Uptake of pharmaceutical and personal care products by soybean plants from soils applied with biosolids and irrigated with contaminated water

Unmasking Spatial Heterogeneity in Phytotoxicology Mechanisms Induced by Carbamazepine by Mass Spectrometry Imaging and Multiomics Analyses

Previous studies have highlighted the toxicity of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in plants, yet understanding their spatial distribution within plant tissues and specific toxic effects remains limited. This study investigates the spatial-specific toxic effects of carbamazepine (CBZ), a prevalent PPCP, in plants. Utilizing desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI), CBZ and its transformation products were observed predominantly at the leaf edges, with 2.3-fold higher concentrations than inner regions, which was confirmed by LC-MS. Transcriptomic and metabolic analyses revealed significant differences in gene expression and metabolite levels between the inner and outer leaf regions, emphasizing the spatial location's role in CBZ response. Notably, photosynthesis-related genes were markedly downregulated, and photosynthetic efficiency was reduced at leaf edges. Additionally, elevated oxidative stress at leaf edges was indicated by higher antioxidant enzyme activity, cell membrane impairment, and increased free fatty acids. Given the increased oxidative stress at the leaf margins, the study suggests using in situ Raman spectroscopy for early detection of CBZ-induced damage by monitoring reactive oxygen species levels. These findings provide crucial insights into the spatial toxicological mechanisms of CBZ in plants, forming a basis for future spatial toxicology research of PPCPs.

Occurrence and distribution of azole antifungal agents in eight urban Romanian waste water treatment plants

Azole compounds are utilized to combat fungal infections in plants to protect them and also used for treating mycosis in humans. The LC-MS/MS method is a technique that combines liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry for analysis of twelve azole compounds from wastewater (influent, effluent) and sewage sludge. The compounds were isolated from waste water using automatic extraction in the solid phase. Sludge samples were dried by lyophilization, after which they were subjected to ultrasound extraction with methanol. The quantification limits ranged from 0.3 ng/L (clotrimazole-CLO and prochloraz-PRO) to 1.5 ng/L (tetraconazole-TEB and penconazole-PEN), for wastewater samples and for sewage sludge, the LOQs ranged from 0.1 ng/g to 0.6 ng/g. High concentrations of climbazole-CLI (207-391 ng/L), tebuconazole (92-424 ng/L), and clotrimazole (6.9-93-ng/L) were observed in influent samples of the 8 urban wastewater treatment plants, followed by fluconazole (49.3-76.8 ng/L), and prochloraz (7.3-72 ng/L). The ∑Azoles had a maximum of 676 ng/L in the Galati effluent, followed by the Bucharest station 357 ng/L, and 345 ng/L in the Braila effluent. The highest value of the daily mass loading (input) level was observed for climbazole, 265 mg/day/1000 in Iasi station, followed by tebuconazole, 238 mg/day/1000 people in the Bucharest station, and 203 mg/day/1000 people for climbazole in the Targoviste station. The daily mass emission presented values between 0.7 and 247 mg/day/1000 people. The highest emissions were observed for climbazole, 247 mg/day/1000 people in Braila station; 174 mg/day/1000 people in the Iasi station and 129 mg/day/1000 people in the Bucharest station. The concentrations of climbazole detected in the effluent can present a high risk for the plants Lemna minor and Navicula pelliculosa. Clotrimazole may present a high risk to the plant Desmodesmus subspicatus and to the invertebrate Daphnia magna. PRO may present high risk to the invertebrate Mysidopsis Bahia.

Emerging organic contaminants in the soil-plant-receptor continuum: transport, fate, health risks, and removal mechanisms

There is a lack of comprehensive reviews tracking emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) within the soil-plant continuum using the source-pathway-receptor-impact-mitigation (SPRIM) framework. Therefore, this review examines existing literature to gain insights into the occurrence, behaviour, fate, health hazards, and strategies for mitigating EOCs within the soil-plant system. EOCs identified in the soil-plant system encompass endocrine-disrupting chemicals, surfactants, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticizers, gasoline additives, flame retardants, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Sources of EOCs in the soil-plant system include the land application of biosolids, wastewater, and solid wastes rich in EOCs. However, less-studied sources encompass plastics and atmospheric deposition. EOCs are transported from their sources to the soil-plant system and other receptors through human activities, wind-driven processes, and hydrological pathways. The behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs within the soil-plant system are discussed, including sorption, degradation, phase partitioning, (bio)transformation, biouptake, translocation, and bioaccumulation in plants. Factors governing the behaviour, persistence, and fate of EOCs in the soil-plant system include pH, redox potential, texture, temperature, and soil organic matter content. The review also discusses the environmental receptors of EOCs, including their exchange with other environmental compartments (aquatic and atmospheric), and interactions with soil organisms. The ecological health risks, human exposure via inhalation of particulate matter and consumption of contaminated food, and hazards associated with various EOCs in the soil-plant system are discussed. Various mitigation measures including removal technologies of EOCs in the soil are discussed. Finally, future research directions are presented.

Evaluation of different QuEChERS-based methods for the extraction of 48 wastewater-derived organic contaminants from soil and lettuce root using high-resolution LC-QTOF with MRMHR and SWATH acquisition modes

The reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture is an important route of introducing a large number of organic contaminants into the agroecosystem. In this study, a modified QuEChERS-based approach was developed for rapid, simple, and simultaneous extraction of 48 organic wastewater-derived contaminants from soil and lettuce root. Twenty-two different (modification) scenarios of the known (or original) QuEChERS method have been tested, in order to obtain best and well-compromised recoveries for all target compounds for soil and roots. Finally, a common method was chosen for both matrices consisting of a single extraction step using EDTA-Mcllvaine buffer and the unbuffered Original QuEChERS salts. Method performance was accomplished by liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry on a QToF-MS system using two different acquisition modes, the ultra-fast high-resolution multiple reaction monitoring (MRMHR) mode and the innovative Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Fragment-Ion (SWATH) mode. Performance characterization was evaluated in terms of recovery, linearity, intra-day precision, method detection limits (MDLs), method quantification limits (MQLs), and matrix effect (ME). Recoveries in MRMHR mode ranged from 63 to 111% and 54 to 104% for lettuce root and soil, respectively, for most of compounds in MRMHR mode and from 56 to 121% and 54 to 104% for lettuce root and soil, respectively, for most of compounds in SWATH. Whereas, MQLs ranged from 0.03 to 0.92 ng g-1 in MRMHR and from 0.03 to 82 ng g-1 in SWATH for lettuce root, and from 0.02 to 0.44 ng g-1 in MRMHR and 0.02 to 0.14 ng g-1 in SWATH for soil. The method was then applied to follow the target compounds in soil and lettuce root, where the system lettuce-soil was irrigated with treated wastewater under real greenhouse conditions. Five and 17 compounds were detected in lettuce root and soil, respectively.

Perfluoroalkyl acid precursors in agricultural soil-plant systems: Occurrence, uptake, and biotransformation

Perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) precursors have been used in various consumer and industrial products due to their hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. In recent years, PFAA precursors in agricultural soil-plant systems have received increasing attention as they are susceptible to biotransformation into metabolites with high biotoxicity risks to human health. In this review, we systematically assessed the occurrence of PFAA precursors in agricultural soils, taking into account their sources and biodegradation pathways. In addition, we summarized the findings of the relevant literature on the uptake and biotransformation of PFAA precursors by agricultural plants. The applications of biosolids/composts and pesticides are the main sources of PFAA precursors in agricultural soils. The physicochemical properties of PFAA precursors, soil organic carbon (SOC) contents, and plant species are the key factors influencing plant root uptakes of PFAA precursors from soils. This review revealed, through toxicity assessment, the potential of PFAA precursors to generate metabolites with higher toxicity than the parent precursors. The results of this paper provide a reference for future research on PFAA precursors and their metabolites in soil-plant systems.

Personal care products in soil-plant and hydroponic systems: Uptake, translocation, and accumulation

Personal care products (PCPs) are organic compounds that are incorporated in several daily life products, such as shampoos, lotions, perfumes, cleaning products, air fresheners, etc. Due to their massive and continuous use and because they are not routinely monitored in the environment, these compounds are considered emerging contaminants. In fact, residues of PCPs are being discharged into the sewage system, reaching wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), where most of these compounds are not completely degraded, being partially released into the environment via the final effluents and/or accumulating in the sewage sludges. Environmental sustainability is nowadays one of the main pillars of society and the application of circular economy models, promoting the waste valorisation, is increasingly encouraged. Therefore, irrigation with reclaimed wastewater or soil fertilization with sewage sludge/biosolids are interesting solutions. However, these practices raise concerns due to the potential risks associated to the presence of hazardous compounds, including PCPs. When applied to agricultural soils, PCPs present in these matrices can contaminate the soil or be taken up by crops. Crops can therefore become a route of exposure for humans and pose a risk to public health. However, the extent to which PCPs are taken up and bioaccumulated in crops is highly dependent on the physicochemical properties of the compounds, environmental variables, and the plant species. This issue has attracted the attention of scientists in recent years and the number of publications on this topic has rapidly increased, but a systematic review of these studies is lacking. Therefore, the present paper reviews the uptake, accumulation, and translocation of different classes of PCPs (biocides, parabens, synthetic musks, phthalates, UV-filters) following application of sewage sludge or reclaimed water under field and greenhouse conditions, but also in hydroponic systems. The factors influencing the uptake mechanism in plants were also discussed.

The pleiotropic role of Salinicoccus bacteria in enhancing ROS homeostasis and detoxification metabolism in soybean and oat to cope with pollution of triclosan

Triclosan has been extensively used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products. However, its accumulation represents a real environmental threat. Thus, its phytotoxic impact needs more consideration. Our study was conducted to highlight the phytotoxic effect of triclosan on the growth, ROS homeostasis, and detoxification metabolism of two different plant species i.e., legumes (Glycine max) and grass (Avena sativa). Moreover, we investigated the potentiality of plant growth-promoting bacteria (ST-PGPB) in mitigating the phytotoxic effect of triclosan. Triclosan induced biomass (fresh and dry weights) reduction in both plants, but to a higher extent in oats. This decline was associated with a noticeable increment in the oxidative damage (e.g., MDA and H2O2) and detoxification metabolites such as metallothionein (MTC), phytochelatins (PCs), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). This elevation was associated with a remarkable reduction in both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. On the other hand, the bioactive strain of ST-PGPB, Salinicoccus sp. JzA1 significantly alleviated the harmful effect of triclosan on both soybean and oat plants by enhancing their biomass, photosynthesis, as well as levels of minerals (K, Ca, P, Mn, and Zn). In parallel, a striking quenching in oxidative damage and an obvious improvement in non-enzymatic (polyphenols, tocopherols, flavonoids) and enzymatic antioxidants were observed. Furthermore, Salinicoccus sp. JzA1 augmented the detoxification metabolism by enhancing the levels of phytochelatins, metallothionein, and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in a species-specific manner which is more apparent in soybean rather than in oat plants. To this end, stress mitigating impact of Salinicoccus sp. JzA1 provides a basis to improve the resilience of crop species under cosmetics and personal care products toxicity.

Microbial approaches for pharmaceutical wastewater recycling and management for sustainable development: A multicomponent approach

A microbial-driven approach for effluent treatment, recycling, and management of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) has been undertaken to mitigate the menace of water contamination. Bioremediation processes are mainly considered the first preference in pharmaceutical wastewater recycling and management. PPCPs are reported as one of the primary sources of emerging contaminants in various water matrices, which raises concern and requires efficient management. Their widespread utilization, persistently high level, and resistance to breaking down make them one of the potentially dangerous compounds causing harm to the ecosystem. Continually increasing PPCPs level PPCPs contaminants in water bodies raised concern for human health as they can produce potential risks with harmful and untoward impacts on our health. PPCPs are composed of multiple diverse compounds used by humans and animals, which include biopharmaceuticals, vitamins and nutritional supplements, antibiotics, counter-prescription drugs, cosmetics products, and unused pharmaceutical products. Personal care products are found to be bioaccumulative, reduce water quality and potentially impact ecological health. However, continual exposure to PPCPs in aquatic organisms, impacts their endocrine function disruption, gene toxicity, and antibiotic resistance. Decreased water quality may result in an outbreak of various water-borne diseases, which could have acute or long-term health complications and may result in an outbreak of various water-borne diseases, which could have acute or long-term effects on public and community health. Polluted water consumption by humans and animals produces serious health hazards and increased susceptibility to water-borne diseases such as carcinogenic organic or inorganic contaminants and infectious pathogens present in water bodies. Many water resource recovery facilities working on various conventional and advanced methods involve the utilization of microbes for filtration and advanced oxidation processes. Therefore, there is an immense need for bioremediation techniques facilitated by mixed cultures of bacteria, algae, and other microbes that can be used as an alternative approach for removing pharmaceutical content from effluent. This review highlights the various sources of PPCPs and their impacts on soil and water bodies, resulting in bioaccumulation. Different techniques are utilized to detect PPCPs, and various control strategies imply controlling, recycling, and managing waste.

Occurrence, fate, and potential risk of pharmaceutical pollutants in agriculture: Challenges and environmentally friendly solutions

In recent years, pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) have attained global prevalence. The behavior of PhACs in agricultural soils is complex and depends on several factors, such as the nature of the compounds and their physicochemical characteristics, which affect their fate and potential threats to human health, ecosystems, and the environment. The detection of residual pharmaceutical content is possible in both agricultural soils and environmental matrices. PhACs are commonly found in agricultural soil, with concentrations varying significantly, ranging from as low as 0.048 ng g-1 to as high as 1420.76 mg kg-1. The distribution and persistence of PhACs in agriculture can lead to the leaching of these toxic pollutants into surface water, groundwater, and vegetables/plants, resulting in human health risks and environmental pollution. Biological degradation or bioremediation plays a critical role in environmental protection and efficiently eliminates contamination by hydrolytic and/or photochemical reactions. Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have been investigated as the most recent approach for the treatment of emerging persistent micropollutants, including PhACs, from wastewater sources. MBR- based technologies have proven to be effective in eliminating pharmaceutical compounds, achieving removal rates of up to 100%. This remarkable outcome is primarily facilitated by the processes of biodegradation and metabolization. In addition, phytoremediation (i.e., constructed wetlands), microalgae-based technologies, and composting can be highly efficient in remediating PhACs in the environment. The exploration of key mechanisms involved in pharmaceutical degradation has revealed a range of approaches, such as phytoextraction, phytostabilization, phytoaccumulation, enhanced rhizosphere biodegradation, and phytovolatilization. The well-known advanced/tertiary removal of sustainable sorption by biochar, activated carbon, chitosan, etc. has high potential and yields excellent quality effluents. Adsorbents developed from agricultural by-products have been recognized to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds and are cost-effective and eco-friendly. However, to reduce the potentially harmful impacts of PhACs, it is necessary to focus on advanced technologies combined with tertiary processes that have low cost, high efficiency, and are energy-saving to remove these emerging pollutants for sustainable development.

Review of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) in China's water environments: Implications for environmental fate, transport and health risks

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) are ubiquitous in soil and water system and have become a great issue of environmental and public health concern since the 1990s. However, the occurrence and mechanism(s) of EDCs' migration and transformation at the watershed scale are poorly understood. A review of EDCs pollution in China's major watersheds (and comparison to other countries) has been carried out to better assess these issues and associated ecological risks, compiling a large amount of data. Comparing the distribution characteristics of EDCs in water environments around the world and analyzing various measures and systems for managing EDCs internationally, the significant insights of the review are: 1) There are significant spatial differences and concentration variations of EDCs in surface water and groundwater in China, yet all regions present non-negligible ecological risks. 2) The hyporheic zone, as a transitional zone of surface water and groundwater interaction, can effectively adsorb and degrade EDCs and prevent the migration of high concentrations of EDCs from surface water to groundwater. This suggests that more attention needs to be paid to the role played by critical zones in water environments, when considering the removal of EDCs in water environments. 3) In China, there is a lack of comprehensive and effective regulations to limit and reduce EDCs generated during human activities and their discharge into the water environment. 4) To prevent the deterioration of surface water and groundwater quality, the monitoring and management of EDCs in water environments should be strengthened in China. This review provides a thorough survey of scientifically valid data and recommendations for the development of policies for the management of EDCs in China's water environment.

Dissipation of twelve organic micropollutants in three different soils: Effect of soil characteristics and microbial composition

The dissipation kinetics and half-lives of selected organic micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and others, were systematically investigated and compared among different soil types. While some pollutants (e.g., atorvastatin, valsartan, and bisphenol S) disappeared rapidly in all the tested soils, many of them (e.g., telmisartan, memantine, venlafaxine, and azithromycin) remained persistent. Irrespective of the soil characteristics, venlafaxine showed the lowest dissipation kinetics and the longest half-lives (250 to approximately 500 days) among the stable compounds. The highest first and second-order kinetics were, however, recorded for valsartan (k1; 0.262 day-1) and atorvastatin (k2; 33.8 g μg-1 day-1) respectively. Nevertheless, more than 90% (i.e., DT90) of all the rapidly dissipated compounds (i.e., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) disappeared from the tested soils within a short timescale (i.e., 5-36 days). Dissipation of pollutants that are more susceptible to microbial degradation (e.g., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) seems to be slower for soils possessing the lowest microbial biomass C (Cmic) and total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAtotal), which also found statistically significant. Our results revealing the persistence of several organic pollutants in agricultural soils, which might impact the quality of these soils, the groundwater, and eventually on the related biota, is of high environmental significance.

Emerging environmental health risks associated with the land application of biosolids: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Over 40% of the six million dry metric tons of sewage sludge, often referred to as biosolids, produced annually in the United States is land applied. Biosolids serve as a sink for emerging pollutants which can be toxic and persist in the environment, yet their fate after land application and their impacts on human health have not been well studied. These gaps in our understanding are exacerbated by the absence of systematic monitoring programs and defined standards for human health protection.

METHODS

The purpose of this paper is to call critical attention to the knowledge gaps that currently exist regarding emerging pollutants in biosolids and to underscore the need for evidence-based testing standards and regulatory frameworks for human health protection when biosolids are land applied. A scoping review methodology was used to identify research conducted within the last decade, current regulatory standards, and government publications regarding emerging pollutants in land applied biosolids.

RESULTS

Current research indicates that persistent organic compounds, or emerging pollutants, found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have the potential to contaminate ground and surface water, and the uptake of these substances from soil amended by the land application of biosolids can result in contamination of food sources. Advanced technologies to remove these contaminants from wastewater treatment plant influent, effluent, and biosolids destined for land application along with tools to detect and quantify emerging pollutants are critical for human health protection.

CONCLUSIONS

To address these current risks, there needs to be a significant investment in ongoing research and infrastructure support for advancements in wastewater treatment; expanded manufacture and use of sustainable products; increased public communication of the risks associated with overuse of pharmaceuticals and plastics; and development and implementation of regulations that are protective of health and the environment.

Uptake and Enantiomeric Selectivity of β-Blockers in Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M.) in Soil-Pot Culture

The uptake and translocation of β-blockers in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M.) were investigated by carrying out a 70-day soil-pot cultivation. The root uptake parameters of β-blockers in lettuce decreased in the order of atenolol (ATE) > sotalol (SOT) > propranolol (PRO) with root bioconcentration factors (BCFsroot/soil) of 0.158, 0.136, and 0.096, respectively, which were positively correlated with their water solubility. The BCFroot/soil of β-blockers in tomato was higher than those in lettuce. ATE and PRO were prone to migrate to the aerial parts of tomato with translocation factors of 3.31 and 4.11, respectively. In tomato fruits, the enantiomeric profile of PRO and ATE shifted to that dominated by the more toxic enantiomer, i.e., (S)-PRO and (R)-ATE. The enantiomeric selectivity of β-blockers in the edible parts of lettuce and tomato indicated the potential ecotoxicity of these pharmaceuticals for plants and the human exposure risk via vegetable intake.

Selective accumulation of pharmaceutical residues from 6 different soils by plants: a comparative study on onion, radish, and spinach

The accumulation of six pharmaceuticals of different therapeutic uses has been thoroughly investigated and compared between onion, spinach, and radish plants grown in six soil types. While neutral molecules (e.g., carbamazepine (CAR) and some of its metabolites) were efficiently accumulated and easily translocated to the plant leaves (onion > radish > spinach), the same for ionic (both anionic and cationic) molecules seems to be minor to moderate. The maximum accumulation of CAR crosses 38,000 (onion), 42,000 (radish), and 7000 (spinach) ng g-1 (dry weight) respectively, in which the most majority of them happened within the plant leaves. Among the metabolites, the accumulation of carbamazepine 10,11-epoxide (EPC - a primary CAR metabolite) was approximately 19,000 (onion), 7000 (radish), and 6000 (spinach) ng g-1 (dry weight) respectively. This trend was considerably similar even when all these pharmaceuticals applied together. The accumulation of most other molecules (e.g., citalopram, clindamycin, clindamycin sulfoxide, fexofenadine, irbesartan, and sulfamethoxazole) was restricted to plant roots, except for certain cases (e.g., clindamycin and clindamycin sulfoxide in onion leaves). Our results clearly demonstrated the potential role of this accumulation process on the entrance of pharmaceuticals/metabolites into the food chain, which eventually becomes a threat to associated living biota.

Uptake of different pharmaceuticals in soil and mycorrhizal artichokes from wastewater

The irrigation with treated wastewater is among the main anthropogenic sources for the release of pharmaceuticals (PhACs) into the soils and their translocation into crops, with possible toxic and adverse effects on humans. The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can be employed for the reduction of organic soil pollutants, even if their efficiency depends on the mycorrhizal fungi, the plant colonized, and the type and concentration of the contaminant. This study aimed to evaluate the uptake of PhACs from wastewaters of different qualities used for the irrigation of mycorrhizal artichoke plants, the presence in their edible parts and the role of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The research was carried out on artichoke plants not inoculated and inoculated with two different AMF and irrigated with treated wastewater (TW), groundwater (GW) or GW spiked with different and selected PhACs (SGW). The inocula were a crude inoculum of Septoglomus viscosum (MSE) and a commercial inoculum of Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae (MSY). The results of the present study showed that carbamazepine and fluconazole were found in the artichoke only with SGW irrigation. The mycorrhizal plants showed a reduction of the pharmaceutical's uptake, and within the AMF, MSE was more effective in preventing their absorption and translocation.

Modeling the fate of ionizable pharmaceutical and personal care products (iPPCPs) in soil-plant systems: pH and speciation

A model was developed to simulate the pH-dependent speciation and fate of ionizable pharmaceutical and personal care products (iPPCPs) in soils and their plant uptake during thedt application of reclaimed wastewater to agricultural soils. The simulation showed that pH plays an important role in regulating the plant uptake of iPPCPs, i.e., ibuprofen (IBU; with a carboxylic group), triclosan (TCS; phenolic group), and fluoxetine (FXT; amine group) as model compounds. It took 89-487 days for various iPPCPs to reach the steady-state concentrations in soil and plant tissues. The simulated steady-state concentrations of iPPCPs in plant tissues at pH 9 is 2.2-2.3, 2.5-2.6, and 1.07-1.08 times that at pH 5 for IBU, TCS, and FXT, respectively. Assuming sorption only for neutral compounds led to miscalculation of iPPCPs concentrations in plant tissues by up to one and half orders magnitude. Efflux of compounds in soil, lettuce leaf, and soybean pods was primarily contributed by their degradation in soil and dilution due to plant tissue growth. Overall, the results demonstrated the importance of considering pH and speciation of iPPCPs when simulating their fate in the soil-plant system and plant uptake.

Uptake and Transport of Different Concentrations of PPCPs by Vegetables

In many parts of the world, water resources are scarce or even extremely scarce, and the reuse of water resources has become mainstream in today's world. Many regions use treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation, aquaculture, and other activities. However, in recent years, wastewater has been found to contain large amounts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Therefore, there is a potential risk of PPCPs being transported in the environment and affecting human health. In this study, we compared the uptake, transport, and accumulation of 27 PPCPs in three types of sprouts (radish, buckwheat, and okra).The bioaccumulation of amantadine, diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine maleate, sibutramine, hemosibutramine, chlorosibutramine, N-monomethyl sibutramine, N, N-desmethyl sibutramine, and carbamazepine was found to be significantly higher in plants grown for 12 days in media containing 0.5, 5.0, and 50.0 ng/mL PPCPs. With increasing concentration of PPCPs in the culture solution, the amount of PPCPs absorbed by plants and the degree of accumulation also showed an increasing trend. At the same time, it was demonstrated that there was an obvious uptake transfer phenomenon of PPCPs by plants, and the trend of uptake transfer became more and more obvious as the concentration of external environmental pollutants increased. In addition, amantadine, chlorpheniramine maleate, carbamazepine, N, N-desmethyl sibutramine, hemosibutramine, and chlorosibutramine showed more active translocation in some plants (TF > 1.0).

Genetic bioaugmentation with triclocarban-catabolic plasmid effectively removes triclocarban from wastewater

Triclocarban, one of the emerging pollutants, has been accumulating, and it is frequently detected in wastewater. Due to its toxicity and persistence, the efficient removal of triclocarban from wastewater systems is challenging. Genetic bioaugmentation with transferable catabolic plasmids has been considered to be a long-lasting method to clean up pollutants in continuous flow wastewater treatment systems. In this study, bioaugmentation with Pseudomonas putida KT2440, harboring the transferrable triclocarban-catabolic plasmid pDCA-1-gfp-tccA2, rapidly converted 50 μM triclocarban in wastewater into 3,4-dichloroaniline and 4-chloroaniline, which are further mineralized more easily. RT-qPCR results showed that the ratio of the copy number of pDCA-1-gfp-tccA2 to the cell number of strain KT2440 gradually increased during genetic bioaugmentation, suggesting horizontal transfer and proliferation of the plasmid. By using DNA stable isotope probing (SIP) and amplicon sequencing, OTU86 (Escherichia-Shigella), OTU155 (Citrobacter), OTU5 (Brucella), and OTU15 (Enterobacteriaceae) were found to be the potential recipients of the plasmid pDCA-1-gfp-tccA2 in the wastewater bacterial community. Furthermore, three transconjugants in the genera of Escherichia, Citrobacter, and Brucella showing triclocarban-degrading abilities were isolated from the wastewater. This study develops a new method for removing triclocarban from wastewater and provides insights into the environmental behavior of transferrable catabolic plasmids in bacterial community in wastewater systems.

Triclosan and triclocarban as potential risk factors of colitis and colon cancer: Roles of gut microbiota involved

In recent decades there has been a dramatic increase in the incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestinal tissues and a major risk factor of developing colon cancer. While accumulating evidence supports that the rapid increase of IBD is mainly caused by exposure to environmental risk factors, the identities of the risk factors, as well as the mechanisms connecting environmental exposure with IBD, remain largely unknown. Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) are high-volume chemicals that are used as antimicrobial ingredients in consumer and industrial products. They are ubiquitous contaminants in the environment and are frequently detected in human populations. Recent studies showed that exposure to TCS/TCC, at human exposure-relevant doses, increases the severity of colitis and exacerbates colon tumorigenesis in mice, suggesting that they could be risk factors of IBD and associated diseases. The gut toxicities of these compounds require the presence of gut microbiota, since they fail to induce colonic inflammation in mice lacking the microbiota. Regarding the functional roles of the microbiota involved, gut commensal microbes and specific microbial β-glucuronidase (GUS) enzymes mediate colonic metabolism of TCS, leading to metabolic reactivation of TCS in the colon and contributing to its subsequent gut toxicity. Overall, these results support that these commonly used compounds could be environmental risk factors of IBD and associated diseases through gut microbiota-dependent mechanisms.

Desorption of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs from different stabilized sludge types across pH

Pharmaceutical and illicit drug residues in sewage sludge may present important risks following direct application to agricultural soils, potentially resulting in uptake by plants. Leaching/desorption tests were performed on different types of stabilized sewage sludge originating from multiple treatment technologies in the Slovak Republic. Acid rain and base-rich condition of soil with different pH conditions were simulated to model the effect of widely varying pH (pH 2, 4, 7, 9, and 12) on the leaching/desorption of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs. Twenty-nine of 93 target analytes were found above the limit of quantification in sludge or associated leachates. Total desorbed amounts of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs ranged from 810 to 4000 µg/kg, and 110 to 3600 µg/kg of the dry mass of anaerobic and aerobic sludge, respectively. Desorbed fractions were calculated as these values are normalized to initial sludge concentration and, therefore, were more suitable for qualitative description of the behavior of individual compounds. Using principal component analysis, qualitative analysis of the desorbed fraction confirmed the differences among sludge types, pharmaceuticals, and desorption pH. Desorbed fractions could not be related to the octanol/water distribution coefficient. Desorbed fractions also did not reflect the expected ionization of studied molecules unless converted into their relative values. Generally, the lowest mobility was observed within the environmentally relevant pH range of 4-9, and high pH generally resulted in high desorption, especially in anaerobically stabilized sludges.

Characterization of Plant Accumulation of Pharmaceuticals from Soils with Their Concentration in Soil Pore Water

Predicting plant uptake of pharmaceuticals from soils is very challenging because many pharmaceuticals are ionizable compounds, which experience highly variable sorption/desorption and transformation processes in soils. This study aimed to elucidate how the equilibrium between sorbed and dissolved phases influences radish uptake of 15 pharmaceuticals from three soils with different properties. After 30 days of uptake, the accumulation of acetaminophen, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, carbadox, trimethoprim, and triclosan in radish ranked as Riddles > Capac > Spinks soil. In contrast, radish accumulation of caffeine, lincomycin, monensin, tylosin, sulfadiazine, and sulfamethoxazole exhibited the opposite order of Riddles < Capac < Spinks soil. Oxytetracycline and estrone demonstrated similar accumulation in radish grown in the three soils. Accumulation of pharmaceuticals in radish demonstrated no apparent relation with their concentration in soils. However, we identified strong positive correlation between pharmaceutical accumulation in radish and their corresponding concentration in soil pore water. These results reveal that pharmaceutical in soil pore water is the dominant fraction bioavailable to plant uptake. Relatively constant root concentration factors (RCFs) on the basis of pharmaceutical concentration in soil pore water, compared to the highly variable RCFs derived from soils, suggest that pore water-based RCF is superior for describing pharmaceutical accumulation in plants grown in soils. We recommend that pharmaceuticals in soil pore water should be evaluated and included in modeling their uptake by plants.

Coordination of bacterial biomarkers with the dominant microbes enhances triclosan biodegradation in soil amended with food waste compost and cow dung compost

Increasing concerns regarding the micropollutant triclosan (TCS) derive from its potential threats to human health and ecological security. Compost addition have been verified to be effective in soil remediation, however, the biodegradation of TCS under compost amendment in soil remain unclear. This study investigated the removal of TCS in soils amended with food waste compost (FS), cow dung compost (CS) and sludge compost (SS), respectively, explored the key TCS-degraders and biological mechanisms of TCS removal. Compost addition significantly enhanced the removal of TCS (p < 0.05) in the order of FS > CS > SS. The dosage of 20% (w/w) was the most efficient one and the ultimate concentrations of TCS were decreased by 76.67%, 67.90% and 56.79% compared with CK, respectively. The abundance of key dominant bacterial genus (7 in FS and 4 in CS) and fungal genus (3 in FS and CS) was stimulated due to the increase of soil nutrient factors (including dissolved organic carbon, DOC; soil organic matter, SOM; ammonium nitrogen, NH₄⁺; nitrate nitrogen, NO₃^-) and the decrease of pH. A negative correlation between these dominant microbes and TCS concentration indicated their potential effect on TCS degradation. A total of four bacterial biomarkers, namely Saccharomonospora, Aequorivita, Bacillaceae and Fodinicurvataceae (both at family level) were the key TCS-degraders. Structural equation model (SEM) indicated that the improvement of soil nutrient factors in FS and CS promoted TCS biodegradation by improving the activity of bacterial biomarkers, as while, the key dominant microbes showed good tolerance to TCS stress. However, there were no significant biological effects on TCS in SS group. Network analysis further confirmed that it was the coordination of bacterial biomarkers with the dominant microbes that enhanced TCS biodegradation in soil amended with food waste compost and cow dung compost.

Fate of contaminants of emerging concern in the reclaimed wastewater-soil-plant continuum

Reclaimed wastewater irrigation, a common agricultural practice in water-scarce regions, chronically exposes the agricultural environment to a wide range of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) including pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Here we provide new data and insights into the processes governing the translocation of CECs in the irrigation water-soil-plant continuum based on a comprehensive dataset from 445 commercial fields irrigated with reclaimed wastewater. We report on CEC exposures in irrigation water, soils, and edible produce (leafy greens, carrots, potatoes, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, and citrus fruits). Our data show that CEC concentrations in irrigation water and their physiochemical properties (mainly charge and lipophilicity) are the main factors governing their translocation and accumulation in the soil-plant continuum. CECs exhibiting the highest detection frequency in plants (lamotrigine, venlafaxine, and carbamazepine) showed a reduction in their leaf accumulation factor with increasing soil organic matter content. The higher soil organic matter likely reduced the available CEC concentration in the soil solution due to soil-CEC interactions, leading to reduced uptake. Interestingly, the concentration of carbamazepine in the leaves showed a saturation-like trend when plotted against its concentration in the soils. This probably resulted from steady-state conditions when uptake equals in-planta decomposition. Our data indicate that due to continuous reclaimed wastewater irrigation, the soil acts as a sink for CECs. CECs in the soil reservoir can be desorbed into the soil solution during the rainy season and be taken up by rain-fed crops.

Comparative meta-analysis of organic contaminants in sewage sludge from the United States and China

Characterizing the occurrence of organic contaminants (OCs) of environmental health concern in municipal sewage sludges is essential for safe handling and disposal of these abundant materials. This meta-analysis aimed to (i) summarize the extent of studies performed on the chemical composition of sewage sludges from China and the U.S., the world's two largest chemical producers, (ii) identify chemical groups of priority concern, (iii) quantitatively compare chemical abundance in sludge between nations, (iv) determine longitudinal contaminant accumulation trends in sludge, and (v) identify data gaps with regard to OC concentrations in sludge. A literature search was conducted on concentrations of OCs in U.S. sludges produced during treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater and compared statistically to contaminant levels in Chinese sludge abstracted from a recently established database. Longitudinal trends of OC occurrence were interpreted in the context of national chemical production, usage statistics, and regulations. A total of 105 studies on OCs in U.S. sewage sludge were found, while a total of 159 had been found in China. Among 1175 OCs monitored for, 23% of all analytes had been monitored in both countries (n = 269), 41% (n = 480) in China only, and the remaining 36% (n = 426) in the U.S. only. On average, concentrations of OCs were 4.0 times higher in U.S. than in Chinese sewage sludge, with the highest detection being observed for alkylphenol ethoxylates. Data from a new binational database on toxic OCs in sewage sludges suggest and reiterates the need for additional chemical monitoring in both countries, risk assessments for emerging OCs contained in sludges destined for application on land, and stronger enforcement of sludge disposal restrictions in China, where as much as 40% of sludge is currently being dumped improperly.

Pharmaceuticals as Emerging Pollutants in the Reclaimed Wastewater Used in Irrigation and Their Effects on Plants, Soils, and Groundwater

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were investigated in five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), groundwater, irrigated soils, and plants in Amman and Al-Balqa governorates in Jordan. PPCPs were extracted from water samples by solid-phase extraction (SPE) and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS). Carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, ceftiofur, diclofenac, erythromycin, lincomycin, ofloxacin, pyrimthamine, spiramycin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, testosterone, trimethoprim, and thiamphenicol were detected in all raw wastewaters in μg/L, whereas 45 PPCPs were below the detection limits (<0.02 μg/L) in all samples. Na`ur and Abu Nuseir WWTPs showed high PPCPs removal efficiencies in comparison with AL-Baqa`a, Salt, and Fuhais-Mahis WWTPs. Boqorreya spring showed signs of contamination by Salt WWTP effluents as a result of mixing. Irrigation with effluents showed higher carbamazepine concentrations in soils at the top soil layers (0 to 20 cm) in all farms than its concentrations at the root zone (20 to 40 cm) by using drip irrigation system with various plants. In plants, carbamazepine concentration was only detected in high concentration level in mint leaves. In the same farm, diclofenac concentration was detected only in olives and not in twigs and leaves, indicating a high rate of plant uptake especially during the olive’s growth period. Furthermore, plant fruits, leaves, and stems left on the farm after harvesting are generally consumed by cattle, which means entering the food chain of humans.

Contaminants of emerging concerns in recycled water: Fate and risks in agroecosystems

Recycled water (RW) has been increasingly recognized as a valuable source of water for alleviating the global water crisis. When RW is used for agricultural irrigation, many contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are introduced into the agroecosystem. The ubiquity of CECs in field soil, combined with the toxic, carcinogenic, or endocrine-disrupting nature of some CECs, raises significant concerns over their potential risks to the environment and human health. Understanding such risks and delineating the fate processes of CECs in the water-soil-plant continuum contributes to the safe reuse of RW in agriculture. This review summarizes recent findings and provides an overview of CECs in the water-soil-plant continuum, including their occurrence in RW and irrigated soil, fate processes in agricultural soil, offsite transport including runoff and leaching, and plant uptake, metabolism, and accumulation. The potential ecological and human health risks of CECs are also discussed. Studies to date have shown limited accumulation of CECs in irrigated soils and plants, which may be attributed to multiple attenuation processes in the rhizosphere and plant, suggesting minimal health risks from RW-fed food crops. However, our collective understanding of CECs is rather limited and knowledge of their offsite movement and plant accumulation is particularly scarce for field conditions. Given a large number of CECs and their occurrence at trace levels, it is urgent to develop strategies to prioritize CECs so that future research efforts are focused on CECs with elevated risks for offsite contamination or plant accumulation. Irrigating specific crops such as feed crops and fruit trees may be a viable option to further minimize potential plant accumulation under field conditions. To promote the beneficial reuse of RW in agriculture, it is essential to understand the human health and ecological risks imposed by CEC mixtures and metabolites.

A novel multiscale biophysical model to predict the fate of ionizable compounds in the soil-plant continuum

Soil pollution from emerging contaminants poses a significant threat to water resources management and food production. The development of numerical models to describe the reactive transport of chemicals in both soil and plant is of paramount importance to elaborate mitigation strategies. To this aim, in the present study, a multiscale biophysical model is developed to predict the fate of ionizable compound in the soil-plant continuum. The modeling framework connects a multi-organelles model to describe processes at the cell level with a semi-mechanistic soil-plant model, which includes the widely used Richards-based solver, HYDRUS. A Bayesian probabilistic framework is used to calibrate and assess the capability of the model in reproducing the observations from an experiment on the translocation of five pharmaceuticals in green pea plants. Results show satisfactory fitting performance and limited predictive uncertainty. The subsequent validation with the cell model indicates that the estimated soil-plant parameters preserve a physically realistic meaning, and their calibrated values are comparable with the existing literature values, thus confirming the overall reliability of the analysis. Model results further suggest that pH conditions in both soil and xylem play a crucial role in the uptake and translocation of ionizable compounds.

Distinct uptake and accumulation profiles of triclosan in youdonger (Brassica campestris subsp. Chinensis var. communis) under two planting systems: Evidence from 14C tracing techniques

Triclosan is a widely used biocide against microorganisms and is ubiquitously distributed in the environment. Triclosan can be accumulated into plants from soil and hydroponic media. However, little information is currently available on the comparative fate of triclosan in plants under soil and hydroponics cultivation conditions and factors governing uptake. Therefore, this study was designed to comparatively elucidate the uptake mechanism of ¹⁴C-triclosan in youdonger (Brassica campestris subsp. Chinensis var. communis) grown under different soils and hydroponics and clarify dominant uptake factors. Results showed that 77.2% of ¹⁴C were accumulated in youdonger grown in a hydroponic system, while only 1.24%-2.33% were accumulated in the two soil-planting systems. In addition, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of ¹⁴C-triclosan in soil-plant systems was approximately 400-fold smaller than that in the hydroponics. In the soil-planting system, a strong linear correlation was found between concentrations of triclosan in soil pore water and youdonger plant (R² > 0.85, p < 0.01) at different incubation times. Therefore, triclosan in pore water might be a good indicator to estimate its accumulation in plants and is significantly affected by soil pH, clay, and organic matter contents. The estimated average dietary intakes of triclosan for youdonger grown in hydroponic and soil-planting systems were estimated to be 1.31 ng day^-1 kg^-1 and 0.05-0.12 ng day^-1 kg^-1, respectively, much lower than the acceptable dietary intakes of triclosan (83 μg day^-1 kg^-1), indicating no significant human health risks from youdonger consumption. This study provided insights into uptake routes of triclosan into youdonger plants from both soil and hydroponic systems, bioavailability of triclosan in different soils, and further assessment of human exposure to triclosan from youdonger.

Worldwide Traceability of Antibiotic Residues from Livestock in Wastewater and Soil: A Systematic Review

Abstract

The use of antibiotics in animal production are widely used for disease treatment, health protection, and as growth promoters. Common antibiotics used in veterinary medicine are excreted and eliminated through the sewage system, contaminating water and soil with negative effects on agricultural activities. This systematic review focuses on the trend of research works on antibiotic residues, evaluating antibiotics used in livestock production and their excretion in animal products and in environmental matrices such as water and soil. Our database was composed of 165 articles, reporting the concentration of antibiotic residues found in the environment, livestock (cow, sheep, pig, horse, chicken, rabbit, goat), aquatic and terrestrial animal tissues, animal products (milk and eggs), wastewater, and soil. The documents were obtained from Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania. A descriptive analysis of antibiotic residues found worldwide was analyzed according to each of the variables used such as antibiotic family, name, concentration (% and mg/kg or ppm), and country and continent where the residue was found. The descriptive analysis was carried out using the “describe” function of psych package and pirate plots were drawn. According to our study, the main antibiotics used worldwide in animal production are sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones, penicillin, and cephalosporins. At present, despite the trends of increased regulations on the use of antibiotics worldwide, antibiotics are still utilized in food animal production, and are present in water and soil, then, there is still the misuse of antibiotics in many countries. We need to become aware that antibiotic contamination is a global problem, and we are challenged to reduce and improve their use.

Different tree-ring width sensitivities to satellite-based soil moisture from dry, moderate and wet pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) stands across a southeastern distribution margin

Associations of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) radial growth with satellite-based soil moisture (SM) during the intensive tree growth period over a 30-year time span (1980-2010) were analyzed. This study included tree-ring width (TRW) chronologies from 22 stands located in four southeastern (SE) European countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria), which were grouped into three wetness groups (WGs): dry (<650 mm), moderate (650-750 mm), and wet (>750 mm), following the annual sum of precipitation. High correlation strengths during the intensive growth period-late spring and early summer months (April to June) was noted, which was opposite to the trend in late summer months. Variations in detrended TRW (TRWi) sensitivity to SM were also observed among the WGs. Specifically, the TRWi chronologies from the dry and wet WGs provided a greater number of significant correlations (p < 0.01) than trees from the moderate WG did. In wetter stands, TRWi correlated more negatively in the wettest (spring) months, while the correlation was weaker in summer months; these trends were opposite to those of trees growing in drier conditions that had the strongest responses to SM. A generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) based on 38 variables indicated that the fit for SM and radial growth was as strong as the fits for other traditionally measured parameters (temperature, precipitation, and river water level) and calculated drought indices (standardized precipitation index and the Ellenberg index) and TRW. Additionally, radial growth chronologies from drier sites had stronger fits with surrounding environmental factors. In conclusion, our findings suggest that SM can potentially be used as a reliable remote sensing indicator of the soil wetness in oak forests, which affects tree productivity and radial growth patterns and provides a new opportunity in dendrochronology research on larger scales.

Antibiotic fate in an artificial-constructed urban river planted with the algae Microcystis aeruginosa and emergent hydrophyte

The behavior and removal of six antibiotics, that is, azithromycin, clarithromycin, sulfathiazole, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline, in an artificial-controllable urban river (ACUR) were investigated. The ACUR was constructed to form five artificial eco-systems by planting three emergent hydrophytes and Microcystis aeruginosa: (1) Control; (2) MA: M. aeruginosa only; (3) MA-J-C: M. aeruginosa combined with Juncus effusus and Cyperus alternifolius; (4) MA-C-A: M. aeruginosa combined with C. alternifolius and Acorus calamus L.; (5) MA-A-J: M. aeruginosa combined with A. calamus L. and J. effusus. The MA-C-A system achieved the best removal of azithromycin and clarithromycin after 15-day test with the final concentrations 0.92 and 0.83 μg/L. The contents of ciprofloxacin and tetracycline in sediment were highest, up to 1453 and 1745 ng/g. The antibiotic plant bioaccumulation was higher in roots rather than the shoots (stem and leaves). No target antibiotics were detected in algae cells. The combination of hybrid hydrophytes had a certain effect on the removal of antibiotics, and thus selecting appropriate hydrophytes in urban rivers could greatly improve water quality. The overall removal of six antibiotics was greatly improved by the ACUR containing the hybrid hydrophytes and the algae, indicating a synergistic effect on antibiotic removal. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Controllable-mobile artificial eco-systems were developed with emergent hydrophytes and M. aeruginosa. The M. aeruginosa + Cyperus alternifolius + Acorus calamus L. system removed azithromycin and clarithromycin most at the end of tests. Emergent hydrophytes and M. aeruginosa have a synergistic effect on the removal of antibiotics. The combination of emergent hydrophytes did play an important role in the removal of antibiotics. The artificial eco-systems containing the hybrid hydrophytes and the algae could greatly improve the overall removal of antibiotics.

Phytoextraction of ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxaxole by cattail and switchgrass

Cattail (Typha latifolia L.) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) can effectively remove inorganic contaminants from soils and biosolids, but their role in the attenuation of organic contaminants, such as antimicrobials, is currently poorly understood. Uptake by plants is one of several mechanisms by which plant-assisted attenuation of antimicrobials can be achieved. The objectives of this growth room study were to evaluate the plant uptake of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and examine their partitioning between plant roots and aboveground biomass (AGB). Plant uptake of the two ¹⁴C labeled antimicrobials was studied at two environmentally relevant concentrations (5 and 10 μg L^-1). Plants were destructively sampled every 3-4 d during the 21-d growth period. Accumulation of CIP and SMX in both plant species was greater in the roots than in the AGB. The percentage uptake values of the two antimicrobials were significantly greater for cattail (34% for CIP, 20% for SMX) than for switchgrass (10% for both CIP and SMX). Translocation factors of the two antimicrobials were <1 for both plants, indicating slow movement of the antimicrobials from the roots to the shoots. For cattail roots, the BCF for CIP (1.58 L g^-1) was significantly greater than that for SMX (0.8 L g^-1). By comparison, BCFs for switchgrass roots did not differ significantly between CIP (0.88 L g^-1) and SMX (1.13 L g^-1). These results indicate greater potential for cattail to phytoextract CIP and SMX and significantly contribute to the attenuation of these antimicrobials in systems designed for the phytoremediation of contaminated wastewater.

Potential long-term developmental toxicity of in utero and lactational exposure to Triclocarban (TCC) in hampering ovarian folliculogenesis in rat offspring

Triclocarban (TCC), an antimicrobial compound commonly added to a wide range of household and personal hygiene care products, is one of the most prevalent endocrine-disrupting substances (EDS). This study was conducted to elucidate whether in utero and lactational exposure to TCC could adversely affect folliculogenesis and the onset of puberty in female rat offspring. Twenty pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were equally divided into Control and TCC dam groups (supplemented daily with drinking water enriched with 0.5 mg/L of TCC) from gestational day5 to postnatal day21 (PND21). Female offspring, 20 from control and 20 from TCC dams, were subdivided into 4 subgroups (PND21, PND28, PND35 & PND42). The day of vaginal opening and first estrous cycle were determined. Ovarian sections of the offspring were processed for H&E staining and for immunohistochemical expression of Ki67, Caspase-3 and androgen receptors (AR) on the granulosa cells of ovarian follicles. Follicular count and atretic index were assessed besides, serum estradiol, progesterone, FSH and LH, C-reactive protein (CRP), malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured. TCC offspring exhibited a significant delay in the onset of puberty and impedance of normal transition of the primordial follicles to more developed ones with altered cyctoarchitecture. Also, TCC decreased follicular count, proliferation and gonado-somatic index while it increased atretic index, apoptosis and AR of the granulosa cells along with disturbance of the feminine hormonal profile and oxidant/antioxidant balance. This study highlighted the potential long-term consequences of in utero and lactational exposure to TCC on the postnatal development of the ovary in rat offspring.

Effect of eight common Brazilian drugs on Lemna minor and Salvinia auriculata growth

The growth of two species of macrophytes (Lemna minor and Salvinia auriculata) under the effect of a mixture of amoxicillin, caffeine, carbamazepine, dipyrone, ibuprofen, losartan, omeprazole, and tenivastatin was investigated by bioassay. Three concentration levels were utilized in this study (10, 200, and 500 μg L^-1) using a growth inhibition test based on the OECD 221/2006 guidelines. The frond number, total area, and chlorophyll a level were selected as suitable end points. For L. minor, at all concentrations, a significant difference in the total frond number was observed and the growth inhibition varied from 30 to 70% at the low and high concentrations, respectively. No significant growth change was observed to S. auriculata exposed to the mixture of drugs. Thus, individual drug tests were performed for L. minor which demonstrated stimulation in growth, when exposed to most drugs individually, except tenivastatin which was identified as the drug responsible for the significant growth inhibition seen in the mixture. The L. minor enhanced growth was probably caused by N molecule transformation to ammonium and nitrate, essential nutrients for plants.

Photocatalytic degradation of four insecticides and their main generated transformation products in soil and pepper crop irrigated with reclaimed agro-wastewater under natural sunlight

This work is the first-ever study of the concurrence of four insecticides (chlorantraniliprole, imidacloprid, pirimicarb and thiamethoxam) and their main transformation products (TPs) in soil and pepper crop irrigated with reclaimed and non-reclaimed water under agricultural field conditions. Field experiments were conducted using different irrigation supplies: control water (CW), wastewater polluted with phytosanitary commercial products containing the studied insecticides (WW) and reclaimed wastewater after a photocatalytic processing with TiO₂/Na₂S₂O₈ at pilot plant under sunlight (RWW). Photocatalytic treatments removed most of the insecticides and their TPs generated during the photoperiod. Neither target insecticides nor their TPs were detected in pepper samples when CW and RWW were used as irrigation source, whereas the four insecticides and two TPs were detected when WW was used. In the experiment carried out with WW, all insecticides and eight TPs were detected in soil samples. The impact of using reclaimed water on the quality of pepper crop was also assessed, showing barely any significant difference.

Triclocarban Exposure Exaggerates Spontaneous Colonic Inflammation in Il-10-/- Mice

Triclocarban (3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide, TCC) is a high-volume chemical used as an antimicrobial ingredient in many consumer and personal care products. In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration removed TCC from over-the-counter hand washing products. However, TCC remains approved to use in many other products and is a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment; furthermore, many common food crops can efficiently accumulate environmental TCC, resulting in potential human exposure through oral ingestion of contaminated food products. Therefore, human exposure to TCC could be a long-lasting and serious problem. A better understanding of its impact on human health could lead to important impact for public health and regulatory policy. Using a spontaneous colonic inflammation model in Il-10-/- mice, here we demonstrate that exposure to TCC, at doses relevant to human exposure, exaggerates spontaneous colonic inflammation in Il-10-/- mice, with reduced colon length, increase fecal concentration of lipocalin 2, enhanced gene expression of Il-6 and Ifn-γ in the colon, and exaggerated crypt damage in the colon. Collectively, these results support that TCC could be a potential environmental risk factor of colitis and associated gut diseases.

The effect of PFOs on the uptake and translocation of emerging contaminants by crops cultivated under soil and soilless conditions

The Mediterranean is a region of substantial agriculture production that faces concurrent environmental stresses and freshwater pollution given the occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs). Among these pollutants, the surface-active substances have been suggested to enhance the bioavailability of other ECs. This research evaluates a comparative uptake and translocation assessment of irrigation exposure to atenolol (ATN, 60 µg/L), carbamazepine (CBZ, 60 µg/L) and triclosan (TCS, 30 µg/L) alone vs. these combined with perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, 10 µg/L) under semifield (i.e., soil experimental set) vs. hydroponics (i.e., soilless experimental set) growing conditions with lettuce, radish and tomato plants. Both experimental sets revealed efficient root uptake and translocation for the three ECs regardless of their co-existence with PFOS. The overall results of the uptake and translocation of the ECs in the lettuce and tomato plants suggested a simultaneous treatment-plant organ interaction, which was not affected by PFOS being present in both experimental sets. PFOS in irrigation water did not increase cellular perviousness to the other three ECs. These observations support the hypothesis of factors other than PFOS being responsible for the differential bioaccumulation and translocation potentials seen in both experimental sets. However, the radish plants co-irrigated with PFOS brought about increased movement of ECs from roots to aerial parts, more specifically ATN and CBZ in the soil experimental set, and ATN and TCS in the soilless set. These results support the notion that factors inherent to the physiological characteristics of this root vegetable contributed to ECs' increased tendency to move from roots to aerial parts. Despite the three ECs efficiently accumulating, the risk to humans from eating the edible parts of these plants grown under soil or soilless conditions was low.

Organic farming: Does it contribute to contaminant-free produce and ensure food safety?

Organic farming for higher ecological and human health benefits has been adopted in about 186 countries, covering a total area of 71.5 Mha worldwide. Because of the associated practices, the flows of several environmental pollutants into the organic products threaten food safety and human health. The contaminants that occur at higher concentrations in organic produce include persistent organic pollutants (61.3-436.9 ng g^-1 lamb meat, and 0.28 pg g^-1-2.75 ng g^-1 bovine meat), heavy metals (0.5-33.0 mg kg^-1 lettuce), organochlorine pesticides (11-199 μg g^-1 carrots), cyclodienes, hexachlorocyclohexanes, hexabromocyclododecane (2-3 times higher than in conventionally produced porcine meat), hexachlorobenzene (1.38-14.49 ng g^-1 fat in milk), and non-brominated flame retardants (1.3-3.2 times higher than in conventional produce of greenhouse-grown tomato and cucumber). Moreover, some pollutants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with a longer half-life (1.50-9.10 yrs) are reported to occur in several organic products. In fact, several legacy persistent organic pollutants are known for their significant trophic magnification in an urban terrestrial ecosystem. In addition, many plant functionalities are adversely affected in organic farming. Therefore, the long-term usage of organic products containing such pollutants poses a significant threat to human health. The major limitation in organic livestock production is the severe shortage of organic feed. Several variable standards and technical regulations set by the government and private agencies are the major obstacles in the global marketing of organic products. The present review critically addresses the impact of organic farming on hidden risks due to the use of composts as the amendment resources that enhance the phytoaccumulation and trophic transfer of pollutants, the functional diversity of the ecosystems, and poor harmonization among the policies and regulations in different countries for organic farming. The future directions of research have been suggested to mitigate unintended flows of pollutants into the organic products.

Irrigation with secondary municipal-treated wastewater: Potential effects, accumulation of typical antibiotics and grain quality responses in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Using secondary treated wastewater to irrigate paddies presents an exposure pathway for antibiotics to enter the terrestrial food chain. To date, there has been no information on the biochemical reactions and antibiotic uptake in rice plants irrigated with secondary treated wastewater. The present study investigated antibiotic uptake and concentration-response trends in rice tissues and evaluated the effects of typical antibiotics (tetracycline, roxithromycin, ofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole) on rice growth, grain yield and quality, and rice physiobiochemical characters via irrigation using treated wastewater augmented with varying concentrations (0-500 µg/L) in paddies. The results showed that the antibiotic accumulation in rice plants irrigated with treated wastewater was limited, and the studied antibiotics were not detected in rice grains (edible parts). The ability of rice to withstand certain antibiotics and grow in a healthy manner is attributed to the capacity to maintain reasonably normal photosynthesis activity and to elevate antioxidative defenses. The highest antibiotic concentration (500 µg/L) did not reduce the processing quality of the rice grain, but it enhanced the cooking and eating quality. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that secondary treated wastewater for paddy irrigation is an alternative water resource securing protection from the environment and rice grain quality.

A review of antiepileptic drugs: Part 1 occurrence, fate in aquatic environments and removal during different treatment technologies

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are the main treatment for people with epilepsy. However, in recent years, more and more people are using them for other indications such as: migraine, chronic neuropathic pain, and mood disorders. Consequently, the prescriptions and consumption of these drugs are increasing worldwide. In WWTPs, AEDs can resist degradation processes, such as photodegradation, chemical degradation and/or biodegradation. Until now, only constructed wetlands and photocatalysis have shown good removal rates of AEDs from wastewater. However, their effectiveness depends on the specific conditions used during the treatment. Since the consumption of AEDs has increased in the last decade and their degradation in WWTPs is poor, these drugs have been largely introduced into the environment through the discharge of municipal and/or hospital effluents. Once in the environment, AEDs are distributed in the water phase, as suspended particles or in the sediments, suggesting that these drugs have a high potential for groundwater contamination. In this first part of the AEDs review is designed to fill out the current knowledge gap about the occurrence, fate and removal of these drugs in the aquatic environment. This is a review that emphasizes the characteristics of AEDs as emerging contaminants.

Modeling the fate and human health impacts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in reclaimed wastewater irrigation for agriculture

Wastewater reclamation and reuse for agriculture have attracted a great deal of interest, due to water stress caused by rapid increase in human population and agricultural water demand as well as climate change. However, the application of treated wastewater for irrigation can lead to the accumulation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the agricultural crops, grazing animals, and consequently to human dietary exposure. In this study, a model was developed to simulate the fate of five PPCPs; triclosan (TCS), carbamazepine (CBZ), naproxen (NPX), gemfibrozil (GFB), and fluoxetine (FXT) during wastewater reuse for agriculture, and potential human dietary exposure and health risk. In a reclaimed wastewater-irrigated grazing farm growing alfalfa, it took 100-535 days for PPCPs to achieve the steady-state concentrations of 1.43 × 10^-6, 4.73 × 10^-5, 1.17 × 10^-6, 1.53 × 10^-5, and 7.38 × 10^-6 mg/kg for TCS, CBZ, NPX, GFB, and FXT in soils, respectively. The accumulated concentration of PPCPs in the plant (alfalfa) and grazing animals (beef) ranged 2.86 × 10^-7- 4.02 × 10^-3 and 4.39 × 10^-15- 6.27 × 10^-7 mg/kg, respectively. Human dietary exposure to these compounds through beef consumption was calculated to be 1.67 × 10^-18- 1.74 × 10^-10 mg/kg bodyweight/d, much lower than the acceptable daily intake (ADI). Similar results were obtained for a 'typical' reclaimed wastewater irrigated farm based on the typical setup using our model. Screening analysis showed that PPCPs with relatively high LogD value and lower ratios of degradation rate (in soils) to plant uptake have a greater potential to be transferred to humans and cause potential health risks. We established a modeling method for evaluating the fate and human health effects of PPCPs in reclaimed wastewater reuse for the agricultural system and developed an index for screening PPCPs with high potential to accumulate in agricultural products. The model and findings are valuable for managing water reuse for irrigation and mitigating the harmful effects of PPCPs.

Sewage sludge in agriculture - the effects of selected chemical pollutants and emerging genetic resistance determinants on the quality of soil and crops - a review

In line with sustainable development principles and in order to combat climate change, which contributes to progressive soil depletion, various solutions are being sought to use treated sewage sludge as a soil amendment to improve soil quality and enrich arable soils with adequate amounts of biogenic compounds. This review article focuses on the effects of the agricultural use of biosolids on the environment. The article reviews the existing knowledge on selected emerging contaminants in treated sewage sludge and describes the impact of these pollutants on the environment and living organisms based on 183 publications selected from over 16,000 papers on related topics published over the last ten years. This study deals not only with chemical contaminants but also genetic determinants of resistance to these compounds. Current research has questioned the agricultural use of biosolids due to the presence of mutual interactions between antibiotics, heavy metals, the genetic determinants of resistance (antibiotic resistance genes - ARGs and heavy metal resistance genes - HMRGs) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well as the risks associated with their transfer to the environment. This study emphasizes the need for more extensive legal regulations that account for other pollutants of environmental concern (PEC), particularly in countries where sewage sludge is applied in agriculture most extensively. Future research should focus on more effective methods of eliminating PEC from sewage sludge, especially from the sludge that is used to fertilize agricultural land, because even small amounts of these micropollutants can have serious implications for the health and life of humans and animals.

Co-occurrence of antiseptic triclocarban and chiral anti-inflammatory ibuprofen in environment: Association between biological effect in sediment and risk to human health

Residues of antiseptics and drugs have been ubiquitously detected in aquatic water-sediment systems, and are thus considered emerging contaminants that threaten our global environment. To investigate the potential risk of ibuprofen and triclocarban in sediment, effects of enzyme activity on the enantioselective degradation in sediment were investigated. Enantioselective fate of rac-ibuprofen was observed in sediment with R-enantiomer exhibiting preferential degradation. Enzyme evidence showed that high levels of triclocarban could significantly inhibit activities of catalase and urease activities in sediment, as well as increase the half-life of ibuprofen (from 5.8 d to 10.1 d). Cytotoxicity data suggested that cell growth processes were significantly affected by ibuprofen and triclocarban co-exposure, which was consistent with apoptosis results. Additionally, the expression of several proteins (Cyto-c, Nrf2, p62, Keap1, NQO1, and Pink1) were markedly induced upon exposure to ibuprofen in the presence of triclocarban. In conclusion, these findings illustrated that co-occurrence of ibuprofen and triclocarban residues have synergistic adverse effects to the environment and synergistically threaten human health.

The countryside or the city: Which environment is better for the honeybee?

For a number of years, the decline of honeybee (Apis mellifera) in North America and Europe has been the subject of much debate. Among the many factors proposed by hundreds of studies to explain this phenomenon is the hypothesis that agricultural activities using pesticides contribute to the weakness of bee colonies. Moreover, while urban beekeeping is presently booming in several cities, we do not know if this environment is more beneficial for bees than the typical, rural area. In the summer of 2018, we sampled honeybees (foragers and larvae) in rural (Laurentians) and urban (city of Montreal) areas and compared them using the following biomarkers: carotenoids, retinoids, α-tocopherol, metallothionein-like proteins (MTLPs), lipid peroxidation, triglycerides, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) and proteins. Pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and metals were also quantified in honeybees' tissues. Our result revealed that, globally, urban foragers had higher levels of insecticides and PPCPs and that metals were in greater concentrations in urban larvae. Compared to rural foragers, urban foragers had higher concentrations of MTLPs, triglycerides, protein and AChE activity. The multifactorial analysis confirmed that insecticides, some metals and PPCPs were the most influential components in the contaminant‒biomarker relationships for both foragers and larvae.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency linked to unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) as prophylactic agent and therapeutic purposes across various industries. Occurrence of pharmaceuticals are identified in ground water, surface water, soils, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in ng/L to μg/L concentration range. The prevalence of organic compounds including antimicrobial agents, hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, disinfectants, synthetic musks etc. in environment have posed serious health concerns. The aim of this review is to elucidate the major sources accountable for emergence of antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, variety of introductory sources and fate of PPCPs in aquatic environment including human and veterinary wastes, aquaculture and agriculture related wastes, and other anthropogenic activities have been discussed. Furthermore, genetic and enzymatic factors responsible for transfer and appearance of antibiotic resistance genes are presented. Ecotoxicity of PPCPs has been studied in environment in order to present risk imposed to human and ecological health. As per published literature reports, the removal of antibiotics and related traces being difficult, couples the possibility of emergence of antibiotic resistance and hence sustainability in global water resources. Therefore, research on environmental behavior and control strategies should be conducted along with assessing their chronic toxicity to identify potential human and ecological risks.

Occurrence of Chlorinated Paraffins in a Wetland Ecosystem: Removal and Distribution in Plants and Sediments

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are of great socioeconomic significance because they can remove anthropogenic compounds from aquatic environments. However, no information is available about the removal of persistent chlorinated paraffins by CWs. This study investigates the occurrences, fates, and mass balances of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs), and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs) in a CW ecosystem. MCCPs were the predominant compounds in water, sediments, and plants within the system. The amounts of SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs entering the wetland were 3.3, 6.8, and 3.4 g/day, respectively. Overall removal efficiencies were 51-78%, 76-86%, and 76-91% for SCCPs, MCCPs, and LCCPs, respectively, and the greatest reduction in CPs was observed in the subsurface flow wetland unit. CPs were predominantly adsorbed onto the sediment and bioaccumulated in the plants, and their organic carbon-water partitioning and plant-water accumulation increased as the carbon and chlorine numbers increased. Sediment sorption (12-38%) and degradation (12-50%) contributed the most to the removal of CPs, but bioaccumulation of CPs in plants (3.8-12%) should not be neglected. Wetlands can economically remove large amounts of CPs, but sediment in the wetland systems could be a sink for CP pollutants.

Identification of (anti-)androgenic activities and risks of sludges from industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants

The annual production of sludges is significant all over the world, and large amounts of sludges have been improperly disposed by random dumping. The contaminants in these sludges may leak into the surrounding soils, surface and groundwater, or be blown into the atmosphere, thereby causing adverse effects to human health. In this study, the (anti-)androgenic activities in organic extracts of sludges produced from both industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were examined using reporter gene assay based on MDA-kb2 cell lines and the potential (anti-)androgenic risks were assessed using hazard index (HI) based on bioassays. Twelve of the 18 samples exhibited androgen receptor (AR) antagonistic activities, with AR antagonistic equivalents ranging from 1.2 × 10² μg flutamide/g sludge to 1.8 × 10⁴ μg flutamide/g sludge; however, no AR agonistic activity was detected in any of the tested samples. These 12 sludges were all from chemical WWTPs; no sludges from domestic WWTPs displayed AR antagonistic activity. Aside from wastewater source, treatment scale and technology could also influence AR antagonistic potencies. The HI values of all the 12 sludges exceeded 1.0, and the highest HI value was above 3.0 × 10³ for children; this indicates that these sludges might cause adverse effects to human health and that children are at a greater risk than adults. The anti-androgenic potencies and risks of the subdivided fractions were also determined, and medium-polar and polar fractions were found to have relatively high detection rates and contribution rates to the AR antagonistic potencies and risks of the raw sample extracts.

A Review on the Fate of Legacy and Alternative Antimicrobials and Their Metabolites during Wastewater and Sludge Treatment

Antimicrobial compounds are used in a broad range of personal care, consumer and healthcare products and are frequently encountered in modern life. The use of these compounds is being reexamined as their safety, effectiveness and necessity are increasingly being questioned by regulators and consumers alike. Wastewater often contains significant amounts of these chemicals, much of which ends up being released into the environment as existing wastewater and sludge treatment processes are simply not designed to treat many of these contaminants. Furthermore, many biotic and abiotic processes during wastewater treatment can generate significant quantities of potentially toxic and persistent antimicrobial metabolites and byproducts, many of which may be even more concerning than their parent antimicrobials. This review article explores the occurrence and fate of two of the most common legacy antimicrobials, triclosan and triclocarban, their metabolites/byproducts during wastewater and sludge treatment and their potential impacts on the environment. This article also explores the fate and transformation of emerging alternative antimicrobials and addresses some of the growing concerns regarding these compounds. This is becoming increasingly important as consumers and regulators alike shift away from legacy antimicrobials to alternative chemicals which may have similar environmental and human health concerns.

Comparison of anaerobic, cycling aerobic/anoxic, and sequential anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic digestion to remove triclosan and triclosan metabolites from municipal biosolids

The antimicrobial triclosan (TCS) is a pervasive and persistent environmental micropollutant which can contaminate land, biota, and water through the land application of biosolids. Many existing sludge management techniques have limited effectiveness against TCS and TCS metabolites including triclosan-sulfate (TCS-SO₄). The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of different digestion types (anaerobic, aerobic/anoxic, and sequential anaerobic + aerobic/anoxic), temperatures, and digester sludge retention times (SRTs) on the destruction of organic matter, and on TCS/TCS metabolites. Conventional mesophilic anaerobic digesters (AD), room temperature cycling aerobic/anoxic digesters (AERO/ANOX), and sequential AD + AERO/ANOX digesters were all effective in removing organic matter. The optimum single-stage AD, and AERO/ANOX scenarios were both 20-day SRTs which had 52.3 ± 1.4 and 47.1 ± 3.7% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals, respectively. Sequential AD + AERO/ANOX digesters improved organic matter destruction, removing up to 68.2 ± 2.1% of COD at an 8-day AD + 12-day AERO/ANOX second-stage (mesophilic) SRTs. While AD showed modest levels of TCS removals (all <40%), TCS was substantially more degradable aerobically with AERO/ANOX removing up to 80.3 ± 2.5% of TCS and nearly all TCS-SO₄ entering the digester at a 20-day SRT. Sequential AD + AERO/ANOX removed virtually all TCS-SO₄ entering the system and improved TCS removals from first stage ADs. However, they were less effective than a single-stage AERO/ANOX digester operating at the same overall SRT. These results demonstrate that AERO/ANOX and sequential AD + AERO/ANOX processes could be used to reduce the amount of TCS, TCS-SO₄ and TCS-related compounds in digested sludge, minimizing the environmental burden of the land application of biosolids.

Trace organic contaminants in field-scale cultivated alfalfa, soil, and pore water after 10 years of irrigation with reclaimed wastewater

Several studies have assessed the presence of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in reclaimed wastewater and their uptake into crops but there are limited data from field-scale studies. In this research, we studied the fate of 12 TrOCs in wastewater samples, 11 in plants and in soil pore water, and 10 in soil at an agricultural research farm, which was irrigated with reclaimed wastewater for more than 10 years. First, we examined the presence of the compounds in the primary, secondary, and treated effluent of a regional water reclamation facility which provides the irrigation water. The agricultural field produced alfalfa, and we measured the contaminants in the alfalfa, soil, and pore water. Reclaimed wastewater contained 11 of 12 TrOCs, with concentrations ranging from 26 ± 9 ng/L (DEET) to 1539 ± 1899 ng/L (trimethoprim). Atrazine was not detected. Pore water collected during non-irrigating periods contained all analyzed TrOCs, from 3 ± 0.1 ng/L (diphenhydramine) to 343 ± 360 ng/L (primidone). TrOCs measured in pore water samples indicated that they may leach to shallow groundwater even when fields are not being irrigated. Soils from 0 to 60 cm contained nine TrOCs from below the reporting limit (fluoxetine) to 329 ng/g (carbamazepine). Atrazine was not detected. TrOC concentrations decreased with increasing soil depth, except carbamazepine, which was more recalcitrant. Nine TrOCs were present in the shoots and leaves of alfalfa grown in the reclaimed wastewater irrigated plots, at concentrations ranging from <1 ng/g (diphenhydramine and fluoxetine) to 49 ng/g dry weight (carbamazepine). Atrazine and caffeine were not detected. We estimated that a maximum of 14% of DEET from the reclaimed wastewater was accumulated in alfalfa. Overall, despite some accumulation of TrOCs in the soil, alfalfa uptake was limited, which results in low exposure to foraging animals.
