Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the removal of emerging contaminants from aquatic environments

In-situ co-immobilization of lipase, lipoxygenase and L-cysteine within a metal-amino acid framework for conversion of soybean oil into higher-value products

We propose a co-immobilized chemo-enzyme cascade system to mitigate random intermediate diffusion from the mixture of individual immobilized catalysts and achieve a one-pot reaction of multi-enzyme and reductant. Catalyzed by lipase and lipoxygenase, unsaturated lipid hydroperoxides (HPOs) were synthesized. 13(S)-hydroperoxy-9Z, 11E-octadecadienoic acid (13-HPODE), one compound of HPOs, was subsequently reduced to 13(S)-hydroxy-9Z, 11E-octadecadienoic acid (13-HODE) by cysteine. Upon the optimized conditions, 75.28 mg of 13-HPODE and 4.01 mg of 13-HODE were produced from per milliliter of oil. The co-immobilized catalysts exhibited improved yield compared to the mixture of individually immobilized catalysts. Moreover, it demonstrated satisfactory durability and recyclability, maintaining a relative HPOs yield of 78.5% after 5 cycles. This work has achieved the co-immobilization of lipase, lipoxygenase and the reductant cysteine for the first time, successfully applying it to the conversion of soybean oil into 13-HODE. It offers a technological platform for transforming various oils into high-value products.

Sonocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using SnO2 hollow-nanofiber decorated with UiO-66-NH2

In this study, a porous hollow nanofiber SnO2 was decorated with UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles with straightforward solvothermal method and utilized for sonocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) by ultrasonic irradiation (USI). The prepared materials were characterized using different techniques such as SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, BET, XPS, UV-DRS, EIS, and zeta potential. SnO2 PHNF/UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposite offered the highest apparent rate constant of 0.0397 min-1 which was 6.3 and 3.1 times higher than those obtained for SnO2 PHNF and UiO-66-NH2, respectively. The integration of nanocomposite components revealed the synergy factor of 1.58, which can be due to the created heterojunctions resulted in efficiently charge carriers separation and retaining high redox ability. The effects of different affecting parameters such as TC initial concentration, pH of the solution, catalyst dosage, trapping agents, and coexisting anions on the catalytic performance were examined. The inhibitory effects of anions were confirmed to be decreased in the sequence of Cl- > NO3- > SO42-, while the sonocatalytic efficiency of the nanocomposite improved considerably in the presence of humic acid and bicarbonate. Also, the excellent performance of the catalyst was preserved during six successive cycles, suggesting the high stability of the prepared catalyst. In addition, based on the scavenger analysis, the created O2·-, OH·, and holes were contributed to the TC degradation. In conclusion, the creation heterojunction is an impressive methodology for improving the sonocatalytic activity of a catalyst, and SnO2 PHNF/UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposite was introduced as a satisfactory catalyst in sonocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants.

Preparation of Guanidine-Grafted NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/Polyvinylidene Fluoride Mixed Matrix Membranes for Adsorption of Pb2+ for Isopropanol Purification

Electronic-grade isopropyl alcohol is widely utilized in the cleaning of semiconductors and microelectronic components. Removing ions like Pb2+ is crucial since the presence of impurities may cause degradation of electronics, increased failure rates, and short circuits. Membrane materials offer a number of advantages in the field of adsorption separation; however, the lack of adsorption sites results in limited adsorption capacity. In the current work, guanidino-grafted NH2-MIL-101(Fe) was incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare MOF/PVDF mixed matrix membranes (NM/PVDF) for the removal of Pb2+ from isopropanol. Benefiting from the larger specific surface area and more lone electron pairs in the guanidine group, the Pb2+ adsorption capacity of the as-prepared NM/PVDF membrane was 29.4458 mg/g, which was higher than that of the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/PVDF membrane (20.9306 mg/g) and the pure PVDF membrane (6.7324 mg/g). The NM/PVDF membrane was able to reduce the concentration of Pb2+ from 500 to 86.73 ppb. This work highlights the potential of guanidine-grafted Fe-based MOFs/PVDF membranes as adsorbents for acquisition of electronic-grade solvents.

Sustainable application of modified Luffa cylindrica biomass for removal of trimethoprim in water by adsorption with process optimization

The present study describes a set of methodological procedures (seldom applied together), including (i) development of an alternative adsorbent derived from abundant low-cost plant biomass; (ii) use of simple low-cost biomass modification techniques based on physical processing and chemical activation; (iii) design of experiments (DoE) applied to optimize the removal of a pharmaceutical contaminant from water; (iv) at environmentally relevant concentrations, (v) that due to initial low concentrations required determination by ultra-performance liquid phase chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). A central composite rotational design (CCRD) was employed to investigate the performance of vegetable sponge biomass (Luffa cylindrica), physically processed (crushing and sieving) and chemically activated with phosphoric acid, in the adsorption of the antibiotic trimethoprim (TMP) from water. The optimized model identified pH as the most significant variable, with maximum drug removal (91.1 ± 5.7%) achieved at pH 7.5, a temperature of 22.5 °C, and an adsorbent/adsorbate ratio of 18.6 mg µg-1. The adsorption mechanisms and surface properties of the adsorbent were examined through characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), point of zero charge (pHpzc) measurement, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), specific surface area, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The best kinetic fit was obtained by the Avrami fractional-order model. The hypothesis of a hybrid behavior of the adsorbent was suggested by the equilibrium results presented by the Langmuir and Freundlich models and reinforced by the Redlich-Peterson model, which achieved the best fit (R2 = 0.982). The thermodynamic study indicated an exothermic, spontaneous, and favorable process. The maximum adsorption capacity of the material was 2.32 × 102 µg g-1 at an equilibrium time of 120 min. Finally, a sustainable and promising adsorbent for the polishing of aqueous matrices contaminated by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) at environmentally relevant concentrations is available for future investigations.

Separable Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for the Adsorption of Emerging Contaminants

Thousands of chemicals have been released into the environment in recent decades. The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water has emerged as a pressing concern. Adsorption is a viable solution for the removal of ECs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential as efficient adsorbents, but their dispersed powder form limits their practical applications. Recently, researchers have developed various separable MOF-based adsorbents to improve their recyclability. The purpose of this review is to summarize the latest developments in the construction of separable MOF-based adsorbents and their applications in adsorbing ECs. The construction strategies for separable MOFs are classified into four categories: magnetic MOFs, MOF-fiber composites, MOF gels, and binder-assisted shaping. Typical emerging contaminants include pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The adsorption performance of different materials is evaluated based on the results of static and dynamic adsorption experiments. Additionally, the regeneration methods of MOF-based adsorbents are discussed in detail to facilitate effective recycling and reuse. Finally, challenges and potential future research opportunities are proposed, including reducing performance losses during the shaping process, developing assessment systems based on dynamic purification and real polluted water, optimizing regeneration methods, designing multifunctional MOFs, and low-cost, large-scale synthesis of MOFs.

"On-On-Off" Recyclable Fluorescence Battery for Direct and Selective Detection of Glyphosate and Cu2

Residues of environmental organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) will seriously endanger human health. Most reported OP sensors utilized the restrictions capacity of OPs on the catalytic capacity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) to acetylthiocholine chloride (ATCh), which suffers from high costs, weak stability, long reaction time, and unrecyclable. Herein, a recyclable strategy was proposed for selective and sensitive detection of glyphosate (Gly). The weak fluorescence of UIO-66-NH2 at 450 nm was enhanced almost 10-fold after reacting with Gly because of the rotation-restricted emission enhancement mechanism. Moreover, inspired by the process of charging and discharging the batteries, we introduced Cu2+ to chelate with Gly. Because of the strong chelation between Cu2+ and Gly, the Gly was removed from UIO-66-NH2, which resulted in the quenching of fluorescence intensity and making UIO-66-NH2 recycle. This method proposed is fast, recyclable, easily conducted, and with a low 0.33 μM LOD in dd H2O based on 3σ/S. The recovery rates of Gly in tap water ranged from 93.07 to 104.35% within a satisfied 7.75% RSD. The Cu2+ LOD is 0.01 mM based on 3σ/S and 94.37-118.34% recovery rates within 6.48% RSD in tap water. We believe that the findings in this work provide a meaningful and promising strategy to detect Gly and Cu2+ in real samples. This sensor first successfully achieves the recycling use of the material in OP fluorescence detection, which greatly decreases the cost of the designed sensor and reduces the possibility of secondary pollution to the environment, broadens a new circulation dimension of fluorescence detection methods in detecting OPs, and has the potential to remove glyphosate from water. It also provides a method to utilize functionalized metal-organic frameworks to establish various sensors.

Comprehensive review of emerging contaminants: Detection technologies, environmental impact, and management strategies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a diverse group of unregulated pollutants increasingly present in the environment. These contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine disruptors, and industrial chemicals, can enter the environment through various pathways and persist, accumulating in the food chain and posing risks to ecosystems and human health. This comprehensive review examines the chemical characteristics, sources, and varieties of ECs. It critically evaluates the current understanding of their environmental and health impacts, highlighting recent advancements and challenges in detection and analysis. The review also assesses existing regulations and policies, identifying shortcomings and proposing potential enhancements. ECs pose significant risks to wildlife and ecosystems by disrupting animal hormones, causing genetic alterations that diminish diversity and resilience, and altering soil nutrient dynamics and the physical environment. Furthermore, ECs present increasing risks to human health, including hormonal disruptions, antibiotic resistance, endocrine disruption, neurological effects, carcinogenic effects, and other long-term impacts. To address these critical issues, the review offers recommendations for future research, emphasizing areas requiring further investigation to comprehend the full implications of these contaminants. It also suggests increased funding and support for research, development of advanced detection technologies, establishment of standardized methods, adoption of precautionary regulations, enhanced public awareness and education, cross-sectoral collaboration, and integration of scientific research into policy-making. By implementing these solutions, we can improve our ability to detect, monitor, and manage ECs, reducing environmental and public health risks.

Modification strategies for semiconductor metal oxide nanomaterials applied to chemiresistive NOx gas sensors: A review

Semiconductor metal oxides (SMOs) nanomaterials are a category of sensing materials that are widely applied to chemiresistive NOx gas sensors. However, there is much space to improve the sensing performance of SMOs nanomaterials. Therefore, how to improve the sensing performance of SMOs nanomaterials for NOx gases has always attracted the interest of researchers. Up to now, there are few reviews focus on the modification strategies of SMOs which applied to NOx gas sensors. In order to compensate for the limitation, this review summarizes the existing modification strategies of SMOs, hoping to provide researchers a view of the research progress in this filed as comprehensive as possible. This review focuses on the progress of the modification of SMOs nanomaterials for chemiresistive NOx (NO, NO2) gas sensors, including the morphology modulation of SMOs, compositing SMOs, loading noble metals, doping metal ions, compositing with carbon nanomaterials, compositing with biomass template, and compositing with MXene, MOFs, conducting polymers. The mechanism of each strategy to enhance the NOx sensing performance of SMOs-based nanomaterials is also discussed and summarized. In addition, the limitations of some of the modification strategies and ways to address them are discussed. Finally, future perspectives for SMOs-based NOx gas sensors are also discussed.

A Porphyrinic Metal-Organic Framework with Cooperative Adsorption Domains for PFAS Removal from Water

The removal of toxic poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as persistent pollutants from wastewater is imperative but challenging for water remediation. Many adsorbents including activated carbon, biochar, and clay minerals have been investigated for PFAS removal, but most of these materials are faced with high cost or/and low efficiency. The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents is attractive for efficient removal of PFAS due to their tailor-made structures and high surface areas. Herein, we synthesized, characterized a water stable Zr-based porphyrinic MOF (PCN-224) with cooperative adsorption domains, and demonstrated its excellent capture performance toward perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). PCN-224 has maximum uptake capacities of 963, 517, and 395 mg g-1 for PFOS, PFHxS, and PFBS, respectively, which are much higher than that of granular activated carbon. Moreover, coexistent anions (Cl-, SO4 2-) and humic acid have negligible effects on PFOS adsorption. The excellent adsorption performance of PCN-224 toward PFOS is due to the orthogonal cationic channel pores with a diameter of 1.9 nm, the hydrophobic porphyrin units, and the Zr6 clusters with acidic sites. PCN-224 can be readily regenerated and reused. This work highlights the potential of MOFs with multiple adsorption domains for water remediation.

Defective UiO-66-NH2 (Zr) for Simultaneous Adsorption of Phosphate and Pb2+ for Hydrogen Peroxide Purification

Removal of hetero ions from the hydrogen peroxide solution is a crucial step in purifying electronic-grade H2O2. Conventional adsorption materials are challenged to meet the need for the simultaneous adsorption of both anions and cations in solvents. UiO-66 (Zr) modified by acetic acid and amino group for simultaneous adsorption of phosphate and Pb2+ in H2O2 purification was fabricated in this work. The as-prepared defective UiO-66-NH2 (Zr) demonstrated a significant increase in specific surface area and porosity, along with more exposed sites for phosphate and Pb2+ adsorption. The adsorption capacity of De-UiO-66-NH2 for phosphate and Pb2+ in H2O2 solution was 52.28 mg g-1 and 35.4 mg g-1, which is 1.19 times and 1.88 times that of unmodified UiO-66 (Zr), respectively. The trace simultaneous adsorption with both 100 ppb phosphate and Pb2+ showed removal rates of 94.0% and 88.7%, respectively, confirming the practicality of MOF materials in the purification of electronic chemicals. This work highlights the potential of Zr-based MOFs as anionic and cationic simultaneous adsorbents for highly efficient purification of electronic-grade solvents.

Progressive Insights into Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metal-Organic Framework-Membrane Composite Systems for Wastewater Management

The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Furthermore, it focuses on the application prospects, challenges, and opportunities associated with MOF composite membranes in water treatment.

Efficient removal of microcystin-LR from contaminated water using water-stable MIL-100(Fe) synthesized under HF-free conditions

Cyanobacterial algal hepatotoxins, called microcystins (MCs), are a global health concern, necessitating research on effective removal methods from contaminated water bodies. In this study, we synthesized non-fluorine MIL-100(Fe) using an environmentally friendly room-temperature method and utilized it as an adsorbent to effectively remove microcystin-LR (MC-LR), which is the most toxic MC congener. MIL-100(Fe) was thoroughly characterized, and its adsorption process was investigated under various conditions. Results revealed rapid MC-LR adsorption, achieving 93% removal in just 5 min, with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model indicating chemisorption as the primary mechanism. The Langmuir isotherm model demonstrated a monolayer sorption capacity of 232.6 µg g-1 at room temperature, showing favorable adsorption. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity increased from 183 µg g-1 at 20 °C to 311 µg g-1 at 40 °C, indicating an endothermic process. Thermodynamic parameters supported MC-LR adsorption's spontaneous and feasible nature onto MIL-100(Fe). This study highlights MIL-100(Fe) as a promising method for effectively removing harmful biological pollutants, such as MC-LR, from contaminated water bodies in an environmentally friendly manner.

Kiwi peel waste as a recyclable adsorbent to remove textile dyes from water: Direct Blue 78 removal and recovery

According to circular bioeconomy principles, the use of kiwi peels to remove Direct Blue 78 (DB) from water is investigated during this work, proposing food waste as a recyclable adsorbent substrate. Direct Blue 78 (DB) was adopted as a model pollutant, employing its visible spectrum to monitor its adsorption. The adsorption process was thus fully characterized, investigating the roles of ionic strength, pH values, adsorbent/pollutant amounts, and temperature. The thermodynamics, kinetics, and adsorption isotherms were also studied. To extend the kiwi peels' lifetime, quite complete desorption was obtained by adopting hot water as a safe and eco-friendly strategy. Despite the relatively low kiwi peels' maximum adsorption capacity (6 mg g-1) for DB when adsorbed in the presence of NaCl, 10 cycles of adsorption/desorption were attempted, proposing the recycling of both the dye and kiwi peels as dictated by circular economy principles. Dyeing experiments were also performed, evidencing the dye's ability to color cotton fabrics after its recycling. Finally, the removal of other textile dyes, Direct Red 83 : 1 and Direct Yellow 86, was demonstrated in a mixture with DB. A preliminary investigation was performed to find the best working conditions for inducing the solid-state dye photodegradation, proposing a possible alternative for the adsorbent regeneration.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Marry Sponge: New Opportunities for Advanced Water Treatment

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered attention across various fields due to their noteworthy features like high specific surface area, substantial porosity, and adjustable performance. In the realm of water treatment, MOFs exhibit great potential for eliminating pollutants such as organics, heavy metals, and oils. Nonetheless, the inherent powder characteristics of MOFs pose challenges in terms of recycling, pipeline blockage, and even secondary pollution in practical applications. Addressing these issues, the incorporation of MOFs into sponges proves to be an effective solution. Strategies like one-pot synthesis, in situ growth, and impregnation are commonly employed for loading MOFs onto sponges. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis strategies of MOFs and sponges, along with their applications in water treatment, aiming to contribute to the ongoing advancement of MOF materials.

Uranyl uptake into metal-organic frameworks: a detailed X-ray structural analysis

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are a subclass of porous framework materials that have been used for a wide variety of applications in sensing, catalysis, and remediation. Among these myriad applications is their remarkable ability to capture substances in a variety of environments ranging from benign to extreme. Among the most common and problematic substances found throughout the world's oceans and water supplies is [UO2]2+, a common mobile ion of uranium, which is found both naturally and as a result of anthropogenic activities, leading to problematic environmental contamination. While some MOFs possess high capability for the uptake of [UO2]2+, many more of the thousands of MOFs and their modifications that have been produced over the years have yet to be studied for their ability to uptake [UO2]2+. However, studying the thousands of MOFs and their modifications presents an incredibly difficult task. As such, a way to narrow down the numbers seems imperative. Herein, we evaluate the binding behaviors as well as identify the specific binding sites of [UO2]2+ incorporated into six different Zr MOFs to elucidate specific features that improve [UO2]2+ uptake. In doing so, we also present a method for the determination and verification of these binding sites by Anomalous wide-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. This research not only presents a way for future research into the uptake of [UO2]2+ into MOFs to be conducted but also a means to evaluate MOFs more generally for the uptake of other compounds to be applied for environmental remediation and improvement of ecosystems globally.

Functionalization of Defective Zr Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Decontamination: Mechanistic Insight into the Competitive Roles of -NH2 and -SH Sites in Removal of As(III) Species

Direct removal of trivalent arsenic, As(III), arsenite, or H3AsO3, is a great challenge in accessing clean sources of water. Different methodologies and materials were applied in this regard, but among them, direct removal of As(III) species using a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbent shows a great deal of potential. Although some studies were conducted on As(III) removal using MOFs, studies of functional groups are still quite rare. For this purpose, three novel functionalized defective Zr-MOFs, using UiO-66 [Zr6(OH)4O4(BDC)6, where BDC2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate], were fabricated to investigate the competitive or cooperative roles of the free -NH2 and/or -SH site in the removal of As(III). UiO-66 was functionalized with monocarboxylate linkers, including glycine (Gly, NH2-CH2-COOH), cysteine [Cys, SH(CH2)-NH2(CH)-COOH], and mercaptopropionic acid [Mer, SH-(CH2)2-COOH]. Gly@UiO-66, Cys@UiO-66, and Mer@UiO-66 were applied for the direct removal of As(III) species. Although Cys@UiO-66 is functionalized with both amine and thiol functional groups, Gly@UiO-66 has a higher adsorption capacity (301.4 mg g-1) with respect to As(III), which is among the best reported values. This is due to the fact that (1) the affinity of amine sites in Gly@UiO-66 for As(III) is higher than that of thiol sites in Mer@UiO-66 and (2) Cys@UiO-66 has a very small surface area compared to that of Gly@UiO-66. Mechanistic studies using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and vibrational spectroscopy reveal that not only the functionalization and chemical nature of the function but also other parameters such as the protonation-deprotonation mechanisms and chemical state of the function are other critical factors for designing a functional MOF-based adsorbent with high affinity for and maximum capacity with respect to the target analyte.

Design and application of metal organic frameworks for heavy metals adsorption in water: a review

The growing apprehension surrounding heavy metal pollution in both environmental and industrial contexts has spurred extensive research into adsorption materials aimed at efficient remediation. Among these materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have risen as versatile and promising contenders due to their adjustable properties, expansive surface areas, and sustainable characteristics, compared to traditional options like activated carbon and zeolites. This exhaustive review delves into the synthesis techniques, structural diversity, and adsorption capabilities of MOFs for the effective removal of heavy metals. The article explores the evolution of MOF design and fabrication methods, highlighting pivotal parameters influencing their adsorption performance, such as pore size, surface area, and the presence of functional groups. In this perspective review, a thorough analysis of various MOFs is presented, emphasizing the crucial role of ligands and metal nodes in adapting MOF properties for heavy metal removal. Moreover, the review delves into recent advancements in MOF-based composites and hybrid materials, shedding light on their heightened adsorption capacities, recyclability, and potential for regeneration. Challenges for optimization, regeneration efficiency and minimizing costs for large-scale applications are discussed.

Recent Development of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification

Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Moreover, the outlook on future opportunities for water purification using MOFs is also provided.

Development of hybrid MIL-53(Al)@CBS for ternary adsorption of tetracyclines antibiotics in water: Physical interpretation of the adsorption mechanism

In this study, a hybrid material, MIL-53(Al)@CBS, was synthesized via the solvothermal method, involving the growth of MIL-53(Al) crystals on cocoa bean shell residues (CBS). Physicochemical characterization techniques, including TGA, BET, FTIR, XRD, and SEM, confirmed successful hybridization. MIL-53(Al)@CBS was employed as an adsorbent for antibiotics (oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline) separation from aqueous solutions. Parameters like pH, adsorbent dose, concentration, time, and temperature were systematically evaluated. FTIR revealed π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds between tetracyclines and the adsorbent. MIL-53(Al)@CBS exhibited adsorption, with removal rates up to 98.92%, 99.04%, and 98.24% for OTC, TC, and CTC, respectively. Kinetics suggested adsorption depends on active site availability, with TC adsorbing fastest. Microscopic models showed adsorption on three distinct active site types with different affinities without competition or adherence to the Langmuir hypothesis. Importantly, MIL-53(Al)@CBS maintained high adsorption capacity even after ten washing cycles, highlighting its potential for water treatment.

Nanoarchitectonics Design Strategy of Metal-Organic Framework and Bio-Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Advanced Wastewater Treatment through Adsorption

Freshwater depletion is an alarm for finding an eco-friendly solution to treat wastewater for drinking and domestic applications. Though several methods like chlorination, filtration, and coagulation-sedimentation are conventionally employed for water treatment, these methods need to be improved as they are not environmentally friendly, rely on chemicals, and are ineffective for all kinds of pollutants. These problems can be addressed by employing an alternative solution that is effective for efficient water treatment and favors commercial aspects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging porous material, possess high stability, pore size tunability, greater surface area, and active sites. These MOFs can be tailored; thus, they can be customized according to the target pollutant. Hence, MOFs can be employed as adsorbents that effectively target different pollutants. Bio-MOFs are a kind of MOFs that are incorporated with biomolecules, which also possess properties of MOFs and are used as a nontoxic adsorbent. In this review, we elaborate on the interaction between MOFs and target pollutants, the role of linkers in the adsorption of contaminants, tailoring strategy that can be employed on MOFs and Bio-MOFs to target specific pollutants, and we also highlight the effect of environmental matrices on adsorption of pollutants by MOFs.

Advancement in nanomaterials for environmental pollutants remediation: a systematic review on bibliometrics analysis, material types, synthesis pathways, and related mechanisms

Environmental pollution is a major issue that requires effective solutions. Nanomaterials (NMs) have emerged as promising candidates for pollution remediation due to their unique properties. This review paper provides a systematic analysis of the potential of NMs for environmental pollution remediation compared to conventional techniques. It elaborates on several aspects, including conventional and advanced techniques for removing pollutants, classification of NMs (organic, inorganic, and composite base). The efficiency of NMs in remediation of pollutants depends on their dispersion and retention, with each type of NM having different advantages and disadvantages. Various synthesis pathways for NMs, including traditional synthesis (chemical and physical) and biological synthesis pathways, mechanisms of reaction for pollutants removal using NMs, such as adsorption, filtration, disinfection, photocatalysis, and oxidation, also are evaluated. Additionally, this review presents suggestions for future investigation strategies to improve the efficacy of NMs in environmental remediation. The research so far provides strong evidence that NMs could effectively remove contaminants and may be valuable assets for various industrial purposes. However, further research and development are necessary to fully realize this potential, such as exploring new synthesis pathways and improving the dispersion and retention of NMs in the environment. Furthermore, there is a need to compare the efficacy of different types of NMs for remediating specific pollutants. Overall, this review highlights the immense potential of NMs for mitigating environmental pollutants and calls for more research in this direction.

MIL-53(Al)@HC nanohybrid for bicomponent adsorption of ibuprofen and metsulfuron-methyl: Application of macro- and microscopic models and competition between contaminants

In this work, a hybrid was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment, metal-organic framework functionalized with hydrochar (MIL-53(Al)@HC) for the adsorption of two organic molecules Ibuprofen sodium salt and Metsulfuron-methyl, in binary system. The hybrid is composed of 71 wt% biomass and 29 wt% MOF. TGA, BET, FTIR, XRD and XPS characterization techniques were used to verify the hybridization of MIL-53(Al)@HC. The MIL-53(Al)@HC hybrid showed in situ MIL-53(Al) crystal growth capability. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effect of pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorbate concentration, contact time and temperature effect. The results obtained under extreme conditions demonstrate that MIL-53(Al)@HC is an adsorbent capable of removing >98% of IBU and MTM in mixture at a concentration of 0.3 mM (68 ppm IBU and 115 ppm MTM). The pseudo-second order model adequately described the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium using the Sips and Freundlich models. The physico-statistical microscopic model (2-layer) corroborated the hypothesis of a multilayer adsorption proposed by the macroscopic Freundlich model. In the competition study between IBU and MTM, both antagonistic and synergistic effects were observed. In the thermodynamic study, positive values of (ΔH°) indicate that adsorption is endothermic in nature and that the dominant mechanism is physisorption. A mechanism of adsorption by hydrogen bridging and non-covalent π*-π adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate-adsorbate interactions was proposed. The desorption study shows that in 5 washing cycles MIL-53(Al)@HC is a recoverable material.

Recent advances in metal organic frameworks-based magnetic nanomaterials for waste water treatment

Magnetic nanoparticle-incorporated metal organic frameworks (MOF) are potential composites for various applications such as catalysis, water treatment, drug delivery, gas storage, chemical sensing, and heavy metal ion removal. MOFs exhibits high porosity and flexibility enabling guest species like heavy metal ions to diffuse into bulk structure. Additionally, shape and size of the pores contribute to selectivity of the guest materials. Incorporation of magnetic materials allows easy collection of adsorbent materials from solution system making the process simple and cost-effective. In view of the above advantages in the present review article, we are discussing recent advances of different magnetic material-incorporated MOF (Mg-MOF) composite for application in photocatalytic degradation of dyes and toxic chemicals, adsorption of organic compounds, adsorption of heavy metal ions, and adsorption of dyes. The review initially discusses on properties of Mg-MOF, different synthesis techniques such as mechanochemical, sonochemical (ultrasound) synthesis, slow evaporation and diffusion methods, solvo(hydro)-thermal and iono-thermal method, microwave-assisted method, microemulsion method post-synthetic modification template strategies and followed by application in waste water treatment.

Synergistic approach for synthesis of functionalized biochar for efficient adsorption of Lopinavir from polluted water

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in antibiotic consumption, along with a 70% rise in antiviral drug concentrations in aquatic ecosystems. For the effective adsorption of antibiotics, biochar was modified by incorporating layered double hydroxide (LDH) through hydrothermal method. The results showed that LDH provides additional hydroxyl groups, positive surface charges and ion exchange. Whereas biochar component provides a larger specific surface area (467.8 m2/g). Batch adsorption experiments of biochar @ layered double hydroxide (BC@LDH) showed enhanced adsorption performance (832.9 mg/g), compared to pristine LDH (420.3 mg/g) and unmodified biochar (548.5 mg/g). Adsorption data were best interpreted (R2 = 0.99) by pseudo second order, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. Adsorption was a synergism of LDH and biochar physiochemical properties, whereas pore-filling was the primary mechanism. The recyclability of BC@LDH confirmed its good structural stability. This study introduces a sustainable and efficient method for synthesizing a versatile adsorbent with superior antibiotic removal.

A Nanocavitation Approach to Understanding Water Capture, Water Release, and Framework Physical Stability in Hierarchically Porous MOFs

Chemically stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring interconnected hierarchical pores have proven to be promising for a remarkable variety of applications. Nevertheless, the framework's susceptibility to capillary-force-induced pore collapse, especially during water evacuation, has often limited practical applications. Methodologies capable of predicting the relative magnitudes of these forces as functions of the pore size, chemical composition of the pore walls, and fluid loading would be valuable for resolution of the pore collapse problem. Here, we report that a molecular simulation approach centered on evacuation-induced nanocavitation within fluids occupying MOF pores can yield the desired physical-force information. The computations can spatially pinpoint evacuation elements responsible for collapse and the chemical basis for mitigation of the collapse of modified pores. Experimental isotherms and difference-electron density measurements of the MOF NU-1000 and four chemical variants validate the computational approach and corroborate predictions regarding relative stability, anomalous sequence of pore-filling, and chemical basis for mitigation of destructive forces.

A systematic review on the current situation of emerging pollutants in Mexico: A perspective on policies, regulation, detection, and elimination in water and wastewater

Emerging pollutants (EPs) emerged as a group of new compounds whose presence in the environment has been widely detected in Mexico. In this country, different concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds, pesticides, dyes, and microplastics have been reported, which vary depending on the region and the analyzed matrix (i.e., wastewater, surface water, groundwater). The evidence of the EPs' presence focuses on the detection of them, but there is a gap in information regarding is biomonitoring and their effects in health in Mexico. The presence of these pollutants in the country associated with lack of proper regulations in the discharge and disposal of EPs. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive view of the current environmental status, policies, and frameworks regarding Mexico's situation. The review also highlights the lack of information about biomonitoring since EPs are present in water even after their treatment, leading to a critical situation, which is high exposure to humans and animals. Although, technologies to efficiently eliminate EPs are available, their application has been reported only at a laboratory scale thus far. Here, an overview of health and environmental impacts and a summary of the research works reported in Mexico from 2014 to 2023 were presented. This review concludes with a concrete point of view and perspective on the status of the EPs' research in Mexico as an alert for government entities about the necessity of measures to control the EPs disposal and treatment.

Bibliometric research analysis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs): evidence and research activity dynamics

The escalating issue of water pollution has become a worldwide issue that has captured the attention of numerous scientists. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have emerged as adaptable materials with exceptional attributes, including easy synthesis, low cost, remarkable durability, long life, and accessibility. These attributes have motivated researchers to develop novel materials based on MIPs to tackle hazardous contaminants in environmental matrices. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a bibliometric analysis on MIPs' publications, in order to shed light on the developments and focus points of the field. The selected publications were obtained from Scopus database and subjected to a filtering process, resulting in 11,131 relevant publications. The analysis revealed that the leading publication source (journal) is Biosensors and Bioelectronics; the mostly employed keywords are solid-phase extraction, electrochemical sensor, and molecular recognition; and the top contributing countries are China, Iran, and the USA. The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) algorithm was used for extracting thematic axes from the textual content of the publications. The results of the LDA model showcase that the topic of synthesis and performance of MIPs for environmental applications can be considered as the most dominant topic with a share value of 72.71%. From the analysis, it can be concluded that MIPs are a cross-disciplinary research field.

A mini review of recent progress in the removal of emerging contaminants from pharmaceutical waste using various adsorbents

The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) originating from pharmaceutical waste in water, wastewater, and marine ecosystems at various geographical locations has been clearly publicised. This review paper presents an overview of current monitoring data on the occurrences and distributions of ECs in coastal ecosystem, tap water, surface water, ground water, treated sewage effluents, and other sources. Technological advancements for EC removal are also presented, which include physical, chemical, biological, and hybrid treatments. Adsorption remains the most effective method to remove ECs from water bodies. Various types of adsorbents, such as activated carbons, biochars, nanoadsorbents (carbon nanotubes and graphene), ordered mesoporous carbons, molecular imprinting polymers, clays, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks have been extensively used for removing ECs from water sources and wastewater. Extensive findings on adsorptive performances, process efficiency, reusability properties, and other related information are thoroughly discussed in this mini review.

Two 3D Ln(III)-MOFs Based on Phosphineoxide Ligand: Synthesis, Structure Luminescent and Photocatalytic Properties

Two new 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) ZZUT1 and ZZUT2 were prepared through the reaction of tris-(4-carboxylphenyl) phosphineoxide (H3TPO) ligand with nitrate of neodymium and praseodymium by solvothermal method. The structure, fluorescence and photocatalytic properties of ZZUT1 and ZZUT2 were studied. The crystalline structure of two 3D Ln(III)-MOFs both exhibit triclinic system and P-1 space group. The results of fluorescence analysis showed that two 3D Ln(III)-MOFs could selectively recognize acetone molecule through the fluorescence quenching mechanism. Meanwhile, ZZUT1 and ZZUT2 showed good adsorption and degradation ability on organic dye methylene blue (MB) in photocatalytic condition, and the degradation efficiency can reach to more than 90%.

Significance of MOF adsorbents in uranium remediation from water

Uranium is considered as one of the most perilous radioactive contaminants in the aqueous environment. It has shown detrimental effects on both flora and fauna and because of its toxicities on human beings, therefore its exclusion from the aqueous environment is very essential. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an adsorbent for the removal of uranium from the aqueous environment could be a good approach. MOFs possess unique properties like high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, etc. This makes them promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium from contaminated water. In this paper, sources of uranium in the water environment, human health disorders, and application of the different types of MOFs as well as the mechanisms of uranium removal have been discussed meticulously.

Direct Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Sols: Advances and Perspectives

The intrinsic lack of processability in the conventional nano/microcrystalline powder form of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) greatly limits their application in various fields. Synthesis of MOFs with certain flowability make them promising for multitudinous applications. The direct synthesis strategy represents one of the simplest and efficient method for synthesizing solution processable MOF sols/suspensions, compared with other approaches, for instance, the post-synthesis surface modification, the direct dispersion of MOFs in hindered ionic liquids, as well as the calcination method toward a few MOFs with melting behavior. This article reviews the recent direct synthesis strategies of solution processable MOF sols and their typical applications in different fields. The direct synthesis strategies of MOF sols can be classified into two categories: particle size reduction strategy, and selective coordination strategy. The synthesis mechanism of different strategies and the factors affecting the formation of sols are summarized. The application of solution processable MOF sols in different fields are introduced, showing great application potentials. Furthermore, the challenges faced by the direct synthesis of MOF sols and the main methods to deal with the challenges are emphasized, and the future development trend is prospected.

Enhanced removal of organic dyes from aqueous solutions by new magnetic HKUST-1: facile strategy for synthesis

A novel, magnetic HKUST-1 MOF based on MgFe2O4-NH2 was designed and synthesized in two steps and applied effective removal of malachite green (MG), crystal violet (CV), and methylene blue (MB) from water samples. Characterization of the newly synthesized MgFe2O4-NH2-HKUST-1 was performed by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Field emission scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Thermal gravimetric analysis, and Vibration sampling magnetometry. Malachite green, crystal violet and methylene blue are toxic and mutagenic dyes that can be released into the water in different ways and cause many problems for human health and the environment. The removal of malachite green, crystal violet, and methylene blue from aqueous solutions was investigated using the magnetic HKUST-1 in this research. The effect of various parameters such as pH, amount of sorbent, dye concentration, temperature, and contact time on dye removal has been studied. The results showed that more than 75% of dyes were removed within 5 min. Adsorption isotherms, Kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were investigated. The results of this study show that adsorption capacity of the magnetic adsorbent is equal to 108.69 mg g-1 for MG, 70.42 mg g-1 for CV, and 156.25 mg g-1 for MB. This study shows the good strategy for the synthesis of the functionalized magnetic form of HKUST-1 and its capability for increasing the efficiency of the removal process of malachite green, crystal violet, and methylene blue from an aqueous solution.

Metal-organic frameworks for wastewater treatment: Recent developments, challenges, and future prospects

Wastewater treatment is critically important for the existence of life on earth; however, this approach involves the removal of toxic metal contaminants and organic pollutants, requiring efficient adsorbent materials. Within this agenda, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) appear to be potential materials due to their unique properties as efficient adsorbents, effective photocatalysts, and reliable semi-permeable membranes. Therefore, MOFs have undergone various modifications over the years without desirable success to improve adsorption capacity, hydro-stability, reaction kinetics, and reusability. Therefore, scientists around the world got engaged in MOF research for novel modifications, including defect engineering, carbonization, and membrane fabrication, at the laboratory scale. This review focuses on developing MOF-based adsorbents, photocatalysts, and semi-permeable membranes for wastewater treatment since 2015, emphasizing their structural-functional relationships. Finally, the challenges and opportunities with MOFs in wastewater treatment are also underlined for future efforts.

Rapid Trace Detection of Sulfite Residue in White Wine Using a Multichannel Colorimetric Nanozyme Sensor

As a commonly used food additive, sulfite (SO32-) is popular with food manufacturers due to the functions of bleaching, sterilizing, and oxidation resistance. However, excess sulfites can pose a threat to human health. Therefore, it is particularly important to achieve rapid and sensitive detection of SO32-. Herein, a colorimetric sensor was invented for visual, meticulous, and rapid detection of SO32- based on MIL-53(Fe/Mn). Bimetallic nanozyme MIL-53(Fe/Mn) was prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal reaction. The prepared MIL-53(Fe/Mn) can effectively catalyze the oxidation of colorless TMB to a blue oxidation product (oxTMB). The introduction of SO32- causes significant discoloration of the reaction system, gradually transitioning from a visible blue color to colorless. Hence, a sensitive colorimetric sensor for SO32- detection was developed based on the decolorization degree of the detection system. Further, the discoloration was ascribed to the inactivation of nanozyme and the strong reducing ability of SO32-. Under the optimal experimental conditions, there was a good linear relationship between the absorbance at 652 nm and SO32- concentration in the linear range of 0.5-6 μg mL-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.05 μg mL-1. The developed method was successfully applied to the detection of actual samples of white wine with good accuracy and recovery. Compared to traditional methods, this colorimetric sensor produces similar detection results but significantly reduces the detection time. Compared to traditional methods, this colorimetric sensor can not only reduce the detection costs effectively but also help the food industry maintain quality standards. Strong anti-interference capability, simple operation, and low detection limits ensure the excellent performance of the colorimetric sensor in detecting SO32- in white wine. The combination of a smartphone and a colorimetric analysis application has also greatly facilitated the semi-quantitative, visual on-site detection of SO32-, which has opened up an application prospect of an MIL-53(Fe/Mn)-based detection platform. Our work has indicated a new direction for the detection of SO32- and provided important assurance for food safety.

Th6-Based Multicomponent Heterometallic Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring 6,12-Connected Topology for Iodine Adsorption

Its high coordination number and tendency to cluster make Th4+ suitable for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with novel topologies. In this work, two novel thorium-based heterometallic MOF isomers (IHEP-17 and IHEP-18) were assembled from a Th6 cluster, a multifunctional organic ligand [4-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)benzoic acid (HPyba)], and Cu2+/Ni2+ cations via the one-pot solvothermal synthesis strategy. The framework features a 6,12-connected new topology net and contains two kinds of supramolecular cage structures, Th36M4 and Th24M2, suitable for guest exchange. Both MOF materials can efficiently adsorb I2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicate that the adsorbed iodine is uniformly distributed within the Th36M4 cage but not the Th24M2 cage in the form of I3-.

Parametric study and process modeling for metronidazole removal by rhombic dodecahedron ZIF-67 crystals

Metronidazole (MNZ) is an extensively used antibiotic against bacterial infections for humans and farm animals. Prevention of antibiotics discharge is essential to prevent adverse environmental and health impacts. A member of metal-organic frameworks, zeolite imidazole framework-67 with cobalt sulfate precursor (ZIF-67-SO4) and exceptional physio-chemical properties was prepared via room temperature precipitation to adsorb MNZ. The study framework was designed by Box-Behnken Design to evaluate the effect of pH, ZIF-67-SO4 dose, and contact time on adsorption efficiency. The polynomial model fitted the adsorption system indicated the optimal condition for 97% MNZ removal occurs at pH = 7, adsorbent dosage = 1 g/L, and mixing time = 60 min. The model also revealed that the removal increased with contact time and decreased at strong pH. Equilibrium and kinetic study also indicated the adsorption of MNZ followed the intra-particle diffusion model and the Langmuir isotherm model with a qmax = 63.03 mg/g. The insignificant loss in removal efficacy in use-reuse adsorption cycles reflected the practical viability of ZIF-67-SO4.

Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework Composites for Wastewater Remediation

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high specific surface area, tailored structure, easy functionalization, and excellent chemical stability have been extensively exploited as fantastic materials in various fields. However, in most cases, COFs prepared in powder form suffer from the disadvantages of tedious operation, strong tendency to agglomerate, and poor recyclability, greatly limiting their practical application in environmental remediation. To tackle these issues, the fabrication of magnetic COFs (MCOFs) has attracted tremendous attention. In this review, several reliable strategies for the fabrication of MCOFs are summarized. In addition, the recent application of MCOFs as outstanding adsorbents for the removal of contaminants including toxic metal ions, dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and other organic pollutants is discussed. Moreover, in-depth discussions regarding the structural parameters affecting the practical potential of MCOFs are highlighted in detail. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of MCOFs in this field are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application.

Interface synthesis of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes and their selective adsorption activity toward Congo red

Considering the surface affinity of MOFs and separation advantages of polymer membranes, herein, a one-step interface synthesis strategy is used in the construction of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, in which Cu2+ ions and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) were dissolved in ionized water and n-octanol separately, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films were laid at the interface of two immiscible solvents. As a result, Cu-BTC was generated and readily self-assembled inside the PVDF films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method were used to characterize Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, and Congo red (CR) was selected as the target dye to evaluate the surface adsorption activity of the hybrid membranes. Batch adsorption tests under various conditions were conducted to optimize the adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics, which were analyzed to further explore the adsorption behavior. Based on this, the adsorption mechanism was discussed. It is worth noting that because of the π-π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonding, an extraordinary adsorption capacity of CR was achieved, and the good separation advantage and the cyclic adsorption performances endow the resulting Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes with promising applications in the removal of organic dyes from practical wastewater.

Rapid synthesis of cerium-UiO-66 MOF nanoparticles for photocatalytic dye degradation

An unprecedented synthesis method is used to form a series of Ce-UiO-66-X (X = NH2, OH, H, NO2, COOH) metal-organic frameworks by precipitation from mixed solvents, with instantaneous crystallisation on combining separate solutions of ligands and metal precursors. This allows the first direct synthesis of Ce-UiO-66-OH. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) shows that all materials are pure phase with a broadened profile that indicates nano-scale crystallite domain size. The effect of different functional groups on the benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate linker within the UiO-66 structure has been investigated on degradation of two cationic (methylene blue and rhodamine B) and two anionic (Congo red, and Alizarin red S) dyes under UV and visible light irradiation at room temperature. Analysis of the dye adsorption in the absence of light is accounted for using pseudo-first order kinetics, and the Ce-UiO-66-NH2, Ce-UiO-66-OH, and Ce-UiO-66-H materials display a considerable photocatalytic activity to degrade Alizarin red S and Congo red rapidly between 1 and 3 minutes. The materials show excellent photostability and recyclability under UV and visible light, with no loss of crystallinity seen by PXRD and activity maintained over 5 cycles, with 16 hours photostability for Ce-UiO-66-NH2.

Buffer Effects in Zirconium-Based UiO Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) That Influence Enzyme Immobilization and Catalytic Activity in Enzyme/MOF Biocatalysts

Novel biocatalysts that feature enzymes immobilized onto solid supports have recently become a major research focus in an effort to create more sustainable and greener chemistries in catalysis. Many of these novel biocatalyst systems feature enzymes immobilized onto metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have been shown to increase enzyme activity, stability, and recyclability in industrial processes. While the strategies used for immobilizing enzymes onto MOFs can vary, the conditions always require a buffer to maintain the functionality of the enzymes during immobilization. This report brings attention to critical buffer effects important to consider when developing enzyme/MOF biocatalysts, specifically for buffering systems containing phosphate ions. A comparative analysis of different enzyme/MOF biocatalysts featuring horseradish peroxidase and/or glucose oxidase immobilized onto the MOFs UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂, and UiO-67 using a noncoordinate buffering system (MOPSO buffer) and a phosphate buffering system (PBS) show that phosphate ions can have an inhibitory effect. Previous studies utilizing phosphate buffers for enzyme immobilization onto MOFs have shown Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra that have been assigned stretching frequencies associated with enzymes after immobilization. Analyses and characterizations using zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, powder X-ray diffraction, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and FT-IR show concerning differences in enzyme loading and activity based on the buffering system used during immobilization.

Efficient removal of veterinary drugs from aqueous solutions using magnetically separable carbonaceous materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks

Rapid synthesis of carbon-based magnetic materials derived from cobalt and iron metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), ZIF-67, and MIL-100(Fe), by microwave-assisted method, followed by carbonization under a N₂ atmosphere is described in this study. The carbon-derived MOFs (CDMs) were evaluated for the removal of the emerging pollutants sulfadiazine (SDZ) and flumequine (FLU) used as veterinary drugs. The study aimed to link the adsorption behavior with their surface properties and elemental composition. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100(Fe) showed hierarchical porous structures with specific surface areas of 295.6 and 163.4 m² g^-1, respectively. The Raman spectra of the CDMs show the characteristic D and G bands associated with defect-rich carbon and sp² graphitic carbon, respectively. The CDMs exhibit cobalt species (Co₃O₄, CoO, and Co) in C-ZIF-67 and iron species (Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and Fe) in C-MIL-100 (Fe) which are related to the magnetic behavior of CDMs. C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) had saturation magnetization values of 22.9 and 53.7 emu g^-1, respectively, allowing easy solid-liquid separation using a magnet. SDZ and FLU removal rates on CDMs follow pseudo-second-order kinetics, and adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model based on regression coefficient values. Adsorption thermodynamics calculations showed that the adsorption of SDZ and FLU by CDMs was a thermodynamically favorable process. Therefore, these properties of C-ZIF-67 and C-MIL-100 (Fe) and their regeneration ability facilitate their use as adsorbents for emerging pollutants.

Novel Pyrazole-Based Transition Metal Complexes: Spectral, Photophysical, Thermal and Biological Studies

A novel bioactive Schiff base (HL) named 3-methyl-1-phenyl-5-((5-nitrosalicylidene)amino)pyrazole was prepared by condensing 5-amino-3-methyl-1-phenylpyrazole with 5-nitrosalicyldehyde in methanol on a heating mantle in refluxing condition for 1 h. Some transition metal complexes of the ligand in (1 : 1) and (1 : 2) have also been prepared by condensing the metal acetate salt with the synthesized Schiff base. The Schiff base and metal complexes were characterized by different physiochemical techniques, i. e., 1 H-NMR, InfraRed, mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis, Ultraviolet-Visible, Cyclic voltammetry, electronic spectra and Electron spin resonance. The presence of water molecules in the complexes have been calculated with the help of thermogravimetric analysis. Kinetic parameters such that entropy change, enthalpy change and activation energy have been calculated with the help of Coats-Redfern equations. Fluorescence spectra showed enhancement in the fluorescence signal of the metal complexes. Square planar geometry for the copper complexes and octahedral geometry for the other metal complexes have been proposed with help of various methods. Biological activities of all the compounds have been carried out and the results disclosed that the metal complexes have high biological activity than the Schiff base having MIC value in the range 25-3.12 μg/mL and mycelial growth inhibition 60.82-96.98 %.

Sonocrystallization of a novel ZIF/zeolite composite adsorbent with high chemical stability for removal of the pharmaceutical pollutant azithromycin from contaminated water

Water pollution management, reduction, and elimination are critical challenges of the current era that threaten millions of lives. By spreading the coronavirus in December 2019, the use of antibiotics, such as azithromycin increased. This drug was not metabolized, and entered the surface waters. ZIF-8/Zeolit composite was made by the sonochemical method. Furthermore, the effect of pH, the regeneration of adsorbents, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were attended. The adsorption capacity of zeolite, ZIF-8, and the composite ZIF-8/Zeolite were 22.37, 235.3, and 131 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbent reaches the equilibrium in 60 min, and at pH = 8. The adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic associated with increased entropy. The results of the experiment were analyzed using Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-second order kinetic models with a R2 of 0.99, and successfully removing the composite by 85% in 10 cycles. It indicated that the maximum amount of drug could be removed with a small amount of composite.

In Situ Immobilization of Multi-Enzymes for Enhanced Substrate Channeling of Enzyme Cascade Reactions: A Nanoarchitectonics Approach by Directed Metal-Organic Frameworks

Rationally tailoring a controlled spatial organization of enzymes in a nanoarchitecture for multi-enzyme cascade reactions can enhance the catalytic efficiency via substrate channeling. However, attaining substrate channeling is a grand challenge, requiring sophisticated techniques. Herein, we report facile polymer-directed metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanoarchitechtonics for realizing a desirable enzyme architecture with significantly enhanced substrate channeling. The new method involves the use of poly(acrylamide-co-diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PADD) as a modulator in a one-step process for simultaneous MOF synthesis and co-immobilization of enzymes (GOx and HRP). The resultant enzymes-PADD@MOFs constructs showed a closely packed nanoarchitecture with enhanced substrate channeling. A transient time close to 0 s was observed, owing to a short diffusion path for substrates in a 2D spindle-shaped structure and their direct transfer from one enzyme to another. This enzyme cascade reaction system showed a 3.5-fold increase in catalytic activity in comparison to free enzymes. The findings provide a new insight into using polymer-directed MOF-based enzyme nanoarchitectures to improve catalytic efficiency and selectivity.

Theoretical Study on Adsorption Behavior of SF6 Decomposition Components on Mg-MOF-74

SF₆ gas is an arc extinguishing medium that is widely used in gas insulated switchgear (GIS). When insulation failure occurs in GIS, it leads to the decomposition of SF₆ in partial discharge (PD) and other environments. The detection of the main decomposition components of SF₆ is an effective method to diagnose the type and degree of discharge fault. In this paper, Mg-MOF-74 is proposed as a gas sensing nanomaterial for detecting the main decomposition components of SF₆. The adsorption of SF₆, CF₄, CS₂, H₂S, SO₂, SO₂F₂ and SOF₂ on Mg-MOF-74 was calculated by Gaussian16 simulation software based on density functional theory. The analysis includes parameters of the adsorption process such as binding energy, charge transfer, and adsorption distance, as well as the change in bond length, bond angle, density of states, and frontier orbital of the gas molecules. The results show that Mg-MOF-74 has different degrees of adsorption for seven gases, and chemical adsorption will lead to changes in the conductivity of the system; therefore, it can be used as a gas sensing material for the preparation of SF6 decomposition component gas sensors.

Carbon nanotube-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid derived from nickel-based metal-organic framework for enhanced methyl blue adsorption

This work reports the incorporation of coordinated water into Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) which induces their structural transformation to Ni-BTC nanofibres (Ni-BTC-F). The carbonization of the Ni-BTC nanofibres at 600 °C results in the formation of carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid (labelled as Ni/C-600) with enlarged pores. In contrast, the Ni/C hybrid obtained from the carbonization of the original (unmodified) Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) at 600 °C (labelled as Ni-BTC-O-600) exhibits smaller pore size and does not show the formation of CNTs. The Ni/C-600 hybrid derived from Ni-BTC-F shows a very high adsorption capacity of 686.8 mg g^-1 toward methyl blue (MB) dye. This is approximately 4.8 times higher than the adsorption capacity of Ni-BTC-O-600 (144.1 mg g^-1). The higher adsorption performance of Ni/C-600 relative to Ni-BTC-O-600 can be attributed to its larger pore volume, hierarchical porosity, and additional adsorption sites provided by the CNTs. In addition, the Ni/C-600 hybrid can maintain 90% of its adsorption capacity after 5 consecutive cycles, demonstrating its potential as an efficient and recyclable adsorbent for MB dye.

Pyrolyzed magnetic NiO/carbon-derived nanocomposite from a hierarchical nickel-based metal-organic framework with ultrahigh adsorption capacity

Herein, a simple one-pot solvothermal approach is used to create magnetic porous carbon nanocomposites which obtained from a nickel-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) and examined for their ability to uptake methyl orange (MO) dye. Derived carbons with exceptional porosity and magnetic properties were created during the different pyrolysis temperatures of Ni-MOF (700, 800, and 900 °C) under a nitrogen atmosphere. The black powders were given the names CDM-700, CDM-800, and CDM-900 after they were obtained. A variety of analysis methods, including FESEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, VSM, and N₂ adsorption-desorption were used to characterize as-prepared powders. Furthermore, adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH variation, and initial dye concentration effects was investigated. The maximum adsorption capacities were 307.38, 5976.35, 4992.39, and 2636.54 mg/g for Ni-MOF, CDM-700, CDM-800, and CDM-900, respectively, which show the ultrahigh capacity of the resulted nanocomposites compared to newest materials. The results showed that not only the crystallinity turned but also the specific surface area was increased about four times after paralyzing. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of MO dye for CDM-700 was obtained at adsorbent dosage of 0.083 g/L, contact time of 60 min, feed pH of 3, and temperature of 45 °C. The Langmuir model has the best match and suggests the adsorption process as a single layer. According to the results of reaction kinetic studies using well-known models, the pseudo-second-order model (R² = 0.9989) displayed high agreement with the experimental data. The synthesized nanocomposite is introduced as a promising superadsorbent for eliminating dyes from contaminated water due to strong recycling performance up to the fifth cycle.

Performance of Rod-Shaped Ce Metal-Organic Frameworks for Defluoridation

The performance of a Ce(III)-4,4',4″-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) tris (azanediyl)) tribenzoic acid-organic framework (Ce-H3TATAB-MOFs) for capturing excess fluoride in aqueous solutions and its subsequent defluoridation was investigated in depth. The optimal sorption capacity was obtained with a metal/organic ligand molar ratio of 1:1. The morphological characteristics, crystalline shape, functional groups, and pore structure of the material were analyzed via SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and N₂ adsorption-desorption experiments, and the thermodynamics, kinetics, and adsorption mechanism were elucidated. The influence of pH and co-existing ions for defluoridation performance were also sought. The results show that Ce-H3TATAB-MOFs is a mesoporous material with good crystallinity, and that quasi-second kinetic and Langmuir models can describe the sorption kinetics and thermodynamics well, demonstrating that the entire sorption process is a monolayer-governed chemisorption. The Langmuir maximum sorption capacity was 129.7 mg g^-1 at 318 K (pH = 4). The adsorption mechanism involves ligand exchange, electrostatic interaction, and surface complexation. The best removal effect was reached at pH 4, and a removal effectiveness of 76.57% was obtained under strongly alkaline conditions (pH 10), indicating that the adsorbent has a wide range of applications. Ionic interference experiments showed that the presence of PO₄^3- and H₂PO₄^- in water have an inhibitory effect on defluoridation, whereas SO₄^2-, Cl^-, CO₃^2-, and NO₃^- are conducive to the adsorption of fluoride due to the ionic effect.

Constructing functional metal-organic frameworks by ligand design for environmental applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique physical and chemical properties are composed of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, including high porosity, large specific surface area, tunable structure and functionality, which have been widely used in chemical sensing, environmental remediation, and other fields. Organic ligands have a significant impact on the performance of MOFs. Selecting appropriate types, quantities and properties of ligands can well improve the overall performance of MOFs, which is one of the critical issues in the synthesis of MOFs. This article provides a comprehensive review of ligand design strategies for functional MOFs from the number of different types of organic ligands. Single-, dual- and multi-ligand design strategies are systematically presented. The latest advances of these functional MOFs in environmental applications, including pollutant sensing, pollutant separation, and pollutant degradation are further expounded. Furthermore, an outlook section of providing some insights on the future research problems and prospects of functional MOFs is highlighted with the purpose of conquering current restrictions by exploring more innovative approaches.
