Abstract
Pathogenic microbial contamination (bacteria and fungi) in food products during production poses a significant global health risk, leading to food waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and aesthetic and financial losses. Bacteria and fungi, by forming solid biofilms, enhance their resistance to antimicrobial agents, thereby increasing the potential for cross-contamination of food products. Curcumin molecule-mediated photodynamic inactivation (Cur-m-PDI) technology has shown promising results in sterilizing microbial contaminants and their biofilms, significantly contributing to food preservation without compromising quality. Photosensitizers (curcumin) absorb light, leading to a chemical reaction with oxygen and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) that effectively reduce bacteria, fungi, and biofilms. The mechanism of microorganism inhibition is caused by exposure to ROS generated via the type 1 pathway involving electron transfer (such as O2•-, H2O2, -OH•, and other radicals), the type 2 pathway involving energy transfer (such as 1O2), secondary ROS, and weakening of antioxidant enzymes. The effectiveness of the inactivation of microorganisms is influenced by the concentration of curcumin, light (source type and energy density), oxygen availability, and duration of exposure. This article reviews the mechanism of reducing microbial food contamination and inhibiting their biofilms through Cur-m-PDI. It also highlights future directions, challenges, and considerations related to the effects of ROS in oxidizing food, the toxicity of PDI to living cells and tissues, conditions/types of food products, and the stability and degradation of curcumin.

Abstract
Treating sunburn and other UV-induced skin damage issues remains a significant challenge in the field of dermatology. In this study, we synthesized a highly bioactive recombinant type III collagen (rCol III) to accelerate the healing of UV-damaged skin. The high-purity rCol III demonstrated excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity, significantly promoting the adhesion, proliferation, and migration of HFF-1 cells. In a mouse UV-damage model, Combo evaluations demonstrated that rCol III contributed to restore transepidermal water loss (TEWL) values of UV-damaged skin to normal levels. Histological analysis further confirmed that rCol III substantially accelerated skin repair by enhancing collagen regeneration. Additionally, rCol III facilitated the regeneration of zebrafish tail fin tissue and alleviated shrinkage caused by excessive UV exposure. The biocompatible and bioactive rCol III offers a novel strategy for treating UV-induced skin damage, holding immense potential for applications in skin tissue engineering.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Agricultural workers are at risk of developing skin cancer due to prolonged exposure to the sun during their daily work. This study was conducted to determine sun protection knowledge and behaviours of agricultural workers in Turkey. METHODS The cross-sectional study was conducted with 460 participants working in agriculture. The data were collected using a sociodemographic form, Skin Cancer and Sun Knowledge Scale and Sun Protection Behaviour Scale. The data were analysed using One Way ANOVA and Independent Samples t Test. RESULTS Participants mean total score on the Skin Cancer and Sun Knowledge Scale was 15.24 ± 2.47 (max-min 0-25) and the mean total score on the Sun Protection Behaviour Scale was 24.10 ± 4.46 (max-min 8-40). Statistically significant disparities were observed between the SCBS, SPBS and their sub-divisions along with the working period, age, marital status, gender, level of education, income status, skin type and agricultural working status of the participants (p < .05). CONCLUSION The study found that people working in the agriculture had inadequate sun protection behaviours and knowledge. Based on the study's results, it is proposed to create intervention programmes that specifically target single, male, middle-aged or older individuals with extended working hours and low levels of education and income.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluates the feasibility and impact of conveying personalized sun protection message supported by a UV photograph of the face in Switzerland. Methods 440 adults from 14 private and public sites associated with high sun exposure received a skin cancer prevention intervention composed of a facial UV-filtered photograph and individual counselling by a trained registered nurse. Pre-/post intervention surveys assessed sun protection of participants, their skin cancer risk and reasons for behavioural change. Results The range of facial UV spots' count per individual was very broad (0-590) and mainly determined by phototype, followed by age. Three months after the intervention, 61% of participants positively changed their sun protection habit both during leisure and at work. Use of all sun protection means increased. No factor could be specifically associated to that propension for change. The individualized message was perceived as the main motivation for change. Conclusion Personalized sun protection messages supported by a facial UV photograph led to significant favourable behavioural change in a highly sun-exposed population of adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE The increasing amounts of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) light in our surroundings have sparked worries about the possible effects on humans and plants. The detrimental effects of heightened UV-B exposure on these two vital elements of terrestrial life are different due to their unique and concurrent nature. Understanding common vulnerabilities and distinctive adaptations of UV-B radiation by exploring the physiological and biochemical responses of plants and the effects on human health is of huge importance. The comparative effects of UV-B radiation on plants and animals, however, are poorly studied. This review sheds light on the sophisticated web of UV-B radiation effects by navigating the complex interaction between botanical and medical perspectives, drawing upon current findings. CONCLUSION By providing a comprehensive understanding of the complex effects of heightened UV-B radiation on plants and humans, this study summarizes relevant adaptation strategies to the heightened UV-B radiation stress, which offer new approaches for improving human cellular resilience to environmental stressors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Preventing the onset of skin malignancies is feasible by reducing exposure to ultraviolet radiation. We reviewed published economic evaluations of primary prevention initiatives in the past decade, to support investment decisions for skin cancer prevention. METHODS We assessed cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and benefit-cost analyses published from 1 September 2013. Seven databases were searched on 18 July 2023 and updated on 15 November 2023. Studies must have reported outcomes in terms of monetary costs, life years, quality-adjusted life years or variant thereof. A narrative synthesis was undertaken and reporting quality was assessed by three reviewers using the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards checklist. RESULTS In total, 12 studies were included with five studies located in Australia; three in North America and the remaining four in Europe. Interventions included restricting the use of indoor tanning devices (7 studies), television advertising, multi-component sun safety campaigns, shade structures plus protective clothing provision for outdoor workers and provision of melanoma genomic risk information to individuals. Most studies constructed Markov cohort models and adopted a societal cost perspective. Overall, the reporting quality of the studies was high. Studies found highly favourable returns on investment ranging from US$0.35 for every $1 spent on prevention, up to €3.60 for every €1 spent. Other studies showed substantial skin cancers avoided, gains in life years, quality-adjusted survival, and societal cost savings. CONCLUSIONS From both population health and economic perspectives, allocating limited health care resources to primary prevention of skin cancer is highly favourable.

Abstract
UVR is a skin carcinogen, yet no studies link sun exposure to increased all-cause mortality. Epidemiological studies from the United Kingdom and Sweden link sun exposure with reduced all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. Vitamin D synthesis is dependent on UVB exposure. Individuals with higher serum levels of vitamin D are healthier in many ways, yet multiple trials of oral vitamin D supplementation show little benefit. Growing evidence shows that sunlight has health benefits through vitamin D-independent pathways, such as photomobilization of nitric oxide from cutaneous stores with reduction in cardiovascular morbidity. Sunlight has important systemic health benefit as well as risks.

Abstract
Spaceflight poses a myriad of environmental stressors to astronauts´ physiology including microgravity and radiation. The individual impacts of microgravity and radiation on the immune system have been extensively investigated, though a comprehensive review on their combined effects on immune system outcomes is missing. Therefore, this review aims at understanding the synergistic, additive, and antagonistic interactions between microgravity and radiation and their impact on immune function as observed during spaceflight-analog studies such as rodent hindlimb unloading and cell culture rotating wall vessel models. These mimic some, but not all, of the physiological changes observed in astronauts during spaceflight and provide valuable information that should be considered when planning future missions. We provide guidelines for the design of further spaceflight-analog studies, incorporating influential factors such as age and sex for rodent models and standardizing the longitudinal evaluation of specific immunological alterations for both rodent and cellular models of spaceflight exposure.

Abstract
ISSUE ADDRESSED While the links between sun exposure and skin cancer are well known, the benefits of sun exposure, particularly as a source of vitamin D, are less well known. This paper reports on a deliberative study exploring public perspectives about sun exposure harms and benefits. METHODS Two citizens' juries were conducted in Brisbane and Adelaide to consider questions about sun exposure, vitamin D and health promotion. Members of the general population (jurors) listened to evidence from expert witnesses about the harms and benefits of sun exposure. Most witness sessions extended for 60 min, with 6 sessions over 2 days. At each citizens' jury, jurors were asked to listen to expert testimony, consider the evidence and make policy recommendations. The planning and design of the citizens' juries were informed by well-established citizens' jury methods. RESULTS Jurors proposed that Australia needs improved public information about the harms and benefits of sun exposure. They argued for information that supports personal decision-making that accounts for differences in skin tone and geographical region. Jurors agreed that Australia needs an updated sun safety campaign that reflects new research and addresses diversity. A one-size-fits-all approach to sun protection may no longer be appropriate. CONCLUSIONS While a new campaign should address both harms and benefits, jurors felt the need for skin cancer prevention outweighs the desirability of generating vitamin D through sun exposure. More nuanced public health messages are needed, which balance the need for skin protection and vitamin D, and acknowledge the diversity of Australia's population. SO WHAT?: Previous research studies are typically siloed into the separate areas of vitamin D or skin cancer research. This study incorporated both topics and pooled the views of participants in two citizens' juries who agreed on the need for improved information about the harms and benefits of sun exposure to reflect a modern Australian population.

Abstract
The protection of Earth's stratospheric ozone (O3) is an ongoing process under the auspices of the universally ratified Montreal Protocol and its Amendments and adjustments. A critical part of this process is the assessment of the environmental issues related to changes in O3. The United Nations Environment Programme's Environmental Effects Assessment Panel provides annual scientific evaluations of some of the key issues arising in the recent collective knowledge base. This current update includes a comprehensive assessment of the incidence rates of skin cancer, cataract and other skin and eye diseases observed worldwide; the effects of UV radiation on tropospheric oxidants, and air and water quality; trends in breakdown products of fluorinated chemicals and recent information of their toxicity; and recent technological innovations of building materials for greater resistance to UV radiation. These issues span a wide range of topics, including both harmful and beneficial effects of exposure to UV radiation, and complex interactions with climate change. While the Montreal Protocol has succeeded in preventing large reductions in stratospheric O3, future changes may occur due to a number of natural and anthropogenic factors. Thus, frequent assessments of potential environmental impacts are essential to ensure that policies remain based on the best available scientific knowledge.

Abstract
Background and objective Exposure to sunlight's ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses various health risks, including sunburn, skin damage, and heightened skin cancer risk. Sunblock usage has surged due to widespread advertising campaigns. Individuals spending time outdoors should employ protective measures like wearing hats, applying sunblock with a high sun protection factor (SPF), covering exposed skin, and seeking shade to mitigate UV exposure's harmful effects. This study's objective is to assess participants' experiences and satisfaction with SPF 100 sunscreen in actual use conditions. Methodology This study employed a prospective, single-center design involving 100 participants aged 18 to 70 years. Eligible individuals had Fitzpatrick skin types I-III and were engaged in outdoor activities, excluding those with certain medical conditions or medication use. Each participant received sunscreen tubes (Solero SPF 100, Helix Pharma Pvt. Ltd., Karachi, Pakistan), and clinical evaluations were conducted on the day before and after and day 22 visits, with sunblock application and UV-induced erythema assessments performed. Results Our study enrolled participants with a mean age of 25.6 ± 7.1 years, ranging from 15 to 55 years, with females comprising 84% (84) of the sample. Results revealed widespread satisfaction and acceptance of SPF 100 sunscreen, without any reported adverse reactions. A significant majority expressed their willingness to purchase and recommend the sunscreen to others. Furthermore, the majority of healthcare providers expressed satisfaction with prescribing this sunscreen. Conclusions In conclusion, SPF 100 sunscreen demonstrated excellent tolerability and acceptability among participants, suggesting its potential utility in both personal sun protection routines and clinical settings.

Abstract
Melanoma ranks as the fifth most common solid cancer in adults worldwide and is responsible for a significant proportion of skin-tumor-related deaths. The advent of immune checkpoint inhibition with anti-programmed death protein-1 (PD-1) antibodies has revolutionized the adjuvant treatment of high-risk, completely resected stage III/IV melanoma. However, not all patients benefit equally. Current strategies for improving outcomes involve adjuvant treatment in earlier disease stages (IIB/C) as well as perioperative treatment approaches. Interfering with T-cell exhaustion to counteract cancer immune evasion and the immunogenic nature of melanoma is key for anti-PD-1 effectiveness. Yet, the biological rationale for the efficacy of adjuvant treatment in clinically tumor-free patients remains to be fully elucidated. High-dose intermittent sun exposure (sunburn) is a well-known primary risk factor for melanomagenesis. Also, ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced immunosuppression may impair anti-cancer immune surveillance. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge about adjuvant anti-PD-1 blockade, including a characterization of the main cell types most likely responsible for its efficacy. In conclusion, we propose that local and systemic immunosuppression, to some extent UVR-mediated, can be restored by adjuvant anti-PD-1 therapy, consequently boosting anti-melanoma immune surveillance and the elimination of residual melanoma cell clones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and melanoma have different associations with sun exposure. OBJECTIVES To compare trends in the incidence rates of cSCC and melanoma, to provide insight into changing patterns of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). METHODS We compared trends in the incidence of cSCC and melanoma in seven susceptible populations residing at mid-to-high latitudes: Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, the Netherlands and Tasmania (Australia). We fitted Joinpoint models to describe trends in age-standardized incidence rates for melanoma and cSCC and calculated the average annual percentage rate of change for the period 1989-2020 (1989-2018 for Tasmania). We calculated the incident rate ratio (IRR) as the ratio of the age-standardized rates (European Standard Population) for cSCC to melanoma and conducted age-period-cohort modelling to compare age, period and cohort effects. RESULTS The ratio of cSCC-to-melanoma incidence increased with proximity to the equator and over time. In the most recent time period, the incidence of cSCC was higher than the incidence of melanoma for men and women in all seven populations. While the ratio of cSCC-to-melanoma incidence was higher for men vs. women, in most countries the cSCC-to-melanoma IRR increased over time to a greater extent in women than in men. Melanoma incidence was higher among younger people and cSCC incidence was higher among older people; the age at which the incidence of cSCC overtook the incidence of melanoma was progressively younger with proximity to the equator. CONCLUSIONS Despite concerted international efforts to preserve the ozone layer over the past four decades resulting in significant reductions in surface ultraviolet B at mid-latitudes, the incidence of skin cancer, particularly cSCC, continues to rise in those regions. Our findings are consistent with a stronger association with age-associated cumulative sun exposure for cSCC vs. melanoma and suggest that women are currently receiving greater UV radiation exposure than in the past.

Abstract
Collagen I is a major component of extracellular matrix in human skin, and is also widely used in a variety of skin-care products. In this study, we investigated the modulatory roles of collagen I on human immortalized keratinocytes HaCaT, especially when cells were irradiated with UVB. Interestingly, the cells grown on plates coated by molecular collagen I, but not fibrillar collagen I, acquired certain resistance against UVB damages, as shown by increased survival and reduced apoptosis. The accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria in UVB-treated cells was attenuated by molecular collagen I-coating. Interestingly, molecular collagen I rescued the loss of mitochondrial biogenesis in cells treated with UVB. Loss of PINK1/parkin-mediated mitophagy was dominant for the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria after UVB irradiation. Of note, cells cultured on molecular collagen I-precoated plates exhibited reserved mitophagy after UVB irradiation, as reflected by the enhanced protein level of PINK1/parkin, increased mitochondrial ubiquitin and the co-localization of lysosomes and mitochondria. Moreover, in UVB-treated cells, inhibiting mitophagy by Cyclosporin A, or by silencing PINK1 or parkin, disturbed the resolution of mitochondrial stress and reduced the protective effect of molecular collagen I, indicating that mitophagy is pivotal for the protection of collagen I against UVB damage in keratinocytes HaCaT. Collectively, this study reveals an unexpected protective role of collagen I, which facilitates mitophagy to rescue cells under UVB irradiation, providing a new direction for clinical application of collagen products.

Abstract
The ultraviolet (UV) component of sunlight can damage DNA. Although most solar UV is absorbed by the ozone layer, wavelengths > 300 nm (UVA and UVB bands) can reach the Earth's surface. It is essential to understand the genotoxic effects of UV light, particularly in natural environments. Caulobacter crescentus, a bacterium widely employed as a model for cell cycle studies, was selected for this study. Strains proficient and deficient in DNA repair (uvrA-) were used to concurrently investigate three genotoxic endpoints: cytotoxicity, SOS induction, and gene mutation, using colony-formation, the SOS chromotest, and RifR mutagenesis, respectively. Our findings underscore the distinct impacts of individual UV bands and the full spectrum of sunlight itself in C. crescentus. UVC light was highly genotoxic, especially for the repair-deficient strain. A UVB dose equivalent to 20 min sunlight exposure also affected the cells. UVA exposure caused a significant response only at high doses, likely due to activation of photorepair. Exposure to solar irradiation resulted in reduced levels of SOS induction, possibly due to decreased cell survival. However, mutagenicity is increased, particularly in uvrA- deficient cells.

Abstract
The spatial and temporal dynamics of daily ultraviolet index (UVI) for a period of 18 years (2004-2022) over the Indian state of Kerala were statistically characterised in the study. The UVI measurements used for the study were derived from the ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiance measured by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) of the AURA satellite and classified into different severity levels for analysis. Basic statistics of daily, monthly and seasonal UVI as well as Mann-Kendall (MK) statistical trend characteristics and the rate of change of daily UVI using Theil-Sen's slope test were also evaluated. A higher variability of UVI characteristics was observed in the Kerala region, and more than 79% of the measurements fell into the categories of very high and extreme UVI values, which suggests the need of implementation of appropriate measures to reduce health risks. Although the UVI measured during the study period shows a slight decrease, most of the data show a seasonal variation with undulating low and peak values. Higher UVI are observed during the months of March, April and September. The region also has higher UVI during the southwest monsoon (SWM) and summer seasons. Although Kerala region as a single whole unit, UVI show a non-significant decreasing trend (-0.83), the MK test revealed the increasing and decreasing trends of UVI ranging from -1.96 to 0.41 facilitated the delineation of areas (domains) where UVI are increasing or decreasing. The domain of UVI increase occupies the central and southern (S) parts, and the domains of decrease cover the northern (N) and S parts of the Kerala region. The rate of change of daily UVI in domain of increase and decrease shows an average rate of 0.34 × 10-5 day-1 and -2 × 10-5 day-1, respectively. The parameters (rainfall, air temperature, cloud optical depth (COD) and solar zenith angle (SZA)) that affect the strength of UV rays reaching the surface indicate that a cloud-free atmosphere or low thickness clouds prevails in the Kerala region. Overall, the study results indicate the need for regular monitoring of UVI in the study area and also suggest appropriate campaigns to disseminate information and precautions for prolonged UVI exposure to reduce the adverse health effects, since the study area has a high population density.

Abstract
Carcinoma is a condition that continues to pose a significant challenge, despite current medical advances. Skin carcinoma is the leading cause of cancer, and it has seen a massive increase all over the world. The challenges with current treatment are due to toxicity that leads to many more skin complications. Due to this to avoid such complications by designing diverse nanoparticles as delivery carriers, nanomedicine is employed as a hub for diagnostics and therapy. Liposomes, gold nanoparticles, transferases, nanofibers, etc., can all be used as delivery nanocarriers. These nanoparticles' structures and characteristics protect the medicine from degradation and improve its stability. Surface modifying agents and procedures are employed to functionalize nanoparticles, resulting in smart delivery systems. The application of nanotechnology-based approaches systematically increases drug delivery to target cells. Skin cancer has several challenges, including a long time to diagnose early types of cancer and a slower growth rate. This review focuses on innovative skin cancer therapy techniques, focusing on nanotechnology and the challenges associated with current treatment of skin cancer.

Abstract
We previously examined the cellular uptake of six types of vitamin D in human intestinal Caco-2 cells. Since vitamins D5-D7 were commercially unavailable, we synthesized these compounds organically before studying them. This process led us to understand that new secosteroids could be generated as vitamin D candidates, depending on the sterol used as the starting material. We obtained two new secosteroids-compounds 3 and 4-from fucosterol in the current study. We investigated the intestinal absorption of these compounds using Caco-2 cells cultured in Transwells and compared the results with vitamin D3, a representative secosteroid. The intestinal absorption of compound 4 was comparable to that of vitamin D3. Compound 3 showed similar uptake levels but transported about half as much as vitamin D3. These compounds demonstrated intestinal absorption at the cellular level. Vitamin D is known for its diverse biological activities manifest after intestinal absorption. Using PASS online simulation, we estimated the biological activity of compound 3's activated form. In several items indicated by PASS, compound 3 exhibited stronger biological activity than vitamins D2-D7 and was also predicted to have unique biological activities.

Abstract
The adverse effects of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on normal skin are well established, especially in those with poorly melanized skin. Clinically, these effects may be classified as acute, such as erythema or chronic such as keratinocyte and melanocyte skin cancers. Apart from skin type genetics, clinical responses to solar UVR are dependent on geophysical (e.g., solar intensity) and behavioural factors. The latter are especially important because they may result in 'solar overload' with unwanted clinical consequences and ever greater burdens to healthcare systems. Correctly used, sunscreens can mitigate the acute and chronic effects of solar UVR exposure. Laboratory studies also show that sunscreens can inhibit the initial molecular and cellular events that are responsible for clinical outcomes. Despite public health campaigns, global trends continue to show increasing incidence of all types of skin cancer. Large-scale epidemiological studies have shown the benefits of sunscreen use in preventing skin cancer, though it is likely that sunscreen use has not been optimal in such studies. It is evident that without substantial changes in sun-seeking behaviour, sunscreen use is a very important part of the defence against the acute and chronic effects of solar exposure. Ideally, sunscreens should be able to provide the level of protection that reduces the risk of skin cancer in susceptible skin types to that observed in heavily melanized skin.

Abstract
Skin cancer continues to increase in incidence year-on-year and represents the most common form of cancer across the globe. Every human undergoes premature ageing, particularly on the face, neck and hands. Both phenomena are driven primarily by chronic, daily exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). While sunscreen products play a primary role in the prevention of UVR skin damage, the active ingredients, i.e., UVR filters, are facing unprecedented challenges in the coming 10 years and their future is by no means certain. This article, therefore, reviews afresh the facts around photoprotection and the role of sunscreen products in the prevention of acute (sunburn) and chronic (cancer, photoageing) skin damage and compares/contrasts these with various emerging questions and opinions around UVR filter technology. We present a passionate defence of this remarkable technology, but also attempt to imagine a world without it.

Abstract
The management of the thermal environment to which dogs are exposed should be included in strategies to improve their welfare. An online questionnaire was administered to 624 owners of Siberian Husky dogs residing in Brazil, with the objective of assessing their perceptions regarding their dogs' capacity to adapt to heat, and its association with the owners' routine care. Owners who believed that dogs are low-heat-tolerant animals were more likely to report heat response behaviors from their dogs. Overall, owners reported walk with their dogs during early morning, late afternoon and nighttime. They also reported solar radiation as the primary criteria for determining the time to walk with their dogs. However, owners who reported walking with their dogs at noon mentioned time availability as their primary criteria. In conclusion, owners perceive Siberian Husky dogs living in Brazil as being poorly adapted to heat, and this perception appeared to influence their positive attitudes towards protecting their dogs from heat stress by choosing to walk them during times with less solar exposure. However, the lack of time for owners to walk with their dogs during cooler periods can still be a risk factor in exposing the animals to extreme hot conditions.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in the United States. The previous literature demonstrates the importance of vitamin D for overall health, and a significant body of literature has examined the benefits of optimal serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] on cardiovascular health, but the results remain inconclusive. The objective of this study was to determine the association between reported CVD and [25(OH)D]. We utilized the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and included adults aged 20 years and older (n = 9825). CVD was defined as having a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or coronary heart disease. Vitamin D status was categorized as a serum 25(OH)D deficiency at <30 nmol/L; insufficiency at 30 to 49.9 nmol/L; normal/optimal at 50 to 125 nmol/L; and adequacy at >125 nmol/L. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square tests, t-tests were conducted to investigate the differences in participant characteristics among those with CVD and without CVD, and regression models were used to explore the association between vitamin D levels and CVD status. We found 25(OH)D deficiency associated with CVD (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 1.48; 95% CI = 1.11-1.98; p < 0.05). [25(OH)D] insufficiency was also associated with CVD (AOR = 1.28; 95% CI = 1.06-1.54; p < 0.05). The 25(OH)D adequacy was not associated with reported CVD. For the prevention of CVD, healthcare professionals may recommend the use of vitamin D supplementation to improve cardiovascular health in adults while considering individual needs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stillbirth has been associated with low plasma vitamin D. Both Sweden and Finland have a high proportion of low plasma vitamin D levels (< 50 nmol/L). We aimed to assess the odds of stillbirth in relation to changes in national vitamin D fortification. METHODS We surveyed all pregnancies in Finland between 1994 and 2021 (n = 1,569,739) and Sweden (n = 2,800,730) with live or stillbirth registered in the Medical Birth Registries. The mean incidences before and after changes in the vitamin D food fortification programs in Finland (2003 and 2009) and Sweden (2018) were compared with cross-tabulation with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS In Finland, the stillbirth rate declined from ~ 4.1/1000 prior to 2003, to 3.4/1000 between 2004 and 2009 (odds ratio [OR] 0.87, 95% CI 0.81-0.93), and to 2.8/1000 after 2010 (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.78-0.91). In Sweden, the stillbirth rate decreased from 3.9/1000 between 2008 and 2017 to 3.2/1000 after 2018 (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.78-0.89). When the level of the dose-dependent difference in Finland in a large sample with correct temporal associations decreased, it remained steady in Sweden, and vice versa, indicating that the effect may be due to vitamin D. These are observational findings that may not be causal. CONCLUSION Each increment of vitamin D fortification was associated with a 15% drop in stillbirths on a national level. If true, and if fortification reaches the entire population, it may represent a milestone in preventing stillbirths and reducing health inequalities.

Abstract
This assessment provides a comprehensive update of the effects of changes in stratospheric ozone and other factors (aerosols, surface reflectivity, solar activity, and climate) on the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation at the Earth's surface. The assessment is performed in the context of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its Amendments and Adjustments. Changes in UV radiation at low- and mid-latitudes (0-60°) during the last 25 years have generally been small (e.g., typically less than 4% per decade, increasing at some sites and decreasing at others) and were mostly driven by changes in cloud cover and atmospheric aerosol content, caused partly by climate change and partly by measures to control tropospheric pollution. Without the Montreal Protocol, erythemal (sunburning) UV irradiance at northern and southern latitudes of less than 50° would have increased by 10-20% between 1996 and 2020. For southern latitudes exceeding 50°, the UV Index (UVI) would have surged by between 25% (year-round at the southern tip of South America) and more than 100% (South Pole in spring). Variability of erythemal irradiance in Antarctica was very large during the last four years. In spring 2019, erythemal UV radiation was at the minimum of the historical (1991-2018) range at the South Pole, while near record-high values were observed in spring 2020, which were up to 80% above the historical mean. In the Arctic, some of the highest erythemal irradiances on record were measured in March and April 2020. For example in March 2020, the monthly average UVI over a site in the Canadian Arctic was up to 70% higher than the historical (2005-2019) average, often exceeding this mean by three standard deviations. Under the presumption that all countries will adhere to the Montreal Protocol in the future and that atmospheric aerosol concentrations remain constant, erythemal irradiance at mid-latitudes (30-60°) is projected to decrease between 2015 and 2090 by 2-5% in the north and by 4-6% in the south due to recovering ozone. Changes projected for the tropics are ≤ 3%. However, in industrial regions that are currently affected by air pollution, UV radiation will increase as measures to reduce air pollutants will gradually restore UV radiation intensities to those of a cleaner atmosphere. Since most substances controlled by the Montreal Protocol are also greenhouse gases, the phase-out of these substances may have avoided warming by 0.5-1.0 °C over mid-latitude regions of the continents, and by more than 1.0 °C in the Arctic; however, the uncertainty of these calculations is large. We also assess the effects of changes in stratospheric ozone on climate, focusing on the poleward shift of climate zones, and discuss the role of the small Antarctic ozone hole in 2019 on the devastating "Black Summer" fires in Australia. Additional topics include the assessment of advances in measuring and modeling of UV radiation; methods for determining personal UV exposure; the effect of solar radiation management (stratospheric aerosol injections) on UV radiation relevant for plants; and possible revisions to the vitamin D action spectrum, which describes the wavelength dependence of the synthesis of previtamin D3 in human skin upon exposure to UV radiation.
