Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments and marine organisms: Implications of anthropogenic effects on the coastal environment

Physiology and comparative genomics of the haloalkalitolerant and hydrocarbonoclastic marine strain Rhodococcus ruber MSA14

Marine hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria can use polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as carbon and energy sources, that makes these bacteria highly attractive for bioremediation in oil-polluted waters. However, genomic and metabolic differences between species are still the subject of study to understand the evolution and strategies to degrade PAHs. This study presents Rhodococcus ruber MSA14, an isolated bacterium from marine sediments in Baja California, Mexico, which exhibits adaptability to saline environments, a high level of intrinsic pyrene tolerance (> 5 g L- 1), and efficient degradation of pyrene (0.2 g L- 1) by 30% in 27 days. Additionally, this strain demonstrates versatility by using naphthalene and phenanthrene as individual carbon sources. The genome sequencing of R. ruber MSA14 revealed a genome spanning 5.45 Mbp, a plasmid of 72 kbp, and three putative megaplasmids, lengths between 110 and 470 Kbp. The bioinformatics analysis of the R. ruber MSA14 genome revealed 56 genes that encode enzymes involved in the peripheral and central pathways of aromatic hydrocarbon catabolism, alkane, alkene, and polymer degradation. Within its genome, R. ruber MSA14 possesses genes responsible for salt tolerance and siderophore production. In addition, the genomic analysis of R. ruber MSA14 against 13 reference genomes revealed that all compared strains have at least one gene involved in the alkanes and catechol degradation pathway. Overall, physiological assays and genomic analysis suggest that R. ruber MSA14 is a new haloalkalitolerant and hydrocarbonoclastic strain toward a wide range of hydrocarbons, making it a promising candidate for in-depth characterization studies and bioremediation processes as part of a synthetic microbial consortium, as well as having a better understanding of the catabolic potential and functional diversity among the Rhodococci group.

Occurrence, sources and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the coral reef waters of the Lakshadweep Archipelago, Arabian Sea

The compound effects of anthropogenic disturbances on global and local scales threaten coral reef ecosystems of the Arabian Sea. The impacts of organic pollutants on the coral reefs and associated organisms have received less attention and are consequently less understood. This study examines the background levels, sources, and ecological implications of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the coral reef ecosystems of Lakshadweep Archipelago. Water and particulate matter were collected from four coral Islands (Kavaratti, Agatti, Bangaram and Perumal Par) of Lakshadweep Archipelago during January and December 2022 and analysed for 15 PAHs priority pollutants. The 15 PAHs congeners generally ranged from 2.77 to 250.47 ng/L in the dissolved form and 0.44 to 6469.86 ng/g in the particulate form. A comparison of available data among the coral reef ecosystems worldwide revealed relatively lower PAHs concentrations in the Lakshadweep coral ecosystems. The isomeric ratios of individual PAH congeners and principal component analysis (PCA) indicate mixed sources of PAHs in the water column derived from pyrogenic, low-temperature combustion and petrogenic. The risk quotient (RQ) values in the dissolved form indicate moderate risk to the aquatic organisms, while they indicate moderate to severe risk in the particulate form.

Spatial distribution, source identification and flux estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides in basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been recorded worldwide, information on their presence in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO), especially south of 10°S, remains limited. We investigated the distribution and depositional fluxes of PAHs and OCPs, and the major sources and ecological risks of PAHs in EIO surface sediments from the Central Indian Ocean (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB). The concentration of Σ18 PAHs and ∑10 OCPs had an average value (± SD) of 138.4 ± 52.34 and 0.8 ± 0.20 ng g-1, respectively. PAHs may mainly affected by traffic emission and biomass and wood combustion. Persistent organic pollutant accumulation rate (PAR) and depositional flux (DF) values showed that abundant PAHs might lost during top-down transport. The low trans- chordane (CHL)/cis-CHL ratio and PAR of OCPs may indicated few OCPs were inputted into the EIO recently. The results of binary isotope mixing modeling indicate the predominance of marine organic matter (MOM) in total organic carbon (TOC) of sediments. Fluoranthene (Flour) and pyrene (Py) might have potential biological effects in the EIO. The study provided background values for PAHs and OCPs in the Indian Ocean, and preliminarily revealed the fate of POPs in the open oceans.

Residue character of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in river aquatic organisms coupled with geographic distribution, feeding behavior, and human edible risk

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) residues in fish, shrimp and shellfish have attracted attention because they are major species in the aquatic food chain and an important food source for humans. These organisms have various feeding habits and different living environments, and through the food chain, they can directly or indirectly connect particulate organic matter and human consumption. However, little attention has been paid to the bioaccumulation of PAHs in aquatic organism groups representing varied conditions and feeding habits in the food chain. In this study, 17 species of aquatic organisms, comprising fish, shrimp, and shellfish, were captured from 15 locations distributed within the river network of the Pearl River Delta. The concentration of 16 PAHs was measured in the aquatic organisms. The sum of the 16 measured PAHs ranged from 57.39 to 696.07 ng/g, dry weight, while phenanthrene had the highest individual content. The linear mixed effect model was applied to estimate the random effects of PAH accumulation in aquatic organisms. The result showed that the contributed proportion of variance to feeding habits (58.1 %) was higher than that of geographic distribution (11.8 %). In addition, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that the concentrations of PAHs depended on the water layer inhabited by the organism and its species status. Specifically, shellfish and carnivorous bottom-dwelling fish showed significantly higher levels than other aquatic organisms.

Occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organisms from Shenzhen coastal waters and human health risk assessment

This study investigated the levels and composition of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organisms from South China Sea and assessed their potential health risks. The results revealed that the pollution levels of total PAHs ranged from 3.56 to 392.21 ng/g dw. Notably, 4-ring PAHs constituted the predominant fraction (58.02 %) of the total PAHs, with pyrene being the most abundant congener across all species. Intriguingly, our findings suggested that consuming these organisms might pose a low non-cancer hazard. Nonetheless, benzo[a]pyrene was detected in most species, with levels ranging from non-detectable to 11.24 ng/g dw. The individual lifetime cancer risk levels associated with seafood consumption in studied regions ranged from 1.10 × 10-5 to 1.52 × 10-5, highlighting a potential cancer risk that warrants special attention. These findings emphasize the need to prioritize carcinogenic compounds over total PAHs and underscore the importance of continuous monitoring of PAH pollution in seafood.

Source apportionment and human health risk of PAHs accumulated in edible marine organisms: A perspective of "source-organism-human"

Most PAHs produced by human activities can be absorbed and accumulated by edible organisms and pose a potential hazard to human health. However, the source apportionment and human health risk of PAHs accumulated in edible organisms remains largely unknown. Therefore, we conducted source analysis and health risk assessment based on the PAH concentrations in ten marine fish from coastal areas of Guangdong, China. Results showed that the pollution of PAHs in fish organisms was at "Minimally polluted" level, and that all marine fish had the ability to accumulate PAHs. Risk assessment indicated Carcinogenic risk of PAHs in four populations was at a "Cautionary risk" level, with urban children suffered the highest risk. Petroleum pollution, Coal and biomass combustion, and Marine transport emissions were identified as the main anthropogenic sources for PAHs in organisms, and Marine transport emissions accounted for the highest Carcinogenic risk. The Acceptable daily intake for all populations were far below their actual daily intake without causing "Cautionary risk". Our findings provide new insights into the source apportionment and health risk of PAHs from a "source-organism-human" perspective, and suggested that joint management of three anthropogenic sources would be an effective way to prevent the health risks of PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in coral reefs with a focus on Scleractinian corals: A systematic overview

The impact of petroleum exploitation and oil spills in marine ecosystems has increased over time. Among the concerns regarding these events, the impact on coral reefs stand out because this ecosystem has ecological and economic importance and is globally threatened. We performed a systematic review and bibliometric analysis of studies that determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coral reefs, attempting to answer how the studies were distributed around the globe, the main environmental matrices and species of coral studied, the main PAHs found and their mean concentrations, and the methodology used. A bibliographic search resulted in 42 studies with worldwide distribution. The bibliometric results presented more explored terms, such as sediments and toxicology, and newly investigated terms, which should encourage a new area of study, such as those related to zooxanthellae and mucus. The main matrices studied in coral reefs are sediments, corals, and water, whereas air and other invertebrates have rarely been studied. Approximately 45 species of corals with several morphotypes have been reported. PAHs recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) were analyzed in all studies, while additional compounds were analyzed in only five. The methods used to determine hydrocarbons are predominantly the most traditional; however, for corals, studies have tended to separate tissue, zooxanthellae, skeleton, and mucus. In the future, we recommend investment in improving the capacity to detect non-conventional PAHs, more studies in regions that are rarely explored in developing countries, and the creation of databases to facilitate management planning on marine coasts.

Seasonal variation, spatial distribution, and sources of PAHs in surface seawater from Zhanjiang bay influenced by land-based inputs

This study was carried out for a comprehensive understanding of the concentrations, seasonal variation, spatial distribution, sources, and land-based inputs of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface seawater from Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB). Although the PAHs were ubiquitous, their concentrations were relatively low, and significant seasonal trends and spatial distributions were observed. Based on the diagnostic ratios and composition profiles, the PAHs found in this study mainly originated from coal/biomass burning, and petroleum and its combustion played an important role in the wet seasons. Furthermore, the PAHs from land-based inputs had seasonal variations, spatial distributions, sources, and composition profiles similar to those in ZJB seawater. By combining the cases of energy structure, residential and industrial layouts, maritime traffic, and activities related to ports and mariculture, this study concluded that PAHs in ZJB seawater are greatly influenced by land-based inputs, atmospheric deposition and human activities.

Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus, 1758) as a Sentinel Species to Assess Trace Metal Occurrence: A Case Study of Kuwait Waters (Northwestern Arabian Gulf)

Heavy metal pollution can adversely impact marine life, such as crabs, which can accumulate it in different organs and potentially transfer and biomagnify along the food chain in aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to examine the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in sediment, water, and crab tissues (gills, hepatopancreas, and carapace) of the blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus in the coastal areas of Kuwait, northwestern Arabian Gulf. Samples were collected from Shuwaikh Port, Shuaiba Port, and Al-Khiran areas. The accumulation of metals in crabs were higher in the carapace > gill > digestive gland, and the highest metal concentration was found in crabs collected from Shuwaikh > Shuaiba > Al-Khiran. The metal concentrations in the sediments were in the order Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. Zn was the highest metal concentration detected in marine water sampled from the Al-Khiran Area, whereas the lowest metal was Cd sampled in water from the Shuwaikh Area. The results of this study validate the marine crab P. pelagicus as a relevant sentinel and prospective bioindicator for evaluating heavy metal pollution in marine ecosystems.

Consequences of prenatal exposure to contaminants in elasmobranchs: Biochemical outcomes during the embryonic development of Pseudobatos horkelii

Coastal elasmobranchs are vulnerable to chemicals mostly due to their k-strategic life history characteristics and high trophic positions. Embryos might be particularly exposed through the maternal offloading of contaminants, possibly leading to disruptions during critical developmental phases. Yet, knowledge on biochemical outcomes of prenatal exposure in elasmobranchs is notably limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to contaminants in embryos of the critically endangered Brazilian guitarfish, Pseudobatos horkelii. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and metals were determined in embryos. Additionally, glutathione S-transferase activity (GST), glutathione (GSH), and metallothionein levels (MT) were analyzed. Finally, lipid peroxidation levels (LPO) and protein carbonyl groups (PCO) were assessed. Embryonic exposure depended on yolk consumption, which was conspicuous in earlier development. We observed a dilution effect of contaminants levels, potentially related to biotransformation of these compounds throughout the embryonic development. Nevertheless, GST was not correlated to contaminant concentrations. The multivariate relationship between antioxidant components (GSH and GST) and LPO and PCO was negative, suggesting the lack of efficient defense of these biomarkers in early development, leading to oxidative damage. In this context, our results indicate that prenatal exposure to contaminants might impact the redox status in embryos of P. horkelii, leading to oxidative damage. Furthermore, metal concentrations influenced MT levels, suggesting this as a potential detoxification pathway in this species.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aquatic media of Turkey: A systematic review of cancer and ecological risk

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have gathered worldwide attention due to their carcinogenicity and toxicity. This paper aims to review and extend current knowledge on PAHs in aquatic environments in Turkey, where expansion of the marine industry has caused contamination concerns. To assess cancer and ecological risks associated with PAHs, we systematically reviewed 39 research articles. Mean measured concentrations of total PAHs ranged from 61 to 249,900 ng L^-1 in surface waters, 1 to 209,400 ng g^-1 in sediments, and 4 to 55,000 ng g^-1 in organisms. Estimated cancer risks from concentrations in organisms were higher than those from surface waters and sediments. Negative ecosystem impacts of petrogenic PAHs were estimated to be larger than those of pyrogenic origin, despite the predominance of the latter. Overall, the Marmara, Aegean, and Black seas are highly-polluted and need remedial action, while further study is needed to confirm the status of other water bodies.

Persistent organic pollutants influence the marine benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in surface sediments of Nayband National Park and Bay, Northern Persian Gulf, Iran

Macroinvertebrate communities have been influenced by chemical substances, originated from petrochemical developments, that caused many problems in the marine biota. This study investigated the surface sediments of Nayband National Park and Bay (northern Persian Gulf) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in terms of their distribution, source, and impacts on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. To this end, a total of 180 surface sediment samples from 20 stations were collected using Van-Veen grab sampler during winter 2018. The concentration of PAHs, TPHs, total organic carbon (TOC). and total organic matter (TOM) were evaluated, and grain size measurements were conducted on sediment samples in this study. Benthic macroinvertebrates were then identified in terms of presence and distribution. The results indicated that coarse granulometric fractions of sands were prevalence in all samples stations. The total concentration of PAHs ranged from 47.57 to 657.68 ng/g and TPHs 5.72 to 42.16 µg/g dw. The risk of ΣPAHs and TPHs in the sediments was relatively low to moderate according to the sediment quality guidelines. Analysis of the results revealed a significant negative correlation between ΣPAHs (R-value =  - 0.917; P < 0.01), TPHs (R-value =  - 0.849; P < 0.01) and macrofaunal abundance. Findings demonstrated that the species richness and abundance were at the lowest levels in stations where concentrations of PAHs, TPHs, TOC, and TOM were in the highest values, suggesting that these contaminants could negatively influence the benthic organisms in Nayband National Park and Bay. The results of correspondence analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) analysis showed that sedimentary habitats in Nayband National Park and Bay are being negatively affected by PAHs and TPHs, released from Pars Special Economic Energy Zone (PSEEZ). Moreover, the marine biotic index (AMBI) and Shannon-Weiner Diversity (H') results suggest that Nayband National Park and Bay can be classified as slightly to moderate polluted area. In conclusion, Northern Persian Gulf is significantly affected by oil industry developments and petrochemical activities. The unique ecosystem like Nayband National Park and Bay has been in a cautious status in terms of the PSEEZ pollutants and the levels of PAHs and TPHs concentration, warning that urgent environmental programs should be considered to protect the diversity and ecology of this valuable marine systems.

Using fly larvae to convert food waste for growing Oujiang color common carps: health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

The present study used Chrysomya megacephala larvae (CML) to transform food waste into safe and high-quality fish feed to substitute fish meal as a source of protein for growing Oujiang color common carps followed by a human health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed the ∑PAH concentration in the CML fed with food waste ranged from 50 to 370 μg kg^-1, and the most abundant PAH compound in the CML was BaP, contributing 59-84% of ∑PAHs. The Pearson correlation analysis results indicated no correlation between the ∑PAH concentrations and the culture substrate ratio (p > 0.05). Concentrations of BaP in the CML decreased with the increase of breeding density (p < 0.01). The residues as organic fertilizers have no potential ecological risk for PAHs. The biotransformed larva meal was used to partially or completely replace the fish meal as supplementary protein in the experimental feeds (T₀, 0%; T₅₀, 50%; T₁₀₀, 100%). No significant difference (p < 0.05) of survival rate, lipid, and protein content in Oujiang color common carp was noted among T₀, T₅₀, and T₁₀₀ fish feeds. Concentrations of ∑PAHs in Oujiang color common carp fed with the CML fish feeds all met the food safety standards in the European Union (EU). Furthermore, the consumption of Oujiang color common carps fed with the CML feed does not pose any health risks of PAHs for humans.

Potential of microplastics participate in selective bioaccumulation of low-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons depending on the biological habits of fishes

Currently, although the cumulative effects of microplastics (MPs) and organic pollutants (OPs) in the environment and within organisms are being investigated, whether and how MPs participate in bioaccumulation of OPs based on a carrier effect is still unclear. In the present study, water and aquatic organisms were collected from the Pearl River. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and MPs were separated by solid phase extraction and were measured by gas chromatography mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. Higher PAH concentrations at the river outlet and higher MPs abundance in the inner river were observed, indicating a mismatched distribution between PAHs and MPs. No correlation between MP abundance and PAH concentration in fishes was detected, implying that MPs exerted limited influence on PAH concentrations. Interestingly, bioconcentration factors of one major low-ring PAH (phenanthrene) in fishes showed a significant correlation with MPs abundance, implying that although MPs did not affect the variation in PAH concentrations, they potentially participated in selective bioaccumulation of PAHs. Moreover, significant correlations between MPs abundance and PAHs in fishes with different feeding and living habits were found, indicating that MPs' participation in PAH bioaccumulation was dependent on fish biology and life history. Furthermore, the health risk posed by PAHs in fishes at the river outlet surpassed the line of potential high risk, while the ecological risk posed by MPs at the inner river was in the danger category, indicating the ecological risks posed by PAHs and MPs are uneven along the Pearl River. These findings deepen our understanding of the underlying mechanism of MPs participating in selective bioaccumulation of low-ring PAHs in fishes based on fish biology and point out the present risks posed by these two pollutants in the Pearl River and its estuary, which contribute to aquatic environmental protection and fishery production in this region.

Assessment of seasonal variation in distribution, source identification, and risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated sediment of Ikpoba River, South-South Nigeria

The study aims to assess the seasonal variation in distribution, source identification, and risk of 20 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (20 PAHs) in the sediment of the Ikpoba River, south-south Nigeria. The PAHs were extracted in an ultrasonic bath with a mixture of n-hexane and dichloromethane (1:1 v/v). The extract was cleaned by silica-alumina gel mixed with anhydrous Na₂SO₄ in a chromatography column, eluted by n-hexane, and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The range of the average PAHs in mg.kg-dw was 0.15 (Nap)-0.54 (Acy) and 0.13 (D.al.P)-0.99 (Acy) in wet and dry periods correspondingly, indicating an increase in concentration from wet to dry period. However, the rings of the average concentration of the PAHs show 6 and 3 rings to be the highest values during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Based on the human health risk analysis, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risk indices showed low non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for both seasons. The ecological risk analysis showed the mean effect range median quotient (mERMQ) recorded a medium-low effect on the biota of the locations, except in AS3 during the wet season and also in WS8 and WS9 during the dry season. The minimum value of the toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ) was > 0.2 mg/kg, which indicated a recommendation for the clean-up of the Ikpoba River. The isomer ratio and the principal component analysis (PCA) revealed the sources of the PAHs to be majorly combustion, followed by pyrolytic and petrogenic sources for both seasons.

The scleractinian coral Pocillopora damicornis relies on neuroendocrine regulation to cope with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under heat stress

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly toxic environmental pollutants and are threatening scleractinian corals. In this study, PAHs treatment did not induce significant physiological responses of the coral Pocillopora damicornis and its algal symbionts, but biological processes including response to toxin, drug metabolic, and oxidation reduction were triggered at the mRNA level. These results implied that PAHs could be a group of slow-acting environmental toxicants, whose effects were moderate but persistent. Besides, it was interesting to find that PAHs activated the neuroendocrine system in the coral by triggering the expression of monoaminergic and acetylcholinergic system related genes, indicating that PAHs might function as environmental hormones. Moreover, the combined treatments of PAHs and heat caused a much obvious effect on the coral and its algal symbionts by elevating antioxidant activity and suppressing photosynthesis in the symbionts. Results from the transcriptome data further indicated that corals might perform stress responses upon PAHs and heat challenges through the TNF and apoptosis pathways, which perhaps was modulated by the neuroendocrine system of corals. Collectively, our survey demonstrates that the PAHs can function as environmental hormones and activate the neuroendocrine regulation in scleractinian corals, which may contribute to the stress responses of symbiotic association by modulating photosynthesis, antioxidation, and apoptosis.

Characteristics of indoor and outdoor Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution in TSP in rural Northeast China: A case study of heating and non-heating periods

Approximately 91% of the world's population lives in an air-polluted environment, and environmental pollution has become a widespread concern. Urban indoor and outdoor air pollution has been fully researched and effective control measures have been proposed. However, the issue of air pollution in rural areas has not been explored in depth. Compared to urban air pollution, the rural air pollution problem is more complex and urgent. Due to climatic factors and economic conditions in rural Northeast China, most households use solid fuels such as biomass straw and coal as domestic energy during the heating period, which will cause serious pollution problems of Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). To investigate the pollution characteristics of PAHs in indoor and outdoor TSP in rural Northeast China during the heating and non-heating periods, a medium-sized particulate matter collector 1108A was used to collect TSP for 7 days, and GC-MS was used to detect PAHs. The results showed that indoor TSP and PAHs pollution levels were the highest during the heating period. PAHs source analysis by Diagnostic Ratio (DR) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated that the main sources were biomass and coal combustion, vehicle emissions, and domestic waste incineration. According to the results of carcinogenic risk model calculations, there is a potential carcinogenic risk to the population in the Northeast rural living area. This study reflects the pollution characteristics and sources of indoor and outdoor TSP and PAHs in rural Northeast China during heating and non-heating periods, and provides a reference for further prevention and control of air pollution in rural areas, which is conducive to improving the living environment and improving human health.

Anaerobic biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by fungi isolated from anaerobic coal-associated sediments at 2.5 km below the seafloor

Fungi represent the dominant eukaryotic group in the deep biosphere and well-populated in the anaerobic coal-bearing sediments up to ∼2.5 km below seafloor (kmbsf). But whether fungi are able to degrade and utilize coal to sustain growth in the anaerobic sub-seafloor environment remains unknown. Based on biodegradation investigation, we found that fungi isolated from sub-seafloor sediments at depths of ∼1.3-∼2.5 kmbsf showed a broad range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) anaerobic degradation rates (3-25%). Among them, the white-rot fungus Schizophyllium commune 20R-7-F01 exhibited the highest degradation, 25%, 18% and 13%, of phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP); respectively, after 10 days of anaerobic incubation. Phe was utilized well and about 40.4% was degraded by the fungus, after 20 days of anaerobic incubation. Moreover, the ability of fungi to degrade PAHs was positively correlated with the anaerobic growth of fungi, indicating that fungi can use PAHs as a sole carbon source under anoxic conditions. In addition, fungal degradation of PAHs was found to be related to the activity of carboxylases, but little or nothing to do with the activity of lignin modifying enzymes such as laccase (Lac), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP). These results suggest that sub-seafloor fungi possess a special mechanism to degrade and utilize PAHs as a carbon and energy source under anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, fungi living in sub-seafloor sediments may not only play an important role in carbon cycle in the anaerobic environments of the deep biosphere, but also be able to persist in deep sediment below seafloor for millions of years by using PAHs or related compounds as carbon and energy source. This anaerobic biodegradation ability could make these fungi suitable candidates for bioremediation of toxic pollutants such as PAHs from anoxic environments.

Distribution, source and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of northern part of the Persian Gulf

Distribution, sources, and ecological risk of 43 compounds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surficial sediments of the Persian Gulf were investigated. The sediments were sampled from 60 offshore stations during an oceanographic cruise in the winter of 2012. Gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry was used for the PAHs determinations in sediment samples. The concentrations of 21 parent PAHs, 7 methylated PAHs, 11 oxygenated PAHs and 4 nitrated PAHs were 9.0-201.5 ng g^-1 dw, 3.3-60.3 ng g^-1 dw, 15.2-172.7 ng g^-1 dw and 0.1-8.3 ng g^-1 dw, respectively. Among 21 parental PAHs, naphthalene (29.35 ng g^-1 dw), phenanthrene (4.6 ng g^-1 dw), and pyrene (3.18 ng g^-1 dw) were the most abundant compound. 1-acenaphthenone (43.41 ng g^-1 dw) and 2-methylnaphthalene (7.15 ng g^-1 dw) showed the highest concentration in the oxy- and methyl-PAHs, respectively. The concentrations of nitro-PAHs were between not detected to 4 ng g^-1 dw. According to the ecological risk assessment, the calculated total toxicity of PAHs was at below the lethal level on benthic organisms in all stations in the Persian Gulf, but there is risk of toxicity for the benthic organism in the Gulf of Oman (from the Strait of Hormuz to Jask). In general, nitrogenated and oxygenated derivatives did not show a significant risk in the study area. Based on the diagnostic ratios, the mixed sources (both petrogenic and pyrogenic) and pyrogenic sources have been identified for PAHs. Biomass combustion source has been identified for the stations near flares and gas fields. Principle component analysis-multivariate linear regression analysis for source identification shows that maritime traffic, abundant flares that burn the gas in oil, gas fields and dust storms have a major impact on the production of PAHs in this area.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at subcritical levels as novel indicators of microbial adaptation in a pre-industrial river delta

Marine sediment is considered a vast sink for organic pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, little is known about the relationship between subcritical PAH allocation and benthic microbial patterns. Thus, we carried out a field investigation at the abandoned Yellow River Delta (AYRD) to deepen the understanding of PAHs' horizontal distribution and ecological roles on the continental shelf. The PAH level in the AYRD is relatively low and distance-independent, indicating it resulted from long-term, chronic, anthropogenic input. The combined application of diagnostic molecular ratios reported inconsistent PAH sources, which might be due to the low PAH concentrations and the complexity of contributing sources. Positive Matrix Factorization provided a more robust source classification and identified three main PAH sources-coal combustion and vehicle emissions, petrogenic process, and fossil fuels. The benthic microbiome did not show a significant response to PAHs in terms of microbial assemblage or alpha-diversity. However, Operational Taxonomic Units in some specific phyla, like Thaumarchaeota, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Chytridiomycota, correlated with the PAH source indicators, supporting the notion that PAH source indicators can act as a novel environmental indicator for microbial adaption. What's more, Microbial Ecological Networks show more connection at sites identified as biomass combustion by both Fluoranthene/(Fluoranthene + Pyrene) and Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene/(Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene + Benzo(ghi)perylene) compared to the ones identified as biomass combustion by Fluoranthene/(Fluoranthene + Pyrene) and petroleum combustion by Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene/(Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene + Benzo(ghi)perylene). Herein, we demonstrate that the PAHs' source indicator can serve as a novel indicator of the interactions between microorganisms, and thus, should be applied to the sustainable management effort in the offshore area.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aquatic animals: a systematic review on analytical advances and challenges

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the main component of petroleum, are a concern due to their environmental persistence, long-range transport, and potential toxic effects on animal, human health, and the environment. PAHs are considered persistent compounds and can be bioaccumulated in sediments and aquatic biota. Determining PAHs in animals and environmental samples consists of three steps: extraction, clean-up or purification, and analytical determination. The matrix complexity and the diversity of environmental contaminants, such as PAHs resulted in the development of numerous analytical techniques and protocols for the extraction of these components and analysis in several samples. This systematic review article seeks to relate the extraction and preparation methods of complex samples from aquatic animals and the two main detection techniques of PAHs. For the elaboration of the research, 67 articles published between 2011 and 2021 were sought, which specifically contemplated the isolation of aquatic extracts and detection and quantification techniques of PAHs.

Seasonal variation, source identification, and risk assessment of organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers in surficial sediments from Liao River estuary wetland, China

Organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants and plasticizers in surficial sediments were collected in Liao River estuarine wetland during the dry, flood, and level periods to understand the seasonal variation, potential sources, and environmental risks. The concentrations of ∑₁₃OPEs ranged from 19.5 to 67.0 ng g^-1 dry weight (dw), with an average concentration of 30.6 ng g^-1 dw. OPEs pollution displayed a seasonal variation, the concentrations of OPEs in dry period > level period > flood period. Tributyl-n-phosphate was the predominant OPEs, which accounts for 29.7% of ∑₁₃OPEs. Principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization suggested that the pollution sources of OPEs also varied seasonally. The ecological risk of OPEs to aquatic organisms was low, and the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to human beings were also far below the acceptable level. 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate was the major compound causing ecological and non-carcinogenic risk, while tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate had the highest carcinogenic risk.

Variation of the mangrove sediment microbiomes and their phenanthrene biodegradation rates during the dry and wet seasons

Mangrove sediment is a major sink for phenanthrene in natural environments. Consequently, this study investigated the effects of seasonal variation on the biodegradation rates of low (150 mg kg^-1), moderate (600 mg kg^-1), and high (1200 mg kg^-1) phenanthrene-contaminated mangrove sediments using a microcosm study and identified potential key phenanthrene-degrading bacteria using high throughput sequencing of 16 S rRNA gene and quantitative-PCR of the PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (PAH-RHD_α) genes. The biodegradation rates of phenanthrene in all treatments were higher in the wet-season sediments (11.58, 14.51, and 8.94 mg kg^-1 sediment day^-1) than in the dry-season sediments (3.51, 12.56, and 5.91 mg kg^-1 sediment day^-1) possibly due to higher nutrient accumulation caused by rainfall and higher diversity of potential phenanthrene-degrading bacteria. The results suggested that the mangrove sediment microbiome significantly clustered according to season. Although Gram-negative phenanthrene-degrading bacteria (i.e., Anaerolineaceae, Marinobacter, and Rhodobacteraceae) played a key role in both dry and wet seasons, distinctly different phenanthrene-degrading bacterial taxa were observed in each season. Halomonas and Porticoccus were potentially responsible for the degradation of phenanthrene in the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The knowledge gained from this study contributes to the development of effective and rationally designed microbiome innovations for oil removal.

Impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in mangroves from the Colombian pacific coast: Evaluation in sediments and bivalves

Bivalves and sediments were sampled from mangroves in the Pacific Coast of Colombia to evaluate the concentrations of the 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) prioritized by U.S.EPA. Mangroves are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic activities, such as oil spills, which affect sediments and the organisms that depend on that ecosystem. Twelve samples of mangrove and non-mangrove (sandy) sediments and 20 samples of Anadara tuberculosa from mangrove were collected in marine and estuarine areas. In sediments and A. tuberculosa, the highest concentration of Ʃ16PAHs was found in estuarine mangroves close to the Rosario River mouth, ranging from 171.4 to 564.0 ng g^-1 and 31.0 to 169.0 ng g^-1, respectively. For the bivalve, the concentrations showed less variability than sediment, with 25% and 20% of bivalve samples exceeding the limits established by the European Regulatory Commission and Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia, respectively, which can cause effects on people's health. The PAHs isomeric ratios determined in sediments indicated that these compounds were originated mainly from petrogenic sources. The PAHs profile reveals the dominance of 3 and 4 rings PAHs in sediments and dominance of 4 rings PAHs in bivalves.

Temporal and spatial characteristics of PAHs in oysters from the Pearl River Estuary, China during 2015-2020

Estuary connects the inland freshwater and open seawater, which may become a sink for pollutants from land-derived outflows, especially for persistent organic pollutants (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs). Due to complex fluctuation in estuary, it's difficult to achieve a comprehensive assessment of the pollution characteristics by grabbed environmental samples. Oysters serve as efficient biomonitors of pollution status in highly dynamic and anthropogenically impacted estuaries, like the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), South China. Here, we investigated the annual, seasonal, and spatial variations of PAHs in the soft tissues of oysters from the PRE over the last six years (2015-2020) and quantitatively analyzed the influence of environmental factors on PAH occurrence in the oysters. The concentrations of Σ₁₅PAH in oysters ranged from 74 to 1164 (337 ± 218) ng/g dry wt., with a peak occurrence in 2017. Highly seasonal and geographical variations in PAH pollution were documented in the PRE, with higher concentrations in oysters during the wet season than dry season, and in the eastern coast than western coast. Furthermore, geographical variation in PAH levels in the oysters was enhanced during the wet season, indicating a possible contribution of heavy rainfall flushing from the Pearl River. In addition to precipitation, water temperature and salinity also significantly influenced PAH levels in the oysters from the PRE by changing the bioavailability and biokinetics. Long-term biomonitoring using oysters in the current study reflected the pollution status and variation trends of PAHs in the highly dynamic PRE.

Transfer of Pollutants from Macrocystis pyrifera to Tetrapygus niger in a Highly Impacted Coastal Zone of Chile

PAHs and heavy metals are characteristic pollutants in urbanized coastal areas, especially those with industrial activity. Given this context and the ability of Macrocystis pyrifera to drift when detached and provide trophic subsidy in coastal systems, we analyzed the potential transfer of pollutants to the herbivore Tetrapygus niger, through diet, in an industrialized coastal zone in Central Chile (Caleta Horcón) and characterized the impacted zone using diverse polluted ecotoxicological indices. For this purpose, a culture experiment was conducted where M. pyrifera individuals from Algarrobo (control site) were cultivated in Caleta Horcón and then used as food for T. niger. The contents of both PAHs and heavy metal contents were subsequently determined in algal tissue and sea urchin gonads as well as in the seawater. The results show that algae cultivated in Caleta Horcón had higher concentrations of naphthalene (NAF) compared to those from a low industrial impact zone (Algarrobo) (2.5 and 1.8 mg kg-1, respectively). The concentrations of Cu, As, and Cd were higher in Caleta Horcón than in Algarrobo in both M. pyrifera and T. niger. For all metals, including Pb, higher concentrations were present in T. niger than in M. pyrifera (between 5 and 798 times higher). Additionally, as indicated by the toxicological indices MPI (0.00804) and PLI (10.89), Caleta Horcón is highly contaminated with metals compared to Algarrobo (0.0006 and 0.015, respectively). Finally, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and trophic transfer factor (TTF) values were greater than one in most cases, with values in Caleta Horcón exceeding those in Algarrobo by one or two orders of magnitude. This study provides evidence that Caleta Horcón is a highly impacted zone (HIZ) compared to Algarrobo, in addition to evidence that the biomagnification of certain pollutants, including the possible responses to contaminants, are apparently not exclusively transferred to T. niger through diet.

Organochlorines and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons as fingerprint of exposure pathways from marine sediments to biota

To elucidate the dynamics of a suite of organochlorine contaminants (PCBs, HCB), PAHs and Hg and verify the potential of these pollutants as reliable fingerprints of sources, an ensemble of marine sediments and organisms (finfish, shellfish species and Mytilus galloprovincialis) were analysed from the contaminated Augusta Bay (Southern Italy). The Hg and HCB concentration in the sediments exceeded the EQS of the Directive 2000/60/EU. Similarly, ∑PCB and selected PAHs were above the threshold limit set by regulation. The marine organisms showed Hg concentrations above CE 1881/2006. Contaminants in transplanted mussel evidenced an increased accumulation overtime and different distribution patterns between sampling sites. Analysis of the homolog composition of PCB congeners revealed comparable patterns between sediments and marine organisms and offered the opportunity to define a robust fingerprint for tracing contaminants transfer from the abiotic to the biotic compartments. These results were confirmed by the Fluoranthene/Pyrene, Hg and HCB distribution modes.

Bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Solea solea from Bizerte and Ghar El Melh Lagoons (Tunisia) and human health risk assessment

The present study objective was to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Bizerte and Ghar El Melh Lagoons Solea solea and to assess the potential risk to human health from its consumption. To reach these objectives twenty fish samples from each site were collected and 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in their muscles using high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. Total PAH sole concentrations from Bizerte and Ghar El Melh Lagoons were similar or lower to those recorded in other species from other regions across the world. In the studied fish species, the 2 and 3 ring PAHs are the dominated compounds that enter to the composition of PAHs which indicates that PAHs could be principally derived from a petrogenic origin for the both studied lagoons. The human health risk by sole consumption was evaluated and revealed to exhibit no hazard to the local population health concerning PAH intakes. The findings of this biomonitoring study will help in the implementation of sustainable environmental policies for effective water pollution control and the two investigated lagoons management.

Occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fried and grilled fish from Shandong China and health risk assessment

Diet is the main way for the human body to ingest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, the occurrence, dietary exposure, and health risks of 15 PAHs in 31 fried and grilled fish samples were investigated, which were collected from the Shandong Province of China. The results showed that benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) of 5 samples exceeded the European Union (EU) limit value. Naphthalene (NaP) and fluorene (Fle) were present in all samples, and the average concentration of ∑15PAHs was 91.1 μg/kg, with light PAHs dominated. The average contamination level of ∑15PAHs in fried and grilled fish was distributed differently, and there seemed to be more PAH contamination in the grilled samples. The results of the margin of exposure (MOE) suggested that PAH ingestion through fried and grilled fish did not imply significant toxicological concern for consumers in Shandong. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values for the consumption of fried and grilled fish were higher than 1 × 10-6, indicating a potential health risk in the adult population. The study provides baseline health information on PAH intake by residents due to dietary exposure to fried and grilled fish food products, suggesting that health risk monitoring of PAHs in such foods should be continually performed.

Contribution of Dietary Uptake to PAH Bioaccumulation in a Simplified Pelagic Food Chain: Modeling the Influences of Continuous vs Intermittent Feeding in Zooplankton and Fish

Dietary uptake is important for trophic transfer of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the freshwater pelagic ecosystem. In this study, we hypothesized that both the dietary uptake rate and interval significantly influenced its relative contribution to bioaccumulation. We developed a toxicokinetic model framework for the bioaccumulation of deuterated PAHs (PAHs-d₁₀) in aquatic organisms considering different feeding intervals ranging from none for phytoplankton to approximately continuous for zooplankton to discrete for fish and built a simple artificial freshwater pelagic food chain composed of algae Chlorella vulgaris, zooplankton Daphnia magna, and zebrafish. We conducted bioaccumulation experiments and simulations for Daphnia magna and zebrafish under different algal densities based on our model. The results showed that intermittent feeding led to a large fluctuation in the PAH-d₁₀ concentrations in zebrafish compared to a leveled-off pattern in Daphnia magna because of approximately continuous feeding. Trophic dilution of PAHs-d₁₀ occurred in the food chain when there was waterborne-only uptake, but dietary uptake largely mitigated its extent that depended on dietary uptake rates. The assimilation efficiency, dietary uptake rate, and its relative contribution to bioaccumulation of PAHs-d₁₀ in zebrafish were all higher than those in Daphnia magna, suggesting that dietary uptake played a more important role in bioaccumulation of PAHs at higher trophic-level organisms.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments of the amazon coast: Evidence for localized sources in contrast to massive regional biomass burning

The Amazon coastal zone has become contaminated with organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, information about their distribution and sources in this area is scarce, despite increasing deforestation and oil exploitation. Therefore, individual PAHs were analysed in the sediments of the Oyapock estuary, which is located in the Amazon coastal zone. This study provides information about the spatial and short-term temporal distributions of PAHs and discusses the major sources of PAHs to better understand the anthropogenic processes occurring in adjacent areas. The concentrations of all sixteen priority PAHs defined by the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency, ∑₁₆PAHs) ranged from 10.9 to 138.8 ng g^-1 with a mean and standard deviation = 37.9 ± 20.5 and indicated that this estuary is not contaminated, while the mean levels were similar to those found in other Amazon regions and pristine areas along the coast of Brazil. No significant differences were found in the sedimentary PAHs levels between the wet and dry sampling campaigns, despite the different climatic conditions. Diagnostic ratios, positive matrix factorization (PMF) and cluster analysis have shown that the majority of the investigated PAHs were derived from combustion processes (at least 55.1%, as estimated by the PMF model). Localized source inputs from oil and its by-products concomitantly with natural/biogenic sources appear to be secondary sources. The PAH contribution from biomass and wood combustion was approximately 13.6% and was relatively lower than other regions of the Amazon that are undergoing massive biomass burning. As the first study of PAHs in this region, this study provides vital information on the healthy state of the estuary and can serve as a baseline for assessing the impacts of acute oil disasters or the chronic input of PAHs as a result of human settlements.

Maternal transfer of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in an endangered elasmobranch, the Brazilian guitarfish

Maternal transfer of contaminants is an important route of exposure for many species during embryonic development, which might compromise the organism throughout its life cycle. Here, we report the maternal offloading of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an elasmobranch, the Brazilian guitarfish Pseudobatos horkelii. Eighteen PAHs were determined by gas chromatography in maternal liver and uterine content (uterine eggs and early-stage development embryos) samples to determine the maternal transfer rate. The mean rate of PAHs offloaded to the offspring was of 13%, with high variability among individual congener transfer (0.7-29.9%) and benzo[b]fluoranthene attaining the highest maternal transfer rates. Differential transfer rates were attributed to physicochemical proprieties of each compound, with low molecular level PAHs presenting the highest rates. A depuration mechanism in which females decrease their maternal transfer rate as a function of size, related to consecutive reproductive cycles was not properly observed in this study. From a conservation perspective, these results indicate that elasmobranchs embryos of an endangered species can be exposed to PAHs during their development and, considering the possible harmful effects of these compounds to other early life stage organisms, deleterious effects could be a possibility, although this was not analyzed herein.

Assessing the efficiency and eco-sustainability of bioremediation strategies for the reclamation of highly contaminated marine sediments

Coastal sediments subjected to high anthropogenic impacts can accumulate large amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals, demanding effective and eco-sustainable remediation solutions. In this study, we carried out bioremediation experiments on marine sediments highly contaminated with PAHs and metals. In particular, we investigated the effects of biostimulation (by the addition of inorganic nutrients), bioaugmentation (by the addition of fungi belonging to Aspergillus sp.) and microbial fuel cell-based strategies on PAH degradation and on changes in metal partitioning. Results reported here indicate that all biotreatments determined a significant decrease of PAH concentrations (at least 60%) in a relatively short time interval (few weeks) and that biostimulation was the most effective approach (>90%). Biostimulation determined a faster degradation rate of high than low molecular weight PAHs, indicating a preferential biodegradation of specific PAH congeners. At the same time, the biotreatments changed the partitioning of metals, including their solubilization, suggesting the need of parallel environmental risk assessment. Our findings also suggest that ex situ biotreatments can have a lower carbon footprint than current management options of contaminated sediments (i.e., landfill disposal and/or disposal in confined aquatic facilities), but integration with other strategies for metal removal (e.g. through bioleaching) from sediments is needed for their safe re-use. Overall, results presented here provide new insights into the development of effective and eco-sustainable bioremediation strategies for the reclamation of highly contaminated marine sediments.

Accumulation of PAHs in the tissues and algal symbionts of a common Mediterranean coral: Skeletal storage relates to population age structure

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread and harmful environmental pollutants that threaten marine ecosystems. Assessing their level and source is crucial to estimate the potential risks for marine organisms, as PAHs represent an additional threat to organism resilience under ongoing climatic change. Here we applied the QuEChERS extraction method to quantify four PAHs (i.e. acenaphthene, fluorene, fluoranthene, and pyrene) in three biological compartments (i.e. skeleton, tissue, and zooxanthellae symbiotic algae) of adult and old specimens of a scleractinian coral species (Balanophyllia europaea) that is widespread throughout the Mediterranean Sea. A higher concentration of all four investigated PAHs was observed in the zooxanthellae, followed by the coral tissue, with lowest concentration in the skeleton, consistently with previous studies on tropical species. In all the three biological compartments, the concentration of low molecular weight PAHs was higher with respect to high-molecular weight PAHs, in agreement with their bioaccumulation capabilities. PAH concentration was unrelated to skeletal age. Observed PAHs were of petrogenic origin, reflecting the pollution sources of the sampling area. By coupling PAH data with population age structure data measured in the field, the amount of PAHs stored in the long term (i.e. up to 20 years) in coral skeletons was quantified and resulted in 53.6 ng m^-2 of acenaphthene, 69.4 ng m^-2 of fluorene, 2.7 ng m^-2 of fluoranthene, and 11.7 ng m^-2 of pyrene. This estimate provides the basis for further assessments of long-term sequestration of PAHs from the marine environment in the whole Mediterranean, given the widespread distribution of the investigated coral species.

Implications of anthropogenic effects on the coastal environment of Northern Persian Gulf, using jinga shrimp (Metapenaeus affinis) as indicator

The distribution and sources of PAHs in jinga shrimp (Metapenaeus affinis), and human health risks due to consumption was evaluated in collected samples from the Musa Bay, Persian Gulf. The total concentration of PAHs (∑16PAHs) ranged from 10 to 144 μg kg^-1 dry weight, indicating low to moderate level of pollution. The PAHs were dominated by three- (41%) and two-ring (38%) compounds. Source identification analyses indicated the PAH pollution mostly originated from petroleum inputs. A preliminary evaluation of human health risk using chronic daily intake, hazard index, benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaP_eq) concentration (PEC) as well as the incremental life cancer risk and non-cancer risk assessment suggest low potential health risk for consumers of the Metapenaeus affinis. However, the results indicate minimal risks associated with the intake of PAHs via shrimp consumption, but long-term monitoring is required to evaluate the changes in ecological and human health impacts of contaminants in the region. MAIN FINDING: PAHs in Metapenaeus affinis from Musa bay, which influenced by anthropogenic activities were low to moderate level of pollution. Human health risk indicates low potential health risk for consumers.

First evidence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments from a marine protected area within Argentinean Continental Shelf

This study evaluated for the first time, the distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments collected along the northern Patagonian shelf in the Argentine Sea -included in a Marine Protected Area (MPA). Total concentration of the PAHs varied from 19.47 to 183.17 ng/g dry weight and low molecular weight compounds, such as Anthracene and Naphthalene were the dominants. The selected PAHs ratios suggested a predominance of petrogenic sources and ecotoxicological risk evaluation based on the sediment quality guidelines model, indicated that some PAHs might cause occasional adverse biological effects in the study area.

Monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in transplanted mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and sediments in the coastal region of Nemrut Bay (Eastern Aegean Sea)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the coastal region of Nemrut Bay, Eastern Aegean. Sediment and caged mussels were evaluated for sixteen PAHs. High contamination was observed in the sediment sampling sites next to the petrochemical refinery. Low molecular weight PAH levels were dominant in the sediments and the ratio LMW/HMW were higher than one, indicating petrogenic origin pollution. The m-ERM-q values of the sediments were classified as high-priority sites near the refinery while other sites were categorized as medium-low sites. 4-ring PAHs were found to be dominant in the mussels. PAHs were originated from petroleum and mixed sources (petrogenic, pyrogenic) both two transplantation experiments. The assessment of human health risk based on the Carcinogenic `Toxic Equivalents suggested that the mussels have high capability to give rise to carcinogenic risks. PAH levels in the mussels were above the Recommended Total Carcinogenic PAH limits set by the European Union.

Biomonitoring of aromatic hydrocarbons in clam Meretrix meretrix from an emerging urbanization area, and implications for human health

Pollution with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) is a global concern and particularly in coastal environments. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are regarded as the most toxic components of TPHs and they can also be derived from other sources. Fangcheng Port is considered as a representative emerging coastal city in China, but the status, sources, and hazards to organisms and humans with respect to contamination with PAHs and TPHs are unknown in the coastal regions of this area. Therefore, in this study, we cloned cytochrome P450 family genes (CYP1A1, CYP3A, and CYP4) and heat shock protein 70 gene (HSP70) in the clam Meretrix meretrix as well as optimizing the method for measuring the 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase activity. These molecular indicators and four specific physiological indexes were found to be appropriate biomarkers for indicating the harmful effects of PAHs and TPHs on clams after exposure to the crude oil water-soluble fraction. In field monitoring surveys, we found that the 2- and 3-ring PAHs were dominant in the clams whereas the 4- to 6-ring PAHs were dominant in the sediments at each site. The PAH levels (3.63-12.77 ng/g wet weight) in wild clams were lower, whereas the TPH levels (13.25-70.50 μg/g wet weight) were higher compared with those determined previous in China and elsewhere. The concentrations of PAHs and TPHs in the sediments (19.20-4215.76 ng/g and 3.65-866.40 μg/g dry weight) were moderate compared with those in other global regions. Diagnostic ratio analysis demonstrated that the PAHs were derived mainly from pyrogenic sources. The TPHs may have come primarily from industrial effluents, land and maritime transportation, or fishing activities. The Integrated Biomarker Response version 2 indexes indicated that the clams collected from site S5 exhibited the most harmful effects due to contamination by PAHs and TPHs. Human health risk assessments demonstrated that the risks due to PAHs and TPHs following the consumption of clams can be considered acceptable. Our results suggest that continuous monitoring of contamination by PAHs and TPHs is recommended in this emerging coastal city as well as assessing their human health risks.

Effects of biological factors and seasonality on the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in red mullet (Mullus barbatus)

This study evaluates the effects of biological factors of fish and seasonality on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) accumulation in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) tissue. Specimens were collected monthly with a bottom trawl net in an offshore fishing ground in the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea (Geographical Sub Area 17) throughout 2016. The edible fillets of 380 individuals were analyzed for the concentrations of individual PAH, total PAH, and low, medium and high molecular weight (MW) PAHs. PAH bioaccumulation was related to their physicochemical characteristics (MW, and logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient, log K_ow), some biological parameters of fish (body size, age, sex, reproductive stage and total lipid content), and catch season. The PAH bioaccumulation pattern and the effects of the different factors varied according to PAH MW. The heavier (medium and high MW) PAHs showed higher levels in winter-autumn and in pre-spawners compared with spawners and post-spawners. Our findings suggest that an important detoxification mechanism, albeit limited to the heavier PAHs, acts in the spawning and post-spawning stage. Low MW PAHs appeared to be unaffected by reproductive stage, lipid content and seasonality. Reproductive stage and seasonality seem to play an important role in the accumulation of heavier PAH, whereas total lipid content and age seem to exert a limited influence, and body size no effect at all.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface sediment and bivalves from Hormozgan Province coastline in the Northern Persian Gulf: A focus on source apportionment

This study investigates Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Bisphenol-A (BPA) pollution in coastal sediments and bivalves of Hormozgan Province coastline. The results indicated that the BPA concentration in some bivalves reached up to 340.16 ng g^-1. The mean BPA concentration in the sediment samples was also 787.01 ng g^-1. The ∑PAHs content in sediments ranged from 14.54 to 85.00 ng g^-1, while values for bivalves ranged from 5.37 to 16.40 ng g^-1. Individual PAH concentrations in sediments exceeded those in bivalves for which only LMW PAHs were detected. A combination of techniques including Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF), and Cluster Analysis (CA) were applied and both petrogenic and pyrogenic sources were identified. The risk of PAHs in the sediments was relatively low according to the sediment quality guidelines. The health risk indices suggest that exposure to PAHs through bivalve consumption does not impose harmful health effects upon consumers.

Facile synthesis of polydivinylbenzene coated magnetic polydopamine coupled with pressurized liquid extraction for the extraction and cleanup of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils

Due to the trace levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and the complexity of soil matrices, effective sample pretreatment methods are of great significance to obtain accurate analytical results. In this paper, polydopamine (PDA) encapsulated Fe₃O₄ particles were used as seeds for in situ polymerization of divinylbenzene (DVB) to derive magnetic hybrid material Fe₃O₄@PDA@PDVB. Coupled with pressurized liquid extraction, Fe₃O₄@PDA@PDVB was investigated as a selective adsorbent for the extraction and cleanup of PAHs in soil. The prepared magnetic material was characterized and demonstrated to possess strong hydrophobicity and superparamagnetism. Under optimal conditions, Fe₃O₄@PDA@PDVB can effectively extract 15 PAHs from a 30% methanol solution within 2 min, and it is more selective for PAHs than for n-alkane in soil extracts. The matrix effect significantly decreased after extraction by the prepared material, which showed superiority to a silica gel column method (EPA 3630C Method). The developed method was linear (5-1000 ng g^-1) with coefficient of determination (R²) ranging from 0.9986-0.9998, and the limits of detection were 0.13-0.54 ng g^-1. Additionally, repetitive experiments indicated that the prepared material was reproducible and reusable with relative standard deviations below 8.4% and 8.6%, respectively. Finally, the new method was successfully employed to determine the concentrations of PAHs in genuine soil and standard reference material, and the results were comparable to those of widely utilized EPA methodology.

PAES and PAHs in the surface sediments of the East China Sea: Occurrence, distribution and influence factors

A total of 29 sediment samples were collected from the East China Sea (ECS), with the Yangtze River estuary and the Zhejiang costal area. These sediment samples were analyzed for 6 phthalate esters (PAEs) and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): the ΣPAEs and ΣPAHs concentrations ranged between 1649.5 and 8451.5 ng g^-1 (mean = 3446.3 ng g^-1) and 57.5-364.5 ng g^-1 (mean = 166.2 ng g^-1), respectively. Overall, the PAEs and PAHs concentrations gradually decreasing in the offshore and southward directions: their compositions and distributions suggest they could have mainly derived from the Yangtze River. In particular, their distribution was influenced by the sources' proximity, hydrodynamics, and sediment geochemistry (i.e., TOC content and grain size). A classical two-end member model was utilized to estimate the fraction of terrestrial organic carbon in the sediments of the ECS. When the sediment was dominated by terrestrial-derived organic matter (OM), the concentrations of PAEs and PAHs were significantly correlated to the TOC content and gran size of the sediments. In contrast, the poor correlation of TOC content and grain size with PAEs in those sediments dominated by marine-derived OM, implied that the distribution of PAEs in the ECS was mainly related to land-based inputs, (especially to that of the Yangtze River). Regardless of the origin of most of the OM contained in the sediments, we observed positive correlations between the TOC content, and grain size of those containing PAHs. These results suggest that the distribution of PAHs in the ECS was not only related to the Yangtze River input, but also to the geochemical characteristics of the sediments.

Trophic transfer affects cytogenetic and antioxidant responses of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis to copper and benzo(α)pyrene

The impacts of environmental pollutants on marine organisms can be determined by the routes of exposure. Various routes of exposure, including dietary exposure and waterborne exposure with or without feeding, were applied to study the cytogenetic responses in marine mussels Mytilus galloprovincials to typical pollutants, BaP (53.74 ± 19.79 μg/L) and Cu (47.38 ± 3.10 μg/L). The increased DNA strand breaks and micronucleus formation were found in haemocytes of mussels via the dietary exposure, indicating the vital role of trophic transfer in toxicity induction. The deeper exploration to relate BaP induced cytogenetic alterations with key antioxidant defense factors, SOD and GST, was performed under different exposure routes. The results revealed the significantly inhibited SOD activity via the trophic transfer, suggesting more direct or prompt role of SOD in antioxidant defense. On contrary, gene expressions of both sod and gst were up-regulated upon all routes of exposures, and showed negative correlation with enzyme activities. The results suggested the asynchronous regulation of studied antioxidant factors at transcriptional and enzyme functional level in mussels upon the change of exposure routes. The study brings out the first observation of trophic transfer influenced cytogenetic and antioxidant responses to pollutants and their alterative risk to marine organisms.

Highly efficient anaerobic co-degradation of complex persistent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by a bioelectrochemical system

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that undergo long-distance migration and have strong biological toxicity are a great threat to the health of ecosystems. In this study, the biodegradation characteristics and combined effects of mixed PAHs in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) were studied. The results showed that, compared with a mono-carbon source, low-molecular-weight PAHs (LMW PAHs)-naphthalene (NAP) served as the co-substrate to promote the degradation of phenanthrene (PHE) and pyrene (PYR). The maximum degradation rates of PHE and PYR were 89.20% and 51.40% at 0.2500 mg/L in NAP-PHE and NAP-PYR at the degradation time of 120 h, respectively. Intermediate products were also detected, which indicated that the appending of relatively LMW PAHs had different effects on the metabolism of high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW PAHs). The microbe species under different substrates (NAP-B, PHE-B, PYR-B, NAP-PHE, NAP-PYR, PHE-PYR) are highly similar, although the structure of the microbial community changed on the anode in the BES. In this study, the degradation regularity of mixed PAHs in BES was studied and provided theoretical guidance for the effective co-degradation of PAHs in the environment.

A new perspective on marine assessment of metals and organic pollutants: A case study from Bay of Santander

Pollution assessment is worldwide generally performed based on 'Trend assessment' or 'Status assessment´, and usually requires monitoring programs that should be designed in terms of pollutants to be studied, frequency and locations. Five groups of pollutants: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and trace metals, were selected to evaluate how actual monitoring programs are coping with the evaluation of anthropogenic activities affect the environment and whether use restrictions and laws that ban certain pollutants are being effective. Santander Bay, in Northern Spain, is an industrial area with 250,000 inhabitants and with several rivers discharging into the Bay; those characteristics made the area an adequate location to perform the study. Marine sediment was selected as the study matrix since it gives comprehensive information regarding the human activities in coastal areas. The study clearly shows that there can be some potential biological impacts on the marine environment due to PAHs (mainly BghiP), PCBs (mainly congener CB118) and metals. On the other hand all analysed OCPs and PBDEs presented values below the applicable guidelines and will therefore, in principle, not give rise to environmental problems. Consequently, even after decades of banning and use restrictions, the studied pollutants are still a main issue in coastal areas. Moreover, the present study helps in the definition of future monitoring programs providing a complete description about the current situation of the listed pollutants.

Bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in wild marine fish from the coastal waters of the northern South China Sea: Risk assessment for human health

Little data are available on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine fish associated with oil and gas activities from the South China Sea (SCS). Twenty-one wild marine fish species from the northern South China Sea were collected for analysis of the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total concentration of the PAHs (∑₁₆PAHs) ranged from 199 to 606 ng·g^-1 d.w., indicating moderate contamination. PAHs in fish species found in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were significantly higher than those from the Yachen (YC) gas fields (p < 0.05). Planktivorous fish exhibited significantly higher concentrations of PAHs than carnivorous and omnivorous fish (p < 0.05). The PAHs were dominated by three ring compounds. Source identification analyses indicated that the PAH pollution originated from petroleum inputs. The cancer and non-cancer risk assessments concluded that the probable risk associated with the intake of PAHs via fish consumption is minimal. Long-term monitoring is necessary to determine the ecological impacts of PAHs associated with oil and gas activities.
