Projecting impacts of climate change on metal mobilization at contaminated sites: Controls by the groundwater level

The role of soil structure on the cracking and cadmium leaching behavior of biochar-amended fine-grained soils

Biochar has shown promising potential for soil remediation, yet its impact on heavy metals (HMs) immobilization often overlooks soil structure, which could influence soil cracking behavior and HMs transport. To address this gap, this study investigates the role of soil structure (dry density and aggregate size) on the cracking and cadmium (Cd) leaching behavior of biochar-amended fine-grained soils. A series of semi-dynamic leaching tests were conducted on samples with and without wetting-drying (W-D) cycles. Based on the proposed improved method for quantifying the effective diffusion coefficient (De) of Cd in unsaturated soils and microstructural analyses, we found that: (1) Higher dry density and larger aggregate generally resulted in smaller De by decreasing soil pore volume. (2) Biochar could connect isolated pores within large aggregates through its internal pores, yielding greater increases in De (294.8%-469.0%) compared to small aggregates (29.1%-77.4%) with 3% biochar. However, further increases in biochar dosage led to decreased De, primarily due to the dense pore structure. (3) Biochar effectively inhibited soil cracking, achieving the highest reduction of 36.8% in surface crack ratio. (4) After W-D cycles, samples exhibited higher De with increasing dry density, with aggravated cracking being the primary cause, suggesting preferential flow within the cracks, particularly those penetrating the soil. This study highlights the importance of careful consideration of soil structure and cracking potential before in situ field application of biochar as a remediation agent for HMs-contaminated fine-grained soils.

Prioritizing ecological restoration in hydrologically sensitive areas to improve groundwater quality

Greening is the optimal way to mitigate climate change and water quality degradation caused by agricultural expansion and rapid urbanization. However, the ideal sites to plant trees or grass to achieve a win-win solution between the environment and the economy remain unknown. Here, we performed a nationwide survey on groundwater nutrients (nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, dissolved reactive phosphorus) and heavy metals (vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, arsenic, strontium, molybdenum, cadmium, and lead) in China, and combined it with the global/national soil property database and machine learning (random forest) methods to explore the linkages between land use within hydrologically sensitive areas (HSAs) and groundwater quality from the perspective of hydrological connectivity. We found that HSAs occupy approximately 20 % of the total land area and are hotspots for transferring nutrients and heavy metals from the land surface to the saturated zone. In particular, the proportion of natural lands within HSAs significantly contributes 8.0 % of the variability in groundwater nutrients and heavy metals in China (p < 0.01), which is equivalent to their contribution (8.8 %) at the regional scale (radius = 4 km, area = 50 km2). Increasing the proportion of natural lands within HSAs improves groundwater quality, as indicated by the significant reduction in the concentrations of nitrate nitrogen, manganese, arsenic, strontium, and molybdenum (p < 0.05). These new findings suggest that prioritizing ecological restoration in HSAs is conducive to achieving the harmony between the environment (improving groundwater quality) and economy (reducing investment in area management).

Brownfield-related studies in the context of climate change: A comprehensive review and future prospects

The global climate change events are expected to augment the vulnerability of persistent organic pollutants within the global brownfield areas to a certain extent, consequently heightening the risk crises faced by these brownfields amidst the backdrop of global environmental changes. However, studies addressing brownfield risks from the perspective of climate change have received limited attention. Nonetheless, the detrimental consequences of brownfield risks are intrinsically linked to strategies for mitigating and adapting to sustainable urban development, emphasizing the critical importance of their far-reaching implications. This relevance extends to concerns about environmental quality, safety, health risks, and the efficacy of chosen regeneration strategies, including potential secondary pollution risks. This comprehensive review systematically surveys pertinent articles published between 1998 and 2023. A selective analysis was conducted on 133 articles chosen for their thematic relevance. The findings reveal that: (1) Under the backdrop of the climate change process, brownfield restoration is necessitated to provide scientific and precise guidance. The integration of brownfield considerations with the dynamics of climate change has progressively evolved into a unified framework, gradually shaping a research paradigm characterized by "comprehensive + multi-scale + quantitative" methodologies; (2) Research themes coalesce into five prominent clusters: "Aggregation of Brownfield Problem Analysis", "Precision Enhancement of Brownfield Identification through Information Technology", "Diversification of Brownfield Reutilization Assessment", "Process-Oriented Approaches to Brownfield Restoration Strategies", and "Expansion of Ecological Service Functions in Brownfield Contexts"; (3) Application methodologies encompass five key facets: "Temporal and Spatial Distribution Patterns of Pollutants", "Mechanisms and Correlations of Pollution Effects", "Evaluation of Pollution Risks", "Assessment of Brownfield Restoration Strategies", and "Integration of Brownfield Regeneration with Spatial Planning". Future brownfield research from the climate change perspective is poised to reflect characteristics such as "High-Precision Prediction, Comprehensive Dimensionality, Full-Cycle Evaluation, Low-Risk Exposure, and Commitment to Sustainable Development".

Impacts of climate change and coastal salinization on the environmental risk of heavy metal contamination along the odisha coast, India

Climate change-mediated rise in sea level and storm surges, along with indiscriminate exploitation of groundwater along populous coastal regions have led to seawater intrusion. Studies on groundwater salinization and heavy metal contamination trends are limited. Present study investigated the heavy metal contamination, associated risks and provided initial information on the impacts of groundwater salinization on heavy metals along the coastal plains of Odisha, India. Total 50 groundwater samples (25 each in post- and pre-monsoon) were collected and analysed. Concentrations of Fe (44%), Mn (44%), As (4%) and Al (4%) in post-monsoon and Fe (32%), Mn (32%), As (4%), B (8%) and Ni (16%) in pre-monsoon exceeded Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) drinking water limits. High concentrations of heavy metals (Fe, Sr, Mn, B, Ba, Li, Ni and Co) and high EC (>3000 μS/cm) indicated that the groundwater-seawater mixing process has enhanced the leaching and ion exchange of metallic ions in central part of the study area. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested leaching process, seawater intrusion and agricultural practices as the main heavy metal sources in the groundwater. 4% of samples in post- and 16% in pre-monsoon represented high heavy metal pollution index (HPI). Pollution indices indicated the central and south-central regions are highly polluted due to saline water intrusion and high agricultural activities. Ecological risks in the groundwater systems found low (ERI <110) in both seasons. Children population found more susceptible to health risks than adults. Hazard index (HI > 1) has shown significant non-carcinogenic risks where Fe, Mn, As, B, Li and Co are the potential contributors. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR >1.0E-03) has suggested high carcinogenic risks, where As and Ni are the major contributors. The study concluded that groundwater salinization could increase the heavy metal content and associated risks. This would help policymakers to take appropriate measures for sustainable coastal groundwater management.

Evaluation of efficacy of non-coding RNA in abiotic stress management of field crops: Current status and future prospective

Abiotic stresses are responsible for the major losses in crop yield all over the world. Stresses generate harmful ROS which can impair cellular processes in plants. Therefore, plants have evolved antioxidant systems in defence against the stress-induced damages. The frequency of occurrence of abiotic stressors has increased several-fold due to the climate change experienced in recent times and projected for the future. This had particularly aggravated the risk of yield losses and threatened global food security. Non-coding RNAs are the part of eukaryotic genome that does not code for any proteins. However, they have been recently found to have a crucial role in the responses of plants to both abiotic and biotic stresses. There are different types of ncRNAs, for example, miRNAs and lncRNAs, which have the potential to regulate the expression of stress-related genes at the levels of transcription, post-transcription, and translation of proteins. The lncRNAs are also able to impart their epigenetic effects on the target genes through the alteration of the status of histone modification and organization of the chromatins. The current review attempts to deliver a comprehensive account of the role of ncRNAs in the regulation of plants' abiotic stress responses through ROS homeostasis. The potential applications ncRNAs in amelioration of abiotic stresses in field crops also have been evaluated.

Pollution of the Niger Delta with total petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals and nutrients in relation to seasonal dynamics

The African Niger Delta is among the world's most important wetlands in which the ecological effects of intensive oil exploitation and global change are not well documented. We characterized the seasonal dynamics and pollution with total-petroleum-hydrocarbons (TPHs), heavy-metals (HMs) and nutrient-loads in relation to climate-driven variables. High TPH concentrations up to 889 mg/L and HMs up to 13.119 mg/L were found in water samples, with pronounced spatio-temporal variation throughout the year. HM pollution index and contamination factor indicate serious ecological and human health hazards, especially for Cd, Cu, Hg, and Ni. Significant differences in TPHs/HMs were observed between sites and seasons, with correlations between TPHs-HMs, and climate-variables and TPHs-HMs. Nutrient levels, turbidity, salinity, temperature, and SO42- were high and interlinked with the variability of TPHs/HMs being greatest during wet season. These findings suggest an urgent need for improved pollution control in the Niger Delta taking into account the observed spatio-temporal variation and the exacerbation of effects in light of climate change. Given the high levels of contamination, further assessments of exposure effects and bioaccumulation in biota should include future climate change scenarios and effects on humans who intensively depend on the system for drinking water, food supply and livelihood.

Simulation and risk assessment of arsenic by Hydrus-3D and CalTOX in a typical brownfield site

Accurate quantification of arsenic migration and accumulation in brownfield site is critical for environmental management and soil remediation. However, the researches simulating arsenic in brownfield site in China are limited due to sparse data and complex migration behaviors. In this study, we simulated historic arsenic contamination using Hydrus-3D in an abandoned brownfield site in Hebei, China, from 1972 to 2019. Atmospheric discharge, wastewater leakage, solid waste discharge and tank leakage were calculated according to the factory processes for model simulation. Based on the results of Hydrus-3D, we assessed health risk of arsenic in this site. The results showed that total arsenic input to the soil surface from 4 pathways was 24.6 tons, the solid waste discharge was the highest contributor. The accumulation process mainly occurred in the unsaturated zone due to clay and silty clay absorbed arsenic and thus slow down the migration process. While in the saturation zone, abundant groundwater promoted migration of arsenic, resulting in widespread distribution of contaminated area. The model results represented good performance between simulated and measured values. Sensitivity analysis indicated that adsorption constant and water conductivity were the most influential parameters. Heath risk assessment showed that arsenic contamination continues to threaten resident health.

Fluid shear stress affects the metabolic and toxicological response of the rainbow trout gill cell line RTgill-W1

The Rainbow trout gill cell-line (RTgill-W1) has been accepted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD TG249) as a replacement for fish in acute toxicity tests. In these tests cells are exposed under static conditions. In contrast, in vivo, water moves over fish gills generating fluid shear stress (FSS) that alters cell physiology and response to toxicants. The current study uses a specialised 3D printed chamber designed to house inserts and allows for the flow (0.2 dynes cm²) of water over the cells. This system was used to assess RTgill-W1 cell responses to FSS in the absence and presence of copper (Cu) over 24 h. FSS caused increased gene expression of mechanosensitive channel peizo1 and the Cu-transporter atp7a, elevated reactive oxygen species generation and increased expression of superoxidase dismutase. Cell metabolism was unaffected by Cu (0.163 μM to 2.6 μM Cu) under static conditions but significantly reduced by FSS + Cu above 1.3 μM. Differential expression of metallothionein (mt) a and b was observed with increased expression of mta under static conditions and mtb under FSS on exposure to Cu. These findings highlight toxicologically relevant mechanosensory responses by RTgill-W1 to FSS that may influence toxicological responses.

Heavy Metal(loid) Accumulation in the Ovarian Tissue of Free-Ranging Queens and Bitches Inhabiting Highly Polluted Urban Environments

There is strong scientific evidence that exposure to environmental contaminants, such as heavy metal(loid)s (HMs), can impair female reproductive function. Pets, such as cats and dogs, who share the same habitat as humans, may be particularly useful sentinel models for detecting HMs in the ovary. In the present study, we compared the concentration of essential (Ems; Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, and Zn) and non-essential metal(loid)s (NEMs; Al, As, Cd, and Pb) in the ovarian tissues of free-ranging queens and bitches of different ages living in industrialized/highly polluted (south group) and non-polluted (north group) urban areas of the island of Sardinia, Italy. The results showed that both EMs and NEMs were present at detectable concentrations in feline and canine ovaries and their levels varied according to geographical areas and animal age. Among the EMs, Cu was found elevated in older queens and bitches inhabiting the southern area. Cadmium and lead were higher in feline and canine ovaries of older animals from the south compared to those living in the north. In addition, Cd and Pb concentrations increased in individuals of both species living in the south. These findings showed new perspectives for the use of pets as early warning sentinels of environmental pollution by HMs and for the risk of human exposure within a "One Health" approach. Pets may help to study the link between exposure to metals and female reproductive disturbances in mammals.

Climate Change Implications for Metal and Metalloid Dynamics in Aquatic Ecosystems and its Context within the Decade of Ocean Sciences

Anthropogenic activities are affecting marine ecosystems, notably coastal ones, in multiple ways and at increasing rates, leading to habitat degradation, loss of biodiversity, and greater exposure of flora and fauna to chemical contaminants, with serious effects on ocean health. Chemical pollution, in particular, is a significant negative stressor for aquatic ecosystems, both oceanic and coastal, and has recently been identified as a priority for conservation efforts. Metals and metalloids, in particular, present environmental persistence, bioavailability, tendency to bioaccumulate along the trophic chain, and potential toxic effects. However, the current scenario of climate change is increasingly affecting the aquatic environment, altering water mass flows and the transport of pollutants, aggravating toxic effects and ecological risks. Moreover, although traditional sources of contamination have been studied for decades, many knowledge gaps persist, in addition to the emerging effects of climate change that are still poorly studied. In this regard, this review aims to discuss climate change implications for metal and metalloid dynamics in aquatic ecosystems and its context within the Decade of Ocean Sciences. We also discuss how an increasing interest in plastic pollution has led to contamination by metals and metalloids being neglected, requiring mutual efforts to move forward in the understating of the negative and often lethal impacts of this type of pollutants, thus aiming at prioritizing contamination by metals and metalloids not just in the oceans, but in all water bodies.

Zinc transport and partitioning of a mine-impacted watershed: An evaluation of water and sediment quality

Watershed systems influenced by mining waste products can persist for many years after operations are ceased, leading to negative impacts on the health of the surrounding environment. While geochemical behaviors of these trace metals have been studied extensively at the benchtop-scale, much fewer studies have looked at controls on their distributions at the watershed-level. In this study, trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn) were reported from water and stream bed sediments at eight sites between the years 2014-2018 along a watershed undergoing active remediation efforts. Zn was determined to be the only trace metal analyzed with concentrations above EPA and Kansas Department of Health guidelines for both water and sediment in the watershed, and thus was the primary focus for determining the health of the watershed system. Controls on trace metal pollution distribution over the watershed were investigated to determine where remediation efforts should be focused. Surface cover seemed to have the highest effectivity with pasture lands having a strong positive correlation to Zn concentrations. Initial remediation efforts were assessed by calculating the geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and the contamination factor (C_f-sediment) from sediments and contamination factor from water (C_f-water) after decades of chat pile removal efforts. Most of the sites showed significant reduction in metal concentration values compared to previous studies in the watershed for water and sediment, with four sites still reporting concentrations that reveal potential health risks. Results from this study will inform management and policy makers for areas to focus their remediation efforts on the Spring River Watershed as well as providing a framework for assessing pollution at a watershed scale.

Manganese Pollution in Mining-Influenced Rivers and Lakes: Current State and Forecast under Climate Change in the Russian Arctic

Mining regions in different parts of the world have been associated with the significant pollution of water, sediments, and soils by manganese and other chemical elements. This study assessed the degree of geochemical transformation caused by open-pit extraction and processing of mineral resources in the Kovdorsky District of Murmansk Oblast, 20 km from the Russia–Finland border. A second objective was to predict further changes co-driven by industrial pressure and high climatic instability in the polar region. The field study involved sampling water and sediments from virgin background streams and from the tailings storage facility, settling ponds, rivers, and lakes affected by ore mining and disintegration. Laboratory analyses included the study of elemental composition, redox potential, alkalinity and acidity, organic matter content, and other geochemical characteristics for a better understanding of pollutant migration patterns. We revealed elevated levels of potentially toxic elements in surface waters and bottom sediments which pose a risk to the human health via the household and drinking water supply. Pollution with manganese (Mn) was found to be the major environmental issue. Its natural presence in the river water was overridden a hundredfold by anthropogenic enrichment. This is problematic as Mn is easily bioaccumulated, which can lead to unwanted ecotoxicological effects, and—in the case of prolonged exposure to high doses of Mn and its compounds—to detrimental human health impacts. We believe that the changing climate may raise the water flow and thus expand the area of the hydrochemical anomaly. On the other hand, the activation of self-purification and dilution processes could lead to decreasing environmental Mn concentrations.

"Non-traditional" stable isotopes applied to the study of trace metal contaminants in anthropized marine environments

The advent of Multicollector ICP-MS inaugurated the analysis of new metal isotope systems, the so-called "non-traditional" isotopes. They are now available tools to study geochemical and ecotoxicological aspects of marine metal contamination and hence, to push the frontiers of our knowledge. However, such applications are still in their infancy, and an accessible state-of-the-art describing main applications, obstacles, gaps, and directions for further development was missing from the literature. This paper fills this gap and aims to encourage the marine scientific community to explore the contributions of this newly available information for the fields of chemical risk assessment, biomonitoring, and trophic transfer of metal contaminants. In the current "Anthropocene" epoch, metal contamination will continue to threaten marine aquatic ecosystems, and "non-traditional" isotopes can be a valuable tool to detect human-induced changes across time-space involving metal contaminants, and their interaction with marine biota.

A critical review of the influence of groundwater level fluctuations and temperature on LNAPL contaminations in the context of climate change

The intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) predicts significant changes in precipitation patterns, an increase in temperature, and groundwater level variations by 2100. These changes are expected to alter light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) impacts since groundwater level fluctuations and temperature are known to influence both the mobility and release of LNAPL compounds to air and groundwater. Knowledge of these potential effects is currently dispersed in the literature, hindering a clear vision of the processes at play. This review aims to synthesize and discuss the possible effects of the increase in temperature and groundwater level fluctuations on the behavior of LNAPL and its components in a climate change context. In summary, a higher amplitude of groundwater table variations and higher temperatures will probably increase biodegradation processes, the LNAPL mobility, and spreading across the smear zone, favoring the release of LNAPL compounds to the atmosphere and groundwater but decreasing the LNAPL mass and its longevity. Outcomes will, nevertheless, vary greatly across arid, cold, or humid coastal environments, where different effects of climate change are expected. The effects of the climate change factors linked to soil heterogeneities, local conditions, and weathering processes will govern LNAPL behavior and need to be further clarified.

Catchment-scale microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) of acid mine drainage (AMD) revealed by sulfur isotopes

Laboratory experiments and point observations, for instance in wetlands, have shown evidence that microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) can lower sulfate and toxic metal concentrations in acid mine drainage (AMD). We here hypothesize that MSR can impact the fate of AMD in entire catchments. To test this, we developed a sulfur isotope fractionation and mass-balance method, and applied it at multiple locations in the catchment of an abandoned copper mine (Nautanen, northern Sweden). Results showed that MSR caused considerable, catchment-scale immobilization of sulfur corresponding to a retention of 27 ± 15% under unfrozen conditions in the summer season, with local values ranging between 13 ± 10% and 53 ± 18%. Present evidence of extensive MSR in Nautanen, together with previous evidence of local MSR occurring under many different conditions, suggest that field-scale MSR is most likely important also at other AMD sites, where retention of AMD may be enhanced through nature-based solutions. More generally, the developed isotope fractionation analysis scheme provides a relatively simple tool for quantification of spatio-temporal trends in MSR, answering to the emerging need of pollution control from cumulative anthropogenic pressures in the landscape, where strategies taking advantage of MSR can provide viable options.

Developing climate-resilient crops: improving plant tolerance to stress combination

Global warming and climate change are driving an alarming increase in the frequency and intensity of different abiotic stresses, such as droughts, heat waves, cold snaps, and flooding, negatively affecting crop yields and causing food shortages. Climate change is also altering the composition and behavior of different insect and pathogen populations adding to yield losses worldwide. Additional constraints to agriculture are caused by the increasing amounts of human-generated pollutants, as well as the negative impact of climate change on soil microbiomes. Although in the laboratory, we are trained to study the impact of individual stress conditions on plants, in the field many stresses, pollutants, and pests could simultaneously or sequentially affect plants, causing conditions of stress combination. Because climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of such stress combination events (e.g., heat waves combined with drought, flooding, or other abiotic stresses, pollutants, and/or pathogens), a concentrated effort is needed to study how stress combination is affecting crops. This need is particularly critical, as many studies have shown that the response of plants to stress combination is unique and cannot be predicted from simply studying each of the different stresses that are part of the stress combination. Strategies to enhance crop tolerance to a particular stress may therefore fail to enhance tolerance to this specific stress, when combined with other factors. Here we review recent studies of stress combinations in different plants and propose new approaches and avenues for the development of stress combination- and climate change-resilient crops.

Metal distribution, bioavailability and isotope variations in polluted soils from Lower Swansea Valley, UK

Soils in the Lower Swansea Valley, (United Kingdom) contain elevated level of metals, enough to cause direct or indirect effects on human health. This study assesses the severity of soil pollution and bioavailability of Cu and other metals (Ni, Zn, Co, Pb and Cr) in soils with various distances from a Ni refinery. We compare Cu concentrations in operationally defined soil fractions (bioavailable, bound to Fe/Mn oxide and incorporated in organic matter) with other metals (Ni, Zn, Pb, Co, Cr) usually occurring in ores used in metallurgic processes and report their pollution and geoaccumulation indices (PI and I_geo). Further, we use Cu stable isotope ratios (δ⁶⁵Cu) to trace the fate and mobility of Cu in soils. Our data suggest a point source of contamination for some of the heavy metals including Ni (I_geo = 1.9), Zn (I_geo = 0.28) and Cu (I_geo = 3.6) near the Ni refinery. However, Co (I_geo = 0.15) and Pb (I_geo = 3.3) contaminations are likely to be linked to different sources. No elevated Cr levels (I_geo= -0.07) occur in any of the studied soils. All soil metals are predominantly associated with organic matter (>50%) which  reduces their bioavailibility and thus their risk for ecological and human health. The Cu isotope data show that Cu in soil organic matter is enriched in ⁶⁵Cu, while the lighter isotopes (⁶³Cu) remain in the dissolved bioavailable Cu fraction (Δ⁶⁵Cu_{organic-bioavailable} is +0.12 ± 0.13‰). This suggests the preferential complexation of ⁶⁵Cu with soil organic matter after dissolution of Cu deposited to the soil. Thus, Cu isotope data can effectively indicate pathways of metal migration in polluted soils.

Global Warming, Climate Change, and Environmental Pollution: Recipe for a Multifactorial Stress Combination Disaster

Global warming, climate change, and environmental pollution present plants with unique combinations of different abiotic and biotic stresses. Although much is known about how plants acclimate to each of these individual stresses, little is known about how they respond to a combination of many of these stress factors occurring together, namely a multifactorial stress combination. Recent studies revealed that increasing the number of different co-occurring multifactorial stress factors causes a severe decline in plant growth and survival, as well as in the microbiome biodiversity that plants depend upon. This effect should serve as a dire warning to our society and prompt us to decisively act to reduce pollutants, fight global warming, and augment the tolerance of crops to multifactorial stress combinations.

Abiotic Stress and Reactive Oxygen Species: Generation, Signaling, and Defense Mechanisms

Climate change is an invisible, silent killer with calamitous effects on living organisms. As the sessile organism, plants experience a diverse array of abiotic stresses during ontogenesis. The relentless climatic changes amplify the intensity and duration of stresses, making plants dwindle to survive. Plants convert 1-2% of consumed oxygen into reactive oxygen species (ROS), in particular, singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radical (O2•-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (•OH), etc. as a byproduct of aerobic metabolism in different cell organelles such as chloroplast, mitochondria, etc. The regulatory network comprising enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems tends to keep the magnitude of ROS within plant cells to a non-damaging level. However, under stress conditions, the production rate of ROS increases exponentially, exceeding the potential of antioxidant scavengers instigating oxidative burst, which affects biomolecules and disturbs cellular redox homeostasis. ROS are similar to a double-edged sword; and, when present below the threshold level, mediate redox signaling pathways that actuate plant growth, development, and acclimatization against stresses. The production of ROS in plant cells displays both detrimental and beneficial effects. However, exact pathways of ROS mediated stress alleviation are yet to be fully elucidated. Therefore, the review deposits information about the status of known sites of production, signaling mechanisms/pathways, effects, and management of ROS within plant cells under stress. In addition, the role played by advancement in modern techniques such as molecular priming, systems biology, phenomics, and crop modeling in preventing oxidative stress, as well as diverting ROS into signaling pathways has been canvassed.

Hydro-climatic changes of wetlandscapes across the world

Assessments of ecosystem service and function losses of wetlandscapes (i.e., wetlands and their hydrological catchments) suffer from knowledge gaps regarding impacts of ongoing hydro-climatic change. This study investigates hydro-climatic changes during 1976-2015 in 25 wetlandscapes distributed across the world's tropical, arid, temperate and cold climate zones. Results show that the wetlandscapes were subject to precipitation (P) and temperature (T) changes consistent with mean changes over the world's land area. However, arid and cold wetlandscapes experienced higher T increases than their respective climate zone. Also, average P decreased in arid and cold wetlandscapes, contrarily to P of arid and cold climate zones, suggesting that these wetlandscapes are located in regions of elevated climate pressures. For most wetlandscapes with available runoff (R) data, the decreases were larger in R than in P, which was attributed to aggravation of climate change impacts by enhanced evapotranspiration losses, e.g. caused by land-use changes.

You Are What You Eat: The Relationship between Values and Organic Food Consumption

In current times, the man-made problems affecting our planet (climate change, loss of biodiversity, etc.) are making an urgent case for shifting towards a more sustainable kind of consumption. One of the ways these problems can be addressed is to promote organic agriculture, which means boosting levels of organic food consumption. This study examines the relationship between the number of organic foods consumed and the specific values that consumers look for in foods, in order to deepen the current knowledge regarding the behaviour of the organic food consumer. To this end, data was analysed from a face-to-face survey of 776 people in Spain through bivariate analysis techniques. Results show that organic food consumers have a different pattern of values from non-consumers and a greater level of involvement with food in general. Moreover, within the group of organic consumers, the effect of values on the quantity or variety of foods consumed is not as marked, although there are differences in favour of those that consume more frequently. Lastly, the main implication of the results obtained is that, in order to increase consumption, selfish values should be connected with altruistic ones. For this reason, instilling a specific value based on the term or concept “life” is proposed.
