Ecotoxicological risk assessment for sediments of Çavuşlu stream in Giresun, Turkey: association between garbage disposal facility and metallic accumulation

Effects of microplastics on sedimentary greenhouse gas emissions and underlying microbiome-mediated mechanisms: A comparison of sediments from distinct altitudes

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems that can profoundly affect carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, the impact mechanisms of MPs on sedimentary greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at distinct altitudes remain poorly elucidated. Here, we investigated the effects of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polylactic acid (PLA) on sedimentary CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions at distinct altitudes of the Yellow River. PVC increased the relative abundance of denitrifiers (e.g., Xanthobacteriaceae, Rhodocyclaceae) to promote N2O emissions, whereas PLA reduced the abundance of AOA gene and denitrifiers (e.g., Pseudomonadaceae, Sphingomonadaceae), impeding N2O emissions. Both PVC and PLA stimulated the growth of microbes (Saprospiraceae, Aquabacterium, and Desulfuromonadia) associated with complex organics degradation, leading to increased CO2 emissions. Notably, the concurrent inhibition of PLA on mcrA and pmoA genes led to its minimal impact on CH4 emissions. High-altitude MQ sediments, characterized by abundant substrate and a higher abundance of functional genes (AOA, AOB, nirK, mcrA), demonstrated higher GHG emissions. Conversely, lower microbial diversity rendered the low-altitude LJ microbial community more susceptible to PVC, leading to a more significant promotion on GHG emissions. This study unequivocally confirms that MPs exacerbate GHG emissions via microbiome-mediated mechanisms, providing a robust theoretical foundation for microplastic control to mitigate global warming.

Metals and phosphorus in the sediments of streams emptying into the Çanakkale strait (Dardanelles): Spatial distribution, pollution status, risk assessment and source identification

The Çanakkale Strait is exposed to various pollutants due to its strategic location. It is thought that stream inputs may contribute significantly to metal and phosphorus (P) accumulation in the strait. In this study, the spatial distribution, pollution status, ecological risks and possible sources of twelve metals and P in the sediments of seven important streams emptying into the strait were analyzed. The results showed that Zn (226 mg/kg), Ba (67.2 mg/kg) and Pb (10.4 mg/kg) concentrations were higher in the Umurbey Stream due to mining activities, while P concentration (295 mg/kg) was higher in the Çanakkale Stream due to both agricultural activities and domestic wastewater discharges. Modified hazard quotient (mHQ), enrichment factor (EF) and contamination factor (Cf) values revealed that Zn and Pb showed high and moderate contamination in the US3 and US4 sampling sites of the Umurbey Stream, respectively. Similarly, P showed moderate contamination in the ÇS3 site of the Çanakkale Stream. Nemerow pollution index (NPI) showed that the US3 (2.41) and US4 (4.28) sites of the Umurbey Stream were slightly and moderately polluted, respectively. Toxic risk index (TRI) values demonstrated that the sediments in only the US4 site (5.17) of the Umurbey Stream may pose a low toxic risk due to high Zn content. Similarly, based on comparison results with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), it was found that high Zn content may lead to adverse effects on sediment-dwelling organisms in the US4 site. In addition, the PEC-quotient value in the US4 site exceeded 0.5, confirming the finding that the sediments in this site could be toxic to benthic organisms. Finally, correlation, cluster and factor analyzes were used to determine possible sources of elements. Mining activities, natural sources and mixed sources (agricultural activities and natural sources) were identified as the main sources of elements in the sediments of the streams. This study can provide an important reference for evaluating stream sediment pollution and managing marine pollution.

Ecotoxicological effects of tungsten on celery (Apium graveolens L) and pepper (Capsicum spp.)

Background

Tungsten (W) is an emerging heavy metal pollutant, yet research remains scarce on the biomonitor and sensitive biomarkers for W contamination.

Methods

In this study, celery and pepper were chosen as study subjects and subjected to exposure cultivation in solutions with five different levels of W. The physiological and biochemical toxicities of W on these two plants were systematically analyzed. The feasibility of utilizing celery and pepper as biomonitor organisms for W contamination was explored and indicative biomarkers were screened.

Results

The results indicated that W could inhibit plants' root length, shoot height, and fresh weight while concurrently promoting membrane lipid peroxidation. Additionally, W enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) to counteract oxidative damage. From a physiological perspective, pepper exhibited potential as a biomonitor for W contamination. Biochemical indicators suggested that SOD could serve as a sensitive biomarker for W in celery, while TAOC and POD were more suitable for the roots and leaves of pepper. In conclusion, our study investigated the toxic effects of W on celery and pepper, contributing to the understanding of W's environmental toxicity. Furthermore, it provided insights for selecting biomonitor organisms and sensitive biomarkers for W contamination.

Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite modified the growth of Ligusticum Chuanxiong and restrained the Cd migration in the soil-plant system

Ligusticum Chuanxiong is an essential medicinal and edible plant, but it is highly susceptible to the enrichment of soil Cadmium (Cd), which seriously affects its medical safety. However, the control of Cd uptake by Ligusticum Chuanxiong is little reported. In this study, we reported that a green Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite (MPAL) effectively promoted Ligusticum Chuanxiong growth, and restrained the Cd uptake by Ligusticum Chuanxiong both in the mildly contaminated soil (M-Soil) and severely contaminated soil (S-Soil). The experimental results demonstrated that the application of MPAL significantly increased the biomass and antioxidant enzyme activity of Ligusticum Chuanxiong. In the M-Soil, the Cd content in the roots, stems, and leaves of Ligusticum Chuanxiong decreased markedly by 82.46-86.66%, 64.17-71.73%, and 64.94-76.66%, respectively, after the MPAL treatment. In the S-Soil, MPAL application decreased the Cd content in roots, stems, and leaves by 89.43-98.92%, 24.19-86.22%, and 67.14-77.90%, respectively. Based on Diethylenetriamine Pentaacetic Acid (DTPA) extraction, the immobilization efficiency of MPAL for Cd in soils ranged from 22.01% to 77.04%. Additionally, the HOAc extractable Cd was transformed into reducible and oxidizable fractions. Furthermore, MPAL enhanced the activities of soil alkaline phosphatase, and urease, but decreased sucrase activity. Environmental toxicological analysis indicated that MPAL reduced the potential ecological risk of Cd in the soil. These findings revealed that MPAL can effectively reduce Cd accumulation in Ligusticum Chuanxiong and promote plant growth, suggesting its potential as a viable amendment for remediating Cd-contaminated soils.

Origin and comprehensive risk assessment of heavy metals in surface sediments along the Caspian Sea

Metal concentrations (Cu, Zn, Cr, Fe, As, Pb, Ni, V, and Co) in surface sediments were determined in the southern Caspian Sea. Sediment pollution was investigated using geochemical index such as Enrichment Factor (EF) and ecological risk indices like modified Hazard Quotient (mHQ) and Toxic Risk Index (TRI). The highest calculated geochemical index was observed in sediments near the cities of Chalus and Ramsar, which are highly polluted due to human activities. The ecological potential indices indicated that Ni contents in all the studied stations would impose harmful effects on aquatic organisms, while other metals had a low risk. Principal component and cluster analyses suggested that As and Pb emanated from anthropogenic sources, and other metals probably originated from lithogenic sources.

A Monte Carlo simulation-based health risk assessment of heavy metals in soils of the tropical region in southern China

The disturbance of ecological stability may take place in tropical regions due to the elevated biomass density resulting from heavy metal and other contaminant pollution. In this study, 62 valid soil samples were collected from Sanya. Source analysis of heavy metals in the area was carried out using absolute principal component-multiple linear regression receptor modelling (APCS-MLR); the comprehensive ecological risk of the study area was assessed based on pollution sources; the Monte-Carlo model was used to accurately predict the health risk of pollution sources in the study area. The results showed that: The average contents of soil heavy metals Cu, Ni and Cd in Sanya were 5.53, 6.56 and 11.66 times higher than the background values of heavy metals. The results of soil geo-accumulation index (Igeo) showed that Cr, Mo, Mn and Zn were unpolluted to moderately polluted, Cu and Ni were moderately polluted, and Cd was moderately polluted to strongly polluted. The main sources of heavy metal pollution were natural sources (57.99%), agricultural sources (38.44%) and traffic sources (3.57%). Natural and agricultural sources were jointly identified as priority control pollution sources and Cd was the priority control pollution element for soil ecological risk. Heavy metal content in Sanya did not pose a non-carcinogenic risk to the population, but there was a carcinogenic risk to children. The element Zn had a high carcinogenic risk to children, and was a priority controlling pollutant element for the risk of human health, with agricultural sources as the priority controlling pollutant source.

Metal pollution assessment in the surface sediments of a river system in Türkiye: Integrating toxicological risk assessment and source identification

This study investigates potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the surface sediments of the Abdal River system, a critical water source for Samsun province, Türkiye, due to the presence of the Çakmak Dam. PTE concentrations, measured in mg/kg, show significant variability: Hg (0.03) < Cd (0.26) < As (10.98) < Pb (13.88) < Cu (48.61) < Ni (62.45) < Zn (70.97) < Cr (96.28) < Mn (1015) < Fe (38357). Seasonal variations were observed, in particular increased concentrations of As, Cd and Pb in summer (p < 0.05). Contamination and ecological risk indices (mHQ, EF, Igeo, CF, PLI, Eri, mCd, NPI, PERI, MPI, and TRI) indicate moderate to low levels of contamination, suggesting potential ecological effects. Health risk assessments suggest minimal risks to human health from sediment PTEs. Statistical analyses (PCC, PCA and HCA) improve the understanding of the sediment environment and contamination sources, while the coefficient of variation assists in source identification.

Appraisal of metallic accumulation in the surface sediment of a fish breeding dam in Türkiye: A stochastical approach to ecotoxicological risk assessment

This study examines the levels and patterns of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in surface sediment of Almus Dam Lake (ADL), a key fish breeding site in Türkiye. PTE concentrations in sediment were ranked: Hg (0.05 ± 0.01) < Cd (0.16 ± 0.01) < Pb (9.34 ± 1.42) < As (18.75 ± 15.65) < Cu (63.30 ± 15.17) < Ni (72.64 ± 20.54) < Zn (86.66 ± 11.95) < Cr (108.35 ± 36.40) < Mn (1008 ± 151) < Fe (53,998 ± 6468), with no significant seasonal or spatial differences. Ecological risk indices (mHQ, EF, Igeo, CF, PLI, Eri, mCd, NPI, PERI, MPI, and TRI) showed low contamination levels. Health risk assessments, including LCR, HQ, and THI, indicated minimal risks to humans from sediment PTEs. Statistical analyses (PCA, HCA, SCC) identified natural, transportation, and anthropogenic PTE sources, with slight impacts from agriculture and fish farming. This research underlines contamination status of ADL and emphasizes the need for targeted management strategies, offering critical insights for environmental safeguarding.

Ecological and human health risk from exposure to metal contaminated sediments in a subtropical river affected by anthropogenic activities: A case study from river Yamuna

Heavy metal enrichment in river sediments poses a significant risk to human and aquatic health. The Yamuna River faces severe challenges due to untreated industrial and domestic wastewater discharge. The study evaluates sediment metal content, ecological and human health risks, and potential sources. Results showed Cd and Pb exhibited moderate to severe contamination and displayed ecological risk based on contamination factor, enrichment factor, and potential ecological risk. According to synergistic indices (pollution load index, PINemerow, toxic risk index, contamination security index, mean probable effects level quotients, and probability of toxicity), the sediment in the Yamuna River doesn't seem to have a risk or enrichment from combined metals. Cd and Pb mainly originate from anthropogenic sources. Hazard index (< 1) and carcinogenic risk (2.2 × 10-7 to 4.7 × 10-5) assessments suggest metal didn't pose any risk to humans exposed to sediment. The present study aids in developing pollution control strategies for the Yamuna River.

Enhancing water quality and ecosystems of reclaimed water-replenished river: A case study of Dongsha River, Beijing, China

The use of reclaimed water for urban river replenishment has raised concerns regarding its impact on water quality and aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to reveal the improvements seen in an urban river undergoing a practical water eco-remediation after being replenished with reclaimed water. A one-year monitoring of water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton was carried out in Dongsha River undergoing eco-remediation in Beijing, China. The results showed that compared to the unrestored river, the concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TP, and TN decreased by 28.22 ± 7.88 %, 40.24 ± 11.77 %, 44.17 ± 17.29 %, and 28.66 ± 10.39 % in the restoration project area, respectively. The concentration of Chlorophyll-a in the restoration area was maintained below 40 μg/L. During summer, when algal growth is vigorous, the density of Cyanophyta in the unrestored river decreased from 46.84 × 104cells/L to 16.32 × 104cells/L in the restored area, while that of Chlorophyta decreased from 41.61 × 104cells/L to 11.87 × 104cells/L, a reduction of 65.16 % and 71.47 %, respectively. The dominant phytoplankton species were replaced with Bacillariophyta, such as Synedra sp. and Nitzschia sp., indicating that the restoration of aquatic plants reduces the risk of Cyanophyta blooms. Zooplankton species also changed in the restoration area, especially during summer. The density of pollution-tolerant Rotifer and Protozoa decreased by 31.06 % and 27.22 %, while the density of clean water indicating Cladocera increased by 101.19 %. We further calculated the diversity and evenness index of phytoplankton and zooplankton within and outside the restoration area. The results showed that the Shannon-Weaver index for phytoplankton and zooplankton in the restoration area was 2.1 and 1.91, which was higher than those in the river (1.84 and 1.82). This further confirmed that aquatic plant restoration has positive effects. This study can provide a practical reference and theoretical basis for the implementation of water ecological restoration projects in other reclaimed water rivers in China.

Evaluation of pollution levels in sediments from Lake Edku, Egypt using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

The concentrations of 11 heavy metals in sediments from Lake Edku, Egypt were determined using LA-ICP-MS. The average concentrations of elements occurred in the order of Fe > V > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Pb > As > Sn > Mo with respective values of 4.67 %, 104.8, 77.9, 76.6, 59.2, 52, 27.8, 19.8, 4.14, 2.24, and 1.45 μg/g. Several pollution indices were used to evaluate individual and cumulative contamination levels. All HMs were found to be in the deficiency to minimal enrichment range based on the enrichment factor. The contamination factor indicated low contamination levels of Cr and As, low to moderate contamination levels of Fe, Ni, Zn, Mo, Sn, and Pb, and moderate contamination levels of Co and Cu. The pollution load index and contamination degree indicated the sediments to be polluted and moderately polluted, respectively.

A retrospective analysis of heavy metals and multi elements in the Yangtze River Basin: Distribution characteristics, migration tendencies and ecological risk assessment

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world with more than 6300 km, covering 0.4 billion people. However, the aquatic ecosystem of the Yangtze River has been seriously damaged in the past decades due to a rapid development of economic and industrialization along the coast. In this study, we first established a dataset of fifty elements, including nine common heavy metals (HMs) and forty-one other elements, in the Yangtze River Basin through the collection of historical data from 2000 to 2020, and then analyzed their spatiotemporal distribution characteristics. The results indicated that the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), a region formed by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), may act as a sink for these elements from upstream regions. The concentrations of seven elements in surface water and 13 elements in sediment obviously increased from the upstream region of the TGR to the TGR. In addition, ten elements in the surface water and 5 elements in the sediments clearly decreased, possibly because of the interception effects of the TGD. On a timescale, Cr obviously tended to migrate from the water phase to the sediment; Pb tended to migrate from the sediment to the water phase. In the ecological risk assessment, all common HMs in surface water were supposed to have negligible risks as protecting 90 % of aquatic organisms; Cd (210.2), Hg (58.0) and As (43.1) in sediment posed high and moderate ecological risks using the methodology of the potential ecological risk index. Furthermore, Hunan Province is at considerable risk according to the sum of the potential risk index (314.8) due to Cd pollution (66.8 %). These fundamental data and results will support follow-up control strategies for elements and policies related to aquatic ecosystem protection in the Yangtze River Basin.

New insights into the role of sediments in microplastic inputs from the Northern Dvina River (Russia) to the White and Barents Seas

The Northern Dvina River is one of the main sources of microplastic pollution entering to the White and Barents Seas. The coastal and bottom sediments of this river play an important role as a transfer link of microplastics. With Py-GC/MS and μFT-IR methods, it was found that the sediments contain up to 350 mg/kg or 650 particles/kg of microplastic (dry weight). The unique hydrologic conditions of the river branching area contribute to the formation of a microplastic pollution hotspot. The hotspot accumulates >30 % of microplastic pollution, mainly ABS plastic particles smaller than 0.3 mm with roughness and cracks, which increases the hazard class (from II to IV) of microplastic pollution. Obtained data and high annual variability of pollution indicates that this area acts as a place of accumulation, degradation and gradual release of microplastics into the White and Barents Seas, i.e. into the Arctic region.

Heavy metal migration dynamics and solid-liquid distribution strategy in abandoned tailing soils

The tailings soil originating from an abandoned sulfur-iron mine in Sichuan Province, China, exhibits elevated concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) and possesses limited soil conservation capacity. Variability soil particle size fractions (PSFs) contributes to an increased risk of HMs ion migration. Existing research on HMs behavior has focused on the bulk soil scale, resulting in a dearth of comprehensive information concerning different particle sizes and colloid scales. We collected soil samples from upstream source (XWA), migration path (XWB), and downstream farmland (XWC) of an abandoned tailing and categorized into sand, silt, clay, colloid and dissolved, respectively. The investigation primarily aimed to elucidate the solid-liquid distribution trade-off strategies of soil HMs along migration pathway. Results show that PSFs composition predominantly influences HMs solid-liquid distribution. In the mining area, large particles serve as the principal component for HMs enrichment. However, along the migration pathway, the proportion of highly mobile fine particles increases, shifting HMs from solid to liquid phase. Furthermore, inorganic elements such as Mg, Al, and Fe influence on HMs distribution within PSFs through various reactions, whereas organic matter and glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) also exert regulatory roles. Increasing the proportion of large particles can reduce the risk of HMs migration.

Spatiotemporal variations, health risk assessment, and sources of potentially toxic elements in potamic water of the Anday Stream Basin (Türkiye), Black Sea Region

Monitoring and protecting freshwater habitats are paramount for a sustainable water management perspective. This study investigated potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the potamic water of the Anday Stream Basin (Türkiye), Black Sea Region, for a hydrological year (from May 2020 to April 2021). Among PTEs, the highest average values were recorded for sodium (Na) at 41.3 mg/L and the lowest for mercury (Hg) at 0.009 μg/L and noted under quality guidelines. The stream was found to be at the level of "Low Heavy Metal Pollution" and "Low Contamination" based on the ecotoxicological risk indices. The highest calculated hazard quotient (HQ) value of 1.21E-02 for Cd was noted in the children via the dermal pathway and the lowest of 6.91E-06 for Fe in adults via the ingestion pathway. Results revealed a higher hazard index (HI) value of 1.50E-02 for Cd to children and the lowest of 1.98E-05 for Fe to adults. As a result of applying agricultural risk indices, the stream showed sodium adsorption ratio values less than 6 and was found to be "Excellent" for agriculture. However, the sodium percentage values were less than 20 and found "Permissible" and the magnesium hazard > 50 and noted as "Unsuitable" for agriculture. Statistical analysis revealed that natural factors mainly attributed to PTE contamination of the Anday Stream Basin.

Magnetic susceptibility in the assessment of toxic heavy metal elements in the surface sediments of Inner Ambon Bay, Maluku province, Indonesia

The Inner Ambon Bay (IAB) is an important area for the economic development of the city of Ambon, one of only a few urban areas in eastern Indonesia. This study is intended to monitor the anthropogenic impact on IAB by employing combined rock magnetic and geochemical analyses on 20 samples collected from IAB and the surrounding rivers. Magnetic susceptibility values of samples in the IAB averaged 26.37× 10-8 m3/kg, which is relatively high and comparable to that of contaminated coastal environments. Magnetic susceptibility correlated positively with certain metals such as Cr, Co, Ni, and Mn but negatively with Hg. Geochemical analyses showed that Hg and Ag contents were relatively high but pose only moderate risk to the environment based on the geo-accumulation index. Furthermore, the potential ecological risk index (PERI) showed that there were two points that showed moderate ecological risk. Multivariate statistical analysis (principal component analysis (PCA), Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA)) outlined that the metallic accumulation in the sediments of IAB was related to lithological, geological, and anthropogenic impacts. Therefore, oil spills and household waste are likely major reasons for anthropogenic pollution in the sediments of the IAB.

Sediment-associated microplastics in Chilika lake, India: Highlighting their prevalence, polymer types, possible sources, and ecological risks

The primary objective of this research was to assess microplastics (MPs) in the sediments of Chilika lake. MPs were extracted from 22 sediment samples using the density separation method combined with vacuum pump filtration. A stereo-zoom microscope and Raman spectroscopy were employed to identify the sediment-associated MPs. The total MPs collected from all 22 sites was 440 ± 3.53 particles kg-1 wet sediments, with sizes ranging between 50 and 500 μm. In terms of morphology, fibers and fragments emerged as the dominant MP types, with counts of 210 ± 1.66 and 175 ± 1.76 particles kg-1 wet sediments, respectively. Raman spectroscopy verified the presence of various MP polymers in the sediments, predominantly HDPE (37 %), followed by PS (20 %), PET (18 %), PA (11 %), PP (7 %), and PC (7 %). A notable color variation was observed in MPs; black being the most prevalent (38.8 %), succeeded by blue (19.5 %), green (11.8 %), white (11.5 %), red (10.6 %), and transparent (7.5 %). ANOVA results indicated significant (p > 0.05) variations in MP abundance across the 22 sampling locations. However, principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression analysis indicated that water quality parameters did not significantly influence MP abundance, yet it was found that MP retention was higher in fine-grained sediments like clay and silt. The leading sources of MPs in Chilika lake were found to be aquafarming, trailed by river and sewage discharges, fishing activities, antifouling coatings and tourism. Additionally, the pollution load index (PLI) was employed to gauge the ecological risks, categorizing the lake under risk category 1, which implies a minimal level of MPs pollution. This research aims to serve as an early warning system for MPs pollution in productive brackish water habitats globally, including Chilika lake, guiding policymakers towards appropriate management strategies and preventive measures.

Temporal variation of water quality parameters in the lacustrine of the Thrace Region, Northwest Türkiye

Thrace is a part of the Marmara Region northwest of Türkiye. This region hosts several lentic ecosystems used for irrigation and drinking water supply. The present study was conducted to analyze the temporal distributions of water quality parameters (WQPs) of lentic ecosystems (lacustrine habitats), including lakes (L1-L2), reservoirs (R1-R12), and ponds (P1-P19) of the Thrace Region. Thirty-three lacustrine habitats were identified in the region. Freshwaters were collected in the wet (end of winter) and dry (end of summer) seasons of 2021-2022 and tested for 12 WQPs. Data was evaluated for the water quality index (WQI) and nutrient pollution index (NPI) and their overall quality level. For the evaluation of non-carcinogenic health risk indices of WQPs, the chronic daily index (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) were applied. Cluster analysis (CA), Pearson correlation index (PCI), and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to classify the lacustrine habitats and identify the source of WQPs. The average values were as follows: 9.28 mg/L for dissolved oxygen (DO), 94.6% for oxygen (O2) saturation, 9.29 for pH, 613 μS/cm for electrical conductivity (EC), 3.96 NTU for turbidity, 358 mg/L for total dissolved solids (TDS), 3.17 mg/L for nitrate (NO3), 0.05 mg/L for nitrite (NO2), 1.01 mg/L for phosphate (PO4), 78.5 mg/L for sulfate (SO4), and 102 mg/L for chloride (Cl). Results showed a significant increase in WQPs, including NO3, NO2, and PO4, in the wet season, while the salinity decreased from the dry to wet season. Results revealed that HI values of water contaminants in lacustrine habitats were noted to be less than one. Based on determined WQPs, the present study recommends using lacustrine water habitats for irrigation, drinking, and other domestic and industrial purposes.

Evaluation of physical and chemical characteristics of wastewater and sludge of Zahedan urban wastewater treatment plant for reuse

Following the water shortage in the world, the use of wastewater as a sustainable resource has been considered in large volume. The study conducted to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the wastewater and sludge of the Zahedan urban wastewater treatment plant showed that the wastewater and sludge treatment system of the treatment plant has high efficiency and effectiveness in removing the investigated parameters. The investigated parameters in the effluent included Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and Total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, temperature, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, pH, zinc, cobalt, lead and copper. Also, the investigated parameters in the sludge included Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), Mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), pH, electrical conductivity and heavy metals. The results showed that the average concentration of metals in the treated effluent is Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd ،and Chemical oxygen demand and Biochemical oxygen demand in the effluent of this treatment plant are on average 171 and 44.4 mg/L, respectively, and its discharge in surface water is limited, but it can be applied for agriculture. Also, the purified sludge had the necessary standards and could be used as soil or household fertilizer and compost for agricultural land.

Assessing industrial wastewater effluent toxicity using boosting algorithms in machine learning: A case study on ecotoxicity prediction and control strategy development

Trace heavy metals have a tendency to persist in the effluent of industrial wastewater treatment facilities, leading to toxic effects on downstream water bodies. Traditional assessment methods relied on animal testing, but ethical concerns have rendered them unacceptable. An alternative solution is to evaluate wastewater toxicity using trophic-level aquatic organisms as bioassays. However, these bioassay methods involve costly and time-consuming chemical and biological analytical experiments. In this study, an artificial intelligence-powered water quality assessment (AiWA) approach is proposed for predicting industrial effluent ecotoxicity to further enhance the quick and cost-effective ecotoxicity assessment process. Initially, 99 samples were collected from industrial wastewater treatment plants representing 21 different industries in the Republic of Korea. Fourteen parameters were measured, encompassing both physicochemical and ecotoxicological aspects. Boosting algorithms, especially extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), were employed for model development. XGBoost outperformed AdaBoost in terms of model performance. Feature selection analysis revealed that conductivity, copper, lead, selenium, pH, and zinc concentrations were the most suitable inputs for training the boosting model. The innovated XGBoost-based AiWA model demonstrated significantly higher performance (i.e., up to 80%) compared to conventional models with an R2 value of exceeding 0.94 and root mean square error of 3.5 toxicity unit for predicting the integrated toxicity unit (ITU). Additionally, pH and conductivity emerged as crucial indicators for reflecting ecotoxicity levels. Specially, this case study indicated that non-toxic/directly dischargeable levels (TU ≤ 1) were achieved when the pH ranged from 6.8 to 8.4 and the conductivity remained below 1651 μS/cm. These findings are expected to facilitate rapid and cost-effective detection of heavy metal ecotoxicity in industrial wastewater effluents, aiding decision-making in wastewater management.

LC-MS/MS Investigation of nitrosamine impurities in certain Sartan group medicinal products available in Istanbul, Türkiye

Nitrosamines (NAs) are molecules that include the nitroso functional group. In 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received its first report of NAs in pharmaceuticals. The fact that NA impurities are likely human carcinogens is relevant to these compounds. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to NA contaminants above safe limits may raise the risk of cancer. The goal of this article was to assess the amounts of six different NAs in Sartan group medicines purchased from formal pharmacies in Istanbul, Türkiye, using a validated LC-MS/MS assay. An LC-MS/MS-based analytical assay was undertaken. The separation was performed with a HR ODS 150mm×3.0mm and 5-analytical columns, providing effective separation of major peaks from NA impurities. In mobile phase A, formic acid was 0.10% in water, while in mobile phase B, formic acid was 0.10% in methanol. The flow rate was 0.4mL/minute, and the total runtime was 18minutes with the gradient elution mode. The validation was conducted in line with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements. Up to 100μg/L, linearity was determined using correlation coefficients (r2>0.995) for all NAs. The limit of quantification values for all NAs analyses were below 1.0μg/L. The mean recovery value obtained during the spike experiment was 95.18%, demonstrating the accuracy of the procedure. In addition, the accuracy was shown by a certified reference analysis, which yielded relative standard deviation and relative error values of 1.82% and 3.34%, respectively. During the intermediate precision testing, bias and relative standard deviation were 0.96 and 2.87%, respectively. Of the 75 study samples involving Sartan group medical products, no nitrosamine impurities were detected, demonstrating that pharmaceutical companies have adequate medication safety precautions in place in accordance with FDA and European Medicines Agency (EMA) regulations published to prevent NA contaminants in human medicinal products.

Heavy Metal and Trace Element Levels in Hair Samples from Fishermen in Turkey: The Fish/Ermen Heavy Metal Study (FHMS)

Toxic chemicals from polluted seas can enter the human body through seafood consumption and cause health problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of selected heavy metals and trace elements among fishermen who frequently consumed seafood and controls who consumed seafood less frequently in four provinces on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, which is heavily polluted by industrial activities. Fourteen elements (antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, vanadium, and zinc) were analyzed in hair samples using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer method. Levels of arsenic (0.147 ± 0.067 µg/g vs. 0.129 ± 0.070 µg/g, p = 0.025), chromium (0.327 ± 0.096 µg/g vs. 0.269 ± 0.116 µg/g, p < 0.01), nickel (0.469 ± 0.339 µg/g vs. 0.403 ± 0.368 µg/g, p = 0.015), strontium (1.987 ± 1.241 µg/g vs. 1.468 ± 1.190 µg/g, p < 0.01), and zinc (103.3 ± 43.1 µg/g vs. 92.7 ± 37.4 µg/g, p = 0.047) were higher in the fisherman group than in the control group. No difference was found between the groups in terms of other elements. The findings suggest that heavy metal-trace element contamination in the Sea of Marmara may increase the exposure levels of individuals to some chemicals through seafood consumption.

Contamination and ecological risk assessment of Cr, As, Cd and Pb in water and sediment of the southeastern Bay of Bengal coast in a developing country

Safe levels of heavy metals in the surface water and sediment of the eastern Bay of Bengal coast have not been universally established. Current study characterized heavy metals such as arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in surface water and sediments of the most important fishing resource at the eastern Bay of Bengal coast, Bangladesh. Both water and sediment samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Considering both of the seasons, the mean concentrations of Cr, As, Cd, and Pb in water samples were 33.25, 8.14, 0.48, and 21.14 μg/L, respectively and in sediment were 30.47, 4.48, 0.20, and 19.98 mg/kg, respectively. Heavy metals concentration in water samples surpassed the acceptable limits of usable water quality, indicating that water from this water resource is not safe for drinking, cooking, bathing, and any other uses. Enrichment factors also directed minor enrichment of heavy metals in sediment of the coast. Other indexes for ecological risk assessment such as pollution load index (PLI), contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), modified contamination degree (mCd), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) also indicated that sediment of the coastal watershed was low contamination. In-depth inventorying of heavy metals in both water and sediment of the study area are required to determine ecosystem health for holistic risk assessment and management.

Depth-dependent microbial communities potentially mediating mercury methylation and various geochemical processes in anthropogenically affected sediments

Metal contamination and other geochemical alterations affect microbial composition and functional activities, disturbing natural biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, it is essential to understand the influences of multi-metal and geochemical interactions on microbial communities. This work investigated the distributions of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and trace metals in the anthropogenically affected sediment. The microbial communities and functional genes profiles were further determined to explore their association with Hg-methylation and geochemical features. The levels of THg and MeHg in sediment cores ranged between 10 and 40 mg/kg and 0.01-0.16 mg/kg, respectively, with an increasing trend toward bottom horizons. The major metals present at all depths were Al, Fe, Mn, and Zn. The enrichment and contamination indices confirmed that the trace metals were highly enriched in the anthropogenically affected sediment. Various functional genes were detected in all strata, indicating the presence of active microbial metabolic processes. The microbial community profiles revealed that the phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Bathyarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota, and the genera Thauera, Woeseia, Methanomethylovorans, and Methanosarcina were the dominant microbes. Correlating major taxa with geochemical variables inferred that sediment geochemistry substantially affects microbial community and biogeochemical cycles. Furthermore, archaeal methanogens and the bacterial phyla Chloroflexi and Firmicutes may play crucial roles in enhancing MeHg levels. Overall, these findings shed new light on the microbial communities potentially involved in Hg-methylation process and other biogeochemical cycles.

Deciphering the dysbiosis caused in the fish microbiota by emerging contaminants and its mitigation strategies-A review

The primary barrier to nutrient absorption in fish is the intestinal epithelium, followed by a community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiota, which can be thought of as a hidden organ. The gastrointestinal microbiota of fish plays a key role in the upholding of overall health by maintaining the homeostasis and disease resistance of the host. However, emerging contaminants as the result of anthropogenic activities have significantly led to disruptions and intestinal dysbiosis in fish. Which probably results in fish mortalities and disrupts the balance of an ecosystem. Therefore, we comprehensively seek to compile the effects and consequences of emerging contaminations on fish intestinal microbiota. Additionally, the mitigation strategies including prebiotics, probiotics, plant-based diet, and Biofloc technology are being outlined. Biofloc technology (BFT) can treat toxic materials, i.e., nitrogen components, and convert them into a useful product such as proteins and demonstrated promising elevating technique for the fish intestinal bacterial composition. However, it remains unclear whether the bacterial isolate is primarily responsible for the BFT's removal of nitrate and ammonia and the corresponding removal mechanism. To answer this, real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with metagenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics techniques probably provides a possible solution.

Comparison of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk assessment in ballast tank sediments based on two applicable reference standards

The potential risks of ballast tank sediments have garnered global attention. This study collected sediment samples from ballast tanks of four transoceanic ships and determined 27 metal(loid) s by GB 5085.6-2007 and 9 metal(loid)s by GB 18668-2002. The pollution characteristics and ecological risk assessment of 8 typical heavy metals measured by both standards were analyzed and compared. Concentrations of Cd, Zn, and As were found to be high in the ballast tank sediments, and attention should also be directed toward Sn and Mn, which were rarely studied in ballast tank sediments. The concentration of Ni had significant differences between the two standards (P < 0.05). The results of ecological risk methods indicate that Cd, Zn, and As pose significant ecological risks. GB 5085.6-2007 demonstrated sensitivity in reflecting the ecological risks of heavy metals. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into establishing a unified standard for heavy metals for future ballast tank sediment management.

Spatio-temporal Sediment Quality Risk Assessment by Using Ecological and Statistical Indicators: A Review of the Upper Sakarya River, Türkiye

In this study, heavy metal accumulation levels (Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, As) in biotic [Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), Squalius pursakensis (Hankó 1925)] and abiotic (sediments) components in a significant freshwater ecosystem in Türkiye were investigated on the basis of seasonal variations using geographic information systems (GIS) and some ecotoxicological risk assessment indices [PLI (pollution load index), PERI (potential ecological risk index), Igeo (geo accumulation index), CF (contamination factor) and BRI (Biological Risk Index)]. GIS-based maps were utilized to depict the distribution of ecotoxicological risk assessment indices to provide a visual explanation by using the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) as an estimation method. Samples were collected seasonally from 12 stations selected on the Upper Sakarya River Basin, which is one of the longest fluvial ecosystems in Türkiye. As a result of applied indices, cadmium was found as the most hazardous heavy metal in terms of PERI and CF, nickel was found as the most hazardous heavy metal in terms of BRI and arsenic was found as the most hazardous heavy metal in terms of Igeo. As a result of applied PCI, 2 statistically significant factors explained 81.31% of the total variance. It was also determined that levels of almost all the investigated heavy metals (except Zn) in muscle tissues of fishes were under the permissible limits of Turkish legislation and the FAO.

Coastal aquaculture in Bangladesh: Sundarbans's role against climate change

The Sundarbans, a natural shield on earth, is one and only place that has many noteworthy environmental and geographical values with breathtaking natural beauties. Near the Sundarbans area, proliferation of aquaculture in this delta contributes appreciably to the national economy. Although aquaculture has become a means of daily livelihood, this sector is nevertheless threatened by a complex of climate change impacts. Cyclones, rising temperatures, rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and erosion make coastal farming difficult. As a panacea, the Sundarbans can play a critical role in preserving coastal aquaculture. As noticed, forests have high potential to recover from unusual consequences of climate change. Practicing safe aquaculture should be opted to refrain from endangering the Sundarbans. This review addressed various climate change impacts on coastal farming and identified the capabilities of the Sundarbans to protect coastal aquaculture from calamitous impacts. Findings show clues for researchers to analyze problems, consequences, and mitigations.

Effects of nitrogen stress on uptake and translocation of organophosphate esters by watermifoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum L.) in an aquatic ecosystem

Although organophosphate esters (OPEs) and nitrogen (N) are normally present in aquatic environments, the effects of the plant uptake, accumulation, and translocation of OPEs in different levels of N remain ambiguous. To better understand these processes, watermifoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum L.) as tested plant was chosen to investigate the effects of different N levels on the uptake and translocation of OPEs by plants in matched water-sediment-plant samples. After two months, we found the root-water concentration factors, root-sediment concentration factors, and translocation factors (TFs) were significantly changed with the levels of N (p < 0.05), implying that the presence of N could alter uptake, accumulation, and translocation of OPEs in M. aquaticum, particularly the process of root absorption. Low concentrations of N could remarkably promote the uptake of OPEs by M. aquaticum. However, when the concentrations of N in water were higher than 200 mg/L, the plants' growth and OPE accumulation by M. aquaticum were obviously inhibited with the elevated N contents. Moreover, the enrichment and environmental transport of OPEs in M. aquaticum seemed to be closely associated with physicochemical parameters; the octanol-water partition coefficient had significant relationships with measured organic carbon-normalized sediment-water partition coefficients and TFs in the present study. Additionally, the substituents and structures of OPEs could also affect the accumulation and translocation of OPEs in M. aquaticum, including the chlorination degree and alkyl chain length. This study could improve our understanding of uptake and translocation of OPEs in aquatic plants under different levels of N.

Human health ambient water quality criteria and risk assessment of pentachlorophenol in Poyang Lake Basin, China

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) has been widely used as an insecticide for killing oncomelania (the intermediate host of schistosome) in China and leads to severe environmental contamination. Poyang Lake, as the largest freshwater lake and bird habitat in China, was once a schistosomiasis epidemic area. In this study, the concentrations of PCP in water and aquatic products from Poyang Lake were determined and analyzed, and then the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) was derived based on native parameters of Poyang Lake basin. Finally, a comprehensive analysis of the health risks of drinking water and different types of aquatic products consumption was carried out. The results showed that PCP concentrations were ranged from 0.01 to 0.43 μg/L in surface water and 3.90 to 85.95 μg/kg in aquatic products. Due to the carcinogenicity of PCP, the human health AWQC for PCP are 0.02 μg/L for consumption of water and organisms and 0.03 μg/L for consumption of organisms only. Deterministic and probabilistic risk analysis indicated that the non-carcinogenic risk of PCP were acceptable in Poyang Lake, while the carcinogenic risk cannot be ignored. The health risks of PCP caused by aquatic products consumption were higher than that by drinking water. The percentages of acceptable risk for the population in Poyang Lake Basin were 99.95% at acceptable level of 10^-4. Based on the sensitivity analysis, the impact of PCP concentrations on health risk values ranged from 53 to 82%. The study provided valuable information for regional water quality criteria development and water quality assessment.

Magnetic silica nanoparticles adorned with a metal-organic framework; a novel nanosorbent for elimination of aqueous Pb ions contaminant

The annual growth of water pollution resulting from the uncontrolled entry of heavy metals, like Pb²⁺ ions, is one of the most critical global concerns due to its direct and indirect effects on human life. The absorption of this component by the body could affect the nervous system via oxidative stress production or disturbing cellular biological mechanism. So, it is important to find an effective method for purifying the existing waters. This study aims to fabricate and compare the effect of two new nano-adsorbents (Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@ZIF-8) on removing Pb²⁺ ions from the aqueous solution. Accordingly, iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized via co-precipitation method at first and then coated with a silica shell through the sol-gel method. Both nanoparticles were coated with a layer of metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, and analyzed with different physicochemical tests. In the following parts, the Pb²⁺ ion removal capability of the nano-adsorbents was evaluated in the presence of different parameters, including nanosorbent concentrations, contact time, pH, and pollutant concentrations. Results confirmed preparation of nanoparticles with a mean size of about 110 ± 10 nm and 80 ± 10 nm for Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@ZIF-8, respectively. Both nanoparticles showed the highest amount of pollutants removal (near 90% for both nanoparticles) at pH = 6 within 15 min of contact in the presence of 100 ppm Pb²⁺ ions. Besides, in the case of real samples, with a concentration of about 150 ppm of Pb²⁺ ions, they showed maximum adsorption of about 93.61% and 99.2% for Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@ZIF-8, respectively. The presence of iron oxide nanoparticles in the structure of this adsorbent makes it easy to separate them in a user-friendly method. A brief comparison between these nanosorbents indicates that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@ZIF-8 nanoparticles have better performance due to their higher porosity and surface area ratio and so it could be used as a cost-effective ideal nanosorbent candidate for easy removal of heavy metals from water.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi, two species of Laccaria, differentially block the migration and accumulation of cadmium and copper in Pinus densiflora

The root tips of host plant species can establish ectomycorrhizae with their fungal partners, thereby altering the responses of the host plants to heavy metal (HM) toxicity. Here, two species of Laccaria, L. bicolor and L. japonica, were investigated in symbiosis with Pinus densiflora to study their potential for promotion of phytoremediation of HM-contaminated soils in pot experiments. The results showed that L. japonica had significantly higher dry biomass than L. bicolor in mycelia grown on modified Melin-Norkrans medium containing elevated levels of cadmium (Cd) or copper (Cu). Meanwhile, the accumulations of Cd or Cu in L. bicolor mycelia were much higher than that in L. japonica at the same level of Cd or Cu. Therefore, L. japonica displayed a stronger tolerance to HM toxicity than L. bicolor in situ. Compared with non-mycorrhizal P. densiflora seedlings, inoculation with two Laccaria species significantly increased the growth of P. densiflora seedlings in absence or presence of HM. The mantle of host roots blocked the uptake and migration of HM, which led to the decrease of Cd and Cu accumulation in the P. densiflora shoots and roots, except for the root Cd accumulation of L. bicolor-mycorrhizal plants when 25 mg kg^-1 Cd exposure. Furthermore, HM distribution in mycelia showed Cd and Cu are mainly retained in the cell walls of mycelia. These results provide strong evidence that the two species of Laccaria in this system may have different strategies to assist host tree against HM toxicity.

Heavy metal(loid)s contaminations in soils of Pakistan: a review for the evaluation of human and ecological risks assessment and spatial distribution

Heavy metal(loid)s (HM) contaminations in the soil poses threats to the human and ecological community due to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and persistent nature in the ecosystem. This review was designed to know about the HM contamination in soils, ecological risk, distribution, and potential health risks. Soil HM concentrations published in the last 30 years were collected from Springer, Science Direct, Willey, Mendeley, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, etc. HM concentrations were used for the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor, as well as integrated indices such as spatial distribution of ecological risk index. Similarly, the Igeo pattern was observed in Sindh > Baluchistan > Punjab > Khyber Pakhtunkhwa > Gilgit-Baltistan > Islamabad. Moreover, the high ecological risk mean values ranged (160 < ERI < 320) due to cadmium (Cd) was exhibited in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces and Islamabad. Non-carcinogenic risk like hazard quotient was found higher for children (1.59) of Punjab due to arsenic (As) ingestion, whereas the lower risk was observed due to Zn (2.5E-08) for adults of Punjab province via inhalation pathway. Similarly, the health index (HI) from exposure to As (1.61) in soil was higher than the rest of the HM. Moreover, cancerous risk was determined and found in the tolerable range (10^-4-10^-6). This study recommended that HM contaminants in the soil need to be monitored on regular basis, especially in Baluchistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Sindh provinces.

Ecotoxicology and geostatistical techniques employed in subtropical reservoirs sediments after decades of copper sulfate application

Spatial distribution linked to geostatistical techniques contributes to sum up information into an easier-to-comprehend knowledge. This study compares copper spatial distribution in surface sediments and subsequent categorization according to its toxicological potential in two reservoirs, Rio Grande (RG) and Itupararanga (ITU) (São Paulo-Brazil), where copper sulfate is applied and not applied, respectively. Sediments from 47 sites in RG and 52 sites in ITU were collected, and then, copper concentrations were interpolated using geostatistical techniques (kriging). The resulting sediment distributions were classified in categories based on sediment quality guides: threshold effect level and probable effect level; regional reference values (RRVs) and enrichment factor (EF). Copper presented a heterogenic distribution and higher concentrations in RG (2283.00 ± 1308.75 mg/kg) especially on the upstream downstream, associated with algicide application as well as the sediment grain size, contrary to ITU (21.81 ± 8.28 mg/kg) where a no-clear pattern of distribution was observed. Sediments in RG are predominantly categorized as "Very Bad", whereas sediments in ITU are mainly categorized as "Good", showing values higher than RRV. The classification is supported by the EF categorization, which in RG is primarily categorized as "Very High" contrasting to ITU classified as "Absent/Very Low". Copper total stock in superficial sediment estimated for RG is 4515.35 Ton of Cu and for ITU is 27.45 Ton of Cu.

Assessment of Edaphic pollution indices and bioaccumulation of trace metals in Solanum lycopersicum, Spinacia oleracea and Triticum aestivum: an associated health risk evaluation

The present study investigates bioaccumulation factor (B_fc), Edaphic pollution indices and associated health risk assessment of trace metals (TMs) i.e., Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and Co in the crops, agricultural soil (AgS), and irrigation water (IgW) collected from various peri-urban area of metropolitan city of India, Lucknow. Though the level of these TMs was within the permissible limits (PL) (FAO/WHO, 2011) in AgS and IgW however it was higher than PL in tomato, spinach and wheat cultivated in the fields. The bioaccumulation factor of Cu, Fe and Mn in edible parts of tomato, spinach and wheat was 8 to 25 times higher through the AgS and 10 to 300 times higher through the IgW in the tomato, spinach and wheat samples. The enrichment factor (E^fc), contamination factor (C^fc), contamination degree (C_dg) and modified contamination degree (mC_dg) values of Co, Cu, Mn, Fe and Zn ranged from low to high levels of contamination, whereas the geo-accumulation index reflected low contamination in agricultural soil. on the other hand, the metal pollution load index (M_pi) was found strongly contaminated in most of the study areas. Due to the consumption of these contaminated vegetables and cereal (VCs) by human consumers, the hazard quotient (HQ), total hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were found to be more than the requisite value of 1, which indicates a far-long health risk in this crowded city and its surrounding regions.

A holistic approach to the eco-geochemical risk assessment of trace elements in the estuarine sediments of the Southeastern Black Sea

The estuarine sediments were sampled seasonally along the southeast coast of the Black Sea, to assess the concentrations, sources, distributions, and possible ecological risks of trace elements (TEs). The mean concentrations of TEs (mg/kg) were ranked as Fe (56,659.83) > Al (39,758.00) > Mn (1168.53) > Zn (155.03) > Cr (120.75) > Pb (93.71) > Cu (82.66) > Ni (44.93) > Co (17.98) > As (13.66) > Cd (0.99) > Hg (0.18), respectively. The stations S4 and S6 showed "very high contamination" for Pb, "significantly enrichment" for Pb and Cd, "high ecological risk" for Cd, and "heavily polluted" for Pb and Cd according to the results of CF, EF, E_rⁱ, I_geo, respectively. The rest of the stations were in the low or moderate contamination through the all seasons as assessed by different eco-geochemical risk assessment indices. The integrated risk evaluation indices indicated no contamination in stations S3 and S5.

Spatial-temporal distributions, probable health risks, and source identification of organic pollutants in surface waters of an extremely hypoxic river basin in Türkiye

This study was carried out to determine the spatiotemporal distributions of organic pollution parameters in the Meriç-Ergene River Basin subjected to intensive agricultural and industrial pressure. A total of 5 basin components, including Anadere (A), Çorlu (Ç), Tunca (T), Meriç (M), and Ergene (E) rivers, and 9 stations (A1, Ç1, T1, M1-M2, and E1-E4) were identified in the watershed, and surface water samples were collected in the dry (end of summer) and wet (end of winter) seasons of 2021-2022. The Water Quality Index (WQI) and Nutrient Pollution Index (NPI) were applied to the data to evaluate the overall water quality characteristics. The Chronic Daily Index (CDI), Hazard Quotient (HQ), and Hazard Index (HI) were applied to the data to reveal the probable noncarcinogenic health risks of organic contaminants. Cluster Analysis (CA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were applied to the data to classify the sampling sites and identify the source apportionment of organic pollution parameters. The recorded spatiotemporal averages of the investigated parameters in the basin are as follows: 6.26 mg/L for DO, 9 for pH, 1626 μS/cm for EC, 985 mg/L for TDS, 1 ‰ for salinity, 6.88 mg/L for nitrate, 0.1 mg/L for nitrite, 1.8 mg/L for phosphate, 81 mg/L for sulfate, and 473 mg/L for chloride. The results indicate that the most contaminated components of the basin are Çorlu Stream and Ergene River, and in addition to their quite high salt and nutrient content, they have extreme hypoxic conditions to the extent that it is impossible for many aquatic organisms to live. The contamination degrees of the investigated basin components were determined using the organic pollution risk assessment indices as follows: Çorlu Stream > Ergene River > Anadere Stream > Tunca River > Meriç River.

Spatio-seasonal patterns of the impact of wastewater treatment plant effluents on antibiotic resistance in river sediments

There is a growing concern about the risk of antibiotic resistance emergence and dissemination in the environment. Here, we evaluated the spatio-seasonal patterns of the impact of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents on antibiotic resistance in river sediments. To this purpose, sediment samples were collected in three river basins affected by WWTP effluents in wet (high-water period) and dry (low-water period) hydrological conditions at three locations: (i) upstream the WWTPs; (ii) WWTP effluent discharge points (effluent outfall); and (iii) downstream the WWTPs (500 m downriver from the effluent outfall). The absolute and relative abundances of 9 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), 3 mobile genetic element (MGE) genes, and 4 metal resistance genes (MRGs) were quantified in sediment samples, as well as a variety of physicochemical parameters, metal contents, and antibiotic concentrations in both sediment and water samples. In sediments, significantly higher relative abundances of most genes were observed in downstream vs. upstream sampling points. Seasonal changes (higher values in low-water vs. high-water period) were observed for both ARG absolute and relative abundances in sediment samples. Chemical data revealed the contribution of effluents from WWTPs as a source of antibiotic and metal contamination in river ecosystems. The observed positive correlations between ARG and MGE genes relative abundances point out to the role of horizontal gene transfer in antibiotic resistance dissemination. Monitoring plans that take into consideration spatio-temporal patterns must be implemented to properly assess the environmental fate of WWTP-related emerging contaminants in river ecosystems.

Blood lead levels in children residing in a 115-year old urban settlement in Harare, Zimbabwe: a cross sectional study

BACKGROUND

Elemental lead (Pb) toxicity in children, irreversibly affects their growth and development. We assessed the prevalence of high blood Pb levels (BLL) in children living in a potentially high risk residential area and also assessed Pb levels in environmental specimens.

METHODS

This cross sectional study measured blood lead levels (BLL) in 86children living in Mbare, a densely populated suburb in Harare, Zimbabwe, characterised by dwellings progressively constructed from 1907 through to the 1940s, before the ban of leaded paint. Study participants of both genders were under 6 years of age. Potential risk factors of Pb poisoning were assessed. Pb levels were also assessed in soil, water and paint chip specimens from the study area.

RESULTS

The mean (standard deviation) BLL was 4.3 ± 0.75 g/dL. Twelve (13.95%) participants had BLL of > 5.0ug/dL. Our results showed no significant association between BLL and household income, participant behaviour/habits/activities, sources of drinking water, and the types of cookware used to prepare meals in their households.

CONCLUSION

Mean BLL observed in the current study were higher compared to those of children of similar age groups in the United States, suggesting that Pb contamination may be more ubiquitous in the Mbare flats area, potentially predisposing these children to impaired development.

Grain size analysis and ecological risk assessment of metals in the sediments of Konsin River and Igboho dam reservoir, Oyo State, Nigeria, under agricultural disturbances

A large amount of agrochemicals and organic manures are applied on agricultural lands which is one of the major pathways of metal contamination in sediments. The present study was an attempt to appraise the grain-size of sediments and metal status of the Konsin River and Igboho dam reservoir sediments using several indexes as contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (DC), geo-accumulation index (I_geo), enrichment factor (EF), potential ecological risk index (PERI), pollution load index (PLI), and statistical analysis. A total of seven sampling sites were chosen based on prevalent anthropogenic features and analyzed for the concentration of metals, viz., Cd, Cr, Pb, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn. The finding from this study showed high presence of very rough grains at the upstream and sand particles at the downstream. The average values of Cd, Cr, Pb, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn range from 0.00 - 2.00, 19.50 - 49.90, 20.80 - 65.30, 593.90 - 2532.90, 22,133.60 - 46,058.60, 19.60 - 66.10, and 81.60 - 191.30 mg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of metals in the sediments followed the increasing order of Cd < Cu < Cr < Pb < Zn < Mn < Fe. The observation from this study showed higher affinity of metals to less particle size. The mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn were above the toxicity reference value. The I_geo and EF indicated that most of the sites were moderately to strongly polluted due to Cd while the calculated PLI showed progressive deterioration of the environment in most sites. The Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that the presence of metals in the sediments were from anthropogenic and unidentified sources. The status of metals in the study area portends a serious ecological threat to the sediment biota and occupants of the agrarian communities that depend on the water and its produce for survival.

Potentially hazardous elements in sediments and Ceratophyllum demersum: an ecotoxicological risk assessment in Miliç Wetland, Samsun, Türkiye

Potentially hazardous elements (PHEs) are non-biodegradable and accumulate in places like water, soil, and plants where they endanger environmental health. There are a considerable number of wetlands having both national and worldwide importance in Türkiye. Regarding PHE accumulation, sediments and Ceratophyllum demersum were examined in the Miliç Wetland (MW), situated in a basin with intense hazelnut and rice farming, which is next to the international highway on the Central Black Sea Coast of Türkiye. The quantification of PHEs in the study subjects was undertaken using a validated inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method, and mean concentrations (mg/kg) of PHEs in the sediments were in the order of Al (13,133) > Fe (10,790) > Mn (205.84) > Cu (17.95) > Cr (16.40) > Zn (15.55) > Ni (11.74) > Pb (9.17) > Co (6.30) > As (2.07) > Cd (0.19). The ecotoxicological risk was assessed using sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and certain geological indices, indicating mostly low ecological risk, low pollution, and no hazardous risk. Based on the modified hazard quotient (mHQ) classification of values, Ni showed low contamination, while Cd, Pb, As, and Cu displayed very low contamination, and Zn presented minor contamination. The findings of total lifetime cancer risk (LCR), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) identified that exposure of adults or children to sediments containing PHEs would not represent a major health risk. As a recommendation, it is necessary to avoid the direct entrance of agricultural pesticides and fertilizers to enhance the sediment quality of the MW. Since the highway was constructed close to MW, this is considered a significant source of human-caused pollution. Consequently, all PHEs analyzed, except for Cd, displayed a bioconcentration factor (BCF) value of more than 1000, indicating that Ceratophyllum demersum is a promising plant for phytoremediation in PHE-polluted ecological systems involving wetlands, and it can efficiently be employed as an indicator species in biological screening investigations.

Trace element speciation in sludge: a preliminary study to assess contamination levels in the sewage network

The spreading of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants and various industries arouses the growing interest due to the contamination by trace elements. Sludges were collected from one sewage treatment plant and two industries in Dhaka City, Bangladesh to assess physicochemical parameters and total and fraction content of trace elements like Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Fe, Mn and Zn in sludges. We evaluated the bioavailability of theses metals by determining their speciation by sequential extraction, each metal being distributed among five fractions: exchangeable fraction, bound to carbonate fraction, Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction, organic matter bound fraction and residual fractions. We found that all the analyzed sludges had satisfactory properties from an agronomic quality point of view. The average concentration (mg/kg) of trace metals in sludge samples were in the following decreasing order Fe (12807) > Cr (200) > Mn (158) > Zn (132) > Cu (68.2) > Ni (42.5) > Pb (36.4) > As (35.1) > Cd (3.7). The results of the sequential extraction showed that Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe and Mn were largely associated with the residual fraction where As, Cd and Pb was dominantly associated with the exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions and Zn showed a considerable proportion in carbonate bound fraction. These results showed that regulations must take into account the bioavailability with regard to the characteristics of the agricultural soils on which sludge will be spread.

Towards an integrated health risk assessment framework of soil heavy metals pollution: Theoretical basis, conceptual model, and perspectives

The health risk of soil heavy metals pollution has been gaining increasing public concern. However, many countries have not set their own health risk assessment (HRA) framework and most of the existing studies directly referred to the USEPA risk assessment model and parameters. For those countries that do not propose an original HRA framework, the experience of developed countries is crucial for advancing their own HRA system. This study systematically reviewed the development of HRA framework in some representative developed countries. The theoretical basis, conceptual model, progress, and challenges of HRA researches concerning soil heavy metals pollution were summarized. By recalling and comparing the health risk-related laws and guidance in the USA, UK, and Japan, results showed that the construction of HRA framework varied between these countries, but HRA has become the main method for deriving their soil environmental criteria. We further summarized the evaluation scales, land use types, exposure pathways, and sensitive receptors of HRA studies, and highlighted the key parameters affecting health risk outputs. There has been a shift toward the incorporation of probabilistic modeling, metals bioavailability, and sources emission characteristics into recent HRA studies. Nonetheless, challenges remained on how to minimize the uncertainty of generating probability distribution and detecting metal bioavailability. To facilitate the development of HRA framework, it was advised that developing countries should strengthen the theoretical researches of health risk and localization researches of exposure factors. Future directions are suggested to tend to: 1) promote sensitive analysis to quantify the impact of distribution assumptions on health risk outputs, 2) derive reasonable risk threshold and consistent evaluation protocol for bioavailability-based health risk assessment method, and 3) strive to explore the combined health effect of exposure to heavy metals in soil through source-media-receptor integrated studies.

Hydrochemical appraisal of surface water from a subtropical urban river in southwestern Bangladesh using indices, GIS, and multivariate statistical analysis

The Gorai River is a significant river  in Bangladesh's southwestern region, where residents make great use of the water despite a lack of adequate and reliable information concerning water quality and pollution levels. Thus, the goal of this research was to examine the spatio-temporal variations in water quality and determine whether it was suitable for drinking, agriculture, industrial, or livestock purposes, as well as the influencing factors and potential sources of water pollution. Surface water samples were collected in wet and dry seasons from ten sampling sites, and twenty water quality parameters were evaluated. The results showed that some studied water quality parameters, e.g., temperature, electrical conductivity, alkalinity, and nitrate, exceeded the maximum allowable limit. Water quality index values exhibited that the water quality of all sampling sites was found to be poor to very poor during the wet season, while only St-4 and St-5 were found to be poor and the rest of the investigated sites were good category during the dry season. Based on sodium adsorption ratio, soluble sodium percentage, residual sodium carbonate, residual sodium bicarbonate, and permeability index values, it was depicted that river water was suitable for irrigation purposes, but when compared to Kelly's ratio (KR) and magnesium hazard ratio values, river water was found to be unfit for irrigation. Moreover, potential salinity (PS) and sodium-to-calcium activity ratio (SCAR) values allow the water as moderately suitable for use in irrigation purposes. Langelier saturation index (LSI) and aggressive index (AI) values revealed that the river water was under saturated to supersaturated and moderate to non-aggressive in nature. However, Ryznar stability index (RSI), Puckorius scaling index (PSI), and Larson-Skold index (LS) values describe whether the water was high or severely corrosive, signifying its inappropriateness for industrial consumption. Principal component analysis (PCA) analysis depicted that the fluctuations in water quality are mostly related to point and non-point contaminations, such as urban and industrial effluent discharged and agricultural runoff of fertilizers. Cluster analysis (CA) revealed relative geographical and seasonal changes in water quality, showing the impact of hydrological changes and contamination.

Potential of granular complexes of lime and montmorillonite for stabilizing soil cadmium and the underlying mechanisms

Cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils were widely remediated by alkaline materials in powder, while the effects of granular materials are still unknown. This study was conducted to prepare granular materials based on hydrated lime and montmorillonite with ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 (LM1, LM2, and LM3); their effects and mechanisms on stabilizing Cd in hydroponic, pot, and field conditions were further explored. The results showed that powdery materials caused intense pH elevations within 30-60 min and dissolved-Cd reductions within 8-100 min. However, granular materials significantly delayed these effects; the highest solution pH and lowest dissolved-Cd occurred after 250 min. The LM1 granules induced a much higher reduction of dissolved-Cd (99.8%) than that in the LM2 (53.6%) and LM3 granules (14.3%) due to the generation of more cadmium carbonate precipitates. Additionally, the soil pH gradually decreased after an intense elevation induced by powdery materials, but the LM1 granules maintained the soil pH at approximately 7.0, resulting in a lower level of CaCl₂-extractable Cd (0.03 mg kg^-1) than the LM1 powder (0.22 mg kg^-1) after 30 d of cultivation. Similar to lime powder, a small spatial variation (Std. of 3.45) of DGT (diffusive gradient in thin films) extractable Cd in soil profile was observed in the LM1 granules, revealing a homogeneous stabilization effect induced by the LM1 granules. Accordingly, the LM1 granules induced a higher reduction in brown rice Cd (50.9%) than that in the LM1 powders (35.1%). Thus, the granular material of hydrated lime and montmorillonite (1:1) h the potential to replace lime powder in the remediation of Cd-contaminated field.

Metal contamination in sediments of dam reservoirs: A multi-facetted generic risk assessment

The quality of bottom sediments is a key factor for many functions of dam reservoirs, which include water supply, flood control and recreation. The aim of the study was to combine different pollution indices in a critical generic risk assessment of metal contamination of bottom sediments. Both geochemical and ecological indices reflected that sediment contamination was dominated by Zn, Pb and Cd. The ecological risk indices suggested a high riks for all three metals, whereas human health risks were high for Pb and Cd. An occasional local contamination of sediments with Cr and Ni was revealed, although at levels not expected to cause concerns about potential ecological or health risk. Sediments from the Rybnik reservoir for Cu only revealed a high potential ecological risk. EF turned to be as being the most useful, whereas TRI (∑TRI) was the most important ecological index. All multi-element indices suggested similar trends, indicating that Zn, Pb and Cd taken altogether had the greatest impact on the level of sediment contamination and posed the greatest potential ecological and health risks to organisms. The use of sequential BCR extraction and ecotoxicity analyses allowed for a multi-facetted generic risk assessment of metals in sediments of dam reservoirs.

Ecological and Health Risk Assessments of Heavy Metals Contained in Sediments of Polish Dam Reservoirs

This study aimed at investigating the distribution of heavy metals (HMs: Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Cu) in the bottom sediments of 28 reservoirs covered area of Poland. The paper evaluates the pollution of sediments with HMs and their potential toxic effects on aquatic organisms and human health on the basis of results provided by the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection in Poland. The average concentrations of HMs in the bottom sediments of the reservoirs were as follows: Cd < Ni < Cr < Cu < Pb < Zn. (0.187, 7.30, 7.74, 10.62, 12.47, and 52.67 mg∙dm−3). The pollution load index values were from 0.05 to 2.45. They indicate contamination of the bottom sediments in seven reservoirs. The contamination-factor values suggest pollution with individual HMs in 19 reservoirs, primarily Cr, Ni, Cu, and Pb. The analysis showed that only two reservoirs had the potential for toxic effects on aquatic organisms due to high concentrations of Cd and Pb. The hazard index values for all the analyzed HMs were less than one. Therefore, there was no non-carcinogenic risk for dredging workers. The reservoirs were divided into two groups in terms of composition and concentration values. Reservoirs with higher concentrations of HMs in bottom sediments are dispersed, suggesting local pollution sources. For the second group of reservoirs, HMs’ concentrations may be determined by regional pollution sources. The analysis showed that Pb, Zn, and Cd concentrations are higher in older reservoirs and those with higher proportions of artificial areas in their catchments. Concentrations of Ni, Cu, and Cr are higher in reservoirs in south Poland and those with higher Schindler’s ratios.

Comparisons of diatoms and fishes as toxic metal bioindicator: a case study of an A-class wetland in northwest Turkey under effect of an intensive paddy cultivation stress

In this research, diatoms as the first step and fishes as the last step of the food chain were compared as toxic metal accumulation bioindicator in an A-class wetland in Turkey. Bioaccumulations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) were determined in liver, gill and muscle tissues of two commercially consumed fish species Carassius gibelio and Cyprinus carpio and in frustules of epiphytic diatom communities living on submerged macrophytes. Samples were collected seasonally from the Gala Lake, which is among the best stopover habitats of birds migrating between Europe and Africa, considering the paddy harvest period that is a major stress factor for the ecosystem. Also, potential human health risks associated with the consumption of fishes and consumption - dermal contact of diatoms were evaluated both for summer - before paddy harvest (BPH) and autumn - after paddy harvest (APH) periods. As a result of this research, the investigated toxic metal concentrations were increased significantly in diatoms in the APH period, while less significant exchanges were recorded in fishes. The bioaccumulations of PTEs were ranked as follows: Zn > Mn > Se > Cu > B > Cr > Ni > As > Pb > Cd for C. gibelio; Zn > Mn > Se > Cu > B > Cr > As > Ni > Pb > Cd for C. carpio; and Mn > Zn > Se > Pb > B > Ni > Cr > Cu > As > Cd for diatom frustules. Although the HI values in diatoms detected in the APH period were statistically significantly higher (about 1000 times; p < 0.05) than detected in the BPH period, they were less than the limit of 1 in both seasons. However, the HI coefficients of fishes were quite higher than the limit (an average of 23.59 for C. gibelio and 19.18 for C. carpio), which means quite high probable non-carcinogenic health risks for humans. Furthermore, the CR coefficients of Cr, Ni and As in muscle tissues of fishes were considerably higher than the limit of 10-4, which reflects a significant carcinogenic health risk for consumers. The data showed that although the fishes at the top of the food chain bioaccumulate the PTEs in their tissues much higher than the diatoms at the bottom of the food chain, the diatoms are much more sensitive to changes in the environmental conditions than the fishes and they are more effective biological tools as toxic metal accumulation bioindicators.

Assessment of benthic macroinvertebrates as potential bioindicators of anthropogenic disturbance in southeast Bangladesh coast

Many human activities can greatly influence and alter the health of aquatic ecosystems. In this regard, the quantitative analysis of macroinvertebrates and their relationships with ecological variables is an effective method in environmental monitoring programs. Here, we used the benthic macroinvertebrate community as bioindicators for assessing anthropogenic impacts on coastal waters in southeast Bangladesh. Sediment samples were collected seasonally from three different sites influenced either by mangrove forests, aquaculture activity or sewage input. The indicator value index (IndVal) analysis revealed 23 species of benthic macroinvertebrates as potential bioindicators namely Enigmonia aenigmatica, Mactra chinensis and Pharella javanica of the class Bivalvia; Tubifex tubifex of the class Clitellata; Lithopoma brevispina, Bullia vittata, Pomacea maculata and Umbonium vestiarium of the class Gastropoda; Gammarus roeselii of the class Malacostraca; and Amphicteis gunneri, Amphitrite ornata, Aricidea simplex, Cirratulus cirratus, Heterospio catalinensis, Hypereteone foliosa, Lopadorrhynchus henseni, Neanthes chingrighattensis, Micronephthys oligobranchia, Nephtys hombergii, Nereis jacksoni, Nereis zonata, Polyodontes maxillosus and Stygocapitella subterranean of the class Polychaeta. Their composition across three sites varied significantly (P < 0.05) due to influence of environmental conditions as inferred from redundancy analysis. Polychaeta, Gastropoda and Malacostraca were susceptible to sewage input, while Bivalvia and Clitellata were susceptible to aquaculture effluent. The results of this baseline study suggest that the identified benthic macroinvertebrate species can potentially be used to monitor anthropogenic disturbances in the marine environment.

Solidification/stabilization of soil heavy metals by alkaline industrial wastes: A critical review

Solidification/stabilization technology is one of the most desirable technologies for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils due to its convenience and effectiveness. The annual production of alkaline industrial wastes in China is in the hundreds of millions of tons. Alkaline industrial wastes have the potential to replace conventional stabilizers because of their cost effectiveness and performance in stabilizing heavy metals in soils. This paper systematically summarizes the use of four alkaline industrial wastes (soda residue, steel slag, carbide slag, and red mud) for the solidification/stabilization of heavy metal contaminated soils and provides a comprehensive analysis of the three mechanisms of action (hydration, precipitation, and adsorption) and factors that influence the process. In addition, the environmental risks associated with the use of alkaline industrial wastes are highlighted. We found that soda residues, steel slag and carbide slag are appropriate for solidification/stabilization of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu, while red mud is a potential passivation agent for the stabilization of As in soils. However, implementation of remediation methods using alkaline industrial wastes has been limited because the long-term effectiveness, synergistic effects, and usage in soils containing multiple heavy metals have not been thoroughly studied. This review provides the latest knowledge on the mechanisms, risks, and challenges of using alkaline industrial wastes for solidification/stabilization of heavy metal contaminated soils.
