Abstract
Background and purpose To evaluate the association between sleep-related factors, including sleep duration, self-reported sleep disturbances, and diagnosed sleep disorders, and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in US participants. Methods The data of this study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2007 and 2014. Sleep factors were assessed using a standardized questionnaire, and overall sleep scores were calculated on a scale of 0 to 3. The participants were classified into three sleep pattern groups: poor sleep pattern (overall sleep score ≤ 1), intermediate sleep pattern (overall sleep score = 2), and healthy sleep pattern (overall sleep score = 3). CVD was defined based on self-reported questionnaire responses. Logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between sleep factors and CVD. Results Among 21,115 participants, 2,245 (10.6%) were diagnosed with CVD. Participants with poor sleep patterns had a significantly higher risk of CVD (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.52-2.16, p < 0.001). Self-reported trouble sleeping (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.32-1.78, p < 0.001), and sleep disorder (OR = 2.09, 95% CI: 1.75-2.50, p < 0.001) were related to an increased risk of CVD. However, no such association was observed for either short (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.95-1.33, p = 0.174) or long sleep durations (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 0.90-1.45, p = 0.266). Our study also suggested an interaction between sleep patterns and age (P for interaction = 0.002). Conclusion This study highlights the significant association between poor sleep patterns and an increased risk of CVD in US participants.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality and psychological stress are interrelated and disproportionately affect adults with multiple cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Maintaining an optimal home environment and engaging in healthy bedtime behaviors are important components of sleep hygiene practices that influence sleep health and mental well-being. However, research is scarce in exploring the associations between sleep hygiene, sleep quality, and psychological stress among adults with multiple CVD risk factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 300 adults diagnosed with hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Individuals were recruited from a large academic health center and were asked to complete an online survey. Sleep hygiene was assessed by nine individual factors focusing on negative household environment (safety, physical comfort, temperature, and light) and poor bedtime behaviors (watching TV, playing video games, using small screens, and eating) and by a composite score. Multiple regression and mediation analysis with bootstrapping were employed to examine the associations. Results Of the sample, 78% reported poor sleep quality and 44% reported high psychological stress. Individual sleep hygiene factors as well as the composite score were significantly associated with poorer sleep quality and higher psychological stress. Sleep quality mediated the association between the composite score and psychological stress (Indirect effect: 0.16; 95% bootstrap confidence interval: 0.04-0.35). Conclusions The study highlights strong links between sleep hygiene, sleep quality, and psychological stress. Although causality cannot be established, current evidence suggests that promoting home environment and bedtime behaviors may alleviate sleep and psychological burdens in adults with multiple CVD risk factors. CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE What Is New?: Adults with hypertension and type 2 diabetes often experience poor sleep quality and elevated psychological stress.Room environment and bedtime behaviors are important components of sleep hygiene practices that strongly associate with sleep quality and mental well-being.Sleep quality may serve as a mediating factor between sleep hygiene and psychological stress.What Are the Clinical Implications?: Enhancing room environment and bedtime behaviors is crucial for adults with multiple cardiovascular disease risk factors.Given the crucial roles of both sleep and psychological stress in cardiovascular health, promoting modifiable sleep hygiene practices may be an effective strategy to mitigate health risks in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep duration is an important factor influencing health outcomes. The association between sleep duration and kidney function remains elusive. This study aimed to explore the association between sleep duration and chronic kidney disease (CKD) amongst Chinese adults. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in the wave of 2009. Participants were divided into three groups: ≤ 6 h/day (short sleepers), 7-8 h/day (regular sleepers) and ≥ 9 h/day (long sleepers) according to self-reported sleep duration. CKD was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. RESULTS A total of 8096 Chinese adults (45.9% men) with a mean age of 50.6 years were included in the study. Compared with regular sleepers, both short and long regular sleepers had a higher prevalence of CKD. A U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and CKD was displayed by restricted cubic spline curve (P-overall < 0.001, P-nonlinear < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression models revealed that both short and long sleep duration were clinically associated with higher odds of CKD, after adjustments for covariates [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.25 and 1.30; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.56 and 1.08-1.54, for short and long sleep duration, respectively]. In subgroup analyses, we found the association was still observed in participants without hypertension or diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION Short or long sleep duration was associated with CKD in the general population.

Abstract
Background Hypertension is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases among the older adult population in China and older adults with hypertension are more susceptible to mental health problems. This study aimed to explore the network structure of depression and anxiety, and their association with life satisfaction (LS) in older adults with hypertension. Methods A total of 4,993 hypertensive individuals aged 60 and above were selected from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS 2017-2018). The design of the CLHLS study was approved by the Campus Institutional Review Board of Duke University (Pro00062871) and the Biomedical Ethics Committee of Peking University (IRB00001052-13,074). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-10 (CESD-10) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) were used to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms. Central and bridge symptoms were identified via "Expected Influence" and "Bridge Expected Influence", respectively. Network stability was assessed using the case-dropping bootstrap technique. Results Network analysis identified CESD3 (Feeling blue/depressed), GAD4 (Trouble relaxing), and GAD2 (Uncontrollable worry) as the most influential central symptoms in the network of depression and anxiety. Concurrently, GAD1 (Nervousness or anxiety), CESD10 (Sleep disturbances), and CESD1 (Feeling bothered) stand as critical bridge symptoms between depression and anxiety disorders. Moreover, CESD7 (Lack of happiness) exhibited the strongest negative correlation with LS in Chinese hypertensive older adults. Conclusion This exploratory study represents the first investigation to examine the mutual relationship between depressive and anxiety symptoms among Chinese hypertensive older adults. Interventions addressing targeting bridge symptoms have the potential to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, improving happiness, hope, and sleep quality in this population may mitigate the adverse effects of depression and anxiety on LS.

Abstract
Objectives Cancer-related insomnia (CRI) takes a toll on many cancer survivors, causing distressing symptoms and deteriorating the quality of life. Acupuncture therapy has been used for CRI already. However, it is still uncertain which acupuncture regime is best for CRI. The primary objective of this review is to conduct a comparative evaluation and ranking of the effectiveness of different acupuncture therapies for CRI. Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that were published up to July 31, 2023, from 8 databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, VIP Database, and China Biology Medicine disc) were integrated in this study. Trials that met the inclusion criteria were evaluated the risk of bias. Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was used to assess the efficacy of different acupuncture therapies as the primary outcome. Then, STATA 15, R, and OpenBUGS were applied to perform the network meta-analysis. PRISMA statements were followed in this network meta-analysis. Results A total of 37 studies were included in this review, involving 16 interventions with 3,246 CRI participants. Auriculotherapy + moxibustion [surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) 98.98%] and auriculotherapy (SUCRA 77.47%) came out top of the ranking, which were more effective than control, medicine, usual care and sham acupuncture. Conclusion Auriculotherapy + moxibustion and auriculotherapy + acupuncture emerged as the top two acupuncture regimes for CRI and future studies should pay more attention to CRI. Abstract
Essential hypertension involves complex cardiovascular regulation. The autonomic nervous system function fluctuates throughout the sleep-wake cycle and changes with advancing age. However, the precise role of the autonomic nervous system in the development of hypertension during aging remains unclear. In this study, we characterized autonomic function during the sleep-wake cycle in different age groups with essential hypertension. This study included 97 men (53 with and 44 without hypertension) aged 30-79 years. They were stratified by age into young (< 40 years), middle-aged (40-59 years), and older (60-79 years) groups. Polysomnography and blood pressure data were recorded for 2 min before and during an hour-long nap. Autonomic function was assessed by measuring heart rate variability and blood pressure variability. Data were analyzed using t tests, correlation analyses, and two-way analysis of variance. During nonrapid eye movement (nREM), a main effect of age was observed on cardiac parasympathetic measures and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), with the highest and lowest levels noted in the younger and older groups, respectively. The coefficients of the correlations between these measures and age were lower in patients with hypertension than in normotensive controls. The BRS of young patients with hypertension was similar to that of their middle-aged and older counterparts. However, cardiac sympathetic activity was significantly higher (p = 0.023) and BRS was significantly lower (p = 0.022) in the hypertension group than in the control group. During wakefulness, the results were similar although some of the above findings were absent. Autonomic imbalance, particularly impaired baroreflex, plays a more significant role in younger patients with hypertension. The nREM stage may be suitable for gaining insights into the relevant mechanisms.

Abstract
Purpose While prior research has highlighted a significant association between sleep characteristics and angina pectoris (AP) incidence, the link between sleep efficiency (SE) and angina remains unexplored. This study seeks to elucidate the relationship between AP and objectively quantified SE. Patients and Methods We examined a cohort of 2990 participants (1320 males and 1670 females; mean age 63.69 ± 13.2 years) from the Sleep Heart Health Study. The main exposure variable was SE, as determined by baseline home polysomnography, while the primary outcome was the first incidence of angina pectoris (AP) during the period between the baseline polysomnography and the end of follow-up. A multivariate Cox regression model was utilized, controlling for factors such as age, gender, BMI, smoking and alcohol consumption habits, diabetes, hypertension, sleep duration, triglycerides, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, apnea-hypopnea index, nocturnal oxygen saturation, to analyze the relationship between SE and AP. Results During an average follow-up of 11 years, 284 patients developed AP. The unadjusted Kaplan-Meier analysis identified the 2nd quartile of SE as having the lowest AP risk. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards model demonstrated a higher risk of AP in quartile 1 (HR, 1.679; 95% CI, 1.109-2.542; P <0.014) and quartile 3 (HR, 1.503; 95% CI, 1.037-2.179; P <0.031), compared to quartile 2 of SE. Upon stratified analysis, this relationship was particularly pronounced in hypertensive individuals. Conclusion Our results highlight the critical role of optimal sleep efficiency in mitigating the risk of angina pectoris, especially among hypertensive individuals.

While their adverse effects on sleep have been separately examined in the laboratory and epidemiological levels, how they impact real-world night-to-night sleep, in isolation or together, remains unclear. This is especially true in occupations wherein the use of alcohol and caffeine is high (e.g., financial services sector). Using a six-week micro-longitudinal study, here we examined the real-world impact of alcohol, caffeine, and their combined consumption in a cohort of financial traders. We demonstrate that alcohol consumption significantly degrades the subjective quality of sleep (p < 0.001). Caffeine consumption led to a different phenotype of sleep impairment, resulting in a detrimental reduction in sleep quantity (p = 0.019), rather than a marked alteration in sleep quality. Contrary to our hypothesis, when consumed in combination, evening alcohol consumption interacted with ongoing caffeine consumption such that alcohol partially mitigated the impairments in sleep quantity associated with caffeine (p = 0.032). This finding suggests the sedating effects of alcohol and the psychoactive stimulant effects of caffeine obscure each other's impact on sleep quantity and sleep quality, respectively-potentially explaining their interdependent use in this cohort (i.e., "self-medication" of evening sedation with alcohol to combat the prior daytime ingestion of caffeine and vice versa). More generally, these results contribute to a unique understanding of the singular and combinatory impacts of two of the most commonly used substances for augmenting human consciousness under free-living, real-world conditions, the performance-impairing (and thus economic-cost) consequences of which may be important to the business sector and the society.

Abstract
Objectives While Bayesian networks (BNs) represents a good approach to discussing factors related to many diseases, little attention has been poured into heart attack combined with hypertension (HAH) using BNs. This study aimed to explore the complex network relationships between HAH and its related factors, and to achieve the Bayesian reasoning for HAH, thereby, offering a scientific reference for the prevention and treatment of HAH. Methods The data was downloaded from the Online Open Database of CHARLS 2018, a population-based longitudinal survey. In this study, we included 16 variables from data on demographic background, health status and functioning, and lifestyle. First, Elastic Net was first used to make a feature selection for highly-related variables for HAH, which were then included into BN model construction. The structural learning of BNs was achieved using Tabu algorithm and the parameter learning was conducted using maximum likelihood estimation. Results Among 19,752 individuals (9,313 men and 10,439 women) aged 64.73 ± 10.32 years, Among 19,752 individuals (9,313 men and 10,439 women), there are 8,370 ones without HAH (42.4%) and 11,382 ones with HAH (57.6%). What's more, after feature selection using Elastic Net, Physical activity, Residence, Internet access, Asset, Marital status, Sleep duration, Social activity, Educational levels, Alcohol consumption, Nap, BADL, IADL, Self report on health, and age were included into BN model establishment. BNs were constructed with 15 nodes and 25 directed edges. The results showed that age, sleep duration, physical activity and self-report on health are directly associated with HAH. Besides, educational levels and IADL could indirectly connect to HAH through physical activity; IADL and BADL could indirectly connect to HAH through Self report on health. Conclusion BNs could graphically reveal the complex network relationship between HAH and its related factors. Besides, BNs allows for risk reasoning for HAH through Bayesian reasoning, which is more consistent with clinical practice and thus holds some application prospects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are frequent in older adults and are associated with chronic diseases. However, the association with multimorbidity patterns is still unknown. Considering the negative impacts that multimorbidity patterns can have on older adults' life, knowledge of this association can help in the screening and early identification of older adults with sleep problems. The objective was to verify the association between sleep problems and multimorbidity patterns in older Brazilian adults. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study conducted with data from 22,728 community-dwelling older adults from the 2019 National Health Survey. The exposure variable was self-reported sleep problems (yes/no). The study outcomes were: multimorbidity patterns, analyzed by self-report of the coexistence of two or more chronic diseases with similar clinical characteristics: (1) cardiopulmonary; (2) vascular-metabolic; (3) musculoskeletal; (4) coexisting patterns. RESULTS Older adults with sleep problems had 1.34 (95%CI: 1.21; 1.48), 1.62 (95%CI: 1.15; 2.28), 1.64 (95%CI: 1.39; 1.93), and 1.88 (95%CI: 1.52; 2.33) greater odds of presenting vascular-metabolic, cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, and coexisting patterns, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that public health programs aimed at preventing sleep problems in older adults are essential to reduce possible adverse health outcomes, including multimorbidity patterns and their negative consequences for older adults' health.

Abstract
Hypertension is a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor and cause of death worldwide. Lotusine, an alkaloid extracted from a plant used in traditional Chinese Medicine, has shown anti-hypertensive effects. However, its therapeutic efficacy requires further investigation. We adopted integrated network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches with the aim of investigating lotusine's antihypertensive effects and mechanisms of action in rat models. After identifying the optimal intravenous dosage, we observed the effects of lotusine administration on two-kidney, one-clip (2K1C) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Based on network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses, we measured renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) to evaluate lotusine's effect. Finally, an abdominal aortic coarctation (AAC) model was established to evaluate lotusine's long-term effects. The network pharmacology analysis identified 21 intersection targets; of these, 17 were also implicated by the neuroactive live receiver interaction. Further integrated analysis showed high lotusine affinity for the cholinergic receptor nicotinic alpha 2 subunit, adrenoceptor beta 2, and adrenoceptor alpha 1B. Blood pressure of the 2K1C rats and SHRs decreased after treatment with 2.0 and 4.0 mg/kg of lotusine (P < 0.001 versus saline control). We also observed RSNA decreases consistent with the network pharmacology and molecular docking analysis results. Results from the AAC rat model indicated that myocardial hypertrophy was decreased with lotusine administration, demonstrated by echocardiography and hematoxylin and eosin and Masson staining. This study provides insights into the antihypertensive effects and underlying mechanisms of lotusine; lotusine may exert long-term protective effects against myocardial hypertrophy caused by elevated blood pressure.

Abstract
This article addresses the issue of patient sleep during hospitalization, which the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine believes merits wider consideration by health authorities than it has received to date. Adequate sleep is fundamental to health and well-being, and insufficiencies in its duration, quality, or timing have adverse effects that are acutely evident. These include cardiovascular dysfunction, impaired ventilatory function, cognitive impairment, increased pain perception, psychomotor disturbance (including increased fall risk), psychological disturbance (including anxiety and depression), metabolic dysfunction (including increased insulin resistance and catabolic propensity), and immune dysfunction and proinflammatory effects (increasing infection risk and pain generation). All these changes negatively impact health status and are counterproductive to recovery from illness and operation. Hospitalization challenges sleep in a variety of ways. These challenges include environmental factors such as noise, bright light, and overnight awakenings for observations, interventions, and transfers; physiological factors such as pain, dyspnea, bowel or urinary dysfunction, or discomfort from therapeutic devices; psychological factors such as stress and anxiety; care-related factors including medications or medication withdrawal; and preexisting sleep disorders that may not be recognized or adequately managed. Many of these challenges appear readily addressable. The key to doing so is to give sleep greater priority, with attention directed at ensuring that patients' sleep needs are recognized and met, both within the hospital and beyond. Requirements include staff education, creation of protocols to enhance the prospect of sleep needs being addressed, and improvement in hospital design to mitigate environmental disturbances. Hospitals and health care providers have a duty to provide, to the greatest extent possible, appropriate preconditions for healing. Accumulating evidence suggests that these preconditions include adequate patient sleep duration and quality. The Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine calls for systematic changes in the approach of hospital leadership and staff to this issue. Measures required include incorporation of optimization of patient sleep into the objectives of perioperative and general patient care guidelines. These steps should be complemented by further research into the impact of hospitalization on sleep, the effects of poor sleep on health outcomes after hospitalization, and assessment of interventions to improve it.

Abstract
Current literature has identified relationships among sleep, nutrition, and diet-related chronic diseases; however, knowledge about how sleep influences diet-related diseases is lacking in dietetics practice. This narrative review briefly explains sleep physiology and outlines the relationships between sleep duration and quality and common nutrition-related diseases, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and cancer. Additionally, the review discusses how sleep influences wound healing and pregnancy outcomes and why hospitalized patients are likely to experience sleep problems. Plausible mechanisms explaining the relationships between sleep and disease are presented. Finally, commonly used sleep assessment tools and interventions are reviewed. Given the importance of sleep to health, dietitians should not only be aware of the role sleep plays in disease development and prevention but also assess sleep when feasible and refer patients and clients who are at high risk for sleep problems to a sleep clinic or community program that can address sleep issues.Teaching points:Sleep duration and quality influence risk and outcomes of common nutrition-related diseases.Sleep health evaluation is a missing piece in dietetic practice.There are easy-to-use, validated tools that dietitians can use to screen for sleep problems in order to refer patients and clients to sleep experts.

Abstract
Sleep is essential to human survival and overall vascular health. Sleep health encompasses the objective and subjective qualities associated with one's daily pattern of sleep and wakefulness and has become a growing clinical and public health concern. Impaired sleep duration and quality can increase stroke risk and mediate the relationship between the physical aspects of an individual's environment and disparities in stroke incidence. Here, we review observational studies evaluating the association between sleep health and cerebrovascular disease. We assess the influence on sleep of the physical environment, including the ambient environment with noise levels and the built environment. We also describe the influences on sleep health and stroke risk of social determinants of health, including the chronic stressor of racial discrimination. Finally, we discuss how changes in historical neighborhood characteristics or societal policies can influence the social factors affecting sleep health and stroke risk among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups or ethnic and racial minorities. Given the regional and racial or ethnic differences in stroke risk across the United States, an understanding of novel vascular risk factors, such as the multifaceted role of sleep health, will be critical to develop effective public policies to improve population health.

Abstract
Background Studies on bidirectional associations between hypertension and insomnia are inconclusive. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to systematically review and summarize the current evidence from epidemiological studies that evaluated this relationship. Materials and Methods PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wan Fang, and VIP databases were searched for studies published up to May 2021. Prospective cohort studies that reported the relationship between hypertension and insomnia in adults were included. Data were extracted or provided by the authors according to the prevalence rate, incidence rate, unadjusted or adjusted odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity was assessed by I2 statistics. ORs were pooled by using random-effects models. Results A total of 23 prospective studies were identified. Twenty cohort studies recorded OR-adjusted value with the outcome for hypertension (OR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.07-1.16; I2 = 83.9%), and three cohort studies reported OR-adjusted value with the outcome for insomnia (OR = 1.20, 95%CI: 1.08-1.32; I2 = 35.1%). Subgroup analysis showed that early morning awakening and composite insomnia were significantly associated with hypertension. Conclusions The result indicates a possible bidirectional association between hypertension and insomnia. Early identification and prevention of insomnia in hypertension patients are needed, and vice versa.

Abstract
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a hallmark symptom in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It is commonly eliminated by obstructive sleep apnea therapy and constitutes a major treatment indication. This study aimed to identify determinants of excessive daytime sleepiness by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) scores in the large, representative national obstructive sleep apnea patient cohort of the Swedish Sleep Apnea Registry (SESAR, www.sesar.se). Data from 34,684 patients with obstructive sleep apnea recruited at 23 sites (33% females, mean age 55.7 ± 13.7 years, BMI 30.2 ± 6.3 kg/m2 , AHI 29.1 ± 22.3, and ODI 24.9 ± 21.4 events/h) had a mean ESS score in the mild to moderate excessive daytime sleepiness range (9.7 ± 4.9). The proportion of patients with excessive daytime sleepiness was 41.4% in men and 44.6% in women. Independent predictors of excessive daytime sleepiness included gender, age, and hypoxic markers (high ODI and low mean saturation). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify significant predictors for the ESS score and for excessive daytime sleepiness (ESS ≥10) amongst anthropometric factors, sleep apnea frequency (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)), markers of intermittent hypoxia (oxygen desaturation index (ODI), mean saturation (mSaO2 )), as well as prevalent comorbidities. Depression was associated with higher ESS scores and hypertension/atrial fibrillation with lower scores. The oxygen desaturation index provided a stronger predictor of excessive daytime sleepiness than the apnea-hypopnea index. The severity of obstructive sleep apnea, captured as the apnea-hypopnea index, was only weakly associated with daytime sleepiness in this representative obstructive sleep apnea patient cohort. Age had different effects in men and women.The impact of obstructive sleep apnea in a wider patient related perspective needs to be determined after the inclusion of factors other than the apnea-hypopnea index.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Altered sleep parameters, such as duration and quality, play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases, as well as in all-cause morbidity and mortality. It has been suggested that the specific mechanisms underlying this association could be through the influence of sleep parameters on vascular markers, such as arterial stiffness (AS), although this remains unclear. Thus, in this meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the association between sleep duration and sleep quality with AS in adults. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to July 30, 2021. The DerSimonian and Laird method was used to compute pooled effect size estimates and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of the association of sleep duration and sleep quality with AS. The Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies from the United States National Institute of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS Finally, 14 studies (8 cross-sectional studies and baseline data from 6 prospective longitudinal studies) involving 97,837 individuals between 18 and 92 years of age were included. Our results showed that increased sleep duration, as continuous values, does not influence AS (effect size [ES]: 0.00; 95% CIs: -0.15, 0.15) in the general population. However, when sleep duration was longer than 8 hours (ES: 0.21; 95% CIs: 0.06, 0.36), according to sleep categories, a significant increase in pulse wave velocity was shown. Poor sleep quality was associated with increased AS (ES: 0.13; 95% CIs: 0.04, 0.21) in the general population. The overall risk of bias for studies examining sleep duration was fair in 77.8% of the included studies and the overall risk of bias for studies examining sleep quality was fair in 55.6%. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that both long sleep duration and poor sleep quality were associated with AS in adults. These findings underscore the influence of sleep on vascular health markers, specifically AS, as a possible pathway to explain the increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with sleep disorders.

Abstract
Sleep disorders have been shown to increase the risk of hypertension, while the relationship between night sleep latency and hypertension is less well-known. We aimed to investigate the association between night sleep latency and hypertension, as well as related sleep factors by gender in the Chinese population. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the relationship between night sleep latency and hypertension. The sample size included 619 consecutive hospitalized patients (M/F: 302/317, 64.01 ± 12.27 years). T test, Chi-square test, and ANOVA were performed to analyze baseline data and intergroup comparisons. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to find the interrelationships. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to adjust for covariables. The findings showed hypertension patients had longer night sleep latency (P < .001). After adjusting for confounding factors, night sleep latency was positively correlated with hypertension in both men and women (odds ratio: 1.065, 95% confidence interval: 1.044-1.087). Spearman correlation analysis suggested that night sleep latency was positively correlated with systolic blood pressure (r = 0.186, P < .001), diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.136, P < .001), sleep initiation time (r = 0.091, P = .023), and global Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index score (r = 0.371, P < .001), was negatively correlated with sleep duration (r = -0.186, P < .001), sleep time on weekdays (r = -0.183, P < .001), and sleep time on weekends (r = -0.179, P < .001). Longer night sleep latency was associated with an increased risk of hypertension in men and women, which might involve the pathological progression of hypertension along with other sleep factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the occupational factors associated with poor sleep quality in correctional officers (COs). METHOD This is a cross-sectional study involving COs who work at four prison facilities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Logistic and linear regression models were used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and beta coefficient (β) of poor sleep quality and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI), respectively. The analyses were adjusted for the main confounders. RESULTS Considering the 256 male COs who participated in the study, 148 (57.8%) had poor sleep quality. In the adjusted analyses, poor sleep quality was associated with higher mental demands (OR = 3.10; 95% CI: 1.40-6.85), having suffered psychological violence at work (OR = 2.13; 95% CI: 1.04-4.35), agreeing with the following statement: "I think about work-related issues in my free time" (OR = 5.13; 95% CI: 1.26-20.78), feeling partially dissatisfied (OR = 2.26; 95% CI: 1.09-4.68) or dissatisfied with work (OR = 4.52; CI: 1.32-15.46) and willingness to find another job (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.53-6.71). The occupational factors dissatisfaction with work (β = 1.02; 95% CI: 0.05-1.98) and having health problems related to the work environment (β = 0.32; 95% CI: 0.24-2.41) were also associated with higher scores on the PSQI. CONCLUSION Poor quality of sleep is a highly frequent health problem among correctional officers, and this condition is associated with the perception of poor working conditions, professional dissatisfaction and the fact that such professionals think about work during their free time.

Abstract
CONTEXT It is well known that Graves disease (GD) causes sleep disorders (SDs). However, the characteristics and associated factors of SD and its clinical course post hyperthyroidism normalization remain unclear. OBJECTIVE To clarify the characteristics and associated factors of subjective SD and its clinical course after GD treatment. METHODS From November 2017 to October 2020, we enrolled 72 participants (22 newly diagnosed with GD with untreated hyperthyroidism, 20 previously diagnosed with GD with normal thyroid function, and 30 normal controls) with no other underlying SD-related diseases. We compared the groups at enrollment and conducted prospective observations after 12 months of treatment on participants with newly diagnosed GD. Main outcome measures were differences and changes in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global and component sleep quality scores. RESULTS PSQI global sleep quality scores (P = .036) and sleep disturbance scores (P = .011) were significantly different among the 3 groups, and were highest in the untreated hyperthyroidism group. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that free thyroxine level, which was positively correlated with sympathetic tone (ST) as evaluated by pulse rate, and urinary total metanephrines was associated with poorer PSQI global sleep quality scores independently of other factors (P = .006). Prospective observation showed that PSQI global sleep quality scores (P = .018) and sleep disturbance scores (P = .011) significantly improved with thyroid function normalization and ST attenuation. CONCLUSION Hyperthyroidism caused by GD augmented ST and exacerbated subjective SD. Normalization of hyperthyroidism caused by GD improved subjective SD.

Abstract
Introduction: High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) is deemed effective for cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system (ANS) health-related benefits, while ANS disturbance increases the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Postprandial lipemia and acute-partial sleep deprivation (APSD) are considered as CVD risk factors due to their respective changes in ANS. Exercising in the morning hours after APSD and have a high-fat breakfast afterwards may alter the interactions of the cardiovascular, autonomic regulation, and postprandial lipemic systems threatening individuals' health. This study examined postprandial network interactions between autonomic regulation through heart rate variability (HRV) and lipemia via low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in response to APSD and HIIE. Methods: Fifteen apparently healthy and habitually good sleepers (age 31 ± 5.2 SD yrs) completed an acute bout of an isocaloric HIIE (in form of 3:2 work-to-rest ratio at 90 and 40% of VO2 reserve) after both a reference sleep (RSX) and 3-3.5 h of acute-partial sleep deprivation (SSX) conditions. HRV time and frequency domains and LDL were evaluated in six and seven time points surrounding sleep and exercise, respectively. To identify postprandial network interactions, we constructed one correlation analysis and one physiological network for each experimental condition. To quantify the interactions within the physiological networks, we also computed the number of links (i.e., number of significant correlations). Results: We observed an irruption of negative links (i.e., negative correlations) between HRV and LDL in the SSX physiological network compared to RSX. Discussion: We recognize that a correlation analysis does not constitute a true network analysis due to the absence of analysis of a time series of the original examined physiological variables. Nonetheless, the presence of negative links in SSX reflected the impact of sleep deprivation on the autonomic regulation and lipemia and, thus, revealed the inability of HIIE to remain cardioprotective under APSD. These findings underlie the need to further investigate the effects of APSD and HIIE on the interactions among physiological systems.

Abstract
Sleep is vital to life, even when women enter into pregnancy state. Good sleep is important for a healthy pregnancy. Sleep disturbances are common during pregnancy and can be due to the change of pregnancy itself or the results of sleep disorders. There is growing evidence linking sleep disturbances with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Differentiation of sleep disorders in order to provide appropriate treatment as well as promoting good sleep for pregnant women is important. A multidisciplinary team to provide sleep care during antenatal period may be needed.

Abstract
Tight connections between the brain and heart have attracted a considerable amount of attention. This review focuses on the anatomical (extrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system and intrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system) and functional (neuroendocrine-heart axis and neuroimmune-heart axis) connections between the brain and heart, the linkage between central nervous system diseases and cardiovascular diseases, the harm of sympathetic hyperactivity to the heart, and current neuromodulation therapies. Depression is a comorbidity of cardiovascular diseases, and the two are causally related. This review summarizes the mechanisms and treatment of depression and cardiovascular diseases, providing theoretical evidence for basic research and clinical studies to improve treatment options.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances are common in patients with stroke, and sleep quality has a critical role in the onset and outcome of stroke. Poor sleep exacerbates neurological injury, impedes nerve regeneration, and elicits serious complications. Thus, exploring a therapy suitable for patients with stroke and sleep disturbances is imperative. As a multi-targeted nonpharmacological intervention, remote ischemic conditioning can reduce the ischemic size of the brain, improve the functional outcome of stroke, and increase sleep duration. Preclinical/clinical evidence showed that this method can inhibit the inflammatory response, mediate the signal transductions of adenosine, activate the efferents of the vagal nerve, and reset the circadian clocks, all of which are involved in sleep regulation. In particular, cytokines tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and adenosine are sleep factors, and electrical vagal nerve stimulation can improve insomnia. On the basis of the common mechanisms of remote ischemic conditioning and sleep regulation, a causal relationship was proposed between remote ischemic conditioning and post-stroke sleep quality.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was aimed to determine the magnitude and predictors of self-reported short/long sleep duration (SDUR) reclassifications using objective measurements. METHODS Adult participants from the ELSA-Brasil study performed self-reported SDUR, 7-day wrist actigraphy, and a portable sleep study. We explored two strategies of defining self-reported SDUR reclassification: (1) short and long SDUR defined by <6 and ≥8h, respectively; (2) reclassification using a large spectrum of SDUR categories (<5, 5-6, 7-8, 8-9, and >9 h). RESULTS Data from 2036 participants were used in the final analysis (43% males; age: 49±8 years). Self-reported SDUR were poorly correlated (r=0.263) and presented a low agreement with actigraphy-based total sleep time. 58% of participants who self-reported short SDUR were reclassified into the reference (6-7.99 h) or long SDUR groups using actigraphy data. 88% of participants that self-reported long SDUR were reclassified into the reference and short SDUR. The variables independently associated with higher likelihood of self-reported short SDUR reclassification included insomnia (3.5-fold), female (2.5-fold), higher sleep efficiency (1.35-fold), lowest O2 saturation (1.07-fold), higher wake after sleep onset (1.08-fold), and the higher number of awakening (1.05-fold). The presence of hypertension was associated with a 3.4-fold higher chance of self-reported long SDUR reclassification. Analysis of five self-reported SDUR categories revealed that the more extreme is the SDUR, the greater the self-reported SDUR reclassification. CONCLUSION In adults, we observed a significant rate of short/long SDUR reclassifications when comparing self-reported with objective data. These results underscore the need to reappraise subjective data use for future investigations addressing SDUR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health emergency resulting in widespread death and substantial disruption to daily life. Previous research has shown that novel disease outbreaks are associated with high stress levels and sleep impairments that lead to neuropsychiatric consequences. Therefore, it is vital to study both stress and protective factors such as coping and resilience that may hinder or help sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, as gender disparities exist in sleep quality, it is important to understand the relationship between pandemic-related stress, coping strategies, resilience, and sleep in bothgenders during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Our study examined how gender, stress, coping, and resilience were associated with sleep cross-sectionally during the COVID-19 pandemic in a representative sample of US adults (N = 393). RESULTS Consistent with many recent studies, we found that worsened sleep quality in women compared to men persisted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interestingly, pandemic-related stress was not significantly associated with sleep quality, but pandemicrelated coping was associated with sleep independent of robust controls and trait resilience. CONCLUSIONS Greater primary control engagement coping was associated with better sleep quality, while involuntary engagement coping was associated with poor sleep quality. Future research should extend the findings with actigraphy and explore ways to enhance beneficial coping and sleep health during pandemics.

Abstract
Background Regarding insufficient data about interaction of job in association of sleep quality with metabolic syndrome (MS), this study has been designed to evaluate this association in workers and employees. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 448 municipal staff (employee group: N = 295; worker group: N = 153) referring for periodic examinations. The relationship between sleep quality and MS and their relevant components was investigated in both groups. Results In the worker group, poor sleep quality was independently associated with the risk of MS by 3.04 times (P < 0.01). Among the components of metabolic syndrome, hypertriglyceridemia was associated with a greater number of sleep disorder components. There was no association between metabolic syndrome and sleep quality in the employee group. Conclusion Poor sleep quality exerts different effects on metabolic complications in employees and workers.

Abstract
Background The global spread of COVID-19 has brought immense psychological distress and sleep problems to those affected. This study examined the mediating role of rumination in the direct association between COVID-19 stressors and poor sleep quality and the moderating roles of emotion regulation strategies. Method A cross-sectional online survey study was conducted in China during the early outbreak of the pandemic. A total of 1106 Chinese college students (Mage = 19.58, SD = 1.61) completed measures of COVID-19 stressors, rumination, emotion regulation strategies (i.e., cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression), and poor sleep quality. Results COVID-19 stressors were positively associated with poor sleep quality (β = .431, p < .001), and rumination partially mediated this association. The mediation effect accounted for 70.93% of the total effect of COVID-19 stressors on poor sleep quality. Moreover, cognitive reappraisal moderated the relation between COVID-19 stressors and rumination, and expressive suppression moderated the association between rumination and poor sleep quality. Conclusion Rumination could be a mechanism by which COVID-19 stressors are linked with poor sleep quality. Cognitive reappraisal might provide desired benefits to improving sleep quality while expressive suppression may do the opposite. Implications for future steps and health interventions are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) seems to positively modulate the autonomic nervous system in different clinical conditions and healthy subjects; however, its effects on hypertensive (HTN) patients are not completely known. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a tDCS or SHAM session (20 min) on blood pressure (BP) and autonomic variables of HTN patients.Materials and Methods: Subjects (n = 13) were randomly submitted to SHAM and tDCS sessions (1 week of washout). Hemodynamic and autonomic variables were measured at baseline, during, and immediately after tDCS or SHAM stimulation (Finometer®, Beatscope). Ambulatory BP measurement (ABPM) was evaluated after the experimental period.Results: Hemodynamic variables were not changed by tDCS, except for the fall in peripheral vascular resistance (Δ = -1696.51 ± 204.65 dyn.s/cm5). After the tDCS, sympathetic modulation was decreased (-61.47%), and vagal modulation was increased (+38.09%). Such acute autonomic changes may have evoked positive results observed in 24 hs-systolic blood pressure (Δ = -8.4 ± 6.2; P = .0022) and 24hs-diastolic blood pressure (Δ = -5.4 ± 4.2; P = .0010) in tDCS subjects compared with that in SHAM.Conclusion: These findings suggest that the tDCS could promote positive acute adjustments on cardiac autonomic control and reduced values on 24-hs BP of HTN patients. More than a proof-of-concept, these results may point out to the future, where brain stimulation (tDCS) can be used to HTN syndromes, such as refractory HTN.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and venous thromboembolism. Elevated soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) levels are also associated with increased risk of above diseases. But whether sP-selectin levels in OSA patients are higher than their counterparts remain unclear, since previous studies yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, a meta-analysis is warranted. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched for eligible studies. Studies were included if they reported sP-selectin levels of both OSA patients and non-OSA controls. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to determine the effect sizes. RESULTS Nine eligible studies were finally evaluated. When all the studies were pooled, sP-selectin levels in OSA patients were significantly higher than that in controls (SMD = 0.54, 95% CI 0.29-0.78, I2 = 66%, p < 0.0001). In the subgroup analysis based on BMI matched groups, sP-selectin levels were significantly higher in OSA patients than that in controls (SMD = 0.52, 95% CI 0.27-0.76, I2 = 23%, p < 0.0001). In the subgroup analysis stratified by blood source, either serum sP-selectin levels or plasma sP-selectin levels in OSA patients were higher than that in controls. Moderate-to-severe OSA patients had significant higher sP-selectin levels (SMD = 0.80, 95% CI 0.45-1.15, I2 = 67%, p < 0.00001), while mild OSA patients showed no significant difference with controls. CONCLUSION The pooled results reveal that OSA patients have higher sP-selectin levels than non-OSA controls. This conclusion remains unaltered in all subgroups other than the subgroup of mild OSA patients. Additional studies are warranted to better identify the role of sP-selectin as a potential biomarker in OSA patients.

Abstract
Subclinical abnormalities in cardiac and vascular structure reflect the adverse effects triggered by a variety of risk factors on the cardiovascular (CV) system thereby representing an intermediate step in the cardiovascular continuum; such alterations are recognized as reliable markers of increased cardiovascular risk in different clinical settings including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The mechanisms underlying subclinical organ damage (OD) in the OSA setting are multifactorial. Hypoxemia and hypercapnia, induced by repeated collapses of upper airways, have been suggested to trigger a cascade of events such as activation of the sympathetic tone, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system leading to endothelial dysfunction, vasoconstriction, myocardial and vascular remodeling, and hypertension. Furthermore, coexisting non-haemodynamic alterations such as increased oxidative stress, release of inflammatory substances, enhanced lipolysis and insulin resistance have been reported to play a role in the pathogenesis of both cardiac and extra-cardiac OD. In this article we reviewed available evidence on the association between OSA and subclinical cardiac (i.e., left and right ventricular hypertrophy, left atrial dilatation) and extra-cardiac organ damage (i.e., carotid atherosclerosis, arterial stiffness, microvascular retinal changes, and microalbuminuria). This association is apparently stronger for cardiac and carotid subclinical damage than for other markers (i.e., arterial stiffness and retinal changes) and mostly evident in the setting of severe OSA.

Abstract
Background Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) results in sympathetic overdrive. Increased nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV) is a surrogate marker of autonomic disturbance. The aim was to study the association of the apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI), nocturnal hypoxaemia, and sleep fragmentation with nocturnal HRV to address the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying autonomic disturbance in OSA. Methods Participants of the Sleep Hearth Health Study with available data on nocturnal HRV and an AHI ≥10/h have been included in this cross-sectional analysis. The main outcome of interest was the association of sleep fragmentation, nocturnal hypoxaemia, and the AHI with nocturnal HRV. Multivariate regression modelling with the mean of the standard deviations of normal-sinus-to-normal-sinus-interbeat intervals in all 5-minute segments (SDNNIDX) and with low to high frequency power-ratio (LF/HF) as dependent variables controlling for prespecified confounders (age, sex, cups of coffee, beta blocker, nocturnal heart rate) was used to assess the contribution of the arousal index, total sleep time with an oxygen saturation <90% (TST90) and the AHI not due to arousals to HRV. The significance level was set at P<0.01. Results In 258 patients with OSA (mean ± SD age 62±10 years, BMI 29±4 kg/m2, median (IQR) AHI 18.6/h (14.0-25.6), the arousal index (coef =0.42, P=0.002) was independently positively associated with SDNNIDX also after having controlled for potential confounders, whereas the AHI (coef =0.22, P=0.030) and TST90 (coef =0.36, P=0.054) were not. The arousal index-but not TST and AHI-was also independently associated with LF/HF. Conclusions In OSA, pronounced sleep fragmentation is associated with higher nocturnal HRV and a sympatho-vagal imbalance with sympathetic dominance. OSA severity and nocturnal hypoxaemia did not independently predict nocturnal HRV.

Abstract
Introduction In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), endothelial dysfunction and stiffness of systemic arteries may contribute to increased cardiovascular risk. Pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) is frequent in COPD. The association between PVD and systemic vascular dysfunction has not been thoroughly evaluated in COPD. Methods A total of 108 subjects were allocated into four groups (non-smoking controls, smoking controls, COPD without PVD and COPD with PVD). In systemic arteries, endothelial dysfunction was assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and arterial stiffness by pulse wave analysis (PWA) and pulse wave velocity (PWV). PVD was defined by a mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) ≥25 mmHg at right heart catheterization or by a tricuspid regurgitation velocity >2.8 m/s at doppler echocardiography. Biomarkers of inflammation and endothelial damage were assessed in peripheral blood. Results FMD was lower in COPD patients, with or without PVD, compared to non-smoking controls; and in patients with COPD and PVD compared to smoking controls. PWV was higher in COPD with PVD patients compared to both non-smoking and smoking controls in a model adjusted by age and the Framingham score; PWV was also higher in patients with COPD and PVD compared to COPD without PVD patients in the non-adjusted analysis. FMD and PWV correlated significantly with forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and systolic PAP. FMD and PWV were correlated in all subjects. Discussion We conclude that endothelial dysfunction of systemic arteries is common in COPD, irrespective if they have PVD or not. COPD patients with PVD show increased stiffness and greater impairment of endothelial function in systemic arteries. These findings suggest the association of vascular impairment in both pulmonary and systemic territories in a subset of COPD patients.

Abstract
Cardiac death is the second most prevalent cause in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Paediatric patients with PWS often present cardiac autonomic dysfunction during wakefulness, obesity and sleep-disordered breathing. However, the extent of cardiac autonomic modulation during sleep in PWS has not been documented. The objective of this study was to assess alterations in cardiac autonomic modulation of paediatric patients with PWS during different sleep stages. Thirty-nine participants in three groups: 14 PWS, 13 sex and age-matched lean controls (LG) and 12 obese-matched controls (OB). All participants underwent overnight polysomnography, including continuous electrocardiogram recordings. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analysed during representative periods of each sleep stage through time and frequency domains calculated across 5-min periods. Between-within ANOVAs were employed (p < .05). The results show that total HRV was lower in PWS than OB and LG during slow-wave sleep (SWS) (standard deviation of all NN intervals [SDNN] ms, p = .006). Parasympathetic modulation assessed by time-domain analysis was lower during SWS in PWS compared to both OB and LG (square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent NN intervals [RMSSD] ms, p = .004; SDSD, standard deviation of differences between adjacent NN intervals [SDSD] ms, p = .02; number of adjacent NN intervals differing by >50 ms [NN50] ms, p = .03; proportion of adjacent NN intervals differing by >50 ms [pNN50] ms, p = .01). Sympathovagal balance assessed by frequency-domain analysis was lower during both N2 and SWS than during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage, but not different among groups. In conclusion, this group of paediatric patients with PWS had impaired cardiac autonomic balance due to reduced parasympathetic modulation during SWS. This result could imply an underlying increased cardiovascular risk in PWS even during early age and independent of obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Psoriasis (PS) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease. PS may lead to significant effects on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and other outcomes. In the present study, an investigation into sleep quality (SQ), and its possible relations with factors which may affect SQ were aimed. METHODS A total of 74 subjects from both sexes were enrolled in this study, between January and July 2017. Patients were evaluated with their demographics, body mass index (BMI), Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Psoriasis Quality of Life Index (PQLI), Self Perception Scale (SPS). Additionally, accompanying chronic diseases, disease duration and severity of pruritus were recorded. Obtained PSQI values were compared with the mentioned parameters concerning the significance of their relations with it. SPSS version 24, 2016 was used to analyse the data, and significance was evaluated with p-values of <0.05, 0.01, and 0.001, and rho (r) values of <0.2, =0.2-0.4, =0.4-0.6, =0.6-0.8 and >0.8. RESULTS Thirty-seven female and 37 male were studied. The mean age of total of the study population was 47.21±13.91. Mean BMI and mean duration were 30.09± 4.68 kg/m2, and 10.58±9.1 months. Mean values of PASI, PSQI, SPS, and PQLI of the study group were 19.79±16.99, 9.14±5.09, 142.12±23.83, and 21.94±16.31, respectively. Approximately thirty-one percent of them had at least one chronic disease. Alcohol and smoking rates were 17.56%, 50%. PASI was positive/strongly correlated with PQLI and negative/weakly correlated with SPS. No correlation was detected between PSQI values and age, gender, BMI, and SPS values. PSQI was moderately correlated with PQLI, diabetes mellitus (DM), and pruritus severity, whereas it was weak correlated with PASI, hypertension (HT), thyroid diseases and disease duration. PASI and DM showed a predictive effect on SQ. CONCLUSION SQ is affected by certain factors, such as QoL, disease severity, disease duration, pruritus severity, accompanying disorders, such as HT, DM and thyroid diseases, in which disease severity and DM have predictive effects on SQ in PS patients. Controls of disease activation and prevention of progression in DM may provide to keep SQ in PS.

Abstract
This study investigated the associations of baseline sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, longest wake episode, number of awakenings, sleep efficiency and sleep duration with incident hypertension during a 7-year follow-up (n = 161, 68% men) and the joint effect of insufficient sleep and obesity on incident hypertension. Sleep parameters were derived from 15-day actigraphy data. Relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were estimated using a robust Poisson regression model. Each 10-min increase in sleep onset latency was associated with an 89% higher risk of hypertension (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.12-3.20). Each 10-min increase in longest wake episode was associated with a 23% higher risk of hypertension (95% CI = 1.01-1.50) and each 10% decrease in sleep efficiency was associated with a 50% higher risk of hypertension (95% CI = 1.02-2.22). These associations were independent of demographic and lifestyle characteristics, depressive symptoms, shift work, sleep duration and body mass index. Having <6 hr of sleep and a body mass index ≥30 kg/m2 increased the risk of hypertension (relative risk = 2.81; 95% CI = 1.26-6.25) compared with having ≥6 hr of sleep and a body mass index <30 after controlling for confounders. Relative excess risk due to interaction was 3.49 (95% CI = -1.69-8.68) and ratio of relative risk was 3.21 (95% CI = 0.72-14.26). These results suggest that poor sleep quality is a risk factor for hypertension. Longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to examine the joint effect of insufficient sleep and obesity on development of hypertension.

Abstract
Aims: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with heart failure (HF). Sleep fragmentation (SF), one of the main hallmarks of OSA, induces systemic inflammation, oxidative stress and sympathetic activation, hence potentially participating in OSA-induced cardiovascular consequences. However, whether SF per se is deleterious to heart function is unknown. The aim of this study was to non-invasively evaluate the effect of SF mimicking OSA on heart function in healthy mice and in mice with HF. Methods and Results: Forty C57BL/6J male mice were randomized into 4 groups: control sleep (C), sleep fragmentation (SF), isoproterenol-induced heart failure (HF), and mice subjected to both SF+HF. Echocardiography was performed at baseline and after 30 days to evaluate left ventricular end-diastolic (LVEDD) and end-systolic (LVESD) diameters, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and fraction shortening (FS). The effects of SF and HF on these parameters were assessed by two-way ANOVA. Mice with isoproterenol-induced HF had significant increases in LVEDD and LVESD, as well as a decreases in LVEF and FS (p = 0.013, p = 0.006, p = 0.027, and p = 0.047, respectively). However, no significant effects emerged with SF (p = 0.480, p = 0.542, p = 0.188, and p = 0.289, respectively). Conclusion: Chronic SF mimicking OSA did not induce echocardiographic changes in cardiac structure and function in both healthy and HF mice. Thus, the deleterious cardiac consequences of OSA are likely induced by other perturbations associated with this prevalent condition, or result from interactions with underlying comorbidities in OSA patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The goal of the present review is to describe the current findings on the association of sleep with resistant hypertension (hypertension that remains uncontrolled despite the use of three or more antihypertensive medications from different classes, including a diuretic). RECENT FINDINGS Sleep disturbances, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), are highly prevalent among adults who have resistant hypertension. Randomized controlled trials indicate that treating OSA has modest effects on blood pressure lowering among those with the highest initial blood pressure. There is a paucity of research on the association of habitual sleep and other sleep disturbances with resistant hypertension. Of note, the most recent observational studies describing the association of OSA with resistant hypertension are comprised primarily of non-white race/ethnic groups who are far more likely to have resistant hypertension. OSA is associated with resistant hypertension, but there is limited data on associations between sleep characteristics and resistant hypertension. Future studies should investigate whether treating OSA can reduce disparities in resistant hypertension and whether other aspects of sleep also contribute to resistant hypertension.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to determine, in the Wistar male rats, the role of the stress system in the control of cerebral hemodynamics induced by emotional stress (air jet). Blood flow rates in the internal carotid arteries have been obtained using chronically implanted Doppler probes. In this investigation, air-jet stress provokes a rapid and substantial elevation of blood pressure combined with hyperemia and vasodilation. Spectral analysis reveals an increase in the variability of carotid blood flow and carotid vascular conductance during stress compared to the baseline state. The coherence between the two carotid blood flow, which provides a linear correlation index in the frequency domain, was calculated before (ordinary coherence) and after mathematical elimination of the influence of blood pressure (partial coherence). The main advantages of the technique are as follows:• It allows the measurement of cerebral blood flow while comparing them with the physiological parameters of the animal such as blood pressure.• Air-jet stress is a psychological rather than physical stress that generates hyperemia in a non-pharmacological way (no side effects) without injuring the animal or damaging the experimental installation during the recording sessions.• A simple method for tracing a kinetic path before and at the moment of stress initiation.• The presence of a catheter facilitates the administration of drug substances if required.• Laboratory-developed software, based on the Lab VIEW 5.1, allows real-time monitoring of blood pressure and carotid flow rates signals using fast Fourier transform.
