Effects of Wind Speed on Size-Dependent Morphology and Composition of Sea Spray Aerosols

Variable wind speeds over the ocean can have a significant impact on the formation mechanism and physical-chemical properties of sea spray aerosols (SSA), which in turn influence their climate-relevant impacts. Herein, for the first time, we investigate the effects of wind speed on size-dependent morphology and composition of individual nascent SSA generated from wind-wave interactions of natural seawater within a wind-wave channel as a function of size and their particle-to-particle variability. Filter-based thermal optical analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), AFM infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed in this regard. This study focuses on SSA with sizes within 0.04-1.8 μm generated at two wind speeds: 10 m/s, representing a wind lull scenario over the ocean, and 19 m/s, indicative of the wind speeds encountered in stormy conditions. Filter-based measurements revealed a reduction of the organic mass fraction as the wind speed increases. AFM imaging at 20% relative humidity of individual SSA identified six main morphologies: prism-like, rounded, core-shell, rod, rod inclusion core-shell, and aggregates. At 10 m/s, most SSA were rounded, while at 19 m/s, core-shells became predominant. Based on AFM-IR, rounded SSA at both wind speeds had similar composition, mainly composed of aliphatic and oxygenated species, whereas the shells of core-shells displayed more oxygenated organics at 19 m/s and more aliphatic organics at 10 m/s. Collectively, our observations can be attributed to the disruption of the sea surface microlayer film structure at higher wind speeds. The findings reveal a significant impact of wind speed on morphology and composition of SSA, which should be accounted for accurate assessment of their climate effects.

Advances in the Separation and Detection of Secondary Organic Aerosol Produced by Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) in Laboratory-Generated and Ambient Aerosol

Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), a common ingredient in many personal care products (PCPs), undergoes oxidation in the atmosphere, leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Yet, the specific contributions of D5-derived SOA on ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have not been characterized. This study addresses this knowledge gap by introducing a new analytical method to advance the molecular characterization of oxidized D5 and its detection in ambient aerosol. The newly developed reversed phase liquid chromatography method, in conjunction with high-resolution mass spectrometry, separates and detects D5 oxidation products, enabling new insights into their molecular and isomeric composition. Application of this method to laboratory-generated SOA and urban PM2.5 in New York City expands the number of D5 oxidation products observed in ambient aerosol and informs a list of molecular candidates to track D5-derived SOA in the atmosphere. An oxidation series was observed in which one or more methyl groups in D5 (C10H30O5Si5) is replaced by a hydroxyl group, which indicates the presence of multistep oxidation products in ambient PM2.5. Because of their specificity to PCPs and demonstrated detectability in ambient PM2.5, several oxidation products are proposed as molecular tracers for D5-derived SOA and may prove useful in assessing the impact of PCPs-derived SOA in the atmosphere.

The Measurement of Atmospheric Black Carbon: A Review

Black Carbon (BC), the second-largest contributor to global warming, has detrimental effects on human health and the environment. However, the accurate quantification of BC poses a significant challenge, impeding the comprehensive assessment of its impacts. Therefore, this paper aims to critically review three quantitative methods for measuring BC: Thermal Optical Analysis (TOA), the Optical Method, and Laser-Induced Incandescence (LII). The determination principles, available commercial instruments, sources of deviation, and correction approaches associated with these techniques are systematically discussed. By synthesizing and comparing the quantitative results reported in previous studies, this paper aims to elucidate the underlying relationships and fundamental disparities among Elemental Carbon (EC), Equivalent Black Carbon (eBC), and Refractory Black Carbon (rBC). Finally, based on the current advancements in BC quantification, recommendations are proposed to guide future research directions.

Application of an Ultra-Low-Cost Passive Sampler for Light-Absorbing Carbon in Mongolia

Low-cost, long-term measures of air pollution concentrations are often needed for epidemiological studies and policy analyses of household air pollution. The Washington passive sampler (WPS), an ultra-low-cost method for measuring the long-term average levels of light-absorbing carbon (LAC) air pollution, uses digital images to measure the changes in the reflectance of a passively exposed paper filter. A prior publication on WPS reported high precision and reproducibility. Here, we deployed three methods to each of 10 households in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: one PurpleAir for PM2.5; two ultrasonic personal aerosol samplers (UPAS) with quartz filters for the thermal-optical analysis of elemental carbon (EC); and two WPS for LAC. We compared multiple rounds of 4-week-average measurements. The analyses calibrating the LAC to the elemental carbon measurement suggest that 1 µg of EC/m3 corresponds to 62 PI/month (R2 = 0.83). The EC-LAC calibration curve indicates an accuracy (root-mean-square error) of 3.1 µg of EC/m3, or ~21% of the average elemental carbon concentration. The RMSE values observed here for the WPS are comparable to the reported accuracy levels for other methods, including reference methods. Based on the precision and accuracy results shown here, as well as the increased simplicity of deployment, the WPS may merit further consideration for studying air quality in homes that use solid fuels.

Wintertime Air Quality across the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal: Concentration, Composition, and Sources of Fine and Coarse Particulate Matter

The Kathmandu Valley in Nepal experiences poor air quality, especially in the dry winter season. In this study, we investigated the concentration, chemical composition, and sources of fine and coarse particulate matter (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and PM_10-2.5) at three sites within or near the Kathmandu Valley during the winter of 2018 as part of the second Nepal Ambient Monitoring and Source Testing Experiment (NAMaSTE 2). Daily PM_2.5 concentrations were very high throughout the study period, ranging 72-149 μg m^-3 at the urban Ratnapark site in Kathmandu, 88-161 μg m^-3 at the suburban Lalitpur site, and 40-74 μg m^-3 at rural Dhulikhel on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Meanwhile, PM₁₀ ranged 194-309, 174-377, and 64-131 μg m^-3, respectively. At the Ratnapark site, crustal materials from resuspended soil contributed an average of 11% of PM_2.5 and 34% of PM₁₀. PM_2.5 was largely comprised of organic carbon (OC, 28-30% by mass) and elemental carbon (EC, 10-14% by mass). As determined by chemical mass balance source apportionment modeling, major PM_2.5 OC sources were garbage burning (15-21%), biomass burning (10-17%), and fossil fuel (14-26%). Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) contributions from aromatic volatile organic compounds (13-23% OC) were larger than those from isoprene (0.3-0.5%), monoterpenes (0.9-1.4%), and sesquiterpenes (3.6-4.4%). Nitro-monoaromatic compounds-of interest due to their light-absorbing properties and toxicity-indicate the presence of biomass burning-derived SOA. Knowledge of primary and secondary PM sources can facilitate air quality management in this region.

Effects of Atmospheric Aging Processes on Nascent Sea Spray Aerosol Physicochemical Properties

The effects of atmospheric aging on single-particle nascent sea spray aerosol (nSSA) physicochemical properties, such as morphology, composition, phase state, and water uptake, are important to understanding their impacts on the Earth's climate. The present study investigates these properties by focusing on the aged SSA (size range of 0.1-0.6 μm) and comparing with a similar size range nSSA, both generated at a peak of a phytoplankton bloom during a mesocosm study. The aged SSAs were generated by exposing nSSA to OH radicals with exposures equivalent to 4-5 days of atmospheric aging. Complementary filter-based thermal optical analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and AFM photothermal infrared spectroscopy were utilized. Both nSSA and aged SSA showed an increase in the organic mass fraction with decreasing particle sizes. In addition, aging results in a further increase of the organic mass fraction, which can be attributed to new particle formation and oxidation of volatile organic compounds followed by condensation on pre-existing particles. The results are consistent with single-particle measurements that showed a relative increase in the abundance of aged SSA core-shells with significantly higher organic coating thickness, relative to nSSA. Increased hygroscopicity was observed for aged SSA core-shells, which had more oxygenated organic species. Rounded nSSA and aged SSA had similar hygroscopicity and no apparent changes in the composition. The observed changes in aged SSA physicochemical properties showed a significant size-dependence and particle-to-particle variability. Overall, results showed that the atmospheric aging can significantly influence the nSSA physicochemical properties, thus altering the SSA effects on the climate.

Quantifying residual elemental carbon by thermal-optical analysis using an extended IMPROVE_A protocol with higher maximum temperature

Thermal-optical analysis (TOA) has long been used to quantify organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) on quartz-fiber filter samples collected in national ambient air monitoring networks. In the routine analysis of samples from the Chemical Speciation Network (CSN), we observed a considerable fraction of filter punches that remain gray or black in color after TOA was completed, suggesting the presence of EC that was not fully evolved at the highest temperature specified by the IMPROVE_A protocol (840°C). In this work, we explored the operational conditions necessary to evolve and quantify such residual EC. First, four heavily loaded CSN samples were analyzed to evaluate modifications to the IMPROVE_A protocol. We found that adding a higher temperature step at 930°C more effectively evolved the residual EC than did lengthening the duration of the 840°C step. Compared with the standard IMPROVE_A results, the modified protocol evolved additional EC of 1.08 to 4.45 µg cm^-2 in mass, or 0.12 to 0.50 µg m^-3 in concentration. This excess EC accounts for 27.1% to 45.3% of the total EC and 7.6% to 25.1% of the total carbon by standard IMPROVE_A. We then analyzed over 2600 samples from CSN using the extended IMPROVE_A protocol with higher maximum temperature (930°C). A total of 168 samples (6.4% of the total samples analyzed) contained measurable EC at the 930°C step. The average fraction of the evolvable residual EC mass in total EC is 5.7%, and up to 28% for samples with high total EC mass loading (i.e., 95th percentile and above).Implications: Our results suggest that CSN EC measured by the standard IMPROVE_A protocol should be considered a lower limit, and that a higher maximum heating temperature can be used to better quantify EC from CSN sites impacted by fresh urban emissions.

The interaction between black carbon and planetary boundary layer in the Yangtze River Delta from 2015 to 2020: Why O3 didn't decline so significantly as PM2.5

Since the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (air clean plan) issued in 2013, air quality has been in continuous improvement. The second stage of air clean plan since 2018 was focused on O₃ controlling, but it still didn't decline so significantly as PM_2.5. This study conducted a long-term observation on black carbon (BC) and utilized the observational data of other air pollutants (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO and O₃), the meteorological elements and the vertical sounding data of PBL in Nanjing. In the daytime (08:00-20:00), PM_2.5 kept decreasing from 2015 to 2020 at the rate of 4.8 μg⋅m^-3⋅a^-1, however, BC increased at the rate of 0.6 μg⋅m^-3⋅a^-1, which has led to the continuous growth of BC/PM_2.5 (0.9%⋅a^-1). However, during this period, O₃ was relatively stable and, in 2020, it returned below its value in 2015 after slight increases in 2017 and 2018. Meanwhile, the average surface temperature had increased by around 1.0 °C during 2015-2019 at the rate of 0.3 °C⋅a^-1. Also, the average height of the inversion layer had increased significantly by 494.0 and 176.7 m at 20:00 and 08:00, whose growth ratio was up to 57% and 25%, respectively. The above observation results have formed a set of chain reactions as follows. The growth of the surface BC caused the surface temperature to rise due to the increasing heating effect of BC. The continuous growth of the surface temperature made it easier for the PBL height to develop, which led to the lift of the inversion layer in the PBL and the larger atmospheric environment capacity. Ultimately, it is conducive to the diffusion of the near surface pollutants, thus helping reduce their concentrations, which offsets the increasing tendency of O₃ and add to the decreasing trend of PM_2.5. This phenomenon is the most remarkable in summer, with the fastest increasing rate of temperature (0.8 °C⋅a^-1) and O₃ (3.9 μg⋅m^-3⋅a^-1) during 2015-2019 (excluding 2020 to erase the great effect of COVID-19 lockdown on emissions).

Plastic Burning Impacts on Atmospheric Fine Particulate Matter at Urban and Rural Sites in the USA and Bangladesh

To better understand the impact of plastic burning on atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), we evaluated two methods for the quantification of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene (TPB), a molecular tracer of plastic burning. Compared to traditional solvent-extraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) techniques, thermal-desorption (TD) GCMS provided higher throughput, lower limits of detection, more precise spike recoveries, a wider linear quantification range, and reduced solvent use. This method enabled quantification of TPB in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples collected at rural and urban sites in the USA and Bangladesh. These analyses demonstrated a measurable impact of plastic burning at 5 of the 6 study locations, with the largest absolute and relative TPB concentrations occurring in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where plastic burning is expected to be a significant source of PM_2.5. Background-level contributions of plastic burning in the USA were estimated to be 0.004-0.03 μg m^-3 of PM_2.5 mass. Across the four sites in the USA, the lower estimate of plastic burning contributions to PM_2.5 ranged 0.04-0.8%, while the median estimate ranged 0.3-3% (save for Atlanta, Georgia, in the wintertime at 2-7%). The results demonstrate a consistent presence of plastic burning emissions in ambient PM_2.5 across urban and rural sites in the USA, with a relatively small impact in comparison to other anthropogenic combustion sources in most cases. Much higher TPB concentrations were observed in Dhaka, with estimated plastic burning impacts on PM_2.5 ranging from a lower estimate of 0.3-1.8 μg m^-3 (0.6-2% of PM_2.5) and the median estimate ranging 2-35 μg m^-3 (5-15% of PM_2.5). The methodological advances and new measurements presented herein help to assess the air quality impacts of burning plastic more broadly.

Insights into aerosol chemical composition and optical properties at Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (2862 m asl) during two contrasting seasons

Continental outflows from peninsular Southeast Asia and East Asia dominate the widespread dispersal of air pollutants over subtropical western North Pacific during spring and autumn, respectively. This study analyses the chemical composition and optical properties of PM₁₀ aerosols during autumn and spring at a representative high-altitude site, viz., Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (23.47°N, 120.87°E; 2862 m a.s.l.), Taiwan. PM₁₀ mass was reconstructed and the contributions of major chemical components were also delineated. Aerosol scattering (σ_sp) and absorption (σ_ap) coefficients were regressed on mass densities of major chemical components by assuming external mixing between them, and the site-specific mass scattering efficiency (MSE) and mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of individual components for dry conditions were determined. NH₄NO₃ exhibited the highest MSE among all components during both seasons (8.40 and 12.58 m² g^-1 at 550 nm in autumn and spring, respectively). (NH₄)₂SO₄ and organic matter (OM) accounted for the highest σ_sp during autumn (51%) and spring (50%), respectively. Mean MAE (mean contribution to σ_ap) of elemental carbon (EC) at 550 nm was 2.51 m² g^-1 (36%) and 7.30 m² g^-1 (61%) in autumn and spring, respectively. Likewise, the mean MAE (mean contribution to σ_ap) of organic carbon (OC) at 550 nm was 0.84 m² g^-1 (64%) and 0.83 m² g^-1 (39%) in autumn and spring, respectively. However, a classification matrix, based on scattering Ångström exponent, absorption Ångström exponent, and single scattering albedo (ω), demonstrated that the composite absorbing aerosols were EC-dominated (with weak absorption; ω = 0.91-0.95) in autumn and a combination of EC-dominated and EC/OC mixture (with moderate absorption; ω = 0.85-0.92) in spring. This study demonstrates a strong link between chemical composition and optical properties of aerosol and provides essential information for model simulations to assess the imbalance in regional radiation budget with better accuracy over the western North Pacific.

Source attribution of black and Brown carbon near-UV light absorption in Beijing, China and the impact of regional air-mass transport

Black and Brown Carbon (BC, BrC) are key parameters of climate forcing, yet significant challenges exist assigning emission source contributions to light-absorption by carbonaceous aerosols. Additionally, BC and BrC emissions add to extreme air pollution events in Chinese mega-cities, which harm human health and detract from the natural and built environment. To address these concerns, the ability to estimate atmospheric light absorption related to emission sources and global inventories is a highly valuable tool for climate modelers and policy makers. Three months of BC and BrC data was collected using an Aethalometer in parallel to PM_2.5 filter sampling during a stringent emission controls period and post controls period, including during the regional heating season. In this study reconstructed 370 nm wavelength absorption was calculated by applying source specific Mass Absorption Cross-Sections to PMF apportioned EC and OC results. Reconstructed absorption showed good agreement with the ambient measured absorption for both BC and BrC. In Beijing, the major contributor to near-UV absorption was mobile sources, which accounted for 45-54% of absorption by BC and 14-18% by BrC. BrC absorption from secondary aerosols, biomass burning, and soil dust was also estimated, with these sources contributing from 1 to 9% individually. Meteorological cluster analysis showed that air mass origin did not impact the absorption reconstruction and that the highest regional contribution to near-UV light absorption originated primarily in areas south and east of Beijing. The study shows ambient near-UV light absorption can be predicted using BC and BrC MAC values from sources. However, the current number of multi-wavelength and source specific BrC MAC values reported in the literature is limited. The reconstruction approach allows for a more robust method of assigning light absorption to source categories, allowing the expansion of aethalometer derived BrC apportionment to multiple sources, including biomass burning.

An automated method for thermal-optical separation of aerosol organic/elemental carbon for 13C analysis at the sub-μgC level: A comprehensive assessment

We describe and thoroughly evaluate a method for ¹³C analysis in different fractions of carbonaceous aerosols, especially elemental carbon (EC). This method combines a Sunset thermal-optical analyzer and an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) via a custom-built automated separation, purification, and injection system. Organic carbon (OC), EC, and other specific fractions from aerosol filter samples can be separated and analyzed automatically for ¹³C based on thermal-optical protocols (EUSAAR_2 in this study) at sub-μgC levels. The main challenges in isolating EC for ¹³C analysis are the possible artifacts during OC/EC separation, including the premature loss of EC and the formation of pyrolyzed OC (pOC) that is difficult to separate from EC. Since those artifacts can be accompanied with isotope fractionation, their influence on the stable isotopic composition of EC was comprehensively investigated with various test compounds. The results show that the thermal-optical method is relatively successful in OC/EC separation for ¹³C analysis. The method was further tested on real aerosols samples. For biomass-burning source samples, (partial) inclusion of pOC into EC has negligible influence on the ¹³C signature of EC. However, for ambient samples, the influence of pOC on the ¹³C signature of EC can be significant, if it is not well separated from EC, which is true for many current methods for measuring ¹³C on EC. A case study in Xi'an, China, where pOC is enriched in ¹³C compared to EC, shows that this can lead to an overestimate of coal and an underestimate of traffic emissions in isotope-based source apportionment.

Particulate emissions of real-world light-duty gasoline vehicle fleet in Iran

Fine particulate matter cause profound adverse health effects in Iran. Road traffic is one of the main sources of particulate matter (PM) in urban areas, and has a large contribution in PM_2.5 and organic carbon concentration, in Tehran, Iran. The composition of fine PM vehicle emission is poorly known, so this paper aims to determine the mixed fleet source profile by using the analysed data from the two internal stations and the emission factor for PM light-duty vehicles emission. Tunnels are ideal media for extraction vehicle source profile and emission factor, due to vehicles are the only source of pollutant in the urban tunnels. In this study, PM samples were collected simultaneously in two road tunnel stations and at a background site in Niyayesh tunnel in Tehran, Iran. The tunnel samples show a large contribution for some elements and ions, such as Fe (0.23 μg μg^-1 OC), Al (0.02 μg μg^-1 OC), Ca (0.055 μg μg^-1 OC), SO₄ (0.047 μg μg^-1 OC), Docosane (0.0017 μg μg^-1 OC), Triacontane (0.016 μg μg^-1 OC), Anthracenedione (0.0003 μg μg^-1 OC) and Benzo-perylene (0.0002 μg μg^-1 OC). In overall, on-road gasoline vehicle fleets source profile extracted in this study is similar to composite profiles derived from roadside tunnel measurment performed in other countries during the last decades. The PM_2.5 emission factor for Tehran's light-duty vehicle fleet has been extracted 16.23 mg km^-1. vehicle^-1and 0.09 g kg^-1. The profile would be used for Chemical Mass Balance Model studies for Iran and other countries with a similar road traffic fleet mix. Also, it would be very suitable for use in emission inventories improvement. The results of this study can be used for choosing the best management strategies and provide comperhensive insight to fine PM traffic emission in Tehran.

Pollutants from primary sources dominate the oxidative potential of water-soluble PM2.5 in Hong Kong in terms of dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption and hydroxyl radical production

Increasing scientific findings show that the adverse health effects of PM_2.5 are related not only to its mass but also PM_2.5 sources and chemical compositions. Here, we conducted a comprehensive characterization and source apportionment of oxidative potential (OP) of water-soluble PM_2.5 collected in Hong Kong for one year. Two OP indicators, namely dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption and ∙OH formation, were quantified. Six PM_2.5 sources, i.e. secondary sulfate, biomass burning, secondary organic aerosol (SOA), vehicle emissions, marine vessels, and a metal-related factor, were apportioned and identified to be DTT active. The four primary sources accounted for 83.5% of DTT activity of water-soluble PM_2.5, with the metal-related factor and marine vessels as the leading contributors. However, only three sources, i.e. metal-related factor, vehicle emissions, and SOA, showed ∙OH generation ability, with a predominant contribution of 96.2% from the two primary sources, especially the metal-related factor (84.5%). Based on the source apportionment results, we further evaluate the intrinsic OP of water-soluble PM_2.5 from each source. Marine vessels exhibited the highest intrinsic DTT activity; while metal-related factor was most effective in ∙OH generation.

Carbonaceous Aerosol in Polar Areas: First Results and Improvements of the Sampling Strategies

While more and more studies are being conducted on carbonaceous fractions—organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC)—in urban areas, there are still too few studies about these species and their effects in polar areas due to their very low concentrations; further, studies in the literature report only data from intensive campaigns, limited in time. We present here for the first time EC–OC concentration long-time data records from the sea-level sampling site of Ny-Ålesund, in the High Arctic (5 years), and from Dome C, in the East Antarctic Plateau (1 year). Regarding the Arctic, the median (and the interquartile range (IQR)) mass concentrations for the years 2011–2015 are 352 (IQR: 283–475) ng/m3 for OC and 4.8 (IQR: 4.6–17.4) ng/m3 for EC, which is responsible for only 3% of total carbon (TC). From both the concentration data sets and the variation of the average monthly concentrations, the influence of the Arctic haze on EC and OC concentrations is evident. Summer may be interested by high concentration episodes mainly due to long-range transport (e.g., from wide wildfires in the Northern Hemisphere, as happened in 2015). The average ratio of EC/OC for the summer period is 0.05, ranging from 0.02 to 0.10, and indicates a clean environment with prevailing biogenic (or biomass burning) sources, as well as aged, highly oxidized aerosol from long-range transport. Contribution from ship emission is not evident, but this result may be due to the sampling time resolution. In Antarctica, a 1 year-around data set from December 2016 to February 2018 is shown, which does not present a clear seasonal trend. The OC median (and IQR) value is 78 (64–106) ng/m3; for EC, it is 0.9 (0.6–2.4) ng/m3, weighing for 3% on TC values. The EC/OC ratio mean value is 0.20, with a range of 0.06–0.35. Due to the low EC and OC concentrations in polar areas, correction for the blank is far more important than in campaigns carried out in other regions, largely affecting uncertainties in measured concentrations. Through the years, we have thus developed a new sampling strategy that is presented here for the first time: samplers were modified in order to collect a larger amount of particulates on a small surface, enhancing the capability of the analytical method since the thermo-optical analyzer is sensitive to carbonaceous aerosol areal density. Further, we have recently coupled such modified samplers with a sampling strategy that makes a more reliable blank correction of every single sample possible.

Relating Structure and Ice Nucleation of Mixed Surfactant Systems Relevant to Sea Spray Aerosol

Ice nucleating particles (INPs) influence weather and climate by their effect on cloud phase state. Fatty alcohols present within aerosol particles confer a potentially important source of ice nucleation activity to sea spray aerosol produced in oceanic regions. However, their interactions with other aerosol components and the influence on freezing were previously largely unknown. Here, we report quantitative measurements of fatty alcohols in model sea spray aerosol and examine the relationships between the composition and structure of the surfactants and subphase in the context of these measurements. Deposited mixtures of surfactants retain the ability to nucleate ice, even in fatty acid-dominant compositions. Strong refreezing effects are also observed, where previously frozen water-surfactant samples nucleate more efficiently. Structural sources of refreezing behavior are identified as either kinetically trapped film states or three-dimensional (3D) solid surfactant particles. Salt effects are especially important for surfactant INPs, where high salt concentrations suppress freezing. A simple water uptake model suggests that surfactant-containing aerosol requires either very low salt content or kinetic trapping as solid particles to act as INPs in the atmosphere. These types of INPs could be identified through comparison of different INP instrument responses.

Effects of combustion condition and biomass type on the light absorption of fine organic aerosols from fresh biomass burning emissions over Korea

In this study, the light absorption properties of fine organic aerosols from the burning emissions of four biomass materials were examined using UV-spectrophotometry and Aethalometer-measurements, respectively. For wood chips and palm trees, the burning experiments were carried out with different combustion temperatures (200, 250, and 300 ^οC) in an adjustable, electrically heated combustor. The light absorptions of water and methanol extracts of aerosols, and smoke particles showed strong spectral dependence on the burning emissions of all biomass materials. However, the burning aerosols of wood chips showed stronger absorption than those of the other biomass burning (BB) emissions. For the burning aerosols of wood chips and palm trees, organic carbon/elemental carbon (OC/EC) decreased as the combustion temperature increased from 200 to 300 °C. Absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) values tended to decrease when combustion temperature increased for smoke aerosols and methanol extracts in smoke samples. The mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (MAE₃₆₅, m² g^-1∙C^-1) of water- and methanol-extractable OC fractions was highest in wood chip burning smoke samples. MAE₃₆₅ values of methanol extracts for rice straw, pine needles, wood chips, and palm trees burning emission samples were 1.35, 0.92, 2.36-3.37, and 0.86-1.42, respectively. For wood chip and palm tree burning emissions, AAE_320-430nm values of methanol extracts were strongly correlated with OC/EC (i.e., combustion temperature) with slopes of 0.11 (p < 0.001) and 0.02 (p < 0.001), and R² values of 0.87 and 0.74, respectively. Moreover, a linear regression between MAE₃₆₅ of methanol extractable OC and OC/EC showed slopes of -0.05 (p < 0.001) and -0.004 (p < 0.001) and R² of 0.72 and 0.74, respectively. The results of this study clearly demonstrate that burning condition and biomass type influence the light absorption properties of organic aerosols from BB emissions.

Estimating the Columnar Concentrations of Black Carbon Aerosols in China Using MODIS Products

Black carbon (BC), the strongest light-absorbing particle, is believed to play substantial roles in regional air quality and global climate change. In this study, taking advantage of the high quality of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer products, we developed a new algorithm to estimate the BC columnar concentrations over China by simulating the BC and non-BC aerosol mixing states in detail. The results show that our new algorithm produces a reliable estimation of BC aerosols, in which BC columnar concentrations and their related parameters (aerosol absorption and BC surface concentration) show reasonable agreements and low biases compared with ground-based measurements. The uncertainties of BC retrievals are mainly associated with the surface and aerosol assumptions used in the algorithm, ranging from -14 to 44% at higher aerosol optical depth (AOD > 0.5). The proposed algorithm can improve the capability of space-borne aerosol remote sensing by successfully distinguishing BC from other aerosols. The acquired BC columnar concentrations enable the spatial pattern of serious BC aerosol pollution over East China to be characterized, showing that it exhibits higher levels in winter. These nationwide results are beneficial for estimating BC emissions, proposing mitigation strategies for air pollution, and potentially reducing the uncertainties of climate change studies.

Source apportionment of fine particulate matter in a Middle Eastern Metropolis, Tehran-Iran, using PMF with organic and inorganic markers

With over 8 million inhabitants and 4 million motor vehicles on the streets, Tehran is one of the most crowded and polluted cities in the Middle East. Frequent exceedances of national daily PM_2.5 limit have been reported in this city during the last decade, yet, the chemical composition and sources of fine particles are poorly determined. In the present study, 24-hour PM_2.5 samples were collected at two urban sites during two separate campaigns, a one-year period from 2014 to 2015 and another three-month period at the beginning of 2017. Concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), inorganic ions, trace metals and specific organic molecular markers were measured by chemical analysis of filter samples. The dominant mass components were organic matter (OM), sulfate and EC. With a 20% water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction, the predominance of primary anthropogenic sources (i.e. fossil fuel combustion) was anticipated. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis using the ME-2 (Multilinear Engine-2) solver was then applied to this dataset. 5 factors were identified by Marker-PMF, named as traffic exhaust (TE), biomass burning (BB), industries (Ind.), nitrate-rich and sulfate-rich. Another 4 factors were identified by Metal-PMF, including, dust, vehicles (traffic non-exhaust, TNE), industries (Ind.) and heavy fuel combustion (HFC). Traffic exhaust was the dominant source with 44.5% contribution to total quantified PM_2.5 mass. Sulfate-rich (24.2%) and nitrate-rich (18.4%) factors were the next major contributing sources. Dust (4.4%) and biomass burning (6.7%) also had small contributions while the total share of all other factors was < 2%. Investigating the correlations of different factors between the two sampling sites showed that traffic emissions and biomass burning were local, whereas dust, heavy fuel combustion and industrial sources were regional. Results of this study indicate that gas- and particle-phase pollutants emitted from fossil fuel combustion (mobile and stationary) are the principal origin of both primary and secondary fine aerosols in Tehran.

Inter-comparison of carbon content in PM10 and PM2.5 measured with two thermo-optical protocols on samples collected in a Mediterranean site

Scientific interest is focusing on different approaches for characterising organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and equivalent black carbon (eBC), although EUSAAR2 protocol has been established and frequently used in EU for regulatory purposes. Discrepancies are observed due to thermal protocols used for OC/EC determinations and the effect of the chemical-physical properties of aerosol using optical measurements for eBC. In this work, a long-term inter-comparison of carbon measurements with two widely used protocols (EUSAAR2 and NIOSH870) was performed on PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ samples. The influence of the protocol on the evaluation of secondary organic aerosol (SOC) and on the correlation between EC and eBC was investigated. An extensive check of repeatability gave typical uncertainties of ~ 5% for TC and OC, and ~ 10% for EC for both thermal protocols. Results show that OC is statistically comparable between the two protocols but EC is significantly higher with EUSAAR2, especially during the warm season. The ratio OC/EC is lower with EUSAAR2, also showing a seasonality (lower values in the warm season) not observed with NIOSH870. Despite the differences in OC/EC ratios, the contribution of SOC to OC (~ 50%), evaluated using the EC-tracer method, did not differ significantly between the two protocols and for both size fractions. Further, SOC/OC ratios were comparable in cold and warm periods. eBC/EC ratios larger than one for both protocols were obtained, 1.62 (EUSAAR2) and 1.92 (NIOSH870), and also correlated with the ratio OC/EC for both protocols, especially in the cold season.

Differences in chemical composition of PM2.5 emissions from traditional versus advanced combustion (semi-gasifier) solid fuel stoves

A common strategy to improve indoor air quality in households burning coal and biomass is the introduction of advanced combustion solid fuel stoves, which can use existing fuels yet emit fewer pollutants. Chemical composition of PM is affected by numerous combustion parameters, but is often not considered in energy transitions, despite varying toxicity among chemical components. We analyzed PM_2.5 emissions from combustion of solid fuels (coal, wood, and straw; whole and pelletized) in a variety of stoves (cookstoves and heating stoves; traditional and semi-gasifier, including forced versus natural draft and fixed versus reciprocating grate). To assess the effects of fuel and stove type on PM_2.5 composition, we measured elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), water-soluble OC, water-soluble inorganic ions (e.g. SO₄^2-, Cl^-, K⁺), and organic molecular markers. PM_2.5 emissions from traditional stoves were mostly carbonaceous: 76-90% organic matter (OM), 5-6% EC, and less than 2% inorganic ions. In contrast, semi-gasifier stoves emitted more inorganic PM_2.5: on average, ions comprised 65%, 9% was OM, and 4% was EC. Within the semi-gasifier cookstoves, forced-draft cookstove emissions had lower OM (1-3%) and higher ion concentrations (84-88%) than the natural-draft cookstove (5-14% OM, 30-83% ions). Levoglucosan was detected in PM_2.5 from combustion of wood in the traditional cookstove and biomass pellets in the natural-draft semi-gasifier cookstove, but not from wood pellets in the forced-draft semi-gasifier cookstove. Across a range of different fuels and stoves, stove type influenced emitted PM composition more than fuel type, underscoring the impact of combustion conditions on PM chemical composition.

Estimating contributions of vehicular emissions to PM2.5 in a roadside environment: A multiple approach study

Vehicular emissions (VE) are among the major sources of airborne fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) in urban atmospheres, which adversely impact the environment and public health. Receptor models are widely used for estimating PM_2.5 source contributions from VE (PM_vehicle), but often give inconsistent results due to different modelling principles and assumptions. During December 2015-May 2017, we collected nine-months of hourly organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) data, as well as 24-h PM_2.5 speciation data including major species and organic tracers on select days from an ad hoc roadside site in Hong Kong. The weekday vs. holiday and diurnal variations of EC tracked closely with those of traffic flow volume, indicating EC as a reliable tracer for PM_vehicle in this area. We applied multiple approaches to estimate the PM_vehicle, including the EC-tracer method with the hourly OC-EC data, and chemical mass balance (CMB) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analyses with the filter-based speciation data. Considering source profile variability, CMB gave the lowest PM_vehicle estimate among the three approaches, possibly due to the degradation of organic markers (i.e., hopanes). The PM_vehicle derived from the EC-tracer method and PMF were comparable, accounting for ~12% (3.4-4.0 μg/m³) of PM_2.5 averaged across 20 samples in both approaches, but a larger sample size is needed for a more robust PMF solution. The monthly PM_vehicle derived from the EC-tracer method was in the range of 3.2-6.6 μg/m³. The continuous measurement reveals a decreasing trend in PM_vehicle throughout the entire sampling period, indicating the effectiveness of a recent vehicle control measures implemented by the Government in phasing out pre-Euro IV diesel commercial vehicles. This work implies that hourly OC-EC monitoring at strategically located spots is an effective way of monitoring vehicle control measures. It provides reasonable estimate of PM_vehicle through comparing with other more sophisticated receptor models.

Seasonal changes in carbonaceous aerosols over a tropical coastal location in response to meteorological processes

Near-surface atmospheric aerosols (PM₁₀) collected from a tropical coastal location in south-west peninsular Indian region for a duration of 6 years (2012-18) (N = 461) were analysed for carbonaceous aerosol components, the less studied aerosol species. Organic carbon (OC), its water soluble-insoluble (WSOC and WIOC) components, primary-secondary (POC and SOC) fractions and elemental carbon (EC) were examined for understanding the annual, seasonal, day-night variations in abundance pattern along with associated physical and meteorological processes. Total carbonaceous aerosols accounting for 36% of the collected aerosol mass with 31.5% organic matter (OM) and 4.5% EC respectively, exhibited consistent seasonal pattern throughout the study period with high concentration during winter followed by post-monsoon, pre-monsoon and monsoon. Delineation of marine and continental components of carbonaceous species based on their relative dominance during different air-mass periods, shows that while marine aerosols were a combination of natural sources comprising of volatile, semi-volatile species and secondary organics (from marine VOC precursors); the continental aerosols were composed of anthropogenic combustion sources (fossil fuel, biomass emissions etc). Based on the measurements of OC and EC during 2005-09 and 2012-18, their long term trends (for more than a decade) were investigated. Although OC showed an increasing tendency, EC exhibited a decrease with the total carbonaceous aerosols exhibiting a gradual decreasing trend over the years, indicating that they do not strictly reverberate the reported increasing trend observed over north-central parts of India. This can be presumed to be due to the reduced anthropogenic inputs over the location owing to the control measures and policies. The strong convective activity and large scale monsoon phenomena also helps in the effective dispersion of pollutants. Making use of comprehensive measurement of carbonaceous aerosols and the previous measurements of other aerosol components, an improved chemical composition model is presented.

Assessment of forest fire impacts on carbonaceous aerosols using complementary molecular marker receptor models at two urban locations in California's San Joaquin Valley

Two hundred sixty-three fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples were collected over fourteen months in Fresno and Bakersfield, California. Samples were analyzed for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and 160 organic molecular markers. Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) source apportionment models were applied to the results in order to understand monthly and seasonal source contributions to PM_2.5 OC. Similar source categories were found from the results of the CMB and PMF models to PM_2.5 OC across the sites. Six source categories with reasonably stable profiles, including biomass burning, mobile, food cooking, two different secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) (i.e., winter and summer), and forest fires were investigated. Both the CMB and the PMF models showed a strong seasonality in contributions of some sources, as well as dependence on wind transport for both sites. The overall relative source contributions to OC were 24% CMB wood smoke, 19% CMB mobile sources, 5% PMF food cooking, 2% CMB vegetative detritus, 17% PMF SOA summer, 22% PMF SOA winter, and 12% PMF forest fire. Back-trajectories using the Weather Research and Forecasting model combined with the FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (WRF-FLEXPART) were used to further characterize wind transport. Clustering of the trajectories revealed dominant wind patterns associated with varying concentrations of the different source categories. The Comprehensive Air Quality Model with eXtensions (CAMx) was used to simulate aerosol transport from forest fires and thus confirm the impacts of individual fires, such as the Rough Fire, at the measurement sites.

Physico-chemical characterization and in vitro inflammatory and oxidative potency of atmospheric particles collected in Dakar city's (Senegal)

Exposure to atmospheric pollutants has been recognized as a major risk factor of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Fine particles (PM_2.5) and a coarser fraction (PM_>2.5) sampled at an urban site in Dakar (HLM), characterized by high road traffic emissions, were compared with particles sampled at a rural area, Toubab Dialaw located about 40 km from Dakar. The physicochemical characteristics of samples revealed that PMs differ for their physical (surface area) and chemical properties (in terms of CHN, metals, ions, paraffins, VOCs and PAHs) that were 65-75% higher in urban samples. Moreover the fine PMs contain higher amounts of anthropogenic related pollutants than the PM_>2.5 one. These differences are sustained by the ratios reported for the analysed PAHs which suggest as predominant primary emission sources vehicle exhausts at urban site and biomass combustion at the rural site. The inflammatory response and the oxidative damages were evaluated in BEAS-2B cells by the quantification of 4 selected inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8) and of total carbonylated proteins and the oxidative DNA adduct 8-OHdG after 8 or 24 h exposure. In accordance with the different sources and different physical and chemical properties, the inflammatory response and the oxidative damages were found higher in bronchial cells exposed to urban PMs. These data confirm the importance, also for West African countries, to evaluate the correlation between PM physico-chemical properties and potential biological impacts.

Effect of biomass burning on black carbon (BC) in South Asia and Tibetan Plateau: The analysis of WRF-Chem modeling

The focus of this study is to evaluate the impact of biomass burning (BB) from South Asia and Southeast Asia on the glaciers over the Tibetan Plateau. The seasonality and long-term trend of biomass fires measured by Terra and Aqua satellite data from 2010 to 2016 are used in this study. The analysis shows that the biomass burnings were widely dispersed in the continental of Indian and Southeast Asia and existed a strong seasonal variation. The biomass burnings in winter (January) were relatively weak and scattered and were significantly enhanced in spring (April). The highest biomass burnings located in two regions. One was along the foothill of Himalayas, where is a dense population area, and the second located in Southeast Asia. Because these two high biomass burning regions are close to the Tibetan Plateau, they could have important effects on the BC deposition over the glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau. In order to study the effect of BB emissions on the deposition over the glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau, a regional chemical model (WRF-Chem; Weather Research and Forecasting Chemical model) was applied to simulate the BC distributions and the transport from BB emission regions to the glaciers in Tibetan Plateau. The result shows that in winter (January), due to the relatively weak BB emissions, the effect of BB emissions on BC concentrations was not significant. The BC concentrations resulted from BB emissions ranged from 0.1 to 2.0 μg/m³, with high concentrations distributed along the foothill of Himalayas and the southeastern Asia region. Due to the relative low BC concentrations, there was insignificant effect of BB emissions on the deposition over the glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau in winter. However, the BB emissions were highest in spring (April), producing high BC concentrations. For example, along the Himalayas Mountain and in the southeastern Asia region, The BC concentrations ranged from 2.0 to 6.0 μg/m³. In addition to the high BC concentrations, there were also west and south prevailing winds in these regions. As a result, the BC particles were transported to the glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau, causing significant deposition of BC particles on the snow surface of the glaciers. This study suggests that the biomass burning emissions have important effects on the BC deposition over the glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau, and the contaminations of glaciers could have significant impact on the melting of snow in the Tibetan Plateau, causing some severe environmental problems, such as the water resources.

Seasonal trends in the composition and sources of PM2.5 and carbonaceous aerosol in Tehran, Iran

Currently PM_2.5 is a major air pollution concern in Tehran, Iran due to frequent high levels and possible adverse impacts. In this study, which is the first of its kind to take place in Tehran, composition and sources of PM_2.5 and carbonaceous aerosol were determined, and their seasonal trends were studied. In this regard, fine PM samples were collected every six days at a residential station for one year and the chemical constituents including organic marker species, metals, and ions were analyzed by chemical analysis. The source apportionment was performed using organic molecular marker-based CMB receptor modeling. Carbonaceous compounds were the major contributors to fine particulate mass in Tehran, as OC and EC together comprised on average 29% of PM_2.5 mass. Major portions of OC in Tehran were water insoluble and are mainly attributed to primary sources. Higher levels of several PAHs, which are organic tracers of incomplete combustion, and hopanes and steranes as organic tracers of mobile sources were obtained in cold months and compared to the warm months. The major contributing source to particulate OC was identified as vehicles, which contributed about 72% of measured OC. Among mobile sources, gasoline-fueled vehicles had the highest impact with a mean contribution of 48% to the measured OC. Mobile sources also were the largest contributor to total PM_2.5 (40%), followed by dust (24%) and sulfate (11%). In addition to primary emissions, mobile sources also directly and indirectly played an important role in another 27% of fine particulate mass (secondary organics and ions), which highlights the impact of vehicles in Tehran. Our results highlighted and quantified the role of motor vehicles in fine PM production, particularly during winter time. The results of this study could be used to set more effective regulations and control strategies particularly upon mobile sources.

Benzo(a)pyrene parallel measurements in PM1 and PM2.5 in the coastal zone of the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea) in the heating and non-heating seasons

Parallel measurements of PM₁ and PM_2.5 aerosols were conducted in the urbanized coastal zone of the southern Baltic Sea. The main aim of the research was to assess and determine annual, seasonal (heating and non-heating), and daily concentration variability of benzo(a)pyrene in aerosols, these being the most dangerous constituents to human health. The average annual concentration of benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) was equal to 2.6 ng·m^-3 in PM₁ and 4.6 ng·m^-3 in PM_2.5, and both values were several times higher than the level of 1 ng·m^-3 which was set out in the CAFE Directive. High mean daily concentrations of B(a)P persisted for 50 and 65% of the study period in PM1 and PM2.5, respectively. In order to determine the sources of B(a)P in both aerosol fractions, organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon concentrations were examined. The highest concentrations of all carbon species were reported during the heating season under local or regional land advection and at low air temperatures. The origin of pollutants was the same and was primarily related to the combustion of fossil fuels in the communal-utility sector. During the non-heating period, the role of transportation, both land and marine, increased and may have been significant in creating higher concentrations of carbon compounds in PM₁ and PM_2.5. Regardless of the size of the aerosol fractions, B(a)P loads introduced into the Baltic coastal zone were several times higher during the heating period compared to the non-heating season. Source apportionments of PM2.5 organic carbon during the elevated pollution episodes in the Ordos region, Inner Mongolia, China

The Ordos region in the southwestern part of Inner Mongolia experiences frequent PM concentrations in excess of the national PM_2.5 air quality standards. In order to determine the key sources of PM_2.5 contributing to these pollution episodes, the main sources of PM_2.5 OC during elevated PM episodes in the Inner Mongolia were analyzed and compared with non-polluted days. This will provide insight to the main sources of particulate matter pollution during the high-pollution episodes and the effective seasonal strategies to control sources of particulate matter during months and with the highest PM concentrations that need to be controlled. The PMF source contributions to OC demonstrated that the industrial/coal combustion (4762.77 ± 1061.54 versus 2726.49 ± 469.75 ng/m³; p < 0.001) and mobile source factors (4651.14 ± 681.82 versus 2605.55 ± 276.50 ng/m³; p value < 0.001) showed greater contributions to the elevated concentrations during the episode. The spatial analysis of secondary organic carbon (SOC) factors, regional biomass burning, and biogenic sources did not show significant difference in the pollution episodes and the non-polluted months. In addition, the bivariate polar plots and CWT maps of the industrial/coal combustion and mobile illustrated a regional long-range transport patterns from the external sources to the study area, however, adjacent areas were mostly controlling the contributions of these factors during the PM elevated episodes. The SOC sources, regional biomass burning, and biogenic sources illustrated a regional long-range transport with similar locations found during the elevated pollution episodes compared to the normal situations.

Urban Organic Aerosol Exposure: Spatial Variations in Composition and Source Impacts

We conducted a mobile sampling campaign in a historically industrialized terrain (Pittsburgh, PA) targeting spatial heterogeneity of organic aerosol. Thirty-six sampling sites were chosen based on stratification of traffic, industrial source density, and elevation. We collected organic carbon (OC) on quartz filters, quantified different OC components with thermal-optical analysis, and grouped them based on volatility in decreasing order (OC1, OC2, OC3, OC4, and pyrolyzed carbon (PC)). We compared our ambient OC concentrations (both gas and particle phase) to similar measurements from vehicle dynamometer tests, cooking emissions, biomass burning emissions, and a highway traffic tunnel. OC2 and OC3 loading on ambient filters showed a strong correlation with primary emissions while OC4 and PC were more spatially homogeneous. While we tested our hypothesis of OC2 and OC3 as markers of fresh source exposure for Pittsburgh, the relationship seemed to hold at a national level. Land use regression (LUR) models were developed for the OC fractions, and models had an average R² of 0.64 (SD = 0.09). The paper demonstrates that OC2 and OC3 can be useful markers for fresh emissions, OC4 is a secondary OC indicator, and PC represents both biomass burning and secondary aerosol. People with higher OC exposure are likely inhaling more fresh OC2 and OC3, since secondary OC4 and PC varies much less drastically in space or with local primary sources.

Evaluation of thermal optical analysis method of elemental carbon for marine fuel exhaust

The awareness of black carbon (BC) as the second largest anthropogenic contributor in global warming and an ice melting enhancer has increased. Due to prospected increase in shipping especially in the Arctic reliability of BC emissions and their invented amounts from ships is gaining more attention. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is actively working toward estimation of quantities and effects of BC especially in the Arctic. IMO has launched work toward constituting a definition for BC and agreeing appropriate methods for its determination from shipping emission sources. In our study we evaluated the suitability of elemental carbon (EC) analysis by a thermal-optical transmittance (TOT) method to marine exhausts and possible measures to overcome the analysis interferences related to the chemically complex emissions. The measures included drying with CaSO_4, evaporation at 40-180ºC, H₂O treatment, and variation of the sampling method (in-stack and diluted) and its parameters (e.g., dilution ratio, Dr). A reevaluation of the nominal organic carbon (OC)/EC split point was made. Measurement of residual carbon after solvent extraction (TC-C_SOF) was used as a reference, and later also filter smoke number (FSN) measurement, which is dealt with in a forthcoming paper by the authors. Exhaust sources used for collecting the particle sample were mainly four-stroke marine engines operated with variable loads and marine fuels ranging from light to heavy fuel oils (LFO and HFO) with a sulfur content range of <0.1-2.4% S. The results were found to be dependent on many factors, namely, sampling, preparation and analysis method, and fuel quality. It was found that the condensed H₂SO₄ + H₂O on the particulate matter (PM) filter had an effect on the measured EC content, and also promoted the formation of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) from OC, affecting the accuracy of EC determination. Thus, uncertainty remained regarding the EC results from HFO fuels.

IMPLICATIONS

The work supports one part of the decision making in black carbon (BC) determination methodology. If regulations regarding BC emissions from marine engines will be implemented in the future, a well-defined and at best unequivocal method of BC determination is required for coherent and comparable emission inventories and estimating BC effects. As the aerosol from marine emission sources may be very heterogeneous and low in BC, special attention to the effects of sampling conditions and sample pretreatments on the validity of the results was paid in developing the thermal-optical analysis methodology (TOT).

Quantification of the sources of long-range transport of PM2.5 pollution in the Ordos region, Inner Mongolia, China

The Ordos region of Inner Mongolia is rapidly developing and suffers from poor air quality and unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter. PM_2.5 concentrations in the Ordos region were found to exceed 75 μg/m³ on average, annually, with peak pollution days in excess of 350 μg/m³, but local air pollution emissions from surrounding sources are not sufficient to drive pollution levels to these concentrations. The current study was designed to quantify sources of PM_2.5 and assess the local source contributions and effects of regional transport on local pollution. The results show that the Ordos region is primarily impacted by regional long-range transport of pollutants from anthropogenic sources located outside of the Inner Mongolia in Shanxi province areas but is also largely affected by regional dust transported from the deserts located in western Inner Mongolia. The analysis proved that approximately 77% of PM_2.5 mass is transported long-range from the sites exterior to the study area and contributes 59.32 μg/m³ on average, annually, while the local sources contribute 17.41 μg/m³ (23%) on annual average to the PM_2.5 mass in the study area. High spatial correlation coefficients (R² > 0.6) were observed for most of the factors pointing to the transport of external emissions into the area. Spatial correlation analysis, bivariate polar plots and hybrid trajectory models for industrial and secondary inorganic factors provide evidence for the impact of long-range transport from Shanxi province areas. In addition, the deserts in western Inner Mongolia were found to be the source regions for dust. Finally, our analysis shows that the source of oil combustion and mobile factors are impacted by local sources in the Ordos region; however, some regional impacts from other regions were also observed for mobile source in the area.

Source apportionments of ambient fine particulate matter in Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian cities

This manuscript evaluates spatial and temporal variations of source contributions to ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) in Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian cities. Twenty-four hour integrated PM_2.5 samples were collected every six days over a 1-year period (January to December 2007) in four cities in Israel (West Jerusalem, Eilat, Tel Aviv, and Haifa), four cities in Jordan (Amman, Aqaba, Rahma, and Zarka), and three cities in Palestine (Nablus, East Jerusalem, and Hebron). The PM_2.5 samples were analyzed for major chemical components, including organic carbon and elemental carbon, ions, and metals, and the results were used in a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model to estimate source contributions to PM_2.5 mass. Nine sources, including secondary sulfate, secondary nitrate, mobile, industrial lead sources, dust, construction dust, biomass burning, fuel oil combustion and sea salt, were identified across the sampling sites. Secondary sulfate was the dominant source, contributing 35% of the total PM_2.5 mass, and it showed relatively homogeneous temporal trends of daily source contribution in the study area. Mobile sources were found to be the second greatest contributor to PM_2.5 mass in the large metropolitan cities, such as Tel Aviv, Hebron, and West and East Jerusalem. Other sources (i.e. industrial lead sources, construction dust, and fuel oil combustion) were closely related to local emissions within individual cities. This study demonstrates how international cooperation can facilitate air pollution studies that address regional air pollution issues and the incremental differences across cities in a common airshed. It also provides a model to study air pollution in regions with limited air quality monitoring capacity that have persistent and emerging air quality problems, such as Africa, South Asia and Central America.

Exposures to and origins of carbonaceous PM2.5 in a cookstove intervention in Northern Ghana

REACCTING (Research on Emissions Air Quality, Climate, and Cooking Technologies in Northern Ghana) was a 200-home cookstove intervention study from 2013 to 2015. Study households were divided into four groups: a control group, a group given two locally made rocket stoves, a group given two Philips forced draft stoves, and a group given a locally made rocket stove and a Philips stove. In a subset of study households, 48-hour PM_2.5 exposure samples were collected for adults and children, as well as in the primary cooking area. Further, weekly ambient background PM_2.5 samples were collected for the first nine months of the study. All PM_2.5 samples were analyzed for elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC), and a subset was also analyzed for organics. Mixed effects modeling was applied to quantify differences in PM exposures between the groups and to assess relationships between exposures and cooking area measurements. Results showed that personal OC exposure for the intervention groups was 56.6% lower than the control group (p≤0.01). Both intervention groups given Philips stoves had significantly lower EC exposure than the control group (60.6% reduction, p≤0.02). Only weak relationships were found between personal and cooking area EC or OC. Source apportionment modeling was performed on both the personal/microenvironment and the ambient organics PM_2.5 data sets to assess the sources of the observed PM. We identified six PM sources. The identified source factors were similar among the data sets, as well as with previous work in Navrongo. Two sources, one characterized by the presence of methoxyphenols, and one by the presence of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and EC, were associated with biomass burning, and accounted for a median of 9.2% of OC and 15.3% of EC personal exposure. Here, we demonstrate the utility of using the cooking-related source apportionment factors within a mixed effects model for more precise estimation of exposures due to cooking, rather than other combustion sources unrelated to the intervention.

Toxicological Implications of Released Particulate Matter during Thermal Decomposition of Nano-Enabled Thermoplastics

Nano-enabled thermoplastics are part of the growing market of nano-enabled products (NEPs) that have vast utility in several industries and consumer goods. The use and disposal of NEPs at their end of life has raised concerns about the potential release of constituent engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) during thermal decomposition and their impact on environmental health and safety. To investigate this issue, industrially relevant nano-enabled thermoplastics including polyurethane, polycarbonate, and polypropylene containing carbon nanotubes (0.1 and 3% w/v, respectively), polyethylene containing nanoscale iron oxide (5% w/v), and ethylene vinyl acetate containing nanoscale titania (2 and 5% w/v) along with their pure thermoplastic matrices were thermally decomposed using the recently developed lab based Integrated Exposure Generation System (INEXS). The life cycle released particulate matter (called LCPM) was monitored using real time instrumentation, size fractionated, sampled, extracted and prepared for toxicological analysis using primary small airway epithelial cells to assess potential toxicological effects. Various cellular assays were used to assess reactive oxygen species and total glutathione as measurements of oxidative stress along with mitochondrial function, cellular viability, and DNA damage. By comparing toxicological profiles of LCPM released from polymer only (control) with nano-enabled LCPM, potential nanofiller effects due to the use of ENMs were determined. We observed associations between NEP properties such as the percent nanofiller loading, host matrix, and nanofiller chemical composition and the physico-chemical properties of released LCPM, which were linked to biological outcomes. More specifically, an increase in percent nanofiller loading promoted a toxicological response independent of increasing LCPM dose. Importantly, differences in host matrix and nanofiller composition were shown to enhance biological activity and toxicity of LCPM. This work highlights the importance of assessing the toxicological properties of LCPM and raises environmental health and safety concerns of nano-enabled products at their end of life during thermal decomposition/incineration.

Temporal variations and source apportionment of Hulis-C in PM2.5 in urban Shanghai

Humic-like substances (Hulis), the hydrophobic part of water-soluble organic compounds, have been recognized to play important roles in environmental behavior of PM2.5 in atmosphere. In this study, Hulis and other components of PM2.5, collected in urban Shanghai from September 2013 to August 2014 were analyzed. The annual average concentration of Hulis carbon (Hulis-C) was (2.61±2.58) μg/m(3), accounting for about 50% of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). The monthly average Hulis-C concentration peaked in December while the lowest was in summer, coinciding with the high and low of levoglucosan and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA). Biomass burning and secondary formation were both important sources of Hulis-C, and their contributions showed obvious seasonality. In late autumn and winter, the strong inter-correlations among Hulis-C concentrations, NO3(-)/SO4(2-) mass ratios and nitrogen oxidation ratios (NOR) were found, suggesting the atmospheric oxidation of NOx to nitrate and related gas-phase reactions may be inter-linked with Hulis-C formation. In summer, photochemical reaction was clearly the major source of Hulis-C. The investigation by backward trajectory analysis showed that the long-range transport from the Northwest brought large amounts of PM2.5 and enhanced Hulis-C and levoglucosan level, indicating biomass burning as a significant source of Hulis-C under this type of synoptic weather conditions. In comparison, Hulis formation associated with the NOx oxidation pathway was mainly associated with the short-range transport from the neighboring cities. Marine aerosol was relatively clean and had little effects on Hulis-C. The CWT (concentration weighted trajectory) model results suggested that the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region was an important source region of Hulis-C, while the effect of some northwestern areas was not negligible.

Relative impact of emissions controls and meteorology on air pollution mitigation associated with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in Beijing, China

The Beijing government and its surrounding provinces implemented a series of measures to ensure haze-free skies during the 22(nd) Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference (November 10(th)-11(th), 2014). These measures included restrictions on traffic, construction, and industrial activity. Twelve hour measurements of the concentration and composition of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were performed for 5 consecutive months near the APEC conference site before (September 11(th)-November 2(nd), 2014), during (November 3(rd)-12(th), 2014) and after (November 13(th), 2014-January 31(st), 2015). The measurements are used in a positive matrix factorization model to determine the contributions from seven sources of PM2.5: secondary aerosols, traffic exhaust, industrial emission, road dust, soil dust, biomass burning and residual oil combustion. The source apportionment results are integrated with backward trajectory analysis using Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) meteorological simulations, which determine the relative influence of new regulation and meteorology upon improved air quality during the APEC conference. Data show that controls are very effective, but meteorology must be taken into account to determine the actual influence of the controls on pollution reduction. The industry source control is the most effective for reducing concentrations, followed by secondary aerosol and biomass controls, while the least effective control is for the residual oil combustion source. The largest reductions in concentrations occur when air mass transport is from the west-northwest (Ulanqab). Secondary aerosol and traffic exhaust reductions are most significant for air mass transport from the north-northwest (Xilingele League) origin, and least significant for northeast transport (Chifeng via Tangshan conditions). The largest reductions of soil dust, biomass burning, and industrial source are distinctly seen for Ulanqab conditions and least distinct for Xilingele League.

Enrichment of Saccharides and Divalent Cations in Sea Spray Aerosol During Two Phytoplankton Blooms

Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is a globally important source of particulate matter. A mesocosm study was performed to determine the relative enrichment of saccharides and inorganic ions in nascent fine (PM_2.5) and coarse (PM_10-2.5) SSA and the sea surface microlayer (SSML) relative to bulk seawater. Saccharides comprise a significant fraction of organic matter in fine and coarse SSA (11 and 27%, respectively). Relative to sodium, individual saccharides were enriched 14-1314-fold in fine SSA, 3-138-fold in coarse SSA, but only up to 1.0-16.2-fold in SSML. Enrichments in SSML were attributed to rising bubbles that scavenge surface-active species from seawater, while further enrichment in fine SSA likely derives from bubble films. Mean enrichment factors for major ions demonstrated significant enrichment in fine SSA for potassium (1.3), magnesium (1.4), and calcium (1.7), likely because of their interactions with organic matter. Consequently, fine SSA develops a salt profile significantly different from that of seawater. Maximal enrichments of saccharides and ions coincided with the second of two phytoplankton blooms, signifying the influence of ocean biology on selective mass transfer across the ocean-air interface.

Associations of oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers with chemically-characterized air pollutant exposures in an elderly cohort

BACKGROUND

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. However, the chemical constituents and pollution sources underlying these associations remain unclear.

METHOD

We conducted a cohort panel study involving 97 elderly subjects living in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Airway and circulating biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation were measured weekly over 12 weeks and included, exhaled breath condensate malondialdehyde (EBC MDA), fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), plasma oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6). Exposures included 7-day personal nitrogen oxides (NOx), daily criteria-pollutant data, five-day average particulate matter (PM) measured in three size-fractions and characterized by chemical components including transition metals, and in vitro PM oxidative potential (dithiothreitol and macrophage reactive oxygen species). Associations between biomarkers and pollutants were assessed using linear mixed effects regression models.

RESULTS

We found significant positive associations of airway oxidative stress and inflammation with traffic-related air pollutants, ultrafine particles and transition metals. Positive but nonsignificant associations were observed with PM oxidative potential. The strongest associations were observed among PM variables in the ultrafine range (PM <0.18µm). It was estimated that an interquartile increase in 5-day average ultrafine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was associated with a 6.3% (95% CI: 1.1%, 11.6%) increase in EBC MDA and 6.7% (95% CI: 3.4%, 10.2%) increase in FeNO. In addition, positive but nonsignificant associations were observed between oxLDL and traffic-related pollutants, ultrafine particles and transition metals while plasma IL-6 was positively associated with 1-day average traffic-related pollutants.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that exposure to pollutants with high oxidative potential (traffic-related pollutants, ultrafine particles, and transition metals) may lead to increased airway oxidative stress and inflammation in elderly adults. This observation was less clear with circulating biomarkers.

Near-Real Time Measurement of Carbonaceous Aerosol Using Microplasma Spectroscopy: Application to Measurement of Carbon Nanomaterials

A sensitive, field-portable microplasma spectroscopy method has been developed for real-time measurement of carbon nanomaterials. The method involves microconcentration of aerosol on a microelectrode tip for subsequent analysis for atomic carbon using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) or spark emission spectroscopy (SES). The spark-induced microplasma was characterized by measuring the excitation temperature (15,000 - 35,000 K), electron density (1.0 × 1017 - 2.2 × 1017 cm-3), and spectral responses as functions of time and interelectrode distance. The system was calibrated and detection limits were determined for total atomic carbon (TAC) using a carbon emission line at 247.856 nm (C I) for various carbonaceous materials including sucrose, EDTA, caffeine, sodium carbonate, carbon black, and carbon nanotubes. The limit of detection for total atomic carbon was 1.61 ng, equivalent to 238 ng m-3 when sampling at 1.5 L min-1 for 5 min. To improve the selectivity for carbon nanomaterials, which consist of elemental carbon (EC), the cathode was heated to 300 °C to reduce the contribution of organic carbon to the total atomic carbon. Measurements of carbon nanotube aerosol at elevated electrode temperature showed improved selectivity to elemental carbon and compared well with the measurements from thermal optical method (NIOSH Method 5040). The study shows that the SES method to be an excellent candidate for development as a low-cost, hand-portable, real-time instrument for measurement of carbonaceous aerosols and nanomaterials.

Simultaneous monitoring and compositions analysis of PM1 and PM2.5 in Shanghai: Implications for characterization of haze pollution and source apportionment

A year-long simultaneous observation of PM1 and PM2.5 were conducted at ECUST campus in Shanghai, the compositions were analyzed and compared. Results showed that PM2.5 was dominated by PM1 on clear days while the contribution of PM1-2.5 to PM2.5 increased on haze days, indicating that PM2.5 should be given priority to characterize or predict haze pollution. On haze days, accumulation of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and primary organic carbon (POC) in PM1-2.5 was faster than that in PM1. Humic-like substances carbon (Hulis-C) in both PM2.5 and PM1 formed faster than water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) on haze days, hence Hulis-C/WSOC increased with the intensification of haze pollution. In terms of water soluble ions, NO3(-)/SO4(2-) in PM1 increased with the aggravation of haze pollution, implying that mobile sources dominated on haze days, so is nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR). Liquid water content (LWC) in both PM1 and PM2.5 had positive correlations with relative humidity (RH) but negative correlations with visibility, implying that hygroscopic growth might be a factor for visibility impairment, especially LWC in PM1. By comparison with multi-linear equations of LWC in PM1 and PM2.5, NO3(-) exerted a higher influence on hygroscopicity of PM1 than PM2.5, while RH, WSOC, SO4(2-) and NH4(+) had higher effects on PM2.5, especially WSOC. Source apportionment of PM2.5 was also investigated to provide reference for policy making. Cluster analysis by HYSPLIT (HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model showed that PM2.5 originated from marine aerosols, middle-scale transportation and large-scale transportation. Furthermore, PM2.5 on haze days was dominated by middle-scale transportation. In line with source apportionment by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, PM2.5 was attributed to secondary inorganics, aged sea salt, combustion emissions, hygroscopic growth and secondary organics. Secondary formation was the principle source of PM2.5. Furthermore, the contribution of combustion emissions to PM2.5 increased with the intensification of haze pollution, which was just opposite to hygroscopic growth, while that of secondary formation kept quite stable on clear days and haze days.

Radiative absorption enhancement from coatings on black carbon aerosols

The radiative absorption enhancement of ambient black carbon (BC), by light-refractive coatings of atmospheric aerosols, constitutes a large uncertainty in estimates of climate forcing. The direct measurements of radiative absorption enhancement require the experimentally-removing the coating materials in ambient BC-containing aerosols, which remains a challenge. Here, the absorption enhancement of the BC core by non-absorbing aerosol coatings was quantified using a two-step removal of both inorganic and organic matter coatings of ambient aerosols. The mass absorption cross-section (MAC) of decoated/pure atmospheric BC aerosols of 4.4±0.8m(2)g(-1) was enhanced to 9.6±1.8m(2)g(-1) at 678-nm wavelength for ambiently-coated BC aerosols at a rural Northern China site. The enhancement of MAC (EMAC) rises from 1.4±0.3 in fresh combustion emissions to ~3 for aged ambient China aerosols. The three-week high-intensity campaign observed an average EMAC of 2.25±0.55, and sulfates were primary drivers of the enhanced BC absorption.

Quantification of elemental and organic carbon in atmospheric particulate matter using color space sensing-hue, saturation, and value (HSV) coordinates

A fast and cost effective application of color sensing was used to quantify color coordinates of atmospheric particulate matter collected on filters to quantify elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC) loading. This is a unique and novel approach for estimating OC composition. The method used a colorimeter and digital photography to obtain XYZ color space values and mathematically transformed them to HSV cylindrical-coordinates; a quantification method was applied to estimate the NIOSH and IMPROVE (TOR) EC/OC loadings from a set of globally diverse PM samples. When applied to 315 samples collected at three US EPA Chemical Speciation Network (CSN) sampling sites, the HSV model proved to be a robust method for EC measurement with an R(2)=0.917 for predicted versus measured loading results and a CV(RMSE)=16.1%. The OC quantified from the same sample filters had an R(2)=0.671 and a CV(RMSE)=24.8% between the predicted and measured results. The method was applied to NIOSH EC/OC results from a set of samples from rural China, Bagdad, and the San Joaquin Valley, CA, and the EC and OC CV(RMSE) were 30.8% and 49.3%, respectively. Additionally, the method was applied to samples with color quantified by a digital photographic image (DPI) with EC results showing good agreement with a CV(RMSE) of 22.6%. OC concentrations were not captured as accurately with the DPI method, with a CV(RMSE) of 77.5%. The method's low analytical cost makes it a valuable tool for estimating EC/OC exposure in developing regions and for large scale monitoring campaigns.

Thermal decomposition of nano-enabled thermoplastics: Possible environmental health and safety implications

Nano-enabled products (NEPs) are currently part of our life prompting for detailed investigation of potential nano-release across their life-cycle. Particularly interesting is their end-of-life thermal decomposition scenario. Here, we examine the thermal decomposition of widely used NEPs, namely thermoplastic nanocomposites, and assess the properties of the byproducts (released aerosol and residual ash) and possible environmental health and safety implications. We focus on establishing a fundamental understanding on the effect of thermal decomposition parameters, such as polymer matrix, nanofiller properties, decomposition temperature, on the properties of byproducts using a recently-developed lab-based experimental integrated platform. Our results indicate that thermoplastic polymer matrix strongly influences size and morphology of released aerosol, while there was minimal but detectable nano-release, especially when inorganic nanofillers were used. The chemical composition of the released aerosol was found not to be strongly influenced by the presence of nanofiller at least for the low, industry-relevant loadings assessed here. Furthermore, the morphology and composition of residual ash was found to be strongly influenced by the presence of nanofiller. The findings presented here on thermal decomposition/incineration of NEPs raise important questions and concerns regarding the potential fate and transport of released engineered nanomaterials in environmental media and potential environmental health and safety implications.

ROS production and gene expression in alveolar macrophages exposed to PM(2.5) from Baghdad, Iraq: Seasonal trends and impact of chemical composition

The objective of this study was to assess the impact of changes in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) composition on oxidative stress markers in an in-vitro alveolar macrophage (AM) model. Fifty-three PM2.5 samples were collected during a year-long PM sampling campaign in Baghdad, Iraq, a semi-arid region of the country. Monthly composites were analyzed for chemical composition and for biological activity using in-vitro measurements of ROS production and gene expression in the AM model. Twelve genes that were differentially expressed upon PM exposure were identified and their co-associations with the composition of PM2.5 were examined. Ten of those genes were up-regulated in January and April composites; samples which also exhibited high ROS activity and relatively high PM mass concentration. ROS production was statistically correlated with total PM2.5 mass, levoglucosan (a wood burning tracer) and several trace elements of the PM (especially V and Ni, which are associated with oil combustion). The expression of several cytokine genes was found to be moderately associated with PM mass, crustal materials (indication of dusty days or dust storms) and certain metals (e.g. V, Fe and Ni) in the PM. Thus, the ROS activity association with PM2.5, may, in part, be driven by redox-active metals. The antioxidant response genes (Nqo1 and Hmox1) were moderately associated with polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and showed a good correlation (r-Pearson of >0.7) with metals linked to vehicle-related emissions (i.e. Cu, Zn and Sb). Examining these associations in a larger sample pool (e.g. daily samples) would improve the power of the analysis and may strengthen the implication of these chemicals in the oxidative stress of biological systems, which could aid in the development of new metrics of PM toxicity.

Atmospheric impacts of black carbon emission reductions through the strategic use of biodiesel in California

The use of biodiesel as a replacement for petroleum-based diesel fuel has gained interest as a strategy for greenhouse gas emission reductions, energy security, and economic advantage. Biodiesel adoption may also reduce particulate elemental carbon (EC) emissions from conventional diesel engines that are not equipped with after-treatment devices. This study examines the impact of biodiesel blends on EC emissions from a commercial off-road diesel engine and simulates the potential public health benefits and climate benefits. EC emissions from the commercial off-road engine decreased by 76% when ultra-low sulfur commercial diesel (ULSD) fuel was replaced by biodiesel. Model calculations predict that reduced EC emissions translate directly into reduced EC concentrations in the atmosphere, but the concentration of secondary particulate matter was not directly affected by this fuel change. Redistribution of secondary particulate matter components to particles emitted from other sources did change the size distribution and therefore deposition rates of those components. Modification of meteorological variables such as water content and temperature influenced secondary particulate matter formation. Simulations with a source-oriented WRF/Chem model (SOWC) for a severe air pollution episode in California that adopted 75% biodiesel blended with ULSD in all non-road diesel engines reduced surface EC concentrations by up to 50% but changed nitrate and total PM2.5 mass concentrations by less than ±5%. These changes in concentrations will have public health benefits but did not significantly affect radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere. The removal of EC due to the adoption of biodiesel produced larger coatings of secondary particulate matter on other atmospheric particles containing residual EC leading to enhanced absorption associated with those particles. The net effect was a minor change in atmospheric optical properties despite a large change in atmospheric EC concentrations. These results emphasize the importance of considering EC mixing state in climate research.

Fine particulate matter components and emergency department visits for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in the St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois, metropolitan area

BACKGROUND

Given that fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 μm; PM2.5) is a mixture of multiple components, it has been of high interest to identify its specific health-relevant physical and/or chemical features.

OBJECTIVES

We conducted a time-series study of PM2.5 and cardiorespiratory emergency department (ED) visits in the St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois metropolitan area, using 2 years of daily PM2.5 and PM2.5 component measurements (including ions, carbon, particle-phase organic compounds, and elements) made at the St. Louis-Midwest Supersite, a monitoring site of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Supersites ambient air monitoring research program.

METHODS

Using Poisson generalized linear models, we assessed short-term associations between daily cardiorespiratory ED visit counts and daily levels of 24 selected pollutants. Associations were estimated for interquartile range changes in each pollutant. To allow comparison of relationships among multiple pollutants and outcomes with potentially different lag structures, we used 3-day unconstrained distributed lag models controlling for time trends and meteorology.

RESULTS

Considering results of our primary models, as well as sensitivity analyses and models assessing co-pollutant confounding, we observed robust associations of cardiovascular disease visits with 17α(H),21β(H)-hopane and congestive heart failure visits with elemental carbon. We also observed a robust association of respiratory disease visits with ozone. For asthma/wheeze, associations were strongest with ozone and nitrogen dioxide; observed associations of asthma/wheeze with PM2.5 and its components were attenuated in two-pollutant models with these gases. Differential measurement error due to differential patterns of spatiotemporal variability may have influenced patterns of observed associations across pollutants.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings add to the growing field examining the health effects of PM2.5 components. Combustion-related components of the pollutant mix showed particularly strong associations with cardiorespiratory ED visit outcomes.

Chemical speciation and source apportionment of fine particulate matter in Santiago, Chile, 2013

Santiago is one of the largest cities in South America and has experienced high fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations in fall and winter months for decades. To better understand the sources of fall and wintertime pollution in Santiago, PM2.5 samples were collected for 24 h every weekday from March to October 2013 for chemical analysis. Samples were analyzed for mass, elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), water soluble nitrogen (WSTN), secondary inorganic ions, and particle-phase organic tracers for source apportionment. Selected samples were analyzed as monthly composites for organic tracers. PM2.5 concentrations were considerably higher in the coldest months (June-July), averaging (mean ± standard deviation) 62±15 μg/m(3) in these two months. Average fine particle mass concentration during the study period was 40±20 μg/m(3). Organic matter during the peak winter months was the major component of fine particles comprising around 70% of the particle mass. Source contributions to OC were calculated using organic molecular markers and a chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model. The four combustion sources identified were wood smoke, diesel engine emission, gasoline vehicles, and natural gas. Wood smoke was the predominant source of OC, accounting for 58±42% of OC in fall and winter. Wood smoke and nitrate were the major contributors to PM2.5. In fall and winter, wood smoke accounted for 9.8±7.1 μg/m(3) (21±15%) and nitrate accounted for 9.1±4.8 μg/m(3) (20±10%) of fine PM. The sum of secondary inorganic ions (sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) represented about 30% of PM2.5 mass. Secondary organic aerosols contributed only in warm months, accounting for about 30% of fine PM during this time.

Aerosol characteristics at a rural station in southern peninsular India during CAIPEEX-IGOC: physical and chemical properties

To understand the boundary layer characteristics and pathways of aerosol-cloud interaction, an Integrated Ground Observational Campaign, concurrent with Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment, was conducted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, under Ministry of Earth Sciences at Mahabubnagar (a rural environment, which is ~100 km away from an urban city Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh), during the period of July-November 2011. Collected samples of PM2.5 and PM10 were analyzed for water-soluble ionic species along with organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC). During study period, the average mass concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 were about 50(±10) and 69(±14) μg m(-3), respectively, which are significantly higher than the prescribed Indian National Ambient Air Quality Standards values. The chemical species such as sum of anions and cations from measured chemical constituents were contributed to be 31.27 and 38.49% in PM2.5 and 6.35 and 5.65% to the PM10, whereas carbonaceous species contributed ~17.3 and 20.47% for OC and ~3.0 and 3.10% for EC, respectively. The average ratio of PM2.5/PM10 during study period was ~0.73(±0.2), indicating that the dominance of fine size particles. Carbonaceous analysis results showed that the average concentration of OC was 14 and 8.7 μg m(-3), while EC was 2.1 and 1.5 μg m(-3) for PM10 and PM2.5, respectively. The ratios between OC and EC were estimated, which were 6.6 and 5.7 for PM10 and PM2.5, suggesting the presence of secondary organic aerosol. Total carbonaceous aerosol accounts 23% of PM10 in which the contribution of OC is 20% and EC is 3%, while 20% of PM2.5 mass in which the contribution of OC is 17% and EC is 3%. Out of the total aerosols mass, water-soluble constituents contributed an average of 45% in PM10 and 38% in PM2.5 including about 39% anions and 6% cations in PM10, while 31% anions and 7% cations in PM2.5 aerosol mass collectively at study site.
