Abstract
Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by a functional decline in muscle. The prevalence of sarcopenia increases with natural aging, becoming a serious health problem among elderly individuals. Therefore, understanding the pathology of sarcopenia is critical for inhibiting age-related alterations and promoting health and longevity in elderly individuals. The development of sarcopenia may be influenced by interactions between visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, particularly under conditions of chronic low-grade inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. This hypothesis is supported by the following observations: (i) accumulation of senescent cells in both adipose tissue and skeletal muscle with age; (ii) gut dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalance in gut microbial communities as the main trigger for inflammation, sarcopenia, and aged adipose tissue; and (iii) microbial dysbiosis, which could impact the onset or progression of a senescent state. Moreover, adipose tissue acts as an endocrine organ, releasing molecules that participate in intricate communication networks between organs. Our discussion focuses on novel adipokines and their role in regulating adipose tissue and muscle, particularly those influenced by aging and obesity, emphasizing their contributions to disease development. On the basis of these findings, we propose that age-related adipose tissue and sarcopenia are disorders characterized by chronic inflammation and metabolic dysregulation. Finally, we explore new potential therapeutic strategies involving specialized proresolving mediator (SPM) G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) agonists, non-SPM GPCR agonists, transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, antidiabetic drugs in conjunction with probiotics and prebiotics, and compounds designed to target senescent cells and mitigate their pro-inflammatory activity.

Abstract
Chemerin and resistin are adipokines studied as potential markers for early diagnosis and disease severity in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations serum and synovial levels of chemerin and resistin with inflammatory parameters and ultrasonographic scores (US) in KOA individuals. Serum was collected from 28 patients with KOA and synovial fluid was obtained from 16 of them. Another 31 age and sex matched cases with no joint disease were included as healthy controls. Concentrations of chemerin, resistin, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) were determined with ELISA. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein, serum uric acid (UA) were measured in the patients group. Participants with KOA underwent US assessment using the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) scores. Patients with KOA had statistically significant higher level of serum resistin than healthy controls [11.05 (3.78-24.13) ng/mL and 7.23 (3.83-12.19) respectively, p < 0.001]. A strong correlation was found between serum chemerin and ESR (r = 0.434, p = 0.021), uric acid (r = 0.573, p = 0.001) as well as the US (r=-0.872, p < 0.001). Serum resistin demonstrated significant association with TNF-alpha (r = 0.398, p = 0.044). In conclusion, both chemerin and resistin might contribute to inflammatory changes associated with KOA. Further studies are needed to elucidate their potential role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a leading cause of death and disability with poor long-term outcomes. Creating a predictive score for long-term mortality in AIS might be important for optimizing treatment strategies. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a predictive score for three-year mortality in patients with AIS using several demographic, clinical, laboratory and imaging parameters. Materials and Methods: This study included 244 AIS patients admitted to a tertiary center and followed up for three years. The patients' data included demographics, clinical features, laboratory tests (including resistin and leptin levels) and imaging parameters. The patients were randomly divided into a predictive group (n = 164) and a validation group (n = 80). Results: Advanced age, a high NIHSS score, low levels of hemoglobin, elevated resistin levels and the presence of carotid plaques were independently associated with three-year mortality. The predictive model incorporated these variables, and it was validated in a separate cohort. Leptin levels did not significantly predict mortality. Conclusions: This study developed and validated a promising predictive score for three-year mortality in patients with AIS. Advanced age, high NIHSS scores, low hemoglobin levels, elevated resistin levels and the presence of carotid plaques were the independent predictors of long-term mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin condition with several types of manifestation, including psoriatic arthritis. In recent years, studies have demonstrated multiple molecules and mechanisms that play important roles in the pathophysiology of psoriasis. Studies have been conducted to determine the role of adipokines, bioactive peptides secreted by the adipose tissue, in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. These studies have shown that adipokines are dysregulated in psoriasis and their abnormal expression profile could contribute to the inflammatory mechanisms observed in psoriasis. AREAS COVERED In this review, we discuss the immunomodulatory features of resistin, omentin-1, and vaspin, and discuss their potential involvement in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. EXPERT OPINION The adipokines resistin, omentin, and vaspin appear to be promising therapeutic targets in psoriasis. It is important to seek to block the action of resistin, either by blocking its receptors or by blocking its systemic effects with antibodies. In the case of omentin and vaspin, substances that are receptor mimetics of these adipokines should be sought and studies conducted of their analogues for the treatment of psoriasis. To introduce these therapies into clinical practice, multicentre clinical trials are required to confirm their efficacy and safety after initial studies in animal models.

Abstract
Inflammatory skin diseases are known to negatively impact patient psychology, with individuals experiencing higher rates of stress and subsequent diminished quality of life, as well as mental health issues including anxiety and depression. Moreover, increased psychological stress has been found to exacerbate existing inflammatory skin diseases. The association between inflammatory skin diseases and psychological stress is a timely topic, and a framework to better understand the relationship between the two that integrates available literature is needed. In this narrative review article, we discuss potential neurobiological mechanisms behind psychological stress due to inflammatory skin diseases, focusing mainly on proinflammatory cytokines in the circulating system (the brain-gut-skin communications) and the default mode network in the brain. We also discuss potential descending pathways from the brain that lead to aggravation of inflammatory skin diseases due to psychological stress, including the central and peripheral hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes, peripheral nerves and the skin barrier function.

Abstract
Resistin, a cytokine hormone predominantly secreted by adipose tissue, is elevated in various metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In addition to its involvement in metabolic regulation, resistin has been implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder. Numerous studies have reported increased resistin levels in psoriatic skin lesions, suggesting a possible association between resistin and psoriasis. Recent studies have suggested the potential involvement of resistin in the development and progression of certain cancers. Resistin is overexpressed in breast, colorectal, and gastric cancers. This suggests that it may play a role in the development of these cancers, possibly by inducing inflammation and cell growth. The link between resistin and cancer raises the possibility of shared underlying mechanisms driving the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Chronic inflammation, one such mechanism, is a hallmark of psoriasis and cancer. Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between resistin and psoriasis. Identifying potential therapeutic targets is crucial for effective management of psoriasis. By doing so, we may be able to develop more effective treatment options for individuals living with psoriasis and ultimately improve their quality of life. Ultimately, a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the impact of resistin on psoriasis is essential for advancing our knowledge and finding new ways to treat and manage this challenging condition.

Abstract
The advanced glycosylation end-product receptor (AGER) is involved in the development of metabolic inflammation and related complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Tissue expression of the AGER gene (AGER) is regulated by epigenetic mediators, including a long non-coding RNA AGER-1 (lncAGER-1). This study aimed to investigate whether human obesity and T2DM are associated with an altered expression of AGER and lncAGER-1 in adipose tissue and, if so, whether these changes affect the local inflammatory milieu. The expression of genes encoding AGER, selected adipokines, and lncAGER-1 was assessed using real-time PCR in visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue. VAT and SAT samples were obtained from 62 obese (BMI > 40 kg/m2; N = 24 diabetic) and 20 normal weight (BMI = 20-24.9 kg/m2) women, while a further 15 SAT samples were obtained from patients who were 18 to 24 months post-bariatric surgery. Tissue concentrations of adipokines were measured at the protein level using an ELISA-based method. Obesity was associated with increased AGER mRNA levels in SAT compared to normal weight status (p = 0.04) and surgical weight loss led to their significant decrease compared to pre-surgery levels (p = 0.01). Stratification by diabetic status revealed that AGER mRNA levels in VAT were higher in diabetic compared to non-diabetic women (p = 0.018). Elevated AGER mRNA levels in VAT of obese diabetic patients correlated with lncAGER-1 (p = 0.04, rs = 0.487) and with interleukin 1β (p = 0.008, rs = 0.525) and resistin (p = 0.004, rs = 0.6) mRNA concentrations. In conclusion, obesity in women is associated with increased expression of AGER in SAT, while T2DM is associated with increased AGER mRNA levels and pro-inflammatory adipokines in VAT.

Abstract
Mortality in acute infections is mostly associated with sepsis, defined as 'life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection'. It remains challenging to identify the patients with increased mortality risk due to the high heterogeneity in the dysregulated host immune response and disease progression. Biomarkers reflecting different pathways involved in the inflammatory response might improve prediction of mortality risk (prognostic enrichment) among patients with acute infections by reducing heterogeneity of the host response, as well as suggest novel strategies for patient stratification and treatment (predictive enrichment) through precision medicine approaches. The predictive value of inflammatory biomarkers has been extensively investigated in bacterial infections and the recent COVID-19 pandemic caused an increased interest in inflammatory biomarkers in this viral infection. However, limited research investigated whether the prognostic potential of these biomarkers differs between bacterial and viral infections. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of the value of various inflammatory biomarkers for the prediction of mortality in bacterial and viral infections.

Abstract
Adipokines are essential mediators produced by adipose tissue and exert multiple biological functions. In particular, adiponectin, leptin, resistin, IL-6, MCP-1 and PAI-1 play specific roles in the crosstalk between adipose tissue and other organs involved in metabolic, immune and vascular health. During obesity, adipokine imbalance occurs and leads to a low-grade pro-inflammatory status, promoting insulin resistance-related diabetes and its vascular complications. A causal link between obesity and gut microbiota dysbiosis has been demonstrated. The deregulation of gut bacteria communities characterizing this dysbiosis influences the synthesis of bacterial substances including lipopolysaccharides and specific metabolites, generated via the degradation of dietary components, such as short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine metabolized into trimethylamine-oxide in the liver and indole derivatives. Emerging evidence suggests that these bacterial metabolites modulate signaling pathways involved in adipokine production and action. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the molecular links between gut bacteria-derived metabolites and adipokine imbalance in obesity, and emphasizes their roles in key pathological mechanisms related to oxidative stress, inflammation, insulin resistance and vascular disorder. Given this interaction between adipokines and bacterial metabolites, the review highlights their relevance (i) as complementary clinical biomarkers to better explore the metabolic, inflammatory and vascular complications during obesity and gut microbiota dysbiosis, and (ii) as targets for new antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and prebiotic triple action strategies.

Abstract
Environmental factors such as diet and lifestyle have been shown to influence the development of some intestinal mucosal lesions that may be precursors of colorectal cancer (CRC). The presence of these alterations seems to be associated with misbalanced immunological parameter levels. However, it is still unclear as to which immunological parameters are altered in each phase of CRC development. In this work, we aimed to study the potential relationships of immunological and metabolic parameters with diet in a CRC-related lesion context. Dietary information was obtained using an annual semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) from 93 volunteers classified via colonoscopy examination according to the presence of intestinal polyps or adenocarcinoma. Cytokines, chemokines, and adipokines were determined from serum samples. We observed a reduction in adiponectin according to the damage to the mucosa, accompanied by an increase and decrease in C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) and resistin, respectively, in CRC cases. The presence of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the polyp group was associated with higher tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) concentrations. Vegetables were directly correlated with adiponectin and resistin levels, while the opposite occurred with red meat. A bioactive compound, soluble pectin, showed a negative association with TNF-α. Future dietary strategies could be developed to modulate specific immunological parameters in the context of CRC.

Abstract
Resistin is mainly expressed in human monocytes/macrophages and is associated with insulin resistance, inflammation, and atherosclerosis. Serum resistin is strongly correlated with the G-A haplotype defined by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) c.-420 C>G (SNP-420) (rs1862513) and c.-358 G>A (SNP-358) (rs3219175) in the promoter region of the human resistin gene (RETN). Smoking is also associated with insulin resistance. We investigated the association between smoking and serum resistin and the effect of the G-A haplotype on this association. Participants were recruited under the Toon Genome Study (an observational epidemiology research in the Japanese population). Of these, 1975 subjects genotyped for both SNP-420 and SNP-358 were analyzed for serum resistin by grouping them based on smoking status and G-A haplotype status. RETN mRNA, isolated from whole blood cells, was evaluated in smokers (n = 7) and age-, sex-, and BMI-matched non-smokers (n = 7) with the G-A haplotype homozygotes. Serum resistin tended to be higher in current smokers who smoked more cigarettes per day (P for trend < 0.0001). The positive association between serum resistin and smoking was strongest in the G-A haplotype homozygotes, followed by heterozygotes and non-carriers (interaction P < 0.0001). This positive association was stronger in the G-A homozygotes than the C-G homozygotes (interaction P < 0.0001). RETN mRNA was 1.40-fold higher in smokers than non-smokers with the G-A homozygotes (P = 0.022). Therefore, the positive association between serum resistin and smoking was strongest in the G-A haplotype homozygotes defined by RETN SNP-420 and SNP-358.

Abstract
Severe burns often have a high mortality rate due to sepsis, but the genetic and immune crosstalk between them remains unclear. In the present study, the GSE77791 and GSE95233 datasets were analysed to identify immune-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in disease progression in both burns and sepsis. Subsequently, weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA), gene enrichment analysis, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network construction, immune cell infiltration analysis, core gene identification, coexpression network analysis and clinical correlation analysis were performed. A total of 282 common DEGs associated with burns and sepsis were identified. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis identified the following enriched pathways in burns and sepsis: metabolic pathways; complement and coagulation cascades; legionellosis; starch and sucrose metabolism; and ferroptosis. Finally, six core DEGs were identified, namely, IL10, RETN, THBS1, FGF13, LCN2 and MMP9. Correlation analysis showed that some core DEGs were significantly associated with simultaneous dysregulation of immune cells. Of these, RETN upregulation was associated with a worse prognosis. The immune-related genes and dysregulated immune cells in severe burns and sepsis provide potential research directions for diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Background: Male contraceptive approaches besides tubal sterilization involve vasectomy and represent the method of choice among midlife men in developing countries thanks to many advantages. However, the subsidiary consequences of this intervention are insufficiently explored since the involved mechanisms may offer insight into a much more complex picture. Methods: Thus, in this manuscript, we aimed to reunite all available data by searching three separate academic database(s) (PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and Scopus) published in the past two decades by covering the interval 2000–2023 and using a predefined set of keywords and strings involving “oxidative stress” (OS), “inflammation”, and “semen microbiota” in combination with “humans”, “rats”, and “mice”. Results: By following all evidence that fits in the pre-, post-, and vasectomy reversal (VR) stages, we identified a total of n = 210 studies from which only n = 21 were finally included following two procedures of eligibility evaluation. Conclusions: The topic surrounding this intricate landscape has created debate since the current evidence is contradictory, limited, or does not exist. Starting from this consideration, we argue that further research is mandatory to decipher how a vasectomy might disturb homeostasis.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic and immune-mediated skin condition characterized by pro-inflammatory cytokines and keratinocyte hyperproliferation. Dendritic cells, T lymphocytes, and keratinocytes represent the main cell subtypes involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, while the interleukin-23 (IL-23)/IL-17 pathway enhances the disease progression. Human adipose tissue is an endocrine organ, which secretes multiple proteins, known as adipokines, such as adiponectin, leptin, visfatin, or resistin. Current evidence highlights the immunomodulatory roles of adipokines, which may contribute to the progression or suppression of psoriasis. A better understanding of the complexity of psoriasis pathophysiology linked with adipokines could result in developing novel diagnostic or therapeutic strategies. This review aims to present the pathogenesis of psoriasis and the roles of adipokines in this process.

Abstract
Introduction: The dysregulated immune response in sepsis is highly variable, ranging from hyperinflammation to immunoparalysis. Obesity is associated with the release of inflammatory mediators from adipose tissue, known as adipocytokines, causing a chronic inflammatory state. Perhaps counterintuitively, obesity is also associated with lower mortality in sepsis patients. We investigated the association between obesity, circulating adipocytokine concentrations, immune dysregulation, and outcome in sepsis patients. Methods In this secondary analysis of a prospective study, plasma concentrations of the adipocytokines leptin, adiponectin, and resistin were assessed in 167 patients at diagnosis of sepsis due to pneumonia, bacteremia, or acute cholangitis. Adipocytokines were compared between patients with normal weight (body mass index [BMI], 18.5-24.9 kg/m 2 ; n = 67), overweight (BMI, 25.0-29.9 kg/m 2 ; n = 56), and obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m 2 ; n = 42), as well as between immunological endotypes: hyperinflammation (n = 40), immunoparalysis (n = 62), and unclassified (n = 55). Results: Higher circulating concentrations of leptin were observed in patients with obesity compared with patients with normal weight ( P = 0.008) and overweight ( P = 0.02), whereas adiponectin and resistin plasma concentrations were not different ( P = 0.08 and P = 0.85, respectively). Resistin concentrations were associated with immunological endotypes, with the highest levels found in hyperinflammatory patients ( P < 0.001). Furthermore, resistin concentrations were predictive for 28-day mortality (adjusted odds ratio, 1.03 per 10 ng/mL; P = 0.04). These associations were not found for leptin and adiponectin. Conclusion: Obesity and BMI-related adipocytokines are not related to the development of a hyperactive or suppressed immune response as defined by ferritin and mHLA-DR expression in sepsis patients. Although resistin is related to the immune response and an increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes, these associations are similar in patients with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. This implies that the relationship between resistin and clinical outcome is likely driven by the inflammatory response and not by obesity itself. Taken together, although there exists a strong association between inflammation and sepsis mortality, our results do not point toward a role for obesity and BMI-related adipocytokines in immune dysregulation in sepsis patients.

Abstract
Obesity has been known to be a major risk factor for various types of cancers for several decades. More recently, the relationship between dysregulated adipokines and cancer development has been the focus of much research. Adipose tissue is an important endocrine organ that secretes adipokines that affect both autocrine and paracrine signaling. These adipokines modulate inflammation, induce insulin resistance, and regulate their own behavior and production. Adipokine-production dysregulation is due to physiological changes in adipose tissue that prompt molecular modifications, including low-grade inflammation and the stimulatory production of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, studies have linked DNA damage response, genomic instability, and the innate immune response to tumorigenesis. Further investigation of adipokines and their role in the promotion of genomic instability may clarify the link between obesity and cancer, as well as elucidate potential pharmaceutical targets. In this review, we discuss the progress of recent literature, focusing on the impact of adipokines, genomic instability, and the innate immune response on increasing the risk of cancer.

Abstract
Periodontitis (PDT) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have demonstrated a bidirectional relationship and imbalanced oxidative stress linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. Therefore, we investigated mitochondrial and redox (de)regulation in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in comorbid T2D-PDT, compared to PDT, T2D patients, and control individuals. PBMCs were analyzed for mitochondrial respiration, reactive oxygen species, antioxidant proteins, and expression of Nrf2-target genes. PDT and T2D-PDT patients exhibited altered periodontal clinical markers, while T2D and T2D-PDT patients displayed increased blood HbA1c. Decreased oxygen consumption and ATP production were observed in the PDT patient's PBMCs. PDT and T2D-PDT PBMCs also evidenced increased H2O2 levels and reduced catalase levels (also detected in T2D patients), whereas a compromised glutathione cycle was observed in T2D-PDT patients. PBMCs from both T2D or T2D-PDT patients showed increased Nrf2 protein levels, enhanced GCL activity and GCL-catalytic subunit protein levels, and maintained GCLc, GST, and HO-1 mRNA levels. In contrast, the expressions of Nrf2-target genes were significantly diminished in the PDT patient's PBMCs. Decreased SOD1 and GST mRNA levels were also observed in CD3+CD8+-lymphocytes derived from PDT and T2D-PDT patients. In conclusion, PBMCs from T2D-PDT patients showed major redox changes, while mononuclear cells from PDT patients showed mitochondrial deregulation and reduced expression of Nrf2-target genes.

Abstract
Resistin, an adipocyte-specific hormone involved in insulin resistance and adipocyte differentiation, was initially identified in adipose tissue and macrophages. The physiological role of this molecule in camels remains largely unexplored. This study analysed for the first time blood and tissue levels of resistin as well as expression of resistin gene by real time PCR in adipose tissue (hump, visceral & epididymal) and different muscles (gastrocnemius, heart and caecum) in dromedary camels. The results revealed that resistin concentration was significantly (P<0.01) higher in epididymal adipose tissue as compared to other tissues and the lowest concentration was detected in serum. Additionally, the differential mRNA expression levels of resistin gene showed the highest expression level in epididymal adipose tissue as compared to other tissues. In conclusion, the results demonstrated for the first time that resistin was expressed in different tissues of dromedary camels. These data underscore an important facet of the physiological role of resistin as a factor involved in insulin resistance and glucose metabolism in camels.

Abstract
Background Periodontitis is a major inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa that is not limited to the oral cavity but also has systemic consequences. Although the importance of chronic periodontitis has been emphasized, the systemic immune response induced by periodontitis and its therapeutic effects remain elusive. Here, we report the transcriptomes of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with periodontitis. Methods Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we profiled PBMCs from healthy controls and paired pre- and post-treatment patients with periodontitis. We extracted differentially expressed genes and biological pathways for each cell type and calculated activity scores reflecting cellular characteristics. Intercellular crosstalk was classified into therapy-responsive and -nonresponsive pathways. Results We analyzed pan-cellular differentially expressed genes caused by periodontitis and found that most cell types showed a significant increase in CRIP1, which was further supported by the increased levels of plasma CRIP1 observed in patients with periodontitis. In addition, activated cell type-specific ligand-receptor interactions, including the BTLA, IFN-γ, and RESISTIN pathways, were prominent in patients with periodontitis. Both the BTLA and IFN-γ pathways returned to similar levels in healthy controls after periodontal therapy, whereas the RESISTIN pathway was still activated even after therapy. Conclusion These data collectively provide insights into the transcriptome changes and molecular interactions that are responsive to periodontal treatment. We identified periodontitis-specific systemic inflammatory indicators and suggest unresolved signals of non-surgical therapy as future therapeutic targets. Abstract
Weight gain is the one of the most important factors which increases global burden of psychiatric disorder. Second-generation antipsychotics, olanzapine (Olz) and valproic acid (Vpa) in particular, are held responsible for weight gain. However, it is still uncertain how these drugs cause this. Thus, the rats selected for the experiment were randomly divided into 3 groups. The 1st group received only 0.5 ml saline solution intraperitoneally (n = 20, control group); the second group was given 200 mg / kg Vpa intraperitoneally (n = 20, Vpa group) and 2 mg / kg Olz was given intraperitoneally to the 3rd group (n = 20, Olz group) between 8 and 10 am for 30 days. We examined serum leptin, adiponectin, resistin, TNF-α, IL-6, ghrelin level and, the amount of ghrelin secreting cells in the stomach and growth hormone secretagogue receptor-1a (GHSR-1a, ghrelin receptor) expression in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamic GHS-1a receptor index was significantly higher in the Olz group compared with the control group and Vpa group (p = 0.036 and p = 0.016 respectively). Ghrelin immune positive cell index in stomach was statistically significantly lower in the Vpa group compared with the control and Olz groups (p = 0.028 and p = 0.013 respectively) There was no difference between the groups in terms of serum leptin, resistin, IL-6 and ghrelin levels. In the Vpa group, a statistically significant increase was found in serum adiponectin level compared with both the control group and the Olz group (p = 0009 and p = 0024 respectively) and, significant decrease was found in serum TNF-α level compared to Olz group (p = 0007). In conclusion, we found that the main cause of weight gain in Olz use was the increase in the number of hypothalamic ghrelin receptors. Investigating the mechanism by which Olz increases the number of ghrelin receptors may help to develop effective treatment strategies in preventing obesity in psychiatric patients.

Abstract
AIMS Increased resistin (Retn) levels are associated with development of cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of Retn in heart failure (HF) is still unclear. Here we probed the functional and molecular mechanism underlying the beneficial effect of Retn deletion in HF. METHODS AND RESULTS Wild-type (WT) and adipose tissue-specific Retn-knockout (RKO) mice were subjected to transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced HF. Cardiac function and haemodynamic changes were measured by echocardiography and left ventricular catheterization. Adipose tissue Retn deletion attenuated while Retn cardiac-selective overexpression, via a recombinant adeno-associated virus-9 vector, exacerbated TAC-induced hypertrophy, cardiac dysfunction, and myocardial fibrosis in WT and RKO mice. Mechanistically, we showed that Gadd45α was significantly increased in RKO HF mice while cardiac overexpression of Retn led to its downregulation. miR148b-3p directly targets Gadd45α and inhibits its expression. Retn overexpression upregulated miR148b-3p expression and triggered DNA damage response (DDR) in RKO-HF mice. Inhibition of miR148b-3p in vivo normalized Gadd45α expression, decreased DDR, and reversed cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis. In vitro Retn overexpression in adult mouse cardiomyocytes activated miR148b-3p and reduced Gadd45α expression. Gadd45α overexpression in H9C2-cardiomyoblasts protected against hydrogen peroxide- and Retn-induced DDR. CONCLUSION These findings reveal that diminution in circulating Retn reduced myocardial fibrosis and apoptosis, and improved heart function in a mouse model of HF, at least in part, through attenuation of miR148b-3p and DDR. The results of this study indicate that controlling Retn levels may provide a potential therapeutic approach for treating pressure overload-induced HF.

Abstract
Introduction Resistin is reported to form a cytokine network and cause endothelial damage. The pathogenesis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains unknown, but the association between cytokine storm and endothelial damage is crucial. This study aimed to evaluate resistin in COVID-19 pathogenesis compared with sepsis. Materials and Methods First, we evaluated the association of plasma resistin levels and disease severity and clinical outcome in two large cohorts: a publicly available cohort including 306 COVID-19 patients in the United States (MGH cohort) and our original cohort including only intubated 113 patients in Japan (Osaka cohort 1). Second, to understand pathogenesis, we evaluate resistin, cytokines and endothelial cell adhesion molecules in COVID-19 compared with sepsis. Blood samples were collected from 62 ICU-treated COVID-19 patients and 38 sepsis patients on day 1 (day of ICU admission), days 2-3, days 6-8, and from 18 healthy controls (Osaka cohort 2). The plasma resistin, inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1 and IL-10) and endothelial cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1 and VCAM-1) were compared between patients and control. Correlations among resistin, inflammatory cytokines and endothelial cell adhesion molecules were evaluated in COVID-19 and sepsis. Results In the MGH cohort, the day 1 resistin levels were associated with disease severity score. The non-survivors showed significantly greater resistin levels than survivors on days 1, 4 and 8. In the Osaka cohort 1, 28-day non-survivors showed significantly higher resistin levels than 28-day survivors on days 6-8. Patients with late recovery (defined as the day of weaning off mechanical ventilation >12 or death) had significantly higher resistin levels than those with early recovery on day 1 and days 6-8. In the Osaka cohort 2, plasma resistin levels were elevated in COVID-19 and sepsis patients compared to controls at all measurement points and were associated with inflammatory cytokines and endothelial cell adhesion molecules. Conclusion Resistin was elevated in COVID-19 patients and was associated with cytokines and endothelial cell adhesion molecules. Higher resistin levels were related to worse outcome.

Abstract
Background: Sedentary lifestyles, urbanization and improvements in socio-economic status have had serious effects on the burden of diabetes across the world. Diabetes is one of the 10 leading causes of death globally, and individuals with diabetes have a 2–3-fold increased risk of all-cause mortality. Adipose tissue is increasingly understood as a highly active endocrine gland that secretes many biologically active substances, including adipocytokines. However, the exact and discrete pathophysiological links between obesity and T2DM are not yet fully elucidated. Methods: In the current study, we present the association of five diverse adipocytokines, adiponectin, leptin, resistin, visfatin and chemerin, with T2DM in 87 patients (46 males and 41 females) with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 85 healthy controls (44 males and 41 females) from the Asir region of Saudi Arabia. The patients were divided into four groups: normal BMI, overweight, obese and severely obese. The baseline biochemical characteristics, including HbA1c and anthropometric lipid indices, such as BMI and waist–hip ratio, were determined by standard procedures, whereas the selected adipokine levels were assayed by ELISA. Results: The results showed significantly decreased levels of adiponectin in the T2DM patients compared to the control group, and the decrease was more pronounced in obese and severely obese T2DM patients. Serum leptin levels were significantly higher in the females compared to the males in the controls as well as all the four groups of T2DM patients. In the male T2DM patients, a progressive increase was observed in the leptin levels as the BMI increased, although these only reached significantly altered levels in the obese and severely obese patients. The serum leptin levels were significantly higher in the severely obese female patients compared to the controls, patients with normal BMI, and overweight patients. The leptin/adiponectin ratio was significantly higher in the obese and severely obese patients compared to the controls, patients with normal BMI, and overweight patients in both genders. The serum resistin levels did not show any significant differences between the males and females in thr controls or in the T2DM groups, irrespective of the BMI status of the T2DM patients. The visfatin levels did not reveal any significant gender-based differences, but significantly higher levels of visfatin were observed in the T2DM patients, irrespective of their level of obesity, although the higher values were observed in the obese and highly obese patients. Similarly, the serum chemerin levels in the controls, as well as in T2DM patients, did not show any significant gender-based differences. However, in the T2DM patients, the chemerin levels showed a progressive increase, with the increase in BMI reaching highly significant levels in the obese and severely obese patients, respectively. Conclusion: In summary, it is concluded that significantly altered concentrations of four adipokines, adiponectin, leptin, visfatin and chemerin, were found in the T2DM patient group compared to the controls, with more pronounced alterations observed in the obese and highly obese patients. Thus, it can be surmised that these four adipokines play a profound role in the onset, progression and associated complications of T2DM. In view of the relatively small sample size in our study, future prospective studies are needed on a large sample size to explore the in-depth relationship between adipokines and T2DM.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by increased pro-oxidative stress and a pro-inflammatory state. Several studies emphasized the protective effect of the Mediterranean dietary pattern (MDP). To assess the oxidative and inflammatory state according to the adherence to MDP using biomarkers in patients with MetS. Antioxidant and pro-inflammatory biomarkers were determined in plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and neutrophils of adults (aged 55–75 years old; 60% women) with MetS living in Mallorca (Spain). Anthropometrics, dietary intake by a validated semi-quantitative 143-item food frequency questionnaire, and a Dietary Inflammatory Index were measured. Patients with low adherence to MDP showed higher levels of glycated haemoglobin A1c and triglycerides, and lower levels of HDL cholesterol. Plasma levels of interleukin-1β, IL-6, IL-15, tumour necrosis factor α, xanthine oxidase, and ghrelin, and activities of superoxide dismutase, and myeloperoxidase were higher in subjects with low adherence to the MDP. Reactive oxygen species production in PBMCs and neutrophils stimulated with lipopolysaccharide was higher in participants with low adherence to the MDP. Patients with MetS and higher adherence to the MDP showed less altered anthropometric parameters, blood biochemical profile, and better oxidative and inflammatory status.

Abstract
In the last decade, there has been growing interest in the pathological involvement of hypertrophic mesenteric fat attached to the serosa of the inflamed intestinal segments involved in Crohn's disease [CD], known as creeping fat. In spite of its protective nature, creeping fat harbours an aberrant inflammatory activity which, in an already inflamed intestine, may explain why creeping fat is associated with a greater severity of CD. The transmural inflammation of CD facilitates the interaction of mesenteric fat with translocated intestinal microorganisms, contributing to activation of the immune response. This may be not the only way in which microorganisms alter the homeostasis of this fatty tissue: intestinal dysbiosis may also impair xenobiotic metabolism. All these CD-related alterations have a functional impact on nuclear receptors such as the farnesoid X receptor or the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ, which are implicated in regulation of the immune response, adipogenesis and the maintenance of barrier function, as well as on creeping fat production of inflammatory-associated cells such as adipokines. The dysfunction of creeping fat worsens the inflammatory course of CD and may favour intestinal fibrosis and fistulizing complications. However, our current knowledge of the pathophysiology and pathogenic role of creeping fat is controversial and a better understanding might provide new therapeutic targets for CD. Here we aim to review and update the key cellular and molecular alterations involved in this inflammatory process that link the pathological components of CD with the development of creeping fat.

Abstract
Chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue (AT) is a hallmark of obesity and contributes to various metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Inflammation in ATs is characterized by macrophage infiltration and the activation of inflammatory pathways mediated by NF-κB, JNK, and NLRP3 inflammasomes. Adipokines, hepatokines and myokines - proteins secreted from AT, the liver and skeletal muscle play regulatory roles in AT inflammation via endocrine, paracrine, and autocrine pathways. For example, obesity is associated with elevated levels of pro-inflammatory adipokines (e.g., leptin, resistin, chemerin, progranulin, RBP4, WISP1, FABP4, PAI-1, Follistatin-like1, MCP-1, SPARC, SPARCL1, and SAA) and reduced levels of anti-inflammatory adipokines such as adiponectin, omentin, ZAG, SFRP5, CTRP3, vaspin, and IL-10. Moreover, some hepatokines (Fetuin A, DPP4, FGF21, GDF15, and MANF) and myokines (irisin, IL-6, and DEL-1) also play pro- or anti-inflammatory roles in AT inflammation. This review aims to provide an updated understanding of these organokines and their role in AT inflammation and related metabolic abnormalities. It serves to highlight the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of these organokines and their clinical significance. Insights into the roles and mechanisms of these organokines could provide novel and potential therapeutic targets for obesity-induced inflammation.

Abstract
Simple Summary Obesity and its associated complications, such as metabolic syndrome, are an increasing problem in both humans and horses in the developed world. Adipose tissue is a key endocrine organ that communicates with other organs by multiple endocrine substances called adipokines. There is evidence to suggest that adipokines may contribute to the regulation of biological processes, such as metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of one of these adipokines in horses, resistin, and its relationship with insulin dysregulation (ID) and inflammation. Seventy-two horses, included in one of the four following groups, were studied: healthy controls, horses with inflammatory conditions, horses with mild, and horses with severe ID. Plasma resistin concentrations were significantly different between groups, and the highest values were recorded in the inflammatory and severe ID groups. The lack of correlation of resistin with basal insulin concentration and the significant correlation of resistin with the inflammatory marker serum amyloid A suggest that, as is the case in humans, plasma resistin concentrations in horses are predominantly related to inflammatory conditions and not to ID. Abstract Obesity and its associated complications, such as metabolic syndrome, are an increasing problem in both humans and horses in the developed world. The expression patterns of resistin differ considerably between species. In rodents, resistin is expressed by adipocytes and is related to obesity and ID. In humans, resistin is predominantly produced by inflammatory cells, and resistin concentrations do not reflect the degree of obesity, although they may predict cardiovascular outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of resistin and its relationship with ID and selected indicators of inflammation in horses. Seventy-two horses, included in one of the four following groups, were studied: healthy controls (C, n = 14), horses with inflammatory conditions (I, n = 21), horses with mild ID (ID1, n = 18), and horses with severe ID (ID2, n = 19). Plasma resistin concentrations were significantly different between groups and the higher values were recorded in the I and ID2 groups (C: 2.38 ± 1.69 ng/mL; I: 6.85 ± 8.38 ng/mL; ID1: 2.41 ± 2.70 ng/mL; ID2: 4.49 ± 3.08 ng/mL). Plasma resistin was not correlated with basal insulin concentrations. A significant (r = 0.336, p = 0.002) correlation was found between resistin and serum amyloid A. Our results show that, as is the case in humans, plasma resistin concentrations in horses are predominantly related to inflammatory conditions and not to ID. Horses with severe ID showed an elevation in resistin that may be secondary to the inflammatory status associated with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Adipocytokines are the major secretory products of adipose tissue and potential markers of metabolism and inflammation. However, their association in host immune response against tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBL) disease is not known. Thus, we measured the systemic levels of adipocytokines in TBL (n = 44) and compared to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB, n = 44) and healthy control (HC, n = 44) individuals. We also examined the pre and post-treatment adipocytokine levels in TBL individuals upon completion of standard anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT). The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) were performed between TBL, PTB and HCs to find the potential discriminatory markers. Finally, principal component (PCA) analysis was performed to reveal the expression patterns of adipocytokines among study groups. Our results demonstrate that TBL is associated with significantly higher systemic levels of adipocytokines (except resistin) when compared with PTB and significantly lower levels when compared with HC (except adiponectin) individuals. Upon completion of ATT, the systemic levels of adiponectin and resistin were significantly decreased when compared to pre-treatment levels. Upon ROC analysis, all the three adipocytokines discriminated TBL from PTB but not with HCs, respectively. Similarly, adipocytokines were differentially clustered in TBL in comparison to PTB in PCA analysis. Therefore, adipocytokines are a distinguishing feature in TBL compared to PTB individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hundreds of adipokines have been identified, and their extensive range of endocrine functions-regulating distant organs such as oral tissues-and local autocrine/paracrine roles have been studied. In dentistry, however, adipokines are poorly known proteins in the dental pulp; few of them have been studied despite their large number. This study reviews recent advances in the investigation of dental-pulp adipokines, with an emphasis on their roles in inflammatory processes and their potential therapeutic applications. HIGHLIGHTS The most recently identified adipokines in dental pulp include leptin, adiponectin, resistin, ghrelin, oncostatin, chemerin, and visfatin. They have numerous physiological and pathological functions in the pulp tissue: they are closely related to pulp inflammatory mechanisms and actively participate in cell differentiation, mineralization, angiogenesis, and immune-system modulation. CONCLUSION Adipokines have potential clinical applications in regenerative endodontics and as biomarkers or targets for the pharmacological management of inflammatory and degenerative processes in dental pulp. A promising direction for the development of new therapies may be the use of agonists/antagonists to modulate the expression of the most studied adipokines.

Abstract
Background Resistin is an endogenous ligand of Toll-like receptor 4 that activates several inflammatory signals. But the physiological function of resistin in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains unknown. The goal of this research was to explore the associations between serum resistin and the severity and prognosis in CAP patients through a retrospective cohort study. Methods All 212 CAP patients and 106 healthy cases were enrolled. Demographic characteristics were extracted. Serum resistin was determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The prognosis was tracked in CAP patients. Results Serum resistin on admission was raised in CAP patients compared with control cases. The level of resistin was gradually increased in parallel with CAP severity scores in CAP patients. Pearson and Spearman analyses revealed that serum resistin was positively correlated with CAP severity scores, white blood cells, urea nitrogen, creatinine, and inflammatory cytokines among CAP patients. There were negative relationships between resistin and hematocrit and albumin in CAP patients. Besides, linear and logistic regression analyses further indicated that serum resistin on admission was positively associated with CAP severity scores among CAP patients. Follow-up research revealed that serum resistin elevation on admission prolonged hospital stay in CAP patients. Conclusion Serum resistin on admission is positively correlated with the severity and hospital stay in CAP patients, indicating that resistin may be involved in the physiological process of CAP. Serum resistin may be a potential biomarker in the diagnosis and prognosis for CAP.

Abstract
Resistin is associated with atherosclerosis progression by affecting inflammation and insulin resistance. There are controversial data regarding the prognostic value of resistin in stable coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. We prospectively investigated the long-term prognostic value of resistin in patients with stable CAD. A total 741 consecutive patients with stable CAD were followed for a median of 5.5 years. Serum resistin, lipids, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured at baseline. Primary endpoints were cardiac death and secondary hospitalizations for acute coronary syndrome, arrhythmic event or ischemic stroke. Follow-up data were obtained from 703 patients of whom 79 had a cardiac death (11.2%) and 205 (29.2%) met the secondary endpoints. Resistin was positively correlated with hsCRP (r = 0.159, p < 0.001) and IL-6 (r = 0.165, p = 0.002), and negatively with high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (r = - 0.176, p < 0.001). Resistin levels could not predict cardiac death [HR 1.044; 95% CI 0.994-1.096; p = 0.087] neither secondary endpoints [HR 1.025; 95% CI 0.983-1.068; p = 0.250). Among 298 patients (42.4%) with metabolic syndrome (MS) resistin levels were independently associated with cardiac death after adjustment for conventional risk factors [HR 1.121; 95% CI 1.045-1.204; p = 0.002). Further adjustment for ejection fraction of left ventricle (LVEF) did not change the association (HR 1.145; 95% CI 1.057-1.240; p = 0.001). Patients with resistin values ≥ 7.6 ng/mL (median level) had 2.8 times higher risk of cardiac death compared to those with resistin levels < 7.6 ng/mL after adjustment for traditional risk factors and LVEF (HR 2.882; 95% CI 1.311-6.336; p = 0.008). Resistin is independently associated with cardiac death in patients with stable CAD and MS.

Abstract
The escalating global burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus necessitates the implementation of strategies that are both more reliable and faster in order to improve the early identification of insulin resistance (IR) in high-risk groups, including overweight and obese individuals. The use of salivary biomarkers offers a promising alternative to serum collection because it is safer, more comfortable, and less painful to obtain saliva samples. As obesity is the foremost contributory factor in IR development, the adipocytokines such as leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin secreted from the adipose tissue have been studied as potential reliable biomarkers for IR. Measurement of salivary adipokines as predictors for IR has attracted widespread attention because of the strong correlation between their blood and salivary concentrations. One of the adipokines that is closely related to IR is resistin. However, there are conflicting findings on resistin’s potential role as an etiological link between obesity and IR and the reliability of measuring salivary resistin as a biomarker for IR. Hence this study reviewed the available evidence on the potential use of salivary resistin as a biomarker for IR in order to attempt to gain a better understanding of the role of resistin in the development of IR in obese individuals.

Abstract
Resistin, a cysteine-rich protein, expressed in adipocytes, was initially proposed as a link between obesity and diabetes in mice. In humans, resistin is considered to be a pro-inflammatory molecule expressed in immune cells, which plays a regulatory role in many chronic inflammatory diseases, metabolic diseases, infectious diseases, and cancers. However, increasing evidence shows that resistin functions as a host defense peptide of innate immunity, in terms of its wide-spectrum anti-microbial activity, modulation of immunity, and limitation of microbial product-induced inflammation. To date, the understanding of resistin participating in host defense mechanism is still limited. The review aims to summarize current knowledge about the biological properties, functions, and related mechanisms of resistin in host defense, which provides new insights into the pleiotropic biological function of resistin and yields promising strategies for developing new antimicrobial therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Chemerin and resistin are two adipocytokines involved in inflammatory processes that may paly a role in the development of endometriosis. The purpose of the current study was to examine the levels of chemerin and resistin in the follicular fluid (FF) of endometriosis patients and additionally, assess the association of FF chemerin and resistin with the severity of endometriosis and the number of mature oocyte and embryos. A total of 80 reproductive-aged women who underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection and embryo transfer were evaluated in this study. FF samples were obtained from subjects with (n = 40) and without endometriosis (n = 40). The concentrations of chemerin and resistin were examined using ELISA. The Resistin FF level was significantly (p-value=.03) higher in women with endometriosis than women without endometriosis, while the effect size was medium (d = 0.47). There was no significant difference in Chemerin concentration between the two groups of this study. Results also showed a tendency towards the increase of FF values of resistin and chemerin in endometriosis patients with stage III-IV than stage I-II; however, this difference was not significant. No significant correlations were found between FF levels of resistin and chemerin with the number of mature oocyte and embryos. Thus, elevated FF resistin levels may be associated with endometriosis.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? To our knowledge, no studies have investigated chemerin levels in follicular fluid of infertile women with endometriosis undergoing ICSI. Although follicular fluid levels of resistin have been previously studied in endometriosis, it has not been studied yet whether its level is associated with the number of oocyte and embryos.What do the results of this study add? Our results indicate that significantly increased resistin levels in follicular fluid may be associated with the presence of endometriosis.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? The findings are promising in that significantly increased resistin levels may add to the knowledge of the pathophysiology of endometriosis.

Abstract
Background Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and the consecutive multiple organ failure (MOF) are severe and dreaded complications with a high mortality in multiple trauma patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of the adipokines leptin, resistin, interleukin-17A and interleukin-33 as possible biomarkers in the early posttraumatic inflammatory response and for identifying severely traumatized patients at risk of developing MODS. Methods In total, 14 multiple trauma patients with an injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 16 as well as a control group of 14 non-multiple trauma patients were included in this study and blood samples were taken at the time points 0, 6, 24, 48 and 72 h after admission. For the trauma patients, the SIRS and Denver MOF score were determined daily. The quantitative measurement of the plasma concentrations of the adipokines was performed using ELISA. Results In the statistical analysis, the multiple trauma patients showed statistically significant higher plasma concentrations of leptin, resistin, IL-17A and IL-33 compared to the control group. In addition, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the concentrations of resistin, IL-17A and IL-33 and the corresponding SIRS scores and between the concentrations of resistin, IL-17A and IL-33 and the corresponding Denver MOF scores. Finally, ROC curve analysis revealed that the adipokines leptin and IL-17A are suitable diagnostic markers for the discrimination between multiple trauma patients with and without MOF. Conclusions Leptin and IL-17A could be suitable diagnostic markers to identify severely injured patients with a developing SIRS and MOF earlier, to adjust surgical therapy planning and intensive care.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), chronic inflammatory disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract, include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. There are increasing clinical and experimental data showing that obesity, especially visceral adiposity, plays a substantial role in the pathogenesis of IBD. Obesity seems to be an important risk factor also for IBD disease severity and clinical outcomes. Visceral adipose tissue is an active multifunctional metabolic organ involved in lipid storage and immunological and endocrine activity. Bowel inflammation penetrates the surrounding adipose tissue along the mesentery. Mesenteric fat serves as a barrier to inflammation and controls immune responses to the translocation of gut bacteria. At the same time, mesenteric adipose tissue may be the principal source of cytokines and adipokines responsible for inflammatory processes associated with IBD. This review is particularly focusing on the potential role of adipokines in IBD pathogenesis and their possible use as promising therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the role of resistin in the onset and development of obesity-related hypertension.Methods: Resistin serum levels were tested by ELISA in 153 adult subjects among four characteristic Chinese adult physical examination groups. Waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SB), diastolic blood pressure (DB), and other clinical laboratory data were collected. Following, correlations between research index and differences between groups were analyzed using SPSS.Results: Serum resistin levels statistically significantly negatively correlated with SB, DB and BMI, but statistically significantly positively correlated with serum creatinine (SCR) and serum albumin (ALB), even after adjustment for age and/or gender. The serum level of resistin in the normal healthy subject group (NH) was higher than in other groups.Conclusions: Resistin's role in the onset of obesity-related hypertension may be more important than what has been previously assumed. Abstract
The global obesity epidemic is a major contributor to chronic disease and disability in the world today. Since the discovery of leptin in 1994, a multitude of studies have characterized the pathological changes that occur within adipose tissue in the obese state. One significant change is the dysregulation of adipokine production. Adipokines are an indispensable link between metabolism and optimal immune system function; however, their dysregulation in obesity contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation and disease pathology. Herein, I will highlight current knowledge on adipokine structure and physiological function, and focus on the known roles of these factors in the modulation of the immune response. I will also discuss adipokines in rheumatic and autoimmune diseases.

This study aimed at evaluating the role played by insulin resistance, lipid metabolism disorder, oxidative stress, resistin, vaspin, Interleukin-18 and asymmetric dimethyl arginine as a marker for endothelial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. This prospective observational cohort study involved 60 women who were classified into: 20 non-pregnant women (group 1 or control group), 20 normally pregnant women (group 2) and 20 preeclamptic women (group 3) at their third trimester. The pregnant women were assessed at their third trimester and further re-evaluated four weeks after delivery. The assessment included demography, assessment of proteinuria and urinary protein to creatinine ratio, blood pressure measurement and assessment of fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin level, lipid panel and the circulating levels of malondialdehyde, resistin, vaspin, interleukin-18 and asymmetric dimethyl arginine. Preeclamptic women showed more atherogenic lipid profile, significantly higher Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and significantly elevated levels of malondialdehyde, resistin, vaspin and interleukin-18 than the other study groups. Serum asymmetric dimethyl arginine concentration showed non-significant difference among the three study groups. The levels of resistin and vaspin showed significant decrease four weeks postpartum in preeclamptic group. We concluded that, preeclampsia was associated with insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, inflammation and significant changes in adipokines; resistin and vaspin. Furthermore, the significant increase in the serum levels of resistin and vaspin at the third trimester and their significant decline four weeks postpartum in preeclamptic group focus the attention on the role played by these adipokines in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

Abstract
The term energy metabolism comprises the entirety of chemical processes associated with uptake, conversion, storage, and breakdown of nutrients. All these must be tightly regulated in time and space to ensure metabolic homeostasis in an environment characterized by cycles such as the succession of day and night. Most organisms evolved endogenous circadian clocks to achieve this goal. In mammals, a ubiquitous network of cellular clocks is coordinated by a pacemaker residing in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus. Adipocytes harbor their own circadian clocks, and large aspects of adipose physiology are regulated in a circadian manner through transcriptional regulation of clock-controlled genes. White adipose tissue (WAT) stores energy in the form of triglycerides at times of high energy levels that then serve as fuel in times of need. It also functions as an endocrine organ, releasing factors in a circadian manner to regulate food intake and energy turnover in other tissues. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) produces heat through nonshivering thermogenesis, a process also controlled by the circadian clock. We here review how WAT and BAT contribute to the circadian regulation of energy metabolism. We describe how adipose rhythms are regulated by the interplay of systemic signals and local clocks and summarize how adipose-originating circadian factors feed-back on metabolic homeostasis. The role of adipose tissue in the circadian control of metabolism becomes increasingly clear as circadian disruption leads to alterations in adipose tissue regulation, promoting obesity and its sequelae. Stabilizing adipose tissue rhythms, in turn, may help to combat disrupted energy homeostasis and obesity.

Abstract
Inflammatory colon diseases, which are a global health concern, include a variety of gastrointestinal tract disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer. The pathogenesis of these colon disorders involves immune alterations with the pronounced infiltration of innate and adaptive immune cells into the intestines and the augmented expression of mucosal pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated by commensal microbiota. Epidemiological studies during the past half century have shown that the proportion of obese people in a population is associated with the incidence and pathogenesis of gastrointestinal tract disorders. The advancement of understanding of the immunological basis of colon disease has shown that adipocyte-derived biologically active substances (adipokines) modulate the role of innate and adaptive immune cells in the progress of intestinal inflammation. The biomedical significance in immunological homeostasis of adipokines, including adiponectin, leptin, apelin and resistin, is clear. In this review, we highlight the existing literature on the effect and contribution of adipokines to the regulation of immunological homeostasis in inflammatory colon diseases and discuss their crucial roles in disease etiology and pathogenesis, as well as the implications of these results for new therapies in these disorders.

Abstract
Obesity is one of the major modifiable risk factors in breast cancer, with obese adipose tissue showing a pathological role in breast cancer development and malignancy via the release of secretory factors, such as proinflammatory cytokines and adipocytokines. The current article focuses on visfatin and resistin, two such adipocytokines that have emerged over the last two decades as leading breast cancer promoting factors in obesity. The clinical association of circulating visfatin and resistin with breast cancer and their biological mechanisms are reviewed, in addition to their role in the context of tumor-stromal interactions in the breast cancer microenvironment. Recent findings have unraveled several mediators of visfatin and resistin that are involved in the crosstalk between breast cancer cells and adipose tissue in the breast tumor microenvironment, including growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Finally, current therapeutics targeting visfatin and resistin and their respective pathways are discussed, including future therapeutic strategies such as new drug design or neutralizing peptides that target extracellular visfatin or resistin. These hold promise in the development of novel breast cancer therapies and are of increasing relevance as the prevalence of obesity-related breast cancer increases worldwide.

Abstract
Extract of Cyclolepis genistoides D. Don (vernacular name Palo azul; Palo) are traditionally consumed in the Republic of Paraguay in South America for the treatment of diabetes and kidney disease, and is sold in Japan as dietary supplement. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of anti-diabetes activity of Palo, especially focused on insulin resistance. Palo promoted adipocytes differentiation and regulated adipokine profiles in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by modulation of PPARγ, a major regulator of adipose differentiation. Human adipocyte showed almost similar profile with 3T3-L1 against Palo treatment. Furthermore, Palo treatment (250 or 1000 mg/kg) was performed with C57BL/6J mice for 14 weeks, being fed high-fat-diet (HFD60) simultaneously. Palo 250 mg/kg exhibited a tendency to decrease subcutaneous adipose volume along with increase of PPARγ and its target, adiponectin mRNA expression. In addition, as the other insulin targeted cell, effect on muscle differentiation was examined. Palo increased differentiation of C2C12 mouse muscle myoblasts by increase of IGF-1, myogenin, and myosine heavy chain (MHC) as well as 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Palo subsequently promoted myotube formation under differentiation condition. From the above, it was clarified that Palo acts variously on the differentiation and maturation of both adipocytes and muscle cells, and from the viewpoint of the regulatory mechanism for adipocytes, PPARγ-inducing action was shown to be a mechanism that acts across species.

Abstract
Exercise is an effective strategy for preventing and treating obesity and its related cardiometabolic disorders, resulting in significant loss of body fat mass, white adipose tissue browning, redistribution of energy substrates, optimization of global energy expenditure, enhancement of hypothalamic circuits that control appetite-satiety and energy expenditure, and decreased systemic inflammation and insulin resistance. Novel exercise-inducible soluble factors, including myokines, hepatokines, and osteokines, and immune cytokines and adipokines are hypothesized to play an important role in the body's response to exercise. To our knowledge, no review has provided a comprehensive integrative overview of these novel molecular players and the mechanisms involved in the redistribution of metabolic fuel during and after exercise, the loss of weight and fat mass, and reduced inflammation. In this review, we explain the potential role of these exercise-inducible factors, namely myokines, such as irisin, IL-6, IL-15, METRNL, BAIBA, and myostatin, and hepatokines, in particular selenoprotein P, fetuin A, FGF21, ANGPTL4, and follistatin. We also describe the function of osteokines, specifically osteocalcin, and of adipokines such as leptin, adiponectin, and resistin. We also emphasize an integrative overview of the pleiotropic mechanisms, the metabolic pathways, and the inter-organ crosstalk involved in energy expenditure, fat mass loss, reduced inflammation, and healthy weight induced by exercise.

Abstract
Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The exact mechanism by which adipose tissue induces insulin resistance is still unclear. It has been demonstrated that obesity is associated with the adipocyte dysfunction, macrophage infiltration, and low-grade inflammation, which probably contributes to the induction of insulin resistance. Adipose tissue synthesizes and secretes numerous bioactive molecules, namely adipokines and cytokines, which affect the metabolism of both lipids and glucose. Disorders in the synthesis of adipokines and cytokines that occur in obesity lead to changes in lipid and carbohydrates metabolism and, as a consequence, may lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Obesity is also associated with the accumulation of lipids. A special group of lipids that are able to regulate the activity of intracellular enzymes are biologically active lipids: long-chain acyl-CoAs, ceramides, and diacylglycerols. According to the latest data, the accumulation of these lipids in adipocytes is probably related to the development of insulin resistance. Recent studies indicate that the accumulation of biologically active lipids in adipose tissue may regulate the synthesis/secretion of adipokines and proinflammatory cytokines. Although studies have revealed that inflammation caused by excessive fat accumulation and abnormalities in lipid metabolism can contribute to the development of obesity-related insulin resistance, further research is needed to determine the exact mechanism by which obesity-related insulin resistance is induced.

Abstract
Resistin is a small secretory protein that has a pleiotropic role in rodents and humans. Both rodent resistin and human resistin have an extremely stable and high-order multimeric structure. Moreover, there is significant variation in the source of secretion and the diversity of functions of resistin. Mouse resistin resists insulin action and contributes to type 2 diabetes mellitus, while human resistin plays a role in inflammation and also functions as a small accessory chaperone. Currently, active research in the area identified a significant role for resistin in stress biology and as a biomarker in diagnostics to evaluate disease status and treatment outcome. This review summarizes recent developments within resistin biology including their association with obesity, inflammation, stress response mechanisms, and its role in clinical diagnostics.

Abstract
Aim To evaluate the serum concentrations of inflammatory mediators in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with or without renal alteration (RA) function. Methods Serum samples from 76 patients with T2DM and 24 healthy individuals were selected. Patients with T2DM were divided into two groups according to eGFR (> or < 60mL/min/1.73m2). Cytokines, chemokines and adipokines levels were evaluated using the Multiplex immunoassay and ELISA. Results TNFR1 and leptin were higher in the T2DM group with RA than in the T2DM group without RA and control group. All patients with T2DM showed increased resistin, IL-8, and MIP-1α compared to the control group. Adiponectin were higher and IL-4 decreased in the T2DM group with RA compared to the control group. eGFR positively correlated with IL-4 and negatively with TNFR1, TNFR2, and leptin in patients with T2DM. In the T2DM group with RA, eGFR was negatively correlated with TNFR1 and resistin. TNFR1 was positively correlated with resistin and leptin, as well as resistin with IL-8 and leptin. Conclusion Increased levels of TNFR1, adipokines, chemokines and decrease of IL-4 play important role in the inflammatory process developed in T2DM and decreased renal function. We also suggest that TNFR1 is a strong predictor of renal dysfunction in patients with T2DM.
