Response of microbial communities and interactions to thallium in contaminated sediments near a pyrite mining area

Thallium isotopic fractionation in soils from a historic HgTl mining area: New insights on thallium geochemistry

Thallium (Tl), a highly toxic heavy metal, which may pose significant environmental threats due to extensive discharge from anthropogenic activities. It is crucial to understand geochemical behavior of Tl in soils for initiating proper measures for Tl pollution control. For this purpose, transport behavior of Tl and its dominant factors in soils collected from a typically Tl-enriched depth profile, surrounding a historical tailing dump near an independent HgTl mine area in China, were investigated by using Tl isotope compositions. Results showed that an overall enrichment of Tl (48.68-375.21 mg/kg) was accompanied with As elevation (135.00-619.00 mg/kg) in the whole depth profile, and Tl and As exhibited co-migration behavior with Fe, S, K, and Rb. Geochemical fractionation of Tl unveiled by sequential extraction further indicated that Mn-/Fe-bearing minerals and clay minerals act as main hosts of Tl in the studied soils. Thallium isotopic composition and its fractionation pattern further revealed that the major contributors to high Tl levels in the depth profile were tailing and lorandite minerals, with mean contribution rate of 51.99% and 42.47%, respectively. These findings facilitate the understanding of Tl transport behavior in highly contaminated environment, providing valuable insights for developing new technologies in mining waste treatment and historical mine reclamation.

The impact of microbial community structure changes on the migration and release of typical heavy metal (loid)s during the revegetation process of mercury-thallium mining waste slag

The effect of changes in microbial community structure on the migration and release of toxic heavy metal (loid)s is often ignored in ecological restoration. Here, we investigated a multi-metal (mercury and thallium, Tl) mine waste slag. With particular focus on its strong acidity, poor nutrition, and high toxicity pollution characteristics, we added fish manure and carbonate to the slag as environmental-friendly amendments. On this basis, ryegrass, which is suitable for the remediation of metal waste dumps, was then planted for ecological restoration. We finally explored the influence of changes in microbial community structure on the release of Tl and As in the waste slag during vegetation reconstruction. The results show that the combination of fish manure and carbonate temporarily halted the release of Tl, but subsequently promoted the release of Tl and arsenic (As), which was closely related to changes in the microbial community structure in the waste slag after fish manure and carbonate addition. The main reason for these patterns was that in the early stage of the experiment, Bacillaceae inhibited the release of Tl by secreting extracellular polymeric substances; with increasing time, Actinobacteriota became the dominant bacterium, which promoted the migration and release of Tl by mycelial disintegration of minerals. In addition, the exogenously added organic matter acted as an electron transport medium for reducing microorganisms and thus helped to reduce nitrate or As (Ⅴ) in the substrate, which reduced the redox potential of the waste slag and promoted As release. At the same time, the phylum Firmicutes, including specific dissimilatory As-reducing bacteria that are capable of converting As into a more soluble form, further promoted the release of As. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for guiding the ecological restoration of relevant heavy-metal (loid) mine waste dumps.

A metagenomic study of antibiotic resistance genes in a hypereutrophic subtropical lake contaminated by anthropogenic sources

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a major threat to human and environmental health. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of ARGs in Lake Cajititlán, a hypereutrophic subtropical lake in Mexico contaminated by anthropogenic sources (urban wastewater and runoff from crop and livestock production). ARGs (a total of 475 genes) were detected in 22 bacterial genera, with Pseudomonas (144 genes), Stenotrophomonas (88 genes), Mycobacterium (54 genes), and Rhodococcus (27 genes) displaying the highest frequencies of ARGs. Among these, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia showed the highest number of ARGs. The results revealed a diverse array of ARGs, including resistance to macrolides (11.55 %), aminoglycosides (8.22 %), glycopeptides (6.22 %), tetracyclines (4 %), sulfonamides (4 %), carbapenems (1.11 %), phenicols (0.88 %), fluoroquinolones (0.44 %), and lincosamides (0.22 %). The most frequently observed ARGs were associated with multidrug resistance (63.33 %), with MexF (42 genes), MexW (36 genes), smeD (31 genes), mtrA (25 genes), and KHM-1 (22 genes) being the most common. Lake Cajititlán is a recreational area for swimming, fishing, and boating, while also supporting irrigation for agriculture and potentially acting as a drinking water source for some communities. This raises concerns about the potential for exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria through these activities. The presence of ARGs in Lake Cajititlán poses a significant threat to both human and environmental health. Developing strategies to mitigate the risks of antibiotic resistance, including improving wastewater treatment, and promoting strategic antibiotic use and disposal, is crucial. This study represents a significant advancement in the understanding of antibiotic resistance dynamics in a hypereutrophic subtropical lake in a developing country, providing valuable insights for the scientific community and policymakers.

Photochemical transformation and immobilization of thallium in the presence of iron and arsenic: Mechanistic insights from the coupled formation of arsenate complexes

Despite the occurrence of thallium (Tl) in the acidic mining-affected areas being highly positively correlated with iron (Fe) and arsenic (As), the effects of the two accompanying elements on Tl redox transformation and immobilization remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the photochemical redox kinetics and immobilization efficiency of Tl for a wide range of As/Fe and As/Tl ratios under acidic conditions. We provided the first experimental confirmation of the complexation of Tl(III) with As(V) by the spectrophotometric method and revealed the role of Tl(III)-As(V) complexes in decreasing the photoreduction rate of Tl(III) under sunlight. Additionally, the negative impact of colloidal Fe(III)-As(V) and Fe(III)-As(III) complexes formation on decreasing photoactive Fe(III) speciation and thus the apparent quantum yield of •OH was highlighted, which consequently hindered the oxidative conversion of Tl(I) to Tl(III). We rationalize the kinetics results by developing the model which quantitatively describes the photochemistry of Tl. Furthermore, we demonstrated the colloid-facilitated immobilization of Tl(III) through the formation of Tl(III)-As(V) clusters and surface adsorption onto the complexes. This study broadens the mechanistic understanding of redox transformation and immobilization potential of Tl and aids in assessing Tl speciation as well as its coupled transformation with Fe and As species in the sunlit water environment.

Cryptic footprint of thallium in soil-plant systems; A review

The current review highlights the complex behavior of thallium (Tl) in soil and plant systems, offering insight into its hazardous characteristics and far-reaching implications. The research investigates the many sources of Tl, from its natural existence in the earth crust to its increased release through anthropogenic activities such as industrial operations and mining. Soil emerges as a significant reservoir of Tl, with diverse physicochemical variables influencing bioavailability and entrance into the food chain, notably in Brassicaceae family members. Additionally, the study highlights a critical knowledge gap concerning Tl influence on legumes (e.g., soybean), underlining the pressing demand for additional studies in this crucial sector. Despite the importance of leguminous crops in the world food supply and soil fertility, the possible impacts of Tl on these crops have received little attention. As we traverse the ecological complexity of Tl, this review advocates the collaborative research efforts to eliminate crucial gaps and provide solutions for reducing Tl detrimental impacts on soil and plant systems. This effort intends to pave the path for sustainable agricultural practices by emphasizing the creation of Tl-tolerant legume varieties and revealing the complicated dynamics of Tl-plant interactions, assuring the long-term durability of our food systems against the danger of Tl toxicity.

Bioindicator responses to extreme conditions: Insights into pH and bioavailable metals under acidic metal environments

Acid mine drainage (AMD) caused environmental risks from heavy metal pollution, requiring treatment methods such as chemical precipitation and biological treatment. Monitoring and adapting treatment processes was crucial for success, but cost-effective pollution monitoring methods were lacking. Using bioindicators measured through 16S rRNA was a promising method to assess environmental pollution. This study evaluated the effects of AMD on ecological health using the ecological risk index (RI) and the Risk Assessment Code (RAC) indices. Additionally, we also examined how acidic metal stress affected the diversity of bacteria and fungi, as well as their networks. Bioindicators were identified using linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe), Partial least squares regression (PLS-R), and Spearman analyses. The study found that Cd, Cu, Pb, and As pose potential ecological risks in that order. Fungal diversity decreased by 44.88% in AMD-affected areas, more than the 33.61% decrease in bacterial diversity. Microbial diversity was positively correlated with pH (r = 0.88, p = 0.04) and negatively correlated with bioavailable metal concentrations (r = -0.59, p = 0.05). Similarly, microbial diversity was negatively correlated with bioavailable metal concentrations (bio_Cu, bio_Pb, bio_Cd) (r = 0.79, p = 0.03). Acidiferrobacter and Thermoplasmataceae were prevalent in acidic metal environments, while Puia and Chitinophagaceae were identified as biomarker species in the control area (LDA>4). Acidiferrobacter and Thermoplasmataceae were found to be pH-tolerant bioindicators with high reliability (r = 1, P < 0.05, BW > 0.1) through PLS-R and Spearman analysis. Conversely, Puia and Chitinophagaceae were pH-sensitive bioindicators, while Teratosphaeriaceae was a potential bioindicator for Cu-Zn-Cd metal pollution. This study identified bioindicator species for acid and metal pollution in AMD habitats. This study outlined the focus of biological monitoring in AMD acidic stress environments, including extreme pH, heavy metal pollutants, and indicator species. It also provided essential information for heavy metal bioremediation, such as the role of omics and the effects of organic matter on metal bioavailability.

Applying thallium isotopic compositions as novel and sensitive proxy for Tl(I)/Tl(III) transformation and source apportionment

Thallium is a rare metal known for its highly toxic nature. Recent research has indicated that the precise determination of Tl isotopic compositions using Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP MS) provides new opportunities for understanding Tl geochemical behavior. While isotopic fractionation of Tl derived from anthropogenic activities (e.g., mining, smelting) have been reported, there is limited information regarding Tl influenced by both natural weathering processes and anthropogenic origins. Herein, we investigated, for the first time, the Tl isotopic compositions in soils across a representative Tl-rich depth profile from the Lanmuchang (LMC) quicksilver mine (southwest China) in the low-temperature metallogenesis zone. The results showed significant variations in Tl isotope signatures (ε205Tl) among different soil layers, ranging from -0.23 to 3.79, with heavier isotope-205Tl enrichment observed in the bottom layers of the profile (ε205Tl = 2.18-3.79). This enrichment of 205Tl was not solely correlated with the degree of soil weathering but was also partially associated with oxidation of Tl(I) by Fe (hydr)oxide minerals. Quantitative calculation using ε205Tl vs. 1/Tl data further indicated that the Tl enrichment across the soil depth profile was predominantly derived from anthropogenic origins. All these findings highlight that the robustness and reliability of Tl isotopes as a proxy for identifying both anthropogenic and geogenic sources, as well as tracing chemical alterations and redox-controlled mineralogical processes of Tl in soils. The nascent application of Tl isotopes herein not only offers valuable insights into the behavior of Tl in surface environments, but also establishes a framework for source apportionment in soils under similar circumstances.

High geogenic soil thallium shows limited impact on bacterial community

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic trace metal, included in the US EPA list of priority pollutants. Even though its toxicity is potentially higher or comparable to Cd or Hg, its environmental impact is largely unknown. Despite its toxicity, only a few recent studies are mapping the impact of recently introduced Tl on soil microbial communities, namely in agricultural systems but no studies focus on its long term effect. To complement the understanding of the impact of Tl on soil, this study aims to describe the influence of extremely high naturally occurring Tl concentration (50 mg/kg of potentially bioavailable Tl) on soil microbial communities. Our investigation concentrated on samples collected at Buus (Erzmatt, Swiss Jura, Switzerland), encompassing forest and meadow soil profiles of the local soil formed on hydrothermally mineralized dolomite rock, which is naturally rich in Tl. The soil profiles showed a significant proportion of potentially bioavailable Tl. Yet, even this high concentration of Tl has a limited impact on the richness of the soil bacterial community. Only the meadow soil samples show a reduced richness compared to control samples. Furthermore, our analysis of geogenic Tl contamination in the region unveiled a surprising finding: compared to other soils of Switzerland and in stark contrast to soils affected by recent mining activities, the structure of the bacterial community in Buus remained relatively unaffected. This observation highlights the unique ability of soil microbial communities to withstand extreme Tl contamination. Our study advances the understanding of Tl's environmental impact and underscores the resilience of soil microbes in the face of severe long-term contamination.

Effects of uranium mining on soil bacterial communities and functions in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau

The microecological effects of plateau uranium mining are still unknown. In this study, we used 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing to analyze the impact of plateau uranium mining on the microbial diversity and community structure of tailings soil, tunnel soil, and soil at different depths in an open pit. The results showed that uranium mining significantly reduced soil microbial community richness and diversity indicators, including Chao1, Pielou evenness, and Shannon index (P < 0.05). Uranium mining activities significantly reduced the abundance of RB41, Vicinamidactaceae, and Nitrospira (P < 0.05). Interestingly, the abundance of Thiobacillus, Sphingomonas, and Sulfuriferula significantly increased in the soil samples from various environments and depths during uranium mining (P < 0.05). Beta diversity analysis found that uranium mining resulted in the differentiation of soil microbial communities. Functional enrichment analysis found that uranium mining resulted in the functional enrichment of DNA binding response regulator, DNA helicase, methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein, and Helicase conserved C-terminal domain, whereas cell wall synthesis, nonspecific serine/threonine protein kinase, RNA polymerase sigma-70 factor, and ATP binding cassette transporter were significantly affected by uranium mining (P < 0.05). In addition, we also found that different uranium mining environments and soil depths enriched diverse microbial populations and functions to cope with the environmental pressures that were elicited by uranium mining, including Gaiella, Gemmatimonas, Lysobacter, Pseudomonas, signal transformation histidine kinase, DNA-directed DNA polymerase, and iron complex outer membrane receptor protein functions (P < 0.05). The results have enhanced our understanding of the impact of uranium mining on plateau soil microecological stability and the mechanism of microbial response to uranium mining activities for the first time and aided us in screening microbial strains that can promote the environmental remediation of uranium mining in plateaus.

Application of Cu isotopes to identify Cu sources in soils impacted by multiple anthropogenic activities

Copper (Cu) is an important micronutrient for animals and plants, but it is toxic at high concentrations in soil. Soils adjacent to industrial areas would be subjected to severe Cu pollution. Identifying Cu sources in the surface environment is crucial for understanding their pollution level and fate. This study investigated Cu content, isotope composition of topsoils, and two soil profiles with varying levels of Cu contamination and related potential Cu sources in southwest China. The difference in Cu isotope compositions of tailing (1.29 ± 0.08 ‰), smelting fly ash (0.04 ± 0.03 ‰), coal (2.44 ± 0.09 ‰), coal-burning fly ash (0.34 ± 0.03 ‰), and geogenic soil (0.10 ± 0.03 ‰) enabled us to distinguish anthropogenic Cu from geogenic Cu. The plot of δ65Cu and 1/Cu demonstrates that Cu of the polluted soils was from three end-members: the smelting fly ash, the vehicle exhaust, and the background soils. Based on the mass balance model, we calculated that the fly ash from smelting was the major anthropogenic source, contributing approximately 29 % of Cu contamination in soils, and the diesel exhaust was another important source, with a contribution rate of approximately 25 %. Additionally, soil profile results suggest that anthropogenic Cu could transport through soil profiles and influence Cu content and isotope signatures of subsurface soils, at least to a depth of ∼60 cm. Finally, our research indicates that Cu isotopes could be a promising tool for tracing industrial pollution, as significant Cu isotope fractionation would occur during the smelting process. Our research highlights the contribution of smelting and diesel exhaust to Cu contamination in the soils in a representative mining area. These findings serve as a scientific foundation for the development of policy for pollution control in industrial-affected regions.

A mini-review on indigenous microbial biofilm from various wastewater for heavy-metal removal - new trends

Biofilm, as a form of the microbial community in nature, represents an evolutionary adaptation to the influence of various environmental conditions. In nature, the largest number of microorganisms occur in the form of multispecies biofilms. The ability of microorganisms to form a biofilm is one of the reasons for antibiotic resistance. The creation of biofilms resistant to various contaminants, on the other hand, improves the biological treatment process in wastewater treatment plants. Heavy metals cannot be degraded, but they can be transformed into non-reactive and less toxic forms. In this process, microorganisms are irreplaceable as they interact with the metals in a variety of ways. The environment polluted by heavy metals, such as wastewater, is also a source of undiscovered microbial diversity and specific microbial strains. Numerous studies show that biofilm is an irreplaceable strategy for heavy metal removal. In this review, we systematize recent findings regarding the bioremediation potential of biofilm-forming microbial species isolated from diverse wastewaters for heavy metal removal. In addition, we include some mechanisms of action, application possibilities, practical issues, and future prospects.

Effects of dissolved organic matter derived from cow manure on heavy metal(loid)s and bacterial community dynamics in mercury-thallium mining waste slag

Organic amendments in aided phytostabilization of waste slag containing high levels of heavy metal (loid)s (HMs) are an important way to control the release of HMs in situ. However, the effects of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from organic amendments on HMs and microbial community dynamics in waste slag are still unclear. Here, the effect of DOM derived from organic amendments (cow manure) on the geochemical behaviour of HMs and the bacterial community dynamics in mercury (Hg)-thallium (Tl) mining waste slag were investigated. The results showed that the Hg-Tl mining waste slag without the addition of DOM continuously decreased the pH and increased the EC, Eh, SO42-, Hg, and Tl levels in the leachate with increasing incubation time. The addition of DOM significantly increased the pH, EC, SO42-, and arsenic (As) levels but decreased the Eh, Hg, and Tl levels. The addition of DOM significantly increased the diversity and richness of the bacterial community. The dominant bacterial phyla (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota) and genera (Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Delftia, Sphingomonas, and Enterobacter) were changed in association with increases in DOM content and incubation time. The DOM components in the leachate were humic-like substances (C1 and C2), and the DOC content and maximum fluorescence intensity (FMax) values of C1 and C2 in the leachate decreased and first increased and then decreased with increasing incubation time. The correlations between HMs and DOM and the bacterial community showed that the geochemical behaviours of HMs in Hg-Tl mining waste slag were directly influenced by DOM-mediated properties and indirectly influenced by DOM regulation of bacterial community changes. Overall, these results indicated that DOM properties associated with bacterial community changes increased As mobilization but decreased Hg and Tl mobilization from Hg-Tl mining waste slag.

A novel application of thallium isotopes in tracing metal(loid)s migration and related sources in contaminated paddy soils

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, which is harmful to plants and animals even in trace amounts. Migration behaviors of Tl in paddy soils system remain largely unknown. Herein, Tl isotopic compositions have been employed for the first time to explore Tl transfer and pathway in paddy soil system. The results showed considerably large Tl isotopic variations (ε²⁰⁵Tl = -0.99 ± 0.45 ~ 24.57 ± 0.27), which may result from interconversion between Tl(I) and Tl(III) under alternative redox conditions in the paddy system. Overall higher ε²⁰⁵Tl values of paddy soils in the deeper layers were probably attributed to abundant presence of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides and occasionally extreme redox conditions during alternative dry-wet process which oxidized Tl(I) to Tl(III). A ternary mixing model using Tl isotopic compositions further disclosed that industrial waste contributed predominantly to Tl contamination in the studied soil, with an average contribution rate of 73.23%. All these findings indicate that Tl isotopes can be used as an efficient tracer for fingerprinting Tl pathway in complicated scenarios even under varied redox conditions, providing significant prospect in diverse environmental applications.

Response of soil fungal community to chromium contamination in agricultural soils with different physicochemical properties

Chromium (Cr) contamination has been of great concern in agricultural soil health due to its persistence, toxicity and bioaccumulation. Fungi, as an essential regulator of soil remediation and biochemical processes, had an unclear response to Cr contamination. In this study, the composition, diversity and interaction mechanisms of fungal communities in agricultural soils from ten different provinces of China were investigated in order to elucidate the fungal community response to varying soil properties and Cr concentrations. The results showed that high concentrations of Cr led to substantial alterations in the fungal community composition. The complex soil properties had a far greater impact on the fungal community structure than the single factor of Cr concentration, with soil available phosphorus (AP) and pH being most influential. Function predictions based on FUNGuild indicated that high concentrations of Cr have a significant impact on certain functional groups of fungi, including mycorrhizal fungi and plant saprotroph. The fungal community tended to resist Cr stress by enhancing interactions and clustering among network modules, while generating new keystone taxa. This study allowed insights into the response of soil fungal community to Cr contamination in different agricultural soils from different provinces and provided a theoretical basis for soil Cr ecological risk assessment and the development of bioremediation techniques for Cr-contaminated soils.

Microbial diversity in paddy rhizospheric soils around a large industrial thallium-containing sulfide utilization zone

Thallium (Tl) is a rare and extremely toxic metal whose toxicity is significantly higher than cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb). The extensive utilization of Tl-bearing minerals, such as mining activities, has led to severe Tl pollution in a variety of natural settings, while little is known to date about its effect on the microbial diversity in paddy soils. Also, the geochemical behavior of Tl in the periodical alterations between dry and wet conditions of paddy soils remains largely unknown. Herein, the sequential extraction method and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis were adopted to analyze Tl's migration and transformation behavior and the microbial diversity in the paddy soils with different pollution levels. The results indicated that Tl was mainly concentrated in reducible fraction, which is different from other types of soils, and may be closely attributed to the abundance of Fe-Mn (hydr)oxides in the paddy rhizospheric soils. Further analysis revealed that pH, total S, Pb, Sb, Tl and Cd were the dominant environmental factors, and the enrichment level of these potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) exerted obvious impacts on the diversity and abundance of microorganism in the rhizospheric soils, and regulating microbial community. The geochemical fractionation of Tl was closely correlated to soil microorganisms such as Fe reducing bacteria (Geothrix) and sulfate reducing bacteria (Anaerolinea), playing a critical role in Tl geochemical cycle through redox reaction. Hence, further study on microorganisms of paddy rhizospheric soils is of great significance to the countermeasures for remediating Tl-polluted paddy fields and protect the health of residents.

Community response of soil microorganisms to combined contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and potentially toxic elements in a typical coking plant

Both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) of coking industries impose negative effects on the stability of soil ecosystem. Soil microbes are regarded as an essential moderator of biochemical processes and soil remediation, while their responses to PAHs-PTEs combined contamination are largely unknown. In the present study, soil microbial diversity and community composition in the typical coking plant under the chronic co-exposure of PAHs and PTEs were investigated and microbial interaction networks were built to reveal microbial co-occurrence patterns. The results indicated that the concentrations of PAHs in the soil inside the coking plant were significantly higher than those outside the plant. The mean concentration of ∑16PAHs was 2894.4 ng·g^-1, which is 5.58 times higher than that outside the plant. The average Hg concentration inside the coking plant was 22 times higher than the background value of Hebei province. The soil fungal community inside the coking plant showed lower richness compared with that of outside community, and there are significant difference in the bacterial and fungal community composition between inside and outside of coking plant (p < 0.01). Predicted contribution of different environmental factors to each dominant species based on random forest identified 20 and 25 biomarkers in bacteria and fungi, respectively, that were highly sensitive to coking plant soil in operation, such as Betaproteobacteria，Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes. Bacterial and fungal communities were shaped by the soil chemical properties (pH), PTEs (Hg), and PAHs together in the coking plant soils. Furthermore, the bacterial and fungal interaction patterns were investigated separately or jointly by intradomain and interdomain networks. Competition is the main strategy based on the co-exclusion pattern in fungal community, and the competitive relationship inside the coking plant is more complex than that outside the plant. In contrast, cooperation is the dominant strategy in bacterial networks based on the co-occurrence pattern. The present study provided insights into microbial response strategies and the interactions between bacteria and fungi under long-term combined contamination.

Arsenic shapes the microbial community structures in tungsten mine waste rocks

Tungsten (W) is a critical material that is widely used in military applications, electronics, lighting technology, power engineering and the automotive and aerospace industries. In recent decades, overexploitation of W has generated large amounts of mine waste rocks, which generate elevated content of toxic elements and cause serious adverse effects on ecosystems and public health. Microorganisms are considered important players in toxic element migrations from waste rocks. However, the understanding of how the microbial community structure varies in W mine waste rocks and its key driving factors is still unknown. In this study, high-throughput sequencing methods were used to determine the microbial community profiles along a W content gradient in W mine waste rocks. We found that the microbial community structures showed clear differences across the different W levels in waste rocks. Notably, arsenic (As), instead of W and nutrients, was identified as the most important predictor influencing microbial diversity. Furthermore, our results also showed that As is the most important environmental factor that regulates the distribution patterns of ecological clusters and keystone ASVs. Importantly, we found that the dominant genera have been regulated by As and were widely involved in As biogeochemical cycling in waste rocks. Taken together, our results have provided useful information about the response of microbial communities to W mine waste rocks.

Straw Biochar at Different Pyrolysis Temperatures Passivates Pyrite by Promoting Electron Transfer from Biochar to Pyrite

To control acid mine drainage (AMD) at source, biochar, a new green and environmentally friendly passivator has been introduced to passivate pyrite. However, the raw material and pyrolysis temperature largely determine the physical and chemical properties of biochar, the causal relationship between biochar and pyrite and the underlying mechanism are still unknown. Here, biochar materials (rice-straw biochar (RSB) and sugarcane bagasse biochar (SBB)) at different pyrolysis temperatures (300–600 °C) were utilized for the passivation of pyrite. The results of our investigations revealed that the passivation ability of RSB was superior to that of SBB. The addition of RSB with higher pyrolysis temperatures could greatly enhance the passivation efficiency of pyrite. RSB-500 (produced at a pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C) achieved the best passivation effect on pyrite. RSB can form Fe-O bonds through C=O bonding with pyrite. Moreover, the addition of RSB created a reducing environment in the mixture system because of its strong electron-donation capacity (EDC) and altered the energy-band structure of pyrite, which promoted the transfer of electrons from biochar to pyrite. On the contrary, the addition of SBB did not result in the formation of Fe-O bonds with pyrite. In addition, the EDC of SBB was also lower than that of RSB and it had almost no effect on the band structure of pyrite. Hence it did not alter the direction of the electron migration. These findings shed light on the mechanism of biochar passivation of pyrite and provide a theoretical foundation for selecting suitable biochar materials for AMD prevention at source.

A new organosilane passivation agent prepared at ambient temperatures to inhibit pyrite oxidation for acid mine drainage control

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a significant environmental problem caused by the oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide ores. Organosilane passivation is an effective strategy to inhibit pyrite oxidation. However, synthetic organic silane passivation agents generally require temperatures of 50-80 °C, resulting in high energy consumption and high synthesis cost. In this study, a 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane -methyltrimethoxysilane (APS-MTMS) coatings was successfully prepared at ambient temperatures of 15-40 °C as a passivation agent to inhibit pyrite oxidation. Chemical leaching tests were used to study the inhibition performance of APS-MTMS for pyrite oxidation. The experimental results showed that the release of the total Fe from APS-MTMS-coated pyrite was 11.31 mg/L after chemical oxidation for 7 hours, and the passivation rate can reach 77.78%. The contact angle of the APS-MTMS-coated pyrite was significantly larger (140.4°) than that of the bare pyrite (58.8°), indicating that APS-MTMS prompted the formation of a superhydrophobic surface of pyrite, improving the oxidation resistance. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to probe the interaction mechanism of APS-MTMS with pyrite. The results indicated that APS accelerated the Si-O-Si formation by amino protonation and enriched a crosslinked network of Si-O-Si and Fe-O-Si on the pyrite surface to prevent pyrite oxidation. This study provides a novel method for preparing organosilane passivation materials at ambient temperatures for AMD control.

Long-term nickel contamination increased soil fungal diversity and altered fungal community structure and co-occurrence patterns in agricultural soils

Nickel (Ni) contamination imposes deleterious effects on the stability of soil ecosystem. Soil fungal community as a crucial moderator of soil remediation and biochemical processes has attracted more and more research interests. In the present study, soil fungal community composition and diversity under long-term Ni contamination were investigated and fungal interaction networks were built to reveal fungal co-occurrence patterns. The results showed that moderate Ni contamination significantly increased fungal diversity and altered fungal community structure. Functional predictions based on FUNGuild suggested that the relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) significantly increased at moderate Ni contamination level. Ni contamination strengthened fungal interactions. Keystone taxa at different Ni contamination levels, such as Penicillium at light contamination, were identified, which might have ecological significance in maintaining the stability of fungal community to Ni stress. The present study provided a deeper insight into the effect of long-term Ni contamination on fungal community composition and co-occurrence patterns, and was helpful to further explore ecological risk of Ni contamination in cultivated field.

Light- and H2O2-Mediated Redox Transformation of Thallium in Acidic Solutions Containing Iron: Kinetics and Mechanistic Insights

The redox transformation between the oxidation states of thallium (Tl(I) and Tl(III)) is the key to influencing its toxicity, reactivity, and mobility. Dissolved iron (Fe) is widely distributed in the environment and coexists at a high level with Tl in acidic mine drainages (AMDs). While ultraviolet (UV) light and H₂O₂ can directly (by inducing Tl(III) reduction) and indirectly (by inducing Fe(III) to form reactive intermediates) impact the redox cycles of Tl in Fe(III)-containing solutions, the kinetics and mechanism remain largely unclear. This study is the first to investigate the UV light- and H₂O₂-mediated Tl redox kinetics in acidic Fe(III) solutions. The results demonstrate that UV light and H₂O₂ could directly reduce Tl(III) to Tl(I), with the extent of reduction dependent on the presence of Fe(III) and the solution pH. At pH 3.0, Tl(I) was completely oxidized to Tl(III), which can be ascribed to the generation of hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) from the Fe(III) photoreduction or Fe(III) reaction with H₂O₂. The kinetics of Tl(I) oxidation were strongly affected by the Fe(III) concentration, pH, light source, and water matrix. Kinetic models incorporating Tl redox kinetics with Fe redox kinetics were developed and satisfactorily interpreted Tl(III) reduction and Tl(I) oxidation under the examined conditions. These findings emphasize the roles of the UV light- and H₂O₂-driven Fe cycles in influencing the redox state of Tl, with implications for determining its mobility and fate in the environment.

Heavy metals speciation and distribution of microbial communities in sediments from the abandoned Mo-Ni polymetallic mines, southwest of China

Chemical fractions of heavy metals (Mo, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Pb, Cd, and Cr) and compositions of bacteria and fungi in surface sediments from the Mo-Ni polymetallic mine area were analyzed. The results indicated that the mean concentrations of Mo, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd were higher than their background values. The mean percentage of Cr in residual fraction was much higher than that of other heavy metals. Mo, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Pb were mainly associated with oxidizable fraction. The dominant proportions of Mn and Cd were found in exchangeable fraction with mean percentages of 93.46% and 54.50%, respectively. According to RAC classification and potential ecological risk index (PERI), the Cd with high bioavailability had a very high environmental risk. The MisSeq sequencing results of bacteria and fungi revealed that microbial communities discrepantly respond to different sampling sites. The most abundant phylum of bacteria and fungi were Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, respectively. The bioavailable heavy metals including Mo-B, Pb-B, and Cd-B were recognized to have important influences on both dominant bacterial and fungal communities. The present study manifested that the bioavailability of heavy metal is very important to assess the potential environmental risk and plays a key role in shaping microbial structure.

Kinetics and mechanism of Thallium(I) oxidation by Permanganate: Role of bromide

The oxidation of thallium(I) (Tl (I)) to Tl (III) is referred to as an efficient means for Tl removal. Bromide (Br‾) inevitably occurs in nearly all water sources at concentrations of 0.01-67 mg/L (0.14-960 μM). The effect of Br‾ remains largely unclear but likely of critical importance on the redox fate and thus the removal potential of Tl (I) during typical oxidation treatment processes. Here, we investigate the kinetics and tackle the mechanism of Tl (I) oxidation by permanganate (KMnO₄) under the influence of Br‾. The results demonstrated that Br‾ at environmental levels exhibited significant catalytic effect on Tl (I) oxidation kinetics by KMnO₄ at acidic pH of 4.0-7.0, while no significant effect of Br‾ was observed for Tl(I) oxidation under alkaline conditions of pH 8.0 and 9.0. It was found that the enhanced oxidation kinetics under acidic conditions was driven by the combined effect of and autocatalysis mediated by MnO₂ and a fast oxidation kinetics served by in-situ formed bromine species. Through quantifying the relative contributions of those bromine species to the homogenous oxidation of Tl(I), HOBr, Br₂ and Br₂O were found to play roles in catalyzing the oxidation of Tl(I) by KMnO₄. The results discussed herein highlight the critical role of Br‾ on the Tl(I) complex oxidation process by KMnO₄ and may have implications for evaluating the redox cycle and removal potential of Tl in bromide-containing water treatment.

Structure and diversity of fungal communities in long-term copper-contaminated agricultural soil

Copper (Cu) contamination threatens the stability of soil ecosystems. As important moderators of biochemical processes and soil remediation, the fungal community in contaminated soils has attracted much research interest. In this study, soil fungal diversity and community composition under long-term Cu contamination were investigated based on high-throughput sequencing. The co-occurrence networks were also constructed to display the co-occurrence patterns of the soil fungal community. The results showed that the richness and Chao1 index both significantly increased at 50 mg kg^-1 Cu and then significantly decreased at 1600 and 3200 mg kg^-1 Cu. Soil fungal diversity was significantly and positively correlated with plant dry weight. Specific tolerant taxa under different Cu contamination gradients were illustrated by linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe). Soil Cu concentration and shoot dry weight were the strongest driving factors influencing fungal composition. The relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increased first and then declined along with elevating Cu concentrations via FUNGuild analysis. The interactions among fungi were enhanced under light and moderate Cu contamination but weakened under heavy Cu contamination by random matrix theory (RMT)-based molecular ecological network analysis. Penicillium, identified as a keystone taxon in Cu-contaminated soils, had the function of removing heavy metals and detoxification, which might be vital to trigger the resistance of the fungal community to Cu contamination. The results may facilitate the identification of Cu pollution indicators and the development of in situ bioremediation technology for contaminated cultivated fields.

Eelgrass (Zostera marina) and its epiphytic bacteria facilitate the sinking of microplastics in the seawater

Marine microplastics have received considerable attention as a global environmental issue. However, despite the constant accumulation of microplastics in the ocean, their transport processes and mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated microplastics in the sediments of seagrass meadows and nearby regions without seagrass along the Shandong coast and found that the sediment in the seagrass meadows was a sink for microplastics. Subsequently, we evaluated the influence of eelgrass (Zostera marina), a common coastal seagrass, on the sedimentation of suspended polystyrene microplastics. The results showed that 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/L eelgrass leaves decreased the abundance of microplastics in seawater in a dose-dependent manner over a period of 3-48 h under shaking conditions at 120 rpm at 22 °C. After 48 h of shaking, microplastic abundances in the 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/L eelgrass groups significantly decreased by 46.9%, 53.1%, and 88.4%, respectively. Microplastics can adhere to eelgrass leaves and form biofilms, which promoted the formation of white floc that traps the suspended microplastics, causing them to sink. Furthermore, two epiphytic bacteria (Vibrio and Exiguobacterium) isolated from the eelgrass leaves decreased the abundances of suspended microplastics by 95.7% and 94.5%, respectively, in 48 h by accelerating the formation of biofilms on the microplastics. Therefore, eelgrass and its epiphytic bacteria facilitated the sinking of microplastics and increased the accumulation of microplastics in the sediments of seagrass meadows in coastal regions.

Potential hazards of biochar: The negative environmental impacts of biochar applications

Biochar has been widely used as an environmentally friendly material for soil improvement and remediation, water pollution control, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and other purposes because of its characteristics such as a large surface area, porous structure, and abundant surface O-containing functional groups. However, some surface properties (i.e., (i) some surface properties (i.e., organic functional groups and inorganic components), (ii) changes in pH), and (iii) chemical reactions (e.g., aromatic C ring oxidation) that occur between biochar and the application environment may result in the release of harmful components. In this study, biochars with a potential risk to the environment were classified according to their harmful components, surface properties, structure, and particle size, and the potential negative environmental effects of these biochars and the mechanisms inducing these negative effects were reviewed. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the negative environmental impacts of biochar on soil, water, and atmospheric environments. It also summarizes various technical methods of environment-related risk detection and evaluation of biochar application, thereby providing a baseline reference and guiding significance for future biochar selection and toxicity detection, evaluation, and avoidance.

Retention of thallium by natural minerals: A review

Though thallium (Tl) is usually present in trace amounts in natural environments, its biotoxicity is extremely high. With the development of mining, the metallurgy industry, and the growing application of Tl in high-tech fields, the threat of Tl to ecological environments and human health is increasing. Natural minerals, such as clay minerals, iron oxides, and manganese oxides, are natural Tl adsorbents due to their mineralogy and crystal structures. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of Tl adsorption by various natural minerals, compare the adsorption capacities of common soil minerals for Tl, and describe the limitations of traditional sequential extraction methods for identifying the chemical states of Tl on minerals and source of Tl. We also provide suggestions on future directions needed in Tl research including a) additional in-depth studies on the competitive adsorption of Tl by minerals; b) more direct comparison of Tl adsorption behavior from lab-based experiments with field observations to clarify the mechanisms of Tl adsorption by minerals under environmental conditions; c) more research data are needed to support the establishment and improvement of relevant research methods based on modern leading-edge technologies such as synchrotron radiation. Further, we suggest further research is needed in adsorption technologies used for Tl treatment. This is the first review on the research progress of Tl adsorption by natural minerals with the purpose of helping understanding the mechanisms of Tl migration and transformation controlled by natural minerals, and providing theoretical supports for the development of Tl adsorbents and the treatments of Tl pollution.

Effects on microbiomes and resistomes and the source-specific ecological risks of heavy metals in the sediments of an urban river

This study aims to better understand the effects of heavy metal enrichment on microbiomes and resistomes and the source-specific ecological risks of metals in the sediments of an urban river. Geo-accumulation index and enrichment factor suggested the river sediments were contaminated by Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in varying degrees. High-throughput sequencing-based metagenomics analysis identified 430 types of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), dominated by the multidrug, MLS, bacitracin, quinolone, and aminoglycoside ARGs, and 52 metal resistance genes (MRGs) mainly conferring resistance to zinc, copper, cadmium, lead, mercury and multiple metals. Spearman correlation analysis and Mantel test showed the heavy metal enrichment exerted significant effects on the microbial community, ARGs and MRGs. Source apportionment using positive matrix factorization revealed that natural source (42.8%) was the largest contributor of metals in the river sediments, followed by urban activities (35.4%) and a mixed source (21.7%). However, when incorporating the apportionment results into a modified risk model to evaluate the source-specific ecological risks, results showed human activities dominated the risks of metals. Comparatively, the urban activities majorly caused moderate- and considerable- ecological risks, while the mixed source with respect to agricultural and industrial activities contributed higher percentages on high- and extremely high- ecological risks.

Redox stress response and UV tolerance in the acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

The oxidative stress response represents a sum of antioxidative mechanisms that are essential for determining the adaptation and abundance of microorganisms in the environment. Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans are chemolithotrophic bacteria that obtain their energy from the oxidation of ferrous ion. Both microorganisms are important for bioleaching of sulfidic ores and both are tolerant to high levels of heavy metals and other factors that can induce oxidative stress. In this work, we compared the tolerance and response of L. ferriphilum and At. ferrooxidans to Fe³⁺, H₂O₂, K₂CrO₄, and UV-C radiation. We evaluated growth, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative damage to lipid membranes and DNA, and the activity of antioxidative proteins in cells exposed to these stressors. L. ferriphilum had higher cell density, lower ROS content and less lipid and DNA damage than At. ferrooxidans. Consistent with this, the activity levels of thioredoxin and superoxide dismutase in L. ferriphilum were upregulated and higher than in At. ferrooxidans. This indicated that L. ferriphilum has a higher capacity to respond to oxidative stress and to manage redox homeostasis. This capacity could largely contribute to the high abundance of this species in natural and anthropogenic sites.

Analysis of microbial community structure and diversity in surrounding rock soil of different waste dump sites in fushun western opencast mine

It is importance to understand the correlation between the physicochemical properties of different surrounding rock soil and microbial communities in Fushun western opencast mining for the ecological restoration of land after mine closure. In this study, two layers of soil samples were collected from four different areas in Fushun western opencast mining: coal gangue area (CGA), green mudstone area (GMA), oil shale area (OSA) and mixed area (MA). Then, the effects of different surrounding rock soil physicochemical properties on the microbial communities were explored using the High-throughput sequencing technique. A wide diversity of taxonomical groups were present in four soil cores, and many were correlated with soil physicochemical properties. The obvious differences in microbial communities between different areas showed the influence of different surrounding rock soil on the microbial communities were significant. Redundancy analysis and the network diagram confirmed that soil physicochemical properties pH (Pondus Hydrogenii)-AN (Available Nitrogen)-EC (Electronic Conductivity)-WC (Water Content)-TK (Total Nitrogen), Cd (Cadmium)-Ni (Nickel) had great influence on the microbial communities. Therefore, this study can provide scientific judgments for the different surrounding rock soil physicochemical properties in coal mining, microbial-mediated rock mineralization and biogeochemical cycles.

Divergent Patterns of Bacterial Community Structure and Function in Response to Estuarine Output in the Middle of the Bohai Sea

Understanding environment-community relationships under shifting environmental conditions helps uncover mechanisms by which environmental microbial communities manage to improve ecosystem functioning. This study investigated the microbial community and structure near the Yellow Sea River estuary in 12 stations across the middle of the Bohai Sea for over two seasons to elucidate the influence of estuarine output on them. We found that the dominant phyla in all stations were Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Planctomycetes. Alpha-diversity increased near the estuary and bacterial community structure differed with variation of spatiotemporal gradients. Among all the environmental factors surveyed, temperature, salinity, phosphate, silicon, nitrate, and total virioplankton abundance played crucial roles in controlling the bacterial community composition. Some inferred that community functions such as carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid metabolism, xenobiotics biodegradation, membrane transport, and environmental adaptation were much higher in winter; energy and nucleotide metabolism were lower in winter. Our results suggested that estuarine output had a great influence on the Bohai Sea environment and changes in the water environmental conditions caused by estuarine output developed distinctive microbial communities in the middle of the Bohai Sea. The distinctive microbial communities in winter demonstrated that the shifting water environment may stimulate changes in the diversity and then strengthen the predicted functions.

Bacterial and fungal diversity in the lorandite (TlAsS2) mine 'Allchar' in the Republic of North Macedonia

The Allchar mineral mine is one of the oldest arsenic-antimony mines in the Republic of North Macedonia. The mine is a well-known reservoir of the worldwide purest source of the thallium-bearing mineral, lorandite (TlAsS2). The current study evaluated the bacterial and fungal diversity of three As- and Tl-contaminated sites in Allchar mineral mine. We used a combination of high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatic analyses. Trace metal content was detected using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Our analysis showed the presence of 25 elements and confirmed a high concentration of As and Tl. Alpha diversity indices suggested a high diversity and evenness of bacterial and fungal communities. Bacterial phyla that dominated the environment were Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. Looking at the genus level, we found the following groups of bacteria: Chryseolinea, Opitutus, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, Terrimonas, Sphingomonas and Reyranella. For the fungi genera, we report Tetracladium sp., Coprinellus micaceus, Coprinus sp. from Ascomycota and Basidiomycota phyla in all sites. We also observed a high abundance of the fungal species Pilidium sp., Dendroclathra lignicola, Rosellinia desmazieri, Hypomyces rosellus and Coprinellus disseminatus. This study is the first to identify specific As- and Tl-tolerant fungal (Pilidium sp., Cladophialophora sp., Neobulgaria sp. and Mycena acicula) and bacterial (Trichococcus, Devosia, Litorilinea and Gimesia) genera from Allchar mine, suggesting bioremediation and industrial potential.

Thallium shifts the bacterial and fungal community structures in thallium mine waste rocks

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic metalloid and is considered a priority pollutant by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Currently, few studies have investigated the distribution patterns of bacterial and fungal microbiomes in Tl-impacted environments. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing to assess the bacterial and fungal profiles along a gradient of Tl contents in Tl mine waste rocks in southwestern China. Our results showed that Tl had an important, but different influence on the bacterial and fungal diversity indices. Using linear regression analysis, we furtherly divided the dominant bacterial and fungal groups into three distinct microbial sub-communities thriving at high, moderate, and low levels of Tl. Furthermore, our results also showed that Tl is also an important environmental variable that regulates the distribution patterns of ecological clusters and indicator genera. Interestingly, the microbial groups enriched in the samples with high Tl levels were mainly involved in metal and nutrient cycling. Taken together, our results have provided useful information about the responses of bacterial and fungal groups to Tl contamination.

Large-scale evaluation of deposition, bioavailability and ecological risks of the potentially toxic metals in the sediment cores of the hotspot coral reef ecosystems (Persian Gulf, Iran)

Coral reefs of the Persian Gulf are vulnerable to the potentially toxic metals (PTMs) accumulated in the ambient sediments. Nonetheless, few studies have investigated the PTMs pollution and risk in the hotspot coral ecosystems of the Persian Gulf at a large-scale. Hereupon, this study focused on the PTMs contamination, their potential ecological risks, historical depositions, geochemical controls and the plausible pollution sources in the core sediments (0-40 cm) collected from the ten coral ecosystems of the Persian Gulf, Iran. Both total and fraction analysis indicated considerable metal pollution levels. Contamination was steadily decreasing towards the bottom of the sediment core, revealing the impact of a recent anthropogenic input. High metal association with the exchangeable and other mobile fractions was observed, indicating their high bioavailability. Of all the elements analyzed, toxic metals Cd, Hg and As exhibited the highest potential ecological risk (RI). Site rank index (SRI), modified degree of contamination (_mCd), and contamination severity index (CSI) based approaches identified stations ST5, ST9 and ST10 as the most contaminated sites of the study area. The same stations were also found to possess considerable ecological risk. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the stations located in the zone of the highest anthropogenic impact contain pollution sources for all the metals analyzed, whereas areas with low anthropogenic activity are mainly affected by the river runoff and urban emissions.

Using Zn isotopes to trace Zn sources and migration pathways in paddy soils around mining area

Paddy soils around mining areas suffer from the great threat of heavy metal pollution. The traditional source-tracing methods based on metal concentrations limit our ability to quantify the sources of heavy metals and trace their transport processes to paddy soils. In this study, Zn isotope compositions of paddy soils in Dabaoshan mine area, a typical sulfide deposit in southern China, have been systematically studied. According to a plot between 1/Zn (i.e. inverse concentration) and δ⁶⁶Zn value, all the polluted paddy soils fall on the mixing line between acid mine drainage precipitate (AMD-precipitate) and fertilizer while the unpolluted paddy soil falls on the mixing line between fertilizer and bedrock. This indicates the mixing of Zn sources at least three end-members: the mining end-member (i.e. AMD-precipitate), the agricultural end-member (i.e. fertilizer), and bedrock whose geochemical signature is often overprinted by the former two sources around the mining area. The quantitative calculations to apportion the end-member's contributions show that the mining activity contributes most Zn in the paddy soils with an average of ∼66.2%. The contribution of mining activities has significant spatial variations. Specifically, the mining activities have relatively low impacts on the lower reach and the deep soil. Additionally, the apparent Zn isotope fractionation between AMD and AMD-precipitate (Δ⁶⁶Zn_{AMD-precipitate} - _AMD of -0.35 to -0.08‰) in the tailings dam suggests that Zn cations in AMD coprecipitated with the secondary Fe-bearing minerals (e.g. jarosite and goethite). After being discharged from the tailings dam, Zn is mainly carried by the Fe-oxide minerals and migrated during surface runoff. Our study highlights the contribution of human activities to the Zn pollution in the paddy soils and the key role of Fe-bearing minerals in the migration of Zn. These findings provide a scientific base for the development of policy for pollution control in mining-affected region.

Microbial insights into the biogeochemical features of thallium occurrence: A case study from polluted river sediments

Thallium (Tl) is a trace element with extreme toxicity. Widespread Tl pollution in riverine systems, mainly due to escalating mining and smelting activities of Tl-bearing sulfide minerals, has attracted increasing attention. Insights into the function of the microbial communities with advanced characterization tools are critical for understanding the biogeochemical cycle of Tl. Herein, microbial communities and their adaptive evolution strategies in river sediments from a representative Tl-bearing pyrite mine area in southern China were profiled via 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and shotgun metagenomic analysis. In total, 64 phyla and 778 genera of microorganisms were observed in the studied sediments. The results showed that pH, Tl, Pb, Zn and total organic carbon (TOC) had a significant influence on microbial community structure. Some important reductive microorganisms (such as Erysipelothrix, Geobacter, desulfatiferula, desulfatihabadium and fusibacter) were involved in the biogeochemical cycle of Tl. The ruv, rec, ars and other resistance genes enhanced the tolerance of microorganisms to Tl. The study suggested that relevant C, N and S cycle genes were the main metabolic paths of microorganisms surviving in the high Tl-polluted environment. The findings were critical for establishment, operation and regulation in the microbial treatment of Tl containing or related wastewater.

Critical insight and indication on particle size effects towards uranium release from uranium mill tailings: Geochemical and mineralogical aspects

Uranium (U) is both chemically toxic and radioactive. Uranium mill tailings (UMTs) are one of the most important sources of U contamination in the environment, wherein the mechanisms that control U release from UMTs with different granularities have not yet been well understood. Herein, the release behaviours and underlying release mechanisms of U from UMTs with five different particle size fractions (<0.45, 0.45-0.9, 0.9-2, 2-6 and 6-10 mm) were studied with a well-defined leaching test (ANS 16.1) combined with geochemical and mineralogical characterizations. The results showed that the most remarkable U release unexpectedly emerged from UMT_{2-6 mm}; in contrast, the smallest particle size UMT_{<0.45 mm} contributed to the least U release. The predominant mechanism of U release from UMT_{2-6 mm} was the oxidative dissolution of U-bearing sulfides, while abundant gypsum present in UMT_{<0.45 mm} inhibited U release. The study highlights the importance of combined geochemical and mineralogical investigation when performing leaching tests of mineral-containing hazardous materials such as UMTs with consideration of particle size effects. The findings also indicate that elevating the content of gypsum and avoiding the oxidation of sulfides can effectively help immobilize and minimize the residual U release from the UMTs.

Geochemical transfer of cadmium in river sediments near a lead-zinc smelter

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic element and non-essential to human. Herein, the source and fate of Cd were examined in a typical sediment profile from the North River, South China, which was affected by the massive Pb-Zn smelting activities for decades. An exceptionally high enrichment of Cd, 107-441 mg/kg, was observed across the whole profile. Approximately 50-75% of Cd was retained in the weak acid soluble fraction. Risk assessment based on geoaccumulation index (I_geo), potential ecological risk index (E_rⁱ), bioavailable metal index (BMI) and toxic risk index (TRI) further indicated an extremely strong degree of potential ecological pollution and high toxic risks. The mineralogical composition of particles from the sediment profile exhibited the presence of pyrite, magnetite, wurtzite and greenockite. This further confirmed that Cd was migrated from smelting slags to the North River basin and enriched in sediment profile. Sediment Cd speciation analysis also implied a possible transformation of Cd from metal oxides in smelting slags to adsorbed phases and carbonates, which enhances the bioavailability of Cd. The findings indicate proper countermeasures or remediation approaches should be promptly taken towards high ecological risks of Cd arising from the depth profile extending nearly 1 m, due to lead-zinc smelting related activities.

Legacy of multiple heavy metal(loid)s contamination and ecological risks in farmland soils from a historical artisanal zinc smelting area

Farmland soil contamination of heavy metal(loid)s (HM) derived from smelting activities is a global concern, owing to its potential threat for human health through food chain. This study aims to evaluate total contents and bioavailability of HMs (Pb, Zn, Tl, Cd, Cu, As, Ag, Co, Cr and Ni) in farmland soils distributed over ten different villages from a former artisanal zinc smelting area in the northwest Guizhou province, China. The results showed that most of the studied soils still exhibited exceptionally high enrichment of Pb, Zn, Cd and As. High levels of bioavailable HMs were also observed in some samples, which may enter the human food chain through agricultural activities. Further analyses by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (STEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed the presence of Zn smelting by-products such as Fe oxides, ZnO and PbSO₄ even in nanoscale particles retained by the soils. Elemental mapping by EDS confirmed a close association of the studied HMs with the smelting waste particles. All these results signify that high levels of HM-contamination from historical artisanal zinc smelting activities still persist and threaten the health of local residents, despite the fact that the major industrial-derived-contamination period ended >15 years ago. Our findings highlight pivotal concerns in similar artisanal-smelting-affected farmland soils of suspected contamination, due to less-expected toxic elements such as Tl, which may cause high ecological health risks.

Effects and mechanisms of mineral amendment on thallium mobility in highly contaminated soils

Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic element, whose toxicity is even higher than mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. It is of great significance to hinder the migration and transfer of Tl from soils to the plants. A synthetic mineral amendment (SMA), mainly composed of different silicates, was evaluated for its effects on the transformation and retention of Tl in two typical highly Tl-contaminated soils from Southwest China. The results indicated that the addition of mineral amendment increased the soil of the pH by 0.46-2.13 units and distinctly reduced the content of active thallium in the soils. The extent of Tl reduction was related to the morphological characteristics of the original soil In particular, the application of the mineral amendment transformed 25.8-52.5% of the active Tl fractions in the soils to the residual fraction at 60 d. Adding mineral amendment to the soils can provide conditions to facilitate Tl to enter the silicate crystal lattice. The results of XPS evidenced that the proportion of Tl(I) in the soil was greatly reduced after adding the mineral amendment.

Effects of biochar on soil microbial community and functional genes of a landfill cover three years after ecological restoration

Landfills, as the most common approach to disposing of municipal solid waste worldwide, disturb native ecosystems and create a need for ecological restoration. The restoration of landfill cover with biochar has shown immediate potential to improve soil microbial functions within one year. However, such characteristics could change after a longer period of time. Here, soil properties, microbial communities, and microbial functional genes related to nutrient cycling were investigated three years after the biochar amendment of the topsoil of a subtropical landfill cover. The results showed that the levels of soil organic matter, water content, total carbon (C), total nitrogen (N) and total phosphorus (P) of biochar-amended soils were higher than those of control soil. Different soil microbial community structures were observed in the biochar-amended and control soils. Nine phyla, including Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria, but not Actinobacteria or Chloroflexi, were enriched in the biochar-amended soil. Although the impact of biochar on shaping microbial communities increased after a longer period of restoration, no differences were observed in soils that were amended using different biochar:soil ratios. The abundances of functional genes related to C and N cycling decreased, whereas those of genes related to P cycling were higher in soils that received biochar amendment. This finding suggests that compared with the control soil, biochar-amended soils were less active in processes involved in C and N cycling but enhanced in processes related to P cycling. This study can serve as a reference for future ecological restoration of degraded lands using biochar.

A Functionalized Silicate Adsorbent and Exploration of Its Adsorption Mechanism

Active silicate materials have good adsorption and passivation effects on heavy metal pollutants. The experimental conditions for the preparation of active silicate heavy metal adsorbent (ASHMA) and the adsorption of Cu(II) by ASHMA were investigated. The optimum preparation conditions of ASHMA were as follows: 200 mesh quartz sand as the raw material, NaOH as an activating agent, NaOH/quartz sand = 0.45 (mass fraction), and calcination at 600 °C for 60 min. Under these conditions, the active silicon content of the adsorbent was 22.38% and the utilization efficiency of NaOH reached 89.11%. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) on the ASHMA was analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, which provided fits of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. The separation coefficient (R_L) and adsorption constant (n) showed that the adsorbent favored the adsorption of Cu(II), and the maximum adsorption capacity (Q_max) estimated by the Langmuir isotherm was higher than that of 300 mg/L. Furthermore, adsorption by ASHMA was a relatively rapid process, and adsorption equilibrium could be achieved in 1 min. The adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the activating agent destroyed the crystal structure of the quartz sand under calcination, and formed Si-O-Na and Si-OH groups to realize activation. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption process involved the removal of Cu(II) by the formation of Si-O-Cu bonds on the surface of the adsorbent. The above results indicated that the adsorbent prepared from quartz sand had a good removal effect on Cu(II).

Evaluating the mobility and labile of As and Sb using diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) in the sediments of Nansi Lake, China

Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) contamination in the aquatic environment have received significant attention recently due to the potential risks they pose. However, there have been few studies about the simultaneous behaviors of As and Sb, resulting in a poor understanding of their occurrence at the sediment-water interface (SWI), especially at the millimeter scale. In this study, soluble and labile concentrations of As and Sb were investigated using high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) in Nansi Lake, China, respectively. Results showed mean soluble concentrations of As and Sb were 5.00 μg/L and 2.05 μg/L, respectively. DGT-labile concentrations of As and Sb ranged from 0 to 0.80 μg/L and from 0.50 to 0.67 μg/L, respectively. In the vertical profile, different tends for DGT-labile concentration As and Sb were observed. The reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides was considered as a crucial driver for As release and mobility, which was supported by its significant correlation (r = 0.348, p < .05) with Fe. While DGT-labile Sb concentration was negatively correlated with DGT-labile Fe (r = -0.24, p < .05) and Mn (r = -0.324, p < .05), this may be attributed to the absorption of the Sb(III) by the green rusts in sub-oxic and mildly alkaline environments. The significant differences between DGT-labile concentration and community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction were shown using a linear regression relationship, indicating that BCR chemical fractions cannot reflect the mobility of As and Sb in the sediment. Furthermore, the net diffusive fluxes of As and Sb based on DGT-labile concentration were 0.24 and - 0.56 μg∙m^-2∙day^-1, respectively. There was a potential risk of toxicity to the overlying water from As.

Hyperaccumulation and transport mechanism of thallium and arsenic in brake ferns (Pteris vittata L.): A case study from mining area

Both thallium (Tl) and arsenic (As) bear severe toxicity. Brake fern (Pteris vittata L.) is well-known for its hyperaccumulation capacity of As, yet its role on Tl accumulation remains unknown. Herein, brake ferns growing near an As tailing site in Yunnan, Southwestern China are for the first time discovered as a co-hyperaccumulator of both Tl and As. The results showed that the brake ferns extracted both As and Tl efficiently from the soils into the fronds. The studied ferns growing on Tl and As co-polluted soils were found to accumulate extremely high levels of both As (7215-11110 mg/kg) and Tl (6.47-111 mg/kg). Conspicuously high bio-accumulation factor (BCF) was observed for As (7.8) and even higher for Tl (28.4) among these co-hyperaccumulators, wherein the contents of As and Tl in contaminated soils were 1240 ± 12 and 3.91 ± 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. The applied advanced characterization techniques (e.g. transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)) indicated a preferential uptake of Tl(I) while simultaneous accumulation of As (III) and As(V) from the Tl(I)/Tl(III)-As (III)/As(V) co-existent rhizospheric soils. The findings benefit the phytoremediation practice and pose implications for managing and restoring Tl-As co-contaminated soils in other countries.

Selectively enrichment of antibiotics and ARGs by microplastics in river, estuary and marine waters

The partition of antibiotics and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) between the microplastics (MPs) and the surrounding water with various salinity are still unclear. In this study, we hypothesized that adsorption of antibiotics on MPs might cause a significant change of the structure of microbial communities, diversity and abundance of ARGs on MPs and this might be further affected by change of salinity. In this study, we investigated adsorption of four common antibiotics (sulfamerazine, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and tylosin) to polyethylene (PE) MPs in river, estuary and marine waters, and the differences of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) and bacterial communities on MPs and in the three waters. The results showed that MPs can enrich antibiotics, ARGs and microbes from the surrounding water. Elevated salinity could reduce adsorption of antibiotics to MPs and the abundance of ARGs. For example, MPs can concentrate more antibiotics and ARGs in the fresh river water than in the estuary and the marine waters. In addition, ARGs and bacterial communities on MPs at various salinity were significantly different under the pressure of four antibiotics. On MPs, sul1, sulA/folP-01, tetA, tetC, tetX and ermE increased significantly but a few new ARGs such as sulA/folP-01 and tetA appeared. The structure of the bacterial communities on MPs was different from the surrounding water since some bacteria species found on MPs were barely detected in the surrounding water while some genera on MPs vanished after exposure to antibiotics. As the antibiotics adsorbed and the ARGs on MPs decreased with the water salinity, the structure of the communities on MPs thus varied with salinity change. These findings are important to understand the effects of MPs on the transport, fate and ecological risk of antibiotics and ARGs in different aquatic environments.

Temporal sedimentary record of thallium pollution in an urban lake: An emerging thallium pollution source from copper metallurgy

Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic metal with high risk. Sediment samples from a well dated sediment core retrieved from a heavily polluted urban lake were measured to assess the magnitude of Tl pollution and reveal its transfer mechanisms within the lake. The results show that the lake has experienced serious Tl pollution during the past 60 years, owing to a large influx of Tl-bearing wastes mostly from a neighboring copper (Cu) smelter. The Tl contents in the sediment core at different depths generally correlated positively with the production scale of Cu smelting activities in the past. Further mineralogical analysis on the electrostatic precipitator dust from the Cu smelter and highly-polluted samples from the sediment core by electronic microscopy and X-ray diffraction suggested that Tl was primarily bound to quartz and aluminosilicates. Large quantities of Tl were also observed in diatom frustules collected from the sediments, suggesting a potentially significant role of biogenic silicates in the uptake and transfer of Tl in the sediment-water system. The findings indicate a new and emerging pollution source of thallium arising from copper metallurgy activities. The results also highlight the necessity of strengthened monitoring and regulations towards Tl pollution in environmental systems impacted by Cu smelting activities in China and other nations.

Thallium isotopic fractionation in industrial process of pyrite smelting and environmental implications

Thallium (Tl) is typical rare element with severe toxicity comparable to Hg and Pb. To track Tl pollution, isotopic fractionation of Tl was evaluated during pyrite smelting for sulfuric acid production. Large variations in Tl isotope compositions were observed among the pyrite ore (PO) and its four different smelting wastes. The starting raw PO had an ε²⁰⁵Tl value of +1.28. The fluidized-bed furnace slag generated by high-temperature smelting had the heaviest ε²⁰⁵Tl (+16.24) in the system. Meanwhile, the boiler fly ash (ε²⁰⁵Tl = +8.34), cyclone fly ash (ε²⁰⁵Tl = +2.17), and electrostatic precipitation fly ash (ε²⁰⁵Tl = -1.10), with decreasing grain sizes during the treatment processes, were characterized by elevated levels of Tl contents and substantial enrichment in the light Tl isotopes relative to the furnace slag. Further calculation and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy indicated that Tl isotope fractionation could be governed by both Rayleigh-type fractionation and adsorption of volatilized Tl by particles of various grain sizes. According to the substantial differences in the PO from its smelting wastes and the measurement precision of isotopic fractionation, it is suggested that Tl isotopes can serve as a new tool for tracing pollution of Tl.

Thallium contamination, health risk assessment and source apportionment in common vegetables

As an element with well-known toxicity, excessive thallium (Tl) in farmland soils, may threaten food security and induce extreme risks to human health. Identification of key contamination sources is prerequisite for remediation technologies. This study aims to examine the contamination level, health risks and source apportionment of Tl in common vegetables from typical farmlands distributed over a densely populated residential area in a pyrite mine city, which has been exploiting Tl-bearing pyrite minerals over 50 years. Results showed excessive Tl levels were exhibited in most of the vegetables (0.16-20.33 mg/kg) and alarming health risks may induce from the vegetables via the food chain. Source apportionment of Tl contamination in vegetables was then evaluated by using Pb isotope fingerprinting technique. Both vegetables and soils were characterized with overall low ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb. This indicated that a significant contribution may be ascribed to the anthropogenic activities involving pyrite deposit exploitation, whose raw material and salgs were featured with lower ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb. Further calculation by binary mixing model suggested that pyrite mining and smelting activities contributed 54-88% to the thallium contamination in vegetables. The results highlighted that Pb isotope tracing is a suitable technique for source apportionment of Tl contamination in vegetables and prime contamination from pyrite mining/smelting activities urges authorities to initiate proper practices of remediation.

Physicochemical features, metal availability and enzyme activity in heavy metal-polluted soil remediated by biochar and compost

Biochar and compost have been widely used for pollution remediation of heavy metals in soil. However, little research was conducted to explore the efficiency of biochar, compost and their combination to reduce heavy metals availability, and the effects of their additive on soil biological properties are often neglected. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of biochar, compost and their combination on availability of heavy metals, physicochemical features and enzyme activities in soil. Results showed that adding amendments to polluted soil significantly altered soil properties. Compared to the separate addition of biochar or compost, their combined application was more effective to improve soil pH, organic matter (OM), organic carbon (TOC) and available potassium (AK). All amendments significantly decreased the availability of Cd and Zn, but slightly activated As and Cu. In addition, soil enzyme activities were activated by compost and inhibited by biochar, but exhibited highly variable responses to their combinations. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that electrical conductivity (EC) and AK were the most important environmental factors affecting metal availability and soil enzyme activities including dehydrogenase, catalase, β-glucosidase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase except for protease and invertase. Availability of As, Cu, Cd and Zn affected dehydrogenase, catalase and urease activities. These results indicated that biochar, compost and their combination have significant effects on physicochemical features, metals availability and enzyme activities in heavy metal-polluted soil.
