Abstract
Arabinoxylan (AX) has been deemed as an antinutritional factor, but limited information has addressed the effects of dietary AX on intestinal health of fish. The present study investigated the effects of dietary AX on intestinal mucosal physical and immunological barriers of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Five isoproteic and isolipidic experimental diets (AXE, AX0, AX2.5, AX5 and AX10) were formulated to contain 0.03% arabinoxylanase as well as 0%, 2.5%, 5% and 10% AX, respectively. Each diet was randomly distributed to triplicate groups of 35 juvenile (average weight 3.14 ± 0.02 g) per tank in a rearing system maintained at 17 ± 1 °C for 9 weeks. Dietary AX supplementation regardless of inclusion levels significantly (P < 0.05) depressed the growth performance and feed utilization. The plasma endothelin-1 and d-lactic acid contents as well as diamino oxidase activity were significantly higher in fish fed diet AX10 compared to fish fed diet AX0. Dietary inclusion of 5-10% AX resulted in decreased intestinal villus height, goblet cell number and desmosome density, increased crypt depth, short and irregular microvilli, widened intercellular space; down-regulated the mRNA levels of occludin in hindgut, claudin3 and ZO-1 in foregut and midgut, but up-regulated the mRNA levels of claudin12 and claudin15 in midgut as well as claudin23 in foregut, midgut and hindgut. Furthermore, dietary 5-10% AX supplementation decreased the midgut and hindgut complement 3, complement 4 and sIgT contents as well as the midgut IgM and hindgut IL-10 contents. Conversely, the hindgut TNF-α and IL-6 contents increased with the rising dietary AX level. RT-qPCR demonstrated that the pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12β, IFN-γ, and TNF-α) and pIgR mRNA levels in midgut and hindgut were up-regulated by dietary AX inclusion of 5-10% AX. Meanwhile, the mRNA levels of p38 MAPK, IκBα, and NF-κB p65 in midgut and hindgut raised gradually with the increasing dietary AX content. The Western blot results showed that the protein expression levels of p38 MAPK and NF-κB generally increased with the rising dietary AX content. Dietary treatment with 0.03% arabinoxylanase did not affect the growth performance and intestinal health of rainbow trout (P > 0.05). In conclusion, excessive dietary AX inclusion (5-10%) increased the intestinal permeability and induced the intestinal inflammatory response via activating MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway, and ultimately damaged the intestinal barrier function of rainbow trout.

Abstract
An 8-weeks feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of different levels of dietary non-starch polysaccharide on the growth, apparent nutrient digestibility, intestinal development, and morphology of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Seven isoproteic and isolipidic experimental diets were formulated (crude protein 47.00%, crude lipid 12.50%), containing 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18% non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) (named Control, NSPs3, NSPs6, NSPs9, NSPs12, NSPs15, and NSPs18), respectively. Dietary inclusion of NSPs below 9% showed no negative impacts on fish growth and feed utilization efficiency, whereas dietary NSPs inclusion level above 9% decreased weight gain rate, specific growth rate, protein efficiency, protein deposition rate, apparent digestibility of dry matter and protein, and were accompanied by a reduction in intestinal protease, Na+/K+-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase activity and an increase in feed intake and feed coefficient. The activity of lipase was significantly decreased when dietary inclusion of 15 and 18% NSPs. Moreover, the lipid deposition rate and the apparent digestibility of lipids were significantly decreased since dietary inclusion of 9% NSPs. Dietary inclusion of NSPs above 12% significantly up-regulated intestinal GLP-2 gene’s expression, and was accompanied by significant changes in hindgut morphology, including increases in villus length and width, muscularis thickness and number of goblet cell, as well as a decrease in crypt depth. Additionally, dietary inclusion of NSPs above 3% significantly increased intestinal length index, and the viserosomatic index was significantly increased when dietary NSPs exceeded 15%. The linear regression analysis based on weight gain rate and feed coefficient showed that the appropriate dietary NSPs level of juvenile largemouth bass should not above 5.51%. In conclusion, high dietary NSPs adversely affects digestive enzyme activity and intestinal morphology, which in turn reduced the apparent digestibility of dietary nutrients and growth of juvenile largemouth bass.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the responses of non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) enzymes and protease combination on growth performance, meat quality, and nutrients digestibility of yellow-feathered broilers fed with corn-soybean meal basal diets with normal and subnormal crude protein (CP) levels. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, including six replicates of 20 birds per pen. Two basal diets were formulated with normal CP level as positive control (PC) and subnormal CP level without extra essential amino acid (AA) supplementation as negative control (NC). The basal diets were supplemented without or with NSP enzymes and protease. Broilers fed with the NC diet had lower (P < 0.05) final body weight (BW), average daily weight gain (ADG) on days 1–21, 22–56 and 1–56 and higher (P < 0.05) feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) on day 22–56 than those fed with PC diet. The broilers fed with the NC diet had higher (P < 0.05) L* and b* values in thigh muscle, crypt depth in the duodenum, and dry matter (DM) digestibility as well as lower (P < 0.05) villus height, musculature thicknesses, and villus height: crypt depth in the duodenum than those fed with the PC diet. Dietary NSP enzymes and protease combination increased (P < 0.05) the ADG and F/G of the broilers on days 1–56, and pH values in breast and thigh muscles as well as the digestibility of DM, gross energy (GE), CP and most AAs of the broilers on day 56. Compared with the PC diet, the combination of NSP enzymes and protease exhibited greater (P < 0.05) improvements in the digestibility of DM, CP, and some AAs (Asp, Ile, and Leu) in the broilers fed with the NC diet. In conclusion, reducing CP diet without essential AA supplementation impaired the growth performance and meat color of the thigh muscles of the broilers. The combination of NSP enzymes and protease effectively improved the growth performance, meat quality, and nutritional values of the broilers. In terms of the digestibility of DM, CP, and some AAs, the magnitude of response to the addition of NSP enzymes and protease was greater in the low nutritional-quality diet with a subnormal CP level.

Abstract
To evolve fish farming in an eco-efficient way, feed production must become less dependent on forage fish-based ingredients and make more use of low trophic level organisms, including microalgae, higher plants, as filter feeding organisms and other ingredients with low competition to established food value chains. Diets nearly free of fish meal and fish oil are not a novelty but are often composed of complex mixtures, containing supplements to meet the farmed animal’s nutritional requirements. Sustaining a growing aquaculture production, maintaining at the same time fish health, welfare, and profitability, and meeting strict environmental and food safety demands, is challenging and requires new technologies, great investments, and more knowledge. A benchmarking feeding trial was performed to demonstrate the main effects of four low trophic raw materials on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) growth, metabolism, skin health and fillet quality. To this end, a diet was produced to contain commercially relevant levels of fresh high quality organic FM and FO and was used as a control in the trial (FMFO). Heterotrophically produced Schizochytrium limacinum biomass was used to replace organic FO (HM diet). Spray dried cell wall disrupted biomass of the phototrophically cultured diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum replaced partly FM and FO (PM diet). Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal and tunicate (Ciona intestinalis) meal, were used to produce the diets BSFL and TM, respectively, replacing large parts of FM as compared to the FMFO. A fifth test diet was produced combining all test raw materials and removing all FM and FO (0FM0FO diet). All test ingredients were well accepted sustaining high growth rates (TGC values near 4) and feed efficiency (FCR values below 0.9) in salmon showing good gut health and normal metabolic responses. However, none of the treatments reached the growth performance of FMFO. Additional differences between test and control treatments were identified in dietary nutrient apparent digestibility, fish biometrics, blood metabolites and fillet and skin composition. Extensive raw material and dietary chemical characterisation was performed to provide insight on potential shortcomings in the novel low trophic level ingredients which can possibly be overcome combining complementary raw materials.

Abstract
With sustainable development of biotechnology, increasing attention has been placed on utilization of solid-state fermented feed (SFF). Solid-state fermented feed has been a candidate strategy to alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of feed resources, ensure food hygiene safety, promoting energy conservation, and emission reduction. In production of SFF, a variety of organic acids, enzymes, vitamins, peptides, and other unknown growth factors are produced, which could affect performance of animals. Solid-state fermented feed produced by different fermentation techniques has great instability on different physiological stages of different animals, which hinders the application and standardized production of SFF. Herein, we summarize the current advances in the role of the characteristics of SFF prepared by different manufacturing technique and its research progress in animal experiments on growth performance, gastrointestinal ecology, and immune system, so as to provide references for further acquiring a relatively perfect set of SFF production and evaluation systems.

Abstract
Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of soyabean meal replacement by maize distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in diets for pacu juveniles. Five diets were formulated with 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 g of DDGS/kg diet replacing up to total dietary soyabean meal. In trial 1, the experimental diets were fed to five groups of fish to evaluate the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC). In trial 2, four groups of fish were fed each experimental diet for 100 d to evaluate the effects of these diets on digestive enzyme activity, intestine oxidative stress and intestine morphology. The ADC of DM and energy was reduced with dietary DDGS inclusion, while the ADC of lipids was increased, and no differences were observed for the ADC of protein. Independent of dietary treatment, pH increased from anterior to the distal intestine with dietary DDGS inclusion. Digestive enzyme activities were higher on anterior than the distal intestine. Dietary DDGS decreased lipase, amylase, chymotrypsin and trypsin activities, while no differences were observed for total protease activity. Intestine glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was reduced in fish fed the DDGS diets, while catalase activity increased. Lipid peroxidation was lower in fish fed DDGS diets than the control. Intestine histomorphology improved with dietary DDGS inclusion. Overall, the negative effects of soyabean meal could be decreased by dietary replacement with maize DDGS which may have a prebiotic effect, improving intestine health.

Abstract
1. This study was conducted to assess the effects of graded levels of dietary corn resistant starch (RS) on growth performance, carcass traits, nutrient retention, digestive organ index, intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activities, and mRNA expression of certain nutrient transporters in broiler chickens.2. A total of 320, 1-d-old Arbor Acres broiler chickens were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments, with eight replicates of eight birds in each. These treatments included one corn-soybean control diet, a corn-soybean based diet containing 20% corn starch, and three diets supplemented with 4%, 8% and 12% RS by replacing corn starch with 6.67%, 13.33% and 20% of Hi-Maize 260® (identified as control, RS1, RS2, RS3 and RS4, respectively). The feeding period lasted 42 days.3. Performance parameters including feed consumption, feed conversion, body weight gain and percentage of abdominal fat at d 42 of age, nutrient retention (including dry matter, fat, total starch and nitrogen free extract), and apparent metabolisable energy was measured from d 18 to 20 and d 39 to 41 and showed negative linear responses to increasing dietary RS level (P < 0.05). Birds fed the RS3 and RS4 diets showed higher relative weight of duodenum, jejunum and ileum, as well as lower villus height and villus height/crypt depth compared to the control (P < 0.05). The activity of pancreatic trypsin of birds at d 21 and 42 of age decreased linearly in response to the increase of dietary RS level (P < 0.01). There were linear changes in up-regulated mRNA expression of SGLT-1 and down-regulated mRNA expression of GLUT-2 with increasing proportion of RS at d 21 and 42 of age (P < 0.05), respectively.4. It was concluded that feeding broilers with diets containing higher concentrations of RS impaired the development of small intestine, which resulted in lower apparent total tract retention of nutrients and poorer body weight gain, feed efficiency and carcass traits of broiler chickens.

Abstract
Defatted soybean meal has 30-35% oligo-/polymeric carbohydrates and approximately 50% proteins. Enzymatic carbohydrate monomerization enables easy separation to enrich protein content, reduces indigestibility concerns, and facilitates use of carbohydrate as fermentation feedstock. Among soybean carbohydrates, pectin and glucan are more recalcitrant to hydrolyze. To destabilize Ca2+-bridged junctures in pectin, effects of 3 chelators ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) and citric acid under 2-h 90 °C pretreatments were investigated here. Citric acid was the most effective while EDTA decreased enzymatic hydrolysis. In a 3-factor 2-level factorial study, heat (90 °C, 2 h) and citric acid (10 g/L) pretreatments and cellulase supplementation (10 FPU/g) were found to increase yields of all monosaccharides, to 86.8 ± 5.2% glucose, 98.1 ± 1.6% xylose, 87.5 ± 5.2% galactose, 83.6 ± 1.6% arabinose, and 91.4 ± 3.1% fructose + mannose. The largest percentage improvements were for arabinose (382%), mannose (113%) and glucose (51%). Achieving high monosaccharide yields greatly increases value of soybean carbohydrate as fermentation feedstock.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Developments in the production of aquacultural salmonid feeds in the last 20 years have led to extruded diets with extremely low water content and a shift from mainly marine fish based ingredients towards plant content. These changes expose the industry to the vagaries of the highly dynamic plant protein market. Resulting variations in the precise composition of aqua feeds may carry unpredictable consequences for water quality, since some plant ingredients cause undesirable reductions in the mechanical stability of faeces. Dietary supplements known as binders that enhance the stability of faeces have the potential to mitigate these issues, but may also bring negative effects. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS The present study employs an in vitro model to perform the first fundamental rheological characterization of salmonid chyme, and a factorial experiment designed to investigate the impacts of the presence of rheologically active substances. RESULTS The highest mean viscosity values were measured for a treatment containing a 2:1 ratio of tara gum:xanthan gum, resulting in chyme four times more viscous than a control formulation containing the same amount of water. Shear resistance was quantified by analyses of slopes fitting the frequency sweep measurements. CONCLUSIONS These data open a new statistical approach to monitoring the consequences of market-driven changes in aqua feed composition and their impacts on the nutrition, health or performance of farmed fish.

Abstract
A two-phase feeding study evaluating performance of rainbow trout and comparing luminal and mucosal gastrointestinal tract (GIT) bacterial community compositions when fed two alternative protein diets in two rearing systems was conducted. Alternative protein diets (animal protein and plant protein diets) balanced with crystalline amino acids: lysine, methionine and threonine or unbalanced, were fed to rainbow trout in two separate water systems (recirculating (RR) and flow-through (FF)) for a period of 16 weeks. The four diets, each contained 38% digestible protein and 20% fats, were fed to rainbow trout with an average weight of 12.02 ± 0.61 g, and sorted at 30 fish/tank and 12 tanks per dietary treatment. Phase 1 lasted for 8 weeks after which fish from each tank were randomly divided, with one-half moved to new tanks of the opposing system (i.e. from RR to FF and vice versa). The remaining halves were retained in their initial tank and system, and fed their original diets for another 8 weeks (phase 2). After the 16th week, 3 fish/tank were sampled for each of proximate analysis, body indexes and 16S rRNA analysis of GIT microbiota. Fish weight (P = 0.0008, P = 0.0030, P<0.0010) and body fat (P = 0.0008, P = 0.0041, P = 0.0177) were significantly affected by diet, diet quality (balanced or unbalanced) and system, respectively. Feed intake (P = 0.0008) and body energy (P<0.0010) were altered by system. Body indexes were not affected by dietary treatment and water systems. Compositional dissimilarities existed between samples from the rearing water and GIT locations (ANOSIM: (R = 0.29, P = 0.0010), PERMANOVA: R = 0.39, P = 0.0010), but not in dietary samples (ANOSIM: R = 0.004, P = 0.3140, PERMANOVA: R = 0.008, P = 0.4540). Bacteria were predominantly from the phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. Their abundance differed with more dissimilarity in the luminal samples (ANOSIM: R = 0.40, P = 0.0010, PERMANOVA: R = 0.56, P = 0.0010) than those from the mucosal intestine (ANOSIM: R = 0.37, P = 0.0010, PERMANOVA: R = 0.41, P = 0.0010). Bacteria generally associated with carbohydrate and certain amino acids metabolism were observed in the mucosal intestine while rearing water appeared to serve as the main route of colonization of Aeromonas and Acinetobacter in the rainbow trout.

Abstract
Soybean carbohydrate is often found to limit the use of protein in soy flour as food and animal feed due to its indigestibility to monogastric animal. In the current study, an enzymatic process was developed to produce not only soy protein concentrate and soy protein isolate without indigestible carbohydrate but also soluble reducing sugar as potential fermentation feedstock. For increasing protein content in the product and maximizing protein recovery, the process was optimized to include the following steps: hydrolysis of soy flour using an Aspergillus niger enzyme system; separation of the solid and liquid by centrifugation (10 min at 7500×g); an optional step of washing to remove entrapped hydrolysate from the protein-rich wet solid stream by ethanol (at an ethanol-to-wet-solid ratio (v/w) of 10, resulting in a liquid phase of approximately 60 % ethanol); and a final precipitation of residual protein from the sugar-rich liquid stream by heat treatment (30 min at 95 °C). Starting from 100 g soy flour, this process would produce approximately 54 g soy protein concentrate with 70 % protein (or, including the optional solid wash, 43 g with 80 % protein), 9 g soy protein isolate with 89 % protein, and 280 ml syrup of 60 g/l reducing sugar. The amino acid composition of the soy protein concentrate produced was comparable to that of the starting soy flour. Enzymes produced by three fungal species, A. niger, Trichoderma reesei, and Aspergillus aculeatus, were also evaluated for effectiveness to use in this process.

Abstract
The effect of dietary inclusion of soy protein concentrate (SPC) and simultaneous supplementation with taurine on the growth, hematology, blood biochemistry, and liver histology of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) juveniles was assessed. Four isoproteic and isolipidic diets were formulated containing either 30 or 60% of SPC (diets S30 and S60), supplemented or not with 1% of taurine (diets S30T and S60T). A fishmeal-based diet formulated for totoaba nutritional requirements, without SPC and taurine supplementation, was used as a reference diet. Triplicate groups of 32 totoaba juveniles (average body weight 7.5 ± 0.6 g) were fed these diets for 45 days. Results showed that growth performance in fish fed S30, S30T, and S60T was similar to fish fed the reference diet. Red blood cells and hematocrit in fish fed with supplemented taurine in both levels of SPC (S30T and S60T) were similar to the fish fed the RD; the addition of taurine improved the state of hydration of totoaba. Plasmatic hemoglobin in fish fed the lower SPC level was similar to fish fed the RD. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in fish fed S30T was similar to fish fed the RD, taurine supplementation prevented the development of hypochromic anemia in this group of fish. Plasmatic albumin in fish fed S30 was similar to fish fed the RD. Plasmatic total protein and globulin concentration increased and AL:GLB (albumin:globulin ratio) decreased in fish fed the SPC-based diets despite taurine supplementation. The protein profile showed that taurine supplementation did not prevent a possible inflammatory process (increased globulins, decreased AL:GLB) in juvenile totoaba fed both levels of SPC. Glucose concentration was similar in fish fed S30, S30T, and S60T. The histological hepatic index was highest in fish fed S60. These results suggest that with an appropriate nutritional level, taurine may play an important modulatory role in the hematology and blood biochemistry status in totoaba fed SPC-based diets, contributing to the enhancement of an overall healthy growth performance.

Abstract
The kinetics of starch digestion in the small intestine, nutrient utilisation and the performance of growing pigs that were fed diets containing maize of different particle sizes were evaluated. For the performance evaluation, 42 barrows and females (initial weight: 30.5 ± 1.78 kg) were used in a randomised block design with three treatments [maize with different geometric mean diameters (GMD) of 550, 700 and 850 μm] and seven replications. To evaluate the kinetics of starch digestion, one animal from each experimental trial was sacrificed. The small intestine was removed and separated into five equal parts. The starch digestibility in each segment was determined. To determine the total digestibility and nitrogen balance, 24 barrows (initial weight: 41.3 ± 4.72 kg) were housed in metabolism cages in a randomised block design with three treatments and eight repetitions. The animals that were fed diets containing maize of 550-μm GMD exhibited better (P = 0.008) feed conversion. However, the digestion of starch was gradual and variable among the degrees of grinding that were tested. There were higher (P = 0.008; 0.005 and 0.009) digestible energy, dry matter digestibility and nitrogen uptake in diets containing the maize ground to 550 and 700 μm in GMD. Thus, the smallest GMD of maize (550 μm) that was used in diets for growing pigs improves feed conversion. GMD of 550, 700 and 850 μm of maize were associated with rapid, intermediate and slow starch digestion, respectively.

The effect of dietary incorporation of soy protein concentrate (SPC) and the concomitant supplementation with taurine on hepatic intermediary metabolism and antioxidant status of totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) juveniles was assessed. Four isoproteic and isolipidic diets were formulated containing either 30 or 60% of SPC (diets SP30 and SP60), supplemented or not with 1% of taurine (diets SP30T and SP60T). A fish meal (FM) based diet, without SPC and taurine supplementation, was used as a control. Triplicate groups of 32 totoaba juveniles (average body mass=7.5g) were fed these diets over 45days. Results revealed that dietary FM replacement by SPC depressed the overall intermediary metabolism. Activity of key enzymes of amino acid catabolism and gluconeogenesis was significantly reduced and a trend to reduce glycolysis and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was observed. The incorporation of the highest level of SPC also significantly increased hepatic lipid peroxidation and the activity of superoxide dismutase. Concomitant taurine supplementation restored the activity of amino acid catabolic and gluconeogenic enzymes and hexokinase to levels similar of those of the control diet. Taurine supplementation also led to a significant increase of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and catalase activity, as well as to a significant reduction of liver lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that taurine may play an important metabolic modulation action on totoaba fed SPC based diets, contributing to the enhancement of the overall metabolism and to the reduction of liver oxidative damage.

Abstract
In aquaculture, when alternative protein sources of Fish Meal (FM) in diets are investigated, Plant Proteins (PP) can be used. Among them, Vital Wheat Gluten (VWG) is a proteinaceous material obtained from wheat after starch extraction. "It is mainly composed of two types of proteins, gliadins and glutenins, which confer specific visco-elasticity that's to say ability to form a network providing suitable binding. This will lead to specific technological properties that are notably relevant to extruded feeds". Besides these properties, VWG is a high-protein ingredient with an interesting amino-acid profile. Whereas it is rather low in lysine, it contains more sulfur amino acids than other PP sources and it is high in glutamine, which is known to improve gut health and modulate immunity. VWG is a protein source with one of the highest nitrogen digestibility due to a lack of protease inhibitor activity and to the lenient process used to make the product. By this way, addition of VWG in diet does not adversely affect growth performance in many fish species, even at a high level, and may secure high PP level diets that can induce health damages.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the role of soluble non-starch polysaccharide (guar gum) on white sea bream Diplodus sargus, glucose and lipid metabolism. A control diet was formulated to contain 40 % crude protein, 14 % crude lipids and 35 % pregelatinized maize starch, and three other diets were formulated similar to the control diet except for guar gum, which was included at 4 % (diet GG4), 8 % (diet GG8) or 12 % (diet GG12). Diets were fed to the fish for 9 weeks on a pair-feeding scheme. Guar gum had no effect on growth performance, feed efficiency, glycaemia, cholesterolaemia and plasma triacylglyceride levels. Hepatic glucokinase and pyruvate kinase activities, liver glycogen content and liver insulin-like growth factor-I gene expression were not affected by dietary guar gum, while fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity was lower in fish fed guar gum-supplemented diets. Hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was higher in fish fed diets GG4 and GG8 than in the control group. Overall, data suggest that in contrast to mammals guar gum had no effect on white sea bream glucose utilization and in lowering plasma cholesterol and triacylglyceride levels. However, it seems to contribute to lower endogenous glucose production.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of four types of antinutritional factor (phytic acid, stachyose, soy saponins and soy isoflavones) on lipoprotein levels in plasma of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. A basal diet was prepared with fish meal as primary protein source, the other diets were supplemented with 0·2, 0·4 or 0·8% phytic acid, 0·4, 0·8 or 1·5% stachyose, 0·1, 0·35 or 0·7% soy saponins and 0·10, 0·35 or 0·70% soy isoflavones, by dry mass, in place of white flour in the basal diet. Total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels in plasma of P. olivaceus were not affected by phytic acid or stachyose. In general, addition of 0·2-0·8% phytic acid or 0·4-1·5% stachyose decreased plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, increased plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, thereby increasing the LDL-C:HDL-C ratio. By contrast, supplementation with 0·35-0·7% soy saponins generally depressed plasma TC levels and the LDL-C:HDL-C ratio. Supplementation with 0·35-0·7% soy isoflavones, however, increased plasma TC and TG levels. These results indicate that soy saponins may be partly responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effects of soybean meal.

Abstract
Little research has been done in optimizing the nitrogenous fraction of the fish diets in order to minimize welfare problems. The purpose of this review is to give an overview on how amino acid (AA) metabolism may be affected when fish are under stress and the possible effects on fish welfare when sub-optimal dietary nitrogen formulations are used to feed fish. In addition, it intends to evaluate the current possibilities, and future prospects, of using improved dietary nitrogen formulations to help fish coping with predictable stressful periods. Both metabolomic and genomic evidence show that stressful husbandry conditions affect AA metabolism in fish and may bring an increase in the requirement of indispensable AA. Supplementation in arginine and leucine, but also eventually in lysine, methionine, threonine and glutamine, may have an important role in enhancing the innate immune system. Tryptophan, as precursor for serotonin, modulates aggressive behaviour and feed intake in fish. Bioactive peptides may bring important advances in immunocompetence, disease control and other aspects of welfare of cultured fish. Fishmeal replacement may reduce immune competence, and the full nutritional potential of plant-protein ingredients is attained only after the removal or inactivation of some antinutritional factors. This review shows that AA metabolism is affected when fish are under stress, and this together with sub-optimal dietary nitrogen formulations may affect fish welfare. Furthermore, improved dietary nitrogen formulations may help fish coping with predictable stressful events.

Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da utilização de diferentes ingredientes fibrosos nas dietas sobre o desempenho, a composição corporal e a morfometria intestinal de juvenis de pacu. Foram avaliadas cinco dietas isoproteicas (23% de proteína digestível), isoenergéticas (3250kcal de energia digestível/kg) e isofibrosas (9% de fibra bruta), sendo a principal fonte fibrosa de cada constituída por farelo de soja, casca de soja, farelo de girassol e polpa cítrica; esta última em dois níveis de inclusão (30 e 45%). Foram utilizados 300 juvenis de pacu (25,12±0,78 gramas), alojados em 25 aquários (200 litros). Os melhores resultados de crescimento e conversão alimentar foram obtidos com as dietas contendo farelo de soja e farelo de girassol. As dietas contendo casca de soja e polpa cítrica prejudicaram o desempenho dos juvenis de pacu, e o efeito negativo foi acentuado com o aumento da inclusão de polpa cítrica. Além disto, somente nos peixes alimentados com a dieta com 45% de polpa cítrica foi observada diminuição na densidade de vilosidades por área no epitélio intestinal. A partir dos resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que alguns ingredientes fibrosos podem afetar negativamente o desempenho e as características do epitélio intestinal de juvenis de pacu.

Abstract
The main objective of this research was to study the characteristics of starch granules and their influences on in vitro and pig prececal starch digestion of corn, dehulled barley, wheat, and potato. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the starch endosperm structure in the parent material as well as in vitro starch digestion. The results showed that corn starch granules were polyhedral, with a diameter ranging from 2 to 10 μm, whereas those of dehulled barley and wheat were spherical, with a diameter ranging from 5 to 20 μm. Potato had the largest starch granules among starch sources reported herein, with oval spheres of 10-50 μm in diameter. In vitro starch hydrolysis showed that starch granules of corn degraded faster than the starch of dehulled barley and wheat, with the potato starch being degraded the slowest. The in vivo digestibility trial using ileal-cannulated pigs confirmed the starch degradation of grains. The in vitro (x, %) and in vivo (y, %) digestibility were highly correlated [y = 6.5304x - 538.48 (R(2) = 0.9924)]. On the basis of the results, in vitro starch hydrolysis might be useful in predicting in vivo prececal starch digestibility. The digestion kinetic characteristics of different starch sources might be employed to evaluate the starch digestive rate at the pig ileum.

Abstract
The aim of this experiment was to investigate the physiological and growth response of young turkeys (up to 8 weeks of age) to dietary replacement of soybean meal (SBM) by soy protein concentrate (PC) or protein isolate (PI). This replacement resulted in a differentiated dietary concentration of α-galactosides of over 2.5% in the SBM diet, approximately 2% with a mixture SBM and PC, 1% with a PC diet and 0.1% with a PI diet. Each treatment was applied in two ways: with lower (3.5%) or higher (5.3%) dietary crude fibre content, made by supplementation with soybean hulls. The highest and lowest body weight of turkeys was recorded both after the first and second 4-week half of the study in the PC and PI-type diets respectively. A gradual withdrawal of α-galactosides from a diet was accompanied by a decline in ileal tissue mass, ileal viscosity and activity of endogenous maltase (the latter was found to be significant at 4 weeks of age). At the same time, two-way anova revealed that an elevated level of crude fibre (HF treatment) caused an increase in ileal tissue mass (p < 0.05 after 4 weeks of feeding) as well as a decrease in activity level of intestinal sucrase and maltase. The presence of raffinose family oligosaccharides in a diet, in contrast to dietary crude fibre level, significantly affected the caecal metabolism. The rate of bacterial production of short-chain fatty acids in the caeca was distinctly diminished by dietary withdrawal of α-galactosides. In conclusion, the soy protein concentrate, in contrast to the protein isolate preparation, exerted positive effects on the turkeys' growth and gastrointestinal tract physiology and should be considered as an effective SBM substitute.

Abstract
Estudou-se a influência da fibra oriunda de diferentes fontes - feno de alfafa, polpa de cítrus e casca de soja - sobre o desempenho, coeficientes de digestibilidade, parâmetros sanguíneos e características da carne de coelhos submetidos às dietas experimentais. Os animais foram distribuídos em três tratamentos, que consistiram de: FA - ração-controle, com feno de alfafa; PC - substituição total do feno de alfafa por polpa de cítrus; e CS - substituição total do feno de alfafa por casca de soja. As diferentes frações da fibra advindas da polpa de cítrus e da casca de soja não influenciaram o desempenho dos animais aos 89 dias e mostram que esses ingredientes podem ser utilizados como substitutos do feno de alfafa na dieta de coelhos. A qualidade de fibra da polpa de cítrus reduziu os níveis séricos de triacilglicerol, colesterol e hemoglobina dos animais. A baixa quantidade de lignina em relação à celulose e à hemicelulose da casca de soja propiciou melhor coeficiente de digestibilidade dos nutrientes e maior maciez da carne, porém menor deposição proteica quando comparada com a dieta com polpa de cítrus.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of diets containing soybean meal (SBM), soybean protein concentrate (SPC), and soybean protein isolate (SPI) on growth performance and gut function of the young turkey. A total of 812 one-day-old male turkey poults were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments, with 7 pens per treatment and 29 birds per pen. The 4 experimental diets contained SBM, SBM-SPC, SPC, and SPI and were fed throughout the two 4-wk experimental periods. In each period, the diets were isonitrogenous and isocaloric and contained similar amounts of total and water-soluble nonstarch polysaccharides. The content of oligosaccharides differed among the diets and averaged 2.4, 1.9, 0.9, and 0.1% for SBM, SBM-SPC, SPC, and SPI, respectively. When compared with SBM, birds consuming the SBM-SPC and SPC diets had higher (P<0.05) final BW (4.32 vs. 4.45 and 4.46 kg, respectively). Incorporation of SPI as a substitute for SBM resulted in improved (P<0.05) feed utilization (from 1.76 to 1.67) but did not affect the final BW. Significant changes in cecal concentrations of short-chain fatty acids were observed and averaged 130, 103, and 89 micromol/g of digesta for the SBM, SBM-SPC, and SPC diets, respectively. This coincided with the proportional decrease in dietary oligosaccharide content (from 2.4 to 0.9%) and was further substantiated by a significant decrease in ileum weights. Feeding the SPI diet resulted in the lowest ileal and cecal tissue weights as well as the lowest cecal short-chain fatty acids concentration. There was no effect of diet on digesta pH, viscosity, and mucosal sucrase and maltase activities. Bacterial beta-glucuronidase activity was decreased (P=0.08) in the cecum (from 0.98 to 0.60 U/g) with decreased dietary oligosaccharide content. In conclusion, partial or almost complete substitution of SBM with SPC suppressed the fermentation processes in the ceca but enhanced the growth rate. Substitution of SBM with SPI significantly improved feed utilization but decreased BW of 4-wk-old turkeys with no effect on growth rate of older 8-wk-old birds.

Abstract
The Asian weatherloach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Cobitidae), is a facultative air-breathing teleost fish that makes use of its hindgut or intestine as an accessory air-breathing organ (ABO). The hindgut is highly modified, being well vascularized with intraepithelial capillaries, which makes it well suited for gas exchange. However, the consequences for nutrient uptake, the traditional function of the intestine are unknown. The alimentary canal was examined histologically to assess differences between the fore-, mid- and hindgut regions that have been considered as the digestive, spiral and respiratory zones, respectively. In order to characterise the potential digestive (absorptive) function of the respiratory zone we used semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect the presence of the intestinal Na(+):glucose cotransporter (SGLT1; SLC5A1) and H(+):peptide cotransporter (PEPT1a; SLC15A1) and partially sequenced the SGLT1 and PEPT1a cDNAs. These two transporters play important roles in the absorption of carbohydrate and di-/tripeptides, respectively, in the gut of fishes and other vertebrates and were therefore used as markers for potential nutrient uptake function. We also determined their tissue distributions through semi-quantitative RT-PCR. The effects of diet composition (high protein or high carbohydrate) or fasting on gene expression were also examined. SGLT1 expression was found in kidney, liver, heart, as well as in the three zones of the gut except the most distal part of the hindgut. PEPT1a mRNA was found in heart, brain, liver, and fore- and midgut, but absent in the hindgut. Our results clearly show high expression of SGLT1 (both mRNA and protein by immunolocalization) and PEPT1a (mRNA) in the foregut and midgut correlated with the digestive region of the gut. Modulatory effects of diet on the gene expression for both SGLT1 and PEPT1a were not observed. The presence of SGLT1 transcripts in the respiratory zone of the intestine suggests an overlap in function. However, in the case of PEPT1a, the distal limit was the midgut. Thus, despite its highly modified structure, the hindgut of the loach retains some potential nutrient uptake function.

Abstract
A feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of exogenous enzymes (phytase, non-starch polysaccharide enzymes: WX and VP, supplied by DSM) on growth performance and excretion of Japanese seabass (Lateolabrax japonicus) (initial mass 6.26+/-0.10 g). A basal diet was used as a control that contained a mixed protein source, and lysine, methionine and valine were supplemented to simulate the essential amino acid pattern of fish meal. Four other diets were supplemented with 200 mg phytase (500 IU), 400 mg VP, 800 mg WX, or a combination of 800 mg WX and 400 mg VP per kg diet, respectively. Each diet was assigned to triplicate groups of fish in floating sea cages, and each cage was stocked with 60 fish. The results showed specific growth rate (SGR) and feed efficiency ratio (FER) were not significantly improved by the phytase supplementation. However, supplementations with WX and VP significantly enhanced the SGR and FER (P<0.05). Phosphorus retention was significantly increased by the supplementation with phytase, whereas nitrogen retention was also enhanced by supplementations of non-starch polysaccharide enzymes (P<0.05). The excretion experiment showed that the soluble phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen in starved fish were constant, irrespective of dietary treatments. The total phosphorus effluent in fish fed the diet with phytase supplementation was significantly lower compared with the control group after feeding to satiation (P<0.05), but soluble phosphorus excretion was still independent of dietary treatments. The ammonia excretion in satiated fish significantly decreased with supplementations of non-starch polysaccharide enzymes.

Abstract
Viscosity is a physicochemical property associated with dietary fibers, particularly soluble dietary fibers. Viscous dietary fibers thicken when mixed with fluids and include polysaccharides such as gums, pectins, psyllium, and beta-glucans. Although insoluble fiber particles may affect viscosity measurement, viscosity is not an issue regards insoluble dietary fibers. Viscous fibers have been credited for beneficial physiological responses in human, animal, and animal-alternative in vitro models. The following article provides a review of viscosity as related to dietary fiber including definitions and instrumentation, factors affecting viscosity of solutions, and effects of viscous polysaccharides on glycemic response, blood lipid attenuation, intestinal enzymatic activity, digestibility, and laxation.

Abstract
A total of 832 samples of soybeans were screened by near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy, to identify soybean samples with a lower content of oligosaccharides and nonstarch polysaccharides (NSP). Of these, 38 samples were identified on the basis of variation in protein content and agronomic value and submitted to high-resolution NIR spectroscopy. On the basis of the NIR data, 12 samples were further selected for chromatographic characterization of carbohydrate composition (mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides and NSP). Their soluble proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE). Using partial least-squares regression (PLSR), it was possible to predict the content of total NSP from the high-resolution NIR spectra, suggesting that NIR is a suitable and rapid nondestructive method to determine carbohydrate composition in soybeans. The 2DE analyses showed varying intensities of several proteins, including the glycinin G1 precursor. PLSR analysis showed a negative correlation between this protein and insoluble NSP and total uronic acid (UA).

Abstract
The study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of dietary protein sources on lipogenesis and fat deposition in a marine teleost, the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Four isonitrogenous (crude protein (CP, Nx6.25), 44% DM) and isoenergetic (22-23 kJ/g DM) diets were formulated to contain one of the following as the major protein source: fish meal (FM), one of two soy protein concentrates (SPC) and corn gluten meal (CGM). Apparent digestibility coefficients of the diets and raw ingredients, as well as soluble nitrogen (ammonia and urea) and phosphorus excretion were measured. Growth rates of seabass fed plant protein-based diets were significantly lower than those fed fish meal based diet. The protein utilisation was strongly correlated to the dietary essential amino acids index. Measurements of N excretion (ammonia and urea nitrogen) confirmed these data. Daily fat gain at the whole body level ranged between 1.1 to 1.7 g/kg BW, with the highest values being recorded in fish fed the fish meal based diet. Levels of plasma triglycerides and cholesterol were lower in fish fed soy protein diets than in those fed the diet solely based on fish meal. Soy protein rich diets decreased the activities of selected hepatic lipogenic enzymes (glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, ATP-citrate lysase, acetylcoenzyme A carboxylase and fatty acid synthetase). Highest lipogenic enzyme activities where found in fish fed the fish meal diet, except for fatty acid synthetase which was increased in seabass fed the corn-gluten meal based diets. Overall data suggest that dietary protein sources affects fat deposition and the lipogenic potential in European seabass.

Abstract
Current feed evaluation systems for poultry are based on digested components (fat, protein and nitrogen-free extracts). Digestible starch is the most important energy source in broiler chicken feeds and is part of the nitrogen-free extract fraction. Digestible starch may be predicted using an in vitro method that mimics digestive processes in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. An experiment was designed to use this method for predicting site, rate and extent of starch digestion in broiler chickens. In vitro starch digestion was studied in 12 experimental diets differing in starch sources. These diets were also used in a digestibility trial with broiler chickens. Correlations between in vitro and in vivo starch digestion were calculated. Starch digestion after 2 h incubation correlated well with in vivo starch digestion in the first half of the small intestine (r = 0.94). A 4-h incubation period resulted in a good correlation between in vitro starch digestion and ileal starch digestion (r = 0.96). In vitro starch digestion rate (h(-1)) correlated well with in vivo starch digestion rate (r = 0.87). In vitro starch digestion of individual starch sources was additive. It appeared that legume seeds and waxy corn contained two starch fractions, which were digested at different rates. We conclude that starch digestion rate in broiler chickens is well predicted by the in vitro method.

Abstract
Dietary starch is the major energy source for broiler chickens, and knowledge about its digestive behavior can be important. In a digestibility trial with 720 broiler chickens, site, rate and extent of starch digestion were measured for 12 feedstuffs. Starch digestion was determined using the slaughter technique, which involves removal of the small intestine from the recently killed chicken, with manual collection of the contents. Starch digestion coefficients were calculated from remaining starch in three segments of the small intestine and in excreta. Mean retention time in four segments of the small intestine was measured. This enabled calculations for starch digestion rate (k(d)). Ileal starch digestibility varied from 33% (potato starch) to 99% (tapioca). Retention time for digesta in the postduodenal small intestine varied from 136 min (barley diet) to 182 min (potato diet). On the basis of starch digestion rates, a distinction was made between slowly digestible starch (k(d) < 1 h(-1)), gradually digestible starch (k(d):1-2 h(-1)) and rapidly digestible starch (k(d) > 2 h(-1)). Starch from common beans was digested most slowly (k(d): 0.5 h(-1)), and starch from tapioca was digested most rapidly (k(d): 4.3 h(-1)). Starch digestion rates of potato starch and legume seeds were lower than those of cereal grains and tapioca. Degradation of starch entering the hind gut of the birds did not occur. Milling of corn affected rate, but not the extent of starch digestion. We concluded that site of starch digestion within the small intestine is not an accurate indicator for starch digestion rate.
