Occurrence, toxicity and transformation of six typical benzotriazoles in the environment: A review

Exposure to benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles in Czech male population and its associations with biomarkers of liver function, serum lipids and oxidative stress

INTRODUCTION

Benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles (BTs) are high-production volume chemicals as well as widely distributed emerging pollutants with potential health risk. However, information about human exposure to BTs and associated health outcomes is limited.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to characterise exposure to BTs among Czech men, including possible occupational exposure among firefighters, its predictors, and its associations with liver function, serum lipids and oxidative stress.

METHODS

165 participants (including 110 firefighters) provided urine and blood samples that were used to quantify the urinary levels of 8 BTs (high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry), and 4 liver enzymes, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. Linear regression was used to assess associations with population characteristics and biomarkers of liver function, serum lipids and oxidative stress. Regression models were adjusted for potential confounding variables and false discovery rate procedure was applied to account for multiplicity.

RESULTS

The BTs ranged from undetected up to 46.8 ng/mL. 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole was the most predominant compound (detection frequency 83%; median 1.95 ng/mL). 1-methyl-benzotriazole (1M-BTR) was measured in human samples for the first time, with a detection frequency 77% and median 1.75 ng/mL. Professional firefighters had lower urinary 1M-BTR compared to non-firefighters. Urinary 1M-BTR was associated with levels of γ-glutamyl transferase (β = - 17.54%; 95% CI: - 26.127, - 7.962).

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to investigate BT exposure in Central Europe, including potentially exposed firefighters. The findings showed a high prevalence of BTs in the study population, the relevance of 1M-BTR as a new biomarker of exposure, and an urgent need for further research into associated adverse health outcomes.

Associations between urinary concentrations of benzothiazole, benzotriazole, and their derivatives and lung cancer: A nested case-control study

Benzothiazole (BTH), benzotriazole (BTR), and their respective derivatives (BTHs and BTRs) are emerging environmental pollutants with widespread human exposure and oncogenic potential. Studies have demonstrated adverse effects of exposure to certain BTHs and BTRs on the respiratory system. However, no study has examined the associations between exposure to BTHs and BTRs and lung cancer risk. We aimed to examine the associations between urinary concentrations of BTHs and BTRs and the risk of lung cancer in the general population from Quzhou, China. We conducted a nested case-control study in an ongoing prospective Quzhou Environmental Exposure and Human Health (QEEHH) cohort, involving 20, 694 participants who provided urine samples during April 2019-July 2020. With monthly follow-up until November 2022, 212 lung cancer cases were recruited and 1:1 matched with healthy controls based on age and sex. We estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of lung cancer risk associated with urinary BTHs and BTRs concentrations using conditional logistic regression models after controlling for potential covariates. We also examined effect modification by several covariates, including sex, socioeconomic status, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and dietary habit. Creatinine-corrected urinary BTH and 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole (2-OH-BTH) levels were significantly associated with the risk of lung cancer, after adjusting for a variety of covariates. Participants in the highest quartile of BTH had a 95% higher risk of lung cancer, compared with those in the lowest quartile (adjusted OR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.08-3.49; p for trend = 0.01). Participants with higher levels of urinary 2-OH-BTH had an 83% higher risk of lung cancer than those with lower levels (adjusted OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.16-2.88; p for trend = 0.01). Exposure to elevated levels of BTH and 2-OH-BTH may be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. These associations were not modified by socio-demographic characteristics.

Comparative study of emerging pollutants of interest in the groundwater of the volcanic islands of La Palma and El Hierro (Canary Islands)

Emerging pollutants (EPs) include a wide array of chemical compounds, as well as some microorganisms, which presence was unknown or unmeasurable until recently, or have recently started to be considered a threat towards the environment or animal and human health. No clear or homogeneous regulations exist for their measurement or control, and efforts should be made to assess their presence and offer solutions for their safe management, as well as to achieve an optimal protection of water resources. A previous study performed by our research group thoroughly studied a wide profile of EPs in El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) for the first time. Now, we present the study of the same panel of 70 EPs in La Palma Island (Canary Islands). 14 samples were collected in 2021, at different locations in La Palma island, representing seven municipalities (Los Llanos de Aridane, Santa Cruz de la Palma, El Paso, Breña Baja, Tazacorte, Barlovento and Fuencaliente) and four installation types (Piezometers/Wells, Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), Water Gallery and Water Springs). High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was performed to analyse the EP array, which included five chemical families: UV filters, UV blockers/stabilizers, parabens, Pharmaceutical Active Compounds (PhACs) and pesticides. Subsequently, a comprehensive descriptive and statistical analysis, including different tests was performed on the data obtained. Heterogeneous concentration levels of the EPs studied were found based on municipality and installation type among the island, with some of the PhACs and UV blockers/stabilizers showing very high levels, especially at Breña Baja and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). It is worth noting that some of the samples comprised within the WWTPs category were collected outside the treatment plant, after water has been treated, so they should not bear dangerous concentrations of any hazardous compound. The high presence of two pesticides, imidacloprid (ranging from 68.7 to 24,896.5 ng⋅L-1) and acetamiprid (ranging from 1010.7 to 5168.1 ng⋅L-1) was worth highlighting too. In addition, three EP concentration clusters were found to virtually divide the island based on mathematical percentiles of EP mean concentrations, which can help gain more insight into the contamination status of the island and measures that could be taken for their management. Finally, a comparison between La Palma results and the profile observed at El Hierro by our research group was presented. Altogether, the study performed calls for a need to take actions towards avoiding entrance of EPs in the water cycle, and not just focusing on remediation strategies once they have reached the groundwater, freshwater or soil.

Grouping strategies for assessing and managing persistent and mobile substances

Background

Persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT), or very persistent and very mobile (vPvM) substances are a wide class of chemicals that are recalcitrant to degradation, easily transported, and potentially harmful to humans and the environment. Due to their persistence and mobility, these substances are often widespread in the environment once emitted, particularly in water resources, causing increased challenges during water treatment processes. Some PMT/vPvM substances such as GenX and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid have been identified as substances of very high concern (SVHCs) under the European Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation. With hundreds to thousands of potential PMT/vPvM substances yet to be assessed and managed, effective and efficient approaches that avoid a case-by-case assessment and prevent regrettable substitution are necessary to achieve the European Union's zero-pollution goal for a non-toxic environment by 2050.

Main

Substance grouping has helped global regulation of some highly hazardous chemicals, e.g., through the Montreal Protocol and the Stockholm Convention. This article explores the potential of grouping strategies for identifying, assessing and managing PMT/vPvM substances. The aim is to facilitate early identification of lesser-known or new substances that potentially meet PMT/vPvM criteria, prompt additional testing, avoid regrettable use or substitution, and integrate into existing risk management strategies. Thus, this article provides an overview of PMT/vPvM substances and reviews the definition of PMT/vPvM criteria and various lists of PMT/vPvM substances available. It covers the current definition of groups, compares the use of substance grouping for hazard assessment and regulation, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of grouping substances for regulation. The article then explores strategies for grouping PMT/vPvM substances, including read-across, structural similarity and commonly retained moieties, as well as the potential application of these strategies using cheminformatics to predict P, M and T properties for selected examples.

Conclusions

Effective substance grouping can accelerate the assessment and management of PMT/vPvM substances, especially for substances that lack information. Advances to read-across methods and cheminformatics tools are needed to support efficient and effective chemical management, preventing broad entry of hazardous chemicals into the global market and favouring safer and more sustainable alternatives.

The triple exposure nexus of microplastic particles, plastic-associated chemicals, and environmental pollutants from a human health perspective

The presence of microplastics (MPs) is increasing at a dramatic rate globally, posing risks for exposure and subsequent potential adverse effects on human health. Apart from being physical objects, MP particles contain thousands of plastic-associated chemicals (i.e., monomers, chemical additives, and non-intentionally added substances) captured within the polymer matrix. These chemicals are often migrating from MPs and can be found in various environmental matrices and human food chains; increasing the risks for exposure and health effects. In addition to the physical and chemical attributes of MPs, plastic surfaces effectively bind exogenous chemicals, including environmental pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants). Therefore, MPs can act as vectors of environmental pollution across air, drinking water, and food, further amplifying health risks posed by MP exposure. Critically, fragmentation of plastics in the environment increases the risk for interactions with cells, increases the presence of available surfaces to leach plastic-associated chemicals, and adsorb and transfer environmental pollutants. Hence, this review proposes the so-called triple exposure nexus approach to comprehensively map existing knowledge on interconnected health effects of MP particles, plastic-associated chemicals, and environmental pollutants. Based on the available data, there is a large knowledge gap in regard to the interactions and cumulative health effects of the triple exposure nexus. Each component of the triple nexus is known to induce genotoxicity, inflammation, and endocrine disruption, but knowledge about long-term and inter-individual health effects is lacking. Furthermore, MPs are not readily excreted from organisms after ingestion and they have been found accumulated in human blood, cardiac tissue, placenta, etc. Even though the number of studies on MPs-associated health impacts is increasing rapidly, this review underscores that there is a pressing necessity to achieve an integrated assessment of MPs' effects on human health in order to address existing and future knowledge gaps.

Insights into the effect of benzotriazoles in liver using integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis

Benzotriazoles (BTRs) are a class of benzoheterocyclic chemicals that are frequently used as metal-corrosive inhibitors, both in industry and daily use. However, the exposure effect information on BTRs remains relatively limited. In this study, an integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic approach was utilized to evaluate the effect of three BTRs, benzotriazole, 6-chloro-1-hydroxi-benzotriazole, and 1-hydroxy-benzotriazole, in the mouse liver with results showing disrupted basal metabolic processes and vitamin and cofactor metabolism after 28 days. The expression of several genes that are related to the inflammatory response and aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathways, such as Gstt2 and Arntl, was altered by the exposure to BTRs. Exposure to BTRs also affected metabolites and genes that are involved in the immune system and xenobiotic responses. The altered expression of several cytochrome P450 family genes reveal a potential detoxification mechanism in the mouse liver. Taken together, our findings provide new insights into the multilayer response of the mouse liver to BTRs exposure as well as a resource for further exploration of the molecular mechanisms by which the response occurs.

Spatiotemporal variation, partitioning, and ecological risk assessment of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles, and benzotriazole UV absorbers in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent area

The distributions and toxicities of the pollutants benzothiazoles (BTHs), benzotriazoles (BTRs), and benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVs) have attracted much attention, but most research has focused on freshwater environments and few have examined their levels in marine environments. This study, for the first time, investigated the spatial and temporal variability and ecological risks of BTHs, BTRs and BUVs in the Yangtze River estuary and its adjacent area, and further elucidated how environmental factors influence the transport of these contaminants. The concentrations of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in seawater showed significant seasonal variability, with the highest concentrations in summer, followed by autumn, and then winter-spring. The spatiotemporal variability in BTHs, BTRs and BUVs in the seawater and sediments samples showed decreasing trends from nearshore to offshore, reflecting the influence of river discharge. Marine debris and continuous discharge from cities were responsible for the high detection frequency of these contaminants in the YRE and its adjacent area. Furthermore, the moderate risk from the presence of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs as they accumulate in sediments should not be ignored. Our study provides new insights into the fate and ecological risk of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in the estuary.

Deleterious effects of benzotriazoles on zebrafish development and neurotransmission: 5-Chloro-benzotriazole versus 1H-benzotriazole

Benzotriazoles are heterocyclic compounds typically presenting a benzene ring fused with a triazole molecule. The industry uses these compounds as anti-corrosion agents and recently, they have been employed in the pharmaceutical industry and in detergent formulations. Benzotriazoles persist in the environment, and water treatment plants cannot degrade them completely. Consequently, these compounds have been detected in rivers, lakes, and drinking water, which makes assessing their safety for the human and aquatic animal populations crucial. Here, we have evaluated and compared how exposure to 1H-benzotriazole or 5-chloro-benzotriazole affect the zebrafish embryo-larval stages. We have determined the acute toxicity, morphometric alterations, and acetylcholinesterase activity on zebrafish embryos, as well as behavioral endpoints using the tail coiling assay. The estimated LC50 of 5-chloro-benzotriazole was 19 mg/L, whereas 1H-benzotriazole caused no mortality. The zebrafish embryos exposed to 20 and 25 mg/L 5-chloro-benzotriazole had decreased hatching rate and exhibited pericardial and yolk sac edemas. Furthermore, the embryo length and eye area were decreased, in contrast with an increased yolk sac after exposure to 20 mg/L 5-chloro-benzotriazole. In turn, 1H-benzotriazole also decreased the eye area of zebrafish embryos, but no other significant morphological alterations were observed. The tail coiling assay showed that the zebrafish embryos increased the percentage of time moving and the number of embryonic movements per minute after exposure to 1H-benzotriazole (15 mg/L) or 5-chloro-benzotriazole (20 and 25 mg/L), indicating that these compounds were potentially neurotoxic. However, acetylcholinesterase activity was not significantly altered in embryos exposed to 1H-benzotriazole, but significantly decreased when exposed to 0.05 mg/L 5-chloro benzotriazole confirming its neurotoxicity at a much lower concentration. Our findings showed that 5-chloro-benzotriazole seems to induce more harmful alterations to zebrafish embryos than 1H-benzotriazole. Nevertheless, 1H-benzotriazole seems to induce a direct effect on eye development for concentrations lower than the ones of 5-chloro-benzotriazole affecting zebrafish embryos.

Solar photocatalysis application in UWWTP outlets - simulations based on predictive models in flat-plate reactors and pollutant degradation studies with in silico toxicity assessment

The application of the solar photocatalysis for the degradation of residual pollutants found in surface water was demonstrated. Semi-pilot scale flat-plate cascade reactor (FPCR) was used to study the degradation of model organic pollutants: enrofloxacin (ENRO), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 1H-benzotriazole (1H-BT) over TiO2 thin-film supported on glass fibers. A modular panel with full-spectra solar lamps with appropriate UVB and UVA irradiation levels was used as a simulation of sunlight. Pollutant degradation in FPCR was estimated using predictive models; intrinsic reaction rate constants (ki) for ENRO, E2 and 1H-BT independent of the reactor size, flow rate and irradiation conditions were determined: 9.60, 3.35 and 0.37 109 s-1 W-0.5 m1.5, respectively. Main degradation products (DPs), formed upon hydroxylation, ring opening and oxidation, were identified using LC-QTOF-MS. The ecotoxicological impact was assessed via T.E.S.T. and ECOSAR open-source tools showing the formation of less harmful DPs after sufficient reaction time. Pollutant degradation was simulated at four locations of interest, i.e. exhausts from urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs) in Zagreb, Croatia (45°N), Krakow, Poland (50°N), Sevilla, Spain (37°N) and Ioannina, Greece (39.6°N). Results have proved that a simple flat-plate system with supported photocatalysts can be easily scaled up and incorporated at the outlet of UWWTP for the reduction of pollutant load and related toxicity. The exhaust canal in Zagreb with the estimated length of a photocatalytic layer of 122 m for the > 90% degradation of all target pollutants was discussed as the best installation site among studied locations. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: A multi-disciplinary approach to the tentative application of TiO2 solar photocatalysis outdoors to reduce pollutant loads and toxicity in surface waters was demonstrated. Possible application at four selected locations in Europe, as an additional step in water treatment after urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs) was discussed. Target pollutants were studied under environmentally relevant conditions (sunlight levels, water matrix, simulation of process on a real scale at selected geographical location), at both higher and low concentrations.

Leaching and transformation of chemical additives from weathered plastic deployed in the marine environment

Plastic pollution causes detrimental environmental impacts, which are increasingly attributed to chemical additives. However, the behaviour of plastic additives in the marine environment is poorly understood. We used a marine deployment experiment to examine the impact of weathering on the extractables profile, analysed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, of four plastics at two locations over nine months in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The concentration of additives in polyethylene and oxo-degradable polyethylene were strongly influenced by artificial weathering, with deployment location and time less influential. By comparison, polyamide 6 and polyethylene terephthalate were comparatively inert with minimal change in response to artificial weathering or deployment time. Non-target analysis revealed extensive differentiation between non-aged and aged polyethylene after deployment, concordant with the targeted analysis. These observations highlight the need to consider the impact of leaching and weathering on plastic composition when quantifying the potential impact and risk of plastic pollution within receiving environments.

Spatial distribution, partitioning, and ecological risk assessment of benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and benzotriazole UV absorbers in the eastern shelf seas of China

Benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), and benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVs) have attracted increasing attention due to their ubiquity in the environment, toxicity, and potential ecological risks. However, information on their distributions in the ocean is scarce. In this study, BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were firstly determined in the surface seawater, sea-surface microlayer (SML), suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments of the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS). The spatial distributions of BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs in the YS and ECS showed offshore decreasing trend in their concentrations, indicating that terrestrial inputs from runoff and rivers had important influences on their distributions. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficients (log Koc) of target contaminants in surface seawater-SPM (3.06-4.16 L/g) and bottom seawater-sediment (2.55-4.82 L/kg) systems were determined. SPM showed greater sorption capacities for most target contaminants than the sediment. The burial capacities of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs from SPM to surface sediments were evaluated using their respective log Kow values and their sedimentary fluxes in the YS and ECS were quantified. BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were enriched in the SML, with the enrichment extents of the suspended particulate phase being obviously lower than those of the dissolved phase. The ecological risks of BTRs, BTHs, and BUVs were evaluated using the risk quotient (RQ) method, which showed no toxic risk to aquatic organisms throughout the water phases, but high risk in nearshore sediments.

Benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVs) as an emerging contaminant of concern: a review

Benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVs) are a group of industrial chemicals used in various consumer products and industrial applications. Due to its large-scale production and use, BUVs have been detected in all environmental matrices. Humans are exposed to BUVs from environmental media, food, personal care products (PCPs), and consumer products. As a result, BUVs are detected in human breast milk, attracting researchers and regulatory bodies worldwide. BUVs such as UV-328 exhibit the characteristics of persistent organic pollutants (POPs); hence, it has been recently listed under Stockholm Convention POP list. The current review focuses on the occurrence of BUVs in the environment with emphasis on persistency, bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT). Scarcity of scientific data on BUVs' properties, environmental occurrence, exposure levels, and effects on organisms poses significant challenges to the policymakers and regulatory bodies in adopting management strategies. The need for a science-based integrated framework for risk assessment and management of BUVs is recommended. Considering the potential threat of BUVs to human health and the environment, it is recommended that BUVs should be taken as a subject of priority research. Studies on the degradation and transformation route of BUVs need to be explored for the sound management of BUVs.

Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Cu-OMS-2 Nanofibers for Efficient Degradation of N-Containing Heterocycles in Aquatic Solution

In this research, the degradation of different types of N-containing heterocycle (NHC) contaminants by Cu-OMS-2 via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in an aqueous environment was investigated. First, the effects of different reaction parameters were optimized using benzotriazole (BTR) as the model contaminant, and the optimal reaction conditions were 8 mM PMS, 0.35 g/L Cu-OMS-2, and 30 °C. Nine different types of NHC contaminants were effectively degraded under these reaction conditions, and the degradation efficiencies and the mineralization rates of those NHCs were more than 68 and 46%, respectively. Moreover, the Cu-OMS-2/PMS process presented excellent performance at a wide pH ranging from 3.0 to 11.0 and in the presence of some representative anions (NO3- and SO42-) and dissolved organic matter (fumaric acid). The inhibition sequence of anions on BTR removal during the Cu-OMS-2/PMS process was H2PO4- > HCO3- > Cl- > CO32- > NO3- > SO42-. It was also found that 74.5 and 71.3% BTR degradation rates were achieved in actual water bodies, such as tap water and Yellow River water, respectively. Besides, the Cu-OMS-2 heterogeneous catalyst had excellent stability and reusability, and the degradation rate of BTR was still at 77.0% after 5 cycles. Finally, electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and scavenging tests showed that 1O2 and SO4- • were the primary reactive oxygen species. Accordingly, Cu-OMS-2 nanomaterial was an efficient and sustainable heterogeneous catalyst to activate PMS for the decontamination of BTR in water remediation.

Limitations of conventional approaches to identify photochemically produced reactive intermediates involved in contaminant indirect photodegradation

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) mediated indirect photodegradation can play an important role in the degradation of aquatic contaminants. Predicting the rate of this process requires knowledge of the photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRI) that react with the compound of interest, as well as the ability of individual DOM samples to produce PPRI. Key PPRI are typically identified using quencher studies, yet this approach often leads to results that are difficult to interpret. In this work, we analyze the indirect photodegradation of atorvastatin, carbamazepine, sulfadiazine, and benzotriazole using a diverse set of 48 waters from natural and engineered aquatic systems. We use this large data set to evaluate relationships between PPRI formation and indirect photodegradation rate constants, which are directly compared to results using standard quenching experiments. These data demonstrate that triplet state DOM (3DOM) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are critical PPRI for atorvastatin, carbamazepine, and sulfadiazine, while hydroxyl radical (˙OH) contributes to the indirect photodegradation of benzotriazole. We caution against relying on quenching studies because quenching of 3DOM limits the formation of 1O2 and all studied quenchers react with ˙OH. Furthermore, we show that DOM composition directly influences indirect photodegradation and that low molecular weight, microbial-like DOM is positively correlated with the indirect photodegradation rates of carbamazepine, sulfadiazine, and benzotriazole.

Impact of accelerated weathering on the leaching kinetics of stabiliser additives from microplastics

The release of additives from microplastics is known to harm organisms. In the environment, microplastics are exposed to weathering processes which are suspected to influence additive leaching kinetics, the extent and mechanism of which remain poorly understood. We examined the impact of weathering on stabiliser additive leaching kinetics using environmentally relevant accelerated weathering and leaching procedures. Nine binary polymer-additive formulations were specifically prepared, weathered, analysed, and evaluated for their leaching characteristics. Cumulative additive release (Ce) varied widely between formulations, ranging from 0.009 to 1162 µg/g. Values of Ce generally increased by polymer type in the order polyethylene terephthalate < polyamide 6 < polyethylene. The change in leaching kinetics after accelerated weathering was incongruous across the nine formulations, with a significant change in Ce only observed for three out of nine formulations. Physicochemical characterisation of the microplastics demonstrated that additive blooming was the primary mechanism influencing the leaching response to weathering. These findings highlight the dependency of additive fate on the polymer type, additive chemistry, and the extent of weathering exposure. This has significant implications for risk assessment and mitigation, where the general assumption that polymer weathering increases additive leaching may be too simplistic.

Profiling of the spatiotemporal distribution, risks, and prioritization of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in coastal waters of the northern Yellow Sea, China

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have aroused global concerns due to their ubiquitous occurrence and detrimental effects. The spatiotemporal distributions of 64 PPCPs and their synergetic ecological risks were comprehensively investigated in the seawater of Yantai Bay, and 1 H-benzotriazole (BT), ethenzamide, phenazone, propyphenazone, 4-hydroxybenzophenone and N, N'-diphenylurea were first determined in the seawater of China. Fifty-six PPCPs were detected and their concentrations were 27.5-182 ng/L, with BT contributing around 58.0%. Higher PPCP concentrations were observed in winter and spring, with the concentrations of antioxidants, analgesic/anti-inflammatory drugs and human-used antibiotics significantly higher in winter, while those of aquaculture-used antibiotics and UV filters significantly higher in summer, which was closely related with their usage patterns. Positive correlations were observed for PPCP concentrations between surface and bottom water, except summer, during which time the weak vertical exchange and varied environmental behaviors among different PPCPs resulted in the distinct compositions and concentrations. Terrestrial inputs and mariculture resulted in higher PPCP concentrations in the area located adjacent to the coast and aquaculture bases. The PPCP mixtures posed medium to high risk to crustaceans, and bisphenol A was identified as a high-risk pollutant that needs special attention.

Tracking contaminants of concern in wet-weather sanitary sewer overflows

Four representative sites in the greater city of Sydney, Australia, were selected for a study of the wet-weather overflow of sanitary (separate to stormwater) sewerage systems. Water samples were collected by autosamplers from up to eight wet weather overflow events over 16 months and from companion receiving water sites. The objective was to identify the risks posed by sewage contaminants to aquatic biota in the receiving waters, to aid in prioritising management actions. Twelve organic contaminants were identified in influents across the four sites under rainfall ingress diluted conditions, with measurements showing that the highest concentrations were restricted to the anti-inflammatory acetaminophen and the diabetes medication metformin. Lesser contaminants included theobromine, ibuprofen, sucralose, and three benzotriazoles (mainly 1-H benzotriazole). An assessment of the toxicity of the identified organic chemicals indicated that none appeared to pose concerns for ecosystem health before wet-weather ingress dilution, and this was even less likely after dilution in the receiving waters. Metal concentrations were low; however, ammonia concentrations in the influent did pose a risk to ecosystem health, although receiving water dilution diminished this risk at four of the five receiving water locations studied.

International Comparison, Risk Assessment, and Prioritisation of 26 Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Three European River Catchments in the UK, Ireland, and Spain

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) constitute a wide variety of chemistries with diverse properties that may/can pose risks to both humans and the environment. Herein, a total of 26 compounds, including steroids, flame retardants, and plasticizers, were monitored in three major and heavily urbanized river catchments: the R. Liffey (Ireland), the R. Thames (UK), and the R. Ter (Spain), by using a single solid-phase extraction liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS) method. Occurrence and frequency rates were investigated across all locations over a 10-week period, with the highest concentration obtained for the flame retardant tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) at 4767 ng∙L-1 in the R. Thames in Central London. Geographical variations were observed between sites and were partially explained using principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). In particular, discrimination between the R. Ter and the R. Thames was observed based on the presence and concentration of flame retardants, benzotriazole, and steroids. Environmental risk assessment (ERA) across sites showed that caffeine, a chemical marker, and bisphenol A (BPA), a plasticizer, were classified as high-risk for the R. Liffey and R. Thames, based on relative risk quotients (rRQs), and that caffeine was classified as high-risk for the R. Ter, based on RQs. The total risks at each location, namely ΣRQriver, and ΣrRQriver, were: 361, 455, and 723 for the rivers Liffey, Thames, and Ter, respectively. Caffeine, as expected, was ubiquitous in all 3 urban areas, though with the highest RQ observed in the R. Ter. High contributions of BPA were also observed across the three matrices. Therefore, these two compounds should be prioritized independently of location. This study represents a comprehensive EDC monitoring comparison between different European cities based on a single analytical method, which allowed for a geographically independent ERA prioritization to be performed.

Removal of benzotriazole micropollutants using Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. And Azolla caroliniana Willd

Phytoremediation of benzotriazoles (BTR) from waters by floating macrophytes is not well understood, but it seems to have the potential to be used in conjunction with conventional wastewater treatment plants. The effectiveness of removing four compounds from the benzotriazole group by floating plants Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid. And Azolla caroliniana Willd. From the model solution, was studied. The observed decrease in the concentration of studied compounds was in the range 70.5%-94.5% using S. polyrhiza, and from 88.3% to 96.2% for A. caroliniana. It was determined using chemometric methods that the effectiveness of the phytoremediation process is mainly influenced by three parameters: exposure time to light, pH of the model solution and the mass of plants. Using the design of experiments (DoE) chemometric approach, the optimal conditions for removing BTR were selected: plant weight 2.5 g and 2 g, light exposure 16 h and 10 h, and pH 9 and pH 5 for S. polyrhiza and A. caroliniana, respectively. Studies on the mechanisms of BTR removal have shown that the reduction in concentration is mainly due to the process of plant uptake. Toxicity studies have proved that the tested BTR affected the growth of S. polyrhiza and A. caroliniana and induced changes in the levels of chlorophyllides, chlorophylls as well as carotenoids. More dramatic loss in plant biomass and photosynthetic pigment contents was observed in A. caroliniana cultures exposed to BTR.

Performance and Mechanism of Functionalized Water Hyacinth Biochar for Adsorption and Removal of Benzotriazole and Lead in Water

In this paper, water hyacinth is used to prepare biochar (WBC). A biochar-aluminum-zinc-layered double hydroxide composite functional material (WL) is synthesized via a simple co-precipitation method which is used to adsorb and remove benzotriazole (BTA) and lead (Pb²⁺) in an aqueous solution. In particular, this research paper uses various characterization methods to analyze WL and to explore the adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism of WL on BTA and Pb²⁺ in an aqueous solution through batch adsorption experiments combined with model fitting and spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the surface of WL contains a thick sheet-like structure with many wrinkles which would provide many adsorption sites for pollutants. At room temperature (25 °C), the maximum adsorption capacities of WL on BTA and Pb²⁺ are 248.44 mg·g^-1 and 227.13 mg·g^-1, respectively. In a binary system, during the process of using WL to adsorb BTA and Pb²⁺, compared with that in the absorption on Pb²⁺, WL shows a stronger affinity in the adsorption on BTA, and BTA would thus be preferred in the absorption process. The adsorption process of WL on BTA and Pb²⁺ is spontaneous and is endothermic monolayer chemisorption. In addition, the adsorption of WL on BTA and Pb²⁺ involves many mechanisms, but the main adsorption mechanisms are different. Among them, hydrogen bonding dominates the adsorption on BTA, while functional groups (C-O and C=O) complexation dominates the adsorption on Pb²⁺. When WL adsorbs BTA and Pb²⁺, the coexistence of cations (K⁺, Na⁺, and Ca²⁺) has a strong anti-interference ability, and WL can use a lower concentration of fulvic acid (FA) (<20 mg·L^-1) to improve its adsorption performance. Last but not least, WL has a stable regenerative performance in a one-component system and a binary system, which indicates that WL has excellent potential for the remediation of BTA and Pb²⁺ in water.

First emerging pollutants profile in groundwater of the volcanic active island of El Hierro (Canary Islands)

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are substances present in wastewater that have not been studied, previously, leading to ambiguity in regulations for their presence in water resources. Territories that are highly dependent on groundwater resources are at a high risk of suffering the consequences of EP contamination due to their dependence on good quality groundwater for agriculture, drinking, and other uses. A relevant example is El Hierro (Canary Islands), which was declared a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO in 2000 and is almost completely powered by renewable energies. Using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, the concentrations of 70 EPs were assessed at 19 sampling points on El Hierro. The results indicated that no pesticides were present in groundwater; however, varied concentration levels of ultraviolet (UV) filters, UV stabilizers/blockers and pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) were found, with La Frontera being the most contaminated municipality. With regard to the different installation types, piezometers and wells were the ones showing the highest concentrations for most EPs. Interestingly, the depth of sampling correlated positively with EP concentration, and four different clusters virtually dividing the island into two areas could be identified based on the presence of each EP. More studies should be performed to ascertain why a few of the EPs showed considerably high concentrations at different depths. The results obtained highlight the need to, not only implement remediation measures once EPs have reached the soil and aquifers, but also to avoid their incorporation into the water cycle via homes, animal husbandry, agriculture, industry, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Extraction of selected benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and benzenesulfonamides from environmental water samples using a home-made sol-gel silica-based mixed-mode zwitterionic sorbent modified with graphene

A novel sol-gel silica-based mixed-mode zwitterionic sorbent modified with graphene microparticles was synthesized. Thanks to the inclusion of multiple functional groups and graphene microparticles to exert a wide range of intermolecular/interionic interactions including dipole-dipole interactions, ion-exchange interactions and π-π interactions, the sorbent showed high retention in the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and benzenesulfonamides. The SPE protocol was optimized in terms of pH, sample loading volume and elution conditions using liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). The method based on SPE followed by LC-HRMS was validated. Apparent recoveries at two levels of concentration were in the range from 48 to 85% (in most cases) in matrices such as influent wastewater, matrix effect was lower than ±30% in most cases, method detection and quantification limits being lower than 20 ng/L and repeatability and reproducibility between days were lower than 18% (n = 4). River, effluent and influent wastewaters samples were analyzed, obtaining concentrations ranging from 3 to 175 ng/L in river samples, from 12 to 499 ng/L in effluent samples and from 15 to 632 ng/L in influent samples, when the compounds were above the method quantification limits.

Chemicals of emerging concern in coastal aquifers: Assessment along the land-ocean interface

Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) is recognized as a relevant source of pollutants to the sea, but little is known about its relevance as a source of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs). Here, both the presence and distribution of a wide range of CECs have been evaluated in the most comprehensive manner to date, in a well-characterized Mediterranean coastal aquifer near Barcelona (Spain). Samples from coastal groundwater and seawater allowed for the unique spatial characterization of the pollutants present in the land-ocean interface, an outstanding research gap that required attention. The main goals were (1) to determine CECs in the aquifer, so as to evaluate the SGD as a relevant source of marine pollution, and (2) to identify new tracers to improve our understanding of SGD dynamics. To this end, 92 CECs were located in the aquifer by using wide-scope analytical target methodologies (>2000 chemicals). Among them, the perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), along with the pharmaceuticals carbamazepine and topiramate, were revealed to be good markers for tracing anthropogenic contamination in ground- and seawater, in concrete situations (e.g., highly contaminated sites). Additionally, non-target analysis expanded the number of potential tracers, making it a promising tool for identifying both the source and the fate of pollutants.

Transgenerational effects of benzotriazole on the gene expression, growth, and reproduction of Daphnia magna

Due to its widespread and intensive use as a corrosion inhibitor, benzotriazole is ubiquitously detected from a few parts per billion to several hundred parts per million in aquatic environments. The long-term toxicity of benzotriazole is unclear despite its low acute toxicity. Therefore, we investigated the transgenerational effects of benzotriazole at the genomic and individual levels using the freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna. Maternal exposure to sublethal concentrations (15 and 30 mg/L) of benzotriazole exerted transgenerational effects on D. magna at the genomic and individual levels even in descendants that have never been exposed to benzotriazole. Significant alterations in the expression of Cyp, GST, Vtg1, and Hb and in neonate size were observed in the unexposed F3 generation, confirming the transgenerational effect of benzotriazole. Interestingly, detoxification related genes Cyp and GST were unaffected or downregulated in the exposed generation but upregulated in the following unexposed generations. Furthermore, continuous multigenerational exposure to an environmental concentration (4.3 μg/L) of benzotriazole also upregulated detoxification genes in decent generations but exerted no individual-level effects in subsequent generations.

Assessment of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and benzenesulfonamides in environmental waters using an optimized combination of microextraction by packed sorbent with programmed temperature vaporization-gas chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry

This work proposes a new method for the quantification of benzothiazoles (BTs), benzotriazoles (BTRs), and benzenesulfonamides (BSAs) in tap water, river water, and wastewater. The protocol involved the use of microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), applied for the first time for the extraction of the target analytes, combined with programmed temperature vaporization-gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (PTV-GC-QqQ-MS). Considering the synergism between MEPS extraction and PTV injection, the experimental variables affecting their performance were simultaneously optimized by "experimental design", while principal component analysis (PCA) was used to find the overall optimal working conditions. Response surface methodology was used to gain a comprehensive understanding of the effects of working variables on method performance. The developed method achieved very good linearities and satisfactory intra- and inter-day accuracies and precisions. The protocol permitted the detection of the target molecules with limit of detection (LODs) values between 0.005 and 0.85 μg/L. The green character of the procedure was evaluated using three metrics: "Analytical Eco-Scale", "Green Analytical Procedure Index" (GAPI), and "Analytical Greenness metric for sample preparation (AGREEprep). The satisfactory results obtained with real water samples demonstrate the applicability of the method for monitoring campaigns and exposome studies.

Determination of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and benzenesulfonamides in seafood using quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe extraction followed by gas chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry: Method development and risk assessment

The common use of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and benzenesulfonamides has led to widespread ubiquity in several environmental matrices. Their occurrence in edible fish could represent an additional exposure route for the population. The present study aims to develop a method for the simultaneous determination of these three compound families in seafood samples. Based on QuEChERS extraction, different salt combinations and clean-up strategies have been evaluated to achieve the highest recoveries while reducing the matrix effect in low and high lipidic content species. The best results were obtained with the original method salts and the lipid-selective push-through clean-up, which combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry led to recoveries between 50 and 112% with negligible matrix effects and method detection limits between 0.15-9.50 ng g^-1 dw. The application of the method to commercially available samples confirmed the presence of BTs as well as BSAs, with the latter being determined in seafood for the first time. Exposure and risk assessment calculations indicated a minor risk for the population when consuming fish.

Mechanistic insight into the degradation of 1H-benzotriazole and 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole by •OH-based advanced oxidation process and toxicity assessment

Benzotriazoles (BTs) are highly produced chemicals that are commonly used in the manufacture of aircraft de-icing/antifreeze fluids (ADAFs), coolants, etc. BTs have been detected in a variety of water environments, causing health hazards to aquatic species and humans. In this study, 1H-benzotriazole (BTri) and 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (4-TTri) were selected to investigate their degradation mechanisms in the aqueous phase initiated by ·OH using a theoretical calculation method. Addition reactions are the main type of reactions of ·OH with BTri and 4-TTri. The total rate constants for the reactions of BTri and 4-TTri with ·OH at 298 K are 8.26 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1 and 1.81 × 10¹⁰ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. The reaction rate constants increase as the temperature rises, indicating that rising temperatures promote the degradation of BTri and 4-TTri. 7-hydroxy-1H-benzotriazole (1-P1) and 4-hydroxy-benzotriazoles (1-P2) produced via multiple reaction pathways are important transformation products of BTri. After successive reactions with ·OH, 1-P1 and 1-P2 can be successively converted to 4,7-dihydroxy-1H-benzotriazole (1-P7), 4,7-dione-1H-benzotriazole (1-P8), and 1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (1-P9), which is consistent with the product compositions detected in the experiments. The toxicity assessment indicated that the acute toxicity and chronic toxicity of the resulting transformation products are significantly reduced compared to BTri as the degradation process progressed, and ultimately showed no harm to all three aquatic organisms (fish, daphnia, and green algae). Hence, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can not only effectively remove BTs from water, but also reduce their toxic effects on aquatic organisms.

Contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Indonesia

This study provides the first set of quantitative data on the occurrence and fate of a wide range of contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) in Indonesia's largest wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP employs waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) as the secondary treatment before discharging the effluent to the Citarum River. Fourteen out of twenty-two monitored CECs were detected in the wastewater influent, and seven were present in the effluent, with a total concentration of 29.8 ± 0.4 µg/L and 0.5 ± 0.0 µg/L, respectively. The occurrence of the CECs in this study was found to be well correlated with their possible use and known detection in surface waters in Indonesia. Caffeine (CAF) at 12.2 ± 0.1 µg/L, acetaminophen (ACT) at 9.1 ± 0.1 µg/L, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) at 5.0 ± 0.1 µg/L, ibuprofen (IBU) at 2.3 ± 0.0 µg/L, and triclosan (TCS) at 470 ± 64 ng/L were discovered as the five most prevalent CECs, followed by bisphenol A (BPA), trimethoprim (TMP), Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), sulfamethazine (SMZ), carbamazepine (CBZ), fluoxetine (FLX), benzotriazole (BTA), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and metformin (METF). Biodegradable CECs (SMX, SMZ, ACT, IBU, TCS, BPA, CAF, DEET, and TMP) were efficiently removed (83-100%) by the WSP. In contrast, recalcitrant CECs achieved poor removal efficiencies (e.g., FLX at 24%), and for others, treatment processes even resulted in elevated concentrations in the effluent (CBZ by 85%, TCEP by 149%, and BTA by 92%). The CECs' influent concentrations were determined to pose a moderate aquatic cumulative risk, while no such risk was associated with their effluent concentrations. The study demonstrates the importance of conventional WWTPs in reducing the concentrations of CECs to minimize their aquatic contamination risk. The findings are relevant for countries, such as Indonesia, with limited resources for advanced centralized wastewater treatments, and which are exploring the efficacy of centralized WSP against the existing decentralized treatments.

Simultaneous evaluation of benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles and benzenesulfonamides in water samples from the impacted urban Jacarepaguá Lagoon System (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) by liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray tandem mass spectrometry

Benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and benzenesulfonamides are emerging pollutants stable in aquatic media emitted by anthropogenic sources. Selected compounds of these classes were evaluated in the impacted urban Jacarepaguá Lagoon System (JLS) located in a tropical coastal region of Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil that has experienced a rapid expansion of urban occupation and environmental degradation in recent decades, and it represents a pioneering study of these compounds carried out in Brazilian areas. A method of solid phase extraction followed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray tandem mass-spectrometry was implemented to evaluate water samples collected in different water bodies (rivers, lagoons, and channels) of the JLS from March 2017 to May 2018. Limits of quantification (LOQs) ≤ 10.0 ng L^-1, method linearity up to 1000 μg L^-1, and recoveries between 62 and 121 % at three different levels were obtained. Individual concentrations varied from < LOQ to 5260 ng L^-1 (benzotriazole, in May 2018) which also predominated in all river samples. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole predominated in samples taken in lagoons and channels in March 2017, and 2-aminobenzothiazole was never detected. River samples showed total concentrations up to 30 times larger in all sampling campaigns, except March 2017 when the sample taken at Tijuca Lagoon showed the largest total concentration of the compounds studied due to the largest concentration of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2505 ng L^-1) found in this study. Principal component analysis (PCA) using only composition data was unable to distinguish samples from rivers, and lagoons and channels, but a PCA combining composition data and environmental parameters (pH, Eh, dissolved O₂ concentration, temperature, salinity, and conductivity) discriminated the samples according to two groups: rivers and lagoons and channels. The Joá Channel flows directly to the open sea and our data allowed a (preliminary) estimation of the total mass flows of the studied compounds to the open sea, which would vary between 1702 g day^-1 (March 2017) to 106 g day^-1 (May 2018) and allowed a preliminary estimative based on the geometric mean of input of 87.9 kg year^-1, indicating the importance of the drainage area to the contamination of the coastal area, and consequently to ocean pollution.

Occurrence and removal of benzotriazole and benzothiazole in drinking water treatment plants

The occurrence and removal of four benzotriazoles (BTRs) and five benzothiazoles (BTHs) in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and bottled water were investigated. The mean total BTR and BTH concentrations were 390 and 117 ng/L in raw water, 51.2 and 66.5 ng/L in treated water, and 0.758 and 48.4 ng/L in bottled water, respectively. Different distribution patterns were observed according to the water type, with the dominant BTR being 1H-BTR (mean: 57.8%) in raw water and a predominance of BTH in bottled water (mean: 84.6%). In the DWTPs, the mean removal of BTRs (90.9%) was better than that of BTHs (29.3%). The BTRs were efficiently removed in DWTPs, and in particular during adsorption processes. 5Cl-BTR had a high removal efficiency (75.7%) in the adsorption processes, followed by 5M-BTR (70.0%), 5,6-di-MeBTR (58.4%), and 1H-BTR (50.1%). By contrast, BTHs were not efficiently removed in DWTPs, although relatively high removal efficiencies were achieved with an ozonation process (43.1%) compared to other treatment processes. In treated drinking and bottled water, the hazard quotients (HQs) of the representative BTRs and BTHs were acceptable (defined as HQ < 1), with a safety margin of 2-5 orders of magnitude.

Aquatic environmental fates and risks of benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, and p-phenylenediamines in a catchment providing water to a megacity of China

Wearing of vehicle parts could release many chemical additives into the environment, such as benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), and p-phenylenediamines (PPDs), which are potentially toxic to wildlife and humans. This study investigated the occurrence, source, and risks of BTRs, BTHs, and PPDs in a source catchment providing water to Guangzhou, a megacity in South China, covering groundwater, surface water, and stormwater. The results showed that BTRs and BTHs were predominant in surface water and groundwater. Unexpectedly, the BTR and BTH concentrations were lower in surface water than groundwater in a third of the paired samples. For the first time, 6PPD-quinone, a toxic ozonation product of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6PPD), was extensively detected in source waters. Stormwater decreased the BTR concentrations but increased the 6PPD-quinone concentrations in surface water owing to their affiliation to suspended particles. From natural to urban segments of Liuxi river, a downstream increasing trend in BTR and BTH concentrations was observed, confirming that they are indicative of urban anthropogenic activities. Strong correlations between industrial activities and BTR or BTH concentrations in surface water indicated that industrial activities were their main sources. Six compounds were prioritized as potentially persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) chemicals, combing our monitoring results and REACH criterion. This study improves our understanding of the environmental fates and risks of water-soluble tire-wear chemicals, which provides important information for chemical management, and indicates attention should be paid to the risk posed by 6PPD-quinone in the source water.

Multiclass target analysis of contaminants of emerging concern including transformation products, soil bioavailability assessment and retrospective screening as tools to evaluate risks associated with reclaimed water reuse

The occurrence of 200 multiclass contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) encompassing 168 medicinal products and transformation products (TPs), 5 artificial sweeteners, 12 industrial chemicals, and 15 other compounds was investigated in influent and effluent wastewater samples collected during 7 consecutive days from 5 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in Cyprus. The methodology included a generic solid-phase extraction protocol using mixed-bed cartridges followed by Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Quadrupole-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) analysis. A total of 63 CECs were detected at least in one sample, with 52 and 55 out of the 200 compounds detected in influents and effluents, respectively. Ten (10) out of the 24 families of parent compounds and associated TPs were found in the wastewater samples (influent or effluent). 1-H-benzotriazole, carbamazepine, citalopram, lamotrigine, sucralose, tramadol, and venlafaxine (>80 % frequency of appearance in effluents) were assessed with respect to their bioavailability in soil as part of different scenarios of irrigation with reclaimed water following a qualitative approach. A high score of 12 (high probability) was predicted for 2 scenarios, a low score of 3 (rare occasions) for 2 scenarios, while the rest 28 scenarios had scores 5-8 (unlikely or limited possibility) and 9-11 (possibly). Retrospective screening was performed with the use of a target database of 2466 compounds and led to the detection of 158 additional compounds (medicinal products (65), medicinal products TPs (15), illicit drugs (7), illicit drugs TPs (3), industrial chemicals (11), plant protection products (25), plant protection products TPs (10), and various other compounds (22). This work aspires to showcase how the presence of CECs in wastewater could be investigated and assessed at WWTP level, including an expert-based methodology for assessing the soil bioavailability of CECs, with the aim to develop sustainable practices and enhance reclaimed water reuse.

A case study: temporal trends of environmental stressors and reproductive health of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) from a site in the Potomac River Watershed, Maryland, USA

Decades of poor reproductive success and young-of-the-year survival, combined with adult mortality events, have led to a decline in the smallmouth bass (SMB; Micropterus dolomieu) population in sections of the Potomac River. Previous studies have identified numerous biologic and environmental stressors associated with negative effects on SMB health. To better understand the impact of these stressors, this study was conducted at the confluence of Antietam Creek and the Potomac River from 2013 to 2019 to identify temporal changes associated with SMB reproductive health. Surface water samples were collected and analyzed for over 300 organic contaminants, including pesticides, phytoestrogens, pharmaceuticals, hormones and total estrogenicity (E2Eq). Adult SMB were collected and sampled for multiple endpoints, including gene transcripts associated with reproduction (molecular), histopathology (cellular), and organosomatic indices (tissue). In males, biomarkers of estrogenic endocrine disruption, including testicular oocytes (TO) and plasma vitellogenin (Vtg) were assessed. Numerous agriculture-related contaminants or land use patterns were associated with gene transcript abundance in both male and female SMB. Positive associations between pesticides in the immediate catchment with TO severity and E2Eq with plasma Vtg in males were identified. In males, the prevalence of TO and detectable levels of plasma Vtg, liver vitellogenin transcripts (vtg) and testis vtg were high throughout the study. Peaks of complex mixtures of numerous contaminants occurred during the spring/early summer when spawning and early development occurs and to a lesser extent in fall/winter during recrudescence. Management practices to reduce exposure during these critical and sensitive periods may enhance reproductive health of these economically important sportfishes.

Toward a Green and Sustainable Silver Conservation: Development and Validation of Chitosan-Based Protective Coatings

When exposed to air, silver artifacts undergo an unpleasant darkening and shiny loss, commonly known as tarnishing. At the present, the development of protective coatings by using eco-friendly and biocompatible materials, able to ensure high transparency and to hinder the degradation of silver objects, remains a huge challenge. In this study, chitosan was used for the first time to realize sustainable coatings for silver protection. Both pure and benzotriazole-containing chitosan coatings were prepared and applied on sterling silver disks. A commercial product based on acrylic resin was used as a reference. The aesthetic features and protective properties of these coatings were evaluated by performing two different types of aging treatments. In particular, the assessment of the protective efficacy was carried out by reproducing both highly aggressive polluted environments and real-like museums' storage conditions. In the first case, chitosan-based coatings with benzotriazole performed better, whereas in storage conditions all the chitosan films showed comparable efficacy. Compositional, morphological and structural analyses were used to evaluate the protective properties of the coatings and to detect any physical or chemical modifications after the aging treatments. Our findings reveal that the two different testing methods provide complementary information. Moreover, chitosan coatings can achieve protective efficacy comparable with that of the commercial product but using non-toxic solvents and a renewable biopolymer. Chitosan coatings, designed for cultural heritage conservation, are thus promising for the protection of common sterling silver objects.

Study of Photocatalytic Oxidation of Micropollutants in Water and Intensification Case Study

During the last decades, heterogenous photocatalysis has shown as the most promising advanced oxidation process for the removal of micropollutants due to degradation rate, sustainability, non-toxicity, and low-cost. Synergistic interaction of light irradiation, photocatalysts, and highly reactive species are used to break down pollutants toward inert products. Even though titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most researched photocatalyst, to overcome shortcomings, various modifications have been made to intensify photocatalytic activity in visible spectra range among which is modification with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Therefore, photocatalytic oxidation and its intensification by photocatalyst’s modification was studied on the example of four micropollutants (diclofenac, DF; imidacloprid, IMI; 1-H benzotriazole, BT; methylene blue, MB) degradation. Compound parabolic collector (CPC) reactor was used as, nowadays, it has been considered the state-of-the-art system due to its usage of both direct and diffuse solar radiation and quantum efficiency. A commercially available TiO2 P25 and nanocomposite of TiO2 and MWCNT were immobilized on a glass fiber mesh by sol-gel method. Full-spectra solar lamps with appropriate UVB and UVA irradiation levels were used in all experiments. Photocatalytic degradation of DF, IMI, BT, and MB by immobilized TiO2 and TiO2/CNT photocatalysts was achieved. Mathematical modelling which included mass transfer and photon absorption was applied and intrinsic reaction rate constants were estimated: kDF=3.56 × 10−10s−1W−0.5m1.5, kIMI=8.90 × 10−11s−1W−0.5m1.5, kBT=1.20 × 10−9s−1W−0.5m1.5, kMB=1.62 × 10−10s−1W−0.5m1.5. Intensification of photocatalysis by TiO2/CNT was observed for DF, IMI, and MB, while that was not the case for BT. The developed model can be effectively applied for different irradiation conditions which makes it extremely versatile and adaptable when predicting the degradation extents throughout the year using sunlight as the energy source at any location.

Mechanisms, toxicity and optimal conditions - research on the removal of benzotriazoles from water using Wolffia arrhiza

In the presented work, phytoremediation with the use of floating plant Wolffia arrhiza (L.) Horkel ex Wimm. was proposed as a method of removing the selected benzotriazoles (BTRs): 1H-benzotriazole (1H-BTR), 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (4M-BTR), 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (5M-BTR) and 5-chlorobenzotriazole (5Cl-BTR) from water. The efficiency of phytoremediation depends on three factors: daily time of exposure to light, pH of the model solution, and the amount of plans. Using a design of experiment (DoE) methods the following optimal values were selected: plant amount 1.8 g, light exposure 13 h and pH 7 per 100 mL of the model solution. It was found that the loss of BTRs in optimal conditions ranged from 92 to 100 % except for 4M-BTR, for which only 23 % of removal was achieved after 14 days of cultivation of W. arrhiza. The half-life values for studied compounds ranged from 0.98 days for 5Cl-BTR to 36.19 for 4M-BTR. The observed rapid vanishing of 5M-BTR is supposed by the simultaneous transformation of 5M-BTR into 4M-BTR. The detailed study of BTRs degradation pointed that the plant uptake is mainly responsible for the benzotriazoles concentration decrease. Toxicity tests showed that the tested organic compounds induce oxidative stress in W. arrhiza, which manifested among others, in reduced levels of chlorophyll in cultures with benzotriazoles compared to control.

Occurrence and distribution of organic corrosion inhibitors (OCIs) in riverine sediments from the Pearl River Delta, South China

Although soluble organic corrosion inhibitors (OCIs) have been observed globally in surface water, data on their exposures in sediments are still scarce. In this study, a comprehensive investigation on spatial variations and potential sources of OCIs were conducted in riverine sediments from the Pearl River Delta (PRD), one of the most developed and urbanized areas in China. Of 12 OCIs, 7 were detected with the total concentrations ranging from 81.8 to 401.2 ng/g. When the results were compared with those of the water phase, OCIs in the riverine sediments exhibited relatively low concentrations, which was likely due to their low K_ow, and they were not expected to be adsorbed onto sediments. The spatial variation of OCIs suggested that the discharge of sewage treatment plants (STPs) effluent could be a major source of OCIs in the PRD region. The total concentrations of OCIs had a significant positive correlation with total organic carbon (TOC) contents, suggesting that they have similar sources. This study strongly indicated that the high consumption of OCIs have led to their wide exposure in different environments in the PRD region and additional ecotoxicological data are needed to evaluate their potential risks in riverine sediments in the future.

Divergent Forms of Pyroplastic: Lessons Learned from the M/V X-Press Pearl Ship Fire

In late May 2021, the M/V X-Press Pearl container ship caught fire while anchored 18 km off the coast of Colombo, Sri Lanka and spilled upward of 70 billion pieces of plastic or "nurdles" (∼1680 tons), littering the country's coastline. Exposure to combustion, heat, chemicals, and petroleum products led to an apparent continuum of changes from no obvious effects to pieces consistent with previous reports of melted and burned plastic (pyroplastic) found on beaches. At the middle of this continuum, nurdles were discolored but appeared to retain their prefire morphology, resembling nurdles that had been weathered in the environment. We performed a detailed investigation of the physical and surface properties of discolored nurdles collected on a beach 5 days after the ship caught fire and within 24 h of their arrival onshore. The color was the most striking trait of the plastic: white for nurdles with minimal alteration from the accident, orange for nurdles containing antioxidant degradation products formed by exposure to heat, and gray for partially combusted nurdles. Our color analyses indicate that this fraction of the plastic released from the ship was not a continuum but instead diverged into distinct groups. Fire left the gray nurdles scorched, with entrained particles and pools of melted plastic, and covered in soot, representing partial pyroplastics, a new subtype of pyroplastic. Cross sections showed that the heat- and fire-induced changes were superficial, leaving the surfaces more hydrophilic but the interior relatively untouched. These results provide timely and actionable information to responders to reevaluate cleanup end points, monitor the recurrence of these spilled nurdles, gauge short- and long-term effects of the spilled nurdles to the local ecosystem, and manage the recovery of the spill. These findings underscore partially combusted plastic (pyroplastic) as a type of plastic pollution that has yet to be fully explored despite the frequency at which plastic is burned globally.

Environmental risk assessment of low molecule benzotriazoles in urban road rainwaters in Poland

This study aimed to identify and quantify benzotriazoles (BTRs) emissions from road traffic and paved areas in an urban environment. Heterocyclic organic compounds BTRs are an emerging threat, under-recognized and under-analyzed in most environmental and water legislation. They are hazardous, potentially mutagenic, and carcinogenic micropollutants, not susceptible to effective biodegradation, and they move easily through the trophic chain, contaminating the environment and water resources. Traffic activities are a common source of BTR emissions in the urban environment, directly polluting human habitats through the different routes and numerous vehicles circulating in the cities. Using twelve heterogeneous locations scattered over a metropolitan area in Poland as a case study, this research analyzed the presence of BTRs in water samples from runoff produced from rainwater and snowmelt. 1H-BTR, 4Me-BTR, 5Me-BTR and 5Cl-BTR were detected in the tested runoff water. 5Cl-BTR was present in all samples and in the highest concentrations reaching 47,000 ng/L. Risk quotients calculated on the basis of the determined concentrations indicate that the highest environmental risk is associated with the presence of 5Cl-BTR and the sum of 4Me-BTR and 5Me-BTR, and the most sensitive organisms are bacteria and invertebrates. The results indicate that it is possible to associate the occurrence of these contaminants with the type of cover, traffic intensity, and vehicle type.

Associations of benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles with estrogens and androgens among pregnant women: A cohort study with repeated measurements

People are extensively exposed to benzotriazoles (BTRs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) derivatives, which are environmental pollutants that may possess endocrine-disrupting potential; however, no epidemiological evidence is available on the associations of BTRs and BTHs with estrogens and androgens. This study aimed at investigating the associations of BTRs and BTHs with estrogens and androgens among pregnant women. Based on a prospective cohort study, we included 459 pregnant women who donated a complete serial of urine samples at each trimester and had repeated measurements of four BTRs, four BTHs, three estrogens (estrone, 17β-estradiol, and estrio), and two androgens (dehydroepiandrosterone and testosterone) in the urine samples. Associations of repeatedly measured BTRs and BTHs with maternal urinary estrogens and androgens were analyzed, and the cross-sectional associations were also analyzed. Tolyltriazole (TTR) (≥59.3%) and benzothiazole (BTH) (≥93.5%) had the highest detection rate among the BTRs and BTHs, respectively. Repeated measurement analysis and cross-sectional analysis consistently found the target BTRs and BTHs were positively associated with 17β-estradiol, estriol, and testosterone, while the trend of the associations with estrone and dehydroepiandrosterone was inconsistent. Among the positive associations with 17β-estradiol, estriol, and testosterone, the percent of change in estriol associated with TTR was the most prominent [28.5% (95% confidential interval: 24.2%, 32.9%) for each doubling in TTR]. The significant associations with estrone, estriol, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone were stronger among pregnant women who gave birth to a boy than those who gave birth to a girl. These findings add epidemiological evidence on the endocrine-disrupting potential of BTRs and BTHs and highlight the importance of focusing on the health outcomes of BTRs and BTHs related to disturbed estrogens and androgens. Future studies are needed to validate these findings and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Neutral Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, Butyl Carbitol, and Organic Corrosion Inhibitors in Aqueous Film-Forming Foams: Implications for Vapor Intrusion and the Environment

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), butyl carbitol, and corrosion inhibitors are components of aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs). Volatile (neutral) fluorotelomerization (FT)- and electrochemical fluorination (ECF)-based PFAS, butyl carbitol, and organic corrosion inhibitors were quantified in 39 military specification (MilSpec), non-MilSpec, and alcohol resistant-AFFF concentrates (undiluted) from 1974 to 2010. Fluorotelomer alcohols were found only in FT-based AFFFs and N-methyl- and N-ethyl-perfluoroalkyl sulfonamides, and sulfonamido ethanols were found only in ECF-based AFFFs. Neutral PFAS and benzotriazole, 4-methylbenzotriazole, and 5-methybenzotriazole occurred at mg/L levels in the AFFFs, while butyl carbitol occurred at g/L levels. Neutral PFAS concentrations in indoor air due to vapor intrusion of a nearby undiluted AFFF release are estimated to be anywhere from 2 to >10 orders of magnitude higher than documented background indoor air concentrations. Estimated butyl carbitol and organic corrosion inhibitor concentrations were lower than and comparable to indoor concentrations recently measured, respectively. The wide range of neutral PFAS concentrations and Henry's law constants indicate that field, soil-gas measurements are needed to validate the estimations. Co-discharged butyl carbitol likely contributes to oxygen depletion in AFFF-impacted aquifers and may hinder the natural PFAS aerobic biotransformation. Organic corrosion inhibitors in AFFFs indicate that these are another source of corrosion inhibitors in the environment.

Development and validation of a simultaneous method for the analysis of benzothiazoles and organic ultraviolet filters in various environmental matrices by GC-MS/MS

The presence of benzothiazoles (BTHs) and organic ultraviolet filters (UV filters) in aquatic ecosystems has emerged as a significant environmental issue, requiring urgent and efficient determination methods. A new, rapid, and sensitive determination method using gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous extraction and analysis of 10 commonly used BTHs and 10 organic UV filters in surface water, wastewater, sediment, and sludge. For aqueous samples, solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was employed with optimizing of SPE cartridge type, pH, and elution solvent. For solid samples, ultrasonic extraction-solid-phase extraction purification (UE-SPE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) methods were compared. And extraction conditions for ultrasonic extraction method (extraction solvents and extraction times) and PLE method (extraction temperatures and extraction cycles) were optimized. The limits of quantification for the 20 target compounds in surface water and wastewater were 0.01-2.12 ng/L and 0.05-6.14 ng/L, while those for sediment and sludge with UE-SPE method were 0.04-5.88 ng/g and 0.22-6.61 ng/g, respectively. Among the 20 target compounds, the recoveries ranged from 70 to 130% were obtained for 16, 15, 15, and 15 analytes in the matrix-spiked samples of surface water, wastewater, sediment, and sludge with three levels, respectively. And the precision was also acceptable with relative standard deviation (RSD) below 20% for all analytes. The developed methods were applied for the determination and quantification of target compounds in surface water, sediment, wastewater, and sludge samples collected from two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the Pearl River in Guangzhou, China. BTHs were frequently detected in surface water and wastewater, while UV filters were mainly found in sediment and sludge. Benzotriazole (BT) and 2-hydroxybenzothiazole (2-OH-BTH) were the two major BTHs in influent wastewater and surface water, respectively, with concentrations up to 966 and 189 ng/L. As for sediment and sludge, 2-(2'-hydroxy-5'-octylphenyl)-benzotriazole (UV-329) was a predominant chemical, detected at concentrations of 111 and 151 ng/g, respectively.

Pollution characteristics, exposure assessment and potential cardiotoxicities of PM2.5-bound benzotriazole and its derivatives in typical Chinese cities

Benzotriazole and its derivatives (BTRs), classified as high-volume production chemicals, have been widely detected in various environmental media, including the atmosphere, water, soil and dust, as well as organisms. However, studies on the pollution characteristics and health impact of PM_2.5 related BTRs are so far limited. This study is the first to demonstrate the regional scale distribution of PM_2.5-bound BTRs and their potential cardiotoxicities. Optimized methods of extraction, purification and GC-EI-MS/MS were applied to characterize and analyze PM_2.5-bound BTRs from three cities in China during the winter of 2018. The concentration of ∑BTRs in Taiyuan (6.28 ng·m^-3) was more than three times that in Shanghai (1.53 ng·m^-3) and Guangzhou (1.99 ng·m^-3). Benzotriazole (BTR) and 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (5TTR) contributed more than 80% of ∑BTRs concentration as the major pollutants among three cities. The correlation analysis indicated that there was a positive correlation between temperature and concentration of BTR and a negative correlation between temperature and concentration of 5TTR. In addition, the risk of BTRs exposure to toddlers should be paid more attention in Taiyuan by the human exposure assessment. Furthermore, toxicity screening by experimental methods indicated that 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (4TTR) was the most harmful to cardiomyocytes. The western blot assay showed a ROS-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis signaling pathway was activated after exposure to 4TTR in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs). On the other hand, metabolomics revealed that exposure of 4TTR to NRCMs disturbed mitochondrial energy metabolism by disturbing pantothenate and coenzyme A synthesis pathway. Our study not only clarifies the contamination profiles of PM_2.5-bound BTRs in typical Chinese cities but also reveals their cardiotoxicities associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.

Benzotriazole Ultraviolet Stabilizers Promote Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation via Activating Estrogen-Related Receptors α and γ at Human-Relevant Levels

Benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVSs) are ubiquitous emerging pollutants that have been reported to show estrogenic disruption effects through interaction with the classic estrogen receptors (ERs) in the fashion of low activity. The present study aims at revealing the potential disruption mechanism via estrogen-related receptors α and γ (ERRα and ERRγ) pathways. By the competitive binding assay, we first found that BUVSs bond to ERRγ ligand binding domain (ERRγ-LBD) with Kd ranging from 0.66 to 19.27 μM. According to the results of reporter gene assays, the transcriptional activities of ERRα and ERRγ were promoted by most tested BUVSs with the lowest observed effective concentrations (LOEC) from 10 to 100 nM, which are in the range of human exposure levels. At 1 μM, most tested BUVSs showed higher agonistic activity toward ERRγ than ERRα. The most effective two BUVSs promoted the MCF-7 proliferation dependent on ERRα and ERRγ with a LOEC of 100 nM. The molecular dynamics simulation showed that most studied BUVSs had lower binding free energy with ERRγ than with ERRα. The structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that molecular polarizability, electron-donating ability, ionization potential, and softness were the main structural factors impacting the binding of BUVSs with ERRγ. Overall, our results provide novel insights into the estrogenic disruption effects of BUVSs.

Road Runoff Characterization: Ecotoxicological Assessment Combined with (Non-)Target Screenings of Micropollutants for the Identification of Relevant Toxicants in the Dissolved Phase

Road runoff (RR) is an important vector of micropollutants towards groundwater and soils, threatening the environment and ecosystems. Through combined chemical and biological approaches, the purpose of this study was to get insights on specific toxicants present in RR from two sites differing by their traffic intensity and their toxicological risk assessment. Non-target screening was performed by HRMS on RR dissolved phase. Ecotoxicological risk was evaluated in a zebrafish embryos model and on rat liver mitochondrial respiratory chain. Specific HRMS fingerprints were obtained for each site, reflecting their respective traffic intensities. Several micropollutants, including 1,3-diphenylguanidine (DPG) and benzotriazole (BZT) were identified in greater concentrations at the high-traffic site. The origin of DPG was confirmed by analyzing HRMS fingerprints from shredded tires. RR samples from each site, DPG and BZT were of relatively low toxicity (no mortality) to zebrafish embryos, but all generated distinct and marked stress responses in the light–dark transition test, while DPG/BZT mixes abolished this effect. The moderate-traffic RR and DPG inhibited mitochondrial complex I. Our study highlights (i) the unpredictability of pollutants cocktail effect and (ii) the importance of a multi-approaches strategy to characterize environmental matrices, essential for their management at the source and optimization of depollution devices.

Determination of benzotriazole and benzothiazole derivatives in tea beverages by deep eutectic solvent-based ultrasound-assisted liquid-phase microextraction and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry

Benzotriazole (BTRs) and benzothiazole (BTHs) derivatives are a group of high production volume chemicals with emerging health concern, which found in tea beverages raising potential risks for food safety and human health. The present work describes a simple method using a "green" deep eutectic solvent (DES) based-ultrasound-assisted liquid-phase microextraction (UALPME) to rapidly extract BTRs and BTHs from tea beverages, and then applying UHPLC-electrospray ionization (+)-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry for detection and quantification. To overcome the challenges related to different experimental conditions, a Factorial Multilevel Categoric Design and a Face Centered Central Composite Design were applied to screen and optimize the parameters for the DES-UALPME procedure, respectively. After optimization, the method was validated and shown to possess low limits of quantification (LOQs; 1.5-12 ng mL^-1), high precision (3-13%), and satisfactory accuracy (65-107%). The developed method was then successfully applied for the analysis of some selected BTRs and BTHs in tea beverages.

Assessing Occurrence and Biological Consequences of Contaminants of Emerging Concern on Oceanic Islands

Freshwater streams on oceanic islands serve critical ecological and economic functions. However, these are underrepresented in assessments of pollution from contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). Furthermore, freshwater streams and their endemic fauna often have characteristics that are distinct from those of continental streams and model species, calling extrapolations from studies of such systems into question for island streams. In the current study, we assessed the presence of CEC across three sampling events and five freshwater streams on the Island of Hawai’i. We also exposed juveniles of the native fish species Sicyopterus stimpsoni to a mixture of commonly co-occurring CEC for 96 h in static renewal experiments, testing for impacts of CEC in two ecologically relevant assays of functional performance. CEC from multiple sources were ubiquitous in Hawaiian streams, including human-use pharmaceuticals, agricultural herbicides, and industrial runoff. Concentrations of CEC were comparable to published studies from continental streams, exceeding total concentrations of 1000 ng/L for the eight quantified CEC in four samples, and approaching 2500 ng/L in one sample. Effects on exposed fish were subtle and limited to treatments with higher CEC concentrations but indicated potential impacts of CEC on locomotor performance. These results indicate that Hawaiian streams follow a global trend of widespread freshwater pollution by CEC that are accompanied by subtle effects on native fish species and highlight the need for the inclusion of endemic species and ecologically relevant assays when assessing the effects of contaminants in island habitats.

Benzotriazole concentrations in airport runoff are reduced following changes in airport deicer formulations

A comparison of the presence of additives in airport deicers commonly used in the United States and in airport runoff was conducted with data collected before and after changes in deicer formulations. Three isomers of benzotriazoles (BTs)-4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (4-MeBT), 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (5-MeBT), and 1H-benzotriazole (1H-BT)-are corrosion inhibitors added to some formulations of airport deicers and are reported to be a source of aquatic toxicity in streams receiving airport runoff. Concentrations of BT in aircraft deicers and anti-icing fluids (ADAF) were reduced over time but were not reduced in potassium acetate airfield-pavement deicer material (PDM) that was used throughout the study period. Streams receiving runoff from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, were monitored from 2004 to 2019 for BTs, with concentrations of 4-MeBT varying from <0.35 to 4600 µg/L, 5-MeBT varying from <0.25 to 6600 µg/L, and 1H-BT varying from <0.25 to 150 µg/L. Median 4-MeBT concentrations at sites downstream from the airport decreased by approximately 74%, 5-MeBT by 69%, and 1H-BT by 82% following reduction in BTs in ADAF formulations, resulting in a reduction in the potential for aquatic toxicity in receiving streams. A change in residuals from regression analysis between freezing point depressants and BTs indicate that the reduction in BT concentrations in airport runoff was a result of BT reduction in ADAF formulations, but PDM may still be a substantial source of BTs in airport runoff. Because BTs are a source of aquatic toxicity in airport deicers, the reductions in BTs in the common deicers observed in this study can be used to demonstrate the potential for a reduction in the effects to aquatic organisms in airport runoff, resulting in greater likelihood of meeting aquatic toxicity requirements in airport stormwater permits, and potentially driving airports, airlines, and permit holders to advocate further reduction or elimination of BTs and other harmful contaminants in airport deicers.
