Polysaccharide based metal organic frameworks (polysaccharide–MOF): A review

MIL-88-NH2(Fe) conjugated pectin through a post-modification Ugi four-component reaction: A robust bio-based catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonate via CO2 fixation reaction

The functionalization of materials via multicomponent reactions (MCRs) led to a recent surge in the interest of researchers, owing to the creation of exceptional properties in materials. Herein, a novel robust porous catalyst was prepared via the conjugation of MIL-88-NH2(Fe) and pectin (DAP/MIL-88-NH2(Fe)) through the post-modification Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi-4CR) for the first time. To achieve this aim, pectin was oxidized using sodium periodate as an oxidant agent to produce dialdehyde pectin (DAP). Next, the generated carbonyl functional groups participated in the Ugi-4CR of MIL-88-NH2(Fe), 4-methyl carboxylic acid, and cyclohexyl (c-hex) isocyanide to produce DAP/MIL-88-NH2(Fe) catalyst. The catalytic activity of the prepared bio-based catalyst was examined in producing cyclic carbonates through the chemical fixation of CO2 with epoxides in the presence of TBAB as a co-catalyst. Interestingly, catalytic experiments revealed that the prepared bio-based catalyst could be remarkably active regarding the CO2 fixation reaction and performed it in the shortest reaction time (1 h) via high CO2 adsorbent capacity. The outstanding benefits of the prepared bio-based catalyst include its non-hazardous nature, inexpensive, green and gentle reaction conditions, and ability to be reusable in several runs with slight loss of catalytic activity due to a more durable framework with high chemical and thermal stability.

Cyclodextrin-Induced Suppression of the Crystallization of Low-Molar-Mass Poly(ethylene glycol)

We examine the effect of alpha-cyclodextrin (αCD) on the crystallization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) [poly(ethylene oxide), PEO] in low-molar-mass polymers, with M w = 1000, 3000, or 6000 g mol-1. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and simultaneous synchrotron small-/wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) show that crystallization of PEG is suppressed by αCD, provided that the cyclodextrin content is sufficient. The PEG crystal structure is replaced by a hexagonal mesophase of αCD-threaded polymer chains. The αCD threading reduces the conformational flexibility of PEG and, hence, suppresses crystallization. These findings point to the use of cyclodextrin additives as a powerful means to tune the crystallization of PEG (PEO), which, in turn, will impact bulk properties including biodegradability.

In-situ forming Cu-based metal-organic framework in the presence of chitosan-Fe3O4 nanohybrids: A pH-sensitive carrier for controlled release of doxorubicin

In recent years, stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on pH, particularly those developed using bio-derived nanocomposite systems, have gained significant attention. In this work, a novel magnetic carrier was designed based on biopolymeric chitosan and metal-organic framework (MOF) for pH-controlling the release of anticancer drugs. To end this, an in-situ green method was performed to form Cu-based MOF in the presence of a magnetic polysaccharide synthesized by precipitation method toward the construction of CS/Fe3O4/Cu-MOF nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was immersed in an aqueous solution of a model anticancer drug, doxorubicin (DOX), and a higher loading capacity (90.1 ± 0.5 %) was achieved. The in-vitro drug release study showed low release rates in simulated physiological environments (pH 7.4, 37 °C, lower than about 20 %), but higher release rates in tumor tissue conditions (pH 4.5, 41 °C, higher than about 60 %) over 96 h, allowing for sustained and extended delivery of DOX. Additionally, the MTT assay demonstrated that the blank and DOX-loaded CS/Fe3O4/Cu-MOF had good cytocompatibility (over 80 % cell viability) and considerable cytotoxicity (lower than 40 % at 16 μg/mL) toward breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line, respectively. These results indicated that the synthesized nanocomposite with suitable pH-sensitivity has potential as a targeted anticancer agent.

Anisotropic Chitosan-nanocellulose/Zeolite imidazolate frameworks-8 aerogel for sustainable dye removal

Assembling microscopic metal-organic frameworks into macroscopic polymeric scaffolds to develop highly renewable materials has been a promising yet challenging area of research. Herein, chitosan (CS) blended with nano-cellulose (NC) was unidirectionally transformed into an aerogel with oriented macropores and then biomineralized with zeolite imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) to form a hierarchical structured chitosan-nanocellulose/zeolite imidazolate frameworks-8 (CS-NC-ZIF-8) hybrid aerogel. Incorporating ZIF-8 significantly increases the versatility and mechanical strength with a Young's modulus of 14.18 MPa of the CS-NC aerogel. The incorporation of ZIF-8 into the aerogel not only enhances its adsorption capacity for methylene blue, rhodamine B, acid fuchsin, and methyl orange, but also facilitates the generation of electrons from water that can be transferred to degrade > 90 % of malachite green within 90 min in each catalytic cycle, and this capability was maintained for at least 10 consecutive cycles. Remarkably, the hybrid aerogel was highly renewable after the adsorption of cationic dyes and catalytic removal of malachite green. With its facile production process, high removal efficiency, affordable and green nature, and excellent regeneration feasibility, the CS-NC-ZIF-8 aerogel stands as a promising solution for addressing challenges associated with dye-contaminated water treatment.

Drug carrier wonders: Synthetic strategies of zeolitic imidazolates frameworks (ZIFs) and their applications in drug delivery and anti-cancer activity

With the rapid advancement of nanotechnology, stimuli-responsive nanomaterials have emerged as a feasible choice for the designing of controlled drug delivery systems. Zeolitic imidazolates frameworks are a subclass of Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are recognized by their excellent porosity, structural tunability and chemical modifications make them promising materials for loading targeted molecules and therapeutics agents. The biomedical industry uses these porous materials extensively as nano-carriers in drug delivery systems. These MOFs not only possess excellent targeted imaging ability but also cause the death of tumor cells drawing considerable attention in the current framework of anticancer drug delivery systems. In this review, the outline of stability, porosity, mechanism of encapsulation and release of anticancer drug have been reported extensively. In the end, we also discuss a brief outline of current challenges and future perspectives of ZIFs in the biomedical world.

Desulfovibrio-induced gauzy FeS for efficient hexavalent chromium removal: The influence of SRB metabolism regulated by carbon source and electron carriers

Biosynthetic metal sulfides showed great application prospects in the environmental treatment against high-valence metal pollutants. However, the efficiency of biosynthesis, agglomeration during the reaction process, and the formation of the passivation layer during the reduction process were always the important factors restricting its development. This study explored the composition of the culture medium to promote the growth of highly corrosive sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and its metabolism to produce FeS nanoparticles (NPs). The results showed that reducing the carbon source (CS) and adding electron carriers in the culture medium effectively promoted the production of small, dispersed, and loose FeS NPs in cells. At pH = 7, 24 °C and 10 min reaction time, 0.1 g/L FeS NPs produced by SRB under the conditions of 10 % CS with 10 ppm cytochrome c medium could achieve 100 % removal efficiency of 1 mM hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Under this condition, FeS NPs could be produced by intracellular metabolism in SRB cells, and environmental factors such as pH, metal cations, and Cl- had little effect on the removal of Cr(VI) by this FeS NPs. The surface proteins of FeS NPs significantly enhanced their antioxidant properties. After 7 days of natural environment exposure, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency of FeS NPs was only reduced by 16 % compared with the initial sample. This work provided an in-depth understanding of Cr(VI) removal by SRB biosynthesis of FeS and contributes to the widespread application of FeS in the future.

An Atmospheric Water-Harvester with Ultrahigh Uptake-Release Efficiency at Low Humidity

Atmospheric water harvesting is a practical strategy that is achieved by removing materials from air moisture to relieve global water scarcity. Here we design a water-harvester (i.e., MOF-303/thiolated polymer composite (MTC)) by using a metal-organic framework (MOF-303) and thiolated chitosan (TC) skeleton. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding between TC and MOF-303 facilitates porous structures with enlarged air-polymer interfaces for long cycling life and high capacity at low relative humidity. Benefiting from synergetic effects on porosity and anchorage for accelerating the uptake-release of moisture, MTC exhibits a rapid water uptake capacity of 0.135 g/g in 60 min under 12.5 RH% and ultrafast water desorption kinetics of 0.003 g/g/min at 8.5 RH%, which is superior to the as-reported MOF-303 based adsorbents. At low heat (∼40 °C), the water desorption and collection rate, respectively, are 0.0195 and 0.0168 g/g/min within 210 min, showing ultrahigh harvesting efficiency. These results highlight the enormous potential as promising materials for solving the world's water scarcity crisis. This study offers an insight into the design of AWH materials, which can be extended into applications in some realms, e.g., freshwater development for industry in arid areas, water engineering-related devices and systems, etc.

Synthesis of fenugreek gum-based metal-organic framework (FG/Zr-AIPA MOF) composite beads for sequestration of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a prominent class of materials due to their large surface area and customized structures. This gives them specificity and high adsorption capacity while they lack mechanical strength and reusability. Integrating MOFs with polysaccharide matrix may retain MOF characteristics along with imparting structural integrity. In the present study, zirconium MOF-based fenugreek composite (FG/Zr-AIPA) beads were synthesised by a single droplet method and utilised for removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III) from aqueous solution. The structure, morphology and composition of beads were evaluated by FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, FESEM, EDX, XPS and zeta potential analysis. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics and thermodynamics were studied for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III) adsorption. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm study revealed that all the metal ions were adsorbed through a monolayer chemisorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity was 344.43, 270.02 and 223.21 mg g-1 for Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III), respectively, based on the Langmuir isotherm study. The thermodynamics study revealed that the interaction between the metal ions and the composite beads was spontaneous and endothermic. The FG/Zr-AIPA composite beads exhibited good reusability for the removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II) and Fe(III). The results open new possibilities for the preparation of polysaccharide MOF-based composite beads which exhibit substantial potential for water treatment applications.

Nanostructured, Biodoping-Activated Fungi-Modified Wood for Enhanced Cd2+ Removal: Performances and Insight on Adsorption Mechanisms

Nanostructured activated carbon (AC) adsorbents derived from woody biomass have garnered attention for their potential usage to remove toxic substances from the environment due to their high specific surface area, superior micro/mesoporosity, and tunable surface chemistry profile. However, chemical dopants widely used to enhance the chemical reactivity with heavy metals would pollute the environment and conflict with the vision of a cleaner and sustainable environment. Herein, we report a facile, green, and sustainable approach using fungi modification combined with alkali activation to produce AC for heavy metal removal. The decayed wood-derived AC (DAC) exhibited a high specific surface area of 2098 m2/g, and the content of O and N functional groups was 18 and 2.24%, respectively. It showed remarkable adsorption capacity toward Cd2+ of 148.7 mg/g, which was much higher than most reported Cd2+ adsorbents. Such excellent adsorption capacity was primarily based on enhanced physical adsorption (pore filling, π-π) and chemical adsorption (functional group complexation, ion exchange, and precipitation). Additionally, the DAC showed rapid kinetics and remarkable applicability in both dynamic environments and actual water samples. These results suggest that decayed wood has excellent potential for efficient use in the removal of Cd2+ from wastewater. Furthermore, these results indicate that decayed wood can be cleanly produced into high efficiency heavy metal adsorbents to realize value-added utilization of decayed wood.

Synergistic applications of cyclodextrin-based systems and metal-organic frameworks in transdermal drug delivery for skin cancer therapy

This review article explores the innovative field of eco-friendly cyclodextrin-based coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for transdermal drug delivery in the case of skin cancer therapy. We critically examine the significant advancements in developing these nanocarriers, with a focus on their unique properties such as biocompatibility, targeted drug release, and enhanced skin permeability. These attributes are instrumental in addressing the limitations inherent in traditional skin cancer treatments and represent a paradigm shift towards more effective and patient-friendly therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges faced in optimizing the synthesis process for large-scale production while ensuring environmental sustainability. The review also emphasizes the immense potential for clinical applications of these nanocarriers in skin cancer therapy, highlighting their role in facilitating targeted, controlled drug release which minimizes systemic side effects. Future clinical applications could see these nanocarriers being customized to individual patient profiles, potentially revolutionizing personalized medicine in oncology. With further research and clinical trials, these nanocarriers hold the promise of transforming the landscape of skin cancer treatment. With this study, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research in this field and outline future directions for advancing the development and clinical application of these innovative nanocarriers.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized k-carrageenan/Cr-based metal-organic framework: An efficient and recyclable catalyst for fructose conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

A novel bio-based catalyst was developed by in-situ forming Chromium(III) (Cr)-based metal-organic framework, MIL-101(Cr), in the presence of k-carrageenan (k-Car) and followed by a post-synthetic modification to introduce additional -SO3H functional groups into the composite structure of k-Car/MIL-101(Cr). Different analyses were conducted to confirm the successful catalyst formation. The catalyst performance was evaluated in the solid acid catalyzed dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The Response Surface Method (RSM) optimization determined that employing 33 wt% of the catalyst at 105 °C for 40 min resulted in a remarkable 97.8 % yield. The catalyst demonstrated suitable recyclability, maintaining its catalytic efficiency over four cycles. Comparative studies with k-Car and the non-sulfonated composite highlighted the superior activity of the catalyst, emphasizing the synergy between the k-Car, MIL-101(Cr) and the influence of -SO3H post-functionalizing on the catalytic performance.

Biomimetic construction of environmental-tolerant composite hydrogels based on galactomannan for tough, flexible and conductive sensors

Sustainable composite hydrogel materials with harsh environmental adaption and tolerance capability have received considerable interests but still remain as challenges. In this work, biomimetic strategy was adapted for construction of three-dimensional galactomannan (GM) hydrogels with intercalation of flexible polymer chains polyethyleneimine (PEI), biomacromolecules tannin acid (TA) and CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The hydrogels cross-linked with double-networks (DN) present not only pH-responsive water absorption property, but also boosted mechanical strength with highest toughness of 326 kJ/m3 and Young's modulus of 220 kPa. Self-healing and anti-freezing capabilities were revealed for the hydrogels by maintaining of fracture elongation (23 %) and fracture strength (250 kPa). TA, CeO2 NPs as well as the amide groups in PEI of the hydrogels introduced excellent bacterial prohibition performance on both Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Also, due to the existence of the free ions, the hydrogels exhibited electric conductive properties, with wide-range high sensitivity and long-time conductive stability. In addition, various tensile strain degrees were related to the conductive resistance values, and the great recovery performance was proved by cyclic tensile-conductive tests for 3000 times. Therefore, the proposed GM-based hydrogels displayed great potentials as strain sensors that are adaptable and tolerant to various environmental conditions.

CD-MOFs: From preparation to drug delivery and therapeutic application

Cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) show considerable advantages of edibility, degradability, low toxicity, and high drug loading, which have attracted enormous interest, especially in drug delivery. This review summarizes the typical synthesis approaches of CD-MOFs, the drug loading methods, and the mechanism of encapsulation and release. The influence of the structure of CD-MOFs on their drug encapsulation and release is highlighted. Finally, the challenges CD-MOFs face are discussed regarding biosafety assessment systems, stability in aqueous solution, and metal ion effect.

Polysaccharides from exudate gums of plants and interactions with the intestinal microbiota: A review of vegetal biopolymers and prediction of their prebiotic potential

Polysaccharides in plant-exuded gums are complex biopolymers consisting of a wide range of structural variability (linkages, monosaccharide composition, substituents, conformation, chain length and branching). The structural features of polysaccharides confer the ability to be exploited in different industrial sectors and applications involving biological systems. Moreover, these characteristics are attributed to a direct relationship in the process of polysaccharide enzymatic degradation by the fermentative action in the gut microbiota, through intrinsic interactions connecting bacterial metabolism and the production of various metabolites that are associated with regulatory effects on the host homeostasis system. Molecular docking analysis between bacterial target proteins and arabinogalactan-type polysaccharide obtained from gum arabic allowed the identification of intermolecular interactions provided bacterial enzymatic mechanism for the degradation of several arabinogalactan monosaccharide chains, as a model for the study and prediction of potential fermentable polysaccharide. This review discusses the main structural characteristics of polysaccharides from exudate gums of plants and their interactions with the intestinal microbiota.

Trajectory in biological metal-organic frameworks: Biosensing and sustainable strategies-perspectives and challenges

The ligand attribute of biomolecules to form coordination bonds with metal ions led to the discovery of a novel class of materials called biomolecule-associated metal-organic frameworks (Bio-MOFs). These biomolecules coordinate in multiple ways and provide versatile applications. Far-spread bio-ligands include nucleobases, amino acids, peptides, cyclodextrins, saccharides, porphyrins/metalloporphyrin, proteins, etc. Low-toxicity, self-assembly, stability, designable and selectable porous size, the existence of rigid and flexible forms, bio-compatibility, and synergistic interactions between metal ions have led Bio-MOFs to be commercialized in industries such as sensors, food, pharma, and eco-sensing. The rapid growth and commercialization are stunted by absolute bio-compatibility issues, bulk morphology that makes it rigid to alter shape/porosity, longer reaction times, and inadequate research. This review elucidates the structural vitality, biocompatibility issues, and vital sensing applications, including challenges for incorporating bio-ligands into MOF. Critical innovations in Bio-MOFs' applicative spectrum, including sustainable food packaging, biosensing, insulin and phosphoprotein detection, gas sensing, CO2 capture, pesticide carriers, toxicant adsorptions, etc., have been elucidated. Emphasis is placed on biosensing and biomedical applications with biomimetic catalysis and sensitive sensor designing.

An application of carbohydrate polymers-based surface-modified gold nanoparticles for improved target delivery to liver cancer therapy - A systemic review

Gold nanoparticles have been broadly investigated as cancer diagnostic and therapeutic agents. Gold nanoparticles are a favorable drug delivery vehicle with their unique subcellular size and good biocompatibility. Chitosan, agarose, fucoidan, porphyran, carrageenan, ulvan and alginate are all examples of biologically active macromolecules. Since they are biocompatible, biodegradable, and irritant-free, they find extensive application in biomedical and macromolecules. The versatility of these compounds is enhanced because they are amenable to modification by functional groups like sulfation, acetylation, and carboxylation. In an eco-friendly preparation process, the biocompatibility and targeting of GNPs can be improved by functionalizing them with polysaccharides. This article provides an update on using carbohydrate-based GNPs in liver cancer treatment, imaging, and drug administration. Selective surface modification of several carbohydrate types and further biological uses of GNPs are focused on.

Never-Ending Story: New Cyclodextrin-Based Metal-Organic Framework Crystal Structures Obtained Using Different Crystallization Methods

Six novel cyclodextrin (CD)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized using distinct crystallization methodologies. A modified vapor diffusion method is introduced for the first time, termed fast crystallization, which enables the rapid solid-state formation of MOF compounds. This innovative method yielded four of the newly synthesized MOFs. The crystal structures of five obtained frameworks were structurally characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while one, compound 5 (γ-CD-K-5), was additionally characterized as a bulk powder. Structural analysis revealed that two of the newly obtained MOFs, namely, compound 2 (α-CD-K-2) and compound 3 (α-CD-Rb-3), exhibited isostructural characteristics, forming a three-dimensional (3D) framework. Compound 1 (α-CD-K-1) shared the same space group as EVEGET (α-CD-K) and displayed the same framework type. Furthermore, the crystal packing of compound 4 (β-CD-K-4) closely resembled that of compound 1 and EVEGET, with the only distinction lying in the type of CD employed. Notably, compound 6 (γ-CD-K-6) incorporated an iodine ion with an occupancy of 0.2. To discern the intermolecular interactions within the obtained MOFs, the Hirshfeld surface was calculated using Crystal Explorer software.

The green synthesis and applications of biological metal-organic frameworks for targeted drug delivery and tumor treatments

Biological metal-organic frameworks (bio-MOFs) constitute a growing subclass of MOFs composed of metals and bio-ligands derived from biology, such as nucleobases, peptides, saccharides, and amino acids. Bio-ligands are more abundant than other traditional organic ligands, providing multiple coordination sites for MOFs. However, bio-MOFs are typically prepared using hazardous or harmful solvents or reagents, as well as laborious processes that do not conform to environmentally friendly standards. To improve biocompatibility and biosafety, eco-friendly synthesis and functionalization techniques should be employed with mild conditions and safer materials, aiming to reduce or avoid the use of toxic and hazardous chemical agents. Recently, bio-MOF applications have gained importance in some research areas, including imaging, tumor therapy, and targeted drug delivery, owing to their flexibility, low steric hindrances, low toxicity, remarkable biocompatibility, surface property refining, and degradability. This has led to an exponential increase in research on these materials. This paper provides a comprehensive review of updated strategies for the synthesis of environmentally friendly bio-MOFs, as well as an examination of the current progress and accomplishments in green-synthesized bio-MOFs for drug delivery aims and tumor treatments. In conclusion, we consider the challenges of applying bio-MOFs for biomedical applications and clarify the possible research orientation that can lead to highly efficient therapeutic outcomes.

Multi-functional nanocellulose based nanocomposites for biodegradable food packaging: Hybridization, fabrication, key properties and application

Nowadays, non-degradable plastic packaging materials have caused serious environmental pollution, posing a threat to human health and development. Renewable eco-friendly nanocellulose hybrid (NCs-hybrid) composites as an ideal alternative to petroleum-based plastic food packaging have been extensively reported in recent years. NCs-hybrids include metal, metal oxides, organic frameworks (MOFs), plants, and active compounds. However, no review systematically summarizes the preparation, processing, and multi-functional applications of NCs-hybrid composites. In this review, the design and hybridization of various NCs-hybrids, the processing of multi-scale nanocomposites, and their key properties in food packaging applications were systematically explored for the first time. Moreover, the synergistic effects of various NCs-hybrids on several properties of composites, including mechanical, thermal, UV shielding, waterproofing, barrier, antimicrobial, antioxidant, biodegradation and sensing were reviewed in detailed. Then, the problems and advances in research on renewable NCs-hybrid composites are suggested for biodegradable food packaging applications. Finally, a future packaging material is proposed by using NCs-hybrids as nanofillers and endowing them with various properties, which are denoted as "PACKAGE" and characterized by "Property, Application, Cellulose, Keen, Antipollution, Green, Easy."

Enhancing the Photocatalytic Activity of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Through the Formation of Mixed-Valence Centers

Despite the desirability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous photocatalysts, current strategies available to enhance the performance of MOF photocatalysts are complicated and expensive. Herein, a simple strategy is presented for improving the activity of MOF photocatalysts by regulating the atomic interface structure of the metal active sites on the MOF. In this study, MOF (PCN-222) is hybridized with cellulose acetate (CA@PCN-222) through an optimized atomic interface strategy, which lowers the average valence state of Zr ions. The electronic metal-support interaction mechanism of CA@PCN-222 is revealed by evaluating the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR). The experimental results suggested that the electron migration efficiency at the atomic interface of the MOFs strongly coupled with cellulose is significantly improved. In particular, the CO2 RR to formate activity of CA@PCN-222 photocatalyst greatly increased from 778.2 to 2816.0 µmol g-1 compared with pristine PCN-222 without cellulose acetate. The findings suggest that the strongly coupled metal-ligand moiety at the atomic interface of MOFs may play a synergistic role in heterogeneous catalysts.

Pillararene incorporated metal-organic frameworks for supramolecular recognition and selective separation

Crystalline frameworks containing incorporated flexible macrocycle units can afford new opportunities in molecular recognition and selective separation. However, such functionalized frameworks are difficult to prepare and challenging to characterize due to the flexible nature of macrocycles, which limits the development of macrocycle-based crystalline frameworks. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a set of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing pillar[5]arene units. The pillar[5]arene units were uniformly embedded in the periodic frameworks. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed an interpenetrated network that appears to hinder the rotation of the pillar[5]arene repeating units in the frameworks, and it therefore resulted in the successful determination of the precise pillar[5]arene host structure in a MOF crystal. These MOFs can recognize paraquat and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene in solution and selectively remove trace pyridine from toluene with relative ease. The work presented here represents a critical step towards the synthesis of macrocycle-incorporated crystalline frameworks with well-defined structures and functional utility.

Recent Developments in Two-Dimensional Materials-Based Membranes for Oil-Water Separation

The industrialization witnessed in the last century has resulted in an unprecedented increase in water pollution. In particular, the water pollution induced by oil contaminants from oil spill accidents, as well as discharges from pharmaceutical, oil/gas, and metal processing industries, have raised concerns due to their potential to pose irreversible threats to the ecosystems. Therefore, the effective treating of these large volumes of oily wastewater is an inevitable challenge to address. Separating oil-water mixtures by membranes has been an attractive technology due to the high oil removal efficiency and low energy consumption. However, conventional oil-water separation membranes may not meet the complex requirements for the sustainable treatment of wastewater due to their relatively shorter life cycle, lower chemical and thermal stability, and permeability/selectivity trade-off. Recent advancements in two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided opportunities to address these challenges. In this article, we provide a brief review of the most recent advancements in oil-water separation membranes modified with 2D materials, with a focus on MXenes, graphenes, metal-organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. The review briefly covers the backgrounds, concepts, fabrication methods, and the most recent representative studies. Finally, the review concludes by describing the challenges and future research directions.

Eco-Friendly Approach for the Construction of Superhydrophobic Coating on Stainless Steel Metal Based on Biological Metal-Organic Framework and Its Corrosion Resistance Performance

In this paper, we present a sustainable approach for the creation of superhydrophobic (SP) coating on a stainless-steel substrate based on a biological metal-organic framework (MOF). The MOF was synthesized using aspartic acid as a linker and copper ions as a core metal. Two SP coatings were well constructed on stainless steel utilizing electrodeposition of nickel (Ni) and nickel altered by MOF (Ni@Bio-MOF) coatings followed by soaking in a solution of stearic acid in ethanol. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that the stearic acid-grafted nickel coating (Ni@SA) and the stearic acid-grafted Ni@Bio-MOF composite (Ni@Bio-MOF@SA), were effectively deposited on the stainless steel. The wettability findings displayed that the water contact angle of Ni@SA and Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA are 160° ± 1.1°, and 168° ± 1.2°, respectively. The prepared SP coating was also found to be chemically and mechanically stable. The results show that the Ni@SA coating maintains SP characteristics in a pH range of 3-11 while the Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA coating retained SP characteristics in a pH range of 1-13. Additionally, the superhydrophobic Ni@SA coating demonstrated SP characteristics up to a length of abrasion equal to 1300 mm, while the Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA coating exhibited SP characteristics up to a length of abrasion equal to 2700 mm. Furthermore, the Ni@SA and Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA coatings exhibited significantly improved corrosion protection in a 0.5 M NaCl solution compared with bare stainless steel, with protection efficiencies of approximately 94% and 99%, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed approach is a promising method for the fabrication of eco-friendly and corrosion-resistant SP coatings on stainless steel substrate.

Polysaccharide-Based Stimulus-Responsive Nanomedicines for Combination Cancer Immunotherapy

Cancer immunotherapy is a promising antitumor approach, whereas nontherapeutic side effects, tumor microenvironment (TME) intricacy, and low tumor immunogenicity limit its therapeutic efficacy. In recent years, combination immunotherapy with other therapies has been proven to considerably increase antitumor efficacy. However, achieving codelivery of the drugs to the tumor site remains a major challenge. Stimulus-responsive nanodelivery systems show controlled drug delivery and precise drug release. Polysaccharides, a family of potential biomaterials, are widely used in the development of stimulus-responsive nanomedicines due to their unique physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, and modifiability. Here, the antitumor activity of polysaccharides and several combined immunotherapy strategies (e.g., immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, or photothermal therapy) are summarized. More importantly, the recent progress of polysaccharide-based stimulus-responsive nanomedicines for combination cancer immunotherapy is discussed, with the focus on construction of nanomedicine, targeted delivery, drug release, and enhanced antitumor effects. Finally, the limitations and application prospects of this new field are discussed.

Design and development of novel magnetic Lentinan/PVA nanocomposite for removal of diazinon, malathion, and diclofenac contaminants

Increasing population growth and rapid expansion of the industrialization of the world society have caused severe environmental pollution to the planet. This study was carried out in order to investigate the synthesis of biopolymeric texture nano adsorbent based on the Lentinan (LENT), Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) and Iron Oxide nanoparticles for the removal of environmental pollutants. The spherical structural morphology of Fe₃O₄@LENT/PVA nanocomposite has been determined by FE-SEM analyses. According to the obtained results from FTIR analyses, all absorption bands of the Fe₃O₄, LENT, and PVA, had been existed in nanocomposite and approved the successful formation of it. From EDS analysis, it has been revealed that 57.21 wt% Fe, 17.56 wt% C and 25.23 wt% O. Also, the XRD pattern of the nanocomposite, approved the presence of polymeric and magnetic parts with card no. JCPDS, 01-075-0033. The BET analysis has defined specific surface area (47 m²/g) and total pore volume (0.15 cm³/g). Moreover, high heterogeneity and structural stability of the fabricated Fe₃O₄@LENT/PVA nanocomposite have been proven by TGA. Besides, VSM analysis measured great magnetic property of the nanocomposite (48 emu/g). Also, the Fe₃O₄@LENT/PVA nanocomposite potential for effective removal of malathion (MA), Diazinon (DA), and Diclofenac (DF) from watery solution has studied by an experiment based on the efficacy of adsorbent dosage, pH, and temperature. The adsorption kinetics of three pollutants had investigated using pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO) and intra-particle diffusion (IPD) velocity equations, the results showed that the kinetics followed PSO velocity equations. Also, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubbin-Radushkevich (D-R) and Temkin isotherm models had investigated, and the adsorption isotherm was adopted from the Langmuir model. The results demonstrated that in the presence of Fe₃O₄@LENT/PVA nanocomposite, at the optimal conditions (contact time = 180 min, pH = 5, nanocomposite dosage = 0.20 g/L and temperature of 298 K) the maximum adsorption capacity of MA, DF, and DA were 101.57, 153.28, and 102.75 mg/g, respectively. The antibacterial features of the Fe₃O₄@LENT/PVA nanocomposite, had evaluated by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria, but the result did not show any antibacterial activity.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of MIL-88(Fe) conjugated starch-Fe3O4 nanocomposite: A safe antibacterial carrier for controlled release of tetracycline

A constructing antibiotic carrier with a sustained release profile is a promising method to stop long-term bacterial infection, which is of ideal interest in different biomedical fields. To end this, the present study aims to design a novel carrier based on the modification of biopolymeric starch for the rising possible interaction between carrier and antibiotic agent. We established an in-situ ultrasound-assisted method was applied to grow and create MIL-88(Fe) framework in the structure of magnetic polysaccharide (i.e., St/Fe₃O₄) synthesized by precipitation method resulting in St/Fe₃O₄/MIL-88(Fe) nanocomposite. It was loaded with a high amount of Tetracycline (TC) through its immersion into the TC aqueous solution. The release profile of TC-loaded St/Fe₃O₄/MIL-88(Fe) displays a lower initial burst release (about 26 % after 12 h) and followed by a controlled and sustained release (about 73 % up to 168 h) in the simulated physiological environment at pH 7.4. The in vitro cytotoxicity showed good cytocompatibility against Human skin fibroblast (HFF-1) cells. TC-loaded St/Fe₃O₄/MIL-88(Fe) showed higher antibacterial activity against both S. aureus and E. coli with the MIC value of 64 and 128 μg·mL^-1, respectively.

Cyclodextrin-metal-organic frameworks in molecular delivery, detection, separation, and capture: An updated critical review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are coordination compounds with tuneable structures and controllable functions. However, the biological toxicity of traditional MOFs materials is often inevitable, making their application in the biological field have many limitations. Therefore, frontier research increasingly focuses on developing biocompatible MOFs materials. Cyclodextrins (CDs), derived from starch, are favored by various biomaterials due to their good biosafety and are often seen in the preparation and application of MOFs materials. This review describes the features of MOFs materials, and the various preparation methods of CD-MOFs are analyzed in detail from the perspective of CD classification. Additionally, the promising applications of CD-MOFs materials for delivery, detection, separation, and capture of active molecules in recent studies are systematically discussed and summarized. In terms of safety, the CD-MOFs materials are meticulously summarized. Finally, this review presents the challenges and future prospects regarding the current CD-MOFs-based materials, which will shed new light on the application of such materials in various fields.

Multifunctional Nanoparticles and Nanopesticides in Agricultural Application

The unscientific application of pesticides can easily cause a series of ecological environmental safety issues, which seriously restrict the sustainable development of modern agriculture. The great progress in nanotechnology has allowed the continuous development of plant protection strategies. The nanonization and delivery of pesticides offer many advantages, including their greater absorption and conduction by plants, improved efficacy, reduced dosage, delayed resistance, reduced residues, and protection from natural enemies and beneficial insects. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in multifunctional nanoparticles and nanopesticides. The definition of nanopesticides, the types of nanoparticles used in agriculture and their specific synergistic mechanisms are introduced, their safety is evaluated, and their future application prospects, about which the public is concerned, are examined.

Direct synthesis of amorphous coordination polymers and metal–organic frameworks

Coordination polymers (CPs) and their subset, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can have porous structures and hybrid physicochemical properties that are useful for diverse applications. Although crystalline CPs and MOFs have received the most attention to date, their amorphous states are of growing interest as they can be directly synthesized under mild conditions. Directly synthesized amorphous CPs (aCPs) can be constructed from a wider range of metals and ligands than their crystalline and crystal-derived counterparts and demonstrate numerous unique material properties, such as higher mechanical robustness, increased stability and greater processability. This Review examines methods for the direct synthesis of aCPs and amorphous MOFs, as well as their properties and characterization routes, and offers a perspective on the opportunities for the widespread adoption of directly synthesized aCPs.

Collaboration of two-star nanomaterials: The applications of nanocellulose-based metal organic frameworks composites

Nanocellulose, as the star nanomaterial in carbohydrate polymers, has excellent mechanical properties, biodegradability, and easy chemical modification. However, further practical applications of nanocellulose are limited by their inadequate functionalization. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as the star nanomaterial in functional polymers, have a large surface area, high porosity, and adjustable structure. The collaboration of nanocellulose and MOFs is a desirable strategy to make composites especially interesting for multifunctional and multi-field applications. What sparks will be produced by the collaboration of two-star nanomaterials? In this review article, we highlight an up-to-date overview of nanocellulose-based MOFs composites. The sewage treatment, gas separation, energy storage, and biomedical applications are mainly summarized. Finally, the challenges and research trends of nanocellulose-based MOFs composites are prospected. We hope this review may provide a valuable reference for the development and applications of carbohydrate polymer composites soon.

Overview on recent advances of magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites in removal of heavy metals from aqueous system

Developing a novel, simple, and cost-effective analytical technique with high enrichment capacity and selectivity is crucial for environmental monitoring and remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous coordination polymers that are self-assembly synthesized from organic linkers and inorganic metal ions/metal clusters. Magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites are promising candidate among the new-generation sorbent materials available for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of environmental contaminants due to their superparamagnetism properties, high crystallinity, permanent porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adaptable pore shape/sizes, tunable functionality, designable framework topology, rapid and ultrahigh adsorption capacity, and reusability. In this review, we focus on recent scientific progress in the removal of heavy metal ions present in contaminated aquatic system by using MMOF composites. Different types of MMOFs, their synthetic approaches, and various properties that are harnessed for removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated water are discussed briefly. Adsorption mechanisms involved, adsorption capacity, and regeneration of the MMOF sorbents as well as recovery of heavy metal ions adsorbed that are reported in the last ten years have been discussed in this review. Moreover, particular prospects, challenges, and opportunities in future development of MMOFs towards their greener synthetic approaches for their practical industrial applications have critically been considered in this review.

Copper (II) Species with Improved Anti-Melanoma and Antibacterial Activity by Inclusion in β-Cyclodextrin

To improve their biological activity, complexes [Cu(bipy)(dmtp)₂(OH₂)](ClO₄)₂·dmtp (1) and [Cu(phen)(dmtp)₂(OH₂)](ClO₄)₂·dmtp (2) (bipy 2,2'-bipyridine, phen: 1,10-phenantroline, and dmtp: 5,7-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidine) were included in β-cyclodextrins (β-CD). During the inclusion, the co-crystalized dmtp molecule was lost, and UV-Vis spectra together with the docking studies indicated the synthesis of new materials with 1:1 and 1:2 molar ratios between complexes and β-CD. The association between Cu(II) compounds and β-CD has been proven by the identification of the components' patterns in the IR spectra and powder XRD diffractograms, while solid-state UV-Vis and EPR spectra analysis highlighted a slight modification of the square-pyramidal stereochemistry around Cu(II) in comparison with precursors. The inclusion species are stable in solution and exhibit the ability to scavenge or trap ROS species (O₂·^- and HO·) as indicated by the EPR experiments. Moreover, the two inclusion species exhibit anti-proliferative activity against murine melanoma B16 cells, which has been more significant for (2)@β-CD in comparison with (2). This behavior is associated with a cell cycle arrest in the G0/G1 phase. Compared with precursors, (1a)@β-CD and (2a)@β-CD exhibit 17 and 26 times more intense activity against planktonic Escherichia coli, respectively, while (2a)@β-CD is 3 times more active against the Staphylococcus aureus strain.

ROS-scavenging biomaterials for periodontitis

Periodontitis is defined as a chronic inflammatory disease in which the continuous activation of oxidative stress surpasses the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity of the endogenous antioxidative defense system. Studies have demonstrated that ROS-scavenging biomaterials should be promising candidates for periodontitis therapy. To benefit the understanding and design of scavenging biomaterials for periodontitis, this review details the relationship between ROS and periodontitis, including direct and indirect damage, the application of ROS-scavenging biomaterials in periodontitis, including organic and inorganic ROS-scavenging biomaterials, and the various dosage forms of fabricated materials currently used for periodontal therapy. Finally, the current situation and further prospects of ROS-scavenging biomaterials in periodontal applications are summarized. Expecting that improved ROS-scavenging biomaterials could be better designed and developed for periodontal and even clinical application.

Synthesis and potential applications of cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks: a review

Metal-organic frameworks are porous polymeric materials formed by linking metal ions with organic bridging ligands. Metal-organic frameworks are used as sensors, catalysts for organic transformations, biomass conversion, photovoltaics, electrochemical applications, gas storage and separation, and photocatalysis. Nonetheless, many actual metal-organic frameworks present limitations such as toxicity of preparation reagents and components, which make frameworks unusable for food and pharmaceutical applications. Here, we review the structure, synthesis and properties of cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks that could be used in bioapplications. Synthetic methods include vapor diffusion, microwave-assisted, hydro/solvothermal, and ultrasound techniques. The vapor diffusion method can produce cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework crystals with particle sizes ranging from 200 nm to 400 μm. Applications comprise food packaging, drug delivery, sensors, adsorbents, gas separation, and membranes. Cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks showed loading efficacy of the bioactive compounds ranging from 3.29 to 97.80%.

Marine macroalgae polysaccharides-based nanomaterials: an overview with respect to nanoscience applications

Exploration of marine macroalgae poly-saccharide-based nanomaterials is emerging in the nanotechnology field, such as wound dressing, water treatment, environmental engineering, biosensor, and food technology.

In this article, the current innovation and encroachments of marine macroalgae polysaccharide-based nanoparticles (NPs), and their promising opportunities, for future prospect in different industries are briefly reviewed. The extraction and advancement of various natural sources from marine polysaccharides, including carrageenan, agarose, fucoidan, and ulvan, are highlighted in order to provide a wide range of impacts on the nanofood technology. Further, seaweed or marine macroalgae is an unexploited natural source of polysaccharides, which involves numerous different phytonutrients in the outermost layer of the cell and is rich in sulphated polysaccharides (SP), SP-based nanomaterial which has an enhanced potential value in the nanotechnology field.

Conclusion

At the end of this article, the promising prospect of SP-based NPs and their applications in the food sector is briefly addressed.

Tailoring activation of CoNiO nanoparticles/porous carbon nanofibers by atomic doping for high performance supercapacitors

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are rich in active sites and have a high specific surface area, which make them potential electrode materials. In this work, a simple immersion method combined with a carbonization treatment process is applied to prepare MOF derived composite materials (CoNiO/PCNFs). Among them, cobalt-based MOFs (Co-MOFs) are selected as the precursor and doped with Ni atoms, and the ratio of Co and Ni is tailored to acquire a high-performance electrode. The electrochemical results show that when the ratio of Co to Ni is 2 : 2, the prepared CoNiO/PCNFs-2 electrode has high capacitance (912.4 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1) and superior rate capability (retention is above 50% at 100 A g^-1). Additionally, it is highly stable at 20 A g^-1 (nearly no degradation after 6000 cycles). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the Ni doping models present lower formation energy and better -OH group adsorption properties. Moreover, the density of electronic state (DOS) and differential charge density distribution demonstrate that Ni doping effectively enhances the charge transport during the charging and discharging processes, which is beneficial to enhance the energy storage of the electrode materials. In conclusion, this work presents a strategy to design MOF-derived composite electrodes. The experimental tests and theoretical calculations explore the energy storage process and prove that the CoNiO/PCNF electrode materials have great potential for applications.

Review on Metal-Organic Framework Classification, Synthetic Approaches, and Influencing Factors: Applications in Energy, Drug Delivery, and Wastewater Treatment

Metal ions or clusters that have been bonded with organic linkers to create one- or more-dimensional structures are referred to as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Reticular synthesis also forms MOFs with properly designated components that can result in crystals with high porosities and great chemical and thermal stability. Due to the wider surface area, huge pore size, crystalline nature, and tunability, numerous MOFs have been shown to be potential candidates in various fields like gas storage and delivery, energy storage, catalysis, and chemical/biosensing. This study provides a quick overview of the current MOF synthesis techniques in order to familiarize newcomers in the chemical sciences field with the fast-growing MOF research. Beginning with the classification and nomenclature of MOFs, synthesis approaches of MOFs have been demonstrated. We also emphasize the potential applications of MOFs in numerous fields such as gas storage, drug delivery, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and separation membranes. Lastly, the future scope is discussed along with prospective opportunities for the synthesis and application of nano-MOFs, which will help promote their uses in multidisciplinary research.

A novel carbonized derivative of Fe-Cu bimetallic organic framework (Fe-Cu-MOF@C): preparation and optimization

A carbon derivative with Fe-Cu bimetallic organic framework (Fe-Cu-MOF@C) was prepared by microwave synthesis and pyrolysis. Using potassium persulfate (PS) as oxidant and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as target pollutant, the optimal preparation conditions of Fe-Cu-MOF@C were studied. The factors affecting the synthesis of Fe-Cu-MOF include microwave power, microwave time, microwave temperature, the molar ratio of metal ions to organic ligands, the molar ratio of iron and copper, etc. In addition, the influence of pyrolysis temperature on the performance of Fe-Cu-MOF@C cannot be ignored. The results show that Fe-Cu-MOF@C has the best catalytic performance when the microwave time is 30 min, the microwave power is 600 W, the microwave temperature is 150 °C, the molar ratio of (Fe²⁺ + Cu²⁺)/H₂BDC is 10:3, the molar ratio of Fe²⁺/Cu²⁺ is 10:1, and the pyrolysis temperature is 700 °C. After 90 min of reaction, 2,4-DCP was completely removed. Repeatable experiments show that Fe-Cu-MOF@C has good stability and its service life can be restored by heat treatment. In this study, a heterogeneous catalyst with strong catalytic capacity, high stability and easy recovery was prepared by a simple and efficient process, which is conducive to the development of advanced oxidation technology and the progress of water environmental protection.

Organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical metal-organic frameworks and cages: design, structures, and applications

Developing hierarchical ordered systems is challenging. Using organo-macrocycles to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs) provides an efficient way to obtain hierarchical assemblies. Macrocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, can be incorporated within MOFs/PCCs and they also endow the resultant composites with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent developments of organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical MOFs/PCCs, emphasizing applications and structure-property relationships of these hierarchically porous materials. This review provides insights for future research on hierarchical self-assembly using macrocycles as building blocks and functional ligands to extend the applications of the composites.

Fabrication of a biological metal-organic framework based superhydrophobic textile fabric for efficient oil/water separation

In response to the industry's difficulty in properly separating oily wastewater discharge, researchers are investigating enhanced oil/water separation materials. In this work, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly superhydrophobic textile fabric was fabricated for effective oil-water mixture and emulsion separation. A biological metal-organic framework consisting of copper as a core metal and aspartic acid as a linker (Cu-Asp MOF) was used to improve the surface roughness of the pristine textile fabric, and stearic acid was used to lower its surface energy. The thermal gravimetric analysis investigated the prepared Cu-Asp MOF's thermal stability. X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studied the crystal orientation and chemical composition of the Cu-Asp MOF, Cu-Asp MOF@SA, pristine textile fabric, and superhydrophobic textile fabric, respectively. The surface morphology of the pristine and modified textile fabric was studied by scanning electron microscope. The wettability results showed that the prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric has a water contact angle of 158° ± 1.3 and water sliding angle of 2° ± 0.2°. The prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric showed excellent oil-water mixture and emulsion separation performance, oil absorption capacity, chemical stability, mechanical abrasion resistance, and a high flux rate. These outstanding characteristics of the prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric greatly increase the possibility for practical applications.

Herb Polysaccharide-Based Drug Delivery System: Fabrication, Properties, and Applications for Immunotherapy

Herb polysaccharides (HPS) have been studied extensively for their healthcare applications. Though the toxicity was not fully clarified, HPS were widely accepted for their biodegradability and biocompatibility. In addition, as carbohydrate polymers with a unique chemical composition, molecular weight, and functional group profile, HPS can be conjugated, cross-linked, and functionally modified. Thus, they are great candidates for the fabrication of drug delivery systems (DDS). HPS-based DDS (HPS-DDS) can bypass phagocytosis by the reticuloendothelial system, prevent the degradation of biomolecules, and increase the bioavailability of small molecules, thus exerting therapeutic effects. In this review, we focus on the application of HPS as components of immunoregulatory DDS. We summarize the principles governing the fabrication of HPS-DDS, including nanoparticles, micelles, liposomes, microemulsions, hydrogels, and microneedles. In addition, we discuss the role of HPS in DDS for immunotherapy. This comprehensive review provides valuable insights that could guide the design of effective HPS-DDS.
