Abstract
Mitochondrial function can be regulated by ion channels. Mitochondrial RNA splicing 2 (Mrs2) is a magnesium ion (Mg2+) channel located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, thereby mediating the Mg2+ influx into the mitochondrial matrix. However, its potential role in regulating the Mg homeostasis and mitochondrial function in aquatic species is still unclear. This study molecularly characterizes the gene encoding Mrs2 in fish M. amblycephala with its functions in maintaining the Mg homeostasis and mitochondrial function verified. The mrs2 gene is 2133 bp long incorporating a 1269 bp open reading frame, which encodes 422 amino acids. The Mrs2 protein includes two transmembrane domains and a conserved tripeptide Gly-Met-Asn, and has a high homology (65.92-97.64%) with those of most vertebrates. The transcript of mrs2 was relatively high in the white muscle, liver and kidney. The inhibition of mrs2 reduces the expressions of Mg2+ influx/efflux-related proteins, mitochondrial Mg content, and the activities of mitochondrial complex I and V in hepatocytes. However, the over-expression of mrs2 increases the expressions of Mg2+ influx/efflux-related proteins, mitochondrial Mg content, and the complex V activity, but decreases the activities of mitochondrial complex III and IV and citrate synthase in hepatocytes. Collectively, Mrs2 is highly conserved among different species, and is prerequisite for maintaining Mg homeostasis and mitochondrial function in fish.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) is a severe form of beta-thalassemia, characterized by defective-globin production, resulting in a buildup of unpaired alpha globin chains. Patients with TDT can only survive if they receive safe blood transfusions regularly, which causes iron overload in their blood, which causes a variety of disorders. Cations and trace elements in TDT patients as a drug target deserve more studies. OBJECTIVES In the present study, the cations and some trace elements were studied in TDT patients as a tool to adjust their level in the case of any disturbances. METHODS Serum calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and iron were measured spectrophotometrically while manganese and cobalt were measured by flameless atomic absorption spectroscopy in 100 TDT patients and compared with 35 healthy control children. RESULTS Patients with TDT exhibit a notable elevation in blood levels of iron, copper, copper/zinc ratio, and manganese, with a substantial reduction in serum levels of zinc, magnesium, calcium, and cobalt, as compared to the control group. These minerals have diverse associations with clinical data and transfusion frequencies. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that the elevated levels of iron, manganese, and calcium exhibit the greatest diagnostic capability, with a sensitivity and specificity of over 80 %, and a Youdin's J value of more than 0.6. CONCLUSION The levels of cations and trace elements are disturbed in TDT patients. Hence, the monitoring and adjustment of the level of these minerals are important to prevent further consequences.

Abstract
Metals are integral components of the natural environment, and their presence in the food supply is inevitable and complex. While essential metals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, and copper are crucial for various physiological functions and must be consumed through the diet, others, like lead, mercury, and cadmium, are toxic even at low concentrations and pose serious health risks. This study comprehensively analyzes the presence, importance, and consequences of metals in the food chain. We explore the pathways through which metals enter the food supply, their distribution across different food types, and the associated health implications. By examining current regulatory standards for maximum allowable levels of various metals, we highlight the importance of ensuring food safety and protecting public health. Furthermore, this research underscores the need for continuous monitoring and management of metal content in food, especially as global agricultural and food production practices evolve. Our findings aim to inform dietary recommendations, food fortification strategies, and regulatory policies, ultimately contributing to safer and more nutritionally balanced diets.

Abstract
Background Considerable morbidity and death are associated with acute kidney damage (AKI) following total aortic arch replacement (TAAR). The relationship between AKI following TAAR and serum magnesium levels remains unknown. The intention of this research was to access the predictive value of serum magnesium levels on admission to the Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) for AKI in patients receiving TAAR. Methods From May 2018 to January 2020, a prospective, observational study was performed in the Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital CSICU. Patients accepting TAAR admitted to the CSICU were studied. The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) definition of serum creatinine was used to define AKI, and KDIGO stages two or three were used to characterize severe AKI. Multivariable logistic regression and area under the curve receiver-operator characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) analysis were conducted to assess the predictive capability of the serum magnesium for AKI detection. Finally, the prediction model for AKI was established and internally validated. Results Of the 396 enrolled patients, AKI occurred in 315 (79.5%) patients, including 154 (38.8%) patients with severe AKI. Serum magnesium levels were independently related to the postoperative AKI and severe AKI (both, P < 0.001), and AUC-ROCs for predicting AKI and severe AKI were 0.707 and 0.695, respectively. Across increasing quartiles of serum magnesium, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of postoperative AKI were 1.00 (reference), 1.04 (0.50-2.82), 1.20 (0.56-2.56), and 6.19 (2.02-23.91) (P for Trend < 0.001). When serum magnesium was included to a baseline model with established risk factors, AUC-ROC (0.833 vs 0.808, P = 0.050), reclassification (P < 0.001), and discrimination (P = 0.002) were further improved. Conclusions Serum magnesium levels on admission are an independent predictor of AKI. In TAAR patients, elevated serum magnesium levels were linked to an increased risk of AKI. In addition, the established risk factor model for AKI can be considerably improved by the addition of serum magnesium in TAAR patients hospitalized in the CSICU.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcium and magnesium ions are highly abundant and important cations in human body. At the same time, both dyscalcemia and dysmagnesemia are frequently encountered in the clinical practice. As deficiency or excess of Ca(II) or Mg(II) can cause severe symptoms, determining these ions in serum is of great importance. Concentration of these ions in biological samples is typically assayed in clinical laboratories with the use of expensive and specialized equipment. Since those methods cannot be easily adapted for self-diagnosis purposes, there is a great need to develop a convenient tool for reliable determination of calcium and magnesium in serum at the point-of-care. RESULTS The colorimetric methods employed for calcium and magnesium analysis were o-cresophtalein complexone assay and xylidyl blue assay, respectively. Analytical signal acquisition was accomplished using an ordinary flatbed scanner or smartphone and free software. For increased user-friendliness the device was optimized to perform simultaneous determination of calcium and magnesium ions in only 10 min. In the optimized conditions, the limit of detection for calcium ions was 0.09 mmol L-1, while for magnesium it was 0.04 mmol L-1. Determination of both ions requires only 4 μL of serum sample. The developed paper-based sensors were validated with control human serum samples and the obtained relative errors for majority of samples were below 20 %. SIGNIFICANCE In this paper, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device for simultaneous determination of calcium and magnesium ions in human serum is reported for the first time. Additionally, this is also the first report on colorimetric determination in serum of any of these ions in paper-based format. Simultaneous detection of both ions allows for fast and user-friendly screening of disturbance in calcium and magnesium homeostasis.

Abstract
In this study, we present the first meta-analysis of human urine reported in the literature, drawing data from a total of 35 articles with a combined participant count of 14,021. Through this analysis, we have developed an artificial urine (AU) composition that can be adjusted within typical physiological parameters for in vitro applications. Our findings demonstrate the utility of this AU in determining the solubility of nitrofurantoin, particularly in the context of crystalluria. Notably, we observe that in saline, nitrofurantoin solubility, within the framework of its urinary pharmacokinetics, suggests a risk of crystalluria. However, in AU, this risk is mitigated due to complexation with urea. More broadly, we anticipate that our developed formulation will serve as a foundation for translational studies across biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition in which the pathological cumulation of fat with coexisting inflammation and damage of hepatic cells leads to progressive dysfunctions of the liver. Except for the commonly well-known major causes of NAFLD such as obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, or diabetes, an unbalanced diet and imbalanced nutritional status should also be taken into consideration. In this narrative review, we summarized the current knowledge regarding the micro- and macronutrient status of patients suffering from NAFLD considering various diets and supplementation of chosen supplements. We aimed to summarize the knowledge indicating which nutritional impairments may be associated with the onset and progression of NAFLD at the same time evaluating the potential therapy targets that could facilitate the healing process. Except for the above-mentioned objectives, one of the most important aspects of this review was to highlight the possible strategies for taking care of NAFLD patients taking into account the challenges and opportunities associated with the micronutrient status of the patients. The current research indicates that a supplementation of chosen vitamins (e.g., vitamin A, B complex, C, or D) as well as chosen elements such as zinc may alleviate the symptoms of NAFLD. However, there is still a lack of sufficient data regarding healthy ranges of dosages; thus, further research is of high importance in this matter.

Abstract
Magnesium and vitamin D play important roles in most cells of the body. These nutrients act in a coordinated fashion to maintain physiologic functions of various organs, and their abnormal balance could adversely affect these functions. Therefore, deficient states of both nutrients may lead to several chronic medical conditions and increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have altered metabolism of both magnesium and vitamin D. Some studies indicate that magnesium could have a role in the synthesis and metabolism of vitamin D, and that magnesium supplementation substantially reversed the resistance to vitamin D treatment in some clinical situations. Recent observational studies also found that magnesium intake significantly interacted with vitamin D status and, particularly with the risk of cardiovascular mortality. It is therefore essential to ensure adequate levels of magnesium to obtain the optimal benefits of vitamin D supplementation in CKD patients. In this review, we discuss magnesium physiology, magnesium and vitamin D metabolism in CKD, potential metabolic interactions between magnesium and vitamin D and its clinical relevance, as well as the possible role of magnesium supplementation to assure adequate vitamin D levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypomagnesemia has been documented in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). This study aims to characterize hypomagnesemia in alcoholic hepatitis (AH) patients and identify its response with liver injury and severity markers. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 49 male and female AH patients with an age range of 27-66 years were enrolled in this study. Patients were grouped by MELD: MiAH (mild AH < 12 [n = 5]), MoAH (12 ≤ moderate AH ≤ 19 [n = 13]), and SAH (severe AH ≥ 20 [n = 31]). Patients were also evaluated by MELD grouping as non-severe (MELD ≤ 19 [n = 18]) and severe (MELD ≥ 20 [n = 31]). Data were collected on demographics (Age; BMI), drinking history (AUDIT; LTDH), liver injury (ALT; AST), and liver severity (Maddrey's DF; MELD; AST:ALT). Serum magnesium (SMg) levels were tested as SOC lab (normal ≥ 0.85 ≤ 1.10 mmol/L). RESULTS SMg was deficient in each group; the lowest in the MoAH patients. The true positivity of SMg values were at a good performance level when compared between severe and non-severe AH patients (AUROC: 0.695, p = 0.034). We found that the SMg level < 0.78 mmol/L could predict severe AH (sensitivity = 0.100 and 1-specificity = 0.000) at this true positivity, and subsequently analyzed patients with SMg < 0.78 mmol/L (Gr.4) and ≥0.78 mmol/L (Gr.5). Between Gr.4 and Gr.5, there were clinically as well as statistically significant differences in disease severity as defined by MELD, Maddrey's DF, and ABIC scores. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the utility of SMg levels to identify AH patients who may have progressed to severe status. The extent of magnesium response in AH patients also corresponded significantly with the prognosis of liver disease. Physicians suspecting AH in patients with recent heavy drinking may use SMg as an indicator to guide further testing, referrals, or treatment.

Abstract
Macrominerals play vital roles in a multitude of physiologic systems. A myriad of biochemical reactions are dependent on or affected by these electrolytes. The current review attempts to identify the role of macrominerals as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium and sulfur in human health, in addition to their absorption and homeostasis inside the body. We also focused on their amount in major food sources and the recommended daily intake of each macromineral. In addition, a deep insight into the orchestration of the 6 different macrominerals' requirements is presented across the human life cycle, beginning from fertility and pregnancy, and reaching adulthood and senility, with insight on interactions among them and underlying action mechanisms. The effect of sex is also presented for each mineral at each life stage to highlight the different daily requirements and/ or effects. The current review identified the role of macrominerals in human health, in addition to their absorption and homeostasis in the body. Based on the in-depth understanding of the factors influencing the metabolism of macrominerals, we could better explore their safety and possible therapeutic potential in specific disorders. There is still a need to precisely demonstrate the bioavailability of macrominerals from various types of functional food.

Abstract
Bioactive cations, including calcium, copper and magnesium, have shown the potential to become the alternative to protein growth factor-based therapeutics for bone healing. Ion substitutions are less costly, more stable, and more effective at low concentrations. Although they have been shown to be effective in providing bone grafts with more biological functions, the precise control of ion release kinetics is still a challenge. Moreover, the synergistic effect of three or more metal ions on bone regeneration has rarely been studied. In this study, vaterite-calcite CaCO3 particles were loaded with copper (Cu2+) and magnesium (Mg2+). The polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) was deposited on CaCuMg-CO3 particles via layer-by-layer technique to further improve the stability and biocompatibility of the particles and to enable controlled release of multiple metal ions. The PEM coated microcapsules were successfully combined with collagen at the outmost layer, providing a further stimulating microenvironment for bone regeneration. The in vitro release studies showed remarkably stable release of Cu2+ in 2 months without initial burst release. Mg2+ was released in relatively low concentration in the first 7 days. Cell culture studies showed that CaCuMg-PEM-Col microcapsules stimulated cell proliferation, extracellular maturation and mineralization more effectively than blank control and other microcapsules without collagen adsorption (Ca-PEM, CaCu-PEM, CaMg-PEM, CaCuMg-PEM). In addition, the CaCuMg-PEM-Col microcapsules showed positive effects on osteogenesis and angiogenesis in gene expression studies. The results indicate that such a functional and controllable delivery system of multiple bioactive ions might be a safer, simpler and more efficient alternative of protein growth factor-based therapeutics for bone regeneration. It also provides an effective method for functionalizing bone grafts for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) is an essential divalent cation involved in various enzymatic reactions that regulate vital biological functions. The main goal was to evaluate Mg status and its association with nutritional indicators in 78 children and adolescents with chronic diseases. We assessed anthropometric, biochemical, diet, body composition, and bone densitometry valuations. Serum Mg and Ca levels were determined using the standardized method and diet calcium (Ca) and Mg consumption by a prospective 72 h diet survey. Mean serum Ca (9.9 mg/dL), Mg (2.08 mg/dL) dietary Ca (102% DRI: Dietary Reference Intake), and Mg intake (105% DRI) were normal. A total of 45% had hypomagnesemia, 12% had hypermagnesemia, and 26% and 24% had inadequate and high Mg intake, respectively. Only 6% of patients had poor Mg intake and hypomagnesemia, and 54% and 90% of our series had an elevated serum Ca/Mg ratio > 4.70 (mean 4.79) and a low Ca/Mg intake ratio < 1.70 (mean 1.06), respectively. Both Ca/Mg ratios were linked with the risk of developing other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, syndrome metabolic, and even several cancers. Therefore, 79% of children and adolescents with chronic diseases were at elevated risk of having abnormal Mg status and developing other chronic illnesses.

Abstract
Evidence of the association of magnesium (Mg) with arterial stiffness has so far been conflicting. The interplay between hypertension and elevated body mass index (BMI), with hypomagnesemia, instead, has been described in the literature in a more consistent way. Our study aims at revisiting the correlations between blood Mg levels and hemodynamic and body composition parameters in the general population, exploring the sensitivity profile of ionized Mg (Ion-Mg) compared to total Mg (Tot-Mg). We collected data from 755 subjects randomly chosen from a Swiss population previously described and stratified our sample into four equivalent classes according to ionized (whole blood) and total (serum) magnesium. After correcting for age, statistically significant differences emerged between: (i) Tot-Mg ≤ 0.70 and 0.81 ≤ Tot-Mg ≤ 0.90 for cf-PWV (p = 0.039); (ii) Tot-Mg ≤ 0.70 and Tot-Mg ≥ 0.91 for o-PWV (p = 0.046). We also found a statistically significant difference among groups of Ion-Mg values for the 24 h extremes of systolic blood pressure (p = 0.048) and among groups of Tot-Mg for BMI (p = 0.050). Females showed significantly lower levels of total magnesium (p = 0.035) and ionized magnesium (p < 0.001) than males. The overall agreement between magnesium analysis methods was 64% (95%CI: 60.8−67.7%). Our results confirm that Ion-Mg compared with Tot-Mg offers a different profile in detecting both correlations with hemodynamic and body composition parameters and dysmagnesemias. Lower levels of magnesium were associated with worse arterial aging parameters, larger 24 h blood pressure excursions, and higher BMI. Ion-Mg was superior in detecting the correlation with blood pressure only. Considering Ion-Mg as a more specific marker of the magnesium status, and the partially contradictory results of our explorative cross-sectional study, to avoid confounding factors and misinterpretations, ionized magnesium should be used as reference in future studies.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) is an essential micronutrient that participates in various enzymatic reactions that regulate vital biological functions. The main aim was to assess the Mg status and its association with nutritional indicators in seventeen cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The serum Mg and calcium (Ca) levels were determined using standardized methods and the dietary Mg intake by prospective 72 h dietary surveys. The mean serum Ca (2.45 mmol/L) and Mg (0.82 mmol/L) had normal levels, and the mean dietary intake of the Ca (127% DRI: Dietary Reference Intake) and Mg (125% DRI) were high. No patients had an abnormal serum Ca. A total of 47% of the subjects had hypomagnesemia and 12% insufficient Mg consumption. One patient had a serum Mg deficiency and inadequate Mg intake. A total of 47 and 82% of our series had a high serum Ca/Mg ratio of >4.70 (mean 4.89) and a low Ca/Mg intake ratio of <1.70 (mean 1.10), respectively. The likelihood of a high Ca/Mg ratio was 49 times higher in patients with a serum Mg deficiency than in normal serum Mg patients. Both Ca/Mg ratios were associated with the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and even several cancers. Therefore, 53% of the CF patients were at high risk of a Mg deficiency and developing other chronic diseases.

Abstract
To explore the migration law of magnesium ions (Mg2+) during freezing and melting processes, laboratory simulation experiments involving freezing and melting were carried out to investigate the influence of ice thickness, freezing temperature, initial concentration, and initial pH on the distribution of Mg2+ in the ice-water system. The distribution coefficient "K" (the ratio of the Mg2+ concentration in the ice layer to the Mg2+ concentration in the water layer under ice) was used to characterize the migration ability of Mg2+. The results showed that during the freezing process, the concentration distribution of Mg2+ in the ice and water two-phase system was as follows: ice layer < water before freezing < water layer under ice; in other words, it migrated from ice layer to the water layer under ice. "K" decreased with increasing ice thickness, freezing temperature, initial concentration, and initial pH; the higher the ice thickness, freezing temperature, initial concentration, and initial pH were, the higher the migration efficiency of Mg2+ into the water layer under ice was. During the melting process, Mg2+ was released in large amounts (50-60%) at the initial stage (0-25%) and in small amounts (25-100%) uniformly in the middle and later periods. According to the change of Mg2+ concentration in ice melt water, an exponential model was established to predict Mg2+ concentration in ice melt period. The migration law of Mg2+during the freezing and melting process was explained by using first principles. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Early studies have reported various electrolyte abnormalities at admission in patients with severe COVID-19. 104 out of 193 patients admitted to our institution presented with hypermagnesemia at presentation. It is believed this may be important in the evaluation of severe SARS-CoV-2 infections. This study evaluated the outcomes of hypermagnesemia in patients with COVID-19. A retrospective chart review of patients admitted to the hospital with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection was conducted. A review of the medical literature regarding hypermagnesemia, magnesium levels in critical care illness and electrolyte abnormalities in patients with COVID-19 was performed. Differences in demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with hypermagnesemia and normomagnesemia were evaluated using descriptive statistics. Other known variables of disease severity were analyzed. 104 patients (54%) were identified with hypermagnesemia (≥2.5 mg/dL). 48 of those patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (46%, p<0.001). 34 patients required ventilator support (32%, p<0.0001). With age-adjusted logistic regression analysis hypermagnesemia was associated with mortality (p=0.007). This study demonstrates that hypermagnesemia is a significant marker of disease severity and adverse outcome in SARS-CoV-2 infections. We recommend serum magnesium be added to the panel of tests routinely ordered in evaluation of severe SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnesium plays a key role in bone health and may, therefore, represent an interesting nutrient for the prevention of bone loss and osteoporosis. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the impact of magnesium intake from any source on bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), bone turnover markers, and fracture risk in older adults. METHODS A systematic search was conducted using Embase, Medline Ovid and Cochrane Central from database inception to October 2020. All studies that related magnesium intake with bone health outcomes among adults aged ≥60 years were included. Two investigators independently conducted abstract and full-text screenings, data extractions, and risk of bias assessments. Authors were contacted for missing data. RESULTS Once 787 records were screened, six cohort studies, one case-control study and five cross-sectional studies were included. Qualitative evaluation demonstrated a positive trend between higher magnesium intake and higher hip and femoral neck BMD. Meta-analysis of four studies showed a significant positive association between magnesium intake and hip BMD (pooled beta: 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01-0.06, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This systematic review indicates that a higher magnesium intake may support an increase in hip and femoral neck BMD. Due to limited research no associations with BMD at other sites or fractures were found. There is a need for properly designed cohort studies to determine the association between magnesium intake and bone health in older adults. Next, large and long-term randomized controlled trials in older adults are needed to determine whether an increase in magnesium (supplementation) intake can improve bone health. The combination of several bone nutrients (calcium, vitamin D, protein, magnesium and potentially more) may be needed for the most optimal effect on bone health and to delay or prevent the development of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Chronic intestinal failure (CIF) is a rare but feared complication of Crohn’s disease. Depending on the remaining length of the small intestine, the affected intestinal segment, and the residual bowel function, CIF can result in a wide spectrum of symptoms, from single micronutrient malabsorption to complete intestinal failure. Management of CIF has improved significantly in recent years. Advances in home-based parenteral nutrition, in particular, have translated into increased survival and improved quality of life. Nevertheless, 60% of patients are permanently reliant on parenteral nutrition. Encouraging results with new drugs such as teduglutide have added a new dimension to CIF therapy. The outcomes of patients with CIF could be greatly improved by more effective prevention, understanding, and treatment. In complex cases, the care of patients with CIF requires a multidisciplinary approach involving not only physicians but also dietitians and nurses to provide optimal intestinal rehabilitation, nutritional support, and an improved quality of life. Here, we summarize current literature on CIF and short bowel syndrome, encompassing epidemiology, pathophysiology, and advances in surgical and medical management, and elucidate advances in the understanding and therapy of CIF-related complications such as catheter-related bloodstream infections and intestinal failure-associated liver disease.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chromic metabolic disease that affects a large segment of the population worldwide. Physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and genetic predisposition are main risk factors for disease development. In the last decade, it was clear to the scientific community that DM development is linked to a novel disease inducer that was later defined as diabetogenic factors of pollution and endocrine disrupting agents. Environmental pollution is exponentially increasing in uncontrolled manner in several countries. Environmental pollutants are of diverse nature and toxicities, including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, and heavy metals. In the current review, we shed light on the impact of each class of these pollutants and the underlined molecular mechanism of diabetes induction and biological toxicities. Finally, a brief overview about the connection between coronavirus disease 2019 and diabetes pandemics is presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnesium, known as "the forgotten electrolyte", is an essential element of life. Magnesium deficiency is implicated in many diseases, including liver cirrhosis. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of magnesium deficiency in liver cirrhosis and investigate the relationship between magnesium levels and complication of liver cirrhosis and clinical outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS Cirrhotic patients with serum magnesium levels measured were retrospectively identified from 2016 to 2017. Demographics, laboratory parameters, complications were collected. The Child-Pugh class, MELD score, and ALBI score were calculated. RESULTS The mean serum magnesium level of all 152 patients was lower than the normal, including 92 patients diagnosed with magnesium deficiency. Compared to Child-Pugh class A, magnesium levels were significantly lower in the patients with Child-Pugh class B or C (F = 10.26, p < .05). Magnesium levels were also considerably lower in the group with MELD score ≥21, compared to the other two groups with MELD score < 15 or 15-20 (F = 6.59, p < .05). Similarly, magnesium levels were significantly lower in the group with ALBI score > -1.39 (grade 3), compared to the other two groups with ALBI with score ≤ -2.6 (grade 1) or > -2.6, ≤ -1.39 (grade 2) (F = 8.44, p<.001). Furthermore, magnesium levels were lower in cirrhotic patients with infection. Magnesium-deficient patients had lower transplant-free survival rates than non-deficient patients. CONCLUSION Magnesium deficiency is highly prevalent in cirrhotic patients. Magnesium deficiency is related to worse transplant-free survival, infection and the severity of liver cirrhosis.

Abstract
Magnesium plays an important role in many physiological functions. Habitually low intakes of magnesium and in general the deficiency of this micronutrient induce changes in biochemical pathways that can increase the risk of illness and, in particular, chronic degenerative diseases. The assessment of magnesium status is consequently of great importance, however, its evaluation is difficult. The measurement of serum magnesium concentration is the most commonly used and readily available method for assessing magnesium status, even if serum levels have no reliable correlation with total body magnesium levels or concentrations in specific tissues. Therefore, this review offers an overview of recent insights into magnesium from multiple perspectives. Starting from a biochemical point of view, it aims at highlighting the risk due to insufficient uptake (frequently due to the low content of magnesium in the modern western diet), at suggesting strategies to reach the recommended dietary reference values, and at focusing on the importance of detecting physiological or pathological levels of magnesium in various body districts, in order to counteract the social impact of diseases linked to magnesium deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Adoption of sedentary life style and westernized diet are shown to be associated with development of NAFLD. Since previous studies suggested that calcium (Ca) to magnesium (Mg) ratio intake is associated with some chronic diseases including dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, we designed this study to find any possible association between this ratio and NAFLD development. METHODS The NAFLD was diagnosed using Fibroscan according to a CAP cut-off value of 263 dB/m. Dietary intakes of one hundred and ninety-six patients with incident NAFLD diagnosis, and eight hundred and three controls without NAFLD were assessed using a valid food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Dietary nutrients were calculated using Nutritionist IV software. RESULTS Age of the study population (57 % female) was 43.2 ± 14.1 years. In addition, energy-adjusted daily calcium to magnesium intake ratio was 2.34 ± 0.57 and 2.73 ± 0.69 for control and case groups, respectively. In the multivariable-adjusted model, after adjustment for potential confounding variables; including, age, gender, BMI, alcohol consumption, smoking, diabetes, physical activity, energy, dietary fiber, carbohydrate, fat, and protein intakes, participants in the third (Q3) and fourth (Q4) quartile of Ca/Mg ratio intake had a greater development of incidental NAFLD compared to the lowest quartile (Q1) [(OR = 2.86; 95 % CI: 1.20-6.81), (P-value = 0.017) and (OR = 5.97; 95 % CI: 2.54-14.01), (P-value < 0.001) for Q3 and Q4 compared to the Q1, respectively]. Moreover, energy-adjusted Ca to Mg intake ratio was positively correlated with plasma level of ALT (r = 0.18; P = 0.01); contrarily, it had no correlation with plasma levels of AST. CONCLUSIONS The current study revealed that higher dietary Ca to Mg intake ratio is associated with a greater development of NAFLD. Further interventional studies are needed to confirm the causal relationship of the Ca/Mg ratio intake and development of NAFLD.

Abstract
Higher dietary intake of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and vitamin D has been associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and a higher intracellular ratio of Ca to Mg leads to insulin resistance. Previous epidemiological studies did not examine the combined effects of dietary Ca, Mg, and vitamin D as well as ratio of Ca to Mg with T2DM. Therefore, we assessed the relationship between dietary intakes of Mg, Ca, and vitamin D (using 24-hr recalls) individually and in composite and T2DM in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014, which involved 20,480 adults (9,977 men and 10,503 women) with comprehensive information on related nutrients, and anthropometric, demographic, and biomarker variables using multivariable logistic regression. The results indicated that dietary calcium at Q3 (812 mg/day) was significantly linked with T2DM in women (OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.65). Dietary vitamin D at Q3 (5.25 μg/day) significantly reduced the odds of T2DM by 21% in men (OR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.64, 0.98). This is an interesting study that has important implications for dietary recommendations. It is concluded that US adults having dietary Ca below the RDA were associated with increased risk of T2DM in all population and women, while higher ratio of Ca to Mg was associated with increased risk of T2DM in all population and increased vitamin D intake is related to decreased risk of T2DM in men. Moreover, further research is needed to make more definitive nutritional recommendations.

Abstract
Thalassemia major is the most severe form of thalassemia and occurs with the impaired synthesis of β-globin which causes the accumulation of unpaired alpha globin chain. Patients with beta thalassemia major can only survive with periodically safe blood transfusions leading to the accumulation of iron in the bloods of patients, and this causes several endocrinopathies. Although iron overload in thalassemic patients has been extensively studied, there is little information about the levels of other trace elements. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences of serum concentrations of sodium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, iron, copper, and zinc for patients with major β-thalassemia. Concentration of elements was determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry system. The statistical difference between the elemental concentrations of the patient and control groups was found by the Mann-Whitney U test. In addition, the relationship between concentrations of the measured elements for each group was determined by the Spearman correlation test. The results revealed that iron, zinc, magnesium, and manganese serum levels of thalassemic patients were significantly higher than the control group while calcium concentration was statistically lower than the control group. There was no significant difference observed for copper and sodium levels of patients when compared to the healthy control group.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral that plays an essential role as cofactor of more than 300 enzymes. Mg in farm animals' and human nutrition is recommended to avoid Mg deficiency, ensure adequate growth and health maintenance. Mg supplementation above the estimated minimum requirements is the best practice to improve farm animals' performances (fertility and yield) and food products' quality, since the performance of farm animals has grown in recent decades. Mg supplementation in pigs increases meat quality and sows' fertility; in poultry, it helps to avoid deficiency-related health conditions and to improve meat quality and egg production by laying hens; in dairy cows, it serves to avoid grass tetany and milk fever, two conditions related to hypomagnesaemia, and to support their growth. Thus, Mg supplementation increases food products' quality and prevents Mg deficiency in farm animals, ensuring an adequate Mg content in animal-source food. These latter are excellent Mg sources in human diets. Sub-optimal Mg intake by humans has several implications in bone development, muscle function, and health maintenance. This review summarizes the main knowledge about Mg in farm animals and in human nutrition.

Abstract
It is becoming more feasible to use nano-enabled agricultural products such as nanofertilizers and nanopesticides to improve the efficiency of agrochemical delivery to crop plants. Experimental results have shown that nano-agrochemicals have great potential for reducing the environmental impact of traditional agrochemicals while simultaneously significantly increasing crop production. However, emerging data suggest that nano-enabled products are not only capable of increasing yield, but also result in alterations in crop quality. Variation in proteins, sugars, starch content, as well as in metallic essential elements have been reported. Verbi gratia, albumin, globulin, and prolamin have been significantly increased in rice exposed to CeO2 engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), while CeO2, CuO, and ZnO ENPs have increased Ca, Mg, and P in several crops. Conversely, reductions in Mo and Ni have been reported in cucumber and kidney beans exposed to CeO2 and ZnO engineered nanomaterials, respectively. However, reports on specific effects in human health due to the consumption of agricultural products obtained from plants exposed to nano-agrochemicals are still missing.

Abstract
Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is an acute neuropsychiatric state. Untreated, WE can lead to coma or death, or progress to Korsakoff syndrome (KS) - a dementia characterized by irreversible loss of anterograde memory. Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency lies at the heart of this condition. Yet, our understanding of thiamine regarding prophylaxis and treatment of WE remains limited. This may contribute to the current undertreatment of WE in clinical practice. The overall aim of this review is to identify the best strategies for prophylaxis and treatment of WE in regard to (a) dose of thiamine, (b) mode of administration, (c) timing of switch from one mode of administration to another, (d) duration of administration, and (e) use of magnesium along thiamine as an essential cofactor. Evidence from randomized controlled trials and other intervention studies is virtually absent. Therefore, we have to resort to basic science for proof of principle instead. Here, we present the first part of our clinical review, in which we explore the physiology of thiamine and the pathophysiology of thiamine deficiency. We first explore both of these in their historical context. We then review the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of thiamine, exploring the roles of the six currently known thiamine compounds, their transporters, and target enzymes. We also explore the significance of magnesium as a cofactor in thiamine-facilitated enzymatic reactions and thiamine transport. In the second (forthcoming) part of this review, we will use the findings of the current review to make evidence-based inferences about strategies for prophylaxis and treatment of WE.

Abstract
AIM Chronic heavy alcohol intake frequently causes liver inflammation/injury, and altered mineral metabolism may be involved in this liver pathology. In this study, we evaluated the association of heavy drinking, changes in serum magnesium levels and biochemical evidence of liver injury in alcohol-use-disorder (AUD) patients who had no clinical signs or symptoms of liver injury. We also aimed to identify any sex-based differences in patients with mild or no biochemical evidence of liver injury induced by heavy drinking. METHODS 114 heavy drinking alcohol-dependent (AD) female and male patients aged 21-65 years without clinical manifestations of liver injury, who were admitted to an alcohol treatment program, were grouped by alanine aminotransaminase (ALT) levels: ≤ 40 IU/L, as no liver injury (GR.1), and ALT>40 IU/L as mild liver injury (GR.2). Patients were actively drinking until the day of admission. Comprehensive metabolic biochemistry results, fatty acid panel, serum magnesium and drinking history data were collected at admission; and study-specific measures were evaluated. RESULTS In all AD patients, lower magnesium was significantly associated with the heavy drinking marker and heavy drinking days past 90 days (HDD90). A lower serum magnesium concentration was observed in AD patients with mild liver injury. Females of both groups had mean levels of magnesium in the deficient range. A clinically significant drop in magnesium levels was observed only in the GR.2 (mild liver injury) male AD patients. Females showed a significant association between low magnesium levels and the ω6:ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) ratio. CONCLUSIONS Specific heavy drinking markers showed an association with lower magnesium levels. Low serum magnesium levels are common in subjects with AUD and appear to be associated with the onset of liver injury.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the effects of low blood magnesium levels on the optic nerve, retina, and retinal vascular structure.Methods: This observational and cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2019 and May 2020 with participants aged 20-39 years, who had a visual acuity of ≥20/20, the axial length of 22-24.5 mm, refractive defect spherical equivalent of ≤±3D, and intraocular pressure of ≤21 mm Hg. All participants had a complaint of twitching in their eyes. The participants with normal serum magnesium levels constituted the control group, and patients with hypomagnesemia constituted the patient group. Updated AngioScan software (Navis ver. 1.8.0.) of Nidek's RS-3000 Advance system was used to analyze the spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and optical coherence tomography-angiography (OCT-A) images.Results: A total of 100 right eyes of 100 individuals was included in the study. The mean retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness was 108.52 ± 12.46 μm in the control group, and 97.3 ± 9.7 μm in the hypomagnesemia group (P < .001). In the control group, the global superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) vessel densities (VDs) were 41.92 ± 2.29, and 37.54 ± 3.83, respectively. In the patient group, the global SCP and DCP VDs were 37.66 ± 3.14, and 32.95 ± 5.57, respectively. The SCP and DCP VD percentages were significantly lower in the patient group. The mean foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, perimeter and circularity index (CI) were 0.32 ± 0.13 mm2, 2.89 ± 0.59 mm, and 0.52 ± 0.09, respectively, for the control group and 0.38 ± 0.11 mm2, 2.99 ± 0.64 mm, and 0.38 ± 0.1, respectively, for the patient group. The FAZ area and perimeter were significantly higher (P = .013 and P = .001) and FAZ CI was significantly lower (P < .001) in the patients with hypomagnesemia.Conclusion: Our study revealed that OCT and OCT-A measurements may be used in the determination of the optic nerve and retinal vascular structure changes in hypomagnesemia.

Abstract
Purpose of review: Strategies to mitigate muscle cramps are a top research priority for patients receiving hemodialysis. As hypomagnesemia is a possible risk factor for cramping, we reviewed the literature to better understand the physiology of cramping as well as the epidemiology of hypomagnesemia and muscle cramps. We also sought to review the evidence from interventional studies on the effect of oral and dialysate magnesium-based therapies on muscle cramps. Sources of information: Peer-reviewed articles. Methods: We searched for relevant articles in major bibliographic databases including MEDLINE and EMBASE. The methodological quality of interventional studies was assessed using a modified version of the Downs and Blacks criteria checklist. Key findings: The etiology of muscle cramps in patients receiving hemodialysis is poorly understood and there are no clear evidence-based prevention or treatment strategies. Several factors may play a role including a low concentration of serum magnesium. The prevalence of hypomagnesemia (concentration of <0.7 mmol/L) in patients receiving hemodialysis ranges from 10% to 20%. Causes of hypomagnesemia include a low dietary intake of magnesium, use of medications that inhibit magnesium absorption (eg, proton pump inhibitors), increased magnesium excretion (eg, high-dose loop diuretics), and a low concentration of dialysate magnesium. Dialysate magnesium concentrations of ≤0.5 mmol/L may be associated with a decrease in serum magnesium concentration over time. Preliminary evidence from observational and interventional studies suggests a higher dialysate magnesium concentration will raise serum magnesium concentrations and may reduce the frequency and severity of muscle cramps. However, the quality of evidence supporting this benefit is limited, and larger, multicenter clinical trials are needed to further determine if magnesium-based therapy can reduce muscle cramps in patients receiving hemodialysis. In studies conducted to date, increasing the concentration of dialysate magnesium appears to be well-tolerated and is associated with a low risk of symptomatic hypermagnesemia. Limitations: Few interventional studies have examined the effect of magnesium-based therapy on muscle cramps in patients receiving hemodialysis and most were nonrandomized, pre-post study designs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hypomagnesemia has been associated with febrile neutropenia (FN) in pediatric patients receiving cisplatin-based chemotherapy (CDDPBC). The primary aim was to determine whether oral magnesium supplementation reduces FN episodes in pediatric patients with solid tumors treated with CDDPBC. METHOD This randomized clinical trial, with open-label, single-center, parallel group and superiority design was conducted in Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez at Mexico City. Children ≥ 9 years with solid tumors that were to receive a CDDPBC cycle were invited to participate. Each chemotherapy cycle with CDDPBC was randomly assigned to receive oral magnesium supplementation (250 mg/day) or not receive magnesium supplementation (control group). Efficacy was determined by relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) as well as with numbers needed to treat (NNT). Active surveillance was conducted to assess safety in both groups. Analyses were carried out by intention to treat. ClinicalTrials.gov number NCT03449693. RESULTS One hundred and one chemotherapy cycles with CDDPBC were analyzed (50 in the magnesium supplement arm and 51 in control group). Baseline clinical characteristics were similar comparing both groups. Oral magnesium supplementation reduces FN episodes compared to control group [RR 0.53, (95% CI 0.32-0.89), NNT = 4]. In the supplemented group, patients had fewer episodes of septic shock secondary to FN [RR 0.43, (95% CI 0.02-0.94), NNT = 6] and FN appeared on average 5 days later (p = 0.031). Hypomagnesemia episodes and adverse events were similar across both groups. CONCLUSION Oral supplementation with magnesium reduces FN episodes neutropenia in pediatric patients with solid tumors treated with CDDPBC.

High-precision isotopic analysis of Mg and Ca in biological samples using multi-collector ICP-mass spectrometry after their sequential chromatographic isolation - Application to the characterization of the body distribution of Mg and Ca isotopes in mice. Abstract
A sequential chromatographic separation procedure for subsequent high-precision isotopic analysis of Mg and Ca via multi-collector ICP-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) from a single aliquot of sample was developed and used for a variety of animal/human biofluids and tissues. The procedure consists of a one-stage Mg isolation protocol (for most of the sample types) and a three-stage isolation protocol for Ca. AG50W-X8 strong cation exchange resin was used for the isolation of Mg and Ca, while Sr-resin was used to additionally purify the Ca fraction from Sr. Potential effects on the Mg isotope ratio measurement results caused by the possible presence of concomitant matrix elements (Cu, Fe, Zn, Ca) were systematically evaluated. δ26Mg values were biased for a Fe/Mg ratio > 0.13 and a Ca/Mg ratio > 1.5, resulting in a shift towards a lighter Mg isotopic composition. It was shown that the Mg isotope ratio data for Mg standards, the isotopic reference materials ERM-AE143 and IRMM 009 and the biological samples investigated are located on a mass-dependent fractionation line. Biological reference materials and commercially available serum samples were analyzed for both their Mg and Ca isotope ratios. For some of the biomaterials analyzed, the Ca isotope ratio data as obtained using MC-ICP-MS were further validated via their determination using double-spike thermal ionization mass spectrometry (DS-TIMS). The expanded uncertainty for δ26Mg was ≤ 0.12‰ and for δ44/42Ca ≤ 0.29‰. Biological fluids and tissues of mice were analyzed to characterize the body distribution of the stable isotopes of Mg and Ca. The isotopic variability among the body compartments was about 1.5‰ for Mg and 1.0‰ for Ca. Among the tissues explored, muscle tissue shows the lightest Mg and Ca isotopic compositions and liver the heaviest Mg and Ca isotopic compositions, respectively.

Abstract
Nutrient deficiencies are well recognized as secondary consequences of celiac disease (CD) and closely related to the clinical presentation of affected patients. Despite their clinical significance, consensus is lacking on the pattern and frequency of nutrient deficiencies in CD, the usefulness of their assessment at the time of diagnosis and during follow-up. This review aims to provide an overview of nutrient deficiencies among pediatric and adult CD patients at diagnosis and on a gluten-free diet (GFD), and their potential causes in CD. Secondly, we review their impact on CD management strategies including the potential of nutrient supplementation. A search of Medline, Pubmed and Embase until January 2019 was performed. Despite a high variability between the reported deficiencies, we noted that nutrient deficiencies occur frequently in children and adults with CD at diagnosis and during treatment with a GFD. Both inadequate dietary intake and/or diminished uptake due to intestinal dysfunction contribute to nutrient deficiencies. Most deficiencies can be restored with (long-term) treatment with a GFD and/or supplementation. However, some of them persist while others may become even more prominent during GFD. Our results indicate a lack of comprehensive evidence on the clinical efficacy of nutrient supplementation in CD management highlighting the need for further studies.

Abstract
We discuss the latest developments in alternative battery systems based on sodium, magnesium, zinc and aluminum. In each case, we categorize the individual metals by the overarching cathode material type, focusing on the energy storage mechanism. Specifically, sodium-ion batteries are the closest in technology and chemistry to today's lithium-ion batteries. This lowers the technology transition barrier in the short term, but their low specific capacity creates a long-term problem. The lower reactivity of magnesium makes pure Mg metal anodes much safer than alkali ones. However, these are still reactive enough to be deactivated over time. Alloying magnesium with different metals can solve this problem. Combining this with different cathodes gives good specific capacities, but with a lower voltage (<1.3 V, compared with 3.8 V for Li-ion batteries). Zinc has the lowest theoretical specific capacity, but zinc metal anodes are so stable that they can be used without alterations. This results in comparable capacities to the other materials and can be immediately used in systems where weight is not a problem. Theoretically, aluminum is the most promising alternative, with its high specific capacity thanks to its three-electron redox reaction. However, the trade-off between stability and specific capacity is a problem. After analyzing each option separately, we compare them all via a political, economic, socio-cultural and technological (PEST) analysis. The review concludes with recommendations for future applications in the mobile and stationary power sectors.

Abstract
Magnesium, one of the basic elements for the human body, is necessary for many physiological functions. Magnesium deficiency is widely observed as a result of the reduced nutrient content of foods, over-cooking, diseases, drugs, alcohol, and caffeine consumption. Taking a dietary supplement is necessary magnesium deficiency. It has been demonstrated that absorption of organic magnesium compounds is better than absorption of inorganic compounds. The aim of this study is to investigate transitions to tissues of different organic magnesium compounds in different doses and whether there is a difference in the organic acid-bounded compounds (magnesium citrate and magnesium malate) and the amino acid-bounded compounds (magnesium acetyl taurate and magnesium glycinate), associated with transition and bioavailability. In addition, the effects of split dosages of high doses in a high volume of solvent on tissue magnesium levels are being investigated, because galenic formulation problems are regarded to prepare convenient dosage that can be taken once a day. All magnesium compounds were administered as three different doses, 45, 135, and 405 mg/70 kg elemental magnesium, were given per orally to Balbc mice. In a second set of experiments, 405 mg/70 kg high dose was divided into two doses of 202.5 mg/70 kg each and administered every 12 h. Brain, muscle tissues, and serum magnesium levels measured in all experimental groups and control 24 h later. Brain magnesium levels were found increased in all magnesium acetyl taurate administered subjects. Magnesium citrate increased muscle and brain magnesium levels in a dose-independent manner. We showed that dividing high doses of daily administered magnesium compounds did not sufficiently increase tissue magnesium levels. Although passive paracellular mechanism by solvent drag is the main mechanism of Mg absorption, other factors (electrochemical gradient effects, transcellular transporter mechanisms, magnesium status) should be effective on our results. It is necessary for further research on long-term administration of different magnesium compounds and their effect on other tissues.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg2+) is one of the major elements required to maintain normal metabolism and ionic balances in ocular tissues. The physiological role of Mg2+ is mediated through maintaining the Na+-K+-ATPase on membrane, favoring energy-generating reactions, replication of DNA and protein synthesis. Despite the wide availability of this element, hypomagnesemia has been associated with many human ailments. Recent studies highlighted the association of hypomagnesemia and, thereby, supplementation of Mg2+ in the management of eye diseases. Glaucoma, senile cataract and diabetic retinopathy were associated with low level of extracellular Mg2+. The neurovascular protective effects of Mg2+ mediated through activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase and inhibition of endothelin-1 eventually result in vasodilatation of retinal vessels. Mg2+ can maintain the lens sodium pump activity and antioxidant status and block the calcium channels and release of glutamate in nerve endings. Furthermore, it can prevent the apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells. All these effects contribute to its being a pharmacological agent against ocular diseases. However, clinical trials are scant. This article discusses the role of Mg2+ as a possible therapeutic agent in the management of glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
Mg alloy is suitable for biomedical implants as the mechanical properties of Mg are close to those of human bone. Ca is a major element in bone and Zr has a great grain refinement effect. Hence, we developed Mg-1Ca-0.5Zr alloy (XK105) as a biodegradable biomaterial and investigated its mechanical properties and surface corrosion mechanism. The results showed that heat treatment made the secondary phase homogeneous. Tensile tests showed that the heat treatment increased ductility, and that the tensile stress results in the extrusion direction showed better ductility than that in the transverse direction because of the fiber texture and extrusion characteristics. Electrochemistry test results showed that XK105 after heat treatment had a lower corrosion rate than that before heat treatment and that of pure Mg. XK105 after heat treatment formed a calcium phosphate layer after immersion in simulated body fluid; this layer protects Mg from corrosion. Surface roughening treatment increased corrosion because pits on the surface promoted pitting corrosion. This study developed Mg-1Ca-0.5Zr alloy as a biomedical implant material. The results can be used as a reference for the biomedical material industry.

Abstract
Simple Summary Minerals play an important role in animals’ health and nutritional status and are associated with cortisol, a hormone involved in several physiological processes and with a fundamental role in allostasis, the process of achieving homeostasis. The aim of the present study is to perform a preliminary investigation on the concentration of 19 minerals and cortisol in the hair of red deer coming from two different areas of the Stelvio National Park. Results showed a close association between hair minerals and cortisol concentrations and an effect of deer origin. Hair minerals and cortisol assessment is an easy, rapid, and low cost screening method and it is useful in wildlife management programs, in order to investigate wild animals’ health status, to perform environmental studies, to assess the presence of contaminants in wild species and to determine risks for humans. In addition, it could be helpful in public health programs to estimate contamination risks linked to wild animal meat consumption or to assess the presence of contaminants in food-producing animals. Abstract The aim of the study was to perform an investigation on the concentration of 19 minerals and cortisol in red deer (Cervus elaphus) hair, a matrix that is easy to collect with non-invasive and painless sampling, able to represent an integrative values of long-term substance concentrations, and able to give useful information, also when performed on dead animals, given its extreme stability over time. In the study thirty-five animals were included, coming from two different sides of a valley in the Stelvio National Park, where official water analysis had pointed out elevated concentrations of As in one of the two orographic sides. Hair cortisol concentrations were measured using a RIA(Radio Immuno Assay), while minerals were detected using ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma- Mass Spectrometry). Results showed a negative relationship between cortisol and some mineral concentrations (Li, Co, As, Cd, Cr and Tl) and significant differences in some mineral concentrations between park areas (Al, Co, Cu, Cd and Ni). As, Cr and cortisol differences approached statistical significance. This preliminary study represents a step forward in the study of wildlife allostatic load and a valid method for applications in wildlife management programs, in environmental studies and in public health programs.

Abstract
Hymenaea martiana Hayne belongs to the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae) and presents the popular name of jatobá. It is a tree that demonstrates medicinal purposes and represents a food source in Brazil. The potential contribution of each species to recommended nutrient intakes (DRI) and Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) for children and adults were calculated. A comparison between the quantified contents of micro- and macronutrients Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, S, and Zn in leaves tea and tea of the bark of this plant was made with the recommendation of FDA and ANVISA. General safety regarding metal content (Na, K, Ca, Fe, Zn, and Ni) and nonmetal (P) was assured as none of them exceed the safety limit of the daily intake. However, the content of Mn observed in the teas of H. martiana Hayne is above the UL for tolerable intake level for children aged 1-6 years. There are no limits established for the UL of Cr and S for children and adults. The data on quantification of mineral concentration in the species Hymenaea martiana Hayne obtained can serve as a tool to decide the dosage of preparations from this plant used for medicinal purposes.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the biodegradation behavior of Mg alloy plates in the maxillofacial region. For in vitro analysis, the plates were immersed in saline solution and simulated body fluid. For in vivo, the plates were implanted into the tibia, head, back, abdominal cavity, and femur and assessed at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after implantation. After implantation, the plate volumes and the formed insoluble salt were measured via micro-computed tomography. SEM/EDX analysis of the insoluble salt and histological analysis of the surrounding tissues were performed. The volume loss of plates in the in vitro groups was higher than that in the in vivo groups. The volume loss was fastest in the abdomen, followed by the head, back, tibia, and femur. There were no statistically significant differences in the insoluble salt volume of the all implanted sites. The corrosion of the Mg alloy will be affected to the surrounding tissue responses. The material for the plate should be selected based on the characteristic that Mg alloys are decomposed relatively easily in the maxillofacial region.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several supplements are purported to promote muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in healthy subjects, or to prevent muscle wasting in atrophying situations (e.g., ageing or disuse periods). However, their effectiveness remains unclear. METHODS This review summarizes the available evidence on the beneficial impacts of several popular supplements on muscle mass or strength. RESULTS Among the supplements tested, nitrate and caffeine returned sufficient evidence supporting their acute beneficial effects on muscle strength, whereas the long-term consumption of creatine, protein and polyunsaturated fatty acids seems to consistently increase or preserve muscle mass and strength (evidence level A). On the other hand, mixed or unclear evidence was found for several popular supplements including branched-chain amino acids, adenosine triphosphate, citrulline, β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate, minerals, most vitamins, phosphatidic acid or arginine (evidence level B), weak or scarce evidence was found for conjugated linoleic acid, glutamine, resveratrol, tribulus terrestris or ursolic acid (evidence level C), and no evidence was found for other supplements such as ornithine or α-ketoglutarate (evidence D). Of note, although most supplements appear to be safe when consumed at typical doses, some adverse events have been reported for some of them (e.g., caffeine, vitamins, α-ketoglutarate, tribulus terrestris, arginine) after large intakes, and there is insufficient evidence to determine the safety of many frequently used supplements (e.g., ornithine, conjugated linoleic acid, ursolic acid). CONCLUSION In summary, despite their popularity, there is little evidence supporting the use of most supplements, and some of them have been even proven ineffective or potentially associated with adverse effects.

Abstract
While general recommendations are for 300-mg magnesium intake a day, an advanced low-dose formulation of magnesium chloride, ChronoMag®, was designed to provide 100 mg of magnesium element, thus decreasing the risk of gastrointestinal side effects and allowing long-term supplementation in health conditions related to low magnesium levels. The present study aimed to compare magnesium release profile and bioavailability between this patented low-dose continuous-release magnesium chloride tablet (100 mg magnesium element) and a reference tablet at the usually prescribed dose (300 mg magnesium element). Magnesium release profile was determined by dissolving the tablets in solutions simulating the gastrointestinal tract environment. A randomized double-blind crossover controlled trial of ChronoMag® versus reference tablet (3 × 100 mg magnesium element tablets) in 12 normo-magnesemic healthy volunteers was conducted to evaluate the bioavailability of the patented magnesium chloride tablets (two 50 mg magnesium tablets, once-a-day intake). While the reference tablet released 100% of its magnesium within 1 h of dissolution, release from the magnesium chloride formulation was continuous for 6 h. Cumulative urinary magnesium levels compared to those with the reference tablet were 76% (0-5 h), 89% (0-10 h), and 87% (0-24 h). Elimination after 24 h was fairly similar with both supplements. Our results suggest that the new magnesium chloride formulation, providing continuous low-dose magnesium release throughout the gastrointestinal tract, improves absorption and bioavailability. This formulation conforms to the physiological mechanism of magnesium absorption throughout the digestive tract, allowing high absorption, and may improve gastrointestinal tolerance in long-term use.

Abstract
Background: In order to save potable water, this study aims to evaluate the contamination of soil and Capsicum annuum L. (chilli) watered with urban wastewater (sewage) pre-treated by various wetland systems. Methods: The appropriateness of wetland outflow for irrigation when applying reused wastewater with high contamination of minerals and pathogens was assessed. The impact of wastewaters pre-treated by various wetlands on soil and harvest was tested in terms of mineral and biological contamination risk. Results: The wetlands met the standards for irrigation water for most water quality variables. However, the thresholds for key water quality parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) exceeded. The highest values for total coliforms, ammonium-nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were 157,072 CFU/100 mL, 8.5 mg/L, 5.0 mg/L, and 7.0 mg/L, respectively. The harvest was moderately polluted only by zinc according to vegetable quality standards (threshold of 50 mg/kg). Zinc concentrations for Filters 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 were 35.8, 60.6, 65.1, 65.5 and 53.2 mg/kg, respectively. No bacterial contamination was detected. Conclusions: Treatment of domestic wastewater applying constructed wetlands and subsequent recycling of the treated wastewater for irrigation of crops is a good substitute to the traditional application of drinking water for irrigation purposes.

Abstract
Background: Adverse reactions associated with Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) are usually the result of unpredictable active/toxic ingredients, inaccurate or mistaken beliefs, or poor supervision. The herb that most commonly induces severe adverse effects in Hong Kong and China is aconite root. More than 200 species of Aconitum plants are used for medicinal purposes, with aconite roots producing analgesic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, and anti-tumor effects. The active components are alkaloids; these can be toxic, but CHM processing methods lower their toxicity and increase the pharmacological efficacy. However, aconite poisoning can result from inadequate decoction time or exceeding the recommended dose. Case Report: Here we report the case of a 92-year-old woman who presented with life-threatening bradycardia and hypotension. This started 1 h after she inappropriately consumed a herbal decoction containing Fuzi for mood fluctuation and health maintenance; Fuzi, an aconite root, has known cardiotoxicity. Electrocardiography showed supraventricular abnormalities, including sinus bradycardia and low-amplitude P waves. After an infusion of normal saline and inotropic agents for 25 h, the clinical manifestations subsided, her sinus rhythm returned to normal, and she was discharged. At follow-up 2 weeks later, she was in good health and had ceased taking any CHM. Conclusions: Standardized processing methods, stringent regulations, and cooperation between health professions can ensure medication safety and establish a fully-fledged operating process for these valuable drugs. We hope this report will help establish correct attitudes toward CHM and will assist Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners to become more familiar with Aconitum plants.

Abstract
To examine the association between serum magnesium and incident heart failure (HF) in older men and investigate potential pathways including cardiac function, inflammation and lung function. Prospective study of 3523 men aged 60–79 years with no prevalent HF or myocardial infarction followed up for a mean period of 15 years, during which 268 incident HF cases were ascertained. Serum magnesium was inversely associated with many CVD risk factors including prevalent atrial fibrillation, lung function (FEV1) and markers of inflammation (IL-6), endothelial dysfunction (vWF) and cardiac dysfunction [NT-proBNP and cardiac troponin T (cTnT)]. Serum magnesium was inversely related to risk of incident HF after adjustment for conventional CVD risk factors and incident MI. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for HF in the 5 quintiles of magnesium groups were 1.00, 0.72 (0.50, 1.05), 0.85 (0.59, 1.26), 0.76 (0.52, 1.11) and 0.56 (0.36, 0.86) respectively [p (trend) = 0.04]. Further adjustment for atrial fibrillation, IL-6, vWF and FEV1 attenuated the association but risk remained significantly reduced in the top quintile (≥ 0.87 mmol/l) compared with the lowest quintile [HR 0.62 (0.40, 0.97)]. Adjustment for NT-proBNP and cTnT attenuated the association further [HR 0.70 (0.44, 1.10)]. The benefit of high serum magnesium on HF risk was most evident in men with ECG evidence of ischaemia [HR 0.29 (0.13, 0.68)]. The potential beneficial effect of high serum magnesium was partially explained by its favourable association with CVD risk factors. Further studies are needed to investigate whether serum magnesium supplementation in older adults may protect from the development of HF.
