Review of 'emerging' organic contaminants in biosolids and assessment of international research priorities for the agricultural use of biosolids

Scientometric trends and knowledge maps of global polychlorinated naphthalenes research over the past four decades

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) were included in the banned list of the Stockholm Convention due to their potential to provoke a wide range of adverse effects on living organisms and the environment. Many reviews have been written to clarify the state of knowledge and identify the research needs of this pollutant class. However, studies have yet to analyse the scientometric complexities of PCN literature. In this study, we used bibliometric R and vosviewer programs as a scientometric tool to fill this gap by focusing on articles indexed on Web of Science and Scopus databases and those published between 1973 and 2022. A total of 707 articles were published within this period with a publication/author, author/publication, and co-authors/publication ratios of 0.45, 2.19, and 4.86, respectively. Developed countries dominated most scientometric indices (number of publications, citations, and collaboration networks) in the survey period. Lotka's inverse square rule of author productivity showed that Lotka's laws do not fit PCN literature. An annual percentage growth rate of 7.46% and a Kolmogorov-Smirnoff goodness-of-fit of 0.88 suggests that more output on PCNs is likely in years to come. More research is needed from scholars from developing countries to measure the supremacy of the developed nations and to effectively comply with the Stockholm Convention agreement.

Season and side-chain length affect the occurrences and behaviors of phthalic acid esters in wastewater treatment plants

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are prevalent in aquatic environments globally. Researchers strive to understand their occurrence and behavior prior to their release into the environment. In this study, we examined five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), collected 50 wastewater samples and 10 sludge samples. We explored the sources and destinations of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) within these WWTPs using mass balance equations. Wastewater treatment diminished the frequency and concentration of PAEs, and decreased the fraction of short-chain PAEs. We confirmed the increased concentration of PAEs post-primary treatment and modified the mass balance equation. Calculations suggest that weaker "the mix" in winter than in summer and stronger sedimentation in winter than in summer resulted in high efficiency of PAEs removal by winter wastewater treatment. The mass flux of biodegradation was influenced by the combination of biodegradation efficiency and the strength of the particular type of PAEs collected, with no seasonal differences. Mass fluxes for sludge sedimentation were mainly influenced by season and were higher in winter than in summer. This study enhances our understanding of emerging pollutants in manual treatment facilities and offers insights for optimizing wastewater treatment methods for water professionals.

Vermistabilization of excess sludge employing Eisenia fetida: Earthworm histopathological alterations and phytotoxicity evaluation

The aim of this work was to stabilize excess sludge (ES) coming from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) by vermistabilization and to evaluate ecotoxicological effects over the earthworm species Eisenia fetida. Three mixtures were made up in triplicate using different volume ratios of ES and soil (S) (100% ES, 70:30% ES:S and 30:70% ES:S in wet weight basis). Earthworms were added in order to compare vermicomposting vs. natural stabilization. The mixtures were monitored over 130 days through physical, chemical, pathological and biological analysis, following quality standards depicted in the US EPA 40 CFR Part 503, local regulations and background studies. Histopathological samples were processed as biomarkers of acute and chronic toxicity on earthworms, and germination assays were performed at the end of the experiment to assess phytotoxicity. In terms of pathogen depletion comparing initial and final values from each treatment, the mixtures with higher ES proportions (70 and 100%) with earthworms were the most efficient ones registering 64.8 and 75.5% of reduction of fecal coliforms (FC) respectively, while the lowest ES proportion with earthworms (30%) showed 54.7%. Final pathogens content in all the treatments with earthworms were significantly lower (ranged from 1360 to 1760 MPN g total solids-1) than the values registered in treatments without earthworms (ranged from 2400 to 4000 MPN g total solids-1) (p < 0.05). However, none of the treatments attained class A categorization (FC ≤ 1000 MPN g total solids-1) in terms of FC. Also, values of mean cocoon production and hatched juveniles along time were significantly higher in the treatments with 100 and 70% ES (p < 0.05), while the higher mean adult biomass was detected in the treatment with 30% ES. Volatile solids decrease ranged between 8.45 and 22.34% in treatments with earthworms and all values of specific oxygen uptake rate were below 1.5 mg O2 h -1 g total solids -1. There were not negative effects over behavior or reproduction of E. fetida adults, nor the presence of external and internal injuries. Final products from mixtures with earthworms presented a humus-like structure, were odorless and reached maturity values -presenting no phytotoxicity-with significant differences between germination index values of treatments with and without earthworms (p < 0.05). Vermistabilization is a successful eco-technology to sanitize excess sludge, acquiring an added-value material and contributing to its revalorization as organic amendments or fertilizers in soils within the circular economy framework and the United Nations' Sustainability Development Goals.

Toxic metals in rice among Asian countries: A review of occurrence and potential human health risks

Heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) pose significant health risks, particularly in Asia, where rice is a staple for nearly three billion people. Despite their known dangers and environmental prevalence, studies addressing their concentrations in rice across different regions and the associated health implications remain insufficient. This review systematically examines the occurrence and impact of these toxic elements, filling a critical gap in the literature. Data from seven countries indicate mean concentrations in the order of Pb > As>Cd, with values of 0.255 ± 0.013, 0.236 ± 0.317, and 0.136 ± 0.150 mg/kg, respectively. Uncertainty analysis shows extensive variability, especially for Cd, with a 95% confidence interval range from 0.220 to 0.992 mg/kg. The typical daily intake of heavy metals through rice consumption, in the order of As>Cd > Pb, frequently exceeds safe limits. Generally, data obtained from various studies showed that children were more prone to heavy metal contamination through rice consumption than adults. This review is fundamental for ongoing monitoring, future research, and management strategies to reduce heavy metal contamination in rice.

Biochar from Co-Pyrolyzed Municipal Sewage Sludge (MSS): Part 1: Evaluating Types of Co-Substrates and Co-Pyrolysis Conditions

With the increasing production of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) worldwide, the development of efficient and sustainable strategies for its management is crucial. Pyrolysis of MSS offers several benefits, including volume reduction, pathogen elimination, and energy recovery through the production of biochar, syngas, and bio-oil. However, the process can be limited by the composition of the MSS, which can affect the quality of the biochar. Co-pyrolysis has emerged as a promising solution for the sustainable management of MSS, reducing the toxicity of biochar and improving its physical and chemical properties to expand its potential applications. This review discusses the status of MSS as a feedstock for biochar production. It describes the types and properties of various co-substrates grouped according to European biochar certification requirements, including those from forestry and wood processing, agriculture, food processing residues, recycling, anaerobic digestion, and other sources. In addition, the review addresses the optimization of co-pyrolysis conditions, including the type of furnace, mixing ratio of MSS and co-substrate, co-pyrolysis temperature, residence time, heating rate, type of inert gas, and flow rate. This overview shows the potential of different biomass types for the upgrading of MSS biochar and provides a basis for research into new co-substrates. This approach not only mitigates the environmental impact of MSS but also contributes to the wider goal of achieving a circular economy in MSS management.

Combining Nontargeted Analysis with Computer-Based Hazard Comparison Approaches to Support Prioritization of Unregulated Organic Contaminants in Biosolids

Biosolids are a byproduct of wastewater treatment that can be beneficially applied to agricultural land as a fertilizer. While U.S. regulations limit metals and pathogens in biosolids intended for land applications, no organic contaminants are currently regulated. Novel techniques can aid in detection, evaluation, and prioritization of biosolid-associated organic contaminants (BOCs). For example, nontargeted analysis (NTA) can detect a broad range of chemicals, producing data sets representing thousands of measured analytes that can be combined with computational toxicological tools to support human and ecological hazard assessment and prioritization. We combined NTA with a computer-based tool from the U.S. EPA, the Cheminformatics Hazard Comparison Module (HCM), to identify and prioritize BOCs present in U.S. and Canadian biosolids (n = 16). Four-hundred fifty-one features were detected in at least 80% of samples, with identities of 92 compounds confirmed or assigned probable structures. These compounds were primarily categorized as endogenous compounds, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and fragrances. Examples of top prioritized compounds were p-cresol and chlorophene, based on human health end points, and fludioxonil and triclocarban, based on ecological health end points. Combining NTA results with hazard comparison data allowed us to prioritize compounds to be included in future studies of the environmental fate and transport of BOCs.

Azithromycin removal using pine bark, oak ash and mussel shell

Adsorption is considered an interesting option for removing antibiotics from the environment because of its simple design, low cost, and potential efficiency. In this work we evaluated three by-products (pine bark, oak ash, and mussel shell) as bio-adsorbents for the antibiotic azithromycin (AZM). Furthermore, they were added at doses of 48 t ha-1 to four different soils, then comparing AZM removal for soils with and without bio-adsorbents. Batch-type experiments were used, adding AZM concentrations between 2.5 and 600 μmol L-1 to the different bio-adsorbents and soil + bio-adsorbent mixtures. Regarding the bio-adsorbents, oak ash showed the best adsorption scores (9600 μmol kg-1, meaning >80% retention), followed by pine bark (8280 μmol kg-1, 69%) and mussel shell (between 3000 and 6000 μmol kg-1, 25-50% retention). Adsorption data were adjusted to different models (Linear, Freundlich and Langmuir), showing that just mussel shell presented an acceptable fitting to the Freundlich equation, while pine bark and oak ash did not present a good adjustment to any of the three models. Regarding desorption, the values were always below the detection limit, indicating a rather irreversible adsorption of AZM onto these three by-products. Furthermore, the results showed that when the lowest concentrations of AZM were added to the not amended soils they adsorbed 100% of the antibiotic, whereas when the highest concentrations of AZM were spread, the adsorption decreased to 55%. However, when any of the three bio-adsorbents was added to the soils, AZM adsorption reached 100% for all the antibiotic concentrations used. Desorption was null in all cases for both soils with and without bio-adsorbents. These results, corresponding to an investigation carried out for the first time for the antibiotic AZM, can be seen as relevant in the search of low-cost alternative treatments to face environmental pollution caused by this emerging contaminant.

Emerging organic contaminants in the soil-plant-receptor continuum: transport, fate, health risks, and removal mechanisms

There is a lack of comprehensive reviews tracking emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) within the soil-plant continuum using the source-pathway-receptor-impact-mitigation (SPRIM) framework. Therefore, this review examines existing literature to gain insights into the occurrence, behaviour, fate, health hazards, and strategies for mitigating EOCs within the soil-plant system. EOCs identified in the soil-plant system encompass endocrine-disrupting chemicals, surfactants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticizers, gasoline additives, flame retardants, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Sources of EOCs in the soil-plant system include the land application of biosolids, wastewater, and solid wastes rich in EOCs. However, less-studied sources encompass plastics and atmospheric deposition. EOCs are transported from their sources to the soil-plant system and other receptors through human activities, wind-driven processes, and hydrological pathways. The behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs within the soil-plant system are discussed, including sorption, degradation, phase partitioning, (bio)transformation, biouptake, translocation, and bioaccumulation in plants. Factors governing the behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs in the soil-plant system include pH, redox potential, texture, temperature, and soil organic matter content. The review also discusses the environmental receptors of EOCs, including their exchange with other environmental compartments (aquatic and atmospheric), and interactions with soil organisms. The ecological health risks, human exposure via inhalation of particulate matter and consumption of contaminated food, and hazards associated with various EOCs in the soil-plant system are discussed. Various mitigation measures including removal technologies of EOCs in the soil are discussed. Finally, future research directions are presented.

Agroecological transition: towards a better understanding of the impact of ecology-based farming practices on soil microbial ecotoxicology

Alternative farming systems have developed since the beginning of industrial agriculture. Organic, biodynamic, conservation farming, agroecology and permaculture, all share a grounding in ecological concepts and a belief that farmers should work with nature rather than damage it. As ecology-based agricultures rely greatly on soil organisms to perform the functions necessary for agricultural production, it is thus important to evaluate the performance of these systems through the lens of soil organisms, especially soil microbes. They provide numerous services to plants, including growth promotion, nutrient supply, tolerance to environmental stresses and protection against pathogens. An overwhelming majority of studies confirm that ecology-based agricultures are beneficial for soil microorganisms. However, three practices were identified as posing potential ecotoxicological risks: the recycling of organic waste products, plastic mulching, and pest and disease management with biopesticides. The first two because they can be a source of contaminants; the third because of potential impacts on non-target microorganisms. Consequently, developing strategies to allow a safe recycling of the increasingly growing organic matter stocks produced in cities and factories, and the assessment of the ecotoxicological impact of biopesticides on non-target soil microorganisms, represent two challenges that ecology-based agricultural systems will have to face in the future.

Quality and risk management frameworks for biosolids: An assessment of current international practice

Biosolids, a product of wastewater treatment, provide a valuable resource, but to optimize the use of this resource it is necessary to manage risks posed to public health and the environment. Key requirements include identifying contaminant sources and providing barriers to ensure containment and treatment while maintaining the viability and value of biosolids products. Responsibility for managing biosolids is the remit of many stakeholders but primarily it rests with private and public wastewater facilities. The global variabilities in the way biosolids resources are acknowledged, applied, and managed are substantial. For example, some countries are increasing incineration because of their ability to remove contaminants while others have experienced a proportional decrease in incineration dependent on industrial resources or regarding resource recovery costs and needs. Some jurisdictions focus on energy recovery and others on land application. A risk management framework is a tool that may provide a suitable holistic approach to biosolids management. With this focus, current instruments in practice globally to manage biosolids were assessed for the degree to which they have adopted a risk management framework. To form a basis for this assessment a set of criteria was established by concept mapping several internationally recognized standards. Guidelines for a range of developed and developing countries were then assessed against these criteria. That process enabled the identification of which current practices were holistic in terms of applying biosolids risk management principles from production to end-use. Through this process, risk management gaps and vulnerabilities were identified. The results reveal that the incorporation of risk standards into risk management frameworks around the world is variable for the presence of risk criteria and the scale of detail provided. Contaminant concentrations need perspective within the changing risk landscape for stakeholders and the environment while jointly the opportunities and contaminant challenges require solutions that balance risks.

Quantifying the removal of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in physical, chemical, and biological sludge treatment systems

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) are priority contaminants historically used as flame retardants. PBDEs are known to occur in wastewater biosolids posing potential concerns with the beneficial land application of the biosolids. This study evaluated the removal of 21 congeners in nine full-scale sludge treatment systems including pelletization (P), alkaline stabilization (AS), and aerobic (AE) and anaerobic (AN) digestion. It is the first study to conduct a mass balance analysis of a broad spectrum of PBDEs during physical, chemical, and biological sludge treatment. The PBDE congener pattern in raw sludge and biosolids samples was consistent with commercial formulations. The fully brominated congener BDE-209 dominated biosolids from all sites with an average concentration of 620 ng/g dry weight (dw), followed by BDE-99 (173 ng/g dw) and BDE-47 (162 ng/g dw). Mass balance analysis on the P and AS processes showed no change in PBDE mass flows with treatment. However, aerobic and anaerobic digestion processes reported significant levels of removal and formation of individual congeners, though the results were not consistent between facilities. One aerobic digestion process (AE2) reported an overall average removal of 48%, whereas the other (AE1) reported very high levels of accumulation of tri- and tetraBDE congeners. Similarly, there were significant variations in PBDE behavior across the five anaerobic digestion plants studied. The plant with the longest solids retention time (SRT) (AN1) reported a moderate removal (50%) of overall PBDE loading and lower congeners, whereas other plants (AN2-AN5) showed significant low (-19%) to high (-166%) levels of formation of lower congeners. The results suggest that reduced SRTs result in formation of lower congeners while extended SRTs can lead to moderate removal of some PBDEs. Conventional sludge treatment result in low to moderate PBDE removal and advanced thermal conversion technologies may be needed to improve the contaminant removal during sludge treatment.

Accumulation of microplastics in soil after long-term application of biosolids and atmospheric deposition

Land-applied biosolids can be a considerable source of microplastics in soils. Previous studies reported microplastics accumulation in soils from biosolid application, however, little is known about the contribution of atmospherically deposited microplastics to agricultural soils. In this study, we quantified and characterized microplastics in soils that have been amended with biosolids over the past 23 years. We also collected atmospheric deposition samples to determine the amount and type of plastics added to soils through atmospheric input over a period of about 2 years. Soil samples were taken from a replicated field trial where biosolids have been applied at rates of 0, 4.8, 6.9, and 9.0 t/ha every second crop. The biosolids were anaerobically digested and dewatered, and were applied by spreading onto the soil surface. Soil and atmospheric samples were extracted for microplastics by Fenton's reaction to remove organic matter followed by flotation in a zinc chloride solution to separate plastic from soil particles. Samples were analyzed for microplastics by optical microscopy and Laser Direct Infrared Imaging Analysis (LDIR). The mean number of microplastics identified from biosolids samples was 12,000 particles/kg dry biosolids. The long-term applications of biosolids to the soil led to mean plastics concentrations of 383, 500, and 361 particles/kg dry soil in the 0-10 cm depth for low, medium, and high biosolids application rates, respectively. These plastic concentrations were not significantly different from each other, but significantly higher than those found in non biosolids-amended soil (117 particles/kg dry soil). The dominant plastic types by number found in biosolids were polyurethane, followed by polyethylene, and polyamide. The most abundant plastics in soil samples were polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, polyamide, and polyethylene. Atmospheric deposition contributed to 15 particles/kg dry soil per year and was mainly composed of polyamide fibers. This study shows that long-term application of biosolids led to an accumulation of microplastics in soil, but that atmospheric deposition also contributes a considerable input of microplastics.

Micropollutants in biochar produced from sewage sludge: A systematic review on the impact of pyrolysis operating conditions

Biochar obtained from sewage sludge serves as a valuable soil amendment in agriculture, enhancing soil properties by increasing the nutrient content, cation exchange capacity, water retention, and oxygen transmission. However, its utilisation is hampered by the presence of micropollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Previous studies indicate that the type and amount of micropollutants can be significantly adjusted by selecting the right process parameters. This literature review provides an overview of how (1) pyrolysis temperature, (2) carrier gas flow and type, (3) heating rate, and (4) residence time affect the concentration of micropollutants in biochar produced from sewage sludge. The micropollutants targeted are those listed by the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) and by the International Biochar Institution (IBI), including PAHs, PCDD/Fs, PCBs and VOCs. In addition, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are also considered due to their presence in sewage sludge. The findings suggest that higher pyrolysis temperatures reduce micropollutant levels. Moreover, the injection of a carrier gas (N2 or CO2) during the pyrolysis and cooling processes effectively lowers PAHs and PCDD/Fs, by reducing the contact of biochar with oxygen, which is crucial in mitigating micropollutants. Nevertheless, limited available data impedes an assessment of the impact of these parameters on PFAS in biochar. In addition, further research is essential to understand the effects of carrier gas type, heating rate, and residence time in order to determine the optimal pyrolysis process parameters for generating clean biochar.

Ensuring safety standards in sewage sludge-derived biochar: Impact of pyrolysis process temperature and carrier gas on micropollutant removal

The application of sewage sludge to agricultural land is facing increasing restrictions due to concerns about various micropollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and heavy metals (HMs). As an alternative approach to manage this residue, the use of pyrolysis, a process that transforms sludge into biochar, a carbon-rich solid material, is being explored. Despite the potential benefits of pyrolysis, there is limited data on its effectiveness in removing micropollutants and the potential presence of harmful elements in the resulting biochar. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the temperature and the use of a carrier gas (N2) during a two-stage pyrolysis and cooling on micropollutant removal. Pilot-scale tests showed that a higher temperature (650 °C) and the use of a carrier gas (0.4 L/min N2) during the pyrolysis and the cooling process led to a reduction of PAHs, PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PFAS below their detection limits. As such, the generated biochar aligns with the guidelines set by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) for all micropollutants, except for zinc and copper. Additional investigation is required to determine whether the micropollutants undergo destruction or transition into other pyrolysis end-products, such as the gas or liquid phase.

Influence of Area, Age and Sex on Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances Detected in Roe Deer Muscle and Liver from Selected Areas of Northern Italy

Due to their physicochemical properties, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) persist and bioaccumulate in living organisms, causing adverse health effects. Since exposure to xenobiotics is influenced by factors related to both the living organism and the considered compounds, biomonitoring PFASs' presence in the environment is of crucial importance. This study aimed to detect and quantify 15 PFASs in the muscle and liver of 40 roe deer from a specific area in Northern Italy by UPLC-HRMS. In the roe deer, liver PFAS concentrations were higher than those seen in muscle (p < 0.05). Although PFAS content in animals from urbanized areas was higher than those found in deer from rural areas, this difference was not statistically significant. In female roe deer, the concentration was higher than in males (p < 0.05); moreover, older animals showed higher concentrations of PFASs in the liver than younger animals (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the amount of PFASs was higher in tissues from roe deer belonging to urbanized areas, showing that this species might serve as a good bioindicator due to its territorial behavior. PFAS content was significantly higher in female roe deer, although the reason is not fully known. Finally, PFAS concentration was higher in the liver of older animals, probably due to compromised hepatic function.

Effects of chronic triclosan exposure on nephrotoxicity and gut microbiota dysbiosis in adult mice

Triclosan (TCS), a broad-spectrum, lipophilic, and antibacterial agent, has been commonly used in cosmetics, medical devices, and household products. The toxicity of TCS has recently become a research hotspot. Emerging evidence has shown that TCS can easily migrate to humans and animals and cause adverse effects on various target organs. However, the effects of TCS exposure on nephrotoxicity and underlying mechanisms remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to explore TCS-induced nephrotoxicity. Therefore, we establish a mouse model based on adult male mice to explore the effects of 10-week TCS exposure (50 mg/kg) on kidney. After mice were sacrificed, their blood, feces, and renal tissues were harvested for further analysis. We found that TCS treatment dramatically caused kidney structural damage, and increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (Cr) expression levels, which indicated renal dysfunction. In addition, TCS exposure increased the malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total cholesterol (TCHO) expression levels, which indicated oxidative stress and lipid metabolism changes. The RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of kidney tissue identified 221 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) enriched in 50 pathways, including drug metabolism-other enzymes, oxidative phosphorylation, glutathione metabolism, and inflammatory mediator regulation of TRP channels signaling pathways. The full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing results showed that TCS exposure altered the community of gut microbiota, which was closely related to renal function damage. The above findings provide new insights into the mechanism of TCS-induced nephrotoxicity.

Toxic effects of triclocarban on the histological morphology, physiological and immune response in the gills of the black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon

Triclocarban (TCC) is a widely used broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has become a pollutant threatening the health of aquatic animals. However, the toxic effects of TCC on Penaeus monodon are still lacking. In this study, we exposed P. monodon to 1 μg/L (TCC-1) and 10 μg/L TCC (TCC-10) for 14 days, and the changes of histological morphology, physiological and immune responses in the gills were investigated. The results showed that TCC exposure caused the deformation of the gill vessels and the disordered arrangement of the gill filaments. Oxidative stress biochemical indexes such as H2O2 content, CAT and GPx activity and the relative expression levels of antioxidant-related genes (SOD, GPx and Nrf2) were increased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups; the levels of CAT and HSP70 genes were increased but POD activity was decreased in the TCC-10 group. The relative expression levels of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress indexes such as ERP15 and ATF-6 genes were increased in the TCC-10 group, while the level of GRP78 gene was decreased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups. The relative expression levels of apoptosis indexes such as p53 and JNK genes were increased, but CytC and Casp-3 genes were decreased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups. Furthermore, the relative expression levels of detoxification metabolism-related genes (cytP450 and GST) and osmotic regulation-related genes (NKA-α, NKA-β, CA, AQP, CLC and CCP) were increased in the TCC-10 group. The results showed that TCC exposure could affect the physiological homeostasis in the gills of P. monodon, probably via damaging histological morphology, inducing oxidative stress, and disordering ER stress, apoptosis, detoxification and osmotic regulation.

A Perovskite Photovoltaic Mini-Module-CsPbBr3 Photoelectrochemical Cell Tandem Device for Solar-Driven Degradation of Organic Compounds

Recently, halide perovskites have been widely explored for high-efficiency photocatalysis or photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Here, in order to make an efficient photoanode electrode for the degradation of pollutants, concretely 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), nanoscale cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite was directly formed on the surface of mesoporous titanium dioxide (meso-TiO2) film using a two-step spin-coating process. This photoelectrode recorded a photocurrent of up to 3.02 ± 0.03 mA/cm2 under standard AM 1.5G (100 mW/cm2) illumination through an optimization process such as introducing a thin aluminum oxide (Al2O3) coating layer. Furthermore, to supply high voltage for efficient oxidation of MBT without an external bias, we developed a new photovoltaic/PEC tandem system using a methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) based mini-module consisting of three solar cells interconnected in series and confirmed its successful operation. This approach looks very promising due to its applicability to various PEC reactions.

Sludge drying and dewatering processes influence the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as high-load receptors of microplastics (MPs) from different sources. However, the influence of specific treatment stanges requires further research. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the abundance and chemical characteristics of MPs in the sludge of two major wastewater treatment plants in the Agadir metropolis (Central Atlantic of Morocco). The Aourir plant receives urban influents and the inputs of the M'zar facility were urban and industrial. Samples were collected from the sludge matrices after primary settling, clarifying, dewatering, and drying systems. In addition, the effect of seasonality on MP load was assessed. The results showed that a higher abundance was noticed in raw sludge than in dewatered one in Aourir WWTP, while in M'zar WWTP, a very low decrease is noticed in dried sludge compared to raw sludge. The concentration of MPs in the summer season was significantly higher compared to other seasons for Aourir WWTP, while the winter season was higher for M'zar WWTP. Moreover, the most abundant shapes were fibers and the fraction 100-500 μm was the most preponderant. Eleven polymers were identified by ATR-FTIR, being polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene the most abundant ones. Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray revealed the visible degradation and fragmentation of MPs from sewage sludge and their ability to adsorb inorganic elements. It was estimated that between 2.2 × 107 and 7.4 × 108 MPs were evacuated with the sludge per day. The obtained findings confirmed that WWTP sludge acts as a vector of MPs with a high level of hazard to various matrices, such as landfills, agricultural soils, and groundwater. Overall, consideration must be given to the regulatory system managing the fate of sewage sludge to mitigate the collateral effects and provide solutions.

Selective Adsorption of Organic Micro-Pollutants by Smectite Clays Revealed from Atomistic Simulations

In this study, atomistic simulations were carried out to study the difference in the adsorption process between two similar molecules, diazepam and oxazepam, on Na+-montmorillonite. Kinetic and XRD measurements showed a contrasting adsorption mechanism of these two molecules, differing only by the presence/absence of methyl and hydroxyl groups, with a larger adsorption amount and intercalation for the oxazepam. The structural characterization of these molecules was investigated through DFT calculations and showed the vicinity of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups for only the chair conformation of oxazepam compared to the boat conformation. Classical molecular dynamics simulations of diazepam and the two forms of oxazepam on the external surface of Na+-montmorillonite highlighted the better coordination of the oxazepam-chair conformation, compared to its boat counterpart and diazepam. This has been confirmed through DFT calculations, from which a coordination energy that is greater by 10 kcal·mol-1 is observed. This strongly suggests that the experimentally observed intercalation of oxazepam occurs only in the chair form because of the strong coordination with the Na+ cation present in the Na-Mt interlayer. Classical MD simulations of the intercalated oxazepam chair molecule in the Na-Mt interlayer allowed the evaluation of the interlayer spacing d001, which was in very good agreement with the experimental XRD measurement.

Industrial pilot scale slow pyrolysis reduces the content of organic contaminants in sewage sludge

Pyrolysis has been gaining global interest as a viable option for reducing organic contaminant levels in waste materials such as sewage sludge (SS) for their subsequent use as a soil amendment. However, publicly available knowledge on the capacity of pyrolysis to reduce the levels in SSs is mostly based on laboratory or bench scale studies. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of industrial pilot scale slow pyrolysis at two temperatures and retention times (450 °C, 1 h and 500 °C, 1.5 h) on a wide range of organic and inorganic contaminants in SSs. Pyrolysis at 500 °C decreased the concentrations of the detected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs, by 30-93 %), brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs; by 97-98 %) and most endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs, by 82-96 %) more efficiently than pyrolysis at 450 °C. Estrone and pharmaceuticals, with the exception of paracetamol, were removed to below quantification limits. Non-volatile inorganic contaminants concentrated to the chars (22-46 % increase). These results confirm that slow pyrolysis has the capacity to significantly reduce organic contaminant levels in SSs at an industrial scale, while content of inorganic contaminants depends mainly on the feedstock properties. Pyrolysis temperature of over 500 °C is advised to secure efficient removal of organic contaminants. However, it is anticipated that reactor design with good heat transfer and volatile removal could further improve the removal of organic contaminants from SSs. The results are especially valuable for sludge management operators planning to procure a pyrolysis plant.

Emerging environmental health risks associated with the land application of biosolids: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Over 40% of the six million dry metric tons of sewage sludge, often referred to as biosolids, produced annually in the United States is land applied. Biosolids serve as a sink for emerging pollutants which can be toxic and persist in the environment, yet their fate after land application and their impacts on human health have not been well studied. These gaps in our understanding are exacerbated by the absence of systematic monitoring programs and defined standards for human health protection.

METHODS

The purpose of this paper is to call critical attention to the knowledge gaps that currently exist regarding emerging pollutants in biosolids and to underscore the need for evidence-based testing standards and regulatory frameworks for human health protection when biosolids are land applied. A scoping review methodology was used to identify research conducted within the last decade, current regulatory standards, and government publications regarding emerging pollutants in land applied biosolids.

RESULTS

Current research indicates that persistent organic compounds, or emerging pollutants, found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have the potential to contaminate ground and surface water, and the uptake of these substances from soil amended by the land application of biosolids can result in contamination of food sources. Advanced technologies to remove these contaminants from wastewater treatment plant influent, effluent, and biosolids destined for land application along with tools to detect and quantify emerging pollutants are critical for human health protection.

CONCLUSIONS

To address these current risks, there needs to be a significant investment in ongoing research and infrastructure support for advancements in wastewater treatment; expanded manufacture and use of sustainable products; increased public communication of the risks associated with overuse of pharmaceuticals and plastics; and development and implementation of regulations that are protective of health and the environment.

Mass spectrometry imaging for biosolids characterization to assess ecological or health risks before reuse

Biosolids are byproducts of wastewater treatment. With the increasing global population, the amounts of wastewater to be treated are expanding, along with the amounts of biosolids generated. The reuse of biosolids is now accepted for diversified applications in fields such as agriculture, engineering, agro-forestry. However, biosolids are known to be potential carriers of compounds that can be toxic to living beings or alter the environment. Therefore, biosolid reuse is subject to regulations, mandatory analyses are performed on heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants or pathogens. Conventional methods for the analysis of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants are demanding, lengthy, and sometimes unsafe. Here, we propose mass spectrometry imaging as a faster and safer method using small amounts of material to monitor heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants in different types of biosolids, allowing for ecological and health risk assessment before reuse. Our methodology can be extended to other soil-like matrices.

Smouldering to treat PFAS in sewage sludge

Wastewater treatment plants are accumulation points for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and are threfore important facilities for PFAS treatment. This study explored using smouldering combustion to treat PFAS in sewage sludge. Base case experiments at the laboratory scale (LAB) used dried sludge mixed with sand. High moisture content (MC) LAB tests, 75% MC sludge by mass, explored impacts of MC on treatment and supplemented with granular activated carbon (GAC) to achieve sufficient temperatures for thermal destruction of PFAS. Additional LAB tests explored using calcium oxide (CaO) to support fluorine mineralization. Further tests performed at an oil-drum scale (DRUM) assessed scale on PFAS removal. Pre-treatment sludge and post-treatment ash samples from all tests were analyzed for 12 PFAS (2C-8C). Additional emissions samples were collected from all LAB tests and analyzed for 12 PFAS and hydrogen fluoride. Smouldering removed all monitored PFAS from DRUM tests, and 4-8 carbon chain length PFAS from LAB tests. For base case tests, PFOS and PFOA were completely removed from sludge; however, high contents in the emissions (79-94% of total PFAS by mass) showed volatilization without degradation. Smouldering high MC sludge at ∼ 900 °C (30 g GAC/kg sand) improved PFAS degradation compared to treatment below 800 °C (<20 g GAC/kg sand). Addition of CaO before smouldering reduced PFAS content in emissions by 97-99% by mass; with minimal PFAS retained in the ash and minimal hydrofluoric acid (HF) production, as the fluorine from the PFAS was likely mineralized in the ash. Co-smouldering with CaO had dual benefits of removing PFAS while minimizing other hazardous emission by-products.

Developmental exposure to a real-life environmental chemical mixture alters testicular transcription factor expression in neonatal and pre-pubertal rams, with morphological changes persisting into adulthood

Environmental chemical (EC) exposure may be impacting male reproductive health. The translationally relevant biosolids treated pasture (BTP) sheep model was used to investigate gestational low-level EC mixture exposure on the testes of F1 male offspring. Adult rams from ewes exposed to BTP 1 month before and throughout pregnancy had more seminiferous tubules with degeneration and depletion of elongating spermatids, indicating possible "recovery" from previously reported testicular dysgenesis syndrome-like phenotype in neonatal and pre-pubertal BTP lambs. Expression of transcription factors CREB1 (neonatal) and BCL11A and FOXP2 (pre-pubertal) were significantly higher in the BTP exposed testes, with no changes seen in adults. Increased CREB1, which is crucial for testes development and regulation of steroidogenic enzymes, could be an adaptive response to gestational EC exposure to facilitate the phenotypic recovery. Overall, this demonstrates that testicular effects from gestational exposure to low-level mixtures of ECs can last into adulthood, potentially impacting fertility and fecundity.

Leaching of select per-/poly-fluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceuticals, and hormones through soils amended with composted biosolids

The use of organic amendments to enhance soil health is increasingly being identified as a strategy to improve residential landscapes while also reducing the need for external inputs (e.g., fertilizers, irrigation). Composted biosolids are a re-purposed waste product that can be used in organic amendments to improve the overall sustainability of a municipality by enhancing residential soil carbon content while simultaneously reducing waste materials. However, the biosolids-based feedstock of these compost products has the potential to be a source of organic contaminants. We conducted a laboratory-based soil column experiment to evaluate the potential for different commercially available compost products to act as a source of emerging organic contaminants in residential landscapes. We compared two biosolids-based compost products, a manure-based compost product, and a control (no compost) treatment by irrigating soil columns for 30 days and collecting daily leachate samples to quantify leaching rates of six hormones, eight pharmaceuticals, and seven per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Detection of hormones and pharmaceuticals was rare, suggesting that compost amendments are likely not a major source of these contaminants to groundwater resources. In contrast, we detected three of the seven PFAS compounds in leachate samples throughout the study. Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) was more likely to leach from biosolids-based compost treatments than other treatments (p < 0.05) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) was only detected in biosolids-based treatments (although PFBS concentrations did not significantly differ among treatments). In contrast, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was commonly detected across all treatments (including controls), suggesting potential PFOA experimental contamination. Overall, these results demonstrate that commercially available composted biosolids amendments are likely not a major source of hormone and pharmaceutical contamination. The detection of PFHxA at significantly higher concentrations in biosolids treatments suggests that biosolids-based composts may act as sources of PFHxA to the environment. However, concentrations of multiple PFAS compounds found in leachate in this study were lower than concentrations found in known PFAS hotspots. Therefore, there is potential for environmental contamination from PFAS leaching from composted biosolids, but leachate concentrations are low which should be considered in risk-benefit analyses when considering whether or not to use composted biosolids as an organic amendment to enhance residential soil health.

Response of soil bacterial populations to application of biosolids under short-term flooding

Biosolids are applied to agricultural land as a soil conditioner and source of crop nutrients. However, there is concern that bacteria from biosolids may become established in soils, particularly if that soil becomes water-logged. This study examined the microbial community of arable soils cultivated with barley under different applications of biosolids (0, 24t/ha, 48t/ha) in laboratory mesocosms which simulated a 10-day flood. Nutrients (P and N) and organic matter in the soil increased with application rate, but plant growth was not affected by biosolid application. The biosolids contained 10× more genetic material than the soil, with much lower bacterial diversity, yet application did not significantly change the taxonomy of the soil microbiome, with minor changes related to increased nutrients and SOM. Anaerobic conditions developed rapidly during flooding, causing shifts in the native soil microbiome. Some bacterial taxa that were highly abundant in biosolids had slightly increased relative abundance in amended soils during the flood. After flooding, soil bacterial populations returned to their pre-flood profiles, implying that the native microbial community is resilient to transient changes. The short-term changes in the microbiome of biosolid-amended soils during flooding do not appear to increase the environmental risk posed by biosolid application.

Occurrence of emerging contaminants in biosolids in northern Queensland, Australia

This study aims to identify and quantify different classes of emerging contaminants (ECs), such as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), heavy metals (HMs), polycyclic musks (PMs) in biosolids from different sewage treatment plants (STPs) from regional councils across Northern Queensland, Australia. Biosolids samples were named BS1 to BS7 for each council. The results revealed significant variations in the concentrations of different ECs in biosolids which could be explained in some instances by the characteristics of the upstream sewage network. For instance, BS4-biosolids from a small agricultural shire (largely sugarcane) showed the highest concentration of zinc and copper, which were 2430 and 1050 mg/kg, respectively. Among PPCPs, the concentration of ciprofloxacin was found to be the highest in BS3 and BS5, two large regional council areas which are a mix of domestic and industrial (predominantly domestic) biosolids of 1010 and 1590 ng/g, respectively. In addition, the quantity of sertraline was consistently high in all biosolids except from BS7, one of the smaller regional councils, which is indicative of the domestic catchments attached. PFAS compounds were detected in all biosolids samples except in BS6, one of the small (agricultural and tourist) catchments. Two PFAS compounds emerged as the most common pollutants that were perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). The largest industrial catchment biosolids, BS2 showed the highest concentration of PFOS at 253 ng/g, while the smallest regional council, BS7 showed the maximum concentration of 7.90 ng/g of PFOA. Overall, this study concludes that certain ECs such as HMs, antibiotics, PFOS and PFOA in biosolids may pose high environmental risks.

Land application of industrial wastes: impacts on soil quality, biota, and human health

Globally, waste disposal options such as landfill, incineration, and discharge to water, are not preferred long-term solutions due to their social, environmental, political, and economic implications. However, there is potential for increasing the sustainability of industrial processes by considering land application of industrial wastes. Applying waste to land can have beneficial outcomes including reducing waste sent to landfill and providing alternative nutrient sources for agriculture and other primary production. However, there are also potential hazards, including environmental contamination. This article reviewed the literature on industrial waste applications to soils and assessed the associated hazards and benefits. The review investigated wastes in relation to soil characteristics, dynamics between soils and waste constituents, and possible impacts on plants, animals, and humans. The current body of literature demonstrates the potential for the application of industrial waste into agricultural soils. The main challenge for applying industrial wastes to land is the presence of contaminants in some wastes and managing these to enhance positive effects and reduce negative outcomes to within acceptable limits. Examination of the literature also revealed several gaps in the research and opportunities for further investigation: specifically, a lack of long-term experiments and mass balance assessments, variable waste composition, and negative public opinion.

Performance and mechanisms of citric acid improving biotransformation of waste activated sludge into short-chain fatty acids

Numerous effective chemical strategies have been explored for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge (WAS), but many technologies have been questioned due to the chemical residues. This study proposed a citric acid (CA) treatment strategy for improving SCFAs production from WAS. The optimum SCFAs yield reached 384.4 mg COD/g VSS with 0.08 g CA/g TSS addition. Meanwhile, CA biodegradation occurred and its contribution to the yield of total SCFAs, especially acetic acid, cannot be ignored. Intensive exploration indicated the sludge decomposition, the biodegradability of fermentation substrates, as well as the abundance of fermenting microorganisms were definitely enhanced in the existence of CA. The optimization of SCFAs production techniques based on this study deserved further study. This study comprehensively revealed the performance and mechanisms of CA enhancing biotransformation of WAS into SCFAs and the findings promotes the research of carbon resource recovery from sludge.

Drug Delivery Strategies for Avobenzone: A Case Study of Photostabilization

Several developments and research methods are ongoing in drug technology and chemistry research to elicit effectiveness regarding the therapeutic activity of drugs along with photoprotection for their molecular integrity. The detrimental effect of UV light induces damaged cells and DNA, which leads to skin cancer and other phototoxic effects. The application of sunscreen shields to the skin is important, along with recommended UV filters. Avobenzone is widely used as a UVA filter for skin photoprotection in sunscreen formulations. However, keto-enol tautomerism propagates photodegradation into it, which further channelizes the phototoxic and photoirradiation effects, further limiting its use. Several approaches have been used to counter these issues, including encapsulation, antioxidants, photostabilizers, and quenchers. To seek the gold standard approach for photoprotection in photosensitive drugs, combinations of strategies have been implemented to identify effective and safe sunscreen agents. The stringent regulatory guidelines for sunscreen formulations, along with the availability of limited FDA-approved UV filters, have led many researchers to develop perfect photostabilization strategies for available photostable UV filters, such as avobenzone. From this perspective, the objective of the current review is to summarize the recent literature on drug delivery strategies implemented for the photostabilization of avobenzone that could be useful to frame industrially oriented potential strategies on a large scale to circumvent all possible photounstable issues of avobenzone.

Nationwide Occurrence and Unexpected Severe Pollution of Fluorescent Brighteners in the Sludge of China: An Emerging Anthropogenic Marker

Fluorescent brighteners (FBs) are a group of mass-produced dyestuff chemicals that have been extensively used for decades. However, knowledge of their occurrence in municipal wastewater treatment plants on a large geographical scale remains unknown. Herein, we implemented the first nationwide survey for wastewater-derived FBs in sludge across major cities in China. All 25 target FBs were detected in the nationwide sludge. Ionic FBs exhibited much higher concentrations than nonionic FBs. The total sludge concentrations of 25 FBs (∑₂₅FBs) ranged from 7300 to 1,520,000 ng/g, with a median of 35,300 ng/g. A clear geographical distribution of significantly higher concentrations of FBs was found in East and Central China than in West China (p < 0.05). The sludge concentrations of ∑₂₅FBs were correlated well with the gross domestic product (GDP) and population size at the provincial level in China (p < 0.05), demonstrating the significance of anthropogenic impacts on FB levels in urban sludge. The nationwide annual emission of total FBs into sludge in China is estimated to be 835 tons/year, of which 134 tons/year is directly released into sludge-applied soils. Our work highlights another new class of chemicals that significantly contribute to the chemical mixtures in urban sludge and thus require immediate attention.

Levels and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals in River Sosiani, Kenya

The continued frequent detection of pharmaceuticals in the environment is of major concern due to potential human and ecological risks. This study evaluated 30 antibiotics from 8 classes: sulphonamides (SAs), penicillins (PNs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), macrolides (MLs), lincosamides (LINs), nitroimidazoles (NIs), diaminopyrimidines (DAPs), salfones and 4 anthelmintics benzimidazoles (BZs) in surface water and sediments from River Sosiani in Eldoret, Kenya. Samples were collected during the wet and dry seasons and subjected to solid phase extraction using HLB cartridges. A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was used for the simultaneous quantification of the compounds. Chromatographic separation was on a reversed-phase Zorkax Eclipse Plus C18 column eluted in a gradient program and compounds detected by mass spectrometer operated in a positive electrospray ionization (+ ESI) mode. Twenty-eight antibiotics were detected in water where 22 had a 100% detection frequency and the remaining 4 showed detection frequencies ranging from 5 to 47%. Three BZs had a 100% detection frequency. Detectable concentrations of the pharmaceuticals in water ranged between 0.1 and 247 ng L^-1 and 0.01 and 974 µg kg^-1 in the sediments. The sulfonamide, sulfamethoxazole, had the highest concentration in water (247 ng L^-1), whereas penicillin G showed the highest concentrations in sediments (414-974 µg kg^-1). Quantified pharmaceuticals decreased in the order SAs > DAPs > FQs > ATs > PNs ≈ MCs ≈ LNs > NIs in water, and followed the order PNs > BZs > FQs > MLs > DAPs ≈ LNs > NIs > SAs in sediments. Risk quotients (RQ_w) showed that sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin were of high ecological risk in the surface water (RQ_w values of 1.11 and 3.24, respectively), whereas penicillin V, ampicillin, penicillin G, norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, tylosin, and lincomycin were of medium ecological risk in the aquatic system. The findings show high prevalence of pharmaceuticals in surface water and sediments and are therefore potential ecological hazards. Such information is vital when devising mitigation strategies.

Investigation of micropollutants in household waste fractions processed by anaerobic digestion: target analysis, suspect- and non-target screening

Household waste represents a major source of energy, nutrients, and recyclable material. In order to exploit benefits and avoid hazards in the context of circular economy, the risk profile towards human and the environment should be assessed. Here, we investigated the presence of micropollutants by quantitative target analysis, suspect and non-target screening and evaluated changes in the chemical fingerprint upon anaerobic digestion. Extracts were analyzed by reversed phase liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirty-one of 51 target micropollutants were detected in low ng/mL levels except for few detections at µg/mL levels. The micropollutants quantified in this study included the following: pharmaceuticals (salicylic acid, amitriptyline, carbamazepine); biocides (triclocarban, 2-phenylphenol); industrial compounds used in, e.g., paper industry (pentachlorphenol, PFOS, PFOA, bisphenol A); aromatics, polycyclic aromatics, and heteroaromatics, and their alkylated, hydroxylated, or carboxylated analogues. Fifty of 206 compounds from the suspect screening list were tentatively identified. These included phthalates, methylparaben, phenol, benzophenone, and pharmaceuticals, e.g., ibuprofen. Most compounds detected by GC-MS decreased more than twofold in peak height or remained unaffected by the anaerobic digestion, and very few increased more than twofold, e.g., p-cresol, menthol, and octadecanal. From the LC-HRMS non-target screening analysis, 250 chemical components were resolved using the multiway curve resolution technique PARAFAC2; of these, carbidopa was the only identified unknown.

The interaction mechanisms of co-existing polybrominated diphenyl ethers and engineered nanoparticles in environmental waters: A critical review

This review focuses on the occurrence and interactions of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in water systems and the generation of highly complex compounds in the environment. The release of ENPs and BFRs (e.g. PBDEs) to aquatic environments during their usage and disposal are summarised together with their key interaction mechanisms. The major interaction mechanisms including electrostatic, van der Waals, hydrophobic, molecular bridging and steric, hydrogen and π-bonding, cation bridging and ligand exchange were identified. The presence of ENPs could influence the fate and behaviour of PBDEs through the interactions as well as induced reactions under certain conditions which increases the formation of complex compounds. The interaction leads to alteration of behaviour for PBDEs and their toxic effects to ecological receptors. The intermingled compound (ENPs-BFRs) would show different behaviour from the parental ENPs or BFRs, which are currently lack of investigation. This review provided insights on the interactions of ENPs and BFRs in artificial, environmental water systems and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which are important for a comprehensive risk assessment.

Wide-scope target and suspect screening of emerging contaminants in sewage sludge from Nigerian WWTPs by UPLC-qToF-MS

There is currently a paucity of scientific data in Africa on the analysis and occurrence of emerging contaminants in sewage sludge. In this work, the occurrence of European Union (EU) Water Framework Directive priority substances and wide-range emerging contaminants were investigated and discussed comprehensively in the sewage sludge samples from three different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Lagos, Nigeria. The identification strategy was implemented by target and suspect screening in liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. 250 compounds were identified in the sewage sludge samples from the investigated WWTPs. From 250 detected compounds, 182 compounds were quantified, and 78 compounds significantly show high environmental risk score (calculated from provisional no-effect concentrations values (PNEC) as well as their environmental quality data (EQs)). Most of contaminants detected at high amount belong to pharmaceuticals and are from hospital WWTP. While the highest concentration (72.4 mg kg^-1) was measured for salicylic acid (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), antibiotics showed high concentrations up to 24.4 and 28.4 mg kg^-1 for ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, respectively. Three simple factors including frequency of exceedance, frequency of occurrence and extent of exceedance were used to aid prioritization of these substances in future monitoring campaigns. This work presents the first comprehensive and wide-scope screening of a large number of emerging contaminants in sewage sludge from Nigerian WWTPs.

Determination of pharmaceuticals and metabolites in sludge and hydrochar after hydrothermal carbonization using sonication-QuEChERS extraction method and UHPLC LTQ/Orbitrap MS

Pharmaceuticals (PhACs) are an important group of emerging contaminants that are released continuously in the environment from wastewater treatments plants (WWTPs). They can produce biological effects even though at very low concentrations. Conventional WWTPs are not able to remove or degrade completely emerging pollutants resulting in the presence of PhACs in sewage sludge after wastewater treatment. PhACs are found in sludge at low ppb-ppt levels, and their analysis and detection is a difficult task due to the complexity of sewage sludge matrices. Hydrothermal carbonization is currently being proposed as a suitable conversion technology for sewage sludge management to recover valuable products and to be used for soil amendment. In this work, a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS)-based methodology with a dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) clean-up followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution linear ion trap-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-LTQ/Orbitrap MS), operated in positive ionization mode, was adopted to investigate 33 multiclass pharmaceuticals in sewage sludge and in hydrochar produced after hydrothermal carbonization. The analytical method was first optimized studying various extraction parameters and finally validated in terms of linearity, recovery, intra and inter-day precisions, expanded uncertainty (%U)/Horrat ratio at three spiking levels, matrix-effects (ME), process efficiency (PE), and limits of detection and quantification. The developed methodology fulfilled all analytical requirements and was finally applied to sludge samples from the WWTP of Ioannina city where a group of antibiotics was detected at concentrations up to 15 ng g^-1 and psychiatric drugs such as amisulpride, clozapine, and citalopram were detected at higher concentration levels up to 205, 87.4 and 63.2 ng g^-1, respectively. The method was also applied to hydrothermally treated sludge sample under different reaction conditions. Most of the antibiotic compounds were not detected, and several psychiatric drugs such as mirtazapine, bupropion, valsartan, diazepam, and caffeine were found at concentrations below the LOQ.

Response pathways of superoxide dismutase and catalase under the regulation of triclocarban-triggered oxidative stress in Eisenia foetida: Comprehensive mechanism analysis based on cytotoxicity and binding model

Triclocarban (TCC) is an emerging environmental contaminant, posing potential ecological risks. Displaying a high accumulation effect and 120-day half-life in the soil environment, the toxic effects of TCC to soil organisms have been widely reported. Previous studies have confirmed that TCC can induce the oxidative stress and changes in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in earthworms, but the underlying mechanisms of oxidative stress and disorder in antioxidant enzyme activities induced by TCC have not yet been elucidated. Here, we explored the multiple response mechanisms of SOD and CAT under the regulation of oxidative stress induced by TCC. Results indicated that higher-dose (0-2.0 mg/L) TCC exposure triggered the overproduction of ROS in Eisenia foetida coelomocytes, causing oxidative damage and a decrease in cell viability that was response to ROS accumulation. The TCC-induced inhibition of intracellular SOD/CAT activity was found under the regulation of oxidative stress (SOD: 29.2 %; CAT: 18.5 %), and this effect was blunted by antioxidant melatonin. At the same time, the interaction between antioxidative enzymes and TCC driven by various forces (SOD: electrostatic interactions; CAT: van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding) led to inhibited SOD activity (9.84 %) and enhanced CAT activity (17.5 %). Then, to elucidate the binding mode of TCC, we explored the changes in SOD and CAT structure (protein backbone and secondary structure), the microenvironment of aromatic amino acids, and aggregation behavior through multispectral techniques. Molecular docking results showed that TCC inhibited SOD activity in a substrate competitive manner and enhanced CAT activity by the stabilizing effects of TCC on the heme groups. Collectively, this study reveals the response mechanisms of SOD/CAT under the regulation of TCC-triggered oxidative stress and shed a new light on revealing the toxic pathways of exogenous pollutants on antioxidant-related proteins function.

Plasma and Skin Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Levels in Dairy Cattle with Lifetime Exposures to PFAS-Contaminated Drinking Water and Feed

Plasma and ear notch samples were removed from 164 Holstein cows and heifers, which had lifetime exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) through consumption of contaminated feed and water sources. A suite of nine PFAS including five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCA) and four perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSA) was quantified in plasma and ear notch samples by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bioaccumulation of four- to nine-carbon PFCAs did not occur in plasma or skin, but PFSAs longer than four carbons accumulated in both plasma and skin. Exposure periods of at least 1 year were necessary for PFSAs to reach steady-state concentrations in plasma. Neither parity (P = 0.76) nor lactation status (P = 0.30) affected total PFSA concentrations in mature cow plasma. In contrast, lactation status greatly affected (P < 0.0001) total PFSA concentrations in ear notch samples. Skin samples could be used for biomonitoring purposes in instances when on-farm blood collection and plasma preparation are not practical.

Chemicals/materials of emerging concern in farmlands: sources, crop uptake and potential human health risks

Certain chemicals/materials that are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been widely detected in water bodies and terrestrial systems worldwide while other CECs occur at undetectable concentrations. The primary sources of CECs in farmlands are agricultural inputs, such as wastewater, biosolids, sewage sludge, and agricultural mulching films. The percent increase in cropland area during 1950-2016 was 30 and the rise in land use for food crops during 1960-2018 was 100-500%, implying that there could be a significant CEC burden in farmlands in the future. In fact, the alarming concentrations (μg kg^-1) of certain CECs such as PBDEs, PAEs, and PFOS that occur in farmlands are 383, 35 400 and 483, respectively. Also, metal nanoparticles are reported even at the mg kg^-1 level. Chronic root accumulation followed by translocation of CECs into plants results in their detectable concentrations in the final plant produce. Thus, there is a continuous flow of CECs from farmlands to agricultural produce, causing a serious threat to the terrestrial food chain. Consequently, CECs find their way to the human body directly through CEC-laden plant produce or indirectly via the meat of grazing animals. Thus, human health could be at the most critical risk since several CECs have been shown to cause cancers, disruption of endocrine and cognitive systems, maternal-foetal transfer, neurotoxicity, and genotoxicity. Overall, this comprehensive review provides updated information on contamination of chemicals/materials of concern in farmlands globally, sources for their entry, uptake by crop plants, and their likely impact on the terrestrial food chain and human health.

Recycling of municipal sewage sludge incineration fly ash based on (NH4) 2SO4 roasting-acid leaching and filling PP matrix process

Sludge incineration is one of the most efficient sludge treatment methods. The fly ash produced by incineration must be handled further since it has a significant number of heavy metals. In this study, the chemical composition of sewage sludge incineration fly ash (SSA) generated from Zhejiang in various months was identified by XRD, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), and SEM analyzes. The SSA were treated by a (NH₄)₂SO₄ roasting-acid leaching process to determine its effect on the elimination performance of heavy metals. The SSA content on the mechanical properties and heavy metal leaching of modified SSA-filled PP composite were also studied. Results show (NH₄)₂SO₄ roasting-acid leaching process has a good effect of eliminating heavy metals, with the highest leaching of Zn of 86.4%. The presence of sodium stearate modifier increases activation index of SSA and then improves the compatibility of SSA particles in PP, resulting for the composites have relatively excellent mechanical properties. For the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test, modified SSA particles can be effectively encapsulated with PP resins, which have a considerable inhibitory effect on heavy metal leaching. This process from this study provides a reference for sewage sludge treatment by using modified SSA as a polymer filler to achieve the immobilization of heavy metals and the resource recycling.

Groundwater contamination pathways of phthalates and bisphenol A: origin, characteristics, transport, and fate - A review

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) or phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) that may harm biota and human health. Humans can be exposed to these contaminants by drinking water consumption from water sources such as groundwater. Before their presence in aquifer systems, phthalates and BPA can be found in many matrices due to anthropogenic activities, which result in long-term transport to groundwater reservoirs by different mechanisms and reaction processes. The worldwide occurrence of phthalates and BPA concentrations in groundwater have ranged from 0.1 × 10^-3 to 3 203.33 µg L^-1 and from 0.09 × 10^-3 to 228.04 µg L^-1, respectively. Therefore, the aim of this review is to describe the groundwater contamination pathways of phthalates and BPA from the main environmental sources to groundwater. Overall, this article provides an overview that integrates phthalate and BPA environmental cycling, from their origin to human reception via groundwater consumption. Additionally, in this review, the readers can use the information provided as a principal basis for existing policy ratification and for governments to develop legislation that may incorporate these endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) as priority contaminants. Indeed, this may trigger the enactment of regulatory guidelines and public policies that help to reduce the exposure of these EDCs in humans by drinking water consumption.

Confirming the presence of selected antibiotics and steroids in Norwegian biogas digestate

Farms utilizing sewage sludge and manure in their agronomic plant production are recognized as potential hotspots for environmental release of antibiotics and the resulting promotion of antibiotic resistance. As part of the circular economy, the use of biogas digestates for soil fertilizing is steadily increasing, but their potential contribution to the spreading of pharmaceutical residues is largely unknown. Digestates can be produced from a variety of biowaste resources, including sewage sludge, manure, food waste, and fish ensilage. We developed a method for the detection of 17 antibiotics and 2 steroid hormones and applied the method to detect pharmaceutical residues in digestates from most municipal biogas plants in Norway, covering a variety of feedstocks. The detection frequency and measured levels were overall low for most compounds, except a few incidents which cause concern. Specifically, relatively high levels of amoxicillin, penicillin G, ciprofloxacin, and prednisolone were detected in different digestates. Further, ipronidazole was detected in four digestates, although no commercial pharmaceutical products containing ipronidazole are currently registered in Norway. A simplified risk assessment showed a high risk for soil microorganisms and indicates the tendency for antibiotic-resistant bacteria for penicillin G and amoxicillin. For prednisolone and ipronidazole; however, no toxicity data is available for reliable risk assessments.

Simulated leaching of PFAS from land-applied municipal biosolids at agricultural sites

Biosolids are an important resource for agricultural practice but have recently received increased focus as a potential source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment. Few studies have investigated the transport of PFAS through the unsaturated zone under conditions relevant to biosolids application sites. Herein, the unsaturated flow and transport model HYDRUS is used to evaluate the leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from land-applied biosolids used in agricultural practice to determine the impacts of PFAS leaching on underlying groundwater resources. This numerical case study was based on conditions and operations at two test sites in central Illinois where biosolids were applied at agronomic rates and where PFAS contents and desorption characteristics were previously characterized. Each site possessed different vadose zone soil textural heterogeneity. Simulations were performed under actual present-day meteorological conditions and extended 150 years beyond the initial biosolids application. These long-term simulations demonstrate how soil equilibrium sorption/desorption processes within the biosolids-amended surface soils effectively control the transport rate of individual PFAS to groundwater. Air-water interfacial (AWI) adsorption, which is sometimes considered to be a significant source of PFAS retention in vadose zone soils, was observed to have minimal impacts on PFAS leaching rates within the biosolids-amended surface soils at these sites. Additionally, the impact of AWI adsorption was found to be most significant for PFAS transport within the underlying vadose zone soils when these soils were more texturally homogeneous and considerably less significant within the texturally heterogeneous soils represented herein. The results of multiple long-term simulations were used to develop an empirical equation that relates predicted maximum PFAS pore-water concentrations reaching the saturated zone with changes in PFAS concentrations in the biosolids-amended soil for various biosolids re-application events. This approach is shown to be very useful in developing site-specific PFAS soil screening levels and/or maximum leachate levels for PFAS in support of establishing best management practices (BMPs) for land application of biosolids.

Peroxidases-based enticing biotechnological platforms for biodegradation and biotransformation of emerging contaminants

Rampant industrial boom, urbanization, and exponential population growth resulted in widespread environmental pollution, with water being one of the leading affected resources. All kinds of pollutants, including phenols, industrial dyes, antibiotics, pharmaceutically active residues, and persistent/volatile organic compounds, have a paramount effect, either directly or indirectly, on human health and aquatic entities. Strategies for affordable and efficient decontamination of these emerging pollutants have become the prime focus of academic researchers, industry, and government to constitute a sustainable human society. Classical treatment techniques for environmental contaminants are associated with several limitations, such as inefficiency, complex pretreatments, overall high process cost, high sludge generation, and highly toxic side-products formation. Enzymatic remediation is considered a green and ecologically friendlier method that holds considerable potential to mitigate any kinds of contaminating agents. Exploiting the potential of various peroxidases for pollution abatement is an emerging research area and has considerable advantages, such as efficiency and ease of handling, over other methods. This work is designed to provide recent progress in deploying peroxidases as green and versatile biocatalytic tools for the degradation and transformation of a spectrum of potentially hazardous environmental pollutants to broaden their scope for biotechnological and environmental purposes. More studies are required to explicate the degradation mechanisms, assess the toxicology levels of bio-transformed metabolites, and standardize the treatment strategies for economic viability.

Short-Term Benzalkonium Chloride (C12) Exposure Induced the Occurrence of Wide-Spectrum Antibiotic Resistance in Agricultural Soils

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are global pollutants that pose a potential risk to human health. Benzalkonium chloride (C₁₂) (BC) disinfectants are thought to exert selection pressure on antibiotic resistance. However, evidence of BC-induced changes in antibiotic resistance in the soil environment is lacking. Here, we established short-term soil microcosms to investigate ARG profile dynamics in agricultural soils amended with sulfamethazine (SMZ, 10 mg kg^-1) and gradient concentrations of BC (0-100 mg kg^-1), using high-throughput quantitative PCR and Illumina sequencing. With the increase in BC concentration, the number of ARGs detected in the soil increased, but the normalized ARG abundance decreased. The added SMZ had a limited impact on ARG profiles. Compared to broad-spectrum fungicidal BC, the specificity of SMZ significantly affected the microbial community. Network analysis found that low-medium BC exposure concentrations resulted in the formation of small but strong ARG co-occurrence clusters in the soil, while high BC exposure concentration led to a higher incidence of ARGs. Variation partitioning analysis suggested that BC stress was the major driver shaping the ARG profile. Overall, this study highlighted the emergence and spread of BC-induced ARGs, potentially leading to the antimicrobial resistance problem in agricultural soils.

A critical review on utilization of sewage sludge as environmental functional materials

Sewage sludge (SS) is increasingly used as an environment functional material to reduce or control pollution and improve plant growth because of the large amounts of carbon and essential plant nutrients in it. To achieve the best application results, it is essential to comprehensively review recent progress in SS utilization. This review aims to fill the gaps in knowledge by describing the properties of SS, and its usage as adsorbents, catalysts and fertilizers, and certain application mechanisms. Although SS generates several benefits for the environment and humans, many challenges still exist to limit the application, including the risks posed by potentially toxic substances (e.g., heavy metals) in SS. Therefore, future research directions are discussed and how to make SS applications more feasible in terms of technology and economy.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Its Drivers-A Review

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical issue in health care in terms of mortality, quality of services, and financial damage. In the battle against AMR, it is crucial to recognize the impacts of all four domains, namely, mankind, livestock, agriculture, and the ecosystem. Many sociocultural and financial practices that are widespread in the world have made resistance management extremely complicated. Several pathways, including hospital effluent, agricultural waste, and wastewater treatment facilities, have been identified as potential routes for the spread of resistant bacteria and their resistance genes in soil and surrounding ecosystems. The overuse of uncontrolled antibiotics and improper treatment and recycled wastewater are among the contributors to AMR. Health-care organizations have begun to address AMR, although they are currently in the early stages. In this review, we provide a brief overview of AMR development processes, the worldwide burden and drivers of AMR, current knowledge gaps, monitoring methodologies, and global mitigation measures in the development and spread of AMR in the environment.

Biosolids: The Trojan horse or the beautiful Helen for soil fertilization?

The simultaneous requirement to manage resources and wastes in more rational way has meant that many communities worldwide have begun to search for long-term alternative solutions. Reuse and recovery of biosolids is considered to be a constant solution of circular sustainability, as waste disposal without further reuse background like fertilizer is no longer an alternative to be promoted. There have been developed many treatment methods over the years for the stabilization and sanitization of biosolids. However, the literature concludes that none of them is fully integrated by meeting all the basic criteria. Each method has its Achilles heel, and the appropriateness of the method lies in what is the goal each time. There are conventional methods with positive reciprocity in terms of sustainability, reuse indicators and technological maturity, but have high risk of microorganisms' reappearance. New advanced sustainable technologies, such as cold plasma, need to be further studied to apply on a large scale. The reuse of biosolids as construction materials is also discussed in the context of circular economy. Biosolids reuse and management legislation frame need to be revised, as a directive adopted 30 years ago does not fully meet communities' current needs.

Electrospun Polylactic Acid-Based Fibers Loaded with Multifunctional Antibacterial Biobased Polymers

Here, we report the development of antibacterial and compostable electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) fibers by incorporation of a multifunctional biobased polymer in the process. The multifunctional polymer was synthesized from the bio-sourced itaconic acid building block by radical polymerization followed by click chemistry reaction with hydantoin groups. The resulting polymer possesses triazole and hydantoin groups available for further N-alkylation and chlorination reaction, which provide antibacterial activity. This polymer was added to the electrospinning PLA solution at 10 wt %, and fiber mats were successfully prepared. The obtained fibers were surface-modified through the accessible functional groups, leading to the corresponding cationic triazolium and N-halamine groups. The fibers with both antibacterial functionalities demonstrated high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. While the fibers with cationic surface groups are only effective against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus), upon chlorination, the activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is significantly improved. In addition, the compostability of the electrospun fibers was tested under industrial composting conditions, showing that the incorporation of the antibacterial polymer does not impede the disintegrability of the material. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility of this biobased multifunctional polymer as an antibacterial agent for biodegradable polymeric materials with potential application in medical uses.
