Abstract
Proper posture, characterized by the appropriate alignment of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar segments of the spine, enables these regions to maintain their normal curvature. Body composition is recognized as one of the factors that can influence overall postural alignment of the spine. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of the parameters of body composition on the prevalence of postural disorders in the sagittal plane. The cross-sectional study was conducted on 152 children of both genders (78 boys), at a mean age of 11 years ± 6 months. In order to evaluate postural disorders, the Formetric 4D System, a tool manufactured by Diers, Schlangenbad, Germany was used. Based on its output data, the following variables were obtained: hyperkyphosis, hyperlordosis, kypholordosis, flatback, and normal alignment of the body in the sagittal plane. The evaluation of body composition parameters was conducted using the InBody 770 device. To determine how body composition influences the postural status of the spinal column, a discriminant analysis was employed. The results showed that approximately 65.8% of children exhibit various types of postural disorders when assessing the alignment of the spine in the sagittal plane. The most prevalent disorder observed was hyperkyphosis, affecting 34.2% of the subjects, followed by kypholordosis at 16.4%. Moreover, the results demonstrated that body composition significantly influences body posture (p = 0.004). An increase in fat mass corresponds to a deviation from normal body posture, whereas an increase in the percentage of skeletal muscle mass and fat-free mass is associated with a reduction in postural abnormalities in the sagittal plane. Considering the results, it is clear that body composition parameters serve as more reliable predictors of the influence on body posture compared to simply calculating the body mass index. Furthermore, it can be concluded that there are consistent patterns of influence by specific body composition parameters, including fat mass, percentage of skeletal muscle, and fat-free mass, on body posture among children from various climates. These results underscore the significance of implementing strength exercises in children, particularly during periods of rapid growth and development, as a means of preventing and correcting postural disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Bioelectrical impedance (BIA) whole-body and regional raw parameters have been used to develop prediction models to estimate whole-body lean soft tissue (LSTM), with less attention being given to the development of models for regional LSTM. Therefore, we aimed to develop and validate BIA-derived equations predicting regional LSTM against dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in healthy adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS 149 adults were included in this cross-sectional investigation. Whole-body and regional LSTM were assessed by DXA, and raw bioelectrical parameters of distinct body regions were measured using a 50 kHz phase sensitive BIA analyzer. BIA-derived equations were developed using a stepwise multiple linear regression approach in 2/3 of the sample and cross-validated in the remaining sample. RESULTS Slopes and intercepts of predicted LSTM and DXA measured LSTM did not differ from 1 and 0, respectively, for each region (p ≥ 0.05), with the exception for the trunk (p < 0.05). The BIA-derived equations exhibited a strong relationship (p < 0.001) between the predicted and measured LSTM for each of the following body regions: right and left arms (R = 0.94; R = 0.96), right and left legs (R = 0.88; R = 0.88), upper body (R = 0.96), lower body (R = 0.89), right and left sides of the body (R = 0.94; R = 0.94), and trunk (R = 0.90). Agreement analyses revealed no associations between the differences and the means of the predicted and DXA-derived LSTM. CONCLUSION The developed BIA-derived equations provide a valid estimate of regional LSTM in middle-aged healthy adults, representing a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to DXA for the assessment and identification of LSTM imbalances in both clinical and sport-specific contexts.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to compare body composition (BC) measurements obtained by three widely used BC measuring methods, air displacement plethysmography (ADP), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), in Chinese children and adolescents by sex and different BMI categories. METHODS We used three BC measuring methods to evaluate healthy Chinese children and adolescents aged 5-17 years with BMI categories ranging from underweight to obese. Fat mass (FM, kg), fat mass percentage (FMP, %), fat-free mass (FFM, kg) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM, kg) were measured by DXA, BIA and ADP on the same day within 1 h. RESULTS A total of 172 Chinese children and adolescents were included in this study. The agreements for FM, FFM and ASM estimated by the three methods were excellent or good at the population level (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.850, P < 0.05). However, ADP or BIA estimated lower body fat content and higher FFM than DXA (P < 0.001 for all). Moreover, the precise estimates significantly varied across BMI categories. In addition, the limit of agreements was wide, and the differences might not be clinically acceptable at the individual level. CONCLUSIONS Body fat and FFM obtained by the three commonly used methods were highly correlated, but systematically different and influenced by BMI. This study provided a basis for mutual reference of measurements between three widely used methods.

Abstract
Background Little is known about how sport and school restrictions early during the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic impacted exercise performance and body composition in youth with heart disease (HD). Methods A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients with HD who had serial exercise testing and body composition via bioimpedance analysis performed within 12 months before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Formal activity restriction was noted as present or absent. Analysis was performed with a paired t-test. Results There were 33 patients (mean age 15.3 ± 3.4 years; 46% male) with serial testing completed (18 electrophysiologic diagnosis, 15 congenital HD). There was an increase in skeletal muscle mass (SMM) (24.1 ± 9.2-25.9 ± 9.1 kg, p < 0.0001), weight (58.7 ± 21.5-63.9 ± 22 kg, p < 0.0001), and body fat percentage (22.7 ± 9.4-24.7 ± 10.4%, p = 0.04). The results were similar when stratified by age <18 years old (n = 27) or by sex (male 16, female 17), consistent with typical pubertal changes in this predominantly adolescent population. Absolute peak VO2 increased, but this was due to somatic growth and aging as evidenced by no change in % of predicted peak VO2. There remained no difference in predicted peak VO2 when excluding patients with pre-existing activity restrictions (n = 12). Review of similar serial testing in 65 patients in the 3 years before the pandemic demonstrated equivalent findings. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic and related lifestyle changes do not appear to have had substantial negative impacts on aerobic fitness or body composition in children and young adults with HD.

Abstract
Existe escasa literatura sobre las asimetrías en el pádel, un deporte de naturaleza asimétrica. Para estudiar el desarrollo de asimetrías en este deporte se evaluó, con bioimpedancia, la masa magra de ambos miembros superiores de 96 jugadores de pádel jóvenes y de 76 esquiadores (grupo control) y se calculó el índice de simetría. Los jugadores de pádel tuvieron una asimetría entre ambos miembros superiores mayor que los esquiadores, cuando se consideró toda la muestra (7.2 ± 5 % vs. 1.4 ± 3.2 %; p < 0.001), en jugadores con un estado de madurez negativo (5,7 ± 3,2 % vs. 1,5 ± 3,8 %; p < 0,001) y en aquellos con un estado de madurez positivo (8,3 ± 5,8 % vs. 1,3 ± 2,4 %; p < 0,001). Este estudio revela que el pádel genera asimetrías de masa magra en los miembros superiores, incluso antes de la edad de crecimiento pico.

Abstract
Single- and multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has gained popularity as a tool to assess body composition and health status of children and adolescents, but many questions and misconceptions remain. This review addresses pressing issues researchers and health care providers may encounter when using BIA in the young population. The importance of choosing population-specific and device-specific equations to estimate body composition as well as the use of BIA in longitudinal analyses are discussed. When specific equations are not available, raw bioimpedance values (i.e., resistance, reactance, and impedance) can be used to compute bioimpedance parameters, such as phase angle, impedance ratio, and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis. As interpreting these parameters is challenging, suggestions are provided on the use of reference data, cut-off points, and adjustment factors. Furthermore, unsolved technical and analytical issues are listed. Based on existing issues and potential for future development, a greater interaction between industry and academic researchers to improve the validity of BIA measurements among children and adolescents across their developmental stages is encouraged.

Abstract
Basic motor competencies (BMC) are a prerequisite for children to be physically active, participate in sports and thus develop a healthy, active lifestyle. The present study provides a broad screening of BMC and associations with age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and extracurricular physical activity (PA) in 10 different European countries. The different country and regional contexts within Europe will offer a novel view on already established BMC associations. The cross-sectional study was conducted in 11 regions in 10 European countries in 2018. The motor competence areas, object movement (OM) and self-movement (SM), were assessed using the MOBAK-1-2 test instrument in 3758 first and second graders (age: M = 6.86 ± 0.60 years; 50% girls) during Physical Education classes. Children were questioned about their extracurricular PA and age. Their body weight and height were measured in order to calculate BMI. Statistical analyses included variances and correlations. The results showed significant differences in BMC levels between countries (OM: F = 18.74, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.048; SM: F = 73.10, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.163) whereas associations between BMC and correlates were similar. Boys performed significantly better in OM while girls performed better in SM. Age was consistently positively related to OM and SM with older children reaching higher levels of BMC than younger ones. While participation rates for extracurricular PA differed widely, participation in ball sports was correlated with OM and SM. Participation in individual sports showed a significant association with SM. In summary, BMC levels of children seem to depend on where they live and are strongly related to their participation in extracurricular PA. Therefore, education and health policies, in order to enhance motor competence development and PA participation, are recommended. Further research on country-specific Physical Education frameworks and their influence on BMC will provide more insights into structural factors and cultural characteristics of BMC development. On a school level, support tools and educational materials for teachers about BMC may enable children to achieve a basic level of motor competencies through Physical Education, contributing to lifelong participation in PA.

Development of bioelectrical impedance-based equations for the prediction of body composition of Malawian adolescents aged 10-18 years: a cross-sectional study. BMJ Open 2022; 12:e058551. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) depends on population-specific prediction equations and there is no population-specific equation for predicting fat-free mass (FFM) in Malawian adolescents. This study aimed at determining the agreement between FFM measured by deuterium oxide dilution technique (the reference) and FFM by BIA; and propose BIA-based prediction equations to estimate FFM for Malawian adolescents. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. SETTING The study was conducted in Blantyre, Malawi PARTICIPANTS: 186 Malawian adolescents aged between 10 and 18 years were included in this study. Body composition was estimated by both the BodyStat BIA analyser and the deuterium oxide dilution method. RESULTS BIA inbuilt equation underestimated FFM compared with deuterium oxide dilution (p=0.039). The new prediction equation for FFM (kg)=-4.316+ 0.425* height2(cm)/resistance (Ω)+1.287* sex (male=1, female=0)+0.307*age(years)+0.344* weight(kg)+0.019*reactance(Ω) yielded an R2 of 0.926. The equation for total body water (TBW) (kg)=-2.152 + 0.328*height2(cm)/resistance (Ω) 0.910*sex (male=1, female=0)+0.307 *age (years)+0.249*weight(kg)+0.015*reactance(Ω) yielded an R2 of 0.922. The Bland-Altman plot illustrated a good level of concordance between the FFM and TBW predicted by the new equations and the values derived using deuterium dilution method. CONCLUSIONS The new BIA prediction equations for estimating FFM and TBW could be used to assess with very good accuracy and precision the body composition of Malawian and adolescents with similar characteristics.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the effects of individualized-load power training (IPT) versus traditional moderate-load power training (TPT) on strength, power, jump performance, and body composition in elite young Nordic athletes. METHODS In a randomized crossover design, 10 young male athletes (ski jumpers, Nordic combined athletes) age 17.5 (0.6) years (biological maturity status: +3.5 y postpeak height velocity) who competed on a national or international level performed 5 weeks of IPT (4 × 5 repetitions at 49%-72% 1-repetiton maximum [RM]) and TPT (5 × 5 repetitions at 50%-60% 1-RM) in addition to their regular training. Testing before, between, and after both training blocks comprised the assessment of muscle strength (loaded back squat 3-RM), power (maximal loaded back squat power), jump performance (eg, drop-jump height, reactive strength index), and body composition (eg, skeletal muscle mass). RESULTS Significant, large-size main effects for time were found for muscle strength (P < .01; g = 2.7), reactive strength index (P = .03; g = 1.6), and drop-jump height (P = .02; g = 1.9) irrespective of the training condition (IPT, TPT). No significant time-by-condition interactions were observed. For measures of body composition, no significant main effects of condition and time or time-by-condition interactions were found. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that short-term IPT and TPT at moderate loads in addition to regular training were equally effective in improving measures of muscle strength (loaded back squat 3-RM) and vertical-jump performance (reactive strength index, drop jump, and height) in young Nordic athletes.

Abstract
Background Metabolic disease due to increased fat mass is observed in amputees (APTs), thereby restricting their activity. Systemic health management with periodic body composition (BC) testing is essential for healthy living. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive and low-cost method to test BC; however, the APTs are classified as being exempted in the BIA. Objective To develop segmental estimated regression equations (sEREs) for determining the fat-free mass (FFM, kg) suitable for APTs and improve the accuracy and validity of the sERE. Methods Seventy-five male APTs participated in this cross-sectional study. Multiple regression analysis was performed to develop highly accurate sEREs of BIA based on independent variables derived from anthropometric measurements, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and BIA parameters. The difference in validity between the predicted DXA and sum of the segmentally-predicted FFM values by sEREs (Sum_sEREs) values was evaluated using bivariate linear regression analysis and the Bland–Altman plot. Results The coefficient of determination (R2) and total error (TE) between DXA and Sum_sEREs were 71% and 5.4 (kg) in the cross-validation analysis. Conclusions We confirmed the possibility of evaluating the FFM of APTs through the sEREs developed in this study. We also identified several independent variables that should be considered while developing such sEREs. Further studies are required to determine the validity of our sEREs and the most appropriate BIA frequencies for measuring FFM in APTs.

Abstract
Background Adults with a Fontan circulation tend to have myopenia and elevated adiposity when measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Bioelectrical impedance analysis is an alternative validated approach to assess body composition. We used bioelectrical impedance analysis to compare body composition between pediatric patients with a Fontan circulation and control individuals without heart disease. Methods and Results A retrospective chart review identified all patients aged <22 years with a Fontan circulation who presented for cardiopulmonary exercise testing and bioelectrical impedance analysis from April 2019 to January 2020. Data were compared with control subjects tested during the same period. We studied 47 patients with a Fontan circulation (53% boys; 15±3.1 years) and 165 controls (48% boys; 14.4±2.5 years). Fontan status was associated with shorter height, but similar age, sex, and overall body mass. Patients with Fontan had lower lean body mass (-12.0±22%, Z-score -0.5±1, P=0.005), skeletal muscle mass (-13.6±1.4%; Z-score, -0.5±1; P=0.004), skeletal muscle indexed to height (-10.3±13.3%; Z-score, -0.5±1; P=0.005), and higher percent body fat (+13.8±18.6%; Z-score, 0.4±1.2; P=0.03). Greater skeletal muscle mass was associated with higher peak oxygen consumption (r2=0.52, P<0.0001) and oxygen pulse (r2=0.68, P<0.0001). Patients who had suffered a late complication (ie, heart transplant referral or evidence of extracardiac organ dysfunction) of the Fontan operation (13 of 47, 27.7%) had lower skeletal muscle mass (P=0.048) and higher body fat percentage (P=0.003). Conclusions The Fontan circulation is associated with marked myopenia and increased adiposity. Higher muscle mass was associated with better exercise capacity. Fontan complications are associated with lower muscle mass and increased adiposity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess body composition in children has limitations including expense, lack of portability, and exposure to radiation. The aims of this study were to examine: (1) validity of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) against DXA for measuring bone density and (2) the validity of in-built algorithm of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for measuring body composition in children (8-13 years) living in New Zealand. SUBJECTS/METHODS Total body less head (TBLH), bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and body composition were measured with DXA (QDR Discovery A, Hologic, USA); calcaneal BMD and stiffness index (SI) with QUS (Sahara QUS, Hologic, USA), and BIA on the InBody 230 (Biospace Ltd., Seoul, Korea). Relative validity was assessed using Pearson's and Lin's concordance correlation coefficients (CCC), and Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS In 124 healthy children, positive correlations between QUS SI and DXA (BMC and BMD) were observed (range = 0.30-0.45, P < 0.01). Results from Lin's CCC test showed almost perfect correlations between BIA and DXA fat free mass (0.96), fat mass (0.92), and substantial correlation for percentage of fat mass (0.75) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Although BIA results were not as accurate as DXA and DXA remains the gold standard method for clinical assessment, BIA can be an alternative method for investigating body composition among children in large cohort field studies. Calcaneal QUS and DXA are not interchangeable methods for measuring bone density in children similar to our study population.

Abstract
It has been theorized that physical literacy is associated with physical activity and health. The purpose of this study is to investigate the associations between physical literacy and health, and if this relationship is mediated by moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Two hundred and twenty-two children (113 girls, 10.7 ± 1.0 years old) participated in this cross-sectional study. A physical literacy composite score was computed from measures of PLAYfun, PLAYparent, and PLAYself. Physical activity was measured over seven days with accelerometers, expressed as MVPA (min/day). Health indicators included: body composition (percent body fat), aerobic fitness (treadmill time and 60s heart rate recovery), resting systolic blood pressure, and quality of life. Physical literacy was significantly associated (p < 0.001) with percent body fat (R2 = 0.23), treadmill time (R2 = 0.21), 60 s heart rate recovery (R2 = 0.36), systolic blood pressure (R2 = 0.11), and quality of life (R2 = 0.11). The relationships between physical literacy and aerobic fitness, but not other health indicators, were directly mediated by MVPA. Higher physical literacy in children is associated with favorable health indicators, and the relationships between physical literacy and aerobic fitness were influenced by MVPA. Future work should examine these relationships longitudinally and determine if changes in physical literacy leads to changes in health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Anorexia nervosa (AN) becomes chronic, with high physical, psychological and social morbidity and high mortality without early and effective treatment. The impact of physical exercise as a coadjutant to conventional treatment in this clinical population has been studied with favorable results. Although a Pilates program could be beneficial for patients with AN, no study has analyzed its feasibility and effects in adolescents with AN. Therefore, this study evaluated the safety of a Pilates program and investigated the feasibility and effect in adolescents with AN. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this prospective quasi-experimental study, body composition, blood analysis, sedentary time, physical activity and time of sleep, and physical fitness were measured objectively before and after a 10-week Pilates supervised program. RESULTS Twelve female adolescents with AN (14.6 ± 1.7 years old) completed the program, with a session attendance rate of 96%, a persistence rate of 100%. There were significant increases in height, plasma calcium and sleep efficiency. Significant decreases in plasma follitropin, sleep duration and, duration and number of night perturbations were observed. CONCLUSION A Pilates program is safe and feasible in adolescents with AN when they have a controlled and stable weight, and such a program could be a viable alternative among treatment programs to achieve better sleep quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinical, psychopathological, physical, and sleep-related evolution of adolescents with restricting-type of anorexia nervosa (AN-R) after 10 weeks of a daytime hospital program. METHODS Body composition, physical activity and sleep were measured objectively before and after 10 weeks of treatment. In addition, psychopathology and body image disturbances were measured with a self-report questionnaire. RESULTS Fourteen female adolescents with AN-R (14.3±1.6 years old) participated in the study. A significant increase was found in eight of the ten variables for body composition (p<0.05). There were no significant changes in psychopathology, body image disturbances or physical activity. Concerning sleep, a significant, moderately standardized and substantial increase in night latency was found (p=0.002), and there was a significant, small standardized and substantial decrease in night efficiency (p=0.035). CONCLUSION After 10 weeks of follow-up with adolescent patients with AN-R who attended a day hospital program, there was a positive evolution of body composition. However, with regard to sleep patterns, there was a worsening of latency and night efficiency. Therefore, sleep care should be addressed in acute treatment programs for adolescents with AN-R.

Measurement of extracellular fluid of the affected limbs is widely used in detecting LE; however, quantification of the skin alterations and early tissue changes in LE lacks approaches. Methods and Results: Ninety-one patients with LE were assessed. Measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin stiffness (SF), and percentage water content (PWC) was assessed on five predetermined skin sites. The value of TEWL, SF, and PWC increased significantly in lymphedematous skin compare with controls, indicating damaged function and texture of the affected skin. Both PWC ratio and SF ratio strongly correlated with LE stage. High correlations were found among instruments assessing tissue fluid. Conclusions: Assessment of the skin parameters has contributed new information about the functional and structural alterations in chronic lymphedematous skin. Quantification of skin properties changes could be a valuable supplement to diagnosis and evaluation of chronic LE.

Abstract
Resumo Verificou-se a relação entre diferentes índices antropométricos e os lipídios plasmáticos. Os dados foram coletados de 2014 a 2016 em 854 escolares (6-18 anos). Foram aferidas a circunferência da cintura (CC), o percentual de gordura corporal (%G) por bioimpedância, o índice de massa corporal (IMC) e relação da cintura/estatura (RCE). Em sangue coletado em jejum mediu-se o colesterol total (CT), HDLc, e triglicerídeos e calculou-se o colesterol não HDL (Não HDLc). Os dados são apresentados por média ± desvio padrão, porcentagens. A comparação de médias foi feita pelo teste t ou ANOVA seguida de teste de Tukey. A associação entre variáveis foi testada por regressão linear. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. Meninos obesos tinham CT, Não HDLc e LDLc mais elevados do que os eutróficos. Em meninas este achado foi apenas para o Não HDLc. Crianças com o %G e RCE inadequados apresentaram LDLc e Não HDLc maiores (p < 0,001), os quais associaram-se positivamente (p < 0,001) com as frações lipídicas (CT e Não HDLc). O excesso de gordura corporal elevou em 21% a probabilidade de ocorrência de colesterol acima da referência (170 mg/dL). O excesso de gordura corporal associou-se com o perfil lipídico aterogênico (maior Não HDLc), principalmente em meninos.

J Strength Cond Res 32(11): 3039-3050, 2018-This study examined the effect of 8 weeks of free-weight resistance training (RT) and plyometric (PLYO) training on maximal strength, explosiveness, and jump performance compared with no added training (CON), in young male soccer players. Forty-one 11- to 13-year-old soccer players were divided into 3 groups (RT, PLYO, and CON). All participants completed isometric and dynamic (240°·s) knee extensions before and after training. Peak torque (pT), peak rate of torque development (pRTD), electromechanical delay (EMD), rate of muscle activation (Q50), m. vastus lateralis thickness (VLT), and jump performance were examined. Peak torque, pRTD, and jump performance significantly improved in both training groups. Training resulted in significant (p ≤ 0.05) increases in isometric pT (23.4 vs. 15.8%) and pRTD (15.0 vs. 17.6%), in RT and PLYO, respectively. During dynamic contractions, training resulted in significant increases in pT (12.4 and 10.8% in RT and PLYO, respectively), but not in pRTD. Jump performance increased in both training groups (RT = 10.0% and PLYO = 16.2%), with only PLYO significantly different from CON. Training resulted in significant increases in VLT (RT = 6.7% and PLYO = 8.1%). There were no significant EMD changes. In conclusion, 8-week free-weight resistance and plyometric training resulted in significant improvements in muscle strength and jump performance. Training resulted in similar muscle hypertrophy in the 2 training modes, with no clear differences in muscle performance. Plyometric training was more effective in improving jump performance, whereas free-weight RT was more advantageous in improving peak torque, where the stretch reflex was not involved.

Abstract
We have recently shown that population-specific formulae are required to estimate fat-free mass (FFM) from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in obese women with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) matched by age and percent fat mass (FM) to non-PWS women. The present cross-sectional study was aimed at developing generalised BIA equations that could be used in PWS subjects independently of sex and FM. We used dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to measure FFM and BIA to measure whole-body impedance at 50 kHz (Z50) in 34 women and 21 men with PWS. The impedance index, that is, height (cm)2/Z50 (Ω), explained 77% (BCa-bootstrapped 95% CI 65 to 85%) of the variance of FFM with a root mean squared error of the estimate of 3.7 kg (BCa-bootstrapped 95% CI 3.2 to 4.5 kg). BIA can be used to estimate FFM in obese and non-obese PWS men and women by means of population-specific equations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A rational way of nourishment, combined with adequate physical activity, are the basic components of maintaining proper body condition. OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate nutritional status among children and adolescents with different levels of physical activity. METHODS The study group consisted of 1,013 students of both genders aged between 7 and 18 years attending elementary and post-primary schools (general and sports profile) in Siemianowice Slaskie. RESULTS The crude body mass index (BMI) values ranged from 12.78 to 35.3. Body mass within the limits of arbitrary standard referred to 70% of the examined group, overweight or obesity was found in over 25%. Percentage of body fat (FATP) values ranged from 5.7 to 45.2%. CONCLUSIONS A significant number of children and adolescents were overweight or obese based on BMI categories and FATP values. Overweight and obesity were most common among younger children, particularly boys. Higher torso FATP levels were more common among sports-oriented class students. BMI is not a good tool for the determination of the nutritional status of children and adolescents, while the bioelectric impedance method enables one to conduct a precise analysis of adipose tissue content and location. Sports-oriented elementary school students from the study group were characterized by higher FATP values.

Abstract
Although our previously developed anthropometry-based calculation of heat capacity (HC) for adults appeared to be precise and valid, its use in children and adolescents may be associated with bias. This study investigated a large dataset from the Size Korea survey, a national anthropometric survey conducted in 2010, to revalidate our previous HC equation and to develop another one that is appropriate for children and adolescents. We enrolled 12,766 participants aged 7-69 years with body composition data measured by multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Age was associated with HC in children aged 7-19 years (R2 = 0.58) but not in adults (R2 = 0.007). Linear regression was appropriate to describe the relationship between HC and body surface area (BSA) in adults, whereas the regression in children and adolescent was quadratic. The previously developed HC equation had high reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.995) and predictive power (accurate prediction rate = 86.1%) in the >20 age group. The model composed of sex, body weight, BSA, and BSA2 was appropriate for the prediction of HC in young individuals aged 7-19 years. In conclusion, anthropometric-based modelling is a simple, reliable, and useful method for the calculation of HC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Estimating body composition using bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) requires specific prediction equations. The purpose of our study was to examine the validity of published BIA equations for assessing total body water (TBW) and fat-free mass (FFM) using deuterium oxide dilution (D2O) as a reference method and to develop new FFM and TBW BIA equations if needed for Moroccan pre-pubertal children. SUBJECTS/METHODS Data were collected from 247 schoolchildren aged 8-11 years old. Children were sorted by gender and age group and assigned in development and validation groups. D2O dilution was used as reference method for estimating TBW and FFM. Bland and Altman test, effect size, pure error, and proportional bias were used to assess the reliability of previous published equations. Cross-validation was performed by Bland and Altman test and BIA new equations were developed by linear regression. RESULTS Previously published equations were tested and showed significant bias values indicating that if used they would provide biased values of TBW and FFM. The new prediction equations developed were: [Formula: see text] (l) = 0.269 + 0.292 Ht2/R (cm2/Ω) + 0.221 weight (kg) + 0.824 sex (boys = 1, girls = 0) + 0.291 age (years) (R2 = 0.91, RMSE = 1.54 kg); [Formula: see text] (kg) = -0.450 + 0.380 Ht2/R (cm2/Ω) + 0.291 weight (kg) + 1.294 sex (boys = 1, girls = 0) + 0.446 age (years) (R2 = 0.91, RMSE = 1.97 kg). These equations provide better values of proportional bias, agreement, and pure error than the other tested equations. CONCLUSIONS The new BIA prediction equations seem to be the most accurate for Moroccan pre-pubertal children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body composition analysis has been used to investigate fat mass (FM) and bone mineral content (BMC) in children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV. Investigating the validity of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is interesting with respect to testing useful techniques for monitoring body composition in children and adolescents in clinical practice. The present study aimed to determine the validity of body composition analysis by BIA compared to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and air displacement plethysmography (ADP) in children and adolescents an HIV diagnosis. METHODS Sixty-four children and adolescents (35 females and 29 males) with a mean (SD) age of 12.22 (2.13) years and with an HIV diagnosis participated in the study. Fat-free mass (FFM), FM and body fat percentage (%BF) were obtained by BIA for comparison with DXA and ADP. Segmented FM (trunk, legs and arms), lean soft tissue mass (LSTM) (total and segmented) and BMC were obtained by BIA for comparison with DXA. RESULTS BIA presented a clinically acceptable correlation with DXA and ADP for FFM. Values found by BIA were underestimated compared to ADP, and overestimated compared to DXA. BIA presented a clinically acceptable correlation with DXA for LSTM estimates (total and segmented parameters) in both sexes (underestimating FM and overestimating LSTM). For other components (%BF, FM and BMC), BIA had a clinically unacceptable correlation with the reference methods in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS BIA was suitable for evaluating FFM and LSTM in children and adolescents with an HIV diagnosis. For FM, %BF and BMC, BIA was not suitable for performing an evaluation in both sexes.

Effects of Dapagliflozin on Body Composition and Liver Tests in Patients with Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Prospective, Open-label, Uncontrolled Study. Abstract
Background Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is an active form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Risk factors for NASH include type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors used to treat T2DM prevent glucose reabsorption in the kidney and increase glucose urinary excretion. Dapagliflozin is a potent, selective SGLT2 inhibitor that reduces hyperglycemia in patients with T2DM and has been demonstrated to reduce some complications associated with NASH in rodent models. Objective To assess the efficacy and safety profile of dapagliflozin for the treatment of NASH-associated with T2DM. Methods In this single-arm, nonrandomized, open-label study, 16 patients with percutaneous liver biopsy-confirmed NASH and T2DM were enrolled to be prescribed dapagliflozin 5 mg/d for 24 weeks. Of these, 11 patients were evaluable. Patients with chronic liver disease other than NASH were excluded. Body composition, laboratory variables related to liver tests and metabolism, and glucose homeostasis were assessed at baseline and periodically during the study. Changes from baseline were evaluated with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results Administration of dapagliflozin for 24 weeks was associated with significant decreases in body mass index (P < 0.01), waist circumference (P < 0.01), and waist-to-hip ratio (P < 0.01). Changes in body composition were driven by reductions in body fat mass (P < 0.01) and percent body fat (P < 0.01), without changes in lean mass or total body water. Liver tests (ie, serum concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, ferritin, and type IV collagen 7S) also significantly improved during the study. Insulin concentrations decreased (P < 0.01 by Week 24) in combination with significant reductions in fasting plasma glucose (P < 0.01) and glycated hemoglobin (P < 0.01) levels and increases in adiponectin (P < 0.01) levels from Week 4 onward. Conclusions Dapagliflozin was associated with improvements in body composition, most likely a reduction in visceral fat, which occurred together with improvements in liver tests and metabolic variables in patients with NASH-associated with T2DM. Abstract
In explosive contractions, neural activation is a major factor in determining the rate of torque development, while the latter is an important determinant of jump performance. However, the contribution of neuromuscular activation and rate of torque development to jump performance in children and youth is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the rate of neuromuscular activation, peak torque, rate of torque development, and jump performance in young male athletes. Forty-one 12.5 ± 0.5-year-old male soccer players completed explosive, unilateral isometric and dynamic (240°/s) knee extensions (Biodex System III), as well as countermovement-, squat-, and drop-jumps. Peak torque (pT), peak rate of torque development (pRTD), and rate of vastus lateralis activation (Q30) during the isometric and dynamic contractions were examined in relation to attained jump heights. Isometric pT and pRTD were strongly correlated (r = 0.71) but not related to jump performance. Dynamic pT and pRTD, normalized to body mass, were significantly related to jump height in all 3 jumps (r = 0.38-0.66, p < 0.05). Dynamic normalized, but not absolute pRTD, was significantly related to Q30 (r = 0.35, p < 0.05). In young soccer players, neuromuscular activation and rate of torque development in dynamic contractions are related to jump performance, while isometric contractions are not. These findings have implications in the choice of training and assessment methods for young athletes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has commonly been used to assess the body composition of children and adolescents. BIA validation studies have found distinct correlation values with reference methods. OBJECTIVES To assess the reproducibility, correlation and mean differences in body composition estimated by BIA and reference methods, we systematically reviewed the literature in the pediatric population. METHOD The search for articles was conducted in March 2016 and was limited to articles published from 2005 to 2015 in the PubMed, Embase, EBSCO, Web of Science, Scopus and SciELO databases. Two reviewers independently performed data selection and extraction of studies that investigated the BIA validity, responsiveness, reliability and/or measurement error (reproducibility) to estimate body composition in children and adolescents with an average age ≤ 18 years. RESULTS The search produced 48 articles. Almost perfect reproducibility was found in the body fat percentage estimated by BIA, and there was almost perfect correlation between the BIA ratings and reference methods for fat mass and fat-free mass. Regarding component estimates, BIA underestimated the fat mass in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS The body fat percentage estimated by BIA exhibited almost perfect reproducibility. The fat mass and fat-free mass estimated by BIA correlated almost perfectly with the reference methods in both sexes. BIA underestimated the fat mass in both sexes.

Abstract
Bioelectrical impedancemetry (BIA) has been used to evaluate hematocrit and red cell aggregability in vitro but whole body impedance measurements are also correlated to some hemorheologic factors, suggesting a relationship between viscosity factors and electric properties of blood. We repeatedly reported correlations with whole body BIA and hematocrit, whole blood viscosity and plasma viscosity, red cell rigidity and RBC aggregation. The SBIA Inbody 770 modelizes body as 5 cylinders and measures impedance at 1, 5, 50, 250, 500, and 1000 kHz. With the SBIA we found that hematocrit is best correlated to leg reactance at 50 kHz but also to leg impedance at 1 and 5 kHz and trunk reactance. RBC aggregation "M" is best correlated to arm reactance at 5 kHz but also to most measurements of segmental impedance (28 correlations found). RBC aggregation "M1" is best correlated to arm reactance at 5 kHz and to 19 other impedance measurements. A predictive equation for "M" from the mean between the two arm reactances at 5 kHz (maXc5) is found: M = 2.1845maXc5-23.958 (r = 0.665, p < 0.001) that provides a satisfactory Bland-Altman plot (mean difference: 0.000524 range [-1.6;+1.6]. This study suggests that previously reported correlations between BIA and viscosity factors were not spurious, and that in a narrow cylinder such as the arm the structure of circulating blood (hematocrit, red cell aggregation) may influence the passage of an electric current by increasing reactance.

Abstract
Background Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a convenient and child-friendly method for longitudinal analysis of changes in body composition. However, most validation studies of BIA have been performed on adult Caucasians. The present cross-sectional study investigated the validity of two portable BIA devices, the Inbody 230 (BIA8MF) and the Tanita BC-418 (BIA8SF), in healthy Taiwanese children. Methods Children aged 7–12 years (72 boys and 78 girls) were recruited. Body composition was measured by the BIA8SF and the BIA8MF. Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the reference method. Results There were strong linear correlations in body composition measurements between the BIA8SF and DXA and between the BIA8MF and DXA. Both BIAs underestimated fat mass (FM) and percentage body fat (%BF) relative to DXA in both genders The degree of agreement in lean body mass (LBM), FM, and %BF estimates was higher between BIA8MF and DXA than between BIA8SF and DXA. The Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (ρc) for LBM8MF met the criteria of substantial to perfect agreement whereas the ρc for FM8MF met the criteria of fair to substantial agreement. Bland-Altman analysis showed a clinically acceptable agreement between LBM measures by BIA8MF and DXA. The limit of agreement in %BF estimation by BIA and DXA were wide and the errors were clinically important. For the estimation of ALM, BIA8SF and BIA8MF both provided poor accuracy. Conclusions For all children, LBM measures were precise and accurate using the BIA8MF whereas clinically significant errors occurred in FM and %BF estimates. Both BIAs underestimated FM and %BF in children. Thus, the body composition results obtained using the inbuilt equations of the BIA8SF and BIA8MF should be interpreted with caution, and high quality validation studies for specific subgroups of children are required prior to field research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to generate a new muscle density index (MDI), the MDI_BIA, to evaluate muscle development, and to demonstrate the changes that occur in the BIA-based muscle cross-sectional area index (MCAI_BIA) that accompany growth. We also sought to determine the traceability of chronological changes in the MDI_BIA and MCAI_BIA. METHODS Healthy children (n=112) aged 8.68±3.16years (0.33-14.00years) underwent bioelectrical impedance (BI) measurements of their upper arms, thighs, and lower legs. The MDI_BIA and MCAI_BIA were calculated, and cross-sectional investigations were conducted into the changes in these indices that accompanied growth. Data collected after 1.10±0.08years from 45 participants determined the traceability of the chronological changes in the MDI_BIA and MCAI_BIA. RESULTS The MDI_BIA and MCAI_BIA were significantly positively correlated with age and height at all locations (P<0.01). The relationships between the locations and the MDI_BIA and MCAI_BIA differed, indicating that these indices evaluated the muscles from different perspectives. Except for the upper arm MDI_BIA, both indices at all locations regardless of age, showed significant chronological increases after an average period of 1.10years. CONCLUSIONS The MDI_BIA and MCAI_BIA were significantly correlated with age and height in healthy children, and they showed significant chronological increases. Hence, these indices could be used to represent muscle development and muscle mass increases. BIA is non-invasive, convenient, and economical and it may be useful in evaluating muscle development and muscle cross-sectional areas in children.

Abstract
This study examined the validity of segmental bioelectrical impedance (BI) analysis for predicting the fat-free masses (FFMs) of whole-body and body segments in children including overweight individuals. The FFM and impedance (Z) values of arms, trunk, legs, and whole body were determined using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and segmental BI analyses, respectively, in 149 boys and girls aged 6 to 12 years, who were divided into model-development (n = 74), cross-validation (n = 35), and overweight (n = 40) groups. Simple regression analysis was applied to (length)2/Z (BI index) for each of the whole-body and 3 segments to develop the prediction equations of the measured FFM of the related body part. In the model-development group, the BI index of each of the 3 segments and whole body was significantly correlated to the measured FFM (R2 = 0.867-0.932, standard error of estimation = 0.18-1.44 kg (5.9%-8.7%)). There was no significant difference between the measured and predicted FFM values without systematic error. The application of each equation derived in the model-development group to the cross-validation and overweight groups did not produce significant differences between the measured and predicted FFM values and systematic errors, with an exception that the arm FFM in the overweight group was overestimated. Segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis is useful for predicting the FFM of each of whole-body and body segments in children including overweight individuals, although the application for estimating arm FFM in overweight individuals requires a certain modification.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to develop and validate a prediction equation of fat-free mass (FFM) based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometry using air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) as a reference in Asian neonates and to test the applicability of the prediction equations in an independent Western cohort. A total of 173 neonates at birth and 140 at two weeks of age were included. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to develop the prediction equations in a two-third randomly selected subset and validated on the remaining one-third subset at each time point and in an independent Queensland cohort. FFM measured by ADP was the dependent variable, and anthropometric measures, sex and impedance quotient (L2/R50) were independent variables in the model. Accuracy of prediction equations was assessed using intra-class correlation and Bland-Altman analyses. L2/R50 was the significant predictor of FFM at week two but not at birth. Compared with the model using weight, sex and length, including L2/R50 slightly improved the prediction with a bias of 0·01 kg with 2 sd limits of agreement (LOA) (0·18, -0·20). Prediction explained 88·9 % of variation but not beyond that of anthropometry. Applying these equations to the Queensland cohort provided similar performance at the appropriate age. However, when the Queensland equations were applied to our cohort, the bias increased slightly but with similar LOA. BIA appears to have limited use in predicting FFM in the first few weeks of life compared with simple anthropometry in Asian populations. There is a need for population- and age-appropriate FFM prediction equations.

Abstract
The amount of total body water (TBW) can be estimated based on bioimpedance measurements of the human body. In sports, TBW estimations are of importance because mild water losses can impair muscular strength and aerobic endurance. Severe water losses can even be life threatening. TBW estimations based on bioimpedance, however, fail during sports because the increased body temperature corrupts bioimpedance measurements. Therefore, this paper proposes a machine learning method that eliminates the effects of increased temperature on bioimpedance and, consequently, reveals the changes in bioimpedance that are due to TBW loss. This is facilitated by utilizing changes in skin and core temperature. The method was evaluated in a study in which bioimpedance, temperature, and TBW loss were recorded every 15 min during a 2-h running workout. The evaluation demonstrated that the proposed method is able to reduce the error of TBW loss estimation by up to 71%, compared to the state of art. In the future, the proposed method in combination with portable bioimpedance devices might facilitate the development of wearable systems for continuous and noninvasive TBW loss monitoring during sports.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pressure among young athletes to meet body composition goals may lead to poor nutrition and affect growth. AIMS To examine the proportion of body fat (%BF), measured by bioimpedance analysis, among Latvian children and adolescents participating in organized sports. METHODS Our study had a nationally representative sample of 6048 young athletes, aged 10-17 years. Their %BF was measured using a multifrequency, 8-pole, bioelectrical impedance leg-to-hand analyzer. RESULTS About 19.2% (CI 14.4-20.0) of boys and 15.1% (CI 14.0-16.3) of girls had a %BF value below the recommended levels. The %BF in young female athletes participating in aesthetic sports was lower than among their peers participating in other sports. Young male athletes participating in aesthetic sports had lower %BF levels at 10 and 12 years of age, compared with participants in weight-class sports; and lower levels of %BF from age 10-14 years, compared with participants in non-weight-sensitive sports. CONCLUSIONS Almost every fifth child and adolescent participating in organized sports displayed critically low body fat levels. Body fat needs to be assessed regularly in young athletes, to prevent negative consequences on health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fat-free mass (FFM) is lower in obese subjects with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) than in obese subjects without PWS. FFM prediction equations developed in non-PWS subjects may, thus, not work in PWS subjects. AIM To test whether the estimation of FFM from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in PWS subjects requires population-specific equations. METHODS Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, this study measured FFM in 27 PWS and 56 non-PWS obese women and evaluated its association with the impedance index at 50 kHz (ZI50), i.e. the ratio between squared height and whole-body impedance at 50 kHz. RESULTS At the same level of ZI50, PWS women had a lower FFM than non-PWS women. However, when PWS-specific equations were used, FFM was accurately estimated at the population level. An equation employing a dummy variable coding for PWS status was able to explain 85% of the variance of FFM with a root mean squared error of 3.3 kg in the pooled sample (n = 83). CONCLUSION Population-specific equations are needed to estimate FFM from BIA in obese PWS women.

Abstract
Background There is a need for a practical, inexpensive method to assess body composition in obese adolescents. This study aimed to 1) compare body composition parameters estimated by a stand-on, multi-frequency bioelectrical impendence (BIA) device, using a) the manufacturers’ equations, and b) published and derived equations with body composition measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and 2) assess percentage body fat (%BF) change after a weight loss intervention. Methods Participants were 66 obese adolescents, mean age (SD) 12.9 (2.0) years. Body composition was measured by Tanita BIA MC-180MA (Tanita BIA8) and DXA (GE-Lunar Prodigy). BIA resistance and reactance data at frequencies of 5, 50, 250 and 500 kHz, were used in published equations, and to generate a new prediction equation for fat-free mass (FFM) using a split-sample method. Approximately half (n = 34) of the adolescents had their body composition measured by DXA and BIA on two occasions, three to nine months apart. Results The correlations between FFM (kg), fat mass (kg) and %BF measured by BIA and DXA were 0.92, 0.93 and 0.78, respectively. The Tanita BIA8 manufacturers equations significantly (P < 0.001) overestimated FFM (4.3 kg [-5.3 to 13.9]) and underestimated %BF (-5.0% [-15 to 5.0]) compared to DXA. The mean differences between BIA derived equations and DXA measured body composition parameters were small (0.4 to 2.1%), not significant, but had large limits of agreements (~ ±15% for FFM). After the intervention mean %BF loss was similar by both methods (~1.5%), but with wide limits of agreement. Conclusion The Tanita BIA8 could be a valuable clinical tool to measure body composition at the group level, but is inaccurate for the individual obese adolescent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In adults, heart rate recovery is a predictor of mortality, while in adolescents it is associated with cardio-metabolic risk factors. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between body composition measures and heart rate recovery (HRR) after step test in Malaysian secondary school students. METHODS In the Malaysian Health and Adolescents Longitudinal Research Team (MyHEART) study, 1071 healthy secondary school students, aged 13 years old, participated in the step test. Parameters for body composition measures were body mass index z-score, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and waist height ratio. The step test was conducted by using a modified Harvard step test. Heart rate recovery of 1 minute (HRR1min) and heart rate recovery of 2 minutes (HRR2min) were calculated by the difference between the peak pulse rate during exercise and the resting pulse rate at 1 and 2 minutes, respectively. Analysis was done separately based on gender. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the association between the HRR parameters with body composition measures, while multiple regression analysis was used to determine which body composition measures was the strongest predictor for HRR. RESULTS For both gender groups, all body composition measures were inversely correlated with HRR1min. In girls, all body composition measures were inversely correlated with HRR2min, while in boys all body composition measures, except BMI z-score, were associated with HRR2min. In multiple regression, only waist circumference was inversely associated with HRR2min (p=0.024) in boys, while in girls it was body fat percentage for HRR2min (p=0.008). CONCLUSION There was an inverse association between body composition measurements and HRR among apparently healthy adolescents. Therefore, it is important to identify cardio-metabolic risk factors in adolescent as an early prevention of consequent adulthood morbidity. This reiterates the importance of healthy living which should start from young.

Abstract
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a practical method to estimate percentage body fat (%BF). In this systematic review, we aimed to assess validity, responsiveness, reliability and measurement error of BIA methods in estimating %BF in children and adolescents.We searched for relevant studies in Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane through November 2012. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts for inclusion, extracted data and rated methodological quality of the included studies. We performed a best evidence synthesis to synthesize the results, thereby excluding studies of poor quality. We included 50 published studies. Mean differences between BIA and reference methods (gold standard [criterion validity] and convergent measures of body composition [convergent validity]) were considerable and ranged from negative to positive values, resulting in conflicting evidence for criterion validity. We found strong evidence for a good reliability, i.e. (intra-class) correlations ≥0.82. However, test-retest mean differences ranged from 7.5% to 13.4% of total %BF in the included study samples, indicating considerable measurement error. Our systematic review suggests that BIA is a practical method to estimate %BF in children and adolescents. However, validity and measurement error are not satisfactory.

Abstract
Several definitions of paediatric abdominal obesity have been proposed but it is unclear whether they lead to similar results. We assessed the prevalence of abdominal obesity using five different waist circumference-based definitions and their agreement with total body fat (TBF) and abdominal fat (AF). Data from 190 girls and 162 boys (Ballabeina), and from 134 girls and 113 boys (Kinder-Sportstudie, KISS) aged 5–11 years were used. TBF was assessed by bioimpedance (Ballabeina) or dual energy X-ray absorption (KISS). On the basis of the definition used, the prevalence of abdominal obesity varied between 3.1 and 49.4% in boys, and 4.7 and 55.5% in girls (Ballabeina), and between 1.8 and 36.3% in boys and 4.5 and 37.3% in girls (KISS). Among children considered as abdominally obese by at least one definition, 32.0 (Ballabeina) and 44.7% (KISS) were considered as such by at least two (out of five possible) definitions. Using excess TBF or AF as reference, the areas under the receiver operating curve varied between 0.577 and 0.762 (Ballabeina), and 0.583 and 0.818 (KISS). We conclude that current definitions of abdominal obesity in children lead to wide prevalence estimates and should not be used until a standard definition can be proposed.

Abstract
We performed a cross-sectional study in 450 nonreferred preschool children aged 4 to 6 years to assess the association between hyperactivity/inattention with adiposity and lifestyle characteristics. Measurements included scores of hyperactivity/inattention, adiposity, objectively measured physical activity, television viewing, and eating habits. Higher scores of hyperactivity/inattention were associated with lower percentage body fat, higher levels of physical activity, and less time spent in sedentary activity (all P ≤ .01). However, higher scores of hyperactivity/inattention were also associated with more television viewing and less healthy eating habits (all P ≤ .04). Except for some selected eating habits (P ≥ .07), those relationships remained significant after adjustment for age, sex, and sociodemographic confounders. To conclude, higher scores of hyperactivity/inattention are linked to different lifestyle characteristics that may in part contribute to a future development of overweight/obesity. Precise mechanisms explaining these associations and possible preventive approaches should be further investigated.
