Abstract
This study demonstrates a simple approach to synthesize green Cu particles stabilized by poly(n-vinyl)pyrrolidone (PVP): the latter acts as stabilizer and dispersant, and its presence in solution eliminates the need for an inert atmosphere. Synthetic parameters were tuned to obtain particles with diameters >200 nm, to be human-safe and prevent nano-cytotoxicity. PVP and reductant concentrations, with reaction times, were varied to investigate their effect on colloidal stability, kinetics, and particles size. Particles were fully characterized, morphologically and spectroscopically. Cu@PVP colloids were washed, to remove unbound PVP and reactions byproducts, and then embedded in chitosan (CS) polymer matrix, to prepare self-standing films for food packaging applications. Films were obtained by a simple solvent evaporation protocol. Pellicles were characterized by common analytical techniques; viscoelastic properties, water uptake, and Cu2+ ionic release were investigated, as well. The films antimicrobial efficacy was also tested against three different model fungi responsible for agrifood spoilage.

Abstract
In recent years, environmental concerns regarding the persistence of petroleum-based plastic food packaging have increased, prompting the exploration of biopolymer alternatives. Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), a derivative of chitosan, exhibits superior water-soluble film properties, making it an ideal material for degradable food packaging applications. This study comprehensively examines the synthesis methods and properties of CMCS, with a particular emphasis on recent advancements in CMCS-based food packaging films. Various functionalized CMCS-based food packaging films, including coblended, nanoparticle composite, plant extract composite, and cross-linked films, were reviewed. The practical applications of CMCS-based food packaging films and edible coatings in food preservation are also showcased. This study emphasizes that the notable compatibility of CMCC with a range of polymers and additives has facilitated the development of multifunctional packaging films. These innovations, including antibacterial, antioxidant, and smart-indicating variants, have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in preserving fruits, aquatic products, poultry, and other perishable goods.

Abstract
Natural polymer based food packaging has attracted more and more attention, but the lack of active functions of natural polymer hinders its application in the field of active packaging. In this study, chlorogenic acid carbon dots (CGA-CDs) was synthesized mildly using natural plant polyphenol CGA as carbon source, and CGA functionalized layered clays (LDHs@CGA) was introduced as reinforcing agent. Alg active films were fabricated by solution casting method using natural polysaccharide-alginate (Alg), CGA-CDs and LDHs@CGA. The results showed that the average particle size of the synthesized CGA-CDs was ~2.0 nm, with obvious graphitized structure inside and active groups (-OH and -NH2, etc.) outside, showing obvious UV absorption and antibacterial activity. With the addition of CGA-CDs, UV barrier, antibacterial, thermal stability, hydrophobicity and flexibility of Alg active films were significantly improved. When the amount of CGA-CDs reached 2 %, UV transmission (280 nm) and of Alg active films was only 2.66 %, which was reduced by 88.1 % compared with pure Alg film. The highest antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached 86.0 % and 91.6 %, respectively. Freshness preservation experiment of fresh-cut apples indicated that Alg active coating incorporating CGA-CDs maintained the lowest browning index and mildew. These results indicate that the excellent active functions of CGA-CDs can promote the application of Alg matrix in the field of natural polymer active packaging.

Abstract
In this work, chitosan (Cs) was blended with different concentrations of Origanum majorana extract (OmE) for the formation of food packaging films. Based on the utilized volumes of OmE (2.5, 5, and 7.5 mL) that were mixed with 27.5, 25, and 22.5 mL of Cs, there different film samples (2.5 % OmE loaded Cs film, 5 % OmE loaded Cs film and 7.5 % OmE loaded Cs film) were obtained and compared with the film of pure Cs. The extraction yields of OmE were found to be 13 g and 10.4 g % when using ethyl acetate and methanol, respectively, with total phenolic content measured at 889.30 μg GAE/g for the ethyl acetate extract and 810.21 μg GAE/g for the methanol extract, indicating a substantial amount of bioactive compounds available for formulation. Antimicrobial activity was assessed against various foodborne pathogens, with the 7.5 % OmE-loaded Cs film demonstrating the highest efficacy, achieving inhibition zones of 27 mm against E. coli and 25 mm against S. aureus. This research underscores the potential of Cs-based films enriched with O. majorana extract as a viable solution for active food packaging, addressing environmental concerns and food safety.

Abstract
Eutectic solvents (ESs) have shown great efficiency on increasing the solubility, stability, and bioactivity of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in recent research studies. Curcumin is an important API driven from natural plants, which displayed a series of biofunctions like antibacterials, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities etc. However, its poor water solubility and stability hindered its further clinic application. Herein, a series of novel ESs based on matrine and fatty acids (i.e., octanoic acid, decanoic acid, and lauric acid) were developed. The phase behavior and cytotoxicity of these ESs were investigated. Moreover, the prepared ESs displayed excellent ability on enhancing the solubility of curcumin with the highest solubility being 28 mg/mL at 298 K, which was nearly 50000-fold than that in water. The curcumin showed high stability in ESs, where only 10% of curcumin decomposed under light irradiation for 6 h. Furthermore, biofilms based on these ES solutions of curcumin have been prepared and displayed high antioxidant and antibacterial activities. To summarize, the prepared eutectic systems provide a new strategy for further application of curcumin.

Abstract
Atmosphere-controlled high-voltage electrospray (AHES) was utilised to modify the structure of chitosan (CS) films. The applied voltage in the AHES process ranged from 60 to 100 kV, with variations in the O2 content of the propellant gas from 0 to 100 %. The number density of cations in the charging environment reached 600 × 105 cations/cm3. Under these specific conditions, the one-step AHES procedure facilitated the protonation of the amine groups in the CS molecular chains, resulting in a notable increase in electrical conductivity by over 95 % and tensile elongation by over 100 %. The generation of reactive oxygen species during the AHES process also improved the antibacterial properties of the charged CS films, as evidenced by a more than 36 % increase in the inhibition zone diameter. The treated (AHES) films were employed for preserving fresh-cut muskmelon slices. These films maintained satisfactory sensory quality and effectively controlled water evaporation for up to 3 days when utilised as the inner layer of the packaging. These enhancements were achieved through a single-step AHES treatment, without the addition of chemicals or the need to alter the ambient temperature (25 °C ± 5°C). Consequently, AHES presents itself as a viable method for modifying the electrostatic characteristics of CS films and can be extended to various other materials.

Abstract
To improve the limited mechanical and water barrier properties of chitosan film while granting extra functionalities simultaneously, present study pioneered the incorporation of chitosan film with newly developed essential oil (EO)-based hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES, EO:octanoic acid (OA), EO:menthol (ME) and OA:ME:EO). The highest tensile strength (66.22 MPa) and elongation at break (45.99 %) were obtained in OA:ME:EO-40 and OA:ME:EO-80 films, respectively. The OA:EO-based films showed excellent and stable hydrophobicity. HDESs also endowed film with additional functionalities including thermal stability, bio-compatibility, controlled release, antioxidant, and antibacterial capacity. The extension of the storage period of strawberry treated with OA:EO-containing films confirmed their preservation ability. Compared with ME:EO and OA:ME:EO, OA:EO had better compatibility with chitosan matrix and could serve as a promising plasticizer for strengthening functionalities of chitosan film. These results also promote application of HDESs as emerging plasticizers in manufacture of other polymer-based packaging film.

Abstract
This study focuses on the extraction of phenolic compounds from the fermentation of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Gloeophyllum trabeum. The main goal was to synthesize phenol/chitosan microspheres and PVA films and characterized using FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM, and mechanical tests to evaluate their physical, chemical, and mechanical properties for antimicrobial packaging applications. Homogeneous chitosan microspheres loaded with lignin-derived phenols were obtained, showing controlled release of antimicrobial compounds. The incorporation of phenolic microspheres into PVA/chitosan films resulted in significant improvements in mechanical properties: the films exhibited an elastic modulus of 36.14 ± 3.73 MPa, tensile strength of 12.01 ± 1.14 MPa, and elongation at break of 65.19 ± 5.96%. Thermal tests revealed that chitosan-containing films had enhanced thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures (T10) reaching 116.77 °C, compared to 89.28 °C for pure PVA. In terms of antimicrobial activity, PVA/chitosan/phenol films effectively reduced Lactobacillus growth and milk acidity, maintaining quality for up to 96 h at room temperature, outperforming controls with acetic acid and H2O2. The films also inhibit yeast growth for one week. In conclusion, phenols can be effective antimicrobial agents in dairy, but their use should be monitored. Additionally, PVA/chitosan-phenol films offer biodegradability, antimicrobial properties, and sustainability for diverse applications.

Abstract
Antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging films play a crucial role in extending food shelf life, maintaining quality, and enhancing safety by inhibiting microbial growth and slowing oxidation processes. However, most commercial preservative films suffer from limited antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Moreover, these films are made from petroleum-based materials that degrade into microplastics, resulting in environmental contamination and potential health risks for humans. Herein, an antibacterial and antioxidant food packaging film (CS-SAP@R) is developed by integrating star-shaped amphiphilic polypeptides (SAP) and resveratrol (R) into the chitosan (CS) matrix. The incorporation of SAP not only effectively addresses the existing compatibility issues between the highly hydrophobic resveratrol and water-soluble CS film, but also significantly enhances the antimicrobial properties of CS. Additionally, the well-integrated resveratrol molecules endow the film with superior antioxidant properties. Furthermore, CS-SAP@R has achieved bacterial killing rates of 97.31% against E. coli and 99.05% against S. aureus. The enhanced characteristics of the CS-SAP@R film contribute to its exceptional preservation performance, effectively extending the shelf life of perishable products by ≈3 days when stored at 4 °C. These remarkable attributes underscore the benefits of polypeptide-based biopolymers and demonstrate the potential applicability of the CS-SAP@R film in effectively safeguarding perishable products.

Abstract
The evolution of production and lifestyle patterns has led to an increasing demand for multifunctional packaging materials that exceed the capabilities of traditional single-function options, thus driving continuous innovation in the field. In this study, a novel approach is presented, where camellia seed cake protein, derived from camellia seed oil production by-products, is incorporated into sodium alginate to create biobased active packaging films. The antioxidant and UV-shielding properties of the sodium alginate-camellia seed cake protein films are enhanced by the incorporation of camellia seed cake protein. A closely intertwined structure is created between sodium alginate and camellia seed cake protein through electrostatic interactions, resulting in effective water vapor barrier capabilities. Furthermore, the active packaging films exhibit antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, providing significant advantages for fruit preservation. This research is essential in delaying fruit spoilage, extending shelf life, and providing new insights into the development of biobased multifunctional food packaging materials.

Abstract
Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, exhibits significant antifungal properties, making it a valuable compound for various applications in agriculture food preservation, and biomedicine. The present study aimed to assess the antifungal properties of chitosan-modified films using sol-gel derivatives (CS:ZnO) or graphene-filled chitosan, (CS:GO and CS:rGO) against two strains of fungi that are the most common cause of food spoilage: Aspergillus flavus ATCC 9643 and Penicillium expansum DSM 1282. The results indicate important differences in the antifungal activity of native chitosan films and zinc oxide-modified chitosan films. CS:ZnO nanocomposites (2:1 and 5:1) completely inhibited spore germination of the two tested fungal strains. Furthermore, a decrease in spore viability was observed after exposure to CS:Zn films. Significant differences in the permeability of cell envelopes were observed in the A. flavus. Moreover, the genotoxicity of the materials against two cell lines, human BJ fibroblasts and human KERTr keratinocytes, was investigated. Our studies showed that the tested nanocomposites did not exhibit genotoxicity towards human skin fibroblasts, and significant damage in the DNA of keratinocytes treated with CS:ZnO composites. Nanocomposites based on chitosan may help reduce synthetic fungicides and contribute to sustainable food production and food preservation practices.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the characteristics of composites fabricated from cellulose (CL) and chitosan (CS) blends that were reinforced with different tannic acid (TA) and gallic acid (GA) concentrations. The structure and antibacterial activity of CL/CS composite films were investigated with the addition of TA and GA. The composite films were subjected to mechanical, water contact angle (WCA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and antibacterial activity tests. The FTIR results and the uniform dense SEM images confirmed the interaction of TA and GA with the CL/CS blends. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of films with 5 wt% TA and GA improved by 23.02 %. The tensile strength of the CCTA-3 film was 27.67 MPa, demonstrating higher tensile properties compared to films made from CL and CS blend film (13.20 MPa). The prepared films also showed increased resistance to moisture and water, as indicated by their higher water contact angle (WCA) values (59.43°). The antibacterial activity of the films was effective against food-borne bacteria such as S. aureus and E. coli due to the addition of TA and GA. The shelf-life of cherry tomatoes increased by approximately 15 days when covered in CCTA-3 instead of polyethylene film. Based on the results, CL/CS blend films containing TA could be beneficial for use in active food packaging.

Abstract
Owing to their extremely small size, carbon-quantum-dots (CQDs) can cross biological barriers, which makes them attractive for many biomedical and other applications. CQDs can retain key-chemical features and associated functionalities of the molecular sources they are derived from, provided a suitable synthesis method is used at relative mild carbonization temperatures. Here we demonstrate that CQDs hydrothermally-derived from chitosan or 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium-chloride (HAC)-chitosan under pressurized conditions at 180 °C have a comparable elemental and molecular composition, as determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform-infrared spectroscopy. In addition, both types of CQDs generated reactive-oxygen-species as an added functionality alien to their molecular carbon sources. As a result, CQDs exhibited stronger antibacterial properties against a Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and a Gram-negative Escherichia coli strain, while both molecular HAC-chitosan as well as CQDs derived from it had stronger antibacterial properties than molecular chitosan and chitosan CQDs due to the possession of quaternary ammonium groups in HAC-chitosan. Therewith, carbonization of chitosan and HAC-chitosan yields enhanced properties that can be beneficial in a high variety of different applications, including promotion of healing and bacterial infection control, preservation of food and beverages, pesticide control in agriculture and horticulture, water treatment and in many cosmetics and personal care products.

Abstract
Chitosan (Cs) being a natural biopolymer serves as an excellent template to construct active packaging materials for achieving sustainable development. In this study, Cs was chemically modified via epoxide ring opening click reaction using vinyl epoxide to obtain a novel chitosan vinyl epoxide (Cs-VE) derivative with hydroxyl and olefinic functional groups. The Cs-VE transparent film was fabricated through the eco-friendly solution casting technique. A meticulous investigation into the chemical structure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized films was conducted using FT-IR, 1H NMR and XRD analyses. The thermal stability and homogeneity of the film were verified by thermogram and FE-SEM images respectively. Improved mechanical properties (tensile strength of 24.64 MPa and 12.08 % elongation at break) and excellent UV-light blocking ability (9.3 % transmittance at 350 nm and 22.15 % transparency at 600 nm) were observed. Also, important parameters such as water vapor permeability (WVP), swelling degree, water solubility and UV-barrier properties were found to be adequate for food packaging application. Similarly, enhanced antioxidant activity with 27.2 % and 73.6 % radical scavenging against DPPH and ABTS radicals respectively was observed for the synthesized Cs-VE film. The film showed antimicrobial activity against both bacteria and fungi. These results along with food packaging studies on Grewia asiatica fruit established the developed Cs-VE film as a suitable candidate for active food packaging application.

Abstract
To develop functional, sustainable and eco-friendly active packaging materials as alternatives to plastic films, we successfully prepared Ginkgo biloba leaf polysaccharide-stabilized selenium nanomaterials (Se-GBLP). Se-GBLP with glutathione peroxidase-like activity could efficiently remove harmful reactive oxygen species. As a functional additive, Se-GBLP was incorporated into degradable chitosan (CS) to fabricate CS/Se-GBLP films. The addition of Se-GBLP improved the mechanical properties, UV-visible light barrier performance, water vapor permeability, and antioxidant activity of the films. Preservation experiments demonstrated CS/Se-GBLP film could maintain quality and prolong the storage time of bananas and cherry tomatoes. It was the first time to use selenium-based nanozyme for fruit preservation. This work offered a cost-effective solution to reduce post-harvest losses, increasing sustainability and profitability. Future research should focus on more factors affecting freshness such as variety, maturity, harvest and storage conditions to improve preservation, as well as on the material's safety concern and environmental impact.

Abstract
To enhance the preservation of strawberries, a novel coating formulation was developed using chitosan (CH) and iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs) supplemented with ginger and garlic extracts and combined with varying concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3% Fe3O4 NPs. The results of XRD revealed an average crystalline size of 48.1 nm for Fe3O4 NPs. SEM images identified Fe3O4 NPs as bright spots on the surface of the fruit, while FTIR confirmed their presence by detecting specific functional groups. Additional SEM analysis revealed clear visibility of CH coatings on the strawberries. Both uncoated and coated strawberry samples were stored at room temperature (27 °C), and quality parameters were systematically assessed, including weight loss, firmness, pH, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSSs), ascorbic acid content, antioxidant activity, total reducing sugars (TRSs), total phenolic compounds (TPCs), and infection rates. The obtained weight loss was 21.6% and 6% for 1.5% CH and 3% IO with 1.5% CH, whereas the obtained infection percentage was 19.65% and 13.68% for 1.5% CH and 3% IO with 1.5% CH. As strawberries are citric fruit, 3% IO with 1.5% CH contains 55.81 mg/100 g ascorbic acid. The antioxidant activity for 1.5% CH coated was around 73.89%, whereas 3% IO with 1.5% CH showed 82.89%. The studies revealed that coated samples showed better results, whereas CH that incorporates Fe3O4 NP coatings appears very promising for extending the shelf life of strawberries, preserving their quality and nutritional value during storage and transportation.

Results demonstrated CIT/HPβCD-IC was successfully prepared and observed by SEM due to the bathochromic shift of maximum absorption peak of CIT, and the formation of new bonds was confirmed by FTIR analysis, suggesting the embedding of CIT into HPβCD cavity. The changes of functional groups stretching vibrations suggested successful loading of CIT/HPβCD-IC into the GG/CS edible films. Furthermore, the incorporation of CIT/HPβCD-IC enhanced the microstructural, mechanical and barrier properties, and improved the antibacterial activities, biodegradability and thermal stability of the GG/CS edible films. Particularly, the GG/CS edible films incorporated with 1 % CIT/HPβCD-IC (GG/CS-IC 1 %) enhanced the storage stability of Harbin red sausage at 4 °C by decreasing the weight loss rate, maintaining the pH, color, and textural stabilities, retarding the microbial growth and lipid oxidation of the sausage samples. Findings here suggested that GG/CS-IC 1 % edible films showed great potential as novel multi-functional edible packaging materials for Harbin red sausage preservation.

Abstract
World hunger is getting worse, while one-third of food produced around the globe is wasted and never consumed. It is vital to reduce food waste to promote the sustainability of food systems, and improved food packaging solutions can augment this effort. The utilization of biomaterials in smart food packaging not only enhances food preservation and safety but also aligns with current demands for eco-friendly technologies to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in the field of food packaging based on the innovative use of biomaterials. It emphasizes the potential use of biomaterials derived from nature including cellulose, chitosan, keratin, etc. for this purpose. Various smart food packaging technologies such as active and intelligent packaging are discussed in detail including scavenging additives, colour-changing environment indicators, sensors, RFID tags, etc. The article also delves into the utilization of edible films and coatings, nanoparticle fillers and 2D materials in food packaging systems. Furthermore, it outlines the challenges and opportunities in this dynamic domain, emphasizing the ongoing need for research and innovation to shape the future of sustainable and smart food packaging solutions to enhance and monitor the shelf-life of food products.

Abstract
A new pH-sensitive intelligent packaging system was developed composed of extracted and purified basil seed gum (BG) containing aqueous malva sylvestris extract (MS) and varying amounts of synthesized graphene oxide (GO). In the following, the characteristics of prepared films including spectroscopic, physio-mechanical, thermogravimetry, fracture-surface morphology, anthocyanin release, and pH and TVB-N sensitivity, were investigated. Our results revealed that the addition of 0.5 wt % MS into the BG matrix induced pH sensitivity to the film and resulted in a visible color change from pH 2.0 to 14.0; however, it reduced the thermal and physio-mechanical properties. In this regard, the effective presence of the optimum concentration of GO (0.25 wt%) in enhancing the mechanical and thermal properties of the BG-MS films was shown. Moreover, inspecting the release kinetics demonstrated a controllable release for BG-MS-GO film compared to the BG-MS film in 48 h. Furthermore, the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content and pH value were shown to be highly correlated with the color changes of the freshness indicator film during the storage of salmon fillets at 25 °C for 36 h. Therefore, it was shown that BG-MS-GO film can be used as a highly effective freshness/spoilage indicator of proteinic products.

Abstract
The serendipitous occurrence of gels in science has been a milestone for further industrial revolutionization. The controlled formation and disassembly of gels coupled with their viscoelastic properties and their ability to undergo extensive structural modification to suit different applications have led to the widespread use of gelation technology in different domains of science such as sensing, material chemistry and physics, medicine, food and nutrition, ecology, and more. With the rising interest in gelators and gels applications, accurately depicting the current status of gelation and associated technology is of paramount importance for researchers and scholars already immersed in gel technology as well as those aiming to delve into this field. Utilizing bibliometrics offers a systematic approach to analyze trends, citation patterns, and the impact of research, providing crucial insights for advancing knowledge and innovation in gel technology. By performing a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of scientific publications, using Vosviewer, Citespace, and Biblioshiny, in terms of co-authorship and co-citations of publications, and also the co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, and keywords Research frontiers and hotspots in gelation and associated technologies in 21st century can be assessed. The result indicated a research frontier in the discipline of ecology, earth, and marine for gelator application and current hotspots within the research field of gelation technology in; catalysis, eutectogels development as an alternative for ionic liquid gels, gelators in drug delivery for antibacterial activity, oleogels in the food industry, low molecular weight hydrogels for tissue repair and 4D printing and gelators application for oil spill remediation and dye removal. This work, although not assessing fully the qualitative aspect of a research field, gives a broad quantitative analysis and direction of research within a research field. The result of this work will provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of research in the field of gelation technology and a global understanding of research frontiers, hotspots, and drawbacks within the field to researchers and scholars willing to work in this research area.

Despite the extensive research, the synthesis and functionalization of CTS to achieve desired properties for targeted applications remain a challenge. This review addresses current problems such as the scalability of production, consistency in quality, and the environmental impact of extraction and modification processes. Additionally, it explores the novel applications of CTS-based materials in biomedicine, agriculture, environmental protection, and food industry, showcasing innovative solutions and future potentials. By providing a detailed analysis of the current state of CTS research and identifying gaps in knowledge, this review offers a valuable resource for researchers and industry professionals. The novelty of this work lies in its holistic approach, combining historical context with a forward-looking perspective on emerging trends and potential breakthroughs in the field of CTS-based functional materials. Abstract
The application of novel insect proteins as future food resources in the food field has attracted more and more attention. In this study, a biodegradable antibacterial food packaging material with beneficial mechanical properties was developed using Tenebrio molitor larvae protein (TMP), chitosan (CS) and propolis ethanol extract (PEE) as raw materials. PEE was uniformly dispersed in the film matrix and the composite films showed excellent homogeneity and compatibility. There are strong intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions between CS, TMP, and PEE in the films, which exhibit the structure characteristics of amorphous materials. Compared with CS/TMP film, the addition of 3 % PEE significantly enhanced the elongation at break (34.23 %), water vapor barrier property (22.94 %), thermal stability (45.84 %), surface hydrophobicity (20.25 %), and biodegradability of the composite film. The composite film has strong antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, which were enhanced with the increase of PEE content. These biodegradable films offer an eco-friendly end-of-life option when buried in soil. Composite films can effectively delay the spoilage of strawberries and extend the shelf life of strawberries. Biodegradable active packaging film developed with insect protein and chitosan can be used as a substitute for petroleum-based packaging materials, and has broad application prospects in the field of fruits preservation.

Abstract
Owing to a lack of specific biological functions, bacterial cellulose (BC) has been restricted in its application to the field of active packaging. In this study, we developed antimicrobial packaging materials using foaming BC (FBC) with chitosan (CS) and applied it to the preservation of chilled sea bass. The material property analysis demonstrated that 1.5 % CS/FBC maintained a high water content of 91 %, a swelling ratio of 75.6 %, great stress of 1.61 MPa, and great strain of 1.87 %. CS incorporation into FBC also decreased its crystallinity from 73.39 % to 69.3 %. Meanwhile, 1.5 % CS/FBC also provided great antimicrobial ability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by approximately 2 log colony-forming units/mL inhibition utilizing contact-killing. Results of the preservation assessment indicated that 1.5 % CS/FBC efficiently inhibited Shewanella putrefaciens growth, reduced total volatile basic nitrogen release, and slightly inhibited lipid oxidation. Based on the above results, CS/FBC is an ecofriendly biomaterial produced from a microorganism that possesses high absorbency and strong antibacterial properties, making it suitable for development as antibacterial active packaging.

Abstract
In this work, blend films were prepared by blending 2% chitosan (CS) and 0.5% konjac glucomannan (KGM) solutions. Five ratios of the blend mixture were implemented (95:5, 80:20, 50:50, 20:80, and 5:95), and a pure CS film and a pure KGM film were also obtained. All the polymeric films were evaluated using FTIR spectroscopy, mechanical testing, SEM and AFM imaging, thermogravimetric analyses, swelling and degradation analyses, and contact angle measurements. The CS/KGM blends were assessed for their miscibility. Additionally, the blend films' properties were evaluated after six months of storage. The proposed blends had good miscibility in a full range of composition proportions. The blend samples, compared to the pure CS film, indicated better structural integrity. The surface structure of the blend films was rather uniform and smooth. The sample CS/KGM 20:80 had the highest roughness value (Rq = 12.60 nm). The KGM addition increased the thermal stability of films. The blend sample CS/KGM 5:95 exhibited the greatest swelling ability, reaching a swelling degree of 946% in the first fifteen minutes of the analysis. Furthermore, the addition of KGM to CS improved the wettability of the film samples. As a result of their good mechanical properties, surface characteristics, and miscibility, the proposed CS/KGM blends are promising materials for topical biomedical and cosmetic applications.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential application of chitosan/PVA food packaging films incorporating nano-ZnO and purple potato anthocyanins for preserving chilled hairtail pieces. The hairtail pieces were packaged with chitosan/PVA (CP) and chitosan/PVA/nano-ZnO/purple potato anthocyanins (CPZP), respectively, and Control named without any packaging. The changes in pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), total bacterial colony (TVC), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), color value, and sensory evaluation scores of hairtail pieces were periodically determined. Notably, pH, TVC, TVB-N and TBA values of CPZP group on day 15 were 11.67 %, 23.71 %, 80.73 %, and 35.07 %, respectively, lower than Control group. In addition, CPZP group also performed the best in color and sensory evaluation. These results indicated that CPZP, an active food packaging, could extend the shelf-life of hairtail at least 6 days. Overall, chitosan/PVA food films incorporated with nano-ZnO and purple potato anthocyanins (180 mg/100 mL) provides a potential application in food preservation.

Abstract
Strawberry fruits are popular all over the world due to their rich organoleptic properties and enormous health benefits. However, it is highly susceptible to postharvest spoilage due to various factors, including moisture loss, nutrient oxidation, and microbial spoilage. Recently, various researchers have studied the effect of chitosan-based flexible films and surface coatings on the shelf life of strawberries. Despite various reviews providing general information on the effects of chitosan-based films and coatings on various food products, no review has focused solely on their effects on postharvest preservation and the shelf life of strawberries. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current research on chitosan-based formulations for extending the shelf life of strawberries. Chitosan, a cationic carbohydrate polymer, possesses excellent properties such as film formation, mechanical strength, non-toxicity, biodegradability, edibility, UV-blocking ability, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial functionality, justifying its potential as packaging/coating material for fresh agricultural products, including strawberries. This review covers the various factors responsible for strawberry spoilage and the properties of chitosan that help counteract these factors. Additionally, the advantages of chitosan-based preservation technology compared to existing strawberry preservation methods were explained, efficiency was evaluated, and future research directions were suggested.

Abstract
Developing bio-based and biodegradable materials has become important to meet current market demands, government regulations, and environmental concerns. The packaging industry, particularly for food and beverages, is known to be the world's largest consumer of plastics. Therefore, the demand for sustainable alternatives in this area is needed to meet the industry's requirements. This review presents the most commonly used bio-based and biodegradable packaging materials, bio-polyesters, and polysaccharide-based polymers. At the same time, a major problem in food packaging is presented: fungal growth and, consequently, food spoilage. Different types of antifungal compounds, both natural and synthetic, are explained in terms of structure and mechanism of action. The main uses of these antifungal compounds and their degree of effectiveness are detailed. State-of-the-art studies have shown a clear trend of increasing studies on incorporating antifungals in biodegradable materials since 2000. The bibliometric networks showed studies on active packaging, biodegradable polymers, films, antimicrobial and antifungal activities, essential oils, starch and polysaccharides, nanocomposites, and nanoparticles. The combination of the development of bio-based and biodegradable materials with the ability to control fungal growth promotes both sustainability and the innovative enhancement of the packaging sector.

Abstract
This article explores the advancements in biodegradable food packaging materials derived from wheat. Wheat, a predominant global cereal crop, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional single-use plastics through its starch, gluten, and fiber components. This study highlights the fabrication processes of wheat-based materials, including solvent casting and extrusion, and their applications in enhancing the shelf life and quality of packaged foods. Recent innovations demonstrate effectiveness in maintaining food quality, controlling moisture content, and providing microbiological protection. Despite the promising potential, challenges such as moisture content and interfacial adhesion in composites remain. This review concludes with an emphasis on the environmental benefits and future trends in wheat-based packaging materials.

Abstract
The xylanase and glucose oxidase (GOD) are easily inactivated, restricting their applicaiton in food and agriculture fields. In this work, xylanase and glucose oxidase (GOD) were encapsulated into cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) stabilized three-layer microcapsules via ionic gelation technique to improve their bioavailability and targeted delivery. Encapsulation efficiency (EE), physicochemical properties, and in vitro releasing of xylanase and GOD encapsulated in microcapsules were investigated. EE of xylanase and GOD reached the highest values (73.34 % and 67.16 %, respectively) at an enzyme concentration of 35 mg/mL. In vitro experiments revealed that cumulative release of both enzymes encapsulated in microcapsules was greater than that of controls in simulated gastric tract (SGT) and simulated intestinal tract (SIT). The release of xylanase increased from 41.62 % (gastric tract) to 77.13 % (intestine tract), and release of GOD increased from 42.63 % to 72.11 %, respectively. Novel hydrogel carriers as enzymes encapsulation system could effectively improve the survival rate of enzymes in harsh environments and could be widely employed in food, feed and other industries.

Abstract
Foodborne harmful bacteria not only cause waste of fresh food, but also pose a major threat to human health. Among many new sterilization and preservation technologies, photodynamic inactivation (PDI) has the advantages of low-cost, broad-spectrum, energy-saving, nontoxic, and high efficiency. In particular, PDI based on edible photosensitizers (PSs) has a broader application prospect due to edible, accessible, and renewable features, it also can maximize the retention of the nutritional characteristics and sensory quality of the food. Therefore, it is meaningful and necessary to review edible PSs and edible PSs-mediated PDI, which can help to arouse interest and concern and promote the further development of edible PSs-mediated PDI in the future field of nonthermally sterilized food preservation. Herein, the classification and modification of edible PSs, PS-mediated in vivo and PS-mediated in vitro mechanism of PDI, strengthening strategy to improve PDI efficiency by the structure change synergistic and multitechnical means, as well as the application in fresh food preservation were reviewed systematically. Finally, the deficiency and possible future perspectives of edible PSs-mediated PDI were articulated. This review aimed to provide new perspective for the future food preservation and microbial control.

Abstract
Chitosan is a natural and renewable polysaccharide that can form biopolymers. It is derived from the deacetylation of chitin mainly from crustaceans' shells, but also from fungi and insects. Thanks to unique characteristics such as antimicrobial effects, antioxidant properties or film forming capacities, it has triggered an important amount of research in the last decade about possible applications in industrial fields. The main application field of chitosan is the food industry where it can be used for preservation purposes and shelf-life improvement for fresh food products such as fruits or meat. For beverages, it is used for clarification and fining as well as elimination of spoilage flora in beverages like fruit juices or wine. And in agriculture, it can be used as a plant protection product through different mechanisms like the elicitation of plant defences. The mechanisms of action of chitosan on microorganisms are multiple and complex but revolve mostly around the disturbance of microorganisms' membranes and cell walls resulting in the leakage of cell material. The use of chitosan is still minor but is promising in finding environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic chemicals and plastics. Therefore, its characterization is primordial for the future of sustainable production and preservation processes.

Abstract
Increased mass manufacturing and the pervasive use of plastics in many facets of daily life have had detrimental effects on the environment. As a result, these worries heighten the possibility of climate change due to the carbon dioxide emissions from burning conventional, non-biodegradable polymers. Accordingly, biodegradable gelatin and chitosan polymers are being created as a sustainable substitute for non-biodegradable polymeric materials in various applications. Chitosan is the only naturally occurring cationic alkaline polysaccharide, a well-known edible polymer derived from chitin. The biological activities of chitosan, such as its antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial qualities, have recently piqued the interest of researchers. Similarly, gelatin is a naturally occurring polymer derived from the hydrolytic breakdown of collagen protein and offers various medicinal advantages owing to its unique amino acid composition. In this review, we present an overview of recent studies focusing on applying chitosan and gelatin polymers in various fields. These include using gelatin and chitosan as food packaging, antioxidants and antimicrobial properties, properties encapsulating biologically active substances, tissue engineering, microencapsulation technology, water treatment, and drug delivery. This review emphasizes the significance of investigating sustainable options for non-biodegradable plastics. It showcases the diverse uses of gelatin and chitosan polymers in tackling environmental issues and driving progress across different industries.

Abstract
The current food packaging films can be preservative but lack the function of combining antibacterial and sterilization which lead to films can not maximize prolong shelf life of perishable foods. This study provided a new strategy to realize prolonging shelf life of perishable foods by integrating antibacterial and sterilization which focused on applying photodynamic inactivation to films with continuous activity, where curcumin (CUR) and sodium copper chlorophyll (SCC) were loaded into chitosan (CS) films. Compared to pure CS films, the barrier capacity (oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability) and mechanical properties of composite films were improved by introducing CUR and SCC. In addition, the composite film can effectively against food-borne pathogenic bacteria and significantly prolong the shelf life of cherries and pork. The provided strategy has potential application prospects in food preservation packaging.

This review provides an overview of the advancements in CEOs over the past decade, focusing on the effects of essential oils (EOs) on CEOs in terms of antimicrobial activity, antioxidant effect, gas barrier, light barrier, and mechanical properties. It also offers insights into the controlled release of EOs in CEOs and summarizes the application of CEOs in fresh food preservation.

Abstract
Incorporating polysaccharide-based composite films with nanobiotechnology offers a new strategy for food preservation. This study initially focuses on the preparation of tea polyphenol nanoparticles (TPNP), novel and derived from natural antibacterial agents, which serve to improve stability. Afterwards chitosan-based composite films loaded with TPNP (CTN film) were developed using solution casting method. The incorporation of TPNP significantly improved the UV/water/oxygen barrier properties, mechanical properties and thermal stability, alongside notable physical properties including water contact angle (93.65 ± 0.04°), low water vapor permeability (33.72 ± 3.32 g/m2h) and oxygen permeability (0.11 ± 0.02 g/m2h), tensile strength (61.83 ± 0.70 %), and elongation at break (31.60 ± 6.12 %). The CTN film not only exhibited exceptional biodegradability and nontoxicity, but also demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Additionally, it showcased potent antioxidant activity, boasting DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging rates up to 89.25 ± 0.18 % and 93.84 ± 0.42 %. The CTN film was successfully formed on the surface of strawberries through dip-coating process and their shelf life was extended from 4 to 6 days at 20 °C without side-effect on the weight loss, harness, pH and total soluble solids, illustrating its potential for enhancing food preservation.

Abstract
With an increasing emphasis on food safety and public health, there is an ongoing effort to develop reliable, non-invasive methods to assess the freshness of diverse food products. Chitosan-based food freshness indicators, leveraging properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and high stability, offer an innovative approach for real-time monitoring of food quality during storage and transportation. This review introduces intelligent food freshness indicators, specifically those utilizing pH-sensitive dyes like anthocyanins, curcumin, alizarin, shikonin, and betacyanin. It highlights the benefits of chitosan-based intelligent food freshness indicators, emphasizing improvements in barrier and mechanical properties, antibacterial activity, and composite film solubility. The application of these indicators in the food industry is then explored, alongside a concise overview of chitosan's limitations. The paper concludes by discussing the challenges and potential areas for future research in the development of intelligent food freshness indicators using chitosan. Thus, chitosan-based smart food preservation indicators represent an innovative approach to providing real-time data for monitoring food quality, offering valuable insights to both customers and retailers, and playing a pivotal role in advancing the food industry.

Abstract
Transparent films with excellent antibacterial properties and strong mechanical properties are highly sought after in packaging applications. In this study, Ag/SiO2 nanoparticles were introduced into a mixed solution of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a Ag/SiO2-CS-PVA transparent film was developed. The excellent properties of the film were confirmed by light transmittance, water contact angle tests and tensile tests. In addition, for the antibacterial test, the antibacterial properties of the sample against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) were explored, and the average size of the bacteriostatic circle was measured by the cross method. The final results show that Ag/SiO2-CS-PVA transparent film has the advantages of good antibacterial properties, high transparency and high mechanical strength.

Abstract
The development of antimicrobial food packaging is a very important and current goal, but it still difficult to implement in practice. Reducing microbial contamination and preserving food quality are very important tasks for food manufacturers as the use of antimicrobial packaging can preserve the health of consumers. On the other hand, the difficulty of degrading packaging materials, leading to environmental pollution, is also an important problem. These problems can be solved by using biodegradable biopolymers and antimicrobial agents in the production of food packaging. Very suitable antimicrobial agents are grape seed and skin extracts as they have high antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity and are obtained from grape pomace, a waste product of winemaking. The present review presents the valuable bioactive compounds contained in grape seeds and skins, the methods used to obtain the extracts, and their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Then, the application of grape seed and skin extracts for the production of antimicrobial packaging is reviewed. Emphasis is placed on antimicrobial packaging based on various biopolymers. Special attention is also paid to the application of the extract of grape skins to obtain intelligent indicator packages for the continuous monitoring of the freshness and quality of foods. The focus is mainly placed on the antimicrobial properties of the packaging against different types of microorganisms and their applications for food packaging. The presented data prove the good potential of grape seed and skin extracts to be used as active agents in the preparation of antimicrobial food packaging.

Abstract
Collagen (COL)-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) blended films with apple polyphenol (AP) as cross-linking agent and antioxidant compound were developed to produce biodegradable active packaging film. The effects of AP content on the rheological behavior of the blended solution, the structure, physicochemical and functional properties of the blended film were systematically investigated. The incorporation of AP increased the viscosity and reduced the fluidity of COL-HPMC solution. The results of rheological tests and FTIR analysis manifested the formation of hydrogen bonding interactions between collagen, HPMC and AP, which made the structures of COL-HP-AP films more compact. The mechanical strength, UV-blocking ability, water-resistance performance and thermostability were gradually enhanced as increasing AP content. DPPH free radical scavenging experiment showed that a small amount of AP could efficiently improve the antioxidant activity of COL-HP film, and with increasing AP content to 5 wt%, the scavenging rate was as high as 94.23 %. Active film containing 5 wt% AP showed obvious antibacterial effect on E. coli and S. aureus, and it could effectively prevent the oxidation of vitamin C and reduce the accumulation of MDA on green pepper during the storage. COL-HP-AP films have great potential in food packaging field for extending the shelf life of food.

Abstract
The main conservation problem of p-PVC artworks is phthalate-based plasticizer migration. Phthalate migration from the bulk to the surface of the materials leads to the formation of a glossy and oily film on the outer layers, ultimately reducing the flexibility of the material. This study aimed to develop a removable coating for the preservation of contemporary artworks and design objects made of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (p-PVC). Several coatings incorporating chitosan, collagen, and cellulose ethers were assessed as potential barriers to inhibiting plasticizer migration. Analytical techniques including optical microscopy (OM), ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (UV/Vis/NIR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to evaluate the optical and chemical stability of selected coating formulations applied to laboratory p-PVC sheet specimens. Subsequently, formulations were tested on a real tangible example of a design object, ©Barbie doll, characterized by the prevalent issue of plasticizer migration. Furthermore, the results obtained with the tested formulations were evaluated by a group of conservators using a tailored survey. Finally, a suitable coating formulation capable of safeguarding plastic substrates was suggested.

Abstract
In this work, the MeJA-loaded gelatin/pullulan/chitosan composite biofilm was prepared to inhibit the chilling lignification of the loquat fruit during storage at 0 °C. The firmness and lignin content were decreased by 89 % and 81.77 % after MeJA-loaded biofilm treatment. Malondialdehyde (MDA) production was almost completely suppressed and chilling injury of loquat fruit was significantly reduced. Enzyme activity results show that the biofilm alleviated chilling lignification mainly by inhibiting peroxidase (POD) activity in the phenylpropanoid pathway (PCCs = 0.715, with lignin content). Also, the conventional MeJA vapor treatment only alleviated lignification on day 3, but the biofilm treatment had a better and more sustained effect throughout the whole storage due to its sustained release ability. Besides, the biofilm had good mechanical properties, transparency and water vapor transmission rate. This work indicates that loading preservatives into biofilms has a promising application prospect for inhibiting the postharvest quality deterioration of fruit and vegetables.

Abstract
A series of intelligent films with pH-responsive properties were prepared using Padus virginiana peel extract (PVE) as a smart response factor, κ-carrageenan (κC) as a matrix, and complexed with rice straw lignin (SL). Following the addition of 5 mL PVE at a concentration of 430.99 mg/L, tensile strength and elongation at break of the films increased to a maximum value of 21.25 ± 0.75 MPa and 24.04 ± 0.69 %, respectively. The water vapour permeability of the films decreased with increasing PVE addition, and the minimum value was 5.85 ± 0.09 × 10-11 g m-1 s-1 Pa-1. All the films had favourable thermal stability, transparency, haze and antioxidant properties. PVE-containing films all exhibited excellent pH and ammonia response properties. The higher the humidity of the environment, the faster the ammonia response, and the films were capable of rapid discoloration at 75 % relative humidity. κC/SL-PVE5 can be used to monitor the freshness of chicken breast meat. When the total volatile basic nitrogen of chicken breast meat was increased to 14.27 mg/100 g, κC/SL-PVE5 changed from pink to greyish-yellow. In conclusion, κC/SL-PVE intelligent films hold great promise for real-time monitoring of meat freshness.

Abstract
To reduce pollution caused by traditional plastic packaging and preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this work aims to develop biological macromolecular packaging films with green synthesized AgNPs. In this study, a novel P. cocos polysaccharide (PCP) with a unique monosaccharide composition was extracted from Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf. Then, this polysaccharide containing 24.68 % rhamnose was used as a stabilizer for the green synthesis of PCP-AgNPs for the first time. PCP-AgNPs exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and S. aureus, with the highest antibacterial activity against E. coli (inhibition zone diameter = 11.14 ± 0.79 mm). Subsequently, PCP-AgNPs/chitosan (CS) film was successfully prepared by incorporating PCP-AgNPs into the CS film solution. Several experiments demonstrated that the addition of this nanomaterial promoted the formation of noncovalent interactions between CS and PCP-AgNPs, resulting in a more regular and denser film. Compared to the CS film and control group, the PCP-AgNPs/CS film significantly maintained the quality indexes of strawberries. Therefore, this composite film successfully extended the shelf life of strawberries. Regarding safety, these packaging films were not cytotoxic toward RAW264.7 cells. In conclusion, the environmentally friendly PCP-AgNPs/CS film has the potential to replace some traditional food packaging materials.

Abstract
The use of biopolymers as matrices and anthocyanins as pH-sensing indicators has generated increasing interest in freshness detection. Nevertheless, the weak mechanical properties and color stability of biopolymer-based smart packaging systems restrict their practicality. In this study, a nanocellulose hydrogel colorimetric film with enhanced stretchability, antifatigue properties, and color stability was prepared using soy hull nanocellulose (SHNC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and anthocyanin (Anth) as raw materials. This hydrogel colorimetric film was used to detect beef freshness. The structure and properties (e.g., mechanical, thermal stability and hydrophobicity) of these hydrogel colorimetric films were characterized using different techniques. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of hydrogen and ester bonds in the hydrogel colorimetric films, whereas scanning electron microscopy revealed the fish scale-like and honeycomb network structure of the hydrogel colorimetric films. Mechanical testing demonstrated that the SHNC/PVA/SA/Anth-2 hydrogel colorimetric film exhibited excellent tensile properties (elongation = 261 %), viscoelasticity (storage modulus of 11.25 kPa), and mechanical strength (tensile strength = 154 kPa), and the hydrogel colorimetric film exhibited excellent mechanical properties after repeated tensile tests. Moreover, the hydrogel colorimetric film had high transparency, excellent anti-UV linearity, thermal stability and hydrophobicity, and had displayed visually discernible color response to pH buffer solution and volatile NH3 by naked eyes, which was highly correlated with the TVB-N and pH values. Notably, the release of anthocyanin in distilled water decreased from 81.23 % to 19.87 %. The designed SHNC/PVA/SA/Anth hydrogel colorimetric films exhibited potential application as smart packaging film or gas-sensing labels in monitoring the freshness of meat products.

Abstract
The growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly food packaging has prompted research on innovative solutions to environmental and consumer health issues. To enhance the properties of smart packaging, the incorporation of bioactive compounds derived from various natural sources has attracted considerable interest because of their functional properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. However, extracting these compounds from natural sources poses challenges because of their complex chemical structures and low concentrations. Traditional extraction methods are often environmentally harmful, expensive and time-consuming. Thus, green extraction techniques have emerged as promising alternatives, offering sustainable and eco-friendly approaches that minimise the use of hazardous solvents and reduce environmental impact. This review explores cutting-edge research on the green extraction of bioactive compounds and their incorporation into smart packaging systems in the last 10 years. Then, an overview of bioactive compounds, green extraction techniques, integrated techniques, green extraction solvents and their application in smart packaging was provided, and the impact of bioactive compounds incorporated in smart packaging on the shelf lives of food products was explored. Furthermore, it highlights the challenges and opportunities within this field and presents recommendations for future research, aiming to contribute to the advancement of sustainable and efficient smart packaging solutions.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS)-based bio-nanocomposite food packaging films were prepared via solvent-casting method by incorporating a unique combination of additives and fillers, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), glycerol, Tween 80, castor oil (CO), and nano titanium dioxide (TiO2) in various proportions to enhance film properties. For a comprehensive analysis of the synthesized films, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile testing, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-vis spectrophotometry were employed. Furthermore, the antimicrobial efficacy of the films against S. aureus, E. coli, and A. niger was examined to assess their potential to preserve food from foodborne pathogens. The results claimed that the inclusion of castor oil and TiO2 nanoparticles considerably improved antimicrobial properties, UV-vis light barrier properties, thermal stability, optical transparency, and mechanical strength of the films, while reducing their water solubility, moisture content, water vapor and oxygen permeability. Based on the overall analysis, CS/PVA/CO/TiO2-0.3 film can be selected as the optimal one for practical applications. Furthermore, the practical application of the optimum film was evaluated using white bread as a model food product. The modified film successfully extended the shelf life of bread to 10 days, surpassing the performance of commercial LDPE packaging (6 days), and showed promising attributes for applications in the food packaging sector. These films exhibit superior antimicrobial properties, improved mechanical strength, and extended shelf life for food products, marking a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional plastic packaging in both scientific research and industrial applications.

Abstract
Food packaging is an essential part of food transportation, storage and preservation. Biodegradable biopolymers are a significant direction for the future development of food packaging materials. As a natural biological polysaccharide, chitosan has been widely concerned by researchers in the field of food packaging due to its excellent film-forming property, good antibacterial property and designability. Thus, the application research of chitosan-based food packaging films, coatings and aerogels has been greatly developed. In this review, recent advances on chitosan-based food packaging materials are summarized. Firstly, the development background of chitosan-based packaging materials was described, and then chitosan itself was introduced. In addition, the design, preparation and applications of films, coatings and aerogels in chitosan-based packaging for food preservation were discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each research in the development of chitosan-based packaging materials were analyzed. Finally, the application prospects, challenges and suggestions for solving the problems of chitosan-based packaging are summarized and prospected.

Abstract
In this study, we successfully developed a screen-printed pH-responsive intelligent label using low molecular weight chitosan grafted with phenol red (LCPR) as a colorant for screen printing ink. The LCPR was synthesized via a Mannich reaction, and its successful grafting was confirmed through FT-IR, UV-vis, and NMR spectroscopy. The LCPR exhibited lower crystallinity and thermal stability compared to low molecular weight chitosan (LC) and demonstrated zwitterionic behavior. To create intelligent labels, the LCPR-based ink was efficiently printed on cotton substrates with high resolution. The label exhibited remarkable sensitivity to buffer pH solutions and ammonia gas, leading to distinctive color changes from orange to red to purple. Additionally, the label showed excellent reversibility, storage stability, and leaching resistance to different food simulant solutions. The label was utilized to monitor shrimp freshness, successfully detecting a noticeable color shift upon spoilage. These findings highlight the significant potential of the LCPR-based label as an intelligent food packaging solution, offering pH-responsiveness and color stability for qualitative freshness detection of protein-rich food.

Abstract
This work explores the development and characterization of composite multilayer films comprising bacterial cellulose (BC) and chitosan enriched with antioxidant compounds from grape bagasse extract (GE) and glycerol. SEM images revealed a compact structure with successful interactions between BC and chitosan, confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Equilibrium moisture content, water vapor permeability (WVP), swollen capacity, and solubility were systematically investigated, unveiling the influence of glycerol and GE concentrations. Moisture content increased with elevated glycerol and GE levels, attributed to their hydrophilic nature. WVP rose with higher concentrations of hydrophilic compounds, affecting the films' permeability. Swollen capacity decreased, and solubility increased with the addition of GE and glycerol, indicating a more compact film structure. The incorporation of GE conferred antioxidant properties to the films, as evidenced by DPPH and ABTS+ assays, and Total Phenolic Content (TPC) determination. TPC values varied from 0 to 1.75 mg GAE/g dried film, depending on GE. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) highlighted polymeric associations, and UV-Vis spectra demonstrated enhanced UV-blocking properties. Overall, these multilayer films offer promising applications in food packaging, leveraging natural antioxidant sources for an enhanced functionality.
