Total concentrations and sources of heavy metal pollution in global river and lake water bodies from 1972 to 2017

A probabilistic risk assessment of heavy metal in water and sediment: An industrially affected urban river in Bangladesh

Human welfare and biodiversity are at risk due to the deterioration of water and sediment quality. Particularly, in last few decades, global water and sediment quality degraded due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization. This study aimed to determine the concentration of nine heavy metals and metalloid (Pb, Cr, Cd, Hg, As, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and assess the ecological risks using different pollution indices (e.g., heavy metal pollution index [HPI], Nemerow pollution index [NI], geo-accumulation index [Igeo], contamination factor [CF], degree of contamination [CD] and pollution load index [PLI], ecological risk index [ERI]) in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, an industrially affected urban river of Bangladesh. For the first time, 20 water and sediment samples were collected across a wider geographical area of the Shitalakshya River during both monsoon and dry seasons and analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrometer. Average concentrations of heavy metals and metalloid in water were within the Bangladesh standard except for Cr (51.69 ppb) and Mn (228.20 ppb) during monsoon season, portraying potential ecological and human health risks. Besides, average concentration of Mn (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), Ni (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), and Cu (45.34 and 36.09 ppb) in sediment during both seasons were above international standard, implying risk to aquatic sediment biota. The average HPI values indicated moderate to high contamination, whereas the NI values implied polluted water in monsoon season with severe pollution in port area of the river. Similarly, Igeo, CF, CD, and PLI elucidated different levels of contamination in the sediment, particularly during dry season. The ERI values also referred moderate ecological risk in the sediment during dry season. Overall, our findings highlight the alarming level of heavy metal pollution in the Shitalakshya River, necessitating immediate action to protect the aquatic environment, sediment biota, and human health. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This study determined the concentration of heavy metals and metalloid in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, Bangladesh. The study revealed that the average concentration of Cr and Mn in water exceeded national standard, whereas Mn, Ni, and Cu in sediment exceeded international limit. Potential ecological risk of heavy metals was also assessed using different pollution indices. Calculated pollution indices indicated different degree of pollution, implying critical ecological condition due to heavy metal pollution in aquatic environment and sediment biota.

Understanding heavy metal toxicity: Implications on human health, marine ecosystems and bioremediation strategies

Heavy metals are constituents of the natural environment and are of great importance to both natural and artificial processes. But in recent times the indiscriminate use of heavy metals especially for human purposes has caused an imbalance in natural geochemical cycles. This imbalance has caused contamination of heavy metals into natural resources and such as soil and a marine ecosystem. Long exposure and higher accumulation of given heavy metals are known to impose detrimental and even lethal effects on humans. Conventional remediation techniques of heavy metals provide good results but have negative side effects on surrounding environment. The role played by microbes in bioremediation of heavy metals is well reported in the literature and understanding the role of molecules in the process of metal accumulation its reduction and transformation into less hazardous state, has myriads of biotechnological implications for bioremediation of metal-contaminated sites. The current review presents the implications of heavy metals on human health and marine ecosystems, conventional methods of heavy metal removal and their side effects on the environment. Bioremediation approaches have been discussed as well in this review, proving to be a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach towards remediation of heavy metals.

Interspecific barrier effect driven by heavy metals makes soil bacterial functional assembly more stochastic

Residual heavy metals in soils will destroy microbial community stability and influence its aggregation. However, exploring microbial ecology under heavy-metal stress still requires a conjoint analysis of bacterial interspecies communication and the community diversity maintenance mechanism. In this study, soil samples were collected from a heavy-metal-contaminated site in China to investigate the ecological response of indigenous microbial communities through high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that bacterial taxa and functions generated unusual decoupling phenomena. There were no significant differences in the diversity of species with the increase in concentration of heavy metals (Hg, Se, and Cr), but the functional diversity was lost. Also, the average niche breadth of bacterial species increased from 1.70 to 2.28, but community stability declined and the species assembly was always a deterministic process (NST <0.5). After the bacterial functional assembly changed from a stochastic process to a deterministic process (NST <0.5), it was transformed into a stochastic process (NST >0.5) again under the stress of high-concentration heavy metals, indicating that the collective stress resistance of bacterial communities changed from positive mutation into passive functional propagation. The research results can provide new insight into understanding the adaptive evolution of communities and ecosystem restoration under the stress of soil heavy metals.

A comprehensive scenario of heavy metals pollution in the rivers of Bangladesh during the last two decades

For decades, rivers have been used for transporting pollutants loaded with heavy metals (HMs) causing severe pollution in downstream. The current study aimed to review the levels and sources of 10 HMs, viz. As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, and Zn in the surface water of the rivers in Bangladesh. The PRISMA criteria were used to conduct a systematic review of the available literature published between 2001 and 2020, and thus a total of 55 documents were finally selected for review. The mean concentration of each HM exceeding the threshold limits as per World Health Organization (WHO), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and Department of Environment (DoE), Bangladesh standards were higher in the last decade (2011-2020) than in the previous one (2001-2010). Most HM concentrations in water were found above the threshold limits in three divisions (Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Chattogram). The Buriganga River in Dhaka has been the top polluted river in Bangladesh. Among the 10 HMs, six metals (As, Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, and Mn) exceeded the limit set by WHO, USEPA, and DoE in all three seasons, where mean values of most of the HMs were found to be the highest in the summer season. Statistical analyses identified possible sources of HMs such as natural weathering, electroplating, fertilizers and pesticides, mining and manufacturing, textiles, coal mining and burning, batteries, and paint industries. Strong legislations and regulations, awareness programs, continuous monitoring, and comprehensive research are urgently needed to control riverine HMs pollution in Bangladesh.

Serum metabolic changes link metal mixture exposures to vascular endothelial inflammation in residents living surrounding rivers near abandoned lead-zinc mines

Metal exposure is associated with vascular endothelial inflammation, an early pathological phenotype of atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. However, the underlying mechanism linking exposure, metabolic changes, and outcomes remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the metabolic changes underlying the associations of chronic exposure to metal mixtures with vascular endothelial inflammation. We recruited 960 adults aged 20-75 years from residential areas surrounding rivers near abandoned lead-zinc mine and classified them into river area and non-river area exposure groups. Urine levels of 25 metals, Framingham risk score (FRS), and serum concentrations of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), as biomarkers of vascular endothelial inflammation, were assessed. A "meet-in-the-middle" approach was applied to identify causal intermediate metabolites and metabolic pathways linking metal exposure to vascular endothelial inflammation in representative metabolic samples from 64 participants. Compared to the non-river area exposure group, the river area exposure group had significantly greater urine concentrations of chromium, copper, cadmium, and lead; lower urine concentrations of selenium; elevated FRS; and increased concentrations of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. In total, 38 differentially abundant metabolites were identified between the river area and non-river area exposure groups. Among them, 25 metabolites were significantly associated with FRS, 8 metabolites with ICAM-1 expression, and 10 metabolites with VCAM-1 expression. Furthermore, fructose, ornithine, alpha-ketoglutaric acid, urea, and cytidine monophosphate, are potential mediators of the relationship between metal exposure and vascular endothelial inflammation. Additionally, the metabolic changes underlying these effects included changes in arginine and proline metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, galactose metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, suggesting the disturbance of amino acid metabolism, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, nucleotide metabolism, and glycolysis. Overall, our results reveal biomechanisms that may link chronic exposure to multiple metals with vascular endothelial inflammation and elevated cardiovascular risk.

Application of multi-criteria group decision-making for water quality management

As waste discharge into numerous river systems escalates, the pollution of water bodies typically rises. Given the limited capacity of rivers to withstand pollution and their constrained self-cleaning capabilities, treated pollutants from waste discharge must be released into the river. Despite numerous models and algorithms proposed for managing river water quality to meet standards, literature, to our awareness, lacks the utilization of a comprehensive multi-criteria group decision-making approach for water quality management, particularly in river systems. Therefore, this research introduces a new, comprehensive multi-criteria group decision-making for the management of water quality in the Haraz River basin, located in Iran. To do so, the water quality of the basin, a one-dimensional water quality model, QUAL2Kw, was employed to simulate and calibrate the water quality along the river. The simulation results revealed that the downstream water quality violates the water quality standards. To mitigate this issue, various scenarios for waste load allocation (WLA) were evaluated, including no wastewater treatment, primary wastewater treatment, advanced secondary wastewater treatment utilizing the activated sludge (AS) method, and advanced wastewater treatment via the membrane bioreactor (MBR) method. Utilizing the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Fuzzy TOPSIS group decision-making model, it was determined that the optimal solution was the implementation of secondary wastewater treatment utilizing the activated sludge method for the 11 PS of pollution, while still adhering to Iranian water quality standard. In addition, the findings of the present study indicate that the implementation of primary wastewater treatment, advanced secondary wastewater treatment utilizing AS, and advanced wastewater treatment through MBR within the study area led to a significant enhancement in water quality. This enhancement ranged from 35 to 105% across various scenarios when compared to conditions where no actions were taken to the treatment of water.

Composition of heavy metals in sediment, water, and fish of the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers in two major cities of India

The rapid industrial development in the Indian capital region has led to significant waste generation, which, despite undergoing treatment prior to disposal, contributes substantially to water body contamination. Given the diverse nature of these wastes and their potential repercussions across the food chain, a study was conducted to evaluate heavy metal contamination levels in the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers of two major cities. Six heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, Cu, Cr, and Zn) were analyzed in fish, water, and sediment samples by utilizing flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Avanta Σ) from March 2019 to February 2020. Results revealed distinct heavy metal distribution patterns, with Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Ganga River and Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Yamuna River for fish samples. Additionally, levels of Hg in Cyprinus carpio and Sperata oar from the Ganga River, and Pb, Cd, Hg, and Cr in Salmophasia bacaila and Mystus cavasius from the Yamuna River exceeded WHO/FAO permissible limits. In water samples, the predominant heavy metal sequences were Pb > Cu > Zn > Cr > Cd > Hg for the Ganga River and Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg for the Yamuna River, with Pb, Cr, Zn, and Cd surpassing WHO standards. Sediment analysis revealed varying heavy metal compositions, with Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Ganga River and Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Hg in the Yamuna River. While drinking water and fish from the Ganga River were deemed safe for consumption, those from the Yamuna River were not. Given the toxic nature of heavy metals and their detrimental health impacts, regular monitoring and effective management strategies are imperative.

Advances in the integration of microalgal communities for biomonitoring of metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa

This review elucidated the recent advances in integrating microalgal communities in monitoring metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also highlighted the potential of incorporating microalgae as bioindicators in emerging technologies, identified research gaps, and suggested directions for further research in biomonitoring of metal pollution. Reputable online scholarly databases were used to identify research articles published between January 2000 and June 2023 for synthesis. Results indicated that microalgae were integrated either individually or combined with other bioindicators, mainly macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, and fish, alongside physicochemical monitoring. There was a significantly low level of integration (< 1%) of microalgae for biomonitoring aquatic metal pollution in SSA compared to other geographical regions. Microalgal communities were employed to assess compliance (76%), in diagnosis (38%), and as early-warning systems (38%) of aquatic ecological health status. About 14% of biomonitoring studies integrated microalgal eDNA, while other technologies, such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and biosensors, are yet to be significantly incorporated. Nevertheless, there is potential for the aforementioned emerging technologies for monitoring aquatic metal pollution in SSA. Future monitoring in the region should also consider the standardisation and synchronisation of integrative biomonitoring and embrace the "Citizen Science" concept at national and regional scales.

Green synthesis of nZVI-modified biochar significantly enhanced the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution

Water contamination by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) seriously jeopardizes human health, which is a pressing environmental concern. Biochar-loaded green-synthesized nZVI, as a green and environmentally friendly material, can efficiently reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) while removing Cr(VI) from water. Therefore, in this study, an efficient green-modified biochar material (TP-nZVI/BC) was successfully prepared using tea polyphenol (TP) and sludge biochar (BC) using a low-cost and environmentally friendly green synthesis method. The preparation conditions of TP-nZVI/BC were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), revealing that the dosage of tea polyphenols plays a crucial role in the removal performance (R2 = 1271.09), followed by reaction time and temperature. The quadratic regression model proved accurate. The optimal preparation conditions are as follows: tea polyphenols (TP) dosage at 48 g/L, reaction temperature at 75 ℃, and a reaction time of 3 h. TP-nZVI/BC removed Cr(VI) from water at a rate 7.6 times greater than BC. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.987) accurately describes the adsorption process, suggesting that chemical adsorption predominantly controls the removal process. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by TP-nZVI/BC can be well described by the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 105.65 mg/g. FTIR and XPS analyses before and after adsorption demonstrate that nZVI plays a crucial role in the reduction process of Cr(VI), and the synergistic effects of surface adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation enhance Cr(VI) removal. In summary, using green-modified biochar for Cr(VI) removal is a feasible and promising method with significant potential.

Spatial distribution characteristics of soil heavy metals in Sabao Chaqu watershed of Tuotuo river, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau based on geographic detector

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau belongs to the area of extremely fragile environment and sensitive to human activities. In recent years, more and more human interference has been detected in this area. In this study, 128 surface soil samples were collected from the Sabao Chaqu watershed of the Tuotuo river at the source of the Yangtze River on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The soil pollution status and spatial distribution characteristics of Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn and Ni were evaluated by soil accumulation index, enrichment factor, pollution index and geographical detector. The results showed that the average contents of As, Cd, Pb and Zn in the study area were 1.2-3.64 times higher than soil background values of Tibet, while the contents of Hg, Cr, Cu and Ni were lower than the background values, while the average content of As was higher than the soil pollution risk screening value (GB15618-2018), and the pollution index showed that As was in a low pollution state, while the other 7 heavy metals were in a safe state. There were significant differences in the spatial distribution of 8 heavy metals and there was a significant correlation with soil properties and distance factors. Factor detection showed that natural factors had the strongest explanatory power to the contents of As, Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni, distance from the lake and soil Sc content had the strongest explanatory power to Hg content, and anthropogenic factors had the strongest explanatory power to Pb content. Interaction detection revealed that the q values of the strongest interaction explanatory power for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 2.81, 4.30, 1.26, 2.47, 2.33, 1.59, 6.37, and 5.08 times higher than their strongest factor detection explanatory power, respectively. The interaction between anthropogenic factors and other factors has an important influence on the spatial differentiation of heavy metals in the study area. Risk detection showed that the average contents of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn were the highest in the subregions of MgO, TS, Sc, X6, X13, MgO, TN and X4, respectively. Comprehensive study shows that the spatial differentiation of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn is mainly affected by natural factors, but there are also some anthropogenic factors, the spatial differentiation of Hg is affected by both natural factors and atmospheric deposition, and the spatial distribution characteristics of Pb are mainly affected by anthropogenic factors.

Factors affecting the performance of a pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant: Characterization of effluent and environmental risk

Pharmaceutical industries produce a huge volume of emerging pollutants (EPs) that pose a threat to the aqueous environment. Biological processes have shown their inefficacy in treating many pharmaceutical products. The study assessed physicochemical parameters, EPs, heavy metals in pharmaceutical industrial wastewater, and the removal efficiency (RE) of an aerobic biological treatment plant. The study also assessed the contamination levels and risk using several indices, such as the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), heavy metal evaluation index (HEI), and risk quotients index (RQs). The study found that the treated water quality was poor, having antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and others, along with several transformation products (TPs) and heavy metals, which were unsafe for consumption with high environmental risk. The analysis results showed that the RE for TSS, BOD5, COD, TDS, and EC were found to be 91.80%, 86.81%, 72.29%, 72.20%, and 65.60%, respectively, where the values of BOD5, COD, NO3-, and PO43- in the effluent were still higher than the permissible limits of the ECR (2023). However, the RE for heavy metals was in the order of Cu (84.62%) > Fe (65.04%) > Mn (63.3%) > Zn (60.58%) > Cd (53.85%) > Ni (54.12%) > Pb (42.42%) > Cr (38%), where Cr and Cd concentrations were still higher than the permissible limit of DoE (2019). The Pearson correlation and PCA suggested that EC, TDS, TSS, DO, BOD5, and COD were the most correlating and contributing variables. This study argued that metal-ligand behaviors mainly affect the removal efficiency of the treatment plant by lowering the removal rate of heavy metals and pharmaceutical products.

Emerging insights into the impacts of heavy metals exposure on health, reproductive and productive performance of livestock

Heavy metals, common environmental pollutants with widespread distribution hazards and several health problems linked to them are distinguished from other toxic compounds by their bioaccumulation in living organisms. They pollute the food chain and threaten the health of animals. Biologically, heavy metals exhibit both beneficial and harmful effects. Certain essential heavy metals such as Co, Mn, Se, Zn, and Mg play crucial roles in vital physiological processes in trace amounts, while others like As, Pb, Hg, Cd, and Cu are widely recognized for their toxic properties. Regardless of their physiological functions, an excess intake of all heavy metals beyond the tolerance limit can lead to toxicity. Animals face exposure to heavy metals through contaminated feed and water, primarily as a result of anthropogenic environmental pollution. After ingestion heavy metals persist in the body for an extended duration and the nature of exposure dictates whether they induce acute or chronic, clinical or subclinical, or subtle toxicities. The toxic effects of metals lead to disruption of cellular homeostasis through the generation of free radicals that develop oxidative stress. In cases of acute heavy metal poisoning, characteristic clinical symptoms may arise, potentially culminating in the death of animals with corresponding necropsy findings. Chronic toxicities manifest as a decline in overall body condition scoring and a decrease in the production potential of animals. Elevated heavy metal levels in consumable animal products raise public health concerns. Timely diagnosis, targeted antidotes, and management strategies can significantly mitigate heavy metal impact on livestock health, productivity, and reproductive performance.

Spatiotemporal variations, sources, pollution status and health risk assessment of dissolved trace elements in a major Arabian Sea draining river: insights from multivariate statistical and machine learning approaches

River Mahi drains through semi-arid regions (Western India) and is a major Arabian Sea draining river. As the principal surface water source, its water quality is important to the regional population. Therefore, the river water was sampled extensively (n = 64, 16 locations, 4 seasons and 2 years) and analyzed for 11 trace elements (TEs; Sr, V, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd, Ba, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co). Machine learning (ML) and multivariate statistical analysis (MVSA) were applied to investigate their possible sources, spatial-temporal-annual variations, evaluate multiple water quality parameters [heavy metal pollution index (HPI), heavy metal evaluation index (HEI)], and health indices [hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (THI)] associated with TEs. TE levels were higher than their corresponding world average values in 100% (Sr, V and Zn), 78%(Cu), 41%(Ni), 27%(Cr), 9%(Cd), 8%(Ba), 8%(Co), 6%(Fe), and 0%(Mn), of the samples. Three principal components (PCs) accounted for 74.5% of the TE variance: PC-1 (Fe, Co, Mn and Cu) and PC-2 (Sr and Ba) are contributed from geogenic sources, while PC-3 (Cr, Ni and Zn) are derived from geogenic and anthropogenic sources. HPI, HEI, HQ and THI all indicate that water quality is good for domestic purposes and poses little hazard. ML identified Random forest as the most suitable model for predicting HEI class (accuracy: 92%, recall: 92% and precision: 94%). Even with a limited dataset, the study underscores the potential application of ML to predictive classification modeling.

Heavy metal pollution in surface water bodies in provincial Khanh Hoa, Vietnam: Pollution and human health risk assessment, source quantification, and implications for sustainable management and development

The global issue of heavy metal pollution in surface water poses a significant concern, with the potential to harm public health through various pathways. Given that pollution levels are dependent on water bodies and seasons and their potential impacts on human health vary with children and adults, it is crucial to identify and quantify pollution sources for the development of sustainable management strategies. The current study aimed to evaluate pollution levels and associated health risks of heavy metals and to quantify their pollution sources in various surface water bodies in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam. Water samples were taken from three water bodies (reservoirs, rivers, and narrow waterways) during two seasons (dry and rainy) from 2016 to 2020 and analyzed for seven heavy metals. The results showed that iron had the highest concentration of 392.4 (μg L-1), followed by zinc (25.7 μg L-1), arsenic (3.93 μg L-1), copper (3.77 μg L-1), lead (2.77 μg L-1), chromium (2.71 μg L-1), and cadmium (0.57 μg L-1). Narrow waterways were more polluted with heavy metals (heavy metal pollution index, HPI = 29.5) than other water bodies, such as rivers (23.3) and reservoirs (21.7), and the dry season had a higher HPI (26.5) than the rainy season (24.0). The hazard index for children varied from 1.2 to 1.48, while that for adults was less than 1, suggesting that surface water may have adverse impacts on children's health. The factor analysis identified three primary sources of contamination, namely combustion emissions/street dust, agricultural run-off, and other sources. Cadmium is the most critical metal in determining HPI, while arsenic and chromium are the two key elements potentially influencing children's health. Managing pollution sources, reducing the metal concentration, and controlling the pathways through which metals enter the human body should be implemented for a healthier environment and long-term development.

Water quality assessment of Elgo river in Ethiopia using CCME, WQI and IWQI for domestic and agricultural usage

The increasing demand for water due to the escalation in population and aggressive agricultural activities for drinking and irrigation purposes in the rural areas of Ethiopia has put tremendous stress on water requirements. The Elgo River in southern Ethiopia is deteriorating due to sedimentation, soil erosion, stormwater runoff, and anthropogenic activities. Elgo village faces water shortages and a lack of safe drinking water. The purpose of this research was to identify the extent of pollution in Elgo River water using the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME), Water Quality Index (WQI), and Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI). A total of 12 water samples were collected from 3 river sampling sites for the dry and wet seasons to test the physicochemical and biological parameters. Results obtained were: turbidity (46.5-156) NTU, colour (103.65-606.5) TCU, EC (182-268) μS/cm, TDS (192.5-275.5) mg/l, TSS (680-2774) mg/l, Ca2+ (22-45) mg/l, Mg2+ (19.5-23.5) mg/l, Cl- (10.5-16.65) mg/l, and SO42- (17.18-47) mg/l for both the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The CCME WQI revealed that the overall results were 38.38 for the dry season and 36.6 for the wet season for drinking water parameters. The CCME WQI categorization indicates that the Elgo River water is classified as poor, with results ranging from 0 to 44. For irrigation purposes 10, parameters such as SAR, PS, PI, MAR, KI, RSC, EC, SSP, TH, and %Na were examined to compute indices using the IWQI model. The overall result of water quality indicated that IWQIs of 81.4 and 62.14 are good for the dry season and poor for the wet season, respectively. This research provides a thorough analysis through modelling to determine the suitability of water for different purposes for the tribal and backward communities of the area.

Comparative subchronic toxicity of copper and a tertiary copper mixture to early life stage rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): impacts on growth, development, and histopathology

This research aimed to characterize and compare the subchronic impacts of Cu to a Cu, Cd, and Zn mixture in early life stages of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) by examining uptake, survival, growth, development, and histopathology parameters. To accomplish this, rainbow trout were exposed for 31 days from eyed embryos to the swim-up fry life stage to waterborne Cu (31, 47, 70, and 104 μg/L) individually or as mixture containing Cd (4.1, 6.2, 9.3, and 14 μg/L) and Zn (385, 578, 867, and 1300 μg/L). Exposures elicited pronounced effects on survival when Cu was administered as a mixture (LC25 = 32.9 μg/L Cu) versus individually (LC25 = 46.3 μg/L Cu). Mixtures of Cu, Cd, and Zn also elicited more pronounced sublethal toxicity relative to equivalent Cu treatments with respect to reduced yolk sac resorption and increased incidence and/or severity of gill, liver, and kidney lesions. Our findings of reduced body weight (EC10, Cu = 55.0 μg/L Cu; EC10, Cu+Cd+Zn = 58.9 μg/L Cu), yolk sac resorption (LOECCu = 70 μg/L Cu; LOECCu+Cd+Zn = 70 μg/L Cu), coelomic fat (LOECCu = 47 μg/L Cu; LOECCu+Cd+Zn = 70 μg/L Cu), and increased hepatocellular cytoplasmic vacuolation (LOECCu = 70 μg/L Cu; LOECCu+Cd+Zn = 47 μg/L Cu) collectively indicate a complicated metabolic interference by metals in exposed fish. These lethal and sublethal effects observed in the laboratory could translate to reduced survival and fitness of wild salmonid populations inhabiting waterbodies receiving wastewater or runoff containing multiple metals at elevated concentrations.

Effect of lead ions on biochemical behavior of Cladophora glomerata in sterilized and non-sterilized media

Freshwater ecosystems are under peril globally due to anthropogenic influences, most notably metals. The present study aimed to evaluate the morphological and biochemical responses of Cladophora glomerata obtained from a freshwater stream to various lead concentrations (0.0, 7.5, 15, 30, and 60 mg/L Pb2+) in sterilized and non-sterilized media. Pigments, proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), total phenolic compounds (TPC), hydrogen peroxide, and protein content of the green alga were determined in response to various growing conditions. Pb2+ stress had a detrimental effect not only on biochemical components of C. glomerata but also on the algal cell's shape and surface structure. High Pb2+ concentrations significantly decreased chlorophyll-a (from 1350 μg/g in non-sterilized and 1340 μg/g in sterilized media for the control group to 1067 μg/g in non-sterilized and 1049 μg/g in sterile media at 60 mg/L Pb2+) and protein contents (from 34.47 mg/g for the sterilized and 35.89 mg/g for non-sterilized of the control to 24.82 mg/g for the sterilized and 26.18 mg/g for the non-sterilized at 60 mg/L Pb2+) of algal biomass but increased the concentrations of stress compounds (e.g., MDA, proline, and TPC). Variation in the macroalgal biomass composition was also indicated by FTIR analysis based on interactions between amino, amide, and anionic surface groups on the algal biomass and Pb2+ ions. Morphological and biochemical responses of C. glomerata reveal that non-sterile conditions encouraged the proliferation of this macroalga under Pb2+ exposure.

Plummeting toxic contaminates from water through phycoremediation: Mechanism, influencing factors and future outlook to enhance the capacity of living and non-living algae

Freshwater habitats hold a unique role in the survival of all living organisms and supply water for drinking, irrigation, and life support activities. In recent decades, due to anthropogenic activities, deterioration in the water quality has been a long-lasting problem and challenge to the scientific fraternity. Although, these freshwater bodies have a bearable intrinsic capacity for pollution load however alarming increase in pollution limits the intrinsic capacities and requires additional technological interventions. The release of secondary pollutants from conventional interventions further needs revisiting the existing methodologies and asking for green interventions. Green interventions such as phycoremediation are natural, eco-friendly, economic, and energy-efficient alternatives and provide additional benefits such as nutrient recovery, biofuel production, and valuable secondary metabolites from polluted freshwater bodies. This systemic review in a nut-shell comprises the recent research insights on phycoremediation, technological implications, and influencing factors, and further discusses the associated mechanisms of metal ions biosorption by living and non-living algae, its advantages, and limitations. Besides, the article explores the possibility of future research prospects for applicability at a field scale that will help in the efficient utilization of resources, and improved ecological and health risks.

Research progress and hotspots on microbial remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil: a systematic review and future perspectives

Microbial remediation technology has received much attention as a green, ecological, and inexpensive technology, and there is great potential for the application of microbial remediation technology for heavy metals (HMs) contaminated soil alone and in conjunction with other technologies in environmental remediation. To gain an in-depth understanding of the latest research progress, research hotspots, and development trends on microbial remediation of HMs-contaminated soil, and to objectively reflect the scientific contributions and impacts of relevant countries/regions, institutions, and individuals of this field, in this manuscript, ISI Web of Knowledge's Web of Science™ core collection database, data visualization, and analysis software Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and HistCite Pro were used to collect and analyze the relevant literature from 2000 to 2022, and 1409 publications were subjected to scientometric analyses. It involved 327 journals, 5150 authors, 75 countries/regions, and 2740 keywords. The current progress and hotspots on microbial remediation of HMs-contaminated soil since the twenty-first century were analyzed in terms of the top 10 most productive countries (regions), high-yielding authors, source journals, important research institutions, and hotspots of research directions. Over the past 22 years, China, India, and the USA have been the countries with the most articles. The institution and author with the most publications are the Chinese Acad Sci and Zhu YG, respectively. Journal of Hazardous Materials is the most productive journal. The keywords showed 6 co-occurrence clusters. These findings revealed the research hotspots, knowledge gaps, and future exploration trends related to microbial remediation of HMs-contaminated soil.

Ecological risk assessment for metals in sediment and waters from the Brazilian Amazon region

Pollution by metals is a matter of concern around the world. In recent decades, the high population growth in urban centers has significantly magnified the entry of these pollutants into aquatic ecosystems. The Amazon region, intense migratory flow, gold mining, and industrialization have been considered the main driving forces for increasing metal pollution. Thus, the main aim of this study is to conduct, for the first time, an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) based on metal concentrations measured in the sediment and water of several aquatic environments from the Amazon basin, based on the risk quotient values (RQ = measured environmental concentration - MEC/predicted no effect concentration - PNEC). In addition, the metal contamination factor (CF) was estimated. Although metal concentrations in water were generally low, these values were far above the limits established by current national legislation in many areas, showing higher concentrations for the metals Co, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Ni. Concentrations of Mn, Cu, Ba, Pb, Co, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cd, and As were especially high in the sediment for several evaluated environments. The ERA for the water compartment revealed that 56% of the studied areas presented high risk (RQ > 1) for aquatic biota. In the sediment, 66% of the sites presented a high risk and 40% medium risk (RQ = 0.1-1). The CF indicated that 49% of the sampling points had high contamination and only 24%, had low contamination. These results reveal that monitoring studies in the Amazon region, provides important information so that public policies for the preservation of water resources can be strengthened in the Amazon.

An efficient pretreatment method based on AgNPs-doped SnO2 photocatalyst for the accurate detection of heavy metals in organic-rich water samples

Humic acid (HA), the primary composition of natural organic matter (NOM) widely distributed in water and soil, can complex with heavy metal ions (HMIs), i.e., Cd(II) and Pb(II) in this study, which deters the accurate detection of HMIs using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). Hence, in this study, an efficient pretreatment method was proposed to restore the electrochemical signal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by breaking the complexation based on AgNPs-doped SnO2 photocatalyst combined with LP/UV irradiation. Optimization of the key parameters for electrochemical signal restoration including pH for photolysis, AgNPs doping rate, photocatalyst dosage and photolysis time were performed to further elevating the accuracy in the proposed pretreatment method over 96.9% for Cd(II) and Pb(II) in 15 min. The effect of different HA concentrations on SWASV signal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) was also investigated adopting the optimal parameters. Then, the UV-vis absorption spectra, crystal structure, and the morphology of AgNPs-doped SnO2 photocatalyst were investigated to excavate the reasons behind the most excellent AgNPs doping rate to SnO2 in signal restoration. Moreover, the behavior of HA degradation and transformation under LP/UV irradiation was studied to investigate the mechanism of electrochemical signal restoration. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method was testified by comparing detection results with ICP-MS results using real water samples extracted from aquaculture water.

Sources, distribution, associated health risks and remedial technologies for inorganic contamination in groundwater: A review in specific context of the state of Haryana, India

Haryana is one of the leading states in India in the agricultural and industrial production. With the expansion of these sectors, a continuous increase in water demand is leading to water crises arising from overexploitation and quality deterioration of the available water. Contamination of aquifer resources is a significant concern, because majority of population depends on the groundwater for various agricultural, industrial, and domestic needs. This review article provides an overview of groundwater contamination, associated health risks with different contaminants with regions severely affected by poor water quality, and delves in identifying the sources, by observing and recognising the types of industries dominant in the state with types of effluents discharge. It further suggests the possible mitigation measures such as advanced remedial technologies and proper management practices from the consequent contamination sources. It has been observed during the perusal of various studies and data that the degree of contamination was considerably higher in districts with heavy agro-industrial activities. The groundwater resources in three highly industrialized districts were found to be gravely contaminated with toxic heavy metals. Alongwith heavy metals, the salinity, hardness, nitrate, and fluoride are also posing significant problems in the aquifer resources of Haryana state. The article also discusses various technologies for remediation of different pollutants from groundwater so it can be made potable after treatment.

Co-exposure of microplastics and heavy metals in the marine environment and remediation techniques: a comprehensive review

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are significant pollutants in the marine environment, necessitating effective remediation strategies to prevent their release into the sea through sewage and industrial effluent. This comprehensive review explores the current understanding of the co-exposure of MPs and heavy metal-enriched MPs, highlighting the need for effective remediation methods. Various mechanisms, including surface ion complexation, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic forces, contribute to the adsorption of heavy metals onto MPs, with factors like surface area and environmental exposure duration playing crucial roles. Additionally, biofilm formation on MPs alters their chemical properties, influencing metal adsorption behaviors. Different thermodynamic models are used to explain the adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals on MPs. The adsorption process is influenced by various factors, including the morphological characteristics of MPs, their adsorption capacity, and environmental conditions. Additionally, the desorption of heavy metals from MPs has implications for their bioavailability and poses risks to marine organisms, emphasizing the importance of source reduction and remedial measures. Hybrid approaches that combine both conventional and modern technologies show promise for the efficient removal of MPs and heavy metals from marine environments. This review identifies critical gaps in existing research that should be addressed in future studies including standardized sampling methods to ensure accurate data, further investigation into the specific interactions between MPs and metals, and the development of hybrid technologies at an industrial scale. Overall, this review sheds light on the adsorption and desorption mechanisms of heavy metal-enriched MPs, underscoring the necessity of implementing effective remediation strategies.

The synergy of microplastics with the heavy metal zinc has resulted in reducing the toxic effects of zinc on lentil (Lens culinaris) seed germination and seedling growth

There is growing recognition of the impact of the rising presence of microplastics (MPs) on terrestrial plant growth and, in general, the terrestrial ecosystem. Simultaneously, there is growing heavy metal accumulation in agricultural lands at an astonishing rate owing to the overwhelming use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and weedicides. Thus, there is a need to investigate the synergetic effect of MPs along with heavy metals on the inducing combined toxicity. This study investigates effects at smaller exposure periods of a few hours using a novel optical imaging technique, Biospeckle Coherence Tomography. Biospeckle Optical Coherence Tomography (bOCT) is a novel optical imaging technique that we successfully demonstrated earlier in visualizing the internal activity of plants. Previous studies of authors using the bOCT technique have demonstrated its potential in the independent application of polyethylene microplastic (PEMPs) as well as zinc within 6 h after their treatments. The strong inhibitory effect of 100 mg L-1, Zn, and PEMPs alone on the germination of Lens culinaris could be visualized with bOCT. The current study demonstrated that against expectation, combined effects of Zn toxicity were reduced when combined with MPs. This is suggested due to the significant reduction of Zn uptake by the seedlings through the interaction of Zn and MPs in an aqueous solution. Mass-spectrometry results also indicate a reduced intake of Zn. Our findings suggest that PEMPs could be able to reduce the over-availability of Zn, thus mitigating the Zn toxicity on lentils.

A critical review on the removal of toxic pollutants from contaminated water using magnetic hybrids

The persistence of organic/inorganic pollutants in the water has become a serious environmental issue. Among the different pollutants, dyes and heavy metal pollution in waterways are viewed as a global ecological problem that can have an impact on humans, plants, and animals. The necessity to develop a sustainable and environmentally acceptable approach to remove these toxic contaminants from the ecosystem has been raised. In the past two decades, rapid industrialization and anthropogenic activities in developed countries have aggravated environmental pollution. Industrial effluents that are discharged directly into the natural environment taint the water, which has a consequence for the water resources. Magnetic nanohybrids are broadly investigated materials used in the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of poisonous pollutants present across water effluents. In the present review, the toxic health effects of heavy metals and dyes from the water environment have been discussed. This paper reviews the role of magnetic nanohybrids in the removal of pollutants from the water environment, providing an adequate point of view on their new advances regarding their qualities, connection methodologies, execution, and their scale-up difficulties.

Ecological and human health risk assessments of cyanotoxins and heavy metals in a drinking water supply reservoir

Human beings are frequently exposed to a mixture of chemical pollutants through the ingestion of contaminated drinking water. The present study aimed to assess the ecological and human health risks associated with the contamination of cyanotoxins and heavy metals in a drinking water supply reservoir, the Tri An Reservoir (TAR), in Vietnam. Results demonstrated that the concentrations of individual heavy metals varied in the following order: iron (Fe) > lead (Pb) > arsenic (As) > zinc (Zn). Although the ecological potential risk of heavy metals was low during the study period, the concentration of Fe sometimes exceeded the Vietnamese standard for drinking water. Toxic cyanobacteria and microcystins (MCs) frequently occurred in the TAR with the highest density of 198.7 × 103 cells/mL and 7.8 μg/L, respectively, indicating a high risk of health impacts to humans. The results of the study indicate that exposure to heavy metals does not pose any non-carcinogenic health risks for both adults and children. However, the contamination of MCs in the surface water posed a serious disease enhancement to both adults and children through direct ingestion and dermal absorption.

Recent Progress in Multifunctional Graphene-Based Nanocomposites for Photocatalysis and Electrocatalysis Application

The global energy shortage and environmental degradation are two major issues of concern in today's society. The production of renewable energy and the treatment of pollutants are currently the mainstream research directions in the field of photocatalysis. In addition, over the last decade or so, graphene (GR) has been widely used in photocatalysis due to its unique physical and chemical properties, such as its large light-absorption range, high adsorption capacity, large specific surface area, and excellent electronic conductivity. Here, we first introduce the unique properties of graphene, such as its high specific surface area, chemical stability, etc. Then, the basic principles of photocatalytic hydrolysis, pollutant degradation, and the photocatalytic reduction of CO₂ are summarized. We then give an overview of the optimization strategies for graphene-based photocatalysis and the latest advances in its application. Finally, we present challenges and perspectives for graphene-based applications in this field in light of recent developments.

Boosted Tetracycline and Cr(VI) Simultaneous Cleanup over Z-Scheme WO3/CoO p-n Heterojunction with 0D/3D Structure under Visible Light

In this study, a Z-Scheme WO₃/CoO p-n heterojunction with a 0D/3D structure was designed and prepared via a simple solvothermal approach to remove the combined pollution of tetracycline and heavy metal Cr(VI) in water. The 0D WO₃ nanoparticles adhered to the surface of the 3D octahedral CoO to facilitate the construction of Z-scheme p-n heterojunctions, which could avoid the deactivation of the monomeric material due to agglomeration, extend the optical response range, and separate the photogenerated electronhole pairs. The degradation efficiency of mixed pollutants after a 70 min reaction was significantly higher than that of monomeric TC and Cr(VI). Among them, a 70% WO₃/CoO heterojunction had the best photocatalytic degradation effect on the mixture of TC and Cr(VI) pollutants, and the removing rate was 95.35% and 70.2%, respectively. Meanwhile, after five cycles, the removal rate of the mixed pollutants by the 70% WO₃/CoO remained almost unchanged, indicating that the Z-scheme WO₃/CoO p-n heterojunction has good stability. In addition, for an active component capture experiment, ESR and LC-MS were employed to reveal the possible Z-scheme pathway under the built-in electric field of the p-n heterojunction and photocatalytic removing mechanism of TC and Cr(VI). These results offer a promising idea for the treatment of the combined pollution of antibiotics and heavy metals by a Z-scheme WO₃/CoO p-n heterojunction photocatalyst, and have broad application prospects: boosted tetracycline and Cr(VI) simultaneous cleanup over a Z-scheme WO₃/CoO p-n heterojunction with a 0D/3D structure under visible light.

Study on phosphate removal from aqueous solutions using magnesium-ammonium- and zirconium-modified zeolites: equilibrium, kinetic, and fixed-bed column study

Eutrophication is an environmental issue which occurs when the environment becomes enriched with nutrients. Phosphorus (P) is a key nutrient limiting the phytoplankton and algal growth in many aquatic environments. Therefore, P removal could be a promising technique to control the eutrophication. Herein, a natural zeolite (NZ) was modified by two practical techniques, including zirconium (ZrMZ) and magnesium-ammonium modification (MNZ), and employed for phosphate removal. Batch, equilibrium, and column experiments were conducted to determine various adsorption parameters. Equilibrium data were fitted to two different isotherms and Freundlich isotherm provided the best fit which confirms multi-layer adsorption of phosphate ions on the adsorbents. The kinetic experiments demonstrated that the adsorption process is fast with more than 80% of phosphate adsorbed in the first 4 h, and a subsequent equilibrium was established after 16 h. The kinetic data were well described by pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that chemisorption is the mechanism of sorption. Intraparticle diffusion showed a rate-limiting step for phosphate adsorption on all the adsorbents, especially MNZ and ZrMZ. The fixed-bed column study showed that the phosphate concentration in the outlet (C) of ZrMZ column did not reach the initial concentration (C₀) after passing 250 bed volume (BV), while it reached C₀ after 100 BV when the MNZ was employed. Given the considerable improvement were seen, the results of this study suggest that surface of zeolite can be modified with zirconium (and in a less extent magnesium-ammonium) to enhance adsorption of phosphate from many eutrophic lakes.

Chemical characteristics, leaching, and stability of the ubiquitous tire rubber-derived toxicant 6PPD-quinone

We here report chemical characteristics relevant to the fate and transport of the recently discovered environmental toxicant 6PPD-quinone (2-((4-methylpentan-2-yl)amino)-5-(phenylamino)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione or "6PPDQ"). 6PPDQ is a transformation product of the tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD that is ubiquitous in roadway environments, including atmospheric particulate matter, soils, runoff, and receiving waters, after dispersal from tire rubber use and wear on roadways. The aqueous solubility and octanol-water partitioning coefficient (i.e. log KOW) for 6PPDQ were measured to be 38 ± 10 μg L-1 and 4.30 ± 0.02, respectively. Within the context of analytical measurement and laboratory processing, sorption to various laboratory materials was evaluated, indicating that glass was largely inert but loss of 6PPDQ to other materials was common. Aqueous leaching simulations from tire tread wear particles (TWPs) indicated short term release of ∼5.2 μg 6PPDQ per gram TWP over 6 h under flow-through conditions. Aqueous stability tests observed a slight-to-moderate loss of 6PPDQ over 47 days (26 ± 3% loss) for pH 5, 7 and 9. These measured physicochemical properties suggest that 6PPDQ is generally poorly soluble but fairly stable over short time periods in simple aqueous systems. 6PPDQ can also leach readily from TWPs for subsequent environmental transport, posing high potential for adverse effects in local aquatic environments.

Microplastics as vectors of chemical contaminants and biological agents in freshwater ecosystems: Current knowledge status and future perspectives

Microplastics (MPs) are becoming ubiquitous, and their environmental fate is becoming an issue of concern. Our review aims to synthesize current knowledge status and provide future perspectives regarding the vector effect of MPs for chemical contaminants and biological agents. The evidence in the literature indicates that MPs are a vector for persistent organic pollutants (POPs), metals and pharmaceuticals. Concentrations of chemical contaminant in orders of six-fold higher on MPs surfaces than in the surrounding environmental waters have been reported. Chemical pollutants such as perfluoroalkyl substances (PAFSs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), exhibiting polarities in the range of 3.3-9 are the commonest chemicals reported on MP surfaces. Regarding metals on MPs including chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), the presence of C-O and N-H in MPs promote a relatively high adsorption of these metals onto MP surfaces. Regarding pharmaceuticals, not much has been done, but a few studies indicate that commonly used drugs such as ibuprofen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen have been associated with MPs. There is sufficient evidence supporting the claim that MPs can act as vectors for viruses, bacterial and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes, and MPs act to accelerate horizontal and vertical gene transfer. An area that deserves urgent attention is whether MPs can act as vectors for invertebrates and vertebrates, mainly non-native, invasive freshwater species. Despite the ecological significance of invasive biology, little research has been done in this regard. Overall, our review summarises the state of the current knowledge, identifies critical research gaps and provides perspectives for future research.

Integrated assessment of land-to-river Cd fluxes and riverine Cd loads using SWAT-HM to guide management strategies

In 2011, China invested US$9.8 billion to combat the severe heavy metal pollution in the Xiang River basin (XRB), aiming to reduce 50% of the 2008 industrial metal emissions by 2015. However, river pollution mitigation requires a holistic accounting of both point and diffuse sources, yet the detailed land-to-river metal fluxes in the XRB remain unclear. Here, by combining emissions inventories with the SWAT-HM model, we quantified the land-to-river cadmium (Cd) fluxes and riverine Cd loads across the XRB from 2000 to 2015. The model was validated against long-term historical observations of monthly streamflow and sediment load and Cd concentrations at 42, 11, and 10 gauges, respectively. The analysis of the simulation results showed that the soil erosion flux dominated the Cd exports (23.56-80.14 Mg yr^-1). The industrial point flux decreased by 85.5% from 20.84 Mg in 2000 to 3.02 Mg in 2015. Of all the Cd inputs, approximately 54.9% (37.40 Mg yr^-1) was finally drained into Dongting Lake; the remaining 45.1% (30.79 Mg yr^-1) was deposited within the XRB, increasing the Cd concentration in riverbed sediment. Furthermore, in XRB's 5-order river network, the Cd concentrations in small streams (1st order and 2nd order) showed larger variability due to their low dilution capacity and intense Cd inputs. Our findings highlight the need for multi-path transport modeling to guide future management strategies and better monitoring schemes to restore the small polluted streams.

Untreated Opuntia ficus indica for the Efficient Adsorption of Ni(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) Ions from Water

The raw cladode of Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) was evaluated as a sustainable biosorbent for the removal of heavy metals (Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cd) from aqueous solutions. The functional groups of OFI were identified by employing DRIFT-FTIR and CP-MAS-NMR techniques before and after contact with the ions in an aqueous media, showing a rearrangement of the biomass structure due to the complexation between the metal and the functional groups. The adsorption process was studied in both single- and multi-component systems under batch conditions at different pHs (4.0, 5.0, and 6.0), different metal concentrations, and different biomass amounts. The results show that the raw OFI had a removal capacity at room temperature of over 80% for all metals studied after only 30 min of contact time, indicating a rapid adsorption process. Biosorption kinetics were successfully fitted by the pseudo-second-order equation, while Freundlich correctly modelled the biosorption data at equilibrium. The results of this work highlight the potential use of the untreated cladode of OFI as an economical and environmentally friendly biosorbent for the removal of heavy metals from the contaminated aqueous solution.

Amino-Functionalized Hierarchical Porous Carbon Derived from Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Sensing of Heavy Metals in Water

Electrochemical sensing provides a feasible avenue to monitor heavy metal ions (HMIs) in water, whereas the construction of highly sensitive and selective sensors remains challenging. Herein, we fabricated a novel amino-functionalized hierarchical porous carbon by the template-engaged method using ZIF-8 as the precursor and polystyrene sphere as the template, followed by carbonization and controllable chemical grafting of amino groups for efficient electrochemical detection of HMIs in water. The amino-functionalized hierarchical porous carbon features an ultrathin carbon framework with a high graphitization degree, excellent conductivity, unique macro-, meso-, and microporous architecture, and rich amino groups. As a result, the sensor exhibits prominent electrochemical performance with significantly low limits of detection for individual HMIs (i.e., 0.93 nM for Pb²⁺, 2.9 nM for Cu²⁺, and 1.2 nM for Hg²⁺) and simultaneous detection of HMIs (i.e., 0.62 nM for Pb²⁺, 1.8 nM for Cu²⁺, and 0.85 nM for Hg²⁺), which are superior to most reported sensors in the literature. Moreover, the sensor displays excellent anti-interference ability, repeatability, and stability for HMI detection in actual water samples.

Recent Progress of Three-dimensionally Ordered Macroporous (3DOM) Materials in Photocatalytic Applications: A Review

In recent years, three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) materials have attracted tremendous interest in the field of photocatalysis due to the periodic spatial structure and unique physicochemical properties of 3DOM catalysts. In this review, the fundamentals and principles of 3DOM photocatalysts are briefly introduced, including the overview of 3DOM materials, the photocatalytic principles based on 3DOM materials, and the advantages of 3DOM materials in photocatalysis. The preparation methods of 3DOM materials are also presented. The structure and properties of 3DOM materials and their effects on photocatalytic performance are briefly summarized. More importantly, 3DOM materials, as a supported catalyst, are extensively employed to combine with various common materials, including metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, metal sulfides, and carbon materials, to enhance photocatalytic performance. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the development of 3DOM materials in the field of photocatalysis are presented.

Exceptional Sorption of Heavy Metals from Natural Water by Halloysite Particles: A New Prospect of Highly Efficient Water Remediation

Halloysite particles, with their unique multilayer nanostructure, are demonstrated here as highly efficient and readily available sorbent of heavy metals that can be easily scaled up and used in large-scale water remediation facilities. The various methods of raw material purification were applied, and their effects were verified using techniques such as BET isotherm (determination of specific surface area and size of pores), XRF analysis (composition), and SEM imaging (determination of morphology). A series of adsorption experiments for aqueous solutions of metal ions (i.e., lead, cadmium) were carried out to quantify the sorption capacity of halloysite particles for selected heavy metals. The ability of adequately activated halloysite to efficiently remove heavy metal ions from water solutions was confirmed. The value of the zeta potential of raw and purified halloysite particles in water was determined. This enables us to understand its importance for the sorption of positively charged ions (metal, organics) at various pH values. The adsorption process conducted in the pH range of 6.0-6.5 showed significant improvement compared to the acidic conditions (pH value 3.0-3.5) and resulted in a high sorption capacity of lead ions-above 24.3 mg/g for the sulphuric acid-treated sample. The atomic scale ab initio calculations revealed a significant difference in adsorption energy between the external siloxane surface and cross-sectional interlayer surface, resulting in pronounced adsorption anisotropy. A low energy barrier was calculated for the interlayer migration of heavy metals into the halloysite interior, facilitating access to the active sites in these regions, thus significantly increasing the sorption capacity and kinetics. DFT (density functional theory) calculations supporting this study allowed for predicting the sorption potential of pure halloysite structure towards heavy metals. To confront it with experimental results, it was crucial to determine proper purification conditions to obtain such a developed structure from the mineral ore. The results show a massive increase in the BET area and confirm a high sorption potential of modified halloysite towards heavy metals.

Agarose Film-Based Liquid–Solid Conversion for Heavy Metal Detection of Water Samples by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) shows promising applications in the analysis of environmental heavy metals. However, direct analysis in water by LIBS faces the problems of droplet splashing and laser energy decay. In this study, a novel liquid–solid conversion method based on agarose films is proposed to provide an easy-to-operate and sensitive detection of heavy metals. First, the water samples were converted into semi-solid hydrogels with the aid of agarose and then dried into agarose films to make the signal intensities stronger. The calibration curves of Cd, Pb and Cr were constructed. The proposed method was validated by standard heavy metal solutions and real water samples. The results showed that the values of R2 were 0.990, 0.989 and 0.975, and the values of the LOD were 0.011, 0.122 and 0.118 mg L−1 for Cd (I) 228.80, Pb (I) 405.78 and Cr (I) 427.48 nm, respectively. The RMSEs of validation were 0.068 (Cd), 0.107 (Pb) and 0.112 mg·L−1 (Cr), and the recovery values were in the range of 91.2–107.9%. The agarose film-based liquid–solid conversion method achieved the desired ease of operation and sensitivity of LIBS in heavy-metal detection, thereby, showing good application prospects in heavy metal monitoring of water.

Arsenic and iron bioavailability in Caco-2 cells: The influence of their co-existence and concentration

Arsenic (As) exposure in humans is primarily caused through food and drinking water. Iron (Fe) is one of the most common element of the human and can influence the toxicity and bioavailability of As. However, information on the interaction between As and Fe when present together is limited. In this study, the interaction effects of Fe(III) (0, 3, and 10 mg/L) and As (As(III) at 0, 0.05, 0.1 mg/L, and As(V) at 0, 0.1, and 2 mg/L, respectively) on their absorption and bioavailability in Caco-2 cells were analyzed. As(III) absorption significantly decreased with the addition of Fe, while Fe absorption significantly increased. Compared with 0.1 mg/L As(III) addition alone, 3 and 10 mg/L Fe(III) addition significantly reduced the As(III) absorption by 8.6 and 11 μg/L, respectively. The absorption of As and Fe(III) and the bioavailability of Fe(III) significantly increased with the addition of As(III/V). Compared with 10 mg/L Fe(III) alone, the absorption of As(III) was significantly increased by 1 and 1.3 mg/L with 0.05 and 0.1 mg/L As(III) addition, respectively. Furthermore, the absorption and bioavailability of Fe(III) were significantly increased by 1.2 mg/L and 8% and 1.2 mg/L and 8.2%, respectively, after adding 0.1 and 2 mg/L As(V).

Toxic heavy metal/oxyanion tolerance in haloarchaea from some saline and hypersaline ecosystems

Toxic heavy metal/oxyanion contamination has increased severely through the last decades. In this study, 169 native haloarchaeal strains were isolated from different saline and hypersaline econiches of Iran. After providing pure culture and performing morphological, physiological, and biochemical tests, haloarchaea resistance toward arsenate, selenite, chromate, cadmium, zinc, lead, copper, and mercury were surveyed using an agar dilution method. On the basis of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), the least toxicities were found with selenite and arsenate, while the haloarchaeal strains revealed the highest sensitivity for mercury. On the other hand, the majority of haloarchaeal strains exhibited similar responses to chromate and zinc, whereas the resistance level of the isolates to lead, cadmium, and copper was very heterogeneous. 16 S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence analysis revealed that most haloarchaeal strains belong to the Halorubrum and Natrinema genera. The obtained results from this study showed that among the identified isolates, Halococcus morrhuae strain 498 had an exceptional resistance toward selenite and cadmium (64 and 16 mM, respectively). Also, Halovarius luteus strain DA5 exhibited a remarkable tolerance against copper (32 mM). Moreover, strain Salt5, identified as Haloarcula sp., was the only strain that could tolerate all eight tested heavy metals/oxyanions and had a significant tolerance of mercury (1.5 mM).

Mixed heavy metal stress induces global iron starvation response

Multiple heavy metal contamination is an increasingly common global problem. Heavy metals have the potential to disrupt microbially mediated biogeochemical cycling. However, systems-level studies on the effects of combinations of heavy metals on bacteria are lacking. For this study, we focused on the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR; Oak Ridge, TN, USA) subsurface which is contaminated with several heavy metals and high concentrations of nitrate. Using a native Bacillus cereus isolate that represents a dominant species at this site, we assessed the combined impact of eight metal contaminants, all at site-relevant concentrations, on cell processes through an integrated multi-omics approach that included discovery proteomics, targeted metabolomics, and targeted gene-expression profiling. The combination of eight metals impacted cell physiology in a manner that could not have been predicted from summing phenotypic responses to the individual metals. Exposure to the metal mixture elicited a global iron starvation response not observed during individual metal exposures. This disruption of iron homeostasis resulted in decreased activity of the iron-cofactor-containing nitrate and nitrite reductases, both of which are important in biological nitrate removal at the site. We propose that the combinatorial effects of simultaneous exposure to multiple heavy metals is an underappreciated yet significant form of cell stress in the environment with the potential to disrupt global nutrient cycles and to impede bioremediation efforts at mixed waste sites. Our work underscores the need to shift from single- to multi-metal studies for assessing and predicting the impacts of complex contaminants on microbial systems.

Investigation of potential anthropogenic pollution of rare metals in Tama River followed by establishment of a comprehensive multielement analysis of major-to-ultratrace elements in river water and sewage treatment effluent

In this study, comprehensive multi-element analysis of at least 53 elements, including 40 rare metals, in river water at all points from upstream to the estuary in urban rivers and sewage treatment effluent was established using three analytical methods of ICP-MS, chelating solid-phase extraction (SPE)/ICP-MS, and reflux-type heating acid decomposition/chelating SPE/ICP-MS. Recoveries of some elements for sewage treatment effluent in chelating SPE were improved by being combined with reflux-type heating acid decomposition, because organic substances, such as EDTA, in sewage treatment effluent could be effectively decomposed. In particular, the reflux-type heating acid decomposition/chelating SPE/ICP-MS method enabled the determination of Co, In, Eu, Pr, Sm, Tb, and Tm, which had been difficult to determine in chelating SPE/ICP-MS without this decomposition procedure. A potential anthropogenic pollution (PAP) of rare metals in Tama River was investigated by the established analytical methods. As a result, 25 elements in river water samples from the inflow area of sewage treatment effluent were several to several dozen times higher than those in the clean area. In particular, the concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Ge, Rb, Mo, Cs, Gd, and Pt increased by more than one order of magnitude compared to the river water from clean area. These elements were suggested to be PAP. The concentrations of Gd in the effluents from five sewage treatment plants ranged from 60 to 120 ng L^-1, 40 to 80 times higher than those in clean river water, and all sewage treatment plants effluents showed the definite elevation of Gd concentrations. This indicates that MRI contrast agent leakage is occurring in all sewage treatment effluents. In addition, concentrations of 16 rare metal elements (Li, B, Ti, Cr, Mn, Ni, Ga, Ge, Se, Rb, Mo, In, Cs, Ba, W, and Pt) in all sewage treatment effluents were higher than those in clean river water, suggesting that many rare metal elements may be PAP. In the river water after the merging of sewage treatment effluent, the concentrations of Gd and In were higher than the reported values about 20 years ago.

The Effects of Heavy Metal Pollution on Collembola in Urban Soils and Associated Recovery Using Biochar Remediation: A Review

Heavy metal pollution in urban soil continues to be a global issue that poses a serious hazard to invertebrates and human lives through oral ingestion and inhalation of soil particles. Though the toxicity of several heavy metals on invertebrates like Collembola has been studied, lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) have been extensively studied due to their high toxicity to collembolans. As a ubiquitous soil organism all over the world, collembolans have been used as a model species to study the effects of heavy metals on invertebrate communities. To reduce the effects of heavy metals on ecosystem functions, biotic and abiotic measures have been used for heavy metal remediation; biochar seems to be the most effective approach that not only increases the physical absorption of heavy metals but also indirectly benefits soil organisms. In this study, we briefly reviewed the application of biochar in Pb and Cd polluted soil and showed its potential in soil remediation. Furthermore, we outlined the potentially toxic effects of Pb- and Cd-polluted urban soil on the collembolan species. We searched peer-reviewed publications that investigated: (1) the level of Pb and Cd contamination on urban soil in different cities around the world; and (2) the different sources of Pb and Cd as well as factors influencing their toxicity to collembolan communities. The obtained information offers new perspectives on the interactions and effects between collembolans, Pb, and Cd, and their remediation in urban soils.

Removing Mn, Cu and Fe from Real Wastewaters with Macrophytes: Reviewing the Relationship between Environmental Factors and Plants' Uptake Capacity

Heavy metal pollution creates environmental health concerns. Among these, iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) are commonly found in aquatic environments due to the release of wastewaters. Phytoremediation in hydroponics uses macrophytes to treat contaminated environments, and this is influenced by environmental factors. However, the relationship between these factors and the removal of Fe, Cu and Mn by macrophytes is not known. Therefore, a meta-analysis serves to determine the correlations between environmental factors and the removal of these metals in real wastewater by macrophytes, as well as to identify the role of different aquatic forms of macrophytes in phytoremediation. Emergent macrophytes had higher concentrations of manganese in their tissues, and higher bioconcentrations factor of iron and manganese than floating plants. Regardless of the biotope, higher concentrations of Fe and Cu decreased the ability of plants to bioconcentrate them. The correlations among exposure time, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, photoperiod and metal phytoremediation by plants were also found. It can be concluded that the emergent macrophytes showed better performance in terms of the removal of Fe, Cu and Mn, and that the significant correlations between environmental factors and removal vary with the type of metal and the environmental factor analyzed.

The contents of essential and toxic metals in coffee beans and soil in Dale Woreda, Sidama Regional State, Southern Ethiopia

Background

For developing countries such as Ethiopia, coffee is a commodity of great economic, social, and environmental importance. No detailed investigations have been performed on the contents of essential and toxic metals in coffee beans and soil in this study area.

Methods

The levels of essential metals (Na, K, Ca, Zn, Mn, Cu, Co, Cr, Ni) and toxic elements (Pb and Cd) were investigated in coffee beans (coffee growing farmland and coffee washed plants) and soil samples (from farmland) using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and flame emission atomic spectroscopy. We selected six (20%) administrative units (kebele) with purposive sampling techniques based on their coffee production capacity in Dale Woreda for soil testing. After coffee sample preparation in a microwave system with HNO₃and H₂O₂ reagents, the accuracy of the optimized procedure was evaluated by analysing the digest of the spiked samples. Soil samples were abridged with a slight revision of the EPA 3050B acid digesting method. ANOVA was used to determine the significant differences in the mean concentration of metal within coffee beans from farmland at the various sampled sites at the p < 0.05 significance level. To correlate the effect of one metal concentration on other metals in the coffee bean samples, Pearson correlation matrices were used.

Results

Calcium had the highest concentration (1,355 ± 18.02 mg kg^-1) of macroelements in soil samples, followed by K (681.43 ± 1.52 mg kg^-1). Similarly, Na (111.63 ± 0.35 mg kg^-1), Cu (49.96 ± 0.99 mg kg^-1), Co (5.43 ± 0.31 mg kg^-1), Mn (0.62 ± 0.238 mg kg^-1), Ni (0.194 ± 0.01 mg kg^-1), and Zn (0.163 ± 0.007 mg kg^-1) were detected among the microelements in the soil samples. Pb and Cr were not detected in all soil samples. Potassium (K) was found to have the highest concentration (99.93 ± 0.037 mg kg^-1), followed by Ca (17.23 ± 0.36 mg kg^-1), among the macroelements in coffee beans from farmers' farms. Similar to coffee beans from farmland, samples from washed plants also contained the highest K (77.93 ± 0.115 mg kg^-1), followed by Ca (4.33 ± 0.035 mg kg^-1). Metal levels in coffee bean samples from farmland are in the following order: K>Na>Ca >Mn>Cu> Ni>Zn. Metal levels were found to be K>Na>Ca >Mn>Cu> Zn>Ni in coffee beans from the washed plants. Co, Cr, Pb and Cd were no detected in all coffee bean samples. Except for calcium, potassium and manganese, the levels of metals in coffee beans from farmland and washed plants were not significantly different at the 95% confidence level within a kebele.

Conclusions

We observed permitted levels of macro- and trace elements in coffee beans from farmlands and washed plants. Only in the soil samples are cadmium concentrations higher than those permitted for agricultural soil recommended by the WHO and FAO. Overall, there is no health danger linked with the use of coffee beans due to detrimental and trace heavy metals.

Immobilization of Cd2+ and Pb2+ by biomineralization of the carbonate mineralized bacterial consortium JZ1

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has been proven to effectively immobilize Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ using a single bacterium. However, there is an urgent need for studies of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ immobilized by a bacterial consortium. In this study, a stable consortium designated JZ1 was isolated from soil that was contaminated with cadmium and lead, and the dominant genus Sporosarcina (99.1%) was found to have carbonate mineralization function. The results showed that 91.52% and 99.38% of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ were mineralized by the consortium JZ1 with 5 g/L CaCl₂ at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L Cd²⁺ and 150 mg/L Pb²⁺, respectively. The bioprecipitates were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Moreover, the kinetic studies indicated that the urea hydrolysis reaction fit well with the Michaelis-Menten equation, and the kinetic parameters K_m and V_max were estimated to be 38.69 mM and 58.98 mM/h, respectively. When the concentration of urea increased from 0.1 to 0.3 M, the mineralization rate increased by 1.58-fold. This study can provide a novel microbial resource for the biomineralization of Cd and Pb in soil and water environments.

Activated sludge process enabling highly efficient removal of heavy metal in wastewater

Activated sludge process was a low-cost alternative method compared to the conventional physicochemical process for the treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater. In the present study, the removal efficiency of Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Ni²⁺ from wastewater by a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge system was investigated, and the mechanism was revealed by static adsorption experiment of activated sludge. The results showed that the activated sludge in the SBR system was effective in removing Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ from wastewater at 10 mg·L^-1 initial concentration, with a removal efficiency of 83.1 ~ 90.0% for Pb²⁺ and 74.3 ~ 80.6% for Cu²⁺, respectively. However, the removal efficiency for Ni²⁺ was only 0 ~ 6.2%. Static adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of activated sludge for three heavy metals was shown as Pb²⁺  > Cu²⁺  > Ni²⁺. When the initial concentration was 20 mg·L^-1, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of activated sludge for Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Ni²⁺ was 18.35 mg·g^-1, 17.06 mg·g^-1, and 8.37 mg·g^-1, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms for Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ were ligand exchange, electrostatic adsorption, and surface organic complexation processes, but Ni²⁺ removal mechanism mainly included electrostatic adsorption and surface organic complexation processes, showing that Ni²⁺ removal was inhibited in the presence of Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺. The physicochemical properties and microbial diversity of activated sludge were greatly affected by the heavy metals in the SBR system, and genus Rhodobacter was found to be dominant bacteria enabling resistance to heavy metal ions.

Enhanced elimination of Cr(VI) from aqueous media by polyethyleneimine modified corn straw biochar supported sulfide nanoscale zero valent iron: Performance and mechanism

A novel polyethyleneimine modified corn straw biochar supported sulfide nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI@PBC) was developed to enhance Cr(VI) removal from aqueous media. The characteristics of morphology, chemical composition, and functional groups of S-nZVI@PBC, as well as its kinetics and mechanism for Cr(VI) removal were explored. Characterization verified S-nZVI was successfully loaded onto PEI modified biochar. The adsorption process was well represented pseudo-second-order model (R² = 0.990) and Langmuir isotherm model (R² = 0.962), indicating it was a monolayer chemical adsorption process. The Cr(VI) removal was affected by pH and achieved the maximum when pH = 3.0, which may be ascribed to the better corrosion of nZVI and release of Fe(II) from the S-nZVI@PBC in acidic condition. The primary mechanisms were adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation. S-nZVI@PBC exhibited higher stability and reusability than nZVI, which makes it more promising in environmental application. Overall, S-nZVI@PBC is of great potential for treating Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Valorization of Sargassum Biomass as Potential Material for the Remediation of Heavy-Metals-Contaminated Waters

Sargassum algae has become a major environmental issue due to its abundance in the Pacific Ocean with hundreds of tons reaching the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean every year. This generates large quantities of decomposing organic matter that have a negative impact on the region's economy and ecosystems. Sargassum valorization has turned out to be a fundamental aspect to mitigate its environmental impact. This study proposes the use and application of untreated Sargassum biomass for the decontamination of waters polluted with lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) through single and binary adsorption tests. Physicochemical and textural properties examined by SEM, XRD, and FT-IR elucidated that Sargassum biomass is viable to be used as a potential environmental benign adsorbent, exhibiting Cd(II) and Pb(II) adsorption capacities as high as 240 mg g-1 and 350 mg g-1, respectively, outperforming conventionally used adsorbents. This is attributed to its morphology, favorable surface charge distribution, and the presence of -OH and -COH groups. A strong affinity between the biomass and metal pollutants was evidenced by a thermodynamics study, showing a spontaneous and endothermic process. This work sets a practical route for the utilization of the Sargassum biomass, demonstrating its applicability as a potential material for heavy-metal-polluted water remediation, making a substantial contribution to a circular economy system.

Covalently Functionalized Cellulose Nanoparticles for Simultaneous Enrichment of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) Ions

Cellulose nanoparticles are sustainable natural polymers with excellent application in environmental remediation technology. In this work, we synthesized cellulose nanoparticles and covalently functionalized them with a multi-functional group possessing ligands. The hybrid material shows excellent adsorption properties for the simultaneous extraction of multiple metal ions in the sample preparation technique. The sorbent shows excellent sorption capacity in the range of 1.8-2.2 mmol/g of material. The developed method was successfully employed for the simultaneous extraction of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) from real-world samples (industrial effluent, river water, tap and groundwater) and subsequently determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The method shows a preconcentration limit of 0.7 ppb attributes to analyze the trace concentration of studied metal ions. The detection limit obtained for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) is found to be 0.4 ppb.
