A review of occurrence, bioaccumulation, and fate of novel brominated flame retardants in aquatic environments: A comparison with legacy brominated flame retardants

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have been developed as replacements for legacy brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs). The prevalence of NBFRs in aquatic environments has initiated intense concerns that they resemble to BFRs. To comprehensively elucidate the fate of NBFRs in aquatic environments, this review summarizes the physico-chemical properties, distribution, bioaccumulation, and fates in aquatic environments. 1,2-bis(2,3,4,5,6-pentabromophenyl) ethane (DBDPE) as the major substitute for PBDEs is the primary NBFR. The release from industrial point sources such as e-waste recycling stations is the dominant way for NBFRs to enter the environment, which results in significant differences in the regional distribution of NBFRs. Sediment is the major sink of NBFRs attributed to the high hydrophobicity. Significantly, there is no decreasing trend of NBFRs concentrations, while PBDEs achieved the peak value in 1970-2000 and decreased gradually. The bioaccumulation of NBFRs is reported in both field studies and laboratory studies, which is regulated by the active area, lipid contents, trophic level of aquatic organisms, and the log KOW of NBFRs. The biotransformation of NBFRs showed similar metabolism patterns to that of BFRs, including debromination, hydroxylation, methoxylation, hydrolysis, and glycosylation. In addition, NBFRs show great potential in trophic magnification along the aquatic food chain, which could pose a higher risk to high trophic-level species. The passive uptake by roots dominates the plant uptake of NBFRs, followed by acropetal and basipetal bidirectional transportation between roots and leaves in plants. This review will provide the support to understand the current pollution characteristics of NBFRs and highlight perspectives for future research.

Species-specific and habitat-dependent bioaccumulation of halogenated flame retardants in marine organisms from estuary to coastal seas

Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) have attracted global attention owing to their adverse effects on ecosystems and humans. The Shandong Peninsula is the largest manufacturing base for HFRs in East Asia, yet its impacts on marine ecosystems are unclear. Seventeen HFRs were analyzed in organisms captured from the Xiaoqing River estuary, Bohai Sea (BS), Yellow Sea and Northern East China Sea to investigate the distribution and bioaccumulation of HFRs on a broad scale. The results showed a downward trend in ΣHFR concentrations from the estuary (37.7 ng/g lw on average) to Laizhou Bay (192 ng/g lw) and to coastal seas (3.13 ng/g lw). The concentrations of ΣHFRs were significantly higher in demersal fish (0.71-198 ng/g lw) and benthic invertebrates (0.81-3340 ng/g lw) than in pelagic fish (0.30-27.6 ng/g lw), reflecting a habitat dependence. The concentrations of higher-brominated homologs were greater in benthic invertebrates, whereas a greater level of lower-brominated PBDE congeners was observed in fish, suggesting different profiles between species. Furthermore, the analogue composition of HFRs in fish was similar to that in the dissolved phase of seawater, whereas the HFR pattern in benthic invertebrates was consistent with the profile in sediment. The concentrations of HFRs in organisms vary widely depending on emissions from anthropogenic activities, whereas bioaccumulation patterns are strongly influenced by species and habitat.

High-proportions of tailwater discharge alter microbial community composition and assembly in receiving sediments

The tailwater from wastewater treatment plants serves as an important water resource in arid regions, alleviating the conflict between supply and demand. However, the effects of different tailwater discharge proportions on microbial community dynamics remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of different tailwater discharge proportions on the water quality and microbial community characteristics of sediments in receiving water bodies under controlled conditions (WF-1, WF-2, WF-3, WF-4, and WF-5, containing 0% tailwater + 100% natural water, 25% tailwater + 75% natural water, 50% tailwater + 50% natural water, 75% tailwater + 25% natural water, and 100% tailwater + 0% natural water, respectively). Microbial co-occurrence networks and structural equation model were used to unveil the relationship between microbial communities and their shaping factors. Results showed that distinct microbial community compositions were found in the sediments with low- (< 50%) and high- (> 50%) proportions of tailwater. Specifically, WCHB1-41 and g_4-29-1, which are involved in organic degradation-related functions, were the key genera in the high-proportion cluster. A total of 21 taxa were more abundant in the low-proportion (< 50%) cluster than that in high-proportion (> 50%). Moreover, higher modularity was observed in the low-proportion. Total phosphorus directly affected while ammonia nitrogen indirectly affected the microbial community structure. Our findings support the distinct heterogeneity of microbial communities driven by tailwater discharge in receiving water bodies, and further confirmed that high-proportion tailwater depletes sensitive microbial communities, which may be avoided through scientific management.

Interactions of Brominated Flame Retardants with Membrane Models of Dehalogenating Bacteria: Langmuir Monolayer and Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction Studies

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are small organic molecules containing several bromine substituents added to plastics to limit their flammability. BFRs can constitute up to 30% of the weight of some plastics, which is why they are produced in large quantities. Along with plastic waste and microplastic particles, BFRs end up in the soil and can easily leach causing contamination. As polyhalogenated molecules, multiple BFRs were classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), meaning that their biodegradation in the soils is especially challenging. However, some anaerobic bacteria as Dehaloccocoides can dehalogenate BFRs, which is important in the bioremediation of contaminated soils. BFRs are hydrophobic, can accumulate in plasma membranes, and disturb their function. On the other hand, limited membrane accumulation is necessary for BFR dehalogenation. To study the BFR-membrane interaction, we created membrane models of soil dehalogenating bacteria and tested their interactions with seven legacy and novel BFRs most common in soils. Phospholipid Langmuir monolayers with appropriate composition were used as membrane models. These membranes were doped in the selected BFRs, and the incorporation of BFR molecules into the phospholipid matrix and also the effects of BFR presence on membrane physical properties and morphology were studied. It turned out that the seven BFRs differed significantly in their membrane affinity. For some, the incorporation was very limited, and others incorporated effectively and could affect membrane properties, while one of the tested molecules induced the formation of bilayer domains in the membranes. Thus, Langmuir monolayers can be effectively used for pretesting BFR membrane activity.

Computational Insights into Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes with the Organophosphorus Flame Retardant DOPO

Cyclodextrins (CDs) were used as green char promoters in the formulation of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) for polymeric materials, and they could reduce the amount of usage of OPFRs and their release into the environment by forming [host:guest] inclusion complexes with them. Here, we report a systematic study on the inclusion complexes of natural CDs (α-, β-, and γ-CD) with a representative OPFR of DOPO using computational methods of molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and quantum mechanical (QM) calculations. The binding modes and energetics of [host:guest] inclusion complexes were analyzed in details. α-CD was not able to form a complete inclusion complex with DOPO, and the center of mass distance [host:guest] distance amounted to 4-5 Å. β-CD and γ-CD allowed for a deep insertion of DOPO into their hydrophobic cavities, and DOPO was able to frequently change its orientation within the γ-CD cavity. The energy decomposition analysis based on the dispersion-corrected density functional theory (sobEDAw) indicated that electrostatic, orbital, and dispersion contributions favored [host:guest] complexation, while the exchange-repulsion term showed the opposite. This work provides an in-depth understanding of using CD inclusion complexes in OPFRs formulations.

Mechanistic insight into biotransformation of novel triazine-based flame retardant 1,3,5-tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4,6-trione by human cytochrome P450s

The escalating focus on the environmental occurrence and toxicology of emerging pollutants underscores the imperative need for a profound exploration of their metabolic transformations mediated by human CYP450 enzymes. Such investigations have the potential to unravel the intricate metabolite profiles, substantially altering the toxicological outcomes. In this study, we integrated the computational simulations with in vitro metabolism experiments to investigate the metabolic activity and mechanism of an emerging pollutant, 1,3,5-tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4,6-trione (TDBP-TAZTO), catalyzed by human CYP450s. The results highlight the important contributions of CYP2E1, 3A4 and 2C9 to the biotransformation of TDBP-TAZTO, leading to the identification of four distinct metabolites. The effective binding conformations governing biotransformation reactions of TDBP-TAZTO within active CYP450s are unveiled. Structural instability of primary hydroxyTDBP-TAZTO products suggests three potential outcomes: (1) generation of an alcohol metabolite through successive debromination and reduction reactions, (2) formation of a dihydroxylated metabolite through secondary hydroxylation by CYP450, and (3) production of an N-dealkylated metabolite via decomposition and isomerization reactions in the aqueous environment. The formation of a desaturated debrominated metabolite may arise from H-abstraction and barrier-free Br release during the primary oxidation, potentially competing with the generation of hydroxyTDBP-TAZTO. These findings provide detailed mechanistic insight into TDBP-TAZTO biotransformation by CYP450s, which can enrich our understanding of the metabolic fate and associated health risk of this chemical.

Aging and mitigation of microplastics during sewage sludge treatments: An overview

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) receive large quantities of microplastics (MPs) from raw wastewater, but many MPs are trapped in the sludge. Land application of sludge is a significant source of MP pollution. Existing reviews have summarized the analysis methods of MPs in sludge and the effect of MPs on sludge treatments. However, MP aging and mitigation during sludge treatment processes are not fully reviewed. Treatment processes used to remove water, pathogenic microorganisms, and other pollutants in sewage sludge also cause surface changes and degradation in the sludge MPs, affecting the potential risk of MPs. This study integrates MP abundance and distribution in sludge and their aging and mitigation characteristics during sludge treatment processes. The abundance, composition, and distribution of sludge MPs vary significantly with WWTPs. Furthermore, MPs exhibit variable degrees of aging, including rough surfaces, enhanced adsorption potentials for pollutants, and increased leaching behavior. Various sludge treatment processes further intensify these aging characteristics. Some sludge treatments, such as hydrothermal treatment, have efficiently removed MPs from sewage sludge. It is crucial to understand the potential risk of MP aging in sludge and the degradation properties of the MP-derived products from MP degradation in-depth and develop novel MP mitigation strategies in sludge, such as combining hydrothermal treatment and biological processes.

Bioaccumulation and Trophodynamics of Novel Brominated Flame Retardants (NBFRs) in Marine Food Webs from the Arctic and Antarctic Regions

The pervasive contamination of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in remote polar ecosystems has attracted great attention in recent research. However, understanding regarding the trophic transfer behavior of NBFRs in the Arctic and Antarctic marine food webs is limited. In this study, we examined the occurrence and trophodynamics of NBFRs in polar benthic marine sediment and food webs collected from areas around the Chinese Arctic Yellow River Station (n = 57) and Antarctic Great Wall Station (n = 94). ∑7NBFR concentrations were in the range of 1.27-7.47 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and 0.09-1.56 ng/g lw in the Arctic and Antarctic marine biota, respectively, among which decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the predominant compound in all sample types. The biota-sediment bioaccumulation factors (g total organic carbon/g lipid) of NBFRs in the Arctic (0.85-3.40) were 4-fold higher than those in the Antarctica (0.13-0.61). Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) and their 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of individual NBFRs ranged from 0.43 (95% CI: 0.32, 0.60) to 1.32 (0.92, 1.89) and from 0.34 (0.24, 0.49) to 0.92 (0.56, 1.51) in the Arctic and Antarctic marine food webs, respectively. The TMFs of most congeners were significantly lower than 1, indicating a trophic dilution potential. This is one of the very few investigations on the trophic transfer of NBFRs in remote Arctic and Antarctic marine ecosystems, which provides a basis for exploring the ecological risks of NBFRs in polar regions.

Effect of brominated flame retardants exposure on liver function and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in the US population

BACKGROUND

The relationship between brominated flame retardants (BFRs) exposure and the human liver was still not well understood.

METHODS

A total of 3108 participants (age > 12) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 2005 to 2016 were included as the study population, with nine BFRs exhibiting a detection rate of over 70% serving as the exposure factor. The singular effects and combined effects of BFRs exposure on liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and advanced hepatic fibrosis (AHF) were evaluated separately. Finally, COX regression was employed to explore the hazard ratios associated with individual BFRs.

RESULTS

In our analysis of individual exposures, we found significant positive association of PBB153 with alanine aminotransferase (ALT), PBB153 with aspartate aminotransferase (AST), PBDE47, PBDE85, PBDE99, PBDE100, and PBDE154 with alkaline phosphatase (ALP), PBDE28 and PBB153 with gamma-glutamyl transaminase (GGT), PBB153 with the risk of NAFLD and AHF; and significant negative association of PBB153 with ALP, PBDE28, PBDE47, PBDE99, PBDE100, PBDE85, PBDE209, and PBDE154 with albumin (ALB), PBB153 with AST/ALT. The nonlinear analysis results from Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) further validated these associations (all P<0.05). In the mixed analysis combining Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and Quantile G-computation (QGC) analysis, BFRs were positively associated with ALT (β>0, P<0.001), GGT (β>0, P<0.001), and the risk of NAFLD (OR>1, P=0.007). Conversely, BFRs exhibited significant negative correlations with ALP (β<0, P<0.001), ALB (β<0, P<0.001), and AST/ALT (β<0, P<0.001). Furthermore, the COX regression analysis revealed that PBB153 had the highest hazard ratio among the BFRs.

CONCLUSIONS

BFR exposure may increase the risk of liver injury and NAFLD, with no significant association with AHF risk. The impact of BFR exposure on liver health should not be overlooked, especially in individuals residing in impoverished areas.

The transport and distribution of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) in soils and moss along mountain valleys in the Himalayas

Although the Himalayas act as a natural barrier, studies have demonstrated that certain traditional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can be transported into the Tibetan Plateau (TP) through the mountain valleys. Herein, we selected five mountain valleys in the Himalayas to investigate novel flame retardants (NFRs), as representative novel POPs, their concentration, distribution, transport behavior, potential sources and ecological risk. The results revealed that total concentrations of 7 novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) ranged from 4.89 to 2853 pg/g dry weight (dw) in soil and from not detected (ND) to 4232 pg/g dw in moss. Additionally, total concentrations of 10 organophosphate esters (OPEs) ranged from ND to 84798 pg/g dw in soil. Among the NFRs, decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) and tri-phenyl phosphate (TPhP) were the predominant compounds. NBFRs and OPEs concentrations were slightly higher than those in the polar regions. The correlation between different compounds and altitude varies in different areas, indicating that the NFRs distribution in the mountain valleys result from a combination of long-range transport and local sources. The ecological risk assessment using risk quotient (RQs) revealed that TPhP and tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) exhibited medium or high risks at some sites. This study sheds light on the transport pathways and environmental behaviors of the NFRs in the valleys and highlights the need for increased attention to the ecological risks posed by OPEs in the TP.

Kelp as a biomonitor of persistent organic pollutants in coastal areas of China: Contamination levels and human health risk

Kelp, the brown alga distributed in coastal areas all over the world, is also an important medicine food homology product in China. However, the levels and profiles of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in kelp have not been thoroughly investigated to date. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and emerging bromine flame retardants (eBFRs) were evaluated in 41 kelp samples from the main kelp producing areas in China. The concentrations of total PCBs, PBDEs and eBFRs were in the range of 0.321-4.24 ng/g dry weight (dw), 0.255-25.5 ng/g dw and 3.00 × 10-3-47.2 ng/g dw in kelp, respectively. The pollutant pattern was dominated by decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE, 13.0 ± 11.7 ng/g dw) followed in decreasing order by BDE-209 (2.74 ± 4.09 ng/g dw), CB-11 (1.32 ± 1.06 ng/g dw). The tested results showed that kelp could reflect the pollution status of PCBs, PBDEs and eBFRs, indicating the suitability of kelp as a biomonitor of these harmful substances. Finally, the data obtained was used to evaluate human non-cancer and cancer risks of PCBs and PBDEs via kelp consumption for Chinese. Though the calculated risk indices were considered acceptable according to the international standards even in the worst scenarios, the POPs levels in kelp should be monitored continuously as a good environmental indicator.

Flame-Retardant GF-PSB/DOPO-POSS Composite with Low Dk/Df and High Thermal Stability for High-Frequency Copper Clad Applications

In the field of high-frequency communications devices, there is an urgent need to develop high-performance copper clad laminates (CCLs) with low dielectric loss (Df) plus good flame retardancy and thermal stability. The hydrocarbon resin styrene-butadiene block copolymer (PSB) was modified with the flame-retardant 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (DOPO-POSS) to meet the demands of high-frequency and high-speed applications. The resulting DOPO-POSS-modified PSB was used as the resin matrix along with other additives to fabricate PSB/DOPO-POSS laminates. At a high-frequency of 10 GHz, the laminates containing 20 wt.% of DOPO-POSS and with a thickness of 0.09 mm exhibited a Df of 0.00328, which is much lower compared with the commercial PSB/PX-200 composite (Df: 0.00498) and the PSB without flame retardancy (Df: 0.00453). Afterwards, glass fiber cloth (GF) was used as a reinforcing material to manufacture GF-PSB/DOPO-POSS composite laminates with a thickness of 0.25 mm. The flame retardancy of GF-PSB/DOPO-POSS composite laminate reached vertical burning (UL-94) V-1 grade, and GF-PSB/DOPO-POSS exhibited higher thermal and dynamic mechanical properties than GF-PSB/PX-200. The results of a limited oxygen index (LOI) and self-extinguishing time tests also demonstrated the superior flame-retardant performance of DOPO-POSS compared with PX-200. The investigation indicates that GF-PSB/DOPO-POSS composite laminates have significant potential for use in fabricating a printed circuit board (PCB) for high-frequency and high-speed applications.

Multi-process regulation of novel brominated flame retardants: Environmentally friendly substitute design, screening and environmental risk regulation

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), one of the most widely used synthetic flame-retardant materials, have been considered as a new group of pollutants that potentially affect human health. To overcome the adverse effects of NBFRs, a systematic approach for molecular design, screening, and performance evaluation was developed to generate environmentally friendly NBFR derivatives with unaltered functionality. In the present study, the features of NBFRs (long-distance migration, biotoxicity, bioenrichment, and environmental persistence) were determined and characterized by the multifactor comprehensive characterization method with equal weight addition, and the similarity index analysis (CoMSIA) model was constructed. Based on the three-dimensional equipotential diagram of the target molecule 2-ethylhexyl tetrabromobenzoic acid (TBB), 23 TBB derivatives were designed. Of these, 22 derivatives with decreased environmental impact and unaltered functional properties (i.e., flame retardancy and stability) were selected using 3D-QSAR models and density functional theory methods. The health risks of these derivatives to humans were assessed by toxicokinetic analysis; the results narrowed down the number of candidates to three (Derivative-7, Derivative-10, and Derivative-15). The environmental impact of these candidates was further evaluated and regulated in the real-world environment by using molecular dynamics simulation assisted by the Taguchi experimental design method. The relationship between the binding effects and the nonbonding interaction resultant force (TBB derivatives-receptor proteins) was also studied, and it was found that the larger the modulus of the binding force, the stronger the binding ability of the two. This finding indicated that the environmental impact of the designed NBFR derivatives was decreased. The present study aimed to provide a new idea and method for designing NBFR substitutes and to provide theoretical support for restraining the potential environmental risks of NBFRs.

Occurrence and accumulation characteristics of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in surface soil and river sediments from the downstream of Chuhe River basin, East China

Surface soil and river sediment samples were collected from the downstream of Chuhe River basin, East China, to investigate the occurrence and accumulation characteristics of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs). The respective concentrations of BDE-209 and nine NBFRs ranged from n.d. to 41.4 ng/g dry weight (dw) and from 0.35 to 362.78 ng/g dw in the collected surface soil samples and ranged from 0.29 to 19.73 ng/g dw and from 0.70 to 66.83 ng/g dw in the collected river sediment samples. Soil samples exhibited a higher potential to accumulate BTBPE while the relative abundance of PBT in the collected sediment samples was significantly higher than that in soils. Even so, BTBPE was the predominant NBFR in both soil and sediment samples. The concentrations and relative abundances of legacy and NBFRs exhibited large spatial variation. The calculated concentration ratios of the total of the nine NBFRs (∑9NBFRs) to BDE-209 (∑9NBFRs/BDE-209) in most of the analyzed samples far exceeded 1, implying a clear shift from legacy brominated flame retardants to NBFRs in the downstream of Chuhe River basin.

First evidence and potential sources of novel brominated flame retardants and BDE 209 in the deepest ocean

Organic anthropogenic pollutants reach even the deepest parts of the oceans, i.e., the hadal trenches. We here presented the concentrations, influencing factors, and potential sources of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in hadal sediments and amphipods from the Mariana, Mussau and New Britain trenches. Results showed that BDE 209 was the dominant PBDEs congener and DBDPE was the dominant NBFRs. No significant correlation was found between TOC contents and PBDEs or NBFRs levels in sediment. Lipid content and body length were the potential important factors affecting variation in pollutant concentrations in the carapace & muscle of amphipods, while the pollution levels of viscera were mainly affected by the sex and lipid content. PBDEs and NBFRs might reach trench surface seawater through long-range atmospheric transport and oceans currents but with little contribution from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Determination of carbon and nitrogen isotopes indicated that the pollutants were transported and accumulated in amphipods and sediment via different pathways. PBDEs and NBFRs in the hadal sediments were generally transported via the settling of sediment particles of either marine or terrigenous origin whereas in amphipods they accumulated via feeding on animal carrion through the food web. This is the first study reporting on BDE 209 and NBFR contaminations in hadal settings and provide new insight on influencing factors and sources of PBDEs and NBFRs in the deepest oceans.

Temporal trends in concentrations of brominated flame retardants in UK foodstuffs suggest active impacts of global phase-out of PBDEs and HBCDD

Global restrictions on use of legacy brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) have generated demand for novel BFRs (NBFRs) as substitutes. Our research group has previously reported decreased concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDD and increased concentrations of NBFRs in UK indoor environments, suggesting that restrictions on PBDEs and HBCDD are exerting an impact. In this study, we analysed UK foodstuffs collected in 2020-21 and compared the BFR concentrations found with those found in similar samples collected in 2015 to investigate whether similar trends in BFR concentrations would be observed. Concentrations of PBDEs and HBCDD isomers detected in our samples had declined by 78-92 % and 59-97 % since the 2015 study, respectively. Moreover, concentrations of NBFRs (dominated by 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE or TBE), and bis(2-ethyl hexyl) tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP or TBPH)) in UK foodstuffs increased significantly (28-1400 %) between 2015 and 2020-21. Combined, these findings suggest that restrictions on use of PBDEs and HBCDD have had a discernible impact on concentrations of these legacy BFRs and their NBFR replacements in UK foodstuffs. Interestingly, given recent reports of a significant increase in concentrations of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in UK house dust between 2014 and 2019, a significant decline (70-84 %) in concentrations of DBDPE was observed in UK foodstuffs.

Occurrence and tissue-specific partitioning of alternative brominated flame retardants in northwest Atlantic harbor seal pups (Phoca vitulina vitulina)

Brominated flame retardants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used for decades until evidence of negative health effects led to bans in many countries. PBDEs have since been replaced by alternative legacy compounds or newly developed chemicals. In this study, eight alternative brominated flame retardants were analyzed in blubber and liver of harbor seal pups (≤6 months) from the Northwest Atlantic collected during 2001-2010 to elucidate concentrations, patterns, contamination trends, potential maternal transfer, and tissue partitioning. All compounds were detected in liver and blubber tissues with hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) isomers and 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (TBB) predominating. Overall, α-HBCD was the dominant HBCD isomer in both tissues although the concentrations of γ-HBCD exceeded those of α-HBCD in seven pups, indicating their mothers may have had alternative dietary patterns or recent exposure to the commercial mixture. Although it was detected in less than half of the samples, to our knowledge, this is the first study to report tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) concentrations in multiple tissues of a top marine predator. For the brominated components of Firemaster® flame retardants, TBB concentrations exceeded bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH). This pattern may result from recent exposure to commercial mixtures in which TBB exceeds TBPH 4:1 or from differences in perinatal or lactational transfer efficiency of the two compounds. Between the two tissues, lipid-normalized β-HBCD, γ-HBCD, TBB and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) concentrations were significantly higher in liver than blubber. This indicates that the bioaccumulation of these chemicals is not simply related to lipid dynamics but may be linked to blood proteins. This study demonstrates that harbor seal pups from this region are contaminated with alternative flame retardants passed to them via placental or lactational transfer. Given the evidence for negative health effects of these chemicals, this contamination adds additional pressure on the first year survival of these young, developing animals.

Occurrence, spatial distribution, and risk assessment of brominated flame retardants in farmland soils of typical provinces in China

In the present study, we investigated the occurrence, distribution, and potential risks of 4 brominated flame retardants in farmland soils across 18 provinces of China. The total mean concentrations of the BFRs were in order as DBDPE > BDE209 > HBB > TBB. DBDPE concentration was highest at 177.208 ng/kg, revealing its long-term use and persistence across the study areas. In parts of China, DBDPE was highest in the south (Sichuan, Shaanxi and Guangdong provinces), BDE209 was highest in the south (Sichuan province) and north (Jilin province), while HBB was highest in the south (Sichuan province) and east (Anhui and Zhejiang provinces) of China. Comparisons of the results in this study to other reported studies in different regions indicated that the studied BFRs concentrations were higher in the studied provinces of China. Pearson correlation between BFRs revealed both positive and negative associations within the BFRs groups and between BFRs and soil properties (SOM, CEC, pH, EC and PS%). The mean hazard quotients (HQ) of ecological risks ranged from 8.76 × 10^-6 to 1.16 × 10^-2 (HQ < 1) while non-carcinogenic human health risk evaluation for adults ranged from 7.05 × 10^-7 - 7.48 × 10^-4 (HQ < 1) and for children 2.99 × 10^-4 - 4.30 × 10^-2 (HQ < 1). Although the risk evaluations of BFRs from farmland soils in this study were low, the results serve as useful indicators of potential cumulative and long-term threats of BFR to rural areas where there is a high conversion of agricultural lands to non-agricultural use.

Hepatocellular Metabolic Abnormalities Induced by Long-Term Exposure to Novel Brominated Flame Retardant, Hexabromobenzene

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are widely used to avoid environmental accumulation concerns and because of the regulations imposed on classical BFRs. However, recent studies have not revealed the negative effects of NBFR accumulation and exposure on humans. We conducted a metabolomics study on hexabromobenzene (HBB), one of the NBFRs, to investigate its effect on hepatocytes. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolite profiling was performed to observe metabolic perturbations by treating human livertissue-derived HepG2 cell lines with HBB for maximum 21 days. Metabolic pathway enrichment using 17 metabolite biomarkers determined via univariate and multivariate statistical analysis verified that long-term accumulation of HBB resulted in distinct diminution of eight amino acids and five other metabolites. Molecular docking of the biomarker-related enzymes revealed the potential molecular mechanism of hepatocellular response to HBB exposure, which disrupts the energy metabolism of hepatic cells. Collectively, this study may provide insights into the hidden toxicity of bioaccumulating HBB and unveil the risks associated with non-regulated NBFRs.

Coming ecological risks of organochlorine pesticides and novel brominated flame retardants in the Yellow River Basin

To conduct ecological risk assessment, food, water and soil samples were collected from five densely populated irrigation areas in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs). The results showed that the OCP residues (∑₁₄OCP were 0.748 ng L^-1, 13.1 ng g^-1 dw and 3.22 ng g^-1 dw in water, soil and maize) were generally within moderate levels in the YRB. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) residues dominated the OCPs, and potential ecological risks to aquatic and terrestrial organisms likely stemmed from dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) pollution in the upper reaches of the YRB in the Ningxia and Hetao Plain. The NBFR concentrations in the YRB were 90.9 pg L^-1 in water, 21.1 pg g^-1 dw in soil and 3.81 pg g^-1 dw in maize. Positive correlations were observed between soil and maize contamination in the five irrigated districts, indicating a potential threat to grain security and human health risks caused by OCPs and NBFRs. Pollutants detected in soil and maize primarily originated from historical use (36.3 %), while the sources in water were more complex (64.4 %) and new inputs could not be excluded. Integrated health risks of human exposure to agricultural products and water from the YRB were acceptable. However, the ecological risk of the Ningxia Plain would further deteriorate to the medium risk after 2032. The increasing ecological risk of DDT in water indicates that regular monitoring should strengthen to ensure grain and water safety in the YRB.

Gaseous- and Condensed-Phase Activities of Some Reactive P- and N-Containing Fire Retardants in Polystyrenes

Polystyrene (PS) was modified by covalently binding P-, P-N- and/or N- containing fire-retardant moieties through co- or ter-polymerization reactions of styrene with diethyl(acryloyloxymethyl)phosphonate (DEAMP), diethyl-p-vinylbenzyl phosphonate (DEpVBP), acrylic acid-2-[(diethoxyphosphoryl)methylamino]ethyl ester (ADEPMAE) and maleimide (MI). In the present study, the condensed-phase and the gaseous-phase activities of the abovementioned fire retardants within the prepared co- and ter-polymers were evaluated for the first time. Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry was employed to identify the volatile products formed during the thermal decomposition of the modified polymers. Benzaldehyde, α-methylstyrene, acetophenone, triethyl phosphate and styrene (monomer, dimer and trimer) were detected in the gaseous phase following the thermal cracking of fire-retardant groups and through main chain scissions. In the case of PS modified with ADEPMAE, the evolution of pyrolysis gases was suppressed by possible inhibitory actions of triethyl phosphate in the gaseous phase. The reactive modification of PS by simultaneously incorporating P- (DEAMP or DEpVBP) and N- (MI) monomeric units, in the chains of ter-polymers, resulted in a predominantly condensed-phase mode of action owing to synergistic P and N interactions. The solid-state ³¹P NMR spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Inductively-Coupled Plasma/Optical Emission Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy of char residues, obtained from ter-polymers, confirmed the retention of the phosphorus species in their structures.

Photolytic degradation of novel polymeric and monomeric brominated flame retardants: Investigation of endocrine disruption, physiological and ecotoxicological effects

Ecotoxicological effects of photolytic degradation mixtures of the two brominated flame retardants PolymericFR and Tetrabromobisphenol A-bis (2,3-dibrom-2-methyl-propyl) Ether (TBBPA-BDBMPE) have been studied in vitro and in vivo. Both substances were experimentally degraded separately by exposure to artificial UV-light and the resulting degradation mixtures from different time points during the UV-exposure were applied in ecotoxicological tests. The in vitro investigation showed no effects of the degraded flame retardants on the estrogenic and androgenic receptors via the CALUX (chemically activated luciferase gene expression) assay. Short-term exposures (up to 96 h) of Lumbriculus variegatus lead to temporary physiological reactions of the annelid. The exposure to degraded PolymericFR lead to an increased activity of Catalase, while the degradation mixture of TBBPA-BDBMPE caused increases of Glutathione-S-transferase and Acetylcholine esterase activities. Following a chronic exposure (28 d) of L. variegatus, no effects on the growth, reproduction, fragmentation and energy storage of the annelid were detected. The results indicate that the experimental degradation of the two flame retardants causes changes in their ecotoxicological potential. This might lead to acute physiological effects on aquatic annelids, which, however, do not affect the animals chronically according to our results.

Integration of transcriptomic and proteomic reveals the toxicological molecular mechanisms of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) on Pleurotus ostreatus

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), as one of the most widely used new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), can pose a potential threat to human health and the environment. An integrated transcriptome and proteome was performed for investigating the toxicological molecular mechanisms of Pleurotus ostreatus (P. ostreatus) during the biodegradation of DBDPE at the concentrations of 5 and 20 mg/L. A total of 1193/1018 and 92/126 differentially expressed genes/proteins (DEGs/DEPs) were found, respectively, with DBDPE exposure at 5 and 20 mg/L. These DEGs and DEPs were mainly involved in the cellular process as well as metabolic process. DEPs for oxidation-reduction process and hydrolase activity were up-regulated, and those for membrane, lipid metabolic process and transmembrane transport were down-regulated. The DEGs and DEPs related to some key enzymes were down-regulated, such as NADH dehydrogenase/oxidoreductase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome C1 protein, cytochrome-c oxidase/reductase and ATP synthase, which indicated that DBDPE affected the oxidative phosphorylation as well as tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) might be involved in DBDPE degradation through hydroxylation and oxidation. Some stress proteins were induced to resist DBDPE toxicity, including major facilitator superfamily (MFS) transporter, superoxide dismutase (SOD), molecular chaperones, heat shock proteins (HSP20, HSP26, HSP42), 60S ribosomal protein and histone H4. The findings help revealing the toxicological molecular mechanisms of DBDPE on P. ostreatus, aiming to improve the removal of DBDPE.

Catalytic degradation of brominated flame retardants in the environment: New techniques and research highlights

Due to the extensive commercial use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), human beings are chronically exposed to BFRs, causing great harms to human health, which imposes urgent demands to degrade them in the environment. Among various degradation techniques, catalytic degradation has been proven to be outstanding because of its rapidness and effectiveness. Therefore, much attention has been given to catalytic degradation, especially the extensively studied photocatalytic degradation and nanocatalytic reduction techniques. Recently, some novel advanced catalytic techniques have been developed and show excellent catalytic degradation efficiency for BFRs, including natural substances catalytic degradation, new Fenton catalytic degradation, new chemical reagent catalytic degradation, new material catalytic degradation, electrocatalytic degradation, plasma catalytic degradation, and composite catalytic degradation systems. In addition to the common features of traditional catalytic techniques, these novel techniques possess their own specific advantages in various aspects. Therefore, this review summarized the degradation mechanism of BFRs by the above new catalytic degradation methods under the laboratory conditions, simulated real environment, and real environment conditions, and further evaluated their advantages and disadvantages, aiming to provide some research ideas for the catalytic degradation of BFRs in the environment in the future. We suggested that more attention should focus on features of novel catalytic techniques, including eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and pragmatic usefulness.

Photodegradation Kinetics and Solvent Effect of New Brominated Flame Retardants (NBFRS) in Liquid Medium

The photolysis of four typical NBFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), pentabromobenzyl acrylateare (PBBA) and pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), were explored under different irradiation light wavelengths, initial concentrations and organic solvents. Density functional theory was used for chemical calculation to explore the internal mechanism of solvent effect. All degradation kinetics conformed to the first-order kinetic model. Under different irradiation light wavelengths, the degradation rates were in the following order: 180~400 nm (0.1702~0.3008 min^-1) > 334~365 nm (0.0265~0.0433 min^-1) > 400~700 nm (0.0058~0.0099 min^-1). When the initial concentration varied from 0.25 mg/L to 1 mg/L, the degradation rate decreased from 0.0379~0.0784 min^-1 to 0.0265~0.0433 min^-1 under 334~365 nm irradiation, which might be attributed to the reduction in light energy received per unit area and competition from intermediate metabolites. In different organic solvents, the degradation rates were in the order of acetone (0.1702~0.3008 min^-1) > toluene (0.0408~0.0534 min^-1) > n-hexane (0.0124~0.0299 min^-1). Quantum chemical calculation and analysis showed that the energy change in electron transfer between solvent and NBFRs was the key factor to solvent effect in the degradation of NBFRs. The active sites and degradation pathways of NBFRs were also speculated, the nucleophilic reaction of the Br atom on a benzene ring was the main process of photodegradation and it was preferential to remove the bromine and then the ethyl group on the benzene ring. Our research will be helpful in predicting and evaluating their photochemical behavior in different environment conditions.

Development of a Flame Retardant and an Organohalogen Flame Retardant Chemical Inventory

There have been many attempts to compile comprehensive lists of flame retardants. However, this goal has proven challenging due to the heterogeneity of compounds that can be used as flame retardants coupled with changes in formulation chemistry over time. Flame retardants have been the focus of many recent existing hazard, exposure, and risk assessments. These assessments have been class-based or for individual chemical substances. Here, diverse sets of publicly available data sources from governmental organizations and the open literature were compiled to develop an inventory of chemicals used as flame retardants and organohalogen flame retardants. The chemical substances from these data sources were mapped to appropriate chemical identifiers via manual curation and deduplicated. Despite different data sources containing a large number of overlapping chemical substances, compiling information from multiple data sources was found to increase the breadth of potential flame retardant chemistries. The flame retardant and organohalogen flame retardant inventories were developed as a resource for scientists interested in better understanding properties of flame retardant and organohalogen flame retardant classes.

Understanding the mechanism of polybrominated diphenyl ethers reducing the anaerobic co-digestion efficiency of excess sludge and kitchen waste

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) widely existing in the environment can pose a serious threat to the ecological safety. However, the influence of PBDEs on methane production by excess sludge (ES) and kitchen waste (KW) anaerobic co-digestion and its mechanism is not clear. To fill this gap, in this work, the co-digestion characteristics of ES and KW exposed to different levels of PBDEs at medium temperature were investigated in sequencing batch reactor, and the related mechanisms were also revealed. The results showed that PBDEs reduced methane production and the proportion of methane in the biogas. Methane yield decreased from 215.3 mL/g· volatile suspended solids (VSS) to 161.5 mL/(g·VSS), accompanied by the increase of PBDE content from 0 to 8.0 mg/Kg. Volatile fatty acid (VFA) yield was also inhibited by PBDEs; especially when PBDEs were 8.0 mg/Kg, VFA production was only 215.6 mg/g VSS, accounting for 75.7% of that in the control. Mechanism investigation revealed PBDEs significantly inhibited the processes of hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. Further study showed that PBDEs could inhibit the degradation and bioavailability of ES and KW, but it had a greater inhibition on the utilization of KW. Enzyme activity investigation revealed that all the key enzyme activities related to methane production were suppressed by PBDEs.

Hormetic dose responses induced by organic flame retardants in aquatic animals: Occurrence and quantification

The organic flame retardants (OFRs) have attracted global concerns due to their potential toxicity and ubiquitous presence in the aquatic environment. Hormesis refers to a biphasic dose response, characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. The present study provided substantial evidence for the widespread occurrence of OFRs-induced hormesis in aquatic animals, including 202 hormetic dose response relationships. The maximum stimulatory response (MAX) was commonly lower than 160% of the control response, with a combined value of 134%. Furthermore, the magnitude of MAX varied significantly among multiple factors and their interactions, such as chemical types and taxonomic groups. Moreover, the distance from the dose of MAX to the no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL) (NOAEL: MAX) was typically below 10-fold (median = 6-fold), while the width of the hormetic zone (from the lowest dose inducing hormesis to the NOAEL) was approximately 20-fold. Collectively, the quantitative features of OFRs-induced hormesis in aquatic animals were in accordance with the broader hormetic literature. In addition, the implications of hormetic dose response model for the risk assessment of OFRs were discussed. This study offered a novel insight for understanding the biological effects of low-to-high doses of OFRs on aquatic animals and assessing the potential risks of OFRs in the aquatic environment.

Microbial detoxification of 2,4,6-tribromophenol via a novel process with consecutive oxidative and hydrolytic debromination: Biochemical, genetic and evolutionary characterization

As a typical brominated flame retardants (BFRs), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) has serious hazard to the environmental health and its environmental fate has attracted considerable attention. Dehalogenation reaction plays key role in microbial TBP degradation and detoxification. So far, several halophenols-degrading enzymes have been reported to transform their substrate by oxidative dehalogenation; however, the molecular and biochemistry characterization of microbial hydrolytic dehalogenation is limited. In this study, Cupriavidus sp. CNP-8 with high TBP degradation activity was found to degrade TBP via an obviously differnet pathway as compared to other reported TBP-degraders. The transcription of hnp genes were significantly upregulated with TBP stimulation, indicating their involvment in TBP degradation. Enzymatic assays with ¹⁸O-labeling experiments showed that HnpAB, a two-component FAD-dependent monooxygenase, transformed TBP via consecutive oxidative and hydrolytic debromination reactions with the formation of 6-bromo-1,2,4-benzenetriol (BBT) as the ring-cleavage substrate. The function of the BBT ring-cleavage enzyme (HnpC) was also characterized both in vitro and in vivo. This finding provides new molecular mechanism of microbial detoxification of TBP and novel information of the environmental fate of this BFRs. Furthermore, to investigate the frequency of this novel dehalogenation mechanism in microbes, we also analyzed the distribution as well as the genetic structure of the hnpABC cluster by comparative genomics. Although hnpA homolog is distributed in several bacterial genera including Cupriavidus, Paraburkholderia, Variovorax and Streptomyces, the complete hnpABC cluster is only retrieved from Cupriavidus and strictly conservative in the genomes. This indicated that Cupriavidus have unique evolutionary pattern in acquiring the hnpABC to degrade TBP and its analogs, enhancing our understanding of the microbial adaptive evolution in halophenols-contaminated environment.

A review on environmental occurrence, toxic effects and transformation of man-made bromophenols

Brominated phenols (BPs) of anthropogenic origin are aromatic substances widely used in the industry as flame retardants (FRs) and pesticides as well as the components of FRs and polymers. In this review, we have focused on describing 2,4-dibromophenol (2,4-DBP), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP) and pentabromophenol (PBP), which are the most commonly used in the industry and are the most often detected in the air, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the human body. This review describes human-related sources of these BPs that influence their occurrence in the environment (atmosphere, surface water, sediment, soil, biota), indoor air and dust, food, drinking water and the human organism. Data from in vitro and in vivo studies showing 2,4-DBP, 2,4,6-TBP and PBP toxicity, including their estrogenic activity, effects on development and reproduction, perturbations of cellular redox balance and cytotoxic action have been described. Moreover, the processes of BPs transformation that occur in human and other mammals, plants and bacteria have been discussed. Finally, the effect of abiotic factors (e.g. UV irradiation and temperature) on BPs conversion to highly toxic brominated dioxins and brominated furans as well as polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers has been presented.

Novel Brominated Flame Retardants (NBFRs) in a Tropical Marine Food Web from the South China Sea: The Influence of Hydrophobicity and Biotransformation on Structure-Related Trophodynamics

The increasing discharge and ubiquitous occurrence of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments have initiated intense global concerns; however, little information is available regarding their structure-related trophodynamics in marine food webs. In this study, a tropical marine food web including 29 species (18 fish and 11 invertebrate species) was collected from coral reef waters of the Xisha Islands, the South China Sea, for an analysis of 11 representative NBFRs. The mean ∑NBFR concentrations generally increased in the following sequence: sea cucumbers (0.330 ng/g lw) < crabs (0.380 ng/g lw) < shells (2.10 ng/g lw) < herbivorous fishes (2.30 ng/g lw) < carnivorous fishes (4.13 ng/g lw), with decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and hexabromobenzene (HBB) as the predominant components. Trophic magnification was observed for all of the investigated NBFRs, with trophic magnification factors (TMFs) ranging from 1.53 (tetrabromobisphenol A bis(dibromopropyl ether)) to 5.32 (HBB). Significant negative correlations were also found between the TMFs and the tested in vitro transformation clearance rates (CL_in vitro) for the target NBFRs except for bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-phthalate (TBPH) (p < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis confirmed that the transformation rate is a more powerful predictor for TMFs than the hydrophobicity of NBFRs in this marine food web.

Integrated assessment of endocrine disrupting potential of four novel brominated flame retardants

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have emerged as alternatives to the legacy BFRs due to BFRs' persistence, bioaccumulation and evidence of adverse health effects. The increasing production of NBFRs has led to the frequent detection in environmental media and even in organisms. Thus the potential health risks of these novel NBFRs need to be taken into account. Herein, the endocrine disrupting effects of the four NBFRs (α/β-TBCO, PBEB, EHTBB and BEHTBP) were evaluated by constructing an estrogen receptor (ERα), glucocorticoid receptor (GR), and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) mediated dual-luciferase reporter gene assays on the CHO cells, in combination with steroid experiments on the H295R cells and molecular docking. The results revealed that α/β-TBCO, PBEB and EHTBB induced anti-estrogenic activity at certain concentrations while none of the four NBFRs was agonistic to ERα. For reporter gene assay, only PBEB exhibited GR antagonistic effects. Notably, none of the four NBFRs possess neither agonistic nor antagonistic activity of MR. The molecular docking results were generally consistent with the reporter gene assay, which showed the different binding affinities between NBFRs and the receptors. For steroidogenesis, α/β-TBCO, PBEB, and EHTBB all upregulated genes encoding for steroid synthesis enzymes, including 17βHSD, CYP11B1 and CYP17. Altogether, the data clarified that NBFRs may pose risks of endocrine disruption.

Metabolic transformation of environmentally-relevant brominated flame retardants in Fauna: A review

Over the past few decades, production trends of the flame retardant (FR) industry, and specifically for brominated FRs (BFRs), is for the replacement of banned and regulated compounds with more highly brominated, higher molecular weight compounds including oligomeric and polymeric compounds. Chemical, biological, and environmental stability of BFRs has received some attention over the years but knowledge is currently lacking in the transformation potential and metabolism of replacement emerging or novel BFRs (E/NBFRs). For articles published since 2015, a systematic search strategy reviewed the existing literature on the direct (e.g., in vitro or in vivo) non-human BFR metabolism in fauna (animals). Of the 51 papers reviewed, and of the 75 known environmental BFRs, PBDEs were by far the most widely studied, followed by HBCDDs and TBBPA. Experimental protocols between studies showed large disparities in exposure or incubation times, age, sex, depuration periods, and of the absence of active controls used in in vitro experiments. Species selection emphasized non-standard test animals and/or field-collected animals making comparisons difficult. For in vitro studies, confounding variables were generally not taken into consideration (e.g., season and time of day of collection, pollution point-sources or human settlements). As of 2021 there remains essentially no information on the fate and metabolic pathways or kinetics for 30 of the 75 environmentally relevant E/BFRs. Regardless, there are clear species-specific and BFR-specific differences in metabolism and metabolite formation (e.g. BDE congeners and HBCDD isomers). Future in vitro and in vivo metabolism/biotransformation research on E/NBFRs is required to better understand their bioaccumulation and fate in exposed organisms. Also, studies should be conducted on well characterized lab (e.g., laboratory rodents, zebrafish) and commonly collected wildlife species used as captive models (crucian carp, Japanese quail, zebra finches and polar bears).

Emerging and legacy flame retardants in indoor air and dust samples of Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain)

Flame retardants (FRs) are widely used in consumer products including furniture foam and electronic equipment such as computers, monitors and TVs. Over time, FRs can easily migrate into the surrounding environments. Since brominated FRs (BFRs) has been determined of high concern due to their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and potential toxicity, novel FRs have emerged. The present study was aimed at identifying and quantifying the indoor levels of 41 legacy and novel FRs, which include 20 OPFRs and 21 HFRs (8 PBDEs, 3 HBCDDs, 5 NBFRs and 5 DECs) in Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain). The results have confirmed the presence of both legacy and novel FRs in air and dust of homes, schools and offices. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first European study measuring OPFRs at office environments and also confirming the presence of the following OPFRs: TEP, TCIPP, T2IPPP, TPPO, DCP, TMCP and B4IPPPP in indoor air, even some of them at high levels. OPFRs in general and TCIPP in particular showed high concentrations in air (94,599 pg/m³ and 72,281 pg/m³, respectively) and dust (32,084 ng/g and 13,496 ng/g, respectively) samples collected in indoor environments. HBCDDs were found at high levels in dust (32,185 ng/g), whereas the presence of PBDEs and DECs were low in both matrices (<160 pg/m³ in air and <832 ng/g in dust). NBFRs showed higher levels than the two legacy FRs groups, which is supported by the current restrictions of these FRs (640 pg/m³ in air and 1291 ng/g in dust). Samples of schools had significantly lower levels of NBFRs, but significantly higher concentrations of HFRs in air than in home samples, while dust levels of HFRs were significantly lower than those in samples of offices. Regarding human health risks, the current assessment suggests that those derived from exposure to FRs were lower -although close- to assumable risks, evidencing the potential of FRs for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, mainly due to the exposure to TCIPP, which was the main contributor together with ΣHBCDDs and also EHDPP.

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in soil and moss in Mt. Shergyla, southeast Tibetan Plateau: Occurrence, distribution and influencing factors

Research on the environmental fate and behavior of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) remains limited, especially in the remote alpine regions. In this study, the concentrations and distributions of NBFRs were investigated in soils and mosses collected from two slopes of Shergyla in the southeast of the Tibetan Plateau (TP), to unravel the environmental behaviors of NBFRs in this background area. The total NBFR concentrations (∑₇NBFRs) ranged from 34.2 to 879 pg/g dw in soil and from 72.8 to 2505 pg/g dw in moss. ∑₇NBFRs in soil samples collected in 2019 were significantly higher than those in 2012 (p < 0.05). Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the predominant NBFR, accounting for 90% of ∑₇NBFRs on average. The ratio of the concentrations in moss and soil showed significantly positive correlations with LogK_OA except for DBDPE (p < 0.05), indicating that the role of mosses as accumulators compared to soils are more pronounced for more volatile NBFRs. In addition, the concentrations of NBFRs generally decreased with increasing altitude on the south-facing slope, whereas on the north-facing slope some NBFRs exhibited different trends, suggesting concurrent local and long-range transport sources. Normalization based on total organic carbon/lipid concentrations strengthened the correlation with altitude, implying that the altitude gradient of the mountain slope and forest cover could jointly affect the distribution of NBFRs in the TP. Furthermore, principal components analysis (PCA) with multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) showed that the average contribution of the mountain cold trapping effect (MCTE) accounted for the major (77%) contribution and forest filter effect (FFE) has only a modest contribution to the deposition of NBFRs in soil.

Brominated flame retardant TBPH induced oxidative damage and reduced the expression of memory-related proteins in mice, with no discernable impairment of learning and memory

Bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH) is one of the new brominated flame retardants with adverse neurobehavioral potential. These flame retardants are often added to household furnishings where children would come into contact with them. This study explores whether oral exposure to TBPH for 28 days would impair neurobehavioral function in mice and the role of curcumin (CUR) in this process. CUR is a natural antioxidant and is thought to be of use in the treatment of neurological toxicity due to its neuroprotective effects. Learning and memory of mice exposed to TBPH was investigated using the Morris water maze. Levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) were determined to assess oxidative damage. Western blot was used to detect the expression of glucose-regulated protein 78-kDa (GRP78), PKR-like ER kinase (PERK), and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) in the hippocampus. End-point effects were evaluated through observing post-synaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and phosphorylated cAMP response element binding protein (p-CREB). Although TBPH exposure alone does not impair learning and memory, oxidative stress markers and endoplasmic reticulum stress-associated proteins were adversely affected in exposed mice. TBPH could significantly decrease the levels of BDNF, p-CREB, and PSD-95 in the hippocampus, and these TBPH-induced neurotoxic effects were attenuated by CUR. These findings provide further understanding of the neurotoxic effects of TBPH and the protective effect of CUR on TBPH exposure.

Modeling of Flame Retardants in Typical Urban Indoor Environments in China during 2010-2030: Influence of Policy and Decoration and Implications for Human Exposure

Novel flame retardants (FRs) are of increasing concern, given growing evidence of health effects and use to replace polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). This study modeled combined effects of use policies and decoration on indoor FRs and human exposure for 18 widely used PBDEs, organophosphate esters (OPEs), and novel brominated flame retardants in typical urban indoor environments in China. The current estimated indoor emission rates and average concentrations in air and dust of the 18 FRs were 10²-10³ ng/h, 561 ng/m³, and 1.5 × 10⁴ ng/g, respectively, with seven OPEs dominant (>69%). Different use patterns exist between China and the US and Europe. Scenarios modeled over 2010-2030 suggested that decoration would affect indoor concentrations of FRs more than use policies, and use policies were mainly responsible for shifts of FR composition. Additional use of hexabromobenzene and 2,3,4,5,6-pentabromotoluene and removal of BDE-209 would make the total human exposure to the modeled FR mixture increase after the restriction of penta- and octa-BDE but decrease after deca-BDE was banned. Better knowledge of the toxicity of substitutes is needed for a complete understanding of the health implications of such changes. Toddlers may be more affected by use changes than adults. Such studies are supportive to the management of FR use.

Spatio-temporal variations and input patterns on the legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in coastal rivers of North China

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) has been subject to restrictions since 2018 in developed countries but is still manufacturing in China. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is widely used as a replacement for BDE209. To better understand the behaviors and fates of these legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs), water samples were collected from the estuaries of 36 rivers that drain into the Bohai Sea (BS) and North Yellow Sea (NYS) in 2017 and 2018. The results showed that BDE209 was still the predominant compound with a median concentration of 2470 pg L^-1, whereas DBDPE had a median concentration of 129 pg L^-1. Spatially, relatively high concentrations were observed in the rivers near Laizhou Bay (LB), which is the manufacturing hub of BFRs. BDE209 concentrations were significantly higher in dry season than in wet season, which indicates a dominant process of dilution by precipitation during the wet season. DBDPE concentration showed no significant seasonal difference. This implies that wet deposition was the major additional source of DBDPE during the wet season, and the concentration increased further during the autumn as a result of a time-lag effect. The BFR concentrations in urban rivers were lower than those reported by a study undertaken in August 2013. An increase in the BFR concentrations in rural rivers since 2013 suggested increases in the use and non-point source emissions of BFRs in some remote aquatic environments. The estimated annual inputs of BDE209 and DBDPE into the BS were ∼95.9 kg yr^-1 and ∼26.8 kg yr^-1, respectively, whereas those into the NYS were ∼24.1 kg yr^-1 and ∼8.38 kg yr^-1. The results revealed an ecological risk of BDE209 in winter especially in the Xiaoqing River, thus suggesting the impact of BDE209 on the aquatic environment and human health.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments - A critical review

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), which have been developed as replacements for legacy flame retardants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), are a class of alternative flame retardants with emerging and widespread applications. The ubiquitous occurrence of NBFRs in the aquatic environments and the potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms have initiated intense global concerns. The present article, therefore, identifies and analyzes the current state of knowledge on the occurrence, bioaccumulation, fates, and environmental and health risks of NBFRs in aquatic environments. The key findings from this review are that (1) the distribution of NBFRs are source-dependent in the global aquatic environments, and several NBFRs have been reported at higher concentrations than that of the legacy flame retardants; (2) high bioaccumulative properties have been found for all of the discussed NBFRs due to their strong hydrophobic characteristics and weak metabolic rates; (3) the limited information available suggests that NBFRs are resistant to biotic and abiotic degradation processes and that sorption to sludge and sediments are the main fate of NBFRs in the aquatic environments; (4) the results of ecological risk assessments have indicated the potential risks of NBFRs and have suggested that source areas are the most vulnerable environmental compartments. Knowledge gaps and perspectives for future research regarding the monitoring, toxicokinetics, transformation processes, and development of ecological risk assessments of NBFRs in aquatic environments are proposed.

Insights into the Occurrence, Fate, and Impacts of Halogenated Flame Retardants in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) have been extensively used in various consumer products and many are classified as persistent organic pollutants due to their resistance to degradation, bioaccumulation potential and toxicity. HFRs have been widely detected in the municipal wastewater and wastewater treatment solids in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the discharge and agricultural application of which represent a primary source of environmental HFRs contamination. This review seeks to provide a current overview on the occurrence, fate, and impacts of HFRs in WWTPs around the globe. We first summarize studies recording the occurrence of representative HFRs in wastewater and wastewater treatment solids, revealing temporal and geographical trends in HFRs distribution. Then, the efficiency and mechanism of HFRs removal by biosorption, which is known to be the primary process for HFRs removal from wastewater, during biological wastewater treatment processes, are discussed. Transformation of HFRs via abiotic and biotic processes in laboratory tests and full-scale WWTPs is reviewed with particular emphasis on the transformation pathways and functional microorganisms responsible for HFRs biotransformation. Finally, the potential impacts of HFRs on reactor performance (i.e., nitrogen removal and methanogenesis) and microbiome in bioreactors are discussed. This review aims to advance our understanding of the fate and impacts of HFRs in WWTPs and shed light on important questions warranting further investigation.

Accumulation and influencing factors of novel brominated flame retardants in soil and vegetation from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica

The concentrations and distributions of nine novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were analyzed in soil, lichen (Usnea aurantiaco-atra), and moss (Sanionia uncinata) samples collected from the Chinese Antarctic Great Wall Station and surrounding Fildes Peninsula area in west Antarctica. Total NBFR concentrations ranged from 61.2-225 pg/g dry weight (dw) in soil, 283-1065 pg/g dw in moss, and 135-401 pg/g dw in lichen, respectively. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) was the dominant NBFR in all samples, accounting for 65.2%, 50.1%, and 72.4% of cumulative NBFR concentration in soil, moss, and lichen, respectively. The concentrations of NBFRs in plant samples were higher than those in soil, which may be related to plant bioaccumulation. Significant log/log-linear correlations (p < 0.05) were found between the concentrations of BEHTEBP and total organic carbon (TOC) in soil, and between DBDPE and lipid content in mosses, indicating that TOC and lipid content potentially affect certain NBFRs in Antarctic soil and moss. This study presents the first report on NBFR contamination in soil and various vegetation in Antarctica.

Bioconcentration and developmental neurotoxicity of novel brominated flame retardants, hexabromobenzene and pentabromobenzene in zebrafish

The flame retardants hexabromobenzene (HBB) and pentabromobenzene (PBB) have been extensively used and become ubiquitous pollutants in the aquatic environment and biota, but their potential toxic effects on wildlife remained unknown. In this study, by using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model, the bioconcentration and developmental neurotoxicity were investigated. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to HBB and PBB (0, 30, 100 and 300 μg/L) from 2 until 144 h post-fertilization (hpf). Chemical analysis showed bioconcentrations of both chemicals, while HBB is readily metabolized to PBB in zebrafish larvae. Embryonic exposure to both chemicals did not cause developmental toxicity, but induced locomotor behavioral anomalies in larvae. Molecular docking results indicated that both chemicals could bind to zebrafish acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Furthermore, HBB and PBB significantly inhibited AChE activities, accompanied by increased contents of acetylcholine and decreased choline in larvae. Downregulation of the genes associated with central nervous system (CNS) development (e.g., mbp, α1-tubulin, gfap, shha) as well as the corresponding proteins (e.g., Mbp, α1-Tubulin) was observed, but gap-43 was upregulated at both gene and protein levels. Together, our results indicate that both HBB and PBB exhibit developmental neurotoxicity by affecting various parameters related to CNS development and indications for future toxicological research and risk assessment of the novel brominated flame retardants.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in Western Australian biosolids and implications for land application

This study evaluates the prevalence of eight priority polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs; -28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183 and -209) and six novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs; pentabromotoluene (PBT), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), hexabromobenzene (HBB), 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE)) in biosolids samples from 15 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Western Australia. Analytes were extracted using selective pressurized liquid extraction (S-PLE) and quantified by gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) operated in electron impact (EI) ionization mode. ∑₈PBDE levels in biosolids ranged from 11 to 18,000 μg/kg dw with a median concentration of 1800 μg/kg dw. BDE-209 was the most prevalent congener constituting a median of 98% of ∑₈PBDE concentrations in samples with BDE-99, -47 and -100 each typically contributing less than 3% to total levels. NBFRs were detected in 71% of samples with ∑₆NBFR levels ranging between ND-1100 μg/kg dw (median; 600 μg/kg dw). Levels of DBDPE greatly exceeded those of all other NBFRs, while the next most prevalent compounds were EH-TBB and HBB. Australia produced approximately 327,000 dry tonnes of biosolids in 2017, of which approximately 75% was beneficially utilized on farmland as a fertilizer. Based on these results, an estimated 440 kg of BDE-209 and 150 kg of DBDPE are applied to agricultural land via biosolids applications annually in Australia. This study provides the first account of NBFR concentrations in Australian biosolids.

Photodegradation of 1,3,5-Tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-trione and decabromodiphenyl ethane flame retardants: Kinetics, Main products, and environmental implications

Photodegradation has been demonstrated as one of the important environmental factors affecting the fate of contaminants such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs). However, a number of emerging BFRs, particularly those with high bromine substitution, have rarely been investigated for their photodegradation kinetics. Our study evaluated photodegradation of two highly brominated FRs, 1,3,5-tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-trione (TDBP-TAZTO) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), under various conditions. The results indicated that the degradation kinetics was affected by UV irradiation wavelength, intensity, solvent type, as well as the structural characteristics. TDBP-TAZTO exhibited degradation half-lives (t_1/2) of 23.5-6931 min under various UV irradiation conditions and 91.2 days under natural sunlight. Its degradation was much slower than that of DBDPE which exhibited t_1/2 of 0.8-101.9 min under UV and 41.3 min under natural sunlight. A variety of degradation products were detected as a result of different breakdown pathways. This indicated that photodegradation could substantially influence the fate of these highly brominated FRs, resulting in a cocktail of degradation products as environmentally occurring contaminants. This could also complicate the evaluation of the ecological risks of these target flame retardants, given that degradation products generally possess physicochemical properties and biological effects different from their parent chemicals.

Legacy and novel flame retardants in water and sediment from highly industrialized bays of Korea: Occurrence, source tracking, decadal time trend, and ecological risks

Legacy and novel flame retardants (FRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel BFRs, and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were measured in water and sediment collected from highly industrialized bays of Korea. Predominant compounds in sediment were BDE 209, DBDPE, and BTBPE for BFRs, and TCPP and TBOEP for OPFRs, respectively. Higher alternative FR concentrations were observed compared to those reported for previous studies. The highest BFR concentrations were found in locations close to industrial complexes, while the OPFR concentrations were highest in locations close to domestic regions and a wastewater treatment plant. Different contamination sources were observed for BFRs and OPFRs. The ratio of DBDPE/BDE 209 in sediment ranged from 0.84 to 28, indicating a shift in consumption of BFRs. A significant decline in PBDEs suggests the effectiveness of domestic and global regulations. Despite this, sedimentary PBDE concentrations may pose adverse health risks to benthic organisms and humans.

Use of integrated biomarker response for evaluating antioxidant stress and DNA damage of earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in decabromodiphenyl ethane-contaminated soil

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is a new and popular type of brominated flame retardant (BFR) with high bromine content, strong thermal stability, and ultraviolet resistance. To evaluated the potential toxicity of this new BFR to soil ecosystem, different concentrations of DBDPE were used to observe effects on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in artificial soil. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents, activities of antioxidase system and detoxify enzyme, levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as DNA damage in earthworms were measured after exposure to 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg DBDPE in artificial soil for 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. The results showed that ROS and MDA content significantly increased for all treatments from days 7-21, followed by a decrease. Throughout the experimental period, SOD, POD, and CAT activities increased. The GST activity was stimulated significantly from days 14-28. Besides, the olive tail moment (OTM) value in all treated groups was significantly higher than that in the control and exhibited a concentration-related and exposure time-related response. This is the first study evaluating the biological toxicity of BFR at different concentrations using an integrated biomarker response index. Our results show that DBDPE has biochemical toxicity on earthworms, which sheds some light on the potential risks of DBDPE in the soil environment and provides a basis for the monitoring and diagnosis of soils contaminated with DBDPE.

Novel brominated flame retardants - A review of their occurrence in indoor air, dust, consumer goods and food

This critical review summarizes the occurrence of 63 novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in indoor air, dust, consumer goods and food. It includes their EU registration and (potential) risks. The increasing application of NBFRs calls for more research on their occurrence, environmental fate and toxicity. This review reports which NBFRs are actually being studied, which are detected and which are of most concern. It also connects data from the European Chemical Association on NBFRs with other scientific information. Large knowledge gaps emerged for 28 (out of 63) NBFRs, which were not included in any monitoring programs or other studies. This also indicates the need for optimized analytical methods including all NBFRs. Further research on indoor environments, emission sources and potential leaching is also necessary. High concentrations of 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB), bis(2-ethylhexyl)tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) were often reported. The detection of hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), 1,4-dimethyltetrabromobenzene (TBX), 4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)-1,2-dibromocyclohexane (DBE-DBCH) and tetrabromobisphenol A bis(2,3-dibromopropyl) ether (TBBPA-BDBPE) also raises concern.

Global occurrence, chemical properties, and ecological impacts of e-wastes (IUPAC Technical Report)

The waste stream of obsolete electronic equipment grows exponentially, creating a worldwide pollution and resource problem. Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) comprises a heterogeneous mix of glass, plastics (including flame retardants and other additives), metals (including rare Earth elements), and metalloids. The e-waste issue is complex and multi-faceted. In examining the different aspects of e-waste, informal recycling in developing countries has been identified as a primary concern, due to widespread illegal shipments; weak environmental, as well as health and safety, regulations; lack of technology; and inadequate waste treatment structure. For example, Nigeria, Ghana, India, Pakistan, and China have all been identified as hotspots for the disposal of e-waste. This article presents a critical examination on the chemical nature of e-waste and the resulting environmental impacts on, for example, microbial biodiversity, flora, and fauna in e-waste recycling sites around the world. It highlights the different types of risk assessment approaches required when evaluating the ecological impact of e-waste. Additionally, it presents examples of chemistry playing a role in potential solutions. The information presented here will be informative to relevant stakeholders seeking to devise integrated management strategies to tackle this global environmental concern.

Reactive and Additive Modifications of Styrenic Polymers with Phosphorus-Containing Compounds and Their Effects on Fire Retardance

Polystyrene, despite its high flammability, is widely used as a thermal insulation material for buildings, for food packaging, in electrical and automotive industries, etc. A number of modification routes have been explored to improve the fire retardance and boost the thermal stability of commercially important styrene-based polymeric products. The earlier strategies mostly involved the use of halogenated fire retardants. Nowadays, these compounds are considered to be persistent pollutants that are hazardous to public and environmental health. Many well-known halogen-based fire retardants, regardless of their chemical structures and modes of action, have been withdrawn from built environments in the European Union, USA, and Canada. This had triggered a growing research interest in, and an industrial demand for, halogen-free alternatives, which not only will reduce the flammability but also address toxicity and bioaccumulation issues. Among the possible options, phosphorus-containing compounds have received greater attention due to their excellent fire-retarding efficiencies and environmentally friendly attributes. Numerous reports were also published on reactive and additive modifications of polystyrene in different forms, particularly in the last decade; hence, the current article aims to provide a critical review of these publications. The authors mainly intend to focus on the chemistries of phosphorous compounds, with the P atom being in different chemical environments, used either as reactive, or additive, fire retardants in styrene-based materials. The chemical pathways and possible mechanisms behind the fire retardance are discussed in this review.

Adélie penguin colonies as indicators of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in East Antarctica

While persistent organic pollutant (POP) contamination within Antarctica is largely caused by long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT), Antarctic research bases have been shown to be local sources of POPs such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs). This study compared concentrations of seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) congeners and five novel flame retardants (NBFRs) found in Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) colony soils near the Australian research stations, Mawson and Davis, to assess the stations as local sources of these contaminants and provide a much needed baseline for contamination of BFRs in East Antarctica. Soil samples (n = 46) were collected from Adélie colonies at close proximity to the research stations as well as further afield during the 2016-17 austral summer. Samples were analysed using selective pressurised liquid extraction (S-PLE) and gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154 and -183) were detected in 45/46 samples with ∑₇PBDE concentrations ranging from <0.01 to 1.63 ng/g dry weight (dw) and NBFRs (2,3,4,5,6-pentabromotoluene (PBT), 2,3,4,5,6-pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), hexabromobenzene (HBB), 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB) and bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE)) detected in 20/46 samples, with a range of ∑₅NBFR from not detected (ND) to 0.16 ng/g dw. Soils taken from around the Davis and Mawson research stations were more highly contaminated (n = 10) than penguin colonies (n = 27) and control areas not affiliated with breeding seabirds (n = 8). The most common congener detected was BDE-99, reflecting inputs from LRAT. However, the congener profiles of station soils supported the hypothesis that research stations are a local source of PBDEs to the Antarctic environment. In addition, the NBFR pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) was quantified for the first time in Antarctic soils, providing essential information for baseline contamination within the region and highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring as global regulations for the use of BFRs continuously change.
