Natural organic matter-cations complexation and its impact on water treatment: A critical review

Compatibility of vivianite-crystallization pathway of phosphorus recovery with anaerobic digestion systems of thermally hydrolyzed sludge

Phosphorus in sewage is mostly enriched in activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants, making excess sludge an appropriate material for phosphorus recovery. The potential of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O) crystallization-based phosphorus recovery during the anaerobic digestion of thermally hydrolyzed sludge was discussed with influences of organic compounds on the formation of vivianite crystals being investigated in detail. Bovine serum albumin, humic acids and alginate, as model compounds of proteins, humic acids and polysaccharides, all inhibited vivianite crystallization, with the influence of humic acids being the most significant. A sludge retention time of >12 d for effective degradation of organic compounds and a certain degree of FeII excess are suggested to decrease the organics resulting inhibition. The results demonstrate the compatibility of vivianite-crystallization pathway of phosphorus recovery with anaerobic sludge digesters, and reveal the complexity of vivianite formation in the sludge with further research warranted to minimize the inhibitory influences.

Autocatalytic degradation of Cu-EDTA in the Calcite/PMS system: Singlet oxygen and Cu(III)

The simultaneous removal of heavy metal complexes (HMCs) and heavy metal ions presents a significant challenge in treating wastewater. To address this, we propose a Calcite/Peroxymonosulfate (Calcite/PMS) system aimed at simultaneously decomplexing Cu-EDTA and removing Cu ions. Calcite/PMS system could achieve 99.5 % Cu-EDTA decomplexation and 61.9 % Cu ions removal within 60 min under initial conditions of Cu-EDTA (10 mg/L), Calcite (3 g/L), and PMS (2 mM). Singlet oxygen (1O2) emerged as the predominant reactive species responsible for Cu-EDTA decomplexation, which selectively targeted the N-C bonds in the Cu-EDTA structure to produce intermediates with lower biotoxicity than EDTA. Interestingly, solid phase Cu(III) (≡Cu(III)) promoted the generation of superoxide radicals (O2•-) with a contribution of up to 72.8 %. Subsequently, nascent ≡Cu(III) and O2•- accelerated the degradation of intermediates. Besides, coexisting organic substances inhibited Cu-EDTA decomplexation, whereas inorganic ions had a weak impact. After five cycles of use, the Calcite/PMS system retained 99.3 % efficiency in decomplexing Cu-EDTA. This investigation provides valuable insights into using calcite to remove HMCs and enhances our comprehension of the decomplexation intermediates accelerating HMCs degradation.

Complex impact of metals on the fate of disinfection by-products in drinking water pipelines: A systematic review

Metals in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) play an important role on the fate of disinfection by-products (DBPs). They can increase the formation of DBPs through several mechanisms, such as enhancing the proportion of reactive halogen species (RHS), catalysing the reaction between natural organic matter (NOM) and RHS through complexation, or by increasing the conversion of NOM into DBP precursors. This review comprehensively summarizes these complex processes, focusing on the most important metals (copper, iron, manganese) in DWDS and their impact on various DBPs. It organizes the dispersed 'metals-DBPs' experimental results into an easily accessible content structure and presents their underlying common or unique mechanisms. Furthermore, the practically valuable application directions of these research findings were analysed, including the toxicity changes of DBPs in DWDS under the influence of metals and the potential enhancement of generalization in DBP model research by the introduction of metals. Overall, this review revealed that the metal environment within DWDS is a crucial factor influencing DBP levels in tap water.

Complexation with Metal Ions Affects Chlorination Reactivity of Dissolved Organic Matter: Structural Reactomics of Emerging Disinfection Byproducts

Metal ions are liable to form metal-dissolved organic matter [dissolved organic matter (DOM)] complexes, changing the chemistry and chlorine reactivity of DOM. Herein, the impacts of iron and zinc ions (Fe3+ and Zn2+) on the formation of unknown chlorinated disinfection byproducts (Cl-DBPs) were investigated in a chlorination system. Fe3+ preferentially complexed with hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups, while Zn2+ favored the amine functional groups in DOM. As a consequence, electron-rich reaction centers were created by the C-O-metal bonding bridge, which facilitated the electrophilic attack of α-C in metal-DOM complexes. Size-reactivity continuum networks were constructed in the chlorination system, revealing that highly aromatic small molecules were generated during the oxidation and decarbonization of metal-DOM complexes. Molecular transformation related to C-R (R represents complex sites) loss was promoted via metal complexation, including decarboxylation and deamination. Consequently, complexation with Fe3+ and Zn2+ promoted hydroxylation by the C-O-metal bonding bridge, thereby increasing the abundances of unknown polychlorinated Cl-DBPs by 9.6 and 14.2%, respectively. The study provides new insights into the regulation of DOM chemistry and chlorine reactivity by metal ions in chlorination systems, emphasizing that metals increase the potential health risks of drinking water and more scientific control standards for metals are needed.

Integrating HYDRUS-2D and Bayesian Networks for simulating long-term sludge land application: Uncovering heavy metal mobility and pollution risk in the soil-groundwater environment

The release of sludge-derived heavy metals (HMs) to soil and their subsequent migration into groundwater poses a significant challenge for safe and low-carbon sludge land application. This study developed a predictive framework to simulate 60-year sludge land application, evaluating the risk of HMs pollution in the soil-groundwater environment and assessing the influence of soil and water properties. HYDRUS-2D simulations revealed that highly mobile Cu, Ni, and Zn penetrated a 10 m soil layer over a 60-year period, contributing to groundwater pollution. In contrast, Cr was easily sequestered within the topsoil layer after 5-years continuous operation. The non-equilibrium parameter α could serve as an indicator for assessing their potential risk. Furthermore, the limited soil adsorption sites for Pb (f = 0.02772) led to short-term (1-year) groundwater pollution at a 0.5 m-depth. Bayesian Networks model outcomes indicated that humic-like organics crucially influenced HMs transformation, enhancing the desorption of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, while inhibiting the desorption for Cr. Additionally, electrical conductivity promoted the release of most HMs, in contrast to the Mn mineralogy in soil. This study bridges the gap between the macro-level HMs migration trends and the micro-level adsorption-desorption characteristics, providing guidance for the safe land application of sewage sludge. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: This study introduces a framework integrating HYDRUS-2D simulations with Bayesian Networks to assess the risks of groundwater pollution by heavy metals (HMs) over a 60-year sludge application. Sludge-derived Cu, Ni, and Zn are found to penetrate soil up to 10 m and exceed safety limits, with the non-equilibrium parameter α serving as an indicator for pollution risk. The importance of nutrients from sludge-amended soil for the transformation of HMs in the subsurface environment highlights the need for enhanced sludge management, specifically through more detailed regulation of nutrient composition. These findings contribute to developing precise strategies for the long-term sludge land application.

Suitability of inorganic coagulants for algae-laden water treatment: Trade-off between algae removal and cell viability, aggregate properties and coagulant residue

Inorganic coagulants could effectively precipitate algae cells but might increase the potential risks of cell damage and coagulant residue. This study was conducted to critically investigate the suitability of polyaluminum (PAC), FeCl3 and TiCl4 for algae-laden water treatment in terms of the trade-off between algal substance removal, cell viability, and coagulant residue. The results showed that an appropriate increase in coagulant dosage contributed to better coagulation performance but severe cell damage and a higher risk of intracellular organic matter (IOM) release. TiCl4 was the most destructive, resulting in 60.85% of the algal cells presenting membrane damage after coagulation. Intense hydrolysis reaction of Ti salts was favorable for the formation of larger and more elongated, dendritic structured flocs than Al and Fe coagulants. TiCl4 exhibited the lowest residue level and remained in the effluents mainly in colloidal form. The study also identified charge neutralization, chemisorption, enmeshment, and complexation as the dominant mechanisms for algae water coagulation by metal coagulants. Overall, this study provides the trade-off analyses between maximizing algae substance removal and minimizing potential damage to cell integrity and is practically valuable to develop the most suitable and feasible technique for algae-laden water treatment.

Transformation of dissolved organic matter during groundwater arsenite removal using air cathode iron electrocoagulation

Dissolve organic matters (DOM) usually showed negative effect on the removal of inorganic arsenic (As) in groundwater by electrochemical approaches, yet which parts of sub-component within DOM played the role was lack of evidence. Herein, we investigated the effects of land-source humic-like acid (HA) on groundwater As(III) removal using air cathode iron electrocoagulation, based on the parallel factor analysis of three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix and statistical methods. Our results showed that the land-source HA contained five kinds of components and all components presented significantly negative correlations with the removal of both As(III) and As(V). However, the high aromatic fulvic-like acid and low aromatic humic-like acid components of land-source HA presented the opposite correlations with the concentration of As(III) during the reaction. The high aromaticity fulvic-like components of land-source HA (Sigma-Aldrich HA, SAHA) produced during the reaction facilitated the oxidation of As(III) due to its high electron transfer capacities and good solubility in wide pH range, but the low aromaticity humic-like ones worked against the oxidation of As(III). Our findings offered the novel insights for the flexible activities of DOM in electron Fenton system.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter in rivers impacted by acid mine drainage: Components and complexation with metals

Dissolved organic matter (DOM), a ubiquitous and active ingredient, is extensively involved in the transformation and migration of environmental pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. However, its chemical composition in acid mine drainage (AMD)-impacted rivers remains poorly characterized, hindering our understanding of its role in the biogeochemistry of key elements in contaminated fluvial environments. Here, we investigated the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and spectroscopic and molecular characteristics of DOM in a headwater river contaminated with polymetallic mine-derived AMD in southern China. Terrestrial humic-like (C1) and typically groundwater-supplied aromatic protein/tyrosine-like (C2) substances which were partially from AMD, were identified as the predominant fluorescent components in the river water. Notably, tryptophan-like (C3) substances originating from tailings pond spills were only occasionally detected in the river. Although DOM biogeochemical transformations and degradation occurred in the lateral soil-water riparian interface and longitudinal in-stream transport processes, the molecular compositions identified by FT-ICR MS showed a core set of molecular formulae in the lignin/saturated compound/tannin region of the van Krevelen diagram of the water samples across the rivers. The complexation of DOM with typical metals in AMD was investigated using fluorescence quenching experiments. The results showed that the highest binding ability of Fe(III) to C2 followed by C1, with both detected in the experimental water samples. Mg(II) and Ca(II) strengthened the binding of DOM-Fe(III) when the ferric/DOM ratio was low, while Cu(II) weakened the binding of DOM-Fe(III) due to competition. Ca(II) inhibited the binding of Fe(III) to C1 but promoted the binding of the complex to C2 when both Cu(II) and Mg(II) were present. Since DOM-Fe(III) complexation was associated with the cotransport of AMD-derived metals/metalloids in diverse aqueous environments with multiple co-existing ions (typically Ca(II) input for remediation), our study on the composition of DOM and its complexation with metals can contribute to managing and remediating AMD-impacted rivers.

Changes in coal waste DOM chemodiversity and Fe/Al oxides during weathering drive the fraction conversion of heavy metals

The long-term accumulation of coal waste on the surface during natural weathering leads to the inevitable migration of heavy metals contained in the coal waste, which increases the likelihood of environmental contamination and health risks. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Fe/Al oxides play crucial roles in the transformation and bioavailability of heavy metals. Thus, we analyzed the Fe/Al oxide content and DOM molecular composition in coal waste with different degrees of weathering and explored the influence of DOM chemical diversity and Fe/Al oxides on the potential mobility of heavy metals. Results showed that weathering-driven decrease in Fe oxides (Fed, FeO, and Fep decreased from 82.4, 37.5, and 3.6 mg∙L-1 to 41.3, 24.7, and 2.3 mg∙L-1, respectively) led to decreases in the reducible fractions of V and Cr. The potential environmental risks of more toxic metals of Cd and As, also increased as a result of the residual fractions decreased to 32.6 % and 41.3 %, respectively. Weathering caused an increase in oxygen-to‑carbon ratio, double-bond equivalent, modified aromaticity index, nominal oxidation state of carbon, and molecular diversity and a decrease in (m/z)w and (H/C)w, suggesting that the DOM of highly weathered coal waste possessed high unsaturation, aromatic structures, hydrophilicity, and strong oxidative characteristics. Additionally, although VMF and CrMF showed significant negative correlations with O/C ratio, polyphenolic, carbohydrates, and condensed aromatics, pH remained a key environmental factor determining the potential environmental risks of V and Cr by changing the residual fractions. The mobilities of Cd and As were significantly negatively correlated with those of Fe/Al oxides, particularly Fed, FeO, Fep, and Alp. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the impact of weathering on the geochemical cycling of different coal waste components, providing priority options for environmental risk prevention and control in coal mining areas.

Applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in drinking water treatment processes: Possibilities

In water treatment processes (WTPs), artificial intelligence (AI) based techniques, particularly machine learning (ML) models have been increasingly applied in decision-making activities, process control and optimization, and cost management. At least 91 peer-reviewed articles published since 1997 reported the application of AI techniques to coagulation/flocculation (41), membrane filtration (21), disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation (13), adsorption (16) and other operational management in WTPs. In this paper, these publications were reviewed with the goal of assessing the development and applications of AI techniques in WTPs and determining their limitations and areas for improvement. The applications of the AI techniques have improved the predictive capabilities of coagulant dosages, membrane flux, rejection and fouling, disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation and pollutants' removal for the WTPs. The deep learning (DL) technology showed excellent extraction capabilities for features and data mining ability, which can develop an image recognition-based DL framework to establish the relationship among the shapes of flocs and dosages of coagulant. Further, the hybrid techniques (e.g., combination of regression and AI; physical/kinetics and AI) have shown better predictive performances. The future research directions to achieve better control for WTPs through improving these techniques were also emphasized.

Removal of strontium by nanofiltration: Role of complexation and speciation of strontium with organic matter

Strontium (Sr) removal from water is required because excessive naturally occurring Sr exposure is hazardous to human health. Climate and seasonal changes cause water quality variations, in particular quality and quantity of organic matter (OM) and pH, and such variations affect Sr removal by nanofiltration (NF). The mechanisms for such variations are not clear and thus OM complexation and speciation require attention. Sr removal by NF was investigated with emphasis on the role of OM (type and concentration) and pH (2-12) on possible removal mechanisms, specifically size and/or charge exclusion as well as solute-solute interactions. The filtration results show that the addition of various OM (10 types) and an increase of OM concentration (2-100 mgC.L-1) increased Sr removal by 10-15%. The Sr-OM interaction was enhanced with increasing OM concentration, implying enhanced size exclusion via Sr-OM interaction as the main mechanism. Such interactions were quantified by asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (FFFF) coupled with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Both extremely low and high pH increased Sr removal due to the enhanced charge exclusion and Sr-OM interactions. This work elucidated and verified the mechanism of OM and pH on Sr removal by NF membranes.

Molecular insights into the bonding mechanisms between selenium and dissolved organic matter

Natural organic matter (NOM) plays a critical role in the mobilization and bioavailability of metals and metalloids in the aquatic environment. Selenium (Se), an environmental contaminant of aquatic systems, has drawn increasing attention over the years. While Se is a vital micronutrient to human beings, animals and plants, excess Se intake may pose serious long-term risks. However, the interaction between Se and dissolved organic matter (DOM) remains relatively unexplored, especially the reaction mechanisms and interactions of specific NOM components of certain molecular weight and the corresponding functional group change. Herein, we report an investigation on the interactions between Se and DOM by focusing on the mass distribution profile change of operationally defined molecular weight fractions of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA). The results showed that across all molecular weights studied, HA fractions were more prone to enhanced aggregation upon introduction of Se into the system. For FA, the presence of Se species results in aggregation, dissociation, and redox reactions with the first two being the major mechanisms. Total organic carbon analysis (TOC), UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis), and Orbitrap MS data showed that [10, 30] kDa MW fraction had the largest aromatic decrease (CRAM-like, lignin-like and tannin-like) upon addition of SeO2 via dissociation as the dominant mechanism. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed that Se based bridging or chelation of functional groups from individual DOM components through hydrogen bonding in the form of SeO⋯H and possibly Se⋯H and/or attractive electrostatic interactions lead to aggregated DOM1⋯Se⋯DOM2. It was concluded from two-dimensional correlation analyses of excitation emission matrix (EEM) and FT-IR that the preferred Se-binding follows lipid ➔ peptide ➔ tannin ➔ aromatic functionalities. These results provide new understanding of Se interactions with various NOM components in aquatic environments and provide insight for Se assessing health risk and/or treatment of Se contaminated water.

Facilitated transport of toluene and naphthalene with humic acid in high- and low-permeability systems: Role of ionic strength and cationic type

The occurrence of colloids on pollutants transport in groundwater has attracted more attention. However, the research on the regulation mechanism of colloids on combined pollutants transport in heterogeneous aquifers is limited. In this study, a series of tank experiments were conducted to systematically investigate the effects of ionic strength, and cation type on humic acid (HA) facilitated transport of toluene (TOL), and naphthalene (NAP) in high- and low-permeability systems. The results showed that HA facilitated pollutants transport in low Na+ solution. In Ca2+ solution, the presence of HA hindered pollutants transport, and the inhibition increased with the increase of ionic strength. Both in Na+ solution and low Ca2+ solution, the influence of heterogeneous structure on pollutant transport played a dominant role, and TOL and NAP had a greater transport potential in the high permeability zone (HPZ) due to the preferential flow. Whereas, deposition of HA aggregates, and electrostatic attractive interaction had negative effects on transport than groundwater flow in high Ca2+ solution. Pollutants were prone to accumulate at the bottom of the HPZ, and the top of the low permeability zone (LPZ). These new findings provide insights into the mechanism of colloids influence on the pollutants transport in heterogenous aquifer.

Effects of Ca2+ and Mg2+ on Cu binding in hydrophilic and hydrophobic dissolved organic matter fractions extracted from agricultural soil

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has significant effects on soil copper (Cu) bioavailability. However, little is known about Cu interactions and major cation binding toward hydrophilic and hydrophobic DOM components extracted from soil solutions. In this study, we investigated the influence of major cations (Ca2+/Mg2+) on Cu complexing characteristics on different hydrophilic and hydrophobic DOM fractions using absorbance spectroscopy at different Cu2+ concentrations in the absence/presence of Ca2+/Mg2+. Different compositional hydrophobic and hydrophilic DOM fraction proportions occurred at three agricultural soil sites, with the hydrophobic acid (HOA) fraction accounting for the highest proportion. The addition of Cu2+ generated distinct ultraviolet (UV) bands/peaks (processed by differential linear and differential logarithmic transformation) of three hydrophilic DOM fractions, whereas Cu2+ induced less and weak specific peaks in the differential spectra and differential logarithmic of the HOA fractions, indicating hydrophilic DOM fractions tend to have a higher density of Cu2+ complexation sites. In the presence of either Ca2+/Mg2+, increased depression caused by Cu2+ binding on different DOM fractions was observed with increasing 10, 100, and 1000 μM Ca2+/Mg2+ levels, with more significant variations in peaks/banks for hydrophilic base (HIB) and HOA fractions, and less for hydrophilic acid (HIA) and hydrophilic neutral (HIN) fractions. In our study, the spectral parameters ΔS225-275 and ΔS275-325 were successfully used to quantify Cu amounts bonded to HIA and HIB, respectively. They exhibited strong linear relationships with correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.96 for HIA and 0.87 for HIB, respectively. Furthermore, Mg2+ exhibited stronger competition with Cu for HIA and HIB binding sites when compared with Ca2+.

Aging of nanosized titanium dioxide modulates the effects of dietary copper exposure on Daphnia magna - an assessment over two generations

Nanosized titanium dioxide (nTiO2) is widely used in products, warranting its discharge from various sources into surface water bodies. However, nTiO2 co-occurs in surface waters with other contaminants, such as metals. Studies with nTiO2 and metals have indicated that the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) can mitigate their toxicity to aquatic organisms. In addition, "aging" of nTiO2 can affect toxicity. However, it is a research challenge, particularly when addressing sublethal responses from dietary exposure over multiple generations. We, therefore exposed the alga Desmodesmus subspicatus to nTiO2 (at concentrations of 0.0, 0.6 and 3.0 mg nTiO2/L) in nutrient medium aged for 0 or 3 days with copper (Cu) at concentrations of 0 and 116 µg Cu/L and with NOM at concentrations equivalent to 0 and 8 mg total organic carbon (TOC) per litre. Subsequently, the exposed alga was fed to Daphnia magna for 23 days over two generations and survival, reproduction and body length were assessed as endpoints of toxicity. In parallel, Cu accumulation and depuration from D. magna were measured. The results indicate that the reproduction of D. magna was the most sensitive parameter in this study, being reduced by 30% (at both parental (F0) and filial (F1) generations) and 50% (at F0 but not F1) due to the dietary Cu exposure in combination with nTiO2 for 0 and 3 days aging, respectively. There was no relationship between the effects observed on reproduction and Cu body burden in D. magna. Moreover, D. magna from the F1 generation showed an adaptive response to Cu in the treatment with 3.0 mg nTiO2/L aged for 3 days, potentially due to epigenetic inheritance. Unexpectedly, the presence of NOM hardly changed the observed effects, pointing towards the function of algal exopolymeric substances or intracellular organic matter, rendering the NOM irrelevant. Ultimately, the results indicate that the transferability of the impacts observed during the F0 to the responses in the F1 generation is challenging due to opposite effect directions. Additional mechanistic studies are needed to unravel this inconsistency in the responses between generations and to support the development of reliable effect models.

Assessment of ecotoxicological effects of Fojo coal mine waste elutriate in aquatic species (Douro Coalfield, North Portugal)

Introduction: The exploitation of anthracite A in the Pejão mining complex (Douro Coalfield, North Portugal) resulted in the formation of several coal waste piles without proper environmental control. In 2017, a new pedological zonation emerged in the Fojo area, after the ignition and self-burning of some of the coal waste piles, namely: unburned coal waste (UW); burned coal waste, and a cover layer (BW and CL, respectively); uphill soil (US); mixed burned coal waste (MBW); downhill soil (DS). This study aimed to evaluate the toxic effects of 25 soil elutriates from different pedological materials. Methods: Allivibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition assay, Lemna minor growth inhibition assay, and Daphnia magna acute assay were used to assess the toxicity effects. Additionally, total chlorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) content and catalase (CAT) activity were also evaluated in L. minor. Results and Discussion: The results obtained from each endpoint demonstrated the extremely heterogeneous nature of soil properties, and the species showed different sensibilities to soil elutriates, however, in general, the species showed the same sensitivity trend (A. fischeri > L. minor > D. magna). The potentially toxic elements (PTE) present in the soil elutriates (e.g., Al, Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn) affected significantly the species understudy. All elutriates revealed toxicity for A. fischeri, while US1 and UW5 were the most toxic for L. minor (growth inhibition and significant alterations in CAT activity) and D. magna (100% mortality). This study highlights the importance of studying soil aqueous phase toxicity since the mobilization and percolation of bioavailable PTE can cause environmental impacts on aquatic ecosystems and biota.

Comprehensive understanding of the aging and biodegradation of polystyrene-based plastics

The extensive utilization and inadequate handling of plastics have resulted in severe environmental ramifications. In particular, plastics composed solely of a carbon-carbon (C-C) backbone exhibit limited degradation due to the absence of hydrolyzable functional groups. Plastics with enduring longevity in the natural environment are susceptible to environmental factors and their intrinsic properties, subsequently undergoing a series of aging processes that culminate in biodegradation. This article focuses on polystyrene (PS), which constitutes 20% of total plastic waste, as a case study. Initially, the application of PS in life and the impacts it poses are introduced. Following that, the key factors influencing the aging of PS are discussed, primarily encompassing its properties (e.g., surface characteristics, additives) and environmental factors (e.g., water matrices, biofilms). Lastly, an overview of microbial degradation of PS is provided, including potential microorganisms involved in PS degradation (bacteria, fungi, algae, and insects), four processes of microbial degradation (colonization, bio-fragmentation, assimilation, and mineralization), and potential mechanisms of microbial degradation. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted influences affecting the aging and biodegradation mechanisms of PS, thereby contributing valuable insights for the future management of plastic pollution.

Characterization and quantification of silver complexes with dissolved organic matter by size exclusion chromatography coupled to ICP-MS

The fate and behavior of silver in aquatic systems is intricately determined by its interactions with dissolved organic matter (DOM). In this study, we have introduced a method for identification and quantification of silver-DOM complexes using size exclusion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SEC-ICP-MS). Our findings revealed that silver(I) was weakly bound to Suwannee River humic acid, fulvic acid, and natural organic matter (SRHA, SRFA, and SRNOM) in various media, resulting in facile dissociation during chromatographic separation. Suitable chromatographic conditions were determined for the elution of Ag-DOM complexes, involving the use of 0.5 mM ammonium acetate (pH 7) as the mobile phase and silver-aged column (pre-absorbing 0.1-0.7 μg silver(I)). SEC-UV and SEC-ICP-MS chromatograms revealed that Ag-binding fractions of DOM were dominated by its aromatic compounds. The quantification of silver-DOM complexes was achieved by SEC-ICP-MS combination with on-line isotope dilution. Silver at concentrations below 20 µg L-1 was mainly present in the form of organic complexes in low salinity water. These measurements aligned well with the results obtained using the equilibrium dialysis method. Species analyses of Ag-DOM complexes provide a deeper understanding of the reactivity, transport, and fate of silver in aquatic environments. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Ionic silver is highly toxic to aquatic organisms such as fish and zooplankton. The complexation of silver with binding sites within DOM significantly influences its speciation, mobility, and toxicity. Despite the complex and unknown structure of silver-DOM complexes, this study provided a SEC-ICP-MS method to identify and quantify these complexes in a range of media. By uncovering the formation of silver-DOM complexes across diverse media, this work enhances the comprehension of silver transformation processes and associated environmental risks in aquatic environments.

Al and Mn speciation changes during the pre-oxidation with potassium permanganate and coagulation removing natural organic matter and its membrane fouling behavior

In this study, we systematically explore coagulation behavior, ultrafiltration membrane fouling behavior and the mechanism involved in during the process of pre-oxidation of potassium permanganate and coagulation of aluminum chloride at different condition to treat model pollutants (humic acid, HA) and natural water. The KMnO4 pre-oxidation significantly enhances flocs formation, and for HA artificial water the flocs size increases from 82 to 122 μm at pH 5.5, from 63 to 185 μm at pH 7.0 and from 0 to 75 μm at pH 8.5, respectively, as for natural water it increases from 72 to 139 μm. The enhanced coagulation at pH 5.5 is attributed to the increased polymeric Al speciation after pre-oxidation along with the generated Mn2+ damaging the electric double layer structure. And for pH 8.5 it is mainly caused by the in-situ MnO2 as combination nuclei during pre-oxidation. Besides, for pH 7.0, the combined effect of in-situ MnO2 and the increased polymeric Al speciation both contribute to improvement of the coagulation. What's more, the enhanced Al coagulation by pre-oxidation of KMnO4 also helps alleviate the membrane fouling for both HA artificial water and natural water, and a much rougher surface with larger flocs forms after KMnO4-aided Al coagulation filtration. This study provides an alternative perspective on the mechanism of pre-oxidation coagulation process.

Microbe interactions drive the formation of floating iron films in circumneutral wetlands

Floating iron (Fe) films are widely found in wetlands that can form oxic-anoxic boundaries under circumneutral conditions. These films play a crucial role in the redox transformations and bioavailability of nutrients and trace metals. Current studies mainly focus on chemical oxidation during Fe film formation under circumneutral conditions. The functional microorganisms and associated microbial processes involved in Fe film formation have yet to be investigated in detail. Here, we investigated the microbial communities and involved microbial processes for the formation of floating Fe films in wetlands. Ferrihydrite was the dominant Fe(III) phase in films, accompanied by moderate levels of carbon and silicon. The Fe species and microbial analysis indicated that Fe films contain mixed-valent Fe and can form biotically. Microbial community analysis showed that the dominant genera in these Fe films were Fe-oxidizing and reducing bacteria and methanotrophs, including Leptothrix, Ferriphasclus, Gallionella, Geobacter and Methylococcales. Leptothrix, Ferriphasclus and Gallionella, as classical Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB), can oxidize Fe(II) with limited oxygen and form special structures that are consistent with Fe film morphology. Geobacter can provide a source of Fe(II) for FeOB growth, and Methylococcales can perform methane oxidation to provide energy for Fe cycling. The high ratios of Gallionella- and Geobacter-related microorganisms and carbon fixation genes proved the contribution of potential of Fe cycling and autotrophic microbial communities to the formation of Fe films. The diversity of microbial community suggested that Fe(II) oxidation could trigger carbon fixation, while Fe(III) reduction accelerated Fe and carbon cycling through anaerobic respiration and autotrophic chemosynthesis. These results highlight the contribution of these multiple microbial processes to Fe and carbon cycling during the formation of floating Fe films in wetlands. However, further studies are required to fully elucidate the interaction of functional microorganisms involved in floating film formation and their biogeochemical role in wetlands.

Self-cleaning foulant attachment on near-infrared responsive photocatalytic membrane for continuous dynamic removing antibiotics in sewage effluent environment

Bifunctional photocatalytic nanofiltration (PNF) membrane has become a reliable frontier technique for removing refractory organic micropollutants. However, the active mitigated fouling mechanism from the microscopic perspective during its long-term operation of purifying real micro-polluted water is rarely studied. Herein, with an integrated use of QSense Explorer and confocal laser scanning microscope techniques, self-cleaning foulant attachment on an activated and customized near-infrared responsive polymeric PNF (termed as nPNF) membrane with good service performance for continuous dynamic removing antibiotics in sewage effluent environment was firstly elucidated. Time-dependent changes in dissipation oscillation frequency, sensed mass and the visualized foulant spatial distribution all indicated that there were only sporadic foulant attachment, an extremely low fouling layer thickness and irreversible fouling rate on/of the activated nPNF membrane top surface, thereby endowing it with excellent self-cleaning characteristic. This is probably because the reactive oxygen species (mainly •O2- and •OH) concurrently destroys the integrity of fouling layer and its internal adhesion structure, transforming part of the irreversible fouling on nPNF membrane surface into reversible one that is easy to wash off. These new horizons provided useful insight on the fate of selected antibiotics in the to-be-removed stage and self-cleaning foulant attachment of PNF membrane.

Effect of microplastics on the adherence of coexisting background organic contaminants to natural organic matter in water

Microplastics (MPs) may interact with background organic substances (including natural organic matter and organic pollutants) after entering the aquatic environment and affect their original binding. Thus, the interaction of MPs with background organic substances (i.e., humic acid (HA), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and hydroxy PCBs) were elucidated. According to the results, PCB and hydroxy PCB displayed a strong propensity to adhere to HAs in the absence of MPs. However, the PCBs and hydroxy PCBs that were initially bound to HAs shifted from HAs to MPs in the presence of MPs. Further analysis demonstrated that this transfer was dominated by van der Waals interactions, with hydrogen bond interactions as an additional driving force. Upon the interaction, large MPs-HA-PCB/ hydroxy PCB aggregates with MPs as the core and HAs as the outermost layer were formed. Significant changes in the properties of background organic matter, including the distribution of PCB/hydroxy PCB around HA, diffusion coefficient, and hydrogen bond networks in the HA-PCB/ hydroxy PCB domains, occurred during the MP-HA-PCB/hydroxy PCB interaction. These results provide molecular-level evidence that the intrusion of MPs changes the binding preference of background organic pollutants and can lead to a redistribution of background organic pollutants.

New insights into the influence of pre-oxidation on membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water considering inorganic-organic complexation and oxidant reduction byproducts

Even though pre-oxidation is usually considered as a promising method to alleviate membrane fouling, information on performance and inner mechanisms of pre-oxidation-influenced membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water is still limited. This study is the first work in which oxidant reduction byproducts and interaction between different pollutants were particularly considered to address these problems. Herein, nanofiltration experiments with different pre-oxidized synthesis brackish water containing inorganic salts and organic pollutants were conducted. Membrane flux results showed that both NaClO and K2FeO4 aggravated membrane fouling, but 0.45 mg/mg TOC KMnO4 mitigated it when simulation results of NICA-Donnan model showed that the complexation between calcium ions and humic acid (HA) was weakened. However, membrane fouling was enhanced by higher dosage of KMnO4. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer using attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum showed that the aggravated membrane fouling was mainly caused by the generation of amorphous manganese oxide, which was oxidant reduction byproduct and had strong capacity for adsorption of HA. Particle size distribution and zeta potential variation indicated that the accumulation of HA could enhance the crystallization process and then the electrostatic attraction between membrane and bulk crystallization was induced. According to SEM images and fitting results of Hermia's models, the already-formed bulk crystallization by 1.90 mg/mg TOC KMnO4 could deposit on membranes more easily, followed by the formation of a denser fouling layer. Overall, the present study provided new insights into the design of reliable pre-oxidation strategies for alleviating membrane fouling during nanofiltration of brackish water.

Fabrication of affinity-based drug delivery systems based on electrospun chitosan sulfate/poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous mats

Benign electrospinning of chitosan in aqueous medium is an open challenge mainly due to its insolubility in neutral pH and inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Here, we developed a simple and widely-used methodology to improve the chitosan electrospinnability through the sulfation of chitosan and its further mixing with poly(vinyl alcohol) for the first time. The FTIR, 1H NMR and elemental analyses showed the successful sulfation of chitosan. Furthermore, the viscosity and electrical conductivity measurements revealed the high solubility of chitosan sulfate (CS) in aqueous media. In the next step, a uniform electrospun nanofibrous mat of CS/PVA was fabricated with a fiber diameter ranging from 90 to 340 nm. The crosslinked CS/PVA (50/50) nanofibrous mat as the optimum sample showed a swelling ratio of 290 ± 4 % and a high Young's modulus of 3.75 ± 0.10 GPa. Finally, malachite green (MG) as a cationic drug model was loaded into different samples of chitosan film, CS film, and CS/PVA (50/50) nanofibrous mat and its release behavior was studied. The results of these analyses revealed that the CS/PVA (50/50) nanofibrous mat can successfully load higher contents of the MG and also release it in a sustained manner.

In-depth study of the removal of Mn(II) by Fe(VI) treatment and the profound influence of NOM on floc formation and properties

The presence of manganese(II) in drinking water sources poses a significant treatment difficulty for water utilities, thus necessitating the development of effective removal strategies. Treatment by Fe(VI), a combined oxidant and coagulant, has been identified as a potential green solution; however, its effectiveness is hampered by natural organic matter (NOM), and this underlying mechanism is not fully understood. Here, we investigated the inhibitory effect of three different types of NOM, representing terrestrial, aquatic, and microbial origins, on Mn(II) removal and floc growth during Fe(VI) coagulation. Results revealed that Fe(VI) coagulation effectively removes Mn(II), but NOM could inhibit its effectiveness by competing in oxidation reactions, forming NOM-Fe complexes, and altering floc aggregation. Humic acid was found to exhibit the strongest inhibition due to its unsaturated heterocyclic species that strongly bond to flocs and react with Fe(VI). For the first time, this study has presented a comprehensive elucidation of the atomic-level structure of Fe(VI) hydrolysis products by employing Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy (EXAFS). Results demonstrated that NOM strengthened single-corner and double-corner coordination between FeO6 octahedrons that were consumed by Mn(II), resulting in an increased contribution of γ-FeOOH in the core-shell structure (γ-FeOOH shell and γ-F2O3 core), thereby inhibiting coagulation effects. Furthermore, NOM impeded the formation of stable manganite, resulting in more low-valence Mn(III) being incorporated in the form of an unstable intermediate. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between Fe coagulants, heavy metal pollution, and NOM in water treatment and offer insight into the limitations of Fe(VI) in practical applications.

Tuning nanofiltration membrane performance: OH-MoS2 nanosheet engineering and divalent cation influence on fouling and organic removal

Natural organic matter (NOM) present in surface water causes severe organic fouling of nanofiltration (NF) membranes employed for the production of potable water. Calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) are alkaline earth metals present in natural surface water and severely exacerbate organic fouling owing to their ability to cause charge neutralization, complexation, and bridging of NOM and the membrane surface. Hence, it is of practical significance to engineer membranes with properties suitable for addressing organic fouling in the presence of these cations. This study employed OH-functionalized molybdenum disulphide (OH-MoS2) nanosheets as nanofillers via the interfacial polymerization reaction to engineer NF membranes for enhanced removal of NOM and fouling mitigation performance. At an optimized concentration of 0.010 wt.% of OH-MoS2 nanosheet, the membrane was endowed with higher hydrophilicity, negative charge and rougher membrane morphology which enhanced the pure water permeance by 46.33% from 11.2 to 16.39 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 while bridging the trade-off between permeance and salt selectivity. The fouling performance was evaluated using humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA), which represent the hydrophobic and hydrophilic components of NOM in the presence of 0, 0.5, and 1 mM Ca2+ and Mg2+, respectively, and the performance was benchmarked with control and commercial membranes. The modified membrane exhibited normalized fluxes of 95.09% and 93.26% for HA and SA, respectively, at the end of the 6 h filtration experiments, compared to the control membrane at 89.71% and 74.25%, respectively. This study also revealed that Ca2+ has a more detrimental effect than Mg2+ on organic fouling and NOM removal. The engineered membrane outperformed the commercial and the pristine membranes during fouling tests in the presence of 1 mM Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the feed solution. In summary, this study has shown that incorporating OH-MoS2 nanosheets into membranes is a promising strategy for producing potable water from alternative water sources with high salt and NOM contents.

Multi-scale modeling of natural organic matter-heavy metal cations interactions: Aggregation and stabilization mechanisms

Interaction between natural organic matters (NOM) and heavy metal cations in aqueous environment are of great significance for maintaining stability of organic carbon and restraining transport of heavy metal contaminants in (bio)geochemical processes. We systematically explore the aggregation process and complexation between NOM and heavy metal cations (Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, Eu³⁺) under different pH condition by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, umbrella sampling method, and quantum chemistry calculations. The character of molecular structures NOM-heavy metal complexes and association are quantified. In acidic pH condition, aggregation proceeds via H-bonding and π-π interactions between NOM fragments. In neutral condition, Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Eu³⁺ can form inner-sphere complexes with the surface carboxylic groups and therefore reduce intermolecular charge repulsion, eventually leading to NOM aggregation, and it shows that even without direct binding, the outer-sphere adsorbed Zn²⁺ can also result in the formation of NOM assemble through H-bonding. Consequently, these heavy metals are capable of promoting NOM aggregation regardless of the complexing ways. Complexing free energy calculations characterized the dynamic processes of cations binding to the carboxylic groups of NOM fragment and the related energy landscape. This study provides quantitative insights for understanding the environmental processes of heavy metals and cycle of C in aquatic ecosystem, and contributes to developing environment-friendly strategies for controlling heavy metal contaminants.

Post-consumption waterpipe tobacco waste as an unrecognized source of toxic metal(loid)s leachates into aquatic environments

Waterpipe is a common form of tobacco smoking, and recently, its use has been increasing globally. Therefore, concern arises regarding the large quantity of post-consumption waterpipe tobacco waste produced and released into the environment and which can contain high levels of dangerous pollutants such as toxic meta(loid)s. This study reports the concentrations of meta(loid)s in waste from fruit-flavoured and traditional tobacco smoking as well as the release rate of these pollutants from waterpipe tobacco waste into three types of water. These include distilled water, tap water, and seawater and contact times ranging from 15 min to 70 days. The mean concentration levels of Ʃmetal(loid)s in waste samples of Al-mahmoud, Al-Fakher, Mazaya, Al-Ayan brands and traditional tobacco brands were 212 ± 92.8, 198 ± 94.4, 197 ± 75.7, 214 ± 85.8 and 40.6 ± 16.1 μg/g, respectively. The concentration levels of Ʃmetal(loid)s in fruit-flavoured tobacco samples were significantly higher than for traditional tobacco samples (p < 0.05). It was found that waterpipe tobacco wastes leached toxic metal(loid)s into different water samples with similar trends. In addition distribution coefficients showed that most metal(loid)s are highly likely to enter the liquid phase. The concentration levels of these pollutants (except Ni and As) in deionized water and tap water exceeded the surface fresh water standards for sustaining aquatic life during long contact time (up to 70 days). In seawater, concentration levels of Cu and Zn exceeded the recommended standards for maintaining aquatic life in the sea. Therefore, due to the possibility of contamination by soluble metal(loid)s through disposal of waterpipe tobacco waste in wastewater, there is concern that these toxic chemicals might enter the human food chain. Appropriate regulatory measures for disposal of waterpipe tobacco waste are necessary to prevent environmental pollution due to discarded wastes into aquatic ecosystems.

Molecular size-dependent compositions and lead (II) binding behaviors of two origins of organic fertilizers-derived dissolved organic matter

The application of organic fertilizers caused large amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) entering the soil environment and influencing the behaviors and fates of heavy metals. Here, we investigated the molecular weight-dependent (high molecular weight [HMW], 1 kDa-0.7 µm; low molecular weight [LMW], <1 kDa) compositions and lead (Pb) binding behaviors of DOM derived from sheep manure-based (SMOF) and shrimp peptide-based organic fertilizers (SPOF) using chromophoric and fluorescent spectroscopy, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS). Results showed that SMOF released more DOM with higher aromaticity and hydrophobicity, containing more fluvic-like components, carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs) and lignin phenolic compounds compared to SPOF-DOM with more microbially-transformed heteroatom-containing compounds (CHON, CHONS and CHOS). Furthermore, there was more aromatic compounds with ample carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in HMW-DOM but abundant protein-like components and heteroatom-containing compounds (CHONS and CHOS) in LMW-DOM. SMOF-DOM exhibited more obvious MW-dependent heterogeneity in molecular components compared to SPOF-DOM with higher molecular diversity. Moreover, 2D-COS indicated phenol and carboxyl groups in SMOF-DOM and polysaccharides in SPOF-DOM exhibited superior binding affinities for Pb. Pb binding to HMW-DOM derived from SMOF first occurred in the phenolic groups in fulvic-like substances, while polysaccharides in LMW-DOM first participated in the binding of Pb. In contrast, irrespective of MWs, polysaccharides and humic-like substances with aromatic (CC) groups in SPOF-DOM displayed a faster response to Pb. Furthermore, the polysaccharides which preferentially participated in the binding of Pb to SPOF-DOM and SMOF-derived LMW-DOM may pose a higher risk of Pb in the environment. These results were helpful to understand the effects of sources and size-dependent compositions of DOM on the associated risks of heavy metals in the environments.

Surface engineered functional biomaterials for hazardous pollutants removal from aqueous environment

The issue of water contamination by heavy metal ions as highly persistent pollutants with harmful influence primarily on biological systems, even in trace levels, has become a great environmental concern globally. Therefore, there is a need for the use of highly sensitive techniques or preconcentration methods for the removal of heavy metal ions at trace levels. Thus, this research investigates a novel approach by examining the possibility of using pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel layered material for the simultaneous preconcentration of seven heavy metal ions; Cd(II), Co(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Mn(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution and three river water samples. The quantification of the heavy metals was performed by the means of FAAS technique. The characterization of biomaterial was performed by SEM/EDS, FTIR analysis and pHpzc determination before and after the remediation process. The reusability study, as well as the influence of interfering ions (Ca, K, Mg, Na and Zn) were evaluated. The conditions of preconcentration by the column method included the optimization of solution pH (5); flow rate (1.5 mL/min), a dose of biosorbent (200 mg), type of the eluent (1 mol/L HNO₃), sample volume (100 mL) and sorbent fraction (<0.25 mm). The biosorbent capacity ranged from 4.45 to 57.70 μmol/g for the investigated heavy metals. The practical relevance of this study is further extended by novel data regarding adsorbent cost analysis (17.49 $/mol). The Punica granatum sorbent represents a highly effective and economical biosorbent for the preconcentration of heavy metal ions for possible application in industrial sectors.

FT-ICR-MS combined with fluorescent spectroscopy reveals the driving mechanism of the spatial variation in molecular composition of DOM in 22 plateau lakes

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the largest carbon pool and directly affects the biogeochemistry in lakes. In the current study, fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) combined with fluorescent spectroscopy was used to assess the molecular composition and driving mechanism of DOM in 22 plateau lakes in Mongolia Plateau Lakes Region (MLR), Qinghai Plateau Lakes Region (QLR) and Tibet Plateau Lakes Region (TLR) of China. The limnic dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content ranged from 3.93 to 280.8 mg L^-1 and the values in MLR and TLR were significantly higher than that in QLR. The content of lignin was the highest in each lake and showed a gradually decreasing trend from MLR to TLR. Random forest model and structural equation model implied that altitude played an important role in lignin degradation while the contents of total nitrogen (TN) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) have a great influence on the increase of DOM Shannon index. Our results also suggested that the inspissation of DOC and the promoted endogenous DOM production caused by the inspissation of nutrient resulted in a positive relationship between limnic DOC content and limnic factors such as salinity, alkalinity and nutrient concentration. From MLR to QLR and TLR, the molecular weight and the number of double bonds gradually decreased but the humification index (HIX) also decreased. In addition, from the MLR to the TLR, the proportion of lignin gradually decreased, while the proportion of lipid gradually increased. Both above results suggested that photodegradation was dominated in lakes of TLR, while microbial degradation was dominated in lakes of MLR.

Simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals from aqueous phase via adsorptive strategy: A critical review

The coexistence of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals is regarded as a serious threat to aquatic environments. Adsorbents have been widely applied to the simultaneous removal of pharmaceuticals and metals from aqueous phase. Through a comprehensive review, behaviors that promote, inhibit, or have no effect on simultaneous adsorption of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals were found to depend on the system of contaminants and adsorbents and their environmental conditions, such as: characteristics of adsorbent and pollutant, temperature, pH, inorganic ions, and natural organic matter. Bridging and competition effects are the main reasons for promoting and inhibiting adsorption in coexisting systems, respectively. The promotion is more significant in neutral or alkaline conditions. After simultaneous adsorption, a solvent elution approach was most commonly used for regeneration of saturated adsorbents. To conclude, this work could help to sort out the theoretical knowledge in this field, and may provide new insights into the prevention and control of pharmaceuticals and heavy metals coexisting in wastewater.

Structure and composition of natural ferrihydrite nano-colloids in anoxic groundwater

Fe-rich mobile colloids play vital yet poorly understood roles in the biogeochemical cycling of Fe in groundwater by influencing organic matter (OM) preservation and fluxes of Fe, OM, and other essential (micro-)nutrients. Yet, few studies have provided molecular detail on the structures and compositions of Fe-rich mobile colloids and factors controlling their persistence in natural groundwater. Here, we provide comprehensive new information on the sizes, molecular structures, and compositions of Fe-rich mobile colloids that accounted for up to 72% of aqueous Fe in anoxic groundwater from a redox-active floodplain. The mobile colloids are multi-phase assemblages consisting of Si-coated ferrihydrite nanoparticles and Fe(II)-OM complexes. Ferrihydrite nanoparticles persisted under both oxic and anoxic conditions, which we attribute to passivation by Si and OM. These findings suggest that mobile Fe-rich colloids generated in floodplains can persist during transport through redox-variable soils and could be discharged to surface waters. These results shed new light on their potential to transport Fe, OM, and nutrients across terrestrial-aquatic interfaces.

Effective recovery of rare earth from (bio)leaching solution through precipitation of rare earth-citrate complex

Bioleaching is considered an alternative to traditional rare earth extraction technology. However, since rare earth elements exist as complexes in bioleaching lixivium, they cannot be directly precipitated by normal precipitants, which restricts their further development. This structurally stable complex is also a common challenge in various types of industrial wastewater treatment. In this work, a new method called a three-step precipitation process is first proposed to efficiently recover rare earth-citrate (RE-Cit) complexes from (bio)leaching lixivium. It consists of coordinate bond activation (carboxylation by pH adjustment), structure transformation (Ca²⁺ addition) and carbonate precipitation (soluble CO₃^2- addition). The optimization conditions are determined to adjust the lixivium pH to around 2.0, then add calcium carbonate until the n(Ca²⁺): n(Cit^3-) is more than 1.4:1 and lastly add sodium carbonate until n(CO₃^2-): n(RE³⁺) is more than 4:1. The results of precipitation experiments using imitated lixivium show that the rare earth yield is more than 96% and the impurity aluminum yield is less than 20%. Subsequently, pilot tests (1000 L) using real lixivium were successfully conducted. The precipitation mechanism is briefly discussed and proposed by thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and UV spectroscopy. This technology is promising in the industrial application of rare earth (bio)hydrometallurgy and wastewater treatment due to its advantages of high efficiency, low cost, environmental friendliness and simple operation.

The Adsorption Behaviors and Mechanisms of Humic Substances by Thermally Oxidized Graphitic Carbon Nitride

Thermal oxidation is efficient for enhancing the photocatalysis performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), while its effect on adsorption performance has not been fully studied, which is crucial to the application of g-C₃N₄ as adsorbents and photocatalysts. In this study, thermal oxidation was used to prepare sheet-like g-C₃N₄ (TCN), and its application for adsorption of humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) was evaluated. The results showed that thermal oxidation clearly affected the properties of TCN. After thermal oxidation, the adsorption performance of TCN was enhanced significantly, and the adsorption amount of HA increased from 63.23 (the bulk g-C₃N₄) to 145.35 mg/g [TCN prepared at 600 °C (TCN-600)]. Based on fitting results using the Sips model, the maximum adsorption amounts of TCN-600 for HA and FA were 327.88 and 213.58 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption for HA and FA was markedly affected by pH, alkaline, and alkaline earth metals due to electrostatic interactions. The major adsorption mechanisms included electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, along with a special pH-dependent conformation (for HA). These findings implied that TCN prepared from environmental-friendly thermal oxidation showed promising prospects for humic substances (HSs) adsorption in natural water and wastewater.

Insight into the effect of natural organic matter on the photooxidation of arsenite induced by colloidal ferric hydroxides in water

Surface complexation of arsenite (As(III)) on colloidal ferric hydroxide (CFH) plays an important role not only in the adsorptive immobilization of As(III) but also in the subsequent oxidation of As(III) to arsenate (As(V)) through light-induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) in water at near-neutral pH. However, the effects of natural organic matter (NOM), especially humic substances (HSs) and low molecular weight carboxylic acids (CAs), on the photochemistry of the CFH-As(III) system have not been sufficiently understood. In this work, the inhibition of photooxidation of As(III) in terms of the observed apparent rate constant (k_obs) by six HSs (below 16 mg L^-1) and seven CAs (below 2.5 mM) has been observed in water containing 66 μM Fe(III) and 5 μM As(III) at pH 7 under simulated solar irradiation consisting of UVA (λ_max 365 nm) and UVB (λ_max 313 nm) lights. Total inhibition factors (T) have been determined from the combined effect of light-screening factor (S) and competitive complexation factor (C), wherein both S and C varied with NOM concentration. S was obtained by determining the absorbance of NOM, and C was obtained by fitting modified Langmuir or Freundlich models to the amount of As(III) desorbed from CFH upon the addition of NOM. Statistical analysis between the experimental T_exp and the calculated one according to T_cal = S × C showed that the Freundlich model (RMSE for HS 0.1609 and for CA 0.1771) was better than the Langmuir model and was statistically robust (Q_LOO²= 0.691 > 0.5). This work provided an estimation method for the effects of NOM on As(III) photooxidation in the presence of CFH as well as a deeper understanding of the transformation of arsenic species in sunlit water.

Nanoscale Hydrophobicity and Electrochemical Mapping Provides Insights into Facet Dependent Silver Nanoparticle Dissolution

Metal or metallic nanoparticle dissolution influences particle stability, reactivity, potential fate, and transport. This work investigated the dissolution behavior of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in three different shapes (nanocube, nanorod, and octahedron). The hydrophobicity and electrochemical activity at the local surfaces of Ag NPs were both examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) coupled with scanning electrochemical microscopy (AFM-SECM). The surface electrochemical activity of Ag NPs more significantly affected the dissolution than the local surface hydrophobicity did. Octahedron Ag NPs with dominant surface exposed facets of {111} dissolved faster than the other two kinds of Ag NPs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the {100} facet elicited greater affinities toward H₂O than the {111} facet. Thus, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) or PVP coating on the {100} facet is critical for stabilizing and prevent the {100} facet from dissolution. Finally, COMSOL simulations demonstrated consistent shape dependent dissolution as we observed experimentally.

Synergism of Fe and Al salts for the coagulation of dissolved organic matter: Structural developments of Fe/Al-organic matter associations

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is distributed ubiquitously in water bodies. Ferric ions can flocculate DOM to form stable coprecipitates; however, Al(III) may alter the structures and stability of Fe-DOM coprecipitates. This study aimed to examine the coprecipitation of Fe, Al, and DOM as well as structural developments of Fe-DOM coprecipitates in relation to changes in Fe/Al ratios and pHs. The results showed that the derived Fe/Al/DOM-coprecipitates could be classified into three categories: (1) at pH 3.0 and 4.5, the corner-sharing FeO₆ octahedra associated with Fe-C bonds with Fe/(Fe + Al) ratios ≥0.5; (2) the Fe-C bonds along with single Fe octahedra having Fe/(Fe + Al) ratios of 0.25; (3) at pH 6.0, the ferrihydrite-like Fe domains associated with Fe-C bonds with Fe/(Fe + Al) ratios ≥0.5. At pH 3.0, the Fe and C stability of the coprecipitates increased with increasing Al proportions; nonetheless, pure Al-DOM coprecipitates were unstable even if they exhibited the maximum ability for DOM removal. The associations of Al-DOM complexes and/or DOM-adsorbed Al domains with external surfaces of Fe domain or Fe-DOM coprecipitates may stabilize DOM, leading to lower C solubilization at pH 4.5. Although the preferential formation of Fe/Al hydroxides decreased Fe/Al solubilization at pH 6.0, adsorption instead of coprecipitation of DOM with Fe/Al hydroxides may decrease C stabilization in the coprecipitates. Aluminum cations inhibit DOM releases from Fe/Al/DOM-coprecipitates, promoting the treatment and reuse efficiencies of wastewater and resolving water shortages. This study demonstrates that Al and solution pH greatly affect the structural changes of Fe-DOM coprecipitates and indirectly control the dynamics of Fe, Al, and C concentrations in water.

Drinking water treatment and associated toxic byproducts: Concurrence and urgence

Reclaimed water is highly required for environmental sustainability and to meet sustainable development goals (SDGs). Chemical processes are frequently associated with highly hazardous and toxic by-products, like nitrosamines, trihalomethanes, haloaldehydes, haloketones, and haloacetic acids. In this context, we aim to summarize the formation of various commonly produced disinfection by-products (DBPs) during wastewater treatment and their treatment approaches. Owing to DBPs formation, we discussed permissible limits, concentrations in various water systems reported globally, and their consequences on humans. While most reviews focus on DBPs detection methods, this review discusses factors affecting DBPs formation and critically reviews various remediation approaches, such as adsorption, reverse osmosis, nano/micro-filtration, UV treatment, ozonation, and advanced oxidation process. However, research in the detection of hazardous DBPs and their removal is quite at an early and initial stage, and therefore, numerous advancements are required prior to scale-up at commercial level. DBPs abatement in wastewater treatment approach should be considered. This review provides the baseline for optimizing DBPs formation and advancements in the remediation process, efficiently reducing their production and providing safe, clean drinking water. Future studies should focus on a more efficient and rigorous understanding of DBPs properties and degradation of hazardous pollutants using low-cost techniques in wastewater treatment.

An eco-sustainable approach towards heavy metals remediation by mangroves from the coastal environment: A critical review

Mangroves provide various ecosystem services, carbon sequestration, biodiversity depository, and livelihoods. They are most abundant in marine and coastal ecosystems and are threatened by toxic contaminants like heavy metals released from various anthropogenic activities. However, they have significant potential to survive in salt-driven environments and accumulate various pollutants. The adverse effects of heavy metals have been extensively studied and recognized as toxic to mangrove species. This study sheds light on the dynamics of heavy metal levels, their absorption, accumulation and transport in the soil environment in a mangrove ecosystem. The article also focuses on the potential of mangrove species to remove heavy metals from marine and coastal environments. This review concludes that mangroves are potential candidates to clean up contaminated water, soil, and sediments through their phytoremediation ability. The accumulation of toxic heavy metals by mangroves is mainly through roots with limited upward translocation. Therefore, promoting the maintenance of biodiversity and stability in the coastal environment is recommended as an environmentally friendly and potentially cost-effective approach.

New outlook on hazardous pollutants in the wastewater environment: Occurrence, risk assessment and elimination by electrodeionization technologies

Over the decades, water contamination has increased substantially and has become a severe global issue. Degradation of natural resources is taking place at an alarming rate as a result of the use of chemicals like dyes, heavy metals, fertilizers, pesticides, and many more, necessitating the development of long-term pollution remediation methods/technologies. As a new development in the field of environmental engineering, electrodeionization incorporates both traditional ion exchange and electrodialysis. This communication provides an overview of hazardous contaminants such as dyes, heavy metals, fertilizers, and pesticides, as well as their converted forms, which are present in water. It highlights the risks of water pollutants to public health and the environment. Various electrochemical methods with a focus on electrodeionization for the treatment of wastewater and removal of hazardous contaminants are outlined in this review. Additionally, this review discusses the challenges and the future outlook for the development in this field of research.

Influence of humic acid on microbial induced carbonate precipitation for organic soil improvement

Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is one of the most commonly researched topics on biocementation, which achieves cementation of soil particles by carbonate from urea hydrolysis catalyzed by microbial urease. Although most MICP studies are limited to stabilizing sandy soils, more researchers are now turning their interest to other weak soils, particularly organic soils. To stabilize organic soils, the influence of humic substances should be investigated since it has been reported to inhibit urease activity and disrupt the formation of calcium carbonate. This study investigates the effect of humic acid (HA), one fraction of humic substances, on MICP. For this purpose, the effects of HA content on CaCO₃ precipitation using three strains and on CaCO₃ morphology were examined. The results showed that native species in organic soils were less adversely affected by HA addition than the exogenous one. Another interesting finding is that bacteria seem to have strategies to cope with harsh conditions with HA. Observation of CaCO₃ morphology revealed that the crystallization process was hindered by HA to some extent, producing lots of fine amorphous precipitates and large aggregated CaCO₃. Overall, this study could provide an insightful understanding of possible obstacles when using MICP to stabilize organic soils.

Bentonite binding with mercury(II) ion through promotion of reactive oxygen species derived from manure-based dissolved organic matter

This study reports the mercury binding by bentonite clay influenced by cattle manure-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM). The DOM (as total organic carbon; TOC) was reacted with bentonite at 5.2 pH to monitor the subsequent uptake of Hg²⁺ for 5 days. The binding kinetics of Hg²⁺ to the resulting composite was studied (metal = 350 µM/L, pH 5.2). Bentonite-DOM bound much more Hg²⁺ than original bentonite and accredited to the establishment of further binding sites. On the other hand, the presence of DOM was found to decrease the Hg²⁺ binding on the clay surface, specifically, the percent decrease of metal with increasing DOM concentration. Post to binding of DOM with bentonite resulted in increased particle size diameter (~ 33.37- ~ 87.67 nm) by inducing the mineral modification of the pore size distribution, thus increasing the binding sites. The XPS and FTIR results confirm the pronounced physico-chemical features of bentonite-DOM more than that of bentonite. Hydroxyl and oxygen vacancies on the surface were found actively involved in Hg²⁺ uptake by bentonite-DOM composite. Furthermore, DOM increased the content of Hg²⁺ binding by ~ 10% (pseudo-second-order q_e = 90.9-100.0) through boosting up Fe³⁺ reduction with the DOM. The quenching experiment revealed that more oxygen functionalities were generated in bentonite-DOM, where hydroxyl was found to be dominant specie for Hg²⁺ binding. The findings of this study can be used as theoretical reference for mineral metal interaction under inhibitory or facilitating role of DOM, risk assessment, management, and mobilization/immobilization of mercury in organic matter-containing environment.

Occurrence, distribution, and migration of antimony in the Zijiang River around a superlarge antimony deposit zone

Under the environmental changes associated with mine tributaries entering mainstream rivers, differences in the distributions and migration behaviors of metal(loid)s can be found, but the behavior of antimony (Sb) is still poorly understood in this regard. We analyzed the occurrence, distribution, migration, and influencing factors of the Sb concentration in the water body of the Zijiang River (ZR) around a superlarge Sb deposit zone. The total Sb concentrations were 1.45-15.66 μg/L, 3.16-133.63 mg/kg, and 0.83-41.82 μg/L in the ZR surface waters, sediments, and pore waters, respectively; Sb(V) was the predominant form of Sb found in the surface waters. Mining and smelting were the main sources of Sb in the ZR. Spatially, the Sb concentration showed a decreasing trend from the tributaries to the ZR mainstream. In the ZR, the surface-water Sb concentration showed an increasing trend from the upstream to the downstream, while in the sediments and pore waters, the midstream Sb concentrations were higher than the upstream and downstream concentrations; this finding was related to the sediment retention and accumulation behaviors of reservoirs and dams resulting in the secondary release of Sb in sediments. Sb tended to be bound to the solid phase, dominated by amorphous iron (Fe)/aluminum (Al) oxides and calcium in sediments. This study highlights that, based on current Sb migration patterns, the accumulation of sediments carried by tributaries near Sb mines in the midstream ZR and the Sb pollution caused by sediment release will be long-term, and the related environmental consequences need to be further predicted.

Stability of Ion Exchange Membranes in Electrodialysis

During electrodialysis the ion exchange membranes are affected by such factors as passage of electric current, heating, tangential flow of solution and exposure to chemical agents. It can potentially cause the degradation of ion exchange groups and of polymeric backbone, worsening the performance of the process and necessitating the replacement of the membranes. This article aims to review how the composition and the structure of ion exchange membranes change during the electrodialysis or the studies imitating it.

The role of transformation in the risks of chemically exfoliated molybdenum disulfide nanosheets to the aquatic environment

While the effects of environmental factors (e.g., coexisting organic macromolecules and solar irradiation) on the phase transformation and oxidative dissolution of chemically exfoliated molybdenum nanosheets (ceMoS₂) have been recognized, the effects of environmental processes on the subsequent biological impacts of ceMoS₂ are still poorly understood. In this study, the bioavailability and transitions in chemical speciation occurring during the aging process are demonstrated to be key factors causing ceMoS₂ to affect aquatic organisms. The lower survival rate of embryonic zebrafish with aged (i.e., sunlight-irradiated and dark-ambient-aged) ceMoS₂, compared to that with freshly prepared ceMoS₂, was due to the release of ionic aging products (mainly acidic Mo species) throughout the oxidative dissolution of ceMoS₂. The released soluble molybdenum interacted with natural organic matter (NOM) depending on their functionality, and this attenuated the toxicity caused by ceMoS₂ to different degrees. Toxicity triggered by aged ceMoS₂ under both dark and irradiated conditions was significantly reduced by Suwannee River NOM due to the formation of complexes with ionic Mo species, which was established by Mo K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The findings provide useful insights for comprehending the impacts of ceMoS₂ on aquatic organisms and guidance for the prevention measures necessary in the applications of MoS₂ nanosheets.

Photochemical transformation mechanisms of dissolved organic matters (DOM) derived from different bio-stabilization sludge

Bio-stabilization sludge contains numerous dissolved organic matter (DOM) that could enter aquatic environments by soil leaching after sludge land use, but a clear understanding of their photochemical behavior is still lacking. In this study, we systematically investigated the photoactivity and photochemical transformation of aerobic composting sludge-derived DOM (DOM_ACS) and anaerobic digestion sludge-derived DOM (DOM_ADS) by using multispectral analysis coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). The results indicated that DOM_ACS and DOM_ADS have a higher proportion of highly unsaturated and phenolic compounds (HuPh)with high DBE_wa, but the different polyphenols (Polyph) abundance of them, causing the different photoactivity between them. DOM_ACS had much higher apparent quantum yields (AQY) for triplet states of dissolved natural organic matter (³DOM*) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) but slightly lower AQY for singlet oxygen (¹O₂) than DOM_ADS under simulated sunlight conditions. As the irradiation time increased, HuPh and Polyph (associated with humic-like substances) contained in DOM_ACS (DOM_ADS) decreased by 12.0% (14.1%) and 3.0% (0.2%), respectively, with concurrent decrease in average molecular weight and aromaticity moieties, resulting in more generation of aliphatic compounds. Furthermore, based on 27 types of photochemical transformation reactions, DOM_ACS containing higher fractions of O_10-15 and N_1-3O_y class preferred dealkyl group and carboxylic acid reactions, whereas DOM_ADS composed of more N₄O_y and S₂O_y fragments preferred oxygen addition and anmine reactions. Consequently, photochemical transformations reduced the Cd (II) ion activity in the presence of DOM_ACS (DOM_ADS). This study is believed to unveil the photochemical transformation of bio-stabilization sludge-derived DOM and its impact on pollutants' fate in the aquatic environment.

Effects of UV/Fe(II)/sulfite pre-treatment on NOM-enhanced Ca2+ scaling during nanofiltration treatment: Fouling mitigation, mechanisms, and correlation analysis of membrane resistance

This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of a pre-treatment involving sulfite (S(IV)) synergistically activated by ultraviolet (UV)/Fe(II) on natural organic matter (NOM)-enhanced Ca²⁺ scaling during nanofiltration treatment. Based on the variations in the physicochemical properties and correlation analyses of irreversible resistance, the intrinsic fouling mechanisms were revealed from two aspects: bulk crystallization (interaction between NOM and inorganic ions) and surface crystallization (morphology of surface crystallization and a change in the Ca²⁺ concentration in the scaling layer). Furthermore, the degradation contribution rates of different free radicals during the UV/Fe(II)/S(IV) (UFS) treatment process were evaluated. During the reactions in the UFS, three free radicals (SO·-4, OH^·- and e- aq) were generated, and in-situ Fe(III) was formed in-situ. The carboxyl groups of the NOM were attacked by the free radicals, resulting in decreased of carboxyl concentration and density. In addition, the bond between Ca²⁺ and NOM weakened, and hydrophobic (HPO) substances were mineralized. However, the Fe(III) formed in-situ was active and electropositive, competing with Ca²⁺ for the complexation active sites on the NOM. The synergy effect of bulk crystallization and surface crystallization led to a significant decrease in the particle size of feed solution. The crystal size and roughness of membrane surface also decreased, which was conducive to reducing the membrane irreversible resistance. Correlation analysis revealed that the HPO ratio, carboxyl density and particle size (> 100 nm) ratio were effective characterization parameters for predicting irreversible resistance. This study not only provides guidance for alleviating membrane fouling caused by NOM-enhanced Ca²⁺ scaling during the nanofiltration process, but also presents the rationality of irreversible resistance during nanofiltration process and various indicators with strong linear correlation.
