Multimode ultrasonic-assisted decontamination of fruits and vegetables: A review

Fruits and vegetables (F&V) are a significant part of our diet consumption. Microbial and pesticide residues are the predominant safety hazards of F&V consumption. Ordinary water washing has a very limited effect on removing microorganisms and pesticide residues and requires high water usage. Ultrasound, as an environmentally friendly technology, shows excellent potential for reducing microbial contamination and pesticide residue. This paper summarizes the research on ultrasound application in F&V washing, including the removal of microbial and pesticide residues and the comprehensive effect on their physicochemical characteristics. Furthermore, multimode ultrasonic-assisted techniques like multi-frequency and sequential ultrasound, combined with novel and conventional methods, can enhance the ultrasound-based effect and be more effective and sustainable in preventing F&V from microbial contamination. Overall, this work explicitly establishes the background on the potential for ultrasound cleaning and disinfection in the food industry as a green, effective, and ultimate method of preventing foodborne illnesses.

Ensuring food safety by artificial intelligence-enhanced nanosensor arrays

Current analytical methods utilized for food safety inspection requires improvement in terms of their cost-efficiency, speed of detection, and ease of use. Sensor array technology has emerged as a food safety assessment method that applies multiple cross-reactive sensors to identify specific targets via pattern recognition. When the sensor arrays are fabricated with nanomaterials, the binding affinity of analytes to the sensors and the response of sensor arrays can be remarkably enhanced, thereby making the detection process more rapid, sensitive, and accurate. Data analysis is vital in converting the signals from sensor arrays into meaningful information regarding the analytes. As the sensor arrays can generate complex, high-dimensional data in response to analytes, they require the use of machine learning algorithms to reduce the dimensionality of the data to gain more reliable outcomes. Moreover, the advances in handheld smart devices have made it easier to read and analyze the sensor array signals, with the advantages of convenience, portability, and efficiency. While facing some challenges, the integration of artificial intelligence with nanosensor arrays holds promise for enhancing food safety monitoring.

Sensitive fluorescence detection of glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium pesticides by purine-hydrazone-Cu2+ complex

Organophosphorus pesticides play an important role as broad-spectrum inactivating herbicides in agriculture. Developing a method for rapid and efficient organophosphorus pesticides detection is still urgent due to the increasing concern on food safety. An organo-probe (ZDA), synthesized by purine hydrazone derivative and 2,2'-dipyridylamine derivative, was applied in sensitive recognition of Cu2+ with detection limit of 300 nM. Mechanism study via density functional theory (DFT) and job's plot experiment revealed that ZDA and Cu2+ ions form a 1:2 complex quenching the fluorescence emission. Moreover, this fluorescent complex ZDA-Cu2+ was applicable for detecting glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium following fluorescence enhancement mechanism, with detection limits of 11.26 nM and 11.5 nM, respectively. Meanwhile, ZDA-Cu2+ was effective and sensitive when it is used for pesticide detection, reaching the maximum value and stabilizing in 1 min. Finally, the ZDA-Cu2+ probe could also be tolerated in cell assay environment, implying potential bio-application.

Changes in chemical properties and microbial communities' composition of a forest litter-based biofertilizer produced through aerated solid-state culture under different oxygen conditions

Fermented forest litter (FFL) is a bioproduct used as biofertilizer for several decades in Eastern Asia and Latin America. It is locally handcrafted by farmers in anaerobic conditions by fermenting forest litter added with agricultural by-products such as whey, cereal bran, and molasses. The aim of this study was to characterize the FFL process and product through gas and liquid chromatography analyses. It also provides some highlights on the influence of O2 on this solid-state culture. Under anoxic condition, a maximum CO2 production rate (CDPR) of 0.41 mL/h∙g dry matter (dm) was reached after 8 days. The main volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were ethanol and ethyl acetate, with a production rate profile similar to CDPR. After 21 days of culture, no residual sucrose nor lactose was detected. Lactic and acetic acids reached 58.8 mg/g dm and 10.2 mg/g dm, respectively, ensuring the acidification of the matrix to a final pH of 4.72. A metabarcoding analysis revealed that heterolactic acid bacteria (Lentilactobacillus, Leuconostoc), homolactic acid bacteria (Lactococcus), and yeasts (Saccharomyces, Clavispora) were predominant. Predicted genes in the microbiome confirmed the potential link between detected bacteria and acids and VOCs produced. When O2 was fed to the cultures, final pH reached values up to 8.5. No significant amounts of lactic nor acetic acid were found. In addition, a strong shift in microbial communities was observed, with a predominance of Proteobacteria and molds, among which are potential pathogens like Fusarium species. This suggests that particular care must be brought to maintain anoxic conditions throughout the process.

A dual-mode sensing platform based on metal-organic framework for colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent detection of organophosphorus pesticide

Pesticide residues have raised considerable concern about environmental health and food safety. Despite a great advance in enzymatic sensors for pesticide detection, the intrinsic fragility of native enzyme and possible fake results due to single mode signal have hindered its wide application. Here, a novel dual-mode sensor is reported for organophosphorus pesticide detection by using metal-organic framework (MOF) nanozyme NH2-CuBDC as sensing element. The intrinsic peroxidase-mimicking activity and fluorescence property of NH2-CuBDC enable both colorimetric and fluorescent detection of chlorpyrifos. Compared with previously reported chlorpyrifos sensors, our sensor exhibits outstanding sensitivity, and the limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) in colorimetric and fluorescent modes are 1.57 ng/mL and 2.33 ng/mL, respectively. No obvious interferences from other substances were measured and chlorpyrifos analysis in real samples presented good reliability, showing practical potential. This work is anticipated to provide new insights to develop multifunctional nanozymes and integrated multi-mode sensing platforms.

Applicability of Food Monitoring Data for Assessing Relative Exposure Contributions of Pyrethroids in Retrospective Human Biomonitoring Risk Estimations

The use of pyrethroids is very broad and shows increasing trends. Human biomonitoring studies represent the best approach for realistic risk estimations, but their interpretation requires a tiered approach. A previous HBM4EU study indicated levels in European children groups just around the threshold for concern, requiring further refinement. The main difficulty is that several pyrethroids with different toxicity potencies generate the same urinary metabolites. As diet is the main pyrethroid source for the general population, EU food monitoring data reported by EFSA have been used to estimate the relative contribution of each pyrethroid. The main contributors were cypermethrin for DCCA and 3-PBA and lambda-cyhalothrin for CFMP. Urinary levels predicted from food concentration according to the EFSA diets were mostly within the range of measured levels, except 3-PBA and CFMP levels in children, both below measured levels. The predicted lower levels for 3-PBA can be explained by the very low Fue value, initially proposed as conservative, but that seems to be unrealistic. The discrepancies for CFMP are mostly for the highest percentiles and require further assessments. The refined assessments included the revision of the previously proposed human biomonitoring guidance values for the general population, HBM-GV Gen Pop, following recent toxicological reevaluations, and the estimation of hazard quotients (HQs) for each individual pyrethroid and for the combined exposure to all pyrethroids. All HQs were below 1, indicating no immediate concern, but attention is required, particularly for children, with HQs in the range of 0.2-0.3 for the highly exposed group. The application of probabilistic methods offers assessments at the population level, addressing the variability in exposure and risk and providing relevant information for Public Health impact assessments and risk management prioritization.

Green synthesis trends and potential applications of bimetallic nanoparticles towards the sustainable development goals 2030

The world faces threats that the United Nations has classified into 17 categories with different objectives as solutions for each challenge that are enclosed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These actions involved the widespread use of science and technology as pathways to ensure their implementation. In this regard, sustainability science seeks the research community's contribution to addressing sustainable development challenges. Specifically, nanotechnology has been recognized as a key tool to provide disruptive and effective strategies to reach the SDGs. This review proposes the application of bimetallic nanoparticle substances capable of providing possible solutions to achieve target SDG 3: good health and well-being, SDG 6: clean water and sanitation, and SDG 12: responsible consumption and production. Furthermore, the term green nanotechnology is introduced in each section to exemplify how green synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles have been used to resolve each target SDG. This review also outlines the current scenario regarding the utilization of metallic nanomaterials in the market, together with the upscaling challenges and the lack of understanding of the long-term effects and hazards to the environment regarding bimetallic nanoparticles.

Bifunctional Cu(II)-containing PDA-PEI copolymer dots: Demonstration of a dual-mode platform for colorimetric-fluorescent detection of glyphosate in the environment

The reliable and accurate detection of glyphosate is urgently demanded because it is related to food and environmental safety. In this contribution, a PDA-PEI/Cu2+ complex that possesses peroxidase-mimetic activity and stimulus-responsive fluorescence was fabricated by coordinating Cu2+ with polydopamine-polyethyleneimine copolymer dots (PDA-PEI CPDs). With the introduction of Cu2+, the fluorescence intensity of PDA-PEI CPDs dropped sharply owing to the electron transfer effect. As a peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme, the PDA-PEI/Cu2+ complex owns catalytic capacity to oxidize the colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, leading a further fluorescence quenching by internal filtering effect by oxTMB. Once the glyphosate participated, the fluorescence signal of PDA-PEI CPDs is recovered significantly because of the formation of more stable Glyp-Cu2+ complexes, meanwhile the peroxidase-mimicking activity of PDA-PEI/Cu2+ complex could be strongly hindered. According to this principle, a novel and extremely convenient 'turn off' colorimetric and 'turn on' fluorescence sensing platform can be established for dual-mode detection of glyphosate. The favorable sensitivity and selectivity and were verified in the analysis of glyphosate in the environment through the marriage of dual-signal sensing platform. The detection limit of the dual-mode glyphosate sensing platform was 103.82 ng/mL for colorimetric assay and 16.87 ng/mL for fluorescent assay, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries in the range of 96.40%-104.66% were obtained, indicating the potential of this method for application in complicated real sample. Thereby, this strategy broadens the applications of polydopamine nanomaterials and holds a promising application in determination of pesticide residues.

Residue Analysis and Dietary Risk Assessment of Pymetrozine in Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and Chrysanthemum morifolium (Ramat)

Pymetrozine is used on potato (S. tuberosum) and Chrysanthemum morifolium (C. morifolium) to obtain greater yield and quality. However, pesticide use carries the potential for residues to remain and be detected on harvested crops. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate pesticide residues in S. tuberosum and C. morifolium products that are commercially available for human consumption and to assess the associated dietary risks. For this study, a total of 340 samples (200 S. tuberosum samples and 140 C. morifolium samples) were collected randomly from supermarkets and farmer's markets. Residues of pymetrozine in S. tuberosum and C. morifolium were detected by using an established and validated QuECHERS-HPLC-MS / MS method, while a dietary risk assessment of pymetrozine in S. tuberosum and C. morifolium was performed using these data. The detection rates of pymetrozine in S. tuberosum and C. morifolium samples were 92.31% and 98.17%, respectively, with residues not more than 0.036 and 0.024 mg/kg, respectively. Based on these results, the dietary risk assessment indicated that the intake of pymetrozine residues in S. tuberosum and C. morifolium does not pose a health risk. This work improved our understanding of the potential exposure risk of pymetrozine in S. tuberosum and C. morifolium.

Dithiocarbamates: Properties, Methodological Approaches and Challenges to Their Control

Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) are a group of chemicals used primarily as fungicides, although they are exploited for various other applications. DTCs represent one of the oldest classes of broad-spectrum fungicides employed worldwide to control fungal diseases on many crops. Due to their ease of synthesis, low production costs (cheap and readily available starting materials) and a fungicidal activity with a multi-site mode of action, they are still among modern agriculture's most extensively used pesticides. Although the environmental degradation in air, water, and soil is relatively rapid due to photolysis and/or hydrolysis, they are among the most frequently detected pesticides in the European Union (EU), also with a high frequency of maximum residue level (MRL) exceedances. The current review aims to comprehensively survey all aspects of DTCs, including the environmental fate, toxicity and analytical methods for determining parental compounds and degradation products in environmental and food samples. Furthermore, the accumulation of carbamate and dithiocarbamate pesticides in vegetables, fruits, bioindicator organisms and human biological samples, as well as their health effects on humans, are also considered in this study.

Sensitive and Label-Free Colorimetric Detection of Glyphosate Based on the Suppression Peroxidase-Mimicking Activity of Cu(II) Ions

The sensitive and accurate determination of glyphosate (Glyp) is urgently demanded because it is closely correlated with human health and environmental safety. In this work, we proposed a sensitive and convenient colorimetric assay by employing copper ion peroxidases for the detection of Glyp in the environment. Free Cu(II) ions displayed high peroxidase activity and can catalytically oxidize the colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, resulting in an obviously visible discoloration reaction. Once the Glyp is added, the ability of copper ions to mimic peroxidase can be largely suppressed because of the generation of Glyp-Cu²⁺ chelate. The favorable selectivity and sensitivity were demonstrated in the colorimetric analysis of Glyp. Furthermore, this rapid and sensitive method was successfully applied in the accurate and reliable determination of glyphosate in the real sample, holding promising applications in pesticide determination in the environment.

Chemical decontamination of foods using non-thermal plasma-activated water

The presence of chemical contaminants in foods and agricultural products is one of the major safety issues worldwide, posing a serious concern to human health. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) containing richly reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) has been trialed as a potential decontamination method. Yet, this technology comes with multiple downsides, including adverse effects on the quality of treated foods and limited exposure to entire surfaces on samples with hard-to-reach spots, further hindering real-life applications. Therefore, plasma-activated water (PAW) has been recently developed to facilitate the interactions between RONS and contaminant molecules in the liquid phase, allowing a whole surface treatment with efficient chemical degradation. Here, we review the recent advances in PAW utilized as a chemical decontamination agent in foods. The reaction mechanisms and the main RONS contributors involved in the PAW-assisted removal of chemical contaminants are briefly outlined. Also, the comprehensive effects of these treatments on food qualities (chemical and physical characteristics) and toxicological evaluation of PAW (in vitro and in vivo) are thoroughly discussed. Ultimately, we identified some current challenges and provided relevant suggestions, which can further promote PAW research for real-life applications in the future.

Advances of non-thermal plasma discharge technology in degrading recalcitrant wastewater pollutants. A comprehensive review

With development and urbanization, the amount of wastewater generated due to human activities drastically increases yearly, causing water pollution and intensifying the already worsened water crisis. Although convenient, conventional wastewater treatment methods such as activated sludge, stabilization ponds, and adsorption techniques cannot fully eradicate the complex and recalcitrant contaminants leading to toxic byproducts generation. Recent advancements in wastewater treatment techniques, specifically non-thermal plasma technology, have been extensively investigated for the degradation of complex pollutants in wastewater. Non-thermal plasma is an effective alternative for degrading and augmenting the biodegradability of recalcitrant pollutants due to its ability to generate reactive species in situ. This article critically reviews the non-thermal plasma technology, considering the plasma discharge configuration and reactor types. Furthermore, the influence of operational parameters on the efficiency of the plasma systems and the reactive species generated by the system during discharge has gained significant interest and hence been discussed. Also, the application of non-thermal plasma technology for the degradation of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes and the inactivation of microbial activities are outlined in this review article. Additionally, optimistic applications involving the combination of non-thermal plasma and catalysts and pilot and industrial-scale projects utilizing non-thermal plasma technology have been addressed. Concluding perceptions on the challenges and future perspectives of the non-thermal technology on wastewater treatment are accentuated. Overall, this review outlines a comprehensive understanding of the non-thermal plasma technology for recalcitrant pollutant degradation from a scientific perspective providing detailed instances for reference.

Mediterranean Food Industry By-Products as a Novel Source of Phytochemicals with a Promising Role in Cancer Prevention

The Mediterranean diet is recognized as a sustainable dietary approach with beneficial health effects. This is highly relevant, although the production of typical Mediterranean food, i.e., olive oil or wine, processed tomatoes and pomegranate products, generates significant amounts of waste. Ideally, this waste should be disposed in an appropriate, eco-friendly way. A number of scientific papers were published recently showing that these by-products can be exploited as a valuable source of biologically active components with health benefits, including anticancer effects. In this review, accordingly, we elaborate on such phytochemicals recovered from the food waste generated during the processing of vegetables and fruits, typical of the Mediterranean diet, with a focus on substances with anticancer activity. The molecular mechanisms of these phytochemicals, which might be included in supporting treatment and prevention of various types of cancer, are presented. The use of bioactive components from food waste may improve the economic feasibility and sustainability of the food processing industry in the Mediterranean region and can provide a new strategy to approach prevention of cancer.

Intervention during the Perinatal Period: Synthesis of the Clinical Practice Guidelines from the French National College of Midwives

These clinical practice guidelines from the French National College of Midwives (CNSF) are intended to define the messages and the preventive interventions to be provided to women and co-parents by the different professionals providing care to women or their children during the perinatal period. These guidelines are divided into 10 sections, corresponding to 4 themes: 1/ the adaptation of maternal behaviors (physical activity, psychoactive agents); 2/ dietary behaviors; 3/ household exposure to toxic substances (household uses, cosmetics); 4/ promotion of child health (breastfeeding, attachment and bonding, screen use, sudden unexplained infant death, and shaken baby syndrome). We suggest a ranking to prioritize the different preventive messages for each period, to take into account professionals' time constraints.

A colorimetric smartphone-based platform for pesticides detection using Fe-N/C single-atom nanozyme as oxidase mimetics

In this study, a novel highly sensitive colorimetric platform has been designed for malathion assay based on Fe-N/C SAzyme. The as-synthesized SAzyme can directly oxidize 3,3´,5,5´-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate blue colored oxidized TMB. L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate (AA2P), a substrate of acid phosphatase (ACP), could be hydrolyzed to AA, thereafter inhibit the oxidization reaction of TMB, leading to a conspicuous blue color fading. With the addition of malathion hindered the ACP activity and limited the AA production, resulting in the recovery of the catalytic activity of single-atom nanozyme. Under optimized operational conditions, a novel colorimetric assay has been designed for malathion detection with LOD of 0.42 nM. Besides, quantification of malathion in environmental and food samples was achieved based on the proposed strategy. In addition, the successfully integrated paper/smartphone sensor provided sensitive, and rapid, reliable detection of malathion with a LOD of 1 nM.

Risk assessment of carbofuran residues in fruits and vegetables at the Chinese market: A 7-year survey

The United Nations designated 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV), with the goal of educating populations regarding the role of such produce in nutrition, food safety, and overall health. Carbofuran is a highly toxic insecticide and nematocide, and its use to treat fruit trees, vegetables, tea, and medicinal herbs is thus prohibited. However, carbofuran residues are still detectable via LC-Q-TOF/MS in fruit and vegetable samples collected from 138 sites in 31 regions. In the present study, carbofuran levels were sampled at 1388 sampling sites in 31 regions (provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities) not including Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan. In total, over 36,000 samples (including 12,547 samples of 41 kinds of fruits and 23,785 samples of 83 kinds of vegetables) were randomly collected from supermarkets and farmer's markets. These data were used to conduct a risk assessment pertaining to dietary carbofuran exposure through the consumption of fruits and vegetables. In total, carbofuran residues were detectable in 2.0% of fruits and 2.3% of vegetables. Risk assessments indicated that the intake of fruits and vegetables harboring carbofuran residues did not pose a chronic health risk. However, peaches, grapes, sweet peppers, celery, Chinese chives, leaf lettuce, spinach, small rape, mustard greens, cucumbers, watermelons, Chinese wolfberry leaves, wax gourds, snap beans, bitter melons, green Chinese vegetables, lettuce, shallot, cowpeas, eggplants, tomatoes, tangerines, summer squash, oranges, lemons, Chinese cabbage, peppers, and strawberries were associated with an unacceptable acute risk to both children and adults. Moreover, crown daisies, nectarines, citrus fruits, pitayas, melons, kale, cabbages, milk Chinese cabbage, carrots, and melons were associated with an unacceptable acute risk to children. Substantial acute risk to children and adults was observed for fruits and vegetables from surveyed regions other than Inner Mongolia, Yunnan, Liaoning, Fujian, Xinjiang, and Hubei. Together, these data provide a foundation for future research aimed at the management of carbofuran residues in fruits and vegetables in an effort to better protect consumer health.

Identification of the Causal Agent of Brown Leaf Spot on Kiwifruit and Its Sensitivity to Different Active Ingredients of Biological Fungicides

Kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) is an important commercial crop in China, and the occurrence of diseases may cause significant economic loss in its production. In the present study, a new pathogen that causes brown leaf spot disease on kiwifruit was reported. The fungus was isolated from an infected sample and identified as Fusarium graminearum based on morphological and molecular evaluation. Koch's postulates were confirmed when the pathogen was re-isolated from plants with artificially induced symptoms and identified as F. graminearum. Based on the biological characteristics of the pathogen, it was determined that: its optimal growth temperature was 25 °C; optimal pH was 7; most suitable carbon source was soluble starch; most suitable nitrogen source was yeast powder; and best photoperiod was 12 h light/12 h dark. Further investigations were conducted by determining 50% effective concentrations (EC50) of several active ingredients of biological fungicides against F. graminearum. The results showed that among the studied fungicides, tetramycin and honokiol had the highest antifungal activity against this pathogen. Our findings provide a scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of brown leaf spot disease on kiwifruit.

Efficient Screening of Pesticide Diazinon-Binding Aptamers Using the Sol-Gel-Coated Nanoporous Membrane-Assisted SELEX Process and Next-Generation Sequencing

Aptamer-based methods for detecting pesticides are more efficient than antibody-based methods by high thermal stability, low molecular weight, easy modification, and low cost. In this study, the systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) process, combined with next-generation sequencing (NGS), was performed to select aptamers specific to the pesticide, diazinon, which was fixed on a sol-gel-coated nanoporous-anodized aluminum oxide membrane to overcome the immobilization effect of general method and simplify the elution step. The frequency of specific nucleotide sequences obtained after SELEX rounds was directly analyzed using NGS to eliminate the time-consuming cloning process used in the general SELEX methods. Nine sequences with the highest frequency after SELEX round 10 followed by NGS were selected and tested to derive their binding affinity with the target, diazinon, through circular dichroism (CD) spectrophotometry. The CD signal difference of the aptamer candidates ranged from 0.13 to 2.242 mdeg between diazinon-only treated and diazinon-aptamer-treated samples at a wavelength near 270 nm. Aptamer D-4, which had the highest binding affinity from CD spectrophotometry analysis, showed no cross-reactivity with non-target pesticides, such as baycarb, bifenthrin, and pyridaben, but interacted with the other pesticides, fipronil and 2-phenylphenol. Therefore, an aptamer was effectively screened by selection of high-frequency candidates after SELEX-NGS followed by CD analysis with the highest difference signal. A follow-up study is needed to confirm whether the proposed SELEX process combined with NGS for the discovery of aptamers for new targets can further shorten the SELEX cycle by reducing the number of SELEX rounds to 10 or less.

Root treatment with a vitamin K3 derivative: a promising alternative to synthetic fungicides against Botrytis cinerea in tomato plants

BACKGROUND

Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold has a great economic impact on several important crops. This necrotrophic fungus causes disease symptoms during vegetative growth and also into postharvest stages. The current method to combat this disease is fungicide application, with high economic costs and environmentally unsustainable impacts. Moreover, there is an increasing general public health concern about these strategies of crop protection. We studied the protection of tomato plants against B. cinerea by previous root treatment with menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB), a known plant defense activator.

RESULTS

Root treatment 48 h before inoculation with MSB 0.6 mmol L^-1 reduced leaf lesion diameter by 30% and notably cell deaths, compared to control plants 72 h after inoculation. We studied the expression level of several pathogenesis-related (PR) genes from different defense transduction pathways, and found that MSB primes higher PR1 expression against B. cinerea. However, this stronger induced resistance was impaired in transgenic salicylic acid-deficient NahG line. Additionally, in the absence of pathogen challenge, MSB increased tomato plant growth by 28% after 10 days. Our data provide evidence that MSB protects tomato plants against B. cinerea by priming defense responses through the salicylic acid (SA)-dependent signaling pathway and reducing oxidative stress.

CONCLUSION

This work confirms the efficacy of MSB as plant defense activator against B. cinerea and presents a novel alternative to combat gray mold in important crops.

A Sustainable Alternative for Postharvest Disease Management and Phytopathogens Biocontrol in Fruit: Antagonistic Yeasts

Postharvest diseases of fruits caused by phytopathogens cause losses up to 50% of global production. Phytopathogens control is performed with synthetic fungicides, but the application causes environmental contamination problems and human and animal health in addition to generating resistance. Yeasts are antagonist microorganisms that have been used in the last years as biocontrol agents and in sustainable postharvest disease management in fruits. Yeast application for biocontrol of phytopathogens has been an effective action worldwide. This review explores the sustainable use of yeasts in each continent, the main antagonistic mechanisms towards phytopathogens, their relationship with OMIC sciences, and patents at the world level that involve yeast-based-products for their biocontrol.

Intake of fruits and vegetables by pesticide residue status in relation to cancer risk

BACKGROUND

Conventionally grown fruits and vegetables (FVs) are the main source of general population exposure to pesticide residues.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the relation of intake of high- and low-pesticide-residue FVs with cancer risk.

METHODS

We followed 150,830 women (Nurses' Health Study, 1998-2016, and Nurses' Health Study II, 1999-2017) and 29,486 men (Health Professionals Follow-up Study, 1998-2016) without a history of cancer. We ascertained FV intake via validated food frequency questionnaires and categorized FVs as having high or low pesticide residue levels based on USDA surveillance data. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of total and site-specific cancer related to quintiles of high- and low-pesticide-residue FV intake.

RESULTS

We documented 23,678 incident cancer cases during 2,862,118 person-years of follow-up. In the pooled multivariable analysis, neither high- nor low-pesticide-residue FV intake was associated with cancer. The HRs (95% CI) per 1 serving/day increase in intake were 0.99 (0.97-1.01) for high- and 1.01 (0.99-1.02) for low-pesticide-residue FVs. Additionally, we found no association between high-pesticide-residue FV intake and risk of specific sites, including malignancies previously linked to occupational pesticide exposure ([HR, 95% CI comparing extreme quintiles of intake] lung [1.17 (0.95-1.43)], non-Hodgkin lymphoma [0.89 (0.72-1.09)], prostate [1.31 (0.88-1.93)]) or inversely related to intake of organic foods (breasts [1.03 (0.94-1.31)]).

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that overall exposure to pesticides through FV intake is not related to cancer risk, although they do not rule out associations with specific chemicals or sub-types of specific cancers.

Application of BRAFO-tiered approach for health benefit-risk assessment of dark tea consumption in China

Dark tea, a unique tea fermented primarily in China, has numerous potential beneficial effects. However, harmful substances present in dark tea have provoked significant concern. To conduct a quantitative benefit-risk assessment of dark tea for Chinese residents and provide guidance on rational consumption, a framework of Benefit-Risk Analysis for Foods (BRAFO) and meta-analysis was applied to construct a disability-adjusted life year (DALY). Based on the BRAFO-tiered approach, a reference scenario (no intake) and an alternative scenario (intake of 3 cups/day) were determined. The overall health impacts of dark tea were simulated by comparing the risks of fluoride and AF with benefits of reduced-risk to coronary heart disease (CHD) and diabetes in different scenarios. Three cups of fermented tea consumed per day decreased risks of CHD and diabetes by 8.16% and 12.77% respectively. After quantitative integration of information, the ultimate net health effect was found to be -1958.827 illustrating that the benefits of drinking three cups of dark tea per day outweigh the risks. However, considering the uncertainties in the process, decision-makers should proceed with caution, consulting additional well-conducted studies and further managing harmful substances in dark tea.

Simultaneous determination and risk assessment of highly toxic pesticides in the market-sold vegetables and fruits in China: A 4-year investigational study

This study investigated the levels of highly toxic pesticides (HTPs) in 6554 vegetable and fruit samples from 31 regions of China, along with the associated risk of dietary exposure for the population between 2014 and 2017. 18 HTPs were detected in 325 (4.96%) samples, and the levels of HTPs in 103 (1.57%) samples were found to be higher than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of China. The rate of detection of HTPs in six types of vegetables and fruits, in a decreasing order, was found to be as follows: eggplant (8.84%) >grape (5.58%) >tomato (5.43%) >cucumber (5.43%) >pear (3.12%) >apple (2.30%). The level of contamination of HTPs was found to be higher in vegetables compared with fruits. The vegetable and fruit samples with the highest percentages of HTPs exceeding MRLs were found in eggplants from Guangxi (20%) and grapes from Inner Mongolia (12.5%), respectively. Both, the average target hazard quotient (THQ) of a single highly toxic pesticide (HTP) and the average hazard index (HI) of the mixture of HTPs for adults and children from vegetables and fruits from the 31 regions were found to be less than one. Omethoate, carbofuran, ethoprophos, triazophos, and phorate were identified as the major contributors to the average HI for vegetables, and carbofuran, ethoprophos, omethoate, phorate, and phosphamidon were identified as the primary contributors to the average HI for fruits. The results of this study revealed that HTPs in vegetables and fruits did not cause any significant chronic risk of dietary exposure. The detection of HTPs exceeding MRLs in some of the samples implied that appropriate management guidelines for HTPs should be implemented to protect the health of the consumers.

Evaluation of genoprotection against malathion induced toxicity by Orthosiphon thymiflorus Sleesen

BACKGROUND

Pesticide toxicity is considered to be one of the significant reason for increased incidence of cancer. Plants are treasure troves of active phytochemical compounds which are used as herbal medicine as well as nutraceuticals.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the genoprotective potential of Orthosiphon thymiflorus (Roth) Sleesen, (Lamiaceae) against the toxicity induced by malathion by a battery of four in vivo assays in Swiss albino mice.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Micronucleus assay was performed for analyzing the micronuclei induction and ratio of polychromatic and normochromatic erythrocytes (PCE/NCE). Anticlastogenic and mito depressive effect of the methanol and hexane extracts of O.thymiflorus were evaluated by chromosome aberration assay. Alkali comet assay was performed to assess double strand DNA repair. DNA damage sensing ability of the bone marrow cells were assessed by γ-H2AX foci formation. Phytochemical screening of hexane and methanol extract was done by GC-MS analysis.

RESULT

O. thymiflorus extracts showed a dose dependant protective effect in all assays. It significantly decreased the frequency of micronuclei and improved PCE/NCE value in post treated groups of animals. Malathion induced clastogenic aberrations were effectively attenuated by methanol and hexane extracts. DNA comet assay showed that malathion induced damage can be protected by O. thymiflorus extracts. Multiple foci formation in γ-H2AX assay confirmed the activation of DNA repair proteins in post treated animals.

CONCLUSION

Genoprotective effect of O. thymiflorus against malathion induced toxicity was confirmed. This study would be helpful to initiate more research including clinical using O. thymiflorus extract against pesticide induced toxicity.

Cold plasma for mitigating agrochemical and pesticide residue in food and water: Similarities with ozone and ultraviolet technologies

Pesticide and agrochemical residues in food and water are among hazardous chemicals that are associated with adverse health effects. Consequently, technologies for pesticide abatement in food and water remain in focus. Cold plasma is an emerging decontamination technology, that is being increasingly explored for the abatement of agrochemical and pesticide residue in food and water. In some cases, rapid and complete degradation of pesticide residues has come to light. Such promising results encourage exploring scale-up and commercialization. To achieve this, unraveling mechanisms involved in plasma decontamination and the nature of degradation products is needed. The present review identifies the mechanisms involved in plasma- assisted removal of pesticide residues from food and water, draws parallels with mechanism of ozone and ultraviolet technologies, investigates the chemistry of the intermediates and degradates, and identifies some future research needs. The review recognizes that mechanisms involved in plasma processes have overlapping similarities to those identified for ozone and ultraviolet light, involving oxidation by hydroxyl radical and photo-oxidation. The toxicity of intermediates and degradates in plasma processing have not received much attention. The safety aspects of end products form plasma led degradation of pesticides should be considered for practical exploitation. Identification of intermediates and degradation products, recognition of most potent plasma species, understanding the influence of co-existing entities, the energy efficiency of plasma reactors, and the process economics deserve research focus.

The association between toxic pesticide environmental exposure and Alzheimer's disease: A scientometric and visualization analysis

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases. The association between environmental factors (e.g., pesticide) and AD has attracted considerable attention. However, no systematic analysis has been performed and make it difficult to provide deeper insights of AD correlated with pesticide exposure. Hence, this study utilized a bibliometric and visual approach that included map collaborations, co-citations, and keywords, to identifying the knowledge structure, hot topics and the research trends based on 372 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed databases. The results showed that 116 institutions from 52 countries published articles in this field. The United States and Israel played a leading role with numerous publications in related journals, as well as prolific institutions and authors, respectively. Three hot topics in pesticide-induced AD were recognized based on co-occurrence keywords detection, including acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, oxidative stress, and AChE. Moreover, analysis of keywords burst suggests that some potential molecular mechanisms and therapy targets of pesticide-induced AD, especially for mitochondrial dysfunction and monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) that catalyzes the oxidative deamination and causes oxidative stress, are emerging trends. In addition, the study of various pesticides and the assessment method of pesticide exposure will step forward as well. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to specifically visualize the relationship between AD and pesticide exposure and to predict potential future research directions.

RNAi-mediated mortality in southern green stinkbug Nezara viridula by oral delivery of dsRNA

BACKGROUND

The southern green stinkbug, Nezara viridula (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an important emerging polyphagous pest infesting soybean in the United States, Brazil and Argentina. The indiscriminate use of synthetic insecticides to control stinkbugs has limited the effectiveness of current management strategies. Alternatively, RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a novel mode of action to control pests in an eco-friendly manner.

RESULTS

Here, we assessed the potential of RNAi technology by oral delivery of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) for the control of N. viridula. Initially, ten candidate genes were tested by microinjection assay to select the best target genes for oral delivery. Seven genes resulted in more than 90% mortality after microinjection. To evaluate RNAi efficacy by oral delivery of dsRNA, five genes were tested by feeding the insects on gene-specific dsRNA mixed with an artificial diet. Significant mortality of 43% and 45% was observed after 14 days of treatment with dsαCop and dsvATPase A, respectively. To elucidate the lower RNAi efficacy via oral delivery of dsRNA, ex vivo dsRNA degradation in the saliva and the midgut juice was performed, which indicated that the reduced RNAi efficacy is accompanied by a rapid degradation of dsRNA by digestive secretions.

CONCLUSION

This study proves that RNAi can be triggered by orally delivered dsRNA in N. viridula and can be exploited to control this economically important pest. The reduced stability of dsRNA in saliva and midgut that was observed indicates a need to further improve RNAi efficacy, for example by use of specific formulations.

Food Safety Implications of Transitions Toward Sustainable Healthy Diets

Despite increased political attention, foodborne diseases still cause a substantial public health, economic, and social burden worldwide. Children younger than 5 years, people living in developing regions, and in the poorest areas of the world are disproportionally affected, bearing a large proportion of the global burden of foodborne disease. Yet, food safety is a prerequisite to ensuring food security globally: Foods that are responsible for important food safety problems are also crucial to ensure food security in some regions and are essential sources of nutrition. Moreover, together with calls for action to meeting international sustainable development goals, global efforts to promote food security and healthy diets have now highlighted the need to modify food systems globally. This article therefore explores the food safety dimensions of transitions toward food systems that promote sustainable healthy diets. The current body of evidence points to the combined health and environmental benefits of shifting toward a more plant-based diet, including vegetables and fruits, nuts, pulses, and whole grains. As a shift toward more plant-based diets may also lead to higher exposures to chemicals or pathogens present in these foods, an evaluation of food safety implications of such transitions is now imperative. We conclude that several synergies between public health, environmental, and food safety strategies can be identified to support dietary transitions.

Determination of common organophosphorus pesticides in the blood of children with acute leukaemia using a double-solvent system as a novel extractant for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction

In this research, a new mode of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on a double-solvent system (DLLME-DSS) was developed for the extraction and preconcentration of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in the blood of children with acute leukaemia prior to determination by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). In the present method, two long normal chain alcohols are mixed in a particular ratio, and then injected into the sample solution, which is magnetically stirred. In this case, the mixture of the two alcohols changes to a new aggregate extractant. This new double-solvent is used as an extractant, which has a higher extraction power than any of its components alone. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration graph was linear in the rage of 3-600 μg L-1 with detection limits of 1 to 2 μg L-1. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) including intra-day and inter-day of the method based on 7 replicate determinations of 100.0 μg L-1 for each analyte were in the range of 2.9-4.7% and 3.8-6.1%, respectively. The results proved that DLLME-DSS is a sensitive, very simple, inexpensive, environmentally friendly, rapid and efficient method for the preconcentration of trace amounts of OPPs in blood samples.

Challenge of Utilization Vegetal Extracts as Natural Plant Protection Products

Natural plant protection products (known as biopesticides), derived from natural materials (plants, bacterial strains, and certain minerals) that can be used to control pests, are an alternative to plant protection chemicals (known as pesticides) due to certain advantages: less toxic to humans and the environment, no release/leaching of harmful residues, and usually much specific to the target pests. This review focuses on the systematization of information highlighting the main advantages related to the natural plant protection products used, the extractive methods of obtaining them, their physical-chemical analysis methodology, the specific constituents responsible for their pesticide effects, the mechanisms of action, and methods for direct application on vegetable crops or on seeds stored in warehouses, in order to eliminate the adverse effects occurred in the case of plant protection chemicals use. Special attention has been accorded to natural plant protection products from the spontaneous flora of Moldova (Romania’s macroeconomic region NE), which can be considered a resource of valuable secondary metabolites, especially in the form of vegetable essential oils, with biological effects and biopesticide routes of action. All presented information concludes that biopesticides can successfully replace the chemical plant protection products on small farms and especially in silos (seeds and cereals).

Modelling of Health Risk Associated with the Intake of Pesticides from Romanian Fruits and Vegetables

This study is focused on the assessment of risks caused by pesticide residues to Romanian and other European populations, by modelling the acute and chronic risks considering short- and long-term exposures to pesticide residues in specific fruits and vegetables from different Romanian regions. Data were obtained from the Romanian 2016 official monitoring programme. For assessing the dietary risk, we used the Pesticide Residue Intake model—PRIMo. According to the official data, it was found that 50.44% of fruit samples and 28.25% of vegetable samples were contaminated with pesticides. Our study focused on acute risks and chronic risks (in a maximalist worst-case scenario) posed by pesticide residues in strawberries, apples, lettuce and potatoes, given both their high degree of consumption and contamination with pesticides. The short-term exposure assessment of children’s health due to consumption of apples, lettuce and potatoes contaminated with dimethoate, chlorothalonil and carbendazim, revealed exposure levels higher than the acute reference dose (ARfD, as 100%), raising acute risks. On the other hand, the long-term exposure assessment showed that the highest percentage from the acceptable daily intake (ADI, as 100%) was obtained for German children (DE child) (273.9%), followed by Netherlands children (NL child) (143.7%) diets, based on consumption of apples with dimethoate residues. Therefore, serious measures are needed for banning pesticides such as dimethoate, chlorothalonil and carbendazim from all countries in the EU. This would reduce the health risks generated by the consumption of contaminated fruits and vegetables.

Application of ultrasonic technology in postharvested fruits and vegetables storage: A review

It has been an important research topic and a serious applicable issue to extend storage time of fruits and vegetables using advanced scientific and effective technology. Among various approaches, ultrasound has been regarded as one of the most pollution-free and effective technical means to significantly improve the preservation of fruits and vegetables. This paper summarizes the application of ultrasonic technology in fruits and vegetables storage in recent years, including removal of pesticide residues and cleaning, sterilization, enzyme inactivation, effect on physico-chemical indexes. Additionally, we also discussed limitations and negative effects of ultrasonic treatment on fruits and vegetables such as damages to tissues and cells. Furthermore, a proper application of ultrasonic technology has been proven to effectively extend the storage period of postharvest fruits and vegetables and maintain the quality. Moreover, the combination of ultrasound and other conventional preservation technologies can further improve the preservation in a coordinate manner and even have a broader application prospect.

Employing a fluorescent and colorimetric picolyl-functionalized rhodamine for the detection of glyphosate pesticide

The ongoing poisoning of agricultural products has pushed the security problem to become an important issue. Among them, exceeding the standard rate of pesticide residues is the main factor influencing the quality and security of agricultural products. Monitoring pesticide residues and developing simple, yet ultrasensitive detection systems for pesticide residues are urgently needed. In this study, we successfully developed a novel rhodamine derivative as fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor R-G for the rapid, selective and ultrasensitive detection of glyphosate pesticide residue in aqueous solution. Through a Cu²⁺-indicator displacement strategy, glyphosate can displace an indicator (R-G) from a Cu²⁺-indicator complex due to its strong affinity to bind with Cu²⁺ to give a turn-on fluorescence and distinct color change. Moreover, a test strip was also fabricated to achieve a facile detection of glyphosate pesticide. To demonstrate the possibility of practical applications, glyphosate was detected on the surface of cabbage and in a spiked soil sample. The detection limit of 4.1 nM and the response time of 2 min indicate that the method is enough sensitive and rapid to detect the glyphosate residue at or below levels that pose a health risk.

Evaluation of Chemical and Microbiological Contaminants in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables from Peasant Markets in Cundinamarca, Colombia

ABSTRACT

In this study, chemical and microbiological contaminants were detected in fresh fruits and vegetables in peasant markets in the Department of Cundinamarca to assess food safety. At least one pesticide was detected in 63% of the samples evaluated (n = 100, including fruits and vegetables), and in 41% of these, pesticides exceeded the maximum residue limit. Within the pesticides found, 60% do not use a registry from the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario to be applied on the crops where they were detected and are included in the toxicological categories "highly toxic" (category IB) and "moderately toxic" (category II). Heavy metals were found in 45% of the samples, with cadmium (38%) and lead (14%) being the most frequent. The pathogenic microorganisms Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and Campylobacter sp. were detected in 4, 2, 1, and 0% of the samples, respectively. Factors concerning integrated crop management, contaminated inputs with chemicals and microorganisms, and the lack of hygiene in the postharvest stage favor the presence of pesticide residues, heavy metals, and the appearance of pathogenic microorganisms. The results suggest the need to strengthen the implementation of integrated management strategies that guarantee the safety of fresh fruits and vegetables in the country.

HIGHLIGHTS

Estimated dietary pesticide exposure from plant-based foods using NMF-derived profiles in a large sample of French adults

PURPOSE

This study, conducted in participants of the NutriNet-Santé cohort, aims to identify dietary pesticide exposure profiles (derived from Non-negative Matrix Factorization) from conventional and organic foods among a large sample of general population French adults.

METHODS

Organic and conventional dietary intakes were assessed using a self-administered semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Exposure to 25 commonly used pesticides was evaluated using food contamination data from Chemisches und Veterinäruntersuchungsamt Stuttgart accounting for farming system (organic or conventional). Dietary pesticide exposure profiles were identified using Non-Negative Matrix factorization (NMF), especially adapted for non-negative data with excess zeros. The NMF scores were introduced in a hierarchical clustering process.

RESULTS

Overall, the identified clusters (N = 34,193) seemed to be exposed to the same compounds with gradual intensity. Cluster 1 displayed the lowest energy intake and estimated dietary pesticide exposure, high organic food (OF) consumption (23.3%) and a higher proportion of male participants than other groups. Clusters 2 and 5 presented intermediate energy intake, lower OF consumption and intermediate estimated pesticide exposure. Cluster 3 showed high conventional fruits and vegetable (FV) intake, high estimated pesticide exposure, and fewer smokers. Cluster 4 estimated pesticide exposure varied more across compounds than for other clusters, with highest estimated exposures for acetamiprid, azadirachtin, cypermethrin, pyrethrins, spinosad. OF proportion in the diet was the highest (31.5%).

CONCLUSION

Estimated dietary pesticide exposures appeared to vary across the clusters and to be related to OF proportion in the diet.

Risk-based principles and incompleteness theorems for linear dose-response extrapolation for carcinogenic chemicals

To conduct better health risk assessments, this study introduced two risk-based principles and a series of line-lognormal-intersection theorems that helped derive the safe ranges of the cancer slope factors (CSFs) for 708 carcinogenic chemicals. The extrapolated linear dose-response relationships presented in this study can ensure safety with respect to both static and dose-based instantaneous risks compared to the lognormal dose-response model. The theorems proved that the maximum static and dose-based hazard risk ratios of a lognormal curve and a linear model are independent of a chemical's toxicity (the effect dose that corresponds to a 50% response, or ED₅₀), where the selected linear extrapolation (m value) and the individual variability (σ) of the responses to carcinogenic chemicals are two determining factors. The theorems also indicated that individual variability determines the range of m if the acceptable risk ratios were regulated. When σ was 1.36 (i.e., the 50th percentile of the individual variability's lognormal distribution), the safe range of m was derived as [11.22, 21.46] (i.e., from ED_11.22 to ED_21.46); if the 95th percentile of the σ lognormal distribution was used, the safe range of m was [1.13, 4.57] (i.e., from ED_1.13 to ED_4.57). This study also showed that for a relatively homogenous population (i.e., σ is relatively small) that has similar characteristics, the linear dose-response extrapolation method might not be completely effective due to the shape shift of the lognormal curve that draws the static risk of the extrapolated linear model away from the lognormal model.

Structure-based Identification of Endocrine Disrupting Pesticides Targeting Breast Cancer Proteins

Endocrine disrupting pesticides (EDPs) are exogenous compounds that disrupt endocrine activity. Human exposure to EDPs can occur through occupational contact, and through the consumption of food, milk and water with trace amounts of these pollutants. Several EDPs are epidemiologically linked to breast cancer or are considered as possible carcinogens. However, current evidence is not fully conclusive and their mechanisms of action remain unknown. Thus, the potential interactions between 262 EDPs and 189 proteins associated with breast cancer were evaluated by using a virtual high-throughput screening approach, with AutoDock Vina 1.1.1. The molecular coordinates were previously downloaded from Protein Data Bank and EDCs DataBank, and used for preparation and optimization in Sybyl X-2.0. The best affinity score (-11.0 kcal/mol) was obtained for flucythrinate with the nuclear receptor for vitamin D (VDR). This synthetic pyrethroid, along with other EDPs, such as fluvalinate, bifenthrin, cyhalothrin and cypermethrin, are proposed as multi-target ligands of several proteins related to breast cancer. In addition, the validation of our protocol showed a good accuracy in terms of binding pose prediction and affinity estimation. This study provides a guide to prioritize EDPs for which further in vitro and in vivo analysis could be done to evaluate the risk and possible mechanisms of action of these contaminants and their potential association with breast cancer.

Optical sensor film for metribuzin pesticide detection

We present a new ratiometric and colorimetric optical sensor film for detection one of the most prevalent pesticide metribuzin. The detection proceeds within the low concentration range between 0 and 1.5 μM. The optical film is based on (a) near infrared (NIR) dye 2-[2-[2-Chloro-3-[2-[1,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-1-(4-sulfobutyl)-2H-indol-2-ylidene]-ethylidene]-1-cyclopen-ten-1-yl]-eth-enyl]-3,3-di-methyl-1-(4-sulfobutyl)-3H-indolium hydroxide and (b) upconverting nanoparticles UCNPs of the NaYF₄:Yb,Er type (diameter ~40-100 nm) that can be emitted a dual (green and red) emission under 980 nm laser diode excitation. Commercially available polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was utilized as a homogeneous matrix for immobilizing NIR dye and UCNPs. The color of the NIR dye in the PVC matrix is based on the concentration of the metribuzin. When the sensor film is exposed to metribuzin the color changes from green to blue with a significant blue shift in the absorption peak (656 nm) of the NIR dye. Furthermore, the quenching of the red emission (659 nm) of the UCNPs is proceeded due to an inner filter effect. Thus, increasing the metribuzin concentration causes the red emission of UCNPs to be reduced. Conversely, the green emission (545 nm) of the UCNPs persists uninfluenced by metribuzin and can act as a reference signal. This optical sensor film provides great sensitivity based on their unique luminescence properties of UCNPs and recognition abilities within a very low detection limit for the metribuzin LOD 6.8 × 10^-8 M with a linear range of 0.23 to 1.5 μM and a relative standard deviation RSD_r (1%, n = 3). The novel optical sensor was applied to the detection of metribuzin in real water samples (surface and ground waters). The sensor film exhibits great selectivity in presence of different types of ions and pesticide molecules. But, atrazine pesticide interferes the analytical signal of the sensor film due to the presence of reactive amino groups in its structure. Memorably, we report the first optical chemical sensor film based on polymer film for metribuzin detection.

Specific detection and discrimination of dithiocarbamates using CTAB-encapsulated fluorescent copper nanoclusters

The continuous increase of annual dithiocarbamates consumption and a severe underestimation of ditihocarbamates threats urge the establishment of monitoring network for dithiocarbamates residue based on neoteric facile, rapid, inexpensive and applicable detection method. Current rapid detection methods based on enzyme or Au/Ag nanoparticles suffer either from low sensitivity or from poor selectivity, greatly limiting their practical applications. In this work, a paper-based versatile chemosensor based on CTAB-encapsulated fluorescent cooper nanocluster was developed for the specific detection and discrimination of dithiocarbamates. The as-synthesized cooper nanoclusters were investigated highly sensitive and selective to dithiocarbamates both in colorimetric and fluorometric detecting channel. In addition, the as-fabricated sensor can be used to evaluate total amounts of dithiocarbamates, even for real samples. By integrating colorimetry and fluorometry, a binary concentration-based optical electronic tongue was established for the discrimination of different dithiocarbamates.

Annual changes in concentrations and health risks of PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs and organochlorine pesticides in ambient air based on the Global Monitoring Plan in São Paulo

Ambient air contains a number of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), to which inhalation exposure has drawn worldwide concern. However, information regarding annual changes in the concentrations and health risks of POPs in the ambient air of São Paulo, Brazil, are limited. This study provides comprehensive information on annual changes in polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs), and 10 groups of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the ambient air of São Paulo between 2010 and 2015 based on the Global Monitoring Plan. The mass concentrations of the studied POPs (PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs, and OCPs) showed declining trends from 2010 to 2015 (from 2.65 × 10^-2 to 1.33 × 10^-2 pg m^-3, from 9.89 × 10^-2 to 3.12 × 10^-2 pg m^-3, and from 0.313 to 0.100 ng m^-3, respectively), which might be due to the decrease of non-intentional emissions. The carcinogenic risk (CR) and non-carcinogenic risk (Non-CR) of the studied POPs were 1.48 × 10^-11 to 6.08 × 10^-7 and 3.44 × 10^-8 to 3.34 × 10^-3, respectively, which are lower than the generally accepted threshold values (10^-6/10^-5 and 1 for CR and Non-CR, respectively), suggesting that the health risks posed by the studied POPs were acceptable. PCDD/Fs had the highest CR (6.08 × 10^-8-4.81 × 10^-7), whereas the 95th percentile CR of DL-PCBs and nine of the OCPs were lower than 10^-7, suggesting that among the studied POPs, PCDD/Fs in the ambient air warrant special attention. The 95th percentile CRs of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (2.30 × 10^-8), dieldrin (1.30 × 10^-8), hexachlorocyclohexanes (1.05 × 10^-8), heptachlor (8.97 × 10^-9), hexachlorobenzene (6.47 × 10^-9), chlordane (5.89 × 10^-9), heptachlor epoxide (1.42 × 10^-9), aldrin (1.33 × 10^-9), and mirex (2.71 × 10^-10) in ambient air were relatively low, suggesting that their threats to human health were negligible. In general, PCDD/Fs, DL-PCBs, and OCPs in the ambient air of São Paulo did not pose serious threats to human health during 2010-2015.

Performance enhancement and sample throughput increase of a multiresidue pesticides method in fruits and vegetables using Data-Dependent MS acquisition

Due to the growing number of analysed pesticide residues, analytical strategies have evolved for the data processing of 100s of pesticides in a single analysis. We present herein a LC-MS/MS method based on triple quadrupole technology capable of detecting concentrations at 5 ng/g and confirming 381 pesticides in a single injection. Confirmatory analysis is performed using data-dependent acquisition that compares full MS/MS spectra of candidates to a fast library interrogation within the same injection. A comparison on more than 200 samples of fruits and vegetables (representing principal types: normal, pigmented, and fatty) with pre-existing workflow based on single MRM analysis per compound was performed to validate this approach. A fast turnaround time was demonstrated due to more-unambiguous identification suppressing the need for reinjection to confirm candidates. The automated library searching and confirmation only of putative hits also allowed focusing on the manual verification and validation steps just for putative candidates which hence also increased overall throughput and results quality. Superior robustness of the method due partially to a reduced volume injected was also one of the key points achieved using this methodology. An interesting feature is also the capability to enrich the library and the number of pesticides screened with ease.

High Incidence of Moderately Reduced Renal Function and Lead Bioaccumulation in Agricultural Workers in Assin South District, Ghana: A Community-Based Case-Control Study

Background

The quest to enhance agricultural productivity and crop yields has led to increased use of agrochemicals on a global scale. Long-term use of these agrochemicals may be associated with adverse health implications.

Objective

To assess haematological indices, renal function, heavy metal bioaccumulation in farmers and sprayers, and their use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Materials and Methods

This community-based case-control study was conducted from January 2018 to June 2018 in the Assin South District, Central Region, Ghana. A total of 144 participants were conveniently sampled: 83 agricultural workers (cases) and 61 indigenes with no direct exposure to agrochemicals (controls). Structured questionnaire was used to obtain demographic data as well as agricultural work practices followed by cases. Venous blood samples were drawn from participants and used for estimating full blood count and renal function (serum creatinine (CRE), blood-urea nitrogen (BUN), BUN : CRE ratio, and estimated GFR (eGFR)). Serum lead, arsenic, and cadmium levels were estimated using the Varian AA 240FS atomic spectrometer in an acetylene-air flame.

Results

The median RBC (4.49 vs. 4.92 × 10¹²/L), haemoglobin (12.50 vs. 13.70 g/dL), and platelet (220.00 vs. 268.00) counts were significantly lower in cases. A significantly higher proportion of cases were classified as anaemic or having microcytic cells compared to controls. Also, serum urea (4.08 vs. 3.41; p=0.0009), creatinine (108.10 vs. 101.10; p=0.0286), and BUN : CRE ratio (19.75 vs. 17.84) were significantly higher in cases. Additionally, 18.1% of cases were classified as having moderately reduced renal function compared to only 6.6% of controls. Moreover, a significantly higher proportion of cases had detectable serum lead (55.6% vs. 16.4%) and arsenic (53.1% vs. 9.8%) levels compared to controls. However, on average, 80% of agricultural workers did not use personal protective equipment (PPE) when applying agrochemicals; 84.3% of used agrochemical containments were discarded near the river/canal.

Conclusion

Neglect of the use of PPE may be predisposing the agrochemical workers and community to lead and arsenic bioaccumulation with a consequent reduced haematological and renal function.

Curcumin Induces Oxidative Stress in Botrytis cinerea, Resulting in a Reduction in Gray Mold Decay in Kiwifruit

Curcumin exhibits efficient antimicrobial activity; nevertheless, its effect on the postharvest decay of fruit has not been examined. Here, effects of curcumin on the fruit gray mold of kiwifruit infected by Botrytis cinerea were analyzed. Results demonstrated that curcumin induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and triggered apoptosis in B. cinerea hyphae. Use of N-acetylcysteine, a ROS scavenger, partially ameliorated the inhibition of curcumin on B. cinerea. The NADPH oxidase inhibitor, diphenyleneiodonium chlorine, abrogated the ROS production induced by curcumin, suggesting that curcumin induces oxidative stress in B. cinerea via a NADPH-oxidase-dependent mechanism. Disease severity of gray mold in curcumin-treated kiwifruit was significantly reduced. The malondialdehyde content decreased while the antioxidant enzyme activity increased in kiwifruit with the application of increasing concentrations of curcumin. Collectively, these results indicate that curcumin can be used to control gray mold and elevate antioxidant activity in kiwifruit.
