Abstract
Maternal proline (Pro) supplementation enhances fetal survival and placental development in mice. However, the effect of Pro on fetal and placental development in gilts remains to be investigated, particularly in the context of obesity-induced impaired pregnancy. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary Pro on fetal and placental development in obese gilts. Exp.1: On day 60 of gestation, 48 gilts with similar delivery times were selected and followed up until delivery to determine the relationship between maternal obesity, litter performance, and Pro abundance in term placentae. The results showed that impaired reproductive performance was associated with body condition parameters and inadequate placental Pro availability of gilts. Exp. 2: A total of 114 gilts were then used in a 2 × 3 factorial design to investigate the interaction between body condition (factor I: normal or obese gilts) and dietary Pro levels (factor II: low [0.89%, L-Pro], medium [1.39%, M-Pro], and high [1.89%, H-Pro]) on farrowing performance and placental angiogenesis. This resulted in six treatment combinations: normal-L-Pro, obese-L-Pro, normal-M-Pro, obese-M-Pro, normal-H-Pro, and obese-H-Pro. The effective number of replicates per group was 17, 21, 19, 21, 18, and 18, respectively (1 gilt per replicate). The results showed that increasing Pro intake increased piglet birth weight (P = 0.001), litter weight (P < 0.001), placental efficiency (P = 0.036) and placental vascular density (P < 0.001), and decreased the number of mummified fetuses (P = 0.001), the rate of low-birth-weight piglets (P = 0.005), and the rate of invalid piglets (P = 0.029). Interaction effects were observed between body condition and dietary Pro levels on piglet birth weight (P = 0.046), within-litter birth weight variation (P = 0.012), and placental vascular density (P = 0.007). Moreover, the beneficial effect of Pro on farrowing performance may be related to the improvement of sirtuin 1-superoxide dismutase 2-mitochondrial reactive oxygen species axis homeostasis and angiogenesis in the placenta. Our results suggest that gestation diets need to provide adequate Pro to meet the needs of fetal and placental development, particularly in obese gilts.

Abstract
Modern research in nutrition science is transitioning from classical methodologies to advanced analytical strategies, in which Raman spectroscopy plays a crucial role. Raman spectroscopy and its derived techniques are gaining recognition in nutrition science for their features, such as high-speed, non-destructive analysis, label-free multiple detection and high sensitivity. Raman-enhancing techniques have further improved the sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy and widely extended its detection and imaging applications in nutrient analysis, as well as in ancillary tasks for nutrition research, such as nutrient status evaluation, nutrient interaction and metabolism studies. Further development of Raman-based analytical approaches lies in the improvement of instruments with higher precision, as well as the incorporation of other analytical techniques and advanced data analysis tools. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the application of nanoscience and nanotechnology, with a specific focus on Raman technology, in the field of food and nutrition science research. Instead of delving into the quantitative or qualitative detection capabilities of Raman technology, we highlight the remarkable food analysis and nutrition research methods established by this technology. Generally, this review introduces the characteristics and applications of Raman technology in nutrition analysis and discusses the limitations and future prospects of Raman spectroscopy for nutrition monitoring.

Abstract
Compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) is widely used in ecological studies to analyze food-webs and is gaining use in archaeology for investigating past diets. However, its use in reconstructing breastfeeding and weaning practices is not fully understood. This study evaluates the efficacy of stable carbon isotope analysis of amino acids in early life diet reconstruction by analyzing keratin from fingernail samples of three mother-infant pairs during late gestation and early postpartum periods. Our results show that stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) of glycine, and to a lesser extent glutamate, effectively trace the onset of exclusive breastfeeding and the end of weaning in infants. We propose that glycine's 'conditionally essential' metabolic pathway during infancy allows it to reflect maternal glycine δ13C, indicating breastmilk consumption. Subtle changes in glutamate δ13C likely result from its 'non-essential' status. Additionally, δ13C values of glycine and glutamate indicate maternal physiological and pathological stress due to catabolic effects such as gluconeogenesis. These findings have significant implications for ecological and archaeological research using CSIA-AA for dietary reconstructions. They highlight the need to understand how metabolic pathways affecting δ13C of amino acids may change over an individual's lifespan or be altered due to various forms of stress.

Abstract
An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to assess the impact of replacing fish meal (FM) with rubber seed cake (RSC) on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity of the gut, antioxidant capacity and protein metabolism-related parameters of plasma and liver in juvenile Asian red-tailed catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides) with an average body weight of 3.21 g. Four isonitrogenous (41.08 ± 0.17) and isolipidic (10.07 ± 0.11) diets were formulated, incorporating RSC at a level of 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% (w/w) to progressively replace FM. Dietary inclusion of 15-30% RSC did not significantly affect growth performance (p > 0.05). However, the replacement of FM with RSC resulted in linear reductions in intestinal trypsin and amylase activities, with a significant reduction in intestinal amylase activity observed at the 45% RSC inclusion level. Dietary inclusion of 30-45% RSC decreased plasma glutamate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, but increased plasma adenosine monophosphate deaminase and hepatic γ-glutamyltransferase activities. This may indicate that the high substitution of FM by RSC may affect the homeostasis of amino acid metabolism. Dietary inclusion of 15% RSC did not affect serum and hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities; however, dietary inclusion of 45% RSC significantly increased plasma malondialdehyde level, but decreased catalase activity. Furthermore, dietary inclusion of 30-45% RSC significantly increased hepatic lactate dehydrogenase activity. These results demonstrated that replacing a portion of FM with RSC is feasible, and dietary inclusion of 15% RSC did not have significant adverse effects on growth performance, digestive function and antioxidant capacity of H. wyckioides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, characterized by degenerative skeletal muscle loss, is increasingly linked to poor surgical outcomes. Glutamine, an immune-modulating formula, may stimulate muscle protein synthesis and inhibit degradation. We used the psoas major muscle area (PMMA) at the third lumbar vertebra, normalized for height (PMMA index), as a skeletal muscle indicator. This study investigates whether perioperative glutamine supplementation mitigates psoas muscle atrophy. METHODS We enrolled gastric adenocarcinoma (GA) patients undergoing gastrectomy. Computed tomography assessed the psoas muscle short axis. Muscle atrophy was estimated by changes between preoperative and three-month post-gastrectomy scans. Perioperative glutamine supplementation (PGS) comprised five-day parenteral plus one-month oral use. Propensity score matching minimized potential bias. A linear regression model predicted the association. RESULTS Of 516 patients analyzed (2016-2019), 100 (19.4%) received PGS. After propensity score matching, each group contained 97 cases. The PGS group showed a significantly higher median PMMA index change than the non-PGS group (0.3 vs. -0.3 cm2/m2, p = 0.004). Multivariate analysis revealed that PGS was significantly associated with increased PMMA index (coefficient = 0.60; 95% CI: 0.19-1.01; p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS PGS may help restore psoas muscle atrophy in GA patients undergoing gastrectomy. The underlying mechanisms likely relate to glutamine's role in protein metabolism and immune function. Further studies are needed to elucidate these mechanisms fully.

Abstract
Glutamine, one of the most abundant amino acids in the body, has been shown to exert various beneficial effects in pigs. However, knowledge regarding the role of dietary glutamine in low-protein diet-fed piglets remains scarce. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of different levels of L-glutamine on growth performance, serum biochemistry parameters, redox status, amino acids, and fecal microbiota in low-protein diet-fed piglets. A total of 128 healthy crossbred piglets (Landrace × Yorkshire) were randomly allocated into 4 groups of 4 replicate pens, with 8 piglets per pen. Piglets in the 4 groups were fed with corn and soybean meal-based low-protein diets (crude protein level, 17%) that contained 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% L-glutamine, respectively, for 28 d. Pigs administered 1% L-glutamine had greater body weight on d 28 and average daily gain (ADG, P < 0.01), whereas a lower feed to gain ratio (F:G) from d 1 to 28 (P < 0.01), compared to the other three groups. Besides, lower body weight on d 14 and 28, ADG, average daily feed intake, and higher F:G from d 15 to 28 and d 1 to 28 were observed in response to 2% and 3% L-glutamine treatments than 0% and 1% L-glutamine treatments (P < 0.01). Moreover, 1% L-glutamine reduced serum glucose, malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide concentrations and inhibited aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, myeloperoxidase activities in low-protein diet-fed piglets on d 14, with concomitantly upregulated catalase, total superoxide dismutase activities and glutathione level (P < 0.05). However, dietary 3% L-glutamine enhanced blood urea nitrogen content in pigs on d 14 (P < 0.05). Further investigation revealed that 1% L-glutamine upregulated the serum glutamine, lysine, methionine, tyrosine, and reduced plasma valine content (P < 0.05). Additionally, 1% L-glutamine upregulated the abundance of p_75_a5, Clostridium, Lactobacillus, Prevotellaceae_Prevotella, and Gemmiger in the stool of piglets on d 14, with the Streptococcus level being concomitantly reduced (P < 0.05). Collectively, dietary 1% L-glutamine enhances the growth performance and improves serum physiochemical parameters and antioxidative capacity in low-protein diet-fed piglets at an early age, which are associated with an increased synthesis of glutathione by modulating amino acid levels, and the optimization of gut microbiota.

Abstract
To avoid a high body protein mobilization in modern lean sows during lactation, an adequate dietary amino acid (AA) supply and an efficient AA utilization are crucial. This study evaluated the effects of dietary CP and in vitro protein digestion kinetics on changes in sow body condition, litter weight gain, milk composition, blood metabolites, protein utilization efficiency and subsequent reproductive performance. We hypothesized that a slower digestion of dietary protein would improve AA availability and utilization. In total, 110 multiparous sows were fed one of four lactation diets in a 2 × 2 factorial design, with two CP concentrations: 140 g/kg vs 180 g/kg, and two protein digestion kinetics, expressed as a percentage of slow protein (in vitro degradation between 30 and 240 min): 8 vs 16% of total protein. Feeding sows the high CP diets reduced sow weight loss (Δ = 7.6 kg, P < 0.01), estimated body fat loss (Δ = 2.6 kg, P = 0.02), and estimated body protein loss (Δ = 1.0 kg, P = 0.08), but only at a high percentage of slow protein. A higher percentage of slow protein increased litter weight gain throughout lactation (Δ = 2.6 kg, P = 0.04) regardless of CP concentrations, whereas a higher CP only increased litter weight gain during week 3 of lactation (Δ = 1.2 kg, P = 0.01). On Day 15 postfarrowing, serial blood samples were taken from a subsample of sows fed with the high CP diets. In these sows, a high percentage of slow protein resulted in higher plasma AA concentrations at 150 and 180 min after feeding (Δ = 0.89, P = 0.02, Δ = 0.78, P = 0.03, mmol/L, respectively) and lower increases in urea at 90 and 120 min after feeding (Δ = 0.67, P = 0.04, Δ = 0.70, P = 0.03, mmol/L, respectively). The higher dietary CP concentration increased total nitrogen loss to the environment (Δ = 604 g, P < 0.01) with a reduction of protein efficiency (Δ = 14.8%, P < 0.01). In the next farrowing, a higher percentage of slow protein increased subsequent liveborn litter size (Δ = 0.7, P < 0.05). In conclusion, feeding sows with a high dietary CP concentration alleviated maternal weight loss during lactation when the dietary protein digestion rate was slower, but lowered protein efficiency. A slower protein digestion improved litter weight gain, possibly by reducing AA oxidation and improving plasma AA availability, thus, improving protein efficiency.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This narrative review will discuss how the intake of specific protein sources (animal and vegetable) providing specific amino acids can modulate the gut microbiota composition and generate toxins. A better understanding of these interactions could lead to more appropriate dietary recommendations to improve gut health and mitigate the risk of complications promoted by the toxic metabolites formed by the gut microbiota. RECENT FINDINGS Gut microbiota is vital in maintaining human health by influencing immune function and key metabolic pathways. Under unfavorable conditions, the gut microbiota can produce excess toxins, which contribute to inflammation and the breakdown of the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Genetic and environmental factors influence gut microbiota diversity, with diet playing a crucial role. Emerging evidence indicates that the gut microbiota significantly metabolizes amino acids from dietary proteins, producing various metabolites with beneficial and harmful effects. Amino acids such as choline, betaine, l-carnitine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan can increase the production of uremic toxins when metabolized by intestinal bacteria. The type of food source that provides these amino acids affects the production of toxins. Plant-based diets and dietary fiber are associated with lower toxin formation than animal-based diets due to the high amino acid precursors in animal proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low crude protein (CP) formulations with supplemental amino acids (AA) are used to enhance intestinal health, reduce costs, minimize environmental impact, and maintain growth performance of pigs. However, extensive reduction of dietary CP can compromise growth performance due to limited synthesis of non-essential AA and limited availability of bioactive compounds from protein supplements even when AA requirements are met. Moreover, implementing a low CP formulation can increase the net energy (NE) content in feeds causing excessive fat deposition. Additional supplementation of functional AA, coupled with low CP formulation could further enhance intestinal health and glucose metabolism, improving nitrogen utilization, and growth performance. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of low CP formulations with supplemental AA on the intestinal health and growth performance of growing-finishing pigs. METHODS In Exp. 1, 90 pigs (19.7 ± 1.1 kg, 45 barrows and 45 gilts) were assigned to 3 treatments: CON (18.0% CP, supplementing Lys, Met, and Thr), LCP (16.0% CP, supplementing Lys, Met, Thr, Trp, and Val), and LCPT (16.1% CP, LCP + 0.05% SID Trp). In Exp. 2, 72 pigs (34.2 ± 4.2 kg BW) were assigned to 3 treatments: CON (17.7% CP, meeting the requirements of Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp); LCP (15.0% CP, meeting Lys, Thr, Trp, Met, Val, Ile, and Phe); and VLCP (12.8% CP, meeting Lys, Thr, Trp, Met, Val, Ile, Phe, His, and Leu). In Exp. 3, 72 pigs (54.1 ± 5.9 kg BW) were assigned to 3 treatments and fed experimental diets for 3 phases (grower 2, finishing 1, and finishing 2). Treatments were CON (18.0%, 13.8%, 12.7% CP for 3 phases; meeting Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp); LCP (13.5%, 11.4%, 10.4% CP for 3 phases; meeting Lys, Thr, Trp, Met, Val, Ile, and Phe); and LCPG (14.1%, 12.8%, 11.1% CP for 3 phases; LCP + Glu to match SID Glu with CON). All diets had 2.6 Mcal/kg NE. RESULTS In Exp. 1, overall, the growth performance did not differ among treatments. The LCPT increased (P < 0.05) Claudin-1 expression in the duodenum and jejunum. The LCP and LCPT increased (P < 0.05) CAT-1, 4F2hc, and B0AT expressions in the jejunum. In Exp. 2, overall, the VLCP reduced (P < 0.05) G:F and BUN. The LCP and VLCP increased (P < 0.05) the backfat thickness (BFT). In Exp. 3, overall, growth performance and BFT did not differ among treatments. The LCPG reduced (P < 0.05) BUN, whereas increased the insulin in plasma. The LCP and LCPG reduced (P < 0.05) the abundance of Streptococcaceae, whereas the LCP reduced (P < 0.05) Erysipelotrichaceae, and the alpha diversity. CONCLUSIONS When implementing low CP formulation, CP can be reduced by supplementation of Lys, Thr, Met, Trp, Val, and Ile without affecting the growth performance of growing-finishing pigs when NE is adjusted to avoid increased fat deposition. Supplementation of Trp above the requirement or supplementation of Glu in low CP formulation seems to benefit intestinal health as well as improved nitrogen utilization and glucose metabolism.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to compare the fecal metabolome in post pull-through HD with and without HAEC patients and healthy young children using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. METHODS Fresh fecal samples were collected from children under 5 years of age in both post-pull-through HD patients and healthy Thai children. A total of 20 fecal samples were then analyzed using NMR spectroscopy. RESULTS Thirty-four metabolites identified among HD and healthy children younger than 5 years were compared. HD samples demonstrated a significant decrease in acetoin, phenylacetylglutamine, and N-acetylornithine (corrected p value = 0.01, 0.04, and 0.004, respectively). Succinate and xylose significantly decreased in HD with HAEC group compared to HD without HAEC group (corrected p value = 0.04 and 0.02, respectively). Moreover, glutamine and glutamate metabolism, and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism were the significant pathways involved, with pathway impact 0.42 and 0.50, respectively (corrected p value = 0.02 and 0.04, respectively). CONCLUSION Differences in class, quantity, and metabolism of protein and other metabolites in young children with HD after pull-through operation were identified. Most of the associated metabolic pathways were correlated with the amino acids metabolism, which is required to maintain intestinal integrity and function.

Abstract
The present study was to explore the Ile requirement of piglets fed 18% crude protein (CP) diets. Two hundred and fifty 28-day-old Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire piglets (8.37 ± 1.92 kg) were randomly divided into 5 dietary treatments (10 piglets per replicate, 5 barrows and 5 gilts per replicate) with 45%, 50%, 55%, 60%, 65% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Ile-to-Lys ratios, and the SID Lys was formulated to 1.19%. The experimental design consisted of two phases (d 1 to 14 and d 15 to 28). Results showed that average daily gain (ADG) had a tendency to quadratically increase as the SID Ile-to-Lys ratio increased (P = 0.09), and the optimum SID Ile-to-Lys ratios required to maximize ADG were 48.33% and 54.63% for broken-line linear model and quadratic polynomial model, respectively. Different SID Ile-to-Lys ratios had no significant effects on average daily feed intake and gain-to-feed ratio. Dry matter (P < 0.01), CP (P = 0.01), ether extract (P = 0.04), gross energy (P < 0.01) and organic matter (P < 0.01) digestibility increased quadratically. Serum total cholesterol levels decreased linearly (P = 0.01) and quadratically (P < 0.01); aspartate aminotransferase (P < 0.01), interleukin-1β (P = 0.01), and tumor necrosis factor-α (P < 0.01) levels decreased quadratically; immunoglobulin G (P = 0.03) and immunoglobulin M (P = 0.01) concentrations increased quadratically. Serum Ser levels decreased linearly (P < 0.01) and quadratically (P = 0.01); Glu (P = 0.02), Arg (P = 0.05), and Thr (P = 0.03) levels decreased quadratically; Gly (P < 0.01) and Leu (P = 0.01) levels decreased linearly; Ile (P < 0.01) concentration increased linearly. Duodenal villus height (P < 0.01) and villus height to crypt depth ratio (P < 0.01) increased quadratically. The deficiency or excess of Ile decreased short chain fatty acid-producing bacteria abundance and increased pathogenic bacteria abundance. Overall, taking ADG as the effect index, the optimum SID Ile-to-Lys ratios of piglets offered 18% CP diets were 48.33% and 54.63% based on two different statistical models, respectively, and the deficiency or excess of lle negatively affected piglet growth rates and health status.

Abstract
This review focuses on the question of metabolic syndrome (MS) being a complex, but essentially monophyletic, galaxy of associated diseases/disorders, or just a syndrome of related but rather independent pathologies. The human nature of MS (its exceptionality in Nature and its close interdependence with human action and evolution) is presented and discussed. The text also describes the close interdependence of its components, with special emphasis on the description of their interrelations (including their syndromic development and recruitment), as well as their consequences upon energy handling and partition. The main theories on MS's origin and development are presented in relation to hepatic steatosis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, but encompass most of the MS components described so far. The differential effects of sex and its biological consequences are considered under the light of human social needs and evolution, which are also directly related to MS epidemiology, severity, and relations with senescence. The triggering and maintenance factors of MS are discussed, with especial emphasis on inflammation, a complex process affecting different levels of organization and which is a critical element for MS development. Inflammation is also related to the operation of connective tissue (including the adipose organ) and the widely studied and acknowledged influence of diet. The role of diet composition, including the transcendence of the anaplerotic maintenance of the Krebs cycle from dietary amino acid supply (and its timing), is developed in the context of testosterone and β-estradiol control of the insulin-glycaemia hepatic core system of carbohydrate-triacylglycerol energy handling. The high probability of MS acting as a unique complex biological control system (essentially monophyletic) is presented, together with additional perspectives/considerations on the treatment of this 'very' human disease.

Abstract
Nutrition serves as the cornerstone of an athlete's life, exerting a profound impact on their performance and overall well-being. To unlock their full potential, athletes must adhere to a well-balanced diet tailored to their specific nutritional needs. This approach not only enables them to achieve optimal performance levels but also facilitates efficient recovery and reduces the risk of injuries. In addition to maintaining a balanced diet, many athletes also embrace the use of nutritional supplements to complement their dietary intake and support their training goals. These supplements cover a wide range of options, addressing nutrient deficiencies, enhancing recovery, promoting muscle synthesis, boosting energy levels, and optimizing performance in their respective sports or activities. The primary objective of this narrative review is to comprehensively explore the diverse nutritional requirements that athletes face to optimize their performance, recovery, and overall well-being. Through a thorough literature search across databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, we aim to provide evidence-based recommendations and shed light on the optimal daily intakes of carbohydrates, protein, fats, micronutrients, hydration strategies, ergogenic aids, nutritional supplements, and nutrient timing. Furthermore, our aim is to dispel common misconceptions regarding sports nutrition, providing athletes with accurate information and empowering them in their nutritional choices.

Small biomolecules play a critical role in the fundamental processes that sustain life and are essential for the proper functioning of the human body. The detection of small biomolecules has garnered significant interest in various fields, including disease diagnosis and medicine. Electrochemical techniques are commonly employed in the detection of critical biomolecules through the principle of redox reactions. It is also a very convenient, cheap, simple, fast, and accurate measurement method in analytical chemistry. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a unique type of metal-organic framework (MOF) composed of porous crystals with extended three-dimensional structures. These frameworks are made up of metal ions and imidazolate linkers, which form a highly porous and stable structure. In addition to their many advantages in other applications, ZIFs have emerged as promising candidates for electrochemical sensors. Their large surface area, pore diameter, and stability make them ideal for use in sensing applications, particularly in the detection of small molecules and ions. This review summarizes the critical role of small biomolecules in the human body, the standard features of electrochemical analysis, and the utilization of various types of ZIF materials (including carbon composites, metal-based composites, ZIF polymer materials, and ZIF-derived materials) for the detection of important small biomolecules in human body fluids. Lastly, we provide an overview of the current status, challenges, and future outlook for research on ZIF materials.

Abstract
Comparative animal models generate fundamental scientific knowledge of immune responses. However, these studies typically are conducted in mammals because of their biochemical and physiological similarity to humans. Presently, there has been an interest in using teleost fish models to study intestinal immunology, particularly intestinal mucosa immune response. Instead of targeting the pathogen itself, a preferred approach for managing fish health is through nutrient supplementation, as it is noninvasive and less labor intensive than vaccine administrations while still modulating immune properties. Amino acids (AAs) regulate metabolic processes, oxidant-antioxidant balance, and physiological requirements to improve immune response. Thus, nutritionists can develop sustainable aquafeeds through AA supplementation to promote specific immune responses, including the intestinal mucosa immune system. We propose the use of dietary supplementation with functional AAs to improve immune response by discussing teleost fish immunology within the intestine and explore how oxidative burst is used as an immune defense mechanism. We evaluate immune components and immune responses in the intestine that use oxidant-antioxidant balance through potential selection of AAs and their metabolites to improve mucosal immune capacity and gut integrity. AAs are effective modulators of teleost gut immunity through oxidant-antioxidant balance. To incorporate nutrition as an immunoregulatory means in teleost, we must obtain more tools including genomic, proteomic, nutrition, immunology, and macrobiotic and metabonomic analyses, so that future studies can provide a more holistic understanding of the mucosal immune system in fish.

Abstract
Normally, proper fermentation can be an efficient and widely used method to improve feed quality in animal rearing; however, the studies on crustaceans, especially Eriocheir sinensis, remain limited. This study aimed to investigate whether feed fermentation could meliorate dietary nutritional value and benefit E. sinensis rearing. First, non-fermented feed (NFD) and fermented feed (FD) were produced and assessed, respectively. Then, the "Y" maze feed choice behavior test (180 times; 30 times, 6 rounds) was conducted to assess the attractiveness of these 2 feeds for crabs. Finally, a total of 80 crabs (44.10 ± 0.80 g) were randomly assigned into 2 groups with 4 replicates, and fed the experimental diets for 8 weeks to evaluate the effects of each feed on growth, antioxidant capacity, meat flavor, and intestinal microbiota. In this study, FD showed higher levels of crude protein (P < 0.01), soluble protein (P < 0.01), amino acids (P < 0.05), lactic acid (P < 0.001), and lower levels of crude fiber (P < 0.05) and antinutritional factors (agglutinin, trypsin inhibitor, glycinin, and β-conglycinin) (P < 0.001) than NFD. Additionally, FD was more attractive to crabs than NFD (P < 0.01) and it stimulated the appetite of crabs more than NFD (P < 0.05). The growth performance, feed efficiency, and digestive enzyme activity of FD-fed crabs were significantly higher than those of NFD-fed crabs (P < 0.05). The electronic sensory measurements and free amino acid profiles revealed that the FD diet had positive impacts on the meat flavor of crabs, particularly in "sweet" and "umami" tastes. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of FD-fed crabs was significantly higher than that of NFD-fed crabs (P < 0.05). Fermented feed also affected the diversity and composition of intestinal microflora. The functional prediction of microbial communities showed that crabs fed FD had a better microecological environment in the intestine. In conclusion, the fermentation of aquafeed could be an effective approach to enhance feed quality and therefore benefit E. sinensis rearing.

Abstract
Standard amino acids have an asymmetric α-carbon atom to which -COOH, -NH2, -H, and -R groups are bonded. Among them, glycine is the simplest (R = -H) with no asymmetric carbon, and other natural amino acids are C-substituted of glycine. Here, we have designed and made a green synthesis of some new N-substituted glycine derivatives with R-(NH)CH2-COOH formula, where R is flexible and hydrophobic with different chain lengths and benches of the type propyl, butyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, pentyl, isopentyl, tert-pentyl, hexyl, 2-aminoheptyl, and octyl. These glycine derivatives were characterized by recording their melting points and FT-IR, mass, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectra. DFT studies revealed that 2-aminoheptyl glycine had the highest electronegativity value and can thus act as a good bidentate ligand for the metal centers. ADME comparative results and bioavailability radars indicated that both octyl- and 2-aminoheptyl glycine had the most lipophilicity, making them good agents in cell passing. Furthermore, lipophilicity determination showed that octyl glycine was the best and propylgly was more soluble than others. Based on solubility, lipophilicity, and dipole moment values, propyl- and 2-aminoheptyl-glycine were considered for bio-macromolecular interaction studies. Thus, the interaction of these two agents with DNA and HSA was studied using absorption spectroscopy and circular dichroism techniques. Due to the presence of the R-amine group, they can interact with the DNA by H-binding and hydrophobicity, while electrostatic mode could not be ruled out. Meanwhile, molecular docking studies revealed that octyl- and 2-aminoheptyl glycine had the highest negative docking energy, which reflects their higher tendency to interact with DNA. The DNA binding affinity of two candidate AAs was determined by viscosity measurement and fluorescence emission recording, which confirms that groove binding occurs. Also, the toxicity of these synthesized amino acid derivates was tested against the human foreskin fibroblast (HFF) cell line. They showed IC50 values within the range of 127-344 μM after 48 h with the highest toxicity for 2-aminoheptyl glycine.

Abstract
Amplexus is a type of mating behavior among toads that is essential for successful external fertilization. Most studies have primarily focused on the behavioral diversity of amplexus, and less is known regarding the metabolic changes occurring in amplectant males. The aim of this study was to compare the metabolic profiles of amplectant Asiatic toad (Bufo gargarizans) males in the breeding period (BP group) and the resting males in the non-breeding period (NP group). A metabolomic analysis was conducted on the flexor carpi radialis (FCR), an essential forelimb muscle responsible for clasping during courtship. A total of 66 differential metabolites were identified between the BP and NP groups, including 18 amino acids, 12 carbohydrates, and 8 lipids, and they were classified into 9 categories. Among these differential metabolites, 13 amino acids, 11 carbohydrates, and 7 lipids were significantly upregulated in the BP group compared to the NP group. In addition, a KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) enrichment analysis identified 17 significant metabolic pathways, including ABC transporters, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, arginine biosynthesis, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, and fructose and mannose metabolism. These results suggest that amplectant male toads are metabolically more active than those during the non-breeding period, and this metabolic adaptation increases the likelihood of reproductive success.

Abstract
In search of the candidate for animal feed and clean energy, a new vision of algal biorefinery was firstly proposed to coproduce amino acids and biohythane via hydrothermal treatment and two-stage anaerobic fermentation. This study focused on the comprehensive analysis of amino acids recovered from Chlorella sp. and the subsequent biohythane production from microalgal residues. The content and recovery rate of amino acids were in the range of 2.07-27.62 g/100 g and 3.65 %-48.66 % with increasing temperature due to more cell wall disruptions. Furthermore, it was rich in essential amino acids for livestock, including leucine, arginine, isoleucine, valine and phenylalanine. A comparable hydrogen production (9 mL/g volatile solids (VS)) was reached at 70 °C and 90 °C, while it reduced to 5.84 mL/gVS at 150 °C. The group at 70 °C got the maximum methane generation of 311.9 mL/gVS, which was 16.67 %, 24.94 %, 38.38 % and 46.49 % higher than that of other groups. Microalgal residues at lower temperature contained more organics, which was the reason for the better biohythane production. The coproduction of amino acids and biohythane at 130 °C was favorable, which led to 43.71 % amino acids recovery and 93.82 mL biohythane production from per gVS of Chlorella sp. The improved microalgal biorefinery could provide an alternative way to mitigate the crisis of food and energy, but animal experimentations and techno-economic assessments should be considered for further study.

Abstract
The dairy industry faces a daunting challenge in managing acid whey (AW), a byproduct of Greek yogurt manufacturing that is costly to dispose of and challenging to incorporate into other food products. However, recent studies have demonstrated that AW can be transformed into a viable white powder by encapsulating it in millet flour. Recently, concerns over the safety of the commonly used food-grade whitener titanium dioxide (TiO2) have arisen, and the search for an alternative food-whitening agent has become essential. This study evaluated the color attribute, proximate composition, sugar profile, amino acid profile, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and antinutrient content of the novel acid whey millet (AWM) powder. The L* values of the AWM powders were significantly higher than TiO2 and the rest of the millet formulations. The crude protein content in the AWM powders was significantly (p < 0.05) lower when compared to the crude protein content in millet flours. AWM powders had higher lactose levels and retained all major amino acids after spray drying. Macrominerals (P, K, Ca, and Na) and microminerals (Zn and Cu) significantly increased in the AWM powder, while tannin content was reduced in AWM powders. These findings suggest that AWM powder is a white powder that contains a wide range of components with high nutritional value that could be readily incorporated into various applications. In summary, this study provides a valuable contribution to the dairy industry by highlighting the potential of AWM powders as a natural alternative food whitening agent to TiO2.

Abstract
Data from non-ruminants indicate that amino acid (AA) transport into cells can regulate mTOR pathway activity and protein synthesis. Whether mTOR is expressed in the ruminant gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and how it may be related to AA transporters and the AA concentrations in the tissue is unknown. Ruminal papillae and the epithelia of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum collected at slaughter from eight clinically healthy Holstein in mid-lactation were used. Metabolites and RNA were extracted from tissue for liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and RT-qPCR analysis. The glycine and asparagine concentrations in the rumen were greater than those in the intestine (p < 0.05), but the concentrations of other AAs were greater in the small intestine than those in the rumen. Among the 20 AAs identified, the concentrations of glutamate, alanine, and glycine were the greatest. The mRNA abundances of AKT1 and MTOR were greater in the small intestine than those in the rumen (p < 0.05). Similarly, the SLC1A1, SLC6A6, SLC7A8, SLC38A1, SLC38A7, and SLC43A2 mRNA abundances were greater (p < 0.05) in the small intestine than those in the rumen. The mRNA abundances of SLC1A5, SLC3A2, and SLC7A5 were greater in the rumen than those in the small intestine (p < 0.05). Overall, the present study provides fundamental data on the relationship between mTOR pathway components and the transport of AAs in different sections of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
The demand for plant-based meat analogs (PBMA) is on the rise as a strategy to sustain the food protein supply while mitigating environmental change. In addition to supplying essential amino acids and energy, food proteins are known sources of bioactive peptides. Whether protein in PBMA affords similar peptide profiles and bioactivities as real meat remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the gastrointestinal digestion fate of beef and PBMA proteins with a special focus on their potential as precursors of bioactive peptides. Results showed that PBMA protein showed inferior digestibility than that in beef. However, PBMA hydrolysates possessed a comparable amino acid profile to that of beef. A total of 37, 2420 and 2021 peptides were identified in the gastrointestinal digests of beef, Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat, respectively. The astonishingly fewer peptides identified from beef digest is probably due to the near-full digestion of beef proteins. Almost all peptides in Impossible Meat digest were from soy, whereas 81%, 14% and 5% of peptides in Beyond Meat digest were derived from pea, rice and mung proteins, respectively. Peptides in PBMA digests were predicted to exert a wide range of regulatory roles and were shown to have ACE inhibitory, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, supporting the potential of PBMA as a source of bioactive peptides.

Abstract
Obesity is a leading contributor to colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but the metabolic mechanisms linking obesity to CRC are not fully understood. We leveraged untargeted metabolomics data from two 1:1 matched, nested case-control studies for CRC, including 223 pairs from the US Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial and 190 pairs from a prospective Chinese cohort. We explored serum metabolites related to body mass index (BMI), constructed a metabolomic signature of obesity, and examined the association between the signature and CRC risk. In total, 72 of 278 named metabolites were correlated with BMI after multiple testing corrections (p FDR < 0.05). The metabolomic signature was calculated by including 39 metabolites that were independently associated with BMI. There was a linear positive association between the signature and CRC risk in both cohorts (p for linear < 0.05). Per 1-SD increment of the signature was associated with 38% (95% CI: 9-75%) and 28% (95% CI: 2-62%) higher risks of CRC in the US and Chinese cohorts, respectively. In conclusion, we identified a metabolomic signature for obesity and demonstrated the association between the signature and CRC risk. The findings offer new insights into the underlying mechanisms of CRC, which is critical for improved CRC prevention.

Abstract
SCOPE Proliferation and differentiation of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are crucial for functional restoration after injury, which can be regulated by nutritional molecules. Aspartate is implicated in maintaining intestinal barrier after injury, but underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, this study seeks to investigate if aspartate alleviates colonic epithelial damage by regulating ISC function, and to elucidate its mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice supplement with or without 1% L-aspartate are subjected to drinking water or 2.5% DSS to induce colitis. In this study, aspartate administration alleviates the severity of colitis, as indicated by reduced body weight loss, colon shortening, and inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in DSS-challenged mice. Additionally, aspartate promotes colonic epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation after DSS-induced damage in mice. Pretreatment with aspartate not only enhances ISC proliferation but also induces ISC differentiation toward enterocytes and goblet cells, which prevent TNF-α-induced colonoid damage. Mechanistically, aspartate ameliorates DSS/TNF-α-induced perturbation of mitochondrial metabolism and maintains mitochondrial dynamics in colonic epithelium and colonoids. Moreover, aspartate-mediated ISC proliferation and differentiation are primarily dependent on mitochondrial fusion rather than fission. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that aspartate promotes ISC proliferation and differentiation to alleviate colonic epithelial damage by regulation of mitochondrial metabolism and dynamics.

Abstract
Two water-soluble single-benzene-based chromophores, 2,5-di(azetidine-1-yl)-tereph- thalic acid (DAPA) and its disodium carboxylate (DAP-Na), were conveniently obtained. Both chromophores preserved moderate quantum yields in a wide range of polar and protonic solvents. Spectroscopic studies demonstrated that DAPA exhibited red luminescence as well as large Stokes shift (>200 nm) in aqueous solutions. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra illustrated quadrupolar DAPA usually involved the formation of an intramolecular charge transfer state. Its Frank−Condon state could be rapidly relaxed to a slight symmetry-breaking state upon light excitation following the solvent relaxation, then the slight charge separation may occur and the charge localization became partially asymmetrical in polar environments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results were supported well with the experimental measurements. Unique pH-dependent fluorescent properties endows the two chromophores with rapid, highly selective, and sensitive responses to the amino acids in aqueous media. In detail, DAPA served as a fluorescence turn-on probe with a detection limit (DL) of 0.50 μM for Arg and with that of 0.41 μM for Lys. In contrast, DAP-Na featured bright green luminescence and showed fluorescence turn-off responses to Asp and Glu with the DLs of 0.12 μM and 0.16 μM, respectively. Meanwhile, these two simple-structure probes exhibited strong anti-interference ability towards other natural amino acids and realized visual identification of specific analytes. The present work helps to understand the photophysic−structure relationship of these kinds of compounds and render their fluorescent detection applications.

Abstract
Whether proteins in meat analogues (MAs) have the ability to provide equivalent nutrition as those in animal meat remains unknown. Herein, a MA was produced by high-moisture extrusion using soy and wheat proteins. The physicochemical properties, in vitro digestion, and cellular uptake of the released peptides were systematically compared between the MA and the chicken breast (CB). The MA showed a higher hardness but a lower degree of texturization than the CB. After simulated digestion, soluble peptides in the MA had a higher molecular weight and higher hydrophobicity. No observable cytotoxicity or inflammatory response to Caco-2 cells was found for both MA and CB digests. The former exhibited less permeability of peptides across Caco-2 cells. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry found that the identified peptides in MA and CB digests contained 7-30 and 7-20 amino acid residues, respectively, and they became shorter after cellular transportation. The amino acid composition showed fewer essential and non-essential amino acids in the MA permeate than in the CB permeate.

Abstract
Ramie (Boehmeria nivea), which is rich in protein, fatty acid, vitamins and minerals, has become a potential alternative feed resource for poultry, and has attracted more and more attentions in nutrition research. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of dietary ramie at different concentrations on the production performance of the hens, and the quality, nutrient composition, and antioxidation of the eggs. A total of 432 34-week-old Lohmann commercial laying hens were divided into four groups, that were fed with corn-soybean meal-based control diet, control mixed with ramie at concentrations of 3, 6, or 9% separately for 8 weeks. Results showed that dietary ramie did not affect production performance. And egg yolk color gradually deepened as the inclusion levels of ramie increased. Ramie at tested concentration could significantly reduce the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p = 0.002) and 3% ramie supplementation significantly increased total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC) concentrations in egg yolk compared to the control group (p = 0.033). In addition, dietary supplementation with 6% ramie significantly reduced total cholesterol (T-CHO) content (p < 0.05) compared with controls. For egg nutrient composition, compared with the control group, the addition of 6% ramie significantly increased (p < 0.05) total omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) and phenylalanine (Phe) in yolk. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of 6% ramie was most effective in improving the color, antioxidative capability, and reducing T-CHO contents of the egg yolks without any negative impacts on the production performance of the hens.

Abstract
The chemical and microbiological characteristics of filets of Spaurus aurata L. specimens fed with diets containing a Hermetia illucens meal (HIM) at the 25, 35, and 50%, as a partial replacement for fish meal (FM) were evaluated. The diets, formulated to satisfy the nutritional needs of fish, were isoenergetic (22 MJ/kg gross energy), isonitrogenous (43 g/100 g, a.f.), and isolipidic (19 g/100 g, a.f.). Seventy-two specimens were randomly killed after 186 days of growing trials. Then, the filets were analyzed for chemical profile, fatty acids, amino acids, minerals, and microbial flora. Data were subjected to statistical analysis. No significant differences were observed in chemical composition. The sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) showed a similar content in the filets; eicosapentaenoic acid was similar in the filets of HIM0, HIM35%, and HIM50%, whereas docosahexaenoic acid was higher in filets of the HIM0 group. n3/n6 PUFA ratio and the sum of EPA + DHA showed a high value (p < 0.001) in filets of the group fed with FM. No significant difference was observed in thrombogenic index and hypocholesterolaemic/hypercholesterolaemic ratio in the groups; the atherogenic index showed a higher value (p = 0.001) in the HIM50% group. Indispensable amino acids showed some significant (p < 0.0001) differences in the groups; arginine and phenylalanine content was higher in the filets of fish fed with FM; isoleucine and valine content was higher in the filets of HIM50%; leucine, lysine and methionine content was lower in the filets of HIM35%; histidine content was lower in the filets of HIM25%; tryptophan content was lower in filets of the HIM50% group. EAA/NEAA ratio showed highest value in the filets of the group that received FM. The presence of HIM in the three diets kept chromium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, and nickel levels lower than those recommended by various authorities. Ca/P ratio showed a higher level (p < 0.0001) in the group fed with FM than those fed with diets containing HIM. The insect meal in the diets did not influence the microbiological profile of fish. Use of HIM as an unconventional feed ingredient in Sparus aurata diet looks promising, although the quality of filets may be affected.

Abstract
Amino acids (AAs) are required for syntheses of proteins and low-molecular-weight substances with enormous physiological importance. Since 1912, AAs have been classified as nutritionally essential amino acids (EAAs) or nonessential amino acids (NEAAs) for animals. EAAs are those AAs that are either not synthesized or insufficiently synthesized de novo in the organisms. It was assumed that all NEAAs (now known as AAs that are synthesizable in animal cells de novo [AASAs]) were formed sufficiently in animals and were not needed in diets. However, studies over the past three decades have shown that sufficient dietary AASAs (e.g. glutamine, glutamate, glycine, and proline) are necessary for the maximum growth and optimum health of pigs, chickens, and fish. Thus, the concept of "ideal protein" (protein with an optimal EAA pattern that precisely meets the physiological needs of animals), which was originally proposed in the 1950s but ignored AASAs, is not ideal in animal nutrition. Ideal diets must provide all physiologically and nutritionally essential AAs. Improved patterns of AAs in diets for swine and chickens as well as zoo and companion animals have been proposed in recent years. Animal-sourced feedstuffs supply abundant EAAs and AASAs (including glutamate, glutamine, glycine, proline, 4-hydroxyproline, and taurine) for diets of swine, poultry, fish, and crustaceans to improve their growth, development, reproduction, and health, while sustaining global animal production. Nutritionists should move beyond the "ideal protein" concept to consider optimum ratios and amounts of all proteinogenic AAs in diets for mammals, birds, and aquatic animals, and, in the case of carnivores, also taurine.

Abstract
AbstractBee pollen is one of the hive products that is of most interest today due to its multiple beneficial health properties, making it an increasingly popular food supplement. Bee pollen contains many bioactive compounds, such as fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, proteins, and amino acids, among others. In the present study, the free amino acid content was determined in bee pollen by using liquid chromatography coupled to a fluorescence detector. Sample treatment consisted of a solvent extraction of the free amino acids with ultrapure water and a further centrifugation of the extract, which was repeated twice. After that, it was necessary to perform a pre-column derivatization of the amino acids using a combination of two reagents (o-phthalaldehyde and 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate) prior to their separation in a Gemini® C18 reverse phase column in gradient elution mode. The analytical performance was evaluated, and several commercial bee pollen samples were analyzed. Significant differences in the free amino acid profile and concentration, which ranged between 19 and 192 mg/g, were observed depending on the botanical origin of the samples.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this umbrella review is to bring together the most recent reviews concerning the role of immunonutrients for male and female infertility. Methods Regarding immunonutrients and fertility, the authors have analyzed reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published between 2011 and June 2021. All reviews on animal or in vitro studies were excluded. Relevant keywords to term micronutrients were analyzed alone or in association with other terms such as “gamete competence,” “male OR female fertility,” “male OR female infertility,” “fertile, “folliculogenesis,” “spermatogenesis,” “immunomodulation,” “immune system,” “oxidative stress.” Results The primary research has included 108 results, and after screening by title, abstract. and not topic-related, 41 studies have been included by full texts. The results show the molecular mechanisms and the immunonutrients related impact on gamete formation, development. and competence. In particular, this review focused on arginine, glutamine, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, omega-3, selenium, and zinc. Conclusions Inflammation and oxidative stress significantly impact human reproduction. For this reason, immunonutrients may play an important role in the treatment of infertile patients. However, due to the lack of consistent clinical trials, their application is limited. Therefore, the development of clinical trials is necessary to define the correct supplementation, in case of deficiency.

Abstract
Ingested nutrients are proposed to control mammalian behavior by modulating the activity of hypothalamic orexin/hypocretin neurons (HONs). Previous in vitro studies showed that nutrients ubiquitous in mammalian diets, such as non-essential amino acids (AAs) and glucose, modulate HONs in distinct ways. Glucose inhibits HONs, whereas non-essential (but not essential) AAs activate HONs. The latter effect is of particular interest because its purpose is unknown. Here, we show that ingestion of a dietary-relevant mix of non-essential AAs activates HONs and shifts behavior from eating to exploration. These effects persisted despite ablation of a key neural gut → brain communication pathway, the cholecystokinin-sensitive vagal afferents. The behavioral shift induced by the ingested non-essential AAs was recapitulated by targeted HON optostimulation and abolished in mice lacking HONs. Furthermore, lick microstructure analysis indicated that intragastric non-essential AAs and HON optostimulation each reduce the size, but not the frequency, of consumption bouts, thus implicating food palatability modulation as a mechanism for the eating suppression. Collectively, these results suggest that a key purpose of HON activation by ingested, non-essential AAs is to suppress eating and re-initiate food seeking. We propose and discuss possible evolutionary advantages of this, such as optimizing the limited stomach capacity for ingestion of essential nutrients.

Abstract
The fertility of sows mainly depends on the embryo losses during gestation and the survival rate of the post-farrowing piglets. The selection of highly-prolific sows has been mainly focused on the selection of genotypes with high ovulatory quota. However, in the early- and post-implantation stages, the rate of embryo losses was increased with the increase of zygotes. Among the various factors, placental growth and development is the vital determinant for fetal survival, growth, and development. Despite the potential survival of fetuses with deficient placental development, their life-conditions and growth can be damaged by a process termed intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). The newborn piglets affected by IUGR are prone to increased morbidity and mortality rates; meanwhile, the growth, health and welfare of the surviving piglets will remain hampered by these conditions, with a tendency to exacerbate with age. Functional amino acids such as glycine, proline, and arginine continue to increase with the development of placenta, which are not only essential to placental growth (including vascular growth) and development, but can also be used as substrates for the production of glutathione, polyamines and nitric oxide to benefit placental function in many ways. However, the exact regulation mechanism of these amino acids in placental function has not yet been clarified. In this review, we provide evidence from literature and our own work for the role and mechanism of dietary functional amino acids during pregnancy in regulating the placental functional response to fetal loss and birth weight of piglets. This review will provide novel insights into the response of nutritionally nonessential amino acids (glycine and proline) to placental development as well as feasible strategies to enhance the fertility of sows.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the supplementation of glutamic acid (Glu) to reduced protein diets on the performance of weanling pigs. One hundred and eighty crossbred weanling pigs ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc, 21 d old) having similar body weight (BW) of 6.45 kg were randomly allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments (5 pigs per pen [2 barrows and 3 gilts]; 6 pens per treatment) based on BW and sex during a 6-week trial. Dietary treatments consisted of positive control (PC) diet formulated to have 226.9, 205.6, and 188.8 g crude protein (CP) during phases 1, 2, and 3, respectively, and negative control (NC) diets with 20 g CP reduction from PC diets and addition of Glu with increasing levels, resulting in the calculated Lys-to-Glu ratios of 1:2.25, 1:2.30.1:2.35, 1:2.40, and 1:2.45, designated as NC, NC1, NC2, NC3, and NC4, respectively. The BW of pigs receiving PC diet was higher (P < 0.05) than those receiving NC diet at d 7, 21 and 42. A higher (P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) from d 1 to 7, 8 to 21, 22 to 42 and during the overall experiment period was observed in pigs fed PC than NC diet. Pigs fed NC diets including the graded level of Glu linearly increased (P < 0.05) BW at d 42, ADG and gain-to-feed ratio (G:F) during the overall experimental period. In addition, trends in linear increase in BW (P = 0.056) at d 7 and ADG from d 1 to 7 and d 22 to 42 (linear effect, P = 0.081, P = 0.058 respectively) were observed. A tendency in the linear increment of NH3 (P = 0.082) at d 21 and linear reduction in methyl mercaptans (P = 0.054) emission at d 42 was observed in pigs fed NC diets supplemented with graded level of Glu. In conclusion, supplementing the reduced protein diet with Glu enhanced the growth performance in weanling pigs suggesting that supplementation of Glu can compensate the reduction of 2% CP in the basal diets.

Abstract
For terrestrial farm animals, intact protein sources like soybean meal have been the main ingredients providing the required amino acids (AA) to sustain life. However, in recent years, the availability of hydrolysed protein sources and free AA has led to the use of other forms of AA to feed farm animals. The advent of using these new forms is especially important to reduce the negative environmental impacts of animal production because these new forms allow reducing the dietary crude protein content and provide more digestible materials. However, the form in which dietary AA are provided can have an effect on the dynamics of nutrient availability for protein deposition and tissue growth including the efficiency of nutrient utilization. In this literature review, the use of different forms of AA in animal diets is explored, and their differences in digestion and absorption rates are focused on. These differences affect the postprandial plasma appearance of AA, which can have metabolic consequences, like greater insulin response when free AA or hydrolysates instead of intact proteins are fed, which can have a profound effect on metabolism and growth performance. Nevertheless, the use and application of the different AA forms in animal diets are important to achieve a more sustainable and efficient animal production system in the future, as they allow for a more precise diet formulation and reduced negative environmental impact. It is, therefore, important to differentiate the physiological and metabolic effects of different forms of AA to maximize their nutritional value in animal diets.

Abstract
AIM: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional content and physicochemical aspect of the combination of eel and tempe flour.
METHODS: Samples of swamp eel and tempe flour were combined in a ratio of 1:1 (A), 1:2 (B), 1:3.5 (C), and 1 kilogram of Asian swamp eel meat without additional tempe (D), respectively. Homogenization was done using a sinmag planetary mixer. The sample analysis was performed at the SIG Laboratory (PT. Saraswanti Indo Genetech) on November 16, 2021. The samples were analyzed triple (triplicates). Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism version 9.3.0 for Mac OS. Variables were analyzed using multivariate ANOVA with 95% CI (0.05).
RESULTS: There was a significant difference between Samples A, B, C, and D for every proximate analysis parameter (p = 0.000) p < 0.05. The results showed a significant difference in the unsaturated fatty acid parameter between the groups (p < 0.001). Sample C has the highest B9 (folic acid) content compared to other samples (1258.53 ± 1.39 mcg/100 g) and a significant difference was found between samples (p < 0.0001).
CONCLUSION: Tempe flour enriched eel flour can act as a source of folate, due to its high folate content. Tempe flour enriched eel flour could be used as a flour mixture in any food products that require flour to increase folate content.

Abstract
Objective The beneficial effects of glycine were tested in piglets with diquat-induced hepatic injury. Methods Thirty-two piglets were assigned by a 2 × 2 factorial experimental design including glycine supplementation and diquat challenge. After 3 weeks of feeding with a basic diet or a 1% glycine supplemented diet, piglets were challenged with diquat or saline. After 1 week later, the piglets were slaughtered and samples were collected. Results Our results indicated that glycine alleviated diquat induced morphological hepatic injury, decreased the activities of plasma alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and glutamyl transpeptidase in the piglets under diquat challenge, and increased total antioxidant capacity and antioxidative enzyme activity significantly. Adding glycine enhanced the concentrations of hepatic adenosine triphosphate and adenosine diphosphate. Transmission electron microscope observation showed that diquat induced clear hepatocytes ferroptosis and its effect could be alleviated by glycine to a certain degree. Moreover, glycine significantly affected mRNA and protein expression of ferroptosis-related signals in the liver. Conclusion These results demonstrated that glycine attenuated liver damage via inhibiting ferroptosis.

Abstract
Aquatic animals have particularly high requirements for dietary amino acids (AAs) for health, survival, growth, development, and reproduction. These nutrients are usually provided from ingested proteins and may also be derived from supplemental crystalline AA. AAs are the building blocks of protein (a major component of tissue growth) and, therefore, are the determinants of the growth performance and feed efficiency of farmed fish. Because protein is generally the most expensive ingredient in aqua feeds, much attention has been directed to ensure that dietary protein feedstuff is of high quality and cost-effective for feeding fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic animals worldwide. Due to the rapid development of aquaculture worldwide and a limited source of fishmeal (the traditionally sole or primary source of AAs for aquatic animals), alternative protein sources must be identified to feed aquatic animals. Plant-sourced feedstuffs for aquatic animals include soybean meal, extruded soybean meal, fermented soybean meal, soybean protein concentrates, soybean protein isolates, leaf meal, hydrolyzed plant protein, wheat, wheat hydrolyzed protein, canola meal, cottonseed meal, peanut meal, sunflower meal, peas, rice, dried brewers grains, and dried distillers grains. Animal-sourced feedstuffs include fishmeal, fish paste, bone meal, meat and bone meal, poultry by-product meal, chicken by-product meal, chicken visceral digest, spray-dried poultry plasma, spray-dried egg product, hydrolyzed feather meal, intestine-mucosa product, peptones, blood meal (bovine or poultry), whey powder with high protein content, cheese powder, and insect meal. Microbial sources of protein feedstuffs include yeast protein and single-cell microbial protein (e.g., algae); they have more balanced AA profiles than most plant proteins for animal feeding. Animal-sourced ingredients can be used as a single source of dietary protein or in complementary combinations with plant and microbial sources of proteins. All protein feedstuffs must adequately provide functional AAs for aquatic animals.

Abstract
Non-thermal food processing is a viable alternative to traditional thermal processing to meet customer needs for high-quality, convenient and minimally processed foods. They are designed to eliminate elevated temperatures during processing and avoid the adverse effects of heat on food products. Numerous thermal and novel non-thermal technologies influence food structure at the micro and macroscopic levels. They affect several properties such as rheology, flavour, process stability, texture, and appearance at microscopic and macroscopic levels. This review presents existing knowledge and advances on the impact of non-thermal technologies, for instance, cold plasma treatment, irradiation, high-pressure processing, ultrasonication, pulsed light technology, high voltage electric field and pulsed electric field treatment on the structural changes of food components. An extensive review of the literature indicates that different non-thermal processing technologies can affect the food components, which significantly affects the structure of food. Applications of novel non-thermal technologies have shown considerable impact on food structure by altering protein structures via free radicals or larger or smaller molecules. Lipid oxidation is another process responsible for undesirable effects in food when treated with non-thermal techniques. Non-thermal technologies may also affect starch properties, reduce molecular weight, and change the starch granule's surface. Such modification of food structure could create novel food textures, enhance sensory properties, improve digestibility, improve water-binding ability and improve mediation of gelation processes. However, it is challenging to determine these technologies' influence on food components due to differences in their primary operation and equipment design mechanisms and different operating conditions. Hence, to get the most value from non-thermal technologies, more in-depth research about their effect on various food components is required.

Abstract
Simple Summary The first week after hatch is the most challenging period in the life of broilers. The digestive tract of the newly hatched chick is immature and must undergo dramatic changes before it can efficiently digest and absorb nutrients. The gut is the vital organ where nutrient digestion and absorption take place. Ontogenic changes that accompany improved digestion and absorption include increased secretion of digestive enzymes, increase in the gut absorptive surface area, and enhanced nutrient transporters. The obvious limiting factors are the secretion and activities of digestive enzymes, and the surface area for absorption. These limitations are overcome as the birds grow older, with concurrent improvements in nutrient utilization. In addition, substantial changes also take place in the physical and functional development of the immune system and intestinal microbial ecology. However, the focus of the current review was on nutrition-related challenges and nutritional approaches to assist the chick during this highly demanding period. Abstract Because the intestine is the primary nutrient supply organ, early development of digestive function in newly hatched chick will enable it to better utilize nutrients, grow efficiently, and achieve the genetic potential of contemporary broilers. Published data on the growth and digestive function of the gastrointestinal tract in neonatal poultry were reviewed. Several potential strategies to improve digestive tract growth and function in newly hatched chick are available and the options include breeder nutrition, in ovo feeding, early access to feed and water, special pre-starter diets, judicious use of feed additives, and early programming.

Abstract
The fundamental basis for the human function is provided by skeletal muscle. Advancing age causes selective fiber atrophy, motor unit loss, and hybrid fiber formation resulting in hampered mass and strength, thus referred to as sarcopenia. Influence on the loss of independence of aged adults, contribute toward inclined healthcare costs conveys the injurious impact. The current understating of age-related skeletal muscle changes are addressed in this review, and further discusses mechanisms regulating protein turnover, although they do not completely define the process yet. Moreover, the reduced capacity of muscle regeneration due to impairment of satellite cell activation and proliferation with neuronal, immunological, hormonal factors were brought into the light of attention. Nevertheless, complete understating of sarcopenia requires disentangling it from disuse and disease. Nutritional intervention is considered a potentially preventable factor contributing to sarcopenia. Seafood is a crucial player in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, where it consists of macro and micronutrients. Hence, the review shed light on seafood as a nutritional intrusion in the treatment and prevention of sarcopenia. Understanding multiple factors will provide therapeutic targets in the prevention, treatment, and overcoming adverse effects of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Simple Summary Ketosis metabolic research is extremely rare in Korea. This study aimed to compare the rumen fluid and milk metabolites between healthy and subclinical ketosis-diagnosed lactating dairy cattle. Six Holstein cows were allocated into two groups based on whether they fit the criteria for subclinical ketosis, and their rumen fluid and milk samples were collected from the stomach tube and pipeline milking system. Rumen fluid and milk samples metabolites were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. They were identified and quantified using the Chenomx NMR Suite 8.4 software and statistical analysis was performed using Metaboanalyst 5.0. In rumen fluid, ruminant energy source metabolites (acetate, glucose, and propionate) were significantly higher in the healthy group, whereas in milk, ketone body metabolites (3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) were significantly higher in the subclinical ketosis-diagnosed group. This report will serve as a reference guide for future studies on ketosis metabolomics in Korea. Abstract Ketosis metabolic research on lactating dairy cattle has been conducted worldwide; however, there have been very few Korean studies. Biofluids from lactating dairy cattle are necessary to study ketosis metabolic diseases. Six Holstein cows were divided into two groups (healthy (CON) and subclinical ketosis diagnosed (SCK)). Rumen fluid and milk samples were collected using a stomach tube and a pipeline milking system, respectively. Metabolites were determined using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and they were identified and quantified using the Chenomx NMR Suite 8.4 software and Metaboanalyst 5.0. In the rumen fluid of the SCK group, butyrate, sucrose, 3-hydroxybutyrate, maltose, and valerate levels were significantly higher than in the CON group, which showed higher levels of N,N-dimethylformamide, acetate, glucose, and propionate were significantly higher. Milk from the SCK group showed higher levels of maleate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, galactonate, and 3-hydroxykynurenine than that from the CON group, which showed higher levels of galactitol, 1,3-dihydroxyacetone, γ-glutamylphenylalanine, 5-aminolevulinate, acetate, and methylamine. Some metabolites are associated with ketosis diseases and the quality of rumen fluid and milk. This report will serve as a future reference guide for ketosis metabolomics studies in Korea.

Abstract
A total of 150 growing pigs ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) with an initial average body weight (BW) of 24.45 kg were used in a 6-week trial to estimate the optimum lysine to glutamic acid ratio in pigs fed low-protein diets supplemented with increasing level of synthetic glutamic acid (Glu). Pigs were randomly allotted to 5 dietary treatments consisting of either control diet (CON) formulated to have 157 g crude protein (CP) or negative control diets (NC, NC1, NC2 and NC3) with 20 g CP reduction and addition of Glu (1.1, 3.9, 6.8 and 9.6 g/kg feed respectively). Supplementing the increasing level of Glu to low CP diets did not exert any linear or quadratic responses in the growth performance parameters as well as nutrient digestibility. The serum creatinine concentration in pigs receiving CON diet showed trends (p = 0.063) in increment compared with pigs receiving NC diet. However, with the increase in the supplementation of Glu, there were no linear or quadratic responses on serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine concentrations. There was a tendency in the reduction (p = 0.088, p = 0.064) of backfat thickness and lean percentage, respectively, at week 3 and a trend in the reduction (p = 0.092) in lean percentage at week 6 in pigs fed NC diet compared with those fed CON diet. The increase in the supplemental level of Glu tended to show quadratic responses in the backfat thickness and lean percentage at week 3 and 6. In conclusion, the growth performance parameters as well as carcass traits with Lys: Glu ratio 1: 2.71 were very close with the mean values of CON diet indicating that 6.8 g Glu when supplemented to 2% CP reduced diet could achieve the comparable growth performance and carcass trait as that of standard basal diet.

Abstract
The present study was carried to investigate dynamic variations in serum amino acid (AA) contents and the relative mRNA abundance of the AA transporters and AA synthesis-related enzymes in liver, ovary and oviduct of pigeons during one egg-laying cycle (ELC). In experiment 1, seventy laying pigeons (American Silver King) were randomly divided into 14 groups by different days of one ELC (DELC) and arranged as a 2 × 7 factorial design, which included 2 ages (6-mo-old or 12-mo-old) and 7 DELCs. For experiment 2, 35 six-mo-old laying pigeons (American Silver King) were randomly divided into 7 groups by different DELCs and immediately treated with a 12-h fasting. Dynamic variations in serum AAs were detected during one ELC, characterized by high levels of Lys, Met, Leu, Phe, Tyr, Asp, Ser, Glu, Ala, and TAA on day 1 (D1) of one ELC (P < 0.05). Fasting caused obvious decreases in serum levels of Leu, Ile, Val, Phe, Tyr, and TAA from day 2 (D2) to day 7 (D7) (P < 0.05). Relative organ weights of ovary and oviduct increased to the peak values on day 13 (D13) (P < 0.05). Serum calcium decreased to the lowest level on day 4 (D4) (P < 0.05) and serum total triglyceride was kept in a high level on D1, D7, day 10 (D10), and D13 (P < 0.05). Relative mRNA expression of the AA synthesis genes and the AA transport genes exhibited different variation patterns in liver, ovary and oviduct, but Pearson correlation test showed the percentage of positive r values with significant differences were much higher in oviduct than those in liver or ovary. In conclusion, dynamic variations of serum AAs during one ELC were positively related with the expression of the AA transport genes and AA synthesis genes in oviduct, suggesting the upregulated serum AAs might be necessary to meet the AAs requirement for egg white formation in pigeon.

Abstract
Mudflat shellfish have evolved well-adapted strategies for coping with dynamic environmental fluxes and stressful conditions, including oxygen availability. The Manila clams Ruditapes philippinarum are worldwide cultured shellfish in marine intertidal zone, which usually encounter great risk of acute hypoxia exposure in coastal habitats. To reveal the effects of acute hypoxia on metabolic changes of the clams, we performed the integrated analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics to investigate the global changes of genes and metabolites during acute hypoxia stress at the whole-organism level. The comparative transcriptome analysis reveals that the clams show the remarkable depression in a variety of biological performance, such as metabolic rates, neuronal activity, biomineralization activity, and cell proliferation and differentiation at the hypoxic condition. The metabolomic analysis reveals that amino acid metabolism plays a critical role in the metabolic changes of the clams in response to acute hypoxia. A variety of free amino acids may not only be served as the potential osmolytes for osmotic regulation, but also may contribute to energy production during the acute hypoxia exposure. The metabolite analysis also reveals several important biomarkers for metabolic changes, and provides new insights into how clams deal with acute hypoxia. These findings suggest that clams may get through acute hypoxia stress by the adaptive metabolic strategy to survive short-period of acute hypoxia which is likely to occur in their typical habitat. The present findings will not only shed lights on the molecular and metabolic mechanisms of adaptive strategies under stressful conditions, but also provide the signaling metabolites to assess the physiological states of clams in aquaculture.
