Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity and internalising disorders, including depression and anxiety, often co-occur. There is evidence that familial confounding contributes to the co-occurrence of internalising disorders and obesity in adults. However, its impact on this association among young people is unclear. Our study investigated the extent to which familial factors confound the association between internalising disorders and obesity in adolescents and young adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS We used a matched co-twin design to investigate the impact of confounding by familial factors on associations between internalising symptoms and obesity in a sample of 4018 twins aged 16 to 27 years. RESULTS High levels of internalising symptoms compared to low levels increased the odds of obesity for the whole cohort (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 3.1, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.5, 6.8), and in females (AOR = 4.1, 95% CI 1.5, 11.1), but not in males (AOR = 2.8 95% CI 0.8, 10.0). We found evidence that internalising symptoms were associated with an increased between-pair odds of obesity (AOR 6.2, 95% CI 1.7, 22.8), using the paired analysis but not using a within-pair association, which controls for familial confounding. Sex-stratified analyses indicated high internalising symptoms were associated with increased between-pair odds of obesity for females (AOR 12.9, 95% CI 2.2, 76.8), but this attenuated to the null using within-pair analysis. We found no evidence of between or within-pair associations for males and weak evidence that sex modified the association between internalising symptoms and obesity (likelihood ratio test p = 0.051). CONCLUSIONS Some familial factors shared by twins confound the association between internalising symptoms and obesity in adolescent and young adult females. Internalising symptoms and obesity were not associated for adolescent and young adult males. Therefore, prevention and treatment efforts should especially address familial shared determinants of obesity, particularly targeted at female adolescents and young adults with internalising symptoms and those with a family history of these disorders.

Abstract
Cafeteria diet (CD) model for in-vivo studies mimics the western diet having imbalanced nutritional value, high caloric-density and palatability. Uncontrolled eating leads to the development of childhood obesity, poor self-esteem and depression due to its effects on brain development. Herbal supplements are novel inclusion in the management of obesity and mental well-being. Pterostilbene (PTE) found in blueberries and Pterocarpus marsupium heartwood, is known to prevent obesity in invivo models. Adolescent Swiss albino male mice were fed on CD for 70 days and the development of obesity was assessed by gain in body weight, abdominal circumference. Forced swim and tail suspension test confirmed depression in CD fed mice. Obesity induced depressed (OID) mice were treated with PTE (10, 20, 40 mg/kg), standard antiobesity drug cetilistat (10 mg/kg), antidepressant fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) for 28 days. Post treatment, PTE-treated mice showed reduction in BW and depression-like behavior analysed using paradigms such as sucrose preference, open field, marble burying, and resident intruder test in comparison to the CD group. Insulin resistance, lipid profile, antioxidant enzyme, inflammatory cytokines (NF-κB, IL-6, TNF α) and cortisol levels were mitigated by PTE. It also restored normal cellular architecture of the brain and adipose tissue and increased the Silent mating type information regulation 2 homolog1 (SIRT1), leptin and ghrelin receptors gene expression in the brain. Thus, it can be concluded that PTE might have inhibited OID like behavior in mice via inhibition of IR, modulating neuroinflammation and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction and upregulating SIRT1 mediated leptin-ghrelin signaling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and anxiety and to explore the mediating role of inflammation indicators in this relationship based on the UK Biobank prospective cohort. METHODS This population-based retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 308,352 participants. MetS was defined according to criteria jointly developed by the American Heart Association, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the International Diabetes Federation. Anxiety was defined using ICD-10 codes. Cox proportional risk regression models were used to explore the hazard ratios (HRs) between MetS, components of MetS, number of MetS components, and anxiety. The mediating effect of inflammation on the association between MetS and anxiety was explored using longitudinal mediation analysis. RESULTS A total of 308,352 participants were included in this study. Of these, 9471 (3.071 %) developed anxiety over a mean follow-up of 12.05 years. In the fully adjusted model, MetS increased the risk of anxiety by 13.6 % (HR: 1.136, 95 %CI: 1.085-1.189). All MetS components significantly increased the risk of anxiety, with HRs ranging from 1.066 to 1.165. When MetS was treated as a linear variable, the risk of anxiety increased by 6.5 % per component increment. Age-stratified results showed that the risk of MetS for anxiety was higher among those <55 years (HR: 1.23, 95 %CI: 1.13-1.33) than among those ≥55 years (HR: 1.12, 95 %CI: 1.06-1.18). The mediating effects of platelets, lymphocytes, neutrophils, C-reactive protein, leukocytes, and INFLA scores on the association between MetS and anxiety were significant, with mediating effects of 2.30 %, 7.20 %, 15.9 %, 20.7 %, 22.0 %, and 25.3 %, respectively, and a combined mediating effect of these inflammatory factors was 30.8 % (except for INFLA scores). CONCLUSIONS MetS and its components significantly increased the risk of anxiety, which increased with the number of components. This association may be partially mediated by serum inflammatory indicators, suggesting that MetS may increase the risk of anxiety by elevating the level of chronic inflammation.

Abstract
An unhealthy lifestyle has a critical role in the pathogenesis and course of several chronic disorders. It has been hypothesized that lifestyle may also impact biological systems involved in stress response. A global index of unhealthy lifestyle was calculated based on the cumulative presence of five self-reported lifestyle habits (smoking, excessive alcohol use, drug use, low physical activity and short sleep) in 2783 participants (18-65 years) from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety. The functioning of biological stress systems was based on multiple physiological measures of cortisol, inflammatory cytokines and autonomic cardiac activity. The unhealthy lifestyle index was associated with hyperactivity of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and increased inflammation, indicating that with increasing unhealthy habits, the level of biological stress increases. No association with the autonomic nervous system activity was observed; however, the use of drugs increased parasympathetic cardiac activity and significantly impacted on ANS. Results were not impacted by a recent episode of depression or anxiety disorder. An unhealthy lifestyle may unfavorably impact on biological systems involved in stress response, which may underlie progression of several psychiatric as well as somatic chronic disorders.

Abstract
Physical activity participation is associated with effective stress coping, indicated by decreases in both physiological stress reactivity and perceived stress. Quantifying the effect of physical activity on the diurnal regulation of one key physiological stress indicator, the stress hormone, cortisol, across studies may demonstrate the extent to which physical activity participation is associated with diurnal HPA axis regulation. We meta-analyzed studies examining relations between physical activity participation and indices of HPA axis regulation: the diurnal cortisol slope and the cortisol awakening response. We also examined moderators of the relation. The analysis revealed a small, non-zero negative averaged correlation between physical activity and the diurnal cortisol slope (r = -0.043, 95% CI [-0.080, -0.004]). Examination of sample sociodemographic differences, study design characteristics, cortisol measurement methods, and physical activity variables as moderators revealed few effects on the relation between physical activity and diurnal cortisol slope. We did not observe lower levels of variability in the mean cortisol awakening response at higher levels of physical activity participation, and moderator analyses showed little evidence of reductions in heterogeneity for this effect. We found some evidence of systematic publication bias. Findings suggest higher physical activity is associated with a steeper diurnal cortisol slope. However, the cortisol awakening response did not differ by physical activity level. Future studies testing the physical activity and cortisol regulation association should use standardized physical activity measures, follow guidelines for better quality cortisol sampling collection and analysis, and test relations in large-scale empirical studies to confirm the direction and causality of the effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and depression are the leading causes of disability in the U.S. Using five cycles (2009-2018) of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we examined the cross-sectional association between CVD risk factor burden and depression severity in nonpregnant adults with no history of CVD events. METHODS With at least 3000 participants per cycle, the overall N was 18,175. CVD risk factors were ascertained through self-report, lab tests, or medications. The sum of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and current smoking represented a CVD risk score variable (range: 0-4). Depression severity was assessed using scores on the 9-item patient health questionnaire: 0-9 (none-mild) and 10-27 (moderate-to-severe). Logistic regression models were performed to investigate the association between CVD risk score categories and moderate-to-severe depression. Cycle-specific odds ratios (OR) were meta-analyzed to obtain a pooled OR (95 % CI) (Q-statistic p > 0.05). RESULTS Compared to participants with no CVD risk factors, participants with risk scores of 1, 2, 3, and 4, had 1.28 (0.92-1.77), 2.18 (1.62-2.94), 2.53 (1.86-3.49), 2.97 (1.67-5.31) times higher odds of moderate-to-severe depression, respectively, after adjusting for socio-demographics and antidepressant use (linear trend p < 0.0001). This relationship persisted after additionally adjusting for lifestyle variables. LIMITATIONS NHANES data is cross-sectional and self-reported, thus preventing causal assessments and leading to potential recall bias. CONCLUSIONS Among U.S. adults, CVD risk factor burden was associated with worsened depression symptoms. Integrated mental and physical healthcare services could improve risk stratification among persons with CVD and depression, possibly reducing long-term disability and healthcare costs.

Abstract
Benzodiazepine-receptor agonists (BZRAs), including benzodiazepines (BZDs) and drugs related to BZDs (Z-drugs), are commonly used for anxiety, but often have side effects. We retrospectively investigated the utilization and prescription characteristics of BZRAs for patients with anxiety disorders in a large tertiary care general hospital between 2018 and 2021, based on electronic healthcare records. We also examined the pattern of simultaneous consumption of multiple BZRA drugs, and the diseases coexisting with anxiety that are associated with this. The numbers of patients and BZRA prescriptions increased over the 4 years. Moreover, 7195 prescriptions from 694 patients contained two or more BZRAs, of which 78.08% contained both BZDs and Z-drugs, 19.78% contained multiple BZDs, and 2.14% contained multiple Z-drugs. For anxiety patients with concomitant Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, and dyslipidemia, they were more likely to consume multiple BZRAs simultaneously, whereas patients with concomitant insomnia, depression, hypertension, diabetes, or tumors were less likely to consume multiple BZRAs (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, older patients who consume multiple BZRAs simultaneously may have higher probabilities of long-term drug use. Better interventions supporting standardized BZD utilization may be needed to minimize the side effects of inappropriate BZRA administration.

Abstract
Within competitive sociocultural environments, most Korean workers are likely to shorten their sleep duration during the weekday. Short sleep duration is associated with dyslipidemia; however, studies on the correlation between various sleep patterns and dyslipidemia are still lacking. In hence this study aimed to investigate the association between weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) and dyslipidemia among South Korean workers. Our study used data from the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The analysis covered 4,085 participants, excluding those who were diagnosed with dyslipidemia and not currently participating in economic activities. Weekend CUS was calculated as the absolute difference between self-reported weekday and weekend sleep duration. Dyslipidemia was diagnosed based on the levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides in blood samples collected after 9-12 h of fasting. After adjusting for sociodemographic, economic, health-related, and sleep-related factors, a negative association of weekend CUS with dyslipidemia was observed in male workers (odds ratio: 0.76, 95% confidence interval: 0.61-0.95). Further, workers with total sleep duration of 7-8 h, night workers, and white-collar workers with CUS were at relatively low risk of dyslipidemia compared to the non-CUS group. Less than 2 h of weekend CUS was negatively related to dyslipidemia in Korean workers, especially males. This suggests that sleeping more on weekends for workers who had a lack of sleep during the week can help prevent dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Relationships between the neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and/or the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neuroinflammatory diseases have been reported. Depression is also associated with neuroinflammation. Here, we determined the association between the NLR, PLR, and depressive symptoms. This cross-sectional study is a secondary analysis of the data of the Iwaki Health Promotion Project 2017. We analyzed the characteristics and laboratory data of 1,015 Japanese subjects (597 females, 408 males) including their NLR and PLR values. We assigned the subjects with a Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) score ≥ 16 to the depressive symptoms group. We performed a multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine whether the NLR and/or PLR were associated with depressive symptoms (CES-D ≥ 16). Two hundred subjects (19.7%; 122 [20.4%] females, 78 [19.1%] males) were assigned to the depressive symptoms group. There were significant differences between the non-depressive symptoms and depressive symptoms groups in the NLR [median (25th to 75th percentile): 1.54 (1.24, 1.97) vs. 1.76 (1.32, 2.37), P = 0.005] and the PLR [median (25th to 75th percentile): 123.7 (102.0, 153.9) vs. 136.8 (107.0, 166.5), P = 0.047] in males, but not in females. The multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the NLR was significantly associated with depressive symptoms in males (adjusted odds ratio: per 1 increase, 1.570; 95% confidence interval: 1.120–2.220; P = 0.009). In conclusion, our findings indicate that higher NLR may be associated with depressive symptoms in males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies point out important evidence between anxiety and dyslipdemic disorders in health workers. OBJECTIVE: Our main objective was to estimate the association between anxiety and dyslipidemia in Primary Health Care (PHC) nursing professionals in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: A confirmatory cross-sectional study involving 376 PHC nursing professionals. Data collection occurred through the application of a questionnaire containing sociodemographic, labor and lifestyle issues, and the Beck Inventory for anxiety; to evaluate the lipid profile, the HDL-c, LDL-c, and triglycerides markers were evaluated. Descriptive, bivariate analysis and Logistic Regression were performed. RESULTS: The estimated prevalence of moderate/severe anxiety corresponded to 26.1% and dyslipidemia was 54.8%, with a statistically significant association between both of variables stratified by physical activity (PR = 2.69; 95% CI = 1.87–3.85) and (PR = 1.87; 95% CI = 1.53–2.28). CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive association between anxiety and dyslipidemia in Primary Health Care nursing professionals.

Abstract
Obesity and depression tend to co-occur, and obese patients with chronic low-grade inflammation have a higher risk of developing depression. However, mechanisms explaining these connections have not been fully elucidated. Here, an animal model of comorbid obesity and depression induced by high-fat diet (HFD) combined with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was used, and sucrose preference, open field, elevated plus maze and Morris water maze tests were used to detected depression-and anxiety-like behaviors and spatial memory. The levels of inflammatory cytokines and NF-κB and microglial activation in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were examined in the study. Our results revealed that the comorbidity group exhibited the most severe depression-like behavior. Obesity but unstressed rats had the highest serum lipid levels among groups. The HFD and CUMS alone and combination of them increased levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, which was significantly related to depression-like behaviors. Further, NF-κB protein and mRNA levels and microglial activation in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex significantly increased in stressed, obese and comorbid groups, with animals in comorbid group having the highest NF-κB mRNA levels in the hippocampus and level of NF-κB proteins in the prefrontal cortex, and the highest microglial activation in both brain areas. The study concluded that HFD and CUMS alone and combination induce depression-like symptoms, abnormal serum lipid levels, microglial activation and increased inflammatory cytokines in the brain, effects that are possibly mediated by TLR4-NF-κB signaling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of dynamic changes in metabolic parameters over time on the development of depression has yet to be examined. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between the variability of metabolic parameters and the development of depression using nationally representative data. METHODS We used health examination data provided by the South Korean National Health Insurance System (NHIS) and included those who underwent the examination ≥ 3 times within five years of enrollment, without a previous history of depression (n = 9,058,424). The variability of each metabolic parameter including weight circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels was estimated using variability independent of mean (VIM) indices. High variability was defined as the highest quartile (Q4) of variability. RESULTS Each metabolic parameter with high variability was associated with a higher risk of newly diagnosed depression compared to those with low variability, after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, alcohol drinking, regular exercise, income status, baseline diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. As the number of highly variable metabolic parameters increased, the risk for newly diagnosed depression increased even after adjusting for the aforementioned covariates (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.3 - 1.4 in those with five highly variable parameters compared to those with no highly variable parameter). LIMITATIONS relatively short observation period; no systematic measure of depression severity. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the variability of metabolic parameters is an independent risk factor for depression.

Abstract
Depression is a common disease that seriously endangers the physical and mental health of human beings, and it often coexists with other metabolic disorders such as diabetes and cancer. There have been endless reports on the mechanism, prevention, and cure of comorbidity because of its high incidence and poor prognosis and the increased burden on the family and society. There may be a specific comorbid basis and causal relationship between depression and metabolic diseases. Depression in patients with metabolic disorders can be effectively alleviated through psychotherapy and medication. The timely and effective treatment of depression can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with metabolic disorders, reduce their psychological burden, and promote the effective treatment of metabolic diseases. This study reorganized the research progress on the management of metabolic disorder comorbidity with depression.

Abstract
Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) suffer significant psychological distress, which may activate the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis and further affect their physiological state. They often experience elevated levels of testosterone and triglycerides. Considering reports of psychological distress among women with PCOS, this study aimed to develop a psychosocial intervention to improve their emotional and physical health, particularly in Chinese society. This pilot study employed the Integrative Body-Mind-Spirit (I-BMS) intervention model for women with PCOS in China. After a 2 h health information session, 18 participants were randomly assigned to the I-BMS group (9) or the control group (9). The intervention group received 6 weekly, 3 h I-BMS sessions. Pre- and post-blood tests and psychosocial questionnaires were collected from all participants. Retention to treatment was high with 79.6% treatment adherence gained and an overall average of five sessions completed. Compared with the control group, depression and anxiety symptoms reduced significantly for those in the intervention group (d = -1.24, p < 0.05 and d = -1.33, p < 0.01), their health-related quality of life improved significantly (d = 1.02, p < 0.01) both at post-intervention and 3 month follow-up, and their testosterone and triglycerides levels reduced significantly (d = -0.97, p < 0.001 and d = -0.41, p < 0.05) after joining the intervention. The I-BMS model is feasible and appears promising in improving psychological health, and reducing testosterone and triglyceride levels, in women with PCOS in China. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Elevated serum triglyceride levels are a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. A number of studies have demonstrated a positive association between psychological stress and serum triglyceride levels. However, there is limited evidence regarding the impact of stressful life events (SLEs) on serum triglyceride levels in the healthy population. Therefore, we evaluated the independent association between SLEs and serum triglyceride levels in a middle-aged Korean population. METHODS We analyzed a sample of 2,963 people (aged 30-64 years; 36% men) using baseline data from the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases Etiology Research Center (CMERC) cohort study. The Korean version of the Life Experience Survey questionnaire was used to measure the presence and positive/negative impact of SLEs. Hypertriglyceridemia was defined as a fasting serum triglyceride level of ≥ 150 mg/dL. RESULTS Of the 2,963 participants, 33.1% reported at least 1 SLE over the past 6 months and 24.8% had hypertriglyceridemia. Even after adjusting for potential confounders, the serum triglyceride level was significantly associated with the total number of SLEs in men (3.333 mg/dL per event; p= 0.001), but not in women (0.451 mg/dL per event, p= 0.338). Hypertriglyceridemia was also associated with having 4 or more SLEs with positive effects (odds ratio [OR], 2.57; 95% CI, 1.02 to 6.46) and 4 or more SLEs with negative effects (OR, 1.99; 95% CI, 1.16 to 3.41) in men. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that SLEs may increase the risk of hypertriglyceridemia in middle-aged men.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Obesity and overweight are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD); the results are inconsistent due to confounding variables involved in studies. Furthermore, no well-designed study has been published to investigate the prevalence, risk factors and underlying mechanisms of obesity/overweight in Chinese MDD patients. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of obesity/overweight and related risk factors in first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) patients with MDD in China. METHODS A total of 1718 patients were recruited. Their clinical and anthropometric data, thyroid function and biochemical parameters were collected. All patients were evaluated on the 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, 14-item Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. RESULTS The prevalence of obesity and overweight was 3.73% and 56.00%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that TSH was the only independent risk factor for weight gain in MDD patents. The fitting curve of the relationship between TSH and BMI formed an inverted U-shaped parabola. The ordinal logit mode showed that when TSH<=2.68 was set as a reference, the odd rates of weight increased with the increase of TSH, and the highest rate was 3.929 (95%CI: 2.879-5.361, P<0.0001). LIMITATION Causality cannot be drawn due to cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that overweight is very common among patients with FEDN MDD rather than obesity. TSH is a promising predictor and potential biomarker of high weight in MDD patients, and there is an inverted U-shaped parabolic relationship between TSH and BMI.

Abstract
We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effects of magnesium (Mg) supplementation on the lipid profile in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients. Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Embase databases were searched to infinity until 30 January 2020. Weighted mean differences (WMD) were pooled using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias were reported using standard methods. The pooled analysis of 12 randomized controlled trial s indicated that Mg administration led to significant reduction of serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (p = 0.006). However, our results revealed that Mg supplementation did not have any effect on triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) serum concentrations among T2DM patients in comparison with the control group. Subgroup analysis based on duration of study suggested that more than 12 weeks of Mg supplementation significantly decreased the serum TC levels (p = 0.002). Subgroup analysis comparing the dose of intervention indicated that Mg supplementation less than 300 mg significantly decreased the serum LDL concentrations (p < 0.001), while more than 300 mg of Mg supplementation significantly increased the serum HDL levels (p = 0.026). In a subgroup analysis comparing the type of intervention, it displayed that inorganic Mg supplementation decreased the LDL (p < 0.001) and TC (p = 0.003) levels, while organic Mg supplementation showed no difference. Mg supplementation has a beneficial effect on lowering LDL level in T2DM patients. However, we have to note that any research performed so far is not sufficient for making robust guidelines to use Mg supplementation in clinical practice.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Zhi-zi-chi decoction (ZZCD) is used for treating depression as an effectively traditional Chinese medicine. Until now, studies on pharmacological research of ZZCD have mostly been centered in pharmacokinetic level. Little was known about its pharmacological mechanism of relieving depression. AIM OF THE STUDY This study was to evaluate the effect of ZZCD on relieving depression via behavioral tests, serum metabolomics and signaling target expression analysis on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS The CUMS exposure lasted 7 consecutive weeks. The mice were administrated with ZZCD for the last 3 weeks. Behavioral tests were applied and a serum metabolomics method based on UFLC/Q-TOF-MS with multivariate statistical and global metabolic network analysis was performed to identify relevant metabolites and pathways. Finally, the protein expressions in mouse hippocampi were determined by western blot to verify the metabolomics deduction. RESULTS Behavioral parameters were visibly changed after modeling, while high and medium dosage groups showed status improvement compared to the model group. Seventy six metabolites were identified as potential biomarkers from the metabolomics profiles in C18 and HILIC systems. In addition, 9 significant pathways related to changed biomarkers were conducted. The pathways were closely connected by some key targets, which were significantly reduced in the model group compared with those in control group, while ZZCD treated groups showed corrections after 3-week administration. The results revealed that the anti-depression efficacy of ZZCD might be associated with PKA-CREB-BDNF-TrkB-PSD-95 pathway influenced by metabolic changes, verifying the pathway annotation speculation. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that ZZCD had a positive treatment effect on CUMS depression model mice. Metabolomics results revealed the holistic and interconnected metabolic changes of ZZCD in CUMS mice. The metabolic pathway annotation suggested that the anti-depression mechanism of ZZCD might be related to signaling pathway in brain. PKA-CREB-BDNF-TrkB-PSD-95 signaling expression was a verification and complement to the metabolomics results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advances in antiretroviral therapies have greatly improved the survival of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (PLWH); yet, PLWH have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease than those without HIV. While numerous genetic loci have been linked to cardiometabolic risk in the general population, genetic predictors of the excessive risk in PLWH are largely unknown. METHODS We screened for common and HIV-specific genetic variants associated with variation in lipid levels in 6284 PLWH (3095 European Americans [EA] and 3189 African Americans [AA]), from the Centers for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems cohort. Genetic hits found exclusively in the PLWH cohort were tested for association with other traits. We then assessed the predictive value of a series of polygenic risk scores (PRS) recapitulating the genetic burden for lipid levels, type 2 diabetes (T2D), and myocardial infarction (MI) in EA and AA PLWH. RESULTS We confirmed the impact of previously reported lipid-related susceptibility loci in PLWH. Furthermore, we identified PLWH-specific variants in genes involved in immune cell regulation and previously linked to HIV control, body composition, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Moreover, PLWH at the top of European-based PRS for T2D distribution demonstrated a > 2-fold increased risk of T2D compared to the remaining 95% in EA PLWH but to a much lesser degree in AA. Importantly, while PRS for MI was not predictive of MI risk in AA PLWH, multiethnic PRS significantly improved risk stratification for T2D and MI. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that genetic loci involved in the regulation of the immune system and predisposition to risky behaviors contribute to dyslipidemia in the presence of HIV infection. Moreover, we demonstrate the utility of the European-based and multiethnic PRS for stratification of PLWH at a high risk of cardiometabolic diseases who may benefit from preventive therapies.

Abstract
Fundamento O Diabetes Mellitus Tipo 2 (DMT2) é comum nos idosos, que também apresentam um nível elevado de fatores de risco para doenças cardiovasculares (DCVs), tais como dislipidemia. Entretanto, o papel da depressão nos pacientes com DMT2 e sua relação com fatores de risco para DCV são pouco estudados. Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a relação entre sintomas depressivos (SDs) e fatores de risco cardiovascular conhecidos em idosos comunitários portadores de DMT2. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal, no qual foram incluídos 85 idosos comunitários com DMT2. Os SDs foram avaliados através da Escala de Depressão Geriátrica de Yesavage, em versão reduzida (GDS-15). Os seguintes fatores de risco cardiovascular foram avaliados: pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) e diastólica (PAD), glicose plasmática em jejum (GPJ), perfil lipídico (triglicerídeos séricos (TG), colesterol total sérico (CT), colesterol sérico de lipoproteína de baixa densidade (LDL-C) e colesterol sérico de lipoproteína de baixa densidade (HDL-C)) e índice de massa corporal (IMC). A análise de regressão múltipla de Poisson foi utilizada para avaliar a associação entre os SDs e cada fator de risco cardiovascular ajustado por sexo, idade, tempo em atividades físicas moderadas e status funcional. O nível de significância adotado para a análise foi de 5%. Resultados Dentre todos os fatores de risco analisados, apenas o aumento de LDL-C apresentou uma correlação com níveis elevados de SD (RP=1,005; IC95% 1,002-1,008). Foi observada uma associação significativa entre os níveis de HDL-C (RP=0,99; IC95% 0,98-0,99) e a PAS (RP=1,009; IC95% 1,004-1,014). Conclusão Nos idosos com DMT2, a presença de SD foi associada a níveis de LDL-C, HDL-C e PAS, mesmo após o ajuste por sexo, idade, nível de atividade física e capacidade funcional. Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior research has confirmed the efficacy of exercise training (ET) in patients with prediabetes. However, whether the effectiveness of a combination of exercise and psychological intervention (EP) is better than ET alone in prediabetes in terms of physiological function, psychological status and glycometabolism has rarely been investigated. METHODS Forty newly diagnosed prediabetes patients (65.3 ± 8.1 years) took part in the study. Subjects were divided into a pure ET group and a combined EP group. Interventions were conducted in 40-50-min sessions twice weekly for 32 weeks. Physiological, psychological and biochemical indicator measurements were taken after pre-, mid- and post-interventions, respectively. RESULTS The main finding confirmed a significant improvement in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate, high-density lipoprotein, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) from pre- to mid- and post-test differentially in both groups (P < 0.05) by post hoc analyses. The EP group has a greater magnitude of improvement of DBP than the ET group. Significant differences were observed in FPG at mid-intervention and total cholesterol at post-intervention between the ET and EP groups. Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) scores of EP group were significantly less than ET group after post-intervention. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that EP might be a promising method lead to more apparent long-term effects on glycometabolism and psychological status for prediabetes patients. Other domains were improved by both interventions, but no typical pattern could be identified. Its underlying mechanisms need further study, and directions for future research are suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a leading cause of disability, and it has been reported that more than 264 million people worldwide have depression. The causes of depression may be numerous, and physical health has also been linked to depression. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of health behaviours on depression. METHODS This study used the data of 224,868 participants from the Community Health Survey, conducted in 2017. We defined health behaviours by combining three variables: no smoking, not belonging to high-risk drinking group, and walking frequently. Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Logistic regression was used to examine the association between health behaviours and depression. RESULTS Both men and women who did not practise health behaviours were more likely to experience depressive symptoms than those who did (men, odds ratio (OR): 1.48, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.31-1.68; women, OR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.32-1.53). Not walking frequently had the strongest association with depression in men and the risk of depression was the highest in women who smoked. Participants who did not practise any health behaviours were the most likely to have depressive symptoms (men, OR: 1.69, 95% CI: 1.38-2.07; women, OR: 3.08, 95% CI: 2.27-4.19). CONCLUSION Our study found that lack of health behaviours is significantly associated with depression. Furthermore, the most influential factor of health behaviours in depression was different for men and women. It is necessary to manage depression through interventional methods customised to gender characteristics. Additionally, national-level policies are needed to encourage steps to improve personal lifestyles, including practising health behaviours.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE In this study, in order to explore potential depressive biomarkers and potential regulatory targets of KXS on depression, we assessed the effects of Kai-Xin-San (KXS) on lipid metabolism in depressed patients (DPs) and rats exposed to chronic and unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum samples were collected from DPs, DPs with 8 weeks of KXS treatment (KXS) and healthy controls (HCs), and non-targeted lipidomics was used to analyze the effect of KXS on serum lipid metabolites in DPs. Based on UPLC-Q-TOF/MS technology, differential metabolites were validated in a large sample size. The potential regulatory network of KXS was analyzed by bioinformatic analysis, and the expressions of proteins in serum were verified using western boltting analysis. Moreover, effects of KXS on serum lipid and lipid metabolism-related hormone levels in CUMS rats were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and enzymatic method. RESULTS We validated that the levels of six serum lipid metabolites (N-Desmethylcitalopram (HMDB14021), PC(14:1(9Z)/24:0) (HMDB07926), PC(P-18:1(11Z)/20:0) (HMDB11281), PC(O-18:0/20:4(8Z,11Z,14Z,17Z)) (HMDB13420), PC(16:0/P-18:0) (HMDB07995) and PC(16:0/P-18:1(11Z)) (HMDB07996)) between HC/DP groups and between DP/KXS groups were significantly different. Among these six metabolites, HMDB07995, HMDB07996, HMDB13420 and HMDB11281 were highly sensitive and specific for depression and KXS treatment by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) including MMP2 and MMP9, apolipoproteins (Apo) including APOA1 and APOC1 were up-regulated and apolipoproteins (Apo) including APOB, APOD and APOE, phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP), Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) were down-regulated in DPs, and KXS treatment could reverse these changes. In CUMS rats, KXS could increase the open-field score, sucrose preference and body weight, and reduce immobility time. Furthermore, KXS increased the serum levels of the above-mentioned six metabolites, reduced serum total cholesterol (TCH), triglyceride (TG) and free fatty acid (FFA) levels and increased the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level in CUMS rats. In addition, leptin and ghrelin were down-regulated by KXS. CONCLUSIONS The results suggested that KXS exerted antidepressant effects by regulating the signaling pathways involved in lipid metabolism disorders. The lipid metabolites might be potential biomarkers of depression and possible targets for KXS-based treatment of depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between waist circumference as a measure of abdominal obesity and brain responses to stress among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS Patients with CAD (N = 151) underwent acute mental stress tasks in conjunction with high-resolution positron emission tomography and radiolabeled water imaging of the brain. Brain responses to mental stress were correlated with waist circumference. RESULTS Waist circumference was positively correlated with increased activation in the right and left frontal lobes (β values ranging from 2.81 to 3.75 in the paracentral, medial, and superior gyri), left temporal lobe, left hippocampal, left amygdala, left uncus, and left anterior and posterior cingulate gyri (β values ranging from 2.93 to 3.55). Waist circumference was also negatively associated with the left and right parietal lobes, right superior temporal gyrus, and right insula and precuneus (β values ranging from 2.82 to 5.20). CONCLUSION Increased brain activation in the brain regions involved in the stress response and autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system during psychological stress may underlie stress-induced overeating and abdominal obesity in patients with CAD.

Abstract
Clinical evidence indicated that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was more effective than docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in depression treatment. However, possible mechanisms remain unclear. Here, a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced model of depression was used to compare EPA and DHA anti-depressant effects. After EPA or DHA feeding, depression-like behavior, brain n-3/n-6 PUFAs profile, serum corticosterone and cholesterol concentration, hippocampal neurotransmitters, microglial and astrocyte related function, as well as neuronal apoptosis and survival signaling pathways were studied. EPA was more effective than DHA to ameliorate CUMS-induced body weight loss, and depression-like behaviors, such as increasing sucrose preference, shortening immobility time and increasing locomotor activity. CUMS-induced corticosterone elevation was reversed by bother fatty acids, while increased cholesterol was only reduced by EPA supplement. Lower hippocampal noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptamine concentrations in CUMS rats were also reversed by both EPA and DHA supplement. However, even though CUMS-induced microglial activation and associated increased IL-1β were inhibited by both EPA and DHA supplement, increased IL-6 and TNF-α levels were only reduced by EPA. Compared to DHA, EPA could improve CUMS-induced suppressive astrocyte biomarkers and associated BDNF-TrkB signaling. Moreover, EPA was more effective than DHA to attenuate CUMS-induced higher hippocampal NGF, GDNF, NF-κB, p38, p75, and bax expressions, but reversed bcl-2 reduction. This study for the first time revealed the mechanisms by which EPA was more powerful than DHA in anti-inflammation, normalizing astrocyte and neurotrophin function and regulating NF-κB, p38 and apoptosis signaling. These findings reveal the different mechanisms of EPA and DHA in clinical depression treatment.

Abstract
Nuestro objetivo fue estudiar las relaciones entre actividad autonómica, ansiedad y depresión de estudiantes de enfermería, siguiendo un diseño correlacional y un muestreo intencional; se aplicaron los inventarios de ansiedad y depresión de Beck, así como el perfil psicofisiológico del estrés. Fueron incluidas 133 personas de primero, tercero y quinto semestre de una universidad de Guanajuato, México. El índice promedio de ansiedad fue de 23.17 (nivel moderado). La media de depresión fue de 7.9 (nivel mínimo). No se encontraron relaciones significativas entre ansiedad y depresión (rs = 0.077, p = 0.380), ni entre estas emociones y el nivel de actividad autonómica (p = 0.05). En el perfil psicofisiológico se encontraron correlaciones entre los índices obtenidos en la primera condición y los de la última (rs = 0.844, p < 0.05). La ansiedad y la depresión son muy prevalentes, pero son necesarios más estudios para clarificar las relaciones que hay entre ellos y la actividad autonómica de estudiantes universitarios.

Abstract
Metabolic disturbances, including lipid metabolism, bone metabolism, and glycometabolism, are common in depression. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs), which are reported to possess antidepressant effect, have also been shown to regulate metabolism. To further clarify the potential link between ω-3 PUFAs and stress-induced metabolic disturbances, metabolic-related parameters including body weight, visceral fat, fatty acid composition and serum parameters, such as serum lipids, free fatty acid (FFA), glucose (GLU), calcium and phosphorus in rats were measured. Moreover, hepatic insulin induced gene (INSIG)/sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP) pathway was also investigated. After 5 weeks of chronic unpredicted mild stress (CUMS) administration, rats were induced to a depressive-like state and exhibited decreased serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), body weight and visceral fat, accompanied by altered C18:2n6c and ω-3/ω-6 PUFAs. Supplement of ω-3 PUFAs showed robust antidepressant effects and has beneficial effects on lipid profile. On the contrary, ω-3 PUFAs deficiency induced the visceral fat accumulation and decreased the serum calcium and phosphorus in stressed rats. Additionally, CUMS significantly increased hepatic expressions of SREBP-cleavage activating protein (SCAP)/SREBP-1 and decreased the expression of INSIG-1. This disturbance of SREBPs system is aggravated by ω-3 PUFAs deficiency and alleviated by ω-3 PUFAs supplementation. This study discloses the novel findings that ω-3 PUFAs deficiency will exacerbate the metabolic disturbances in stressed rats. Furthermore, supplementation of ω-3 PUFAs on individuals with a high risk of depression might be an effective way to prevent metabolic disorders accompanied by depression with the involvement of INSIG/SREBP pathway.

Abstract
SUMMARY BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety disorders (DAD) are the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide. Among the adult population served in basic care, it is estimated that depression affects about 14.3% of these individuals worldwide, and between 21.4% and 31% in Brasil. Anxiety affects up to 33.7% of the population during their lifetimes. OBJECTIVES: estimate the prevalence proportions of DAD among patients in a municipality in Northeast Brasil and study the association between DAD and cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: a cross-sectional study with the medical records of patients from primary care centers in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Pernambuco. Patients aged ≥ 18 years and regularly followed-up were included. Exclusion criteria: a history of traumatic brain injury, alcohol or drug abuse, previous stroke, medical conditions or medications that mimic DAD symptoms. Subjects were divided into two groups depending on the presence or absence of DAD, and cardiovascular risk factors were compared between groups. RESULTS: A total of 1030 subjects were initially included, of whom 215 (20%) were excluded. No-DAD subjects had more history of myocardial infarction and alcoholism. The prevalence of depression was 10.3%, anxiety disorder was 27.1%, and mixed DAD represented 4.5%. There was a significant association between DAD and hypertension (OR = 2.11; 95%CI: 1.16 –3.84; p=0.01), obesity (OR = 4.47; 95%CI: 1.74 –11.46; p=0.002), and hyperlipidemia (OR = 3.88; 95%CI: 1.81-8.3; p<0.001). CONCLUSION: DAD were associated with an increased risk for arterial hypertension, obesity, and hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
Although the high prevalence of anxiety in obesity increasingly emerges as significant risk factor for related severe health complications, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Considering that chronic inflammation is a key component of obesity and is well known to impact brain function and emotional behavior, we hypothesized that it may similarly contribute to the development of obesity-related anxiety. This hypothesis was experimentally tested by measuring whether chronic food restriction, a procedure known to reduce inflammation, or chronic anti-inflammatory treatment with ibuprofen improved anxiety-like behavior and concomitantly decreased peripheral and/or hippocampal inflammation characterizing a model of severe obesity, the db/db mice. In both experiments, reduced anxiety-like behaviors in the open-field and/or elevated plus-maze were selectively associated with decreased hippocampal tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) mRNA expression. Highlighting the causality of both events, chronic central infusion of the TNF-α blocker etanercept was then shown to be sufficient to improve anxiety-like behavior in db/db mice. Lastly, by measuring the impact of ex-vivo etanercept on hippocampal synaptic processes underlying anxiety-like behaviors, we showed that the anxiolytic effect of central TNF-α blockade likely involved modulation of synaptic transmission within the ventral hippocampus. Altogether, these results uphold the role of brain TNF-α in mediating obesity-related anxiety and provide important clues about how it may modulate brain function and behavior. They may therefore help to introduce novel therapeutic strategies to reduce anxiety associated with inflammatory conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study investigated the association between frequency of having breakfast and dyslipidemia in South Korean adults aged 30 or over. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study, including 10,874 participants, was based on the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2013 and 2016. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, we examined the associations between frequency of having breakfast (and other covariates) and dyslipidemia in men and women. RESULTS Dyslipidemia was more common among male participants with lower frequency of having breakfast in a week and was significantly high in "0 times a week" group (OR = 1.42, 95% CI, 1.13-1.78) compared with 5-7 times/week. This trend was observed in those aged 40-59 years, white collar workers, those living with their spouse, and overweight or obese participants among males and in females aged 40-49 and ≥ 60 years. Statistically significant tendency of having dyslipidemia was observed with decreasing frequency of having breakfast in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides in males (LDL-C: p for trend < 0.0001, TG: p for trend = 0.0004), but not in females. CONCLUSION Frequency of having breakfast was associated with reduced dyslipidemia rate. The risk of dyslipidemia with a low frequency of breakfast was particularly observed in males aged 40-59, white collar workers, those living with a spouse, and postmenopausal females aged ≥ 60.

Abstract
The American Heart Association defines mood disorders (MDO) as a tier-II cardiovascular disease risk factor in children. Cross-sectional analysis of overweight/obese children referred to an obesity hypertension clinic revealed 37% had a MDO (defined by clinical diagnosis or Patient Health Questionnaire-9/-A score ≥10), 55% had confirmed hypertension, and 75% left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Children with MDOs were older, had greater measures of adiposity, and had a greater prevalence of hypertension (78%) than those without MDOs (42%; P = .04). Hypertensive children were 2.8 times more likely to have a MDO than those without (52% vs 18%; P = .02). Multivariable logistic regression revealed a statistically significant independent association of MDOs with hypertension (Odds Ratio [OR] 6.3, P = .048), but not LVH (LVMI ≥ 51 g/m2.7 ; OR 1.13, P = .88). Overall, the prevalence of MDOs in this group of overweight/obese children with elevated blood pressure was well above national averages, suggesting that at-risk youth, particularly those with confirmed hypertension, should be regularly screened for MDOs.

Abstract
This narrative review will present and discuss clinical data from 16 cross-sectional and 6 longitudinal studies examining the relationship between body mass index (BMI), symptoms of depression and peripheral inflammation. Our aim is to determine which of obesity and depression contributes best to the peripheral low-grade inflammation frequently associated to both conditions. Studies including a complete evaluation of inflammatory markers are scarce and high levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are the most consistent findings associated with obesity and symptoms of depression. Among the cross-sectional studies, seven studies, including a total of 9421 individuals, pointed to BMI as the major factor associated with systemic low-grade inflammation. However, in four studies, including 16,837 individuals, CRP levels remained associated with the symptoms of depression even after correction for BMI, suggestion that in the absence of overweight or obesity other sources of peripheral inflammation might contribute to presence of depressive symptoms. Additionally, another five studies, including 5569 individuals failed to find an association between depression and peripheral inflammation, reinforcing the heterogeneity of this condition. In the longitudinal data, changes in BMI were associated with a reduction in depressive scores at follow-up, after bariatric surgery or after diet. In four longitudinal studies, high levels of CRP were found to be associated with depression even after adjustment for BMI and weight loss, further corroborating the idea that other sources of peripheral inflammation might contribute to depressive symptoms. Thus it seems that both obesity and depressive symptoms can contribute to peripheral inflammation, and once installed the presence of inflammation can contribute to several behavioral alterations that reinforce the cyclic pattern of co-occurrence observed in patients with obesity and MDD. Future clinical studies should focus on strategic efforts to collect new data and to improve or standardize methods for the evaluation of depression, body composition and a more complete inflammatory profile. These approaches are essential for the development of pharmacological and/or non-pharmacological strategies designed to break this cyclic pattern of co-occurrence.

Abstract
Associations between depression/anxiety and pain are well established, but its directionality is not clear. We examined the associations between temporally previous mental disorders and subsequent self-reported chronic back/neck pain onset, and investigated the variation in the strength of associations according to timing of events during the life course, and according to gender. Data were from population-based household surveys conducted in 19 countries (N = 52,095). Lifetime prevalence and age of onset of 16 mental disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, and the occurrence and age of onset of back/neck pain were assessed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Survival analyses estimated the associations between first onset of mental disorders and subsequent back/neck pain onset. All mental disorders were positively associated with back/neck pain in bivariate analyses; most (12 of 16) remained so after adjusting for psychiatric comorbidity, with a clear dose-response relationship between number of mental disorders and subsequent pain. Early-onset disorders were stronger predictors of pain; when adjusting for psychiatric comorbidity, this remained the case for depression/dysthymia. No gender differences were observed. In conclusion, individuals with mental disorder, beyond depression and anxiety, are at higher risk of developing subsequent back/neck pain, stressing the importance of early detection of mental disorders, and highlight the need of assessing back/neck pain in mental health clinical settings. PERSPECTIVE Previous mental disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition are positively associated with subsequent back/neck pain onset, with a clear dose-response relationship between number of mental disorders and subsequent pain. Earlier-onset mental disorders are stronger predictors of subsequent pain onset, compared with later-onset disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tinnitus is a common disorder that may cause psychological distress and anxiety. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between anxiety disorders (ADs) and tinnitus in a large population. METHOD We conducted a cross-sectional study using the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Study subjects included 14,772 patients with tinnitus and 709,963 people in the general population who sought treatment in 2005. Distributions in ADs, age, sex, and medical comorbidities were compared between groups using chi-squared tests. Multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, and medical comorbidities were used to analyze the association between tinnitus and ADs. RESULTS Prevalence of ADs in tinnitus and general population groups was 3.9% and 1.5%, respectively, and this difference was significant (P<0.001). Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, concussion or head injury, Meniere's disease, sensorineural hearing impairment, renal disease, coronary artery disease, and cerebrovascular disease were significantly more prevalent in the tinnitus group (all P-values<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression model demonstrated that patients with tinnitus were significantly associated with increased risk of ADs (adjusted OR=1.99; 95% CI=1.81-2.19; P<0.001). CONCLUSION Because the risk of ADs was significantly higher in patients with tinnitus than in the general population, physicians should be aware of the importance of psychological factors in tinnitus management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the associations between depression and both coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular risk factors (CVRs) in Korean women. Furthermore, this study sought to determine whether depression was associated with use of healthcare services in women with CAD or CVRs. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 26,335 women who were aged 19 years or older, and who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2014). Associations of prior diagnosis of depression with CAD and CVRs and with nonutilization of healthcare services were investigated. RESULTS Women with depression had a higher prevalence of CAD and CVRs including obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome than those without depression. In addition, depression was significantly associated with nonutilization of healthcare services in women with most CVRs. CONCLUSION Considering the high rate of comorbid depression with CAD or CVRs and the low lvels of health service utilization in depressed patients, screening for common CVRs, such as obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, should be provided for patients with depression in mental health care settings.

Abstract
Overconsumption of dietary fat can elicit impairments in emotional processes and the response to stress. While excess dietary lipids have been shown to alter hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function and promote anxiety-like behaviour, it is not known if such changes rely on elevated body weight and if these effects are specific to the type of dietary fat. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a saturated and a monounsaturated high-fat diet (HFD) on HPA axis function and anxiety-like behaviour in rats. Biochemical, metabolic and behavioural responses were evaluated following eight weeks on one of three diets: (1) a monounsaturated HFD (50%kcal olive oil), (2) a saturated HFD (50%kcal palm oil), or (3) a control low-fat diet. Weight gain was similar across the three diets while visceral fat mass was elevated by the two HFDs. The saturated HFD had specific actions to increase peak plasma levels of corticosterone and tumour-necrosis-factor-alpha and suppress mRNA expression of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors, corticotropin-releasing hormone and 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1 in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. Both HFDs enhanced the corticosterone-suppressing response to dexamethasone administration without affecting the physiological response to a restraint stress and failed to increase anxiety-like behaviour as measured in the elevated-plus maze and open field tests. These findings demonstrate that prolonged intake of saturated fat, without added weight gain, increases CORT and modulates central HPA feedback processes. That saturated HFD failed to affect anxiety-like behaviour can suggest that the anxiogenic effects of prolonged high-fat feeding may rely on more pronounced metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite considerable knowledge regarding the importance of stress in coronary artery disease (CAD) pathogenesis, its underestimation persists in routine clinical practice, in part attributable to lack of a standardized, objective assessment. The current study examined the ability of stress hormones to predict CAD severity and prognosis at basal conditions as well as during and following an exertional stimulus. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty Caucasian subjects with significant coronary artery lesions (≥50%) were included. Within 2 months of coronary angiography, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) on a recumbent ergometer was performed in conjunction with stress echocardiography (SE). At rest, peak and after 3 min of recovery following CPET, plasma levels of cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and NT-pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) were measured by immunoassay sandwich technique, radioimmunoassay, and radioimmunometric technique, respectively. Subjects were subsequently followed a mean of 32 ± 10 months. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Mean ejection fraction was 56.7 ± 9.6%. Subjects with 1-2 stenotic coronary arteries (SCA) demonstrated a significantly lower plasma cortisol levels during CPET compared to those with 3-SCA (p < .05), whereas ACTH and NT-pro-BNP were not significantly different (p > .05). Among CPET, SE, and hormonal parameters, cortisol at rest and during CPET recovery demonstrated the best predictive value in distinguishing between 1-, 2-, and 3-SCA [area under ROC curve 0.75 and 0.77 (SE = 0.11, 0.10; p = .043, .04) for rest and recovery, respectively]. ΔCortisol peak/rest predicted cumulative cardiac events (area under ROC curve 0.75, SE = 0.10, p = .049). CONCLUSIONS Cortisol at rest and following an exercise test holds predictive value for CAD severity and prognosis, further demonstrating a link between stress and unwanted cardiac events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the independent contribution of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to changes in body composition in older adolescents. METHODS Medically healthy 15- to 20-year-olds who were unmedicated or within 1 month of starting an SSRI were prospectively followed. Psychiatric functioning and medication treatment were assessed monthly. Body Mass Index (BMI) was measured every 4 months. Every 8 months, a whole-body dual-energy radiograph absorptiometry scan was obtained to determine lean BMI, fat mass index, and visceral fat mass. Linear mixed effects regression analysis examined associations between MDD, GAD, and SSRI use variables and body composition measures. RESULTS Over 1.51 ± 0.76 years of follow-up, 264 participants contributed 805 observations. After adjusting for age, sex, physical activity, dietary intake, and time in the study, MDD severity was inversely associated, prospectively, with BMI, fat mass index, and lean BMI z scores, whereas cumulative SSRI treatment duration and dose were positively associated with these outcomes. GAD severity and diagnosis were not significantly associated with any body composition outcome. Moreover, citalopram and escitalopram were most strongly associated with the increase in all body composition measures, including visceral fat mass, whereas the associations with fluoxetine were somewhat weaker. Sertraline was not different from no SSRI treatment. CONCLUSIONS Depression severity was associated with a decrease in measures of body composition in older adolescents over a mean of 1.5 years, whereas SSRI treatment was positively associated with these outcomes, with differential effects across treatment groups.

Abstract
Context Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with increased psychological distress, obesity and hyperandrogenism being suggested as key promoters. Objectives To investigate the prevalence of anxiety/depression and their coexistence in women with PCOS/PCOS-related symptoms at ages 31 and 46. The roles of obesity, hyperandrogenism, and awareness of PCOS on psychological distress were also assessed. Design Population-based follow-up. Setting Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 with 15-year follow-up. Participants At age 31, a questionnaire-based screening for oligoamenorrhea (OA) and hirsutism (H): 2188 asymptomatic (controls), 331 OA, 323 H, and 125 OA plus H (PCOS). Follow-up at age 46: 1576 controls, 239 OA, 231 H, and 85 PCOS. Interventions Questionnaire-based screening for anxiety and depression symptoms (Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25) and previously diagnosed/treated depression at ages 31 and 46. Body mass index (BMI), serum testosterone/free androgen index, and awareness of polycystic ovaries/PCOS on psychological distress were also assessed. Main Outcomes Population-based prevalence of anxiety and/or depression in women with PCOS/PCOS-related symptoms at ages 31 and 46. Results Anxiety and/or depression symptoms, their coexistence, and rate of depression were increased at ages 31 and 46 in women with PCOS or isolated H compared with controls. High BMI or hyperandrogenism did not associate with increased anxiety or depression symptoms. The awareness of PCOS was associated with increased anxiety. Conclusions Women with PCOS or isolated H present more often with anxiety and/or depression symptoms and their coexistence compared with controls. High BMI or hyperandrogenism did not provoke psychological distress in PCOS. The awareness of PCOS increased anxiety but did not associate with severe anxiety or depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical inactivity has been identified as a risk factor for depression and, less often, as a long-term consequence of depression. Underexplored is whether similar bi-directional longitudinal relationships are observed for anxiety disorders, particularly in relation to three distinct indicators of activity levels - sports participation, general physical activity and sedentary behavior. METHOD Participants were from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA; N = 2932, 18-65 years old; 57% current anxiety or depressive disorder, 21% remitted disorder, 22% healthy controls). At baseline, 2, 4, and 6 years, participants completed a diagnostic interview and self-report questionnaires assessing psychopathology symptom severity, physical activity indicators, and sociodemographic and health covariates. RESULTS Consistently across assessment waves, people with anxiety and/or depressive disorders had lower sports participation and general physical activity compared to healthy controls. Greater anxiety or depressive symptoms were associated with lower activity according to all three indicators. Over time, a diagnosis or greater symptom severity at one assessment was associated with poorer sports participation and general physical activity 2 years later. In the opposite direction, only low sports participation was associated with greater symptom severity and increased odds of disorder onset 2 years later. Stronger effects were observed for chronicity, with lower activity according to all indicators increasing the odds of disorder chronicity after 2 years. CONCLUSIONS Over time, there seems to a mutually reinforcing, bidirectional relationship between psychopathology and lower physical activity, particularly low sports participation. People with anxiety are as adversely affected as those with depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is associated with the metabolic syndrome (MS). We examined whether metabolic dysregulation predicted the 2-year course of clinical depression. METHOD A total of 285 older persons (⩾60 years) suffering from depressive disorder according to DSM-IV-TR criteria was followed up for 2 years. Severity of depression was assessed with the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) at 6-month intervals. Metabolic syndrome was defined according the National Cholesterol Education Programme (NCEP-ATP III). We applied logistic regression and linear mixed models adjusted for age, sex, years of education, smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, somatic co-morbidity, cognitive functioning and drug use (antidepressants, anti-inflammatory drugs) and severity of depression at baseline. RESULTS MS predicted non-remission at 2 years (odds ratioper component = 1.26, 95% confidence interval 1.00-1.58), p = 0.047), which was driven by the waist circumference and HDL cholesterol. MS was not associated with IDS sum score. Subsequent analyses on its subscales, however, identified an association with the somatic symptom subscale score over time (interaction time × somatic subscale, p = 0.005), driven by higher waist circumference and elevated fasting glucose level. CONCLUSIONS Metabolic dysregulation predicts a poor course of late-life depression. This finding supports the concept of 'metabolic depression', recently proposed on population-based findings of a protracted course of depressive symptoms in the presence of metabolic dysregulation. Our findings seem to be driven by abdominal obesity (as indicated by the waist circumference) and HDL cholesterol dysregulation.

Abstract
The mechanisms underlying the association between chronic psychological stress, development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and behavioral impairment in obesity are poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of mild chronic psychological stress on metabolic, inflammatory, and behavioral profiles in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. We hypothesized that (1) high-fat high-fructose diet (HFHF) and psychological stress would synergize to mediate the impact of inflammation on the central nervous system in the presence of behavioral dysfunction, and that (2) HFHF and stress interactions would impact insulin and lipid metabolism. C57Bl/6 male mice underwent a combination of HFHF and two weeks of chronic psychological stress. MetS-related conditions were assessed using untargeted plasma metabolomics, and structural and immune changes in the gut and liver were evaluated. Inflammation was measured in plasma, liver, gut, and brain. Our results show a complex interplay of diet and stress on gut alterations, energetic homeostasis, lipid metabolism, and plasma insulin levels. Psychological stress and HFHF diet promoted changes in intestinal tight junctions proteins and increases in insulin resistance and plasma cholesterol, and impacted the RNA expression of inflammatory factors in the hippocampus. Stress promoted an adaptive anti-inflammatory profile in the hippocampus that was abolished by diet treatment. HFHF increased hippocampal and hepatic Lcn2 mRNA expression as well as LCN2 plasma levels. Behavioral changes were associated with HFHF and stress. Collectively, these results suggest that diet and stress as pervasive factors exacerbate MetS-related conditions through an inflammatory mechanism that ultimately can impact behavior. This rodent model may prove useful for identification of possible biomarkers and therapeutic targets to treat metabolic syndrome and mood disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous researches reveal that depression is associated with increased inflammatory markers. As a simple and cheap inflammatory marker, we hypothesize that neutrophilic granulocyte percentage is associated with depression in hospitalized heart failure patients, whose prevalence of depression is at a very high level. METHODS Three hundred sixty-six cases of hospitalized heart failure patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤45% and New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II-IV were enrolled. All the enrolled patients received Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (24-items) (HAM-D24). The demographic, clinical data, blood samples and echocardiography were documented. The Pearson simple linear correlation was performed to evaluate the confounding factors correlated with HAM-D24 depression index. The significantly correlated factors were enrolled as independent variables in Logistic regression to determine the risk or protective factors for depression, which was taken as dependent variable. RESULTS Two hundred ten cases of hospitalized heart failure patients (57.4%) had depression. Among them, 134 patients (63.8%) had mild depression, 58 patients (27.6%) had moderate depression and 18 patients (8.6%) had severe depression. Pearson simple linear correlation revealed that in hospitalized patients with heart failure, the neutrophils granulocyte percentage was positively correlated with the HAM-D24 depression index (r = .435, p < .001). After the adjustment of age, BMI, number of members of the household, smoking index, New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification, hemoglobin, TC, LDL-C, creatinine, cystatin-C, TBIL and albumin, the neutrophils granulocyte percentage is still significantly associated with depression in hospitalized heart failure patients (OR = 1.046, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS The neutrophils granulocyte percentage may be used as a new marker for depression in hospitalized heart failure patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main causes of excess deaths in affective disorders. Affective disorders are associated with increased frequencies of CVD risk-factors such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. Stress-induced chronic cortisol excess has been suggested to promote obesity and metabolic syndrome. Chronic stress with frequent or persisting hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA-axis) hyperactivity may, over time, lead to a state of low HPA-axis activity, also denoted hypocortisolism. A low-dose weight-adjusted dexamethasone-suppression-test (DST) is considered to be a sensitive measure of hypocortisolism. METHODS 245 patients with recurrent depression or bipolar disorder and 258 controls participated in a low-dose DST and were also examined with regard to metabolic status. RESULTS Patients with hypocortisolism (low post-DST cortisol) compared with patients without hypocortisolism (normal or high post-DST cortisol) exhibited increased odds ratios (OR) for obesity (OR=4.0), overweight (OR=4.0), large waist (OR=2.7), high LDL (OR=4.2), low HDL (OR=2.4), high LDL/HDL ratio (OR=3.3), high TC/HDL ratio (OR=3.4) and metabolic syndrome (OR=2.0). A similar pattern but less pronounced was also found in the control sample. LIMITATIONS The cross sectional study design and absence of analyses addressing lifestyle factors. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that a substantial portion of the metabolic disorders and cardiovascular risk factors seen in recurrent affective disorders are found among individuals exhibiting hypocortisolism. This might indicate that long-term stress is a central contributor to metabolic abnormalities and CVD mortality in recurrent affective disorders.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a home-based (HB) exercise program on anxiety levels and metabolic functions in patients with anxiety disorders in Taiwan. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 86 participants for this randomized, experimental study. Participants were asked to complete a pretest before the 3-month exercise program, a posttest at 1 week, and a follow-up test at 3 months after the exercise program. Study measures included four Self-Report Scales and biophysical assessments to collect and assess personal data, lifestyle behaviors, anxiety levels, and metabolic control functions. Of the 86 study participants, 83 completed the posttest and the 3-month follow-up test, including 41 in the experimental group and 42 in the control group. Participants in the experimental group showed significant improvements in body mass index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and the level of moderate exercise after the program relative to the control group, as analyzed by generalized estimating equations mixed-model repeated measures. State and trait anxiety levels were also significantly improved from pretest to follow-up test in the experimental group. Finally, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome declined for participants in the experimental group. The HB exercise program produced positive effects on the metabolic indicators and anxiety levels of Taiwanese adults with anxiety disorders. Health providers should consider using similar HB exercise programs to help improve the mental and physical health of patients with anxiety disorders in their communities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The microbiota-gut-brain axis is increasingly implicated in obesity, anxiety, stress, and other health-related processes. Researchers have proposed that gut microbiota may influence dietary habits, and pathways through the microbiota-gut-brain axis make such a relationship feasible; however, few data bear on the hypothesis. As a first step in the development of a model system, the gut microbiome was examined in rat lines selectively outbred on a taste phenotype with biobehavioral profiles that have diverged with respect to energy regulation, anxiety, and stress. METHODS Occidental low and high-saccharin-consuming rats were assessed for body mass and chow, water, and saccharin intake; littermate controls had shared cages with rats in the experimental group but were not assessed. Cecum and colon microbial communities were profiled using Illumina 16S rRNA sequencing and multivariate analysis of microbial diversity and composition. RESULTS The saccharin phenotype was confirmed (low-saccharin-consuming rats, 0.7Δ% [0.9Δ%]; high-saccharin-consuming rats, 28.1Δ% [3.6Δ%]). Regardless of saccharin exposure, gut microbiota differed between lines in terms of overall community similarity and taxa at lower phylogenetic levels. Specifically, 16 genera in three phyla distinguished the lines at a 10% false discovery rate. DISCUSSION The study demonstrates for the first time that rodent lines created through selective pressure on taste and differing on functionally related correlates host different microbial communities. Whether the microbiota are causally related to the taste phenotype or its correlates remains to be determined. These findings encourage further inquiry on the relationship of the microbiome to taste, dietary habits, emotion, and health.
