Assessment of phytotoxicity grade during composting based on EEM/PARAFAC combined with projection pursuit regression

Plant-Derived Waste as a Component of Growing Media: Manifestations, Assessments, and Sources of Their Phytotoxicity

Every year, approximately 2 billion tons of plant-derived waste (such as straw and crop residues) are generated globally, most of which are either incinerated, dumped, or landfilled without proper planning, leading to severe environmental pollution and resource wastage. Plant-derived waste exhibits potential advantages as a growing media component in various aspects. However, numerous studies have also indicated that plant-derived waste generally possesses strong phytotoxicity, which must be removed or reduced before being utilized as a growing media component. Therefore, accurately assessing their phytotoxicity and appropriately modifying it to ensure their support for plant growth when used as a growing media component is crucial. This paper reviews the manifestation and assessment methods of phytotoxicity in plant-derived waste; systematically summarizes the phytotoxicity sources of three common types of plant-derived waste (garden waste, crop straw, and spent mushroom substrate), as well as the toxic mechanisms of two representative phytotoxic substances (phenolic compounds and organic acids); and proposes some insights into further research directions. By consolidating insights from these studies, this review aims to deepen our understanding of phytotoxicity and its implications, and offer valuable references and guidance for future research endeavors and practical applications.

Exploring the dynamics of antibiotic resistome on plastic debris traveling from the river to the sea along a representative estuary based on field sequential transfer incubations

The environmental risks arising from ubiquitous microplastics or plastic debris (PD) acting as carriers of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have attracted widespread attention. Enormous amounts of plastic waste are transported by rivers and traverse estuaries into the sea every year. However, changes in the antibiotic resistome within the plastisphere (the biofilms formed on PD) as PD travels through estuaries are largely unknown. In this study, we performed sequential migration incubations for PD along Haihe Estuary to simulate the natural process of PD floating from rivers to the ocean. Metagenomic sequencing and analysis techniques were used to track microbial communities and antibiotic resistome on migrating PD and in seawater representing the marine environment. The total relative gene copies of ARGs on traveling PD remained stable. As migration between greatly varied waters, additional ARG subtypes were recruited to the plastisphere. Above 80 % ARG subtypes identified in the plastisphere were persistent throughout the migration, and over 30 % of these persistent ARGs were undetected in seawater. The bacterial hosts composition of ARGs on PD progressively altered as transported downstream. Human pathogenic bacteria carrying ARGs (HPBs-ARG) exhibited decreasing trends in abundance and species number during transfer. Individual HPBs-ARG persisted on transferred PD and were absent in seawater samples, comprising Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Based on all detected ARGs and HPBs-ARG, the Projection Pursuit model was applied to synthetically evaluate the potential risks of antibiotic resistance on migrating PD. Diminished risks on PD were observed upon the river-to-sea journey but consistently remained significantly higher than in seawater. The potential risks posed to marine environments by drifting PD as dispersal vectors for antibiotic resistance deserve greater attention. Our results provide initial insights into the dynamics or stability of antibiotic resistome on PD crossing distinct aquatic systems in field estuaries.

Molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter in manganese ore-mediated constructed wetlands for fresh leachate treatment

The organic matter (OM) and nitrogen in Fresh leachate (FL) from waste compression sites pose environmental and health risks. Even though the constructed wetland (CW) can efficiently remove these pollutants, the molecular-level transformations of dissolved OM (DOM) in FL remain uncertain. This study reports the molecular dynamics of DOM and nitrogen removal during FL treatment in CWs. Two lab-scale vertical-flow CW systems were employed: one using only sand as substrates (act as a control, CW-C) and the other employing an equal mixture of manganese ore powder and sand (experimental, CW-M). Over 488 days of operation, CW-M exhibited significantly higher removal rates for chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and dissolved organic matter (represented by dissolved organic carbon, DOC) at 98.2 ± 2.5%, 99.2 ± 1.4%, and 97.9 ± 1.9%, respectively, in contrast to CW-C (92.8 ± 6.8%, 77.1 ± 28.1%, and 74.7 ± 9.5%). The three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analyses unveiled that the influent DOM was predominantly composed of readily biodegradable protein-like substances with high carbon content and low unsaturation. Throughout treatment, it led to the degradation of low O/C and high H/C compounds, resulting in the formation of DOM with higher unsaturation and aromaticity, resembling humic-like substances. CW-M showcased a distinct DOM composition, characterized by lower carbon content yet higher unsaturation and aromaticity than CW-C. The study also identified the presence of Gammaproteobacteria, reported as Mn-oxidizing bacteria with significantly higher abundance in the upper and middle layers of CW-M, facilitating manganese cycling and improving DOM removal. Key pathways contributing to DOM removal encompassed adsorption, catalytic oxidation by manganese oxides, and microbial degradation. This study offers novel insights into DOM transformation and removal from FL during CW treatment, which will facilitate better design and enhanced performance.

Investigating fungal community characteristics in co-composted cotton stalk and various livestock manure products

Agricultural wastes, comprising cotton straw and livestock manure, can be effectively managed through aerobic co-composting. Nevertheless, the quality and microbial characteristics of co-composting products from different sources remain unclear. Therefore, this study utilized livestock manure from various sources in Xinjiang, China, including herbivorous sheep manure (G), omnivorous pigeon manure (Y), and pigeon-sheep mixture (GY) alongside cotton stalks, for a 40-day co-composting process. We monitored physicochemical changes, assessed compost characteristics, and investigated fungal community. The results indicate that all three composts met established composting criteria, with compost G exhibiting the fastest microbial growth and achieving the highest quality. Ascomycota emerged as the predominant taxon in three compost products. Remarkably, at the genus level, the biomarker species for G, Y, and GY are Petromyces and Cordyceps, Neurospora, and Neosartorya, respectively. Microorganisms play a pivotal role in organic matter degradation, impacting nutrient composition, demonstrating significant potential for the decomposition and transformation of compost components. Redundancy analysis indicates that potassium, total organic carbon, and C:N are key factors influencing fungal communities. This study elucidates organic matter degradation in co-composting straw and livestock manure diverse sources, optimizing treatment for efficient agricultural waste utilization and sustainable practices.

The promotion of the atrazine degradation mechanism by humic acid in a soil microbial electrochemical system

The enhancing effects of anodes on the degradation of the organochlorine pesticide atrazine (ATR) in soil within microbial electrochemical systems (MES) have been extensively researched. However, the impact and underlying mechanisms of soil microbial electrochemical systems (MES) on ATR degradation, particularly under conditions involving the addition of humic acids (HAs), remain elusive. In this investigation, a soil MES supplemented with humic acids (HAs) was established to assess the promotional effects and mechanisms of HAs on ATR degradation, utilizing EEM-PARAFAC and SEM analyses. Results revealed that the maximum power density of the MES in soil increased by 150%, and the degradation efficiency of ATR improved by over 50% following the addition of HAs. Furthermore, HAs were found to facilitate efficient ATR degradation in the far-anode region by mediating extracellular electron transfer. The components identified as critical in promoting ATR degradation were Like-Protein and Like-Humic acid substances. Analysis of the microbial community structure indicated that the addition of HAs favored the evolution of the soil MES microbial community and the enrichment of electroactive microorganisms. In the ATR degradation process, the swift accumulation of Hydrocarbyl ATR (HYA) was identified as the primary cause for the rapid degradation of ATR in electron-rich conditions. Essentially, HA facilitates the reduction of ATR to HYA through mediated bonded electron transfer, thereby markedly enhancing the efficiency of ATR degradation.

Valorization of kiwi waste through composting

Kiwi waste from the calibration process is a major environmental problem of kiwi production due to landfill deposition. This work aims to contribute to the agronomic use of recycled kiwi waste through composting. With this objective, a composting experiment was carried out with kiwi fruit waste mixed with 5%, 10% and 20% (fresh weight) of wheat straw from bundles used to protect kiwifruit trunks from frost, as abulking agent to increase aeration, in the piles 5S, 10S and 20S, respectively. The highest temperatures for piles 5S and 10S were above 60°C, whereas the temperature did not reach 40°C in the pile with the highest straw content (20S) because the aeration increased heat loss in addition to increased C/N ratio of this pile. Also, the amount of organic matter mineralized decreased with increasing amount of straw because of the high C/N ratio of the straw. The highest total N (29.7 g kg-1) and the lowest C/N ratio (13) of the compost with 5% of straw is important from the agricultural point of view to promote N availability. In contrast, the high electrical conductivity (4.6 dS m-1) of this compost increases the risk of salt accumulation in the soil. Our results show that the compost with 10% straw, with high degree of maturation, absence of poor hygiene indicators as coliforms and pathogens as Salmonella sp., high organic matter content and rich in nutrients, together with the adequate compost pH and low electrical conductivity improves compost quality.

Inoculating functional bacteria improved the humification process by regulating microbial networks and key genera in straw composting by adding different nitrogen sources

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of functional inoculant and different nitrogen sources on the relationship among lignocellulose, precursors, and humus as well as their interactions with bacterial genera in straw composting. Results showed that inoculation improved the heating process and retained more nitrate compared to control. Inoculation increased the degradation of lignocellulosic components by 26.9%-81.6% and the formation of humus by 15.7%-23.0%. Bioinformatics analysis showed that inoculation enriched key genera Chryseolinea in complex nitrogen source (pig manure) compost and Pusillimas, Luteimonas, and Flavobacteria in single nitrogen source (urea) compost, which were related to humus formation. Network analysis found that inoculation and urea addition improved the microbial synergistic effect and inoculation combined with pig manure had more complex modularity and interactions. Combining the functional bacterial inoculant with urea helped to enhance the degradation of lignocellulose and humification process during straw composting especially with single nitrogen source.

Relationships between arsenic biotransformation genes, antibiotic resistance genes, and microbial function under different arsenic stresses during composting

Although the arsenic contamination and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during composting have been studied separately, there is limited information on their interactions, particularly, the relationship between arsenic biotransformation genes (ABGs) and ARGs. Therefore, the present study used different forms of arsenic stress (organic and inorganic arsenic at 10 and 50 mg/kg) in pig manure and straw co-composting, to evaluate the effects of arsenic stress on microbial community structures, metabolic function, ABGs, and ARGs. The results showed that arsenic stress had different effects on different parameters and promoted the microbial formation of humic acid and the biodegradation of fulvic acid. Inorganic arsenic showed more rapid effects on microbial community structure, visible within about 20 days, while the effects of organic arsenic were later (about 45 days) due to the necessity of transformation. Moreover, the addition of organic roxarsone and inorganic arsenic resulted in higher expression of ABGs and ARGs, respectively. Arsenic addition also caused increased expression of genes associated with replication and repair. A significant relationship was observed between ABG and ARG expression, for instance, genes involved in arsenic reduction and oxidation were influenced by genes involved in aminoglycoside and chloramphenicol resistance genes (p < 0.05). These complex interactions among microorganisms, functional genes, and external parameters contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying cross-contamination.

Calculation and analysis of agricultural carbon emission efficiency considering water-energy-food pressure: Modeling and application

Agricultural carbon emission efficiency (ACEE) measurement, a tool for effectively achieving sustainable development goals, has garnered much attention. However, the impacts of resource pressures such as water, energy and food on ACEE have been overlooked, and the high dimensionality of the measurement model and insufficient sample data can easily distort the measurement results. Therefore, from a green development perspective, we established a new ACEE measurement framework considering the water-energy-food pressure index and a new integrated ACEE measurement model (CSMA-PPE-USSBM) that includes chaotic maps, the slime mould algorithm (SMA), projection pursuit evaluation (PPE) and the undesirable super slack-based measure (USSBM). The model was used to calculate ACEE in 13 prefecture-level municipalities in Heilongjiang Province, China, and analyze its spatiotemporal evolution and possible causes. The results showed that this model avoids the above problems. The reliability coefficient and stability coefficient reached 0.962 and 0.971, respectively; ACEE in Heilongjiang Province has much room for improvement, but there are obvious differences in carbon emission efficiency in different carbon emission type regions. The key driving forces of ACEE variation can generate significant scale effects. Provincial driving factors can affect ACEE variation in prefecture municipalities, where the influence range is limited or the influence of driving factors gradually emerges. The research results provide a theoretical reference for accurately measuring the regional ACEE and analyzing the driving mechanism of ACEE and green agricultural development.

The microbial oxidation of pharmaceuticals in an anaerobic aqueous environment: Effect of dissolved organic matter fractions from different sources

Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the biodegradation of trace organic contaminants occurred in the hyporheic zone. However, the role of diverse DOM fractions with distinct physicochemical properties on the biodegradation of pharmaceuticals under reducing conditions is scarcely known. To address this knowledge gap, DOMs derived from road-deposited sediment, soil, and active sludge (namely allochthonous DOM) and algae (namely autochthonous DOM) were collected and isolated into different fractions. Thereafter, the effect of DOM fractions on the anaerobic microbial oxidation of two typical pharmaceuticals, i.e., ritonavir (RTV) and tetracycline (TC) was explored by using simulated anaerobic microcosms. Mechanistic insights into how DOM fractions from different sources influence pharmaceutical biodegradation processes were provided by optical and electrochemical analyses. Results showed that humic acid and fulvic acid fractions from allochthonous DOM could enhance the biodegradation of TC (12.2 % per mgC/L) and RTV (14.5 % per mgC/L), while no significant impact was observed for that of hydrophilic fractions. However, autochthonous DOM promoted the biodegradation of TC (4.17 % per mgC/L) and inhibited that of RTV. Mechanistic analysis showed that the higher of humification and aromatization level of DOM components, the stronger their promotive effect on the biodegradation of TC and RTV. Further, the promotive mechanism could be attributed to the response of quinone moieties in DOM as extracellular electron acceptors that yields more energy to support microbial metabolism. These results provide a more comprehensive understanding of diverse DOM fractions mediating microbial anaerobic oxidation of trace organic pollutants, and extend our insights into contamination control and remediation technologies.

Constrained groupwise additive index models

In environmental epidemiology, there is wide interest in creating and using comprehensive indices that can summarize information from different environmental exposures while retaining strong predictive power on a target health outcome. In this context, the present article proposes a model called the constrained groupwise additive index model (CGAIM) to create easy-to-interpret indices predictive of a response variable, from a potentially large list of variables. The CGAIM considers groups of predictors that naturally belong together to yield meaningful indices. It also allows the addition of linear constraints on both the index weights and the form of their relationship with the response variable to represent prior assumptions or operational requirements. We propose an efficient algorithm to estimate the CGAIM, along with index selection and inference procedures. A simulation study shows that the proposed algorithm has good estimation performances, with low bias and variance and is applicable in complex situations with many correlated predictors. It also demonstrates important sensitivity and specificity in index selection, but non-negligible coverage error on constructed confidence intervals. The CGAIM is then illustrated in the construction of heat indices in a health warning system context. We believe the CGAIM could become useful in a wide variety of situations, such as warning systems establishment, and multipollutant or exposome studies.

Remediation potential of magnetic biochar in lead smelting sites: Insight from the complexation of dissolved organic matter with potentially toxic elements

Magnetic biochar has been widely used in potentially toxic elements (PTEs) polluted soils due to its magnetic separation capability and synchronous immobilization for multiple metals. However, the contribution of magnetic biochar to soil dissolve organic material (SDOM) and its binding behavior with PTEs needs to be further clarified prior to its remediation application on lead smelting sites. In this study, multi-spectral techniques of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and two-dimensional FTIR correlation spectroscopy (2D-FTIR-COS) were used to explore the evolution characteristics of SDOM in the lead smelting site under the remediation of magnetic biochar, and to further analyze its affinity and binding behavior with Pb and As. Results showed that magnetic biochar significantly increased SDOM content and decreased Pb and As available content. EEM and parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) and Self-Organizing map analysis showed that humus-like and aromatic DOM increased and microbial-derived SDOM decreased after magnetic biochar cultivation. Furthermore, 2D-FTIR-COS correlation spectroscopy analysis indicated that BDOM had a stronger binding affinity to Pb, while SDOM has a stronger binding affinity to As. The binding sequences of different DOMs to PTEs varied greatly, the carboxyl and amide groups of SDOM and BDOM showed a remarkable and rapid response. Our results enhance the insights of magnetic biochar on soil function and PTEs remediation potential, providing novel information for its environmental remediation application.

Non-hypothetical projection pursuit regression for the prediction of hydration heat of Portland-cement-based cementitious system

In this study, the non-hypothetical projection pursuit regression (NH-PPR) is proposed. The proposed NH-PPR model can predict the hydration heat based on the four cement phases, FA, SL, cement fineness and hydration time. The NH-PPR model is proposed by using the multiple layer iteration method and the non-hypothetical and non-parametric ridge functions to enhance accuracy and solve the problems caused by the parameter selection and the subjective hypothesis. The modeling data set is applied to train model, the testing data set is regressed and fitted into the model, and then the obtained results are compared with the BP model. To further validate the proposed model, another published data set is used to obtain a higher degree of confidence in the prediction. It is shown that the proposed model obtains the better accuracy, stability and versatility, and avoids the parameter selection and subjective hypothesis.

Impact of different classification schemes on discrimination of proteins with noise-contaminated spectra using laboratory-measured fluorescence data

Biological agents are important to detect and identify with respect to environmental contamination and public health. Noise contamination in fluorescent spectra is one of the contributors to the uncertainties of identification. In order to investigate the noise-tolerant capability provided by laboratory-measured excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra that are used as a database, fluorescence properties of four proteinaceous biotoxin samples and ten harmless protein samples were characterized by EEM fluorescence spectra, and the predicting performance of models trained by laboratory-measured fluorescence data was tested and verified from validation data with noise-contaminated spectra. By means of peak signal of noise (PSNR) as an indicator of noise levels, the potential impact of noise contaminations on the characterization and discrimination of these samples was evaluated quantitatively. Different classification schemes utilizing multivariate analysis techniques of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Random Forest (RF), and Multi-layer Perceptron (MPL) coupled with feature descriptors of differential transform (DT), Fourier transform (FT) and wavelet transform (WT) were conducted under different PSNR values. We systematically analyzed the performance of classification schemes by the case study at 20 PSNR and by statistical analysis from 1-100 PSNR. The results show that the spectral features with EEM-WT decreased the demanding number of input variables while retaining high performances in sample classification. The spectral features with EEM-FT presented the worst performance although having the largest number of features. The distributions of feature importance and contribution were found sensitive to noise contaminations. The classification scheme of PCA prior to MPL with EEM-WT as input presented an improvement in lower PSNR. These results indicate that robust features extracted by corresponding techniques are critical to enhancing the spectral differentiation capabilities among these samples and play an important role in eliminating the noise effect. The study of classification schemes for discriminating protein samples with noise-contaminated spectra presents tremendous potential for future developments in the rapid detection and identification of proteinaceous biotoxins based on three-dimensional fluorescence spectrometry.

Regulating pH and Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation improved the humification and succession of fungal community at the cooling stage of composting

This study aimed to explore the effect of regulating pH and Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation at the cooling stage of composting on the lignocellulose degradation, humification process and related precursors as well as fungal community for secondary fermentation. Results showed that composting with P. chrysosporium inoculation and pH regulation (T4) had 58% cellulose decomposition, 73% lignin degradation and improved enzyme activities for lignin decomposition. There was 81.98% increase of humic substance content and more transformation of polyphenols and amino acids in T4 compared to control. Inoculating P. chrysosporium affected the fungal community diversity, and regulating pH helped to increase the colonization of P. chrysosporium. Network analysis showed that the network complexity and synergy between microorganisms was improved in T4. Correlation and Random Forest analysis suggested that enriched Phanerochaete and Thermomyces in the mature stage of T4 were key taxa for lignocellulose degradation, and humic acid formation by accumulating precursors.

Tofu by-product soy whey substitutes urea: Reduced ammonia volatilization, enhanced soil fertility and improved fruit quality in cherry tomato production

Soy whey is an abundant, nutrient-rich and safe wastewater produced in tofu processing, so it is necessary to valorize it instead of discarding it as sewage. Whether soy whey can be used as a fertilizer substitute for agricultural production is unclear. In this study, the effects of soy whey serving as a nitrogen source to substitute urea on soil NH₃ volatilization, dissolved organic matter (DOM) components and cherry tomato qualities were investigated by soil column experiment. Results showed that the soil NH₄⁺-N concentrations and pH values of the 50% soy whey fertilizer combined with 50% urea (50%-SW) and 100% soy whey fertilizer (100%-SW) treatments were lower than those of 100% urea treatment (CKU). Compared with CKU, 50%-SW and 100%-SW treatments increased the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) by 6.52-100.89%, protease activity by 66.22-83.78%, the contents of total organic carbon (TOC) by 16.97-35.64%, humification index (HIX) of soil DOM by 13.57-17.99%, and average weight per fruit of cherry tomato by 13.46-18.56%, respectively. Moreover, soy whey as liquid organic fertilizer reduced the soil NH₃ volatilization by 18.65-25.27% and the fertilization cost by 25.94-51.87% compared with CKU. This study provides a promising option with economic and environmental benefits for soy whey utilization and cherry tomato production, which contributes to the win-win effectiveness of sustainable production for both the soy products industry and agriculture.

Overlooked mechanism of Pb immobilization on montmorillonite mediated by dissolved organic matter in manure compost

In this study, three kinds of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from fresh chicken manure (FDOM), immature compost (IDOM) and mature compost (MDOM) were employed to compare their effects on Pb adsorption onto montmorillonite (MMT). The potential mechanism was revealed by characterization of mineral structure and calculation of interface force. The results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity (q_max) of Pb onto MMT was decreased by 14.3% and 29.8% in the presence of FDOM and IDOM, respectively, while increased by 44.4% in the presence of MDOM, resulting from the release or co-adsorption of DOM-Pb complexes. Parallel factor (PARAFAC) further indicated that Pb mainly bound to protein-like substances in FDOM and IDOM, and fulvic-like in MDOM. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved that MDOM-Pb complex had a stronger ability to enter into the interlayer of MMT. The van der Waals force dominated the adsorption of FDOM-Pb and IDOM-Pb, while ligand exchange was involved in the case of MDOM-Pb. This study provided a comprehensive insight into the geochemical behavior of livestock manure and its compost as well as their interactions with heavy metal and soil mineral.

Machine learning framework for intelligent prediction of compost maturity towards automation of food waste composting system

Reactive composting is a promising technology for recovering valuable resources from food waste, while its manual regulation is laborious and time-consuming. In this study, machine learning (ML) technologies are adopted to enable automated composting by predicting compost maturity and providing process regulation. Four machine learning algorithms, namely random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) are employed to predict the seed germination index (GI) and C/N ratio. Based on the best fusion model with the highest R² of 0.977 and 0.986 for the multi-task prediction of GI and C/N ratio, the critical factors and their interactions with maturity are identified. Moreover, the ML model is validated on a composting reactor and the ML-based prediction application can provide regulation to ensure food waste decompose within the required time. In conclusion, this compost maturity prediction system automates the reactive composting, thus reducing labor costs.

Phytotoxicity of farm livestock manures in facultative heap composting using the seed germination index as indicator

Static facultative heap composting of animal manure is widely used in China, but there is almost no systematic research on the phytotoxicity of the produced compost. Here, we evaluated the phytotoxic variation in compost produced by facultative heap composting of four types of animal manure (chicken manure, pig manure, sheep manure, and cattle manure) using different plant seeds (cucumber, radish, Chinese cabbage, and oilseed rape) to determine germination index (GI). The key factors that affected GI values were identified, including the dynamics of the phytotoxicity and microbial community during heap composting. Sensitivity to toxicity differed depending on the type of plant seed used. Phytotoxicity during facultative heap composting, evaluated by the GI, was in the order: chicken manure (0-6.6 %) < pig manure (14.4-90.5 %) < sheep manure (46.0-93.0 %) < cattle manure (50.2-105.8 %). Network analysis showed that the volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration was positively correlated with Firmicutes abundance, and NH₄⁺-N was correlated with Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. More bacteria were stimulated to participate in conversions of dissolved organic carbon, dissolved nitrogen, VFA, and ammonia-nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) in sheep manure heap composting than that in other manure. The GI was most affected by VFA in chicken manure and cattle manure heap composting, while NH₄⁺-N was the main factor affecting the GI in pig manure and sheep manure compost. The dissolved carbon and nitrogen content and composition, as well as the core and proprietary microbial communities, were the primary factors that affected the succession of phytotoxic substances in facultative heap composting, which in turn affected GI values. In this study, the key pathways of livestock manure composting that affected GI and phytotoxicity were found and evaluated, which provided new insights and theoretical support for the safe use of organic fertilizer.

Effect of microbial agents on maturity, humification, and stability and the bacterial succession of spent mushroom substrate composting

Two composting experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of commercial microbial agents on microbial succession and nutrient flow such as humification, maturation, and stability during the aerobic composting of the spent mushroom substrate (SMS). The cellulose degradation rate of T (added microbial agents at the initial stage) reached 41.8%, which was much significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of CK (14.9%). The seed germination index (GI) in T (82.38%) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that in CK (74.74%) in the maturation phase. Moreover, the total organic carbon/total nitrogen ratio (C/N) and electrical conductivity (EC) value of T decreased to 10.5 and 2.37 mS/cm, respectively. Chemical detection and fluorescence excitation-emission region integration method (EEM-FRI) analysis showed that the microbial agents significantly accelerated the organic matter (OM) decomposition and promoted the quality of mature compost using SMS as a single raw material. The bacterial abundance of T was significantly richer than the CK due to the addition of microbial agents. The results could provide a comprehensive understanding of adding microbial agents into composting SMS and a scientific feasibility strategy to rational utilization of resources in the edible fungi industry, which was conducive to the waste management and sustainable development of the edible fungi industry.

In situ generated oxygen distribution causes maturity differentiation during electrolytic oxygen aerobic composting

Electrolytic oxygen aerobic composting (EOAC) is an effective treatment with greater technical superiority and cost advantages for organic solid waste using in situ electrolytic oxygen as a feasible strategy to replace conventional aeration. However, the unclear effects of distribution and variation of in situ electrolytic oxygen on compost maturation in different depth zones of EOAC need further exploration. This study demonstrated that the humification of organic matter was faster at the bottom than in the middle and at the top. The main reason was that the higher oxygen content and lower moisture content in the bottom promoted microbial degradation and heat production, resulting in higher temperatures. The microbial analysis showed that the abundance of typical thermophilic bacteria (such as Cerasibacillus, Lactobacillus, and Pseudogracilibacillus) that could promote compost maturation was higher at the bottom than in the middle and at the top. The finding provided in-depth molecular insights into differentiated humification from bottom to top in EOAC and revealed its further practical engineering applications.

Insight into the Soil Dissolved Organic Matter Ligand-Phenanthrene-Binding Properties Based on Parallel Faction Analysis Combined with Two-Dimensional Correlation Spectroscopy

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can strongly bind to organic contaminants and control phenanthrene in soil. Herein, four individual parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) components were found in soil DOM. Component C1 was the humic-like component ligand T, and component C2 was a combination of humic fluorophore ligands M1 and M2. Furthermore, components C3 and C4 were characterized as terrestrial and ubiquitous humic substances. Then, the modified Stern-Volmer complexation model was used to reveal soil DOM component-phenanthrene-binding properties. The overall binding characteristics of a PARAFAC component could not express the phenanthrene-binding properties. Therefore, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy was used to reveal DOM ligand-phenanthrene-binding properties. After binding with phenanthrene, DOM ligands T, M2, A2, and C1 were quenched but DOM ligands M1, A1, and C2 were excited. The ligands with higher humification presented higher phenanthrene-binding ability. With these promising results, the DOM ligand-phenanthrene-binding characteristics offered theoretical support for soil pollution control.

Characteristics of oxytetracycline stress-sensitive microbe-dissolved organic matter component interactions during composting

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has important impacts on the transportation of antibiotics through chemical and biological processes in composting. The interaction between DOM and antibiotics is reciprocal. The interaction between DOM ligands and antibiotics could be characterized based on a technique combining parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and microbial community structure analysis. However, PARAFAC cannot reveal the dynamic changes in each DOM peak in one PARAFAC component under antibiotic stress. In this study, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) combined with PARAFAC and bacterial community diversity analyses were employed to reveal the effects of oxytetracycline (OTC) stress and the key microorganisms on the transformation of different fluorescent peaks from DOM PARAFAC components during chicken manure composting. The results showed that OTC inhibits the transformation between DOM PARAFAC components by inhibiting the core microbial activities involved in the transformation of DOM components. Protein-like components (C1 and C2) were more sensitive to OTC residue, and components with a high humification degree promoted the degradation of OTC. The interaction between special DOM PARAFAC components and certain bacteria affects the degradation of OTC. The DOM PARAFAC components A2(C1), B1(C2), B2(C2) and Z1(C4) enhanced OTC degradation by stimulating the genera Pseudomonas, Glycomyces and Hyphomicrobium. With these promising results, the true effect of DOM PARAFAC components on the degradation of OTC can be revealed, which is helpful for addressing antibiotic contamination to improve the bioavailability of compost products.

Insight into complexation of Cd(II) and Cu(II) to fulvic acid based on feature recognition of PARAFAC combined with 2DCOS

Fulvic acid which could govern the environmental geochemistry behavior of heavy metals is considered as the eco-friendly substances for controlling heavy metal pollutants in environment. Knowledge on the individual fulvic acid ligand is crucial to characterize the effect of fulvic acid on the migration and toxicity of metal pollutants. Herein, fulvic acid substances were analyzed by fluorescence quenching associated with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Three components were identified based on PARAFAC. Furthermore, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) associated with complexation model were used to elucidate the Cd(II)- and Cu(II)-binding characteristics of the individual fulvic acid ligand. The Cd(II)- and Cu(II)-binding capability and speed of different fulvic acid ligands were revealed and theoretical guidance and technical support were provided for the practical application. The Cd(II) contaminated soil could be amended with high fulvic acid ligands A1 and Y2 containing composting products and the Cu(II) contaminated soil could be amended with high fulvic acid ligands Y1, T1 and A1 containing composting products to control the pollution and improve the soil condition. Based on these excellent results, the different fulvic acid ligands-contaminants-binding properties was characterized for the theoretical supporting of environmental pollution control.

Effect of superphosphate addition on heavy metals speciation and microbial communities during composting

Superphosphate fertilizer (SSP) as an additive can reduce the nitrogen loss and increase available phosphorus in composting but few studies investigated the effect of SSP addition on heavy metal and microbial communities. In this study, different ratios (10%, 18%, 26%) of SSP were added into pig manure composting to assess the changes of heavy metal (Cu, Mn, As, Zn, and Fe) fractions, bacterial and fungal communities as well as their interactions. SSP addition at 18% had lower ecological risk but still increased the bioavailability of Cu, Mn, and Fe in composts compared to control. Adding 18% SSP into compost decreased bacterial number and increased the fungal diversity compared to CK. Redundancy analysis indicated heavy metal fractions correlated significantly with bacterial and fungal community compositions in composting with 18% SSP. Network analysis showed adding 18% SSP increased microbial interaction and positive cooperation especially enhanced the proportion of Proteobacteria and Ascomycota.

Effects of phosphate-containing additives and zeolite on maturity and heavy metal passivation during pig manure composting

This study investigated the effects of the combination of phosphogypsum with calcium oxide (PPG + CaO), superphosphate with calcium oxide (SSP + CaO) and zeolite (Zeolite) on composting maturity and heavy metal passivation in pig manure composting. The results showed that all treatments reached the maturity requirements and the phosphorus-containing additive treatments had higher final germination indices (GIs). Compared with CK, additive treatments enhanced the compost maturity by promoting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) decomposition (26.4%-30.5%) and formation of stable humus substances. All additive amendment treatments increased humic acid-like substances by over 20%, and the PPG + CaO treatment had the highest level of humus. Composting process reduced the bioavailability of Cu (49.2%), Cd (5.0%), Cr (54.3%), and Pb (26.6%). Correlation analysis found that the heavy mental passivation rate was significantly negatively correlated with the contents of VFAs and nitrogenous substances, and positively correlated with the pH, GI, humic acid content and the ratio of humic acid to fulvic acid (HA/FA). Therefore, the PPG + CaO treatment further increased the passivation rates of Cu (65.6%), Cd (21.7%), and Pb (48.7%) and decreased the mobilization of Zn by promoting maturity and humification during composting.

Roles of organic matter transformation in the bioavailability of Cu and Zn during sepiolite-amended pig manure composting

The application of clay minerals facilitates the bioavailability of heavy metals and the humification in livestock manure composting. However, whether the humification plays a critical role in the bioavailability of heavy metals is still unclear. Here, with the addition of sepiolite (SEP), the fractions of Cu and Zn, and the spectral characteristics of humic acids (HAs) during aerobic pig manure composting were investigated. The SEP-amended composting had a decreased peak temperature and an increased electrical conductivity, regardless of the SEP dosage. The seed germination index increased by 15.9 ± 0.5% (p < 0.05) with the appropriate dosage of SEP (6%), indicating a higher maturity and a lower phytotoxicity of the SEP-amended compost. The addition of SEP reduced the water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) content and increased the percentage of HAs by 2.8-10.7%. More interestingly, during SEP-amended composting, the reducible fraction of heavy metals was transformed into the oxidizable fraction, and the bioavailability of Cu and Zn decreased by 11.0-15.9% and 15.4-26.5%, respectively. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra and fluorescence spectra analyses showed that the SUVA₂₅₄ and complex fluorescent components of HAs in the SEP-amended composting increased by 4.4-15.8% and 1.2-9.0%, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) further confirmed that the addition of SEP increased the aromatic index and percentage of carbonyl-carboxyl C of HAs by 3.4-8.3% and 4.6-5.7%, respectively. The redundancy analyses (RDA) described the SUVA₂₅₄, aromatic index and carbonyl-carboxyl C of HAs had a strong positive correlation with the oxidizable fraction of heavy metals, which was further confirmed by variance partitioning analysis (VPA). Overall, this work suggested that the HAs structure play an important role in the bioavailability of Cu and Zn during SEP-amended composting, potentially providing safe organic fertilizer.

Impact of biochar, calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer and spent mushroom substrate on humification and heavy metal passivation during composting

The effects of exogenous additives (biochar, calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, and spent mushroom substrate) on humification process and heavy metal passivation during pig manure composting were investigated. The aerobic composting trial were carried out in 60 L reactors for 49 d. The calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, biochar, and spent mushroom substrate amendment treatments all accelerated the organic matter degradation and increased the temperature, decreased the volatile fatty acid content by 45%-49.0% and promoted humification of the compost (increasing the humic acid content and humus index). The biochar passivated Cu best, calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer passivated Zn best (passivation rate 13.85%), and spent mushroom substrate passivated Cd, Cr, and Pb best (passivation rates 25.47%-47.91%). The additives amendment improved Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Pb passivation performance by promoting composting humification process.

Characterization of mercury binding to different molecular weight fractions of dissolved organic matter

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can strongly complex with various contaminants. Therefore, DOM was deemed as an environmentally friendly substance for controlling the mobility, bioavailability, speciation, toxicity, and fate of metal contaminants in environment. In this study, composting-derived DOM was categorized into three fractions based on different molecular weights (MWs). Furthermore, parallel faction analysis (PARAFAC), two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS), and a complexation model were employed to reveal the contaminate-binding characterization. Two PARAFAC fluorescence components were identified in the MW < 1 kDa and the 1 kDa < MW < 5 kDa fractions, respectively. In the MW > 5 kDa fraction, three PARAFAC components were identified. Protein-like component C5 did not have the Hg²⁺-binding ability. Moreover, the results showed that not all the DOM ligands could bind with contaminants, but a high humification degree of composting DOM ligands could strongly bind Hg²⁺. In addition, DOM ligand with a low humification degree DOM ligands presented a higher Hg²⁺-binding speed. Subsequently, DOM from different MWs DOM could be applied separately to the different pollution forms. With these promising results, the different DOM ligand-Hg²⁺-binding properties were characterized to provide theoretical support for environmental pollution control.

Interactions between dissolved organic matter and perfluoroalkyl acids in natural rivers and lakes: A case study of the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin, China

Understanding the interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) is essential for predicting the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments. Based on field investigations in the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin combined with laboratory experiments, we obtained DOM and PFAA concentrations as well as compositions and investigated key factors of DOM affecting PFAA variability and capture of PFAAs by DOM. Results indicated that the total concentrations of PFAAs were 73.4-689 ng/L in surface water and that PFAAs were dominated by C3-7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. The main components of DOM included tyrosine-, fulvic-, and tryptophan-like substances. The Mantel test revealed a significant positive correlation between DOM and PFAAs (P = 0.0001). Fulvic-like substances were identified as the most crucial factors affecting PFAA variability. The laboratory experiments revealed that DOM can spontaneously aggregate into a microgel. Furthermore, 19.1-50.9% of PFAAs, DOM characteristic peaks, and several metals (Ca, Mg, Cu, and Fe) can be removed during aggregation, indicating the capacity of DOM binding organic/inorganic substances. The fulvic-like substances were more effectively removed than the protein-like substances. The distribution coefficients of all PFAAs except perfluorohexanoic acid significantly correlated with their perfluorinated carbon numbers (r = 0.975, p<0.001). Our results provided insights into the interactions between DOM and PFAAs, improving the understanding of the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments.

Improving the humification and phosphorus flow during swine manure composting: A trial for enhancing the beneficial applications of hazardous biowastes

Improving the recovery of organic matter and phosphorus (P) from hazardous biowastes such as swine manure using acidic substrates (ASs) in conjunction with aerobic composting is of great interest. This work aimed to investigate the effects of ASs on the humification and/or P migration as well as on microbial succession during the swine manure composting, employing multivariate and multiscale approaches. Adding ASs, derived from wood vinegar and humic acid, increased the degree of humification and thermal stability of the compost. The ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge structure analyses demonstrated compost P was in the form of struvite crystals, Ca/Al-P phases, and Poly-P (all inorganic P species) as well as inositol hexakisphosphate and Mono-P (organophosphorus species). However, the efficiency of P recovery could be improved by generating more struvite by adding the ASs. The flows among nutrient pools resulted from the diversity in the dominant microbial communities in different composting phases after introducing the ASs and appearance of Bacillus spp. in all phases. These results demonstrate the potential value of ASs for regulating and/or improving nutrients flow during the composting of hazardous biowastes for producing higher quality compost, which may maximize their beneficial benefits and applications.

Cellulolytic bacteria joined with deproteinized whey decrease carbon to nitrogen ratio and improve stability of compost from wine production chain by-products

Composting residues from wine and dairy chains would contribute to increase the environmental sustainability of the production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of deproteinized whey combined with bioactivators on the composting process. Bacillus velezensis and Kocuria rhizophila, bacteria with cellulolytic activity, were isolated from raw materials and inoculated in the organic mass to be composted. Piles moistened with deproteinized whey showed the highest reduction of total and dissolved organic carbon due to the stimulation of bacterial activity by nitrogen compounds held within deproteinized whey. Such findings were also confirmed by the speed up of the microbial carbon mineralization. Bioactivators and deproteinized whey speeded up the composting process and returned compost characterized by high stability and quality. The addition of available N is crucial to improve the composting process and can act even better if combined with cellulolytic bacteria.

Effects of long-term perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposure on activated sludge performance, composition, and its microbial community

The widespread presence and persistence of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in wastewater treatment plants, as well as its toxicity and bioaccumulation potential, necessitates the investigation on their impact on bioreactor performance. A 48-day exposure test was adopted to study the effects of low (10 μg L-1) and high (1000 μg L-1) PFOS concentrations in a sequencing batch reactor on the performance, composition, and microbial community of activated sludge. The results suggested that adding PFOS at low and high concentrations lowered the removal efficiency of total nitrogen by 22.48% (p < 0.01) and 16.30% (p < 0.01) respectively, while enhanced that of total phosphorus by 1.87% (p > 0.05) and 7.07% (p < 0.05) respectively, compared with the control group. The addition of PFOS also led to the deterioration of activated sludge dewatering performance. Composition and spectroscopic measurements revealed that the PFOS dosage changed the composition of the activated sludge. Furthermore, the PFOS altered the structure and function of the activated sludge microbial community as well as key enzyme activities.

Evaluation of the effects of adding activated carbon at different stages of composting on metal speciation and bacterial community evolution

Information on the passivation of heavy metals (HMs) by environmental factors and microbial communities during activated carbon (AC) composting remains limited. Thus, this study elucidated the dynamic changes in HM fractions during chicken manure composting after AC amendment at different periods (initial period: T1, thermophilic period: T2, cooling period: T3). Compared with the initial stage, organic matter concentrations in the control, T1, T2, and T3 groups decreased by 15.9%, 25.8%, 22.6%, and 19.0%, respectively, at the end of composting. The HM-fractions results showed that the passivation sequence of HMs by AC was the highest for Zn, followed by Cu and Pb. AC addition in T2 significantly affected the bacterial community. Variance partitioning analysis indicated that AC accelerated the passivation effect on Zn and Pb by regulating environmental factors, and on Cu by influencing the microbial community. These results are helpful for understanding the mechanism of HM passivation in AC aerobic composting, and are also conducive to the environmentally friendly treatment of livestock and poultry manure.

Elevated temperature altered the binding sequence of Cd with DOM in arable soils

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the most active soil components, which plays pivotal roles in the migration and fate of heavy metals in soils. The interactions of heavy metals with DOM are controlled by the structure and properties of DOM. The changes of temperature have a significant effect on the content and composition of DOM and thus may affect the binding nature of heavy metals with DOM. In the current study, we conducted a 180-d incubation experiment with an arable soil at temperatures of 15, 30 and 45 °C. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to examine the composition of DOM and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy was applied to determine the binding intensity and sequence between cadmium (Cd) with DOM. Two humic-like substances (C1, C3) and a protein-like substance (C2) were identified from soil DOM. Elevated temperature changed the characteristic and structure of DOM. The humification degree and aromaticity of DOM increased from 15 °C to 30 °C but decreased at high temperature (45 °C). The alterations in temperature exert no impact on the type of organic functional groups in DOM binding with Cd. However, elevated temperature changed the binding sequence of Cd with DOM fractions. Polysaccharide, phenolic, and aromatic groups exhibited the fastest response to Cd at 15, 30, and 45 °C, respectively. These observations would provide a better understanding on the environmental behavior of Cd in arable soils under the context of global warming.

Constructed microalgal-bacterial symbiotic (MBS) system: Classification, performance, partnerships and perspectives

The microalgal-bacterial symbiotic (MBS) system shows great advantages in the synchronous implementation of wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery. To enhance the understanding of different MBS systems, this review summarizes reported MBS systems and proposes three patterns according to the living state of microalgae and bacteria. They are free microalgal-bacterial (FMB) system, attached microalgal-bacterial (AMB) system and bioflocculated microalgal-bacterial (BMB) system. Compared with the other two patterns, BMB system shows the advantages of microalgal biomass harvesting and application. To further understand the microalgal-bacterial partnerships in the bioflocculation of BMB system, this review discusses bioflocs characteristics, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) properties and production, and the effect of microalgae/bacteria ratio and microalgal strains on the formation of bioflocculation. Microalgal biomass production and application are important for BMB system development in the future. Food processing wastewater characterized by high biodegradability and low toxicity should be conducive for microalgal cultivation. In addition, exogenous addition of functional bacteria for nutrient removal and bioflocculation formation would be a crucial research direction to facilitate the large-scale application of BMB system.

Accelerated humification and alteration of microbial communities by distillers' grains addition during rice straw composting

This research explored the influence of distillers' grains amendment on the humification performance and microbial communities during rice straw composting. The composition of dissolved organic matter and maturity index were analyzed by the fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis. High-throughput sequencing and redundancy analysis were employed for revealing the structure dynamics for microbial community and their shaping factors, respectively. Results indicated that addition of distillers' grains effectively increased the microbial activity, which was beneficial to the organic matter degradation and nitrogen conservation. Microbial community structures were significantly changed with different amendment strategies. Nitrate, water soluble carbon, organic matter, ammonium were the key parameters influencing the variation of bacterial community in different treatments. Water soluble carbon significantly affected the dominant fungal community dynamics. These results showed that addition of distillers' grains effectively improved the nutritional status and changed the microbial communities during rice straw composting.

Rhizosphere dissolved organic matter and iron plaque modified by organic amendments and its relations to cadmium bioavailability and accumulation in rice

Organic amendments can modify rhizosphere dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties and Fe-plaque quantity, thereby affecting cadmium (Cd) bioavailability and uptake by rice. Pot experiments were conducted to investigate effects of biochar (BC) and vermicompost (VC) at different rates (0, 1%, and 5%) on rhizosphere DOM characteristics and Fe-plaque quantity, and their impacts on Cd bioavailability and accumulation in high and low Cd-accumulation rice cultivars (HAC and LAC). Soil DOM was characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectrum analyses. Hydroponic experiments were conducted to investigate effects of BC- or VC-derived DOM combined Fe-plaque on Cd uptake by rice. Results showed that increasing rates of organic amendments increased DOM concentration while decreased Cd availability in rhizosphere and bulk soils and Cd contents in rice tissues. The Cd reduction in LAC grains (31.9%-72.7%) was better than that in HAC grains (6.3%-25.4%) after organic amendment addition. Soil DOM properties were modified by organic amendments towards higher aromaticity, molecular weight, and stability. VC resulted in a greater increase of humic-like fractions but reduced protein-like proportions in rhizosphere DOM over BC. Negative correlations were observed between humic-like fractions and available Cd in the rhizosphere. Likewise, VC (especially 5%VC) promoted the formation of Fe-plaque and limited Cd soil-to-root transport, while BC groups showed a reverse trend. The results of hydroponic experiments confirmed BC- and VC-derived DOM and Fe-plaque further inhibited Cd uptake by rice via the complexation with Cd and the sequestration of Cd, respectively. Hence, VC application combined with low Cd-accumulation rice could be an effective strategy for the safe utilization of Cd-contamination soils.

Variation in the content and fluorescent composition of dissolved organic matter in soil water during rainfall-induced wetting and extract of dried soil

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is present in all soils, providing a readily available carbon source for microorganisms, which influences microbially mediated biogeochemical processes. Rainfall-induced wetting can alter the content and composition of soil DOM. However, conventional methods commonly used to extract DOM from soils involve air- or oven-drying followed by extraction with water, and the results vary considerably in terms of indexes used. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the variation in DOM content and composition of soil gravity water and capillary water during wetting, and establish a better method to obtain real soil DOM information. Following simulated rainfall (50 mm h^-1, 0-24 h), gravity water and capillary water in fresh soil samples were separated using a high-speed refrigerated centrifuge. Additionally, DOM in dried soil samples was extracted using various soil/water ratios after drying by different methods. The DOM data obtained by conventional methods were compared with capillary water data. The results showed that DOM degradation occurred mainly in capillary water close to the surface of soil particles. Among the six fluorescent components of DOM identified, a tryptophan-like component (E_x/E_m = 295/335 nm and 230/335 nm) was possibly derived from terrestrial plants, and a tyrosine-like component (E_x/E_m = 265/305 nm) was likely derived from microbial secretion. Except for little variation in the fluorescence index, dissolved organic carbon concentrations in capillary water were double those in dried soil extracted by conventional methods. The humification index and spectral slope ratio of DOM extracted by conventional methods also markedly varied, and no clear patterns were observed for the variation in specific UV absorbance at 254 nm. These findings allow real information to be obtained regarding soil DOM during wetting, and better selection of the extraction method and indexes when studying soil DOM.

Phosphorus excess changes rock phosphate solubilization level and bacterial community mediating phosphorus fractions mobilization during composting

This study investigated the changes of phosphorus (P) fractions, bacterial community and their response to available P or carbon (C):P during composting with different rock phosphate (RP) addition levels. Results showed that adding RP at 10% or 15% promoted the rise of temperature, maturity and Olsen P accumulation in composting, which had a higher amount of RP solubilization than other groups. Available P changed bacterial composition and decreased diversity in composts. RP solubilization efficiency was negatively correlated to C:P ratio and the highest (22.7%) when 10% RP was added, in which bacterial community changed from "function redundancy" to "intensive P-solubilization". Low C:P ratio (〈300) increased the RP solubilization ratio especially within 135-160. Therefore, this study proposed that adding P-rich substrates to decrease C:P ratio could regulate P-solubilizers' activity for increasing RP solubilization efficiency during composting.

Effects of microorganism-mediated inoculants on humification processes and phosphorus dynamics during the aerobic composting of swine manure

There is significant interest in the treatment of swine manure, which is a hazardous biowaste and a source of pathogenic contamination. This work investigated the effects of microorganism-mediated inoculants (MMIs) on nutrient flows related to humification or phosphorus (P) dynamics during the aerobic composting of swine manure. The impact of MMIs on microbe succession was also evaluated. The addition of MMIs had positive effects associated with nutrient flows, including thermal activation, decreases in certain fluorescence emissions, lower mass loss and variations in levels of certain elements and functional groups. MMIs altered the maturation behavior and kinetics of organic matter while improving microbial activity. Phosphorus was found in the compost in the forms of MgNH₄PO₄·6H₂O crystals and Poly-P as the IP species, and Mono-P as the OP species in compost generated from the dissolution or inter-transformation among P pools. These nutrient flows are attributed to changes in the structure of microbial communities as a consequence of introducing MMIs. Diverse microbial compositions were identified in different composting phases, although Bacillus appeared in each phase. This work provides support for the aerobic composting of hazardous biowaste as well as an improved understanding of nutrient flows, as a means of producing higher quality compost.

Composting of fish waste and its phytotoxicity effects

This work aimed to evaluate the composting of the mixture of residues from fish filleting, using sawdust as a structuring material as an alternative for stabilization, through physical-chemical analysis and phytotoxicity. The experiment was carried out in a composter 1.10 m long, 1.50 m wide, and 1.20 m high and presenting 2.50 m in total height, which received the mixture of fish filleting wastes and sawdust in a5:3 ratio, respectively. The results demonstrated that composting in cells is an efficient alternative for the decomposition of the mixture of fish filleting and sawdust residues. The rapid decomposition of fish waste and the low C/N ratio harms the development of thermophilic microorganisms during the composting of the mixture of fish filleting and sawdust residues. The compaction of the sawdust layers and the absence of stirring in the composting method in cells collaborate for the compost to need a time greater than 60 days to be recommended as simple organic fertilizer. The biomass stirring is necessary so that sawdust can be considered a good structuring agent. The phytotoxicity test should be taken into account by the Normative Instruction n° 25/2009 as an indicator of compost maturity.

Evaluating the phytotoxicity of dissolved organic matter derived from black carbon

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from black carbon (BC) can migrate from soil to river by rainfall or snow melting in nature. Because of the incomplete biomass combustion, BC produced at various temperatures is mixed, which is hard to divide the DOM at single temperature. Then it is difficult to explore the properties and risks of DOM in detail. Therefore, corn straws were selected to prepare BC under different heating temperature (200 °C, 250 °C, 300 °C, 350 °C, 400 °C and 450 °C). Germination index combined the excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor (PARAFAC) and two-dimensional correlation spectra was employed to clarify the phytotoxicity and the PARAFAC components of DOM derived from BC at single temperature. Results showed that BC was hard to dissolve in water, but most of its DOM were toxic. Heating temperature promoted the formation of simple and complex fluorescent components. Combined with volume integration, it is the complex peaks of fluorescent components to determine the phytotoxicity of DOM derived from BC. These results would help to build a deep understanding of the fluorescence characteristics and toxicity of BC at different temperatures and emphasize the importance of reducing straw by burning.

The influence mechanism of dissolved organic matter on the adsorption of Cd (II) by calcite

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been widely existed in the soil, which has great influence on the adsorption of heavy metals by minerals. In this paper, the effects of DOM on Cd (II) adsorption by calcite were studied. In the presence of DOM (5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and 20 mg/L), the maximum sorption of Cd (II) by calcite reduced from 48.94 mg/g to 44.14 mg/g, 28.11 mg/g, and 22.30 mg/g, respectively. The characterizations (XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR, 3D-EEM, and UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap) were used to further study the mechanism about the effects of DOM on the adsorption of Cd (II) by calcite. These results showed calcite exhibited a significant adsorption capacity for Cd (II) at pH = 6.0, and CdCO₃ was formed on the surface of calcite after calcite reaction with Cd (II). Meanwhile, the fractionation of DOM by calcite could change the binding characteristics of DOM to calcite, which would increase the migration of Cd (II) in the solution. After the reaction of DOM with Cd (II) and calcite, Cd (II)-DOM complex was formed, and part of calcite was dissolved in the solution which would further increase the migration of Cd (II) and decrease the adsorption of Cd (II) by calcite. This paper might help further understand the effect of calcite and DOM on the environmental behavior of Cd (II) in the soil environment.

Molecular insights into the effects of pyrolysis temperature on composition and copper binding properties of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM), which has a substantial impact on the environmental behavior of heavy metals, is critical for understanding the environmental efficacy of biochar. Here, we used a suite of advanced spectroscopic and mass spectroscopic methods to investigate the relationship among the pyrolysis temperature of biochar, composition of BDOM, and interactions of BDOM with Cu. The binding affinity of BDOM and Cu showed incredibly increase, with the increasing pyrolysis temperature (300-500 °C) which promoted the release of condensed aromatic compounds and oxygen-containing functional groups from biochar into dissolved phase. A notable difference in the sequences binding with Cu was occurred during the changing pyrolysis temperature. The amide only involved in the binding process between Cu and BDOM at low-temperature (300 and 400 °C), whereas phenolic only associated with the such binding process at high-temperature (500 °C). Apart from this, the carboxyl and polysaccharides took part in the binding process of Cu with BDOM, no matter how higher the temperature is. A further analysis by X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that bidentate carboxylic-Cu complexes appear to be the predominant binding pattern for Cu to BDOM. Our results might contribute to provide novel information for the environment applications of biochar.

Critical passivation mechanisms on heavy metals during aerobic composting with different grain-size zeolite

Available information about the passivation effect on heavy metals (HMs) through adsorption and humification during zeolite-amended composting remains limited. Thus, this study explored the dynamic changes in HM-fractions (Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr and Pb) during aerobic composting added with different grain-size zeolite (Fine zeolite, < 0.1 mm, ZF; Coarse zeolite: 3-5 mm, ZC). Compared to the control (without zeolite, CK) and ZF treatments, ZC treatment got the highest temperature in the thermophilic phase, and significantly reduced the bioavailability factor (BF) of HMs, especially for Cu (45.13%), Cd (16.11%) and Pb (25.49%). Redundancy analysis (RDA) and structural equation models (SEMs) indicated that zeolite accelerated the passivation effect on Cd and Pb through regulating the electrical conductivity (EC) as a result of surface adsorption, and on Cu by influencing total carbon (TC) under the function of humification. These results increase our understanding of the passivation mechanisms of HMs during aerobic composting.

Complexing characteristics between Cu(Ⅱ) ions and dissolved organic matter in combined sewer overflows: Implications for the removal of heavy metals by enhanced coagulation

Enhanced coagulation has been widely used in storm tanks to remove heavy metal ions (HMs) from combined sewer overflows (CSOs), but faces challenges on removing the HMs bound to dissolved organic matter (DOM) with small molecular weight (MW). DOM ubiquitously existing in CSOs generally contains a large distribution range of MW, which can significantly impact the MW distribution of HMs by complexing reaction, thereby adding uncertainties for the removal efficiency of coagulation. Therefore, realizing the potential MW distribution of the HMs bound to CSO-DOM is greatly important for cost-effectively removing HMs from CSOs in the coagulation process. This paper presents a comprehensive approach of ultrafiltration, fluorescence quenching titration, excitation-emission matrix parallel factor analysis, complexation model, and two-dimensional correlation fluorescence spectroscopy for exploring the MW-based complexing characteristics between Cu(II) ions and CSO-DOM components. Results show that: (1) Cu(II) ions that bound to the CSO-DOM were mainly distributed in the MW range of <5 kDa, which makes them very difficult to be removed from CSOs by coagulation technique. (2) Concentration effect and molecular composition exerted great impacts on the MW distribution of the Cu(II) ions bound to CSO-DOM. (3) The humic-like component of terrestrial origin with the MW range of 100 kDa∼0.45 μm possessed high binding stability, capacity, and priority with Cu(II) ions, and they could be used at a high concentration to promote the removal efficiency of coagulation for Cu(Ⅱ) ions of CSOs by competitive complexation and inter-molecular bridging.

Evaluation of the Phytotoxicity of Leachate from a Municipal Solid Waste Landfill: The Case Study of Bukov Landfill

Municipal solid waste landfilling, landfilling process and landfill reclamation result in leachate, which may be dangerous to the environment. Municipal solid waste leachate phytotoxicity tests were performed using the toxicity test and a subchronic toxicity pot experiment by direct application of leachate to reference soil in 5, 25, and 50% concentration for a period of 28 days. White mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seeds were exposed to different leachate dilution. Leachate were collected monthly in 2018 in the period from April to September. Furthermore, pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen were measured. The inhibition results on Sinapis alba L. seeds in the tested leachate samples ranged from −18.02 to 39.03%. Lower concentration of leachate showed a stimulating effect (only for Sample 1 and Sample 2 at 5% concentration). It was found out that leachate taken at the landfill is phytotoxic. The results of measurements are based on rainfall which affects the quantity and quality of the leachate. The values of germinated seeds/growing plants from the subchronic toxicity pot experiment ranged from 80 to 104%; therefore, the leachate is considered phytotoxic. However, it was confirmed that leachate may be used for landfill irrigation.

Molecular investigation into the transformation of dissolved organic matter in mature landfill leachate during treatment in a combined membrane bioreactor-reverse osmosis process

This study investigated the effectiveness of a combined membrane bioreactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) process for treating leachate produced by a large-scale anaerobic landfill. The MBR process had limited treatment efficiency for removing organic pollutants, but when combined with RO, the integrated system completely removed macromolecular compounds (i.e., humic- and fulvic-like substances) and produced effluent that satisfied the applicable discharge standard. The landfill leachate contained many types of DOM that had high molecular weight and were highly unsaturated. Although the MBR process removed some DOM that had a relatively low saturated degree (mainly aliphatic compounds (2.0 ≥ H/C ≥ 1.5) with relatively high bioavailability), many bio-refractory compounds were not removed. The RO system greatly reduced the content of residual DOM in MBR effluent and was effective for removing heteroatom DOM, especially polycyclic aromatics (AI > 0.66) and polyphenols (0.66 ≥ AI > 0.50). The effluent from the combined process of MBR and RO treatment mainly contained a small number of aliphatic compounds and phenolic compounds (AI ≤ 0.50 and H/C < 1.5) that had higher bioavailability than DOM in the raw leachate and posed little environmental risk.
