An overview on manufactured nanoparticles in plants: Uptake, translocation, accumulation and phytotoxicity

Sustainable and Biosafe Approach to Control Potato Late Blight Using Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Phytophthora infestans-induced potato late blight is considered the "cancer of the potato crop." In this work, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with ultrahigh specific surface area (786.28 m2/g) were synthesized, which significantly inhibited P. infestans compared with some commercial fungicides. Moreover, MSNs inhibited the growth and reproductive of P. infestans processes, including germination, sporangia infection, and zoospore release. MSNs targeted key biological pathways and induced a stress response in the P. infestans, leading to reactive oxygen species (•O2-, •OH, and 1O2) production and structural damage of sporangia. Pot experiments showed that MSNs are translocated from leaves to roots of potato plants, enhancing physiological and biochemical processes, alleviating drought stress, improving resistance to pathogens, and exhibiting soil microbe-friendly. This study systematically reveals the mechanism of MSNs to weaken the reproduction process of P. infestans and confirm the safety and feasibility of MSNs as a green and sustainable fungicide.

Effectiveness of constructed wetland technology-treated industrial wastewater on the spinach (Spinacia oleracea) health risks and biochar efficiency

In peri-urban areas, use of industrial wastewater for irrigation is a common practice. Industrial wastewater contains cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and other elements that deteriorate food quality and affect human health. Biochar has been proven to remediate heavy metal contaminated soil by reducing their mobility and bioavailability. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of different levels of biochar on spinach growth with low heavy metal concentration and to minimize associated health issues. The experiment lasted two months and the treatments: Control (tap water), untreated and treated industrial wastewater and both in combination with biochar (0.5% and 1%) were applied in completely randomized design. Findings suggested that treated industrial wastewater with 1% biochar resulted in maximum plant height, shoot weight, chlorophyll contents (SPAD value), photosynthetic and transpiration rate. Biochar significantly reduced heavy metal mobility in soil due to its porous structure, high pH, higher CEC, and variety of surface functional groups. The cumulative hazard index (HI), hazard quotient, cancer risk, and total cancer risk (TCR) were calculated using method provided by US-EPA for each metal. All treatments had HI values of < 1, however applying 1% biochar significantly reduced the HI values to 2.00E-01 and 2.88E-01 in adults and children, respectively. TCR for all treatments was < 1, while treated industrial wastewater and biochar (1%) has significantly reduced to 1.55E-02 and 1.91E-03 for adults and children, respectively. Thus, it was determined that irrigation with industrial effluents caused toxicity in vegetables, which had a negative impact on human health. Biochar effectively mitigated metal toxicity in both soil and spinach plants that resulted in reduced health/cancer risk.

Combined dynamic transcriptome and flavonoid metabolome reveal the role of Mo nanoparticles in the nodulation process in soybean

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation can reduce the impact of agriculture on the environment by reducing fertilizer input. The rapid development of nanomaterials in agriculture provides a new prospect for us to improve the biological nitrogen fixation ability of leguminous crops. Molybdenum is an important component of nitrogenase, and the potential application of MoO3NPs in agriculture is largely unexplored. In this study, on the basis of verifying that MoO3NPs can improve the nitrogen fixation ability of soybean, the effects of MoO3NPs on the symbiotic nitrogen fixation process of soybean were investigated by using dynamic transcriptome and targeted metabolome techniques. Here we showed that compared with conventional molybdenum fertilizer, minute concentrations of MoO3NPs (0.01-0.1 mg kg-1) could promote soybean growth and nitrogen fixation efficiency. The nodules number, fresh nodule weight and nitrogenase activity of 0.1 mg kg-1 were increased by 17 %, 14 % and 27 %, and plant nitrogen accumulation increased by 17 %. Compared with conventional molybdenum fertilizer, MoO3NPs had a greater effect on apigenin, kaempferol and other flavonoid, and the expression of nodulation related genes such as ENOD93, F3'H. Based on WGCNA analysis, we identified a core gene GmCHS9 that was positively responsive to molybdenum and was highly expressed during MoO3NPs induced nodulation. MoO3NPs could improve the nitrogen fixation ability of soybean by promoting the secretion of flavonoids and the expression of key genes. This study provided a new perspective for the nano-strengthening strategy of nodules development and flavonoid biosynthesis by molybdenum.

Agricultural nanotechnology for a safe and sustainable future: current status, challenges, and beyond

Nanotechnology, which involves manipulating matter at the atomic and molecular scales to produce structures and devices ranging from 1 to 100 nm, is increasingly being applied in agriculture. Nanoscale materials possess distinct optical, electrochemical, and mechanical properties that enable the smart, targeted delivery of pesticides, fertilizers, and genetic materials to plants, as well as rapid sensing and on-site monitoring of plant health, soil fertility, and water quality in a digital format. This review explores the application of nanotechnology in agriculture, examining the challenges and benefits related to all aspects of crop production, with a particular focus on regulatory issues. Key findings indicate that nanotechnology can improve crop production and reduce the environmental footprint of agriculture through precise input management. However, several critical issues need to be addressed, including the limited knowledge of the long-term environmental impacts associated with agricultural nanotechnology and the ambiguity of current regulations. This underscores the need for further research to elucidate its impact on soil, water, and environmental and human health, to inform evidence-based regulations. © 2024 The Author(s). Polystyrene influence on Pb bioavailability and rhizosphere toxicity: Challenges for ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.) in soil phytoremediation

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals often coexist in soil, however their interactions and effects on the soil-plant system remain largely unclear. In this study, ramie (Boehmeria nivea L.) was exposed to soil contaminated with lead (Pb) and polystyrene (PS) of different sizes, dosages, and surface-charged functional groups. This design aimed to simulate the effects of MPs on phytoremediation. The experimental results revealed that PS exacerbated the damaging effects of Pb on ramie. Compared to the effect of Pb alone, PS-COOH had a greater influence on root vigor, leading to a 15.6 % reduction in the active absorption ratio. Laser scanning confocal microscope showed PS entered the roots. Adsorption/desorption experiments demonstrated that PS had a weaker adsorption capacity for Pb than soil but a greater desorption rate than soil when simulating rhizosphere secretion. Moreover, PS reduced soil pH and increased the reducible state of Pb by 6-12 %. After 100 days of phytoremediation, Pb content in the soil with PS-5 μm was 150 μg g-1 less than that in the soil without PS. These results demonstrated that PS improved Pb bioavailability and enhanced the efficiency of Pb uptake by ramie. The redundancy analysis demonstrated that PS mitigated the toxicity of Pb to rhizosphere microorganisms, potentially via its effects on metal chemical fractions, dehydrogenase activity (S-DHA), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and soil organic matter (SOM). This study indicates that the presence of PS could potentially enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of ramie in Pb-contaminated land by influencing soil microenvironmental properties. This study provides insights into the complex interactions of MPs with soil-plant-microbial systems during metal remediation, thereby enhancing our understanding of their environmental impacts.

Nanomaterials in plant physiology: Main effects in normal and under temperature stress

Global climate change and high population growth rates lead to problems of food security and environmental pollution, which require new effective methods to increase yields and stress tolerance of important crops. Nowadays the question of using artificial chemicals is very relevant in theoretical and practical terms. It is important that such substances in low concentrations protect plants under stress conditions, but at the same time inflict minimal damage on the environment and human health. Nanotechnology, which allows the production of a wide range of nanomaterials (NM), provides novel techniques in this direction. NM include structures less than 100 nm. The review presents data on the methods of NM production, their properties, pathways for arrival in plants and their use in human life. It is shown that NM, due to their unique physical and chemical properties, can cross biological barriers and accumulate in cells of live organisms. The influence of NM on plant organism can be both positive and negative, depending on the NM chemical nature, their size and dose, the object of study, and the environmental conditions. This review provides a comparative analysis of the effect of artificial metal nanoparticles (NPm), the commonly employed NMs in plant physiology, on two important aspects of plant life: photosynthetic apparatus activity and antioxidant system function. According to studies, NM affect not only the functional activity of photosynthetic apparatus, but also structural organization of chloroplats. In addition, the literature analysis reflects the dual action of NM on oxidative processes, and antioxidant status of plants. These facts considerably complicate the ideas about possible mechanisms and further use of NPm in biology. In this regard, data on the effects of NM on plants under abiotic stressors are of great interest. Separate section is devoted to the use of NM as adaptogens that increase plant stress tolerance to unfavorable temperatures. Possible mechanisms of NM effects on plants are discussed, as well as the strategies for their further use in basic science and sustainable agriculture.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) alters its metabolite accumulation to cope with CuO nanoparticles by promoting antioxidant production and carbon metabolism

Copper-based nanoparticles (NPs) are gradually being introduced as sustainable agricultural nanopesticides. However, the effects of NPs on plants requires carefully evaluation to ensure their safe utilization. In this study, leaves of 2-week-old lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) were exposed to copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs, 0 [CK], 100 [T1], and 1000 [T2] mg/L) for 15 days. A significant Cu accumulation (up to 1966 mg/kg) was detected in lettuce leaves. The metabolomics revealed a total of 474 metabolites in lettuce leaves, and clear differences were observed in the metabolite profiles of control and CuO-NPs treated leaves. Generally, phenolic acids and alkaloids, which are important antioxidants, were significantly increased (1.26-4.53 folds) under foliar exposure to NPs; meanwhile, all the significantly affected flavonoids were down-regulated after CuO-NP exposure, indicating these flavonoids were consumed under oxidative stress. Succinic and citric acids, which are key components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, were especially increased under T2, suggesting the energy and carbohydrate metabolisms were enhanced under high-concentration CuO-NP treatment. There was also both up- and down-regulation of fatty acids, suggesting cell membrane fluidity and function responded to CuO-NPs. Galactinol, which is related to galactose metabolism, and xanthosine, which is crucial in purine and caffeine metabolism, were down-regulated under T2, indicating decreased stress resistance and disturbed nucleotide metabolism under the high CuO-NP dose. Moreover, the differentially accumulated metabolites were significantly associated with plant growth and its antioxidant ability. Future work should focus on controlling the overuse or excessive release of NPs into agricultural ecosystems to limit their adverse effects.

Nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture: A double-edged sword

Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing discipline that has the potential to transform the way we approach problems in a variety of fields, including agriculture. The use of nanotechnology in sustainable agriculture has gained popularity in recent years. It has various applications in agriculture, such as the development of nanoscale materials and devices to boost agricultural productivity, enhance food quality and safety, improve the efficiency of water and nutrient usage, and reduce environmental pollution. Nanotechnology has proven to be very beneficial in this field, particularly in the development of nanoscale delivery systems for agrochemicals such as pesticides, fertilizers, and growth regulators. These nanoscale delivery technologies offer various benefits over conventional delivery systems, including better penetration and distribution, enhanced efficacy, and lower environmental impact. Encapsulating agrochemicals in nanoscale particles enables direct delivery to the targeted site in the plant, thereby reducing waste and minimizing off-target effects. Plants are fundamental building blocks of all ecosystems and evaluating the interaction between nanoparticles (NPs) and plants is a crucial aspect of risk assessment. This critical review therefore aims to provide an overview of the latest advances regarding the positive and negative effects of nanotechnology in agriculture. It also explores potential future research directions focused on ensuring the safe utilization of NPs in this field, which could lead to sustainable development. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

An integration of physiology, transcriptomics, and proteomics reveals carbon and nitrogen metabolism responses in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) exposed to titanium dioxide nanoparticles

Nanoparticle (NP) pollution has negative impacts and is a major global environmental problem. However, the molecular response of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) is limited. Herein, the dual effects of TiO2 NPs (0-1000 mg L-1) on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolisms in alfalfa were investigated. The results showed that 500 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs (Ti-500) had the highest phytotoxicity in the C/N metabolizing enzymes; and it significantly increased total soluble sugar, starch, sucrose, and sucrose-phosphate synthase. Furthermore, obvious photosynthesis responses were found in alfalfa exposed to Ti-500. By contrast, 100 mg L-1 TiO2 NPs (Ti-100) enhanced N metabolizing enzymes. RNA-seq analyses showed 4265 and 2121 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in Ti-100 and Ti-500, respectively. A total of 904 and 844 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified in Ti-100 and Ti-500, respectively. Through the physiological, transcriptional, and proteomic analyses, the DEGs and DEPs related to C/N metabolism, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, starch and sucrose metabolism, and C fixation in photosynthetic organisms were observed. Overall, TiO2 NPs at low doses improve photosynthesis and C/N regulation, but high doses can cause toxicity. It is valuable for the safe application of NPs in agriculture.

Carbon Nanodot-Microbe-Plant Nexus in Agroecosystem and Antimicrobial Applications

The intensive applications of nanomaterials in the agroecosystem led to the creation of several environmental problems. More efforts are needed to discover new insights in the nanomaterial-microbe-plant nexus. This relationship has several dimensions, which may include the transport of nanomaterials to different plant organs, the nanotoxicity to soil microbes and plants, and different possible regulations. This review focuses on the challenges and prospects of the nanomaterial-microbe-plant nexus under agroecosystem conditions. The previous nano-forms were selected in this study because of the rare, published articles on such nanomaterials. Under the study's nexus, more insights on the carbon nanodot-microbe-plant nexus were discussed along with the role of the new frontier in nano-tellurium-microbe nexus. Transport of nanomaterials to different plant organs under possible applications, and translocation of these nanoparticles besides their expected nanotoxicity to soil microbes will be also reported in the current study. Nanotoxicity to soil microbes and plants was investigated by taking account of morpho-physiological, molecular, and biochemical concerns. This study highlights the regulations of nanotoxicity with a focus on risk and challenges at the ecological level and their risks to human health, along with the scientific and organizational levels. This study opens many windows in such studies nexus which are needed in the near future.

Effects of particle size on toxicity, bioaccumulation, and translocation of zinc oxide nanoparticles to bok choy (Brassica chinensis L.) in garden soil

The indiscriminate use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in daily life can lead to their release into soil environment. These ZnO NPs can be taken up by crops and translocated to their edible part, potentially causing risks to the ecosystem and human health. In this study, we conducted pot experiments to determine phytotoxicity, bioaccumulation and translocation depending on the size (10 - 30 nm, 80 - 200 nm and 300 nm diameter) and concentration (0, 100, 500 and 1000 mg Zn/kg) of ZnO NPs and Zn ion (Zn2+) in bok choy, a leafy green vegetable crop. After 14 days of exposure, our results showed that large-sized ZnO NPs (i.e., 300 nm) at the highest concentration exhibited greater phytotoxicity, including obstruction of leaf and root weight (42.5 % and 33.8 %, respectively) and reduction of chlorophyll a and b content (50.2 % and 85.2 %, respectively), as well as changes in the activities of oxidative stress responses compared to those of small-sized ZnO NPs, although their translocation ability was relatively lower than that of smaller ones. The translocation factor (TF) values decreased as the size of ZnO NPs increased, with TF values of 0.68 for 10 - 30 nm, 0.55 for 80 - 200 nm, and 0.27 for 300 nm ZnO NPs, all at the highest exposure concentration. Both the results of micro X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) spectrometer and bio-transmission electron microscopy (bio-TEM) showed that the Zn elements were mainly localized at the edges of leaves exposed to small-sized ZnO NPs. However, the Zn elements upon exposure to large-sized ZnO NP were primarily observed in the primary veins of leaves in the μ-XRF data, indicating a limitation in their ability to translocate from roots to leaves. This study not only advances our comprehension of the environmental impact of nanotechnology but also holds considerable implications for the future of sustainable agriculture and food safety.

Nanomaterials in the environment and their pragmatic voyage at various trophic levels in an ecosystem

In the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials (NMs) have a huge credential in advancing the existing follow-ups of analytical and diagnosis techniques, drug designing, agricultural science, electronics, cosmetics, sports, textiles and water purification. However, NMs have also grasped attention of researchers onto their toxicity. In the present review, initially the development of notable NMs such as metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles (NPs), magnetic NPs, carbon-based NMs and quantum dots intended to be commercialized along with their applications are discussed. This is followed by the current scenario of NMs in the environment to widen the outlook on the concentration of NPs in the environmental compartments and the frequency of organism exposed to NPs at varied trophic levels. In order to understand the physiochemical and morphological significance of NPs in exhibiting toxicity, fate of NPs in the environment is briefly deliberated. This is further geared-up to glance in-sightedly on the organisms starting from primary producer to primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer and decomposers encountering NPs in their habitual niche. The state of NPs to which organisms are exposed, mechanism of NP uptake and toxicity, anomalies faced at each trophic level, concentration of NPs that is liable to cause toxicity and, biotransfer of NPs to the next generation and trophic level are detailed. Finally, the future prospects on bioaccumulation and biomagnification of NP-based products are conversed. Thus, the review would be noteworthy in unveiling the significance of NPs in forthcoming years combined with threat towards each organism in an ecosystem.

An assessment of nanotechnology-based interventions for cleaning up toxic heavy metal/metalloid-contaminated agroecosystems: Potentials and issues

Heavy metals (HMs) are among the most dangerous environmental variables for a variety of life forms, including crops. Accumulation of HMs in consumables and their subsequent transmission to the food web are serious concerns for scientific communities and policy makers. The function of essential plant cellular macromolecules is substantially hampered by HMs, which eventually have a detrimental effect on agricultural yield. Among these HMs, three were considered, i.e., arsenic, cadmium, and chromium, in this review, from agro-ecosystem perspective. Compared with conventional plant growth regulators, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) is a relatively recent, successful, and promising method among the many methods employed to address or alleviate the toxicity of HMs. The ability of NPs to reduce HM mobility in soil, reduce HM availability, enhance the ability of the apoplastic barrier to prevent HM translocation inside the plant, strengthen the plant's antioxidant system by significantly enhancing the activities of many enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, and increase the generation of specialized metabolites together support the effectiveness of NPs as stress relievers. In this review article, to assess the efficacy of various NP types in ameliorating HM toxicity in plants, we adopted a 'fusion approach', in which a machine learning-based analysis was used to systematically highlight current research trends based on which an extensive literature survey is planned. A holistic assessment of HMs and NMs was subsequently carried out to highlight the future course of action(s).

Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Assessment of Various Nanoprimings for Boosting Pea Germination and Early Growth in Both Optimal and Drought-Stressed Environments

One of the main climate change-related variables limiting agricultural productivity that ultimately leads to food insecurity appears to be drought. With the use of a recently discovered nanopriming technology, seeds can endure various abiotic challenges. To improve seed quality and initial growth of 8-day-old field pea seedlings (cv. NS Junior) under optimal and artificial drought (PEG-induced) laboratory conditions, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of priming with three different nanomaterials: Nanoplant Ultra (Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mo, and Se), Nanoplant Ca-Si (Ca, Si, B, and Fe), and Nanoplant Sulfur (S). The findings indicate that nanopriming seed treatments have a positive impact on seed quality indicators, early plant growth, and drought resilience in field pea plants established in both optimal and drought-stressed conditions. Nevertheless, all treatments showed a positive effect, but their modes of action varied. Nanoplant Ultra proved to be the most effective under optimal conditions, whereas Nanoplant Ca-Si and Nanoplant Sulfur were the most efficient under drought stress. After a field evaluation, the examined comprehensive nanomaterials may be utilized as priming agents for pea seed priming to boost seed germination, initial plant growth, and crop productivity under various environmental conditions.

Zinc-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles mitigate salinity stress in wheat seedlings through silica-zinc uptake, osmotic balance, and ROS detoxification

Abiotic stresses like salinity and micronutrient deficiency majorly affect wheat productivity. Applying mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSiNPs) as a smart micronutrient delivery system can facilitate better stress management and nutrient delivery. In this purview, we investigated the potential of MSiNPs and Zn-loaded MSiNPs (Zn-MSiNPs) on the growth and physiology of wheat seedlings exposed to salinity stress (200 mM NaCl). Initially, the FESEM, DLS, and BET analysis portrayed nanoparticles' spherical shape, nano-size, and negatively charged mesoporous surface. A sustained release of Zn+2 from Zn-MSiNPs at 30 °C, diffused light, and pH 7 was perceived with a 96.57% release after 10 days. Further, the mitigation of NaCl stress in the wheat seedlings was evaluated with two different concentrations, each of MSiNPs and Zn-MSiNPs (1 g/L and 5 g/L), respectively. A meticulous improvement in the germination and growth of wheat seedlings was observed when treated with both MSiNPs and Zn-MSiNPs. A considerable increase in chlorophyll, total protein, and sugar content was in consort with a substantial decline in MDA, electrolyte leakage, and ROS accumulation, showcasing the nanomaterials' palliating effects. Most importantly, the K+/Na+ ratio in shoots increased significantly by 3.43 and 4.37 folds after being treated with 5 g/L Zn-MSiNPs, compared to their respective control sets (0 and 200 mM NaCl). Therefore, it can be concluded that the Zn-MSiNPs can effectively restrain the effects of salinity stress on wheat seedlings.

Impact of silver nanoparticles on secondary metabolite composition and toxicity in anise (Pimpinella anisum L.) callus culture

BACKGROUND

There are numerous challenges associated with producing desired amounts of secondary metabolites (SMs), which are mostly unique and cannot be chemically synthesized. Many studies indicate that nanoparticles (NPs) can boost the production of SMs. Still, the precise manner in which NPs induce metabolic changes remains unidentified. This study examines the influence of eco-friendly silver NPs (AgNPs) on the chemical makeup and toxicity of Pimpinella anisum L. (anise).

RESULTS

AgNPs were introduced into anise callus cultures at different concentrations (0, 1.0, 5.0, 10, and 20 mg/L). The induced oxidative stress was tracked over intervals of 7, 14, 28, and 35 days. Chemical composition evaluations were carried out on the 35th day. Within the first 14 days, plant stress was evident, though the plant adapted to the stress later on. Notably, the plant showed high tolerance at 1 mg/L and 5 mg/L concentrations despite increased toxicity levels. However, relatively high toxicity levels were identified at 10 and 20 mg/L. The AgNP-induced stress significantly impacted anise SMs, particularly affecting fatty acid content. In the 10 and 20 mg/L AgNP groups, essential metabolites, including palmitic and linoleic acid, showed a significant increase. Polyunsaturated (omega) and monounsaturated fatty acids, vital for the food and pharmaceutical industries, saw substantial growth in the 1 and 5 mg/L AgNP groups. For the first time, vanillyl alcohol and 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid were detected along with various phenolic compounds, such as t-anethole, Salicylic acid, and Thiamazole.

CONCLUSION

AgNPs can function as an elicitor to efficiently generate essential SMs such as omegas and phenolic compounds in anise callus culture. This study explores the application of AgNPs as plant elicitors in anise SM production, offering invaluable insight into potential uses.

Unraveling the impact of nanopollution on plant metabolism and ecosystem dynamics

Nanopollution (NPOs), a burgeoning consequence of the widespread use of nanoparticles (NPs) across diverse industrial and consumer domains, has emerged as a critical environmental issue. While extensive research has scrutinized the repercussions of NPs pollution on ecosystems and human health, scant attention has been directed towards unraveling its implications for plant life. This comprehensive review aims to bridge this gap by delving into the nuanced interplay between NPOs and plant metabolism, encompassing both primary and secondary processes. Our exploration encompasses an in-depth analysis of the intricate mechanisms governing the interaction between plants and NPs. This involves a thorough examination of how physicochemical properties such as size, shape, and surface characteristics influence the uptake and translocation of NPs within plant tissues. The impact of NPOs on primary metabolic processes, including photosynthesis, respiration, nutrient uptake, and water transport. Additionally, this study explored the multifaceted alterations in secondary metabolism, shedding light on the synthesis and modulation of secondary metabolites in response to NPs exposure. In assessing the consequences of NPOs for plant life, we scrutinize the potential implications for plant growth, development, and environmental interactions. The intricate relationships revealed in this review underscore the need for a holistic understanding of the plant-NPs dynamics. As NPs become increasingly prevalent in ecosystems, this investigation establishes a fundamental guide that underscores the importance of additional research to shape sustainable environmental management strategies and address the extensive effects of NPs on the development of plant life and environmental interactions.

Treatment of marble industry wastewater by Brassica napus (L.) under oxalic acid amendment: efficacy as fodder and carcinogenic risk assessment

In the present study, Brassica napus, a food plant, was grown for phytoextraction of selected heavy metals (HMs) from marble industry wastewater (WW) under oxalic acid (OA) amendment. The hydroponic experiment was performed under different combination of WW with OA in complete randomized design. Photosynthetic pigments and growth reduction were observed in plants treated with WW alone amendments. The combination of OA in combination with WW significantly enhanced the growth of plants along with antioxidant enzyme activities compared with WW-treated-only plants. HM stress alone enhanced the hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte leakage, and malondialdehyde contents in plants. OA-treated plants were observed with enhanced accumulation of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) concentrations in the roots and shoots of B. napus. The maximum concentration and accumulation of Cd in root, stem, and leaves was increased by 25%, 30%, and 30%; Cu by 42%, 24%, and 17%; and Pb by 45%, 24%, and 43%, respectively, under OA amendment. Average daily intake and hazard quotient (HQ) were calculated for males, females, and children in two phases of treatments in phytoremediation of metals before and after accumulation into B. napus leaves and stems. HQ of metals in the leaves and stem was < 1 before metal accumulation, whereas > 1 was observed after HM accumulation for all males, females, and children. Similarly, the hazard index of the three study types was found > 1. It was observed that the estimated excess lifetime cancer risk was of grade VII (very high risk), not within the accepted range of 1 × 10-4 to 1 × 10-6. Based on the present study, the increased levels of HMs up to carcinogenicity was observed in the B. napus which is not safe to be consumed later as food.

Plant-nano interactions: A new insight of nano-phytotoxicity

Whether nanoparticles (NPs) are boon or bane for society has been a centre of in-depth debate and key consideration in recent times. Exclusive physicochemical properties like small size, large surface area-to-volume ratio, robust catalytic activity, immense surface energy, magnetism and superior biocompatibility make NPs obligatory in many scientific, biomedical and industrial ventures. Nano-enabled products are newer entrants in the present era. To attenuate environmental stress and maximize crop yields, scientists are tempted to introduce NPs as augmented supplements in agriculture. The feasible approaches for NPs delivery are irrigation, foliar spraying or seed priming. Internalization of excessive NPs to plants endorses negative implications at higher trophic levels via biomagnification. The characteristics of NPs (dimensions, type, solubility, surface charge), applied concentration and duration of exposure are prime factors conferring nanotoxicity in plants. Several reports approved NPs persuaded toxicity can precisely mimic abiotic stress effects. The signature effects of nanotoxicity include poor root outgrowth, biomass reduction, oxidative stress evolution, lipid peroxidation, biomolecular damage, perturbed antioxidants, genotoxicity and nutrient imbalance in plants. NPs stress impels mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascade and urges stress responsive defence gene expression to counteract stress in plants. Exogenous supplementation of nitric oxide (NO), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), phytohormones, and melatonin (ME) is novel strategy to circumvent nanotoxicity. Briefly, this review appraises plants' physio-biochemical responses and adaptation scenarios to endure NPs stress. As NPs stress represents large-scale contaminants, advanced research is indispensable to avert indiscriminate NPs usage for synchronizing nano-security in multinational markets.

Influence of low-cost Thai leucoxene minerals on the growth, bioactive compounds, and antibacterial activities of Chrysanthemum indium L. cuttings in in vitro culture

The effects of low-cost Thai leucoxene mineral (LM) at different concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 mg/L) on the growth and antibacterial properties of Chrysanthemum indium L. cuttings under in vitro were evaluated. The primary chemical composition of LM was approximately 86% titanium dioxide (TiO2), as determined by dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The crystalline structure, shape, and size were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. LM at 40 and 50 mg/L significantly increased plant height, leaf number, node number, and fresh and dry weight. These growth-promoting properties were accompanied by improved chlorophyll and carotenoid contents and antioxidant enzyme activities and reduced malondialdehyde levels. Additionally, LM treatment at 40 and 50 mg/L had positive effects on antibacterial activity, as indicated by the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values. The high levels of phenolic compounds in the plants contributed to the MIC and MBC values. In conclusion, these findings provide evidence for the effectiveness of LM in enhancing the growth of Chrysanthemum plants in in vitro culture and improving their antibacterial abilities.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles influence on plant tolerance to salinity stress: insights into physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses

A slight variation in ecological milieu of plants, like drought, heavy metal toxicity, abrupt changes in temperature, flood, and salt stress disturbs the usual homeostasis or metabolism in plants. Among these stresses, salinity stress is particularly detrimental to the plants, leading to toxic effects and reduce crop productivity. In a saline environment, the accumulation of sodium and chloride ions up to toxic levels significantly correlates with intracellular osmotic pressure, and can result in morphological, physiological, and molecular alterations in plants. Increased soil salinity triggers salt stress signals that activate various cellular-subcellular mechanisms in plants to enable their survival in saline conditions. Plants can adapt saline conditions by maintaining ion homeostasis, activating osmotic stress pathways, modulating phytohormone signaling, regulating cytoskeleton dynamics, and maintaining cell wall integrity. To address ionic toxicity, researchers from diverse disciplines have explored novel approaches to support plant growth and enhance their resilience. One such approach is the application of nanoparticles as a foliar spray or seed priming agents positively improve the crop quality and yield by activating germination enzymes, maintaining reactive oxygen species homeostasis, promoting synthesis of compatible solutes, stimulating antioxidant defense mechanisms, and facilitating the formation of aquaporins in seeds and root cells for efficient water absorption under various abiotic stresses. Thus, the assessment mainly targets to provide an outline of the impact of salinity stress on plant metabolism and the resistance strategies employed by plants. Additionally, the review also summarized recent research efforts exploring the innovative applications of zinc oxide nanoparticles for reducing salt stress at biochemical, physiological, and molecular levels.

Silicon nanoparticles in sustainable agriculture: synthesis, absorption, and plant stress alleviation

Silicon (Si) is a widely recognized beneficial element in plants. With the emergence of nanotechnology in agriculture, silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) demonstrate promising applicability in sustainable agriculture. Particularly, the application of SiNPs has proven to be a high-efficiency and cost-effective strategy for protecting plant against various biotic and abiotic stresses such as insect pests, pathogen diseases, metal stress, drought stress, and salt stress. To date, rapid progress has been made in unveiling the multiple functions and related mechanisms of SiNPs in promoting the sustainability of agricultural production in the recent decade, while a comprehensive summary is still lacking. Here, the review provides an up-to-date overview of the synthesis, uptake and translocation, and application of SiNPs in alleviating stresses aiming for the reasonable usage of SiNPs in nano-enabled agriculture. The major points are listed as following: (1) SiNPs can be synthesized by using physical, chemical, and biological (green synthesis) approaches, while green synthesis using agricultural wastes as raw materials is more suitable for large-scale production and recycling agriculture. (2) The uptake and translocation of SiNPs in plants differs significantly from that of Si, which is determined by plant factors and the properties of SiNPs. (3) Under stressful conditions, SiNPs can regulate plant stress acclimation at morphological, physiological, and molecular levels as growth stimulator; as well as deliver pesticides and plant growth regulating chemicals as nanocarrier, thereby enhancing plant growth and yield. (4) Several key issues deserve further investigation including effective approaches of SiNPs synthesis and modification, molecular basis of SiNPs-induced plant stress resistance, and systematic effects of SiNPs on agricultural ecosystem.

Biospectroscopic fingerprinting phytotoxicity towards environmental monitoring for food security and contaminated site remediation

Human activities have resulted in severe environmental pollution since the industrial revolution. Phytotoxicity-based environmental monitoring is well known due to its sedentary nature, abundance, and sensitivity to environmental changes, which are essential preconditions to avoiding potential environmental and ecological risks. However, conventional morphological and physiological methods for phytotoxicity assessment mainly focus on descriptive determination rather than mechanism analysis and face challenges of labour and time-consumption, lack of standardized protocol and difficulties in data interpretation. Molecular-based tests could reveal the toxicity mechanisms but fail in real-time and in-situ monitoring because of their endpoint manner and destructive operation in collecting cellular components. Herein, we systematically propose and lay out a biospectroscopic tool (e.g., infrared and Raman spectroscopy) coupled with multivariate data analysis as a relatively non-destructive and high-throughput approach to quantitatively measure phytotoxicity levels and qualitatively profile phytotoxicity mechanisms by classifying spectral fingerprints of biomolecules in plant tissues in response to environmental stresses. With established databases and multivariate analysis, this biospectroscopic fingerprinting approach allows ultrafast, in situ and on-site diagnosis of phytotoxicity. Overall, the proposed protocol and validation of biospectroscopic fingerprinting phytotoxicity can distinguish the representative biomarkers and interrogate the relevant mechanisms to quantify the stresses of interest, e.g., environmental pollutants. This state-of-the-art concept and design broaden the knowledge of phytotoxicity assessment, advance novel implementations of phytotoxicity assay, and offer vast potential for long-term field phytotoxicity monitoring trials in situ.

Proteomic insights to decipher nanoparticle uptake, translocation, and intercellular mechanisms in plants

Advent of proteomic techniques has made it possible to identify a broad spectrum of proteins in living systems. Studying the impact of nanoparticle (NP)-mediated plant protein responses is an emerging field. NPs are continuously being released into the environment and directly or indirectly affect plant's biochemistry. Exposure of plants to NPs, especially crops, poses a significant risk to the food chain, leading to changes in underlying metabolic processes. Once absorbed by plants, NPs interact with cellular proteins, thereby inducing changes in plant protein patterns. Based on the reactivity, properties, and translocation of nanoparticles, NPs can interfere with proteins involved in various cellular processes in plants such as energy regulation, redox metabolism, and cytotoxicity. Such interactions of NPs at the subcellular level enhance ROS scavenging activity, especially under stress conditions. Although higher concentrations of NPs induce ROS production and hinder oxidative mechanisms under stress conditions, NPs also mediate metabolic changes from fermentation to normal cellular processes. Although there has been lots of work conducted to understand the different effects of NPs on plants, the knowledge of proteomic responses of plants toward NPs is still very limited. This review has focused on the multi-omic analysis of NP interaction mechanisms with crop plants mainly centering on the proteomic perspective in response to both stress and non-stressed conditions. Furthermore, NP-specific interaction mechanisms with the biological pathways are discussed in detail.

Review on fate, transport, toxicity and health risk of nanoparticles in natural ecosystems: Emerging challenges in the modern age and solutions toward a sustainable environment

In today's era, nanoparticles (NPs) have become an integral part of human life, finding extensive applications in various fields of science, pharmacy, medicine, industry, electronics, and communication. The increasing popularity of NP usage worldwide is a testament to their tremendous potential. However, the widespread deployment of NPs unavoidably leads to their release into the environmental matrices, resulting in persistence in ecosystems and bioaccumulation in organisms. Understanding the environmental behavior of NPs poses a significant challenge due to their nanoscale size. Given the current environmental releases of NPs, known negative consequences, and the limited knowledge available for risk management, comprehending the toxicity of NPs in ecosystems is both awaiting and crucial. The present review aims to unravel the potential environmental influences of nano-scaled materials, and provides in-depth inferences of the current knowledge and understanding in this field. The review comprehensively summarizes the sources, fate, transport, toxicity, health risks, and remediation solutions associated with NP pollution in aquatic and soil ecosystems. Furthermore, it addresses the knowledge gaps and outlines further investigation priorities for the sustainable control of NP pollution in these environments. By gaining a holistic understanding of these aspects, we can work toward ensuring the responsible and sustainable use of NPs in today's fast-growing world.

Nanoparticle elicitation: A promising strategy to modulate the production of bioactive compounds in hairy roots

Hairy root culture is one of the promising biotechnological tools to obtain the stable and sustainable production of specialized metabolites from plants under controlled environment conditions. Various strategies have been adopted to enhance the accumulation of bioactive compounds in hairy roots yet their utilization at the commercial scale is restricted to only a few products. Recently, nanotechnology has been emerged as an active technique that has revolutionized the many sectors in an advantageous way. Elicitation using nanoparticles has been recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing the bioactive compounds of interest in plants. Nanoparticles elicit the activity of defense-related compounds through activation of the specific transcription factors involved in specialized metabolites production. This review discusses the recent progress in using nanoparticles to enhance specialized metabolite biosynthesis using hairy root culture system and the significant achievements in this area of research. Biotic and abiotic elicitors to improve the production of bioactive compounds in hairy roots, different types of nanoparticles as eliciting agents, their properties as dependent on shape, most widely used nanoparticles in plant hairy root systems are described in detail. Further challenges involved in application of nanoparticles, their toxicity in plant cells and risks associated to human health are also envisaged. No doubt, nanoparticle elicitation is a remarkable approach to obtain phytochemicals from hairy roots to be utilized in various sectors including food, medicines, cosmetics or agriculture but it is quite essential to understand the inter-relationships between the nanoparticles and the plant systems in terms of specifics such as type, dosage and time of exposure as well as other important parameters.

A high rain-erosion resistant bio-based nanogel with continuous immunity induction for plant virus inhibition

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is the most widely spread and harmful virus in the world, causing serious economic losses annually. However, the low anti-erosion ability of the pesticides for TMV management make it easy to be washed by the rain, which makes the effective duration of the pesticides shorter. In this paper, a new bio-based nanogel with superior antiviral activity was reported, and its slow-release behavior, rain erosion resistance and the antiviral mechanism was systematically studied. The results determined that the nanogels (Zn2+@ALGNP and Zn2+@ALGNP@PL) exhibited sustained releasing of Zn2+ with a 7 days duration, and the ε-PL coating could enhance the releasing rate of Zn2+. Moreover, Zn2+@ALGNP@PL displayed a lower contact angle, indicating greater adhesion to the leaf surface, and in consequence imposed better resistance to simulate rain erosion than pure Zn2+. Strikingly, Zn2+@ALGNP@PL could inhibit plant virus infection by aggregating the virions and reducing its coat protein stability, as well as inducing the efficient expression of reactive oxygen species, antioxidant enzymes and resistance genes to enhance plant resistance and promote plant growth. Overall, this study had successfully developed a high rain-erosion resistant bio-based nanogel capable of continue to induce resistant plants and promote plant growth.

Integrative effects of phytohormones in the phenolic acids production in Salvia verticillata L. under multi-walled carbon nanotubes and methyl jasmonate elicitation

Salvia verticillata L. is a well-known herb rich in rosmarinic acid (RA) and with therapeutic values. To better understand the possible roles of phytohormones in the production of phenolic acids in S. verticillata, in this work, we investigated some physiological and biochemical responses of the species to methyl jasmonate (MJ) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as two effective elicitors. The leaves were sprayed with aqueous solutions containing 100 mg L-1 MWCNTs and 100 µM MJ and then harvested during interval times of exposure up to 96 h. The level of abscisic acid, as the first effective phytohormone, was altered in the leaves in response to MJ and MWCNTs elicitation (2.26- and 3.06-fold more than the control, respectively), followed by significant increases (P ˂ 0.05) detected in jasmonic acid and salicylic acid contents up to 8 h after exposure. Obtained data revealed that simultaneously with changes in phytohormone profiles, significant (P ˂ 0.05) rises were observed in the content of H2O2 (8.85- and 9.74-folds of control), and the amount of lipid peroxidation (10.18- and 17.01-folds of control) during the initial times after exposure to MJ and MWCNTs, respectively. Later, the content of phenolic acids increased in the elicited leaves due to changes in the transcription levels of key enzymes involved in their biosynthesis pathways, so 2.71- and 11.52-fold enhances observed in the RA content of the leaves after exposure to MJ and MWCNTs, respectively. It is reasonable to conclude that putative linkages between changes in some phytohormone pools lead to the accumulation of phenolic acids in the leaves of S. verticillata under elicitation. Overall, the current findings help us improve our understanding of the signal transduction pathways of the applied stimuli that led to enhanced secondary metabolite production in medicinal plants.

Influence of surface modification and size of lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles on wheat seedlings

In recent years, nanotechnology has found widespread applications in environmental monitoring, medical applications, plant fertilisers, cosmetics and others. Therefore, it is important to study nanomaterials' influence and subsequent risks to the environment and organisms (from production to disposal). Therefore, in the present study, the toxic effects of two surface modifications (poly (ethylene glycol)-neridronate, PEG-Ner and poly (acrylic acid), PAA) in comparison to unmodified, 26 nm- and 52 nm-sized core@shell lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs, NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+@NaYF4) were analysed. Wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L.) were chosen as a model organism since this species is one of the most widely cultivated crops. The influence of UCNPs (at concentrations of 0, 10, 50, and 100 μg/mL) on germination percentage, germination rate and growth was studied based on morphological parameters such as root number, root and hypocotyl length, and root and hypocotyl mass. In addition, an assay based on Evans blue staining was conducted to analyse damaged cell membranes and cell death. The type, size and concentration of UCNPs influenced the growth but not the germination of wheat. 52-nm-sized ligand-free UCNPs and the 26-nm-sized UCNPs/PAA decreased plant growth. Moreover, the ligand-free 26-nm-sized UCNPs interacted with the root cell membranes of seedlings. No significant changes were observable regarding viability (tetrazolium chloride reduction assay), oxidative stress and electrolyte leakage from root cells in plants incubated with ligand-free 26-nm-sized UCNPs. Overall, we have shown that the ligand-free UCNPs (of both sizes) had the strongest toxic effect; PAA-modified UCNPs were toxic only at smaller sizes and PEG-Ner-modified UCNPs had no toxic impact. Therefore, PEG-Ner was identified as the safest surface compound among the UCNPs investigated in the study, which may neutralise the harmful effects of nanoparticles on plants.

Translocation of CdS nanoparticles in maize (Zea mays L.) plant and its effect on metabolic response

Cadmium sulfide nanomaterials are of great concern because of their potential toxicity and unavoidable releases due to multiple commercial applications of nanoparticles (NPs). Commercial NPs act as mediators of damage to plant cells and pose potential toxicity to plants and human health. In the current study, investigated the phytotoxicology, absorption, translocation, antioxidant enzyme activity, and metabolic profiles of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings exposed to different hydroponic treatments for fifteen days. The different concentrations of CdS NPs (3, 15, 30, 50, and 100 mg/L), 0.3 mg/L Cd ions, and unexposed control were performed in treatments. The results indicated that CdS NPs could present phytotoxic effects on seed germination and root elongation. Compared to the control, the CdS NPs dramatically reduced the shoots and root biomass, as well as the shape of the roots. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive mapping confirmed that CdS NPs could penetrate the maize root epidermis and bioaccumulate in the shoots with high concentrations. According to metabolomics studies, exposure to CdS NPs and Cd ions would result in metabolic disruption. Based on the statistical analysis, 290 out of 336 metabolites (86.30%) were obviously inhibited. The findings of this study demonstrated possible risks of emerging potential toxic NPs, and the release of these NPs to environment is a serious concern for agricultural activities.

Effects of microplastics/nanoplastics on Vallisneria natans roots and sediment: Size effect, enzymology, and microbial communities

Microplastics/nanoplastics (MNPs) pollution in different environmental media and its adverse effects on organisms have received increasing attention from researchers. This paper compares the effects of natural concentrations of three different sizes (20 nm, 200 nm, and 2 μm) of MNPs on Vallisneria natans and sediments. MNPs with smaller sizes adhere more readily to V. natans roots, further promoting root elongation. In addition, the larger the particle size of MNPs, the higher the reactive oxygen species level in the roots, and the malondialdehyde level increased accordingly. In the sediment, 20 nm, and 200 nm MNPs increased the activity of related enzymes, including acid phosphatase, urease, and nitrate reductase. In addition, the dehydrogenase content in the treated sediments increased, and the content changes were positively correlated with the size of MNPs. Changes in microorganisms were only observed on the root surface. The addition of MNPs reduced the abundance of Proteobacteria and increased the abundance of Chloroflexi. In addition, at the class level of species composition on the root surface, the abundance of Gammaproteobacteria under the 20 nm, 200 nm, and 2 μm MNP treatments decreased by 21.19%, 16.14%, and 17.03%, respectively, compared with the control group, while the abundance of Anaerolineae increased by 44.63%, 26.31%, and 62.52%, respectively. These findings enhance the understanding of the size effects of MNPs on the roots of submerged plants and sediment.

Insight interactions of engineered nanoparticles with aquatic higher plants for phytoaccumulation, phytotoxicity, and phytoremediation applications: A review

With the growing age of human civilization, industrialization has paced up equally which is followed by the innovation of newer concepts of science and technology. One such example is the invention of engineered nanoparticles and their flagrant use in widespread applications. While ENPs serve their intended purposes, they also disrupt the ecological balance by contaminating pristine aquatic ecosystems. This review encompasses a comprehensive discussion about the potent toxicity of ENPs on aquatic ecosystems, with a particular focus on their impact on aquatic higher plants. The discussion extends to elucidating the fate of ENPs upon release into aquatic environments, covering aspects ranging from morphological and physiological effects to molecular-level phytotoxicity. Furthermore, this level of toxicity has been correlated with the determination of competent plants for the phytoremediation process towards the mitigation of this ecological stress. However, this review further illustrates the path of future research which is yet to be explored. Determination of the genotoxicity level of aquatic higher plants could explain the entire process comprehensively. Moreover, to make it suitable to be used in natural ecosystems phytoremediation potential of co-existing plant species along with the presence of different ENPs need to be evaluated. This literature will undoubtedly offer readers a comprehensive understanding of the stress induced by the irresponsible release of engineered nanoparticles (ENP) into aquatic environments, along with insights into the resilience characteristics of these pristine ecosystems.

Nanotechnology for endorsing abiotic stresses: a review on the role of nanoparticles and nanocompositions

Environmental stresses, including the salt and heavy metals contaminated sites, signify a threat to sustainable crop production. The existence of these stresses has increased in recent years due to human-induced climate change. In view of this, several remediation strategies including nanotechnology have been studied to find more effective approaches for sustaining the environment. Nanoparticles, due to unique physiochemical properties; i.e. high mobility, reactivity, high surface area, and particle morphology, have shown a promising solution to promote sustainable agriculture. Crop plants easily take up nanoparticles, which can penetrate into the cells to play essential roles in growth and metabolic events. In addition, different iron- and carbon-based nanocompositions enhance the removal of metals from the contaminated sites and water; these nanoparticles activate the functional groups that potentially target specific molecules of the metal pollutants to obtain efficient remediation. This review article emphasises the recent advancement in the application of nanotechnology for the remediation of contaminated soils with metal pollutants and mitigating different abiotic stresses. Different implementation barriers are also discussed. Furthermore, we reported the opportunities and research directions to promote sustainable development based on the application of nanotechnology.

Nanoparticles regulate redox metabolism in plants during abiotic stress within hormetic boundaries

Abiotic stress management remains under scrutiny because of the unpredictable nature of climate, which undergoes abrupt alterations. Population pressure, loss of cultivable lands, environmental pollution and other anthropogenic disturbances add to the problem and grossly hinder ongoing management strategies. This has driven increasing effort to find better performing, eco-friendly and reliable alternatives that can contribute to sustainable agricultural practices to manage abiotic stress. Nanotechnology and its implementation in agriculture have emerged as a promising option to cater to the problem of abiotic stress. Induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is an inevitable phenomenon linked to stress. Nanoparticles (NPs) perform dual actions in regulating ROS biology. The bidirectional roles of NPs in modulating ROS generation and/or ROS detoxification is tightly coupled within the hormetic boundaries. Nonetheless, how these NPs control the ROS metabolism within hormetic limits demands extensive investigation. This review focuses on the details of ROS metabolism under normal versus stressed conditions. It shall elaborate on the types, modes and process of uptake and translocation of NPs. The molecular dissection of the role of NPs in controlling transcriptomic expressions and modulating molecular crosstalks with other growth regulators, ions, reactive nitrogen species and other signalling molecules shall also be detailed. Throughout, this review aims to summarise the potential roles and regulation of NPs and consider how they can be used for green synthesis within a sustainable agricultural industry.

Toxicity of polyvinyl chloride microplastics on Brassica rapa

Microplastics (MPs) can pose high risk to living organisms due to their very small sizes. This study selected polyvinyl chloride MPs (PVC-MPs) which experienced up to 1000 h UV light radiation to investigate the influence of PVC-MPs on Brassica rapa growth. The outcomes showed the presence of PVC-MPs inhibited the plants' growth. The stem length, root length, fresh weight and dry weight of plants exposed to PVC-MPs after 30 days reduced by 45.9%, 35.2%, 26.1% and 5.2%, respectively. The chlorophyll, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (CAT) concentrations for plants exposed to PVC-MPs after 30 days increased by 25.9%, 135.7%, 88.7% and 47.1% respectively. It was also observed that PVC-MPs blocked the plants' leaf stomata and even entered plants' bodies. This might lead to PVC-MPs movement within the plants and influence plants' growth. The transcriptomic analysis results indicated that exposure to PVC-MPs up-regulated metabolic pathway of plant hormone signal transduction of the plants and down-regulated pathway network of ribosome. However, the research outcomes also showed that the PVC-MPs' locations in soil (located at the upper layers or at lower layers) and the UV light radiation time did not exert significantly different influences on inhibiting plants' growth. This can be attributed to PVC-MPs' small sizes and not much decomposition under light radiation. These imply that longer light radiation time and different particle sizes should be included into future research in order to further explore photodegraded MPs' toxicity effects on plants.

Phytotoxic impact of bifunctionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-Cit-L-Cys) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) on chronically exposed callus cultures of Populus nigra L

Owing to the unique physicochemical properties and the low manufacturing costs, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained growing interest and their application has expanded considerably in industrial and agricultural sectors. The large-scale production of these nanoparticles inevitably entails their direct or indirect release into the environment, raising some concerns about their hazardous aspects. Callus culture represents an important tool in toxicological studies to evaluate the impact of nanomaterials on plants and their potential environmental risk. In this study, we investigated the chronic phytotoxic effects of different concentrations of novel bifunctionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-Cit-L-Cys) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) on callus culture of Populus nigra L., a pioneer tree species in the riparian ecosystem. Our results showed that AgNPs-Cit-L-Cys were more toxic on poplar calli compared to AgNO3, especially at low concentration (2.5 mg/L), leading to a significant reduction in biomass production, accompanied by a decrease in protein content, a significant increase in both lipid peroxidation level, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) enzymatic activities. In addition, these findings suggested that the harmful activity of AgNPs-Cit-L-Cys might be correlated with their physicochemical properties and not solely attributed to the released Ag+ ions and confirmed that AgNPs-Cit-L-Cys phytoxicity is associated to oxidative stress.

Siddique K, Li B. Nanobiotechnology to advance stress resilience in plants: Current opportunities and challenges

A sustainable and resilient crop production system is essential to meet the global food demands. Traditional chemical-based farming practices have become ineffective due to increased population pressures and extreme climate variations. Recently, nanobiotechnology is considered to be a promising approach for sustainable crop production by improving the targeted nutrient delivery, pest management efficacy, genome editing efficiency, and smart plant sensor implications. This review provides deeper mechanistic insights into the potential applications of engineered nanomaterials for improved crop stress resilience and productivity. We also have discussed the technology readiness level of nano-based strategies to provide a clear picture of our current perspectives of the field. Current challenges and implications in the way of upscaling nanobiotechnology in the crop production are discussed along with the regulatory requirements to mitigate associated risks and facilitate public acceptability in order to develop research objectives that facilitate a sustainable nano-enabled Agri-tech revolution. Conclusively, this review not only highlights the importance of nano-enabled approaches in improving crop health, but also demonstrated their roles to counter global food security concerns.

Nanoparticles as novel elicitors in plant tissue culture applications: Current status and future outlook

Plant tissue culture is the primary, fundamental, and applied aspect of plant biology. It is an indispensable and valuable technique for investigating morphogenesis, embryogenesis, clonal propagation, crop improvements, generation of pathogen-free plants, gene transfer and expression, and the production of secondary metabolites. The extensive use of various nanoparticles (NPs) in fields such as cosmetics, energy, medicine, pharmaceuticals, electronics, agriculture, and biotechnology have demonstrated positive impacts in microbial decontamination, callus differentiation, organogenesis, somatic variations, biotransformation, cryopreservation, and enhanced synthesis of bioactive compounds. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge with regard to the use of nanoparticles in plant tissue culture, with a particular focus on the beneficial outcomes. The positive (beneficial) and negative (toxic) effects of engineered NPs in tissue culture medium, delivery of transgenes, NPs toxicity concerns, safety issues, and potential hazards arising from utilization of nanomaterials in agriculture through plant tissue culture are discussed in detail, along with the future prospects for these applications. In addition, the potential use of novel nanomaterials such as graphene, graphite, dendrimers, quantum dots, and carbon nanotubes as well as unique metal or metalloid NPs are proposed. Further, the potential mechanisms underlying NPs elicitation of tissue culture response in different applications are critically evaluated. The potential of these approaches in plant nanobiotechnology is only now becoming understood and it is clear that the role of these strategies in sustainably increasing crop production to combat global food security and safety in a changing climate will be significant.

A review on toxicity of nanomaterials in agriculture: Current scenario and future prospects

Phytonanotechnology plays a crucial part in the production of good quality and high-yield food. It can also alter the plant's production systems, hence permitting the efficient, controlled and stable release of agrochemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides. An advanced understanding of nanomaterials interaction with plant responses like localization and uptake, etc. could transfigure the production of crops with high disease resistance and efficient nutrients utilization. In agriculture, the use of nanomaterials has gained acceptance due to their wide-range applications. However, their toxicity and bioavailability are the major hurdles for their massive employment. Undoubtedly, nanoparticles positively influence seeds germination, growth and development, stress management and post-harvest handling of vegetables and fruits. These nanoparticles may also cause toxicity in plants through oxidative stress by generation of excessive reactive oxygen species thus affecting the cellular biomolecules and targeting different channels. Nanoparticles have shown to exert various effects on plants that are mainly affected by various attributes such as physicochemical features of nanomaterials, coating materials for nanoparticles, type of plant, growth stages and growth medium for plants. This article discusses the interaction, accretion and toxicity of nanomaterials in plants. The factors inducing nanotoxicity and the mechanisms followed by nanomaterials causing toxicity are also instructed. At the end, detoxification mechanism of plant is also presented.

Recent trends and perspectives in the application of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials for sustainable agriculture

Sustainable ecosystem management leads to the use of eco-friendly agricultural techniques for crop production. One of them is the use of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials and nanoparticles, which have proven to be a valuable option for the improvement of agricultural food systems. Moreover, the biological synthesis of these nanoparticles, from plants, bacteria, and fungi, also contributes to their eco-friendly and sustainable characteristics. Nanoparticles, which vary in size from 1 to 100 nm have a variety of mechanisms that are safer and more efficient than conventional fertilizers. Their usage as fertilizers and insecticides in agriculture is gaining favor in the scientific community to maximize crop output. More studies in this field will increase our understanding of this new technology and its broad acceptance in terms of performance, affordability, and environmental protection, as certain nanoparticles may outperform conventional fertilizers and insecticides. Accordingly, to the information gathered in this review, nanoparticles show remarkable potential for enhancing crop production, improving soil quality, and protecting the environment, however, metal and metal oxide NPs are not widely employed in agriculture. Many features of nanoparticles are yet left over, and it is necessary to uncover them. In this sense, this review article provides an overview of various types of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles used in agriculture, their characterization and synthesis, the recent research on them, and their possible application for the improvement of crop productivity in a sustainable manner.

Multifaceted Role of Nanomaterials in Modulating In Vitro Seed Germination, Plant Morphogenesis, Metabolism and Genetic Engineering

The agricultural practices of breeding, farm management and cultivation have improved production, to a great extent, in order to meet the food demands of a growing population. However, the newer challenges of climate change, global warming, and nutritional quality improvement will have to be addressed under a new scenario. Plant biotechnology has emerged as a reliable tool for enhancing crop yields by protecting plants against insect pests and metabolic engineering through the addition of new genes and, to some extent, nutritional quality improvement. Plant tissue culture techniques have provided ways for the accelerated clonal multiplication of selected varieties with the enhanced production of value-added plant products to increase modern agriculture. The in vitro propagation method has appeared as a pre-eminent approach for the escalated production of healthy plants in relatively shorter durations, also circumventing seasonal effects. However, there are various kinds of factors that directly or indirectly affect the efficiency of in vitro regeneration like the concentration and combination of growth regulators, variety/genotype of the mother plant, explant type, age of seedlings and other nutritional factors, and elicitors. Nanotechnology as one of the latest and most advanced approaches in the material sciences, and can be considered to be very promising for the improvement of crop production. Nanomaterials have various kinds of properties because of their small size, such as an enhanced contact surface area, increased reactivity, stability, chemical composition, etc., which can be employed in plant sciences to alter the potential and performance of plants to improve tissue culture practices. Implementing nanomaterials with in vitro production procedures has been demonstrated to increase the shoot multiplication potential, stress adaptation and yield of plant-based products. However, nanotoxicity and biosafety issues are limitations, but there is evidence that implies the promotion and further exploration of nanoparticles in agriculture production. The incorporation of properly designed nanoparticles with tissue culture programs in a controlled manner can be assumed as a new pathway for sustainable agriculture development. The present review enlists different studies in which treatment with various nanoparticles influenced the growth and biochemical responses of seed germination, as well as the in vitro morphogenesis of many crop species. In addition, many studies suggest that nanoparticles can be useful as elicitors for elevating levels of important secondary metabolites in in vitro cultures. Recent advancements in this field also depict the suitability of nanoparticles as a promising carrier for gene transfer, which show better efficiency than traditional Agrobacterium-mediated delivery. This review comprehensively highlights different in vitro studies that will aid in identifying research gaps and provide future directions for unexplored areas of research in important crop species.

Metabolic Effects of Elicitors on the Biosynthesis of Tropane Alkaloids in Medicinal Plants

Tropane alkaloids (TAs) are large secondary metabolite alkaloids that find extensive applications in the synthesis of antidotes, anesthetics, antiemetics, motion sickness drugs, and antispasmodics. The current production method primarily depends on extraction from medicinal plants of the Solanaceae family. Elicitation, as a highly effective biotechnological approach, offers significant advantages in augmenting the synthesis of secondary metabolites. The advantages include its simplicity of operation, low cost, and reduced risk of contamination. This review focuses on the impact of elicitation on the biosynthesis of TAs from three aspects: single-elicitor treatment, multiple-elicitor treatment, and the combination of elicitation strategy with other strategies. Some potential reasons are also proposed. Plant hormones and growth regulators, such as jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and their derivatives, have been extensively employed in the separate elicitation processes. In recent years, novel elicitors represented by magnetic nanoparticles have emerged as significant factors in the investigation of yield enhancement in TAs. This approach shows promising potential for further development. The current utilization of multi-elicitor treatment is constrained, primarily relying on the combination of only two elicitors for induction. Some of these combinations have been found to exhibit synergistic amplification effects. However, the underlying molecular mechanism responsible for this phenomenon remains largely unknown. The literature concerning the integration of elicitation strategy with other strategies is limited, and several research gaps require further investigation. In conclusion, the impact of various elicitors on the accumulation of TAs is well-documented. However, further research is necessary to effectively implement elicitation strategies in commercial production. This includes the development of stable bioreactors, the elucidation of regulatory mechanisms, and the identification of more potent elicitors.

Silica nanoparticles mediated insect pest management

Silicon is known for mitigating the biotic and abiotic stresses of crop plants. Many studies have proved beneficial effects of bulk silicon against biotic stresses in general and insect pests in particular. However, the beneficial effects of silica nanoparticles in crop plants against insect pests were barely studied and reported. By virtue of its physical and chemical nature, silica nanoparticles offer various advantages over bulk silicon sources for its applications in the field of insect pest management. Silica nanoparticles can act as insecticide for killing target insect pest or it can act as a carrier of insecticide molecule for its sustained release. Silica nanoparticles can improve plant resistance to insect pests and also aid in attracting natural enemies via enhanced volatile compounds emission. Silica nanoparticles are safe to use and eco-friendly in nature in comparison to synthetic pesticides. This review provides insights into the applications of silica nanoparticles in insect pest management along with discussion on its synthesis, side effects and future course of action.

Foliar cadmium uptake, transfer, and redistribution in Chili: A comparison of foliar and root uptake, metabolomic, and contribution

Atmospheric deposition is an essential cadmium (Cd) pollution source in agricultural ecosystems, entering crops via roots and leaves. In this study, atmospherically deposited Cd was simulated using cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS_N), and chili (Capsicum frutescens L.) was used to conduct a comparative foliar and root experiment. Root and foliar uptake significantly increased the Cd content of chili tissues as well as the subcellular Cd content. Scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry showed that Cd that entered the leaves via stomata was fixed in leaf cells, and the rest was mainly through phloem transport to the other organs. In leaf, stem, and root cell walls, Cd signal intensities were 47.4%, 72.2%, and 90.0%, respectively. Foliar Cd uptake significantly downregulated purine metabolism in leaves, whereas root Cd uptake inhibited stilbenoid, diarylheptanoid, and gingerol biosynthesis in roots. Root uptake contributed 90.4% Cd in fruits under simultaneous root and foliar uptake conditions attributed to xylem and phloem involvement in Cd translocation. Moreover, root uptake had a more significant effect on fruit metabolic pathways than foliar uptake. These findings are critical for choosing pollution control technologies and ensuring food security.

Uptake, accumulation, toxicity, and interaction of metallic-based nanoparticles with plants: current challenges and future perspectives

The rapid development of industrialization is causing several fundamental problems in plants due to the interaction between plants and soil contaminated with metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Numerous investigations have been conducted to address the severe toxic effects caused by nanoparticles in the past few decades. Based on the composition, size, concentration, physical and chemical characteristics of metallic NPs, and plant types, it enhances or lessens the plant growth at various developmental stages. Metallic NPs are uptaken by plant roots and translocated toward shoots via vascular system based on composition, size, shape as well as plant anatomy and cause austere phytotoxicity. Herein, we tried to summarize the toxicity induced by the uptake and accumulation of NPs in plants and also we explored the detoxification mechanism of metallic NPs adopted by plants via using different phytohormones, signaling molecules, and phytochelatins. This study was intended to be an unambiguous assessment including current knowledge on NPs uptake, accumulation, and translocation in higher plants. Furthermore, it will also provide sufficient knowledge to the scientific community to understand the metallic NPs-induced inhibitory effects and mechanisms involved within plants.

Formation, behavior, properties and impact of micro- and nanoplastics on agricultural soil ecosystems (A Review)

Micro and nanoplastics (MPs and NPs, respectively) in agricultural soil ecosystems represent a pervasive global environmental concern, posing risks to soil biota, hence soil health and food security. This review provides a comprehensive and current summary of the literature on sources and properties of MNPs in agricultural ecosystems, methodology for the isolation and characterization of MNPs recovered from soil, MNP surrogate materials that mimic the size and properties of soil-borne MNPs, and transport of MNPs through the soil matrix. Furthermore, this review elucidates the impacts and risks of agricultural MNPs on crops and soil microorganisms and fauna. A significant source of MPs in soil is plasticulture, involving the use of mulch films and other plastic-based implements to provide several agronomic benefits for specialty crop production, while other sources of MPs include irrigation water and fertilizer. Long-term studies are needed to address current knowledge gaps of formation, soil surface and subsurface transport, and environmental impacts of MNPs, including for MNPs derived from biodegradable mulch films, which, although ultimately undergoing complete mineralization, will reside in soil for several months. Because of the complexity and variability of agricultural soil ecosystems and the difficulty in recovering MNPs from soil, a deeper understanding is needed for the fundamental relationships between MPs, NPs, soil biota and microbiota, including ecotoxicological effects of MNPs on earthworms, soil-dwelling invertebrates, and beneficial soil microorganisms, and soil geochemical attributes. In addition, the geometry, size distribution, fundamental and chemical properties, and concentration of MNPs contained in soils are required to develop surrogate MNP reference materials that can be used across laboratories for conducting fundamental laboratory studies.

Confocal Microscopy Investigations of Biopolymeric PLGA Nanoparticle Uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana L. Cultured Cells and Plantlet Roots

To date, most endocytosis studies in plant cells have focused on clathrin-dependent endocytosis, while limited evidence is available on clathrin-independent pathways. Since dynamin a is a key protein both in clathrin-mediated endocytosis and in clathrin-independent endocytic processes, this study investigated its role in the uptake of poly-(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs). The experiments were performed on cultured cells and roots of Arabidopsis thaliana. Dynasore was used to inhibit the activity of dynamin-like proteins to investigate whether PLGA NPs enter plant cells through a dynamin-like-dependent or dynamin-like-independent endocytic pathway. Observations were performed by confocal microscopy using a fluorescent probe, coumarin 6, loaded in PLGA NPs. The results showed that both cells and roots of A. thaliana rapidly take up PLGA NPs. Dynasore was administered at different concentrations and exposure times in order to identify the effective ones for inhibitory activity. Treatments with dynasore did not prevent the NPs uptake, as revealed by the presence of fluorescence emission detected in the cytoplasm. At the highest concentration and the longest exposure time to dynasore, the fluorescence of NPs was not visible due to cell death. Thus, the results suggest that, because the NPs' uptake is unaffected by dynasore exposure, NPs can enter cells and roots by following a dynamin-like-independent endocytic pathway.

Combined analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics on the cumulative effect of nano-titanium dioxide on mulberry seedlings

Introduction

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) are among the most widely used inorganic nanomaterials in industry, medicine and food additives. There are increasing concerns regarding their potential risks to plants and the environment. Mulberry trees are widely grown in China due to their high survival rate and ability to aid ecological recovery.

Methods

Herein, the effects of TiO₂ NPs with different concentrations (100, 200, 400 and 800 mg/L) on the growth and physiology of the mulberry tree were systematically evaluated in aspects of physiology, transcriptomics and metabolomics.

Results

Results showed that TiO₂ NPs could be absorbed by the mulberry sapling root system and be transferred to the plant shoot. This results in the destruction of mulberry sapling root and leaf tissue. Furthermore, the number of chloroplasts and their pigment contents were reduced and the homeostasis of metal ions was disrupted. The toxic effects of TiO₂ NPs attenuated the mulberry sapling's stress resistance, the contents of malondialdehyde in 100 mg/L, 200 mg/L 400 mg/L and 800 mg/L treatment groups increased by 87.70%, 91.36%, 96.57% and 192.19% respectively compared with the control group. The transcriptomic data showed that TiO₂ NPs treatment mainly affected the expression of genes related to energy synthesis and transport, protein metabolism, and response to stress. Meanwhile, the results of metabolomics showed that 42 metabolites produced significant differences in mulberry, of which 26 differential metabolites were up-regulated in expression and 16 differential metabolites were down-regulated, mainly including metabolic pathways such as secondary metabolite biosynthesis, citric acid cycle, and tricarboxylic acid cycle, and was not conducive to the seed germination and or growth of the mulberry sapling.

Discussion

This study enriches the understanding of the effects of TiO₂ NPs on plants and provides a reference for the comprehensive scientific assessment of the potential risks of nanomaterials on plants.
