Are Ionic Liquids Chemically Stable?

Hydrogels composite optimized for low resistance and loading-unloading hysteresis for flexible biosensors

With the advancement of wearable and implantable medical devices, hydrogel flexible bioelectronic devices have attracted significant interest due to exhibiting tissue-like mechanical compliance, biocompatibility, and low electrical resistance. In this study, the development and comprehensive performance evaluation of poly(acrylic acid)/ N,N'-bis(acryloyl) cystamine/ 1-butyl-3-ethenylimidazol-1-ium:bromide (PAA/NB/IL) hydrogels designed for flexible sensor applications are introduced. Engineered through a combination of physical and chemical cross-linking strategies, these hydrogels exhibit strong mechanical properties, high biocompatibility, and effective sensing capabilities. At 95 % strain, the compressive modulus of PAA/NB/IL 100 reach up to 3.66 MPa, with the loading-unloading process showing no significant hysteresis loop, indicating strong mechanical stability and elasticity. An increase in the IL content was observed to enlarge the porosity of the hydrogels, thereby influencing their swelling behavior and sensing functionality. Biocompatibility assessments revealed that the hemolysis rate was below 5 %, ensuring their suitability for biomedical applications. Upon implantation in rats, a minimal acute inflammatory response was observed, comparable to that of the biocompatibility control poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). These results suggest that PAA/NB/IL hydrogels hold promise as biomaterials for biosensors, offering a balance of mechanical integrity, physiological compatibility, and sensing sensitivity, thereby facilitating advanced healthcare monitoring solutions.

An ion synergism fluorescence probe via Cu2+ triggered competition interaction to detect glyphosate

The widespread use of glyphosate (Gly) poses significant risks to environmental and human health, underscoring the urgent need for its sensitive and rapid detection. In this work, we innovated by developing a novel material, ionic liquids, which formed the ionic probe "[P66614]2[2,3-DHN]-Cu2+ (PDHN-Cu2+)" through coordination with Cu2+. This probe capitalized on the distinctive fluorescence quenching properties of ionic liquids in the presence of Cu2+, driven by synergistic interactions between anions and cations. Glyphosate disrupted the PDHN-Cu2+ coordination structure due to its stronger affinity for Cu2+, triggering a "turn-on" fluorescence response. Impressively, PDHN-Cu2+ enabled the sensitive detection of glyphosate within just one minute, achieving a detection limit as low as 71.4 nM and excellent recovery rates of 97-103% in diverse samples. This groundbreaking approach, utilizing ionic probes, lays a robust foundation for the accurate and real-time monitoring of pesticides, employing a strategy based on synergism and competitive coordination.

DNA nanotechnology in ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Nucleic acids have the ability to generate advanced nanostructures in a controlled manner and can interact with target sequences or molecules with high affinity and selectivity. For this reason, they have applications in a variety of nanotechnology applications, from highly specific sensors to smart nanomachines and even in other applications such as enantioselective catalysis or drug delivery systems. However, a common disadvantage is the use of water as the ubiquitous solvent. The use of nucleic acids in non-aqueous solvents offers the opportunity to create a completely new toolbox with unprecedented degrees of freedom. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are the most promising alternative solvents due to their unique electrolyte and solvent roles, as well as their ability to maintain the stability and functionality of nucleic acids. This review aims to be a comprehensive, critical, and accessible evaluation of how much this goal has been achieved and what are the most critical parameters for accomplishing a breakthrough.

A fluorescence ionic probe utilizing Cu2+ assisted competition for detecting glyphosate abused in green tea

Food fraud caused by the violation of glyphosate use in tea is frequently exposed, posing a potential health risk to consumers and undermining trust in food safety. In the work, an ionic fluorescent probe "[P66614] [4HQCA]-Cu2+ (PHQCA-Cu2+)" was constructed using Cu2+ and ionic liquids coordination through a competitive coordination strategy to detect glyphosate. This probe exhibited a prominent "turn-on" fluorescence response in glyphosate detection. PHQCA-Cu2+was destroyed by glyphosate with its strong coordination capability, and a new complex re-formed simultaneously between glyphosate and the Cu2+ in it, where Cu2+ served as an "invisible indicator" influencing fluorescence changes. Remarkably, PHQCA-Cu2+formed rapidly within 5 s, demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and selectivity, and satisfactory detection performance on paper strips impregnated withPHQCA-Cu2+.Importantly,PHQCA-Cu2+showed excellent recoveries in various green tea, which offered a viable method for identifying contaminated products from the supply chain quickly to enhance overall food safety surveillance.

Wetting Behavior-Induced Interfacial transmission of Energy and Signal: Materials, Mechanisms, and Applications

Wetting behaviors can significantly affect the transport of energy and signal (E&S) through vapor, solid, and liquid interfaces, which has prompted increased interest in interfacial science and technology. E&S transmission can be achieved using electricity, light, and heat, which often accompany and interact with each other. Over the past decade, their distinctive transport phenomena during wetting processes have made significant contributions to various domains. However, few studies have analyzed the intricate relationship between wetting behavior and E&S transport. This review summarizes and discusses the mechanisms of electrical, light, and heat transmission at wetting interfaces to elucidate their respective scientific issues, technical characteristics, challenges, commonalities, and potential for technological convergence. The materials, structures, and devices involved in E&S transportation are also analyzed. Particularly, harnessing synergistic advantages in practical applications and constructing advanced, multifunctional, and highly efficient smart systems based on wetted interfaces is the aim to provide strategies.

Self-Healing Ionogel-Enabled Self-Healing and Wide-Temperature Flexible Zinc-Air Batteries with Ultra-Long Cycling Lives

Hydrogel-based zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are promising flexible rechargeable batteries. However, the practical application of hydrogel-based ZABs is limited by their short service life, narrow operating temperature range, and repair difficulty. Herein, a self-healing ionogel is synthesized by the photopolymerization of acrylamide and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether acrylate in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide with zinc acetate dihydrate and first used as an electrolyte to fabricate self-healing ZABs. The obtained self-healing ionogel has a wide operating temperature range, good environmental and electrochemical stability, high ionic conductivity, satisfactory mechanical strength, repeatable and efficient self-healing properties enabled by the reversibility of hydrogen bonding, and the ability to inhibit the production of dendrites and by-products. Notably, the self-healing ionogel has the highest ionic conductivity and toughness compared to other reported self-healing ionogels. The prepared self-healing ionogel is used to assemble self-healing flexible ZABs with a wide operating temperature range. These ZABs have ultra-long cycling lives and excellent stability under harsh conditions. After being damaged, the ZABs can repeatedly self-heal to recover their battery performance, providing a long-lasting and reliable power supply for wearable devices. This work opens new opportunities for the development of electrolytes for ZABs.

Reactive capture and electrochemical conversion of CO2 with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO2, eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO2, often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode-electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation.

SnO2 Interacted with Sodium Thiosulfate for Perovskite Solar Cells over 25% Efficiency

Tin oxide (SnO2) as electron transportation layer (ETL) has demonstrated remarkable performance applied in perovskite solar cells but still accommodated a host of defects such as oxygen vacancies, uncoordinated Sn4+ , and absorbed hydroxyl groups. Here, we use inorganic sodium thiosulfate Na2S2O3 to modify SnO2 nanoparticles in a bulk blending manner. Strong interaction between Na2S2O3 and SnO2 occurs, as reflected from the elemental chemical state change. The interaction has endowed the SnO2 film with better uniformity, increased conductivity, and more matched energy level with perovskite. Moreover, the modified SnO2 film as a substrate could promote the crystallization of perovskite by suppressing unreacted residual PbI2. The trap density from perovskite bulk to the SnO2 film across their interface has been effectively reduced, thus inhibiting the nonradiative recombination and promoting the transportation and extraction of charge carriers. Finally, the solar cell based on modified SnO2 has achieved a champion efficiency of 25.2%, demonstrating the effectiveness and potential of sulfur-containing molecules on optimizing the SnO2 property.

Synthesis of lipophilic antioxidant tyrosol laurate using imidazolium ionic liquid [Bmim]HSO4 as a catalyst

Tyrosol is a natural phenolic compound with potent antioxidant properties in the field of food manufacturing. However, the low lipophilicity of tyrosol limited its application. Therefore, the construction of tyrosol laurate (Tyr-L) could effectively overcome the limitations of tyrosol. In this work, four ionic liquids (ILs) were applied for TYr-L preparation. Among them, the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([Bmim]HSO4) showed the best catalytic performance. The maximum TYr-L yield was achieved (94.24 ± 1.23 %) under the optimal conditions (reaction temperature 119 °C, substrate ratio 1:6.7, IL dosage 9.2 %, and reaction time 12 h). The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated and it was found that Ea, ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG were 80.81 kJ·mol-1, 77.63 kJ·mol-1, -82.08 J·(mol·K)-1, and 109.89 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The acidic [Bmim]HSO4 demonstrated excellent reusability and stability, even after 6 cycles. Furthermore, TYr-L showed superior ABTS radical scavenging ability, which could be further applied in various industrial processes.

Synthesis and physical properties of tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids based on 1-aryl-4,5-dimethylimidazolium cations

We present a new class of tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TAAILs) based on 1-aryl-4,5-dimethylimidazolium cations with electron-withdrawing and -donating substituents in different positions of the phenyl ring and the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NTf2) anion. We investigated the effect of additional methyl groups in the backbone of the imidazolium core on the physical properties regarding viscosity, conductivity and electrochemical window. With an electrochemical window of up to 6.3 V, which is unprecedented for TAAILs with an NTf2 anion, this new class of TAAILs demonstrates the opportunities that arise from modifications in the backbone of the imidazolium cation.

Highly sensitive detection of multiple antiviral drugs using graphitized hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes/ionic liquids-based electrochemical sensors

Global outbreaks and the spread of viral diseases in the recent years have led to a rapid increase in the usage of antiviral drugs (ATVs), the residues and metabolites of which are discharged into the natural environment, posing a serious threat to human health. There is an urgent need to develop sensitive and rapid detection tools for multiple ATVs. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor comprising a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with graphitized hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (G-MWCNT-OH) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6, IL) for the detection of six ATVs including famciclovir (FCV), remdesivir (REM), favipiravir (FAV), hydroxychloroquine sulfate (HCQ), cepharanthine (CEP) and molnupiravir (MOL). The morphology and structure of the G-MWCNT-OH/IL nanocomposites were characterized comprehensively, and the electroactive surface area and electron conductivity of G-MWCNT-OH/IL/GCE were determined using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The thermodynamic stability and non-covalent interactions between the G-MWCNT-OH and IL were evaluated through quantum chemical simulation calculations, and the mechanism of ATV detection using the G-MWCNT-OH/IL/GCE was thoroughly examined. The detection conditions were optimized to improve the sensitivity and stability of electrochemical sensors. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the G-MWCNT-OH/IL/GCE exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance and detected the ATVs over a wide concentration range (0.01-120 μM). The limit of detections (LODs) were 42.3 nM, 55.4 nM, 21.9 nM, 15.6 nM, 10.6 nM, and 3.2 nM for FCV, REM, FAV, HCQ, CEP, and MOL, respectively. G-MWCNT-OH/IL/GCE was also highly stable and selective to the ATVs in the presence of multiple interfering analytes. This sensor exhibited great potential for enabling the quantitative detection of multiple ATVs in actual water environment.

Ionic Liquids in Metal, Photo-, Electro-, and (Bio) Catalysis

Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Ultrahigh-Performance Fiber-Supported Iron-Based Ionic Liquid for Synthesizing 3,4-Dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones in a Cleaner Manner

Herein, a fiber-supported iron-based ionic liquid as a type of fibrous catalyst has been developed for the synthesis of bioactive 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-(1H)-ones (DHPMs) via three-component Biginelli reactions in a cleaner manner. The described fibrous catalyst was obtained from the commercially available polyetheretherketone (PEEK) fiber by postfunctionalization processes and was characterized and analyzed in detail by means of diversified technologies. Furthermore, the fiber-supported iron-based ionic liquids could mediate the classical three-component Biginelli reactions to proceed smoothly to gain a variety of substituted DHPMs with yields of up to 99%. The superior catalytic activities of the fibrous catalyst were ascribed to the quasi-homogeneous medium by ionic liquids generated in the surface layer of the PEEK fiber, which could afford an appropriate reaction zone and could further be available for the aggregation of substrates to facilitate the three-component reaction. Notably, the fibrous catalyst is available for recycling over 10 runs just by a pair of tweezers, and the operational procedure was capable of enlarging the catalytic system to the gram-scale without any performance degradation, which provided a cleaner manner to take advantage of the iron-based catalyst in organic synthesis with potential industrialization prospects.

Ionic liquids as the effective technology for enhancing transdermal drug delivery: Design principles, roles, mechanisms, and future challenges

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been proven to be an effective technology for enhancing drug transdermal absorption. However, due to the unique structural components of ILs, the design of efficient ILs and elucidation of action mechanisms remain to be explored. In this review, basic design principles of ideal ILs for transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) are discussed considering melting point, skin permeability, and toxicity, which depend on the molar ratios, types, functional groups of ions and inter-ionic interactions. Secondly, the contributions of ILs to the development of TDDS through different roles are described: as novel skin penetration enhancers for enhancing transdermal absorption of drugs; as novel solvents for improving the solubility of drugs in carriers; as novel active pharmaceutical ingredients (API-ILs) for regulating skin permeability, solubility, release, and pharmacokinetic behaviors of drugs; and as novel polymers for the development of smart medical materials. Moreover, diverse action mechanisms, mainly including the interactions among ILs, drugs, polymers, and skin components, are summarized. Finally, future challenges related to ILs are discussed, including underlying quantitative structure-activity relationships, complex interaction forces between anions, drugs, polymers and skin microenvironment, long-term stability, and in vivo safety issues. In summary, this article will promote the development of TDDS based on ILs.

Hydrocarbon Extraction with Ionic Liquids

Separation and reaction processes are key components employed in the modern chemical industry, and the former accounts for the majority of the energy consumption therein. In particular, hydrocarbon separation and purification processes, such as aromatics extraction, desulfurization, and denitrification, are challenging in petroleum refinement, an industrial cornerstone that provides raw materials for products used in human activities. The major technical shortcomings in solvent extraction are volatile solvent loss, product entrainment leading to secondary pollution, low separation efficiency, and high regeneration energy consumption due to the use of traditional organic solvents with high boiling points as extraction agents. Ionic liquids (ILs), a class of designable functional solvents or materials, have been widely used in chemical separation processes to replace conventional organic solvents after nearly 30 years of rapid development. Herein, we provide a systematic and comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art progress in ILs in the field of extractive hydrocarbon separation (i.e., aromatics extraction, desulfurization, and denitrification) including (i) molecular thermodynamic models of IL systems that enable rapid large-scale screening of IL candidates and phase equilibrium prediction of extraction processes; (ii) structure-property relationships between anionic and cationic structures of ILs and their separation performance (i.e., selectivity and distribution coefficients); (iii) IL-related extractive separation mechanisms (e.g., the magnitude, strength, and sites of intermolecular interactions depending on the separation system and IL structure); and (iv) process simulation and design of IL-related extraction at the industrial scale based on validated thermodynamic models. In short, this Review provides an easy-to-read exhaustive reference on IL-related extractive separation of hydrocarbon mixtures from the multiscale perspective of molecules, thermodynamics, and processes. It also extends to progress in IL analogs, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in this research area, and discusses the current challenges faced by ILs in related separation fields as well as future directions and opportunities.

Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the stabilization of biopharmaceuticals: A review

Biopharmaceuticals have allowed the control of previously untreatable diseases. However, their low solubility and stability still hinder their application, transport, and storage. Hence, researchers have applied different compounds to preserve and enhance the delivery of biopharmaceuticals, such as ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Although the biopharmaceutical industry can employ various substances for enhancing formulations, their effect will change depending on the properties of the target biomolecule and environmental conditions. Hence, this review organized the current state-of-the-art on the application of ILs and DESs to stabilize biopharmaceuticals, considering the properties of the biomolecules, ILs, and DESs classes, concentration range, types of stability, and effect. We also provided a critical discussion regarding the potential utilization of ILs and DESs in pharmaceutical formulations, considering the restrictions in this field, as well as the advantages and drawbacks of these substances for medical applications. Overall, the most applied IL and DES classes for stabilizing biopharmaceuticals were cholinium-, imidazolium-, and ammonium-based, with cholinium ILs also employed to improve their delivery. Interestingly, dilute and concentrated ILs and DESs solutions presented similar results regarding the stabilization of biopharmaceuticals. With additional investigation, ILs and DESs have the potential to overcome current challenges in biopharmaceutical formulation.

Unexpected Energy Applications of Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids and their various analogues are without doubt the scientific sensation of the last few decades, paving the way to a more sustainable society. Their versatile suite of properties, originating from an almost inconceivably large number of possible cation and anion combinations, allows tuning of the structure to serve a desired purpose. Ionic liquids hence offer a myriad of useful applications from solvents to catalysts, through to lubricants, gas absorbers, and azeotrope breakers. The purpose of this review is to explore the more unexpected of these applications, particularly in the energy space. It guides the reader through the application of ionic liquids and their analogues as i) phase change materials for thermal energy storage, ii) organic ionic plastic crystals, which have been studied as battery electrolytes and in gas separation, iii) key components in the nitrogen reduction reaction for sustainable ammonia generation, iv) as electrolytes in aluminum-ion batteries, and v) in other emerging technologies. It is concluded that there is tremendous scope for further optimizing and tuning of the ionic liquid in its task, subject to sustainability imperatives in line with current global priorities, assisted by artificial intelligence.

Carbon-Induced Changes in the Morphology and Wetting Behavior of Ionic Liquids on the Mesoscale

Thin films of ionic liquids (ILs) have gained significant attention due to their unique properties and broad applications. Extensive research has focused on studying the influence of ILs' chemical composition and substrate characteristics on the structure and morphology of IL films at the nano- and mesoscopic scales. This study explores the impact of carbon-coated surfaces on the morphology and wetting behavior of a series of alkylimidazolium-based ILs. Specifically, this work investigates the effect of carbon coating on the morphology and wetting behavior of short-chain ([C2C1im][NTf2] and [C2C1im][OTf]) and long-chain ([C8C1im][NTf2] and [C8C1im][OTf]) ILs deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO), silver (Ag), and gold (Au) substrates. A reproducible vapor deposition methodology was utilized for the deposition process. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the morphological and structural characteristics of the substrates and obtained IL films. The experimental data revealed that the IL films deposited on carbon-coated Au substrates showed minor changes in their morphology compared to that of the films deposited on clean Au surfaces. However, the presence of carbon coatings on the ITO and Ag surfaces led to significant morphological alterations in the IL films. Specifically, for short-chain ILs, the carbon film surface induced 2D growth of the IL film, followed by subsequent island growth. In contrast, for long-chain ILs deposited on carbon surfaces, layer-by-layer growth occurred without island formation, resulting in highly uniform and coalesced IL films. The extent of morphological changes observed in the IL films was found to be influenced by two crucial factors: the thickness of the carbon film on the substrate surface and the amount of IL deposition.

Tailored ultra-tough, antimicrobial and recyclable hydrogels based on chitosan and ionic liquid modified montmorillonite with different chain lengths for efficient adsorption of organic dyes in wastewater

Water pollution had exacerbated the global water crisis. Dye effluents posed a serious threat to the environment and human health, so there was an urgent need to develop sustainable methods to mitigate water pollution. In this work, sodium-based montmorillonite (MMT) was stripped using ionic liquids (ILs) with different chain lengths, and a pAAM/pAA/LMA/MMT@ILs-CS hydrogel adsorbent (MICHA) was prepared. The gel-based adsorbent was used to adsorb typical cationic (methylene blue: MB, rhodamine B: RhB) and anionic (methyl orange: MO, indigo carmine: IC) dyes from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacities of MI16CHA for MB, MO, IC and RhB were 349.6817, 325.415, 316.0142 and 339.8154 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data of MI16CHA for dyes were in accordance with the pseudo-first order and Langmuir isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism of MI16CHA on dyes were based on hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π interaction. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of dyes on MI16CHA was spontaneous and heat-absorbing. The selective experiments demonstrated that MI16CHA has a promising application in real industrial conditions. Cyclic adsorption tests demonstrated the excellent recyclability of MI16CHA. In addition, MI16CHA had excellent antimicrobial and mechanical properties, which endowed the gel adsorbent with anti-pollution and durability.

Ionic Liquid-Based Polymer Matrices for Single and Dual Drug Delivery: Impact of Structural Topology on Characteristics and In Vitro Delivery Efficiency

Previously reported amphiphilic linear and graft copolymers, derived from the ionic liquid [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (TMAMA_Cl‾), along with their conjugates obtained through modification either before or after polymerization with p-aminosalicylate anions (TMAMA_PAS‾), were employed as matrices in drug delivery systems (DDSs). Based on the counterion type in TMAMA units, they were categorized into single drug systems, manifesting as ionic polymers with chloride counterions and loaded isoniazid (ISO), and dual drug systems, featuring ISO loaded in self-assembled PAS conjugates. The amphiphilic nature of these copolymers was substantiated through the determination of the critical micelle concentration (CMC), revealing an increase in values post-ion exchange (from 0.011-0.063 mg/mL to 0.027-0.181 mg/mL). The self-assembling properties were favorable for ISO encapsulation, with drug loading content (DLC) ranging between 15 and 85% in both single and dual systems. In vitro studies indicated ISO release percentages between 16 and 61% and PAS release percentages between 20 and 98%. Basic cytotoxicity assessments using the 2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) test affirmed the non-toxicity of the studied systems toward human non-tumorigenic lung epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) cell lines, particularly in the case of dual systems bearing both ISO and PAS simultaneously. These results confirmed the effectiveness of polymeric carriers in drug delivery, demonstrating their potential for co-delivery in combination therapy.

New adsorbent materials based on PILs for Freon refrigerants

The development of refrigerant adsorbent materials is not only essential for enhancing the efficiency of refrigeration systems but also plays a pivotal role in environmental conservation and addressing global warming challenges. However, traditional adsorbent materials are often limited in widespread applications in industrial scales due to various disadvantages, such as low adsorption efficiency, difficulties in desorption, and poor reusability. In this context, three distinct PILs, P[EVIM][PF6], P[BVIM][PF6] and P[HVIM][PF6], were synthesized and characterized. In addition, their structure as well as adsorption capacities towards three different Freon refrigerants (R12, R22 and R134a) were explored. The results indicated that the synthesized PILs had high thermal stability and exceptional adsorption capabilities, with P[EVIM][PF6] demonstrating the best adsorption performance. These PILs consistently maintain a stable saturated adsorption capacity throughout nine consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, and the desorption rate of the adsorbent tubes consistently exceeded 96%. Thus, the superior recyclability of these PILs was verified. These PILs provide a promising route for efficient adsorption of Freon refrigerants, highlighting their potential significance in pertinent industries and environmental conservation efforts.

Concentrated ionic liquids for proteomics: Caveat emptor!

The use of concentrated ionic liquids (ILs) in the bioanalytical chemistry of proteins is sparse; typically, dilute aqueous IL solutions are used. Concentrated ILs have unique properties that may allow researchers to dissolve previously insoluble protein analytes, to increase the depth and robustness of sample preparation and the analysis of proteins. Previous research using concentrated ILs for this purpose is sparse and there is a need to systematically investigate the structure-activity relationship between the IL structure and its capacity to solubilise proteins. Here, bovine serum albumin was dissolved in various ionic liquids and monitored over time by light microscopy and SDS-PAGE. While qualitative, these measures provide a good estimate of, respectively, the dissolving power of an IL towards the given protein and the retained integrity of the protein. Hydrophilic ILs show the best solubilisation capacity and higher temperatures (in a restricted sense) improve the solubility of the protein. Higher temperatures and longer reaction times reduce the molecular weight of the protein, which could inhibit their applicability in proteomics, unless the conditions are judiciously controlled. Researchers should exercise caution when using concentrated ILs for protein analysis until the full scope and limitations are known, an aspect we are presently investigating.

1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as suitable solvent for BF3: the case of alkyne hydration. Chemistry vs electrochemistry

In order to replace the expensive metal/ligand catalysts and classic toxic and volatile solvents, commonly used for the hydration of alkynes, the hydration reaction of alkynes was studied in the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIm-BF4) adding boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3·Et2O) as catalyst. Different ionic liquids were used, varying the cation or the anion, in order to identify the best one, in terms of both efficiency and reduced costs. The developed method was efficaciously applied to different alkynes, achieving the desired hydration products with good yields. The results obtained using a conventional approach (i.e., adding BF3·Et2O) were compared with those achieved using BF3 electrogenerated in BMIm-BF4, demonstrating the possibility of obtaining the products of alkyne hydration with analogous or improved yields, using less hazardous precursors to generate the reactive species in situ. In particular, for terminal arylalkynes, the electrochemical route proved to be advantageous, yielding preferentially the hydration products vs the aldol condensation products. Importantly, the ability to recycle the ionic liquid in subsequent reactions was successfully demonstrated.

A Europium Metal-Organic Framework and Its Polymer Composite Membrane as Switch-Off Fluorescence Sensors for Antibiotic Detection in Lake Water

The detection of antibiotic residues is of great significance in monitoring their overuse in healthcare, livestock and poultry farming, and agricultural production. Herein, EuCl3 and 4,4'-dicarboxyl-diphenoxyethene (H2DPOE) ionothermally reacted in 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium chloride to give a europium metal-organic framework (Eu-DPOE). Eu-DPOE shows different fluorescence quenching rates for sensing eight antibiotics under different excitation wavelengths. Eu-DPOE displays a fast response, high selectivity, and sensitivity in antibiotic detection by fluorescence quenching. Eu-DPOE can sensitively detect TCs (tetracyclines), NOR (norfloxacin), NFT (furazolidone), ODZ (ornidazole), SDZ (sulfadiazine), and CHL (chloramphenicol) with limits of detection below 0.5 μmol/L. It provides a convenient and rapid tool for sensing antibiotics in aqueous solution. The detection mechanism is a competition absorption between DPOE2- and antibiotics with the supports from powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), UV-vis spectra, and fluorescence lifetime. With a composite membrane of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix loading Eu-DPOE (Eu-DPOE@PVDF), Eu-DPOE@PVDF exhibits a visual fluorescence response to NOR under a 254 nm UV lamp and NFT and CTC under 365 nm. Eu-DPOE@PVDF is applied in the quantitative detection of CTC, NOR, and NFT in lake water with recovery rates ranging from 88.37 to 113.8%. Totally, fluorescence-quenched Eu-DPOE@PVDF exhibits a fast response, high selectivity, and sensitivity in sensing CTC, NOR, and NFT.

The facile alkylation and iodination of imidazol(in)ium salts in the presence of cesium carbonate

The alkylation or iodination of imidazol(in)ium salts takes place readily in the presence of Cs2CO3. The procedure is very easy to implement and provides facile and straightforward access to a wealth of C2-substituted azolium salts. Furthermore, a C2α alkylation is also feasible, which extends the chemistry of NHCs and weak bases to their NHO analogues.

π-Extension of Indoles Using Acrolein Linker: Synthesis of Indolo[3,2-a]carbazole-6-carbaldehydes and Racemosin B

A simple method for the synthesis of indolo[3,2-a]carbazole-6-carbaldehydes by the π-extension of indoles with acrolein is reported. The scope of the method is demonstrated with 33 examples. The products exhibit high activities toward advanced synthesis and are proved to be able to produce valuable chemicals, such as natural products, dyes, and organic fluorescent materials. In addition, the alkaloid racemosin B can be prepared by this method in two steps in ∼50% overall yield.

Desulfurization of diesel via joint adsorption and extraction using a porous liquid derived from ZIF-8 and a phosphonium-type ionic liquid

A type-III porous liquid based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and an ionic liquid trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([THTDP][BTI]) was synthesized and used for the desulfurization of model diesel. The desulfurization effect by ZIF-8/[THTDP][BTI] combined both the adsorptive desulfurization by ZIF-8 and the extraction desulfurization by [THTDP][BTI]. The removal of the three chosen aromatic organic sulfides by the ZIF-8/[THTDP][BTI] porous liquid followed the order of dibenzothiophene (73.1%) > benzothiophene (70.0%) > thiophene (61.5%). It was further found that deep desulfurization could be realized by ZIF-8/[THTDP][BTI] through triple desulfurization cycles and ZIF-8/[THTDP][BTI] can be regenerated readily. The desulfurization mechanism was explored further in detail by conformation search and density functional theory calculations. Calculations supported that the large molecular volume of [THTDP][BTI] excluded itself from the cavities of ZIF-8, making the pores of ZIF-8 in the porous liquid unoccupied and accessible by other guest species, here the studied organic sulfides. These calculations indicate that the van der Waals interactions were the main interactions between ZIF-8/[THTDP][BTI] and specifically benzothiophene. This work supports that the porous liquid ZIF-8/[THTDP][BTI] could potentially be used for desulfurization of diesel in industry.

Self-Assembling Polymers with p-Aminosalicylate Anions Supported by Encapsulation of p-Aminosalicylate for the Improvement of Drug Content and Release Efficiency

Bioactive linear choline-based copolymers were developed as micellar carriers for drug delivery systems (DDSs). The polymethacrylates containing trimethylammonium groups with p-aminosalicylate anions (PAS-based copolymers: series 1) or chloride anions (Cl-based copolymers: series 2) differing in ionic content and chain length were selected for drug loading. The diverse structures of amphiphilic copolymers made it possible to adjust the encapsulation efficiency of a well-known antibiotic, i.e., p-aminosalicylate in the form of sodium salt (PASNa) or acid (PASA), providing single drug systems. Goniometry was applied to verify the self-assembly capacity of the copolymers using the critical micelle concentration (CMC = 0.03-0.18 mg/mL) and the hydrophilicity level quantifying the surface wettability of polymer film using the water contact angle (WCA = 30-53°). Both parameters were regulated by the copolymer composition, indicating that the increase in ionic content caused higher CMC and lower WCA, but the latter was also modified to a less hydrophilic surface by drug encapsulation. The drug content (DC) in the PAS-based polymers was increased twice by encapsulation of PASNa and PASA (47-96% and 86-104%), whereas in the chloride-based polymer systems, the drug was loaded in 43-96% and 73-100%, respectively. Efficient drug release was detected for PASNa (80-100% series 1; 50-100% series 2) and PASA as complete in both series. The strategy of loading extra drug by encapsulation, which enhances the drug content in the copolymers containing anions of the same pharmaceutics, provided promising characteristics, which highlight the potential of PAS-loaded micellar copolymers for drug delivery.

Triazine diphosphonium tetrachloroferrate ionic liquid immobilized on functionalized halloysite nanotubes as an efficient and reusable catalyst for the synthesis of mono-, bis- and tris-benzothiazoles

Aminopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diphosphonium tetrachloroferrate immobilized on halloysite nanotubes [(APTDP)(FeCl4)2@HNT] was prepared and fully characterized using different techniques such as FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), SEM/EDX, elemental mapping, TEM, ICP-OES, and elemental analysis (EA). This nanocatalyst was found to be highly effective for synthesis of various benzothiazole derivatives in excellent yields under solvent-free conditions. Furthermore, bis- and tris-benzothiazoles were smoothly synthesized from dinitrile and trinitrile in the presence of this catalytic system. High yields and purity, easy work up procedure, high catalytic activity (high TON and TOF) and easy recovery and reusability of the catalyst make this method a useful and important addition to the present methodologies for preparation of these vital heterocyclic compounds.

Integrating Enrichment, Reduction, and Oxidation Sites in One System for Artificial Photosynthetic Diluted CO2 Reduction

Artificial photosynthetic diluted CO2 reduction directly driven by natural sunlight is a challenging, but promising way to realize carbon-resources recycling utilization. Herein, a three-in-one photocatalytic system of CO2 enrichment, CO2 reduction and H2 O oxidation sites is designed for diluted CO2 reduction. A Zn-Salen-based covalent organic framework (Zn-S-COF) with oxidation and reductive sites is synthesized; then, ionic liquids (ILs) are loaded into the pores. As a result, [Emim]BF4 @Zn-S-COF shows a visible-light-driven CO2 -to-CO conversion rate of 105.88 µmol g-1 h-1 under diluted CO2 (15%) atmosphere, even superior than most photocatalysts in high concentrations CO2 . Moreover, natural sunlight driven diluted CO2 reduction rate also reaches 126.51 µmol g-1 in 5 h. Further experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the triazine ring in the Zn-S-COF promotes the activity of H2 O oxidation and CO2 reduction sites, and the loaded ILs provide an enriched CO2 atmosphere, realizing the efficient photocatalytic activity in diluted CO2 reduction.

Effects of ionic liquids on biomembranes: A review on recent biophysical studies

Ionic liquids (ILs) have been emerged as a versatile class of compounds that can be easily tuned to achieve desirable properties for various applications. The ability of ILs to interact with biomembranes has attracted significant interest, as they have been shown to modulate membrane properties in ways that may have implications for various biological processes. This review provides an overview of recent studies that have investigated the interaction between ILs and biomembranes. We discuss the effects of ILs on the physical and chemical properties of biomembranes, including changes in membrane fluidity, permeability, and stability. We also explore the mechanisms underlying the interaction of ILs with biomembranes, such as electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. Additionally, we discuss the future prospects of this field.

The cohesive properties and pyrolysis mechanism of an aprotic ionic liquid tetrabutylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide

As the cohesive properties (such as the enthalpy of sublimation) of solid organic salts (or ionic liquids, ILs) are unmeasurable, a method of their indirect determination is proposed in this paper. For this purpose, the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC) were carried out over a wide range of temperatures. In this study, the mathematical relationship of the thermodynamic properties between the liquid and solid phases of ILs is established using the Born-Fajans-Haber cycle, in which the sum of the vaporization enthalpy of ILs, melting enthalpy and the enthalpy of solid-solid phase transition is regarded as the sublimation enthalpy of solid organic salts. With this method, the cohesive properties of tetrabutylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([N4444][NTf2]), which is an aprotic IL, were successfully obtained. Additionally, the difference between the lattice energy and the cohesive energy was employed to quantitatively calculate the charge separation distance of single ion pair (r12) in the gas phase of ionic liquids for the first time, which can serve as a standard methodology to measure the closeness in distance between the anion and the cation in a gas phase ion pair. The pyrolysis mechanism of [N4444][NTf2] was also explored.

New class of RSO2-NHC ligands and Pd/RSO2-NHC complexes with tailored electronic properties and high performance in catalytic C-C and C-N bonds formation

Imidazolium salts have found ubiquitous applications as N-heterocyclic carbene precursors and metal nanoparticle stabilizers in catalysis and metallodrug research. Substituents directly attached to the imidazole ring can have a significant influence on the electronic, steric, and other properties of NHC-proligands as well as their metal complexes. In the present study, for the first time, a new type of Pd/NHC complex with the RSO2 group directly attached to the imidazol-2-ylidene ligand core was designed and synthesized. The electronic properties as well as structural features of the new ligands were evaluated by means of experimental and computational methods. Interestingly, the introduction of a 4-aryl(alkyl)sulfonyl group only slightly decreased the electron donation, but it significantly increased the π-acceptance and slightly enhanced the buried volume (%Vbur) of new imidazol-2-ylidenes. New Pd/NHC complexes were obtained through selective C(2)H-palladation of some of the synthesized 4-RSO2-functionalized imidazolium salts under mild conditions. Several complexes demonstrated good activity in the catalysis of model cross-coupling reactions, outperforming the activity of similar complexes with non-substituted NHC ligands.

Condensable Gases Capture with Ionic Liquids

Condensable gases are the sum of condensable and volatile steam or organic compounds, including water vapor, which are discharged into the atmosphere in gaseous form at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Condensable toxic and harmful gases emitted from petrochemical, chemical, packaging and printing, industrial coatings, and mineral mining activities seriously pollute the atmospheric environment and endanger human health. Meanwhile, these gases are necessary chemical raw materials; therefore, developing green and efficient capture technology is significant for efficiently utilizing condensed gas resources. To overcome the problems of pollution and corrosion existing in traditional organic solvent and alkali absorption methods, ionic liquids (ILs), known as "liquid molecular sieves", have received unprecedented attention thanks to their excellent separation and regeneration performance and have gradually become green solvents used by scholars to replace traditional absorbents. This work reviews the research progress of ILs in separating condensate gas. As the basis of chemical engineering, this review first provides a detailed discussion of the origin of predictive molecular thermodynamics and its broad application in theory and industry. Afterward, this review focuses on the latest research results of ILs in the capture of several important typical condensable gases, including water vapor, aromatic VOCs (i.e., BTEX), chlorinated VOC, fluorinated refrigerant gas, low-carbon alcohols, ketones, ethers, ester vapors, etc. Using pure IL, mixed ILs, and IL + organic solvent mixtures as absorbents also briefly expanded the related reports of porous materials loaded with an IL as adsorbents. Finally, future development and research directions in this exciting field are remarked.

Uniformly Dispersed Sb-Nanodot Constructed by In Situ Confined Polymerization of Ionic Liquids for High-Performance Potassium-Ion Batteries

Antimony (Sb) is a potential candidate anode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity. However; in the process of potassium alloying reaction; the huge volume expansion (about 407%) leads to pulverization of active substance as well as loss of electrical contact resulting in rapidly declining capacity. Herein; uniformly dispersed Sb-Nanodot in carbon frameworks (Sb-ND@C) were constructed by in situ confined polymerization of ionic liquids. Attributed to the uniformly dispersed Sb-ND and confinement effect of carbon frameworks; as anode for PIBs; Sb-ND@C delivered a superior rate capability (320.1 mA h g^-1 at 5 A g^-1) and an outstanding cycling stability (486 mA h g^-1 after 1000 cycles; achieving 89.8% capacity retention). This work offers a facile route to prepare highly dispersed metal-Nanodot via the in situ polymerization of ionic liquid for high-performance metal-ion batteries.

Ionic Liquids Facilitate the Dispersion of Branched Polyethylenimine Grafted ZIF-8 for Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been previously shown as an emerging modified class of epoxy resin. In this work, we report a simple strategy for preventing zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles from agglomerating in epoxy resin (EP). Branched polyethylenimine grafted ZIF-8 in ionic liquid (BPEI-ZIF-8) nanofluid with good dispersion was prepared successfully using an ionic liquid as both the dispersant and curing agent. Results indicated that the thermogravimetric curve of the composite material had no noticeable change with increasing BPEI-ZIF-8/IL content. The glass transition temperature (T_g) of the epoxy composite was reduced with the addition of BPEI-ZIF-8/IL. The addition of 2 wt% BPEI-ZIF-8/IL into EP effectively improved the flexural strength to about 21.7%, and the inclusion of 0.5 wt% of BPEI-ZIF-8/IL EP composites increased the impact strength by about 83% compared to pure EP. The effect of adding BPEI-ZIF-8/IL on the T_g of epoxy resin was explored, and its toughening mechanism was analyzed in combination with SEM images showing fractures in the EP composites. Moreover, the damping and dielectric properties of the composites were improved by adding BPEI-ZIF-8/IL.

Electrocatalyst Microenvironment Engineering for Enhanced Product Selectivity in Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen Reduction Reactions

Carbon and nitrogen fixation strategies are regarded as alternative routes to produce valuable chemicals used as energy carriers and fertilizers that are traditionally obtained from unsustainable and energy-intensive coal gasification (CO and CH₄), Fischer-Tropsch (C₂H₄), and Haber-Bosch (NH₃) processes. Recently, the electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) and N₂ reduction reaction (NRR) have received tremendous attention, with the merits of being both efficient strategies to store renewable electricity while providing alternative preparation routes to fossil-fuel-driven reactions. To date, the development of the CO₂RR and NRR processes is primarily hindered by the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); however, the corresponding strategies for inhibiting this undesired side reaction are still quite limited. Considering such complex reactions involve three gas-liquid-solid phases and successive proton-coupled electron transfers, it appears meaningful to review the current strategies for improving product selectivity in light of their respective reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and thermodynamics. By examining the developments and understanding in catalyst design, electrolyte engineering, and three-phase interface modulation, we discuss three key strategies for improving product selectivity for the CO₂RR and NRR: (i) targeting molecularly defined active sites, (ii) increasing the local reactant concentration at the active sites, and (iii) stabilizing and confining product intermediates.

Fabrication of Swellable Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Polymers for CO2-Assisted Hydration of Propylene Epoxide

Swelling is a very common phenomenon in organic substances. However, the swelling behaviors of inorganic substances had rarely been reported. In this study, a new type of swellable organic-inorganic hybrid polymer (PIL@CHT) was designed and successfully synthesized through free-radical copolymerization of polymerizable phosphonium ionic liquid monomer and vinyl-functionalized hydrotalcite (CHT). The swelling behaviors of PIL@CHT in various solvents with a wide range of Hansen solubility parameters (δ_T) were investigated, and PIL@CHT exhibited excellent swellable capacity in the solvents with δ_T > 24.4 MPa^1/2. The swollen state of the hybrid PIL@CHT in water presented a network structure with a diameter of approximately 8-12 μm, and CHT particles were well dispersed to the channel of PIL. PIL@CHT was applied to catalyze the CO₂-assisted hydration of propylene oxide (PO), in which a cascade reaction including the cycloaddition of CO₂ and PO and the subsequent hydrolysis of propylene carbonate (PC) occurred. PIL@CHT, combining the active sites of PIL and CHT, synergistically catalyzed this cascade reaction and achieved a high yield (93.0%) and selectivity (98.2%) of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-MPG) under a low H₂O/PO ratio of 1.5/1. Moreover, the catalyst could be recycled seven times without any significant loss of catalytic activities and had good substrate generality.

Progress and prospects of biopolymers production strategies

In recent decades, biopolymers have garnered significant attention owing to their aptitude as an environmentally approachable precursor for an extensive application. In addition, due to their alluring assets and widespread use, biopolymers have made significant strides in their production based on various sources and forms. This review focuses on the most recent improvements and breakthroughs that have been made in the manufacturing of biopolymers, via sections focusing the most frequented and preferred routes like micro-macro, algae apart from focusing on microbials routes with special attention to bacteria and the synthetic biology avenue of biopolymer production. For ensuring the continued growth of the global polymer industry, promising research trends must be pursued, as well as methods for overcoming obstacles that arise in exploiting the beneficial properties exhibited by a variety of biopolymers.

Noble Metals Dissolution Catalyzed by [AlCl4 -]-Based Ionic Liquids

Imidazolium-based ionic liquid mixtures with [NO₃]^- and [AlCl₄]^- anions were used as oxidizing agents for the dissolution of Au, Pd, and Pt metals under mild conditions. The thermodynamic reduction of [NO₃]^- to [NO] is catalyzed by [AlCl₄]^- anions and coupled with the oxidation process of noble metals. The developed ionic liquid system for dissolving Au can reactivate the Au⁰ formed in the deactivation process of the catalyst in vinyl chloride production. This demonstrates the relevance of the here-presented work for technical noble metal recycling.

Shear-induced phase transition in the aqueous solution of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid

An ionic liquid (IL) is a salt in the liquid state that consists of a cation and an anion, one of which possesses an organic component. Because of their non-volatile property, these solvents have a high recovery rate, and, hence, they are considered as environment-friendly green solvents. It is necessary to study the detailed physicochemical properties of these liquids for designing and processing techniques and find suitable operating conditions for IL-based systems. In the present work, the flow behavior of aqueous solutions of an imidazolium-based IL, 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium chloride, is investigated, where the dynamic viscosity measurements indicate non-Newtonian shear thickening behavior in the solutions. Polarizing optical microscopy shows that the pristine samples are isotropic and transform into anisotropic after shear. These shear thickened liquid crystalline samples change into an isotropic phase upon heating, which is quantified by the differential scanning calorimetry. The small angle x-ray scattering study revealed that the pristine isotropic cubic phase of spherical micelles distort into non-spherical micelles. This has provided the detailed structural evolution of mesoscopic aggregates of the IL in an aqueous solution and the corresponding viscoelastic property of the solution.

Insights into the Absorption of Hydrocarbon Gases in Phosphorus-Containing Ionic Liquids

The solubility of ethane, ethylene, propane, and propylene was measured in two phosphorus-containing ionic liquids, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinate, [P_6,6,6,14][DiOP], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethylphosphate, [C₄C₁Im][DMP], using an isochoric saturation method. The ionic liquid [C₄C₁Im][DMP] absorbed between 1 and 20 molecules of gas per 1000 ion pairs, at 313 K and 0.1 MPa, while [P_6,6,6,14][DiOP] absorbed up to 169 molecules of propane per 1000 ion pairs under the same conditions. [C₄C₁Im][DMP] had a higher capacity to absorb olefins than paraffins, while the opposite was true for [P_6,6,6,14][DiOP], with the former being slightly more selective than the later. From the analysis of the thermodynamic properties of solvation, we concluded that in both ionic liquids and for all of the studied gases the solvation is ruled by the entropy, even if its contribution is unfavorable. These results, together with density measurements, 2D NMR studies, and self-diffusion coefficients suggest that the gases' solubility is ruled mostly by nonspecific interactions with the ionic liquids and that the looser ion packing in [P_6,6,6,14][DiOP] makes it easier to accommodate the gases compared to [C₄C₁Im][DMP].

Betaine- and L-Carnitine-Based Ionic Liquids as Solubilising and Stabilising Agents for the Formulation of Antimicrobial Eye Drops Containing Diacerein

The therapeutic efficacy of topically administered drugs, however powerful, is largely affected by their bioavailability and, thus, ultimately, on their aqueous solubility and stability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of ionic liquids (ILs) as functional excipients to solubilise, stabilise, and prolong the ocular residence time of diacerein (DIA) in eye drop formulations. DIA is a poorly soluble and unstable anthraquinone prodrug, rapidly hydrolysed to rhein (Rhe), for the treatment of osteoarthritis. DIA has recently been evaluated as an antimicrobial agent for bacterial keratitis. Two ILs based on natural zwitterionic compounds were investigated: L-carnitine C6 alkyl ester bromide (Carn6), and betaine C6 alkyl ester bromide (Bet6). The stabilising, solubilising, and mucoadhesive properties of ILs were investigated, as well as their cytotoxicity to the murine fibroblast BALB/3T3 clone A31 cell line. Two IL-DIA-based eye drop formulations were prepared, and their efficacy against both Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was determined. Finally, the eye drops were administered in vivo on New Zealand albino rabbits, testing their tolerability as well as their elimination and degradation kinetics. Both Bet6 and Carn6 have good potential as functional excipients, showing solubilising, stabilising, mucoadhesive, and antimicrobial properties; their in vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo ocular tolerability pave the way for their future use in ophthalmic applications.

Rhodobacter sphaeroides as a model to study the ecotoxicity of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide

The purple non-sulfur bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides was selected as a biological model to investigate its response to the toxicity of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C_nmim]Br), a type of ionic liquid (IL), with different alkyl chain lengths (n describes the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain). The inhibition of bacterial growth by [C_nmim]Br was positively correlated with n. Morphological characterization revealed that [C_nmim]Br caused cell membrane perforation. The signal amplitude of the electrochromic absorption band shift of endogenous carotenoids showed a negatively linear correlation with n, and the amplitude of the blue-shift of the B850 band in light-harvesting complex 2 showed a positively linear correlation with n. Furthermore, an increase in blocked ATP synthesis and increase in antioxidant enzyme activity were observed in chromatophores treated with ILs containing longer alkyl chains. In summary, the purple bacterium can be developed as a model to monitor ecotoxicity and examine the mechanism of IL toxicity.
