJECTIVE

The present study assesses whether wide-pulse-high-frequency (WPHF) neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) could result in extra-force production in cerebral palsy (CP) patients as previously observed in healthy individuals.

METHODS

Ten CP and 10 age- and sex-matched control participants underwent plantar flexors NMES. Two to three 10-s WPHF (frequency: 100 Hz, pulse duration: 1 ms) and conventional (CONV, frequency 25 Hz, pulse duration: 50 μs) trains as well as two to three burst-like stimulation trains (2s at 25 Hz, 2s at 100 Hz, 2s at 25 Hz; pulse duration: 1 ms) were evoked. Resting soleus and gastrocnemii maximal H-reflex amplitude (Hmax) was normalized by maximal M-wave amplitude (Mmax) to quantify α-motoneuron modulation.

RESULTS

Similar Hmax/Mmax ratio was found in CP and control participants. Extra-force generation was observed both in CP (+18 ± 74%) and control individuals (+94 ± 124%) during WPHF (p<0.05). Similar extra-forces were found during burst-like stimulations in both groups (+108 ± 110% in CP and +65 ± 85% in controls, p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

Although the mechanisms underlying extra-force production may differ between WPHF and burst-like NMES, similar increases were observed in patients with CP and healthy controls.

SIGNIFICANCE

Development of extra-forces in response to WPHF NMES evoked at low stimulation intensity might open new possibilities in neuromuscular rehabilitation.
