Trace metals and persistent organic pollutants in sediments from river-reservoir systems in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Spatial distribution and potential ecotoxicological effects

Differentiated cognition of the effects of human activities on typical persistent organic pollutants and bacterioplankton community in drinking water source

Accelerated urbanization in developing countries led to a typical gradient of human activities (low, moderate and high human activities), which affected the pollution characteristics and ecological functions of aquatic environment. However, the occurrence characteristics of typical persistent organic pollutants, including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and bacterioplankton associated with the gradient of human activities in drinking water sources is still lacking. Our study focused on a representative case - the upper reaches of the Dongjiang River (Pearl River Basin, China), a drinking water source characterized by a gradient of human activities. A comprehensive analysis of PAHs, OCPs and bacterioplankton in the water phase was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the Illumina platform. Moderate human activity could increase the pollution of OCPs and PAHs due to local agricultural activities. The gradient of human activities obviously influenced the bacterioplankton community composition and interaction dynamics, and low human activity resulted in low bacterioplankton diversity. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated that moderate human activity could promote a more modular organization of the bacterioplankton community. Structural equation models showed that nutrients could exert a negative influence on the composition of bacterioplankton, and this phenomenon did not change with the gradient of human activities. OCPs played a negative role in shaping bacterioplankton composition under the low and high human activities, but had a positive effect under the moderate human activity. In contrast, PAHs showed a strong positive effect on bacterioplankton composition under low and high human activities and a weak negative effect under moderate human activity. Overall, these results shed light on the occurrence characteristics of OCPs, PAHs and their ecological effects on bacterioplankton in drinking water sources along the gradient of human activities.

Distribution and ecological risk assessment of priority water pollutants in surface river sediments with emphasis on industrially affected areas

Priority water pollutants comprising six plasticizers, 18 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), 1,4-dioxane, epichlorohydrin, formaldehyde, acrylamide, and cyanides were determined in surface river sediments to assess their distribution patterns and ecological risks. Among these, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), toluene, TPH, and acrylamide were frequently found in sediments. The industrial sites had higher concentrations of ∑plasticizers (median 628 ng/g dry weight (dw)), ∑VOCs (median 3.35 ng/g dw), acrylamide (median 0.966 ng/g dw), and TPH (median 152 μg/g dw) in sediments than the mixed and non-industrial areas. The other pollutants did not show the significant differences in levels according to site types because of their relatively low detection frequencies. Volatile and soluble substances as well as hydrophobic pollutants were predominantly detected in surface sediments from industrial areas. Sediment contamination patterns were affected by the size and composition of the industrial zones around the sampling sites. The ecological risks determined using the sediment quality guidelines (DEHP, VOCs, and TPH) and the mean probable effect level quotients (DEHP) were mostly acceptable. However, the two most representative industrial regions (the largest industrial area and the first industrial city) showed risks of concern for DEHP and TPH.

Harnessing the potential of pigeonpea and maize feedstock biochar for carbon sequestration, energy generation, and environmental sustainability

Crop residues in agriculture pose disposal challenges and contribute to air pollution when burned. This study aims to use pigeonpea and maize stalks to produce biochar at different pyrolysis temperatures. Biochar can serve in carbon sequestration, as a soil amendment, and as an alternative fuel source. Pyrolysis was conducted at 400, 500, and 600 °C to examine the effects on physicochemical properties, fuel, and energy related properties. Increase in temperatures resulted in decrease of biochar yield, volatile matter, and O/C and H/C atomic ratios, while ash content and essential nutrients increased. Yield was observed to be higher in pigeonpea stalks derived biochar compared to maize stalks derived biochar at same pyrolysis temperatures. The yields of pigeonpea stalks derived biochar at 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C are 34, 33 and 29%, respectively, and the yields of maize biomass-derived biochar at 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C are 29, 28, and 26%, respectively. The organic carbon content is found to be higher in the biochar samples prepared at 600 °C, i.e., 10.44%, and 10.39% for pigeonpea and maize-derived biochar, respectively. The essential elements of biochar were increased with an increase in pyrolysis temperature except nitrogen which is conversely related to temperature. The biochar obtained through pyrolysis at 400 °C demonstrated superior characteristics compared to biochar produced at other temperatures. It exhibited a higher biochar yield, with approximately 84.60% for pigeonpea and 64.85% for maize fixed carbon content. Additionally, the energy retention efficiency was higher, reaching 67.33% for pigeonpea and 42.70% for maize-derived biochar at a pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C. The fixed carbon recovery efficiency was also notable at around 200.44% for PPS and 142.37% for maize biochar which is higher compared to biochar produced at other temperatures. Furthermore, the higher heating value (HHV) was approximately 30.75 MJ kg-1 for both the biochars, indicating their suitability as alternative solid fuels. A significant CO2 reduction potential of 84 CO2 eq kg-1 and 55 CO2 eq kg-1 was observed for pigeonpea and maize biochar, respectively. Hence, biochar is a promising and effective option for carbon sequestration, offering environmental benefits.

Synergistic/antagonistic toxicity characterization and source-apportionment of heavy metals and organophosphorus pesticides by the biospectroscopy-bioreporter-coupling approach

Many anthropogenic chemicals are manufactured and eventually enter the surrounding environment, threatening food security and human health. Considering the additive or synergistic effects of pollutant mixtures, there is an expanding need for rapid, cost-effective and field-portable screening methods in environmental monitoring. This study used a recently developed biospectroscopy-bioreporter-coupling (BBC) approach to investigate the binary toxicity of Ag(I), Cr(VI) and four organophosphorus pesticides (dichlorvos, parathion, omethoate and monocrotophos). Ag(I) and Cr(VI) altered the toxicity mechanisms of pesticides, explained by the synergistic or antagonistic effect of Ag/Cr-induced cytotoxicity and pesticide-induced genotoxicity. The discriminating Raman spectral peaks associated with organophosphorus pesticides were 1585 and 1682 cm-1, but 750, 1004, 1306 and 1131 cm-1 were found in heavy metal and pesticide mixtures. More spectral alterations were related to pesticides rather than Ag(I) or Cr(VI), hinting at the dominant toxicity mechanisms of pesticides in mixtures. Ag(I) supplement significantly increased the levels of reactive oxygen species induced by organophosphorus pesticides, attributing to the increased permeability of cell membrane and entrance of toxic substances into the cells by the oligodynamic actions. This study lends deeper insights into the interactions between microbes and pollutant mixtures, offering clues to assess the cocktail effects of multiple pollutants comprehensively.

Insights into mechanism of DNA damage and repair-apoptosis in digestive gland of female scallop Chlamys farreri under benzo[a]pyrene exposure during reproductive stage

As one of the most carcinogenic persistent organic pollutants (POPs), benzo[a]pyrene (B [a]P) brings high toxicity to marine bivalves. Digestive gland is the most important metabolism-related organ of aquatic animals. This study conducted the digestive gland transcriptome of Chlamys farreri under B[a]P treatment at reproductive stages. And the reproductive-stage dependence metabolism-DNA repair-apoptosis process of scallops under 0, 0.04, 0.4 and 4 μg/L B[a]P was studied by qRT-PCR. The results demonstrated that the detoxification metabolism was disturbed after ovulation except for CYP3A4. In antioxidant system, antioxidant enzyme CAT and GPX, and GGT1 (one of the non-enzymatic antioxidants synthesis gene) continuously served the function of antioxidant defense. Three types of DNA repair were activated under B[a]P stress, however, DNA strand breaks were still serious. B[a]P exposure weakened death receptor pathway as well as enhanced mitochondrial pathway, surprisingly suppressing apoptosis in scallops. In addition, ten indicators were screened by Spearman correlation analysis. This study will provide sound theoretical basis for bivalve toxicology and contribute to the biomonitoring of marine POPs pollution.

A comprehensive assessment, source input determination and distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) along with heavy metals (HMs) in reservoir lake sediments from Çanakkale province, Türkiye

This study presents the distribution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) in the sediments from four dams and two ponds in the Çanakkale city, Türkiye. The total concentration varied from 41.47 to 145.45 ng/g d.w. for PAHs; 1.40-14.96 ng/g d.w. for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 0.13-3.31 ng/g d.w. for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The total polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (∑PCDD/Fs) concentrations varied between 7.35 and 63.46 pg/g d.w. The HM distribution in sediments ranged from 9.41 to 21.13 mg/kg d.w. for As; 0.20-0.39 mg/kg d.w. for Cd; 19.4-281.68 mg/kg d.w. for Cr; 23.50-118.25 mg/kg d.w. for Pb and 118.9-374.82 mg/kg d.w. for Zn. This paper also elucidates possible sources of POP and HMs in sediment by using diagnostic ratios. The calculated ratios were shown that anthropogenic input is the source of these pollutants in sediments. Principal component analysis showed that the low molecular weight of POPs is considerably related and correlated, while high molecular weight pollutants have made another group and highly correlated with each other. The results indicated that anthropogenic pollution is mainly related to atmospheric input. Anthropogenic pollutants are more apparent at Atikhisar and Bakacak dams close to urbanized locations. Rather than the anthropogenic impact, based on the measured data interpretation, the global climate change effect was seen in Bakacak dam. The overall concentration of all pollutants revealed that Atikhisar and Bakacak sediments are high-level polluted areas according to several types of sediment guidelines.

Effects of organic carbon burial on biomarker component changes in contamination in northeast Dianchi watershed

The upper reaches of the Yangtze River have experienced increasing anthropogenic stress. Quantitative tracing of carbon (C) sources and ecological risks through biomarkers i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes is significant for C neutrality and sequestration. Here, source and sink patterns, and factors influencing C burial and biomarker components in a small catchment of Dianchi Lake were explored. The sediment core covered the period 1855-2019. Before 1945, the organic C accumulation rate (OCAR) ranged from 0.71 to 5.12 mg cm^-2 yr^-1, and the PAHs and n-alkanes fluxes were 106.99-616.09 ng cm^-2 yr^-1 and 5.56-31.37 μg cm^-2 yr^-1. During 1945-2005, the OCAR, PAH, and n-alkane burial rapidly increased from 3.19 to 16.17 mg cm^-2 yr^-1, 230.40 to 2538.81 ng cm^-2 yr^-1, and 11.63 to 61.90 μg cm^-2 yr^-1. During 1855-2019, deposition fluxes of PAHs and n-alkanes increased 13.01 and 9.14 times, resulting in increased C burial, driven by environmental changes. A PMF model and the diagnostic ratio indicated that PAHs from coal combustion and traffic emission increased from 22.32% to 65.20% during 1855-2019. The PAH concentrations reflected normal-moderate contamination and potential risks to the aquatic environment. The results facilitate a comprehensive understanding of anthropogenic-driven interactions between increasing OC burial and ecological risks.

Ecological risk assessment and phytomanagement of trace metals in the sediments of mangroves associated with the Ramsar sites of Kerala, southern India

The study investigated trace metal accumulation in the sediments of three major mangrove ecosystems associated with the Ramsar sites of Kerala state, the ecological risks they pose, and the absorption, accumulation, and translocation of metals in five dominant mangrove species, as these systems are heavily impacted by anthropogenic interventions. The trace metal concentrations (mg kg^-1) in the sediment of different mangrove habitats of Kerala ranged from 20 to 295 for Cu, 65 to 350 for Zn, 72 to 151 for Pb, 11 to 210 for Ni, 42 to 228 for Mn, 0 to 6 for Cd,124 to 565 for Cr, and 0 to 2.9 for Ag. An overall enrichment of metals was recorded in sediment, exceeding the prescribed effects range median (ERM) of consensus-based sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for Cu and Cr concentrations at Munroe Island and Ni at Vypin, indicating a detrimental risk to biota in the sediments. Principal component analysis and a higher geoaccumulation index indicated the contribution of trace metals from industries, agricultural runoff, and urban waste disposal. The ecological risk index suggested that cadmium poses a very high risk to the mangrove ecosystem at Vypin. Furthermore, the bioconcentration factor for various trace metals in Avicennia marina and Lumnitzera racemosa in Ayiramthengu was > 2, suggesting that these species can accumulate trace metals, particularly Cr, Cd, and Pb. Further, our findings suggest that A. marina may be considered as an efficient metal trap for Cd in aerial parts, as indicated by the significant translocation factor (> 1) combined with the bioconcentration factor. Therefore, the study revealed that Munroe island and Vypin had a considerable level of contamination for toxic metals and Avicennia marina could be a promising candidate species for the phytoremediation of these trace metals in the coastal settings of Kerala state.

Spatial Distribution, Source Identification, and Potential Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metal in Surface Sediments from River-Reservoir System in the Feiyun River Basin, China

To investigate the pollution characteristics of the surface sediments of the river-reservoir system in the Feiyun River basin, a sediment heavy metal survey was conducted for the first time in the Feiyun River basin. Surface sediments from 21 sampling sites in the Feiyun River basin were collected, and the concentrations and spatial distribution characteristics of 15 heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Mn, V, Co, Mo, Sb, W, Fe, and Se) were analyzed. Three heavy metal ecological risk assessment methods were used to evaluate the potential risks of heavy metals in sediments, and the sources of major heavy metals were traced by correlation analysis and principal component analysis. The results show that (1) the average concentration of heavy metals (As) (212.64 mg/kg) and (Sb) (4.89 mg/kg) in Feiyun River Basin is 33.3 and 6.89 times the background value of Zhejiang Province; the overall spatial distribution of heavy metals is: the mainstream of Feiyun River > Zhaoshandu Reservoir > Shanxi Reservoir, thereby, the pollution is relatively significant; (2) by processing the geo-accumulation index and enrichment index methods, As and Sb are classified as 'severely polluted', 'moderately severely polluted' and 'severely polluted', 'very severe polluted' respectively; (3) the potential ecological index evaluates the surface sediments in the Feiyun River Basin as a very high risk level, the main environmental risk factors are As, Sb, Cd and Mo; (4) the principal component analysis results show that the heavy metals in the sediments of the Feiyun River Basin may be mainly affected by human activities such as sewage from domestic and agricultural activities, mining and smelting, and the others are affected by natural factors.

Insights into disruption of lipid metabolism in digestive gland of female scallop Chlamys farreri under B[a]P exposure

Lipids are the main energy support during gametogenesis. Digestive gland is the key organ of aquatic animal metabolism for storing nutrition and supplying energy. It participates in a variety of life activities (such as growth, digestion, immunity, and reproduction). Nutrients stored in digestive glands, especially lipids, provide energy for reproductive behaviors such as gametogenesis and ovulation. A large number of studies have confirmed the accumulation of lipids from digestive gland to gonad during gametogenesis. At present, the research on the interference mechanism of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on lipid metabolism of aquatic animals and the adaptive response of aquatic animals to POPs stress focus on biochemical levels or a few genes. The potential molecular mechanism of lipid metabolism interference needs to be further studied. In addition, as an important stage of aquatic animals, the reproductive period is a vigorous period of lipid metabolism. However, at present, there is no report on the molecular mechanism of POPs interfering with the lipid metabolism of the digestive gland in the reproductive process of aquatic animals. In this study, female scallop C. farreri was cultured in natural seawater and exposed to 4 μg/L B[a]P in seawater. Transcriptome analysis of digestive glands at multiple stages (proliferative stage, growth stage, mature stage and spawn stage) was performed, and iPath pathway analysis was used to analyze lipid metabolism pathways and differential genes. The interference mechanism of lipid metabolism in bivalves during reproductive period was revealed. This study will provide valuable genomic information on the role of digestive glands in lipid metabolism and reproduction of C. farreri, and will contribute to further functional genomics of bivalves and other closely related species.

Microbial diversity alteration reveals biomarkers of contamination in soil-river-lake continuum

Microbial communities inhabiting soil-water-sediment continuum in coastal areas provide important ecosystem services. Their adaptation in response to environmental stressors, particularly mitigating the impact of pollutants discharged from human activities, has been considered for the development of microbial biomonitoring tools, but their use is still in the infancy. Here, chemical and molecular (16S rRNA gene metabarcoding) approaches were combined in order to determine the impact of pollutants on microbial assemblages inhabiting the aquatic network of a soil-water-sediment continuum around the Ichkeul Lake (Tunisia), an area highly impacted by human activities. Samples were collected within the soil-river-lake continuum at three stations in dry (summer) and wet (winter) seasons. The contaminant pressure index (PI), which integrates Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkanes, Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and metal contents, and the microbial pressure index microgAMBI, based on bacterial community structure, showed significant correlation with contamination level and differences between seasons. The comparison of prokaryotic communities further revealed specific assemblages for soil, river and lake sediments. Correlation analyses identified potential "specialist" genera for the different compartments, whose abundances were correlated with the pollutant type found. Additionally, PICRUSt analysis revealed the metabolic potential for pollutant transformation or degradation of the identified "specialist" species, providing information to estimate the recovery capacity of the ecosystem. Such findings offer the possibility to define a relevant set of microbial indicators for assessing the effects of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. Microbial indicators, including the detection of "specialist" and sensitive taxa, and their functional capacity, might be useful, in combination with integrative microbial indices, to constitute accurate biomonitoring tools for the management and restoration of complex coastal aquatic systems.

A translocation analysis of organophosphate pesticides between surface water, sediments and tissues of common reed Phragmites australis

This study investigated the ability of common reed, Phragmites australis to take up organophosphate pesticides (OPPs). The study site was the agriculturally polluted Sundays Estuary in South Africa. Surface water, leaves, roots, and deep-rooted-sediments of P. australis were collected along the length of the estuary and analysed for 13 different OPPS. The extraction of OPPs in plant tissues was performed by QuEChERS method followed by GC-MS analysis. The highest concentration of OPPs was found in leaves (16.41-31.39 μg kg^-1 dw), followed by roots (13.92-30.88 μg kg^-1 dw), and sediments (3.30-8.07 μg kg^-1 dw). Of the 13 targeted OPPs, only one compound was not detected across the four sample matrices, thus reflecting widespread contamination in the Sundays Estuary. The biota sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) values of pyraclofos, quinalphos, fenitrothion, phosalone, EPN, diazinon, chlorpyrifos, pyrazophos, and isazophos were higher than one implying that P. australis possesses the ability to bioaccumulate these compounds. The root-leaf translocation factors (TF_r-l) of these pesticides were higher than 1, suggesting that P. australis possesses the capacity to move these pesticides from roots to leaves. The insignificant correlation observed between log BSAF and log K_ow and log TF_r-l and log K_ow implies that OPPs uptake by P. australis tissues were not dependent on log Kow. Our study demonstrates that P. australis possesses the potential to effectively remove OPPs from contaminated water and sediment.

Diversity, Functions and Antibiotic Resistance of Sediment Microbial Communities From Lake Geneva Are Driven by the Spatial Distribution of Anthropogenic Contamination

Lake sediments are natural receptors for a wide range of anthropogenic contaminants including organic matter and toxicants such as trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls that accumulate over time. This contamination can impact benthic communities, including microorganisms which play a crucial role in biogeochemical cycling and food-webs. The present survey aimed at exploring whether anthropogenic contamination, at a large lake scale, can influence the diversity, structure and functions of microbial communities associated to surface sediment, as well as their genetic potential for resistance to metals and antibiotics. Changes in the characteristics of these communities were assessed in surface sediments collected in Lake Geneva from eight sampling sites in October 2017 and May 2018. These sampling sites were characterized by a large concentration range of metal and organic compound contamination. Variation between the two sampling periods were very limited for all sampling sites and measured microbial parameters. In contrast, spatial variations were observed, with two sites being distinct from each other, and from the other six sites. Benthic communities from the most contaminated sampling site (Vidy Bay, near the city of Lausanne) were characterized by the lowest bacterial and archaeal diversity, a distinct community composition, the highest abundance of antibiotic resistance genes and functional (respiration, denitrification, methanogenesis, phosphatase, and beta-glucosidase) activity levels. The second sampling site which is highly influenced by inputs from the Rhône River, exhibited low levels of diversity, a distinct community composition, high abundance of antibiotic resistance genes and the highest bacterial abundance. Overall, our results suggest that local anthropogenic contamination, including organic matter and toxicants, is a major driver of the diversity and functioning of sediment-microbial communities in Lake Geneva. This highlights the need to consider benthic microbial communities and a suite of complementary ecotoxicological endpoints for more effective environmental risk assessments of contaminants in lake sediments.

Evaluation of metal contamination in mangrove ecosystems near oil refining areas using chemometric tools and geochemical indexes

The northern and northeastern portion of the Todos os Santos Bay (TSB) is known for the presence of an oil refinery in addition to the development of other activities with significant potential for impact on the environment. 30 samples of superficial mangrove sediment were collected in two different locations: on the banks of the São Paulo River near the Landulpho Alves Mataripe Refinery (RLAM) and at Caboto Beach, a place that was once a control point in studies of metal pollution. After the determination of potentially toxic elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, Zn), the quality of the sediment was evaluated using the concentrations of these elements associated with geochemical parameters (TOC, P, S, and granulometry). In this way, the pollution indexes (EF, I_geo, P_N) were calculated in addition to the comparison with the guide values for the sediment quality (TEL, PEL, ERL, ERM). Among the elements analyzed, Cu also showed levels (92.71-97.54 mg kg^-1) very close to PEL (108 mg kg^-1). At 13 sampling points, Cr concentrations were higher (56.16-66.01 mg kg^-1) than TEL (52.3 mg kg^-1). Ba showed significant concentrations in 6 samples collected on the São Paulo River, a region close to the oil refining area. The enrichment factor (EF) showed that most elements did not show enrichment, except for Zn. Through Igeo there was a tendency towards serious pollution of Ba, Cu, and Zn; moderately polluted by Cr. Principal component analysis (PCA) and Spearman's classification showed a correlation greater than 70% between the variables. According to Nemerow Synthetic Pollution (P_N), both areas are polluted by Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Ti, V, and Zn.

Underestimated heavy metal pollution of the Minjiang River, SE China: Evidence from spatial and seasonal monitoring of suspended-load sediments

Previous assessments on rivers in SE China with highly developed economy and enormous population indicate diverse and relatively low particulate heavy metal pollution levels. However, the controlling mechanisms for heavy metal enrichment and transport remain enigmatic. Here, we target a mesoscale mountainous river, the Minjiang River, and obtain grain size, mineralogical and heavy metal concentration (Pb, Cd, Cr, Mn, Mo, Zn, V, Co, Ni, Cu) data from seasonal suspended particulate matter (SPM) near the river mouth, riverbed sediments and SPM samples from mainstream and major tributaries of the river. The results indicate that SPM samples have higher particulate heavy metal concentrations than riverbed sediments collected in pairs. Heavy metal concentrations of Cd, Zn, Cr, V, Co, Ni and Cu are higher in upstream SPM samples than those in downstream regions, whereas Pb, Mn and Mo concentrations don't show this spatial variation. Most heavy metals (e.g., Pb and Zn) show high concentrations in flood seasons and relatively low concentrations in dry seasons, revealing a hydrologic control. However, Cr and Mn show high concentrations in some dry season samples, suggesting incidental anthropogenic input events. The SPM-based pollution assessments using enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index demonstrate that the Minjiang River is moderately to strongly polluted by particulate Pb, Cd, Mo and Zn contaminations and most particulate heavy metals have moderate to considerable potential ecological risks. We contend that transport and discharge of particulate heavy metals by the Minjiang River are controlled by both natural and anthropogenic forcings and the pollution levels are worse than previously known. Our findings suggest that particulate heavy metal discharge by subtropical mountainous rivers is related to sediment types and hydrologic characteristics. Therefore, high-spatiotemporal-resolution investigations on river SPM samples are highly recommended to better evaluate particulate heavy metal pollution levels and aquatic environmental conditions.

Occurrence of organic micropollutants and human health risk assessment based on consumption of Amaranthus viridis, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The contamination of water resource and food chain by persistent organic pollutants (POPs) constitutes a major environmental and human health concern worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of POPs in irrigation water, soil and in Amaranthus viridis (A. viridis) from different gardening sites in Kinshasa to evaluate the potential environmental and human health risks. A survey study for the use of pesticides and fertilizers was carried out with 740 market gardeners. The levels of POPs (including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) were analyzed in irrigation water and 144 vegetable samples collected from different gardening sites. The assessment of potential human health risk was estimated by calculating daily intake and toxic equivalency to quantify the carcinogenicity. The results show highest PAH levels in A. viridis from all studied sites. The concentrations of the sum of seven PCBs (Σ7PCB_S) congeners in analyzed plants ranged between 15.89 and 401.36 ng g^-1. The distributions of OCPs in both water and A. viridis were congener specific, chlorpyrifos-ethyl and p,p'-DDE were predominantly detected. Among PBDEs, only BDE47 was quantified with noticeable concentration in A. viridis, while no PBDEs were detected in irrigation water. Higher estimated daily intake values indicate that consuming leafy vegetables might associate with increased human health risks. However, calculated incremental lifetime cancer risk values indicates no potential carcinogenic risk for the local population. The results of this study provide important information on A. viridis contamination by POPs and strongly recommend implementing the appropriate measures to control the use of chemicals used in studied gardening areas. Thus in Kinshasa, urban agriculture control programs for POPs and fertilizers is very important in order to protect the public health through direct and dietary exposure pathways.

Temporal transcriptome analysis in female scallop Chlamys farreri: First molecular insights into the disturbing mechanism on lipid metabolism of reproductive-stage dependence under benzo[a]pyrene exposure

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the most widespread persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in marine environment. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), the most toxic carcinogen of PAHs, is widely studied as a representative that interferes with lipid metabolism. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism by B[a]P interference towards bivalve, one of the marine-pollution bio-indicators have not been elucidated yet, especially during gonadal development which is closely associated with lipids. In this study, female scallops Chlamys farreri were cultured with natural and 4 μg/L B[a]P exposed seawater, respectively, and a multi-stage (proliferative, growth, mature, and spawn stage) ovarian transcriptome profiling was performed to decipher the reproductive stage-dependence disturbing mechanisms on lipid metabolism caused by B[a]P in bivalves. The results revealed the potential molecular mechanism of B[a]P-induced triglycerides (TGs) accumulation, which probably resulted from the collaboration of promoting synthesis and inhibiting metabolization of TGs, notably, this mechanism also occurred at spawn stage. Correspondingly, B[a]P and TGs contents measured in ovary offered direct biochemical evidences for the interference effects and stage-dependent accumulation patterns of B[a]P. Moreover, the gene expressions of fatty acids synthesis related enzymes were down-regulated cooperatively, illustrating the molecular compensatory mechanism that reduced susceptibility from oxidative damage. And these results further emphasized the important role of prostaglandins (PGs) in immune response mediated by arachidonic acid metabolism. In addition, this study explored the underlying molecular mechanism affected by B[a]P on sterol metabolism, which possibly posed a threat to normal reproductive functions in bivalves. Taken together, our findings filled the gap of the stage-dependent interference molecular mechanisms on lipid metabolism behind bivalves, and provided a new perspective for investigating the adaptive mechanisms of bivalves under POPs stress.

Alternative sorption filter materials effectively remove non-particulate organic pollutants from stormwater

Urban runoff contains a mixture of both particulate and non-particulate organic pollutants (OPs). Hydrophobic OPs such as higher petroleum hydrocarbons, phthalates, and polycyclic organic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are not exclusively bound to particles, but also present in runoff in colloidal and truly dissolved forms. These hydrophobic compounds can also form nano- and microsized emulsions that may carry pollutants in stormwater. Hence, it is of great importance to develop treatment technologies such as sorption filters that can remove non-particulate OPs from contaminated stormwater. A pilot plant using column bed-filters of sand as a pre-filter, in combination with granulated activated carbon, Sphagnum peat or Pinus sylvestris bark, was used to investigate the removal of non-particulate OPs from urban stormwater. Samples from the filter effluents were collected weekly; during or after rain events; and during stress tests when incoming water was spiked with contaminated sediment and petrol or diesel. All sorption filters showed efficient reduction of aliphatic diesel hydrocarbons C₁₆-C₃₅, benzene, and the PAHs phenanthrene, fluoranthene, and pyrene during most of the operation time, which was 18 months. During the stress test events, all sorption filters showed 100% reduction of PAH-16, petrol and diesel aliphatics C₅-C₃₅. All sorption filters released DOC and nanoparticles, which may explain some of the transportation of OPs through the filter beds. The recommendation is to use a combination of sand pre-filtration and all the studied sorption materials in stormwater filters in series, to achieve effective removal of different types of OPs. It is also important to improve the hydraulic conditions to obtain sufficient water flows through the filters.

Impact of anthropogenic activities on the occurrence and distribution of toxic metals, extending-spectra β-lactamases and carbapenem resistance in sub-Saharan African urban rivers

The occurrence and dissemination of toxic metals, antibiotic resistant bacteria and their resistance genes (ARGs) in the aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan African countries are still understudied, despite their potential to threat human health and aquatic organisms. In this context, the co-contamination and seasonal distribution of toxic metals and ARG in river sediments receiving untreated urban sewages and hospital effluents from Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were investigated. ARGs including β-lactam resistance (bla_CTX-M and bla_SHV), carbapenem resistance (bla_VIM, bla_IMP, bla_KPC, bla_OXA-48 and bla_NDM) and total bacterial load were quantified by using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in total DNA extracted from sediment. The amount of toxic metals in sediments was quantified using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results highlight high abundance of 16S rRNA and ARGs copy numbers in sediment samples. Strong pollution of rivers by toxic metals was found, with max values (mg kg^-1) of 81.85(Cr), 5.09(Co), 33.84(Ni), 203.46 (Cu), 1055.92(Zn), 324.24(Pb) and 2.96(Hg). Results also highlight the high abundance of bacterial markers (8.06 × 10⁹-2.42 × 10¹² 16S rRNA/g^-1 DS) as well as antibiotic resistance genes (up to 4.58 × 10⁸ ARG. g^-1 DS) in the studied rivers. Significant correlations were observed between (i) metals (except Cd and Hg) and organic matter (R > 0.60, p < 0.05); and (ii) ARGs (except bla_NDM) and 16S rRNA (R > 0.57, p < 0.05) suggesting a tight link between (i) metal contamination and anthropogenic pressure and (ii) microbial contamination of river and dissemination of antibiotic resistance. Results demonstrated that multi-diffuse pollution originating from human activity contribute to the spread of toxic metals and ARGs into the aquatic ecosystems.

Heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants contamination in river, estuary, and marine sediments from Atlantic Coast of Democratic Republic of the Congo

The pollution assessment and the evaluation of potential risks in the Atlantic Coastal Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are still very limited. Consequently, the present study investigates for the first time the concentrations of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) in river, estuary, and marine sediments from this area. The results highlighted high concentrations of Cr, Zn, As, and Pb exceeding the probable effect level (PEL) on aquatic life. Zn was the most dominant element detected at a range of 180-480 mg kg^-1 in marine sediment, 132-382 mg kg^-1 in estuary sediment, and 121-687 mg kg^-1 in river sediment. Total PCBs (∑7 × 4.3) ranged from 1995 to 20,156 μg kg^-1, 2013-12,058 μg kg^-1, and 1861-36,417 μg kg^-1 in marine, estuary, and river sediments, respectively. Total PCBs (∑7 × 4.3) were above PEL for all sediments, suggesting potential adverse effects on benthic organisms. The OCP, PBDE, and PAH levels were low to moderate for all sediments. Taking into consideration, the concentrations of Zn, Pb, PCBs, and DDTs, probable environmental risks, are present.

A preliminary study on upstream migration of mangroves in response to changing environment along River Hooghly, India

Environmental changes and anthropogenic activities can be linked to altered distribution and abundance of species. However, the ecological impacts of change in the microenvironment have not been well documented. Herein, we have identified the distribution of mangroves and associated species and characterized surface sediment and water samples along the banks of River Hooghly. The application of Combined Mangrove Recognition Index (CMRI) and its validation with the available ground data on satellite image of 2015 indicates that some mangrove species have reclaimed the upper course of the river, which was earlier absent before 1995. This study is the first report on the upstream migration of mangrove species such as Sonneratia caseolaris, Sonneratia apetala, Derris trifoliata, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and Thespesia populnea in River Hooghly. The changes in pollution load, varied sedimentation pattern, high chemical oxygen demand, mean sea-level rise, and anthropogenic activity might have played a significant role in the upstream migration of mangroves.

Spatial-temporal distribution and transport flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a large hydropower reservoir of Southeast China: Implication for impoundment impacts

In order to investigate the impacts of dam-related water impoundment on the spatial-temporal variations and transport of anthropogenic organic pollutants, 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in water samples from the Shuikou Reservoir (SKR) of the Minjiang River. The SKR was formed after the construction of the Shuikou Dam, which is the largest hydropower station in Southeast China. The water samples were collected from the backwater zone of the SKR, in both the wet and dry seasons, corresponding to the drainage and impoundment periods of water flow, respectively. The concentrations of the dissolved PAHs in surface water from the wet season (average of 161 ± 97 ng L^-1) were significantly higher (ANOVA, p < 0.01) than those from the dry season (average of 43 ± 21 ng L^-1). PAH concentrations in the SKR decreased from upstream (industrialized cities) to downstream (rural towns or counties), indicating high PAH loads caused by intensive urbanization effects. The high proportions of 3-ring PAHs in the wet season were from local sources via surface runoff; while the elevated proportions of 4- to 6- ring PAHs in the dry season reflected atmospheric deposition emerged of these PAHs and/or volatilization of 3-ring PAHs enhanced. Molecular diagnostic ratios of PAH isomers in multimedium and principal component analysis indicated that PAH presence in the SKR was mainly attributed to pyrogenic origin. The isomeric ratios of fluoranthene to fluoranthene plus pyrene in the wet season were homogeneous, implying that there were continuous new inputs along the riverine runoff. However, these ratios showed spatial downward trend in the dry season, indicating continued degradation of PAHs occurred along the transport path during the impoundment period. The input and output fluxes of PAHs in the SKR were 5330 kg yr^-1 and 2991 kg yr^-1, revealing that the reservoir retained contaminants after impoundment of the hydropower dam.

Occurrence and treatment of contaminants of emerging concern in the African aquatic environment: Literature review and a look ahead

Awareness about the rising detection and reported (eco)toxicological effects of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs, e.g. pharmaceuticals and personal care products - PPCPs - and modern pesticides) in the aquatic environment is growing. CECs are increasingly reported in the African aquatic environment, although the amount of data available is still limited. In this work, a comprehensive review is presented on the occurrence of CECs in wastewater, sludge, surface water, sediment, groundwater and drinking water of Africa. Further attention is given to the performance of wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs) and trickling filters (TF) with respect to CECs removal. For the first time, we also look at the state of knowledge on the performance of point-of-use technologies (POUs) regarding the removal of CECs in drinking water. Generally, CECs in Africa occur at the same order of magnitude as in the Western world. However, for particular groups of compounds and at specific locations such as informal settlements, clearly higher concentrations are reported in Africa. Whereas antiretroviral and antimalarial drugs are rarely detected in the Western world, occurrence patterns in Africa reveal concentrations up to >100 μg L^-1. Removal efficiencies of WSPs and TFs focus mainly on PPCPs and vary significantly, ranging from no removal (e.g. carbamazepine) to better than 99.9% (e.g. paracetamol). Despite the rising adoption of POUs, limited but promising information is available on their performance regarding CECs treatment in drinking water, particularly for the low-cost devices (e.g. ceramic filters and solar disinfection - SODIS) being adopted in Africa and other developing countries.

Environmental media exert a bottleneck in driving the dynamics of antibiotic resistance genes in modern aquatic environment

With the rapid construction of dams worldwide, reservoir system has become a representation of modern aquatic environment. However, the profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and associated factor influencing their dynamics in modern aquatic environment (e.g., water phase, sediment phase, and soil phase) are largely unknown. Here, we comprehensively characterized the diversity, abundance, distribution of ARGs in a large drinking water reservoir using high-throughput quantitative PCR, as well as ranked the factors (e.g., mobile genetic elements (MGEs), bacteria community, bacterial biomass, antibiotics, and basic properties) influencing the profiles of ARGs on the basis of structural equation models (SEMs). Water phase was prone to harbor more diverse ARGs as compared to sediment phase and soil phase, and soil phase in drawdown area was a potential reservoir and hotspot for ARGs. Environmental media partially affected the ARG diversity in modern aquatic environment, while it observably influenced the distributions of ARGs and MGEs and their co-occurrence patterns. The pathways for the proliferation and spread of ARGs in water phase were both the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and vertical gene transfer (VGT), while the dominant pathways in sediment phase and soil phase were the HGT and VGT, respectively. The SEMs demonstrated that MGEs contributed the most to drive the ARG dynamics in both water phase and sediment phase, while the most dominant factor for this in soil phase was bacterial community. Overall, environmental media exerted a bottleneck in driving the dynamics of ARGs in modern aquatic environment probably via diversifying the MGEs, bacterial community, bacterial biomass, antibiotics and basic properties.

Bacterial community assemblages in sediments under high anthropogenic pressure at Ichkeul Lake/Bizerte Lagoon hydrological system, Tunisia

Bacterial communities inhabiting sediments in coastal areas endure the effect of strong anthropogenic pressure characterized by the presence of multiple contaminants. Understanding the effect of pollutants on the organization of bacterial communities is of paramount importance in order to unravel bacterial assemblages colonizing specific ecological niches. Here, chemical and molecular approaches were combined to investigate the bacterial communities inhabiting the sediments of the Ichkeul Lake/Bizerte Lagoon, a hydrological system under anthropogenic pressure. Although the microbial community of the Ichkeul Lake sediment was different to that of the Bizerte Lagoon, common bacterial genera were identified suggesting a lake-lagoon continuum probably due to the hydrology of the system exchanging waters according to the season. These genera represent bacterial "generalists" maintaining probably general biogeochemical functions. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) showed significant differential abundance distribution of bacterial genera according to the habitat, the pollution type and level. Further, correlation analyses identified specific bacterial genera which abundance was linked with pesticides concentrations in the lake, while in the lagoon the abundance of specific bacterial genera was found linked with the concentrations of PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and organic forms of Sn. As well, bacterial genera which abundance was not correlated with the concentrations of pollutants were identified in both lake and lagoon. These findings represent valuable information, pointing out specific bacterial genera associated with pollutants, which represent assets for developing bacterial tools for the implementation, the management, and monitoring of bioremediation processes to mitigate the effect of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems.

Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk of trace metals and organic pollutants in surface sediments from a Southeastern European river (Someşu Mic River, Romania)

The increasing contamination of fresh water resources by trace metals and persistent organic pollutants is a major environmental concern. In the present study, we investigated, for the first time, the distribution, sources and ecological risk of trace metals and organic pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), in surface sediments from a Southeastern European river (Someşu Mic River, Romania). Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn ranged from 0.04 to 0.4, 9.4 to 43.15, 7.2 to 65.6, 12.3 to 131.4, 14.7 to 47.7 and 42.1 to 236.8 mg kg^-1 dw, respectively. Concentrations of total PAHs, PCBs and OCPs ranged from 24.8 to 575.6, 2.7 to 252.7 and 2.1 to 44.3 ng g^-1 dw, respectively. Some sediment parameters, i.e., pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic matter (OM) contents, played a significant role in the spatial distribution of contaminants. A combined analysis based on diagnostic ratios and multivariate analyses revealed PAHs originating mainly from pyrolytic sources. PCB compositions showed distinct contamination signatures for tri- to tetra-chlorinated PCBs, characteristic of contamination by Aroclor-1016 and -1254 technical mixtures. The dominant OCP congeners were α-HCH and p,p'-DDD, reflecting past use of technical HCHs and DDTs in agricultural practices. Metal source and pollution status was assessed using geoaccumulation index and enrichment factor, which indicate widespread pollution by Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni and Cu. The use of Sediments Quality Guidelines (SQGs), mean effect range-median quotient (m-ERM-Q) and toxic equivalent factor (TEF) indicated that the highest ecological risks occurred for PCBs and DDTs. This work presents not only initial baseline information on the extent of organic and inorganic contaminations in a river of ecological and economical interest, but also provides a diagnostic ratio/statistical combined approach that can be used to evaluate sediment quality in similar environments.

Contamination assessment and prediction of 27 trace elements in sediment core from an urban lake associated with land use

A sediment core was sampled in an urban lake in southern Brazil, and the presence of 27 trace elements was assessed. The geochronology showed that the core corresponds to the period from 1914 to 2012. Accumulation of metals and the level of pollution was measured by the geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and enrichment factor (EF). According to I_geo and EF, the lake showed a high concentration of Ag, Se, Na, Au, S, Ca, Mg, Ba, Sb, Bi, and Sr with 5 ≤ EF ≤ 45 and I_geo class = 2-6. The EF to Au = 45 and Ag = 40. In contrast, Fe, Al, As, Cr, Ga, La, Sc, and Th do not represent pollution (I_geo ≤ 0 and EF ≤ 1.6). A principal component analysis and Spearman correlation showed a first group composed of Ca, Mg, P, Ba, Sr, Na, K, Ag, Bi, Au, Mo, sand, silt, and total organic carbon with positive correlation ≥ 0.70 and > 0.95 to Sr, Ag, sand, and silt. These were negatively correlated ≥- 0.70 with Fe. The second group: Fe, La, Ga, Ti, V, Cr, As, Al, Th from lithogenic source. Prediction models for the concentration for Mg, Na, P, Sr, Fe, Ga, and total organic carbon to years 2020-2050 were obtained with R² > 0.65. In the anthropogenic source analyses, a watershed land use map indicates multiple uses of the land, with 53% urban area, 14.6% agriculture, and 14.5% forest.

Where has the pollution gone? A survey of organic contaminants in Ho Chi Minh city / Saigon River (Vietnam) bed sediments

A wide range of persistent organic chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some insecticides, as well as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and some perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were analyzed in 17 bed sediments collected along the Saigon River and at adjacent canal mouths from upstream to downstream in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). Concentrations were rather low for PAHs, as well as for legacy PCBs and dichloro-diphenyl-trichlorethane and metabolites (DDTs), or below detection limits for several PFASs and all PBDEs measured. Several insecticides (chlorpyrifos-ethyl, and the pyrethroids cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin) displayed rather high concentrations at a few sites within the city. There was no distinct upstream - downstream trend for PAHs, (DDTs) or PCBs. Although adjacent canal sediments tended to be more contaminated than Saigon River sediments, the differences were not significant. Emissions are almost certainly substantial for PAHs, and probably also for other contaminants such as PBDEs and some PFASs. During the dry season, contaminants are presumably stored in the city, either in canals or on urban surfaces. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period carries away contaminated particle flows into the canals and then the Saigon River. The strong tidal influence in the river channel hinders the accumulation of contaminated particles. Contaminated deposits should accordingly be investigated further downstream in depositional environments, such as the mangrove.

Effect of dissolved oxygen and nutrient levels on heavy metal contents and fractions in river surface sediments

In aquatic systems worldwide, heavy metal pollution has been increasing alongside rapidly growing anthropogenic activities, and most heavy metals are stored in sediments. Overlying water conditions may influence whether sediments act as heavy metal sinks or sources. In this study, we investigated the effects of the dissolved oxygen (DO) and nutrient levels of overlying water on the total contents and fractions of Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mo, and Fe in river surface sediments. Sediments and overlying water were collected from a tributary of the Hai River in Tianjin, China, and then incubated for 61 days under laboratory conditions. The chemical speciation of heavy metals was determined following the modified Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) three-step sequential extraction procedure. The results showed that Pb, Zn, and Fe were released from the sediments in an anoxic environment and adsorbed from the overlying water in an aerobic environment. High nutrient levels facilitated the adsorption of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe in the sediments, while the total content of Mo was higher under low nutrient level conditions. The DO and nutrient levels appeared to have no influence on the total content of Ni. According to the risk assessment code classification (RAC), anoxic conditions decrease the potential bioavailability risks of Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mo, and Fe. Anoxic conditions can also reduce the percentage of the potentially mobile fractions of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe. The low nutrient level contributed, to some extent, to reducing the potential bioavailability risk of Pb, but increasing the risk of Cu. The high nutrient level increased the potentially mobile fractions of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Fe. The information obtained in this study improves our scientific understanding of the effects of overlying water conditions on the total heavy metal contents and fractions.

Modelling environment contamination with heavy metals in flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus and upper sediments from north African coasts of the Mediterranean Sea

Heavy metals are a serious hazard for aquatic ecosystems and human health. They negatively affect aquatic life functioning through accumulation resulting physiological/growth disturbances in aquatic lifeforms. This survey focused on the assessment of heavy metal pollution in the Gulf of Annaba (northeastern Algeria), the largest and most diversified industrial hub in Africa, using a multi-compartment approach (water-sediment-biota). The study aims to characterize the spatiotemporal variation of trace metal (TM) contamination and its effects on the growth of the Flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus). It reviewed TM concentrations in upper sediments and organs of M. cephalus from various hydrosystems worldwide. Five sites distributed along the Gulf were sampled to determine water physicochemical parameters as well as the contamination of surficial sediments and muscles of M. cephalus by zinc, copper, lead, cadmium and mercury. The spatiotemporal variations of the measured parameters were tested and discussed following the synergetic effects of water, sediment and muscle variables on fish biometrics. The sediments at the Port, Joinoville and Sidi-Salem sites were classified as heavily polluted by lead, copper, zinc and cadmium, whereas only at the Port by mercury. Muscular lead concentrations exceeded international standard values in Joinoville and Port, and zinc in Port. The increase of water dissolved oxygen induced a significant decrease in sediment TM. The increase of sediment TM caused a significant increase in muscle TM levels. The S-shaped logistic models indicated that muscle contaminations reached a saturation plateaus following the current sediment pollution. TM concentrations in fish muscles negatively affected fish weight, but only copper and cadmium significantly influenced fish length. The consumption of fish from the Port, Joinoville and Sidi-Salem can be dangerous because concentrations of lead, zinc and cadmium exceeded the international standards. This study validates the effectiveness of biomonitoring using M. cephalus as bioindicator in polluted coasts.

Patterns of toxic metals bioaccumulation in a cross-border freshwater reservoir

In freshwater ecosystems toxic metals can follow different routes of bioaccumulation in the organisms' body mass, routes that are similar to electronic circuits, but far more complex due to their hierarchy levels. Reservoirs located on river courses have positive impacts on economic and social development because they concentrate large water volumes used for electrical energy production, water supply, irrigation, industry, aquaculture, providing ecosystems for migratory birds and aquatic species. The aim of the study was to assess the contamination with copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) of a cross-border reservoir located on River Prut (border between Romania and Republic of Moldova) in a temperate climate zone. Several aspects were considered: seasonal variation of water parameters and toxic metals, bioconcentration in eight fish species and transfer from prey to predator through the food chain, bioaccumulation by two freshwater molluscs separated in size groups and their role as bioindicators of toxic metals pollution. Metals concentrations were measured with an atomic absorption spectrometer (HR-CS GF-AAS). Cadmium, lead, nickel and chromium concentrations limits in water samples were below the detection limits (0.005 μg L^-1Cd, 0.013 μg L^-1Pb and 0.011 μg L^-1Cr) during the monitoring period, suggesting that anthropogenic contamination was insignificant in the studied ecosystem. Fish liver and kidney had specific selectivity for copper (0.9-55.56 μg g^-1) and cadmium (0.097-1.031 μg g^-1) in case of pike-perch and bighead carp. The separation of molluscs in size groups did not prove that toxic metals increase in concentration with the organism age.

Distribution and source analysis of heavy metal pollutants in sediments of a rapid developing urban river system

Heavy metal pollution of aquatic environments in rapidly developing industrial regions is of considerable global concern due to its potential to cause serious harm to aquatic ecosystems and human health. This study assessed heavy metal contamination of sediments in a highly industrialized urban watershed of eastern China containing several historically unregulated manufacturing enterprises. Total concentrations and solid-phase fractionation of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd were investigated for 39 river sediments using multivariate statistical analysis and geographically weighted regression (GWR) methods to quantitatively examine the relationship between land use and heavy metal pollution at the watershed scale. Results showed distinct spatial patterns of heavy metal contamination within the watershed, such as higher concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cd in the southwest and higher Cu concentration in the east, indicating links to specific pollution sources within the watershed. Correlation and PCA analyses revealed that Zn, Pb and Cd were dominantly contributed by anthropogenic activities; Cu originated from both industrial and agricultural sources; and Cr has been altered by recent pollution control strategies. The GWR model indicated that several heavy metal fractions were strongly correlated with industrial land proportion and this correlation varied with the level of industrialization as demonstrated by variations in local GWR R² values. This study provides important information for assessing heavy metal contaminated areas, identifying heavy metal pollutant sources, and developing regional-scale remediation strategies.

Water quality in the tropical Andes hotspot: The Yacuambi river (southeastern Ecuador)

Yacuambi river waters (southeast Ecuador, Amazonian region) were assessed to evaluate the potential risk to populations, who use it for drinking and irrigation, and ecosystems, which are part of Tropical Andes hotspot and considered some of the most biodiverse in the world. The water quality index was calculated and some quality parameters were checked to comply with Ecuadorian and North American standards for human consumption, preservation of aquatic life and irrigation. Four samplings were carried out in six stations covering the entire length of the Yacuambi river. Several parameters were analyzed: pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, color, phosphates, nitrite, nitrate, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total solids, turbidity, metals (Ba, Cd, Cr, Pb, As and Hg), pesticides and fecal coliforms. The water quality in the Yacuambi river was good and medium according to the classification of the Water Quality Index. However, it was unsuitable for human consumption, preservation of aquatic life and irrigation according to Ecuadorian and North American standards. Arsenic, color and fecal coliforms exceeded the limits for human consumption in all samples tested. Thresholds of preservation of aquatic life were exceeded in all samples in the case of Pb and in some samples for As, pH, nitrite and nitrate. Arsenic and fecal coliforms made Yacuambi river waters unsuitable for irrigation.

Level, source identification, and risk analysis of heavy metal in surface sediments from river-lake ecosystems in the Poyang Lake, China

The concentrations, sources, and risks of heavy metals (Fe, Al, Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, W, Pb, and Tl) in sediments in five river-lake ecosystems in the Poyang Lake region were studied. The concentrations of the heavy metals varied spatially, with most of the highest concentrations in the Raohe river-lake ecosystem (RH). All heavy metals except As, Cd, W, and Tl were enriched in sediments possessing high total organic carbon contents or in finer sediments. Based on enrichment factors and statistical methods, it was found that Cd in sediments in the Xiushui (XS), Ganjiang (GJ), Xinjiang (XJ) river-lake ecosystems, and RH; Mn in the XS, GJ, and RH; and W in the XS and GJ were greatly affected by anthropogenic inputs. Moreover, the origins of Cu, Zn, and As require more attention due to the high concentrations found. The high enrichment factor of Cd in the sediments indicated that this metal might cause significant pollution in the environment. The results of the modified potential ecological risk index revealed that the XS, GJ, RH, and XJ were at considerable ecological risk, while the sediments in the Fuhe river-lake ecosystem (FH) were at moderate ecological risk, with Cd contributing the highest proportion of risk. The hazard score fundamentally validated the modified potential ecological risk analysis and revealed a mean toxicity of 57.80% to the benthic organisms in the RH.

Accumulation of toxic metals and organic micro-pollutants in sediments from tropical urban rivers, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

The increasing contamination of fresh water resource by toxic metals and Persistence Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a major environmental concern globally. In the present investigation, surface sediments collected from three main rivers named, Makelele, Kalamu and Nsanga, draining through the city of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, were characterized for grain size, organic matter, toxic metals, POPs (including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Furthermore, enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) were performed to determine metal source and pollution status. The results highlighted high concentration of toxic metals in all sediment samples, reaching the values (mg kg^-1) of 325 (Cu), 549 (Zn), 165 (Pb) and 1.5 (Cd). High values of PCBs and OCPs were detected in sediment samples, e.g. in Makelele river, PCB values ranged from 0.9 to 10.9 with total PCBs (∑7 PCBs × 4.3): 169.3 μg kg^-1; OCPs from 21.6 to 146.8 with ∑OCPs: 270.6 μg kg^-1. The PBDEs concentrations were higher in investigated rivers comparatively with values detected in many rivers from Sub-Saharan Africa. The ΣPAHs value ranged from 22.6 to 1011.9 μg kg^-1. River contamination may be explained by local intense domestic activities, urban and agricultural runoff, industrial and hospital wastewaters discharge into the rivers without prior treatment. This research provides not only a first baseline information on the extent of contamination in this tropical ecosystem but also represents useful tools incorporated to evaluate sediment quality in the river receiving systems which can be applied to similar aquatic environments.

Spatial distribution and biological effects of trace metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd) and organic micropollutants (PCBs, PAHs) in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis along the Algerian west coast

Native mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis are used as bioindicator organisms to assess the concentration levels and toxic effects of persistent chemicals, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heavy metals using biomarker responses, such as catalase (CAT), glutathione s-transferase (GST), and condition indices, for the Algerian coast. The results show that mussels of Oran Harbour are extremely polluted by PCBs and PAHs, i.e., 97.6 and 2892.1μg/kg d.w., respectively. Other sites present low levels of pollution. Furthermore, high concentrations of zinc, lead and cadmium are found in mussels from fishing, agricultural and estuarine sites, respectively, while low concentrations of copper are found in all of the sites studied. CAT activity is negatively correlated with Cd and Cu, and Zn is positively correlated with GST and CAT. Site classification tools reveal the potential toxicity of coastal areas exposed to anthropogenic pressure and a gradient of toxicity along the Algerian west coast.

Current status and historical variations of DDT-related contaminants in the sediments of Lake Chaohu in China and their influencing factors

The temporal-spatial distributions of DDT-related contaminants (DDXs), including DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), DDE (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene) and DDD (dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane), in the sediments of Lake Chaohu and their influencing factors were studied. p,p-DDE and p,p-DDD were found to be the two dominant components of DDXs in both surface and core sediments. The parent DDT compounds were still detectable in sediment cores after the late 1930s. Historical usage of technical DDT was identified as the primary source of DDXs in sediments, as indicated by DDT/(DDD + DDE) ratios of less than one. The residual levels of DDXs were higher in the surface and core sediments in the western lake area than in other lake areas, which might be due to the combined inflow effects of municipal sewage, industrial wastewater and agricultural runoff. The DDX residues in the sediment cores reached peak values in the late 1970s or early 1980s. There were significant positive relationships between DDX residues in sediment cores with annual DDT production and with fine particulate sizes (<4.5 μm). The relationship between the DDXs and TOC in sediment was complex, as indicated by the significant differences among the surface and core sediments. The algae-derived organic matter significantly influenced the amount of residue, composition and distribution of DDXs in the sediments. The DDD/DDE ratios responded well to the anaerobic conditions in the sediments that were caused by algal blooms after the late 1970s in the western lake area. This suggests that the algae-derived organic matter was an important factor and served as a biomarker of eutrophication and also affected the DDX residues and lifecycle in the lake ecosystem.

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in Tiber River and Estuary: Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk

The polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) pollution in the Tiber River and its environmental impact on the Tyrrhenian Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea) were estimated. 32 PCBs and 17 OCPs (aldrin, α-BHC, β-BHC, δ-BHC, lindane, p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT, dieldrin, endosulfan I, endosulfan II, endosulfan sulfate, endrin, endrin aldehyde, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, methoxychlor) were determined in the water dissolved phase (DP), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment samples. Total concentrations of PCBs ranged from 0.54 to 74.75ngL(-1) in water (sum of DP and SPM) and from 3.73 to 79.30ngg(-1) dry weigh in sediment samples; while the concentrations of total OCPs collected in water (sum of DP and SPM) ranged from 0.07 to 7.04ngL(-1) and from 0.66 to 10.02ngg(-1) dry weigh in sediment samples. Contaminant discharges into the sea were calculated in about 227.08kgyear(-1) for PCBs and 24.91kgyear(-1) for OCPs, showing that this river should account as one of the main contribution sources of PCBs and OCPs to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The ∑TEQPCB from the sediment samples ranged from 0.0006 to 0.37ngg(-1) with an average level of 0.13ngg(-1). Based on Sediments Quality Guidelines, biological adverse effects on aquatic ecosystem were rare to occasional for PCB and OCP levels in Tiber water system.

Patterns of trace element bioaccumulation in jellyfish Rhizostoma pulmo (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon from SE Spain

The effects of an abandoned mining area, exploited for centuries in the mining district of Cartagena-La Union, result in a continuous supply of heavy metals into the Mar Menor coastal lagoon after rain episodes. As a consequence, concentration of trace elements in water column and sediments of this ecosystem is usually higher than in other areas. For monitoring ecosystem health, this study assessed the ability of Rhizostoma pulmo to bioaccumulate trace elements. A total of 57 individuals were sampled at eight different sampling stations during the summer of 2012. Although the concentrations of different analyzed elements (Al, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, and Pb) were moderate, bioconcentration levels in relation to seawater metal concentration were extremely high. In any case, the use or disposal of these organisms should consider their metal content, because of their potential environmental and health implications.

Leachates draining from controlled municipal solid waste landfill: Detailed geochemical characterization and toxicity tests

Management of municipal solid wastes in many countries consists of waste disposal into landfill without treatment or selective collection of solid waste fractions including plastics, paper, glass, metals, electronic waste, and organic fraction leading to the unsolved problem of contamination of numerous ecosystems such as air, soil, surface, and ground water. Knowledge of leachate composition is critical in risk assessment of long-term impact of landfills on human health and the environment as well as for prevention of negative outcomes. The research presented in this paper investigates the seasonal variation of draining leachate composition and resulting toxicity as well as the contamination status of soil/sediment from lagoon basins receiving leachates from landfill in Mpasa, a suburb of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Samples were collected during the dry and rainy seasons and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, soluble ions, toxic metals, and were then subjected to toxicity tests. Results highlight the significant seasonal difference in leachate physicochemical composition. Affected soil/sediment showed higher values for toxic metals than leachates, indicating the possibility of using lagoon system for the purification of landfill leachates, especially for organic matter and heavy metal sedimentation. However, the ecotoxicity tests demonstrated that leachates are still a significant source of toxicity for terrestrial and benthic organisms. Therefore, landfill leachates should not be discarded into the environment (soil or surface water) without prior treatment. Interest in the use of macrophytes in lagoon system is growing and toxic metal retention in lagoon basin receiving systems needs to be fully investigated in the future. This study presents useful tools for evaluating landfill leachate quality and risk in lagoon systems which can be applied to similar environmental compartments.

The sediment-contact test using the ostracod Heterocypris incongruens: Effect of fine sediments and determination of toxicity thresholds

The toxicity test using freshwater ostracods of the species Heterocypris incongruens is a sub-chronic static test that exposes individuals to whole sediments over a period of 6 d, the endpoints being mortality and growth. We tested the hypothesis that endpoints of the sediment bioassay using Heterocypris incongruens are affected by the presence of fine sediment particles by testing control sediment supplied with the commercial test kit with increasing proportions of kaolin clay as a proxy for fines. While mortality was not affected, the results showed that increasing the presence of clay reduced ostracod growth. Based on the variability in growth, a sublethal toxicity threshold of 35% is proposed to distinguish effects due to sediment properties from those due to toxicity. The relevance of this threshold was verified using data from toxicity tests of ambient sediment samples with low levels of contamination.

Assessment of trace metal contamination level and toxicity in sediments from coastal regions of West Bengal, eastern part of India

The work investigated concentration of trace metals in surface sediments (0-10 cm; < 63 μm grain size) from 15 sampling sites of diverse environmental stresses covering Hugli River Estuary (HRE) and Sundarban Mangrove Wetland (SMW), eastern coastal part of India. The trace metal concentrations in sediments exhibited an overall decreasing trend as follows: Cr (21.2-60.9)>Cu (11.60-102.47)>Ni (19.10-52.60)>Pb (7.09-183.88)>As (4.41-11.46)>Cd (0.02-4.4)>Ag (0.02-0.87). Both the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and contamination factor (CF) values revealed significant pollution by Ag, Cd and Pb at Nurpur of HRE. Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI) (61.21 ± 112.40) showed wide range of variations from low (19.76) to serious (463.20) ecological risk. A positive significant correlation was found between metals and organic carbon in sediments. The ecological risk associated with the trace metals in sediment was considered on the consensus based Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs). The work suggests that the trace metals present in sediments posed adverse effects on the sediment-dwelling organisms.

Metal bioaccumulation pattern by Cotylorhiza tuberculata (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa) in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon (SE Spain)

Coastal lagoons are ecosystems highly vulnerable to human impacts because of their situation between terrestrial and marine environment. Mar Menor coastal lagoon is one of the largest lagoons of the Mediterranean Sea, placed in SE Spain and subjected to major human impacts, in particular the mining of metal sulphides. As a consequence, metal concentration in water column and sediments of this ecosystem is usually higher than in other areas. For monitoring ecosystem health, the present study has assessed the ability of Cotylorhiza tuberculata for bioaccumulating metals from sea water. Up to 65 individuals were sampled at 8 different sampling stations during the summer of 2012. Although the concentration values for different elements considered were moderate (Pb: 0.04-29.50 ppm, Zn: 2.27-93.44 ppm, Cd: 0-0.67 ppm, As: 0.56-130.31 ppm) by dry weight of the jellyfish tissues (bell and oral arms combined), bioconcentration levels in relation to seawater metal concentration were extremely high. In any case, the use or disposal of these organisms should consider their metal content because of their potential environmental and health implications.

Copper acutely impairs behavioral function and muscle acetylcholinesterase activity in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Copper is a heavy metal found at relatively high concentrations in surface waters around the world. Copper is a micronutrient at low concentrations and is essential to several organisms. At higher concentrations copper can become toxic, which reveal the importance of studying the toxic effects of this metal on the aquatic life. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the toxic effects of copper on the behavior and biochemical parameters of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Zebrafish were exposed for 24h at a concentration of 0.006 mg/L Cu. After the exposure period, behavioral profile of animals was recorded through 6 min using two different apparatuses tests: the Novel Tank and the Light-Dark test. After behavioral testing, animals were euthanized with a solution of 250 mg/L of tricaine (MS-222). Brain, muscle, liver and gills were extracted for analysis of parameters related to oxidative stress and accumulation of copper in these tissues. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was determined in brain and muscle. Results showed acute exposure to copper induces significant changes in behavioral profile of zebrafish by changing locomotion and natural tendency to avoid brightly lit area. On the other hand, there were no significant effects on parameters related to oxidative stress. AChE activity decreased significantly in zebrafish muscle, but there were no significant changes in cerebral AChE activity. Copper levels in tissues did not increase significantly compared to the controls. Taken together, these results indicate that a low concentration of copper can acutely affect behavioral profile of adult zebrafish which could be partially related to an inhibition on muscle AChE activity. These results reinforce the need of additional tests to establishment of safe copper concentrations to aquatic organisms and the importance of behavioral parameters in ecotoxicological studies.

Distribution and ecotoxicology of bioavailable metals and As in surface sediments of Paraguaçu estuary, Todos os Santos Bay, Brazil

Surface sediments collected in the intertidal zone of Paraguaçu estuary in July, 2013, were analyzed for organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, grain size fractions and partial concentrations of 16 metals. The USEPA 3051A method and ICP-OES and CV-AAS techniques were chosen to metal analysis. Pollution indices (EF, Igeo and PIN) and a comparison with sediment quality guidelines (UET, ERL, ERM, TEL and PEL of NOAA) were conducted in order to evaluate the potential metal impacts over the area. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation results showed the importance of organic matter content and the fine-grained fraction of sediments on the control of the bioavailable metals distribution. The Paraguaçu estuary already has anthropogenic enrichment relative to the background level, especially for Mn, whose values exceeded almost 30 times the background at one site (Mn: 1197.30 mg kg(-1)). However, metal levels are still below the reference values with the exception of Hg at one site (Hg: 0.25 mg kg(-1), exceeded TEL and ERL).

Spatial distribution and toxicity assessment of heavy metals in sediments of Liaohe River, northeast China

Twenty-four surface sediment samples were collected from Liaohe River in June 2014 for the analysis of total concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Fe, and Mn. The spatial distribution of heavy metals in Liaohe River was site specific, with Hun River as the most polluted river mainly affected by industrial and human activities. The contents of acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and simultaneously extracted metals (SEMs) in Liaohe River varied significantly, ranging from 0.03 to 19.4 μmol/g and 0.14 to 10.8 μmol/g, respectively. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) community size, organic matter and sulfate availability, and sediment redox status may be the main factors affecting the AVS distribution. Among all the acid-extracted metals, Zn was dominant in all samples, whereas much more toxic Cd contributed less than 1.0 % to the total SEMs. Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and AVS-SEM models were used to predict the sediment toxicity. Results revealed that only a small portion of sites exhibited potential metal toxicity to aquatic biota, while adverse effects should rarely occur in majority of sites. Comparison of the two assessment methods showed inconsistent results, indicating that each method had its own limitations. The combination of different methods will be more convincing as to the sediment quality assessment.
