Multi-catalysis induced by pulsed discharge plasma coupled with graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites for efficient removal of ofloxacin in water: Mechanism, degradation pathway and potential toxicity

The Degradation of Aqueous Oxytetracycline by an O3/CaO2 System in the Presence of HCO3-: Performance, Mechanism, Degradation Pathways, and Toxicity Evaluation

This research constructed a novel O3/CaO2/HCO3- system to degrade antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) in water. The results indicated that CaO2 and HCO3- addition could promote OTC degradation in an O3 system. There is an optimal dosage of CaO2 (0.05 g/L) and HCO3- (2.25 mmol/L) that promotes OTC degradation. After 30 min of treatment, approximately 91.5% of the OTC molecules were eliminated in the O3/CaO2/HCO3- system. A higher O3 concentration, alkaline condition, and lower OTC concentration were conducive to OTC decomposition. Active substances including ·OH, 1O2, ·O2-, and ·HCO3- play certain roles in OTC degradation. The production of ·OH followed the order: O3/CaO2/HCO3- > O3/CaO2 > O3. Compared to the sole O3 system, TOC and COD were easier to remove in the O3/CaO2/HCO3- system. Based on DFT and LC-MS, active species dominant in the degradation pathways of OTC were proposed. Then, an evaluation of the toxic changes in intermediates during OTC degradation was carried out. The feasibility of O3/CaO2/HCO3- for the treatment of other substances, such as bisphenol A, tetracycline, and actual wastewater, was investigated. Finally, the energy efficiency of the O3/CaO2/HCO3- system was calculated and compared with other mainstream processes of OTC degradation. The O3/CaO2/HCO3- system may be considered as an efficient and economical approach for antibiotic destruction.

Underwater bubbling plasma assisted with persulfate activation for the synergistic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

The performance and mechanism of persulfate consisting of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation by underwater bubbling plasma (UBP) for the synergistic removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) were comparatively investigated. Both PMS and PDS addition significantly promoted the removal of TCH in UBP system, indicating persulfate exhibited highly synergistic effect with UBP. Furthermore, enhancing the persulfate dosage, peak voltage and pulse frequency, as well as reducing initial TCH concentration were favorable for the elimination of TCH. Compared with neutral condition, acidic and alkaline condition were advantageous to TCH removal. The presence of coexisting substances including Cl-, SO42- and humic acid (HA) had an adverse effect on TCH degradation, while Fe2+ could improve the removal of TCH. The degradation of ciprofloxacin and metronidazole proved the applicability for other antibiotics degradation of the reaction system. SO4-·, ·OH, ·O2-, hydrated electrons, O3 and H2O2 were the active substances responsible for TCH removal. The reduction of aqueous O3 concentration and enhancement of H2O2 concentration were observed after persulfate addition. UV-vis spectra and TOC analysis illustrated the addition of PMS or PDS facilitated the degradation and mineralization of TCH. 3D-EEMF spectra visually displayed the degradation process of TCH. Plausible degradation routes were deduced based on LC-MS and the toxicities of TCH and its intermediates were evaluated by Toxicity Estimation Software Tool.

A comprehensive insight on plasma-catalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water: Comparison between ZnO and TiO2

A novel system combining underwater plasma bubbles and high voltage nanopulses was combined for the first time with ZnO and TiO2 for the degradation of organic pollutants in water. The effect of catalyst loading, discharge power and plasma gas on pollutant degradation was investigated whereas the plasma-catalytic mechanism was explored through the quantification of plasma species, COD/TOC measurements and scavenging experiments in the presence and absence of catalysts. The increased efficiency in the presence of either ZnO or TiO2, especially under plasma gases (air and oxygen) able to produce UV radiation in the range of wavelengths absorbed by both catalysts, lies on the increased concentration of the critical reactive species (e.g. ·O2-, ·ΟΗ, H2O2). Compared to plasma alone process, H2O2 was significantly enhanced in the presence of TiO2 and decreased in the presence of ZnO, whereas ·OH concentration was higher in the plasma-ZnO but lower in the plasma-TiO2 system which supports the overall superior performance of ZnO compared to TiO2. The synergy of plasma-ZnO process compared to that of plasma-TiO2 was ∼2.4 and ∼1.5 times higher for Orange II (OII) and Methylene Blue (MB), respectively, exhibiting a very low electrical energy per order (1.4 kWh m-3 for OII and 0.31 kWh m-3 or MB). The present effort contributes on providing fundamental insights and further expand of plasma-catalysis for water treatment.

Recent Progress in Multifunctional Graphene-Based Nanocomposites for Photocatalysis and Electrocatalysis Application

The global energy shortage and environmental degradation are two major issues of concern in today's society. The production of renewable energy and the treatment of pollutants are currently the mainstream research directions in the field of photocatalysis. In addition, over the last decade or so, graphene (GR) has been widely used in photocatalysis due to its unique physical and chemical properties, such as its large light-absorption range, high adsorption capacity, large specific surface area, and excellent electronic conductivity. Here, we first introduce the unique properties of graphene, such as its high specific surface area, chemical stability, etc. Then, the basic principles of photocatalytic hydrolysis, pollutant degradation, and the photocatalytic reduction of CO₂ are summarized. We then give an overview of the optimization strategies for graphene-based photocatalysis and the latest advances in its application. Finally, we present challenges and perspectives for graphene-based applications in this field in light of recent developments.

Recyclable magnetic Fe3O4@C for methylene blue removal under microwave-induced reaction system

The reclamation and removal of organic pollutants are difficult issues of world concern. In this study, a microwave-induced reaction system (MIRS) is applied to synthesize the multifunctional composite of Fe₃O₄@C, which is employed to adsorb, separate and catalytic oxide the typical organic dye of methylene blue (MB). SEM, TEM, VSM, XPS, pHpzc, and N₂ adsorption performances are carried out to characterize the Fe₃O₄@C. Results show that the Fe₃O₄@C mainly consists of activated Fe-O-C microspheres, which possess plentiful mesopore and macropore structures on surfaces. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out by varying key reaction conditions to optimize these. The maximum adsorption capacity of MB onto the Fe₃O₄@C was 305.0 mg g^-1 in 120 min, at pH 10, and at a temperature of 323 K. MIRS was also assisted to regenerate the spent Fe₃O₄@C which presented good regeneration efficiency by sustaining 16 regeneration cycles without any oxidizing agent. SEM images and FTIR spectrum verified that MB would translate into greater or smaller-sized carbon microspheres. What's more, the adsorption of MB onto both initial and the 16th regenerated Fe₃O₄@C obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model and followed the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics, indicating the adsorptive stability after regeneration. In this study, the Fe₃O₄@C combined with MIRS may be one innovative strategy for organic pollutants' complete removal in the future.

Multi-catalysis of glow discharge plasma coupled with FeS2 for synergistic removal of antibiotic

Fe-based composites improved the energy utilization efficiency of plasma for removing contaminants through multi-catalysis have received much attention. However, the energy efficiency and catalytic activity are compromised by the slow transformation from Fe (Ⅲ) to Fe (Ⅱ). Here, given the electron-donating ability of reducing sulfur species, as well as the acidic environment generated by FeS₂, single FeS₂ was introduced into the glow discharge plasma (GDP) reactor for the removal of tylosin (TYL). The results showed that a significant synergistic effect between FeS₂ and GDP improved the energy efficiency of plasma and the removal efficiency of TYL (99.7%). FeS₂ boosted the generation of radicals (·OH, ·O₂^-) and nonradicals (h⁺, e^-) rather than H₂O₂ and O₃, which played an important role in TYL abatement. Moreover, the electrons donating sulfur and iron species from FeS₂ can accelerate the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II), which was conducive to the generation of radicals. Besides, acid solution self-adjustment resulted from the oxidation of FeS₂ improved heterogeneous Fenton reaction, the oxidation potential of ·OH and adsorption of positive charged TYL. The plausible degradation pathways of TYL were proposed in GDP/FeS₂ system. In summary, enhanced removal of TYL was mainly attributed to the catalytic pathway altered by FeS₂ through high-energy electrons, photocatalysis, heterogeneous Fenton and O₃ catalysis in the GDP system simultaneously. The strategy of integrating GDP with FeS₂ proposed in this work is expected to offer a feasible and potential technique for organic wastewater treatment.

Removal of ofloxacin from wastewater by chloride electrolyte electro-oxidation: Analysis of the role of active chlorine and operating costs

Electro-oxidation (EO) has received increasing attention as an efficient and green method for removing pollutants from wastewater. Chloride anions (Cl^-), which commonly exist in wastewater, can act as an electrolyte for the EO process. However, the role of reactive chlorine species (RCS) generated near electrodes is often underestimated. In this study, we generated hydroxyl radicals (OH) and RCS in a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode system and investigated its degradation mechanism for ofloxacin (OFX) removal. The findings suggested that OFX degradation was dominated by OH existing near the anode in solution, with RCS playing a supporting role. Based on the produced intermediates, we proposed an OFX decomposition pathway. The biological toxicities of the intermediates were evaluated through the ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. procedure. Nearly half of the intermediates are less toxic than the parent compound. After optimizing the operating parameters by the response surface methodology, 20 mg/L OFX was almost completely degraded after 10 min of reaction in 1.45 g/L NaCl with a current density (j) of 18 mA/cm², and the total organic carbon was decreased by 30.55 %. The energy consumption and current efficiency were 0.648 kW·h/g_TOC and 8.65 %, respectively. Comparing the operating costs of the proposed and other EO methods, our method emerged as a viable new treatment scheme for similar polluted wastewaters. This study aims to comprehensively understand the potential application value of BDD electrodes in the treatment of Cl^- containing organic wastewater.

A review on recent advances in the applications of composite Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles in the food industry

Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their superparamagnetic properties, large specific surface area, high biocompatibility, non-toxicity, large-scale production, and recyclability. More importantly, numerous hydroxyl groups (-OH) on the surface of Fe3O4 MNPs can provide coupling sites for various modifiers, forming versatile nanocomposites for applications in the energy, biomedicine, and environmental fields. With the development of science and technology, the potential of nanotechnology in the food industry has also gradually become prominent. However, the application of composite Fe3O4 MNPs in the food industry has not been systematically summarized. Herein, this article reviews composite Fe3O4 MNPs, including their properties, modifications, and physical functions, as well as their applications in the entire food industry from production to processing, storage, and detection. This review lays a solid foundation for promoting food innovation and improving food quality and safety.

Efficient removal of antibiotics from water resources is a public health priority: a critical assessment of the efficacy of some remediation strategies for antibiotics in water

This review discusses the fundamental principles and mechanism of antibiotic removal from water of some commonly applied treatment techniques including chlorination, ozonation, UV-irradiation, Fenton processes, photocatalysis, electrochemical-oxidation, plasma, biochar, anaerobicdigestion, activated carbon and nanomaterials. Some experimental shortfalls identified by researchers such as certain characteristics of degradation agent applied and the strategies explored to override the identified limitations are briefly discussed. Depending on interactions of a range of factors including the type of antibiotic compound, operational parameters applied such as pH, temperature and treatment time, among other factors, all reviewed techniques can eliminate or reduce the levels of antibiotic compounds in water to varying extents. Some of the reviewed techniques such as anaerobic digestion generally require longer treatment times (up to 360, 193 and 170 days, according to some studies), while others such as photocatalysis achieved degradation within short contact time (within a minimum of 30, but up to 60, 240, 300 and 1880 minutes, in some cases). For some treatment techniques such as ozonation and Fenton, it is apparent that subjecting compounds to longer treatment times may improve elimination efficiency, whereas for some other techniques such as nanotechnology, application of longer treatment time generally meant comparatively minimal elimination efficiency. Based on the findings of experimental studies summarized, it is apparent that operational parameters such as pH and treatment time, while critical, do not exert sole or primary influence on the elimination percentage(s) achieved. Elimination efficiency achieved rather seems to be due more to the force of a combination of several factors.

Efficient ofloxacin degradation via photo-Fenton process over eco-friendly MIL-88A(Fe): Performance, degradation pathways, intermediate library establishment and toxicity evaluation

The high-throughput production of the eco-friendly MIL-88A(Fe) was achieved under mild reaction conditions with normal pressure and temperature. The as-prepared MIL-88A(Fe) exhibited efficient photo-Fenton catalytic ofloxacin (OFL) degradation upon visible light irradiation with good stability and reusability. The OFL (20.0 mg/L) was completely degraded within 50 min under visible light with the aid of MIL-88A(Fe) (0.25 g/L) and H₂O₂ (1.0 mL/L) in aqueous solution (pH = 7.0). The hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are the main active species during the photo-Fenton oxidation process. Meanwhile, the degradation intermediates and the corresponding degradation pathways were identified and proposed with the aid of both ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, the degradation product library was firstly established to identify intermediate transformation products (TPs) with their variation of concentration, and their corresponding toxicologic activities were assessed via Toxtree and T.E.S.T software as well. Finally, the MIL-88A is efficient and stable with four cycles' catalysis operations, demonstrating good potential for water treatment.

SDS coated Fe3O4@MoS2 with NIR-enhanced photothermal-photodynamic therapy and antibiotic resistance gene dissemination inhibition functions

Infection caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria is serious threat for public health, and calls for novel antibacterial agents with versatile functions. In particular, nanomaterial is one of promising candidates to fight the increasing antibiotic resistance crisis. Here, we synthesized distinct Fe₃O₄@MoS₂@SDS nanocomposites by ultrasonication assisted SDS coating on the Fe₃O₄@MoS₂. Photothermal investigation indicated that the Fe₃O₄@MoS₂@SDS showed excellent and stable photothermal performance and could be a NIR-induced photothermal reagent. It also displayed superior disinfection ability of Escherichia coli (E. coli), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and in vivo wound healing ability with the help of NIR irradiation. According to the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical capture tests, plenty of superoxide, hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen and living cell reactive oxygen species can be observed under NIR irradiation. Besides, the synergistic effect Fe₃O₄@MoS₂@SDS and NIR irradiation eradicated almost all the biofilms of MRSA, so this kind of function enhanced the disinfection ability of Fe₃O₄@MoS₂@SDS under NIR irradiation. Furthermore, its inhibition effect on antibiotic resistance gene dissemination was also investigated. As expected, the Fe₃O₄@MoS₂@SDS could efficiently and broadly block the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes which mediated by conjugative plasmids, and its blocking effect was better than that we have reported Fe₃O₄@MoS₂. Overall, our findings revealed that the Fe₃O₄@MoS₂@SDS could be a potential candidate for photothermal-photodynamic therapy and antibiotic resistance gene dissemination inhibition.

Activation and characterization of environmental catalysts in plasma-catalysis: Status and challenges

Plasma-catalysis has attracted great attentions in environmental/energy-related fields, but the synergetic mechanism still suffers intractable defects. Key issues are that what kind of catalysts are applicable for plasma system, how are they activated in plasma, and how to characterize them in plasma. This review systematically gives a comprehensive summarization of the selection of catalysts and its activation mechanism in plasma, based on the character of plasma, including physical effects containing the enhancement of discharge intensity and adsorption of reactants, and the utilization of plasma-generated active species such as·O, heat, O₃, ultraviolet light and e* . Focus is given to the illumination of the activation mechanisms of catalysts when placed in plasma zone. Subsequently, the novel characterization techniques for catalysts, which may associate properties to performance, are critically overviewed. The challenges and opportunities for the activation and characterizations of catalysts are proposed, and future perspectives are suggested about where the efforts should be made. It is expected that a bridge between catalysts design and character of plasma can be built to shed light on the synergetic mechanism for plasma-catalysis and design of new plasma-catalysis systems.

Insights into amoxicillin degradation in water by non-thermal plasmas

Antibiotics have been extensively used as pharmaceuticals for diverse applications. However, their overuse and indiscriminate discharge to water systems have led to increased antibiotic levels in our aquatic environments, which poses risks to human and livestock health. Non-thermal plasma water. However, the issues of process scalability and the mechanisms towards understanding the plasma-induced degradation remain. This study addresses these issues by coupling a non-thermal plasma jet with a continuous flow reactor to reveal the effective mechanisms of amoxicillin degradation. Four industry-relevant feeding gases (nitrogen, air, argon, and oxygen), discharge voltages, and frequencies were assessed. Amoxicillin degradation efficiencies achieved using nitrogen and air were much higher compared to argon and oxygen and further improved by increasing the applied voltage and frequency. The efficiency of plasma-induced degradation depended on the interplay of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and nitrite (NO₂^-), validated by mimicked chemical solutions tests. Insights into prevailing degradation pathways were elucidated through the detection of intermediate products by advanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Fabrication of novel three-dimensional Fe3O4-based particles electrodes with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for Berberine removal

Reasonable design of three-dimensional (3D) catalytic particle electrodes (CPEs) is crucial for achieving efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants. Herein, the novel Fe₃O₄/SnO₂/GO (FO/SO/GO) particle electrode has been developed and serviced to the 3D electrocatalytic berberine hydrochloride oxidation system with DSA (RuO₂-IrO₂-SnO₂/Ti) electrode as anode and GDE (gas diffusion electrode) electrode as the cathode. Compared with 2D systems and other CPEs, FO/SO/GO electrode shows excellent electrocatalytic activity and remarkable stability for BH removal, that is, the removal rate of BH is 94.8% within 90 min, and the rate constant is 0.03095 min^-1. More importantly, after five cycles, the ternary composite still maintains a strong ability to oxidize pollutants. The structural characterization and electrochemical measurement further uncover that the electron transfer ability and electrocatalytic oxidation efficiency are highly dependent on the surface structure regulation of CPEs. Furthermore, the quenching experiments show that hydroxyl radicals are the main active species in the 3D electro-Fenton (EF) system, which can oxidize BH molecules adsorbed on the surface of GO to CO₂, H₂O, or other products. The results could potentially provide new insights for designing and fabricating more stable and efficient 3D CPEs electrocatalytic removal of organic pollutants in the future.

Efficient degradation of organic dyes using peroxymonosulfate activated by magnetic graphene oxide

Magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) was prepared and used as a catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degradation of Coomassie brilliant blue G250 (CBB). The effects of operation conditions including MGO dosage, PMS dosage and initial concentration of CBB were studied. CBB removal could reach 99.5% under optimum conditions, and high removals of 98.4–99.9% were also achieved for other organic dyes with varied structures, verifying the high efficiency and wide applicability of the MGO/PMS catalytic system. The effects of environmental factors including solution pH, inorganic ions and water matrices were also investigated. Reusability test showed that CBB removals maintained above 90% in five consecutive runs, indicating the acceptable recyclability of MGO. Based on quenching experiments, solvent exchange (H₂O to D₂O) and in situ open circuit potential (OCP) test, it was found that ˙OH, SO₄˙⁻ and high-valent iron species were responsible for the efficient degradation of CBB in the MGO/PMS system, while the contributions of O₂˙⁻, ¹O₂ and the non-radical electron-transfer pathway were limited. Furthermore, the plausible degradation pathway of CBB was proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) results, and toxicity variation in the degradation process was evaluated by computerized structure–activity relationships (SARs) using green algae, daphnia, and fish as indicator species.

Efficient degradation of organic dyes with PMS and magnetic graphene oxide.

Recent Progress and Prospects in Catalytic Water Treatment

Presently, conventional technologies in water treatment are not efficient enough to completely mineralize refractory water contaminants. In this context, the implementation of catalytic processes could be an alternative. Despite the advantages provided in terms of kinetics of transformation, selectivity, and energy saving, numerous attempts have not yet led to implementation at an industrial scale. This review examines investigations at different scales for which controversies and limitations must be solved to bridge the gap between fundamentals and practical developments. Particular attention has been paid to the development of solar-driven catalytic technologies and some other emerging processes, such as microwave assisted catalysis, plasma-catalytic processes, or biocatalytic remediation, taking into account their specific advantages and the drawbacks. Challenges for which a better understanding related to the complexity of the systems and the coexistence of various solid-liquid-gas interfaces have been identified.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles three-dimensional electro-peroxydisulfate for improving tetracycline degradation

In this work, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticle employed as the three-dimensional electrode, were introduced into the electro-oxidation system with peroxydisulfate to improve the tetracycline (TC) degradation. The coprecipitation method prepared Fe₃O₄ was proved to be the irregular sphere-like form through the characterizations of XRD, SEM, N₂ adsorption isotherms, and XPS. By the contrast experiments, the EO-Fe₃O₄-PDS exhibited the outstanding TC degradation capability, which achieved 86.53% after 60 min treatment with current intensity of 20 mA cm^-2, Fe₃O₄ dose of 0.2 g L^-1, PDS amount of 2 mmol L^-1, initial pH 4.5, and TC concentration of 25 mg L^-1. Besides, the influence of current intensity, Fe₃O₄ dosage, PDS concentration, and beginning pH on the TC degradation was investigated systemically. The consecutive five recycles of Fe₃O₄ demonstrated that a favorable stability for the coupling process. The EO-Fe₃O₄-PDS could improve the PDS decomposition and H₂O₂ production. The sulfate and hydroxyl radicals both took charge of the antibiotic degradation as certified by scavenger test. The TC degradation evolution was presented based on the HPLC-MS analyses of degradation byproducts.

The Potential of Chaetoceros muelleri in Bioremediation of Antibiotics: Performance and Optimization

Antibiotics are frequently applied to treat bacterial infections in humans and animals. However, most consumed antibiotics are excreted into wastewater as metabolites or in their original form. Therefore, removal of antibiotics from aquatic environments is of high research interest. In this study, we investigated the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ofloxacin (OFX) with Chaetoceros muelleri, a marine diatom. The optimization process was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM) with two independent parameters, i.e., the initial concentration of antibiotics and contact time. The optimum removal of SMX and OFX were 39.8% (0.19 mg L⁻¹) and 42.5% (0.21 mg L⁻¹) at the initial concentration (0.5 mg L⁻¹) and contact time (6.3 days). Apart from that, the toxicity effect of antibiotics on the diatom was monitored in different SMX and OFX concentrations (0 to 50 mg L⁻¹). The protein (mg L⁻¹) and carotenoid (μg L⁻¹) content increased when the antibiotic concentration increased up to 20 mg L⁻¹, while cell viability was not significantly affected up to 20 mg L⁻¹ of antibiotic concentration. Protein content, carotenoid, and cell viability decreased during high antibiotic concentrations (more than 20 to 30 mg L⁻¹). This study revealed that the use of Chaetoceros muelleri is an appealing solution to remove certain antibiotics from wastewater.

Construction of S-doped MgO coupled with g-C3N4 nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation

In the present work, a series of photocatalysts in which S-MgO (SM) was coupled with g-C3N4 (CN) were synthesized and characterized in detail using various characterization techniques.
