Abstract
Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are important for maintaining gut homeostasis. Upon stimulation, ILC3s can rapidly produce cytokines to protect against infections and colitis. However, the regulation of ILC3 quick response is still unclear. Here, we find that eIF6 aggregates with Nsun2 and cytokine mRNA in ILC3s at steady state, which inhibits the methyltransferase activity of Nsun2 and the nuclear export of cytokine mRNA, resulting in the nuclear reservation of cytokine mRNA. Upon stimulation, phosphorylated p38α phosphorylates eIF6, which in turn releases Nsun2 activity, and promotes the nuclear export of cytokine mRNA and rapid cytokine production. Genetic disruption of p38α, Nsun2, or eIF6 in ILC3s influences the mRNA nuclear export and protein expression of the protective cytokines, thus leading to increased susceptibility to colitis. Together, our data identify a crucial role of the p38α-eIF6-Nsun2 axis in regulating rapid ILC3 immune response at the posttranscriptional level, which is critical for gut homeostasis maintenance and protection against gut inflammation.

Abstract
The triad of vascular impairment, muscle atrophy, and cognitive decline represents critical age-related conditions that significantly impact health. Vascular impairment disrupts blood flow, precipitating the muscle mass reduction seen in sarcopenia and the decline in neuronal function characteristic of neurodegeneration. Our limited understanding of the intricate relationships within this triad hinders accurate diagnosis and effective treatment strategies. This review analyzes the interrelated mechanisms that contribute to these conditions, with a specific focus on oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and impaired nutrient delivery. The aim is to understand the common pathways involved and to suggest comprehensive therapeutic approaches. Vascular dysfunctions hinder the circulation of blood and the transportation of nutrients, resulting in sarcopenia characterized by muscle atrophy and weakness. Vascular dysfunction and sarcopenia have a negative impact on physical function and quality of life. Neurodegenerative diseases exhibit comparable pathophysiological mechanisms that affect cognitive and motor functions. Preventive and therapeutic approaches encompass lifestyle adjustments, addressing oxidative stress, inflammation, and integrated therapies that focus on improving vascular and muscular well-being. Better understanding of these links can refine therapeutic strategies and yield better patient outcomes. This study emphasizes the complex interplay between vascular dysfunction, muscle degeneration, and cognitive decline, highlighting the necessity for multidisciplinary treatment approaches. Advances in this domain promise improved diagnostic accuracy, more effective therapeutic options, and enhanced preventive measures, all contributing to a higher quality of life for the elderly population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic inflammation is a common hallmark of many chronic diseases. Although exercise holds paramount importance in preventing and managing chronic diseases, adherence to exercise programs can be challenging for some patients. Consequently, there is a pressing need to explore alternative strategies to emulate the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise for chronic diseases. AIM OF REVIEW This review explores the emerging role of green tea bioactive components as potential mitigators of chronic inflammation, offering insights into their capacity to mimic the beneficial effects of exercise. We propose that bioactive components in green tea are promising agents for suppressing chronic inflammation, suggesting their unique capability to replicate the health benefits of exercise. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW This review focuses on several key concepts, including chronic inflammation and its role in chronic diseases, the anti-inflammatory effects of regular exercise, and bioactive components in green tea responsible for its health benefits. It elaborates on scientific evidence supporting the anti-inflammatory properties of green tea bioactive components, such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and theorizes how these bioactive components might replicate the effects of exercise at a molecular level. Through a comprehensive analysis of current research, this review proposes a novel perspective on the application of green tea as a potential intervention strategy to suppress chronic inflammation, thereby extending the benefits akin to those achieved through exercise.

Abstract
Herbal medicines are used by patients with IBD despite limited evidence. We present a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating treatment with herbal medicines in active ulcerative colitis (UC). A search query designed by a library informationist was used to identify potential articles for inclusion. Articles were screened and data were extracted by at least two investigators. Outcomes of interest included clinical response, clinical remission, endoscopic response, endoscopic remission, and safety. We identified 28 RCTs for 18 herbs. In pooled analyses, when compared with placebo, clinical response rates were significantly higher for Indigo naturalis (IN) (RR 3.70, 95% CI 1.97-6.95), but not for Curcuma longa (CL) (RR 1.60, 95% CI 0.99-2.58) or Andrographis paniculata (AP) (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.71-1.26). There was a significantly higher rate of clinical remission for CL (RR 2.58, 95% CI 1.18-5.63), but not for AP (RR 1.31, 95% CI 0.86-2.01). Higher rates of endoscopic response (RR 1.56, 95% CI 1.08-2.26) and remission (RR 19.37, 95% CI 2.71-138.42) were significant for CL. CL has evidence supporting its use as an adjuvant therapy in active UC. Research with larger scale and well-designed RCTs, manufacturing regulations, and education are needed.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Diseases caused by Enterobacteriaceae multidrug-resistant strains have become increasingly difficult to manage. It is necessary to verify the new antibacterial drug MccY effect on non-typhoid Salmonella infection in mice since it is regarded as a promising microcin. The results demonstrated that MccY has a potential therapeutic application value in the protection against Salmonella-induced intestinal damage and alleviating related intestinal dysbiosis and metabolic disorders. MccY could be a promising candidate as an antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory agent for treating infectious diseases.

Abstract
As the dominant herbal drink consumed worldwide, black tea exhibits various health promoting benefits including amelioration of inflammatory bowel diseases. Despite extensive studies on the tea's components, little is known about the bioactivities of nanoparticles (NPs) which were incidentally assembled in the tea infusion and represent the major components. This study investigated the alleviative effects of black tea infusion, the isolated black tea NPs, and a mixture of caffeine, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, gallic acid and epicatechin gallate on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis. The results showed that both the black tea infusion and the NPs significantly alleviated colitis, suppressed the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, and suppressed the DSS-induced loss of cell-cell junction proteins (e.g., E-cadherin, ZO-1, and claudin-1) and increase of p-STAT3. The mixture of four tea components, which is the analogue of bioactive payloads carried by the NPs, was much less effective than the tea infusion and NPs. It shows that the NPs elevate the efficiency of polyphenols and caffeine in black tea in restoring the intercellular connection in the intestine, inhibiting mucosal inflammation, and alleviating ulcerative colitis. This work may inspire the development of tea-based therapeutics for treating inflammatory bowel diseases and have wide influences on value-added processing, quality evaluation, functionalization, and innovation of tea and other plant-based beverages.

Abstract
Obesity, pancreatitis, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal (GI), and liver diseases have all been linked to the Western lifestyle, characterized by increased unhealthy food consumption and decreased physical activity. Besides obesity and pancreatitis, many GI and liver diseases are associated with inflammation. Inflammasomes are multi-protein complexes that mediate acute and restorative inflammatory pathways. However, many aberrations in inflammasome activity originate from shifts in dietary habits. Evidence reveals that dietary polyphenols effectively modulate inflammasome-associated dysfunctions. With a focus on pancreatitis, GI, and liver disorders, this review set out to provide the most relevant evidence for the therapeutic impact of polyphenols via the regulation of the inflammasome pathway. Overall, flavonoid and non-flavonoid polyphenols maintain intestinal eubiosis, downregulate NLRP3 inflammasome canonical pathway, and restore redox status via upregulating Nrf2/HO-1 signaling. These effects at the level of the intestine, the liver, and the pancreas are associated with decreased systemic levels of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6.

Abstract
The present study aimed to carry out the physical-chemical, antioxidant, and enzymatic characterization of green tea and kombucha. It was observed that kombucha had lower pH, higher acidity, and solids content compared to green tea. As for the concentration of total phenolic compounds by the Folin Ciocalteu method, there was no significant difference between the beverages. In the antioxidant analysis by the DPPH assay, it was observed that both green tea and kombucha presented significant antioxidant capacity. In the TBARS analysis with the pH of the beverages neutralized, both showed a significant reduction in lipid peroxidation; however, kombucha exhibited pro-oxidant activity when evaluated in its natural form by this method. The beverages also showed significant inhibitory activity of the α-glucosidase enzyme, however, green tea presented superior inhibitory potential.

Abstract
Curcumin (CUR) is a polyphenol extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma longa that possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. Despite CUR's numerous beneficial effects on human health, it has limitations, such as poor absorption. Nano-based drug delivery systems have recently been applied to improve CUR's solubility and bioavailability and potentialize its health effects. This review investigated the effects of different CUR-based nanomedicines on inflammatory and immunomodulated diseases. PUBMED, EMBASE, COCHRANE, and GOOGLE SCHOLAR databases were searched, and the Scale for Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) was used for quality assessment and PRISMA guidelines. Overall, 66 studies were included comprising atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple sclerosis (MS), Huntington's disease (HD), inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), psoriasis, liver fibrosis, epilepsy, and COVID-19. The available scientific studies show that there are many known nanoformulations with curcumin. They can be found in nanosuspensions, nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, solid lipid particles, nanocapsules, nanospheres, and liposomes. These formulations can improve CUR bioavailability and can effectively be used as adjuvants in several inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases such as atheroma plaque formation, RA, dementia, AD, PD, MS, IBD, psoriasis, epilepsy, COVID-19, and can be used as potent anti-fibrotic adjuvants in fibrotic liver disease.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) and plant extracts are sources of beneficial chemical compounds that have potential applications in medicine, food, cosmetics, and the agriculture industry. Plant medicines were the only option for preventing and treating mankind's diseases for centuries. Therefore, plant products are fundamental sources for producing natural drugs. The extraction of the EOs is the first important step in preparing these compounds. Modern extraction methods are effective in the efficient development of these compounds. Moreover, the compounds extracted from plants have natural antimicrobial activity against many spoilage and disease-causing bacteria. Also, the use of plant compounds in cosmetics and hygiene products, in addition to their high marketability, has been helpful for many beauty problems. On the other hand, the agricultural industry has recently shifted more from conventional production systems to authenticated organic production systems, as consumers prefer products without any pesticide and herbicide residues, and certified organic products command higher prices. EOs and plant extracts can be utilized as ingredients in plant antipathogens, biopesticides, and bioherbicides for the agricultural sector. Considering the need and the importance of using EOs and plant extracts in pharmaceutical and other industries, this review paper outlines the different aspects of the applications of these compounds in various sectors.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that a typical kind of oolong tea, Tieguanyin, has multiple health benefits, while there is no research investigating its effects on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we aimed to explore the alleviation effects of Tieguanyin water (TWE) and ethanol (TES) extracts on IBD. Physiological activity status, colitis severity (disease activity index (DAI), colon and spleen weight), inflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)-4, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), IL-17, transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), and IL-10) and microbiota composition were measured in experimental colitis mice induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). TWE and TES exerted remarkable protective effects against experimental colitis, showing decreased colitis severity and improved colon morphology. TES also suppressed colonic inflammation via downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IFN-γ, IL-17, and TGF-β) and upregulation of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. In addition, TWE and TES treatment caused significant alterations in the gut microbiota. Oolong tea extract treatment reduced the community abundance of pernicious bacteria Escherichia-Shigella from 21.6% (DSS) to 0.9% (TES) and 1.2% (TWE), and elevated that of probiotics Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group from 2.2% to 15.2% (TES) and 11.9% (TWE). Therefore, TWE and TES both remarkably ameliorated DSS-induced colitis, which suggested oolong extracts could be a candidate for IBD treatment.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) represents a chronic relapsing–remitting condition affecting the gastrointestinal system. The specific triggering IBD elements remain unknown: genetic variability, environmental factors, and alterations in the host immune system seem to be involved. An unbalanced diet and subsequent gut dysbiosis are risk factors, too. This review focuses on the description of the impact of pro- and anti-inflammatory food components on IBD, the role of different selected regimes (such as Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet, Immunoglobulin Exclusion Diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet, LOFFLEX Diet, Low FODMAPs Diet, Mediterranean Diet) in the IBD management, and their effects on the gut microbiota (GM) composition and balance. The purpose is to investigate the potential positive action on IBD inflammation, which is associated with the exclusion or addition of certain foods or nutrients, to more consciously customize the nutritional intervention, taking also into account GM fluctuations during both disease flare-up and remission.

Abstract
Significance: Carbon monoxide (CO) is an endogenous gaseous mediator that plays an important role in maintaining gastrointestinal (GI) tract homeostasis, acting in mucosal defense, and providing negative modulation of pathophysiological markers of clinical conditions. Recent Advances: Preclinical studies using animal models and/or cell culture show that CO can modulate the inflammatory response and oxidative stress in GI mucosal injuries and pathological conditions, reducing proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species, while increasing antioxidant defense mechanisms. Critical Issues: CO has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The defense mechanisms of the GI tract are subject to aggression by different chemical agents (e.g., drugs and ethanol) as well as complex and multifactorial diseases, with inflammation and oxidative stress as strong triggers for the deleterious effects. Thus, it is possible that CO acts on a variety of molecules involved in the inflammatory and oxidative signaling cascades, as well as reinforcing several defense mechanisms that maintain GI homeostasis. Future Directions: CO-based therapies are promising tools for the treatment of GI disorders, such as gastric and intestinal injuries, inflammatory bowel disease, and pancreatitis. Abstract
Pathogenetically characterized by the absence of celiac disease and wheat allergy, non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is a clinical entity triggered by the consumption of gluten-containing foods that relieved by a gluten-free diet. Since it is very difficult to maintain a complete gluten-free diet, there is a high interest in discovering alternative strategies aimed at reducing gluten concentration or mitigating its toxic effects. Plant-based dietary models are usually rich in bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, recognized to prevent, delay, or even reverse chronic diseases, including intestinal disorders. However, research on the role of polyphenols in mitigating the toxicity of gluten-containing foods is currently limited. We address the metabolic fate of dietary polyphenols, both as free and bound macromolecule-linked forms, with particular reference to the gastrointestinal compartment, where the concentration of polyphenols can reach high levels. We analyze the potential targets of polyphenols including the gluten peptide bioavailability, the dysfunction of the intestinal epithelial barrier, intestinal immune response, oxidative stress and inflammation, and dysbiosis. Overall, this review provides an updated overview of the effects of polyphenols as possible dietary strategies to counteract the toxic effects of gluten, potentially resulting in the improved quality of life of patients with gluten-related disorders.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of green tea extract containing Piper retrofractum fruit (GTP) on dextran-sulfate-sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, the regulatory mechanisms of microRNA (miR)-21, and the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway. Different doses of GTP (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) were administered orally once daily for 14 days, followed by GTP with 3% DSS for 7 days. Compared with the DSS-treated control, GTP administration alleviated clinical symptoms, including the disease activity index (DAI), colon shortening, and the degree of histological damage. Moreover, GTP suppressed miR-21 expression and NF-κB activity in colon tissue of DSS-induced colitis mice. The mRNA levels of inflammatory mediators, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), were downregulated by GTP. Colonic nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were also lowered by GTP. Taken together, our results revealed that GTP inhibits DSS-induced colonic inflammation by suppressing miR-21 expression and NF-κB activity, suggesting that it may be used as a potential functional material for improving colitis.

Abstract
Circadian rhythm is an intrinsic mechanism developed by organisms to adapt to external environmental signals. Nowadays, owing to the job and after-work entertainment, staying up late - Circadian rhythm disorders (CRD) are common. CRD is linked to the development of fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, and chronic gastroenteritis, which affecting the body's metabolic and inflammatory responses via multi-organ crosstalk (gut-liver-brain axis, etc.). However, studies on the mechanisms of multi-organ interactions by CRD are still weak. Current studies on therapeutic agents for CRD remain inadequate, and phytochemicals have been shown to alleviate CRD-induced syndromes that may be used for CRD-therapy in the future. Tea, a popular phytochemical-rich beverage, reduces glucolipid metabolism and inflammation. But it is immature and unclear in the mechanisms of alleviation of CRD-mediated syndrome. Here, we have analyzed the threat of CRD to hosts and their offspring' health from the perspective of the "gut-liver-brain" axis. The potential mechanisms of tea in alleviating CRD were further explored. It might be by interfering with bile acid metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, and G protein-coupled receptors, with FXR, AHR, and GPCR as potential targets. We hope to provide new perspectives on the role of tea in the prevention and mitigation of CRD.HighlightsThe review highlights the health challenges of CRD via the gut-liver-brain axis.CRD research should focus on the health effects on healthy models and its offspring.Tea may prevent CRD by regulating bile acid, tryptophan, and GPCR.Potential targets for tea prevention and mitigation of CRD include FXR, AHR and GPCR.A comprehensive assessment mechanism for tea in improving CRD should be established.

Abstract
Bacterial infection and its severe oxidative stress reaction will cause damage to skin cell mitochondria, resulting in long-lasting wound healing and great pain to patients. Thus, delayed wound healing in diabetic patients with Staphylococcus aureus infection is a principal challenge worldwide. Therefore, novel biomaterials with multifunction of bacterial membrane destruction and skin cell mitochondrial protection are urgently needed to be developed to address this challenge. In this work, novel gold cage (AuNCs) modified with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were prepared to treat delayed diabetic wounds. The results showed that Au-EGCG had a high and stable photothermal conversion efficiency under near-infrared irradiation, and the scavenging rate of Au-EGCG for S. aureus could reach 95%. The production of large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads to the disruption of bacterial membranes, inducing bacterial lysis and apoptosis. Meanwhile, Au-EGCG fused into hydrogel (Au-EGCG@H) promoted the migration and proliferation of human umbilical cord endothelial cells, reduced cellular mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress in the presence of infection, and significantly increased the basic fibroblast growth factor expression and vascular endothelial growth factor. In addition, animal studies showed that wound closure was 97.2% after 12 days of treatment, and the healing of chronic diabetic wounds was significantly accelerated. Au-EGCG nanoplatforms were successfully prepared to promote cell migration and angiogenesis in diabetic rats while removing S. aureus, reducing oxidative stress in cells, and restoring impaired mitochondrial function. Au-EGCG provides an effective, biocompatible, and multifunctional therapeutic strategy for chronic diabetic wounds.

Abstract
Ripened pu-erh tea has the biological activity of antioxidation and anti-inflammation, which inhibits the related parameters of colitis. However, the role of storage-induced changes in bioactive ingredients of ripened pu-erh tea in colitis remains unclear. In this study, 3.5% dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mice were treated with 10 mg/kg bw/day extracts, aged 14 years (P2006) and unaged (P2020) ripened pu-erh tea, respectively, for 1 week. We found that ripened pu-erh tea, especially P2006, inhibited the intestinal oxidative stress-mediated inflammation pathway (TLR4/MyD88/ROS/p38MAPK/NF-κB p65), upregulated the expression of intestinal tight junction proteins (Mucin-2, ZO-1, occludin), promoted M2 polarization of macrophages, and in turn, improved the intestinal immune barrier, which stemmed from the reshaping of intestinal microbiota (e.g., increased Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and Akkermansia levels). Our results speculate that drinking aged ripe pu-erh tea (10 mg/kg bw/day in mice, a human equivalent dose of 7 g/60 kg bw/day) has a practical effect on alleviating and preventing the development of intestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Polyphenols are classified as an organic chemical with phenolic units that display an array of biological functions. However, polyphenols have very low bioavailability and stability, which make polyphenols a less bioactive compound. Many researchers have indicated that several factors might affect the efficiency and the metabolism (biotransformation) of various polyphenols, which include the gut microbiota, structure, and physical properties as well as its interactions with other dietary nutrients (macromolecules). Hence, this mini-review covers the two-way interaction between polyphenols and gut microbiota (interplay) and how polyphenols are metabolized (biotransformation) to produce various polyphenolic metabolites. Moreover, the protective effects of numerous polyphenols and their metabolites against various gastrointestinal disorders/diseases including gastritis, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn’s disease (CD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) like celiac disease (CED) are discussed. For this review, the authors chose only a few popular polyphenols (green tea polyphenol, curcumin, resveratrol, quercetin), and a discussion of their proposed mechanism underpinning the gastroprotection was elaborated with a special focus on clinical evidence. Overall, this contribution would help the general population and science community to identify a potent polyphenol with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, prebiotic, and immunomodulatory properties to combat various gut-related diseases or disorders (complementary therapy) along with modified lifestyle pattern and standard gastroprotective drugs. However, the data from clinical trials are much limited and hence many large-scale clinical trials should be performed (with different form/metabolites and dose) to confirm the gastroprotective activity of the above-mentioned polyphenols and their metabolites before recommendation.

Abstract
Diet plays a pivotal role in the onset and course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients are keen to know what to eat to reduce symptoms and flares, but dietary guidelines are lacking. To advice patients, an overview of the current evidence on food (group) level is needed. This narrative review studies the effects of food (groups) on the onset and course of IBD and if not available the effects in healthy subjects or animal and in vitro IBD models. Based on this evidence the Groningen anti-inflammatory diet (GrAID) was designed and compared on food (group) level to other existing IBD diets. Although on several foods conflicting results were found, this review provides patients a good overview. Based on this evidence, the GrAID consists of lean meat, eggs, fish, plain dairy (such as milk, yoghurt, kefir and hard cheeses), fruit, vegetables, legumes, wheat, coffee, tea and honey. Red meat, other dairy products and sugar should be limited. Canned and processed foods, alcohol and sweetened beverages should be avoided. This comprehensive review focuses on anti-inflammatory properties of foods providing IBD patients with the best evidence on which foods they should eat or avoid to reduce flares. This was used to design the GrAID.

Abstract
Food safety is a growing concern in recent years. This work presents the design of a simple and sensitive method for predicting 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) residue levels in green tea extract employing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled uninformative variable elimination-partial least squares (UVE-PLS). Herein, SERS active citrate functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with enhancement factor 1.51 × 108 was used to prepare cellulose paper (common office) templated SERS sensor for acquiring SERS spectra of 2,4-D. The principle of the work was based on the interaction between 2,4-D and citrate group of AgNPs via chlorine atoms in the concentration range 1.0 × 10-4 to 1.0 × 103 µg/g. Three different wavenumber selection chemometric algorithms were studied comparatively to build an optimum calibration model, among them UVE-PLS showed enhanced performance as evident from the RPD value of 6.01 and Rp = 0.9864. Under optimized experimental condition proposed paper-based SERS sensor exhibited detection limit and RSD of 1.0 × 10-4 µg/g and <5%, respectively. In addition, the validation results by HPLC method were satisfactory (p > 0.05).

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are illnesses characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and microbial dysbiosis that have emerged as a public health challenge worldwide. It comprises two main conditions: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Currently, conventional therapy to treat IBD are not free from side effects, such as liver and kidney toxicity, drug resistance, and allergic reactions. In view of this, there is growing research for alternative and complementary therapies that, in addition to acting in the prevention or the control of the disease, do not compromise the quality of life and health of individuals. In this sense, a growing body of evidence has confirmed the benefits of natural phenolic compounds in intestinal health. Phenolic compounds or polyphenols are molecules widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom (flowers, vegetables, leaves, and fruits), including plant materials remaining of the handling and food industrial processing, referred to in the scientific literature as by-products, food waste, or bagasse. Since by-products are low-cost, abundant, easily accessible, safe, and rich in bioactive compounds, it becomes an exciting option to extract, concentrate or isolate phenolic compounds to be posteriorly applied in the therapeutic approach of IBD. In this article, we have reviewed the main phenolic compounds present in various plants and by-products that have shown beneficial and/or promising effects in experimental pre-clinical, clinical, and in vitro research with IBD. In addition, we have mentioned and suggested several plants and by-products originated and produced in Latin America that could be part of future research as good sources of specific phenolic compounds to be applied in the prevention and development of alternative treatments for IBD. This review may offer a valuable reference for studies related to IBD administering phenolic compounds from natural, cheap, and easily accessible raw and undervalued materials.

Abstract
Functional and nutraceutical foods provide an alternative way to improve immune function to aid in the management of various diseases. Traditionally, many medicinal products have been derived from natural compounds with healing properties. With the development of research into nutraceuticals, it is becoming apparent that many of the beneficial properties of these compounds are at least partly due to the presence of polyphenols. There is evidence that dietary polyphenols can influence dendritic cells, have an immunomodulatory effect on macrophages, increase proliferation of B cells, T cells and suppress Type 1 T helper (Th1), Th2, Th17 and Th9 cells. Polyphenols reduce inflammation by suppressing the pro-inflammatory cytokines in inflammatory bowel disease by inducing Treg cells in the intestine, inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and induction of apoptosis, decreasing DNA damage. Polyphenols have a potential role in prevention/treatment of auto-immune diseases like type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis by regulating signaling pathways, suppressing inflammation and limiting demyelination. In addition, polyphenols cause immunomodulatory effects against allergic reaction and autoimmune disease by inhibition of autoimmune T cell proliferation and downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1, interferon-γ (IFN-γ)). Herein, we summarize the immunomodulatory effects of polyphenols and the underlying mechanisms involved in the stimulation of immune responses.

Abstract
Flavonifractor plautii (FP) has been reported to participate in the metabolism of catechins in the human gut. However, there is limited information on the immune regulatory effects of this bacterium. We confirmed that the administration of green tea increases the abundance of FP in the gut microbiota and investigated the effect of FP in a mouse colitis model. Mice were orally administered FP for 10 consecutive days; colonic inflammation was evaluated daily on the basis of stool consistency, gross rectal bleeding, and body weight. In the dextran sodium sulfate model, FP-exposed animals exhibited lower levels of inflammation and strong inhibition of interleukin (IL)-17 signaling. Moreover, lipoteichoic acid from FP was identified as the active component mediating IL-17 suppression. Thus, oral administration of FP appears to modulate gut inflammation and represents a viable and inexpensive oral microbial therapeutic.

BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are a group of immune and inflammatory diseases; and patients seem to be more vulnerable to influenza and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These conditions are characterized by the augmented release of inflammatory cytokines that have been suggested as potential triggers for the acute respiratory distress syndrome, which may favor severe and even fatal outcomes. For these reasons, this review aims to evaluate what influenza and COVID-19 may represent for patients with IBD. METHODS The search was performed in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to build the review. RESULTS The conventional therapies used by IBD patients may also interfere in the outcomes of influenza and COVID-19. Immune-suppressors agents are associated with a higher risk of infections due to the inhibition of intracellular signals necessary to the host act against pathogens. On the other hand, drugs related to the suppression of the production of cytokines in IBD could bring benefits to reduce mucosal inflammation, and for preventing pneumonia. Moreover, coronaviruses can bind to the target cells through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) receptor that is expressed in epithelial cells of the lung and largely the colon and the terminal ileum suggesting that human intestinal tract could be an alternative route for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). CONCLUSIONS Once the cytokine storm observed in influenza and COVID-19 is similar to the cytokine pattern observed in IBD patients during the disease flares, the advice is that avoiding the infections is still an optimal option for IBD subjects.

Abstract
Patients suffering from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are at higher risk of osteoporosis due to lower bone mineral density. Risk factors of osteoporosis are divided into unmodifiable, namely, age, gender, genetic factors, as well as modifiable, including diet, level of physical activity, and the use of stimulants. Coffee and tea contain numerous compounds affecting bone metabolism. Certain substances such as antioxidants may protect bones; other substances may increase bone resorption. Nevertheless, the influence of coffee and tea on the development and course of inflammatory bowel diseases is contradictory.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite significant advances in the study of Ulcerative colitis (UC) management, up to a third of patients may be refractory to conventional therapy, and specialists have considered natural compounds such as curcumin. AREA COVERED The meta-analyzes found in the literature compare the effects of curcumin used in different administration routes or compare patients in remission with patients with active disease. Due to the biases in these studies, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that investigated the efficacy of orally administrated curcumin in mild-to-moderate active UC. EXPERT OPINION Curcumin produces relevant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that are crucial in inducing remission in UC patients. Unfortunately, in the treatment of UC, we have not observed studies with standardization of dose and routes of administration. Existing meta-analyses are biased because they compare studies using different administration routes and patients in different stages of the disease. Our meta-analysis is the only one that tried to make a comparison with a few of biases as possible and show that curcumin can help in the induction of remission in UC subjects.

Abstract
Autoimmune and inflammatory diseases affect innumerous people and are considered a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and Curcuma sp can work as important therapies in the approach of these diseases. For this reason the aim of this review is to evaluate the effects of Curcuma or curcumin in five autoimmune and/or inflammatory diseases for instance, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Osteoarthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematous, Psoriasis, and Sclerosis. MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched and PRISMA guidelines were used to build this systematic review. Curcuma sp or curcumin have been gaining ground in the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases due to the wide range of bioactive compounds capable of exerting substantial anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. The effects can be associated with improvement of symptoms and induction of remission in Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients; reduction of erythema and induration of lesions in psoriasis; and slow down the disease progression in patients with sclerosis. Furthermore, curcumin shows effects equivalent to ibuprofen and diclofenac, without the adverse effects generally reported by patients. Curcuma or its derivatives can be used safely and efficiently as adjuvants or as a main therapy for these diseases that increase year by year in the world population.

Abstract
Significance: Oxidative stress in moderation positively affects homeostasis through signaling, while in excess it is associated with adverse health outcomes. Both activities are generally attributed to reactive oxygen species (ROS); hydrogen peroxide as the signal, and cysteines on regulatory proteins as the target. However, using antioxidants to affect signaling or benefit health has not consistently translated into expected outcomes, or when it does, the mechanism is often unclear. Recent Advances: Reactive sulfur species (RSS) were integral in the origin of life and throughout much of evolution. Sophisticated metabolic pathways that evolved to regulate RSS were easily "tweaked" to deal with ROS due to the remarkable similarities between the two. However, unlike ROS, RSS are stored, recycled, and chemically more versatile. Despite these observations, the relevance and regulatory functions of RSS in extant organisms are generally underappreciated. Critical Issues: A number of factors bias observations in favor of ROS over RSS. Research conducted in room air is hyperoxic to cells, and promotes ROS production and RSS oxidation. Metabolic rates of rodent models greatly exceed those of humans; does this favor ROS? Analytical methods designed to detect ROS also respond to RSS. Do these disguise the contributions of RSS? Future Directions: Resolving the ROS/RSS issue is vital to understand biology in general and human health in particular. Improvements in experimental design and analytical methods are crucial. Perhaps the most important is an appreciation of all the attributes of RSS and keeping an open mind.

Abstract
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract,
which is characterized by Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is
a chronic idiopathic relapsing colon disease distinguishes by the interference of epithelial
wall and colonic site tenderness. For the treatment of ulcerative colitis, various side effects
have been reported, due to the non-specific delivery of the targeted drug of the conventional
system. This review will explain the reader about various considerations for the preparation
of orally administered NPs drug delivery systems for the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
Moreover, principles and novel strategies for colon targeting based on the physiology
of colon so that the tract of gastro intestine can be used as the identification marker for a
target site for drugs. Besides this, the role of phytomedicines in controlling and managing
the ulcerative colitis has been discussed. Additionally, the major problem for the smart delivery
of NPs in clinical applications with their difficulties in Intellectual Property Rights
(IPR) was also discussed. Finally, this review provides various potential approaches to NPs
for the treatment of UC.

Abstract
Matcha and green tea catechins such as (−)-epicatechin (EC), (−)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) have long been studied for their antioxidant and health-promoting effects. Using specific fluorophores for H2S (AzMC) and polysulfides (SSP4) as well as IC-MS and UPLC-MS/MS-based techniques we here show that popular Japanese and Chinese green teas and select catechins all catalytically oxidize hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to polysulfides with the potency of EGC > EGCG >> EG. This reaction is accompanied by the formation of sulfite, thiosulfate and sulfate, consumes oxygen and is partially inhibited by the superoxide scavenger, tempol, and superoxide dismutase but not mannitol, trolox, DMPO, or the iron chelator, desferrioxamine. We propose that the reaction proceeds via a one-electron autoxidation process during which one of the OH-groups of the catechin B-ring is autooxidized to a semiquinone radical and oxygen is reduced to superoxide, either of which can then oxidize HS− to thiyl radicals (HS•) which react to form hydrogen persulfide (H2S2). H2S oxidation reduces the B-ring back to the hydroquinone for recycling while the superoxide is reduced to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Matcha and catechins also concentration-dependently and rapidly produce polysulfides in HEK293 cells with the potency order EGCG > EGC > EG, an EGCG threshold of ~300 nM, and an EC50 of ~3 μM, suggesting green tea also acts as powerful pro-oxidant in vivo. The resultant polysulfides formed are not only potent antioxidants, but elicit a cascade of secondary cytoprotective effects, and we propose that many of the health benefits of green tea are mediated through these reactions. Remarkably, all green tea leaves constitutively contain small amounts of H2S2.

Abstract
Some coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients develop acute pneumonia which can result in a cytokine storm syndrome in response to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The most effective anti-inflammatory drugs employed so far in severe COVID-19 belong to the cytokine-directed biological agents, widely used in the management of many autoimmune diseases. In this paper we analyze the efficacy of epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant ingredient in green tea leaves and a well-known antioxidant, in counteracting autoimmune diseases, which are dominated by a massive cytokines production. Indeed, many studies registered that EGCG inhibits signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)1/3 and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) transcription factors, whose activities are crucial in a multiplicity of downstream pro-inflammatory signaling pathways. Importantly, the safety of EGCG/green tea extract supplementation is well documented in many clinical trials, as discussed in this review. Since EGCG can restore the natural immunological homeostasis in many different autoimmune diseases, we propose here a supplementation therapy with EGCG in COVID-19 patients. Besides some antiviral and anti-sepsis actions, the major EGCG benefits lie in its anti-fibrotic effect and in the ability to simultaneously downregulate expression and signaling of many inflammatory mediators. In conclusion, EGCG can be considered a potential safe natural supplement to counteract hyper-inflammation growing in COVID-19.

Abstract
Se-enriched green tea, with an increasing consumption, is the shoot of tea plants grown naturally in a seleniferous region. A label-free proteomic strategy based on ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole Orbitrap was applied to characterize and distinguish the difference between the Se-enriched and normal green tea with a total of 283 proteins identified and 264 proteins quantified, in which 96 proteins were observed different. The expressions of 10 proteins were upregulated and 40 proteins were downregulated (p < 0.05) in Se-enriched samples. Gene ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway, and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis results indicated that these differentially expressed proteins significantly interacted and were involved in secondary metabolites and inflammatory response biological processes. Furthermore, the expression of methyl-jasmonate- and ethylene-related genes changed significantly in Se-enriched green tea, and catalase proteins were employed as the center of the pathway that changed significantly in the PPI network. These results associating with the current knowledge of selenium in soil-plant cycling revealed that organic selenium was synthesized in green tea, which provided novel information on Se assimilation in Camellia sinensis and improved the understanding of Se-enriched green tea as a possible ideal selenium supplement in daily life.

Abstract
Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug that is also used for post-herpetic neuralgia and neuropathic pain. Recently, gabapentin showed anti-inflammatory effect. Nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) is a regulator of the inflammatory process, and Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) is an important receptor involved in NFκB regulation. The aim of the present work was to study the potential role of PPAR-gamma receptor in gabapentin-mediated anti-inflammatory effects in a colitis experimental model. We induced colitis in rats using trinitrobenzenosulfonic acid and treated them with gabapentin and bisphenol A dicyldidyl ether (PPAR-gamma inhibitor). Macroscopic lesion scores, wet weight, histopathological analysis, mast cell count, myeloperoxidase, malondialdehyde acid, glutathione, nitrate/nitrite, and interleukin levels in the intestinal mucosa were determined. In addition, western blots were performed to determine the expression of Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and NFκB; Nitric Oxide Inducible Synthase (iNOS) and Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) levels were also determined. Gabapentin was able to decrease all inflammatory parameters macroscopic and microscopic in addition to reducing markers of oxidative stress and cytokines such as IL-1β and Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α) as well as enzymes inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase 2 and inflammatory genic regulator (NFκB). These effect attributed to gabapentin was observed to be lost in the presence of the specific inhibitor of PPAR-gamma. Gabapentin inhibits bowel inflammation by regulating mast cell signaling. Furthermore, it activates the PPAR-gamma receptor, which in turn inhibits the activation of NFκB, and consequently results in reduced activation of inflammatory genes involved in inflammatory bowel diseases.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was the development of an innovative in situ gelling system, to be applied on the mucosa of the distal colon via rectal route. The system consisted of three polymers having different functions: gellan (GG), able to jellify in presence of ions; methylcellulose (MC), a thermosensitive polymer with a gelation temperature close to 50 °C; and hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), a mucoadhesive polymer. The three polymers were able to act synergistically, increasing the permanence of the vehicle on the mucosa and forming a protective gel layer. A DoE approach, "simplex centroid mixture design," was used to identify the optimal quantitative composition of the vehicle. The response variables considered were: vehicle viscosity at room temperature; increase in vehicle viscosity on increasing temperature (from room to physiological value) and upon dilution with simulated colonic fluid (SCF); and viscoelastic behavior, thixotropic area, and mucoadhesion properties of the gel formed at 37 °C upon dilution in SCF. The optimized vehicle was loaded with maqui berry extract (MBE), known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. MBE loading (0.5% w/w) into the vehicle improved rheological and mucoadhesive properties of the formulation. Both MBE and the optimized vehicle were not cytotoxic towards human fibroblasts and Caco-2 cells. Moreover, the optimized vehicle did not affect MBE antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Bacterial biofilms are multicellular aggregates in which cells are embedded in an extracellular matrix of self-produced biopolymers. Being refractory to antibiotic treatment and host immune systems, biofilms are involved in most chronic infections, and anti-biofilm agents are being searched for urgently. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) was recently shown to act against biofilms by strongly interfering with the assembly of amyloid fibres and the production of phosphoethanolamin-modified cellulose fibrils. Mechanistically, this includes a direct inhibition of the fibre assembly, but also triggers a cell envelope stress response that down-regulates the synthesis of these widely occurring biofilm matrix polymers. Based on its anti-amyloidogenic properties, EGCG seems useful against biofilms involved in cariogenesis or chronic wound infection. However, EGCG seems inefficient against or may even sometimes promote biofilms which rely on other types of matrix polymers, suggesting that searching for 'magic bullet' anti-biofilm agents is an unrealistic goal. Combining molecular and ecophysiological aspects in this review also illustrates why plants control the formation of biofilms on their surfaces by producing anti-amyloidogenic compounds such as EGCG. These agents are not only helpful in combating certain biofilms in chronic infections but even seem effective against the toxic amyloids associated with neuropathological diseases.

Abstract
Background: Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) encompasses both Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, known to be connected to an enlarged risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) is a Mediterranean plant used as an aromatic agent, and studies have mainly focused on the essential oil suggesting an anti-inflammatory activity. This work aimed to perform a preliminary screening of the in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of a spearmint phenolic extract in an acute inflammation model, in a chronic inflammation model of colitis, and also study the effects in vitro on a colon cancer model. Methods: Spearmint extract was administered to rats of a paw oedema model (induced by carrageenan) and to mice from a TNBS-induced colitis model in parallel with studies using HT-29 CRC cells. Results: Administration of the extract led to reduced paw inflammation, reduction of colon injury and inflammation, with attenuation of histological markers, and reduction of iNOS expression. It repressed the in vitro movement of HT-29 cells in a wound healing assay. Conclusions: These findings suggest that spearmint extract exhibits acute and chronic anti-inflammatory activity and is able to inhibit migration of cancer cells, suggesting a potential role in the supplementary therapy of IBD patients.
