Current advances in treatment technologies for removal of emerging contaminants from water – A critical review

Occurrence and distribution of emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A globally review over the past two decades

Emerging contaminants are pervasive in aquatic environments globally, encompassing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroid hormones, phenols, biocides, disinfectants and various other compounds. Concentrations of these contaminants are detected ranging from ng/L to μg/L. Even at trace levels, these contaminants can pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. This article systematically summarises and categorizes data on the concentrations of 54 common emerging contaminants found in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants across various geographical regions: North America, Europe, Oceania, Africa, and Asia. It reviews the occurrence and distribution of these contaminants, providing spatial and causal analyses based on data from these regions. Notably, the maximum concentrations of the pollutants observed vary significantly across different regions. The data from Africa, in particular, show more frequent detection of pharmaceutical maxima in wastewater treatment plants.

Artificial neural network modeling for the prediction, estimation, and treatment of diverse wastewaters: A comprehensive review and future perspective

The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the treatment of wastewater has achieved increasing attention, as it enhances the efficiency and sustainability of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This paper explores the application of ANN-based models in WWTPs, focusing on the latest published research work, by presenting the effectiveness of ANNs in predicting, estimating, and treatment of diverse types of wastewater. Furthermore, this review comprehensively examines the applicability of the ANNs in various processes and methods used for wastewater treatment, including membrane and membrane bioreactors, coagulation/flocculation, UV-disinfection processes, and biological treatment systems. Additionally, it provides a detailed analysis of pollutants viz organic and inorganic substances, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, drugs, pesticides, dyes, etc., from wastewater, utilizing both ANN and ANN-based models. Moreover, it assesses the techno-economic value of ANNs, provides cost estimation and energy analysis, and outlines promising future research directions of ANNs in wastewater treatment. AI-based techniques are used to predict parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) in WWTP influent. ANNs have been formed for the estimation of the removal efficiency of pollutants such as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), BOD, and total suspended solids (TSS) in the effluent of WWTPs. The literature also discloses the use of AI techniques in WWT is an economical and energy-effective method. AI enhances the efficiency of the pumping system, leading to energy conservation with an impressive average savings of approximately 10%. The system can achieve a maximum energy savings state of 25%, accompanied by a notable reduction in costs of up to 30%.

Intermixing of MoS2 and WS2 photocatalysts toward methylene blue photodegradation

Visible-light-driven photocatalysis using layered materials has garnered increasing attention regarding the degradation of organic dyes. Herein, transition-metal dichalcogenides MoS2 and WS2 prepared by chemical vapor deposition as well as their intermixing are evaluated for photodegradation (PD) of methylene blue under solar simulator irradiation. Our findings revealed that WS2 exhibited the highest PD efficiency of 67.6% and achieved an impressive PD rate constant of 6.1 × 10-3 min-1. Conversely, MoS2 displayed a somewhat lower PD performance of 43.5% but demonstrated remarkable stability. The intriguing result of this study relies on the synergetic effect observed when both MoS2 and WS2 are combined in a ratio of 20% of MoS2 and 80% of WS2. This precise blend resulted in an optimized PD efficiency and exceptional stability reaching 97% upon several cycles. This finding underscores the advantageous outcomes of intermixing WS2 and MoS2, shedding light on the development of an efficient and enduring photocatalyst for visible-light-driven photodegradation of methylene blue.

Ultrasonic degradation of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) and foam fractionate (FF)

The ubiquitousness of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a big concern and PFAS remediation is urgently needed such as via degradation. While previous studies have explored ultrasonic degradation of PFAS, work evaluating the operational parameters is rare, especially concerning real wastes such as aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) and foam fractionate (FF). This study investigates the key operational parameters affecting the degradation efficiency of PFAS, encompassing ultrasonication frequency (580-1144 kHz), power intensity (125-187.5 W), initial concentration (0.08-40 ppm), treatment duration (0.5-3 h), sample volume (100-500 mL), and PFAS structure (perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA; perfluorooctane sulfonate or PFOS; 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate or 6:2 FTS). The defluorination kinetics is different from the removal/degradation kinetics due to the generation of degradation intermediates, suggesting the complex degradation mechanism, which should be evaluated to close the mass balance effectively. Notably, the optimised ultrasonic system achieves ∼125%/∼115% defluorination in AFFF/FF example wastes (compared to ∼65%/∼97% removal) despite their complex composition and the involvement of total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay. In the meantime, a few new PFAS are detected in the post-treatments, including perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and 10:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (10:2 FTS) in the AFFF, and perfluorooctane sulfonamide (FOSA) and 8:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (8:2 FTS) in the FF, again suggesting the complex degradation mechanism. Overall, ultrasonication is effective to degrade PFAS real example wastes, advancing its potential for scale-up applications.

Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Occurrence, efficiency of treatment processes, source apportionment and human health risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and xenoestrogen compounds in tap water from some Ghanaian communities

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals and xenoestrogen compounds (PXCs) in drinking water presents a dire human health risk challenge. The problem stems from the high anthropogenic pollution load on source water and the inefficiencies of the conventional water treatment plants in treating PXCs. This study assessed the PXCs levels and the consequential health risks of exposure to tap water from selected Ghanaian communities as well as that of raw water samples from the respective treatment plants. Thus the PXCs treatment efficiency of two drinking water treatment plants in the metropolises studied was also assessed. The study also conducted source apportionment of the PXCs in the tap water. Twenty six (26) tap and raw water samples from communities in the Cape Coast and Sekondi-Takoradi metropolises were extracted using SPE cartridges and analysed for PXCs using Ultra-fast-HPLC-UV instrument. Elevated levels of PXCs up to 24.79 and 22.02 μg/L were respectively recorded in raw and tap water samples from the metropolises. Consequently, elevated non-cancer health risk (HI > 1) to residential adults were found for tap water samples from Cape Coast metropolis and also for some samples from Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis. Again, elevated cumulative oral cancer risks >10-5 and dermal cancer risk up to 4 × 10-5 were recorded. The source apportionment revealed three significant sources of PXCs in tap water samples studied. The results revealed the inefficiency of the treatment plants in removing PXCs from the raw water during treatments. The situation thus requires urgent attention to ameliorate it, safeguarding public health. It is recommended that the conventional water treatment process employed be augmented with advanced treatment technologies to improve their efficacy in PXCs treatment.

Advanced technologies in water treatment: Chitosan and its modifications as effective agents in the adsorption of contaminants

Chitosan, derived from the abundant biopolymer chitin, has emerged as a promising option for water treatment due to its intrinsic bioavailability. This review emphasizes the notable characteristics of chitosan, which allow for various modifications, expanding its applications. The polymer's effectiveness in adsorbing contaminants, particularly in advanced water treatment technologies, is highlighted. The review underscores the potential of chitosan-based hybrid materials, including nanocomposites, hydrogels, membranes, films, sponges, nanoparticles, microspheres, and flakes, as innovative alternatives to traditional chemical-based adsorbents. The advantages of using these materials in wastewater treatment, especially in removing heavy metals, dyes, and emerging compounds, are explored. The study delves into the mechanisms involved in wastewater treatment with chitosan, emphasizing the interactions between the polymer and various contaminants. Additionally, the application of chitosan as a contaminant removal agent in a post-pandemic context is addressed, considering the challenges related to waste management and environmental preservation. The analysis highlights the potential contribution of chitosan in mitigating environmental impacts post-pandemic, offering practical solutions for treating contaminated effluents and promoting sustainability. The study addresses current obstacles and prospects for chitosan-based wastewater treatment, emphasizing its promising role in sustainable water management.

Developing an Approach for Integrating Chemical Analysis and Transcriptional Changes to Assess Contaminants in Water, Sediment, and Fish

Pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments pose threats to aquatic organisms because of their continuous release and potential accumulation. Monitoring methods for these contaminants are inadequate, with targeted analyses falling short in assessing water quality's impact on biota. The present study advocates for integrated strategies combining suspect and targeted chemical analyses with molecular biomarker approaches to better understand the risks posed by complex chemical mixtures to nontarget organisms. The research aimed to integrate chemical analysis and transcriptome changes in fathead minnows to prioritize contaminants, assess their effects, and apply this strategy in Wascana Creek, Canada. Analysis revealed higher pharmaceutical concentrations downstream of a wastewater-treatment plant, with clozapine being the most abundant in fathead minnows, showing notable bioavailability from water and sediment sources. Considering the importance of bioaccumulation factor and biota-sediment accumulation factor in risk assessment, these coefficients were calculated based on field data collected during spring, summer, and fall seasons in 2021. Bioaccumulation was classified as very bioaccumulative with values >5000 L kg-1, suggesting the ability of pharmaceuticals to accumulate in aquatic organisms. The study highlighted the intricate relationship between nutrient availability, water quality, and key pathways affected by pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and rubber components. Prioritization of these chemicals was done through suspect analysis, supported by identifying perturbed pathways (specifically signaling and cellular processes) using transcriptomic analysis in exposed fish. This strategy not only aids in environmental risk assessment but also serves as a practical model for other watersheds, streamlining risk-assessment processes to identify environmental hazards and work toward reducing risks from contaminants of emerging concern. Advancement of membrane separation technology for organic pollutant removal

In the face of growing global freshwater scarcity, the imperative to recycle and reuse water becomes increasingly apparent across industrial, agricultural, and domestic sectors. Eliminating a range of organic pollutants in wastewater, from pesticides to industrial byproducts, presents a formidable challenge. Among the potential solutions, membrane technologies emerge as promising contenders for treating diverse organic contaminants from industrial, agricultural, and household origins. This paper explores cutting-edge membrane-based approaches, including reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, gas separation membranes, and pervaporation. Each technology's efficacy in removing distinct organic pollutants while producing purified water is scrutinized. This review delves into membrane fouling, discussing its influencing factors and preventative strategies. It sheds light on the merits, limitations, and prospects of these various membrane techniques, contributing to the advancement of wastewater treatment. It advocates for future research in membrane technology with a focus on fouling control and the development of energy-efficient devices. Interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, engineers, policymakers, and industry players is vital for shaping water purification innovation. Ongoing research and collaboration position us to fulfill the promise of accessible, clean water for all.

Global insight into the occurrence, treatment technologies and ecological risk of emerging contaminants in sanitary sewers: Effects of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic caused changes in the consumption of prescribed/non-prescribed drugs and the population's habits, influencing the detection and concentration of emerging contaminants (ECs) in sanitary sewage and harming environmental and health risks. Therefore, the present work sought to discuss current literature data on the effects of the "COVID-19 pandemic factor" on the quality of raw sewage produced over a five-year period (2018-2019: pre-pandemic; 2020-2022: during the pandemic) and biological, physical, chemical and hybrid treatment technologies, influencing factors in the removal of ECs and potential ecological risks (RQs). Seven hundred thirty-one publications correlating sewage and COVID-19 were identified: 184 pre-pandemic and 547 during the pandemic. Eight classes and 37 ECs were detected in sewage between 2018 and 2022, with the "COVID-19 pandemic factor" promoting an increase in estrogens (+31,775 %), antibiotics (+19,544 %), antiepileptics and antipsychotics (+722 %), pesticides (+200 %), analgesics, anti-inflammatories and anticoagulants (+173 %), and stimulant medications (+157 %) in sanitary sewage. Among the treatment systems, aerated reactors integrated into biomembranes removed >90 % of cephalexin, clarithromycin, ibuprofen, estrone, and 17β-estradiol. The absorption, adsorption, and biodegradation mechanisms of planted wetland systems contributed to better cost-benefit in reducing the polluting load of sewage ECs in the COVID-19 pandemic, individually or integrated into the WWTP. The COVID-19 pandemic factor increased the potential ecological risks (RQs) for aquatic organisms by 40 %, with emphasis on clarithromycin and sulfamethoxazole, which changed from negligible risk and low risk to (very) high risk and caffeine with RQ > 2500. Therefore, it is possible to suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic intensified physiological, metabolic, and physical changes to different organisms in aquatic biota by ECs during 2020 and 2022.

Excess sludge-based biochar loaded with manganese enhances catalytic ozonation efficiency for landfill leachate treatment

This study developed an efficient and stable landfill leachate treatment process, which was based on the combination of biochar catalytic ozonation and activated sludge technology for intensive treatment of landfill leachate, aiming to achieve the standard discharge of leachate. The focus is to investigate the effect of manganese loading on the physicochemical properties of biochar and the mechanism of its catalytic ozonation. It was found that more surface functional groups (CO, Mn-O, etc.) and defects (ID/IG = 1.27) were exposed via the change of original carbon structure by loading Mn, which is conducive to the generation of lattice oxygen. Meanwhile, generating different valence states of Mn metal can improve the redox properties and electron migration rate, and encourage the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during the reaction process and enhance the catalytic efficiency. The synergistic action of microorganisms, especially denitrifying bacteria, was found to play a key role in the degradation of nitrogenous pollutants during the activated sludge process. The concentration of NH+4-N was reduced from the initial 1087.03 ± 9.56 mg/L to 9.05 ± 1.91 mg/L, while COD was reduced from 2290 ± 14.14 mg/L to 86.5 ± 2.12 mg/L, with corresponding removal rates of 99.17% and 99.20%, respectively. This method offers high efficiency and stability, achieving discharge standards for leachate (GB16889-2008). The synergy between Mn-loaded biochar and microorganisms in the activated sludge is key to effective treatment. This study offers a new approach to solving the challenge of waste leachate treatment.

Adsorptive behavior of engineered biochar /hydrochar for tetracycline removal from synthetic wastewater

In this research, engineered biochar and hydrochar derived from paddy husk were compared for the adsorption tetracycline (TC) in water effluents. Biochar was produced at three different pyrolysis temperatures (e.g., 250 °C, 300 °C and 350 °C) while hydrochar was produced using three different HTC temperatures (e.g., 180 °C, 200 °C and 220 °C). The adsorptive experiments were performed for both biochar and hydrochar using well-defined experimental conditions: pH (3); initial TC concentration (10 mg/L); adsorbent dosage (1 g/L); and temperature (27 °C) to study their adsorptive performances (qe in mg/g). After selecting the best qe values for both biochar and hydrochar, both materials were modified using 20% H3PO4. A comprehensive scientific evaluation of both engineered biochar (EBC 350) and hydrochar (EHC 220) was performed using adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics, rate-limiting, and thermodynamics tests along with their characterization using FTIR and point of zero charge (pzc). The effects of temperature, dosage, and initial TC concentration on the adsorption process were studied for both EBC 350 and EHC 220. Acid activation improved the adsorptive performance of EHC 220 almost four times (from 1.9 to 7.5 mg/g), whereas adsorptive performance of EBC 350 improved 2.4 times from 3.8 to 9.1 mg/g. The best pH for TC adsorption onto EHC 220 was 5, whereas it was 3 for EBC 350. EBC 350 exhibited a good fit with the Freundlich model, whereas EHC 220 followed the Langmuir model. At 100 mg/L TC concentration, EHC 220 exhibited higher qe value (46.9 mg/g) compared to EBC 350 (41.7 mg/g). The Pseudo-first order kinetic model was the best fit for EHC 220 adsorption, whereas Pseudo-second order model was most suitable for EBC 350. The adsorption mechanisms involved in TC adsorption by EHC 220 included hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effect, and π-π interaction, whereas cation exchange, mass diffusion, and π-π interaction were involved for EBC 350. The results of this study will facilitate the development of cost-effective filters with the incorporation of engineered biochar/engineered hydrochar for the active removal of emerging contaminants, like tetracycline, from wastewater so as to increase its reusable potential.

Promoting the suitability of graphitic carbon nitride and metal oxide nanoparticles: A review of sulfonamides photocatalytic degradation

The widespread consumption of pharmaceutical drugs and their incomplete breakdown in organisms has led to their extensive presence in aquatic environments. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics, such as sulfonamides, has contributed to the development of drug-resistant bacteria and the persistent pollution of water bodies, posing a threat to human health and the safety of the environment. Thus, it is paramount to explore remediation technologies aimed at decomposing and complete elimination of the toxic contaminants from pharmaceutical wastewater. The review aims to explore the utilization of metal-oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) and graphitic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4) in photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides from wastewater. Recent advances in oxidation techniques such as photocatalytic degradation are being exploited in the elimination of the sulfonamides from wastewater. MONP and g-C3N4 are commonly evolved nano substances with intrinsic properties. They possessed nano-scale structure, considerable porosity semi-conducting properties, responsible for decomposing wide range of water pollutants. They are widely applied for photocatalytic degradation of organic and inorganic substances which continue to evolve due to the low-cost, efficiency, less toxicity, and more environmentally friendliness of the materials. The review focuses on the current advances in the application of these materials, their efficiencies, degradation mechanisms, and recyclability in the context of sulfonamides photocatalytic degradation.

Denim industry wastewater treatment by a heterogeneous solar-Fenton process catalyzed by Fe supported on recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by ultrasonic modification

The textile industry is an important economic sector; however, its wastewater generates a great impact on the environment. A heterogeneous solar Fenton (HSF) process was evaluated for denim wastewater treatment. The catalyst was obtained through ultrasonic modification of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with Fe nanoparticles (PET/NPs- Fe3O4). The SFH process was optimized using surface response methodology with a face-centered central composite design considering the effects of the hydraulic retention time (10, 25, and 40 min), hydrogen peroxide dosage (500, 1000, and 1500 mg/L), and mass of the packed catalyst (4, 6 and 8 g) on the color, COD, and turbidity removal efficiencies. The operating conditions for maximum COD removal were H2O2 541.7 mg/L, HRT 33.9 min, and PET/NPs- Fe3O4 dose 7.9 g with solar radiation. The removal of 91.2% COD, 86.2% color, 90.4% turbidity, and 81.9% TOC was obtained at 14.2 kJ/L QUva. PET modification yielded 1.6 mg Fe/g PET, and the modification method does not allow Fe leaching. The effluent obtained from the SFH process complies with the maximum permissible limits in Mexican legislation in terms of COD, TOC, turbidity, and color and allows the reuse of PET.

Prioritization of chemicals in personal care products based on persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) potential: An Indian perspective

Numerous organic ingredients present in Personal care products (PCPs) are being detected in sewage which has a high potential to impact the environment. These compounds are called as Emerging contaminants (ECs) or Contaminants of emerging concern. However, the information on the source and occurrence of ECs present in PCPs is very minimal. Specifically, information on the persistence (P), bioaccumulation (B) and toxicity (T) is very scarce. The determination of PBT properties is a complex task given the magnitude of chemicals, thus it is necessary to have a tool to quickly screen and prioritize the most important compounds. Estimation Program Interface (EPI) Suite™ is one such tool authorized by United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) for screening purposes. In the present study, several organic compounds present in the PCPs viz. body lotion, sunscreens, moisturizers, hair dyes, and some hair care products were identified and their PBT property was estimated. The results from the study indicate that the order of increasing occurrence of PBT chemicals is sunscreens > moisturizers > body lotion > hair care products > hair dyes. The prioritized compounds were given rank 1 (maximum concern) to rank 4 (minimum concern). From the results, the compounds octocrylene in sunscreens and butylphenyl methylpropional in body lotions were prioritized as Rank 1.

Field assessment of coconut-based activated carbon systems for the treatment of herbicide contamination

Once released into the environment, herbicides can move through soil or surface water to streams and groundwater. Filters containing adsorbent media placed in fields may be an effective solution to herbicide loss in the environment. However, to date, no study has investigated the use of adsorbent materials in intervention systems at field-scale, nor has any study investigated their optimal configuration. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to examine the efficacy of low-cost, coconut-based activated carbon (CAC) intervention systems, placed in streams and tributaries, for herbicide removal. Two configurations of interventions were investigated in two agricultural catchments and one urban area in Ireland: (1) filter bags and (2) filter bags fitted into polyethylene pipes. Herbicide sampling was conducted using Chemcatcher® passive sampling devices in order to identify trends in herbicide exceedances at the sites, and to quantifiably assess, compare, and contrast the efficiency of the two intervention configurations. While the Chemcatcher® passive sampling devices are capable of analysing eighteen different acid herbicides, only six different acid herbicides (2,4-D, clopyralid, fluroxypyr, MCPA, mecoprop and triclopyr) were ever detected within the three catchment areas, which were also the only acid herbicides used therein. The CAC was capable of complete herbicide removal, when the water flow was slow (0.5-1 m3 s-1), and the interventions spanned the width and depth of the waterway. Overall, the reduction in herbicide concentrations was better for the filter pipes than for the filter bags, with a 48% reduction in detections and a 37% reduction in exceedances across all the sampling sites for the filter pipe interventions compared to a 13% reduction in the number of detections and a 24% reduction in exceedances across all sampling sites for the filter bag interventions (p < 0.05). This study demonstrates, for the first time, that CAC may be an effective in situ remediation strategy to manage herbicide exceedances close to the source, thereby reducing the impact on environmental and public health.

Advances in identifying and managing emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems: Analytical approaches, toxicity assessment, transformation pathways, environmental fate, and remediation strategies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are increasingly recognized as threats to human health and ecosystems. This review evaluates advanced analytical methods, particularly mass spectrometry, for detecting ECs and understanding their toxicity, transformation pathways, and environmental distribution. Our findings underscore the reliability of current techniques and the potential of upcoming methods. The adverse effects of ECs on aquatic life necessitate both in vitro and in vivo toxicity assessments. Evaluating the distribution and degradation of ECs reveals that they undergo physical, chemical, and biological transformations. Remediation strategies such as advanced oxidation, adsorption, and membrane bioreactors effectively treat EC-contaminated waters, with combinations of these techniques showing the highest efficacy. To minimize the impact of ECs, a proactive approach involving monitoring, regulations, and public education is vital. Future research should prioritize the refining of detection methods and formulation of robust policies for EC management.

Recent progress in mineralization of emerging contaminants by advanced oxidation process: A review

Emerging contaminants are chemicals generated due to the usage of pesticide, endocrine disrupting compounds, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products and are liberated into the environment in trace quantities. The emerging contaminants eventually become a greater menace to living beings owing to their wide range and inhibitory action. To diminish these emerging contaminants from the environment, an Advanced Oxidation Process was considered as an efficient option. The Advanced Oxidation Process is an efficient method for mineralizing fractional or generous contaminants due to the generation of reactive species. The primary aim of this review paper is to provide a thorough knowledge on different Advanced Oxidation Process methods and to assess their mineralization efficacy of emerging contaminants. This study indicates the need for an integrated process for enhancing the treatment efficiency and overcoming the drawbacks of the individual Advanced Oxidation Process. Further, its application concerning technical and economic aspects is reviewed. Until now, most of the studies have been based on lab or pilot scale and do not represent the actual scenario of the emerging contaminant mineralization. Thus, the scaling up of the process was discussed, and the major challenges in large scale implementation were pointed out.

A bibliometric analysis of emerging contaminants (ECs) (2001-2021): Evolution of hotspots and research trends

Emerging contaminants (ECs) have attracted increasing attention in the past two decades because of their ubiquitous existence and high environmental risk. Understanding the progress of research and the evolution of hot topics is critical. This study provides a bibliometric review, along with a quantitative trend analysis of approximately 8000 publication records dated from 2001 to 2021. Wider distribution in various subjects was discovered in terms of publication numbers, indicating a strong tendency for EC research to become an interdisciplinary topic. Visualization of term co-occurrence analysis revealed that the ECs study went through three stages over time: identification and detection, traceability and risk, and process and control. Quantitative trend analysis revealed that antibiotics, microplastics, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), per/poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, heavy metals, and nanoparticles are attracting increasing attention, whereas conventional pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants, and materials such as benzotriazole, diclofenac, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, triclosan, and titanium dioxide exhibit a downward trend. PFAS and EDCs are considered potential future core hotspots for the hysteretic rise in research attention compared with conventional ECs. Furthermore, analysis of research linkage and the developing stages of ECs could be possible approach to determine the evolution of hotspots in ECs study. This study provides objective and comprehensive insights into the research landscape of ECs, which may shed light on future developmental directions for researchers interested in this field.

Graphene Oxide-Polyphenylsulfone Nanocomposite Beads for Paracetamol Removal from Aqueous Solution

This study introduces a promising and practical method for the removal of paracetamol from aqueous environments, employing graphene oxide-polymer nanocomposite beads. The approach involves the utilization of a straightforward and facile phase inversion method, offering a convenient and efficient one-step process for the creation of adsorbent beads by integrating polymers and graphene oxide (GO). The synthesized nanocomposite beads are tailored for the removal of paracetamol from simulated wastewater in batch systems. Extensive characterization techniques including XPS, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and zeta potential analysis are employed to scrutinize the chemical properties and structural attributes of the prepared beads. The investigation explores the impact of critical parameters such as adsorbent dosage, adsorption duration, initial paracetamol concentration, and solution pH on the adsorption process. These nanocomposite beads exhibit an exceptional paracetamol removal efficiency, achieving up to 99% removal. This research not only contributes to the advancement of efficient and sustainable adsorbent materials for pollutant removal but also underscores their potential for environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions in the domain of wastewater treatment.

Advances in responses of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis to emerging pollutants in wastewater

Nowadays, emerging pollutants are widely used and exist in wastewater, such as antibiotics, heavy metals, nanoparticle and microplastic. As a green alternative for wastewater treatment, microalgal-bacterial symbiosis has been aware of owning multiple merits of low energy consumption and little greenhouse gas emission. Thus, the responses of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis to emerging pollutants in wastewater treatment have become a hotspot in recent years. In this review paper, the removal performance of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis on organics, nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater containing emerging pollutants has been summarized. The adaptation mechanisms of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis to emerging pollutants have been analyzed. It is found that antibiotics usually have hormesis effects on microalgal-bacterial symbiosis, and that microalgal-bacterial symbiosis appears to show more capacity to remove tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole, rather than oxytetracycline and enrofloxacin. Generally, microalgal-bacterial symbiosis can adapt to heavy metals at a concentration of less than 1 mg/L, but its capabilities to remove contaminants can be significantly affected at 10 mg/L heavy metals. Further research should focus on the influence of mixed emerging pollutants on microalgal-bacterial symbiosis, and the feasibility of using selected emerging pollutants (e.g., antibiotics) as a carbon source for microalgal-bacterial symbiosis should also be explored. This review is expected to deepen our understandings on emerging pollutants removal from wastewater by microalgal-bacterial symbiosis.

Role of the hydrolytic-acidogenic phase on the removal of bisphenol A and sildenafil during anaerobic treatment

This paper presents the main results of the removal of two pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), bisphenol A (BPA) and sildenafil (SDF), by applying anaerobic biological batch tests. The biomass used was previously acclimatized and the experiment lasted 28 days. The effect of factors such as compound (BPA and SDF), concentration and type of inoculum was assessed, considering the factorial experimental design. The results indicated that evaluated factors did not significantly affect the PPCPs elimination in the evaluated range with a confidence level of 95%. On the other hand, the removal percentages obtained with BPA were mainly related to mechanisms, such as sorption and abiotic reactions. Regarding SDF, biodegradation was the predominant mechanism of removal under the experimental conditions of this study; however, the degradation of SDF was partial, with percentages lower than 43% in the tests with hydrolytic/acidogenic inoculum (H/A) and lower than 41% in the tests with methanogenic inoculum (MET). Finally, these findings indicated that hydrolysis/acidogenesis phase is a main contributor to SDF biodegradation in anaerobic digestion. The study provides a starting point for future research that seeks to improve treatment systems to optimize the removal of pollutants from different water sources.

Degradation of Pesticides Using Semiconducting and Tetrapyrrolic Macrocyclic Photocatalysts-A Concise Review

Exposure to pesticides is inevitable in modern times, and their environmental presence is strongly associated to the development of various malignancies. This challenge has prompted an increased interest in finding more sustainable ways of degrading pesticides. Advanced oxidation processes in particular appear as highly advantageous, due to their ability of selectively removing chemical entities form wastewaters. This review provides a concise introduction to the mechanisms of photochemical advanced oxidation processes with an objective perspective, followed by a succinct literature review on the photodegradation of pesticides utilizing metal oxide-based semiconductors as photosensitizing catalysts. The selection of reports discussed here is based on relevance and impact, which are recognized globally, ensuring rigorous scrutiny. Finally, this literature review explores the use of tetrapyrrolic macrocyclic photosensitizers in pesticide photodegradation, analyzing their benefits and limitations and providing insights into future directions.

Critical review on modified floating photocatalysts for emerging contaminants removal from landscape water: problems, methods and mechanism

Due to the disorderly discharge in modern production and daily life of people, emerging contaminants(ECs) began to appear in landscape water, and have become a key public concern. Because of the unique characteristics of landscape water, it is difficult to efficiently remove ECs either by natural purification or by traditional large-scale sewage treatment facilities. The ideal purification method is to remove them while maintaining a beautiful environment. Possessing the feature of low-density, floating photocatalysts could harvest sufficient light on the surface of the water for photocatalytic degradation, which may be an important supplement for ECs treatment in landscape water. This paper gave a review related to floating photocatalysts and proposed an idea of combining floating photocatalysts to construct bionic photocatalytic materials for contaminative landscape water treatment. Six types of common floating substrates and corresponding applications for floating photocatalysts were concluded in this paper, and the main problem leading to the low efficiency of photocatalysts and three corresponding three improvement strategies were discussed. Besides, the modification mechanisms of photocatalysts were discussed thoroughly. On this basis, the engineering application prospects of bionic photocatalytic materials were proposed to remove ECs in landscape water.

Ultrasound-based advanced oxidation processes for landfill leachate treatment: Energy consumption, influences, mechanisms and perspectives

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on ultrasound (US) have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to its advantages in the degradation of landfill leachate. The review summarizes the existing treatment methods of leachate from lab-scale, compares their advantages and disadvantages by focusing on the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) in the leachate. Then the US-based AOPs are introduced emphatically, including their degradation mechanisms, influencing factors, energy consumption, further optimization methods as well as the possibility of field-scale application are systematically described. Moreover, this review also expounds on the advantages of dual-frequency US (DFUS) technology compared with single-frequency US, and a theoretically feasible DFUS process is proposed to treat ECs in the leachate. Finally, suggestions and prospects for US technologies in treating landfill leachate are put forward to aid future research on landfill leachate treatment. Meaningfully, this manuscript will provide reference values of US-based technologies in landfill leachate treatment for the practical use, facilitating the development of US-based AOPs in landfill leachate management and disposal.

Viable remediation techniques to cleansing wastewaters comprising endocrine-disrupting compounds

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have recently gained prominence as emerging pollutants due to their significant negative impacts on diverse living forms in ecosystems, including humans, by altering their endocrine systems. EDCs are a prominent category of emerging contaminants in various aquatic settings. Given the growing population and limited access to freshwater resources, their expulsion from aquatic systems is also a severe issue. EDC removal from wastewater depends on the physicochemical properties of the specific EDCs found in each wastewater type and various aquatic environments. Due to these components' chemical, physical, and physicochemical diversity, various approaches based on physical, biological, electrochemical, and chemical procedures have been developed to eliminate them. The objective of this review is to provide the comprehensive overview by selecting recent approaches that showed significant impact on the best available methods for removing EDCs from various aquatic matrices. It is suggested that adsorption by carbon-based materials or bioresources is effective at higher EDC concentrations. Electrochemical mechanization works, but it requires expensive electrodes, continual energy, and chemicals. Due to the lack of chemicals and hazardous byproducts, adsorption and biodegradation are considered environmentally friendly. When combined with synthetic biology and an AI system, biodegradation can efficiently remove EDCs and replace conventional water treatment technologies in the near future. Hybrid in-house methods may reduce EDCs best, depending on the EDC and resources.

Adsorption of ibuprofen using waste coffee derived carbon architecture: Experimental, kinetic modeling, statistical and bio-inspired optimization

Pharmaceuticals in water are a growing environmental concern, as they can harm aquatic life and human health. To address this issue, an adsorbent made from coffee waste that effectively removes ibuprofen (a common pharmaceutical pollutant) from wastewater was developed. The experimental adsorption phase was planned using a Design of Experiments approach with Box-Behnken strategy. The relation between the ibuprofen removal efficiency and various independent variables, including adsorbent weight (0.01-0.1 g) and pH (3-9), was evaluated via a regression model with 3-level and 4-factors using the Response surface methodology (RSM) . The optimal ibuprofen removal was achieved after 15 min using 0.1 g adsorbent at 32.4 °C and pH = 6.9. Moreover, the process was optimized using two powerful bio-inspired metaheuristics (Bacterial Foraging Optimization and Virus Optimization Algorithm). The adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics of ibuprofen onto waste coffee-derived activated carbon were modeled at the identified optimal conditions. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were implemented to investigate adsorption equilibrium, and thermodynamic parameters were also calculated. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the adsorbent's maximum adsorption capacity was 350.00 mg g-1 at 35 °C. The findings revealed that the ibuprofen adsorption was well-matched with the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating multilayer adsorption on heterogeneous sites. The computed positive enthalpy value showed the endothermic nature of ibuprofen adsorption at the adsorbate interface.

Plants, animals, and fisheries waste-mediated bioremediation of contaminants of environmental and emerging concern (CEECs)-a circular bioresource utilization approach

The release of contaminants of environmental concern including heavy metals and metalloids, and contaminants of emerging concern including organic micropollutants from processing industries, pharmaceuticals, personal care, and anthropogenic sources, is a growing threat worldwide. Mitigating inorganic and organic contaminants, which can be coined as contaminants of environmental and emerging concern (CEECs), is a big challenge as traditional physicochemical processes are not economically viable for managing mixed contaminants of low concentrations. As a result, low-cost materials must be designed to provide high CEEC removal efficiency. One of the environmentally viable and energy-efficient approaches is biosorption, which involves using biomass or biopolymers isolated from plants or animals to decontaminate heavy metals in contaminated environments using inherent biological mechanisms. Among chemical constituents in plant biomass, cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, proteins, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and animal biomass include polysaccharides and other compounds to bind heavy metals covalently and non-covalently. These functional groups include carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl, amide, amine, and sulfhydryl. Cation-exchange capacities of these bioadsorbents can be improved by applying chemical modifications. The relevance of chemical constituents and bioactives in biosorbents derived from agricultural production such as food and fodder crops, bioenergy and cash crops, fruit and vegetable crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation trees, aquatic and terrestrial weeds, and animal production such as dairy, goatery, poultry, duckery, and fisheries is highlighted in this comprehensive review for sequestering and bioremediation of CEECs, including as many as ten different heavy metals and metalloids co-contaminated with other organic micropollutants in circular bioresource utilization and one-health concepts.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Acetaminophen in Aqueous Environments: A Mini Review

Over the past few decades, acetaminophen (ACT), a typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has gained global usage, positioning itself as one of the most extensively consumed medications. However, the incomplete metabolism of ACT leads to a substantial discharge into the environment, classifying it as an environmental contaminant with detrimental effects on non-target organisms. Various wastewater treatment technologies have been developed for ACT removal to mitigate its potential environmental risk. Particularly, photocatalytic technology has garnered significant attention as it exhibits high efficiency in oxidizing and degrading a wide range of organic pollutants. This comprehensive review aims to systematically examine and discuss the application of photocatalytic technology for the removal of ACT from aqueous environments. Additionally, the study provides a detailed overview of the limitations associated with the photocatalytic degradation of ACT in practical applications, along with effective strategies to address these challenges.

Challenges and Solutions for Global Water Scarcity

Climate change, global population growth, and rising standards of living have put immense strain on natural resources, resulting in the unsecured availability of water as an existential resource. Access to high-quality drinking water is crucial for daily life, food production, industry, and nature. However, the demand for freshwater resources exceeds the available supply, making it essential to utilize all alternative water resources such as the desalination of brackish water, seawater, and wastewater. Reverse osmosis desalination is a highly efficient method to increase water supplies and make clean, affordable water accessible to millions of people. However, to ensure universal access to water, various measures need to be implemented, including centralized governance, educational campaigns, improvements in water catchment and harvesting technologies, infrastructure development, irrigation and agricultural practices, pollution control, investments in novel water technologies, and transboundary water cooperation. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of measures for utilizing alternative water sources, with particular emphasis on seawater desalination and wastewater reclamation techniques. In particular, membrane-based technologies are critically reviewed, with a focus on their energy consumption, costs, and environmental impacts.

Emerging contaminants bioremediation by enzyme and nanozyme-based processes - A review

Due to their widespread occurrence and the inadequate removal efficiencies by conventional wastewater treatment plants, emerging contaminants (ECs) have recently become an issue of great concern. Current ongoing studies have focused on different physical, chemical, and biological methods as strategies to avoid exposing ecosystems to significant long-term risks. Among the different proposed technologies, the enzyme-based processes rise as green biocatalysts with higher efficiency yields and lower generation of toxic by-products. Oxidoreductases and hydrolases are among the most prominent enzymes applied for bioremediation processes. The present work overviews the state of the art of recent advances in enzymatic processes during wastewater treatment of EC, focusing on recent innovations in terms of applied immobilization techniques, genetic engineering tools, and the advent of nanozymes. Future trends in the enzymes immobilization techniques for EC removal were highlighted. Research gaps and recommendations on methods and utility of enzymatic treatment incorporation in conventional wastewater treatment plants were also discussed.

Wastewater treatment with algal based membrane bioreactor for the future: Removing emerging containments

The difficulty of developing pollutants in aquatic ecosystems and their potential effects on animals and plants have been raised. Sewage effluent can seriously harm a river's plant and animal life by reducing the water's oxygen content. Due to their increasing use and poor elimination in traditional municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), pharmaceuticals are one of the developing pollutants that have the potential to penetrate aquatic ecosystems. Due to undigested pharmaceuticals and their metabolites, which constitute a significant class of potentially hazardous aquatic pollutants. Using an algae-based membrane bioreactor (AMBR), the primary objective of this research was to eliminate emerging contaminants (ECs) identified in municipal wastewater. The first part of this research covers the basics of growing algae, an explanation of how they work, and how they remove ECs. Second, it develops the membrane in the wastewater, explains its workings, and uses the membrane to remove ECs. Finally, an algae-based membrane bioreactor for removing ECs is examined. As a result, daily algal production using AMBR technology might range from 50 to 100 mg/Liter. These kinds of machines are capable of nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies of 30-97% and 46-93%, respectively.

Competitive study of homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton-like flow-through propoxur oxidation in ROC solution

Reverse osmosis is used as a tertiary treatment for wastewater reclamation. However, sustainable management of the concentrate (ROC) is challenging, due to the need for treatment and/or disposal. The objective of this research was to investigate the efficiency of homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation processes in removing propoxur (PR), a micro-pollutant compound, from synthetic ROC solution in a submerged ceramic membrane reactor operated in a continuous mode. A freshly prepared amorphous heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized and characterized, revealing a layered porous structure of 5-16 nm nanoparticles that formed aggregates (33-49 μm) known as ferrihydrite (Fh). The membrane exhibited a rejection of >99.6% for Fh. The homogeneous catalysis (Fe³⁺) exhibited better catalytic activity than the Fh in terms of PR removal efficiencies. However, by increasing the H₂O₂ and Fh concentrations at a constant molar ratio, the PR oxidation efficiencies were equal to those catalyzed by the Fe³⁺. The ionic composition of the ROC solution had an inhibitory effect on the PR oxidation, whereas increased residence time improved it up to 87% at a residence time of 88 min. Overall, the study highlights the potential of heterogeneous Fenton-like processes catalyzed by Fh in a continuous mode of operation.

Impact of historical legacy pesticides on achieving legislative goals in Europe

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to optimise food production. However, the movement of pesticides into water bodies negatively impacts aquatic environments. The European Union (EU) aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly through its current Farm to Fork strategy. As part of this strategy, the EU plans to reduce the overall use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50 % by 2030. The attainment of this target may be compromised by the prevalence of legacy pesticides arising from historical applications to land, which can persist in the environment for several decades. The current EU Farm to Fork policy overlooks the potential challenges of legacy pesticides and requirements for their remediation. In this review, the current knowledge regarding pesticide use in Europe, as well as pathways of pesticide movement to waterways, are investigated. The issues of legacy pesticides, including exceedances, are examined, and existing and emerging methods of pesticide remediation, particularly of legacy pesticides, are discussed. The fact that some legacy pesticides can be detected in water samples, more than twenty-five years after they were prohibited, highlights the need for improved EU strategies and policies aimed at targeting legacy pesticides in order to meet future targets.

Advancements in the dominion of fate and transport of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the environment-a bibliometric study

The study on the fate and transport of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products, PPCPs (FTP) in the environment, has received particular attention for over two decades. The PPCPs threaten ecology and human health even at low concentrations due to their synergistic effects and long-range transport. The research aims to provide an inclusive map of the scientific background of FTP research over the last 25 years, from 1996 to 2020, to identify the main characteristics, evolution, salient research themes, trends, and research hotspots in the field of interest. Bibliometric networks were synthesized and analyzed for 577 journal articles extracted from the Scopus database. Consequently, seven major themes of FTP research were identified as follows: (i) PPCPs category; (ii) hazardous effects; (iii) occurrence of PPCPs; (iv) PPCPs in organisms; (v) remediation; (vi) FTP-governing processes; and (vii) assessment in the environment. The themes gave an in-depth picture of the sources of PPCPs and their transport and fate processes in the environment, which originated from sewage treatment plants and transported further to sediment/soils/groundwater/oceans that act as the PPCPs' major sink. The article provided a rigorous analysis of the research landscape in the FTP study conducted during the specified years. The prominent research themes, content analysis, and research hotspots identified in the study may serve as the basis of real-time guidance to lead future research areas and a prior review for policymakers and practitioners.

Recent innovations and challenges in the eradication of emerging contaminants from aquatic systems

Presence of emerging pollutants (EPs), aka Micropollutants (MPs) in the freshwater environments is a severe threat to the environment and human beings. They include pharmaceuticals, insecticides, industrial chemicals, natural hormones, and personal care items and the pollutants are mostly present in wastewater generated from urbanization and increased industrial growth. Even concentrations as low as ngL^-1 or mgL^-1 have proven ecologically lethal to aquatic biota. For several years, the biodegradation of various Micropollutants (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems has been a significant area of research worldwide, with many chemical compounds being discovered in various water bodies. As aquatic biota spends most of their formative phases in polluted water, the impacts on aquatic biota are obvious, indicating that the environmental danger is substantial. In contrast, the impact of these contaminants on aquatic creatures and freshwater consumption is more subtle and manifests directly when disrupting the endocrine system. Research and development activities are expected to enable the development of ecologically sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient treatments for practical systems in the near future. Therefore, this review aims to understand recent emerging pollutants discovered and the available treatment technologies and suggest an innovative and cost-effective method to treat these EPs, which is sustainable and follows the circular bioeconomy.

Characterisation of bushfire residuals in source water and removal by coagulation

A bushfire is a spontaneous vegetation fire that can fundamentally affect lives, property, the environment, and even the global climate. Ash from fire carries hazardous pollutants like metal oxides/hydroxides, minerals, black carbons, and by-products of partial combustion, such as hydrocarbons and colloidal charcoal. Bushfire gases and residues can heavily pollute surface and groundwater resources. This paper focuses on the impact of bushfire residue on water quality and explores methods to remediate impacted water supplies. Soils burned in controlled furnace conditions between 150 °C, and 600 °C were characterised, suspended in water, and changes in water quality was measured following leaching from the burned residues. Results indicate that once the soil is burned at temperatures above 300 °C, there is little evidence of leached organic matter. At temperatures below 300 °C, the water discolouration was evident after 24 h leaching, and much higher quantities of leached organic matter were measured. Higher burning temperatures resulted in more alkaline residues. Leachate and charred sample characterisation data shows that the charcoal is highly porous and mainly consists of- amorphous material. The ash is a heterogeneous concoction of smaller particles and comprises significant mineral content. The results also indicate that the primary pollutant among the brushfire residuals is ash which increases pH, alkalinity, turbidity, and UV₂₅₄. Coagulation experiments reveal that dual coagulation systems with metal salts- organic polyelectrolyte reduced the turbidity by 84 %, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reduced by 68 % of water containing ash residues. However, some other treatments are needed to reduce the alkalinity.

Application of Encapsulated Quorum Quenching Strain Acinetobacter pittii HITSZ001 to a Membrane Bioreactor for Biofouling Control

Quorum quenching (QQ) is a novel anti-biofouling strategy for membrane bioreactors (MBRs) used in wastewater treatment. However, actual operation of QQ-MBR systems for wastewater treatment needs to be systematically studied to evaluate the comprehensive effects of QQ on wastewater treatment engineering applications. In this study, a novel QQ strain, Acinetobacter pittii HITSZ001, was encapsulated and applied to a MBR system to evaluate the effects of this organism on real wastewater treatment. To verify the effectiveness of immobilized QQ beads in the MBR system, we examined the MBR effluent quality and sludge characteristics. We also measured the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP) in the system to determine the effects of the organism on membrane biofouling inhibition. Additionally, changes in microbial communities in the system were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The results indicated that Acinetobacter pittii HITSZ001 is a promising strain for biofouling reduction in MBRs treating real wastewater, and that immobilization does not affect the biofouling control potential of QQ bacteria.

Electrodialysis Metathesis (EDM) Desalination for the Effective Removal of Chloride and Nitrate from Tobacco Extract: The Effect of Membrane Type

Electrodialysis Metathesis (EDM) desalination was investigated using a squad of three ion-exchange membranes (ACS, TW-A, and A3) and simulated tobacco extract liquid for selective ions removal. We have studied various factors affecting EDM desalination efficiency using a complete experimental design. First, diffusion dialysis (DD) was conducted to determine the permeation rate of different anions in tobacco liquor with different membrane materials. We conclude that A3 had the fastest permeation rate of anions. However, ACS has the lowest permeation rate for different salts. The investigation of the EDM process showed the excellent ion permeation ability of A3 by detecting the current, conductivity, and ion concentration of the target tobacco liquor in the metathesis chamber of the EDM process. The EDM had shown the most excellent chloride ion removal ability. We found that A3 was the best membrane for the EDM process of tobacco liquor.

Adsorption of Carbamazepine in All-Silica Zeolites Studied with Density Functional Theory Calculations

The anticonvulsant drug carbamazepine (-) is an emerging contaminant of considerable concern due to its hazard potential and environmental persistence. Previous experimental studies proposed hydrophobic zeolites as promising adsorbents for the removal of carbamazepine from water, but only a few framework types were considered in those investigations. In the present work, electronic structure calculations based on dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) were used to study the adsorption of CBZ in eleven all-silica zeolites having different pore sizes and connectivities of the pore system (AFI, ATS, BEA, CFI, DON, FAU, IFR, ISV, MOR, SFH, SSF framework types). It was found that some zeolites with one-dimensional channels formed by twelve-membered rings (IFR, AFI) exhibit the highest affinity towards CBZ. A "good fit" of CBZ into the zeolite pores that maximizes dispersion interactions was identified as the dominant factor determining the interaction strength. Further calculations addressed the role of temperature (for selected systems) and of guest-guest interactions between coadsorbed CBZ molecules. In addition to predicting zeolite frameworks of particular interest as materials for selective CBZ removal, the calculations presented here also contribute to the atomic-level understanding of the interaction of functional organic molecules with all-silica zeolites.

The Application of Polymer Inclusion Membranes for the Removal of Emerging Contaminants and Synthetic Dyes from Aqueous Solutions-A Mini Review

Pollution of the environment, including water resources, is currently one of the greatest challenges due to emerging new contaminants of anthropogenic origin. Of particular concern are emerging organic pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, and pesticides, but also other industrial pollutants, for example, synthetic dyes. The growing demand for environmentally friendly and economical methods of removing emerging contaminants and synthetic dyes from wastewater resulted in increased interest in the possibility of using techniques based on the application of polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) for this purpose. PIM-based techniques are promising methods for eliminating emerging contaminants and synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions, including wastewater, due to high efficiency, membranes versatility, ease/low cost of preparation, and high selectivity. This review describes the latest developments related to the removal of various emerging contaminants and synthetic dyes from aqueous solutions using PIMs over the past few years, with particular emphasis on research aimed at increasing the effectiveness and selectivity of PIMs, which may contribute to wider use of these methods in the future.

Synthesis of biochar-CoFe2O4 nanocomposite for adsorption of methylparaben from wastewater under full factorial experimental design

The presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in municipal wastewater has emerged as a threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, this study aimed to develop biochar-cobalt ferrite (BCF) nanocomposite for the removal of methylparaben from water under the full factorial experimental design of 4 factors with 3 levels (3⁴). The biochar-CoFe₂O₄ nanocomposite was developed by co-precipitation method from cobalt ferrite and biochar of Eucalyptus tree bark. Adsorbent surface morphology and functional and elemental composition were carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques which showed the presence of cracks with a rough surface, reasonable surface chemical composition, and many chemical functional groups, respectively. The experimental and predicted adsorption efficiencies ranged from 25.3 to 85.6% and 21.8 to 80.3%, respectively. The maximum adsorption performance (85.6%) reduced the methylparaben concentration from 27.5 to 4.0 mg/L at the optimum condition of adsorbent dose of 55 mg/100 mL, pH 6, contact time 90 min, and the initial methylparaben concentration of 27.5 mg/L. However, the adsorbent dose was the most influential main factor whereas the least influential was the interaction between solution pH and contact time under the regression model. The model also showed that 69% methylparaben removal was described by the regression model. The experimental data best fitted with the Freundlich model indicate multilayer adsorption which is the implication of physisorption. The sorption mechanism is attributed to Vander Waals forces, H-bonding, and dipole interaction. This BCF nanocomposite adsorbent appears to be promising for the removal of methylparaben from wastewater, but a further optimization process is essential to boost the treatment performance.

Fe3O4-Halloysite Nanotube Composites as Sustainable Adsorbents: Efficiency in Ofloxacin Removal from Polluted Waters and Ecotoxicity

The present work aimed at decorating halloysite nanotubes (HNT) with magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles through different synthetic routes (co-precipitation, hydrothermal, and sol-gel) to test the efficiency of three magnetic composites (HNT/Fe₃O₄) to remove the antibiotic ofloxacin (OFL) from waters. The chemical-physical features of the obtained materials were characterized through the application of diverse techniques (XRPD, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, and TEM microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetization measurements), while ecotoxicity was assessed through a standard test on the freshwater organism Daphnia magna. Independently of the synthesis procedure, the magnetic composites were successfully obtained. The Fe₃O₄ is nanometric (about 10 nm) and the weight percentage is sample-dependent. It decorates the HNT's surface and also forms aggregates linking the nanotubes in Fe₃O₄-rich samples. Thermodynamic and kinetic experiments showed different adsorption capacities of OFL, ranging from 23 to 45 mg g^-1. The kinetic process occurred within a few minutes, independently of the composite. The capability of the three HNT/Fe₃O₄ in removing the OFL was confirmed under realistic conditions, when OFL was added to tap, river, and effluent waters at µg L^-1 concentration. No acute toxicity of the composites was observed on freshwater organisms. Despite the good results obtained for all the composites, the sample by co-precipitation is the most performant as it: (i) is easily magnetically separated from the media after the use; (ii) does not undergo any degradation after three adsorption cycles; (iii) is synthetized through a low-cost procedure. These features make this material an excellent candidate for removal of OFL from water.

Rhodococcus: A promising genus of actinomycetes for the bioremediation of organic and inorganic contaminants

Rhodococcus is a genus of actinomycetes that has been explored by the scientific community for different purposes, especially for bioremediation uses. However, the mechanisms governing Rhodococcus-mediated bioremediation processes are far from being fully elucidated. In this sense, this work aimed to compile the recent advances in the use of Rhodococcus for the bioremediation of organic and inorganic contaminants present in different environmental compartments. We reviewed the bioremediation capacity and mechanisms of Rhodococcus spp. in the treatment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenolic substances, emerging contaminants, heavy metals, and dyes given their human health risks and environmental concern. Different bioremediation techniques were discussed, including experimental conditions, treatment efficiencies, mechanisms, and degradation pathways. The use of Rhodococcus strains in the bioremediation of several compounds is a promising approach due to their features, primarily the presence of appropriate enzyme systems, which result in high decontamination efficiencies; but that vary according to experimental conditions. Besides, the genus Rhodococcus contains a small number of opportunistic species and pathogens, representing an advantage from the point of view of safety. Advances in analytical detection techniques and Molecular Biology have been collaborating to improve the understanding of the mechanisms and pathways involved in bioremediation processes. In the context of using Rhodococcus spp. as bioremediation agents, there is a need for more studies that 1) evaluate the role of these actinomycetes on a pilot and field scale; 2) use genetic engineering tools and consortia with other microorganisms to improve the bioremediation efficiency; and 3) isolate new Rhodococcus strains from environments with extreme and/or contaminated conditions aiming to explore their adaptive capabilities for bioremediation purposes.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Environment with Emphasis on Horizontal Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) discharged into environment has several adverse impacts. PPCPs are widely utilised for veterinary as well as cosmetic and personal health reasons. These are members of the expanding class of substances known as Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs). Antibiotic resistance in the environment and garbage generated by PPCP endanger life. The World Health Organisation (WHO) now recognises antibiotic resistance as a significant global health problem due to the expected increase in mortality caused by it. In the past ten years, mounting data has led experts to believe that the environment has a significant impact on the development of resistance. For human diseases, the external environment serves as a source of resistance genes. It also serves as a major pathway for the spread of resistant bacteria among various habitats and human populations. Large-scale DNA sequencing methods are employed in this thesis to better comprehend the dangers posed by environmental antibiotic resistance. The quantification of the number is an important step in this process. Metagenomic measurement of the number of antibiotic resistance genes in various contexts is a crucial step in this process. However, it’s also crucial to put this data into a broader context by integrating things like taxonomic information, antibiotic concentrations, and the genomic locations of found resistance genes.

A scientometric analysis of research trends on emerging contaminants in the field of cancer in 2012-2021

INTRODUCTION

Recently, emerging contaminants have been discovered in the aquatic environment that can cause a range of human diseases, including cancer. In this study, our scientometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of emerging contaminants and cancer research from 2012 to 2021.

METHODS

The Web of Science Core Collection Database was used to retrieve all related publications. The bibliometix R-package, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer were applied to collect information on annual citations and publications, famous journals and authors, the most productive countries and organizations, popular topics, and keywords.

RESULTS

A total of 2378 publications were retrieved. The publication's output showed a gradual upward trend from 2012 to 2021. The most-cited paper was a review article by Vandenberg et al. that was published in 2012. According to the analysis results, the United States published the most articles. The closest collaboration was between the United States and China. Environmental Research and Science of The Total Environment published the most paper. It was Choi KC who was the most productive and had the highest h-index, g-index, and m-index among the authors. The most frequently used keywords were "exposure," "endocrine-disrupting chemicals," "endocrine disruptors," "cancer," "bisphenol-a," and so on.

DISCUSSION

Emerging contaminants play a significant role in cancer development. However, most studies are conducted in vivo with human cells or animal models, and relatively few are on human models. The scientometric analysis offers researchers a clear picture of the current state of research and hotspots in this field. From our study, researchers may find some hotspots that merit in-depth investigation.

Mechanisms and application of microalgae on removing emerging contaminants from wastewater: A review

This study reviews the development of the ability of microalgae to remove emerging contaminants (ECs) from wastewater. Contaminant removal by microalgae-based systems (MBSs) includes biosorption, bioaccumulation, biodegradation, photolysis, hydrolysis, and volatilization. Usually, the existence of ECs can inhibit microalgae growth and reduce their removal ability. Therefore, three methods (acclimation, co-metabolism, and algal-bacterial consortia) are proposed in this paper to improve the removal performance of ECs by microalgae. Finally, due to the high removal performance of contaminants from wastewater by algal-bacterial consortia systems, three kinds of algal-bacterial consortia applications (algal-bacterial activatedsludge, algal-bacterial biofilm reactor, and algal-bacterial constructed wetland system) are recommended in this paper. These applications are promising for ECs removal. But most of them are still in their infancy, and limited research has been conducted on operational mechanisms and removal processes. Extra research is needed to clarify the applicability and cost-effectiveness of hybrid processes.
