Abstract
Fishmeal is over-represented in the diets of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), and this farming mode, which relies heavily on fishmeal, is highly susceptible to the price of fishmeal and is unsustainable. Therefore, more and more studies on the large yellow croaker tend to replace fishmeal with land-based animal or plant proteins, but few studies have considered it from the genomic selection. In this study, we evaluated the survival rate (SR), final body weight (FBW), body weight gain (BWG), weight gain rate (WGR), and specific growth rate (SGR) of the large yellow croaker GS7 strain, which was obtained through genomic selection for tolerance to plant proteins and analyzed the differences in plant protein utilization between the GS7 strain and unselected commercial large yellow croaker (control group). The results of separate feeding for 60 days showed that although there was no significant difference in SR between the control and GS7 strains (P > 0.05), the BWG, WGR, and SGR of the control were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of the GS7 group. Results of mixed feeding after PIT marking showed that compared to the control fish, the GS7 strain had significantly higher BWG, WGR, and SGR (P < 0.0001). To make the experimental results more precise, we compared fishes with equivalent initial body weight (IBW) in the GS7 strain and the control group. The final fish body weight (FBW) of Ctrl-2 (IBW 300-399 g) and Ctrl-4 (IBW 500-599 g) was significantly lower than those of the corresponding GS7-2 and GS7-4 (P < 0.05), while the FBW of Ctrl-1 (IBW 200-299 g) and Ctrl-3 (IBW 400-499 g) was much significantly lower than the corresponding GS7-1 and GS7-3 (P < 0.01). The BWG, WGR, and SGR of Ctrl-1 and Ctrl-4 were more significantly lower than those of the corresponding GS7-1 and GS7-4 (P < 0.01), while the BWG, WGR, and SGR of Ctrl-2 and Ctrl-3 were more significantly different from the corresponding GS7-2 and GS7-3 (P < 0.0001). Our results seem to point toward the same conclusion that the GS7 strain is better adapted to high plant protein diets than the unselected commercial large yellow croaker. These results will provide a reference for the low-fishmeal culture industry of large yellow croakers and the selection and breeding of strains tolerant to a high percentage of plant proteins in other marine fishes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The associations of plant-based dietary patterns with depression and anxiety symptoms among older adults have not been extensively studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine these associations in Chinese older adults. METHODS Data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) was employed in the present study. The simplified food frequency questionnaire was used to assess the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-10 (CES-D-10) was used to evaluate depression symptoms, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) was used to assess anxiety symptoms. This study employed logistic regression and linear regression to examine the associations between plant-based dietary patterns and symptoms of depression and anxiety. RESULTS This study included 11,971 older adults, with a mean age of 83.23 ± 11.10 years. The results indicated that PDI and hPDI were negative associated with depression symptoms (adjusted β -0.09, 95 % CI -0.11, -0.07) (adjusted β -0.09, 95 % CI -0.11, -0.07) and anxiety symptoms (adjusted β -0.03, 95 % CI -0.04, -0.02) (adjusted β -0.04, 95 % CI -0.05, -0.02), while uPDI was positive associated with depression symptoms (adjusted β 0.09, 95 % CI 0.07, 0.11) and anxiety symptoms (adjusted β 0.04, 95 % CI 0.03, 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The findings from this study have the potential to promote healthy dietary patterns in older adults, and may have implications for the prevention and management of depression and anxiety in this population.

Abstract
Aquaculture has intensified tremendously with the increasing demand for protein sources as the global population grows. However, this industry is plagued with major challenges such as poor growth performance, the lack of a proper environment, and immune system impairment, thus creating stress for the aquaculture species and risking disease outbreaks. Currently, prophylactics such as antibiotics, vaccines, prebiotics, probiotics, and phytobiotics are utilized to minimize the negative impacts of high-density farming. One of the promising prophylactic agents incorporated in fish feed is resveratrol, a commercial phytophenol derived via the methanol extraction method. Recent studies have revealed many beneficial effects of resveratrol in aquatic animals. Therefore, this review discusses and summarizes the roles of resveratrol in improving growth performance, flesh quality, immune system, antioxidant capacity, disease resistance, stress mitigation, and potential combination with other prophylactic agents for aquatic animals.

Abstract
Soybean meal, excessively used in place of fish meal (FM) in aquaculture, has a detrimental impact on fish. In this study, the nanopeptide CI20, which was created by conjugating antimicrobial peptide gcIFN-20H and CMCS, were evaluated the feeding effect in mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi). Compared with the control group, 150 mg/kg C-I20-fed fish showed the second highest growth performance with no significant changes in body composition. C-I20-fed fish showed more goblet cells and thicker mucin after feeding. The 150 mg/kg CI20 diet boosted the antioxidant capacity, immunity, and digestive enzymes. After Aeromonas hydrophila and infection spleen and kidney necrosis virus infection, the survival rates in the 150 mg/kg CI20 group were highest. Meanwhile, many tissues in the 150 mg/kg CI20 group had significantly lower pathogen loads than the other groups. Treatment with 150 mg/kg CI20 was effective in increasing antioxidant capacity and immunity. The minimum tissue lesions were observed in the 150 mg/kg CI20 group. The goblet cell number and mucin thickness were significantly increased by CI20 treatment after infection. The study results herein showed that a reasonable dietary concentration of CI20 feed promoted growth performance and disease resistances in fish, suggesting a prospective nano antimicrobial peptide for the aquaculture.

Abstract
The effects of dietary resveratrol supplementation on beef quality and antioxidant capacity under high‑oxygen packaging were studied. Twelve cattle were selected and fed a total mixed ration (Control, CON) or supplemented with resveratrol (5 g/cattle/day, RES) for 120 days. The antioxidant capacity and meat quality of beef under high‑oxygen modified atmosphere packaging (HiOx-MAP, 80%O2/20%CO2) and overwrap packaging (OW) were evaluated during storage. Compared to the CON, RES enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity in serum and muscle, and increased the expression of Nrf2 and its downstream target genes (P < 0.05), which decreased the lipid and protein oxidation of steaks during storage (P < 0.05). The RES resulted in a* values increasing throughout storage (P < 0.05) and lower MetMb% than CON steaks (P < 0.05) in HiOx-MAP. The water-holding capacity (WHC) was improved and Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) was reduced (P < 0.05) in RES steaks during storage. Thus dietary resveratrol increased beef antioxidant capacity under HiOx-MAP and improved meat quality, and can be used as a potential method to elevate beef quality and reduce the oxidation under HiOx-MAP.

Abstract
Antibacterial peptide has been widely developed in cultivation industry as feed additives. However, its functions in reducing the detrimental impacts of soybean meal (SM) remain unknown. In this study, we prepared nano antibacterial peptide CMCS-gcIFN-20H (C-I20) with excellent sustained-release and anti-enzymolysis, and fed mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) with a SM diet supplemented with different levels of C-I20 (320, 160, 80, 40, 0 mg/Kg) for 10 weeks. 160 mg/Kg C-I20 treatment significantly improved the final body weight, weight gain rate and crude protein content of mandarin fish and reduced feed conversion ratio. 160 mg/Kg C-I20-fed fish maintained appropriate goblet cells number and mucin thickness, as well as improved villus length, intestinal cross-sectional area. Based on these advantageous physiological changes, 160 mg/Kg C-I20 treatment effectively reduced multi-type tissue (liver, trunk kidney, head kidney and spleen) injury. The addition of C-I20 did not change the muscle composition and muscle amino acids composition. Interestingly, dietary 160 mg/Kg C-I20 supplementation prevented the reduction in myofiber diameter and change in muscle texture, and effectively increased polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially DHA + EPA) in muscle. In conclusion, dietary C-I20 in a reasonable concentration supplementation effectively alleviates the negative effects of SM by improving the intestinal mucosal barrier. The application of nanopeptide C-I20 is a prospectively novel strategy for promoting aquaculture development.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of dietary tributyrin (TB) and alanyl-glutamine (AGn) on the intestinal health of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) fed with high-level soybean meal (SM) diet, six isonitrogenous (41.36%) and isolipidic (10.25%) diets were formulated and fed to largemouth bass (initial body weight 25.5 ± 0.5g) for 8 weeks. The two control diets contained 34.8% peanut meal (PM) and 41.3% SM, while the other four experimental diets supplemented TB at 0.1% (TB0.1), 0.2% (TB0.2) and AGn at 1% (AGn1), 2% (AGn2) in SM, respectively. The results showed that there were no significant differences in weight gain, survival rate, and hepatosomatic index among all groups (P>0.05), while feed coefficient rate in AGn1, AGn2 and TB0.2 groups was significantly lower than that in SM group (P< 0.05). Compared with the PM group, the intestinal inflammation of largemouth bass in SM group were obvious, accompanied by the damage of intestinal structure, the decrease of digestive enzyme activity, and the up-regulation of proinflammatory cytokines. Compared with the SM group, the activities of intestinal trypsin, lipase and foregut amylase in TB and AGn groups increased significantly (P<0.05), and the gene expression levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) were down-regulated, while the gene expression levels of target of rapamycin (TOR) and eIF4E-binding protein (4E-BP) were up-regulated in all experimental groups (P<0.05). It can be concluded that supplementation of 1%-2% AGn and 0.1%-0.2% TB can alleviate enteritis caused by high-level soybean meal, and the recommend level is 2% AGn and 0.2% TB.

Abstract
Aquatic pollutants, including cadmium (Cd), cause oxidative stress on aquatic animals. The use of probiotics, including microalgae as a feed additive to alleviate the toxic impacts of heavy metals, is a much more interesting point. Hence, the current study investigated the oxidative stress and immunosuppression in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings caused by Cd toxicity as well as the preventive function of dietary Chlorella vulgaris against Cd toxicity. Accordingly, fish were fed on 0.0 (control), 5, and 15 g/kg diet of Chlorella up to satiation thrice a day, along with being exposed to 0.0 or 2.5 mg Cd/L for 60 days. Following the experimental procedure, fish from each group were intraperitoneally injected with Streptococcus agalactiae, and their survivability was observed for further ten days. Chlorella-supplemented diets meaningfully (P < 0.05) boosted the antioxidative capability of fish, which was evidenced by higher activities of hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) as well as higher levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) along with significant reductions in hepatic malondialdehyde levels. Moreover, the innate immunity indices [phagocytic activity (PA), respiratory burst activity (RBA), and alternative complement activity (ACH50)] were significantly higher in Chlorella-fed fish, particularly in the group of 15 g/kg diet. Additionally, serum of Chlorella-fed fish showed potent bactericidal activities against S. agalactiae, particularly at the treatment of a 15 g/kg diet. Feeding Chlorella diets to Nile tilapia fingerlings upregulated SOD, CAT, and GPx genes expression alongside the down-regulation of IL-1β, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, and HSP70 genes expression. Conversely, Cd toxicity caused oxidative stress and suppressed the fish's innate immunity with upregulation of the expression of IL-1β, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, and HSP70 genes. Feeding Cd-exposed fish on Chlorella-containing diets attenuated these adverse effects. The current research revealed that supplementing feeds with the treatment of 15 g/kg diet of C. vulgaris supports the antioxidant-immune responses and alleviates the Cd toxicity effects on Nile tilapia fingerlings.

Abstract
Inflammatory environments provide vital biochemical stimuli (i.e., oxidative stress, pH, and enzymes) for triggered drug delivery in a controlled manner. Inflammation alters the local pH within the affected tissues. As a result, pH-sensitive nanomaterials can be used to effectively target drugs to the site of inflammation. Herein, we designed pH-sensitive nanoparticles in which resveratrol (an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound (RES)) and urocanic acid (UA) were complexed with a pH-sensitive moiety using an emulsion method. These RES-UA NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the RES-UA NPs were assessed in RAW 264.7 macrophages. The NPs were circular in shape and ranged in size from 106 to 180 nm. The RES-UA NPs suppressed the mRNA expression of the pro-inflammatory molecules inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages in a concentration-dependent manner. Incubation of LPS-stimulated macrophages with RES-UA NPs reduced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a concentration-dependent manner. These results suggest that pH-responsive RES-UA NPs can be used to decrease ROS generation and inflammation.

Abstract
Ammonia is recognized as an environmental stressor for fish. As resveratrol (RES) has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, we hypothesized that RES could attenuate the response to ammonia exposure in gibel carp. Therefore, gibel carp were fed a diet containing RES for eight weeks, followed by acute ammonia stimulation. Stress induced by acute ammonia exposure could be ameliorated by RES, manifested by down-regulated plasma glucose, and up-regulated C3 and IgM levels. Furthermore, decreased AST and LDH; enhanced T-AOC, SOD, and GPx in the liver; and reduced damage to gill and liver tissues indicated that RES attenuated oxidative and tissue damage induced by ammonia exposure. Moreover, RES activated the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and up-regulated the expression of several antioxidant genes. RES enhanced anti-inflammatory activity as reflected by activation of the NF-κB pathway, down-regulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (nfκb, tnf-α, and il-1β), and up-regulated the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (il-4 and il-10). In terms of mitochondrial function, RES up-regulated protein levels of p-AMPK, SIRT1, and PGC-1α; inhibited mitochondrial fission; promoted mitochondrial fusion and biogenesis-related gene expression. Overall, the results suggest that RES mediated the Nrf2/HO-1, NF-κB, and AMPK/SIRT1/PGC-1α pathways to attenuate oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction induced by ammonia in gibel carp.

Abstract
Nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAp) is similar to human bone mineral in structure and biochemistry and is, therefore, widely used as bone biomaterial and a drug carrier. Further, n-HAp composite scaffolds have a great potential role in bone regeneration. Loading bioactive factors and drugs onto n-HAp composites has emerged as a promising strategy for bone defect repair in bone tissue engineering. With local delivery of bioactive agents and drugs, biological materials may be provided with the biological activity they lack to improve bone regeneration. This review summarizes classification of n-HAp composites, application of n-HAp composite scaffolds loaded with bioactive factors and drugs in bone tissue engineering and the drug loading methods of n-HAp composite scaffolds, and the research direction of n-HAp composite scaffolds in the future is prospected.

Abstract
The current study is designed to assay the efficacy of chlorogenic acid (ChA) in the diet on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, serum immunological, biochemical, and antioxidant variables, and mucosal immune response as well as disease resistance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) juveniles. Rainbow trout juveniles received diets supplemented with different inclusion levels of ChA (0 (ctrl), 200 (CA1), 400 (CA2), 600 (CA3), and 800 (CA4) mg kg-1 diet) for 60 days. According to the findings, fish from CA3 and CA4 groups demonstrated the best results considering the final weight (FW) and weight gain (WG) (P < 0.05). Also, the group that received 600 mg kg-1 ChA-supplemented diet showed the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) and the highest specific growth rate (SGR) compared to other groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, the minimum survival rate (SR) was only detected in the CA4 treatment (P < 0.05). Regression analysis exhibited that rainbow trout growth indices were polynomially linked to dietary chlorogenic acid concentrations. In this regard, the optimal levels of chlorogenic acid according to growth parameters (FCR and SGR) were 0.71 and 0.62 gr kg-1 diet, respectively. The results exhibited superior performance of protease and amylase activities in CA2, CA3, and CA4 groups with the maximum amount in the group receiving 600 mg kg-1 ChA-enriched diet (P < 0.05). Serum lysozyme (LYZ), immunoglobulin (Ig), and components 3 and 4 (C3 and C4) values of CA2, CA3, and CA4 groups were significantly higher than others with the highest amount in the CA3 group (P <0.05). Additionally, serum nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) value in the CA3 and CA4 groups and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in the CA3 group were notably more than others (P < 0.05). Moreover, the lowest aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and the highest total protein (TP) and globulin (GLO) values were observed in CA3 treatment (P < 0.05). CA2 and CA3 groups demonstrated increased serum catalase (CAT) and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) values compared to the control while the highest CAT and lowest MDA values were observed in CA3 treatment (P < 0.05). Considering mucus immunity, the significantly maximum LYZ and protease values were demonstrated in CA2 and CA3 groups, and the highest ALP, Ig, and esterase values were demonstrated in the CA3 group. In comparison with the control, the mortality rates of the groups that received the ChA diets were remarkably (P < 0.05) lower postchallenge with Y. ruckeri, and the highest survival and relative percentage of survival (RPS) (P < 0.05) belonged to the CA3 group. Results obtained from the current study suggested ChA as a functional dietary additive to raise growth parameters, immune indices, antioxidant capacity, and resistance to disease in rainbow trout.

Abstract
Introduction Resveratrol (RES) is a polyphenol organic compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to determine whether and how RES can alleviate liver injury in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced gibel carp. Methods Gibel carp were fed a diet with or without RES and were cultured for 8 weeks, followed by LPS injection. Results and discussion The results suggested that RES attenuated the resulting oxidative stress and inflammation by activating the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and inhibiting the NF-κB pathway, as confirmed by changes in oxidative stress, inflammation-related gene expression, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Furthermore, RES cleared damaged mitochondria and enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis to mitigate reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation by upregulating the SIRT1/PGC-1α and PINK1/Parkin pathways and reducing p62 expression. Overall, RES alleviated LPS-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in gibel carp through mitochondria-related mechanisms.

Abstract
As the precursor of taurine, cysteine serves physiological functions, such as anti-oxidative stress and immune improvement. Investigation of cysteine and its derivatives has made positive progress in avian and mammalian species, yet the study and application of cysteine in aquatic animals are relatively rare. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of supplementing a low-fishmeal diet with various levels of cysteine on the growth, antioxidant capacity, intestine immunity, and resistance against Streptococcus agalactiae of the juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). According to our study, exogenous supplementation with 0.6-1.2% cysteine greatly increased the final body weight (FBW) and specific growth rate (SGR) of golden pompano compared to the control group. Under the present conditions, the optimum dietary cysteine supplementation level for golden pompano was 0.91% based on the polynomial regression analysis of SGR. Meanwhile, we found that the Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 signaling pathway was notably upregulated with the increase of exogenous cysteine, which increased antioxidant enzyme activity in serum and gene expression in the intestine and reduced the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the serum of golden pompano. In addition, morphological analysis of the midgut demonstrated that exogenous cysteine improved muscle thickness and villi length, which suggested that the physical barrier of the intestine was greatly strengthened by cysteine. Moreover, cysteine increased the diversity and relative abundance of the intestinal flora of golden pompano. Cysteine suppressed intestinal NF-κB/IKK/IκB signaling and pro-inflammatory cytokine mRNA levels. Conversely, intestinal anti-inflammatory cytokine gene expression and serum immune parameters were upregulated with the supplementary volume of cysteine and improved intestine immunity. Further, exogenous cysteine supplementation greatly reduced the mortality rate of golden pompano challenged with S. agalactiae. In general, our findings provide more valuable information and new insights into the rational use of cysteine in the culture of healthy aquatic animals.

Abstract
Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene), a polyphenol found in grapes, red wine, peanuts, and apples, has been reported to exhibit a wide range of biological and pharmacological properties. In addition, resveratrol has been reported to intervene in multiple stages of carcinogenesis. It has also been known to kill several human cancer cells through programmed cell death (PCD) mechanisms such as apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis. However, resveratrol has limitations in its use as an anticancer agent because it is susceptible to photoisomerization owing to its unstable double bond, short half-life, and is rapidly metabolized and eliminated. Trans-(E)-resveratrol is nontoxic, and has several biological and pharmacological activities. However, little is known about the pharmacological properties of the photoisomerized cis-(Z)-resveratrol. Therefore, many studies on resveratrol derivatives and analogues that can overcome the shortcomings of resveratrol and increase its anticancer activity are underway. This review comprehensively summarizes the literature related to resveratrol-induced PCD, such as apoptosis, autophagy, necroptosis, and the development status of synthetic resveratrol derivatives and analogues as novel anticancer drugs.

Abstract
Yeast culture (YC), as a member of probiotics family is a natural product produced from yeast fermentation, affects of improving immunity. However, the intestine and liver injury and immunosuppression mechanism caused by SBA in fish are unclear and more functions of YC supplement in the diet need to be developed. Soybean agglutinin (SBA) is an anti-nutritional factor in soybean and leads to growth-inhibitory effect in feeding of the high proportion of soybean meal replacing fish meal (FM). Therefore, one hundred and thirty-five Pseudobagrus ussuriensis (6.5 ± 0.27 g) were randomly selected and divided into three groups (Control, SBA and YC+SBA groups). For the model, fish were fed with 2% YC for 8 weeks and then given intragastric administration of 0.2-mL SBA solution for 20 days. The results showed that SBA damaged the immune and antioxidant capacity, causing an inflammatory reaction, leading to abnormal expression of cytokines in the intestine and liver of Pseudobagrus ussuriensis. YC could effectively attenuate intestinal and liver damage and downregulate the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway and suppress oxidative stress in Pseudobagrus ussuriensis. Besides, YC had obvious immune advantage, which could improve the immune ability. In summary, these results showed that YC could reduce immunosuppression and intestinal-liver injury by inhibiting the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB signal pathway and oxidative stress induced by SBA. This study provided some explanations for the problems of fish diet caused by anti-nutritional factors from soybean meal and provided a theoretical basis for the function development of YC in aquaculture.

Abstract
Taurine has various biological functions in fish, playing an essential role in growth, resistance to oxidative stress, and intestine immunity. Here, we evaluated the effects of exogenous taurine added to low-fishmeal diets on the growth, anti-oxidative stress, intestine immunity, and Streptococcus agalactiae resistance in juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus). Our study showed that exogenous taurine supplementation of 1.2% (T3 group) greatly enhanced the weight gain rate and specific growth rate (SGR) of juvenile golden pompano, significantly upregulating growth-related factor expression in the brain and liver, as well as the levels of growth-related parameters in the serum. Polynomial regression analysis using SGR estimated the optimal dietary taurine level for golden pompano at 1.18%. Moderate exogenous taurine also increased the muscular thickness and villus length within the intestine, maintained intestinal physical barrier stability, activated the Nrf2/Keap-1/HO-1 signaling pathway, increased intestinal antioxidant enzyme gene expression and antioxidant enzyme activity in the serum, and upregulated immunoglobulin and complement levels in parallel with declining reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in the serum. Antioxidant factor expression was also upregulated in the intestine. Furthermore, supplementation suppressed NF-κB signaling and intestinal pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression, increased anti-inflammatory cytokine gene expression, and improved intestine immunity. Finally, taurine supplementation improved the survival rate of golden pompano challenged with S. agalactiae. Overall, our findings provide additional information and support for the rational use of taurine in healthy aquatic animal farming.

Abstract
Plant polyphenol supplementation may improve fish health in aquaculture systems. To assess the potential benefits and function mechanism of plant polyphenols in aquaculture, fish were fed either basal feed (CON) or the basal feed supplemented with 500 mg/kg of curcumin (CUR), oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), chlorogenic acid (CGA), or resveratrol (RES). After an 8-week feeding experiment, blood samples were used to analyze the concentrations of biochemical indices. Gut samples were collected to evaluate microbiota, short chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels, and gene expression. The results indicated that polyphenol administration reduced serum glucose and insulin. Lysozyme activity was enhanced by OPC and CGA, and superoxide dismutase activity was increased by CUR, OPC, and CGA. The gut microbial structure of the RES group was segregated from that of the CON, and the genus Bacteroides was identified as a potential biomarker in the CUR, CGA, and RES groups. Total gut SCFA increased in the CUR, CGA, and RES groups. A strong correlation was observed between Bacteroides and SCFA. In conclusion, dietary polyphenols have distinct anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-hyperglycemic activities that may be closely associated with their microbiota-modulation effects.

Abstract
In this study, we investigate the potentials of dietary curcumin and resveratrol on blood biochemistry, immune responses and resistance to the toxicity of the pesticide, abamectin. 540 common carps (30.78 ± 0.17 g) were randomly distributed into 18 tanks (30 fish per tank), as six experimental groups (T1: non-supplemented and on-exposed fish, T2: 300 mg/kg curcumin, T3: 300 mg/kg resveratrol, T4: 12.5% LC50 of abamectin, T5: 300 mg/kg curcumin +12.5% LC50 of abamectin, T6: 300 mg/kg resveratrol + 12.5% LC50 of abamectin). Use of 300 mg/kg resveratrol in the diet of non-abamectin exposed fish improved the growth performance (P < 0.05), while such effects were not observed for curcumin (P > 0.05). There were no differences in the final weight (FW), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and weight gain (WG) between control and fish of the treatments, resveratrol + abamectin and curcumin + abamectin (P < 0.05). The immune components in blood [lysozyme, complement activity, Total immunoglobulin (total Ig), protease, myeloperoxidase (MPO), nitro-blue-tetrazolium (NBT), peroxidase, albumin] and mucus [acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), esterase, antiprotease)] and antioxidant enzymes [(superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)] exhibited various change patterns compared to the control group, however, these components were almost all higher in fish supplemented with curcumin and resveratrol in an abamectin-free medium than in control and other groups (P < 0.05). In most cases, the levels of immune and antioxidant components in the control did not show significant difference with the treatments, resveratrol + abamectin and curcumin + abamectin (P > 0.05). Abamectin induced oxidative stress in fish, as the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly increased in the exposed fish compared to non-exposed groups (P < 0.05). It appears that neither curcumin nor resveratrol were as effective in preventing oxidative stress, because MDA levels were higher in exposed fish (abamectin, curcumin + abamectin, resveratrol + abamectin) than in control and non-exposed individuals (P < 0.05). Curcumin and resveratrol also showed protective effects on liver, since the levels of liver metabolic enzymes [aspartate transaminase (AST), ALP, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] were lower in the supplemented fish in a abamectin-free medium than in control (P < 0.05). Curcumin and resveratrol also mitigated the stress responses in the exposed fish, as cortisol and glucose levels showed significant decreases in the supplemented fish (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study revealed that abamectin can depress the growth and immunity in the common carp. Although, both resveratrol and curcumin were mitigated the toxic effects of abamectin, it seems that resveratrol be more effective than curcumin.

Effect of Dietary Plant Feedstuffs and Protein/Carbohydrate Ratio on Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) Gut Health and Functionality. FISHES 2022. Abstract
This study investigated, for the first time, the integrated effects of dietary protein source and protein/carbohydrate (P/CH) ratio on gilthead seabream gut histomorphology, microbiota composition, digestive enzymes activity, and immunological and oxidative stress-related gene expressions. Four isolipidic diets: two fishmeal-based (FM) and two plant feedstuff (PF)-based diets, with P/CH ratios of 50/10 or 40/20 each (FM-P50/CH10; FM-P40/CH20; PF-P50/CH10; PF-P40/CH20), were tested. PF-based diets lead to more histomorphological alterations than FM-based diets. P/CH ratio had no relevant effect on gut histomorphology. Gut mucosa of fish fed PF-based diets presented a higher number of operational taxonomic units, and richness and diversity indices, while the P/CH ratio did not affect those parameters. The α-amylase activity was lower in fish fed with PF-based diets and in fish fed the P40/CH20 diets. Regarding the immune-related genes, only cyclooxygenase-2 was affected, being higher in fish fed the P50/CH10 diets than the P40/CH20 diets. Fish fed the FM-based diets presented higher expression of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase, while fish fed the P50/CH10 diet had higher expression of superoxide dismutase. In conclusion, PF-based diets can compromise gut absorptive and digestive metabolism, but decreasing the dietary P/CH ratio had little effect on the parameters measured.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary sodium butyrate (NaBT) supplementation on the gut health of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) fed with a high soybean meal diet. Three isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated: a high fishmeal group (Control); a high soybean meal group (SBM), in which the 30% fishmeal protein in the Control diet was replaced by soy protein; and an NaBT group, in which 0.2% NaBT was added to the SBM diet. Each diet was fed to triplicate tanks (20 fish in each tank). After 8 weeks of feeding trial, the distal intestine and intestinal digesta of the fish in each treatment were sampled. The results showed that fishmeal replacement and NaBT supplementation did not affect fish growth performance. Dietary 0.2% NaBT supplementation improved intestinal morphology, increasing the villus width and villus height and reducing the width of lamina propria. The distal intestine of fish in the control and NaBT groups demonstrated lower activities of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and a lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content, compared with the fish in the SBM group. Moreover, the addition of 0.2% NaBT in the feed significantly decreased the expression of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 1β (IL-1β) compared to the SBM diet. PCoA and UPGMA analyses based on weighted UniFrac distances demonstrated that intestinal microbial communities in the NaBT group were closer to those in the control group than to those in the SBM group. In addition, dietary 0.2% NaBT supplementation significantly increased the abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes and decreased the abundance of Tenericutes at the phylum level. Furthermore, the abundance of Bacteroides, Lachnospiraceae_unclassified, and Lachnospiraceae_uncultured was significantly increased, while that of Mycoplasma was significantly decreased in fish intestine at NaBT group at the genus level. In conclusion, dietary NaBT supplementation had beneficial roles in protecting the gut health of largemouth bass from the impairments caused by soybean meal.

Abstract
Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) was cloned and characterized in the present study and the influence of SIRT1 activation induced by resveratrol inclusion on the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism and antioxidation was also investigated. The SIRT1 of largemouth bass, with full-length cDNA sequence of 3395bp encoding 695 amino acids, was mainly expressed in gonad, heart and liver. The analysis of multiple sequence alignment revealed that, in accordance with other species, SIRT1 of largemouth bass contained highly conserved substrate-binding site and NAD+ binding site. The result of subcellular localization displayed that SIRT1 of largemouth bass was mainly localized in the nucleus. The inclusion of 1.0 and 2.5‰ dietary RSV, a natural SIRT1 activator, significantly elevated the SIRT1 protein expression. Meanwhile, the phosphorylation of AKT1 and FoxO1 followed similar pattern with that of SIRT1, indicating the activation of insulin pathway, which may result in the inhibition of lipogenesis and activation of lipolysis, and reduced hepatic triglycerides content. Additionally, the activation of SIRT1 induced by dietary RSV elevated the antioxidant capacity at both transcriptional level and enzymatic level, which was probably mediated by the transcription factor Nrf2. In above, SIRT1 was suggested to be involved in improving antioxidant capacity and alleviating hepatic lipid deposition in largemouth bass.

Abstract
In this 8-week feeding trial, the effects of nucleotide (N) supplementation (at 0.05%) were compared in diets with conventional soybean meal (CSBM or CSBM + N) versus bioprocessed SBM (BSBM or BSMB + N) on largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, juveniles. A total of five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated, with the control diet being fishmeal-based. Growth, feeding efficiency, proximate composition, hepatic expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism and growth as well as liver/intestinal histopathology were assessed. Results showed that growth was significantly higher in fish fed the control diet, but there was no significant effect of SBM type or nucleotide supplementation on growth, feeding efficiency, or proximate composition. Hepatic expression of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGFI), superoxide dismutase (SOD), fatty acid synthase (FASN) and cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) were unaffected by the diets. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) were significantly downregulated and upregulated, respectively, in the SBM-based treatments compared with the control. The intestinal villi were significantly shorter and wider in fish fed the CSBM diet compared to the other treatments. The villi height and width were similar between the control and those fed the BSMB + N diet. It may be possible that the unaffected growth by nucleotides were due to an insufficient dose and/or undisrupted nucleotide synthesis due to being cultured under good conditions. Meanwhile, the unaffected growth in the SBM treatment could indicate a tolerance of M. salmoides to plant proteins and associated antinutritional factors. Nevertheless, BSBM and/or nucleotides appeared to mitigate some adverse effects of dietary SBM to the intestinal histomorphology in M. salmoides.

Abstract
Soy saponins, as thermo-stable anti-nutrients in soybean meal (SBM), are the primary causal agents of SBM-induced enteritis, which represents a well-documented pathologic alternation involving the distal intestines of various farmed fish. Our previous work showed that soy saponins might lead to SBM-induced enteritis, destroy tight junction structure and induce oxidative damage in juvenile turbot. Glutamine, as a conditionally essential amino acid, is an important substrate utilized for the growth of intestinal epithelial cells. An 8-week feeding trial was carried out to determine whether glutamine can attenuate the detrimental effects of soy saponins. Three isonitrogenous-isolipidic experimental diets were formulated as follows: (i) fish meal-based diet (FM), considered as control; (ii) FM + 10 g/kg soy saponins, SAP; and (iii) SAP + 15 g/kg glutamine, GLN. The results showed that dietary soy saponins significantly increased the gene expression levels of inflammatory markers (IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α) and related signaling factors (NF-кB, AP-1, p38, JNK and ERK), which were remarkably attenuated by dietary glutamine. Compared to SAP group, GLN-fed fish exhibited significantly higher expression levels of tight junction genes (CLDN3, CLDN4, OCLN, Tricellulin and ZO-1). Glutamine supplementation in SAP diet markedly suppressed the production of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl, and enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes as well as the mRNA levels of HO-1, SOD, GPX and Nrf2. Furthermore, GLN-fed fish had a remarkably lower number of autophagosomes compared to SAP-fed fish. In conclusion, our study indicated that glutamine could reverse the harmful effects of soy saponins on intestinal inflammation, tight junction disruption and oxidative damage, via attenuation of NF-кB, AP-1 and MAPK pathways and activation of Nrf2 pathway. Glutamine may have the function of controlling autophaghic process within an appropriate level of encountering inflammation.

Abstract
The effects of dietary resveratrol (0, 300, 400 and 500 mg/kg) on the chemical composition, antioxidative capacity, meat quality and volatile compound concentrations of duck meat were investigated. The results showed that dietary resveratrol had no significant effects on the chemical composition. Dietary resveratrol supplementation increased superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase activity, pH15 min, pH24 h and color, and reduced the malondialdehyde, and carbonyl contents and shear force, thereby improving water mobility and distribution (T2b, T21, T22), drip loss, cooking loss and volatile compounds concentration of duck meat. In conclusion, dietary resveratrol supplementation improved the meat quality of ducks by enhancing the antioxidant capacity, improving the color and shear force, and suppressing lipid and protein oxidation, and 500 mg/kg dietary resveratrol had the greatest effect in this study.

Abstract
The redox system is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis. When redox homeostasis is disrupted through an increase of reactive oxygen species or a decrease of antioxidants, oxidative distress occurs resulting in multiple tissue and systemic responses and damage. Poultry, swine and fish, raised in commercial conditions, are exposed to different stressors that can affect their productivity. Some dietary stressors can generate oxidative distress and alter the health status and subsequent productive performance of commercial farm animals. For several years, researchers used different dietary stressors to describe the multiple and detrimental effects of oxidative distress in animals. Some of these dietary challenge models, including oxidized fats and oils, exposure to excess heavy metals, soybean meal, protein or amino acids, and feeding diets contaminated with mycotoxins are discussed in this review. A better understanding of the oxidative distress mechanisms associated with dietary stressors allows for improved understanding and evaluation of feed additives as mitigators of oxidative distress.

Abstract
An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to investigate and confront the putative functions of chitosan (CTS) and chitooligosaccharide (COS) in the growth and homoeostasis of distal intestine in juvenile turbots fed diets containing soyabean meal (SBM). Three isolipidic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated by supplemented basal diet (based on a 400 g/kg SBM) with 7·5 g/kg CTS or with 2·0 g/kg COS. Our results indicated that both CTS and COS supplementation could significantly improve (i) the growth performance and feed efficiency ratio; (ii) antioxidant activity driven by metabolic enzymes (i.e. catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase); (iii) glutathione levels; (iv) acid phosphatase and lysozyme activity and (v) IgM content. As a result, these two particular prebiotics were able to significantly attenuate the histological alterations due to local inflammation as well as to decrease the transcriptional levels of proinflammatory cytokines (i.e. IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α) and major pathway effectors (i.e. activator protein-1 (AP-1), NF-кB, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase and extracellular regulated kinase). High-throughput sequencing data indicated that dietary CTS and COS could significantly decrease the diversity of intestinal bacteria but elevate the relative abundances of Bacillus, Lactobacillus and Pseudomonas genera. Altogether, these findings suggest that CTS and COS can improve growth of turbot, enhance intestinal immune and anti-oxidant systems and promote the balance of intestinal microbiota. The protective effects, elicited by these two prebiotics, against SBM-induced inflammation could be attributed to their roles in alleviating the overexpression of inflammatory cytokines by possibly down-regulating NF-кB, AP-1 and/or mitogen-activated protein kinases pathways.

Abstract
The development of functional materials for osteoporosis is ultimately required for bone remodeling. However, grafts were accompanied by increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines that impaired bone formation. In this work, nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA)/resveratrol (Res)/chitosan (CS) composite microspheres were designed to create a beneficial microenvironment and help improve the osteogenesis by local sustained release of Res. Study of in vitro release confirmed the feasibility of n-HA/Res/CS microspheres for controlled Res release. Notably, microspheres had anti-inflammatory activity evidenced by the decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β and iNOS in RAW264.7 cells in a dose dependent manner. Further, enhanced adhesion and proliferation of BMSCs seeded onto microspheres demonstrated that composite microspheres were conducive to cell growth. The ability to enhance osteo-differentiation was supported by up-regulation of Runx2, ALP, Col-1 and OCN, and substantial mineralization in osteogenic medium. When implanted into bone defects in the osteoporotic rat femoral condyles, enhanced entochondrostosis and bone regeneration suggested that the n-HA/Res/CS composite microspheres were more favorable for impaired fracture healing. The results indicated that optimized n-HA/Res/CS composite microspheres could serve as promising multifunctional fillers for osteoporotic bone defect/fracture treatment. The microspheres with sustained Res release possessed obvious anti-inflammatory activity. The microspheres were favorable for cell growth and osteo-differentiation. Higher Res-loaded microspheres significantly improved entochondrostosis and bone remodeling. The microspheres are promising bone fillers for the healing of osteoporotic bone defects/fractures.

Abstract
The mucosal surfaces of fish play numerous roles including, but not limited to, protection against pathogens, nutrient digestion and absorption, excretion of nitrogenous wastes and osmotic regulation. During infection or disease, these surfaces act as the first line of defense, where the mucosal immune system interacts closely with the associated microbiota to maintain homeostasis. This study evaluated microbial changes across the gut and skin mucosal surfaces in yellowtail kingfish displaying signs of gut inflammation, as well as explored the host gene expression in these tissues in order to improve our understanding of the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of these conditions. For this, we obtained and analyzed 16S rDNA and transcriptomic (RNA-Seq) sequence data from the gut and skin mucosa of fish exhibiting different health states (i.e., healthy fish and fish at the early and late stages of enteritis). Both the gut and skin microbiota were perturbed by the disease. More specifically, the gastrointestinal microbiota of diseased fish was dominated by an uncultured Mycoplasmataceae sp., and fish at the early stage of the disease showed a significant loss of diversity in the skin. Using transcriptomics, we found that only a few genes were significantly differentially expressed in the gut. In contrast, gene expression in the skin differed widely between health states, in particular in the fish at the late stage of the disease. These changes were associated with several metabolic pathways that were differentially expressed and reflected a weakened host. Altogether, this study highlights the sensitivity of the skin mucosal surface in response to gut inflammation.

Abstract
A 10-week feeding experiment was conducted to reveal the immune mechanism for soybean meal-induced enteritis (SBMIE) in hybrid grouper, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated by replacing 0, 10, 30, and 50% fish meal protein with soybean meal (namely FM, SBM10, SBM30, and SBM50, respectively). The weight gain rate of the SBM50 group was significantly lower than those of the other groups. Plica height, muscular layer thickness, and goblet cells of the distal intestine in the SBM50 group were much lower than those in the FM group. The intestinal transcriptomic data, including the transcriptome and miRNAome, showed that a total of 6,390 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 92 DEmiRNAs were identified in the SBM50 and FM groups. DEmiRNAs (10 known and 1 novel miRNAs) and their DE target genes were involved in immune-related phagosome, natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity, Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis, and the intestinal immune network for IgA production pathways. Our study is the first to offer transcriptomic and small RNA profiling for SBMIE in hybrid grouper. Our findings offer important insights for the understanding of the RNA profile and further elucidation of the underlying molecular immune mechanism for SBMIE in carnivorous fish.

Abstract
Background Resveratrol is reported to inhibit the growth of prostate, which is characteristic of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) condition. However, the mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the effects and probable mechanism of resveratrol on BPH. Methods We used the BPH epithelial cell line BPH-1 to investigate the effect of resveratrol. Cells were treated with various concentrations of resveratrol, and its effects on cells viability, apoptosis, ROS accumulation, and cell cycle were assessed. Western blot was used to examine activation of p38 MAPK and protein levels of FOXO3a, Bcl2, Bcl-XL, and caspase3. Cells were also co-treated with the p38 MAPK inhibitor SB203580 or ROS scavenger N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) to further investigate the mechanism. Results Resveratrol treatment inhibited the growth of BPH-1 and increased apoptosis of cells. In addition, levels of phosphorylated p38 MAPK level was elevated and FOXO3a repression was observed. Concomitantly, ROS was accumulated. All of these resveratrol-mediated effects were suppressed by additional treatment with SB203580 or NAC. Resveratrol was also found to induce cell cycle arrest at S phase. Conclusions Resveratrol can activate p38 MAPK and repress FOXO3a, thereby causing repression of SOD2, catalase, and increase of ROS accumulation, leading to apoptosis in BPH-1 cells.
