Concentrations and origins of nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxy-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient air in urban and rural areas in northern China

Temporal trends of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils amended with sludge, compost, and manure in a Scotland pasture: An 8-year field experiment

To optimize the effective utilization of organic waste in agricultural practices, a comprehensive assessment of associated risks and benefits is crucial. This study investigated the impact of three types of organic wastes (sludge, compost, and manure) on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil in a Scottish pasture. The experimental setup comprised 16 plots with four treatments (compost, manure, sludge, and inorganic fertilizer) and four replicates. After eight years of this study, notable disparities in ΣPAH16 concentrations were observed among the different treatments, with compost-amended soil at 378 μg kg-1, sludge-amended soil at 331 μg kg-1, and manure-amended soil at 223 μg kg-1. The concentrations of ΣPAH16 in soil amended with compost and sludge exhibited a linear increase with extended sampling time. Significant changes in ΣPAH16 concentration were evident in the compost treatment plot, with an increase of 20% in the first year and 82% in the eighth year. Risk assessment suggested a low level of health risk from exposure to PAHs at the measured concentrations in the three organic wastes. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of considering the effects of organic waste amendments on soil PAH levels to make informed decisions in sustainable agricultural practices. It also underscores the need for ongoing research to fully understand the implications of different organic waste applications on soil health and environmental quality.

Distribution, sources and ecological risks of PAHs and n-alkanes in water and sediments of typically polluted estuaries: Insights from the Xiaoqing River

Seasonal water and sediment samples were collected from the Xiaoqing River estuary and the neighboring sea to study the spatial and temporal distributions, sources and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes. The results showed significant spatial and temporal differences in the concentrations of PAHs and n-alkanes under the influence of precipitation, temperature, and human activities. The concentrations of PAHs in water were lower in the wet season than in the dry season, and those in sediments were higher in the wet season than in the dry season. The concentrations of n-alkanes were higher in the rainy season than in the dry season for both water and sediments. The spatial distributions of PAHs and n-alkanes were estuarine > offshore. The concentration ranges of ∑PAHs in water and sediments were 230.66-599.86 ng/L and 84.51-5548.62 ng/g, respectively, in the wet season and 192.46-8649.55 ng/L and 23.39-1208.92 ng/g, respectively, in the dry season. The proportion of three-ring PAHs in water (57.03% and 78.27% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively) was high, followed by two-ring PAHs (27.31% and 13.59% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively). The proportion of four-ring PAHs was higher in sediments (24.79% and 32.20% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively). The ecological risk of PAHs assessed using the toxicity equivalent quotient and risk quotient was at moderate to moderately high risk levels. The high concentration of n-alkane fraction C16 (611.65-75594.58 ng/L) in the water is indicative of petroleum or other fossil fuel inputs. The main peaks of n-alkanes in river sediments were C27, C29 and C31, indicating higher inputs of plant sources. The sediments in the estuary showed dominance of both short-chain C16 and long-chain C25-C31, indicating a combined input of higher plants and petroleum. The diagnostic ratios of PAHs and n-alkanes indicated that their sources were mainly oil/coal/biomass combustion and petroleum spills attributed to frequent vehicular, vessel and mariculture activities. Given the potential ecological risks of PAHs and n-alkanes in water and sediments, future studies should focus on their bioaccumulation and biotoxicity.

Secondary formation of oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic compounds under stagnant weather conditions: Drivers and seasonal variation

Severe air pollution tends to occur under stagnant weather conditions. This study focused on the occurrence and formation of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) under stagnant weather conditions, in consideration of their adverse human health effect and ecological toxicity. The concentrations of PACs were higher under stagnant weather conditions than in other situations with averaged values of 46.0 ng/m3 versus 12.3-39.9 ng/m3 for total PACs. Secondary formation contributed to over half of the oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic compounds (OPAHs and NPAHs). Further analyses revealed different formation mechanisms for secondary OPAHs and NPAHs. Secondary production of OPAHs was sensitive to the variations of both temperature (T) and O3 concentration at T < 22 °C but sustained at a high level despite the fluctuation of temperature and O3 concentration at T > 22 °C. Elevated NO2 concentrations favored the formation of inorganic nitrogen-containing products over NPAHs under lower temperature and higher humidity. Stagnant weather events, accompanied by raised PAC levels occurred in all seasons, but their effects on secondary processes differed among seasons. The elevated temperature, lowered humidity, and increased NO2 level facilitated the secondary formation of OPAHs and/or NPAHs during the stagnant weather events in spring and summer. While under the temperature and humidity conditions in autumn and winter, increased NO2 levels during stagnant weather events promoted the production of secondary inorganic nitrogen-containing compounds over organic products. This study raised concern about the toxic organic pollutants in the atmosphere under stagnant weather conditions and revealed different formation mechanisms between secondary oxygenated and nitrated pollutants as well as among different seasons.

Nitro-PAHs: Occurrences, ecological consequences, and remediation strategies for environmental restoration

Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) are persistent pollutants that have been introduced into the environment as a result of human activities. They are produced when PAHs undergo oxidation and are highly resistant to degradation, resulting in prolonged exposure and significant health risks for wildlife and humans. Nitro-PAHs' potential to induce cancer and mutations has raised concerns about their harmful effects. Furthermore, their ability to accumulate in the food chain seriously threatens the ecosystem and human health. Moreover, nitro-PAHs can disrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system, leading to reproductive and developmental problems in humans and other organisms. Reducing nitro-PAHs in the environment through source management, physical removal, and chemical treatment is essential to mitigate the associated environmental and human health risks. Recent studies have focused on improving nitro-PAHs' phytoremediation by incorporating microorganisms and biostimulants. Microbes can break down nitro-PAHs into less harmful substances, while biostimulants can enhance plant growth and metabolic activity. By combining these elements, the effectiveness of phytoremediation for nitro-PAHs can be increased. This study aimed to investigate the impact of introducing microbial and biostimulant agents on the phytoremediation process for nitro-PAHs and identify potential solutions for addressing the environmental risks associated with these pollutants.

Influence of oil extraction on concentration distributions, migration, secondary formation and carcinogenic risk of NPAHs and OPAHs in air and soil in an oilfield development area in China

Oil extraction leads to environmental pollution from the oilfields and dweller activities, however, knowledge of the concentration distributions, migration, secondary formation and toxicity of nitrated/oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N/OPAHs) in oilfield regions is limited. In this research, atmospheric and soil samples in 7 different location types in an important oil industrial base in China were gathered. The ΣNPAHs and ΣOPAHs in the air ranged from 0.05 to 2.47 ng/m3 and 0.14-22.72 ng/m3, respectively, and in soil ranged from 0.22 to 17.81 ng/g and 9.69-66.86 ng/g, respectively. Both NPAHs and OPAHs in the atmosphere exhibited higher concentrations during winter. The atmospheric NPAH concentrations decreased exponentially with distance from urban area especially in the summer, revealing the impact of vehicles on the air in the Yellow River Delta area. High NPAH and OPAH concentrations were found only in soil near oil extraction facilities, indicating that the impact of oil extraction is limited to the soil near the extraction facilities. The air-soil exchanges of N/OPAHs were assessed through fugacity fraction analysis, and NPAHs were in the equilibrium-deposition state and OPAHs were in the net-deposition state in the winter. Higher incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) occurred at the urban, industrial, and oilfield sites in the atmospheric samples, and the soil samples had the largest ILCR values in the oilfield sites. However, ILCR values for both air and soil did not exceed the threshold of 10-6.

Air-soil cycling of oxygenated, nitrated and parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in source and receptor areas

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygenated and nitrated derivatives, OPAHs and NPAHs, are semivolatile air pollutants which are distributed and cycling regionally. Subsequent to atmospheric deposition to and accumulation in soils they may re-volatilise, a secondary source which is understudied. We studied the direction of air-soil mass exchange fluxes of 12 OPAHs, 17 NPAHs, 25 PAHs and one alkylated PAH in two rural environments being influenced by the pollutant concentrations in soil and air, by season, and by land cover. The OPAHs and NPAHs in samples of topsoil, of ambient air particulate and gas phases and in the gas-phase equilibrated with soil were analysed by GC-APCI-MS/MS. The pollutants soil burdens show a pronounced seasonality, a winter maximum for NPAHs and PAHs and a summer maximum for OPAHs. One order of magnitude more OPAH and parent PAH are found stored in forest soil than in nearby grassland soil. Among a number of 3-4 ring PAHs, the OPAHs benzanthrone and 6H-benzo(c,d)pyren-6-one, and the NPAHs 1- and 2-nitronaphthalene, 9-nitrophenanthrene and 7-nitrobenz(a)anthracene are found to re-volatilise from soils at a rural background site in central Europe in summer. At a receptor site in northern Europe, net deposition of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) prevails and re-volatilisation occurs only sporadic. Re-volatilisation of a number of PACs, including strong mutagens, from soils in summer and even in winter indicates that long-range atmospheric transport of primary PAC emissions from central Europe to receptor areas might be enhanced by secondary emissions from soils.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in industrial soils from northwestern of China: occurrence, distribution, exposure risk, and implications on risk-based controls

Some Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds (PACs) such as nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs), oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) and methyl-PAHs (MPAHs) have attracted significant concern due to derivatives have greater potential to be more toxic at low environmental concentrations compared to their PPAHs, particularly in petrochemical industrial region and its surrounding areas surface soils in China. Hence, this article provides an insight into the fate, sources, impacts, and relevance to the external environment of PAH-derivatives based on important emissions source. Moreover, prospective health risk due to their exposure has also been discussed. In this study, the concentration (10-3 ng/g) of Ʃ18PPAHs, Ʃ11MPAHs, Ʃ12NPAHs, and Ʃ4OPAHs in the park were 9.67 ± 1.40, 3.24 ± 0.54, 0.03 ± 0.02 and 0.19 ± 0.65, respectively, which were 4.47, 3.89, 2.04 and 1.17 times than of them surrounding the region. A decreasing trend of the low molecular weight (2-4Rings) contribution to the total amount of PAHs, while the fraction of high molecular weight (5-6Rings) species showed the opposite trend. According to the principal component analysis (PCA) and diagnostic ratios indicated PAHs in the soil samples have mixed sources from industrial activities, solid fuel combustion, and heavy traffic. Despite the high concentrations of MPAHs and OPAHs, the toxicity equivalency quotients (TEQs) of them were not calculated due to the lack of toxic equivalent factors (TEF), thus current studies on PAH and derivatives could have underestimated their exposure risks. The quality and sustainable management of soils are crucial for human health and sustainable development, while there is lack of public awareness of the severe issue of soil pollution. It is recommended to conduct more intensive monitoring and regional assessments in the future.

Emissions of nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons bound to coarse particles from solid fuel combustion

Parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted by residential sector have been well studied, however, data on PAHs derivatives such as nitrated PAHs (nPAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (oPAHs) are scarce. In this study, emission factors (EFs) of PM10-bound nPAHs and oPAHs from the combustion of eight different solid fuels in three different stoves in rural homes were measured in field, and a total of twelve fuel-stove combinations were included. Results showed that the field-based EFs for different fuel-stove combinations varied over three orders of magnitude, which ranged from 3.3 to 514 μg/kg and from 0.1 to 214 mg/kg for nPAHs and oPAHs, respectively. Biomass burning had 2.2 and 14.8 times higher EFs values of nPAHs and oPAHs compared with coal burning. The size distribution pattern of PAHs derivatives confirmed that they prefer to bind to fine particles. The composition profiles of nPAHs and oPAHs varied largely in different coals, while slightly in different biomasses. Furthermore, the nPAHs and oPAHs composition profiles varied largely from emission source to the nearby atmosphere, implying that the composition of PAHs derivative changed during small-scale transport process. Results from this study can fill in the data gap in PAHs derivative emissions from residential solid fuel combustion and help to evaluate the environmental and health impacts of residential solid fuel combustion.

Spatiotemporal variability of PAHs and their derivatives in sediments of the Laizhou Bay in the eastern China: Occurrence, source, and ecological risk assessment

To understand the pollution status and risk levels in the Laizhou Bay, the spatiotemporal distribution, source, and ecological risk of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 20 substituted PAHs (SPAHs) were studied in surface sediments in 2022. The findings indicated significant seasonal differences in the concentrations of PAHs and SPAHs under the influences of precipitation, temperature, light, and human activities, with higher storage levels in summer than in spring, and there was also a spatial distribution trend of estuary > coast > offshore. 2-Nitrofluorene (2-NF) and 2-methylnaphthalene (2-MN) were the most abundant components of SPAHs in both spring and summer, with levels of 21.44 ng/g and 17.89 ng/g in spring, 43.22 ng/g and 25.51 ng/g in summer, respectively. The results of the diagnostic ratio and principal component analysis - multiple linear regression identified sources of PAHs and SPAHs as combustion sources, including petroleum, coal, and biomass. The risk level of PAHs was low-to-moderate according to the toxicity equivalent quotient (TEQ) and risk quotient. A novel calculation method based on TEQ was proposed to assess the ecological risk of SPAHs, and the results indicated that the risk level of SPAHs was moderate-to-high.

Occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of PAHs and OPAHs in urban agricultural soils from Guangzhou City, China

The occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives in the environment is of growing concern because they exhibit higher toxicity than their parent PAHs. This study evaluated the large-scale occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of 16 PAHs and 14 oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in urban agricultural soils from seven districts of Guangzhou City, China. Linear correlation analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between PAH and OPAH occurrence and a series of parameters. The compositional analysis, principal component analysis, diagnostic ratios, and principal component analysis coupled with a multiple linear regression model were used to identify the sources of PAHs and OPAHs in the soils. The average concentrations of ΣPAHs and ΣOPAHs (59.6 ± 31.1-213 ± 115.5 μg/kg) during the flood season were significantly higher than those during the dry season (42.1 ± 13.3-157.2 ± 98.2 μg/kg), which were due to relatively strong wet deposition during the flood season and weak secondary reactions during the dry season. Linear correlation analysis showed that soil properties, industrial activities, and agricultural activities (r = 0.27-0.96, p < 0.05) were responsible for the spatial distribution of PAHs during the dry season. The PAH distribution was mainly affected by precipitation during the flood season. The concentrations of ΣOPAHs were only related to the soil properties during the dry season because their occurrence was sensitive to secondary reactions, climate and meteorological conditions, and their water solubility. Our results further showed that coal combustion and traffic emissions were the dominant origins of PAHs and OPAHs during both the seasons. Wet deposition and runoff-induced transport also contributed to PAH and OPAH occurrence during the flood season. The results of this study can improve our understanding of the environmental risks posed by PAHs and OPAHs.

Sedimentary spatial variation, source identification and ecological risk assessment of parent, nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a large shallow lake in China

Because polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are persistent, universal, and toxic pollutants, understanding the potential source and ecological risk thereof in lakes is critical to the safety of the aquatic environment. Here, a total of 25 sedimentary samples were collected from Lake Taihu, China, in 2018. The total concentrations of 16 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 15 nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), nine oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), and five hydroxy-PAHs (OH-PAHs) ranged from 294 to 1243, 3.0 to 54.5, 188 to 1897, and 8.3 to 51.7 ng/g dw, with the most abundant compounds being fluoranthene, 1,8-dinitropyrene, 6H-Benzo[cd]pyren-6-one, and 2-phenylphenol, respectively. The spatial distribution of PACs in sediments of Lake Taihu showed elevated concentrations from east to west due to economic development and transportation. The positive correlations between most paired PAHs indicate that these compounds likely originated from similar sources. The total organic carbon and organic matter contents affected the distribution characteristics of PACs in sediments. Diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were integrated to identify the sources. PACs had various sources including combustion, petroleum leakage, traffic emissions, hydroxyl metabolism, and other oxidation pathways in sediments of Lake Taihu. The PMF (R² > 0.9824), which showed better optimal performance compared with PCA-MLR (R² > 0.9564) for PAHs and derivatives, is recommended as the preferred model for quantitative source analysis. Ecological risk assessment showed that the risk quotient values of OPAHs in sediments were much higher than those of other PACs and should be given special attention.

Source identification and ecological risks of parent and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in river surface sediment-pore water systems: Effects of multiple factors

Substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs) have shown higher health and ecological risks than the corresponding parent PAHs (PPAHs) from laboratory studies, their variations in freshwater system, especially in surface sediment and pore water, remain inadequate understanding. In this study, we revealed the coexistence, ecological risk, and multiple factors affecting variations and sources of PPAHs and SPAHs (nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs)) in the surface sediment-pore water system from a typical urban river in Northern China. The concentration ranges of Σ₂₆PPAHs, Σ₁₀NPAHs, and Σ₄OPAHs in the surface sediments were 153.0-5367.4, not detected (N.D.)-105.4, and 42.2-1177.0 ng·g^-1 dry weight, and fell within 0.6-38.8, N.D.-297.9, and N.D.-212.6 ng·mL^-1 in the pore waters. The t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (SNE) coupled with the partitioning around medoids (PAM) elucidated spatiotemporal the variations in PAHs, emphasizing the impacts of industrial activities and sewage discharges. Besides the geochemical and hydrochemical conditions, SPAHs were affected by the potential secondary formation, especially during the wet season. The method comparisons indicated the advantages of principal component analysis-multivariate linear regression (PCA-MLR) and n-alkanes model on source identification. PAHs mainly originated from fossil fuel combustion and vehicular exhaust. The top risk quotient (RQ) values for PAHs occurred in the urban and industrial sections. A majority of the surface sediment samples emerged with low to moderate exposure risks, while all the pore water samples showed high exposure risks. The RQs of OPAHs were significantly higher (p < 0.01) than those of PPAHs. The results suggested the secondary formation of SPAHs as an important role in ecological risks of PAHs in the urban river system.

Anthropogenic impact on soils of protected areas-example of PAHs

The following study presents the concentrations of 10 individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs₁₀) and the total concentration of PAHs (ΣPAHs) determined in soils of protected areas in Southern Poland (EU). The protected areas discussed here include 5 landscape parks and 5 nature reserves located in the Małopolska region. Surface soil samples were collected at 39 locations characterised by different natural conditions and different human pressure level. The samples were used to determine the contents of anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene, chrysene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene and naphthalene. These concentrations of individual PAHs ranged from < 0.005 to 6.34 mg/kg. When considering the legal regulations currently in force, this meant that permissible values were exceeded in 23% of the samples analysed, while increased concentrations were found in another 26% of the samples. The limit values were exceeded most in the case of benzo[b]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene. This occurred with samples collected in the vicinity of transportation routes, mainly local roads. In the case of naphthalene and anthracene, the limit values were not exceeded. Increased or excessive PAHs concentrations do not occur in the vicinity of major industrial plants located near the boundaries of individual landscape parks, which indicates how these pollutants spread. The paper also points to the need to develop new legal solutions to improve the method for assessing PAHs concentrations and their impact on valuable natural areas.

Development of Quantitative Chemical Ionization Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Ambient Nitro- and Oxy-PAHs and Its Applications

The concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere has been continually monitored since their toxicity became known, whereas nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) and oxy-PAHs (OPAHs), which are derivatives of PAHs by primary emissions or secondary formations in the atmosphere, have gained attention more recently. In this study, a method for the quantification of 18 NPAH and OPAH congeners in the atmosphere based on combined applications of gas chromatography coupled with chemical ionization mass spectrometry is presented. A high sensitivity and selectivity for the quantification of individual NPAH and OPAH congeners without sample preparations from the extract of aerosol samples were achieved using negative chemical ionization (NCI/MS) or positive chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (PCI-MS/MS). This analytical method was validated and applied to the aerosol samples collected from three regions in Northeast Asia-namely, Noto, Seoul, and Ulaanbaatar-from 15 December 2020 to 17 January 2021. The ranges of the method detection limits (MDLs) of the NPAHs and OPAHs for the analytical method were from 0.272 to 3.494 pg/m³ and 0.977 to 13.345 pg/m³, respectively. Among the three regions, Ulaanbaatar had the highest total mean concentration of NPAHs and OPAHs at 313.803 ± 176.349 ng/m³. The contribution of individual NPAHs and OPAHs in the total concentration differed according to the regional emission characteristics. As a result of the aerosol samples when the developed method was applied, the concentrations of NPAHs and OPAHs were quantified in the ranges of 0.016~3.659 ng/m³ and 0.002~201.704 ng/m³, respectively. It was concluded that the method could be utilized for the quantification of NPAHs and OPAHs over a wide concentration range.

Nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emissions from solid fuel combustion in rural China: Database of 12 real-world scenarios for residential cooking and heating activities

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derivatives such as oxygenated PAHs (oPAHs) and nitrated PAHs (nPAHs), are receiving raising concerns due to their high toxic potential. Incomplete solid fuel combustion can release large quantities of PAHs derivatives, especially in low-efficiency domestic stoves. In this study, field measurements were conducted in rural Chinese homes to determine emissions of nPAHs and oPAHs from solid fuel combustion. A total of 12 fuel-stove combinations including cooking and space heating activities were investigated. Emission factors (EFs) of total nPAHs and oPAHs were in the range of 1.0-682.1 μg/kg and 0.01-131.7 mg/kg, respectively, with arithmetic means and stand deviations of 53.5 ± 72.5 μg/kg and 13.9 ± 24.4 mg/kg, respectively. The EFs of nPAHs and oPAHs for coal combustion (including honeycomb briquette, coal chunk, and peat tested in this study) were 30.2 ± 28.1 μg/kg and 1.5 ± 2.9 mg/kg, respectively, much lower than that for biomass burning (p < 0.05). The combustion phase could significantly affect the PAHs derivative emissions with higher emissions at initial phase than that at stable phase. Fuel type was found to affect the EFs, composition profiles, and ratios of PAHs derivatives to parent PAHs. This study tries to have an insight of PAHs derivative emissions from various solid fuel combustion, which would be useful in understanding the atmospheric PAHs derivative pollutions in China.

Predictive Models of Gas/Particulate Partition Coefficients (KP) for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Oxygen/Nitrogen Derivatives

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygen/nitrogen derivatives released into the atmosphere can alternate between a gas phase and a particulate phase, further affecting their environmental behavior and fate. The gas/particulate partition coefficient (KP) is generally used to characterize such partitioning equilibrium. In this study, the correlation between log KP of fifty PAH derivatives and their n-octanol/air partition coefficient (log KOA) was first analyzed, yielding a strong linear correlation (R2 = 0.801). Then, Gaussian 09 software was used to calculate quantum chemical descriptors of all chemicals at M062X/6-311+G (d,p) level. Both stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) and support vector machine (SVM) methods were used to develop the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) prediction models of log KP. They yield better statistical performance (R2 > 0.847, RMSE < 0.584) than the log KOA model. Simulation external validation and cross validation were further used to characterize the fitting performance, predictive ability, and robustness of the models. The mechanism analysis shows intermolecular dispersion interaction and hydrogen bonding as the main factors to dominate the distribution of PAH derivatives between the gas phase and particulate phase. The developed models can be used to predict log KP values of other PAH derivatives in the application domain, providing basic data for their ecological risk assessment.

Assessment of the inhalation exposure and incremental lifetime cancer risk of PM2.5 bounded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by different toxic equivalent factors and occupancy probability, in the case of Xi'an

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread toxic pollutants in the atmosphere and have attracted much attention for decades. In this study, we compared the health risks of PAHs based on different toxic equivalent factors (TEFs) in a heavily polluted area during heating and non-heating periods. We also pay attention to occupancy probability (OP) in different polluted areas. The results showed that there were big differences for calculations by different TEFs, and also by OP or not. Age groups except adults were all lower calculated by OP than not. The sensitivity analysis results on the incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) for population groups by Monte Carlo simulation identified that the cancer slope factor extremely affected the health risk assessment in heating periods, followed by daily inhalation exposure levels. However, daily inhalation exposure levels have dominated the effect on the inhalation ILCR and then followed by the cancer slope factor in non-heating periods. The big differences by different calculations investigated that it is important to set up the correlations between the pollution level and health risks, especially for the longtime health assessment.

Characteristic fragmentations of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) in Orbitrap HCD and integrated strategy for recognition of NACs in environmental samples

Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are high of concern due to their mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity to organisms. Here, we attempted to establish a novel searching-validation-evaluation workflow that is tailored to recognize unknown NACs in environmental samples using liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-Orbitrap-HRMS). We studied the fragmentation process of NAC standards in Orbitrap higher-energy collision dissociation (HCD) cells and observed that the mass loss of NO was the most prevalent among all NAC standards at both low and medium levels of collision energy. Thus, neutral loss of NO was considered as a diagnostic fragment of nitro groups and was used to screen out NACs in environmental samples. This technique is mass-loss-dependent, which enhances the recognition efficiency of NACs. Candidates exported from the PubChem compound database were further evaluated to obtain possible structures. This strategy was applied for the analysis of 24 surface soil, and we tentatively discovered two novel NACs in the analyzed samples. The semi-quantification results demonstrated that the concentrations of novel NACs were comparable to those of the ten targeted NACs in soil samples. This study provides an integrated strategy for the recognition of known and unknown NACs, which could be extended to other environmental matrices.

PAHs and nitro-PAHs in urban Beijing from 2017 to 2018: Characteristics, sources, transformation mechanism and risk assessment

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated derivatives (NPAHs) attract continuous attention due to their distinct carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. To investigate the characteristics, sources, formation mechanism and health risk assessment of PAHs and NPAHs, PM_2.5 were collected at an urban site in Beijing from 2017 to 2018. The highest PAHs and NPAHs concentrations were 77.92 ± 54.62 ng/m³ and 963.71 ± 695.06 pg/m³ in the winter campaign, which were several times larger than those in other seasonal campaigns. Distinct diurnal variations of nocturnal levels higher than daytime levels were shown for PAHs and NPAHs. Source analysis indicated that besides vehicle exhaust, biomass burning and coal combustion were important sources of PAHs and NPAHs in the fall and winter campaigns. Secondary formation in atmosphere was another source of NPAHs especially in the spring and summer campaigns. NO₂ and RH could positively influence the heterogeneous formation of NPAHs when RH was less than 60%. Quantum calculation results confirmed the formation pathway of 2N-FLA from the OH/NO₃-initiated oxidation of FLA. The results of health risk assessment showed the potential health risks for the residents, especially in the winter campaign. These results indicated that PAHs and NPAHs still deserve attention following with the decrease concentrations of particulate matter.

Association between mitochondrial DNA methylation and internal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs) and oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) in young adults from Tianjin, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs) and oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) are environmental pollutants with adverse effects on human health. The correlation between the concentrations of PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs in human plasma and the methylation level of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was investigated using data from 110 plasma samples collected in Tianjin, China. The median concentrations of PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs were 16.0 (IQR: 14.4-20.7) ng/mL, 82.2 (IQR: 63.1-97.6) ng/mL and 49.6 (IQR: 28.6-53.8) ng/mL, and the mean proportions were 13.4%, 56.5% and 30.1%, respectively. Bisulfite-PCR pyrosequencing was used to measure the methylation level of MT-CO1 and tRNA-Leu. The methylation levels of two mitochondrial genes (MT-CO1, tRNA-Leu) including four CpG sites (MT-CO1-P1, MT-CO1-P2, tRNA-Leu-P1 and tRNA-Leu-P2) were 0.67% ± 1.38%, 13.54% ± 2.59%, 7.23% ± 5.35% and 1.64% ± 2.94%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that significant correlations were found between PAHs and their derivatives exposure and mtDNA methylation levels.

Semi-volatile organic compounds in fine particulate matter on a tropical island in the South China Sea

Measurements of hazardous semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in remote tropical regions are rare. In this study, polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) [including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs)], organophosphate esters (OPEs), and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) were measured in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) at Yongxing Island in the South China Sea (SCS). The concentrations of PACs (median = 53.5 pg/m³) were substantially low compared with previous measurements. The concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) model showed that the eastern and southern China was the main source region of PAC, occurring largely during the northeast (NE) monsoon. The PM_2.5 showed remarkably high concentrations of OPEs (median = 3231 pg/m³) and moderate concentrations of PAEs (13,013 pg/m³). Some Southeast Asian countries were largely responsible for their higher concentrations, driven by the tropical SCS monsoons. We found significant atmospheric loss of the SVOCs, which is an explanation for the low concentrations of PACs. Enhanced formation of N/OPAHs originated from tropical regions was also observed. The positive matrix factorization model was applied to apportion the SVOC sources. The results, as well as correlation analyses of the SVOC concentrations, further indicate insignificant local sources and enhanced atmospheric reactions on this island.

Quantification and health impact assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions from crop residue combustion

Emission of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon compounds from combustion of crop residue was investigated. Crop residues comprising maize cobs, maize husks, rice husks and bean chaff were burnt in a furnace at a temperature of 400 °C and the emissions from the combustion process were characterized using standard methods. Health risk through inhalation was assessed using toxic equivalent factors and excess lifetime cancer risk. The results showed the detection of 16 PAH compound which included: Benzo[ghi]perylene, Naphthalene, Acenaphthene, Anthracene, Phenanthrene, Fluorene, Fluoranthene, Acenaphthylene, Pyrene, Benzo[a]anthracene, Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, Benzo[b]fluoranthene, Chrysene, Benzo[a]pyrene, Indene[1,2,3-cd]pyrene and Benzo[k]fluoranthene. Benzo[b]fluoranthene had highest mean concentration of 1.30 μg/mg while Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene had the lowest mean concentration of 0.01 μg/mg. It was also revealed that the toxicity of PAHs was due to the presence of Benzo[b]fluoranthene for all the samples except for sample 4 for which the main contribution to toxicity was emission from benzo(a)pyrene, while the cancer risk assessment estimated to be 1.2 × 10^-1 was far above the acceptable carcinogenic risk limit of 1 × 10^-6. This study concluded that, more efforts are needed to reduce emission of PAHs from the combustion of crop residues into the ambient air otherwise, human health could be under threat especially if exposed for a long period.

Co-occurrence and potential ecological risk of parent and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in coastal sediments of the Taiwan Strait

Thirty-two surface sediment samples, collected from the Taiwan Strait (TWS), were investigated for the occurrence, composition profile, and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs). PAHs were ubiquity in the TWS with a total concentration (∑PAHs, excluding naphthalene due to its high volatility) ranging from 17.8-213 ng g^-1. Benzo[b] fluoranthene, fluoranthene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were the predominant PAHs. Also, eight OPAHs were detected, having a cumulative concentration range (∑OPAHs) of 10.5-118 ng g^-1, predominated by anthraquinone and 6H-Benzo[c,d]Pyren-6-one. Higher concentrations of ∑PAHs and ∑OPAHs were detected at sampling sites adjacent to the mainland and in the northwest part of the TWS. The results suggested important continental input, and particle sedimentation under the specific hydrodynamic conditions of the region. Based on the measured concentrations and sediment quality guidelines, PAHs had a limited ecological impact on the area.

Fine particle-bound PAHs derivatives at mountain background site (Mount Tai) of the North China: Concentration, source diagnosis and health risk assessment

Ten nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nPAHs) and 4 oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (oPAHs) in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples from Mount Tai were analyzed during summer (June to August), 2015. During the observation campaign, the mean concentration of total nPAHs and oPAHs was 31.62 pg/m³ and 0.15 ng/m³, respectively. Two of the monitored compounds, namely 9-nitro-anthracene (9N-ANT) (6.86 pg/m³) and 9-fluorenone (9FO) (0.05 ng/m³) were the predominant compounds of nPAHs and oPAHs, respectively. The potential source and long-range transportation of nPAHs and oPAHs were investigated by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) method and the potential source contribution function (PSCF) methods. The results revealed that biomass/coal burning, gasoline vehicle emission, diesel vehicle emission and secondary formation were the dominant sources of nPAHs and oPAHs, which were mainly from Henan province and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Bohai sea. The incremental life cancer risk (ILCR) values were calculated to evaluate the exposure risk of nPAHs and oPAHs for three group people (infant, children and adult), and the values of ILCR were 7.02 × 10^-10, 3.49 × 10^-9 and 1.41 × 10^-8 for infant, children and adults, respectively. All these values were lower than the standard of EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) (<10^-6), indicating acceptable health risk of nPAHs and oPAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs, oxygenated PAHs, nitrated PAHs, and azaarenes) in air from four climate zones of China: Occurrence, gas/particle partitioning, and health risks

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives [oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), and azaarenes (AZAs)] are toxic and ubiquitous air pollutants. In this study, the concentrations of these PACs were determined in air obtained in spring and autumn of 2012 from urban and rural areas of the Tibetan Plateau, temperate, subtropical, and tropical climate zones in China. Average concentrations (gaseous + particulate) of ∑29PAHs, ∑15OPAHs, ∑11NPAHs, and ∑4AZAs were 928 ± 658, 54 ± 45, 5.3 ± 4.4, 14 ± 11 ng m^-3 and 995 ± 635, 67 ± 38, 8.4 ± 6.1, 24 ± 16 ng m^-3 in spring and autumn, respectively. Various C fractions and latitude correlated significantly with the concentrations and ratios of PACs. The slopes of the regression of gas-particle partition coefficients (K_p) of PACs on their sub-cooled liquid vapor pressures (P_L⁰), indicated both adsorption and absorption to total suspended particles (TSP) for PAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs in the four studied climatic zones. This result was further supported by comparing the fractions of PACs in TSP calculated from field data with those predicted by the Junge-Pankow adsorption and K_OA absorption models. The concentration ratios of most OPAHs or NPAHs to their parent PAHs and of benzo[e]pyrene/benzo[a]pyrene were higher in autumn than in spring and increased with remoteness from point sources. This suggests enhanced secondary formation of PAH derivatives due to the elevated photochemical activity in autumn and longer ageing of air and associated transformation of PACs during their long-distance transport from source regions (urban sites) to rural sites. Lifetime lung cancer risk estimated from PACs ranged from 0.8 ± 0.6 to 3.1 ± 1.0 (×10^-3), exceeding the value (10^-5) recommended by the WHO. Gaseous PACs contributed substantially to the estimated cancer risks and their contributions increased with decreasing latitude in China.

Spatiotemporal variations and source identification of atmospheric nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the coastal cities of the Bohai and Yellow Seas in northern China

Gaseous and particulate nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs, 12 species) and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs, 4 species) in seven coastal cities of the Bohai and Yellow Seas were determined throughout the year. The annual arithmetical mean concentrations of ΣNPAH₁₂ and ΣOPAH₄ were 737 ± 475 pg/m³ and 35.3 ± 26.8 ng/m³. NPAHs and OPAHs existed mainly in the gaseous phase, accounted for 88.5% and 95.2% of the total concentrations. Air concentrations of ΣNPAH₁₂ and ΣOPAH₄ in the coastal cities of the Yellow Sea were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those of the Bohai Sea. Air concentrations of ΣNPAH₁₂ and ΣOPAH₄ were significantly higher (p < 0.01) in winter than in summer. Strong secondary formation of atmospheric NPAHs and OPAHs occurred in all of the studied cities. The sequence of annual contribution of the emission sources of airborne NPAHs determined by positive matrix factorization was traffic exhaust > combustion of solid fuels (coal and biomass) > secondary formation, while for OPAHs, it was combustion of solid fuels > secondary formation > traffic exhaust. The combustion of solid fuels served as the main source of NPAHs and OPAHs in winter, while secondary formation was the predominant source in summer. Interregional transport may exert an important effect on the local atmospheric NPAHs and OPAHs by potential source contribution function analysis. The estimated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) due to inhalation exposure to specific NPAHs ranged from 2.9 × 10^-12 to 6.2 × 10^-6 (median at 4.8 × 10^-9) was mainly attributed to exposure before the age of 16.

Nitrated and parent PAHs in the surface water of Lake Taihu, China: Occurrence, distribution, source, and human health risk assessment

Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) have toxic potentials that are higher than those of their corresponding parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and thus have received increasing attention in recent years. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, source, and human health risk assessment of 15 NPAHs and 16 PAHs were investigated in the surface water from 20 sampling sites of Lake Taihu during the dry, normal, and flood seasons of 2018. The ΣPAH concentrations ranged from 255 to 7298 ng/L and the ΣNPAH concentrations ranged from not-detected (ND) to 212 ng/L. Among the target analytes, 2-nitrofluorene (2-nFlu) was the predominant NPAH, with a detection frequency ranging from 85% to 90% and a maximum concentration of 56.2 ng/L. The three-ringed and four-ringed NPAHs and PAHs comprised the majority of the detected compounds. In terms of seasonal variation, the highest levels of the ΣNPAHs and ΣPAHs were in the dry season and flood season, respectively. Diagnostic ratio analysis indicated that the prime source of NPAHs was direct combustion, whereas in the case of PAHs the contribution was predominantly from a mixed pattern including pollution from unburned petroleum and petroleum combustion. The human health risk of NPAHs and PAHs was evaluated using a lifetime carcinogenic risk assessment model. The carcinogenic risk level of the targets ranged from 2.09 × 10^-7 to 5.75 × 10^-5 and some surface water samples posed a potential health risk.

Three years of atmospheric concentrations of nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygen heterocycles at a central European background site

Nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs, OPAHs) are abundant in the atmosphere and contribute significantly to the health risk associated with inhalation of polluted air. Despite the health hazard they pose, NPAHs and OPAHs were rarely included in monitoring. The aim of this study is to provide the first multi-year temporal trends of the concentrations, composition pattern and fate of NPAHs and OPAHs in air from a site representative of background air quality conditions in central Europe. Samples were collected every second week at a rural background site in the Czech Republic during 2015-2017. Concentrations ranged from 1.3 to 160 pg m^-3 for Σ₁₇NPAHs, from 32 to 2600 pg m^-3 for Σ₁₀OPAHs and from 5.1 to 4300 pg m^-3 for Σ₂O-heterocycles. The average particulate mass fraction (θ) ranged from 0.01 ± 0.02 (2-nitronaphthalene) to 0.83 ± 0.22 (1-nitropyrene) for individual NPAHs and from <0.01 ± 0.01 (dibenzofuran) to 0.96 ± 0.08 (6H-benzo (c,d)pyren-6-one) for individual OPAHs and O-heterocycles. The multiyear variations showed downward trends for a number of targeted compounds. This suggests that on-going emission reductions of PAHs are effective also for co-emitted NPAHs and OPAHs.

Characteristics and Health Risks of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-PAHs in Xinxiang, China in 2015 and 2017

Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples were collected in the summer and winter of 2015 and 2017 in Xinxiang, China. Nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and three nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) in PM_2.5 were detected via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The PAHs concentration in summer and winter decreased from 6.37 ± 1.30 ng/m³ and 96.9 ± 69.9 ng/m³ to 4.89 ± 2.67 ng/m³ and 49.8 ± 43.4 ng/m³ from 2015 to 2017. NPAHs decreased in winter (from 1707 ± 708 pg/m³ to 1192 ± 1113 pg/m³), but increased in summer from 2015 (336 ± 77.2 pg/m³) to 2017 (456 ± 312 pg/m³). Diagnostic ratios of PAHs indicated that petroleum combustion was the main emission source in summer, and pollutants originating from the combustion of petroleum, coal and biomass dominated in winter. The 2-nitrofluoranthene (2-NFR)/2-nitropyrene (2-NP) ratio in this study demonstrated that the OH radical pathway was the main pathway for the formation of 2-NP and 2-NFR. The mean total benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent concentrations (BaP_eq) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values decreased from 2013 to 2017. The high value of total BaPeq in the winter of 2017 in Xinxiang revealed that a high-risk of cancer remained for residents. The results of this study demonstrate that the decreases in PAHs and NPAHS concentrations from 2015 to 2017. Combined with reducing gaseous pollutants concentration, the reduction in this study might be attributable to emissions reductions by implementing the air pollution control regulations in Xinxiang city in 2016.

Do economic development and population agglomeration inevitably aggravate haze pollution in China? New evidence from spatial econometric analysis

With sustained economic development, China's ecological environment is becoming increasingly fragile and the problem of haze pollution is becoming increasingly prominent, which has affected the normal life of human beings and the stable development of society. In this paper, 287 cities' panel data from 1998 to 2016 are used, PM_2.5 is used to represent haze pollution, and the spatial Durbin model is used to explore the role of the economy and population agglomeration on smog pollution. The empirical results show that (1) haze pollution has obvious spatial spillover. From the perspective of China as a whole, the relationship between the economy and smog pollution is an inverted U shape. (2) China is divided into three economic regions, i.e., the east, the middle, and the west. In the east and middle regions, it is found that economic development also shows an inverted U-shaped relationship with haze pollution. (3) Regardless of the country or the three major economic regions, population agglomeration is the primary factor that aggravates haze pollution; the progress of technology and the optimization of the industrial structure can improve haze pollution. (4) Through further analysis of the indirect effects of haze in China, it is found that there is a significant spatial spillover effect. According to the results of this research, policy suggestions are put forward.

Chemical Characteristics of Atmospheric PM10 and PM2.5 at a Rural Site of Lijiang City, China

Emissions from biomass burning are very serious in Southeast Asia and South Asia in April. In order to explore the effect of long-range transport of biomass emissions from the Indochina Peninsula in Southwest China during the period of the southeast monsoon season and to find out the main pollution sources in local atmospheric PM_2.5, a field campaign was conducted from 6–26 April 2011 in Lijiang, China. Twenty-four-hour PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 filter samples were collected, and inorganic ions, elements, and carbonaceous components (including organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated PAHs (NPAHs)) were measured. The monthly mean mass concentrations of particulate matter (PM) were 40.4 and 14.4 μg/m³ for PM₁₀ and PM_2.5, respectively. The monthly mean concentrations of OC and EC in PM₁₀ were 6.2 and 1.6 μg/m³, respectively. The weekly mean concentrations of ∑PAHs and ∑NPAHs were 11.9 ng/m³ and 289 pg/m³, respectively, in atmospheric PM₁₀ of Lijiang. The diagnostic ratios of PAH and NPAH isomers were used to analyze the sources of PAHs and NPAHs in PM₁₀. The ratios of Benz(a)anthracene/(Chrysene+Benz(a)anthracen), Fluoranthene/(Fluoranthene+Pyrene) and Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene/(Benzo(g,h,i)perylene+Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene) were 0.45 ± 0.04, 0.61 ± 0.01, and 0.53 ± 0.03, respectively, indicating the contribution from coal combustion and biomass burning. The 1-nitropyrene/Pyrene (1-NP/Pyr) ratio was 0.004 ± 0.001, suggesting that the contribution to NPAHs mainly came from coal combustion. Sulfate was the most prominent inorganic ionic species, with monthly mean levels of 2.28 and 1.39 μg/m³ in PM₁₀ and PM_2.5, respectively. The monthly mean mass ratios of NO₃⁻/SO₄²⁻ were 0.40 and 0.23 in PM₁₀ and PM_2.5, respectively, indicating that the contribution of atmospheric anions from coal combustion sources was much more important than that from other sources. Based on the relatively high SO₄²⁻ concentrations and low NO₃⁻/SO₄²⁻ ratios, combined with the data analysis of isomer ratios of PAHs and NPAHs, we can conclude that coal combustion, traffic, and dust were the major contributors to local atmospheric PM in Lijiang city, while biomass burning may also have contributed to local atmospheric PM in Lijiang city to some degree.

Field study of PAHs with their derivatives emitted from e-waste dismantling processes and their comprehensive human exposure implications

Extensive electronic waste (e-waste) recycling might be an important emission source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) mixture, which might induce negative effects on the employees. In the present work, atmospheric pollution patterns of PAHs and their derivatives were determined in five different workshops to dismantle waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) via thermal treatment. The results showed that mass concentrations of PAHs, chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), brominated PAHs (BrPAHs), oxy-PAHs (OPAHs) as well as carbazole (CBZ) were ranged from 1.53 × 10⁴-2.02 × 10⁵, 32.3-364, 8.29-1.13 × 10³, 923-1.39 × 10⁴ and 225-1.95 × 10³ pg·m^-3, respectively. Electric heating furnaces (EHF) workshops emitted relatively higher contaminants than other disposal sectors. OPAHs was found to be the most predominant derivatives of PAHs with 9,10-anthraquinone (83.0%) has the absolute superior in EHFTV, while benzo(a)anthracene-7,12-dione (>45.0%) was found to be the highest congener in other workshops, respectively. 9,10-Cl₂Phe exhibited the largest contributions to the ΣClPAHs whereas the composition profiles of BrPAHs varied among five workshops. In addition to direct chlorination of parent PAHs, thermal degradation of halogenated flame retardants incorporated into plastic materials might dominate the generation of Cl/BrPAHs from e-waste dismantling activities. The specific isomeric ratios of BrPAHs (3-BrFlu/1-BrPyr and 1-BrPyr/3-BrFlu) might be used to discriminate other emission sources from pyrolysis of WPCBs. However, their specific application as novel tracers for source identification should be further verified with more studies. The emitted PAHs mixture with their derivatives in all dismantling workshops posed carcinogenic risks to these dismantling workers via inhalation, particularly the workshop using electric heating furnaces to treat router. Nevertheless, new loadings of PAHs derivatives observed from e-waste dismantling activities, as well as their comprehensive health risk assessment provides us with a fresh perspective on the source appointment and potential adverse consequences of PAHs. More attention needs to be paid to the potential carcinogenic risks of exposure to PAHs and their derivatives from e-waste dismantling processes.

Size-distribution-based assessment of human inhalation and dermal exposure to airborne parent, oxygenated and chlorinated PAHs during a regional heavy haze episode

The adverse health effects of haze and particle-bound contaminants in China have recently caused increasing concern, and particle size plays a significant role in affecting human exposure to haze-correlated pollutants. To this background, size-segregated particulate samples (nine size fractions (<0.4, 0.4-0.7, 0.7-1.1, 1.1-2.1, 2.1-3.3, 3.3-4.7, 4.7-5.8, 5.8-9.0 and > 9.0 μm) were collected in three scale-gradient cities in northern China and analysed for a series of parent, oxygenated and chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, O-PAHs and Cl-PAHs). The total geometric mean concentrations of PAHs and O-PAHs for Beijing, Zhengzhou and Xinxiang were 98.1 and 27.2, 77.9 and 77.5, 41.0 and 30.7 ng m^-3, respectively, which were 50-200 times higher than those for Cl-PAHs (0.5, 0.7 and 0.4 ng m^-3). Though unimodal size-distribution patterns were found for all these contaminants for these three cities, PAHs represented distinctly higher concentration levels around the peak fraction (0.7-2.1 μm) than O-PAHs and Cl-PAHs. With 4-6 ring PAHs as dominant components in all samples, the percentage proportion of 2-3 ring PAHs (ranging from 1% to 26%) generally increased with particle size increasing, implying the sources of these compounds varied little among the 9 size fractions in all three cities. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) model and permeability coefficient method were synchronously applied to the size-segregated data for inhalation and dermal exposure assessment to intensively estimate the human exposure doses to airborne PAHs. Further, the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was calculated and it's found that ILCR from inhalation was higher than that from dermal uptake for children and adults in Beijing and Zhengzhou, while the ILCR for Xinxiang presented a contrary pattern, revealing dermal uptake to be an equally significant exposure pathway to airborne PAHs compared to inhalation.

PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs) emitted by gasoline vehicles: Characterization and health risk assessment

Seventeen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and eight nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) in PM_2.5 and conventional gaseous pollutants exhausted from 54 in-use gasoline vehicles encompassing different emission standards (China 1 to China 5) were tested on the chassis and engine dynamometric test bench. With the increase of emission standards, a decrease in the emissions of PM_2.5-bound PAHs and NPAHs was detected. The emission factors (EFs) of total PAHs and NPAHs in PM_2.5 emitted by the vehicles with a mileage of >100,000 km were greater than that emitted by the vehicles with driving mileage of <100,000 km under all the five emission standards. The EFs of PM_2.5-bound PAHs and NPAHs emitted from port fuel injection engines were larger than that from gasoline direct injection engines. The emissions of PM_2.5-bound PAHs and NPAHs were less correlated with the exhaust of CO, while the hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were strongly correlated with the PM_2.5-bound PAHs emissions. The emissions of NPAHs and NOx had an inverse correlation. The toxic (TEQs) of total PAHs and NPAHs in China 3, China 4 and China 5 were significantly reduced compared to China 1 and China 2, which may be related to exhaust technology improvements. Although the EFs of NPAHs were significantly lower than those of PAHs, the TEQs of NPAHs were higher, which indicates that the toxic effect of NPAHs emitted by gasoline vehicles were stronger than PAHs.

Phase distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their oxygenated and nitrated derivatives in the ambient air of a Brazilian urban area☆

Air quality in large cities has worsened in recent years as a consequence people's health is directly affected. Among the toxic compounds released to environmental air are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated PAHs (nitro-PAHs), and oxygenated PAHs (oxy-PAHs). Performant methods to analyze these compounds is necessary to enable adequate monitoring of air quality. Thus, this manuscript presents the development of a highly sensitive method to analyze PAHs, nitro-PAHs, and oxy-PAHs collected from ambient air (PM_2.5) and the gas phase for a period of one year in the urban area of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. PAHs and their derivatives were extracted by cold fiber solid phase microextraction (CF-SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The proposed method allows simultaneous analysis of 16 PAHs, nitro-PAHs and oxy-PAHs, presenting very good limits of detection and quantification, as well as appropriate precision and recovery. The results obtained for the period of one year allowed different studies. The compounds collected simultaneously from gas and particulate phase showed that total concentration of 16 PAHs were higher in the gas phase than in the particulate. On the other hand, nitro-PAHs and oxy-PAHs presented similar concentration in gas and particulate phases. The potential carcinogenicity of PAHs relative to benzo[a]pyrene showed benzo[a]pyrene equivalents of 0.49 ng m^-3. The estimated risk of lifetime lung cancer was 5 × 10^-5. Principal component analysis and diagnostic ratio was applied for source distribution indicating that burning of gasoline, diesel and biomass accounted for the PAHs profile in ambient air samples.

PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives (nitrated-PAHs and oxygenated-PAHs) in a road tunnel located in Qingdao, China: Characteristics, sources and emission factors

Daytime and nighttime PM_2.5 samples were collected at a road tunnel located in Qingdao, China. The mass concentrations and chemical compositions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) and oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs) were analysed to determine the variation characteristics and sources. The concentrations in exit were obviously higher than those of entrance in the tunnel. Fluoranthene (FLT) and Pyrene (PYR) were the most abundant PAHs, 2 + 3-nitrofluoranthene (2 + 3N-FLA), 1-nitropyrene (1N-PYR) and 2-nitropyrene (2N-PYR) were the dominant NPAHs, and 9-fluorenone (9-FO) and 9,10-anthraquinone (9,10-ANQ) were the most abundant OPAHs. The high rings (4-6 rings) PAHs accounted for over 90% of the total PM_2.5-bound PAH concentrations, most of which were considered as motor vehicle emissions. Based on the diagnostics ratios and PCA results, the most important sources of PAHs and NPAHs were estimated as gasoline and diesel vehicles emissions in the tunnel. In addition, non-exhausts (such as road dust, brake line, asphalt and tires wear) also had some contributions to PAHs and NPAHs. The average emission factors were 60.98, 9.02 and 8.47 μg veh^-1 km^-1 for total PM_2.5-bound PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs, respectively. The emission factors of high rings (4-6 rings) PAHs were greater than those with low rings (2-3 rings). 1N-PYR had the highest emission factor in all measured NPAHs, while the emission factors for the two highest OPAHs were 9-FO and 9,10-ANQ in this tunnel.

Emission characteristics and temporal variation of PAHs and their derivatives from an ocean-going cargo vessel

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro- (NPAHs) and oxy-derivatives (OPAHs) are of considerable concern due to their toxicity and carcinogenic hazards. Ships are recognized as an important emission source of these compounds. Marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) are the two most commonly used fuels. The emission characteristics and toxicities of PM_2.5-bound PAHs, NPAHs and OPAHs due to HFO and MDO combustion in atypical ocean-going vessel were investigated. The EF variability of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) varied considerably with the fuel formulation (HFO and MDO) and engine loading (20%-100%). The concentration of ΣPACs was 0.63 mg/kWh for MDO and ranged from 2.14 to 9.80 mg/kWh for HFO. Compared to HFO-20%, the EFs of ΣPAHs, ΣNPAHs and ΣOPAHs from MDO-20% were reduced by 97%, 77% and 73%, respectively. As identified through the coefficient of divergence, the profile of HFO-20% was notably different from those under the other three engine loadings for HFO. In addition, the emissions of ΣPAHs and ΣOPAHs showed a significant correlation with PM_2.5, while they were relatively weak for ΣNPAHs. However, the CO and PAC emissions were not highly correlated. Furthermore, the BaP_eq-ΣPAHs values were 0.010 mg/g for MDO and ranged from 0.092 mg/g to 0.306 mg/g for HFO, and the reduction ranged from 89% to 97% by substituting MDO for HFO. These data highlight the importance of improving fuel quality in close proximity to port areas and are useful for enhancing relevant databases.

Oxygenated and Nitrated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Ambient Air-Levels, Phase Partitioning, Mass Size Distributions, and Inhalation Bioaccessibility

Among the nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs and OPAHs) are some of the most hazardous substances to public health, mainly because of their carcinogenicity and oxidative potential. Despite these concerns, the concentrations and fate of NPAHs and OPAHs in the atmospheric environment are largely unknown. Ambient air concentrations of 18 NPAHs, 5 quinones, and 5 other OPAHs were determined at two urban and one regional background sites in central Europe. At one of the urban sites, the total (gas and particulate) concentrations of Σ10OPAHs were 10.0 ± 9.2 ng/m3 in winter and 3.5 ± 1.6 ng/m3 in summer. The gradient to the regional background site exceeded 1 order of magnitude. Σ18NPAH concentrations were typically 1 order of magnitude lower than OPAHs. Among OPAHs, 9-fluorenone and (9,10)-anthraquinone were the most abundant species, accompanied by benzanthrone in winter. (9,10)-Anthraquinone represented two-thirds of quinones. We found that a large fraction of the target substance particulate mass was carried by submicrometer particles. The derived inhalation bioaccessibility in the PM10 size fraction is found to be ≈5% of the total ambient concentration of OPAHs and up to ≈2% for NPAHs. For 9-fluorenone and (9,10)-anthraquinone, up to 86 and 18%, respectively, were found at the rural site. Our results indicate that water solubility could function as a limiting factor for bioaccessibility of inhaled particulate NPAHs and OPAHs, without considerable effect of surfactant lipids and proteins in the lung lining fluid.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs, oxygenated PAHs, nitrated PAHs and azaarenes) in soils from China and their relationship with geographic location, land use and soil carbon fractions

The assessment of risks arising from polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), particularly from the polar PACs [azaarenes (AZAs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), nitrated PAHs (NPAHs)] requires us to understand the drivers of their spatial distribution. We determined the concentrations of 29 PAHs, 4 AZAs, 15 OPAHs and 11 NPAHs and their relationships with land use (urban vs. rural and forest vs. agriculture), climate (Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, temperate, sub tropical and tropical) and three C fractions (soil organic C, char, soot) in 36 mineral topsoils (0-5 cm) of China. The average concentrations±standard deviation of the Σ29PAHs, Σ16PAHs, Σ4AZAs, Σ15OPAHs and Σ11NPAHs were 352 ± 283, 206 ± 215, 5.7 ± 3.7, 108 ± 66.8 and 3.2 ± 3.4 ng g^-1, respectively. PAH, OPAH, NPAH and AZA concentrations were frequently not correlated within or across the regions reflecting different sources and turnover of PAHs and their derivatives. Temperate urban soils showed the highest and tropical rural soils the lowest concentrations of PACs. Forest soils had higher PACs concentrations than agricultural soils. Longitude correlated positively with the ∑29PAHs concentrations, because of increasing emissions of PAHs from East to West. The tropical and plateau regions with the lowest PAH concentrations, were dominated by low molecular weight PAHs (LMW-PAHs) with LMW/high molecular weight (HMW)-PAHs ratios >1, while the other two climatic regions with more industrial sites showed the opposite. Latitude correlated with NPAHs likely because of enhanced formation by photochemical reactions during transport in the atmosphere. The concentrations of the ∑29PAHs, ∑4AZAs, ∑15OPAHs, ∑11NPAHs and their individual components were only occasionally correlated with those of carbon fractions (soil organic C, soot and char) suggesting a small role of soil C pool properties in driving PACs concentrations. Our results demonstrate that the strongest drivers of PACs concentrations are land use and distance to PAC emission sources followed by climate and size and properties of the soil organic C pool.

Distribution Pattern, Emission Characteristics and Environmental Impact of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Download Ash and Dust from Iron and Steel Enterprise

Download ash and emission dust samples were collected from sintering, coking, ironmaking and steelmaking processes of iron and steel enterprises in Laiwu. Sixteen kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority controlled lists were quantitatively analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Laser particle size analyzer was used to obtain the distribution pattern of download ash. It was found that the diameter distribution pattern from four production processes was quite different. The proportion of fine particulate (0–2.5 μm) was the highest (72.62%) in the steelmaking refining process, and was 28.962% in the ironmaking process. Moreover, the particle size in download ash from steelmaking refining is all less than 10 μm and that from the ironmaking process was 52.92%. The medium-sized particles (10–100 μm) were dominant in sinter and coking download ashes. The total PAHs (∑₁₆PAHs) mass concentration ranged from 0.49 ± 0.06 to 69.63 ± 5.57 μg·g⁻¹ in download ash samples, and varied from 2.815 ± 0.253 to 19.429 ± 2.545 μg·m⁻³ in emission dust samples. The ∑₁₆PAHs values were both largest in download ash and dust emission from the coking process (69.63 ± 5.57 μg·g⁻¹ and 19.429 ± 2.545 μg·m⁻³, respectively). The most abundant individual PAHs were benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]anthracene in ash samples, and benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene in emission dust samples. Dominant compounds were high-molecular weight (four- to six-ring) PAHs in both ash and dust samples. The concentration order of individual compounds in PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 in ambient air around the steel plant was completely consistent with each other, and the concentration of ∑₁₆PAHs was the highest in the steel plant and lowest in Daqin village because of upwind of the steel plant. The concentrations of benzo[b]fluoranthene and fluoranthene in ambient air were comparatively high, and were in accordance with the higher concentration of the two monomers in the download ash samples, which suggested that the effect of the emission flue gas from the steel plant on ambient air was necessary to concern.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds in urban air and associated inhalation cancer risks: A case study targeting distinct source sectors

Passive air sampling was conducted in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area from 2016 to 2017 for 6 periods, in order to investigate ambient levels of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) associated with different source types. The selected sampling sites (n = 8) cover geographical areas with varying source emissions including background, traffic, urban, industrial and residential sites. Passive air samples were analyzed for PACs which include PAHs, alkylated PAHs (alk-PAHs), dibenzothiophene and alkylated dibenzothiophenes (DBTs) and results for PAHs were used to calculate inhalation cancer risks using different approaches. The samples were also characterized for PAH derivatives including nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs). Concentrations of Σalk-PAHs and DBTs, which are known to be enriched in fossil fuels, as well as ΣNPAHs, were highest at a traffic site (MECP) located adjacent to the 18-lane Highway 401 that runs across Toronto. Except for an industrial site (HH/BU), PAC compositions were similar across the sampling sites with Σalk-PAHs being the most abundant class of PACs suggesting traffic emission was a major contributor to PACs in the atmosphere of Toronto. The industrial site exhibited a distinct chemical composition with ΣPAHs dominating over Σalk-PAHs and with elevated levels of fluoranthene, 9-nitroanthracene, and 9,10-anthraquinone, which likely reflects emissions from nearby industrial sources. MECP and HH/BU exhibited higher lifetime excess inhalation cancer risks indicating an association with traffic and industrial sources. The importance of the traffic sector as a source of PACs to ambient air is further supported by strong correlations of the ΣPAHs, Σalk-PAHs, DBTs, and ΣOPAHs with NO_x. This study highlights the importance of traffic as an emission source of PACs to urban air and the relevance of PAC classes other than just unsubstituted PAHs that are important but currently not included in air quality guidelines or for assessing inhalation cancer risks.

Comparative mutagenic activity of atmospheric particulate matter from limeira, stockholm, and kyoto

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) organic fractions from urban centers are frequently mutagenic for the Salmonella/microsome assay. This mutagenicity is related to both primary and secondary pollutants, and meteorological conditions have great influence on the secondary pollutant's formation. Our objective was to compare the mutagenicity of atmospheric total suspended particulates (TSP) from three cities with marked different meteorological conditions and TSP concentrations: Limeira (Brazil) with 99.0 μg/m³ , Stockholm (Sweden) with 6.2 μg/m³ , and Kyoto (Japan) with 28.0 μg/m³ . For comparison, we used the same batch of filters, sample extraction method, and Salmonella/microsome testing protocol with 11 strains of Salmonella with and without metabolic activation. Samples were collected during winter and pooled into one single extract representing each city. All samples were mutagenic for all tested strains, except for TA102. Based on the strain's selectivity, nitroarenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic amines play a predominant role in the mutagenicity of these samples. The mutagenic potencies expressed by mass of extracted organic material (EOM; revertants/μg EOM) were similar (~twofold difference) among the cities, despite differences in meteorological conditions and pollution sources. In contrast, the mutagenic potencies expressed by air volume (rev/m³ ) varied ~20-fold, with Limeira > Kyoto ≈ Stockholm. These results are the first systematic assessment of air mutagenicity from cities on three continents using the same protocols. The results confirm that the mutagenic potency expressed by EOM mass is similar regardless of continent of origin, whereas the mutagenic potency expressed by air volume can vary by orders of magnitude. Size distribution of airborne particle-bound PAHs and o-PAHs and their implications for dry deposition

The present study was conducted to examine the potential mechanisms responsible for the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their oxygenated derivatives (o-PAHs) in size fractionated particles and their environmental implications. Size-fractionated atmospheric particles were collected at urban Shanghai, China and analyzed for 5 PAHs and 6 o-PAHs. The concentrations of particle-bound ∑6o-PAHs (sum of 6 o-PAH congeners, 19.1 ± 4.5 ng m-3) were significantly higher than those of ∑5PAHs (sum of 5 PAHs, 9.5 ± 1.9 ng m-3). The size-fractionated distributions of airborne ∑5PAHs and ∑6o-PAHs displayed bimodal peaks at 0.7-1.1 and 9.0-10.0 μm. Emission sources and volatility were important factors influencing the size distribution of particle-bound 5 PAHs and 6 o-PAHs. The dry deposition fluxes of particle-bound 6 o-PAHs estimated from the measured data (3087 ± 467 ng m-2 d-1) were approximately 2 times higher than those of PAHs (1531 ± 344 ng m-2 d-1), with a total deposition flux of 4618 ± 743 ng m-2 d-1. The relative contributions of particles to dry deposition were also size-dependent, e.g., coarse (aerodynamic diameters (Dp) > 2.1 μm) particles dominated the dry deposition fluxes of PAHs and o-PAHs. These results highlight the significance of providing a comprehensive understanding of particle size distribution of PAHs and o-PAHs and their implication for dry deposition in China.

Personal exposure to PM2.5-bound organic species from domestic solid fuel combustion in rural Guanzhong Basin, China: Characteristics and health implication

Domestic solid fuels combustion produces a mass of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5). PM_2.5-bound organics, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs) and hopanes, were quantified in indoor, outdoor and personal exposure samples collected in rural Guanzhong Basin, China. The average concentration of total quantified PAHs in personal exposure samples was 310 ± 443 ng m^-3, 1.5 times of those of indoor (211 ± 120 ng m^-3) and outdoor (189 ± 115 ng m^-3). Similar observations were found for the OPAHs and PAEs, i.e., much higher concentrations were seen in personal exposure samples. Hopanes average personal exposure concentration (13 ± 9.7 ng m^-3) was comparable to indoors (15 ± 9.7 ng m^-3) and outdoors (13 ± 9.6 ng m^-3). Among four common heating ways applied in Chinese dwelling, the highest exposure levels to PAHs, OPAHs and PAEs were found for indoor coal chunks stoves. Concentration under electric power was 1.2-4.5 folds lower than those with solid fuels in this study, proved to be the cleanest energy for the household heating. The exposures to PM_2.5 on cell viabilities were also investigated. The largest reduction of 70% on cell viabilities was seen for indoor coal chunks stove housewives, indicating that the emissions from coal combustion had the greatest cytotoxic effects. The results evidenced that the heating ways in rural area could greatly impact on the housewife health in northwestern China. Advanced heating technology and protection should be conducted to reduce the personal exposures to PM_2.5 from domestic solid fuel combustions.

PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) in rural and suburban areas in Shandong and Henan Provinces during the 2016 Chinese New Year's holiday

Eighteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and fourteen nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) in PM_2.5 samples were collected during the 2016 Chinese New Year's holiday (CNY) at one suburban and three rural sites in Shandong and Henan Provinces. The PAH and NPAH concentrations were highest at the suburban site. The rural PAH concentrations in Qingzhou (QZ), Heze (HZ), and Liaocheng (LC) were higher than those measured at many other urban sites, indicating that PAHs pollution was notably higher in the suburban and rural sites during this festive period. Elevated PAH concentrations were observed during fireworks periods, but fireworks burning was not a significant or direct PAHs or NPAHs source based on molecular profiles and diagnostic ratios. The measured PAHs and NPAHs at the sampling sites mainly originated from coal and biomass burning. The increased concentrations during CNY's Eve may be related to behavioural changes during the period. Secondary formation of NPAHs mainly occurred via OH radical chemistry at all four sites. Fireworks burning did not increase secondary formation of NPAHs. ∑BaP_eq concentrations exhibited strong correlations with PAHs concentrations, and the highest and lowest concentrations were observed in QZ and Xiping (XP), respectively. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was calculated to be between 10^-6 and 10^-4 for 1-70 years old persons, with the highest risks observed in the adult (30-70 years) and the toddler (1-6 years) groups.

Characterization of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives (nitro-and oxy-PAHs) emissions from two ship engines under different operating conditions

Emissions from ship exhaust have been recognized as an important source of air pollution in coastal areas. To investigate the impacts of engine type, fuel and operating conditions on polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) emissions, particle matter (PM_2.5) samples emitted from an inland-river bulk freighter (BF) using marine diesel oil (MDO) and an ocean-going passenger vessel (PV) using heavy fuel oil (HFO) were collected under five operation conditions (preheating, leaving, cruising, entering and berthing). The concentrations of 17 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 12 nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) and 4 oxygenated-PAHs species were determined. The concentrations of ΣPAHs, ΣNPAHs and ΣOPAHs measured on the BF and PV exhausts ranged from 1.95 to 417 μg/m³, 86.5 to 6.89 × 10³ ng/m³ and 2.00-102 μg/m³, respectively. Both ships showed a high proportion of four-ring PAHs, while the BF had more three-ring PAHs (34.00-70.38%) and the PV had more five-ring PAHs (30.02-35.95%). The calculation of indicatory PACs are able to increase the precision of source appointment. The emission factors (EFs) of PACs under maneuvering (including preheating, leaving, entering and berthing) was much higher than those under cruising, which might be due to the engine load, fuel consumption, and secondary reactions. Compared with HFO, combustion with MDO decreased the power-based ΣPAH EFs by 82-99%, power-based ΣNPAH EFs by 86-98%, and power-based ΣOPAHs EFs by 50-82%. These data highlight the importance of quantifying and monitoring ship emissions in close proximity to port area, and are useful for enhancing the relevant databases and improving the accuracy of ship emission inventories.

Emission behaviors of nitro- and oxy-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during pyrolytic disposal of electronic wastes

Emission factors (EFs) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives (12 nitro-PAHs and 4 oxy-PAHs) during the pyrolysis of two types of electronic waste (E-waste) were measured. Compositional profile, particle size distribution, gas-particle partitioning, correlations with precursor species and influences of pyrolytic temperature were investigated. The derivative products were dominated by oxy-PAHs. The averaged EFs of oxy-PAHs were 3.37 ± 4.10 μg/g and 32.6 ± 18.1 μg/g for PWBs and plastic casings, respectively, and those of nitro-PAHs were 85.7 ± 92.4 ng/g and 83.3 ± 69.7 ng/g, respectively. Most EFs of derivative species significantly correlated with their corresponding parent PAHs (p < 0.05), except a few cases, indicating formation of derivatives via related reactions of parent species. Most nitro-PAHs occurred in fine particles with the size < 2.1 μm, and oxy-PAHs were prevailing in fine particles with the size between 0.4 μm and 2.1 μm. Proportions of oxy-PAHs in particulate phase, especially those with higher molecular weight, were noticeably greater than those of the corresponding parent species. Below 480 °C, there was no evident difference in the EFs of PAH derivatives, while the EFs noticeably increased from 520 °C. With the increasing temperature, the majority of oxy-PAHs still occurred on finer particles, while the contribution of coarser particles tended to increase.
