Air-stable redox-active nanomagnets with lanthanide spins radical-bridged by a metal-metal bond

Thirty Years of Hide-and-Seek: Capturing Abundant but Elusive MIII@C3v(8)-C82 Isomer, and the Study of Magnetic Anisotropy Induced in Dy3+ Ion by the Fullerene π-Ligand

Our knowledge about endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) is restricted to the structures with sufficient kinetic stability to be extracted from the arc-discharge soot and processed by chromatographic and structural techniques. For the most abundant rare-earth monometallofullerene MIII@C82, experimental studies repeatedly demonstrated C2v(9) and Cs(6) carbon cage isomers, while computations predicted equal stability of the "missing" C3v(8) isomer. Here we report that this isomer is indeed formed but has not been recovered from soot using standard protocols. Using a combination of redox extraction and subsequent benzylation and trifluoromethylation with single-crystal XRD analysis of CF3 adduct, we prove that Dy@C3v(8)-C82 is one of the most abundantly produced metallofullerenes, which was not identified in earlier studies because of the low kinetic stability. Further, using the Dy@C3v(8)-C82(CF3) and Dy@C3v(8)-C82(CH2Ph) monoadducts for the case study, we analyzed the role of metal-fullerene bonding on the single-ion magnetic anisotropy of Dy in EMFs. The multitechnique approach, combining ab initio calculations, EPR spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry, demonstrated that coordination of the Dy ion to the fullerene cage induces moderate, nonaxial, and very fluid magnetic anisotropy, which strongly varies with small alterations in the Dy-fullerene coordination geometry. As a result, Dy@C3v(8)-C82(CH2Ph) is a weak field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM), whose signatures of magnetic relaxation are detectable only below 3 K. Our results demonstrate that metal-cage interactions should have a detrimental effect on the SMM performance of EMFs. At the same time, the strong variability of the magnetic anisotropy with metal position suggests tunability and offers strategies for future progress.

CaY@C2n: Exploring Molecular Qubits with Ca-Y Metal-Metal Bonds

Metal-metal bonding is crucial in chemistry for advancing our understanding of the fundamental aspects of chemical bonds. Metal-metal bonds based on alkaline-earth (Ae) elements, especially the heavier Ae elements (Ca, Sr, and Ba), are rarely reported due to their high electropositivity. Herein, we report two heteronuclear di-EMFs CaY@Cs(6)-C82 and CaY@C2v(5)-C80, which contain unprecedented single-electron Ca-Y metal-metal bonds. These compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The crystallographic study of CaY@Cs(6)-C82 shows that Ca and Y are successfully encapsulated into the carbon cage with a Ca-Y distance of 3.691 Å. The CW-EPR study of both CaY@Cs(6)-C82 and CaY@C2v(5)-C80 exhibits a doublet, suggesting the presence of an unpaired electron located between Ca and Y. The combined experimental and theoretical results confirm the presence of a Ca-Y single-electron metal-metal bond with substantial covalent interaction, attributed to significant overlap between the 4s4p orbitals of Ca and the 5s5p4d orbitals of Y. Furthermore, pulse EPR spectroscopy was used to investigate the quantum coherence of the electron spin within this bond. The unpaired electron, characterized by its s orbital nature, is effectively protected by the carbon cage, resulting in efficient suppression of both spin-lattice relaxation and decoherence. CaY@Cs(6)-C82 behaves as an electron spin qubit, displaying a maximum decoherence time of 7.74 μs at 40 K. This study reveals an unprecedented Ae-rare-earth metal-metal bond stabilized by the fullerene cages and elucidates the molecular qubit properties stemming from their unique bonding character, highlighting their potential in quantum information processing applications.

Short Didysprosium Covalent Bond Enables High Magnetization Blocking Temperature of a Direct 4f-4f Coupled Dinuclear Single-Molecule Magnet

Coupling two magnetic anisotropic lanthanide ions via a direct covalent bond is an effective way to realize high magnetization blocking temperature of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) by suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), whereas so far only single-electron lanthanide-lanthanide bonds with relatively large bond distances are stabilized in which coupling between lanthanide and the single electron dominates over weak direct 4f-4f coupling. Herein, we report for the first time synthesis of short Dy(II)-Dy(II) single bond (3.61 Å) confined inside a carbon cage in the form of an endohedral metallofullerene Dy2@C82. Such a direct Dy(II)-Dy(II) covalent bond renders a strong Dy-Dy antiferromagnetic coupling that effectively quenches QTM at zero magnetic field, thus opening up magnetic hysteresis up to 25 K using a field sweep rate of 25 Oe/s, concomitant with a high 100 s magnetization blocking temperature (TB,100s) of 27.2 K.

Capturing Metal Fluoride inside a Carbon Cage

We report here a new type of metal fluoride cluster that can be stabilized inside fullerene via in situ fluorine encapsulation followed by exohedral trifluoromethylation, giving rise to rare-earth metal fluoride clusterfullerenes (FCFs) M2F@C80(CF3) (M = Gd and Y). The molecular structure of Gd2F@C80(CF3) was unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis to show a μ2-fluoride-bridged Gd-F-Gd cluster with short Gd-F bonds of 2.132(7) and 2.179(7) Å. The 19F NMR spectrum of the diamagnetic Y2F@C80(CF3) confirms the existence of the endohedral F atom, which exhibits a triplet with a large 19F-89Y coupling constant of 74 Hz and a high temperature sensitivity of the 19F chemical shift of 0.057 ppm/K. Theoretical studies reveal the ionic Y-F bonding nature arising from the highest electronegativity of the F element and an electronic configuration of [Y2F]5+@[C80]5- with an open-shell carbon cage, which thus necessitates the stabilization of FCFs by exohedral trifluoromethylation.

Ab initio-based determination of lanthanoid-radical exchange as visualised by inelastic neutron scattering

Magnetic exchange coupling can modulate the slow magnetic relaxation in single-molecule magnets. Despite this, elucidation of exchange coupling remains a significant challenge for the lanthanoid(iii) ions, both experimentally and computationally. In this work, the crystal field splitting and 4f-π exchange coupling in the erbium-semiquinonate complex [ErTp2dbsq] (Er-dbsq; Tp- = hydro-tris(1-pyrazolyl)borate, dbsqH2 = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-semiquinone) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry, and CASSCF-SO ab initio calculations. A related complex with a diamagnetic ligand, [ErTp2trop] (Er-trop; tropH = tropolone), has been used as a model for the crystal field splitting in the absence of coupling. Magnetic and INS data indicate antiferromagnetic exchange for Er-dbsq with a coupling constant of Jex = -0.23 meV (-1.8 cm-1) (-2Jex formalism) and good agreement is found between theory and experiment, with the low energy magnetic and spectroscopic properties well modelled. Most notable is the ability of the ab initio modelling to reproduce the signature of interference between localised 4f states and delocalised π-radical states that is evident in the Q-dependence of the exchange excitation. This work highlights the power of combining INS with EPR and magnetometry for determination of ground state properties, as well as the enhanced capability of CASSCF-SO ab initio calculations and purposely developed ab initio-based theoretical models. We deliver an unprecedentedly detailed representation of the entangled character of 4f-π exchange states, which is obtained via an accurate image of the spin-orbital transition density between the 4f-π exchange coupled wavefunctions.

Endohedral metallofullerene molecular nanomagnets

Magnetic lanthanide (Ln) metal complexes exhibiting magnetic bistability can behave as molecular nanomagnets, also known as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), suitable for storing magnetic information at the molecular level, thus attracting extensive interest in the quest for high-density information storage and quantum information technologies. Upon encapsulating Ln ion(s) into fullerene cages, endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) have been proven as a promising and versatile platform to realize chemically robust SMMs, in which the magnetic properties are able to be readily tailored by altering the configurations of the encapsulated species and the host cages. In this review, we present critical discussions on the molecular structures and magnetic characterizations of EMF-SMMs, with the focus on their peculiar molecular and electronic structures and on the intriguing molecular magnetism arising from such structural uniqueness. In this context, different families of magnetic EMFs are summarized, including mononuclear EMF-SMMs wherein single-ion anisotropy is decisive, dinuclear clusterfullerenes whose magnetism is governed by intramolecular magnetic interaction, and radical-bridged dimetallic EMFs with high-spin ground states that arise from the strong ferromagnetic coupling. We then discuss how molecular assemblies of SMMs can be constructed, in a way that the original SMM behavior is either retained or altered in a controlled manner, thanks to the chemical robustness of EMFs. Finally, on the basis of understanding the structure-magnetic property correlation, we propose design strategies for high-performance EMF-SMMs by engineering ligand fields, electronic structures, magnetic interactions, and molecular vibrations that can couple to the spin states.

Covalency versus magnetic axiality in Nd molecular magnets: Nd-photoluminescence, strong ligand-field, and unprecedented nephelauxetic effect in fullerenes NdM2N@C80 (M = Sc, Lu, Y)

Nd-based nitride clusterfullerenes NdM2N@C80 with rare-earth metals of different sizes (M = Sc, Y, Lu) were synthesized to elucidate the influence of the cluster composition, shape and internal strain on the structural and magnetic properties. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a very short Nd-N bond length in NdSc2N@C80. For Lu and Y analogs, the further shortening of the Nd-N bond and pyramidalization of the NdM2N cluster are predicted by DFT calculations as a result of the increased cluster size and a strain caused by the limited size of the fullerene cage. The short distance between Nd and nitride ions leads to a very large ligand-field splitting of Nd3+ of 1100-1200 cm-1, while the variation of the NdM2N cluster composition and concomitant internal strain results in the noticeable modulation of the splitting, which could be directly assessed from the well-resolved fine structure in the Nd-based photoluminescence spectra of NdM2N@C80 clusterfullerenes. Photoluminescence measurements also revealed an unprecedentedly strong nephelauxetic effect, pointing to a high degree of covalency. The latter appears detrimental to the magnetic axiality despite the strong ligand field. As a result, the ground magnetic state has considerable transversal components of the pseudospin g-tensor, and the slow magnetic relaxation of NdSc2N@C80 could be observed by AC magnetometry only in the presence of a magnetic field. A combination of the well-resolved magneto-optical states and slow relaxation of magnetization suggests that Nd clusterfullerenes can be useful building blocks for magneto-photonic quantum technologies.

Stability and Electronic Properties of Mixed Rare-Earth Tri-Metallofullerenes YxDy3-x@C80 (x = 1 or 2)

Tri-metallofullerenes, specifically M3@C80 where M denotes rare-earth metal elements, are molecules that possess intriguing magnetic properties. Typically, only one metal element is involved in a given tri-metallofullerene molecule. However, mixed tri-metallofullerenes, denoted as M1xM23-x@C80 (x = 1 or 2, M1 and M2 denote different metal elements), have not been previously discovered. The investigation of such mixed tri-metallofullerenes is of interest due to the potential introduction of distinct properties resulting from the interaction between different metal atoms. This paper presents the preparation and theoretical analysis of mixed rare-earth tri-metallofullerenes, specifically YxDy3-x@C80 (x = 1 or 2). Through chemical oxidation of the arc-discharge produced soot, the formation of tri-metallofullerene cations, namely Y2Dy@C80+ and YDy2@C80+, has been observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have revealed that the tri-metallofullerenes YxDy3-x@C80 (x = 1 or 2) exhibit a low oxidation potential, significantly lower than other fullerenes such as C60 and C70. This low oxidation potential can be attributed to the relatively high energy level of a singly occupied orbital. Additionally, the oxidized species demonstrate a large HOMO-LUMO gap similar to that of YxDy3-xN@C80, underscoring their high chemical stability. Theoretical investigations have uncovered the presence of a three-center two-electron metal-metal bond at the center of Y2DY@C80+ and YDy2@C80+. This unique multi-center bond assists in alleviating the electrostatic repulsion between the metal ions, thereby contributing to the overall stability of the cations. These mixed rare-earth tri-metallofullerenes hold promise as potential candidates for single-molecule magnets.

Increasing the Magnetic Blocking Temperature of Single-Molecule Magnets

The synthesis of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), magnetic complexes capable of retaining magnetization blocking for a long time at elevated temperatures, has been a major concern for magnetochemists over the last three decades. In this review, we describe basic SMMs and the different approaches that allow high magnetization-blocking temperatures to be reached. We focus on the basic factors affecting magnetization blocking, magnetic axiality and the height of the blocking barrier, which can be used to group different families of complexes in terms of their SMM efficiency. Finally, we discuss several practical routes for the design of mono- and polynuclear complexes that could be applied in memory devices.

Nd─Nd Bond in Ih and D5h Cage Isomers of Nd2 @C80 Stabilized by Electrophilic CF3 Addition

Synthesis of molecular compounds with metal-metal bonds between 4f elements is recognized as one of the fascinating milestones in lanthanide metallochemistry. The main focus of such studies is on heavy lanthanides due to the interest in their magnetism, while bonding between light lanthanides remains unexplored. In this work, the Nd─Nd bonding in Nd-dimetallofullerenes as a case study of metal-metal bonding between early lanthanides is demonstrated. Combined experimental and computational study proves that pristine Nd2 @C80 has an open shell structure with a single electron occupying the Nd─Nd bonding orbital. Nd2 @C80 is stabilized by a one-electron reduction and further by the electrophilic CF3 addition to [Nd2 @C80 ]- . Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the formation of two Nd2 @C80 (CF3 ) isomers with D5h -C80 and Ih -C80 carbon cages, both featuring a single-electron Nd─Nd bond with the length of 3.78-3.79 Å. The mutual influence of the exohedral CF3 group and endohedral metal dimer in determining the molecular structure of the adducts is analyzed. Unlike Tb or Dy analogs, which are strong single-molecule magnets with high blocking temperature of magnetization, the slow relaxation of magnetization in Nd2 @Ih -C80 (CF3 ) is detectable via out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility only below 3 K and in the presence of magnetic field.

Low-temperature motion of the scandium bimetal in endofullerene Sc2@C80(CH2Ph)

The spin decoherence of the scandium bimetal in Sc2@C80(CH2Ph) is studied at low temperatures (20-120 K) by the electron spin echo technique. The correlation between the magnetic quantum number m of the total spin state of the scandium nuclei j and the decay rates is established. For the total spin j = 5, a decrease of the phase relaxation time by a factor of two is observed by changing the transition from m = -1 to m = +1 and m = -3 at 120 K. The observed results are rationalized in the framework of the rotational diffusion of the endohedral fragment in the fullerene cage. It is found that the characteristic rotation time is of the order of a microsecond at 100 K and increases at lower temperatures.

Actinide-lanthanide single electron metal-metal bond formed in mixed-valence di-metallofullerenes

Understanding metal-metal bonding involving f-block elements has been a challenging goal in chemistry. Here we report a series of mixed-valence di-metallofullerenes, ThDy@C2n (2n = 72, 76, 78, and 80) and ThY@C2n (2n = 72 and 78), which feature single electron actinide-lanthanide metal-metal bonds, characterized by structural, spectroscopic and computational methods. Crystallographic characterization unambiguously confirmed that Th and Y or Dy are encapsulated inside variably sized fullerene carbon cages. The ESR study of ThY@D3h(5)-C78 shows a doublet as expected for an unpaired electron interacting with Y, and a SQUID magnetometric study of ThDy@D3h(5)-C78 reveals a high-spin ground state for the whole molecule. Theoretical studies further confirm the presence of a single-electron bonding interaction between Y or Dy and Th, due to a significant overlap between hybrid spd orbitals of the two metals.

Steering Single-Electron Metal-Metal Bonds and Hyperfine Coupling between a Transition Metal-Lanthanide Heteronuclear Bimetal Confined in Carbon Cages

Metal complexes bearing single-electron metal-metal bonds (SEMBs) exhibit unusual electronic structures evoking strong magnetic coupling, and such bonds can be stabilized in the form of dimetallofullerenes (di-EMFs) in which two metals are confined in a carbon cage. Up to now, only a few di-EMFs containing SEMBs are reported, which are all based on a high-symmetry icosahedral (Ih) C80 cage embedding homonuclear rare-earth bimetals, and a chemical modification of the Ih-C80 cage is required to stabilize the SEMB. Herein, by introducing 3d-block transition metal titanium (Ti) along with 4f-block lanthanum (La) into the carbon cage, we synthesized the first crystallographically characterized SEMB-containing 3d-4f heteronuclear di-EMFs based on pristine fullerene cages. Four novel La-Ti heteronuclear di-EMFs were isolated, namely, LaTi@D3h(5)-C78, LaTi@Ih(7)-C80, LaTi@D5h(6)-C80, and LaTi@C2v(9)-C82, and their molecular structures were unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Upon increasing the cage size from C78 to C82, the La-Ti distance decreases from 4.31 to 3.97 Å, affording fine-tuning of the metal-metal bonding and hyperfine coupling, as evidenced by an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic study. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the existence of SEMB in all four LaTi@C2n di-EMFs, and the accumulation of electron density between La and Ti atoms shifts gradually from the proximity of the Ti atom inside C78 to the center of the LaTi bimetal inside C82 due to the decrease of the La-Ti distance. The electronic properties of LaTi@C2n heteronuclear dimetallofullerenes differ apparently from their homonuclear La2@C2n counterparts, revealing the peculiarity of heteronuclear dimetallofullerenes with the involvement of 3d-block transition metal Ti.

Two Metastable Endohedral Metallofullerenes Sc2C2@C1(39656)-C82 and Sc2C2@C1(51383)-C84: Direct-C2-Insertion Products from Their Most Stable Precursors

Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are sub-nano carbon materials with diverse applications, yet their formation mechanism, particularly for metastable isomers, remains ambiguous. The current theoretical methods focus mainly on the most stable isomers, leading to limited predictability of metastable ones due to their low stabilities and yields. Herein, we report the successful isolation and characterization of two metastable EMFs, Sc₂C₂@C₁(39656)-C₈₂ and Sc₂C₂@C₁(51383)-C₈₄, which violate the isolated pentagon rule (IPR). These two non-IPR EMFs exhibit a rare case of planar and pennant-like Sc₂C₂ clusters, which can be considered hybrids of the common butterfly-shaped and linear configurations. More importantly, the theoretical results reveal that despite being metastable, these two non-IPR EMFs survived as the products from their most stable precursors, Sc₂C₂@C_2v(5)-C₈₀ and Sc₂C₂@C_s(6)-C₈₂, via a C₂ insertion during the post-formation annealing stages. We propose a systematic theoretical method for predicting metastable EMFs during the post-formation stages. The unambiguous molecular-level structural evidence, combined with the theoretical calculation results, provides valuable insights into the formation mechanisms of EMFs, shedding light on the potential of post-formation mechanisms as a promising approach for EMF synthesis.

Lanthanide-radical single-molecule magnets: current status and future challenges

In the field of molecular magnetism, the lanthanide-radical (Ln-Rad) method has become one of the most appealing tactics for introducing strong magnetic interactions and has spurred on the booming development of heterospin single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The article is a timely retrospect on the research progress of Ln-Rad heterospin systems and special attention is invested on low dimensional Ln-Rad compounds with SMM behavior, primarily concerning with nitrogen-based radicals, semiquinone and nitroxide radicals. Rational design, molecular structures, magnetic behaviors and magneto-structural correlations are highlighted. Meanwhile, particular attention is focused on the influence of exchange couplings on the dynamic magnetic properties, with the purpose of helping to guide the design of prospective radical-based Ln-SMMs.

Enhancing the Magnetization Blocking Energy of Biradical-Metal System by Merging Discrete Complexes into One-Dimensional Chains

The reaction of nitronyl nitroxide biradical NITPhMeImbis [5-(2-methylimidazole)-1,3-bis(1-oxyl-3'-oxido-4',4',5',5'-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-benzene] with Ln(hfac)₃  ⋅ 2H₂ O and Cu(hfac)₂ (hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetonate), led to two series of 2p-3d-4f complexes, namely, nona-spin clusters, [Ln₂ Cu₃ (hfac)₁₂ (NITPhMeImbis)₂ ] (Ln=Gd 1, Dy 2), or one-dimensional chains [LnCu₂ (hfac)₇ (NITPhMeImbis)] (Ln=Y 3, Dy 4, Tb 5) depending on the temperature of the reaction. All five complexes contain a biradical-Ln unit in which the biradical chelates the Ln^III ion by the means of one aminoxyl (i. e. NO) group of each NIT unit. For the discrete complexes, a Cu(hfac)₂ links two biradical-Ln units via one of the remaining NO groups, while for the chain compounds, the two remaining NO groups of the biradical-Ln moiety are each coordinated to a Cu(hfac)₂ unit to form a 1D coordination polymer. Moreover, a terminal Cu(hfac)₂ unit is coordinated to the imidazole-N atom of the NITPhMeImbis ligand. Spin dynamics investigations evidenced the onset of slow relaxation of the magnetization for 2, whereas 4 and 5 exhibit a typical single-chain magnet behavior. This highlights the vital role of the 1D spin correlation in the blocking of the magnetization. These results illustrate that from the same basic building blocks, magnetic relaxation can be carefully modulated by structural adjustments.

Strategies to quench quantum tunneling of magnetization in lanthanide single molecule magnets

Enhancing blocking temperature (T_B) is one of the holy grails in Single Molecule Magnets(SMMs), as any future potential application in this class of molecules is directly correlated to this parameter. Among many factors contributing to a reduction of T_B value, Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetisation (QTM), a phenomenon that is a curse or a blessing based on the application sought after, tops the list. Theoretical tools based on density functional and ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO methods have played a prominent role in estimating various spin Hamiltonian parameters and establishing the mechanism of magnetization relaxation in this class of molecules. Particularly, various strategies to quench QTM effects go hand-in-hand with experiments, and different methods proposed to quell QTM effects are scattered in the literature. In this perspective, we have explored various approaches that are proposed in the literature to quench QTM effects, and these include the role of (i) local symmetry of lanthanides, (ii) super-exchange interaction in {3d-4f} complexes, (iii) direct-exchange interaction in {radical-4f} and metal-metal bonded complexes to suppress the QTM, (iv) utilizing external stimuli such as an electric field or pressure to modulate the QTM and (v) avoiding QTM effects by stabilising toroidal states in 4f and {3d-4f} clusters. We believe the strategies summarized here will help to design new-generation SMMs.

The Various Packing Structures of Tb@C82 (I, II) Isomers in Their Cocrystals with Ni(OEP)

Soot-containing terbium (Tb)-embedded fullerenes were prepared by evaporation of Tb₄O₇-doped graphite rods in an electric arc discharge chamber. After 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene extraction of the soot and rotary evaporation of the extract, a solid product was obtained and then dissolved into toluene by ultrasonication. Through a three-stage high-pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) process, Tb@C₈₂ (I, II) isomers were isolated from the toluene solution of fullerenes and metallofullerenes. With the success of the growth of cocrystals of Tb@C₈₂ (I, II) with Ni(OEP), the molecular structures of Tb@C₈₂ (I) and Tb@C₈₂ (II) were confirmed to be Tb@C_2v(9)-C₈₂ and Tb@Cs(6)-C₈₂, respectively, based on crystallographic data from X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Moreover, it was found that Tb@C₈₂ (I, II) isomers demonstrated different packing behaviors in their cocrystals with Ni(OEP). Tb@C_2v(9)-C₈₂ forms a 1:1 cocrystal with Ni(OEP), in which Tb@C_2v(9)-C₈₂ is aligned diagonally between the Ni(OEP) bilayers to form zigzag chains. In sharp contrast, Tb@Cs(6)-C₈₂ forms a 2:2 cocrystal with Ni(OEP), in which Tb@Cs(6)-C₈₂ forms a centrosymmetric dimer that is aligned linearly with Ni(OEP) pairs to form one-dimensional structures in the a-c lattice plane. In addition, the distance of a Ni atom in Ni(OEP) to the Cs(6)-C₈₂ cage is much shorter than that to the C_2v(9)-C₈₂ one, indicative of a stronger π-π interaction between Ni(OEP) and the C₈₂ carbon cage in the cocrystal of Tb@C_S(6)-C₈₂ and Ni(OEP). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the regionally selective dimerization of Tb@C_S(6)-C₈₂ is the result of a dominant unpaired spin existing on a particular C atom of the C_S(6)-C₈₂ cage.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Pentagonal-bipyramidal 4d and 5d complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum as a unique platform for advanced single-molecule magnets: current state and perspectives

This article overviews the current state and prospects of the concept of advanced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) based on low-spin (S = 1/2) pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) 4d³ and 5d³ complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum. This approach is based on the unique property of PBP 4d³ and 5d³ complexes to cause highly anisotropic spin coupling of perfect uniaxial symmetry, -J_zSziSzj - J_xy(SxiSxj + SyiSyj), regardless of the local geometric symmetry. The M(4d/5d)-M(3d) exchange-coupled pairs in the apical positions of the PBP complexes produce Ising-type exchange interactions (|J_z| > |J_xy|), which serve as a powerful source of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of a SMM cluster. In polynuclear heterometallic 4d/5d-3d complexes embodying PBP 4d/5d units and high-spin 3d ions, anisotropic Ising-type exchange interactions produce a double-well potential with high energy barriers U_eff, which is controlled by the anisotropic exchange parameters J_z, J_xy. Theoretical analysis shows that the barrier is proportional to the difference |J_z - J_xy| and to the number n of the apical 4d/5d-3d pairs in a SMM cluster, U_eff ∝ |J_z - J_xy|n, which provides an opportunity to scale up the barrier U_eff and blocking temperature T_B up to the record values. A novel family of 4d/5d complexes with forced PBP coordination provided by structurally rigid planar pentadentate Schiff-base ligands in the equatorial plane is discussed as a better alternative to the cyanometallates. The possibility of a significant increase in the anisotropic exchange parameters J_z, J_xy in PBP complexes with monoatomic apical μ-bridging ligands is examined. The basic principles of molecular engineering the highest barrier through anisotropic exchange interactions of PBP 4d/5d complexes are formulated. The theoretical and experimental results taken together indicate that the concept of high-performance SMMs based on 4d/5d PBP complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum is an attractive alternative to the currently dominant lanthanide-based SMM strategy.

Electrical devices designed based on inorganic clusters

The idea of exploring the bottom brink of material science has been carried out for more than two decades. Clusters science is the frontmost study of all nanoscale structures. Being an example of 0-dimensional quantum dot, nanocluster serves as the bridge between atomic and conventionally understood solid-state physics. The forming mechanism of clusters is found to be the mutual effects of electronic and geometric configuration. It is found that electronic shell structure influences the properties and geometric structure of the cluster until its size becomes larger, where electronic effects submerge in geometric structure. The discrete electronic structures depend on the size and conformation of clusters, which can be controlled artificially for potential device applications. Especially, small clusters with a size of 1-2 nm, whose electronic states are possibly discrete enough to overcome thermal fluctuations, are expected to build a single-electron transistor with room temperature operation. However, exciting as the progress may be seen, cluster science still falls within the territory of merely the extension of atomic and molecular science. Its production rate limits the scientific and potential application research of nanoclusters. It is suggested in this review that the mass-produce ability without losing the atomic precision selectivity would be the milestone for nanoclusters to advance to material science.

Capturing the Long-Sought Dy@C2v(5)-C80 via Benzyl Radical Stabilization

Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are one type of intriguing metal/carbon hybrid molecule with the molecule configuration of sphere cavity-encapsulating metal ions/metal clusters due to their unique physicochemical properties and corresponding application in the fields of biological materials, single molecule magnet materials and energy conversion materials. Although the EMF family is growing, and versatile EMFs have been successfully synthesized and confirmed using crystal structures, some expected EMF members have not been observed using the conventional fullerene separation and purify strategy. These missing EMFs raise an interesting scientific issue as to whether this is due to the difficulty in separating them from the in situ formed carbon soot. Herein, we successfully captured a long-sought dysprosium-based EMF bearing a C_2v(5)-C₈₀ cage (Dy@C_2v(5)-C₈₀) in the form of Dy@C_2v(5)-C₈₀(CH₂Ph)(Ph = -C₆H₅) from carbon soot containing versatile EMFs using simple benzyl radical functionalization and unambiguously confirmed the molecule structure using single crystal X-ray diffraction characterization. Meanwhile, the crystal structure of Dy@C_2v(5)-C₈₀(CH₂Ph) showed that a single benzyl group was grafted onto the (5,6,6)-carbon, suggesting the open-shell electronic configuration of Dy@C_2v(5)-C₈₀. The theoretical calculations unveiled that the benzyl radical addition enables the modulation of the electronic configuration of Dy@C_2v(5)-C₈₀ and the corresponding stabilization of Dy@C_2v(5)-C₈₀ in conventional organic solvents. This facile stabilization strategy via benzyl radical addition exhibits the considerable capability to capture these missing EMFs, with the benefit of enriching the endohedral fullerene family.

Lanthanide single-molecule magnets with high anisotropy barrier: where to from here?

Stabilities, Geometries, Electronic Structures, and Conversion Rules of Carbide Cluster Metallofullerenes

Since the discovery of the first carbide cluster metallofullerene (CCMF) Sc₂ C₂ @C₈₄ in 2001, CCMFs have attracted great concerns with variable structures and fascinating characteristics. To date, there are hundreds of studies on CCMFs. Crystallography studies on CCMFs are carried out by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Theoretical calculations can also be used to study CCMFs in detail without being limited by low experimental yields. This review analyzes the stability of CCMFs reported previously, and indicates that the C₂ unit contributes a lot to their stability. At the same time, the relationship between the structures of inner carbide cluster and cage size is systematically discussed, and the four-electron transfer always occurs. Furthermore, the possible transformation rule between di-EMFs and CCMFs is indicated. Finally, an outlook regarding the future developments and applications of CCMFs is presented.

The High-Temperature Soft Ferromagnetic Molecular Materials Based on [W(CN)6(bpy)]2-/- System

The synthesis of molecular materials with magnetic properties, in particular ferromagnetic properties, has been the subject of interest in coordination chemistry for decades. In the last three decades, research has accelerated, as it has emerged that creating bridging systems based on cyanido ligands is a good and relatively simple way to create complex polymer structures exhibiting magnetic properties. Based on many years of personal experience in the field of the synthesis of polycyanido systems, supported by comprehensive structural analysis, a simple method of transforming cyanido complexes into soft ferromagnetic materials with a Curie temperature (T_C) higher than the thermal decomposition temperature, usually above 150 °C has been developed. Two soft ferromagnetic materials based on zinc and cadmium hexacyanido salts in the system with [W(CN)₆(bpy)]^2−/− anions are presented. The crystal structures (X-ray single crystal as well as XRD) of the precursors and the properties of the ferromagnetic materials are discussed. Most importantly, a patented method of synthesizing this type of material, based on which we obtain more than 80 soft, high-temperature ferromagnetic compounds, which proves the wide spectrum of this method, is also presented.

Metamagnetic transition and a loss of magnetic hysteresis caused by electron trapping in monolayers of single-molecule magnet Tb2@C79N

Realization of stable spin states in surface-supported magnetic molecules is crucial for their applications in molecular spintronics, memory storage or quantum information processing. In this work, we studied the surface magnetism of dimetallo-azafullerene Tb₂@C₇₉N, showing a broad magnetic hysteresis in a bulk form. Surprisingly, monolayers of Tb₂@C₇₉N exhibited a completely different behavior, with the prevalence of a ground state with antiferromagnetic coupling at low magnetic field and a metamagnetic transition in the magnetic field of 2.5-4 T. Monolayers of Tb₂@C₇₉N were deposited onto Cu(111) and Au(111) by evaporation in ultra-high vacuum conditions, and their topography and electronic structure were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in combination with DFT studies, revealed that the nitrogen atom of the azafullerene cage tends to avoid metallic surfaces. Magnetic properties of the (sub)monolayers were then studied by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Tb-M_4,5 absorption edge. While in bulk powder samples Tb₂@C₇₉N behaves as a single-molecule magnet with ferromagnetically coupled magnetic moments and blocking of magnetization at 28 K, its monolayers exhibited a different ground state with antiferromagnetic coupling of Tb magnetic moments. To understand if this unexpected behavior is caused by a strong hybridization of fullerenes with metallic substrates, XMCD measurements were also performed for Tb₂@C₇₉N adsorbed on h-BN|Rh(111) and MgO|Ag(100). The co-existence of two forms of Tb₂@C₇₉N was found on these substrates as well, but magnetization curves showed narrow magnetic hysteresis detectable up to 25 K. The non-magnetic state of Tb₂@C₇₉N in monolayers is assigned to anionic Tb₂@C₇₉N^- species with doubly-occupied Tb-Tb bonding orbital and antiferromagnetic coupling of the Tb moments. A charge transfer from the substrate or trapping of secondary electrons are discussed as a plausible origin of these species.

Supramolecular heptanuclear Ln-Cu complexes involving nitronyl nitroxide biradicals: structure and magnetic behavior

Four novel heptanuclear Ln-Cu complexes with the formula [Ln₂Cu(hfac)₈(NITPhTzbis)₂][LnCu(hfac)₅(NITPhTzbis)]₂ (LnCu = YCu 1, TbCu 2, DyCu 3 and HoCu 4; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were successfully constructed by employing the triazole functionalized nitronyl nitroxide biradical ligand NITPh-Tzbis (NITPh-Tzbis = 5-(1,2,4-triazolyl)-1,3-bis(1'-oxyl-3'-oxido-4',4',5',5'-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene). These hetero-tri-spin complexes are composed of two biradical-bridged dinuclear [(LnCu(hfac)₅(NITPhTzbis)] units and one trinuclear [Ln₂Cu(hfac)₈(NITPhTzbis)₂] unit which form a heptanuclear supramolecular structure through π-π interactions. Magnetic susceptibility investigations indicate that ferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate at low temperature for this supramolecular system which can be attributed to the Ln-nitroxide exchange and intramolecular NIT⋯NIT coupling mediated by the m-phenylene moiety. The DyCu derivative was found to exhibit a slow magnetic relaxation behavior.

Imaging the Single-Electron Ln-Ln Bonding Orbital in a Dimetallofullerene Molecular Magnet

Chemically robust single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with sufficiently high blocking temperatures T_B are among the key building blocks for the realization of molecular spintronic or quantum computing devices. Such device applications require access to the magnetic system of a SMM molecule by means of electronic transport, which primarily depends on the interaction of magnetic orbitals with the electronic states of the metallic electrodes. Scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with ab initio calculations allows to directly address the unoccupied component of the single-electron molecular orbital that mediates the ferromagnetic exchange coupling between two 4f ions within a lanthanide endohedral dimetallofullerene deposited on a graphene surface. The single-electron metal-metal bond provides a direct access to the molecule's magnetic system in the transport experiments, paving the way for investigation and controlled manipulation of the spin system of individual dimetallofullerene SMMs, essential for molecular spintronics.

Single-Molecule Magnets beyond a Single Lanthanide Ion: The Art of Coupling

The promising future of storing and processing quantized information at the molecular level has been attracting the study of Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) for almost three decades. Although some recent breakthroughs are mainly about the SMMs containing only one lanthanide ion, we believe SMMs can tell a much deeper story than the single-ion anisotropy. Here in this Perspective, we will try to draw a unified picture of SMMs as a delicately coupled spin system between multiple spin centres. The hierarchical couplings will be presented step-by-step, from the intra-atomic hyperfine coupling, to the direct and indirect intra-molecular couplings with neighbouring spin centres, and all the way to the inter-molecular and spin–phonon couplings. Along with the discussions on their distinctive impacts on the energy level structures and thus magnetic behaviours, a promising big picture for further studies is proposed, encouraging the multifaceted developments of molecular magnetism and beyond.

In this Perspective, we draw a unified picture for single-molecule magnets as delicately coupled spin systems, discuss the hierarchical couplings (from intra-atomic to inter-molecular) and their distinctive impacts on the magnetic behaviours.

Electrophilic Trifluoromethylation of Dimetallofullerene Anions en Route to Air-Stable Single-Molecule Magnets with High Blocking Temperature of Magnetization

Lanthanide dimetallofullerenes with single-electron M-M bonds are an important class of single molecular magnets and qubit candidates, but stabilization of their unique electronic and spin structure in the form of a neutral molecule requires functionalization of the fullerene cage with a single radical group. The lack of selectivity of the currently available procedure results in a complicated and tedious separation process. Here we demonstrate that electrophilic trifluoromethylation of a mixture of metallofullerene anions with Umemoto reagent II is highly selective toward M₂@C₈₀^- (M = Tb, Y) anions, yielding M₂@C₈₀(CF₃) monoadducts as the main reaction product. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction study proved attachment of the CF₃ group to the pentagon/hexagon/hexagon junction and revealed that positions of metal atoms inside the fullerene cage in the cocrystal with NiOEP are strongly related to the position of the porphyrin moieties. Magnetic characterization of Tb₂@C₈₀(CF₃) showed that it is a robust single-molecule magnet with broad magnetic hysteresis, 100 s blocking temperature of 25 K, and the relaxation barrier of 801(4) K, corresponding to the flipping of the Tb magnetic moment in the strongly ferromagnetically coupled [Tb³⁺-e-Tb³⁺] spin system.

Coordination anion effects on the geometry and magnetic interaction of binuclear Dy2 single-molecule magnets

Two new dimeric dysprosium(III) complexes, [Dy₂(HL)₂(SCN)₂]·2CH₃CN (1) and [Dy₂(HL)₂(NO₃)₂]·2CH₃CN·2H₂O (2), have been assembled using the H₃L multidentate ligand (H₃L = 2,2'-((((2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene))bis((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl))bis(methylene))diphenol). The use of different coordination anions for the two complexes results in distinct coordination geometries of the metal sites. The Dy centers in complexes 1 and 2 display capped octahedron and triangular dodecahedron coordination geometries, respectively. Consequently, the two compounds exhibit distinct dc and ac magnetic properties. Complex 1 behaves as a single molecule magnet (SMM) while no SMM behavior is observed for complex 2. Although complexes 1 and 2 possess a similar core of Dy₂O₂, their different coordination anions lead to two distinct magnetic interactions, namely ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively. Ab initio calculations reveal that these interactions may result from strong intramolecular dipolar couplings that are ferromagnetic for 1 but antiferromagnetic for 2, while exchange couplings are antiferromagnetic in both cases.

Exceptionally High Blocking Temperature of 17 K in a Surface-Supported Molecular Magnet

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are among the most promising building blocks for future magnetic data storage or quantum computing applications, owing to magnetic bistability and long magnetic relaxation times. The practical device integration requires realization of 2D surface assemblies of SMMs, where each magnetic unit shows magnetic relaxation being sufficiently slow at application-relevant temperatures. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that sub-monolayers of Dy₂ @C₈₀ (CH₂ Ph) dimetallofullerenes prepared on graphene by electrospray deposition exhibit magnetic behavior fully comparable to that of the bulk. Magnetic hysteresis and relaxation time measurements show that the magnetic moment remains stable for 100 s at 17 K, marking the blocking temperature T_B(100) , being not only in excellent agreement with that of the bulk sample but also representing by far the highest one detected for a surface-supported single-molecule magnet. The reported findings give a boost to the efforts to stabilize and address the spin degree of freedom in molecular magnets aiming at the realization of SMM-based spintronic units.

Temperature-dependent dynamics of endohedral fullerene Sc2@C80(CH2Ph) studied by EPR spectroscopy

Endohedral fullerenes are promising materials for the quantum information and quantum processing due to the unique properties of the electron-nuclear spin system well isolated from the environment inside the fullerene cage. The endofullerene Sc₂@C₈₀(CH₂Ph) features a strong hyperfine interaction between one electron spin 1/2 localized at the Sc₂ dimer and two equivalent ⁴⁵Sc nuclear spins 7/2, which yields 64 well resolved EPR transitions. We report a comprehensive analysis of the temperature dependence of the EPR spectrum of Sc₂@C₈₀(CH₂Ph) dissolved in d-toluene measured in a wide temperature range above and below the melting point. The nature of the electron spin coherence phase memory is investigated. The properties of all resonance lines in a liquid phase were treated within the model of the free rotational diffusion. Both, analytical expressions and numerical examination provide an excellent agreement between the experimental and simulated spectra. A detailed study of the experimental data confirms the assumption of the independent motions of the fullerene cage and the Sc₂ core. The data obtained show three regimes of molecular motion detected at different temperatures: the free rotation of both the fullerene cage and its bi-metal core, the motion of the core in the frozen fullerene cage, and, finally, a state with a fixed structure of both parts of the metallofullerene molecules. The data analysis reveals a significant nuclear quadrupole interaction playing an important role for the mixing of the different nuclear spin multiplets.

Bias-tunable two-dimensional magnetic and topological materials

The search for novel two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial for the development of next generation technologies such as electronics, optoelectronics, electrochemistry and biomedicine. In this work, we designed a series of 2D materials based on endohedral fullerenes and revealed that many of them integrate different functions in a single system, such as ferroelectricity with large electric dipole moments, multiple magnetic phases with both strong magnetic anisotropy and high Curie temperature, and quantum spin Hall effect or quantum anomalous Hall effect with robust topologically protected edge states. We further proposed a new type of topological field-effect transistor. These findings provide a strategy for using fullerenes as building blocks for the synthesis of novel 2D materials which can be easily controlled with a local electric field.

NMR for Single Ion Magnets

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is particularly sensitive to the electronic structure of matter and is thus a powerful tool to characterize in-depth the magnetic properties of a system. NMR is indeed increasingly recognized as an ideal tool to add precious structural information for the development of Single Ion Magnets, small complexes that are recently gaining much popularity due to their quantum computing and spintronics applications. In this review, we recall the theoretical principles of paramagnetic NMR, with particular attention to lanthanoids, and we give an overview of the recent advances in this field.

Strong Ferromagnetic Exchange Coupling and Single-Molecule Magnetism in MoS43--Bridged Dilanthanide Complexes

We report the synthesis and characterization of the trinuclear 4d-4f compounds [Co(C₅Me₅)₂][(C₅Me₅)₂Ln(μ-S)₂Mo(μ-S)₂Ln(C₅Me₅)₂], 1-Ln (Ln = Y, Gd, Tb, Dy), containing the highly polarizable MoS₄^3- bridging unit. UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectra and DFT calculations of 1-Ln reveal a low-energy metal-to-metal charge transfer transition assigned to charge transfer from the singly occupied 4d_z² orbital of Mo^V to the empty 5d orbitals of the lanthanides (4d in the case of 1-Y), mediated by sulfur-based 3p orbitals. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra collected for 1-Y in a tetrahydrofuran solution show large ⁸⁹Y hyperfine coupling constants of A_⊥ = 23 MHz and A_|| = 26 MHz, indicating the presence of significant yttrium-localized unpaired electron density. Magnetic susceptibility data support similar electron delocalization and ferromagnetic Ln-Mo exchange for 1-Gd, 1-Tb, and 1-Dy. This ferromagnetic exchange gives rise to an S = 15/2 ground state for 1-Gd and one of the largest magnetic exchange constants involving Gd^III observed to date, with J_Gd-Mo = +16.1(2) cm^-1. Additional characterization of 1-Tb and 1-Dy by ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that both compounds exhibit slow magnetic relaxation. Although a Raman magnetic relaxation process is dominant for both 1-Tb and 1-Dy, an extracted thermal relaxation barrier of U_eff = 68 cm^-1 for 1-Dy is the largest yet reported for a complex containing a paramagnetic 4d metal center. Together, these results provide a potentially generalizable route to enhanced nd-4f magnetic exchange, revealing opportunities for the design of new nd-4f single-molecule magnets and bulk magnetic materials.

Capturing the Missing Carbon Cage Isomer of C84 via Mutual Stabilization of a Triangular Monometallic Cyanide Cluster

Monometallic cyanide clusterfullerenes (CYCFs) represent a unique branch of endohedral clusterfullerenes with merely one metal atom encapsulated, offering a model system for elucidating structure-property correlation, while up to now only C₈₂ and C₇₆ cages have been isolated for the pristine CYCFs. C₈₄ is one of the most abundant fullerenes and has 24 isomers obeying the isolated pentagon rule (IPR), among which 14 isomers have been already isolated, whereas the C_2v(17)-C₈₄ isomer has lower relative energy than several isolated isomers but never been found for empty and endohedral fullerenes. Herein, four novel C₈₄-based pristine CYCFs with variable encapsulated metals and isomeric cages, including MCN@C₂(13)-C₈₄ (M = Y, Dy, Tb) and DyCN@C_2v(17)-C₈₄, have been synthesized and isolated, fulfilling the first identification of the missing C_2v(17)-C₈₄ isomer, which can be interconverted from the C₂(13)-C₈₄ isomer through two steps of Stone-Wales transformation. The molecular structures of these four C₈₄-based CYCFs are determined unambiguously by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Surprisingly, although the ionic radii of Y³⁺, Dy³⁺, and Tb³⁺ differ slightly by only 0.01 Å, such a subtle difference leads to an obvious change in the metal-cage interactions, as inferred from the distance between the metal atom and the nearest hexagon center of the C₂(13)-C₈₄ cage. On the other hand, upon altering the isomeric cage from DyCN@C₂(13)-C₈₄ to DyCN@C_2v(17)-C₈₄, the Dy-cage distance changes as well, indicating the interplay between the encapsulated DyCN cluster and the outer cage. Therefore, we demonstrate that the metal-cage interactions within CYCFs can be steered via both internal and external routes.

Characterization of a strong covalent Th3+-Th3+ bond inside an Ih(7)-C80 fullerene cage

The nature of the actinide-actinide bonds is of fundamental importance to understand the electronic structure of the 5f elements. It has attracted considerable theoretical attention, but little is known experimentally as the synthesis of these chemical bonds remains extremely challenging. Herein, we report a strong covalent Th-Th bond formed between two rarely accessible Th³⁺ ions, stabilized inside a fullerene cage nanocontainer as Th₂@I_h(7)-C₈₀. This compound is synthesized using the arc-discharge method and fully characterized using several techniques. The single-crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis determines that the two Th atoms are separated by 3.816 Å. Both experimental and quantum-chemical results show that the two Th atoms have formal charges of +3 and confirm the presence of a strong covalent Th-Th bond inside I_h(7)-C₈₀. Moreover, density functional theory and ab initio multireference calculations suggest that the overlap between the 7s/6d hybrid thorium orbitals is so large that the bond still exists at Th-Th separations larger than 6 Å. This work demonstrates the authenticity of covalent actinide metal-metal bonds in a stable compound and deepens our fundamental understanding of f element metal bonds.

Stabilizing a three-center single-electron metal-metal bond in a fullerene cage

Trimetallic carbide clusterfullerenes (TCCFs) encapsulating a quinary M3C2 cluster represent a special family of endohedral fullerenes with an open-shell electronic configuration. Herein, a novel TCCF based on a medium-sized rare earth metal, dysprosium (Dy), is synthesized for the first time. The molecular structure of Dy3C2@I h(7)-C80 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the encapsulated Dy3C2 cluster adopts a bat ray configuration, in which the acetylide unit C2 is elevated above the Dy3 plane by ∼1.66 Å, while Dy-Dy distances are ∼3.4 Å. DFT computational analysis of the electronic structure reveals that the endohedral cluster has an unusual formal charge distribution of (Dy3)8+(C2)2-@C80 6- and features an unprecedented three-center single-electron Dy-Dy-Dy bond, which has never been reported for lanthanide compounds. Moreover, this electronic structure is different from that of the analogous Sc3C2@I h(7)-C80 with a (Sc3)9+(C2)3-@C80 6- charge distribution and no metal-metal bonding.

Lanthanoid Complexes as Molecular Materials: The Redox Approach

The development of molecular materials with novel functionality offers promise for technological innovation. Switchable molecules that incorporate redox-active components are enticing candidate compounds due to their potential for electronic manipulation. Lanthanoid metals are most prevalent in their trivalent state and usually redox-activity in lanthanoid complexes is restricted to the ligand. The unique electronic and physical properties of lanthanoid ions have been exploited for various applications, including in magnetic and luminescent materials as well as in catalysis. Lanthanoid complexes are also promising for applications reliant on switchability, where the physical properties can be modulated by varying the oxidation state of a coordinated ligand. Lanthanoid-based redox activity is also possible, encompassing both divalent and tetravalent metal oxidation states. Thus, utilization of redox-active lanthanoid metals offers an attractive opportunity to further expand the capabilities of molecular materials. This review surveys both ligand and lanthanoid centered redox-activity in pre-existing molecular systems, including tuning of lanthanoid magnetic and photophysical properties by modulating the redox states of coordinated ligands. Ultimately the combination of redox-activity at both ligands and metal centers in the same molecule can afford novel electronic structures and physical properties, including multiconfigurational electronic states and valence tautomerism. Further targeted exploration of these features is clearly warranted, both to enhance understanding of the underlying fundamental chemistry, and for the generation of a potentially important new class of molecular material.

Strong Equatorial Crystal Field Enhances the Axial Anisotropy and Energy Barrier for Spin Reversal Process in Yb2 Single Molecule Magnets

The importance of equatorial crystal fields on magnetic anisotropy of ytterbium single molecule magnets (SMMs) is observed for the first time. Herein, we report three similar dinuclear ytterbium complexes with the formula [Yb₂ (3-OMe-L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ]⋅DMF (1), [Yb₂ (3-H-L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ]⋅DMF⋅H₂ O (2), and [Yb₂ (3-NO₃ -L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ] (3), [where 3-X-H₂ L=N'-(2-hydroxy-3-X-benzylidene)picolinohydrazide, X=OMe (1), H (2) NO₂ (3)]. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Yb centers and a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization in all complexes. A higher energy barrier for spin reversal was observed for complex 1 (U_eff =50 K) and it decreases in the order of 2 (47 K) to 3 (40 K). Notably, complex 1 shows a remarkable energy barrier within the frequency range of 1-850 Hz reported for Yb-based SMMs. Further, ab initio calculations show a higher axial anisotropy and lower quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in the ground state for 1 compared to 2 and 3. It was also observed that the presence of a strong crystal field in the equatorial plane (when the ∡ O1-Yb-O3 bond angle is close to 90°) enhances the axial anisotropy and improves the SMM behavior in the studied complexes. Both the experimental and theoretical analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that Raman and QTM play major role on slow relaxation process for all complexes. To provide more insight into the exchange interactions, broken-symmetry DFT calculations were performed.

Rotation of fullerene molecules in the crystal lattice of fullerene/porphyrin: C60 and Sc3N@C80

The temperature driven rotation of the encapsulated Sc₃N cluster in a C₈₀ fullerene cage was unraveled by variable temperature X-ray diffraction, which is significantly different from its analogues (Ho₂LuN/Lu₃N).
