Abstract
Food safety is a global concern due to the risk posed by microbial pathogens, toxins and food deterioration. Hence, materials with antibacterial and antioxidant properties have been widely studied for their packaging application to ensure food safety. The current study has been designed to fabricate the chitosan/starch-based film with cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and cellulose nanofibers for active packaging. The nanocomposite films developed in this study were characterized by using UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). The biodegradability, hydrodynamic, mechanical, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the films were also evaluated. From the results, the addition of CEO and cellulose nanofibers was found to enhance the antimicrobial and material properties of the film. FE-SEM analysis has also revealed a rough and porous surface morphology for the developed nanocomposite film. FT-IR analysis further demonstrated the molecular interactions among the various components used for the preparation of the film. The film has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the film was found to reduce the bacterial load of the stored beef meat when used as a packaging material. The study hence provides valuable insights into the development of chitosan/starch-based films incorporated with CEO and cellulose nanofibers for active food packaging applications. This is due to its excellent antimicrobial and physicochemical properties. Hence, the nanocomposite film developed in the study can be considered to have promising applications in the food packaging industry.

Abstract
Since the human population realized how important it was to maintain overall health and the weight of disease, they have been looking for therapeutic qualities in natural environments. The use of plants having medicinal qualities for the treatment and prevention of illnesses that may have an impact on general health is known as herbal medicine. There has been a noticeable increase in interest lately in the combination of synthetic contemporary medications and traditional herbal remedies. About 80 % of people rely on it for healthcare, particularly in developing nations. One important aspect of overall health is said to be oral healthcare. The World Health Organization views oral health as a crucial component of overall health and well-being. Because they are more readily available, less expensive, and have fewer adverse effects than pharmaceutical treatments, using natural medicines to treat pathologic oro-dental disorders can make sense. The current evaluation of the literature sought to investigate the range and scope of the use of herbal products and their secondary metabolites in maintaining oral health, encompassing several oral healthcare domains such as halitosis, gingivitis, periodontitis, and other oral disorders. Therefore, there are many herbs discussed in this work and their mechanism in the treatment and improvement of many oral ailments. Besides, compounds that are useful in oral treatment with their natural sources and the cases where they can be used. To prevent any possible side effects or drug interactions, a doctor's consultation is necessary before using dental medicine. Although herbal therapy is safe and with minimum side effects, it is also strongly advised to do a more thorough preclinical and clinical evaluation before using herbal medicines officially.

Abstract
Cinnamomum tamala leaf (CTL), also known as Indian bay leaf, is used all over the world for seasoning, flavoring, and medicinal purposes. These characteristics could be explained by the presence of several essential bioactive substances and lipid derivatives. In this work, rapid screening and identification of the chemical compounds in supercritical (SC)-CO2 extracts of CTL by use of UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE with a multivariate statistical analysis approach was established in both negative and positive mode. A total of 166 metabolites, including 66 monocarboxylic fatty acids, 52 dicarboxylic fatty acids, 27 fatty acid amides, and 21 cinnamic acid derivatives, were tentatively identified based on accurate mass and the mass spectrometric fragmentation pattern, out of which 142 compounds were common in all SC-CO2 extracts of CTL. Further, PCA and cluster hierarchical analysis clearly discriminated the chemical profile of analyzed extracts and allowed the selection of SC-CO2 extract rich in fatty acids, fatty acid amides, and other bioactive constituents. The result showed that the higher number of compounds was detected in CTL4 (300 bar/55 °C) extract than the other CTL extracts. The mono- and di-carboxylic fatty acids, fatty acid amides, and cinnamic acid derivatives were identified in CTL for the first time. UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE combined with chemometric analysis is a powerful method to rapidly screen the metabolite profiling to justify the quality of CTL as a flavoring agent and in functional foods.

Abstract
Dental caries is a chronic oral infectious disease, and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) plays an important role in the formation of dental caries. Trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA) exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity; however, its target and mechanism of action of CA on S. mutans needs to be further explored. In this study, it was verified that CA could inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans. Further proteomic analysis identified 33, 55, and 78 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in S. mutans treated with CA for 1, 2, and 4 h, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis showed that CA interfered with carbohydrate metabolism, glycolysis, pyruvate metabolism, and the TCA cycle, as well as amino acid metabolism of S. mutans. Protein interactions suggested that pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) plays an important role in the antibacterial effect of CA. Moreover, the upstream and downstream pathways related to PDH were verified by various assays, and the results proved that CA not only suppressed the glucose and sucrose consumption and inhibited glucosyltransferase (GTF) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities but also decreased the ATP production. Interestingly, the protein interaction, qRT-PCR, and molecular docking analysis showed that PDH might be the target of CA to fight S. mutans. In summary, the study shows that CA interferes with the carbohydrate metabolism of bacteria by inhibiting glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle via binding to PDH, which verifies that PDH is a potential target for the development of new drugs against S. mutans.

Abstract
In recent years, essential oils (EOs) have received increased attention from the research community, and the EOs of cinnamon, patchouli, and geranium have become highly recognized for their antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. Due to these properties, they have become valuable and promising candidates for addressing the worldwide threat of antimicrobial resistance and other diseases. Simultaneously, studies have revealed promising new results regarding the effects of physical fields (magnetic and electric) and LASER (MEL) exposure on seed germination, plant growth, biomass accumulation, and the yield and composition of EOs. In this frame, the present study aims to investigate the influence of MEL treatments on cinnamon, patchouli, and geranium EOs, by specifically examining their composition, antimicrobial properties, and antioxidant activities. Results showed that the magnetic influence has improved the potency of patchouli EO against L. monocytogenes, S. enteritidis, and P. aeruginosa, while the antimicrobial activity of cinnamon EO against L. monocytogenes was enhanced by the electric and laser treatments. All exposures have increased the antifungal effect of geranium EO against C. albicans. The antioxidant activity was not modified by any of the treatments. These findings could potentially pave the way for a deeper understanding of the efficiency, the mechanisms of action, and the utilization of EOs, offering new insights for further exploration and application.

Abstract
Penicillium digitatum is a major postharvest pathogen that threatens the global citrus fruit industry and causes great economic losses annually. In the present study, inhibitory properties of cinnamon bark oil (CBO) against P. digitatum in vitro were investigated. Results indicated that 0.03% CBO could efficiently inhibit the spore germination, germ tube elongation, mycelial growth, colonial expansion and conidial accumulation of P. digitatum. The results of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and MitoTraker Orange (MTO) staining also proved the suppression effects of CBO against P. digitatum. Meanwhile, CBO could inhibit green mold rots induced by P. digitatum in citrus fruit when the working concentration of CBO exceeded 0.06%. In addition, the expressions of 12 genes critical for the growth and virulence of P. digitatum were also significantly regulated under CBO stress. Through a transcriptomic analysis, a total of 1802 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in P. digitatum after 4 h and 8 h of CBO treatment. Most of the DEG products were associated with carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism. They directly or indirectly led to the disturbance of the membrane and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Our results may deepen the understanding of antifungal properties of CBO against P. digitatum and provide the theoretical foundation to uncover the antifungal mechanism of CBO at the molecular level.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the changes of cell membrane structure and function of Issatchenkia terricola under citric acid by performing physiological analysis. METHODS AND RESULTS The membrane integrity, surface hydrophobicity, structure, fluidity, apoptosis, and fatty acid methyl esters composition of I. terricola WJL-G4 cells were determined by propidium iodide staining, microbial adhesion to hydrocarbon test, transmission electron microscopy analysis, fluorescence anisotropy, flow cytometry, and gas chromatography-mass, respectively. The results showed that with the increasing of citric acid concentrations, the cell vitality, membrane integrity, and fluidity of I. terricola reduced; meanwhile, apoptosis rate, membrane permeable, hydrophobicity, and ergosterol contents augmented significantly. Compared to control, the activities of Na+, K+-ATPase, and Ca2+, Mg2+-ATPase increased by 3.73-fold and 6.70-fold, respectively, when citric acid concentration increased to 20 g l-1. The cells cracked and their cytoplasm effused when the citric acid concentration reached 80 g l-1. CONCLUSIONS I. terricola could successfully adjust its membrane structure and function below 60 g l-1 of citric acid. However, for citric acid concentrations above 80 g l-1, its structure and function were dramatically changed, which might result in reduced functionality.

Abstract
The emergence of bacterial strains displaying resistance to the currently available antibiotics is a critical global concern. These resilient bacteria can form biofilms that play a pivotal role in the failure of bacterial infection treatments as antibiotics struggle to penetrate all biofilm regions. Consequently, eradicating bacteria residing within biofilms becomes considerably more challenging than their planktonic counterparts, leading to persistent and chronic infections. Among various approaches explored, essential oils loaded in nanoparticles based on biopolymers have emerged, promising strategies that enhance bioavailability and biological activities, minimize side effects, and control release through regulated pharmacokinetics. Different available reviews analyze nanosystems and essential oils; however, usually, their main goal is the analysis of their antimicrobial properties, and progress in biofilm combat is rarely discussed, or it is not the primary objective. This review aims to provide a global vision of biofilm conformation and describes mechanisms of action attributed to each EO. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in biopolymeric nanoparticles research, especially in chitosan- and zein-based nanosystems, targeting multidrug-resistant bacteria in both their sessile and biofilm forms, which will help to design precise strategies for combating biofilms.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is one of the keystone pathogenic bacteria of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial effects and molecular mechanisms of trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), a safe extract from natural plants, on P. gingivalis. Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MIC and MBC) of TC were determined, and scanning and transmission electron microscopies were used to assess the morphological changes. The overall biomass was estimated, and the metabolic activity of biofilms was determined at different TC concentrations. A microarray-based bioinformatics analysis was performed to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms of TC-inhibited P. gingivalis, and significant differences among groups were determined. TC showed an inhibitory effect on the proliferation and survival of planktonic P. gingivalis, of which the MIC and MBC were 39.07 μg/mL and 78.13 μg/mL, respectively. TC also significantly suppressed the formation and metabolic activity of P. gingivalis biofilm. The results of the significant pathways and gene ontology (GO) analyses revealed that TC treatment inhibited two metabolic pathways, accompanied by the downregulation of relative genes of nitrogen metabolism (NrfA, NrfH, and PG_2213) and starch and sucrose metabolism (PG_1681, PG_1682, and PG_1683). Thus, this study confirmed TC to be a natural antimicrobial agent against P. gingivalis and further demonstrated that TC suppressed the microbial activity on P. gingivalis through the disruption of physiological metabolism, which might inhibit the growth and the biofilm formation of P. gingivalis.

Abstract
Essential oils have proven to possess great potential in the field of biomedicine due to their ability to effectively eradicate a diverse range of pathogenic microbes. In this study, the antimicrobial activity of ylang-ylang essential oil (YY-EO) was screened against twelve multidrug-resistant pathogens. The YY-EO was effective up to 536 μg/ml, with the highest inhibition zone in case of S. aureus MMCC21 and Escherichia coli MMCC24. The least effect on both Bacillus cereus MMCC11 and Klebsiella pneumonia MMCC16. The major components of the essential oil were identified using GC-MS analysis. Different gamma irradiation doses against the YY-EO were evaluated as a tool of natural decontamination. Moreover, the antimicrobial assay after irradiation proved no significant changes regarding the antimicrobial activity before and after irradiation of EO at the applied dose. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the EO against the tested pathogens was detected. The possible morphological changes in some of the bacterial and yeast cells at the recognized MIC and 2MIC were detected using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results revealed a notable change in terms of both the microbial cell population and the morphology of the tested bacterial and yeast cells. The cytotoxicity of ylang-ylang EO was evaluated against normal skin tissue culture and showed a potential cytotoxic effect at concentrated doses. These results refer to the importance of YY-EO as a natural antimicrobial agent and the possible application of YY-EO as a surface decontaminant, but they also draw attention to the importance of the EO concentration used in different applications to avoid possible toxic effects. Abstract
The antimicrobial resistance of pathogenic microorganisms against commercial drugs has become a major problem worldwide. This study is the first of its kind to be carried out in Egypt to produce antimicrobial pharmaceuticals from isolated native taxa of the fungal Chaetomium, followed by a chemical investigation of the existing bioactive metabolites. Here, of the 155 clinical specimens in total, 100 pathogenic microbial isolates were found to be multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. The Chaetomium isolates were recovered from different soil samples, and wild host plants collected from Egypt showed strong inhibitory activity against MDR isolates. Chaetomium isolates displayed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against C. albicans, Gram-positive, and Gram-negative bacteria, with inhibition zones of 11.3 to 25.6 mm, 10.4 to 26.0 mm, and 10.5 to 26.5 mm, respectively. As a consecutive result, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of Chaetomium isolates ranged from 3.9 to 62.5 µg/mL. Liquid chromatography combined with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis was performed for selected Chaetomium isolates with the most promising antimicrobial potential against MDR bacteria. The LC-MS/MS analysis of Chaetomium species isolated from cultivated soil at Assuit Governate, Upper Egypt (3), and the host plant Zygophyllum album grown in Wadi El-Arbaein, Saint Katherine, South Sinai (5), revealed the presence of alkaloids as the predominant bioactive metabolites. Most detected bioactive metabolites previously displayed antimicrobial activity, confirming the antibacterial potential of selected isolates. Therefore, the Chaetomium isolates recovered from harsh habitats in Egypt are rich sources of antimicrobial metabolites, which will be a possible solution to the multi-drug resistant bacteria tragedy.

Abstract
Controlling biofilm formation in the oral cavity during orthodontic treatments is crucial. Therefore, antimicrobial surfaces for invisible dental appliances are of interest to both therapists and patients. Here we present a cellulose-based thermoformable material used for invisible braces that can be loaded with essential oils (EOs) having antibacterial and antifungal properties. We hypothesize that this material can absorb and release EOs, thus providing an antimicrobial effect without compromising the safety and mechanical properties necessary for dental invisible braces. Conventional microbiology and isothermal microcalorimetry analyses revealed that the thermoformable material loaded with essential oils significantly delayed the biofilm formation of oral streptococci (S. mutans and S. mitis) under static conditions (p < 0.05) and while simulating saliva flow (p < 0.05). In addition, cytotoxicity tests (ISO 10993-5), revealed that the loaded material is well tolerated by human gingival fibroblasts. Finally, the loading with antibacterial agents did not significantly alter the mechanical properties and stability of the material (initial force (p = 0.916); initial stress (p = 0.465)). Compared to gold-standard clear aligner materials, this material offers a reliable transmission of forces for orthodontic treatments. Moreover, this approach exhibits the potential for acting as an oral drug delivery platform for multiple compounds.

Abstract
Microbial infection is the most common obstacle in the wound healing process, leading to wound healing impairment and complications and ultimately increasing morbidity and mortality. Due to the rising number of pathogens evolving resistance to the existing antibiotics used for wound care, alternative approaches are urgently required. In this study, α-aminophosphonate derivatives as antimicrobial agents were synthesized and incorporated into self-crosslinked tri-component cryogels composed of fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-F), partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-P), and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Initially, the antimicrobial activity of four α-aminophosphonate derivatives against selected skin bacterial species was tested and their minimum inhibitory concentration was determined based on which the most effective compound was loaded into the cryogels. Next, the physical and mechanical properties of cryogels with various blending ratios of PVA-P/PVA-F and fixed amounts of CNFs were assessed, and drug release profiles and biological activities of drug-loaded cryogels were analyzed. Assessment of α-aminophosphonate derivatives showed the highest efficacy of a cinnamaldehyde-based derivative (Cinnam) against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria compared to other derivatives. The physical and mechanical properties of cryogels showed that PVA-P/PVA-F with a 50/50 blending ratio had the highest swelling ratio (1600%), surface area (523 m2 g-1), and compression recoverability (72%) compared to that with other blending ratios. Finally, antimicrobial and biofilm development studies showed that the cryogel loaded with a Cinnam amount of 2 mg (relative to polymer weight) showed the most sustained drug release profile over 75 h and had the highest efficacy against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In conclusion, self-crosslinked tri-component cryogels loaded with the synthesized α-aminophosphonate derivative, having both antimicrobial and anti-biofilm formation properties, can have a significant impact on the management of uprising wound infection.

Abstract
"Medicine food homology" (MFH) is a term with a lengthy history. It refers to the fact that a lot of traditional natural products have both culinary and therapeutic benefits. The antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects of MFH plants and their secondary metabolites have been confirmed by numerous research. A bacterially generated inflammatory illness with a complicated pathophysiology, periodontitis causes the loss of the teeth's supporting tissues. Several MFH plants have recently been shown to have the ability to prevent and treat periodontitis, which is exhibited by blocking the disease's pathogens and the virulence factors that go along with them, lowering the host's inflammatory reactions and halting the loss of alveolar bone. To give a theoretical foundation for the creation of functional foods, oral care products and adjuvant therapies, this review has especially explored the potential medicinal benefit of MFH plants and their secondary metabolites in the prevention and treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract
Periodontal diseases and dental caries are the most common infectious oral diseases impacting oral health globally. Oral cavity health is crucial for enhancing life quality since it serves as the entranceway to general health. The oral microbiome and oral infectious diseases are strongly correlated. Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria have been associated with periodontal diseases. Due to the shortcomings of several antimicrobial medications frequently applied in dentistry, the lack of resources in developing countries, the prevalence of oral inflammatory conditions, and the rise in bacterial antibiotic resistance, there is a need for reliable, efficient, and affordable alternative solutions for the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. Several accessible chemical agents can alter the oral microbiota, although these substances also have unfavorable symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and tooth discoloration. Natural phytochemicals generated from plants that have historically been used as medicines are categorized as prospective alternatives due to the ongoing quest for substitute products. This review concentrated on phytochemicals or herbal extracts that impact periodontal diseases by decreasing the formation of dental biofilms and plaques, preventing the proliferation of oral pathogens, and inhibiting bacterial adhesion to surfaces. Investigations examining the effectiveness and safety of plant-based medicines have also been presented, including those conducted over the past decade.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is considered the most relevant bacteria during the transition of the non-pathogenic commensal oral microbial community to plaque biofilms that promote the development of dental caries. Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), is a universally natural flavoring and its essential oil has been demonstrated to have good antibacterial effects. However, the specific antibacterial mechanism of oregano essential oil (OEO) against S. mutans is still not completely understood. METHODS In this work, the composition of two different OEOs was determined by GC‒MS. Disk-diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined to assess their antimicrobial effect on S. mutans. The inhibition of acid production, hydrophobicity, biofilm formation and real-time PCR for gtfB/C/D, spaP, gbpB, vicR, relA and brpA mRNA expression by S. mutans were assessed to preliminarily investigate the mechanisms of action. Molecular docking was performed to simulate the interactions with the virulence proteins and active constituents. MTT test using immortalized human keratinocytes cells was also performed to investigate cytotoxicity. RESULTS Compared with the positive drug Penicillin /streptomycin 100X (DIZ: 34.13 ± 0.85 mm, MIC: 0.78125 μL/mL, MBC: 6.25 μL/mL), the essential oils of Origanum vulgare L. (DIZ: 80 mm, MIC: 0.625μL/mL, MBC:2.5μL/mL) and Origanum heracleoticum L. (DIZ: 39.67 ± 0.81 mm, MIC: 0.625μL/mL, MBC: 1.25μL/mL) could also exhibit similar effects to inhibit the acid production and reduce the hydrophobicity and biofilm formation of S. mutans at 1/2-1MIC concentration. And gene expression of gtfB/C/D, spaP, gbpB, vicR and relA were found to be downregulated. Due to the composition of essential oils from different sources being highly variable, through effective network pharmacology analysis, we found that OEOs contained many effective compounds, like carvacrol and its biosynthetic precursors γ-terpinene and p-cymene, which may directly target several virulence proteins of S. mutans. Besides, no toxic effect was instigated by OEOs at 0.1 μL/mL in the immortalized human keratinocytes cells. CONCLUSION The integrated analysis in the present study suggested that OEO might be a potential antibacterial agent for the prevention of dental caries.

Abstract
The most commonly used vesicular systems in the food industry include liposomes, niosomes, phytosomes, or transfersomes. This review focuses on showing how nano-vesicular carriers (NVCs) amend the properties of bioactive compounds (bioactives), making them suitable for food applications, especially functional foods. In this research, we elaborate on the question of whether bioactive-loaded NVCs affect various food aspects such as their antioxidant capacity, or sensory properties. This review also shows how NVCs improve the long-term release profile of bioactives during storage and at different pH values. Besides, the refinement of digestibility and bioaccessibility of diverse bioactives through NVCs in the gastrointestinal tract is elucidated. NVCs allow for stable vesicle formation (e.g. from anthocyanins) which reduces their cytotoxicity and proliferation of cancer cells, prolongs the release bioactives (e.g. d-limonene) with no critical burst, reduces the biofilm formation capacity of both Gram-positive/negative strains and their biofilm gene expression is down-regulated (in the case of tannic acid), low oxidation (e.g. iron) is endured when exposed to simulated gastric fluid, and unpleasant smell and taste are masked (in case of omega-3 fatty acids). After the incorporation of bioactive-loaded NVCs into food products, their antioxidant capacity is enhanced, maintaining high encapsulation efficiency and enduring pasteurization conditions, and they are not distinguished from control samples in sensory evaluation despite the reverse situation about free bioactives.

Abstract
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important pathogen causing pandemic diseases in marine animals and brings about severe economic losses in aquaculture worldwide. The emergence of multi-drug-resistant V. parahaemolyticus and the prohibition of antibiotics both require the development of new therapeutic agents with alternative action. In this study, the effect of gallnut Galla chinensis water extract (GWE) on V. parahaemolyticus growth and virulence was investigated to determine the potential for its use in disease prevention and treatment in aquaculture. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of GWE against V. parahaemolyticus were identified as 0.49 and 0.98 mg/mL, respectively. Membrane damage in V. parahaemolyticus was further verified through the increase of conductivity and leakage of nucleic acids and proteins. Moreover, GWE caused membrane invaginations and damage in V. parahaemolyticus as observed via scanning electron microscopy. After treatment with GWE, the biofilm formation and the activities of respiratory chain dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase of V. parahaemolyticus were all significantly inhibited. These findings suggest that GWE has the potential to be developed as a supplemental agent to mitigate the infections caused by V. parahaemolyticus in aquaculture.

Abstract
This work had the objectives to (1) evaluate the susceptibility of various Rhipicephalus microplus populations to commercial acaricides, and (2) select commercial acaricides (50-80% effective) and evaluate the effects of binary combinations of the phenylpropanoid (E)-cinnamaldehyde with selected commercial acaricides to control R. microplus under laboratory and field conditions. Using adult immersion tests with 116 populations and 14 commercial acaricides, products showing 50-80% effectiveness (percent control) with the lowest number of active ingredients were selected. Acaricides containing amitraz or chlorfenvinphos were tested in combination with (E)-cinnamaldehyde on a field population (strain CM). We found that (E)-cinnamaldehyde enhanced the activity of both commercial acaricides against R. microplus larvae; however, the enhancement was more accentuated when using amitraz. Experiments combining (E)-cinnamaldehyde + amitraz on unfed larvae and engorged females from another population (strain Gyn) were performed, verifying (E)-cinnamaldehyde enhanced the activity of amitraz. In the field experiment, the application of (E)-cinnamaldehyde appeared toxic to the tick hosts (cattle). We concluded that (E)-cinnamaldehyde enhanced the activity of amitraz against unfed larvae and engorged females of R. microplus; however, in the field test this phenylpropanoid caused intoxication in the cattle. Studies searching for new combinations of compounds from essential oils with amitraz deserve attention, as well as studies to develop formulations using amitraz + (E)-cinnamaldehyde that will be efficient and will not have toxic effects in cattle.

Abstract
Current evidence has suggested that diabetes increases the risk of implanting failure, and therefore, appropriate surface modification of dental implants in patients with diabetes is crucial. TiO2 nanotube (TNT) has an osteogenic nanotopography, and its osteogenic properties can be further improved by loading appropriate drugs. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) has been proven to have osteogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial effects. We fabricated a pH-responsive cinnamaldehyde-TiO2 nanotube coating (TNT-CIN) and hypothesized that this coating will exert osteogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial functions in a simulated diabetes condition. TNT-CIN was constructed by anodic oxidation, hydroxylation, silylation, and Schiff base reaction to bind CIN, and its surface characteristics were determined. Conditions of diabetes and diabetes with a concurrent infection were simulated using 22-mM glucose without and with 1-μg/mL lipopolysaccharide, respectively. The viability and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, polarization and secretion of macrophages, and resistance to Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans were evaluated. CIN was bound to the TNT surface successfully and released better in low pH condition. TNT-CIN showed better osteogenic and anti-inflammatory effects and superior bacterial resistance than TNT in a simulated diabetes condition. These findings indicated that TNT-CIN is a promising, multifunctional surface coating for patients with diabetes needing dental implants. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Due to the potent antibacterial properties of Cinnamomum and its derivatives, particularly cinnamaldehyde, recent studies have used these compounds to inhibit the growth of the most prevalent bacterial and fungal biofilms. By inhibiting flagella protein synthesis and swarming motility, Cinnamomum could suppress bacterial attachment, colonization, and biofilm formation in an early stage. Furthermore, by downregulation of Cyclic di‐guanosine monophosphate (c‐di‐GMP), biofilm-related genes, and quorum sensing, this compound suppresses intercellular adherence and accumulation of bacterial cells in biofilm and inhibits important bacterial virulence factors. In addition, Cinnamomum could lead to preformed biofilm elimination by enhancing membrane permeability and the disruption of membrane integrity. Moreover, this substance suppresses the Candida species adherence to the oral epithelial cells, leading to the cell wall deformities, damage, and leakages of intracellular material that may contribute to the established Candida’s biofilm elimination. Therefore, by inhibiting biofilm maturation and destroying the external structure of biofilm, Cinnamomum could boost antibiotic treatment success in combination therapy. However, Cinnamomum has several disadvantages, such as poor solubility in aqueous solution, instability, and volatility; thus, the use of different drug-delivery systems may resolve these limitations and should be further considered in future investigations. Overall, Cinnamomum could be a promising agent for inhibiting microbial biofilm-associated infection and could be used as a catheter and other medical materials surface coatings to suppress biofilm formation. Nonetheless, further in vitro toxicology analysis and animal experiments are required to confirm the reported molecular antibiofilm effect of Cinnamomum and its derivative components against microbial biofilm.

Abstract
Various inhibitors are produced during the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass that can interfere with the growth of yeast cells and the production of bioethanol. Formic acid is a common weak acid inhibitor present in lignocellulosic hydrolysate that has toxic effects on yeast cells. However, the mechanism of the response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to formic acid is not fully understood. In this study, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to investigate the effects of formic acid treatment on cell metabolites of S. cerevisiae. Treatment with different concentrations of formic acid significantly inhibited the growth of yeast cells, reduced the yield of ethanol, prolonged the cell fermentation cycle, and increased the content of malondialdehyde. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis showed that 55 metabolites were significantly altered in S. cerevisiae after formic acid treatment. The metabolic relevance of these compounds in the response of S. cerevisiae to formic acid stress was investigated. Formic acid can cause oxidative stress, inhibit protein synthesis, and damage DNA in S. cerevisiae, and these are possible reasons for the inhibition of S. cerevisiae cell growth. In addition, the levels of several aromatic amino acids identified in the cells of formic acid-treated yeast were increased; the biosynthesis of nucleotides was slowed, and energy consumption was reduced. These mechanisms may help to improve the tolerance of yeast cells to formic acid. The results described herein highlight our current understanding of the molecular mechanism of the response of S. cerevisiae to formic acid. The study will provide a theoretical basis for research on the tolerance mechanisms of S. cerevisiae.

Abstract
The present study aimed to assess metabolites heterogeneity among four major Cinnamomum species, including true cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and less explored species (C. cassia, C. iners, and C. tamala). UPLC-MS led to the annotation of 74 secondary metabolites belonging to different classes, including phenolic acids, tannins, flavonoids, and lignans. A new proanthocyanidin was identified for the first time in C. tamala, along with several glycosylated flavonoid and dicarboxylic fatty acids reported for the first time in cinnamon. Multivariate data analyses revealed, for cinnamates, an abundance in C. verum versus procyandins, dihydro-coumaroylglycosides, and coumarin in C. cassia. A total of 51 primary metabolites were detected using GC-MS analysis encompassing different classes, viz. sugars, fatty acids, and sugar alcohols, with true cinnamon from Malaysia suggested as a good sugar source for diabetic patients. Glycerol in C. tamala, erythritol in C. iners, and glucose and fructose in C. verum from Malaysia were major metabolites contributing to the discrimination among species.

Abstract
The present study reports for the first time, a novel disinfection method that combines ultrasonication with a natural biocide terpinolene to inhibit tough and opportunistic antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) microorganisms isolated from hospital wastewater treatment plant (HWWTP). The enhancement of the disinfection process was evaluated for the effect of ultrasonication power, operating temperature, and inoculum size. A hybrid methodology combining terpinolene with traditional physico-chemical method of acoustic cavitation delivered efficient disinfection of the secondary effluent of field scale HWWTP, amended with a higher inoculum size of multi-drug-resistant coliform bacteria Enterobactor sp., Citrobacter freundii, and Klebsiella pneumonia. A bacterial load of 6.4 log CFU/mL was completely eliminated in 25 min. The present study also reports that due to the hybrid process, a very small concentration of 0.312 mM (0.25 × Minimum Inhibitory Concentration or MBC) of terpinolene was enough to completely disinfect the multi-drug-resistant coliforms. The leakage of intracellular nucleic acids during the disinfection process suggested disruption of cell membrane as the primary mechanism of disinfection followed by disruption of cellular metabolic function measured by respiratory chain dehydrogenase activity. Moreover, this study is the first to prove that terpinolene remained stable even after the cavitation process, thus revealing possibilities of recycling of the natural compound for wastewater disinfection. The results of the present research suggest that using terpinolene as a bio-additive can efficiently eliminate hazardous multi-drug-resistant bacteria and drastically reduce operational time and cost thus rendering it suitable to replace conventional wastewater disinfection.

Abstract
Nowadays, nanofibers with antimicrobial activity are of great importance due to the widespread antibiotic resistance of many pathogens. Electrospinning is a versatile method of producing ultrathin fibers with desired properties, and this technique can be optimized by controlling parameters such as solution/melt viscosity, feeding rate, and electric field. High viscosity and slow feeding rate cause blockage of the spinneret, while low viscosity and high feeding rate result in fiber discontinuities or droplet formation. The electric field must be properly set because high field strength shortens the solidification time of the fluid streams, while low field strength is unable to form the Taylor cone. Environmental conditions, temperature, and humidity also affect electrospinning. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the development of electrospinning methods and the engineering of electrospun nanofibers for various applications. This review discusses the current research on the use of electrospinning to fabricate composite polymer fibers with antimicrobial properties by incorporating well-defined antimicrobial nanoparticles (silver, titanium dioxide, zinc dioxide, copper oxide, etc.), encapsulating classical therapeutic agents (antibiotics), plant-based bioactive agents (crude extracts, essential oils), and pure compounds (antimicrobial peptides, photosensitizers) in polymer nanofibers with controlled release and anti-degradation protection. The analyzed works prove that the electrospinning process is an effective strategy for the formation of antimicrobial fibers for the biomedicine, pharmacy, and food industry.

Abstract
PURPOSE Drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria have emerged as a global crisis. Therefore, novel antibiotics and novel anti-infection strategies are urgently needed. Current antibiotics remain unsatisfactory due to poor targeting efficiency and poor drug penetration through the bacterial cell wall. Thus, targeted delivery of antibiotics into gram-negative bacteria should be a promising approach. Moreover, gram-negative bacteria can release lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce inflammatory response and septic shock, further increasing the disease burden. Hence, it is also promising to neutralize LPS while delivering antibiotics. This study aims to develop a multifunctional bacteria-targeting liposome that could enhance the delivery of antibiotics and adsorb LPS. METHODS A polymyxin B (PMB)-modified liposomal system (P-Lipo) was developed as novel carrier of cinnamaldehyde (CA) by using a thin-film evaporation method. Liposome morphology, size, zeta potential, stability, entrapment efficiency, and in vitro release were systematically evaluated. The bacteria-targeting effect and LPS-neutralizing capacity of P-Lipo were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The antibacterial effect of CA-loaded P-Lipo was assessed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Ultimately, the therapeutic effect of P-CA-Lipo was investigated in E. coli O157:H7-infected mice. RESULTS P-Lipo was successfully synthesized and encapsulated with CA, which was well characterized. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrated that P-Lipo could efficiently target the E. coli after modification with PMB. Compared with free CA, CA-Lipo, and P-Lipo, P-CA-Lipo exhibited a significantly enhanced inhibitory effect on E. coli and P. aeruginosa. Further analysis demonstrated that P-CA-Lipo improved the bacterial uptake of CA and enhanced its antibacterial effect. It was also confirmed that P-Lipo could neutralize the LPS to avoid the inflammatory responses and inhibit the release of proinflammatory cytokines in both macrophages and mice. Finally, P-CA-Lipo inhibited E. coli-induced skin damage and death in mice and showed good biocompatibility. CONCLUSION The P-Lipo could target E. coli by binding with LPS and enhancing the delivery and internalization of CA. In addition, P-Lipo could adsorb free LPS synergistically, thus promoting the infection management. We believe that this strategy can provide innovative insights into antibacterial agent delivery for the treatment of persistent and severe bacterial infections.

Abstract
AIM Hexanal and geraniol are essential oil components with anti-Quorum Sensing (QS) activity against Pseudomonas fluorescens. This study demonstrated that QS inhibition (QSI) efficacy of hexanal and geraniol combination (HG) was significantly increased compared with their mono-counterparts at the same concentration. METHODS AND RESULTS Tests on P. fluorescens motility, biofilm formation, acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) production, gene expression in vitro, and molecular docking in silico were conducted to evaluate the synergistic effect of hexanal and geraniol on QSI. HG mixture at 0.5 minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) showed a strong synergistic inhibition of biofilm formation (51.8%), motility (60.13%), and extracellular protease activity (58.9%) of P. fluorescens. The synthesis of AHLs, e.g. C8 -HSL and C12 -HSL was inhibited by hexanal, geraniol, and HG; both AHLs are responsible for regulating virulence factors in P. fluorescens. The expression of pcoI and gacA genes regulating AHLs synthetase and sensor kinase was significantly down-regulated by HG (0.29 and 0.38-fold) at 0.5 MIC. Hexenal and HG showed significant inhibition of pcoR and gacS genes expression regulating AHLs receptor protein and response regulator; however, geraniol failed to down-regulate the two genes. Molecular docking in silico also supported these findings. Hexenal inserted into minor groove of pcoI/pcoR DNA fragments to inhibit genes expression. Both hexanal (-31.487 kcal/mol) and geraniol (-25.716 kcal/mol) had a higher binding affinity with PcoI protein than halogenated furanone C30 (-24.829 kcal/mol) as a known competitor of AHLs. Similarly, hexenal and geraniol would also strongly bind to the PcoR protein. CONCLUSIONS It was found that HG at 0.5 MIC would effectively inhibit QS through suppressing pcoR/gacS and gacA/gacS genes expression and therefore, inhibit motility and biofilm formation in P. fluorescens. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The present study indicated that HG at sub-MIC as QS inhibitor could be further developed as a new preservative of agri-food products.

Abstract
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affected 9.3% of adults worldwide in 2019. Its co-occurrence is suspected to increase mortality from COVID-19. The treatment of diabetes is mainly based on the long-term use of pharmacological agents, often expensive and causing unpleasant side effects. There is an alarming increase in the number of pharmaceuticals taken in Europe. The aim of this paper is to concisely collect information concerning the few antidiabetic or hypoglycaemic raw plant materials that are present in the consciousness of Europeans and relatively easily accessible to them on the market and sometimes even grown on European plantations. The following raw materials are discussed in this mini-review: Morus alba L., Cinnamomum zeylanicum J.Presl, Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Phaseolus vulgaris L., Zingiber officinale Rosc., and Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer in terms of scientifically tested antidiabetic activity and the presence of characteristic biologically active compounds and their specific properties, including antioxidant properties. The characteristics of these raw materials are based on in vitro as well as in vivo studies: on animals and in clinical studies. In addition, for each plant, the possibility to use certain morphological elements in the light of EFSA legislation is given.

Abstract
Conducted studies indicate the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases. Moreover, the latest research indicated that cariogenic bacteria may severely influence the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and increase risk of COVID-19 complications. This article aims to review various applications of propolis and pay attention to a healthy diet rich in polyphenols, which may allow the reduction of dental plaque accumulation. A literature review has been conducted from June until November 2021. It showed that propolis could be a useful agent in decreasing the accumulation of dental plaque. Moreover, a diet rich in polyphenols prevents cariogenic bacteria and reduces the accumulation of dental plaque. A reduction of a dental plaque may influence the risk of a severe course of COVID-19. Therefore, propolis and a diet rich in polyphenols may play an important role in prophylaxis of systemic diseases. Recently, it has been proven that oral infection may affect cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, respiratory system, nervous system, as well as may be a risk factor for diabetes mellitus. These aspects should stimulate clinicians to further research about polyphenols.

Abstract
Cinnamomum verum is widely used in traditional medicines, and the different parts of the plant, such as bark, leaves, and flowers, are used for essential oil production. The present study compared the chemical composition of the essential oil of C. verum extracted from the leaves and flowers. In addition, efficacy of these essential oils against the two common pests Sitophilus oryzae and Callosobruchus maculatus was also evaluated. The results indicated the presence of cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, caryophyllene, and linalool in these essential oils, however, at different concentrations. The leaf essential oil was found to be 10-20% more effective as a fumigant against both the pests. Likewise, the leaf essential oil found to repel these pests even at lower concentrations than that of flower essential oil of C. verum. Besides, these essential oils were also effective in controlling the growth of various gram positive and gram negative microbial pathogens and possibly a safeguard for human health. On contrary, both the essential oils were found to be safe for the application on grains, as indicated by their germination potentials. It was also observed that these essential oils do not cause any significant toxicity to guppy fishes, thus confirming their ecological safety for use as a biopesticide.

Abstract
Periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, are inflammatory diseases triggered by pathogenic bacteria that lead to damage of the soft tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Amongst the identified oral periodontopathogenic bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis is able to enhance oral dysbiosis, which is an imbalance in the beneficial commensal and periodontal pathogenic bacteria that induces chronic inflammation. Given the critical role of oral pathogenic bacteria like P. gingivalis in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, local and/or systemic antibacterial therapy has been suggested to treat this disease, especially in its severe or refractory forms. Nevertheless, the majority of the antibacterial agents currently used for the treatment of periodontal diseases are broad-spectrum, which harms beneficial bacterial species that are critical in health, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, contribute in protecting the periodontal tissues to damage and aid in its healing. Thus, the development of more effective and specific antibacterial agents is needed to control oral pathogens in a polymicrobial environment. The strategies for the development of novel antibacterial agents include natural product isolation as well as synthetic and semi-synthetic methodologies. This review presents an overview of the periodontal diseases gingivitis and periodontitis along with current antibacterial treatment options (i.e., classes of antibacterial agents and the mechanism(s) of resistance that hinder their usage) used in periodontal diseases that specifically target oral pathogens such as P. gingivalis. In addition, to help medicinal chemists gain a better understanding of potentially promising scaffolds, this review provides an in-depth coverage of the various families of small molecules that have been investigated as potential anti-P. gingivalis agents, including novel families of compounds, repositioned drugs, as well as natural products.

Abstract
Oral microbial biofilms, directly related to oral diseases, particularly caries and periodontitis, exhibit virulence factors that include acidification of the oral microenvironment and the formation of biofilm enriched with exopolysaccharides, characteristics and common mechanisms that, ultimately, justify the increase in antibiotics resistance. In this line, the search for natural products, mainly obtained through plants, and derived compounds with bioactive potential, endorse unique biological properties in the prevention of colonization, adhesion, and growth of oral bacteria. The present review aims to provide a critical and comprehensive view of the in vitro antibiofilm activity of various medicinal plants, revealing numerous species with antimicrobial properties, among which, twenty-four with biofilm inhibition/reduction percentages greater than 95%. In particular, the essential oils of Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf and Lippia alba (Mill.) seem to be the most promising in fighting microbial biofilm in Streptococcus mutans, given their high capacity to reduce biofilm at low concentrations.

Abstract
Trans-Cinnamaldehyde (TC) is a widely used food additive, known for its sterilization, disinfection, and antiseptic properties. However, its antibacterial mechanism is not completely understood. In this study, quantitative proteomics was performed to investigate differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in Escherichia coli in response to TC treatment. Bioinformatics analysis suggested aldehyde toxicity, acid stress, oxidative stress, interference of carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and protein translation as the bactericidal mechanism. E. coli BW25113ΔyqhD, ΔgldA, ΔbetB, ΔtktB, ΔgadA, ΔgadB, ΔgadC, and Δrmf were used to investigate the functions of DEPs through biochemical methods. The present study revealed that TC exerts its antibacterial effects by inducing the toxicity of its aldehyde group producing acid stress. These findings will contribute to the application of TC in the antibacterial field.

Abstract
Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) has antibacterial properties, but its ability to suppress the formation of multi-species oral biofilms has not been fully elucidated. This study evaluated the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of cinnamon essential oil nanoemulsion (CEON) against oral biofilms formed using a microcosm biofilm model. The biofilms were formed on bovine enamel specimens over a 7-day period, during which all specimens were treated with one of three solutions: 5% CEON (n = 35), 0.5% cocamidopropyl betaine (n = 35), or 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX; n = 35). Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities were determined by the red/green ratios (R/G values) of 7-day-old mature biofilms photographed with quantitative light-induced fluorescence-digital, the number of aciduric bacterial colony-forming units (CFUs) within each biofilm, and the absorbance of bacterial suspensions. One-way and repeated-measures analysis of variance were performed to compare differences among the three solutions. R/G values were lowest in the 0.12% CHX group, but not significantly differ from the 5% CEON group. The number of CFUs and absorbance were lowest in the 5% CEON group. This study showed that nanoemulsified CEO inhibited the maturation of multi-species oral biofilms and the growth of oral microorganisms in biofilms, including aciduric bacteria that cause dental caries.

Abstract
Escherichia coli is responsible for cases of diarrhea around the world, and some studies have shown the benefits of cinnamaldehyde in the treatment of bacterial disease. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of cinnamaldehyde in mice colonized by pathogenic E. coli, as well as to provide more insights into its antimicrobial action mechanism. After determination of minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (MBC) concentrations, the interference of cinnamaldehyde in macromolecular pathways (synthesis of DNA, RNA, protein, and cell wall) was measured by incorporation of radioisotopes. The anti-adhesive properties of cinnamaldehyde towards E. coli 042 were evaluated using human epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells. Intestinal colonization was tested on mice, and the effect of cinnamaldehyde on Tenebrio molitor larvae. Cinnamaldehyde showed MIC and MBC values of 780 μg/mL and 1560 μg/mL, respectively; reduced the adhesion of E. coli 042 on HEp-2 cells; and affected all the synthetic pathways evaluated, suggesting that compost impairs the membrane/cell wall structure leading bacteria to total collapse. No effect on the expression of genes related to the SOS pathway (sulA and dinB1) was observed. The compound did not interfere with cell viability and was not toxic against T. molitor larvae. In addition, cinnamaldehyde-treated mice exhibited lower levels of colonization by E. coli 042 than the untreated group. Therefore, the results show that cinnamaldehyde is effective in treating the pathogenic E. coli strain 042 and confirm it as a promising lead molecule for the development of antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) is one of the most common foodborne pathogens that cause human sickness mostly through the poultry food chain. Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) has excellent antibacterial ability against C. jejuni growth. This study investigated the antibacterial mechanism of CEO against C. jejuni primarily through metabolism, energy metabolism of essential enzymes (AKPase, β-galactosidase, and ATPase), and respiration metabolism. Results showed that the hexose monophosphate pathway (HMP) was inhibited, and that the enzyme activity of G6DPH substantially decreased upon treatment with CEO. Analysis of the effect of CEO on the expression of toxic genes was performed by the real-time PCR (RT-PCR). The expression levels of the toxic genes cadF, ciaB, fliA, and racR under CEO treatment were determined. Casein/CEO nanospheres were further prepared for the effective inhibition of C. jejuni and characterized by particle-size distribution, zeta-potential distribution, fluorescence, TEM, and GC-MS methods. Finally, the efficiency of CEO and casein/CEO nanospheres in terms of antibacterial activity against C. jejuni was verified. The casein/CEO nanospheres displayed high antibacterial activity on duck samples. The population of the test group decreased from 4.30 logCFU/g to 0.86 logCFU/g and 4.30 logCFU/g to 2.46 logCFU/g at 4 °C and at 25 °C for C. jejuni, respectively. Sensory evaluation and texture analysis were also conducted on various duck samples.

Abstract
The theory of cold and hot properties is the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and has been successfully applied to combat human diseases for thousands of years. Although the theory of cold and hot is very important to guide the clinical application of TCMs, this ancient theory remains an enigma for a long time. In recent years, more and more researchers have tried to uncover this ancient theory with the help of modern techniques, and the cold and hot properties of a myriad of TCMs have been studied. However, there is no review of cold and hot properties. In this review, we first briefly introduced the basic theories about cold and hot properties, including how to distinguish between the cold and hot properties of TCMs and the classification and treatment of cold and hot syndromes. Then, focusing on the application of cold and hot properties, we take several important TCMs with cold or hot property as examples to summarize their traditional usage, phytochemistry, and pharmacology. In addition, the mechanisms of thermogenesis and antipyretic effect of these important TCMs, which are related to the cold and hot properties, were summarized. At the end of this review, the perspectives on research strategies and research directions of hot and cold properties were also offered.

Abstract
In our previous study, temporin-GHaR (GHaR) showed potent antimicrobial activity with strong hemolytic toxicity. To overcome its weakness, we designed GHaR6R, GHaR7R, GHaR8R, GHaR9R, and GHaR9W by changing the number of positive charges and the hydrophobic surface of GHaR. With the exception of GHaR7R, the hemolytic toxicity of the derived peptides had been reduced, and the antimicrobial activities remained close to the parent peptide (except for GHaR9R). GHaR6R, GHaR7R, GHaR8R, and GHaR9W exhibited a great bactericidal effect on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), which is one of the main pathogens causing dental caries. According to the membrane permeation and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, these derived peptides targeted to the cell membranes of planktonic bacteria, contributing to the disruption of the membrane integrity and leakage of the intracellular contents. Moreover, they inhibited the formation of biofilms and eradicated the mature biofilms of S. mutans. Compared with GHaR7R, the derived peptides showed less cytotoxicity to human oral epithelial cells (HOECs). The derived peptides are expected to be the molecular templates for designing antibacterial agents to prevent dental caries.

Abstract
Halitosis is a very common condition which may affect up to 30% of the population. In about 90% of the cases, halitosis originates in the mouth due to inadequate plaque control, periodontal disease, dry mouth, faulty restorations, and in particular due to excessive bacterial growth. Oral malodor is mainly caused by a microbial degradation of amino acids into volatile, bad-smelling gases (volatile sulfur compounds - VSCs). Management of oral malodor is directed primarily at managing and reducing the VSC-producing bacteria count as well as masking the odor. Essential oils have been used for this purpose in traditional medicine for centuries. In the present review, data on the antimicrobial activity of essential oils against relevant oral VSC-producing bacteria are compiled and compared. Additionally, other positive aspects of essential oils with regard to oral odor are considered.
