Abstract
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a nonspecific biomarker for systemic inflammatory response and is linked to the prognosis of breast cancer (BC); however, few studies have investigated the correlation between CRP and the effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment for BC. We recruited 177 patients with BC who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy in our clinical trial. the median CRP level (0.24 mg/L), patients were categorized into high and low groups. We examined the relationship between CRP levels and various clinicopathological factors, including pathological complete response (pCR), using the chi-square test or Fisher exact test. Furthermore, we evaluated the predictive capacity of CRP for different molecular subtypes by constructing receiver operating characteristic curves. To identify the independent variables associated with pCR, we conducted logistic regression multivariate analysis. No association was found between C-reactive levels at baseline and pCR rates. CRP level was significantly associated with higher body mass index, and the high CRP group had more overweight patients (47.06% vs. 16.30%, P < .001). In hormone receptor-positive patients, the high CRP group demonstrated a significantly higher pCR rate (OR = 4.115, 95% CI: 1.481-11.36, P = .009). The areas under the curve was 0.670 (95% CI: 0.550-0.792, P < .001). Multivariate logistic analysis showed that the CRP level was a significant independent predictor of pCR (OR = 5.882, 95% CI: 1.470-28.57, P = .017). High CRP levels were found to be associated with a higher pCR rate, indicating their independent predictive value in determining the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in hormone receptor-positive BC patients.

Abstract
Background The incidence of breast cancer (BC) is rampantly increasing in developing countries particularly Ethiopia. Unfortunately, the morbidity and mortality rates are sharply increasing, and because of this, families are suffering from socioeconomic crises. Despite this, there is limited evidence on the determinants of breast cancer in Ethiopia as well as in the study area. Objective To identify the determinants of BC among women attending oncology units in selected hospitals in Hawassa City, Ethiopia, in 2023. Method A hospital-based, case-control study with 300 patients (75 cases and 225 controls) was carried out in Hawassa from June to July 2023. A simple random sampling technique was used to select cases and controls. Data were collected via pretested and structured digitally installed questionnaires with Kobo collection/smartphones. The data were exported from the server to SPSS version 27 for analysis. Descriptive analysis of univariate, bivariate, and multivariable logistic regression data was conducted to determine the associations between breast cancer incidence and independent factors. Results A total of 300 women participated in this study for a response rate of 100%. The mean ( ± SD) ages of the respondents were 37.2 ( ± 14.8) and 36.6 ( ± 15.1) years for the cases and controls, respectively. According to the multivariate logistic regression model, postmenopausal status [AOR: 2.49; 95% CI (1.18, 5.23)], family history of cancer [AOR: 2.33; 95% CI (1.12, 4.82)], oral contraceptives [AOR: 2.74; 95% CI (1.34, 5.99)], overweight and/or obesity [AOR: 2.29; 95% CI: (1.14, 4.59)], and consumption of solid oil [AOR: 2.36; 95% CI (1.20, 4.67)] were independently associated with BC risk. Conclusion This study revealed important risk factors for BC. Therefore, women should adopt healthier lifestyles through healthy nutrition and regular exercise to reduce the risk of developing BC. In addition, early detection and regular screening are proactive approaches for detecting BC.

Abstract
Research has identified both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors for breast cancer (BC), with accumulating evidence showing that adopting adequate dietary practices could decrease the risk of this disease. This study aimed to assess nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and lifestyle practices (KAP) that may lead to BC risk reduction among female university students in Lebanon and examine the determinants of their practices. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sampling method, comprising 356 (response rate: 71.2%) female students at the American University of Beirut aged 18 to 25 years with no history of BC. Participants completed a pre-tested questionnaire addressing the objectives of the study. The modified Bloom's cut-off of 75% was used to categorize knowledge and practice scores as poor or good and attitudes as negative or positive. Large proportions of students had poor knowledge (68.3%), negative attitudes (65.4%), and poor practices (98.0%) scores. Pursuing a health-related major and having a higher GPA were associated with better knowledge and attitudes while being older and having a lower degree of stress were associated with positive attitudes only. Having a lower body mass index (BMI) was associated with better practice scores. Better knowledge significantly predicted higher intake of fruits and vegetables. Overall knowledge and attitudes were significantly correlated with each other, but neither was significantly correlated with overall practice. These findings underscore the importance of implementing public health programs geared towards improving nutrition KAP that may lead to BC risk reduction.

Abstract
The impact of dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs) on breast cancer risk may vary depending on their carbon chain lengths, attributable to the discrepancy in their dietary sources and biological activities. The associations between SFA subgroups classified by chain length and breast cancer risk remain controversial. In this case-control study, we aimed to investigate the association between the dietary intake of SFA subgroups, classified by chain lengths, and odds of breast cancer in China. This study included 1661 cases of breast cancer (confirmed as primary and histologically) and 1674 frequency-matched controls. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect basic information, while dietary intake information was obtained by a food frequency questionnaire. The unconditional logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). All SFA subgroups were inversely associated with odds of breast cancer. The adjusted ORs (95% CIs) were 0.78 (0.61-0.99) for medium-chain SFAs, 0.50 (0.31-0.83) for long even-chain SFAs, 0.69 (0.54-0.88) for long odd-chain, and 0.67 (0.48-0.95) for very long-chain SFAs, respectively. In the restricted cubic spline (RCS) models, a non-linear M-shaped association was observed between long odd-chain SFAs and odds of breast cancer (Pnon-linearity = 0.007). However, the associations of medium-chain SFAs, long even-chain SFAs, and very long-chain SFAs did not reach statistical significance (Pnon-linearity > 0.05). No significant interactions were observed between all these four subgroups of SFAs and menopausal status or BMI. Our findings emphasize the significance of elucidating the associations of dietary SFAs according to chain lengths, providing insights into the etiology as well as the potential benefits of SFA-rich food intake in reducing the risk of breast cancer. Further prospective cohort studies and intervention studies are warranted to confirm these findings and identify the underlying mechanisms of the association between dietary SFAs and breast cancer.

Abstract
Breast cancer has become the most diagnosed cancer worldwide in 2020 with high morbidity and mortality rates. The alarming increase in breast cancer incidence has sprung many researchers to focus on developing novel screening tests to identify early breast cancer which will allow clinicians to provide timely and effective treatments. With much evidence supporting the notion that the deregulation of miRNAs (a class of non-coding RNA) greatly contributes to cancer initiation and progression, the promising role of miRNAs as cancer biomarkers is gaining traction in the research world. Among the upregulated miRNAs identified in breast carcinogenesis, miR-21 was shown to be significantly expressed in breast cancer tissues and bodily fluids of breast cancer patients. Therein, this review paper aims to provide an overview of breast cancer, the role and significance of miR-21 in breast cancer pathogenesis, and its potential as a breast cancer biomarker. The paper also discusses the current types of tumor biomarkers and their limitations, the presence of miR-21 in extracellular vesicles and plasma, screening methods available for miRNA detection along with some challenges faced in developing diagnostic miR-21 testing for breast cancer to provide readers with a comprehensive outlook based on using miR-21 in clinical settings.

Abstract
PURPOSE This scoping review examines controllable predisposing factors attributable to cancer in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region's adult population, highlighting opportunities to enhance cancer prevention programs. DESIGN We systematically searched the PubMed, Science Direct, and CINAHL, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases from 1997 to 2022 for articles reporting on the impact of modifiable risk factors on adult patients with cancer in the MENA region. RESULTS The review identified 42 relevant articles, revealing that tobacco consumption, obesity, physical inactivity, and diet are significant modifiable risk factors for cancer in the region. Tobacco smoking is a leading cause of lung, bladder, squamous cell carcinoma, and colorectal cancer. A shift towards a westernized, calorie-dense diet has been observed, with some evidence suggesting that a Mediterranean diet may be protective against cancer. Obesity is a known risk factor for cancer, particularly breast malignancy, but further research is needed to determine its impact in the MENA region. Physical inactivity has been linked to colorectal cancer, but more studies are required to establish this relationship conclusively. Alcohol consumption, infections, and exposure to environmental carcinogens are additional risk factors, although the literature on these topics is limited. CONCLUSION The review emphasizes the need for further research and the development of targeted cancer prevention strategies in the MENA region.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The COVID-19 pandemic induced an extraordinary impact on public mental health to a degree not completely understood, especially in vulnerable populations such as breast cancer (BC) survivors. In this study, we described the short- (after 3-month) and long- (after 12-month) term effects of a multidisciplinary home-based lifestyle intervention in Italian women BC survivors during the first year of COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 30 Italian BC survivors with risk factors for recurrence took part in the ongoing MoviS trial (protocol: NCT04818359). Between January 2020 and January 2021, a 3-month lifestyle intervention based on psychological counseling, nutrition, and exercise was carried out. Participants were asked to fill out psychological questionnaires for the assessment of quality of life (QoL) indicators (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL, EORTC-QLQ-C30) and psychological health measures such as fatigue (Brief Fatigue Inventory, BFI), distress (Distress Thermometer, DT and Psychological Distress Inventory, PDI), cancer-related fatigue (Verbal Rating Scale, VRS), and mood states (Profile of Mood States Questionnaire, POMS). IBM SPSS Statistical Software version 27.0 and R Project for Statistical Computing version 4.2.1 were used to process data. All participants were assessed at four time points: T0 (baseline), T1 (3-month), and follow-up at T2 and T3 (6- and 12-month, respectively) to measure primary (quality of life indicators) and secondary (psychological health) outcomes. Friedman non parametric test and Wilcoxon signed rank test (with Bonferroni correction) were conducted to investigate the statistically significant differences in psychometric scores and between assessment times. RESULTS Compared to baseline (T0), at T1 most of the QoL indicators (i.e., symptoms of fatigue and general health) were improved (p < 0.017) with the exception of a worsening in participants' social functioning ability. Also, perception of severity of fatigue, distress, cancer-related fatigue, depression, and anger enhanced. Compared to baseline (T0), at T3 we mainly observed a stable condition with T0-T1 pairwise comparison, however other secondary outcomes (i.e., fatigue mood state, confusion, and anxiety) significantly improved. DISCUSSION Our preliminary findings support the proposal of this lifestyle intervention for BC survivors. Despite the home-confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the intervention surprisingly improved QoL indicators and psychological health of the participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of antidepressants has increased over the years, but the relationship between antidepressant use and the risk of breast cancer is not uniform because of confounding factors. We aimed to assess the effect of antidepressants on breast cancer risk using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach.stet METHODS: Secondary data analysis was performed on pooled data from genome-wide association studies based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms that were highly correlated with antidepressants, SSRI drugs, and serotonin and prolactin levels were selected as instrumental variables to evaluate the association between antidepressants and SSRI drugs and prolactin levels with breast cancer and ER+/ER- breast cancer. We then performed a test of the hypothesis that SSRI drugs elevate prolactin concentrations. We performed two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses using inverse variance weighting, MR-Egger regression, and weighted median methods, respectively. RESULTS There was no significant risk association between antidepressant and SSRI use and the development of breast cancer, ER-positive or ER-negative breast cancer (P > 0.05), and serotonin concentration was not associated with breast cancer risk (P > 0.05). There was a positive causal relationship between prolactin levels and breast cancer (IVW, P = 0.02, OR = 1.058) and ER-positive breast cancer (Weighted median, P = 0.043, OR = 1.141; IVW, P = 0.009, OR = 1.125). Results in SSRI medication and prolactin levels showed no association between SSRI analogs and prolactin levels (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Large MR analysis showed that antidepressants as well as SSRI drugs were not associated with breast cancer risk and the SSRI-prolactin-breast cancer hypothesis did not hold in our analysis.

Abstract
AIMS This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the relationship between live birth and the prevalence of obesity in Chinese women over 40 years of age. METHODS From April to November 2011, the Endocrinology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association conducted the REACTION project, a national, multicenter, cross-sectional study of Chinese adults aged 40 years and older. Demographic and medical data were collected through validated questionnaires and equipment. Anthropometric indicators, blood pressure, and biochemical data were measured by professional medical personnel. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic analysis. Multivariate regression models were used to analyze obesity-related risk factors. RESULTS The prevalence of obesity among women increased gradually from 3.8% to 6.0% with an increasing number of live births. Women with two live births had the highest prevalence of overweight at 34.3%. Overall, the obesity and overweight rates were slightly higher in premenopausal women than in postmenopausal women. Univariate regression analysis showed that the risk of obesity in women increased with an increasing number of live births. In addition, multivariate regression analysis showed that the risk of obesity increased with an increasing number of live births in women with systolic blood pressure (SBP) < 121 mmHg or current smoking (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The risk of obesity increases with the number of live births in Chinese women over 40 years of age with SBP < 121 mmHg or current smoking. Our findings may facilitate the development of interventions to prevent obesity in this population.

Abstract
Developing new drugs from natural products is important for therapeutic effects to minimise tissue toxicity of drugs used in cancer treatment. Eisenia foetida is a worm with a double transport system consisting of coelomic fluid (ECF) that can be used as alternative medicine. It is important to eliminate or reduce the high cytotoxicity of sodium butyrate (NaBu), a chemotherapeutic agent used in breast cancer treatment, for both neoplastic and normal cells. We aimed to evaluate the effect of ECF on the oxidative toxicity induced by NaBu in MCF-7 cells, changes in ROS production levels and expression of cell death and ROS-related genes. It was determined that the expression levels of Bax and Bcl-2 genes remained unchanged, while the amount of ROS decreased significantly in MCF-7 cells exposed to NaBu with ECF. Thus, ECF may be a potential therapeutic molecule with fewer side effects in cancer treatment in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined whether associations between the food environment, frequency of home cooking, diet quality and BMI were modified by the level of cooking skills. DESIGN Cross-sectional study using linear and modified Poisson regression models adjusted for age, sex, energy intake, education, income, household size and urbanisation. The frequency of home cooking was categorised into <6 and 6-7 d. Diet quality was based on a validated Dutch healthy diet index (0-150 points). Count of restaurants and food stores were determined by their count in a 1000m buffer around home and work. Cooking skills (score 1-5) were assessed using a validated questionnaire and added as interaction term. SETTING The Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS 1461 adults aged 18-65 years. RESULTS Count of restaurants and food stores were not associated with the frequency of home cooking. A 10-unit higher count of food stores was associated with a higher diet quality (β: 0·58 (95 % CI (0·04, 1·12)), and a 10-unit higher count of restaurants was associated with a lower BMI kg/m2 (β: -0·02 (95 % CI (-0·04, -0·004)). Better cooking skills were associated with a higher likelihood of cooking 6-7 d compared with <6 d (risk ratio: 1·24 (95 % CI (1·16, 1·31)) and a higher diet quality (β: 4·45 (95 % CI (3·27, 5·63)) but not with BMI. We observed no interaction between the food environment and cooking skills (P-for-interaction > 0·1). CONCLUSIONS Exposure to food stores was associated with a higher diet quality and exposure to restaurants with a lower BMI. Better cooking skills were associated with a higher frequency of home cooking and better diet quality but did not modify associations with the food environment. Future studies should explore different approaches to understand how individuals interact with their food environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Socioeconomic status (SES) at birth is associated with breast cancer risk. Whether this association is driven by changes in breast tissue composition (BTC) prior to adulthood remains unclear. METHODS We used multivariable linear regression models to examine whether SES at birth is associated with BTC in adolescence and adulthood using data from a New York City cohort of daughters (n = 165, 11-20 years) and mothers (n = 160, 29-55 years). We used maternal-reported data on daughters' household income and maternal education at birth, analyzed individually and in combination (SES index). Women also reported their own mothers' education at birth. We used optical spectroscopy to evaluate BTC measures that positively (water content, collagen content, optical index) and negatively (lipid content) correlate with mammographic breast density, a recognized breast cancer risk factor. RESULTS Being in the highest versus lowest category of the SES index was associated with lower lipid content [βadjusted (βadj) = -0.80; 95% confidence interval (CI), -1.30 to -0.31] and higher collagen content (βadj = 0.54; 95% CI, 0.09-0.99) in adolescence. In women with a body mass index (BMI) <30 kg/m2, higher maternal education at birth (≥ vs. < high school degree) was associated with lower lipid content (βadj = -0.57; 95% CI, -0.97 to -0.17), higher water content (βadj = 0.70; 95% CI, 0.26-1.14), and higher optical index (βadj = 0.53; 95% CI, 0.10-0.95). CONCLUSIONS This study supports that SES at birth is associated with BTC in adolescence and adulthood, although the latter association may depend on adult BMI. IMPACT Further research is needed to identify the socially patterned early life factors influencing BTC.

Abstract
In North Carolina, over 6000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer yearly, and over 1000 will die. It is well known that environmental conditions contribute greatly to health outcomes, and many of these factors include a geographic component. Using death data records from 2003-2019 extracted from North Carolina Vital Statistics Dataverse, a spatial database was developed to map and analyze female breast cancer mortality rates at the ZIP code scale in North Carolina. Thirty-nine hot spots and thirty cold spots of age-adjusted death rates were identified using the Getis-Ord analysis. Two-tailed t-tests were run between each cohort for environmental socioeconomic-related factors associated with breast cancer progression and mortality. The median age and household income of individuals who resided in ZIP codes with the highest breast cancer mortality were significantly lower than those who lived in ZIP codes with lower breast cancer mortality. The poverty rate, percentage of SNAP benefits, and the percentage of minorities were all significantly higher (p < 0.05, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001) in ZIP codes with high breast cancer rates. High-quality (ZIP code) granular cancer data were developed for which detailed analysis can be performed for future studies.

Abstract
Obesity has been linked with numerous health issues as well as an increased risk of breast cancer. Although effects of direct obesity in patient outcomes is widely studied, effects of exposure to obesity-related systemic influences in utero have been overlooked. In this study, we investigated the effect of multigenerational obesity on epithelial cell migration and invasion using decellularized breast tissues explanted from normal female mouse pups from a diet induced multigenerational obesity mouse model. We first studied the effect of multigenerational diet on the mechanical properties, adipocyte size, and collagen structure of these mouse breast tissues, and then, examined the migration and invasion behavior of normal (KTB-21) and cancerous (MDA-MB-231) human mammary epithelial cells on the decellularized matrices from each diet group. Breast tissues of mice whose dams had been fed with high-fat diet exhibited larger adipocytes and thicker and curvier collagen fibers, but only slightly elevated elastic modulus and inflammatory cytokine levels. MDA-MB-231 cancer cell motility and invasion were significantly greater on the decellularized matrices from mice whose dams were fed with high-fat diet. A similar trend was observed with normal KTB-21 cells. Our results showed that the collagen curvature was the dominating factor on this enhanced motility and stretching the matrices to equalize the collagen fiber linearity of the matrices ameliorated the observed increase in cell migration and invasion in the mice that were exposed to a high-fat diet in utero. Previous studies indicated an increase in serum leptin concentration for those children born to an obese mother. We generated extracellular matrices using primary fibroblasts exposed to various concentrations of leptin. This produced curvier ECM and increased breast cancer cell motility for cells seeded on the decellularized ECM generated with increasing leptin concentration. Our study shows that exposure to obesity in utero is influential in determining the extracellular matrix structure, and that the resultant change in collagen curvature is a critical factor in regulating the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells.

Abstract
New technologies have provided suitable tools for rapid diagnosis of cancer which can reduce treatment costs and even increase patients' survival rates. Recently, the development of electrochemical aptamer-based nanobiosensors has raised great hopes for early, sensitive, selective, and low-cost cancer diagnosis. Here, we reviewed the flagged recent research (2021-2023) developed as a series of biosensors equipped with nanomaterials and aptamer sequences (nanoaptasensors) to diagnose/prognosis of various types of cancers. Equipping these aptasensors with nanomaterials and using advanced biomolecular technologies have provided specified biosensing interfaces for more optimal and reliable detection of cancer biomarkers. The primary intention of this review was to present and categorize the latest innovations used in the design of these diagnostic tools, including the hottest surface modifications and assembly of sensing bioplatforms considering diagnostic mechanisms. The main classification is based on applying various nanomaterials and sub-classifications considered based on the type of analyte and other vital features. This review may help design subsequent electrochemical aptasensors. Likewise, the up-to-date status, remaining limitations, and possible paths for translating aptasensors to clinical cancer assay tools can be clarified.

Abstract
Dietary quality is an important factor in the etiology of breast cancer (BrCa), but further studies are required to better elucidate this relationship. Accordingly, we sought to analyze if diet quality, assessed using the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I), Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR), and Dietary Energy Density (DED), was related to BrCa. In this Hospital-based case-control study, 253 patients with BrCa and 267 non BrCa controls were enrolled. Individual food consumption data from a food frequency questionnaire was used to calculate the Diet Quality Indices (DQI). Employing a case-control design, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained, and a dose-response analysis investigated. After adjusting for potential confounders, those in the highest quartile of the MAR index had significantly lower odds of BrCa than those in the lowest (OR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.23-0.78; P for trend = 0.007). Although there was no association between individual quartiles of the DQI-I and BrCa, there was evidence of a significant trend across all the quartile categories (P for trend = 0.030).There was no significant association was found between DED index and the odds of BrCa in the crude and fully adjusted models. We found that higher MAR indices were associated with decreased odds of BrCa, Therefore, the dietary patterns reflected by these scores may serve as a possible guide to preventing BrCa in Iranian women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Due to the composition and biological properties of coconut oil, there is still considerable debate regarding potential benefits for the management of obesity, including the specific impact on body weight (BW) reduction. This systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials aims to assess the impact of coconut oil on BW reduction in comparison to other oils and fats. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION The databases, PubMed®, Web of Science®, EMBASE®, and SciVerse Scopus® were systematically searched. A combination of medical subject headings and words linked to coconut oil and obesity parameters were utilized. Any clinical trials comparing coconut oil to any other form of oil or fat, with more than one month feeding period among adults were considered. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS From the 540 potentially relevant papers, 9 were included. The period of coconut oil intake varied from four to twelve weeks, apart from one long-term trial where coconut oil was consumed for two years. When compared to other oils and fats, coconut oil substantially decreased BW (N.=546), Body Mass Index (BMI) (N.=551), and percentage of fat mass (FM%) (N.=491) by 0.75 kg (P=0.04), 0.28 kg/m2 (P=0.03), and 0.35% (P=0.008), respectively. Coconut oil consumption did not result in any significant alteration in waist circumference (WC) (N.=385) (-0.61 cm; P=0.30), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (N.=330) (-0.01; P=0.39) and FM (N.=86) (-0.25 kg; P=0.29). CONCLUSIONS Results indicate a small statistically significant reduction in BW, BMI, and FM% in the coconut oil group. In contrast, consumption of coconut oil had no statistically significant effect on WC, WHR, or FM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer and a major cause of mortality among women. Breast self-examination (BSE) is a key technique for early diagnosis of breast cancer, which, along with lifestyle changes, can alleviate the risk of mortality. This study aimed to examine the effect of self-care training programs on lifestyle change and BSE of immigrant Afghan women residing in Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this quasi-experimental study, 140 immigrant Afghan women visiting health-care centers in Shiraz (Iran) were selected via convenience sampling during 2019-2020. The data were collected using a lifestyle questionnaire, a demographic information checklist, and a BSE checklist. Following the pretest, the experimental group received three sessions of self-care training and took the posttest 2 months after the intervention. The control group did not receive any intervention, but took the same posttest 2 months after the pretest. Data analysis was performed using paired and independent t-test and Chi-squared test in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 22. RESULTS The post-intervention level of knowledge and performance of the experimental group significantly increased in terms of a healthy lifestyle (P < 0.001) and performance of BSE (P < 0.001) compared to the control group. The intervention also had a significant positive effect (P < 0.000) on all dimensions of lifestyle. CONCLUSION Self-care training for lifestyle and BSE can promote the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer in immigrant Afghan women who have limited access to health care.

Abstract
Childhood caries experience is influenced by family characteristics and oral health practices in the context of many social-commercial determinants. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between families' number of children, oral health practices and child caries experience in a convenience sample of 1374 children aged 6 months through 6 years and their families from Ecuador, Nepal, and Vietnam. Data were collected by mother interviews and child dental exams. Multivariate logistic and Zero-Inflated-Poisson regression analyses assessed associations between number of children, oral health practices and decayed, missing or filled teeth (dmft). Families had a mean of 2.2 children (range 1-12); 72% of children had tooth decay, with mean dmft of 5.4. Adjusting for child age, sex, and urban/rural location, a greater number of children in the family was associated with significantly less likelihood of unhealthy bottle feeding practices, having a toothbrush/toothpaste and parent helping child brush, and being cavity-free; higher number of dmft, and greater likelihood of having a dental visit. Early childhood oral health promotion should include focus on oral hygiene and healthy feeding-particularly breastfeeding and healthy bottle feeding practices-as well as access to family planning services and support for childcare.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of selected polyphenolic compounds: epicatechin, apigenin, and naringenin, administered separately or in combination with zinc (Zn), on the growth and development of the neoplastic process induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in rats. The impact of supplementation with the above-mentioned compounds on the content of modified derivatives: 1-methyladenosine, N6-methyl-2'-deoxyadenosine, O-methylguanosine, 7-methylguanine, 3-methyladenine, 1-methylguanine, 2-amino-6,8-dihydroxypurine, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in the urine of rats with mammary cancer was also assessed. Female Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 7 groups were used in the study: animals without supplementation and animals supplemented with apigenin, epicatechin, and naringenin separately or in combination with zinc. To induce mammary cancer, rats were treated with DMBA. Modified derivatives were determined by a validated high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry method. Based on the obtained results, it can be said that supplementation of the animals with naringenin inhibits the development and progression of the neoplastic process in rats treated with 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene. Neoplastic tumors were found in only 2 of 8 rats (incidence: 25%) and were considered to be at most grade 1 malignancy. The first palpable tumors in the group of animals receiving naringenin appeared two-three weeks later when compared to other groups. The combination of zinc with flavonoids (apigenin, epicatechin, and naringenin) seems to stimulate the process of carcinogenesis. The level of N6-methyl-2'-deoxyadenosine and 3-methyladenine in the urine of rats was statistically significantly higher in the groups supplemented with apigenin, epicatechin, and naringenin administered in combination with Zn than in the groups receiving only polyphenolic compounds. In conclusion, supplementation of rats with selected flavonoids administered separately or in combination with Zn has an impact on the development of neoplasms and the level of modified nucleosides in the urine of rats with breast cancer. Our results raise the question of whether simultaneous diet supplementation with more than one anti-cancer agent may reduce/stimulate the risk of carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer is widely regarded as a complex disease primarily driven by genetic mutations. A critical concern and significant obstacle lies in discerning driver genes amid an extensive array of passenger genes. FINDINGS We present a new method termed DriverMP for effectively prioritizing altered genes on a cancer-type level by considering mutated gene pairs. It is designed to first apply nonsilent somatic mutation data, protein‒protein interaction network data, and differential gene expression data to prioritize mutated gene pairs, and then individual mutated genes are prioritized based on prioritized mutated gene pairs. Application of this method in 10 cancer datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas demonstrated its great improvements over all the compared state-of-the-art methods in identifying known driver genes. Then, a comprehensive analysis demonstrated the reliability of the novel driver genes that are strongly supported by clinical experiments, disease enrichment, or biological pathway analysis. CONCLUSIONS The new method, DriverMP, which is able to identify driver genes by effectively integrating the advantages of multiple kinds of cancer data, is available at https://github.com/LiuYangyangSDU/DriverMP. In addition, we have developed a novel driver gene database for 10 cancer types and an online service that can be freely accessed without registration for users. The DriverMP method, the database of novel drivers, and the user-friendly online server are expected to contribute to new diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities for cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipose tissue is a major component of breast stroma. This study focused on delineating the effects of adipose stem cells (ASCs) derived from breast of healthy women and cancer patients with normal or tumor breast cells. METHODS The ASCs were induced to differentiate into adipocytes, and the subsequent adipocyte conditioned media (ACM) were evaluated for their fatty acid profile, adipokine secretion and influence on proliferation, migration and invasion on tumoral (MCF-7 and SUM159) and normal (HMEC) human breast cell lines. RESULTS An enrichment of arachidonic acid was observed in ACM from tumor tissues. Adipose tissues from tumor free secrete twice as much leptin than those from proximal or distal to the tumor. All ACMs display proliferative activity and favor invasiveness of SUM159 cells compared to MCF-7 and HMEC. All ACMs induced lipid droplets accumulation in MCF-7 cells and increased CD36 expression in tumor cells. CONCLUSION We conclude that among secreted factors analyzed, only arachidonic acid and leptin levels did discriminate ASCs from tumor-bearing and tumor-free breasts emphasizing the importance that other cell types could contribute to the adipose tissue secretome in a tumor context.

Abstract
Introduction The link between dietary fats and obesity is still controversial, as in Western diets the percentage of energy from total fat has decreased while the intake of omega-6 has increased, and omega-3 decreased. These changes have corresponded with a significant increase in the prevalence of obesity. Objective This study aims to examine the association of percentages of energy intake (EI) from omega-3 and omega-6 and Σω-6/Σω-3 ratio with BMI and two proxy indicators of central obesity (waist circumference [WC], waist-to-height ratio [WHtR]) and relative fat mass (RFM) estimator of whole-body fat. Design A representative sample of 3,733 adults was used from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme (2008/09-2018/19). An estimated four-day food record was used to calculate dietary intake. Regression models were used to verify the association of omega-3 and omega-6 and quintiles of Σω-6/ Σω-3 ratio with general and abdominal obesity with adjustment for important confounders. A p-value of <0.05 represented statistical significance. Results The findings of this study show that the average ratio of Σω-6/Σω-3 was 5.5:1 ± 2. There was a significant association between the ratio of Σω-6/Σω-3 and BMI, WC, WHtR and RFM. However, the percentage of total EI from total fat was only significant with BMI, while the percentage of EI from omega-3 was negatively associated with WC, WHtR and RFM. No association was found between the percentage of EI from omega-6 and general or abdominal obesity. Conclusion The effect of Σω-6/Σω-3 may be largely driven by a deficiency in the intake of omega-3. Omega-6 and omega-3 should be listed as such in national surveys instead of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). Meeting recommended levels of omega-3 and lowering Σω-6/Σω-3 are imperative to establish healthier dietary patterns and prevent obesity.

Abstract
Mammary gland tumor is rare and only a few cases have been reported in wild animals. Moreover, most etiologies of the known cases in veterinary medicine are related to age, diet, obesity, and excessive sex hormones in domestic animals while few etiologies are reported in wild animals. An unknown-aged female wild boar was presented to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Kyungpook National University with a well-demarcated, and firm-to-elastic mammary gland mass. The cut-surface of the mass was pink-reddish, and homogeneous. Microscopically, the mass was mainly composed of well-differentiated neoplastic glandular epithelial cells characterized by a single-layer, columnar to cuboidal shapes, and small and central nuclei and nucleoli. Any evidence of invasiveness or metastases of the neoplastic cells were not observed. Interestingly, infiltration of chronic inflammatory cells such as plasma cells and macrophages was observed along with a large quantity of gram-negative and positive bacterial colonies in the mammary glands. Moreover, accompanied fibrosis of stroma was observed, as well. Based on the gross and microscopic findings, the present case was diagnosed as mammary simple adenoma caused by chronic mastitis progressing to fibrotic condition. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study describing the histopathological aspects of mammary gland tumors associated with chronic mastitis accompanied by fibrosis in wild animals.

Abstract
Obesity is a complex metabolic condition considered a worldwide public health crisis, and a deeper mechanistic understanding of obesity-associated diseases is urgently needed. Obesity comorbidities include many associated cancers and are estimated to account for 20% of female cancer deaths in the USA. Breast cancer, in particular, is associated with obesity and is the focus of this review. The exact causal links between obesity and breast cancer remain unclear. Still, interactions have emerged between body mass index, tumor molecular subtype, genetic background, and environmental factors that strongly suggest obesity influences the risk and progression of certain breast cancers. Supportive preclinical research uses various diet-induced obesity models to demonstrate that weight loss, via dietary interventions or changes in energy expenditure, reduces the onset or progression of breast cancers. Ongoing and future studies are now aimed at elucidating the underpinning mechanisms behind weight-loss-driven observations to improve therapy and outcomes in patients with breast cancer and reduce risk. This review aims to summarize the rapidly emerging literature on obesity and weight loss strategies with a focused discussion of bariatric surgery in both clinical and preclinical studies detailing the complex interactions between metabolism, immune response, and immunotherapy in the setting of obesity and breast cancer.

Abstract
Background This Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) Clinical Practice Statement (CPS) provides an overview of cancer and increased body fat. Methods The scientific information for this CPS is based upon published scientific citations, clinical perspectives of OMA authors, and peer review by the Obesity Medicine Association leadership. Results Topics include the increased risk of cancers among patients with obesity, cancer risk factor population-attributable fractions, genetic and epigenetic links between obesity and cancer, adiposopathic and mechanistic processes accounting for increased cancer risk among patients with obesity, the role of oxidative stress, and obesity-related cancers based upon Mendelian randomization and observational studies. Other topics include nutritional and physical activity principles for patients with obesity who either have cancer or are at risk for cancer, and preventive care as it relates to cancer and obesity. Conclusions Obesity is the second most common preventable cause of cancer and may be the most common preventable cause of cancer among nonsmokers. This Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) Clinical Practice Statement (CPS) on cancer is one of a series of OMA CPSs designed to assist clinicians in the care of patients with the disease of obesity. Patients with obesity are at greater risk of developing certain types of cancers, and treatment of obesity may influence the risk, onset, progression, and recurrence of cancer in patients with obesity.

Abstract
Pathways that regulate protein homeostasis (proteostasis) in cells range from mRNA processing to protein degradation; perturbations in regulatory mechanisms of these pathways can lead to oncogenic cellular processes. Protein synthesis modulation failures are common phenomena in cancer cells, wherein specific conditions that promote the translation of protein factors promoting carcinogenesis are present. These specific conditions may be favored by metabolic lipid alterations like those found in metabolic syndrome and obesity. Protein translation modifications have been described in obesity, favoring the translation of protein targets that benefit lipid accumulation; a determining factor is the activity of the cap-binding eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), a crosstalk in protein translation and lipogenesis. Besides, alterations of protein translation initiation steps are critical participants for the development of both pathogenic conditions, cancer, and obesity. This chapter is focused on the regulation of recognition and processing of carcinogenic-mRNA and the connections among lipid metabolism and cell signaling pathways that promote oncogenesis, tumoral microenvironment generation and potentially the development of chemoresistance. We performed an in-depth analysis of events, such as those occurring in obesity and dyslipidemias, that may influence protein translation, driving the recognition of certain mRNAs and favoring cancer development and chemoresistance.

Abstract
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and the cognate receptor, named RAGE, are involved in metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Moreover, the AGEs/RAGE transduction pathway prompts a dysfunctional interaction between breast cancer cells and tumor stroma toward the acquisition of malignant features. However, the action of the AGEs/RAGE axis in the main players of the tumor microenvironment, named breast cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), remains to be fully explored. In the present study, by chemokine array, we first assessed that interleukin-8 (IL-8) is the most up-regulated pro-inflammatory chemokine upon AGEs/RAGE activation in primary CAFs, obtained from breast tumors. Thereafter, we ascertained that the AGEs/RAGE signaling promotes a network cascade in CAFs, leading to the c-Fos-dependent regulation of IL-8. Next, using a conditioned medium from AGEs-exposed CAFs, we determined that IL-8/CXCR1/2 paracrine activation induces the acquisition of migratory and invasive features in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Altogether, our data provide new insights on the involvement of IL-8 in the AGEs/RAGE transduction pathway among the intricate connections linking breast cancer cells to the surrounding stroma. Hence, our findings may pave the way for further investigations to define the role of IL-8 as useful target for the better management of breast cancer patients exhibiting metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery is a sustainable weight loss approach, including vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG). Obesity exacerbates tumor growth, while diet-induced weight loss impairs progression. It remains unknown how bariatric surgery-induced weight loss impacts cancer progression or alters response to therapy. Using a pre-clinical model of obesity followed by VSG or diet-induced weight loss, breast cancer progression and immune checkpoint blockade therapy were investigated. Weight loss by VSG or weight-matched dietary intervention before tumor engraftment protected against obesity-exacerbated tumor progression. However, VSG was not as effective as diet in reducing tumor burden despite achieving similar weight and adiposity loss. Leptin did not associate with changes in tumor burden; however, circulating IL-6 was elevated in VSG mice. Uniquely, VSG tumors displayed elevated inflammation and immune checkpoint ligand PD-L1+ myeloid and non-immune cells. VSG tumors also had reduced T lymphocytes and markers of cytolysis, suggesting an ineffective anti-tumor microenvironment which prompted investigation of immune checkpoint blockade. While obese mice were resistant to immune checkpoint blockade, anti-PD-L1 potently impaired tumor progression after VSG through improved anti-tumor immunity. Thus, in formerly obese mice, surgical weight loss followed by immunotherapy reduced breast cancer burden. Finally, we compared transcriptomic changes in adipose tissue after bariatric surgery from patients and mouse models. A conserved bariatric surgery-associated weight loss signature (BSAS) was identified which significantly associated with decreased tumor volume. Findings demonstrate conserved impacts of obesity and bariatric surgery-induced weight loss pathways associated with breast cancer progression. As the number of people classified as obese rises globally, so do obesity-related health risks. Studies show that people diagnosed with obesity have inflammation that contributes to tumor growth and their immune system is worse at detecting cancer cells. But weight loss is not currently used as a strategy for preventing or treating cancer. Surgical procedures for weight loss, also known as ‘bariatric surgeries’, are becoming increasingly popular. Recent studies have shown that individuals who lose weight after these treatments have a reduced risk of developing tumors. But how bariatric surgery directly impacts cancer progression has not been well studied: does it slow tumor growth or boost the anti-tumor immune response? To answer these questions, Sipe et al. compared breast tumor growth in groups of laboratory mice that were obese due to being fed a high fat diet. The first group of mice lost weight after undergoing a bariatric surgery in which part of their stomach was removed. The second lost the same amount of weight but after receiving a restricted diet, and the third underwent a fake surgery and did not lose any weight. The experiments found that surgical weight loss cuts breast cancer tumor growth in half compared with obese mice. But mice who lost the same amount of weight through dietary restrictions had even less tumor growth than surgically treated mice. The surgically treated mice who lost weight had more inflammation than mice in the two other groups, and had increased amounts of proteins and cells that block the immune response to tumors. Giving the surgically treated mice a drug that enhances the immune system’s ability to detect and destroy cancer cells reduced inflammation and helped shrink the mice’s tumors. Finally, Sipe et al. identified 54 genes which were turned on or off after bariatric surgery in both mice and humans, 11 of which were linked with tumor size. These findings provide crucial new information about how bariatric surgery can impact cancer progression. Future studies could potentially use the conserved genes identified by Sipe et al. to develop new ways to stimulate the anti-cancer benefits of weight loss without surgery.

Abstract
While obesity is linked to cancer risk, no studies have explored the consequences of body mass index (BMI) on fatty acid profiles in breast adipose tissue and on breast tumor aggressiveness indicators. Because of this, 261 breast adipose tissue samples of women with invasive breast carcinoma were analyzed. Fatty acid profile was established by gas chromatography. For normal-weight women, major changes in fatty acid profile occurs after menopause, with the enrichment of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) of both n-6 and n-3 series enrichment, but a stable LC-PUFAs n-6/n-3 ratio across age. BMI impact was analyzed by age subgroups to overcome the age effect. BMI increase is associated with LC-PUFAs n-6 accumulation, including arachidonic acid. Positive correlations between BMI and several LC-PUFAs n-6 were observed, as well as a strong imbalance in the LC-PUFAs n-6/n-3 ratio. Regarding cancer, axillary lymph nodes (p = 0.02) and inflammatory breast cancer (p = 0.08) are more frequently involved in obese women. Increased BMI induces an LC-PUFAs n-6 accumulation, including arachidonic acid, in adipose tissue. This may participate in the development of low-grade inflammation in obese women and breast tumor progression. These results suggest the value of lifestyle and LC-PUFAs n-3 potential, in the context of obesity and breast cancer secondary/tertiary prevention.

Abstract
Background: Triclosan, bisphenol A (BPA), and brominated flame retardants are environmental estrogenic endocrine-disrupting compounds that may influence the prognosis of breast cancer. We examined the urinary concentrations of these compounds and their associations with demographic characteristics and body fatness in a population of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Methods: Overnight urine collection and anthropometric measures were obtained from 302 participants. Triclosan, BPA, tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and tetrabromobenzoic acid (TBBA) concentrations were determined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography−tandem mass spectrometry. Regression analyses were conducted to examine associations of urinary compound concentration with age, menopause, race, ethnicity, educational level, estrogen receptor status, body size, and body composition. Results: Triclosan, BPA, and TBBA were detected in urine samples from 98.3%, 6.0%, and 0.3% of patients, respectively; TBBPA was undetectable. Among patients with quantifiable values, the geometric mean concentrations were 20.74 µg/L (27.04 µg/g creatinine) for triclosan and 0.82 µg/L (1.08 µg/g creatinine) for BPA. Body mass index ≥ 30 vs. <25 kg/m2 was associated with lower creatinine-corrected urinary concentrations of triclosan (−40.00, 95% confidence interval [CI] = −77.19 to −2.81; p = 0.0351). The observed association was predominantly in postmenopausal women (−66.57; 95% CI: −109.18% to −23.96%). Consistent results were found for associations between triclosan levels and fat mass variables. Conclusion: In this study population, women with newly diagnosed breast cancer had triclosan exposure. Assessments of the implications of urinary concentrations of triclosan for women should consider body fatness and menopausal status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Breast cancer prevalence remains high worldwide, including in Indonesia. Studies examining relationship between obesity, dietary habit, sedentary lifestyle, and breast cancer development are largely inconclusive.
AIM: This study aimed to determine relationship between obesity, dietary habit, sedentary lifestyle, and breast cancer risk among women at Yogyakarta Province in Indonesia.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study on 135 women selected purposively during March–May 2019. Binary logistic regression models were employed in the analysis with 0.05 considered significant.
RESULTS: Among study subjects, 54.07% and 40% were, respectively, ≥40 years old and smokers. About 53.33% consumed preserved food 3–6 times/week, and 49% and 50.37% consumed sweet food and beverage >1 time/ day, respectively. High body mass index (BMI) and physical inactivity were associated with 93% and 85% breast cancer risk reductions (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.07, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.01–0.45, p < 0.01 and AOR: 0.15, 95% CI: 0.05–0.47, p < 0.001). Smoking showed no significant relationship. A waist circumference (WC) of ≤80 was linked to 78% breast cancer risk reduction. Sweet food, sweet beverage, and energy drink consumption of >1 time/day led to 96%, 36%, and 84% reductions of invasive breast cancer risks. Meanwhile, consumption of preserved food 3–6 times/weeks and soft drinks >1 time/day correlated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
CONCLUSION: High BMI, physical inactivity, and lower WC were associated with the lower breast cancer risk, while preserved food and soft drink consumption significantly increase the risk. Although sedentary lifestyle seems to have a small protective effect, healthy lifestyle should be encouraged and effective strategies are required to encourage women to adopt healthy lifestyle.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the cytotoxicity induced by an omega-3 derivative, didocosahexaenoin (Dido) on human prostate carcinoma cells and to compare the cytotoxicity to that of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Different carcinoma- and non-carcinoma cells were exposed to various concentrations of omega-3 compounds at varying exposure times and the cytotoxicity was measured by MTT assay. The mechanism of Dido-induced apoptosis was investigated in prostate carcinoma cells. Dido induced stronger cytotoxicity than DHA in human prostate carcinoma cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Dido was also more selective and potent in inducing cytotoxicity in prostate carcinoma cells than other carcinoma cell lines tested. Pre-treatment with Dido increased the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in prostate carcinoma cells. Pre-treatment with various antioxidants reduced the cytotoxicity induced by Dido. Pre-treatment with Dido ≥30 μM also induced apoptosis which was suggested to involve an externalisation of phosphatidyl serine, a significant increase in the mitochondrial membrane potential (p < 0.01) and the level of activated caspase 3/7 (p < 0.05) in prostate carcinoma cells. This study is the first to show that Dido induced cytotoxicity with high selectivity and higher potency than DHA in human prostate carcinoma cells. The mechanism of action is likely to involve an increase in the level of ROS, loss in the mitochondrial membrane potential as well as externalisation of phosphatidyl serine and increase in the caspase 3/7 activity. Dido may have potential to be used for the adjuvant therapy or combination therapy with conventional chemotherapeutic drugs.

Abstract
Background: DNA methylation is influenced by environmental factors and contributes to adverse modification of cancer risk and clinicopathological features. Methods: A case-control study (402 newly diagnosed cases, 470 controls) was conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental factors and OPRM1 methylation in peripheral blood leukocyte (PBL) DNA on the risk of breast cancer. A case-only study (373 cases) was designed to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on OPRM1 methylation in tumor tissue and the relationship of methylation with clinicopathological features. Results: We found a significant association between hypermethylation of OPRM1 and the risk of breast cancer (OR = 1.914, 95%CI = 1.357–2.777). OPRM1 hypermethylation in PBL DNA combined with low intake of vegetable, garlic, soybean, poultry, and milk; high pork intake; less regular sports and a high psychological stress index significantly increased the risk of breast cancer. Soybean intake (OR = 0.425, 95%CI: 0.231–0.781) and regular sports (OR = 0.624, 95%CI: 0.399–0.976) were associated with OPRM1 hypermethylation in tumor DNA. OPRM1 hypermethylation in tumor tissue was correlated with estrogen receptor (ER) (OR = 1.945, 95%CI: 1.262–2.996) and progesterone receptor (PR) (OR = 1.611, 95%CI: 1.069–2.427) negative status; in addition, OPRM1 hypermethylation in PBL DNA was associated with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) negative status (OR = 3.673, 95%CI: 1.411–9.564). Conclusion: A healthy diet, psychosocial adaptability, and regular sports are very beneficial for breast cancer prevention and progress, especially for OPRM1 hypermethylation carriers. Personalized treatment considering the correlation between OPRM1 hypermethylation and ER and PR status may provide a novel benefit for breast cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanisms underlying the association of overall and central body fatness with poorer breast cancer outcomes remain unclear; altered gene and/or protein expression of the adipokines and their receptors in breast tumors might play a role. METHODS In a sample of Black and White women with primary invasive breast cancer, we investigated associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), fat mass index (FMI), and percent body fat with protein expression (log-transformed, n = 722) and gene expression (log2-transformed, n = 148) of leptin (LEP), leptin receptor (LEPR), adiponectin (ADIPOQ), and adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 (ADIPOR1, ADIPOR2). Multivariable linear models, adjusting for race, menopausal status, and estrogen receptor status, were used to assess these associations, with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. RESULTS In multivariable models, we found that increasing BMI (β = 0.0529, 95% CI: 0.0151, 0.0906) and FMI (β = 0.0832, 95% CI: 0.0268, 0.1397) were associated with higher LEP gene expression, corresponding to 34.5% and 38.3% increases in LEP gene expression for a standard deviation (SD) increase in BMI and FMI, respectively. Increasing BMI (β = 0.0028, 95% CI: 0.0011, 0.0045), waist circumference (β = 0.0013, 95% CI: 0.0005, 0.0022), hip circumference (β = 0.0015, 95% CI: 0.0007, 0.0024), and FMI (β = 0.0041, 95% CI: 0.0015, 0.0067) were associated with higher LEPR protein expression. These associations equate to 16.8%, 17.6%, 17.7%, 17.2% increases in LEPR protein expression for a 1-SD increase in BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and FMI, respectively. Further, these associations were stronger among White and postmenopausal women and ER+ cases; formal tests of interaction yielded evidence of effect modification by race. No associations of body fatness with LEP protein expression, LEPR gene expression, or protein or gene expression of ADIPOQ, ADIPOR1, and ADIPOR2 were found. CONCLUSIONS These findings support an association of increased body fatness - beyond overall body size measured using BMI - with higher LEP gene expression and higher LEPR protein expression in breast tumor tissues. Clarifying the impact of adiposity-related adipokine and adipokine receptor expression in breast tumors on long-term breast cancer outcomes is a critical next step.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigates the rates of obesity-related cancers in patients undergoing vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), or no surgical intervention. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA Obesity has been previously associated with increased rates of cancers; however, weight loss surgeries have not been explored to demonstrate their potential risk reduction impact. METHODS Patients meeting bariatric eligibility criteria between January 2010 and December 2018 were identified. Exact 1:1:1 matching based on baseline patient demographics and comorbidities was used to create 3 groups with identical covariates: patients undergoing VSG, RYGB, and no surgery. RESULTS A total of 28, bariatric-eligible patients equally split into patients undergoing VSG (n = 9636, 33.3%), RYGB (n = 9636, 33.3%), and those with no surgical intervention (n = 9636, 33.3%). Bariatric-eligible patients that did not undergo surgical intervention had significantly higher rates and odds of developing numerous cancer types included in our study when compared to either surgical cohorts, with any cancer type (4.61%), uterine (0.86%), colorectal (0.57%), and lung cancers (0.50%) being most common. Individuals undergoing RYGB were significantly less likely to develop colorectal cancer compared to patients without any surgical intervention [odds ratio (OR) 0.47, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.30-0.75]. Additionally, those undergoing VSG were significantly less likely to develop lung cancer than the bariatric eligible no surgery cohort (OR 0.42, 95% CI 0.25-0.70). CONCLUSION Postoperative rates of any cancer type, lung, ovarian, and uterine cancer were significantly lower in obese patients undergoing either vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) or RYGB compared to bariatric-eligible patients without any surgical intervention.

Abstract
Due to the need to develop locally available, cheaper, and efficacious treatment regimens for breast cancer, the chemopreventive effect of kolaviron (KV), an extract of Garcinia kola seeds was examined. Fifty (50) female Wistar rats (120-180 g) were assigned to five groups (control group, 7, 12 dimethylbenzanthracene [DMBA] groups, tamoxifen group) of 10 rats each. They were pre-treated with KV thrice a week for four weeks except control. Estrogen receptor-α (ER-α) levels were determined in the pre-treated rats before induction of mammary carcinogenesis. After the four weeks pre-treatment period, 80 mg/kg of DMBA was used for induction. A hundred and fifty (150) days after induction, the rats were sacrificed humanely. Significantly higher levels of ER-α, formation of lobular neoplastic cells, epithelial hyperplasia, lymphocyte infiltration, increased cytokines (interleukin-6 [IL-6] and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]), CYP1A1 activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) with a corresponding decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase were observed in DMBA-induced rats. Pre-treatment with KV at 200 mg/kg body weight significantly (p < .05) decreased ER-α levels by 19.01% and 37.52%, [IL-6] by 36.37% and 20.55%, TNF-α by 42.2% and 12.33% in serum and mammary tissue respectively. Also, a significant (p < .05) decrease in serum CYP1A1 activity, MDA with concomitant increase in SOD, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were observed in serum and mammary tissue respectively. Collectively, the results suggest that KV could be further explored in targeting chemoprevention of DMBA-induced mammary damage. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Garcinia kola is widely cultivated in West and Central Africa with kolaviron (KV) as its major constituents. The seeds which have a bitter astringent taste are widely consumed by people in the region. Locals claim that consumption of the seeds provides relief for the management of several ailments including cancer. However, scientific investigations that provide a basis for these claims are still needed. This study provides evidence that points to the ameliorative potential of KV on breast cancer model. The results will be beneficial to local communities who hitherto had no knowledge on the potential of G. kola in chemoprevention. The results from this study will also attract further research attention from the international scientific community to examine the anti-cancer benefits of G. kola. This will also be beneficial to the global community due to the increasing number of breast cancer cases recorded annually.

Abstract
Breast and colorectal cancers are two primary malignancies on which most of the research done worldwide investigates the potential genetic and environmental risk factors and thereby tries to develop therapeutic methods to improve prognosis. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer type in women, while colorectal cancer is diagnosed in males as the third most and females as the second most cancer type. Though these two cancer types are predominantly seen in adult patients worldwide, in the current context, these malignancies are diagnosed at a younger age with a significant rate of incidents than previous. Such early-onset cancers are generally present at an advanced stage of the most aggressive type with a poor prognosis. In the past, the focus of the research was mainly on studying possible candidate genes to understand the onset. However, it is now recognized that genetics, epigenetics, and other environmental factors play a pivotal role in cancer susceptibility. Thus, most studies were diversified to study the behavior of host microRNAs, and the involvement of gut microbiota and good communication between them surfaced in the occurrence and state of the disease. It is understood that the impact of these factors affects the outcome of the disease. Out of the adverse outcomes identified relating to the disease, immunosuppression is one of the most concerning outcomes in the current world, where such individuals remain vulnerable to infections. Recent studies revealed that microbiome and microRNA could create a considerable impact on immunosuppression. This review focused on the behavior of host microRNAs and gut microbiome for the onset of the disease and progression, thereby influencing an individual's immunosuppression. Understanding the interactions among microRNA, microbiome, presentation of the disease, and impact on the immune system will be immensely useful for developing future therapeutic strategies based on targeting host microRNA and the patient's gut microbiome. Therapies such as inhibitory-miRNA therapies, miRNA mimic-based therapeutics, immune checkpoint blockade therapies, and bacteria-assisted tumor-targeted therapies help modulate cancer. At the same time, it paid equal attention to potential noninvasive biomarkers in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics in both cancers.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the cardiometabolic effects of a home-based lifestyle intervention (LI) in breast cancer survivors (BCSs) during the COVID-19 lockdown. In total, 30 BCSs (women; stages 0-II; non-metastatic; aged 53.5 ± 7.6 years; non-physically active; normal left ventricular systolic function) with a risk factor for recurrence underwent a 3-month LI based on nutrition and exercise. Anthropometrics, Mediterranean diet adherence, physical activity level (PAL), cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max), echocardiographic parameters, heart rate variability (average standard deviation of NN intervals (ASDNN/5 min) and 24 h very- (24 hVLF) and low-frequency (24 hLF)), and metabolic, endocrine, and inflammatory serum biomarkers (glycemia, insulin resistance, progesterone, testosterone, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)) were evaluated before (T0) and after (T1) the LI. After the LI, there were improvements in: body mass index (kg/m2: T0 = 26.0 ± 5.0, T1 = 25.5 ± 4.7; p = 0.035); diet (Mediet score: T0 = 6.9 ± 2.3, T1 = 8.8 ± 2.2; p < 0.001); PAL (MET-min/week: T0 = 647 ± 547, T1 = 1043 ± 564; p < 0.001); VO2max (mL·min-1·kg-1: T0 = 30.5 ± 5.8, T1 = 33.4 ± 6.8; p < 0.001); signs of diastolic dysfunction (participants: T0 = 15, T1 = 10; p = 0.007); AS-DNN/5 min (ms: T0 = 50.6 ± 14.4, T1 = 55.3 ± 16.7; p = 0.032); 24 hLF (ms2: T0 = 589 ± 391, T1 = 732 ± 542; p = 0.014); glycemia (mg/dL: T0 = 100.8 ± 11.4, T1 = 91.7 ± 11.0; p < 0.001); insulin resistance (HOMA-IR score: T0 = 2.07 ± 1.54, T1 = 1.53 ± 1.11; p = 0.005); testosterone (ng/mL: T0 = 0.34 ± 0.27, T1 = 0.24 ± 0.20; p = 0.003); hs-CRP (mg/L: T0 = 2.18 ± 2.14, T1 = 1.75 ± 1.74; p = 0.027). The other parameters did not change. Despite the home-confinement, LI based on exercise and nutrition improved cardiometabolic health in BCSs.

Abstract
Obesity is a risk factor for developing several cancers. The dysfunctional metabolism and chronic activation of inflammatory pathways in obesity create a milieu that supports tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. Obesity-associated metabolic, endocrine, and inflammatory mediators, besides interacting with cells leading to a malignant transformation, also modify the intrinsic metabolic and functional characteristics of immune myeloid cells. Here, the evidence supporting the hypothesis that obesity metabolically primes and promotes the expansion of myeloid cells with immunosuppressive and pro-oncogenic properties is discussed. In consequence, the accumulation of these cells, such as myeloid-derived suppressor cells and some subtypes of adipose-tissue macrophages, creates a microenvironment conducive to tumor development. In this review, the role of lipids, insulin, and leptin, which are dysregulated in obesity, is emphasized, as well as dietary nutrients in metabolic reprogramming of these myeloid cells. Moreover, emerging evidence indicating that obesity enhances immunotherapy response and hypothesized mechanisms are summarized. Priorities in deeper exploration involving the mechanisms of cross talk between metabolic disorders and myeloid cells related to cancer risk in patients with obesity are highlighted.

Abstract
ApoB-lipoproteins and their components modulate intracellular metabolism and have been associated with the development of neoplastic phenomena, such as proliferation, anchorage-independent growth, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and cancer invasion. In cancer cells, the modulation of targets that regulate cholesterol metabolism, such as synthesis de novo, endocytosis, and oxidation, are contributing factors to cancer development. While mechanisms associated with sterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP-2)/mevalonate, the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) and liver X receptor (LXR) have been linked with tumor growth; metabolites derived from cholesterol-oxidation, such as oxysterols and epoxy-cholesterols, also have been described as tumor processes-inducers. From this notion, we perform an analysis of the role of lipoproteins, their association with intracellular cholesterol metabolism, and the impact of these conditions on breast cancer development, mechanisms that can be shared during atherogenesis promoted mainly by LDL. Pathways connecting plasma dyslipidemias in conjunction with the effect of cholesterol-derived metabolites on intracellular mechanisms and cellular plasticity phenomena could provide new approaches to elucidate the triggering factors of carcinogenesis, conditions that could be considered in the development of new therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Cells are continually exposed to endogenous reactive oxygen, nitrogen, and halogen species, causing damage to biomolecules. Among them, peroxynitrite and hypochlorous acid are not only oxidants but also biological nitrating and chlorinating agents, leading to the formation of 3-nitrotyrosine and 3-chlorotyrosine, respectively, in proteins. 3-Nitrotyrosine has been detected in vivo under several pathophysiological conditions, including breast cancer. Studies show that the concentrations of 3-nitrotyrosine in plasma proteins and platelets were significantly elevated in breast cancer patients. Compared to blood serum albumin, hemoglobin adducts represent biomonitoring of exposure with a longer lifetime. In this study, human hemoglobin was freshly isolated from blood and digested into peptides with trypsin, and the levels of protein adducts, including nitration, nitrosylation, and chlorination of tyrosine as well as oxidation of methionine residues, were simultaneously quantified by nanoflow liquid chromatography nanoelectrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (nanoLC-NSI/MS/MS) with selected reaction monitoring. The results demonstrated that the relative extents of nitration at α-Tyr-42 and β-Tyr-130, nitrosylation at α-Tyr-24, and chlorination at α-Tyr-24 and β-Tyr-130 are significantly higher in globin of 25 breast cancer patients compared to those in 25 healthy subjects (p < 0.05). In particular, nitration at α-Tyr-42 and chlorination at α-Tyr-24 showed the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of >0.8. While the age of the subjects is correlated with the extents of some of these adducts, the body mass index does not have an effect on any of them. Starting with 1 drop of blood, our results indicated that this highly sensitive and specific nanoLC-NSI/MS/MS is useful in investigating the role of reactive nitrogen oxide species and reactive chlorine species in the etiology of breast cancer.

Abstract
Introduction Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder that has serious complications. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is more widespread worldwide and in Egypt. Interleukin-16 is a pro-inflammatory factor that can lead to many inflammatory diseases by stimulating the secretions of cytokines. Inflammation and obesity are concomitant factors that may lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study, we tried to focus on the relation between Interleukin-16 rs11556218 polymorphism and the risk of development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients and methods 128 type 2 diabetic patients and 128 healthy individuals as control were included in this case-control study. Interleukin-16 gene polymorphism (SNP rs11556218 T/G) was genotyped using a real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results Interleukin-16 rs11556218 T/G gene polymorphism has a statistically significant association with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the co-dominant, dominant and, over dominant genetic models. The genotype TG was presented in approximately 30 % of diabetic patients vs. control (p = 0.04) and patients with TG genotype have a 1.8 times higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (OR1.87; 95 % CI = 1.04 to 3.39) and 9.5 times higher after risk-adjusted diabetes (OR9.58; 95 % CI = 1.50 to 61.25) (p = 0.031). We found an association between Interleukin-16 gene polymorphism with both body mass index and high density lipoprotein. Conclusion This study is the first one in the Middle East and Africa which found a correlation between Interleukin-16 gene polymorphism rs11556218 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Egyptians with TG genotypes have a higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
The worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity has tripled since 1975. In the United States, the percentage of adults who are obese exceeds 42.5%. Individuals with obesity often display multiple metabolic perturbations, such as insulin resistance and persistent inflammation, which can suppress the immune system. These alterations in homeostatic mechanisms underlie the clinical parameters of metabolic syndrome, an established risk factor for many cancers, including breast cancer. Within the growth-promoting, proinflammatory milieu of the obese state, crosstalk between adipocytes, immune cells and breast epithelial cells occurs via obesity-associated hormones, angiogenic factors, cytokines, and other mediators that can enhance breast cancer risk and/or progression. This review synthesizes evidence on the biological mechanisms underlying obesity-breast cancer links, with emphasis on emerging mechanism-based interventions in the context of nutrition, using modifiable elements of diet alone or paired with physical activity, to reduce the burden of obesity on breast cancer.

Abstract
Background: Women's health has received renewed attention in the last few years including health rehabilitation options for women affected by breast cancer. Dancing has often been regarded as one attractive option for supporting women's well-being and health, but research with women recovering from breast cancer is still in its infancy. Dancing with Health is multi-site pilot study that aimed to evaluate a dance programme for women in recovery from breast cancer across five European countries. Methods: A standardized 32 h dance protocol introduced a range of Latin American dances presented within a sports and exercise framework with influences from dance movement therapy. Fifty-four women (M age 53.51; SD 7.99) participated in the study who had a breast cancer diagnosis <3 years, chemotherapy >6 weeks, no indication of metastasis, or scheduled surgery/chemotherapy/radiation treatment for the duration of the intervention. Primary outcome data was collected for anthropometric and fitness measures next to cancer-related quality of life. T-tests and Wilcoxon signed ranked tests were used to establish differences pre and post intervention. Cohen's d was also calculated to determine the effect size of the intervention. Results: Statistically significant changes were found for: (i) weight, right and left forearm circumference and hip; (ii) 6 min walking, right and left handgrip, sit-to-stand and sit-and-reach; (iii) the EORTC-QLQ C30 summary score as well as the subscales of emotional and social functioning and symptoms. In all cases the direction of change was positive, while Cohen's d calculated showed that the effect of the intervention for these parameters ranged from intermediate to large. Conclusion: Changes on the above anthropometric, fitness and quality of life measures suggest that the intervention was of value to the participating women recovering from breast cancer. Results also advocate collaborative efforts across countries to further research.
