Occurrence and distribution of microplastics in beach sediments along Phuket coastline

Negligible additive effect of environmental concentrations of fragmented polyethylene terephthalate microplastics on the growth and reproductive performance of Java medaka exposed to 17β-estradiol and bisphenol A

To investigate whether environmental concentrations of fragmented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics (MPs) have additional or combined effects on endocrine-disrupting activity, Java medaka (Oryzias javanicus) were exposed to 17β-estradiol (E2; 5, 10, 50, and 100 ng L-1), bisphenol A (BPA; 5, 10, 50, and 100 µg L-1), and E2 and BPA combined with PET MPs (1 and 100 particles L-1) for 200 days. The growth parameters, such as body length and weight, were significantly decreased by the highest concentrations of E2 and BPA. A significant reduction in egg production was observed in female fish exposed to BPA, with an additive toxic effect of PET MPs. A female-biased sex ratio was observed in fish exposed to both chemicals. Exposure to E2 significantly increased the hepatosomatic index (HSI) in both sexes, while no significant effect was observed in the gonadosomatic index (GSI). Exposure to BPA significantly increased the HSI in female fish and decreased the GSI in both sexes of fish. An additive effect of PET MPs was observed on the GSI value of female exposed to BPA. Significant elevations in vitellogenin (VTG) levels were observed in both sexes due to exposure to E2 and BPA. Additive effects of PET MPs were observed on VTG levels in males exposed to E2 and BPA. Taken together, even long-term treatment with PET MPs induced only a negligible additive effect on the endocrine-disrupting activity in Java medaka at environmentally relevant concentrations.

First-of-Its-Kind: Nationwide meta-analysis of microplastic pollution and risk assessment in Thailand

Thailand ranks as the sixth largest contributor to global microplastic pollution, which is exacerbated by extensive plastic use. Despite rising concerns, no comprehensive review is available on microplastic contamination and its potential risk in Thailand. This review synthesised data on microplastic abundance and characteristics within the country from 118 peer-reviewed publications (2017-2024). We found predominant microplastic presence in crustaceans (1.69-160.15 items/g), followed by Mollusca (0.03-9.5 items/g) and fishes (0.01-28.17 items/g), with higher abundances in wastewater (4 × 102 to 6.09 × 105 items/m3) compared to that in freshwater (1.44-2.92 × 106 items/m3) and seawater (2.70 × 10-1 to 6.25 × 104 items/m3). Marine sediments (48.3-2.13 × 104 items/kg) also showed significantly higher microplastic concentrations than terrestrial sediments (3-2.92 × 103 items/kg). Predominant microplastics were identified as fibers (59.36% and 35.05% for biological and environmental samples, respectively) and fragments (24.14%, 30.68%) in blue (25.95%, 18.64%), and colourless/transparent (20.01%, 14.47%), primarily composed of polyethylene terephthalate (19.46%, 9.19%), nylon (3.23%, 9.99%), polypropylene (19.78%, 24.23%), and polyethylene (14.81%, 11.66%). The potential ecological risk was low in all ecosystems except for wastewater. Shrimp and fish were more susceptible to microplastics compared to other studies in the region. Additionally, the sources, transport, and pathways of microplastic pollution in Thailand's aquatic territories and the current measures and policies implemented by the government to address plastic pollution are discussed. This review has compiled up-to-date insights into the prevalence, distribution, and risks associated with microplastics, which is instrumental in formulating effective strategies for contaminant control and ultimately reducing plastic pollution.

Assessment of microplastics pollution level on clam farming and bathing beaches: a case study of Thanh Phu in Ben Tre, Vietnam

This study focused on the investigation microplastics (MPs) with a size of ≤1.0 mm in sand samples from Thanh Phu beach, Ben Tre, Vietnam. MPs in sand from the clam beach (from 39.67 ± 6.67 to 92.00 ± 12.93 items kg-1 dried sand) were higher than those from the bathing beach (from 21.33 ± 8.76 to 51.67 ± 16.11 items kg-1 dried sand), indicating a direct contribution of MPs from coastal aquaculture. For the clam beach, MPs in surface samples (0-4 cm) were lower than in deep samples (4-6 cm). In contrast, MPs in surface samples (0-2 cm) from the bathing beach were higher than deep samples (2-5 cm). A combination of microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy methods confirmed that 62.5% of the representative MPs samples or 18.9% of the suspected MPs samples were plastics. Low-density polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate were the largest in abundance. Further studies are needed to assess the environmental risk of MPs accumulation.

Coastal plastic pollution: A global perspective

Coastal ecosystems have ecological importance worldwide and require control and prevention measures to mitigate human pollution. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review to provide a comprehensive overview of the global issue of coastal plastic pollution. 689 articles were eligible for qualitative synthesis and 31 were considered for quantitative analysis. There was an exponential increase in articles addressing coastal plastic pollution over the past 50 years. Studies were mainly carried out on beaches, and plastic bottles were the most found item, followed by cigarette butts. Polyethylene was the predominant plastic polymer, and white microplastic fragments stood out. China published most articles on the topic and Brazil had the highest number of sites sampled. Meta-analysis had significant effect sizes based on the reported data. These findings carry significant implications for environmental policies, waste management practices, and targeted awareness campaigns aimed at mitigating plastic pollution.

The COVID-19 pandemic "anthropause" decreased plastic ingestion in neotropic cormorants Nannopterum brasilianus in Lima, Peru

Background

The anthropause during the recent COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique opportunity to examine the impact of human activity on seabirds. Lockdowns in Peru prevented people from visiting coastal areas, thereby reducing garbage disposal on beaches and the movement of microplastics into the ocean. This cessation of activities likely led to a temporary decrease in plastic pollution in coastal regions. We aimed to investigate this phenomenon in inshore-feeding neotropic cormorants (Nannopterum brasilianus) along the Circuito de Playas Costa Verde (CPCV), situated on the coastal strip of Lima, Peru (∼ 11 million people).

Methods

We collected and analyzed fresh pellets along the CPCV before (over 11 months) and during the pandemic lockdowns (over 8 months).

Results

Our findings revealed a significant reduction in the occurrence of plastic in pellets during the pandemic period (% Oc = 2.47, n = 647 pellets) compared to pre-pandemic conditions (% Oc = 7.13, n = 800 pellets). The most common plastic debris item found in the pellets was threadlike microplastic. Additionally, our study highlights the direct correlation between human presence on beaches and the quantity of microplastics (mainly threadlike) found in cormorant pellets. We suggest that the reintroduction of these materials into the sea, previously accumulated on the coast, is likely facilitated by the movement and activity of beachgoers toward the ocean.

Microplastics in retail shellfish from a seafood market in eastern Thailand: Occurrence and risks to human food safety

This study aimed to investigate the presence of microplastics in three economically essential shellfish species: green mussels, cockles and spotted babylon. The average abundance of microplastics ranged from 2.41 to 2.84 particles/g wet weight. The predominant shape was fiber, with colors ranging from black-grey to transparent. The size of the microplastics discovered was <1.0 mm. Polystyrene and polyethylene were the most detected types in mussels and cockles, while linen was the predominant type in spotted babylon. The Thai population's estimated annual intake (EAI) of microplastics through shellfish consumption ranged from 20.23 to 1178.42 particles/person/year. The potential human health risks were evaluated using the polymer hazard index (PHI), which led to risk categories III-IV. These findings, along with others from the literature, indicate that shellfish consumption may pose risks to human health, depending on the species consumed and the origin of the specimens.

Risk assessment of microplastic exposure: A case study near a refinery factory at the central coast of Vietnam

The goal of this study was to identify the presence of microplastics on the beach near a refinery in the central coast of Vietnam. In this study, 11 sampling sites were selected within a length of 300 m of the beach. The results showed that microplastics were presented in all collected samples with an average concentration of 1582 ± 660 MPs/kg. Fibers were the predominant shape of microplastics found in the samples, which accounted for 57.11 %, while the rest were classified as fragments. The average size of microplastics varied greatly around 83.1 ± 74.3 μm with the vast majority having a size smaller than 50 μm (41.84 %). A total of 11 polymers of microplastics were detected from collected samples, Polyethylene Terephthalate was the main polymer with 46.43 %. The pollution load index of microplastics was 3.15 showing that refinery activities could expose microplastic to the environment.

Riverine Microplastic Pollution: Insights from Cagayan de Oro River, Philippines

Rivers are vital water sources for humans and homes for aquatic organisms. Conversely, they are well known as the route of plastics into the ocean. Despite being the world's number one emitter of riverine plastics into the ocean, microplastics (MPs), or plastic particles less than 5 mm, in the Philippines' rivers are relatively unexplored. Water samples were collected from six sampling stations along the river channel of the Cagayan de Oro River, one of the largest rivers in Northern Mindanao, Philippines. The extracted microplastics' abundance, distribution, and characteristics were analyzed using a stereomicroscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed a mean concentration of 300 items/m³ of MPs dominated by blue-colored (59%), fiber (63%), 0.3-0.5 mm (44%), and polyacetylene (48%) particles. The highest concentration of microplastics was recorded near the mouth of the river, and the lowest was in the middle area. The findings indicated a significant difference in MP concentration at the sampling stations. This study is the first assessment of microplastic in a river in Mindanao. The results of this study will aid in formulating mitigation strategies for reducing riverine plastic emissions.

Effects of tidal action on the stability of microbiota, antibiotic resistance genes, and microplastics in the Pearl River Estuary, Guangzhou, China

In this study, the 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing technique was used to explore the microbial diversity and differences in the water environment of the Pearl River Estuary in Nansha District with various land use types such as the aquaculture area, industrial area, tourist area, agricultural plantation, and residential area. At the same time, the quantity, type, abundance, and distribution of two types of emerging environmental pollutants, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs), are explored in the water samples from different functional areas. The results show that the dominant phyla in the five functional regions are Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes, and the dominant genera are Hydrogenophaga, Synechococcus, Limnohabitans and Polynucleobacter. A total of 248 ARG subtypes were detected in the five regions, belonging to nine classes of ARGs (Aminoglycoside, Beta_Lactamase, Chlor, MGEs, MLSB, Multidrug, Sul, Tet, Van). Blue and white were the dominant MP colors in the five regions; 0.5-2 mm was the dominant MP size, and cellulose, rayon, and polyester comprised the highest proportion of the plastic polymers. This study provides the basis for understanding the environmental microbial distribution in estuaries and the prevention of environmental health risks from ARGs and microplastics.

Micro- and mesoplastic pollution along the coast of Peru

Peru suffers from poor solid waste and coastal management, as well as evidenced plastic pollution in various forms. However, studies in Peru focusing on small plastic debris (i.e., meso- and microplastics) are still limited and inconclusive. Thus, the present study investigated the abundance, characteristics, seasonality, and distribution of small plastic debris along the coast of Peru. The abundance of small plastic debris is predominantly driven by specific locations, where a source of contamination is present, rather than presenting seasonal patterns. Meso- and microplastics were strongly correlated in both seasons (summer and winter), suggesting meso-plastic constantly breaking down as microplastic sources. Additionally, heavy metals (e.g., Cu, Pb) were found in low concentrations (mean concentrations < 0.4%) on the surface of some mesoplastics. Here, we provided a baseline on the multiple factors involving small plastic debris on the Peruvian coast and preliminarily identify associated contaminants.

A global snapshot of microplastic contamination in sediments and biota of marine protected areas

Microplastics (MPs) become ubiquitous contaminants in Marine Protected Areas (MPA) that have been planned as a conservation strategy. The present study provides a comprehensive overview of the occurrence, abundance, and distribution of MPs potentially affecting MPA worldwide. Data on MP occurrence and levels in sediment and biota samples were collected from recent peer-reviewed literature and screened using a GIS-based approach overlapping MP records with MPA boundaries. MPs were found in 186 MPAs, with levels ranging from 0 to 9187.5 items/kg in sediment and up to 17,461.9 items/kg in organisms. Peaked MPs concentrations occurred within multiple-use areas, and no-take MPAs were also affected. About half of MP levels found within MPA fell into the higher concentration quartiles, suggesting potential impacts on these areas. In general, benthic species were likely more affected than pelagic ones due to the higher concentrations of MP reported in the tissues of benthic species. Alarmingly, MPs were found in tissues of two threatened species on the IUCN Red List. The findings denote urgent concerns about the effectiveness of the global system of protected areas and their proposed conservation goals.

Microplastics accumulation and human health risk assessment of heavy metals in Marcia opima and Lingula anatina, Phuket

The concerns over potential health risk from the consumption of Marcia opima (M. optima) and lingulata (Lingula anatina) contaminated by heavy metals (Cd, Pb and Zn) and microplastics in the eastern part of Phuket, Southern Thailand has been assessed. The abundance of microplastics in Marcia opima and Lingulata were 1.86 and 1.24 items/individual, respectively and followed the order: polyethylene terephthalate > polyester > polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl chloride. Integrated risk indices using the daily intake (EDIs) for heavy metals consumption (from 0.00001 to 0.00712 mg kg^-1 per day) are not exceeded the standards set by the ministry of public health Thailand to pose potential carcinogenic health risk individually. The bioaccumulations and hazard quotient values (<1) showed no risk exists concerning the levels of exposure, however, monitoring heavy metals concentration and microplastic contaminations on a regular basis are necessary to prioritize the local people health from pollutants exposure.

Microplastic pollution in soils, plants, and animals: A review of distributions, effects and potential mechanisms

Increasing production of synthetic plastics and poor management of plastic wastes have dramatically increased the amount of plastics in the environment. In 2014, at the first United Nations Environment Assembly, marine plastic waste pollution was listed as one of the 10 most pressing environmental issues. In addition, there is much plastic waste in terrestrial ecosystems due to substantial residues from agricultural mulching and packing. As a recently recognized pollutant, microplastics (MPs) have attracted significant attention from the public and various governments. Concentrations of MPs in the environment vary among locations, from <100 to >1 × 10⁶ particles per cubic meter. Many studies have addressed the impacts and potential mechanisms of MPs on the environment and organisms. Humans and other organisms can ingest or carry MPs in a variety of passive ways and these MPs can have a range of negative effects on metabolism, function, and health. Additionally, given their large surface area, MPs can sorb various pollutants, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, with serious implications for animals and human wellbeing. However, due to their complexity and a lack of accurate determination methods, the systematic impacts of MP pollution on whole foodwebs are not clearly established. Therefore, this review summarizes current research advances in MP pollution, particularly the impact of MPs on soils, plants, and animals, and proposes potential future research prospects to better characterize MPs.

A temporal assessment of microplastics distribution on the beaches of three remote islands of the Yasawa archipelago, Fiji

This is the first study that investigated the presence, distribution, and composition of microplastics, MPs (1-5 mm) on beaches in the Yasawa Islands, Fiji. A temporal assessment over three years on six beaches was undertaken to investigate different beach traits on MP abundance. Average MP concentration was 4.5 ± 11.1 MPs·m^-2 with significantly higher concentrations were found on east-facing beaches than west (p < 0.001), and higher on the storm line compared to the high tide line (p < 0.001). No difference was found between tourist and local beaches (p = 0.21). These results demonstrate the role of current-driven ocean transport of plastic pollution in this part of The South Pacific. ATR FT-IR analysis showed that across all sites 34 % of MPs were polypropylene (PP), 33 % polystyrene (PS), 25 % polyethylene (PE), and 8 % other polymer types. Further studies are needed to assess the potential impacts of MPs on Fiji's coral reefs and marine life.

Microplastics in ASEAN region countries: A review on current status and perspectives

A literature assessment was conducted to determine the current state of microplastics research in ASEAN countries focusing on 1) microplastics in water, sediment, and water organisms; 2) microplastics' sources and dispersion; and 3) microplastics' environmental consequences, including human toxicity. ASEAN countries contributed only about 5 % of the global scholarly papers on microplastics, with Indonesia contributing the most followed by Malaysia and Thailand. The lack of standard harmonized sampling and processing methodologies made comparisons between research difficult. ASEAN contributes the most to plastic trash ending up in the ocean, indicating a need for more work in this region to prevent plastic pollution. Microplastics are found in every environmental compartment; however, their distribution and environmental consequences have not been sufficiently investigated. There are very few studies on microplastics in the human blood system as well as respiratory organs like the lungs, indicating that more research is needed.

Separation of false-positive microplastics and analysis of microplastics via a two-phase system combined with confocal Raman spectroscopy

In the field of microplastics research, more accurate standardised methods and analytical techniques still need to be explored. In this study, a new method for the microplastics quantitatively and qualitatively analysis by two-phase (ethyl acetate-water) system combined with confocal Raman spectroscopy was developed. Microplastics can be separated from false-positive microplastics in beach sand and marine sediment, attributing to the hydrophobic-lipophilic interaction (HLI) of the two-phase system. Results show that the recovery rates of complex environment microplastics (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamide 66 (PA 66), polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene (PE)) are higher than 92.98%. Moreover, the new technique can also be used to detect hydrophobic and lipophilic antibiotics, such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX), erythromycin (EM), madimycin (MD), and josamycin (JOS), which adsorbed on microplastics and are extracted based on the dissolving-precipitating mechanism. This innovative research strategy provides a new scope for further detection of marine environment microplastics and toxic compounds adsorbed on its surface.

Occurrence, distribution and sources of microplastics in beach sediments of Miri coast, NW Borneo

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has gained a lot of global interests due to its toxicity to the surrounding ecosystems. The aim of this study is to identify the abundances, physical characteristics, polymer type and elemental composition of MPs in beach sediments of Miri coast, located in Sarawak State, East Malaysia. A total of 1553 particles from 24 sediment samples, collected from eight different beaches along Miri coastline were identified. MPs from the sediments were extracted using density separation method and analyzed through stereoscopic microscope, ATR-FTIR and SEM-EDX. MPs were present most abundant in Lutong Beach, which is the hotspot for the recreational activities. Fragments were identified as the highest abundance type of MPs, followed by fiber, foam and pellet. MPs of size of <1 mm were predominantly present in the samples. Varieties of colors were distinguished in which transparent or no color MPs were the highest quantity studied in the samples. Polymers identified were mainly polyethylene (PE), polyester (PET), polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene (PP), derived from primary and secondary MPs. Carbon and oxygen were dominant and have the highest concentration identified with other elements such as Ca, Al, Ti and Cl. The primary use of these elements as additives are associated with the manufacturing process as they are used to enhance the quality during plastic production. The outcome of this study is to be the first report to identify and characterize the MPs in beach sediments of Miri coast. The occurrence of MPs in Miri beaches may negatively impact marine organisms as this affects their food chain. As consumers, humans are most likely to be affected by the presence of MPs due to their consumption of marine animals, particularly fish present in this region.

Seasonal and spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments by FTIR imaging throughout a continuum lake - lagoon- beach from the Tunisian coast

Plastics pollution in marine environment has become an issue of increasing scientific concern. This work aims to study the temporal and spatial distribution of plastics in sediments from three different Tunisian ecosystems; Rimel Beach, Bizerta lagoon and Ichkeul lake. Sediment sampling was conducted in surface (2 cm) and depth (15 cm) during spring, summer and winter. Plastics debris were separated by size fractions: macro (>5 mm), meso (1-5 mm) and microplastics (<1 mm) to optimize the time necessary for their characterisation. Macroplastics and mesoplastics were identified using an IR Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and microplastics with Imaging Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy after an optimized extraction protocol. Results indicate that, the lowest contamination degree with macroplastics was recorded in Ichkeul lake, 2 macro debris/m² (marine protected area, national parc of Ichkeul). Mesoparticles were only detected in lagoon of Bizerte in large quantities (4900 item/kg of sediment in surface and 680 item/kg of sediment in depth) and were identified principally as paint products. For microplastics, the repartition was quite homogeneous between the three sites with an average abundance was 130.55 ± 65.61 items/kg for all seasons. The variations of microplastics abundances on the three sites could not be clearly related to the seasons. Whereas the polymer characterisation in the surface and depth sediments of the three studied areas were principally due to eight types of polymers (PVC, PET, PP, PE PS, Polyamide (PA) and polymeric methyl methacrylate (PMMA)) as reported in many other studies, surprisingly all MPs recovered in the study were smaller than 300 μm, >70 % being fragments. This study brings new results as regards to the state of plastic contamination in Tunisian coast and shows the importance of investigating different ecosystems in such studies.

Microplastic pollution in fragile coastal ecosystems with special reference to the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster, southeast coast of India

Microplastics (MPs) are a global environmental concern and pose a serious threat to marine ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the abundance and distribution of MPs in beach sediments (12 beaches), marine biota (6 beaches) and the influence of microbes on MPs degradation in eco-sensitive Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar coast. The mean MP abundance 65.4 ± 39.8 particles/m² in beach sediments; 0.19 ± 1.3 particles/individual fish and 0.22 ± 0.11 particles g^-1 wet weight in barnacles. Polyethylene fragments (33.4%) and fibres (48%) were the most abundant MPs identified in sediments and finfish, respectively. Histopathological examination of fish has revealed health consequences such as respiratory system damage, epithelial degradation and enterocyte vacuolization. In addition, eight bacterial and seventeen fungal strains were isolated from the beached MPs. The results also indicated weathering of MPs due to microbial interactions. Model simulations helped in tracking the fate and transboundary landfall of spilled MPs across the Indian Ocean coastline after the X-Press Pearl disaster. Due to regional circulations induced by the monsoonal wind fields, a potential dispersal of pellets has occurred along the coast of Sri Lanka, but no landfall and ecological damage are predicted along the coast of India.

Converting waste PET plastics into automobile fuels and antifreeze components

With the aim to solve the serious problem of white plastic pollution, we report herein a low-cost process to quantitatively convert polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into p-xylene (PX) and ethylene glycol (EG) over modified Cu/SiO₂ catalyst using methanol as both solvent and hydrogen donor. Kinetic and in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies demonstrate that the degradation of PET into PX involves tandem PET methanolysis and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) selective hydro-deoxygenation (HDO) steps with the in-situ produced H₂ from methanol decomposition at 210 °C. The overall high activities are attributed to the high Cu⁺/Cu⁰ ratio derived from the dense and granular copper silicate precursor, as formed by the induction of proper NaCl addition during the hydrothermal synthesis. This hydrogen-free one-pot approach allows to directly produce gasoline fuels and antifreeze components from waste poly-ester plastic, providing a feasible solution to the plastic problem in islands.

To solve the serious problem of white plastic pollution many degradation routes are being investigated. Here the authors show a H₂-free low-cost Cu/SiO₂ catalyzed process to quantitatively convert polyethylene terephthalate into p-xylene and ethylene glycol in one pot with methanol as both the solvent and hydrogen source at 210 °C.

Weathering indices of microplastics along marine and coastal sediments from the harbor of Cartagena (Spain) and its adjoining urban beach

Marine and coastal sediments from the harbor of Cartagena (Spain) and its adjoining beach were investigated regarding their microplastic burden. Fibers accounted for 47.62% and 61.66% in marine and coastal sediments, respectively, followed by films (31.43% and 18.76%) and fragments (20.95% and 18.65%). Polyvinyl (36.07%), polypropylene (21.31%), and polyethylene (18.03%) were isolated for marine sediments, and low-density polyethylene (40.71%), polypropylene (20.16%), and acrylate (11.37%) for coastal sediments. Highest concentrations were found in the deepest marine sediments (24.0 m) and in the furthest zone from the seashore for coastal sediments (18 m). Carbonyl index increased in the intermediate area (12.5 m) for marine sediments (0.51), whilst vinyl index was maximum for the deepest samples (1.94), reporting Norrish type I and II reactions, respectively. Coastal sediments collected close to the high tide line displayed the highest average values for both indices, 1.57 and 1.29, respectively, indicating a higher exposition to weathering variables.

The Occurrence of Microplastics in Sediment Cores from Two Mangrove Areas in Southern Thailand

Mangroves are areas that connect the land and sea, and are important to the ecosystem. They are important places for food sources and the habitat of aquatic fauna in the tidal areas. However, the existence of plastic debris poses a risk to the aquatic environment. This study aimed to investigate the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in sediment cores from two mangrove areas. The first mangrove area is in the outer section of the Songkhla lagoon (SK), while the second is in the coastal area of Pattani province (PN). Sediment core sampling was performed from SK = 8 stations and PN = 5 stations. Surface enrichment of MP was observed, especially in sediments of 0–4 cm. MPs were found throughout the depth in both areas, while fewer MPs were found in deeper sediment core layers (p < 0.05) at some stations inside the mangrove zone. Simple linear regression of the observed MPs and distance in the horizontal were found to be significant at SK within the mangrove zone with r2 = 0.79 (p < 0.05). MP fibers were the most commonly found MP type in both areas and were less than 1 mm. Blue and black MPs were the most abundant colors found in both areas. The six polymer types reported in this study comprised polyethylene, rayon, rubber, styrene, Poly (vinyl acetate), and paint. The findings of the present study suggest that long-term monitoring of marine debris along coastlines is necessary to help improve national policies and measures related to marine plastic debris.

Microplastic pollution in surface seawater and beach sand from the shore of Rayong province, Thailand: Distribution, characterization, and ecological risk assessment

The distribution, characteristics, and ecological risk of microplastics in beach sand and seawater samples collected along the shore of Rayong province, Thailand, were investigated in this study. The average microplastics abundance in beach sand and seawater was 338.89 ± 264.94 particles/kg d.w. and 1781.48 ± 1598.36 particles/m³, respectively. Beach sand and seawater had the most yellow-brown particles and transparent microfibers, respectively. The most common microplastics (100-500 μm) and polyethylene were found. In beach sand, the potential ecological risk (RI) is classified as minor, while in seawater, it is classified as medium. The PLI_zone in beach sand and seawater was Hazard Level II and Hazard Level IV, respectively. Despite their apparent proximity, the non-correlation between risk levels in beach sand and seawater may be due to polymer type variations influenced by the different land-based and sea-based sources.

Type and Distribution of Microplastics in Beach Sediment along the Coast of the Eastern Gulf of Thailand

In the oceans and coasts, plastic waste poses a global threat to biodiversity. This study examined the types and distribution of microplastics in beach sediment along the coast of the eastern Gulf of Thailand in March 2018 (northeast monsoon = dry season) and July 2018 (southwest monsoon = rainy season). Microplastic samples were collected from six stations including Koh Khramyai Beach (Chonburi Province), Koh Mannai Beach (Rayong Province), Chao Lao Beach (Chanthaburi Province, 3 stations), and Ploy Dang Beach (Trat Province). The results showed that the highest average abundances of microplastics in March and July were at Koh Mannai Beach (1698 pieces/m2) and Koh Khramyai Beach (799 pieces/m2), respectively. However, no microplastics were found at Ploy Dang Beach in July. According to polymer-type identification using an FTIR spectrometer, 17 polymer types were found in this study. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET = 39.6%) and polyamide (PA = 22.8%) were the polymer types found in the highest proportions in March and July, respectively. In addition, the fiber shape and transparent color of microplastics were found to be the most abundant.
