New perspectives on the anaerobic degradation of BTEX: Mechanisms, pathways, and intermediates

Aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTEX) can escape into the environment from oil and gas operations and manufacturing industries posing significant health risks to humans and wildlife. Unlike conventional clean-up methods used, biological approaches such as bioremediation can provide a more energy and labour-efficient and environmentally friendly option for sensitive areas such as nature reserves and cities, protecting biodiversity and public health. BTEX contamination is often concentrated in the subsurface of these locations where oxygen is rapidly depleted, and biodegradation relies on anaerobic processes. Thus, it is critical to understand the anaerobic biodegradation characteristics as it has not been explored to a major extent. This review presents novel insights into the degradation mechanisms under anaerobic conditions and presents a detailed description and interconnection between them. BTEX degradation can follow four activation mechanisms: hydroxylation, carboxylation, methylation, and fumarate addition. Hydroxylation is one of the mechanisms that explains the transformation of benzene into phenol, toluene into benzyl alcohol or p-cresol, and ethylbenzene into 1-phenylethanol. Carboxylation to benzoate is thought to be the primary mechanism of degradation for benzene. Despite being poorly understood, benzene methylation has been also reported. Moreover, fumarate addition is the most widely reported mechanism, present in toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene degradation. Further research efforts are required to better elucidate new and current alternative catabolic pathways. Likewise, a comprehensive analysis of the enzymes involved as well as the development of advance tools such as omic tools can reveal bottlenecks degradation steps and create more effective on-site strategies to address BTEX pollution.

Nutrient removal efficacy and microbial dynamics in constructed wetlands using Fe(III)-mineral substrates for low carbon-nitrogen ratio sewage treatment

This study evaluated the roles of two common sources of Fe(III)-minerals-volcanic rock (VR) and synthetic banded iron formations from waste iron tailings (BIF-W)-in vertical flow-constructed wetlands (VFCWs). The evaluation was conducted in the absence of critical environmental factors, including Fe(II), Fe(III), and soil organic matter (SOM), using metagenomic analysis and integrated correlation networks to predict nitrogen removal pathways. Our findings revealed that Fe(III)-minerals enhanced metabolic activities and cellular processes related to carbohydrate decomposition, thereby increasing the average COD removal rates by 10.7% for VR and 5.90% for BIF-W. Notably, VR improved nitrogen removal by 1.70% and 5.40% compared to BIF-W and the control, respectively. Fe(III)-mineral amendment in bioreactors also improved the retention of denitrification and nitrification bacteria (phylum Proteobacteria) and anammox bacteria (phylum Planctomycetes), with increases of 3.60% and 3.20% using VR compared to BIF-W. Metagenomic functional prediction indicated that the nitrogen removal mechanisms in VFCWs with low C/N ratios involve simultaneous partial nitrification, ANAMMOX, and denitrification (SNAD). Network-based analyses and correlation pathways further suggest that the advantages of Fe(III)-minerals are manifested in the enhancement of denitrification microorganisms. Microbial communities may be activated by the functional dissolution of Fe(III)-minerals, which improves the stability of SOM or the conversion of Fe(III)/Fe(II). This study provides new insights into the functional roles of Fe(III)-minerals in VFCWs at the microbial community level, and provides a foundation for developing Fe-based SNAD enhancement technologies.

Variability in Microbial Communities Driven by Particulate Matter on Human Facial Skin

Microbial communities are known to play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and can be used as an indicator for assessing environmental pollution. Numerous studies have revealed that air pollution can alter the structure of microbial communities, which may increase health risks. Nevertheless, the relationships between microbial communities and particulate matter (PM) caused by air pollution in terms of health risk assessment are not well understood. This study aimed to validate the influences of PM chemical compositions on microbial communities and assess the associated health risks. Our results, based on similarity analysis, revealed that the stability structure of the microbial communities had a similarity greater than 73%. In addition, the altered richness and diversity of microbial communities were significantly associated with PM chemical compositions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exerted a positive influence on microbial communities in different environmental variables. Additionally, a stronger linear correlation was observed between hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and the richness of microbial communities. All estimated health risks from PM chemical compositions, calculated under different environmental variables, significantly exceeded the acceptable level by a factor of more than 49. Cr and 1,2-Dibromoethane displayed dual adverse effects of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Overall, the study provides insights into the fundamental mechanisms of the variability in microbial communities driven by PM, which may support the crucial role of PM chemical compositions in the risk of microorganisms in the atmospheric environment.

Performance evaluation and metagenomic analysis of sequencing batch reactor under transient 2,4,6-trichlorophenol shock

The transient chlorophenol shock under some emergency conditions might directly affect the pollutant removal of bioreactor. Therefore, the recovery of bioreactor performance after transient chlorophenol shock is a noteworthy issue. In the present research, the performance, antioxidant response, microbial succession and functional genes of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were evaluated under transient 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) shock. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal efficiencies decreased sharply in the first 4 days after 60 mg/L 2,4,6-TCP shock for 24 h and gradually recovered to normal in the subsequent 8 days. The nitrogen removal rates and their corresponding enzymatic activities rapidly decreased after transient 2,4,6-TCP shock and then gradually increased to normal. The increase of antioxidant enzymatic activity, Cu-Zn SOD genes and Fe-Mn SOD genes contributed to the recovery of SBR performance. The abundance of genes encoding ammonia monooxygenase and hydroxylamine dehydrogenase decreased after transient 2,4,6-TCP shock, including amoA, amoC and nxrA. Thauera, Dechloromonas and Candidatus_Competibacter played key roles in the restorative process, which provided stable abundances of narG, norB , norC and nosZ. The results will deeply understand into the effect of transient 2,4,6-TCP shock on bioreactor performance and provide theoretical basis to build promising recoveries strategy of bioreactor performance.

Performance and mechanism of pilot-scale carbon fibers enhanced ecological floating beds for urban tail water treatment in optimized ecological floating beds water surface coverage

A pilot-scale carbon fibers enhanced ecological floating beds (CF-EFBs) was constructed. Compared to EFBs without carbon fibers enhancement, CF-EFBs have the better removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), the removal efficiencies were 3.19, 3.49, and 2.74 times higher than EFBs. Throughout the pilot test (under three different coverage rates), the concentrations of COD, TIN and TP of effluent were 18.11 ± 4.52 mgL-1, 1.95 ± 0.92 mgL-1 and 0.13 ± 0.08 mgL-1. Meanwhile, the average removal of TIN, TP and COD from tailwater was 0.96 gm-2d-1, 0.07 gm-2d-1 and 2.37 gm-2d-1 respectively. When the coverage was 30 %, the CF-EFBs had better nitrogen removal effectiveness (TIN purification ability of 1.49 gm-2d-1). The enrichment of denitrifying bacteria, such as Aridibacter, Nitrospira, Povalibacter, and Phaeodactylibacter increased denitrification efficiency. These results verified the feasibility of CF-EFBs in tailwater treatment at pilot-scale, which was of great significance for the practical application of CF-EFBs.

Flexible catabolism of monoaromatic hydrocarbons by anaerobic microbiota adapting to oxygen exposure

Microbe-mediated anaerobic degradation is a practical method for remediation of the hazardous monoaromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes) under electron-deficient contaminated sites. However, how do the anaerobic functional microbes adapt to oxygen exposure and flexibly catabolize BTEX remain poorly understood. We investigated the switches of substrate spectrum and bacterial community upon oxygen perturbation in a nitrate-amended anaerobic toluene-degrading microbiota which was dominated by Aromatoleum species. DNA-stable isotope probing demonstrated that Aromatoleum species was involved in anaerobic mineralization of toluene. Metagenome-assembled genome of Aromatoleum species harbored both the nirBD-type genes for nitrate reduction to ammonium coupled with toluene oxidation and the additional meta-cleavage pathway for aerobic benzene catabolism. Once the anaerobic microbiota was fully exposed to oxygen and benzene, 1.05 ± 0.06% of Diaphorobacter species rapidly replaced Aromatoleum species and flourished to 96.72 ± 0.01%. Diaphorobacter sp. ZM was isolated, which was not only able to utilize benzene as the sole carbon source for aerobic growth and but also innovatively reduce nitrate to ammonium with citrate/lactate/glucose as the carbon source under anaerobic conditions. This study expands our understanding of the adaptive mechanism of microbiota for environmental redox disturbance and provides theoretical guidance for the bioremediation of BTEX-contaminated sites.

Fe(II) Oxidation Shaped Functional Genes and Bacteria Involved in Denitrification and Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium from Different Paddy Soils

Microbial nitrate reduction can drive Fe(II) oxidation in anoxic environments, affecting the nitrous oxide emission and ammonium availability. The nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation usually causes severe cell encrustation via chemodenitrification and potentially inhibits bacterial activity due to the blocking effect of secondary minerals. However, it remains unclear how Fe(II) oxidation and subsequent cell encrustation affect the functional genes and bacteria for denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Here, bacteria were enriched from different paddy soils with and without Fe(II) under nitrate-reducing conditions. Fe(II) addition decelerated nitrate reduction and increased NO2- accumulation, due to the rapid Fe(II) oxidation and cell encrustation in the periplasm and on the cell surface. The N2O accumulation was lower in the treatment with Fe(II) and nitrate than that in the treatment with nitrate only, although the proportions of N2O and NH4+ to the reduced NO3- were low (3.25% ∼ 6.51%) at the end of incubation regardless of Fe(II) addition. The dominant bacteria varied from soils under nitrate-reducing conditions, while Fe(II) addition shaped a similar microbial community, including Dechloromonas, Azospira, and Pseudomonas. Fe(II) addition increased the relative abundance of napAB, nirS, norBC, nosZ, and nirBD genes but decreased that of narG and nrfA, suggesting that Fe(II) oxidation favored denitrification in the periplasm and NO2--to-NH4+ reduction in the cytoplasm. Dechloromonas dominated the NO2--to-N2O reduction, while Thauera mediated the periplasmic nitrate reduction and cytoplasmic NO2--to-NH4+ during Fe(II) oxidation. However, Thauera showed much lower abundance than the dominant genera, resulting in slow nitrate reduction and limited NH4+ production. These findings provide new insights into the response of denitrification and DNRA bacteria to Fe(II) oxidation and cell encrustation in anoxic environments.

Enhancing nitrate attenuation in groundwater via selectively applying surface agricultural practices: A novel and sustainable strategy for non-point source pollution mitigation

Non-point nitrate pollution in groundwater has been accelerated by agricultural development, but sustainable nitrogen removal is a challenge because of its wide distribution and negative side effects. Surface agricultural practices (SAPs), which are demonstrably effective in driving the downward infiltration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), have not been well explored for their potential to enhance nitrate attenuation in groundwater. Therefore, a combination of soil column and groundwater incubation experiments was performed to investigate the carbon and nitrogen responses to different SAPs (manure fertilization, lucerne planting, and straw return). The soil column experiment showed that SAPs promoted DOC and reduced nitrate leaching into groundwater, and straw treatment witnessed the highest DOC leaching flux (252.71 g m^-2 yr^-1) and lowest nitrate leaching flux (9.51 g m^-2 yr^-1). The groundwater incubation experiment showed that leachates from the straw treatment displayed the best denitrification-enhancement performance, with the highest NO₃^--N reduction efficiency (92.93%) and rate (1.627 mg/day), N₂ selectivity (99.78%), and net nitrogen removal (0.09 mg). Furthermore, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry confirmed that CHOS molecules with lower double bond equivalents (0-5) and larger carbon numbers (10-15) were more accessible to denitrifiers. This study provides a new path for the sustainable control of non-point source nitrate pollution.

Lead or cadmium co-contamination alters benzene and toluene degrading bacterial communities

Co-contamination of hydrocarbons with heavy metals in soils often complicates and hinders bioremediation. A comprehensive characterization of site-specific degraders at contaminated sites can help determine if in situ bioremediation processes are sufficient. This study aimed to identify differences in benzene and toluene degradation rates and the microbial communities enriched under aerobic conditions when different concentrations of Cd and Pb are introduced. Microcosms were used to study the degradation of 0.23 mM benzene or 0.19 mM toluene under various concentrations of Pb (up to 240 µM) and Cd (up to 440 µM). Soil collected from a stormwater retention basin receiving runoff from a large parking lot was utilized to seed the microcosms. The hydrocarbon degradation time and rates were measured. After further rounds of amendment and degradation of benzene and toluene, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR were used to ascertain the microbial communities enriched under the various concentrations of the heavy metals. The initial degradation time for toluene and benzene was 7 to 9 days and 10 to 13 days, respectively. Degradation rates were similar for each hydrocarbon despite the concentration and presence of metal co-contaminant, however, the enriched microbial communities under each condition differed. Microcosms without metal co-contaminant contained a diversity of putative benzene and toluene degrading bacteria. Cd strongly reduced the richness of the microbial communities. With higher levels of heavy metals, genera such as Ralstonia, Cupriavidus, Azoarcus, and Rhodococcus became more dominant under various conditions. The study finds that highly efficient benzene- and toluene-degrading consortia can develop under variations of heavy metal co-contamination, but the consortia are dependent on the heavy metal type and concentrations.

Evaluation of potential human health risks from exposure to volatile organic compounds in contaminated urban groundwater in the Sava river aquifer, Belgrade, Serbia

The oil pollutant in the Sava River aquifer in the residential area of Belgrade, Serbia was investigated in order to analyze the extent, origin and spatial distribution of the pollution, with the aim to estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the compounds detected. Analytical methods indicated that the dominant compounds in this oil pollutant were gasoline range organic compounds. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) were identified as compounds of concern and quantified by headspace gas chromatography. The concentrations of benzene measured at all sampling points were higher than the remediation value while the maximum concentrations of BTEX quantified were among the highest concentrations of these compounds reported in the petroleum-contaminated aquifers in the world. The assessment of the human health risks from exposure to BTEX-covered industrial scenario for adult receptors and residential scenario for adult receptors and children. The exposure routes analyzed were dermal contact with and ingestion of contaminated water, considering both cancer and non-cancer effects. The analysis of the lifetime incremental cancer risk indicated the potential for adverse health effects for human exposure at the investigated location, and because of that it was interpreted as an unacceptable risk level or risks of high priority which required immediate consideration for remedial measures at this location. A complete set of mitigation measures was proposed including: groundwater decontamination treatment, installation of filters for tap water, development of the system for monitoring of BTEX in the groundwater and development of the emergency response capacities at this location.

Electrodialysis ion-exchange membrane bioreactor (EDIMB) to remove nitrate from water: Optimization of operating conditions and kinetics analysis

Nitrate pollution has become a worldwide problem. In this study, we remove nitrate from water by electrodialysis ion-exchange membrane bioreactor (EDIMB) and enabling simultaneous nitrate enrichment and denitrification. In this reactor, nitrate migrated from the water chamber to the biological chamber via electrodialysis and was degraded by microorganisms. The effects of voltage and biomass concentration on the reactor performance were examined, and the kinetics data of the water chamber and biological chamber were fitted. The experimental results showed that the migration of nitrate in the water chamber conformed to the first-order model, and the constructed zero-Michaelis-Menten model described changes in nitrate concentration in the biological chamber. Furthermore, when the inflow nitrate concentration was 40 mg N/L, 5 V was the best voltage, and 3.00 g VSS/L was the best biomass concentration. The nitrate removal rate in the water chamber was 98.94%, and there was no accumulation of nitrate or nitrite in the biological chamber. Compared with traditional ED processes, the nitrate removal efficiency was 8.86% higher, and the current efficiency was 22.14% higher. The total organic carbon (TOC) of the water chamber was only 1.43 mg C/L, which proves that the structure of the EDIMB confined the denitrifying bacteria and organic carbon donors in the biological chamber and avoided secondary pollution in the water chamber. Microbial community analysis showed that Thauera (66.06%) was the dominant bacterium in the EDIMB system, and Azoarcus (9.81%) was a minor denitrifying genus.

Coupled effect of porous network and water content on the natural attenuation of diesel in unsaturated soils

The natural attenuation potential of a vadose zone against diesel is critical for optimizing remedial actions and determining groundwater vulnerability to contamination. Here, diesel attenuation in unsaturated soils was systematically examined to develop a qualitative relationship between physical soil properties and the natural attenuation capacity of a vadose zone against diesel. The uniformity coefficient (C_u) and water saturation (S_w, %) were considered as the proxies reflecting the degree of effects by porous network and water content in different soils, respectively. These, in turn, are related to the primary diesel attenuation mechanisms of volatilization and biodegradation. The volatilization of diesel was inversely proportional to C_u and S_w, which could be attributed to effective pore channels facilitating gas transport. Conversely, biodegradation was highly proportional to C_u under unsaturated conditions (S_w = 35-71%), owing to nutrients typically associated with fine soil particles. The microbial community in unsaturated soils was affected by S_w rather than C_u. The overall diesel attenuation including volatilization and biodegradation was optimized at S_w = 35% for all tested soils.

How different nitrogen fertilizers affect arsenic mobility in paddy soil after straw incorporation?

In straw return fields, nitrogen-fertilizers are added to mitigate microbial competition for nitrogen with plants. However, in arsenic (As)-contaminated paddy fields, the specific effects of different nitrogen fertilizers on As mobility after straw incorporation and the interactions among iron(Fe)/carbon(C)/nitrogen(N)/As are not well understood. In the reported microcosm experiment we monitored As-mobility as a function of different dosages of KNO₃, NH₄Cl and rice straw incorporation. Addition of both KNO₃ and NH₄Cl significantly inhibited the As mobilization induced by straw incorporation. Following the KNO₃ addition, the As concentration in porewater dropped by 51-66% after 2 days of the incubation by restraining Fe reduction and enhancing Fe oxidation. High-dose NH₄Cl addition reduced As in porewater by 22-43% throughout the incubation by decreasing porewater pH. High-throughput sequencing results demonstrated that KNO₃ addition enriches both the denitrifying and Fe-oxidizing bacteria, while diminishing Fe-reducing bacteria; NH₄Cl addition has the opposite effect on Fe-reducing bacteria. Network analysis revealed that As and Fe concentrations in porewater were positively correlated with the abundance of denitrifying and Fe-reducing bacteria. This study broadens our insight into the As biogeochemistry associated with the N/C/Fe balance in soil, which are of great significance for agronomic management and mitigation the risk of As-contaminated paddy fields.

Dual roles of dissolved organic nitrogen in groundwater nitrogen cycling: Nitrate precursor and denitrification promoter

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) has been reported to be prevalent in groundwater worldwide. Owing to the diversity of physicochemical properties, DON plays complex roles in nitrogen cycling processes, which has further implications for nitrate (NO₃^--N) pollution control in groundwater. To characterize these crucial roles, we investigated the effects of three types of DON (amino acid, urea, and protein) on NO₃^--N accumulation in groundwater with a 60-day incubation experiment and established quantitative correlations between microbial indicators (bacterial communities and nitrogen functional genes) and nitrogen content. The results showed that NO₃^--N content increased by 30.3% and 38.8% and was strongly correlated with the presence of amino acid and urea; however, the addition of protein did not lead to an additional increase in NO₃^--N, possibly due to different extents of mineralization and denitrification caused by different types of DON. Molecular biological experiments demonstrated that Nitrospira (1.8-3.2%) contributed to nitrification in the urea treatment, whereas Arthrobacter (2.0-6.9%) and Thermomonas (11.9-13.1%) were key communities controlling denitrification in amino acid and protein treatments. amoA and nxrA were continuously enriched in the presence of urea; however, amino acid and protein were strongly correlated with napA-dominated and narG-dominated denitrification processes, with the path coefficient - 2.912 and - 2.450 respectively. Combined analyses showed that DON with distinct physicochemical properties played dual roles (NO₃^--N precursor and denitrification promoter) to varying degrees, which could have significant impacts on NO₃^--N accumulation in groundwater. This study may provide guidance for environmental risk evaluation and control strategies for NO₃^--N pollution in groundwater.

Degradation of diclofenac via sequential reduction-oxidation by Ru/Fe modified biocathode dual-chamber bioelectrochemical system: Performance, pathways and degradation mechanisms

A sequential reduction-oxidation for DCF degradation was proposed by alternating anaerobic/aerobic conditions at Ru/Fe-biocathode in a dual-chamber bioelectrochemical system (BES). Results showed that Ru/Fe-electrode was successfully fabricated by in-situ electro-deposition, which was rough and uniformly distributed with Ru⁰ and Fe⁰ particles. The morphologic changing and biocompatibility were favorable to increase the surface area and enhance microbial adhesion on Ru/Fe-electrode. At an applied voltage of 0.6 V, the potential and impedance of Ru/Fe-biocathode were -0.80 V and 26 Ω, respectively, lower than that of carbon-felt-biocathode. It led to a higher DCF degradation efficiency of 93.2% under anaerobic conditions, which was superior to that of 88.0% under aerobic conditions. Using NaHCO₃ as carbon source, DCF removal efficiency increased with increasing applied voltage, but decreased with increasing initial DCF concentration. Thirteen intermediates were measured, and two degradation pathways were proposed, among which sequential reduction-oxidation of DCF was the main pathway, dechlorination intermediates were first generated by [H] attacked under anaerobic conditions, further oxidized by microbes and OH attacked under aerobic conditions, achieving 69.6% of mineralization. After 4 d of reaction, microcystis aeruginosa growth inhibition rate decreased from 22.9 to 8.0%, signifying a significant reduction in biotoxicity. Bacteria (e.g. Nitrobacter, Nitrosomonas, Pseudofulvimonas, Aquamicrobium, Sulfurvermis, Lentimicrobiaceae, Anaerobineaceae, Bacteroidales, Hydrogenedensaceae, Dethiosulfatibacter and Azoarcus) for DCF degradation were enriched in Ru/Fe-biocathode. Microbes in Ru/Fe-biocathode had established defense mechanisms to acclimate to the unfriendly environment, while Ru/Fe-biocathode possessed higher nitrification and denitrification activities than carbon-felt-biocathode, and Ru/Fe-biocathode might be of aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation activities. DCF could be mineralized by the synergistic reaction between Ru/Fe and bacteria under sequential anaerobic/aerobic conditions.

Effect of tetracycline on nitrogen removal in Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) System

The effect of tetracycline (TC) on nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants has become a new problem. This study investigated the effects of TC on nitrogen removal using a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor system. The results showed that there was no significant effect on nitrogen removal performance when the concentration of TC was 5 mg/L, and that the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency could reach 75–77%. However, when the concentration of TC increased to 10 mg/L, the denitrification performance was affected and the TN removal efficiency decreased to 58%. The abundance of denitrifying bacteria such as those in the genus Thauera decreased, and TC-resistant bacteria gradually became dominant. At a TC concentration of 10 mg/L, there were also increases and decreases, respectively, in the abundance of resistance and denitrification functional genes. The inhibitory effect of TC on denitrification was achieved mainly by the inhibition of nitrite-reducing bacteria.

Effects of rare earth elements on bacteria in rhizosphere, root, phyllosphere and leaf of soil-rice ecosystem

The effects of rare earth mining on rice biomass, rare earth element (REE) content and bacterial community structure was studied through pot experiment. The research shows that the REE content in rice roots, shoots and grains was significantly positive correlated with that in soil, and the dry weight of rice roots, shoots and grains was highly correlated with soil physical and chemical properties, nutrient elements and REE contents; The exploitation of rare earth minerals inhibited a-diversity of endophytic bacteria in rhizosphere, root, phyllosphere and leaf of rice, significantly reduced the abundance index, OTU number, Chao, Ace index and also significantly reduced the diversity index-Shannon index, and also reduced uniformity index: Pielou's evenness index, which caused β-diversity of bacteria to be quite different. The exploitation of rare earth minerals reduces the diversity of bacteria, but forms dominant bacteria, such as Burkholderia, Bacillus, Buttiauxella, Acinetobacter, Bradyrhizobium, Candida koribacter, which can degrade the pollutants formed by exploitation of rare earth minerals, alleviate the compound pollution of rare earth and ammonia nitrogen, and also has the function of fixing nitrogen and resisting rare earth stress; The content of soil available phosphorus in no-mining area is lower, and the dominant bacteria of Pantoea formed in such soil, which has the function of improving soil phosphorus availability. Rare earth elements and physical and chemical properties of soil affect the community structure of bacteria in rhizosphere and phyllosphere of rice, promote the parallel movement of some bacteria in rhizosphere, root, phyllosphere and leaf of rice, promote the construction of community structure of bacteria in rhizosphere and phyllosphere of rice, give full play to the growth promoting function of Endophytes, and promote the growth of rice. The results showed that the exploitation of rare earth minerals has formed the dominant endophytic bacteria of rice and ensured the yield of rice in the mining area, however, the mining of mineral resources causes the compound pollution of rare earth and ammonia nitrogen, which makes REE content of rice in mining area significantly higher than that in non-mining area, and the excessive rare earth element may enter the human body through the food chain and affect human health, so the food security in the REE mining area deserves more attention.

Proteogenomic analysis of Georgfuchsia toluolica revealed unexpected concurrent aerobic and anaerobic toluene degradation

Denitrifying Betaproteobacteria play a key role in the anaerobic degradation of monoaromatic hydrocarbons. We performed a multi-omics study to better understand the metabolism of the representative organism Georgfuchsia toluolica strain G5G6 known as a strict anaerobe coupling toluene oxidation with dissimilatory nitrate and Fe(III) reduction. Despite the genomic potential for degradation of different carbon sources, we did not find sugar or organic acid transporters, in line with the inability of strain G5G6 to use these substrates. Using a proteomics analysis, we detected proteins of fumarate-dependent toluene activation, membrane-bound nitrate reductase, and key components of the metal-reducing (Mtr) pathway under both nitrate- and Fe(III)-reducing conditions. High abundance of the multiheme cytochrome MtrC implied that a porin-cytochrome complex was used for respiratory Fe(III) reduction. Remarkably, strain G5G6 contains a full set of genes for aerobic toluene degradation, and we detected enzymes of aerobic toluene degradation under both nitrate- and Fe(III)-reducing conditions. We further detected an ATP-dependent benzoyl-CoA reductase, reactive oxygen species detoxification proteins, and cytochrome c oxidase indicating a facultative anaerobic lifestyle of strain G5G6. Correspondingly, we found diffusion through the septa a substantial source of oxygen in the cultures enabling concurrent aerobic and anaerobic toluene degradation by strain G5G6.

Contamination characteristics of chlorinated hydrocarbons in a fractured karst aquifer using TMVOC and hydro-chemical techniques

In this study, we investigated a fractured karst aquifer polluted by chlorinated hydrocarbons to determine the contamination characteristics of the main hydrocarbon components. The natural attenuation processes of representative components were simulated and forecasted using TMVOC and hydro-chemical components (NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, HCO₃^- Cl^- and δ¹³C_DIC). The impact of hydrocarbon compounds on the hydro-chemical ions were estimated, and their historical contamination characteristics were also reconstructed. Results showed that the dynamic characteristics of Trichloromethane and 1,1,2-Trichlorethane can indicate those of chlorinated hydrocarbons, where the rate of natural attenuation was observed to decrease with decreasing concentrations of hydrocarbon compounds. Additionally, the long-term variation characteristics in groundwater levels showed that the relatively stable hydrodynamic field conditions enabled the simulation of the natural attenuation processes of chlorinated hydrocarbons. The simulation which also considered the biodegradation processes showed that the use of TMVOC and hydro-chemical parameters may better describe natural attenuation processes. Over 3 years (from 2017 to 2019), the average percentage of biodegradation in the total natural attenuation was estimated to be 88.35%. Similarly, Trichloromethane and 1,1,2-Trichlorethane are forecasted to have no health hazards in 10 and 15 years, respectively. The contribution rates of biodegradation to HCO₃^- and Cl^- in the fractured karst aquifer varied with the concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons. Overall, the findings and methods in this work have significant contributions for advancing remediation developments of petroleum hydrocarbons, especially in karst environments that are highly susceptible to contamination.

BTEX biodegradation is linked to bacterial community assembly patterns in contaminated groundwater ecosystem

The control of degrader populations and the stochasticity and certainty of the microbial community in contaminated groundwater are not well-understood. In this study, a long-term contaminated groundwater ecosystem was selected to investigate the impact of BTEX on microbial communities and how microbial communities respond to BTEX pollution. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic sequencing provided insights on microbial community assemblage patterns and their role in BTEX cleaning. The operational taxonomy units (OTUs) in the contaminated groundwater ecosystem were clustered distinguishably between the Plume and the Deeper Zone (lower contaminated zone). βNTI analysis revealed that the assembly strategies of abundant and rare OTU subcommunities preferred deterministic processes. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) and mantel testing indicated that benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) strongly drove the abundant OTU subcommunity, while the rare OTU subcommunity was only weakly affected. Deltaproteobacteria, the most dominant degrading microorganism, contains the complete degradation genes in the plume layer. In summary, our finding revealed that BTEX was the major factor in shaping the microbial community structure, and functional bacteria contribute greatly to water cleaning. Investigating the pattern of microbial community assembly will provide insights into the ecological controls of contaminant degradation in groundwater.

Development of autotrophic and heterotrophic consortia via immobilized microbial beads for chemical wastewater treatment, using PTA wastewater as an approach

Studies on the symbiosis of microalgae-bacteria have been accelerating as a mean for wastewater remediation. However, there were few reports about the microalgae-bacteria consortia for chemical wastewater treatment. The aim of the present study is to develop an autotrophic and heterotrophic consortium for chemical wastewater treatment and probe whether and how bacteria could benefit from the microalgae during the treatment process, using PTA wastewater as an approach. A process-dependent strategy was applied. First of all, the results showed that the sludge beads with the sludge concentration of 30 g/L were the optimal one with the COD removal rate at 84.8% but the ceiling effect occurred (COD removal rate < 90%) even several common reinforcement methods were applied. Additionally, by adding the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, a microalgae-activated sludge consortium was formed inside the immobilized beads, which provided better performance to shatter the ceiling effect. The COD remove rate was higher than 90%, regardless of the activated sludge was pre-culture or not. COD removal capacity could also be improved (COD removal rate > 92%) when LEDs light belt was offered as an advanced light condition. Biochemical assay and DNA analysis indicated that the microalgae could form an internal circulation of substances within the activated sludge and drove the microbial community to success and the corresponding gene functions, like metabolism and.

Lindane degradation in wet-dry cycling soil as affected by aging and microbial toxicity of biochar

This study determined the degradation of lindane in soil amended with biochar to evaluate the effects of biochar aging and microbial toxicity. Two biochars were prepared at 400 and 600 °C (BC₄₀₀ and BC₆₀₀) and subjected to acid washing to remove nutrition (WBC₄₀₀ and WBC₆₀₀). After 89 days of incubation under the alternate "wet-dry" conditions, scanning electron microscopy showed that acid washing rendered biochars especially susceptible to aging with structural collapse and fragmentation, with less surface covering. Aging impeded the release of toxic substances in BC₄₀₀ and BC₆₀₀ with reduced toxicity to degrading microorganisms. Lindane degradation was somewhat stimulated by biochar nutrition but mainly inhibited by adsorption. Acid washing facilitated the release of toxic substances and additionally reduced lindane degradation. The variations in fatty acid saturation degree (SFA/UFA) in soils confirmed the microbial toxicity of 5% WBC₄₀₀ > 5% BC₄₀₀ > 5% BC₆₀₀ > 5% WBC₆₀₀. High-throughput DNA sequencing showed that biochar delayed the formation of dominant degrading microbial communities in soil. Lindane degradation was completed by joint Sphingomonas, Flaviolibacter, Parasegetibacter, Azoarcus, Bacillus and Anaerolinaea. These findings are helpful for better understanding the effect of biochar in soil on long-term degradation of persistent organic pollutants.

The relationships of present vegetation, bacteria, and soil properties with soil organic matter characteristics in moist acidic tundra in Alaska

Soil organic matter (SOM) is related to vegetation, soil bacteria, and soil properties; however, not many studies link all these parameters simultaneously, particularly in tundra ecosystems vulnerable to climate change. Our aim was to describe the relationships between vegetation, bacteria, soil properties, and SOM composition in moist acidic tundra by integrating physical, chemical, and molecular methods. A total of 70 soil samples were collected at two different depths from 36 spots systematically arranged over an area of about 300 m × 50 m. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene were used to identify the molecular compositions of the SOM and bacterial community, respectively. Vegetation and soil physicochemical properties were also measured. The sampling sites were grouped into three, based on their SOM compositions: Sphagnum moss-derived SOM, lipid-rich materials, and aromatic-rich materials. Our results show that SOM composition is spatially structured and linked to microtopography; however, the vegetation, soil properties, and bacterial community composition did not show overall spatial structuring. Simultaneously, soil properties and bacterial community composition were the main factors explaining SOM compositional variation, while vegetation had a residual effect. Verrucomicrobia and Acidobacteria were related to polysaccharides, and Chloroflexi was linked to aromatic compounds. These relationships were consistent across different hierarchical levels. Our results suggest that SOM composition at a local scale is closely linked with soil factors and the bacterial community. Comprehensive observation of ecosystem components is recommended to understand the in-situ function of bacteria and the fate of SOM in the moist acidic tundra.

Anaerobic degradation of xenobiotic organic contaminants (XOCs): The role of electron flow and potential enhancing strategies

In groundwater, deep soil layer, sediment, the widespread of xenobiotic organic contaminants (XOCs) have been leading to the concern of human health and eco-environment safety, which calls for a better understanding on the fate and remediation of XOCs in anoxic matrices. In the absence of oxygen, bacteria utilize various oxidized substances, e.g. nitrate, sulphate, metallic (hydr)oxides, humic substance, as terminal electron acceptors (TEAs) to fuel anaerobic XOCs degradation. Although there have been increasing anaerobic biodegradation studies focusing on species identification, degrading pathways, community dynamics, systematic reviews on the underlying mechanism of anaerobic contaminants removal from the perspective of electron flow are limited. In this review, we provide the insight on anaerobic biodegradation from electrons aspect - electron production, transport, and consumption. The mechanism of the coupling between TEAs reduction and pollutants degradation is deconstructed in the level of community, pure culture, and cellular biochemistry. Hereby, relevant strategies to promote anaerobic biodegradation are proposed for guiding to an efficient XOCs bioremediation.

New Frontiers of Anaerobic Hydrocarbon Biodegradation in the Multi-Omics Era

The accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons in the environment substantially endangers terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Many microbial strains have been recognized to utilize aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons under aerobic conditions. Nevertheless, most of these pollutants are transferred by natural processes, including rain, into the underground anaerobic zones where their degradation is much more problematic. In oxic zones, anaerobic microenvironments can be formed as a consequence of the intensive respiratory activities of (facultative) aerobic microbes. Even though aerobic bioremediation has been well-characterized over the past few decades, ample research is yet to be done in the field of anaerobic hydrocarbon biodegradation. With the emergence of high-throughput techniques, known as omics (e.g., genomics and metagenomics), the individual biodegraders, hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities and metabolic pathways, interactions can be described at a contaminated site. Omics approaches provide the opportunity to examine single microorganisms or microbial communities at the system level and elucidate the metabolic networks, interspecies interactions during hydrocarbon mineralization. Metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics, for example, can shed light on the active genes and proteins and functional importance of the less abundant species. Moreover, novel unculturable hydrocarbon-degrading strains and enzymes can be discovered and fit into the metabolic networks of the community. Our objective is to review the anaerobic hydrocarbon biodegradation processes, the most important hydrocarbon degraders and their diverse metabolic pathways, including the use of various terminal electron acceptors and various electron transfer processes. The review primarily focuses on the achievements obtained by the current high-throughput (multi-omics) techniques which opened new perspectives in understanding the processes at the system level including the metabolic routes of individual strains, metabolic/electric interaction of the members of microbial communities. Based on the multi-omics techniques, novel metabolic blocks can be designed and used for the construction of microbial strains/consortia for efficient removal of hydrocarbons in anaerobic zones.

Robust nitrate removal and bioenergy generation with elucidating functional microorganisms under carbon constraint in a novel multianode tidal constructed wetland coupled with microbial fuel cell

This study investigated synthetic wastewater treatment under low inflow C/N ratio and characterized NO₃^--N-transforming and electricity-producing bacteria in a multi-anode tidal constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (TFCW-MFC). The optimal concurrent average removal rates of NH₄⁺-N and NO₃^--N were 73% and 78%, respectively, under a flood/rest/flood time of 4 h/2h/4h in "tide" mode accompanied by one recirculation. The lowest NO₃^--N concentration among all anodes was observed when the electrode gap was 45 cm. Similarly, the 45 cm anode exhibited selective enrichment of Variovorax and Azoarcus. Correction analysis showed that the high relative abundance of Azoarcus was crucial in enhancing NO₃^--N removal, and the internal resistance significantly decreased as the relative abundance of Acidovorax increased. These results suggest that NO₃^--N removal and bioelectricity generation can be promoted in a TFCW-MFC with limited carbon by improving the culture conditions for specific genera.

Enhanced isophthalonitrile complexation-reduction removal using a novel anaerobic fluidized bed reactor in a bioelectrochemical system based on electric field activation (AFBR-EFA)

On account of the recalcitrant and highly toxicity of organonitrile substrates, traditional processes are limited by HCN poisoning thus inefficient. This article proposed a novel anaerobic fluidized bed reactor with electric field activation (AFBR-EFA) which had a 260-day continuous operation. The operation aims to explore the practicability of the enhanced reduction of isophthalonitrile (IPN), with emphasis on the optimum operation parameters and synergistic effect between electric field and anaerobic processes. The results showed that relatively higher voltage (1.0 V < V < 1.6 V) had a positive impact on reduction enhancement. High removal could be obtained at high initial concentration, low methanol dosage and short HRT which indicated that tolerance to shock loading was significantly enhanced in AFBR-EFA. Furthermore, EFA visibly motivated the enrichment of electrochemically active bacteria and various autotrophic IPN degradation-related species. The significantly efficient performance makes the potential for full-scale application of the AFBR-EFA markedly improved, particularly for treating hard-biodegraded contaminants.

Contamination and natural attenuation characteristics of petroleum hydrocarbons in a fractured karst aquifer, North China

A rare super-large fractured karst aquifer located in Zibo city, Shandong Province of Northern China was polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons from a petrochemical company. Over the last 30 years, it has been the focus of several remediation efforts. In this study, the contamination and natural attenuation characteristics of the petroleum hydrocarbons were elucidated using hydrogeochemical indicators (DO, DOC, Cl^-, HCO₃^-, pH, NO₃^-, and SO₄^2-), petroleum hydrocarbons elements and environmental isotopes (δ¹⁵N_NO3, δ¹⁸O_NO3, δ¹³C_DIC, and δ¹³C_DOC). With the aid of GIS, statistical analyses, as well as first-order decay model and electron-acceptor-limited kinetic model, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the petroleum hydrocarbons were modeled. Results showed a positive natural attenuation trend over the last 3 decades where intrinsic biodegradation mechanism was found to be the most important factor driving the degradation of hydrocarbons in the aquifer system. The hydrogeochemical association between the indicators and petroleum hydrocarbons provided the evidences of biodegradation and also served as markers, highlighting the occurrence of anaerobic respiration without methanogenic activities within the heterogenous karst media. Furthermore, the mean natural attenuation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons was calculated to be 3.76 × 10^-3/day whereby the current highest petroleum hydrocarbons concentration (361.13 μg/L) is estimated to be degraded completely in 6 years under the present hydrogeological and environmental conditions.

Elucidating the negative effect of denitrification on aromatic humic substance formation during sludge aerobic fermentation

Humic substance (HS), as an aromatic compound, is the core product of aerobic fermentation. Denitrification-dependent degradation of aromatic compounds have been repeatedly observed in environment. However, few studies have elucidated the relationship between denitrification and aromatic HS during sludge aerobic fermentation. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of enhanced denitrification on aromatic HS formation. On the 24th day of sludge aerobic fermentation, five tests (CK, Run1, Run2, Run3 and Run4) were executed, and nitrate concentrations were adjusted to 480 ± 20, 500 ± 20, 1000 ± 20, 1500 ± 20 and 2000 ± 20 mg/kg with potassium nitrate, respectively. Analytical results demonstrated that nitrate addition increased denitrifying genes abundance and enhanced denitrification, which further reduced aromatic HS formation (p < 0.05). Especially in Run3, the concentrations of HS and humic acid on the 52nd day dramatically decreased by 12.9 % and 34.2 % in comparison with those on the 31st day. High-throughput sequencing revealed that enhanced denitrification effectively stimulated the metabolism of denitrifying microorganisms with aromatic-degrading capability. Co-occurring network analysis indicated that some keystone taxa of denitrification aromatic-degrading microorganisms involved in the conversion of nitrate to nitrite were the most crucial for enhancing denitrification and reducing aromatic HS formation.

Interactions of PAH-degradation and nitrate-/sulfate-reducing assemblages in anaerobic sediment microbial community

Nitrate and sulfate are electron acceptors (EAs) for biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in anaerobic sediments. The efficiency of PAHs biodegradation depends on the strength of the interactions between PAH-degradation and EA-reduction assemblages. However, these interactions are less studied. In this study, microbial response and PAH degradation efficiencies in river sediment were investigated using nitrate and sulfate stimulation. Results showed that the functional assemblages (PAH-degraders, nitrate- and sulfate- reducers) were low connectivity in the microbial network without EA adding. Nitrate input rapidly (<1 day) raised the nitrate reduction intensity. And the PAH-degraders and nitrate reducers established significant and direct correlations under nitrate stimulation, seen from the 13 connectors (nodes) in the microbial network. In contrast, sulfate reducers slowly increased in abundance (>20 days) and were connected to PAH-degraders through indirect connection under sulfate stimulation. The null model suggested that nitrate led to a higher level of directional selection, which implied that nitrate was a more favorable EA to trigger the deterministic succession. As a result, PAHs degradation was faster with nitrate stimulation (t_1/2 = 68.3 d) than with sulfate stimulation (t_1/2 = 164.6 d). These mechanistic understandings can serve as the guidelines for EA selection in bioremediation.

The impact of calcium peroxide on groundwater bacterial diversity during naphthalene removal by permeable reactive barrier (PRB)

Oxygen-releasing compounds (ORCs) have recently gained much attention in contaminated groundwater remediation. We investigated the impact of calcium peroxide nanoparticles on the groundwater indigenous bacteria in a bioremediation process by permeable reactive barrier (PRB). Three sand-packed columns were applied, including (1) control column (fresh groundwater), (2) natural remediation column (contaminated groundwater), and (3) biostimulation column (contaminated groundwater amended with CaO₂). Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria constituted the main phyla among the identified isolates. According to the results of next-generation sequencing, Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum (81% relative abundance) in the natural remediation condition. But, it was declined to 38.1% in the biostimulation column. Meanwhile, the abundance of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were increased to 25.9% and 15.4%, respectively, by exposing the groundwater microbial structure to CaO₂ nanoparticles. Furthermore, orders Chlamydiales, Nitrospirales, and Oceanospirillales existing in the control column were detected in the presence of naphthalene. Shannon index was 4.32 for the control column samples, while it was reduced to 2.73 and 2.00 in the natural and biostimulation columns, respectively. Therefore, the present study provides a considerable insight into the impact of ORCs on the groundwater microbial community during the bioremediation process.

Photocatalytic membrane combined with biodegradation for toluene oxidation

Photocatalytic membrane coupled to biodegradation offers potential for degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in photocatalytic membrane biofilm reactor. An intimately coupled photocatalysis and biodegradation reactor was operated in continuous operation for 500 days to treat simulated waste gas containing toluene. Toluene removal efficiency obtained 99%, with the elimination capacity of 550 g m^-3·h^-1. Membrane photocatalysis coupled to biodegradation was created to improve toluene removal from 11 to 20%. The dominant genera were Lysinibacillus, Hydrogenophaga, Pseudomonas at 30 d, Rudaea, Dongia, Litorilinea at 230 d xyl, Tod, Tcb, Bed, Tmo, Tbu, Tou, Dmp, Cat were functional genes of toluene metabolism, as shown by16S rDNA and metagenomic sequencing. Photocatalysis destroyed part of the toluene into biodegradable intermediates that were immediately mineralized by microorganisms in biofilm, some toluene was directly degraded by toluene degrading bacterial community into carbon dioxide and water. The novel hybrid photocatalytic membrane biofilm reactor is a cost-effective and robust alternative to VOCs treatment.

Nitrogen removal from wastewater via simultaneous nitrification and denitrification using a biological folded non-aerated filter

A conventional biological filter has been shown to be a viable method for removing nitrogenous compounds from wastewater, but it still has many disadvantages. In this study, a biological folded non-aerated filter (BFNAF) was designed, and its feasibility for nitrogen-loaded wastewater treatment has been confirmed. Effects of the HRT and the COD/N ratio on the performance of BFNAF were investigated. Through response surface method, when the COD/N ratio and the HRT were 5.39 and 10.83 h, removal efficiencies of NH₄⁺, COD and TN reached maximum values of 88.62 ± 0.81%, 76.12 ± 0.57%, and 50.48 ± 1.02%, respectively. In addition, it was found that several denitrifying bacteria, such as Azoarcus, Arcobacter, Flavobacterium, along with many ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, co-existed in the community of the biofilm. All the results showed that the BFNAF could realize the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process effectively.

Catalysis of hydrogen peroxide with Cu layered double hydrotalcite for the degradation of ethylbenzene

A high catalytic system using Cu layered double hydrotalcite (Cu(II)-Mg(II)-Fe(III)LDHs) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) was developed for the degradation of ethylbenzene. It was identified that the degradation efficiency of ethylbenzene (0.08 mmol L^-1) and TOC removal were 96.1% and 39.7% respectively in the presence of 0.1 g L^-1 Cu(II)-Mg(II)-Fe(III)LDHs with (Cu²⁺ + Mg²⁺)/Fe³⁺ molar ratio of 5.0 and 0.16 mmol L^-1 H₂O₂ in 6.0 h. Based on ESR and XPS data, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the predominant free radical specials generated from the catalytic decomposition of H₂O₂ for the degradation of ethylbenzene. The redox of Cu(II)/Cu(III) on the layered Cu(II)-Mg(II)-Fe(III)LDHs surface active sites accounted for the formation of •OH radicals and the cycle of Cu(II) in the Cu(II)-Mg(II)-Fe(III)LDHs/H₂O₂ system were proposed.

Emulsified polycolloid substrate biobarrier for benzene and petroleum-hydrocarbon plume containment and migration control - A field-scale study

The objective of this field-scale study was to assess the effectiveness of applying an emulsified polycolloid substrate (EPS; containing cane molasses, soybean oil, and surfactants) biobarrier in the control and remediation of a petroleum-hydrocarbon plume in natural waters. An abandoned petrochemical manufacturing facility site was contaminated by benzene and other petroleum products due to a leakage from a storage tank. Because benzene is a petroleum hydrocarbon with a high migration ability, it was used as the target compound in the field-scale study. Batch partition and sorption experiment results indicated that the EPS to water partition coefficient for benzene was 232 mg/mg at 25 °C. This suggests that benzene had a higher sorption affinity to EPS, which decreased the benzene concentrations in groundwater. The EPS solution was pressure-injected into three remediation wells (RWs; 150 L EPS in 800 L groundwater). Groundwater samples were collected from an upgradient background well, two downgradient monitor wells (MWs), and the three RWs for analyses. EPS injection increased total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations (up to 786 mg/L) in groundwater, which also resulted in the formation of anaerobic conditions. An abrupt drop in benzene concentration (from 6.9 to below 0.04 mg/L) was observed after EPS supplementation in the RWs due to both sorption and biodegradation mechanisms. Results show that the EPS supplement increased total viable bacteria and enhanced bioremediation efficiency, which accounted for the observed decrease in benzene concentration. The first-order decay rate in RW1 increased from 0.003 to 0.023 d^-1 after EPS application. Injection of EPS resulted in significant growth of indigenous bacteria, and 23 petroleum-hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial species were detected, which enhanced the in situ benzene biodegradation efficiency. Results demonstrate that the EPS biobarrier can effectively contain a petroleum-hydrocarbon plume and prevent its migration to downgradient areas, which reduces the immediate risk presented to downgradient receptors.

Enhanced denitrification by nano ɑ-Fe2O3 induced self-assembled hybrid biofilm on particle electrodes of three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors

Three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors (3D-BERs) represent a novel technology for wastewater denitrification. Formation of mature electroactive biofilm on particle electrodes is crucial to realize successful denitrification in 3D-BERs. However, long start-up time and low electroactivity of the biofilm formed on particle electrodes limit the further application of 3D-BERs in wastewater treatment. In this work, self-assembled hybrid biofilms (SAHB) was cultivated on granular activate carbon particle electrodes of the 3D-BER by assembling nano ɑ-Fe₂O₃ into the biofilm. ɑ-Fe₂O₃ was selected due to its high affinity to bacterial outer-membrane cytochromes, an important mediator for microbial electron transfer. SAHB formed on particle electrodes were characterized and the denitrification performance of 3D-BERs was also investigated. Results indicate that nano ɑ-Fe₂O₃ plays positive roles in the start-up of 3D-BER, which captures more microbes into SAHB and constructs thick biofilm on particle electrodes. Special microorganisms with denitrification function related with genera of Hydrogenophaga and Opitutus are distinctively enriched in SAHB. Nano ɑ-Fe₂O₃ induced SAHB exhibit superior denitrification performance compared to natural biofilm. The average denitrification rate increases from 0.62 mg total nitrogen/L/h for natural biofilm to 1.73 mg total nitrogen/L/h for SAHB, mainly ascribed to accelerated nitrites reduction. Our work provides new technical solution to enhance nitrates removal in 3D-BERs and brings deep insights into application of bio-electrochemical system in wastewater treatment.

Systems biology approach to elucidation of contaminant biodegradation in complex samples – integration of high-resolution analytical and molecular tools

We present here a data-driven systems biology framework for the rational design of biotechnological solutions for contaminated environments with the aim of understanding the interactions and mechanisms underpinning the role of microbial communities in the biodegradation of contaminated soils.
