Sorption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on soil and soil components: Influencing factors and mechanisms

Insight into the sorption and desorption pattern of pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides in acidic tea (Camellia sinensis) plantation soils

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) and their N-oxides (PANOs) are phytotoxins produced by various plant species and have been emerged as environmental pollutants. The sorption/desorption behaviors of PAs/PANOs in soil are crucial due to the horizontal transfer of these natural products from PA-producing plants to soil and subsequently absorbed by plant roots. This study firstly investigated the sorption/desorption behaviors of PAs/PANOs in tea plantation soils with distinct characteristics. Sorption amounts for seneciphylline (Sp) and seneciphylline-N-oxide (SpNO) in three acidic soils ranged from 2.9 to 5.9 µg/g and 1.7 to 2.8 µg/g, respectively. Desorption percentages for Sp and SpNO were from 22.2% to 30.5% and 36.1% to 43.9%. In the mixed PAs/PANOs systems, stronger sorption of PAs over PANOs was occurred in tested soils. Additionally, the Freundlich models more precisely described the sorption/desorption isotherms. Cation exchange capacity, sand content and total nitrogen were identified as major influencing factors by linear regression models. Overall, the soils exhibiting higher sorption capacities for compounds with greater hydrophobicity. PANOs were more likely to migrate within soils and be absorbed by tea plants. It contributes to the understanding of environmental fate of PAs/PANOs in tea plantations and provides basic data and clues for the development of PAs/PANOs reduction technology.

Spatiotemporal distribution and transport flux of organophosphate esters in the sediment of the Yangtze River

The Yangtze River Basin is an important area for organophosphate esters (OPEs) consumption and emission. Studies proved high OPE detection in Yangtze River water, but there is limited information about the spatiotemporal distribution and transport flux of OPEs in sediment. The present study investigated 16 OPEs in sediment from upstream to mid-downstream of the Yangtze River. The mean concentration of OPEs was 84.30 ng/g, and alkyl-OPEs was the primary component. Great specific surface area and high content of organic carbon significantly increased OPE concentration in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) by physical adsorption and chemical bonds (p < 0.05), making TGR the most contaminated area in mainstream. No significant differences in OPE constituents were found in seasonal distribution. Four potential sources of OPEs were identified by principal component analysis and self-organizing maps, and traffic emissions were the dominant source for OPEs. The hazard quotient model results indicated that aryl-OPEs showed moderate risks in the mainstream of Yangtze River, alkyl-OPEs and Cl-OPEs showed low risks. TGR was a significant sink of OPEs in Yangtze River and buried 7.41 tons of OPEs in 2020, a total of 14.87 tons of OPE were transported into the sea by sediment.

Migration and Accumulation Simulation Prediction of PPCPs in Urban Green Space Soil Irrigated with Recycled Water: A Review

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in reclaimed water introduces an ongoing challenge as they infiltrate green space soils during irrigation, leading to a gradual buildup that poses considerable ecological risks. The simulation and forecasting of PPCPs accumulation in soil are pivotal for proactive ecological risk management. However, the majority of research efforts have predominantly concentrated on the vertical transport mechanisms of PPCPs in the soil, neglecting a holistic perspective that integrates both vertical and lateral transport phenomena, alongside accumulation dynamics. To address this gap, this study introduces a comprehensive conceptual model that encapsulates the dual processes of vertical and lateral transport, coupled with accumulation of PPCPs in the soil environment. Grounded in the distinctive properties of green space soils, we delve into the determinants governing the vertical and lateral migration of PPCPs. Furthermore, we consolidate existing simulation methodologies for contaminant transport, aiming to establish a comprehensive model that accurately predicts PPCPs accumulation in green space soils. This insight is critical for deducing the emission threshold of reclaimed water necessary for the protection of green space soils, informing the formulation of rational irrigation strategies, and anticipating future environmental risks. It provides a critical theoretical basis for more informed decision-making in the realm of urban water reuse and pollution control.

COVID-19 pandemic-related drugs and microplastics from mask fibers jointly affect soil functions and processes

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented increase in pharmaceutical drug consumption and plastic waste disposal from personal protective equipment. Most drugs consumed during the COVID-19 pandemic were used to treat other human and animal diseases. Hence, their nearly ubiquitous presence in the soil and the sharp increase in the last 3 years led us to investigate their potential impact on the environment. Similarly, the compulsory use of face masks has led to an enormous amount of plastic waste. Our study aims to investigate the combined effects of COVID-19 drugs and microplastics from FFP2 face masks on important soil processes using soil microcosm experiments. We used three null models (additive, multiplicative, and dominative models) to indicate potential interactions among different pharmaceutical drugs and mask MP. We found that the multiple-factor treatments tend to affect soil respiration and FDA hydrolysis more strongly than the individual treatments. We also found that mask microplastics when combined with pharmaceuticals caused greater negative effects on soil. Additionally, null model predictions show that combinations of high concentrations of pharmaceuticals and mask MP have antagonistic interactions on soil enzyme activities, while the joint effects of low concentrations of pharmaceuticals (with or without MP) on soil enzyme activities are mostly explained by null model predictions. Our study underscores the need for more attention on the environmental side effects of pharmaceutical contamination and their potential interactions with other anthropogenic global change factors.

The environmental effects of microplastics and microplastic derived dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments: A review

Currently, microplastics (MPs) have ubiquitously distributed in different aquatic environments. Due to the unique physicochemical properties, MPs exhibit a variety of environmental effects with the coexisted contaminants. MPs can not only alter the migration of contaminants via vector effect, but also affect the transformation process and fate of contaminants via environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs). The aging processes may enhance the interaction between MPs and co-existed contaminants. Thus, it is of great significance to review the aging mechanism of MPs and the influence of coexisted substances, the formation mechanism of EPFRs, environmental effects of MPs and relevant mechanism. Moreover, microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) may also influence the elemental biogeochemical cycles and the relevant environmental processes. However, the environmental implications of MP-DOM are rarely outlined. Finally, the knowledge gaps on environmental effects of MPs were proposed.

Pharmaceutical and Trace Metal Interaction within the Water-Soil-Plant Continuum: Implications for Human and Soil Health

Unplanned water reuse for crop irrigation may pose a global health risk due to the entry of contaminants into the food chain, undesirable effects on crop quality, and impact on soil health. In this study, we evaluate the impact derived from the co-occurrence of pharmaceuticals (Phs), trace metals (TMs), and one metalloid within the water-soil-plant continuum through bioassay experiments with Lactuca sativa L. Results indicate that the co-occurrence of Phs and TMs has synergistic or antagonistic effects, depending on target contaminants and environmental compartments. Complex formations between drugs and TMs may be responsible for enhanced sorption onto the soil of several Phs and TMs. Concerning plant uptake, the co-occurrence of Phs and TMs exerts antagonistic and synergistic effects on carbamazepine and diazepam, respectively. With the exception of Cd, drugs exert an antagonistic effect on TMs, negatively affecting their uptake and translocation. Drug contents in lettuce edible parts do not pose any threat to human health, but Cd levels exceed the maximum limits set for leafy vegetable foodstuffs. Under Ph-TM conditions, lettuce biomass decreases, and a nutrient imbalance is observed. Soil enzyme activity is stimulated under Ph-TM conditions (β-galactosidase) and Ph and Ph-TM conditions (urease and arylsulfatase), or it is not affected (phosphatase).

For the occurrence of PPCPs from source to tap: A novel approach modified in terms of sample preservation and SPE cartridge to monitor PPCPs in our water supply

BACKGROUND

The ongoing infusion of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) into ecosystems sustains a perpetual life cycle and leads to multi-generational exposures. Limited understanding of their environmental impact and their intrinsic ability to induce physiological effect in humans, even at low doses, pose great risks to human health. Few scholarly works have conducted systematic research into the occurrence of PPCPs within potable water systems. Concurrently, the associated monitoring techniques have not been comprehensively examined with regards to the specific nature of drinking water, namely whether the significant presence of disinfectants may influence the detection of PPCPs.

RESULTS

A modified approach in terms of detailed investigation of sample preservation and optimization of an in-lab fabricated solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge filled with DVB-VP and PS-DVB sorbent was proposed. Favorable methodological parameters were achieved, with correlation coefficients spanning from 0.9866 to 0.9998. The LODs of the PPCPs fluctuated from 0.001 to 2 μg L-1, while the LOQs varied from 0.002 to 5 μg L-1. The analysis of spiked samples disclosed a methodological precision of 2.31-9.86 % and a recovery of 52.4-119 %. We utilized the established method for analyzing 14 water samples of three categories (source water, finished water and tap water) from five centralized water supply plants. A total of 24 categories encompassing 72 PPCPs were detected, with the concentrations of PPCPs manifested a marked decrease from source water to finished water and finally to tap water.

SIGNIFICANCE

Our research meticulously examined the enhancement and purification effects of widely used commercial SPE cartridges and suggested the use of in-lab fabricated SPE cartridges packed with DVB-VP and PS-DVB adsorbents. We also conducted a systematic evaluation of the need to incorporate ascorbic acid and sodium thiosulfate as preservatives for PPCP measurement, in consideration of the unique characteristics of drinking water matrices, specifically, the significant concentration levels of disinfectants. Furthermore, the proposed method was effectively employed to study the presence of PPCPs in source water, finished water, and tap water collected from centralized water supply plants.

Investigation the existence and mechanism of Cu(II)-sulfamethoxazole co-pollution by road-deposited sediments in stormwater runoff

In recent years, the escalating attention on Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and Heavy Metals in urban stormwater runoff highlights the critical role of Road-deposited sediments (RDS) as a significant carrier for pollutant occurrence and transport in runoff. However, existing research has overlooked the composite characteristics of PPCPs and Heavy Metals, hampering a holistic understanding of their transformation in diverse forms within runoff. This limitation impedes the exploration of their subsequent migration and conversion properties, thereby obstructing coordinated strategies for the control of co-pollution in runoff. This study focuses on the typical PPCP sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and heavy metal Cu(II) to analyze their occurrence characteristics in the Runoff-RDS system. Kinetics and isotherm studies reveal that RDS effectively accumulates SMX and Cu(II), with both exhibiting rapid association with RDS in the early stages of runoff. The accumulation of SMX and Cu(II) accounts for over 80 % and 70 % of the total accumulation within the first 240 min and 60 min, respectively. Moreover, as runoff pH values decrease, the initially synergistic effect between the co-pollutant transforms into an antagonistic effect. In the composite system, varying pH values from 2.0 to 6.0 lead to an increase in SMX accumulation from 4.01 mg/kg to 6.19 mg/kg and Cu(II) accumulation from 0.43 mg/g to 3.39 mg/g. Compared to the single system, the composite system capacity for SMX and Cu(II) increases by 0.04 mg/kg and 0.33 mg/g at pH 4.0. However, at pH 3.0, the composite system capacity for SMX and Cu(II) decreases by 0.21 mg/kg and 0.36 mg/g, respectively. Protonation/deprotonation of SMX under different pH conditions influences electrostatic repulsion/attraction between SMX and RDS. The mechanism of RDS accumulation of SMX involves Electron Donor-Acceptor (EDA) interaction, hydrogen bond interaction, and Lewis acid-base interaction. Cu(II) enrichment on RDS includes surface complexation reaction, electrostatic interaction, and surface precipitation. Complex formation enhances the accumulation of both SMX and Cu(II) on RDS in runoff. This study elucidates the co-occurrence characteristics and mechanisms of SMX and Cu(II) co-pollution in runoff systems. The findings contribute valuable insights to understanding the existence patterns and mechanisms of co-pollution, providing a reference for investigating the migration and fate of co-pollutant in runoff. Moreover, these insights could offer guidance for the development of effective strategies to mitigate co-pollution in rainwater.

Effects of root-derived organic acids on sorption of pharmaceutically active compounds in sandy topsoil

The presence and fate of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in agricultural fields are rarely investigated. The present study highlights that root-derived low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) affect the mobility of PhACs in cultivated humic Arenosol. Sorption experiments are conducted using three PhACs characterised by different physicochemical properties: carbamazepine (CBZ), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and diclofenac-sodium (DFC). The results suggest that the adsorption of EE2 is more intense than the other two PhACs, whereas DFC and CBZ are primarily dominated by desorption. LMWOAs mainly provide additional low-energy adsorption sites for the PhACs, and slight pH changes do not significantly affect the sorption mechanism. During competitive adsorption, the high-energy sites of the adsorbents are initially occupied by EE2 owing to its high adsorption energy (∼15 kJ/mol). The new low-energy binding sites enhance the adsorption of DFC (from 8.5 % to 72.0 %) and CBZ (from 31.0 % to 70.0 %) during multicomponent adsorption. LMWOAs not only affect adsorption by modifying the pH but also provide additional binding sites that allow the PhACs to remain in the root environment for a longer period. As the concentration of LMWOAs temporarily changes, so does the availability of PhACs in the root zone. Environmental changes in the humic horizon enhance the mobility of the adsorbed PhACs, which renders them continuously available for uptake by plants, thus increasing the possibility of PhACs entering the human food chain.

Optimization and validation of multiresidual extraction methods for pharmaceuticals in Soil, Lettuce, and Earthworms

The presence of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals (PhACs) in the environment poses potential risks. To comprehensively assess these risks, robust multiresidual analytical methods are essential for determining a broad spectrum of PhAC classes in various environmental compartments (soil, plants, and soil organisms). This study optimized extraction methods for analyzing over 40 PhACs from various matrices, including soil, lettuce, and earthworms. A four-step ultrasonic extraction method with varying extraction conditions and subsequent solid phase extraction was developed for soil samples. QuEChERS methods were optimized for extracting PhACs from lettuce and earthworm samples, addressing a literature gap in these less-studied matrices. The quantification of PhACs in soil, lettuce, and earthworm extracts was performed using a single LC-MS/MS method. Following thorough method validation, earthworms and lettuce were exposed to a mixture of 27 pharmaceuticals in a soil environment. The method validation results demonstrated the robustness of these methods for a broad spectrum of PhACs. Specifically, 29 out of 42 PhACs were extracted with an average efficiency > 50% and RSD < 30% from the soil; 40 out of 42 PhACs exhibited average efficiency > 50% and %RSD < 30% from the earthworms, while 39 out of 42 PhACs showed average efficiency > 50% and RSD < 30% from the lettuce. Exposure experiments confirmed the viability of these methods for quantifying a diverse range of PhACs in different environmental compartments. This study presents three thoroughly validated methods for determining more than 40 PhACs in diverse matrices, enabling a comprehensive assessment of PhAC dissemination in the environment.

Spatial distribution, mass flux, and ecological risk of antibiotics in Taiwan and Luzon Straits: A case in the West Pacific Region

Emerging pollutants are hazardous to the ecological environment and human health, and these issues have attracted increasing attention from scholars. In the current study, the Taiwan Strait is long and narrow, highly influenced by terrestrial domains, and frequently disturbed by human activities. Conversely, the Luzon Strait is an open sea far from the shore, and the impact of human activities on it is minimal. The description of antibiotics in two different types of seas revealed that contaminants were most commonly detected in both straits. In particular, the coasts of the Minjiang River, Jinjiang River, and Jiulong River were found to be pollution hotspots in the Taiwan Strait. The calculation of risk quotients revealed that antibiotics were more sensitive to algae. Furthermore, estimation of the risk quotients of the mixtures found that antibiotics in the environment do not pose a high risk to aquatic organisms at different trophic levels.

Transport of sulfanilamide in saturated porous media under different solution chemistry conditions: role of physicochemical characteristics of soils

Identification of the transport of sulfonamide antibiotics in soils facilitates a better understanding of the environmental fate and behaviors of these ubiquitous contaminants. In this study, the mobility properties of sulfanilamide (SNM, a typical sulfonamide antibiotic) through saturated soils with different physicochemical characteristics were investigated. The results showed that the physicochemical characteristics controlled SNM mobility. Generally, the mobility of SNM was positively correlated with CEC values and soil organic matter content, which was mainly related to the interactions between the organic matter in soils and SNM molecules via π-π stacking, H-bonding, ligand exchange, and hydrophobic interaction. Furthermore, higher clay mineral content and lower sand content were beneficial for restraining SNM transport in the soils. Unlike Na+, Cu2+ ions could act as bridging agents between the soil grains and SNM molecules, contributing to the relatively weak transport of SNM. Furthermore, the trend of SNM mobility in different soil columns was unaffected by solution pH (5.0-9.0). Meanwhile, for a given soil, the SNM mobility was promoted as the solution pH values increased, which was caused by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between SNM- species and soil particles as well as the declined hydrophobic interaction between SNM and soil organic matter. The obtained results provide helpful information for the contribution of soil physicochemical characteristics to the transport behaviors of sulfonamide antibiotics in soil-water systems.

Prediction of the mobility and persistence of eight antibiotics based on soil characteristics

Antibiotics are widely used in intensive animal husbandry in the Netherlands and are subsequently emitted to soil via manure. To predict degradation and mobility in soil, generic sorption models have been derived. However, most of the coefficients used in generic models are based on a limited range of soils and have not been validated for agricultural soils in the Netherlands. To improve model predictions and assess to what extent differences among soils affect sorption and degradation, an experimental study has been performed. Using a recently developed experimental approach, both the degradation (DT50) and mobility (Kd) of eight selected commonly used antibiotics were determined in 29 typical Dutch agricultural soils. Median DT50 values range from 5.3 days for Sulfadiazine to 120 days for Trimethoprim but are affected by soil type. The ratio of the lowest and highest DT50 for a given antibiotic among soils can be as large as 151, for Tylosin. Measured values of the logKd also range from 0.19 for Sulfadiazine to more than 2 for Doxycycline, Flumequine, Trimethoprim, Tylosin and Enrofloxacine. The impact of soil on Kd is large, especially for more mobile antibiotics such as Sulfadoxine and Sulfadiazine. Both the range in DT50 and Kd can be predicted reasonably well using a Freundlich type regression model that accounts for the variation in soil type and sampling depth. Organic matter, iron oxides, pH and clay content appear to be the main constituents and explain between 29 % (Trimethoprim) and 77 % of the variation in DT50 and between 64 % (Lincomycin) and 87 % (Sulfadoxine and Sulfadiazine) of the variation of Kd. The effect of depth on DT50 and Kd is however limited. The information thus obtained in combination with local data on soil type can be used to more accurately predict the potential risk of relevant antibiotics in soil and transport to ground- and nearby surface waters.

Mobility of antipyretic drugs with different molecular structures in saturated soil porous media

In the post-COVID-19 era, extensive quantities of antipyretic drugs are being haphazardly released from households into the environment, which may pose potential risks to ecological systems and human health. Identification of the mobility behaviors of these compounds in the subsurface environment is crucial to understand the environmental fate of these common contaminants. The mobility properties of three broad-spectrum antipyretic drugs, including ibuprofen (IBF), indometacin (IMC), and acetaminophen (APAP), in porous soil media, were investigated in this study. The results showed that the mobility of the three drugs (the background electrolyte was Na+) through the soil column followed the order of APAP > IBF > IMC. The difference in the physicochemical characteristics of various antipyretic drugs (e.g., the molecular structure and hydrophobicity) could explain this trend. Unlike Na+, Ca2+ ions tended to serve as bridging agents by linking the soil grains and antipyretic molecules, leading to the relatively weak mobility behaviors of antipyretic drugs. Furthermore, for a given antipyretic drug, the antipyretic mobility was promoted when the background solution pH values were raised from 5.0 to 9.0. The phenomenon stemmed from the improved electrostatic repulsion between the dissociated species of antipyretic molecules and soil grains, as well as the weakened hydrophobic interactions between antipyretic drugs and soil organic matter. Furthermore, a two-site non-equilibrium transport model was used to estimate the mobility of antipyretic drugs. The results obtained from this work provide vital information illustrating the transport and retention of various antipyretic drugs in aquifers.

Prediction of metformin adsorption on subsurface sediments based on quantitative experiment and artificial neural network modeling

Metformin (MET), a widely employed hypoglycemic pharmaceutical agent, has been frequently detected within groundwater, which has posed a threat to ecosystems and human health. However, the adsorption behavior of MET onto distinct constituent aquitards and aquifers sediments remains shrouded in uncertainty. To reveal the adsorption capacities and mechanisms of diverse sedimentary matrices, we delved into a series of adsorption experiments involving MET on 37 subsurface sediment samples obtained from four boreholes (ranging from 0 to 30 m in depth) in the Jianghan Plain. The quantitative analysis revealed that a majority of the sedimentary compositions consisted of clay minerals (mainly chlorite, montmorillonite and albite), with MET exhibiting considerable variability in across different sediment components (ranging from 15.5 to 489.4 mg/kg). In general, MET adsorption declined in proportion to an increase in quartz composition and depth. Consequently, an artificial neural network model was constructed (R2 = 0.971) to assess the influence of sediment composition on MET adsorption, and thereby elucidating the dominant roles played by chlorite and montmorillonite in this process. Notably, electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, and chemical bonding emerged as the primary mechanisms governing MET adsorption on sediments, particularly those rich in clay minerals. By shedding light on the adsorption mechanism of MET on clay-dominated subsurface sediments, our findings have contributed to a quantitative understanding of MET's adsorption capacity and have highlighted the associated environmental risks.

Occurrence, fate, and potential risk of pharmaceutical pollutants in agriculture: Challenges and environmentally friendly solutions

In recent years, pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) have attained global prevalence. The behavior of PhACs in agricultural soils is complex and depends on several factors, such as the nature of the compounds and their physicochemical characteristics, which affect their fate and potential threats to human health, ecosystems, and the environment. The detection of residual pharmaceutical content is possible in both agricultural soils and environmental matrices. PhACs are commonly found in agricultural soil, with concentrations varying significantly, ranging from as low as 0.048 ng g-1 to as high as 1420.76 mg kg-1. The distribution and persistence of PhACs in agriculture can lead to the leaching of these toxic pollutants into surface water, groundwater, and vegetables/plants, resulting in human health risks and environmental pollution. Biological degradation or bioremediation plays a critical role in environmental protection and efficiently eliminates contamination by hydrolytic and/or photochemical reactions. Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have been investigated as the most recent approach for the treatment of emerging persistent micropollutants, including PhACs, from wastewater sources. MBR- based technologies have proven to be effective in eliminating pharmaceutical compounds, achieving removal rates of up to 100%. This remarkable outcome is primarily facilitated by the processes of biodegradation and metabolization. In addition, phytoremediation (i.e., constructed wetlands), microalgae-based technologies, and composting can be highly efficient in remediating PhACs in the environment. The exploration of key mechanisms involved in pharmaceutical degradation has revealed a range of approaches, such as phytoextraction, phytostabilization, phytoaccumulation, enhanced rhizosphere biodegradation, and phytovolatilization. The well-known advanced/tertiary removal of sustainable sorption by biochar, activated carbon, chitosan, etc. has high potential and yields excellent quality effluents. Adsorbents developed from agricultural by-products have been recognized to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds and are cost-effective and eco-friendly. However, to reduce the potentially harmful impacts of PhACs, it is necessary to focus on advanced technologies combined with tertiary processes that have low cost, high efficiency, and are energy-saving to remove these emerging pollutants for sustainable development.

Application of UHPLC-MS/MS method to monitor the occurrence of sulfonamides and their transformation products in soil in Silesia, Poland

Sulfonamides circulating in the environment lead to disturbances in food chains and local ecosystems, but most importantly contribute to development of resistance genes, which generate problems with multidrug-resistant bacterial infections treatment. In urban areas, sources of sulfonamide distribution in soils have received comparatively less attention in contrast to rural regions, where animal-derived manure, used as a natural fertilizer, is considered the main source. The aim of this study was to determine eight sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethizole, sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, sulfathiazole, and sulfisoxazole) in environmental soil samples collected from urbanized regions in Silesian Voivodeship with increased animal activity. These soils were grouped according to the organic carbon content. It was necessary to develop versatile and efficient extraction and determination method to analyze selected sulfonamides in various soil types. The developed LC-MS/MS method for sulfonamides analyzing was validated. The obtained recoveries exceeded 45% for soil with medium organic carbon content and 88% for sample with a very low organic carbon content (arenaceous quartz). The obtained results show the high impact of organic matter on analytes adsorption in soil, which influences recovery. All eight sulfa drugs were determined in environmental samples in the concentration range 1.5-10.5 ng g-1. The transformation products of the analytes were also identified, and 29 transformation products were detected in 24 out of 27 extracts from soil samples.

Influence of biosolids and sewage effluent application on sitagliptin soil sorption

Biosolids and sewage effluent application to agricultural fields is becoming a win-win practice as both an economical waste management strategy and a source of nutrients and organic matter for plant growth. However, these organic wastes contain a variety of trace chemicals of environmental concern such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), which may pose a risk to agricultural fields and ecosystems. This work aims to investigate the sorption of sitagliptin on four agricultural soils, evaluate the effects of biosolids and sewage effluent application, and elucidate the main sorption mechanism of the pharmaceutical on soils. The sorption study revealed that the sorption capacities of sitagliptin on different soils were positively related to the contents of soil organic matter and negatively associated with soil pH values. The application of biosolids and sewage effluent decreased the sorption capacity of sitagliptin, which may be attributed to the loading of dissolved organic matter derived from organic wastes. The Freundlich isotherm model demonstrated that the addition of biosolids from 0 to 100 % (W/W) consistently decreased the sorption affinity (Kf) of sitagliptin from 1.69 × 102 to 3.82 × 101 mg(1-n) Ln kg-1. Sewage application at 0, 10, 50, and 100 % (V/V) also reduced the Kf values from 1.69 × 102 to 9.17 × 101 mg(1-n) Ln kg-1. Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR)-Infrared (IR) spectroscopy analyses suggested that electrostatic interactions between carbonyl and amino groups of sitagliptin and the negatively charged soil surface are the main sorption mechanisms. In a co-solute system, the sorption affinity of sitagliptin on the soil decreased with increasing metformin concentrations, suggesting that competitive sorption may reduce the sorption capacity of individual contaminants in soil systems containing multiple PPCPs.

Simultaneous detection of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in three types of bio-based fertilizers by an improved QuEChERS method coupled with UHPLC-q-ToF-MS/MS

Bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) have the potential to contain both pesticides and pharmaceutical residues, which may pose a threat to soils, crops, and human health. However, no analytical screening method is available currently to simultaneously analyze a wide range of contaminants in the complex origin-dependent matrices of BBFs. To fill this gap, our study tested and improved an original QuEChERS method (OQM) for simultaneously analyzing 78 pesticides and 18 pharmaceuticals in BBFs of animal, plant, and ashed sewage sludge origin. In spiked recovery experiments, 34-58 pharmaceuticals and pesticides were well recovered (recovery of 70-120%) via OQM at spiking concentrations levels of 10 ng/g and 50 ng/g in these three different types of BBFs. To improve the extraction efficiency further, ultrasonication and end-over-end rotation were added based on OQM, resulting in the improved QuEChERS method (IQM) that could recover 57-79 pesticides and pharmaceuticals, in the range of 70-120%. The detection limits of this method were of 0.16-4.32/0.48-12.97 ng/g, 0.03-11.02/0.10-33.06 ng/g, and 0.06-5.18/0.18-15.54 ng/g for animal, plant, and ash-based BBF, respectively. Finally, the IQM was employed to screen 15 BBF samples of various origins. 15 BBFs contained at least one pesticide or pharmaceutical with ibuprofen being frequently detected in at concentration levels of 4.1-181 ng/g. No compounds were detected in ash-based BBFs.

The Soil Section of Heliyon aims to be a platform for basic and applied soil science research, emphasizing the central role of soils and their interactions with human activities. This editorial highlights recent research trends in soil science, including the evolving definition of soil, the multifunctionality of soils and their biodiversity, soil degradation and erosion, the role of soil microflora, advancements in soil mapping techniques, global change and the carbon cycle, soil health, the relationship between soil and buildings, and the importance of considering soil quality in land use planning and policies. The Heliyon Soil Science section seeks to publish scientifically accurate and valuable research that explores the diverse functions of soil and their significance in sustainable land-use systems.

Influence of Manure as a Complex Mixture on Soil Sorption of Pharmaceuticals-Studies with Selected Chemical Components of Manure

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) enter soil with organic waste materials such as manure. Such complex substrates differently affect PhACs' soil sorption. For the first time, batch experiments were conducted using five selected chemicals as model constituents to elucidate the effects. Urea, phosphate (KH₂PO₄), acetic acid, phenol and nonadecanoic acid (C:19) altered the sorption strength and/or nonlinearity of sulfadiazine, caffeine, and atenolol in an arable Cambisol topsoil. The nonlinear Freundlich model best described sorption. Overall, the PhACs' Freundlich coefficients (sorption strength) increased in the sequence urea < phosphate < phenol < C:19 < acetic acid, while the Freundlich exponents largely decreased, indicating increasing sorption specificity. The effects on sulfadiazine and caffeine were rather similar, but in many cases different from atenolol. Phosphate mobilized sulfadiazine and caffeine and urea mobilized sulfadiazine, which was explained by sorption competition resulting from specific preference of similar sorption sites. Soil sorbed phenol strongly increased the sorption of all three PhACs; phenolic functional groups are preferred sorption sites of PhACs in soil. The large increase in sorption of all PhACs by acetic acid was attributed to a loosening of the soil organic matter and thus the creation of additional sorption sites. The effect of C:19 fatty acid, however, was inconsistent. These results help to better understand the sorption of PhACs in soil-manure mixtures.

Chemodiversity of soil organic matters determines biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls by a graphene oxide-assisted bacterial agent

A promising strategy for degrading persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in soil is amendment with nanomaterial-assisted functional bacteria. However, the influence of soil organic matter chemodiversity on the performance of nanomaterial-assisted bacterial agents remains unclear. Herein, different types of soil (Mollisol soil, MS; Ultisol soil, US; and Inceptisol soil, IS) were inoculated with a graphene oxide (GO)-assisted bacterial agent (Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110, B. diazoefficiens USDA 110) to investigate the association between soil organic matter chemodiversity and stimulation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) degradation. Results indicated that the high-aromatic solid organic matter (SOM) inhibited PCB bioavailability, and lignin-dominant dissolved organic matter (DOM) with high biotransformation potential was a favored substrate for all PCB degraders, which led to no stimulation of PCB degradation in MS. Differently, high-aliphatic SOM in US and IS promoted PCB bioavailability. The high/low biotransformation potential of multiple DOM components (e.g., lignin, condensed hydrocarbon, unsaturated hydrocarbon, etc.) in US/IS further resulted to the enhanced PCB degradation by B. diazoefficiens USDA 110 (up to 30.34%) /all PCB degraders (up to 17.65%), respectively. Overall, the category and biotransformation potential of DOM components and the aromaticity of SOM collaboratively determine the stimulation of GO-assisted bacterial agent on PCB degradation.

Adsorption behaviors and influencing factors of antibiotic norfloxacin on natural kaolinite-humic composite colloids in aquatic environment

Particles are ubiquitous and abundant in natural waters and play a crucial role in the fate and bioavailability of organic pollution. In the present study, natural mineral (kaolinites, KL), organic (humic/fulvic acid, HA/FA) and their composite particles were further separated into particles fractions (PFs, >1 μm) and colloidal fractions (CFs, 1 kDa-1 μm) by cross-flow ultrafiltration (CFUF). This research demonstrated the role of kaolinite-humic composite colloids on the adsorption of fluoroquinolone norfloxacin (NOR). The Freundlich model satisfactory described adsorption curves, showing strong affinity of NOR to CFs, with sorption capacity (K_F) between 8975.50 and 16638.13 for NOR. The adsorption capacities of NOR decreased with the particle size increasing from CFs to PFs. In addition, composite CFs showed excellent adsorption capacity, which was mainly attributed to the larger specific surface area of composite CFs and electronegativity and numerous oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces of the complexes, and electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bond and cation exchange could dominate the NOR adsorption onto the composite CFs. The best pH value under adsorption condition of composite CFs varied from weakly acidic to neutral with the increase of load amount of humic and fulvic acids on the surface of inorganic particles. The adsorption decreased with higher cation strength, larger cation radius and higher cation valence, which depended on the surface charge of colloids and the molecular shape of NOR. These results provided insight into the interfacial behaviors of NOR on the surfaces of natural colloids and promoted the understanding of the migration and transport of antibiotics in environmental systems.

COVID-19 related antiviral drugs are less adsorbable on sediment under alkaline and high cation conditions

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented usage and elevated environmental concentrations of antiviral drugs. However, very limited studies have reported their sorption characteristics on environmental matrices. This study investigated the sorption of six COVID-19 related antivirals on Taihu Lake sediment with varied aqueous chemistry. Results showed that the sorption isotherms for arbidol (ABD), oseltamivir (OTV), and ritonavir (RTV) were linear, while the Freundlich model was the best-fit for ribavirin (RBV) and the Langmuir model for favipiravir (FPV) and remdesivir (RDV). Their distribution coefficient, K_d, varied between 5.051 L/kg to 248.6 L/kg with the sorption capacities ranked as FPV > RDV > ABD > RTV > OTV > RBV. Alkaline conditions (pH 9) and elevated cation strength (0.05 M to 0.1 M) decreased the sorption capacities of the sediment for these drugs. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the spontaneous sorption of RDV, ABD, and RTV was between physisorption and chemisorption while FPV, RBV, and OTV were mainly physisorption. Functional groups related to hydrogen bonds, π - π interaction, and surface complexation were implicated in the sorption processes. These findings enhance our understanding about the environmental fate of COVID-19 related antivirals and provide basic data for predicting their distribution and risk in the environment.

Adsorption kinetics studies of ciprofloxacin in soils derived from volcanic materials by electrochemical approaches and assessment of socio-economic impact on human health

The use of antibiotics in the livestock sector has resulted in the entry of these drugs into the soil matrix through the disposal of manure as an organic amendment. To define the fate of these drugs, it is necessary to evaluate kinetic aspects regarding transport in the soil-solution. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the adsorption kinetic parameters of Ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) in Ultisol and Andisol soil which allows obtaining main kinetic parameters (pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models) and to establish the solute transport mechanism by applying kinetic models such as the Elovich equation, Intraparticle diffusion (IPD) and, the Two-site non-equilibrium models (TSNE). The adsorption kinetics of this fluoroquinolone (FQ), on both soils derived from volcanic ashes, is developed using electrochemical techniques for their determination. The experimental amount of CIPRO adsorbed over time (Qt) data best fit with the pseudo-second order kinetic models; R² = 0.9855, Ɛ = 10.17% and R² = 0.9959, Ɛ = 10.77% for Ultisol and Andisol, respectively; and where CIPRO adsorption was considered time dependent for both soils but the lower adsorption capacity in Ultisol; with 17.6 ± 2.8 μmol g^-1; which could mean a greater risk in environmental. Subsequently, applying models to describe solute transport mechanisms showed differences in the CIPRO adsorption extent for the fast and slow phases. Adsorption isotherms were evaluated, where Ultisol occurs on heterogenous sites as multilayers and Andisol by monolayer with similar Q_max. Finally, the socio-economic impact of antibiotic usage is presented, giving the importance of antibiotics in the livestock sector and their effects on human health.

A mechanistic insight into the shrinkage and swelling of Ca-montmorillonite upon adsorption of chain-like ranitidine in an aqueous system

Adsorption behavior of ranitidine hydrochloride (RT) on a Ca-montmorillonite (SAz-1) was studied in aqueous system through batch experiments. The adsorption kinetics revealed that the equilibrium reached within 0.25 h and the data fitted well to the pseudo-second order kinetic equation (R² = 0.98). The maximum RT adsorption capacity of SAz-1 was 369.2 mg/g and the adsorption isotherm data followed the Langmuir model (R² = 0.99). The adsorption of RT and desorption of exchangeable cations from the clay mineral were linearly correlated, suggesting that cation exchange was the dominant mechanism of RT adsorption. The XRD examination of RT-adsorbed SAz-1 samples (unsaturated/saturated) after heating enabled the calculation of RT occupied area in the interlayer of the clay mineral. The results suggested that adsorbed-RT at low loading rate could lay on the internal surfaces in a free style to reduce the basal spacing (d₀₀₁ value) of SAz-1. When the RT loading rate was increased, a limited surface space enforced more RT molecules to lay in a tilted style and caused interlayer swelling of SAz-1 increasing the d₀₀₁ value. The trend of rising decomposition temperature of RT with increasing RT loading rates confirmed intercalation of RT molecules in SAz-1. Infrared spectral analysis revealed the participation of amide and furan groups of RT in binding between RT and SAz-1. Thus, this study indicated that SAz-1 is an efficient adsorbent to remove RT from contaminated water, and the chain-like molecular structure of RT could cause an irregular change in the basal spacing of swelling type clay minerals.

Recent developments in microplastic contaminated water treatment: Progress and prospects of carbon-based two-dimensional materials for membranes separation

Micro (nano)plastics pollution is a noxious menace not only for mankind but also for marine life, as removing microplastics (MPs) is challenging due to their physiochemical properties, composition, and response toward salinity and pH. This review provides a detailed assessment of the MPs pollution in different water types, environmental implications, and corresponding treatment strategies. With the advancement in nanotechnology, mitigation strategies for aqueous pollution are seen, especially due to the fabrication of nanosheets/membranes mostly utilized as a filtration process. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are increasingly used for membranes due to their diverse structure, affinity, cost-effectiveness, and, most importantly, removal efficiency. The popular 2D materials used for membrane-based organic and inorganic pollutants from water mainly include graphene and MXenes however their effectiveness for MPs removal is still in its infancy. Albeit, the available literature asserts a 70- 99% success rate in micro/nano plastics removal achieved through membranes fabricated via graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and MXene membranes. This review examined existing membrane separation strategies for MPs removal, focusing on the structural properties of 2D materials, composite, and how they adsorb pollutants and underlying physicochemical mechanisms. Since MPs and other contaminants commonly coexist in the natural environment, a brief examination of the response of 2D membranes to MPs removal was also conducted. In addition, the influencing factors regulate MPs removal performance of membranes by impacting their two main operating routes (filtration and adsorption). Finally, significant limitations, research gaps, and future prospects of 2D material-based membranes for effectively removing MPs are also proposed. The conclusion is that the success of 2D material is strongly linked to the types, size of MPs, and characteristics of aqueous media. Future perspectives talk about the problems that need to be solved to get 2D material-based membranes out of the lab and onto the market.

Assessment of relationship between aging and contaminant-carryover for different filter layer of surgical mask under urban environmental stressors

Abundant disposable surgical masks (SMs) remain in the environment and continue to age under urban environmental stressors. This study aimed to investigate the aging characteristics of SMs and the effect of different aged layers of SMs on phenanthrene (PHE), tylosin (TYL), and sulfamethazine (SMT) under two different urban environmental stressors (UV and ozone). The results show that UV exposure causes more severe aging of the SM layers than ozone. The middle layer, made of melt-brown fabric, has displayed the highest degree of aging due to its smaller diameter and mechanical strength. The two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis reveals the different aging sequences of functional groups and three layers in aged SMs under the two urban environmental stressors. Whether the SMs are aged or not, the adsorptions of three organic pollutants on SMs are positively correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient. Furthermore, except for the dominant hydrophobic interaction, aged SMs can promote the adsorption of three organic pollutants by accessory interactions (hydrogen bonding and partition), depending on their structures. These findings highlight the environmental effects of new microplastic (MP) sources and coexisting pollutants under the influence of COVID-19, which is helpful in accurately evaluating the biological toxicity of SMs.

Modelling and prediction of the effect of operational parameters on the fate of contaminants of emerging concern in WWTPs

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) provide a barrier against the discharge of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) into the environment. The removal of CECs is highly WWTP-specific and the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood, hampering the optimization of biological treatment steps for their removal. To fill this knowledge gap, we assessed the influence of four operational parameters of activated sludge biological treatment, namely total suspended solids, temperature, pH and redox conditions, on the sorption and biodegradation of four CECs under controlled laboratory conditions. Design of Experiments was used to better address the factors influencing CECs removal and interactions among operational parameters. The derived statistical models showed results in concordance with previous studies and indicated how sorption and biodegradation of the investigated CECs depend on most tested parameters and few of their interactions. The predictions of the developed models have been compared with literature values, indicating how the tested parameters are responsible for most of the variability of sorption, while they could not reliably generalize biodegradation rates. The developed models were also implemented as an extension of a mechanistic biological treatment model, successfully describing the dynamic behaviour of a large-scale WWTP, which was observed during a three-day continuous monitoring campaign. Compared to a traditional modelling approach, the one including the developed models showed on average almost a three-fold uncertainty reduction, favouring its use to aid WWTP managers and regulators for improved assessment of CEC fate and removal. Finally, the models highlighted that, while higher temperatures and solids concentrations generically favoured CECs removal, removal efficiency vary significantly due to operational parameters and no globally optimum conditions for CECs removal exist. The use of these models opens the door to the combined dynamic management of both traditional contaminants and CECs in WWTPs.

Effects of irrigation water quality on the presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products in topsoil and vegetables in greenhouses

The presence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment has harmful effects on humans and the ecosystem. Reclaimed water irrigation may introduce PPCPs into the agricultural system. Here, a greenhouse experiment investigated the impact of reclaimed water irrigation on PPCP levels in the edible parts of vegetables and topsoil in the North China Plain in 2015 and 2016. Three treatment protocols were applied to each vegetable: irrigation with reclaimed water, irrigation with groundwater, and mixed irrigation with groundwater and reclaimed water (1:1, v/v). The total concentrations of 10 PPCPs in the topsoil (0-20 cm deep) and vegetables were 4.06-19.0 and 2.33-189 μg/kg, respectively. Among the target PPCPs, acetyl-sulfamethoxazole (AC-SMX) had the highest concentration in both soil and vegetables (0.23-10.8 and 1.56-116 μg/kg, respectively). The total concentration of the 10 PPCPs among cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, and cucumber were 13.1-28.1, 10.3-28.3, 2.33-4.04, and 110-189 μg/kg, respectively. The total hazard quotients for the mixture of target PPCPs across all vegetables were 0.0007 and 0.0003 for toddlers and adults, respectively. Compared with groundwater irrigation, reclaimed water irrigation did not evidently affect the vegetable yields, soil-vegetable PPCP concentrations, and BCFs. In this study, we found no potential hazard to human health when people consumed vegetables grown using reclaimed water irrigation.

New Models for Estimating the Sorption of Sulfonamide and Tetracycline Antibiotics in Soils

Sulfonamides (SAs) and tetracyclines (TCs) are two classes of widely used antibiotics. There is a lack of easy models for estimating the parameters of antibiotic sorption in soils. In this work, a dataset of affinity coefficients (Kf and Kd) of seven SA/TC antibiotics (i.e., sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline) and associated soil properties was generated. Correlation analysis of these data showed that the affinity coefficients of the SAs were predominantly affected by soil organic matter and cation exchange capacity, while those of the TCs were largely affected by soil organic matter and pH. Pedotransfer functions for estimating Kf and Kd were built by multiple linear regression analysis and were satisfactorily validated. Their performances would be better for soils having higher organic matter content and lower pH. These pedotransfer functions can be used to aid environmental risk assessment, prioritization of antibiotics and identification of vulnerable soils.

Connecting the evidence about organic pollutant sorption on soils with environmental regulation and decision-making: A scoping review

There exists an increase of review articles of pollutant sorption on soils due to the relevance of this process in environmental fate. However, this information is not used to make environmental decisions. We conduct a scoping review to identify and categorize the state-of-the-art of pesticide sorption (organic pollutant model) and decision-making studies in 2015-2020 using databases (Web of Science, Scopus and ScieLo) to detect potential gaps and create a framework that guide the connection between scientific evidence and its institutionalization. We detect research gaps (inside sorption or decision-making studies) and evidence gaps (between sorption and decision-making) from literature based on five categories to describe sorption (sorbate-sorbent system, system variables to study the sorption process, objectives pursued by authors, experimental approaches to study the sorption process, and quantification of sorption) and four topics for regulatory contexts (sponsor contextualization, descriptive information, environmentally relevant issues and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)). The gaps included (i) unrelated study designs, (ii) unreliable causal mechanisms, (iii) unrelated SDGs, (iv) lack of collaboration, (v) lack of representativeness, (vi) lack of knowledge, (vii) lack of relevant studies, and (vii) unknown causal extrapolation. Our framework connected the gaps with relevant environmental issues and common research topics on sorption studies, including suggested solutions and inclusion of lacking SDG in literature. The framework can assist the science-policy interaction, promoting cooperation for different study designs, pollutant-soil systems, and socio-environmental applications, such as environmental fate and management, risk assessment, monitoring, remediation, and local regulations.

Influence of Organic Matter on the Sorption of Cefdinir, Memantine and Praziquantel on Different Soil and Sediment Samples

Pharmaceuticals are known for their great effects and applications in the treatment and suppression of various diseases in human and veterinary medicine. The development and modernization of science and technologies have led to a constant increase in the production and consumption of various classes of pharmaceuticals, so they pose a threat to the environment, which can be subjected to the sorption process on the solid phase. The efficiency of sorption is determined by various parameters, of which the physicochemical properties of the compound and the sorbent are very important. One of these parameters that determine pharmaceutical mobility in soil or sediment is the soil−water partition coefficient normalized to organic carbon (Koc), whose determination was the purpose of this study. The influence of organic matter, suspended in an aqueous solution of pharmaceutical (more precisely: cefdinir, memantine, and praziquantel), was studied for five different types of soil and sediment samples from Croatia. The linear, Freundlich, and Dubinin−Raduskevich sorption isotherms were used to determine specific constants such as the partition coefficient Kd, which directly describes the strength of sorbate and sorbent binding. The linear model proved to be the best with the highest correlation coefficients, R2 > 0.99. For all three pharmaceuticals, a positive correlation between sorption affinity described by Kd and Koc and the amount of organic matter was demonstrated.

Surface Water Processes Influencing Alterations in Pharmaceutical Chemical Composition following Wastewater Discharge into a Freshwater Estuary

The tidal freshwater Potomac River (TFPR) in the metropolitan Washington, DC region receives wastewater discharge from eight major wastewater treatment plants with the potential to impact water quality. A total of 85 pharmaceutical chemicals and personal care products (PPCPs) were analyzed in surface water and sediments using solid-phase extraction and QuEChERS, respectively, in conjunction with liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry-multiple reaction monitoring quantitation (LC-MS/MS-MRM). A total of 52 PPCPs were quantified in both surface water and sediment. The most frequently quantified PPCPs in water included caffeine, fexofenadine, nicotine, sulfamethoxazole, hydrochlorothiazide, MDA, desvenlafaxine, and metoprolol ranging from 10 to 360 ng/L, and in sediment included diphenhydramine, escitalopram, desvenlafaxine, fexofenadine, sertraline and triclocarban ranging from 20 to 120 ng/g (dry weight). Comparisons of PPCP constituents in WTP discharge and adjacent surface water showed altered compositions reflecting dispersal and transformation processes acted quickly following contact of effluent with surface water. Although the PPCPs were present at their greatest concentrations in surface water near the WTP discharge zones, PPCP concentrations rapidly attenuated yielding mainstem TFPR concentrations relatively consistent along the freshwater reach of the tidal range in the estuary. The PPCP concentrations in sediment maximized in the tributary shoals, but also decreased in the mainstem TFPR similarly to surface water. Compositional analysis showed sorption to geosolids was the most important factor in the loss of PPCPs following WTP discharge in the tributary embayments.

Spatial heterogeneity of particulate organic matter for the sorption of ciprofloxacin at the microstructure scale

Particulate organic matter (POM) is a major antibiotic sorbent of the active soil organic carbon pool. Until now, the spatial heterogeneity of POM for ciprofloxacin (CFC) sorption at the microstructure scale has not been quantified. To our knowledge, this is the first study that combines a batch sorption experiment, NanoSIMS, and a ¹³C isotopic tracer to expound the distribution characteristics of CFC and the dominant sorption components of POM. Four POMs separated from soils (wetland, oil waste field, and farmlands) were utilized to study the sorption mechanisms using batch experiments. POM separated from the wetland was utilized for further study at the microstructure scale. The results revealed that the POM had a great CFC sorption capacity ranging from 65.20 mg g^-1 to 77.51 mg g^-1. Both the kinetics and NanoSIMS results showed that the sorption mechanisms included surface distribution and intra-particle diffusion. The microstructural distribution characteristics exhibited a marginal accumulation tendency and a surface accumulation effect. A combination of the NanoSIMS with the pH and salinity results explained that CFC adsorption was dominated by the organic components of POM. Overall, the present study demonstrates that the characteristics and organic components of the POM played a decisive role in the CFC-POM interactions. This study provides the first evidence of the vector potential of CFC rereleased into the environment during the POM turnover process.

Determination of antimicrobial agents and their transformation products in an agricultural water-soil system modified with manure

Manure fertilization is the primary source of veterinary antimicrobials in the water-soil system. The research gap is the fate of antimicrobials after their release into the environment. This study aimed to provide a detailed and multi-faceted examination of fertilized cultivated fields using two types of manure (poultry and bovine) enriched with selected antimicrobials. The research focused on assessing the mobility and stability of antimicrobials in the water-soil system. Additionally, transformation products of antimicrobials in the environment were identified. The extraction (solid-phase extraction and/or solid-liquid extraction) and LC-MS/MS analysis procedures were developed to determine 14 antimicrobials in the soil and pore water samples. Ten out of fourteen antimicrobials were detected in manure-amended soil and pore water samples. The highest concentration in the soil was 109.1 ng g^-1 (doxycycline), while in pore water, it was 186.6 ng L^-1 (ciprofloxacin). Sixteen transformation products of antimicrobials were identified in the soil and soil-related pore water. The same transformation products were detected in both soil and soil pore water extracts, with significantly higher signal intensities observed in soil extracts than in water. Transformation products were formed in oxidation, carbonylation, and ring-opening reactions.

Sorption of cefdinir, memantine, praziquantel and trimethoprim in sediment and soil samples

The everyday use of various pharmaceuticals to treat humans or animals means that they are increasingly found in the environment. Contamination of the soil can cause the active ingredients to be strongly sorbed to the soil or sediment. In the worst case, they can also be expected to occur in the aquatic environment due to their different polarity. In this study, four drugs from different therapeutic classes (trimetoprim, memantine, cefdinir, praziquantel) were used in dissolved form in two sediment and three soil samples to obtain data that can describe their fate and behavior in the environment. The sorption affinities of the pharmaceuticals were described using linear, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich sorption isotherms. The highest K_d values were obtained for cefdinir, while memantine and praziquantel tended to be present in water due to their very low sorption coefficients. The studied influence of pH showed a negative trend for memantine and trimetoprim, while an increase in ionic strength resulted in higher K_d values for all drugs. The sorption mechanism for all tested samples was best described by the pseudo-secondary kinetic model (R² > 0.9999).

The pH dependence and role of fluorinated substituent of enoxacin binding to ferrihydrite

The sorption of antibiotics on iron (hydr)oxides is an important process that influences their environmental fate. Ferrihydrite (Fh) nanosized iron hydroxide is omnipresent in nature. However, the sorption mechanism of fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics on Fh is unclear. Here, a combined experimental and computational study was conducted to investigate the sorption of enoxacin (ENO) as one model of FQs on Fh. Pipemidic acid (PPA), as a structural analog of ENO, was selected to compare the effect of fluorinated substituent on the sorption mechanism. Results indicated that the average K_d values of ENO at pH = 7.0 and 8.0 were 1.72 and 2.75 times higher than those at pH in the ranges of 4.0-6.0 and 9.0-10.0, respectively. The main sorption mechanisms included electrostatic, hydrophobic interaction, and inner-sphere complexation. The fluorinated substituent of ENO facilitated its sorption on Fh through enhancing its hydrophobicity as well as modifying its dissociation constants and charge distribution. The findings give new insights into the significant influence of active fluorinated substituents on the environmental behaviors of fluorinated pharmaceuticals.

Experimental Data and Modeling the Adsorption-Desorption and Mobility Behavior of Ciprofloxacin in Sandy Silt Soil

The improved understanding of the behavior of antibiotics in soil is of great importance due to their environmental hazard and frequent detection. In this work, the adsorption-desorption and mobility behaviors of ciprofloxacin in sandy silt soil, affecting the fate of ciprofloxacin in the environment, were studied by a series of batch tests and column tests. In batch tests, the effects of contact time, initial ciprofloxacin concentration, sandy silt soil dosage, solution pH, and ionic strength on ciprofloxacin adsorption and desorption in sandy silt soil were considered. Adsorption results were satisfactorily modeled, with good fittings to the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.999) and Langmuir model (R2 > 0.991), with the value for Langmuir’s maximum adsorption capacity (qm) 5.50 mg g−1. Ciprofloxacin adsorption decreased sharply by increasing the pH from 7.0 to 10.0 and the ionic strength from 0.01 to 0.2 mol L−1 CaCl2. Comparatively, ciprofloxacin was more readily desorbed from sandy silt soil at alkaline and high ionic strength conditions. Breakthrough curves of ciprofloxacin obtained from the column experiments were described by the two-site model, Thomas model, and Yan mode. Of these models, the two-site model was the most suitable to describe the mobility of ciprofloxacin. The retardation factor (R) obtained in the two-site model was 345, suggesting strong adsorption affinity with ciprofloxacin on the sandy silt soil surface. The results from the Thomas model suggested the extremely small external and internal diffusion resistances. The Yan model was not suitable. Cation exchange interaction, electrostatic interaction, mechanical resistance, entrapment between porous media, and gravity sedimentation were proposed to be the important adsorption mechanisms.

Fate of contaminants of emerging concern in the reclaimed wastewater-soil-plant continuum

Reclaimed wastewater irrigation, a common agricultural practice in water-scarce regions, chronically exposes the agricultural environment to a wide range of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) including pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Here we provide new data and insights into the processes governing the translocation of CECs in the irrigation water-soil-plant continuum based on a comprehensive dataset from 445 commercial fields irrigated with reclaimed wastewater. We report on CEC exposures in irrigation water, soils, and edible produce (leafy greens, carrots, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, and citrus fruits). Our data show that CEC concentrations in irrigation water and their physiochemical properties (mainly charge and lipophilicity) are the main factors governing their translocation and accumulation in the soil-plant continuum. CECs exhibiting the highest detection frequency in plants (lamotrigine, venlafaxine, and carbamazepine) showed a reduction in their leaf accumulation factor with increasing soil organic matter content. The higher soil organic matter likely reduced the available CEC concentration in the soil solution due to soil-CEC interactions, leading to reduced uptake. Interestingly, the concentration of carbamazepine in the leaves showed a saturation-like trend when plotted against its concentration in the soils. This probably resulted from steady-state conditions when uptake equals in-planta decomposition. Our data indicate that due to continuous reclaimed wastewater irrigation, the soil acts as a sink for CECs. CECs in the soil reservoir can be desorbed into the soil solution during the rainy season and be taken up by rain-fed crops.

Immobilization of lead(Ⅱ) and zinc(Ⅱ) onto glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP): Adsorption properties and interaction mechanisms

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP), a microbial product that can be used as a bioflocculant, is critical to metal sequestration in the ecosystem. However, the relationship between GRSP and heavy metal has not been well explored. In this study, the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions on GRSP were investigated. Results reveal that the Pb(II) and Zn(II) adsorption closely conform to the pseudo second-order model, which indicates that the chemisorption of GRSP occurred after intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption process is influenced by the degree of pollution, pH value, GRSP content in the environment. In addition, scanning electron microscopy coupled with microanalysis (SEM-EDX) reveals that the surface structure of GRSP is irregularly blocky or flaky and metal ions are uniformly distributed on the surface of GRSP. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis show that the carboxyl and nitro groups on GRSP act as ligands to form complexes with two divalent metal ions. The interaction between GRSP and the metals is mainly surface complexation. This research further reveals the dynamic response of its structural components when GRSP sequestrates heavy metals in mangrove sediment and aqueous ecosystems, demonstrating a new perspective for the transport and transformation of heavy metals onto GRSP.

Comparison of sorption models to predict analyte loss during sample filtration and evaluation of the impact of filtration on data quality

Although filtration has been a widely applied sample pretreatment step in environmental analytical chemistry, its impact on the quality of the data produced is often underappreciated in the scientific community. The objective of this literature review and modeling exercise was to examine nine existing sorption models with input parameters including hydrophobic interactions, pH, and structural features to predict the loss of analytes during wastewater filtration due to sorption to suspended solids and to assess the impact of filtration on data quality. Models' sorption estimates were further validated with a set of comprehensive metadata collected and analyzed from 20 peer-reviewed research papers that reported physical measurements of the suspended solids sorbed fraction of analytes obtained during wastewater filtration of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Data on the impact of filtration were obtained from the literature for 156 organic compounds reported both for the dissolved and particulate bound analyte mass. Approximately 40% of CECs (62/156) showed significant filtration loss (>20%) as a result of the removal of suspended solids during filtration. The loss of analyte mass due to filtration ranged from <1% for atenolol to >95% for acenaphthene. Collected literature data were then used to evaluate the utility of sorption modeling to predict analyte losses during sample pretreatment. Among nine sorption models, three were found to predict filtration loss of at least 70% of the CECs evaluated within a range of ±20% of the actually measured filtration loss of analytes, assuming a suspended solid concentration of 200 mg/L and a fraction of organic carbon in suspended solids of 0.43. Thus, sorption modeling can help reduce error when calculating mass loadings based on samples filtered before analysis. It is concluded that the estimates could be further improved by considering the following factors: ionic interactions, characteristics of the water-borne sorbents, and filtration media properties.

Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Photoelectroactive Nanohybrid Filter towards Effective Micropollutant Decontamination

Herein, we report and demonstrate a photoelectrochemical filtration system that enables the effective decontamination of micropollutants from water. The key to this system was a photoelectric–active nanohybrid filter consisting of a carbon nanotube (CNT) and MIL–101(Fe). Various advanced characterization techniques were employed to obtain detailed information on the microstructure, morphology, and defect states of the nanohybrid filter. The results suggest that both radical and nonradical pathways collectively contributed to the degradation of antibiotic tetracycline, a model refractory micropollutant. The underlying working mechanism was proposed based on solid experimental evidences. This study provides new insights into the effective removal of micropollutants from water by integrating state–of–the–art advanced oxidation and microfiltration techniques.

Contaminants of emerging concerns in recycled water: Fate and risks in agroecosystems

Recycled water (RW) has been increasingly recognized as a valuable source of water for alleviating the global water crisis. When RW is used for agricultural irrigation, many contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are introduced into the agroecosystem. The ubiquity of CECs in field soil, combined with the toxic, carcinogenic, or endocrine-disrupting nature of some CECs, raises significant concerns over their potential risks to the environment and human health. Understanding such risks and delineating the fate processes of CECs in the water-soil-plant continuum contributes to the safe reuse of RW in agriculture. This review summarizes recent findings and provides an overview of CECs in the water-soil-plant continuum, including their occurrence in RW and irrigated soil, fate processes in agricultural soil, offsite transport including runoff and leaching, and plant uptake, metabolism, and accumulation. The potential ecological and human health risks of CECs are also discussed. Studies to date have shown limited accumulation of CECs in irrigated soils and plants, which may be attributed to multiple attenuation processes in the rhizosphere and plant, suggesting minimal health risks from RW-fed food crops. However, our collective understanding of CECs is rather limited and knowledge of their offsite movement and plant accumulation is particularly scarce for field conditions. Given a large number of CECs and their occurrence at trace levels, it is urgent to develop strategies to prioritize CECs so that future research efforts are focused on CECs with elevated risks for offsite contamination or plant accumulation. Irrigating specific crops such as feed crops and fruit trees may be a viable option to further minimize potential plant accumulation under field conditions. To promote the beneficial reuse of RW in agriculture, it is essential to understand the human health and ecological risks imposed by CEC mixtures and metabolites.

The mechanisms of iron modified montmorillonite in controlling mercury release across mercury-contaminated soil-air interface in greenhouse

Montmorillonite was modified with iron (Fe-MMT) for controlling mercury release across mercury-contaminated soil-air interface in greenhouse. With addition of Fe-MMT, although the root Hg contents in Brassica Pekinensis increased, the edible part (leaf) Hg concentrations decreased significantly, even achieved the Tolerance Limit of Mercury in Foods. The decrease of leaf Hg concentrations was attributed to the lower atmospheric Hg concentrations, which is caused by the lower soil Hg⁰ release fluxes. Besides the Fe-MMT can direct adsorb soil Hg⁰, it can also immobilize ionic Hg and decrease soil Hg reactivity via surface adsorption, chemical complexation, and situ co-precipitation. Then the contents of leachable Hg and the percentages of bioavailable speciation in soil were reduced, resulting in the soil Hg⁰ generation was inhibited and soil Hg⁰ release fluxes declined. Applying Fe-MMT to soil enhanced the diversity indexes of Streptomyces, which could promote the oxidation of soil Hg⁰ to Hg²⁺; subsequently, the soil Hg⁰ release fluxes decreased. After amending with Fe-MMT, the root Hg contents in Brassica Pekinensis increased because both the soil Hg and microorganisms loaded Hg could be adsorbed by iron oxides and retained on the root surface. This work can provide research basis for Fe-MMT application in Hg-contaminated soil in greenhouse.

Effects of Al substitution on sorption of diclofenac to Fe(III) (hydr)oxides: roles of phase transition and sorption mechanisms

Fe(III) (hydr)oxides commonly contained many metal impurities such as Al. The incorporation of Al might change the properties of minerals and consequently affect sorption behaviors of pollutants with polar functional groups (e.g., diclofenac (DCF)). In this study, batch experiments and microscale characterization were conducted to investigate the DCF sorption mechanisms to goethite and Al-substituted minerals. Goethite and Al-substituted products (including Al-goethite, Al-goethite-hematite, and Al-hematite) were synthesized with different Al contents (i.e., 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% (in mol)) by co-precipitation method. Due to difference of ionic radius between Al and Fe and formation of excessive -OH, Al substitution resulted in deviation of cell parameters from the Vegard line. Al substitution caused increasing -OH in Al-goethite and phase transformation caused decreasing -OH in Al-hematite. The total -OH in minerals was positively related to DCF sorption capacity. In the lower initial concentration range (0.4-9 mg/L), the sorption distribution coefficient (Kd) values of goethite, Al-goethite, and Al-hematite were 21.98, 22.25, and 21.18 L/kg, respectively. Desorption characteristics and ion strength effects indicated that DCF sorption to minerals occurred mainly through outer-sphere complexation. Fourier transform infrared analyses revealed that H-bonds could be formed through -OH of minerals and -COOH of DCF, and the H-bond strength on Al-hematite was stronger than that on goethite/Al-goethite. In the normal environmental pH (e.g., 6.0 to 8.0), Kd values of DCF decreased linearly with increasing pH. These findings are helpful for understanding of DCF migration in environment involving Al-substituted minerals.

Adsorption of a diverse range of pharmaceuticals to polyethylene microplastics in wastewater and their desorption in environmental matrices

It is proposed that microplastics discharged from wastewater treatment plants act as a vector of pharmaceuticals. In this study, adsorption of pharmaceuticals to polyethylene microplastics was investigated in municipal wastewater. Pharmaceuticals for study were selected to represent different speciation (anionic, cationic, and neutral) and a range of pH dependant octanol-water distribution coefficients (log D_OW). Findings revealed adsorption favoured those in cationic form with the greatest hydrophobicity (e.g., fluoxetine log D_OW 2.0 at pH 7.8). Adsorption of anionic pharmaceuticals was restricted due to repulsion with the microplastic's negatively charged surface. Only atorvastatin had any appreciable adsorption due to its comparatively high log D_OW value (2.9). Those pharmaceuticals predominantly in neutral form (carbamazepine and ketamine) with log D_OW values ≥2.4 had similar adsorption. Freundlich K_F values were 3400, 386, 284, 259 and 218 (mg kg^-1)(mg L^-1)^1/n for fluoxetine, propranolol, atorvastatin, ketamine, and carbamazepine, respectively. All pharmaceuticals with log D_OW values <1.0 (atenolol, gliclazide, bezafibrate, and ifosfamide) did not adsorb to microplastics, irrespective of their speciation. Changing composition of wastewater (pH, dilution with stormwater and NaCl addition) within the range expected for municipal wastewater had limited influence on adsorption. Pharmaceutical desorption from microplastics was assessed in river water and simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. Solution pH was considered the most important factor for pharmaceutical desorption, influencing both pharmaceutical speciation and microplastic surface charge. Greatest desorption was observed for the cationic pharmaceuticals in gastric fluids due to a reduced surface charge of the microplastics under low pH conditions. Up to 50% desorption of fluoxetine occurred in gastric fluid at 37 °C. These findings show that pharmaceuticals adsorbed to microplastics are 'bioavailable'. However, this is often overlooked as an exposure route to aquatic organisms because water samples are normally pre-filtered prior to chemical analysis.

Microplastic effects on soil system parameters: a meta-analysis study

Microplastics are generally considered as an emerging contaminant in the environment due to their toxic additives and transport of other contaminants. However, the potential threats of microplastics in soil should be concerned due to inconsistent research results. In this study, a meta-analysis based on 32 recent relevant studies was conducted to compare the response of soil system parameters including microbial community, aggregate structure, soil nutrient contents, and crop growth to the presence of microplastics. The results showed that microplastics presented no significant effects on soil dissolved organic carbon contents and the amounts of available phosphate, nitrate, and ammonium. Although microplastics would not significantly influence the diversity of soil microorganisms, they could significantly increase soil microorganism amounts with a standard mean difference at 19.32. We also found that microplastics tended to significantly decrease soil water stable macro-aggregate (> 0.25 mm) contents with a significantly negative standard mean difference (- 0.90) in meta-analysis. Moreover, soil microplastics seemed not to affect crop growth by having non-significant effects on both crop under-ground and above-ground biomasses. These results indicate that up to date, the main negative impacts caused by microplastics on soil systems could be their negative functions on soil aggregation.
