Natural Marine Precursors Boost Continental New Particle Formation and Production of Cloud Condensation Nuclei

Marine dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emissions are the dominant source of natural sulfur in the atmosphere. DMS oxidizes to produce low-volatility acids that potentially nucleate to form particles that may grow into climatically important cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). In this work, we utilize the chemistry transport model ADCHEM to demonstrate that DMS emissions are likely to contribute to the majority of CCN during the biological active period (May-August) at three different forest stations in the Nordic countries. DMS increases CCN concentrations by forming nucleation and Aitken mode particles over the ocean and land, which eventually grow into the accumulation mode by condensation of low-volatility organic compounds from continental vegetation. Our findings provide a new understanding of the exchange of marine precursors between the ocean and land, highlighting their influence as one of the dominant sources of CCN particles over the boreal forest.

Indirect Impact of Eutrophication on Occurrence, Air-Water Exchange, and Vertical Sinking Fluxes of Antibiotics in a Subtropical River

A significant challenge that warrants attention is the influence of eutrophication on the biogeochemical cycle of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic environments. Antibiotics pollution in the eutrophic Pearl River in South China was examined to offer new insights into the effects of eutrophication on the occurrence, air-water exchange fluxes (Fair-water), and vertical sinking fluxes (Fsinking) of antibiotics. Antibiotics transferred to the atmosphere primarily through aerosolization controlled by phytoplankton biomass and significant spatiotemporal variations were observed in the Fair-water of individual antibiotics throughout all sites and seasons. The Fsinking of ∑AB14 (defined as a summary of 14 antibiotics) was 750.46 ± 283.19, 242.71 ± 122.87, and 346.74 ± 249.52 ng of m-2 d-1 in spring, summer, and winter seasons. Eutrophication indirectly led to an elevated pH, which reduced seasonal Fair-water of antibiotics, sediment aromaticity, and phytoplankton hydrophobicity, thereby decreasing antibiotic accumulation in sediments and phytoplankton. Negative correlations were further found between Fsinking and the water column daily loss of antibiotics with phytoplankton biomass. The novelty of this study is to provide new complementary knowledge for the regulation mechanisms of antibiotics by phytoplankton biological pump, offering novel perspectives and approaches to understanding the coupling between eutrophication and migration and fate of antibiotics in a subtropical eutrophic river.

Extended ozone depletion and reduced snow and ice cover-Consequences for Antarctic biota

Stratospheric ozone, which has been depleted in recent decades by the release of anthropogenic gases, is critical for shielding the biosphere against ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Although the ozone layer is expected to recover before the end of the 21st century, a hole over Antarctica continues to appear each year. Ozone depletion usually peaks between September and October, when fortunately, most Antarctic terrestrial vegetation and soil biota is frozen, dormant and protected under snow cover. Similarly, much marine life is protected by sea ice cover. The ozone hole used to close before the onset of Antarctic summer, meaning that most biota were not exposed to severe springtime UV-B fluxes. However, in recent years, ozone depletion has persisted into December, which marks the beginning of austral summer. Early summertime ozone depletion is concerning: high incident UV-B radiation coincident with snowmelt and emergence of vegetation will mean biota is more exposed. The start of summer is also peak breeding season for many animals, thus extreme UV-B exposure (UV index up to 14) may come at a vulnerable time in their life cycle. Climate change, including changing wind patterns and strength, and particularly declining sea ice, are likely to compound UV-B exposure of Antarctic organisms, through earlier ice and snowmelt, heatwaves and droughts. Antarctic field research conducted decades ago tended to study UV impacts in isolation and more research that considers multiple climate impacts, and the true magnitude and timing of current UV increases is needed.

Comprehensive observations of carbonyls of Mt. Hua in Central China: Vertical distribution and effects on ozone formation

Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) play important roles in tropospheric chemistry, regulating the oxidation capacity and ozone (O3) formation potential of the atmosphere. However, the evolution of OVOCs composition during vertical transport from the near surface to the upper atmosphere layer and the roles of OVOCs in the alpine atmospheric O3 formation are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the carbonyl compounds, the most important chemical group of OVOCs, and other gaseous pollutants simultaneously collected at the top (2060 m a.s.l, Top) and the foot (402 m a.s.l, Foot) of Mt. Hua in August 2020. The average concentrations of the total quantified carbonyl compounds (∑carbonyls) at the Top and Foot were 16.05 ± 3.69 and 15.32 ± 5.63 ppbv, respectively. Acetone was the most abundant carbonyl (4.19 ± 1.01 ppbv) at the Top, followed by formaldehyde and n-Nonanal, accounting for ∼58.8 % of ∑carbonyls, while formaldehyde (5.40 ± 2.26 ppbv), acetone, and acetaldehyde were the three most abundant species at the Foot, accounting for 64.7 % of ∑carbonyls. The n-Nonanal, acetone and acetaldehyde showed positive correlations between the Top and Foot during daytime, confirming the vertical transport of carbonyls from the foot to the top of Mt. Hua under the influence of valley winds. The direct emissions from vegetation, transport processes of anthropogenic emissions and photochemical oxidation contributed significantly to the measured carbonyls at the Top, especially for acetone. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal, and methylglyoxal were the most important contributors to the O3 generation in Mt. Hua. This study could advance our understanding of the vertical distribution of the carbonyls and the effects on O3 formation in the alpine region of China.

Identifying the key factors affecting the trimethylamine N-oxide content of teleost fishes collected from the marginal seas of China and the epipelagic zone of the northwest Pacific Ocean

To identify the key factors influencing the trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) content of teleost fishes living in shallow seas and the epipelagic zone of the deep ocean, the muscle TMAO content was measured in 152 teleost fishes (21 species) collected from the marginal seas of China and the epipelagic zone of the northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO) during May-July 2021. The results showed that the TMAO content in all fishes varied from 4.99 to 82.97 mmol kg-1, and it varied notably among different species, e.g., the highest average content (72.71 ± 8.22 mmol kg-1 in Argyrosomus argentatus) was 1 order of magnitude higher than the lowest one (Scomber japonicus), but the ratios of the highest content to the lowest content in each species varied from 1.29 to 3.28, suggesting that the interspecific variations in TMAO content were obviously greater than the intraspecific variations. Moreover, no correlation was observed between the TMAO content of the 152 fishes and the corresponding environmental factors of seawater depth, salinity and temperature, indicating that species played a more important role than environmental factors in driving TMAO accumulation. To exclude the influence of species, intraspecies correlations between TMAO content and environmental factors were analyzed. In the marginal seas of China, only ∼8 % of the TMAO content of teleost fishes (1 species) showed a positive correlation with salinity and depth, but ∼50 % of the TMAO content (5 species) was negatively correlated with temperature. Moreover, the TMAO content of the fish increased by 4.66 ± 1.38 % compared with their corresponding intraspecific average values for every 1 °C of temperature decrease. A similar phenomenon was also found in the TMAO content of pelagic teleost fishes in the NWPO, suggesting that temperature was a key environmental factor affecting the TMAO content of teleost fishes in shallow seas and the epipelagic zone of the deep ocean.

Contribution of marine biological emissions to gaseous methylamines in the atmosphere: An emission inventory based on multi-source data sets

Methylamines are a class of highly reactive organic alkaline gases in the atmosphere. At present, the gridded emission inventories of amines used in the atmospheric numerical model is mostly based on the amine/ammonia ratio method and do not consider the air-sea exchange of methylamines, which oversimplifies the emission scenario. Marine biological emissions (MBE), an important source of methylamines, has been insufficiently investigated. These shortcomings in the inventories can limit the simulation of amines by numerical models in the context of compound pollution in China. To acquire a more complete gridded inventory of amines (monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamines (DMA), and trimethylamines (TMA)), we established a more reasonable MBE inventory of amines by using multi-source data sets (Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Chlorophyll-a (Chla), Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), NH3 column concentration (NH3), and Wind Speed (WS)), and merged it with the anthropogenic emissions (AE) inventory (by adopting the amine/ammonia ratio method and the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC)). The new methodology can reveal the air-sea exchange fluxes and direction of different amines. Oceans can act as a sink for DMA and source for TMA while it can be either a source or sink for MMA. The concentration of amines above the coastal area increased significantly when the MBE was merged to the AE inventory. TMA and MMA showed significant increases, TMA increased by 43,917.0 %, and 804.0 %, in July 2015 and December 2019, respectively; while MMA increased by 2635.4 % and 0.37 % during the same periods; however, only slight changes were observed in the DMA concentration (-3.9 % in July 2015, and 1.1 % in December 2019). WS, Chla, and the total dissolved concentration of amines ([C+(s)tot]) were found to be the dominant factors affecting MBE fluxes. In addition, the emission fluxes and spatial distribution of AE, and wet deposition also affect the simulation of amines concentration.

Assessing the Intensity of Marine Biogenic Influence on the Lower Atmosphere: An Insight into the Distribution of Marine Biogenic Aerosols over the Eastern China Seas

Marine biological activities make a non-negligible contribution to atmospheric aerosols, leading to potential impacts on the regional atmospheric environment and climate. The eastern China seas are highly productive with significant emissions of biogenic substances, but the spatiotemporal variations of marine biogenic aerosols are not well known. Air mass exposure to chlorophyll a (AEC) can be used to indicate the influence of biogenic sources on the atmosphere to a certain degree. In this study, the 12 year (2009-2020) daily AEC were calculated over the eastern China seas, showing the spatial and seasonal patterns of marine biogenic influence intensity which were co-controlled by surface phytoplankton biomass and boundary layer height. By combining the AEC values, relevant meteorological parameters, and extensive observations of a typical biogenic secondary aerosol component, methanesulfonate (MSA), a parameterization scheme for MSA simulation was successfully constructed. This AEC-based approach with observation constraints provides a new insight into the distribution of marine biogenic aerosols. Meanwhile, the wintertime air mass retention over land exhibited a significant decrease, showing a decadal weakening trend of terrestrial transport, which is probably related to the weakening of the East Asian winter monsoon. Thus, marine biogenic aerosols may play an increasingly important role in the studied region.

Suppressor and calibration standard limitations in cation chromatography of ammonium and 10 alkylamines in atmospheric samples

Ammonia (NH3) and alkylamines are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and have been suggested to play important global roles through new particle formation and aerosol growth. In this work, we optimized an ion-chromatographic (IC) method to separate and quantify the ten most abundant atmospheric alkylamines with high selectivity and separation efficiency, using 4 μm packed columns and resin-based suppressors, alongside stabilizing amine standards. Modern resin suppressors operating on a gradient elution program affected the linear response of this IC technique. Calibration statistical analyses found a loss of analytes in these cation-exchange devices. Suppressor operational longevity was optimized by using a stepped current and an external water supply, which improved precision, accuracy, and LODs compared to other suppression modes. When this new method was applied to real samples, amines were found ubiquitously in size-resolved marine aerosol samples; monopropylamine, isomonopropylamine, and monobutylamine were detected and quantified, which have not been reported before. The molar ratio of the sum of aminium to ammonium ranged from 0.02 to 0.2, showcasing the application of the developed method towards studying the diversity and importance of alkylamines in coastal marine particle composition. The new analytical method also found NH3 present in a suite of new homes with a mean mixing ratio of 25 ± 15 ppbv; a common level reached between homes across the study during the first year of occupation which can then be transported outdoors.

Assessment of prokaryotic communities in Southwestern Atlantic deep-sea sediments reveals prevalent methanol-oxidising Methylomirabilales

Continental slopes can play a significant contribution to marine productivity and carbon cycling. These regions can harbour distinct geological features, such as salt diapirs and pockmarks, in which their depressions may serve as natural sediment traps where different compounds can accumulate. We investigated the prokaryotic communities in surface (0-2 cm) and subsurface (18-20 or 22-24 cm) sediments from a salt diapir and pockmark field in Santos Basin, Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Metabarcoding of 16 samples revealed that surface sediments were dominated by the archaeal class Nitrososphaeria, while the bacterial class Dehalococcoidia was the most prevalent in subsurface samples. Sediment strata were found to be a significant factor explaining 27% of the variability in community composition. However, no significant difference was observed among geomorphological features. We also performed a metagenomic analysis of three surface samples and analysed the highest quality metagenome-assembled genome retrieved, which belonged to the family CSP1-5, phylum Methylomirabilota. This non-methanotrophic methylotroph contains genes encoding for methanol oxidation and Calvin Cycle pathways, along with diverse functions that may contribute to its adaptation to deep-sea habitats and to oscillating environmental conditions. By integrating metabarcoding and metagenomic approaches, we reported that CSP1-5 is prevalent in the sediment samples from Santos Basin slope, indicating the potential importance of methanol metabolism in this region. Finally, using a phylogenetic approach integrating 16S rRNA sequences assigned to Methylomirabilota in this study with those from a public database, we argued that CSP1-5 public sequences might be misclassified as Methylomirabilaceae (the methanotrophic clade) and, therefore, the role of these organisms and the methanol cycling could also be neglected in other environments.

Characteristics and emissions of isoprene and other non-methane hydrocarbons in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and responses to atmospheric aerosol deposition

Field investigations in the Northwest Pacific Ocean were carried out to determine the distributions of marine and atmospheric non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), sources and environmental effects. We also conducted deck incubation experiments to investigate the effects of atmospheric aerosol deposition on NMHCs production. The marine NMHCs displayed an increasing trend from the South Equatorial Current to the Oyashio Current. The enhanced phytoplankton biomass and dissolved organic materials (DOM) content in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension contributed significantly to isoprene and NMHCs production compared with those in tropical waters and the North Pacific subtropical gyre. The Northwest Pacific Ocean was a significant source of atmospheric NMHCs, with average sea-to-air fluxes of 28.0 ± 38.9, 65.2 ± 73.3, 21.0 ± 26.7, 48.7 ± 62.6, 12.7 ± 15.9, 14.2 ± 16.8, and 41.7 ± 80.4 nmol m^-2 d^-1 for ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, i-butane, n-butane, and isoprene, respectively. Influenced by seawater release and OH radical consumption, the atmospheric NMHCs apart from isoprene displayed upward trends with increasing latitude. The deck incubation showed that the addition of aerosols and acidic aerosols significantly boosted phytoplankton biomass, altered community structure, and accelerated the production of isoprene. However, the other six NMHCs showed no obvious responses to atmospheric aerosol deposition in the incubation experiments. In summary, ocean current movements and atmospheric deposition could influence the production and release of isoprene in the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

Examining the impact of dimethyl sulfide emissions on atmospheric sulfate over the continental U.S

We examine the impact of dimethylsulfide (DMS) emissions on sulfate concentrations over the continental U.S. by using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model version 5.4 and performing annual simulations without and with DMS emissions for 2018. DMS emissions enhance sulfate not only over seawater but also over land, although to a lesser extent. On an annual basis, the inclusion of DMS emissions increase sulfate concentrations by 36% over seawater and 9% over land. The largest impacts over land occur in California, Oregon, Washington, and Florida, where the annual mean sulfate concentrations increase by ~25%. The increase in sulfate causes a decrease in nitrate concentration due to limited ammonia concentration especially over seawater and an increase in ammonium concentration with a net effect of increased inorganic particles. The largest sulfate enhancement occurs near the surface (over seawater) and the enhancement decreases with altitude, diminishing to 10-20% at an altitude of ~5 km. Seasonally, the largest enhancement of sulfate over seawater occurs in summer, and the lowest in winter. In contrast, the largest enhancements over land occur in spring and fall due to higher wind speeds that can transport more sulfate from seawater into land.

The determination of volatile amines in aquatic marine systems: A review

This review provides a critical assessment of knowledge regarding the determination of volatile, low molecular weight amines, and particularly methylamines, in marine aquatic; systems. It provides context for the motivation to determine methylamines in the marine aquatic environment and the analytical challenges associated with their measurement.While sensitive analytical methods have been reported in recent decades, they have not been adopted by the oceanographic community to investigate methylamines' biogeochemistry and advance understanding of these analytes to the degree achieved for other marine volatiles. Gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, ion chromatography and infusion-mass spectrometry techniques are discussed and critically determined, alongside offline and online preconcentration steps. Interest in the marine occurrence and cycling of methylamines has increased within the last 10-15 years, due to their potential role in climate regulation. As such, the need for robust, reproducible methods to elucidate biogeochemical cycles for nitrogen and populate marine models is apparent. Recommendations are made as to what equipment would be most suitable for future research in this area.

Marine biogenic emissions of benzene and toluene and their contribution to secondary organic aerosols over the polar oceans

Reactive trace gas emissions from the polar oceans are poorly characterized, even though their effects on atmospheric chemistry and aerosol formation are crucial for assessing current and preindustrial aerosol forcing on climate. Here, we present seawater and atmospheric measurements of benzene and toluene, two gases typically associated with pollution, in the remote Southern Ocean and the Arctic marginal ice zone. Their distribution suggests a marine biogenic source. Calculated emission fluxes were 0.023 ± 0.030 (benzene) and 0.039 ± 0.036 (toluene) and 0.023 ± 0.028 (benzene) and 0.034 ± 0.041 (toluene) μmol m^-2 day^-1 for the Southern Ocean and the Arctic, respectively. Including these average emissions in a chemistry-climate model increased secondary organic aerosol mass concentrations only by 0.1% over the Arctic but by 7.7% over the Southern Ocean, with transient episodes of up to 77.3%. Climate models should consider the hitherto overlooked emissions of benzene and toluene from the polar oceans.

High Gas-Phase Methanesulfonic Acid Production in the OH-Initiated Oxidation of Dimethyl Sulfide at Low Temperatures

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) influences climate via cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation resulting from its oxidation products (mainly methanesulfonic acid, MSA, and sulfuric acid, H2SO4). Despite their importance, accurate prediction of MSA and H2SO4 from DMS oxidation remains challenging. With comprehensive experiments carried out in the Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at CERN, we show that decreasing the temperature from +25 to -10 °C enhances the gas-phase MSA production by an order of magnitude from OH-initiated DMS oxidation, while H2SO4 production is modestly affected. This leads to a gas-phase H2SO4-to-MSA ratio (H2SO4/MSA) smaller than one at low temperatures, consistent with field observations in polar regions. With an updated DMS oxidation mechanism, we find that methanesulfinic acid, CH3S(O)OH, MSIA, forms large amounts of MSA. Overall, our results reveal that MSA yields are a factor of 2-10 higher than those predicted by the widely used Master Chemical Mechanism (MCMv3.3.1), and the NOx effect is less significant than that of temperature. Our updated mechanism explains the high MSA production rates observed in field observations, especially at low temperatures, thus, substantiating the greater importance of MSA in the natural sulfur cycle and natural CCN formation. Our mechanism will improve the interpretation of present-day and historical gas-phase H2SO4/MSA measurements.

Mechanistic study on photochemical generation of I•/I2•- radicals in coastal atmospheric aqueous aerosol

The reactive iodine species may exhibit significant impacts on many global atmospheric issues and the I^•/I₂^•- radicals play key roles for inducing the formation of these reactive iodine species. However, the current understanding on the formation of I^•/I₂^•- radicals in atmospheric aqueous aerosol is still quite limited. The results reported herein suggest that I^•/I₂^•- can be produced simultaneously in aqueous aerosol by several sunlight-driven photochemical pathways including direct photo-dissociation of soluble organic iodine (SOI) at rates of 0.10-1.34 × 10^-9 M ns^-1 and 0.99-5.68 × 10^-7 M μs^-1, ^•OH-mediated oxidation of I^- at 0.03-1.41 × 10^-8 M ns^-1 and 0.05-4.10 × 10^-6 M μs^-1, and ³DOM^⁎-induced oxidation of I^- at 1.57-1.65 × 10^-9 M ns^-1 and 0.99-5.68 × 10^-7 M μs^-1 for generation of I^• and I₂^•-, respectively. Meanwhile, the pathway of e_aq^--initiated stepwise reduction of IO₃^- to I_2(aq) and further photolyzed into I^• plays negligible role in formation of I^•/I₂^•- due to the low reaction rates and severe quenching effect of e_aq^- by dissolved O₂. Our work presented the new data on mechanism and kinetics for comprehensive elucidation of I^•/I₂^•- formation in coastal atmospheric aqueous aerosol and would help to better understand the transformation mechanism of iodine species, pathways of iodine cycling and the associated environmental impacts involving atmospheric reactive iodine radicals.

Competitive Uptake of Dimethylamine and Trimethylamine against Ammonia on Acidic Particles in Marine Atmospheres

Alkaline gases such as NH₃ and amines play important roles in neutralizing acidic particles in the atmosphere. Here, two common gaseous amines (dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA)), NH₃, and their corresponding ions in PM_2.5 were measured semicontinuously using an ambient ion monitor-ion chromatography (AIM-IC) system in marine air during a round-trip cruise of approximately 4000 km along the coastline of eastern China. The concentrations of particulate DMA, detected as DMAH⁺, varied from <4 to 100 ng m^-3 and generally decreased with increasing atmospheric NH₃ concentrations. Combining observations with thermodynamic equilibrium calculations using the extended aerosol inorganics model (E-AIM) indicated that the competitive uptake of DMA against NH₃ on acidic aerosols generally followed thermodynamic equilibria and appeared to be sensitive to DMA/NH₃ molar ratios, resulting in molar ratios of DMAH⁺ to DMA + DMAH⁺ of 0.31 ± 0.16 (average ± standard deviation) at atmospheric NH₃ concentrations over 1.8 μg m^-3 (with a corresponding DMA/NH₃ ratio of (1.8 ± 1.0) × 10^-3), 0.80 ± 0.15 at atmospheric NH₃ concentrations below 0.3 μg m^-3 (with a corresponding DMA/NH₃ ratio of (1.3 ± 0.6) × 10^-2), and 0.56 ± 0.19 in the remaining cases. Particulate TMA concentrations, detected as TMAH⁺, ranged from <2 to 21 ng m^-3 and decreased with increasing concentrations of atmospheric NH₃. However, TMAH⁺ was depleted concurrently with the formation of NH₄NO₃ under low concentrations of atmospheric NH₃, contradictory to the calculated increase in the equilibrated concentration of TMAH⁺ by the E-AIM.

Characterization of the Trimethylamine N-Oxide Transporter From Pelagibacter Strain HTCC1062 Reveals Its Oligotrophic Niche Adaption

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which was detected at nanomolar concentrations in surface seawaters, is an important carbon, nitrogen and/or energy source for marine bacteria. It can be metabolized by marine bacteria into volatile methylated amines, the second largest source of nitrogen after N2 gas in the oceans. The SAR11 bacteria are the most abundant oligotrophic plankton in the oceans, which represents approximately 30% of the bacterial cells in marine surface waters. Genomic analysis suggested that most SAR11 bacteria possess an ATP-binding cassette transporter TmoXWV that may be responsible for importing TMAO. However, it was still unclear whether SAR11 bacteria can utilize TMAO as the sole nitrogen source and how they import TMAO. Here, our results showed that Pelagibacter strain HTCC1062, a SAR11 bacterium, can grow with TMAO as the sole nitrogen source. TmoXWV from strain HTCC1062 (TmoXWV1062) was verified to be a functional TMAO importer. Furthermore, TmoX1062, the periplasmic substrate binding protein of TmoXWV1062, was shown to have high binding affinities toward TMAO at 4°C (Kd = 920 nM), 10°C (Kd = 500 nM) and 25°C (Kd = 520 nM). The high TMAO binding affinity and strong temperature adaptability of TmoX1062 reveal a possible oligotrophic niche adaptation strategy of strain HTCC1062, which may help it gain a competitive advantage over other bacteria. Structure comparison and mutational analysis indicated that the TMAO binding mechanism of TmoX1062 may have differences from the previously reported mechanism of TmoX of Ruegeria pomeroyi DSS-3. This study provides new insight into TMAO utilization by the widespread SAR11 bacteria.

Effects of natural and anthropogenic emissions on the composition and toxicity of aerosols in the marine atmosphere

The impacts of natural dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and ship emissions on marine environments and particulate matter (PM) over the western and southern sea areas around South Korea were studied based on field campaigns from August-September 2017 and May-June 2018 using the Community Multi-scale Air Quality v5.3.2 modeling system. DMS oxidation enhanced the concentrations of both sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and sulfate (SO₄^2-) in PM_2.5 by 6.2-6.4% and 2.9-3.6%, respectively, in the marine atmosphere during the study period, whereas it slightly decreased nitrate (NO₃^-) concentrations (by -1.3%), compared to the simulation without DMS oxidation chemistry. Furthermore, ship emissions increased the concentrations of SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, and NH₄⁺ by 4.5%, 23%, and 7.3%, respectively. Methane sulfonic acid concentration was 0.17 μg m^-3, suggesting the importance of the addition channel in the DMS oxidation pathway. The model simulation indicated that ship emissions in the target area contributed dominantly to non-sea-salt SO₄^2-, and the marine DMS emission source was non-negligible. The geographical distribution of PM toxicity (aerosol oxidative potential) was assessed in the marine atmosphere during the study period.

Atmospheric Benzothiazoles in a Coastal Marine Environment

Organic emissions from coastal waters play an important but poorly understood role in atmospheric chemistry in coastal regions. A mesocosm experiment focusing on facilitated biological blooms in coastal seawater, SeaSCAPE (Sea Spray Chemistry and Particle Evolution), was performed to study emission of volatile gases, primary sea spray aerosol, and formation of secondary marine aerosol as a function of ocean biological and chemical processes. Here, we report observations of aerosol-phase benzothiazoles in a marine atmospheric context with complementary measurements of dissolved-phase benzothiazoles. Though previously reported dissolved in polluted coastal waters, we report the first direct evidence of the transfer of these molecules from seawater into the atmosphere. We also report the first gas-phase observations of benzothiazole in the environment absent a direct industrial, urban, or rubber-based source. From the identities and temporal dynamics of the dissolved and aerosol species, we conclude that the presence of benzothiazoles in the coastal water (and thereby their emissions into the atmosphere) is primarily attributable to anthropogenic sources. Oxidation experiments to explore the atmospheric fate of gas-phase benzothiazole show that it produces secondary aerosol and gas-phase SO₂, making it a potential contributor to secondary marine aerosol formation in coastal regions and a participant in atmospheric sulfur chemistry.

Cyanobacteria blooms potentially enhance volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from a eutrophic lake: Field and experimental evidence

Eutrophication promotes massive cyanobacteria blooms (CBBs), leading to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To investigate the effects of cyanobacteria on VOC emissions, field campaigns were carried out in eutrophic Chaohu Lake at six sites with different microalgae densities during CBBs in summer 2019, and incubation experiments were performed in the laboratory. The results showed that the lake water was the primary source of VOCs at six sampling sites in Chaohu Lake during CBBs, with an average total VOC flux of 81.2 ± 20.6 μg m^-2 h^-1. Alkanes were the most abundantly emitted VOCs, with a share of 23.1-63.7% of total emitted VOCs, followed by aromatics (16.6-46.3%). The fluxes of total VOCs were significantly greater at sites B and/or C than at site A in July, and at site B' and/or C' than at site A' in August in Chaohu Lake. The fluxes of total VOCs from living and decayed cyanobacteria in the experimental treatments were two orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding values in the control treatments in the laboratory incubation. Taken together, these results suggested that CBBs potentially enhanced VOC emissions from the eutrophic lake, and that cyanobacteria acted as an important source of VOCs. Additionally, non-methane hydrocarbons (i.e., alkanes, alkenes, and aromatics) predominated among the released VOCs during the stabilization and senescence stages, while oxygenated volatile organic compounds (i.e. alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and furans) prevailed during the apoptosis stage and aromatics and volatile organic sulfur compounds predominated during the decomposition stage, suggesting that VOC emissions varied markedly at different life stages.

Dimethyl sulfide mediates microbial predator-prey interactions between zooplankton and algae in the ocean

Phytoplankton are key components of the oceanic carbon and sulfur cycles¹. During bloom events, some species can emit large amounts of the organosulfur volatile dimethyl sulfide (DMS) into the ocean and consequently the atmosphere, where it can modulate aerosol formation and affect climate^2,3. In aquatic environments, DMS plays an important role as a chemical signal mediating diverse trophic interactions. Yet, its role in microbial predator-prey interactions remains elusive with contradicting evidence for its role in either algal chemical defence or in the chemo-attraction of grazers to prey cells^4,5. Here we investigated the signalling role of DMS during zooplankton-algae interactions by genetic and biochemical manipulation of the algal DMS-generating enzyme dimethylsulfoniopropionate lyase (DL) in the bloom-forming alga Emiliania huxleyi⁶. We inhibited DL activity in E. huxleyi cells in vivo using the selective DL-inhibitor 2-bromo-3-(dimethylsulfonio)-propionate⁷ and overexpressed the DL-encoding gene in the model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana. We showed that algal DL activity did not serve as an anti-grazing chemical defence but paradoxically enhanced predation by the grazer Oxyrrhis marina and other microzooplankton and mesozooplankton, including ciliates and copepods. Consumption of algal prey with induced DL activity also promoted O. marina growth. Overall, our results demonstrate that DMS-mediated grazing may be ecologically important and prevalent during prey-predator dynamics in aquatic ecosystems. The role of algal DMS revealed here, acting as an eat-me signal for grazers, raises fundamental questions regarding the retention of its biosynthetic enzyme through the evolution of dominant bloom-forming phytoplankton in the ocean.

Functional Characterization of a L-2-Haloacid Dehalogenase From Zobellia galactanivorans DsijT Suggests a Role in Haloacetic Acid Catabolism and a Wide Distribution in Marine Environments

L-2-halocid dehalogenases (L-2-HADs) have been mainly characterized from terrestrial polluted environments. By contrast, knowledge is still scarce about their role in detoxification of predominant halocarbons in marine environments. Here, phylogenetic analyses showed a wide diversity of homologous L-2-HADs, especially among those belonging to marine bacteria. Previously characterized terrestrial L-2-HADs were part of a monophyletic group (named group A) including proteins of terrestrial and marine origin. Another branch (named group B) contained mostly marine L-2-HADs, with two distinct clades of Bacteroidetes homologs, closely linked to Proteobacteria ones. This study further focused on the characterization of the only L-2-HAD from the flavobacterium Zobellia galactanivorans Dsij^T (ZgHAD), belonging to one of these Group B clades. The recombinant ZgHAD was shown to dehalogenate bromo- and iodoacetic acids, and gene knockout in Z. galactanivorans revealed a direct role of ZgHAD in tolerance against both haloacetic acids. Analyses of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets confirmed that L-2-HADs from group A were well-represented in terrestrial and marine bacteria, whereas ZgHAD homologs (group B L-2-HADs) were mainly present in marine bacteria, and particularly in host-associated species. Our results suggest that ZgHAD homologs could be key enzymes for marine Bacteroidetes, by conferring selective advantage for the recycling of toxic halogen compounds produced in particular marine habitats, and especially during interactions with macroalgae.

Continuous measurements of volatile gases as detection of algae crop health

Algae cultivation in open raceway ponds is considered the most economical method for photosynthetically producing biomass for biofuels, chemical feedstocks, and other high-value products. One of the primary challenges for open ponds is diminished biomass yields due to attack by grazers, competitors, and infectious organisms. Higher-frequency observations are needed for detection of grazer infections, which can rapidly reduce biomass levels. In this study, real-time measurements were performed using chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) to monitor the impact of grazer infections on cyanobacterial cultures. Numerous volatile gases were produced during healthy growth periods from freshwater Synechococcus elongatus Pasteur Culture Collection (PCC) 7942, with 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one serving as a unique metabolic indicator of exponential growth. Following the introduction of a Tetrahymena ciliate grazer, the concentrations of multiple volatile species were observed to change after a latent period as short as 18 h. Nitrogenous gases, including ammonia and pyrroline, were found to be reliable indicators of grazing. Detection of grazing by CIMS showed indicators of infections much sooner than traditional methods, microscopy, and continuous fluorescence, which did not detect changes until 37 to 76 h after CIMS detection. CIMS analysis of gases produced by PCC 7942 further shows a complex temporal array of biomass-dependent volatile gas production, which demonstrates the potential for using volatile gas analysis as a diagnostic for grazer infections. Overall, these results show promise for the use of continuous volatile metabolite monitoring for the detection of grazing in algal monocultures, potentially reducing current grazing-induced biomass losses, which could save hundreds of millions of dollars.

Oceanic emissions of methyl halides and effect of nutrients concentration on their production: A case of the western Pacific Ocean (2°N to 24°N)

Methyl halides are important greenhouse gases responsible for the majority of the ozone layer depletion. This study investigated atmospheric and seawater methyl halides (CH₃Cl, CH₃Br, and CH₃I) in the western Pacific Ocean between 2°N and 24°N. Increases in methyl halides in the atmosphere were likely to have originated from Southeast Asian regions. Elevated CH₃I concentrations in seawater were mainly produced photochemically from dissolved organic carbon. Maximum methyl halide and chlorophyll a levels in the upper water column (0-200 m) were linked to biological activity and downwelling or upwelling caused by cold and warm eddies. Ship-based incubation experiments showed that nutrient supplementation promoted methyl halide emissions. The elevated methyl halide production was associated with increases in phytoplankton such as diatoms. The mean fluxes of CH₃Cl, CH₃Br, and CH₃I in study area of during the cruise were 82.91, 4.70, and 3.50 nmol m^-2 d^-1, respectively. The estimated emissions of CH₃Cl, CH₃Br, and CH₃I in the western Pacific Ocean accounted for 0.67%, 0.79% and 0.09% of global oceanic emissions, respectively, indicating that the open sea contribute insignificantly to the global oceanic emissions of these gases.

Marine volatile organic compounds and their impacts on marine aerosol-A review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a vital role in the global carbon budget and in the regional formation of ozone in the troposphere, and are emitted from both natural and anthropogenic activities. They can also serve as a source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Field and model studies showed evidences of a strong marine biogenic influence on marine aerosols. Although knowledge of terrestrial VOC emissions and SOA formation mechanisms has been advanced considerably over the last decades, processes constraining marine VOC emissions and marine SOA formation remain poorly understood. Seawater contains an extremely complex, diverse, and largely unidentified mixture of VOCs. Despite the fact that the ocean covers 70% of the Earth's surface, the role of the ocean in the global budget of VOCs is still unclear. The distribution and emission of sea surface VOCs exhibit considerable spatial-temporal variation, with higher concentrations often, but not always, correlated with biological activities. VOCs in surface seawater have been measured in various geographic regions, however, knowledge of the distribution of marine VOCs and the role of the oceans in the global atmospheric chemistry is still insufficient due to the paucity of measurements. This study reviews marine VOCs in terms of current analytical methods, global marine VOCs measurements, their effects on SOA, and future needs for understanding the role of marine VOCs in the chemistry of the atmosphere.

Reaction of DMS and HOBr as a Sink for Marine DMS and an Inhibitor of Bromoform Formation

Recently, we suggested that hypobromous acid (HOBr) is a sink for the marine volatile organic sulfur compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS). However, HOBr is also known to react with reactive moieties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as phenolic compounds to form bromoform (CHBr₃) and other brominated compounds. The reaction between HOBr and DMS may thus compete with the reaction between HOBr and DOM. To study this potential competition, kinetic batch and diffusion-reactor experiments with DMS, HOBr, and DOM were performed. Based on the reaction kinetics, we modeled concentrations of DMS, HOBr, and CHBr₃ during typical algal bloom fluxes of DMS and HOBr (10^-13 to 10^-9 M s^-1). For an intermediate to high HOBr flux (≥10^-11 M s^-1) and a DMS flux ≤10^-11 M s^-1, the model shows that the DMS degradation by HOBr was higher than for photochemical oxidation, biological consumption, and sea-air gas exchange combined. For HOBr fluxes ≤10^-11 M s^-1 and a DMS flux of 10^-11 M s^-1, our model shows that CHBr₃ decreases by 86% compared to a lower DMS flux of 10^-12 M s^-1. Therefore, the reaction between HOBr and DMS likely not only presents a sink for DMS but also may lead to suppressed CHBr₃ formation.

Comparative genomics analyses indicate differential methylated amine utilization trait within members of the genus Gemmobacter

Methylated amines are ubiquitous in the environment and play a role in regulating the earth's climate via a set of complex biological and chemical reactions. Microbial degradation of these compounds is thought to be a major sink. Recently we isolated a facultative methylotroph, Gemmobacter sp. LW-1, an isolate from the unique environment Movile Cave, Romania, which is capable of methylated amine utilization as a carbon source. Here, using a comparative genomics approach, we investigate how widespread methylated amine utilization is within members of the bacterial genus Gemmobacter. Seven genomes of different Gemmobacter species isolated from diverse environments, such as activated sludge, fresh water, sulphuric cave waters (Movile Cave) and the marine environment were available from the public repositories and used for the analysis. Our results indicate that methylamine utilization is a distinctive feature of selected members of the genus Gemmobacter, namely G. aquatilis, G. lutimaris, G. sp. HYN0069, G. caeni and G. sp. LW-1 have the genetic potential while others (G. megaterium and G. nectariphilus) have not.

Emissions and potential controls of light alkenes from the marginal seas of China

Marine-derived reactive gases constitute a substantial fraction of volatile organic compounds and directly impact atmospheric chemistry and the global climate. Light alkene emissions from marginal seas are limited, and their contribution to atmospheric concentrations is likely underestimated. We surveyed oceanic emissions of ethylene, propylene, and isoprene, as well as their potential controlling factors in the marginal seas of China during the cruises in 2014-2015. Significant temporal-spatial variations in ethylene, propylene, and isoprene concentrations were observed, with the highest occurring in summer near the coastal regions. Isoprene concentrations were primarily controlled by phytoplankton biomass (i.e., Chl-a) in coastal regions, while the elevated concentrations of ethylene and propylene were attributed to photochemical reactions with the high levels of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Additionally, the vertical distributions of ethylene and propylene mirrored light penetration, with exponential decrease in concentrations with depth. However, there were high values of ethylene and propylene observed at deep chlorophyll maximum, suggesting the existence of non-photochemical production pathways, most likely biological origin. Emissions of ethylene, propylene, and isoprene from the marginal seas of China were estimated to be 0.022, 0.024, and 0.011 Tg C yr^-1, respectively, indicating they are important contributors to global non-methane hydrocarbons. Due to the scarcity of alkene emission data for marginal seas, current global emissions have been underestimated to some extent. It is essential to incorporate the contributions from marginal seas to accurately estimate alkene budgets on global scales.

Crystal structures of γ-glutamylmethylamide synthetase provide insight into bacterial metabolism of oceanic monomethylamine

Monomethylamine (MMA) is an important climate-active oceanic trace gas and ubiquitous in the oceans. γ-Glutamylmethylamide synthetase (GmaS) catalyzes the conversion of MMA to γ-glutamylmethylamide, the first step in MMA metabolism in many marine bacteria. The gmaS gene occurs in ∼23% of microbial genomes in the surface ocean and is a validated biomarker to detect MMA-utilizing bacteria. However, the catalytic mechanism of GmaS has not been studied because of the lack of structural information. Here, the GmaS from Rhodovulum sp. 12E13 (RhGmaS) was characterized, and the crystal structures of apo-RhGmaS and RhGmaS with different ligands in five states were solved. Based on structural and biochemical analyses, the catalytic mechanism of RhGmaS was explained. ATP is first bound in RhGmaS, leading to a conformational change of a flexible loop (Lys287-Ile305), which is essential for the subsequent binding of glutamate. During the catalysis of RhGmaS, the residue Arg312 participates in polarizing the γ-phosphate of ATP and in stabilizing the γ-glutamyl phosphate intermediate; Asp177 is responsible for the deprotonation of MMA, assisting the attack of MMA on γ-glutamyl phosphate to produce a tetrahedral intermediate; and Glu186 acts as a catalytic base to abstract a proton from the tetrahedral intermediate to finally generate glutamylmethylamide. Sequence analysis suggested that the catalytic mechanism of RhGmaS proposed in this study has universal significance in bacteria containing GmaS. Our results provide novel insights into MMA metabolism, contributing to a better understanding of MMA catabolism in global carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Effect of sea ice retreat on marine aerosol emissions in the Southern Ocean, Antarctica

Sea ice retreat in the polar region is expected to increase the emissions of sea salt aerosols and biogenic gases, which may significantly impact the climate by increasing cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) population and changing solar radiation. In this study, aerosol compositions were measured at high-time-resolution (1 h) with an in-situ gas and aerosol composition monitoring system in polynya regions of the Southern Ocean (SO) to access the effects of sea ice concentrations on the sea salt aerosol (SSA) and secondary biogenic aerosol (SBA) in the SO. SSA emissions increased by more than 30% as sea ice concentration decreased from 85% to 29%. However, SSA emissions did not increase monotonically as the sea ice concentration decreased. The highest SSA concentration occurred in drifting sea ice region. Sea ice melting increased SBA concentrations by enhancing the air-sea exchanges of SBA precursor gases and the release of algae from sea ice. Positive correlations between SSA and wind speed were present in different sea ice regions, while SBA didn't reveal an obvious correlation with wind speed in the SO. The impact of wind speed on the SSA emissions were very different, Higher slope value of 41.83 and 35.81 were present in the DSI and SIF region, while the value was only about 16.74 in the SIC region. The results extended the knowledge of the effect of future sea ice retreat on marine aerosol emissions and potential climate changes in the polar region.

CAICE Studies: Insights from a Decade of Ocean-Atmosphere Experiments in the Laboratory

Ocean-atmosphere interactions control the composition of the atmosphere, hydrological cycle, and temperature of our planet and affect human and ecosystem health. Our understanding of the impact of ocean emissions on atmospheric chemistry and climate is limited relative to terrestrial systems, despite the fact that oceans cover the majority (71%) of the Earth. As a result, the impact of marine aerosols on clouds represents one of the largest uncertainties in our understanding of climate, which is limiting our ability to accurately predict the future temperatures of our planet. The emission of gases and particles from the ocean surface constitutes an important chemical link between the ocean and atmosphere and is mediated by marine biological, physical, and chemical processes. It is challenging to isolate the role of biological ocean processes on atmospheric chemistry in the real world, which contains a mixture of terrestrial and anthropogenic emissions. One decade ago, the NSF Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment (CAICE) took a unique ocean-in-the-laboratory approach to study the factors controlling the chemical composition of marine aerosols and their effects on clouds and climate. CAICE studies have demonstrated that the complex interplay of phytoplankton, bacteria, and viruses exerts significant control over sea spray aerosol composition and the production of volatile organic compounds. In addition, CAICE experiments have explored the physical production mechanisms and their impact on the properties of marine cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles, thus shedding light on connections between the oceans and cloud formation. As these ocean-in-the-laboratory experiments become more sophisticated, they allow for further exploration of the complexity of the processes that control atmospheric emissions from the ocean, as well as incorporating the effects of atmospheric aging and secondary oxidation processes. In the face of unprecedented global climate change, these results provide key insights into how our oceans and atmosphere are responding to human-induced changes to our planet.This Account presents results from a decade of research by chemists in the NSF Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment. The mission of CAICE involves taking a multidisciplinary approach to transform the ability to accurately predict the impact of marine aerosols on our environment by bringing the full real-world chemical complexity of the ocean and atmosphere into the laboratory. Toward this end, CAICE has successfully advanced the study of the ocean-atmosphere system under controlled laboratory settings through the stepwise simulation of physical production mechanisms and incorporation of marine microorganisms, building to systems that replicate real-world chemical complexity. This powerful approach has already made substantial progress in advancing our understanding of how ocean biology and physical processes affect the composition of nascent sea spray aerosol (SSA), as well as yielded insights that help explain longstanding discrepancies in field observations in the marine environment. CAICE research is now using laboratory studies to assess how real-world complexity, such as warming temperatures, ocean acidification, wind speed, biology, and anthropogenic perturbations, impacts the evolution of sea spray aerosol properties, as well as shapes the composition of the marine atmosphere.

Distribution and Drivers of Marine Isoprene Concentration across the Southern Ocean

Isoprene is a biogenic trace gas produced by terrestrial vegetation and marine phytoplankton. In the remote oceans, where secondary aerosols are mostly biogenic, marine isoprene emissions affect atmospheric chemistry and influence cloud formation and brightness. Here, we present the first compilation of new and published measurements of isoprene concentrations in the Southern Ocean and explore their distribution patterns. Surface ocean isoprene concentrations in November through April span 1 to 94 pM. A band of higher concentrations is observed around a latitude of ≈40 ∘ S and a surface sea temperature of 15 ∘ C. High isoprene also occurs in high productivity waters near islands and continental coasts. We use concurrent measurements of physical, chemical, and biological variables to explore the main potential drivers of isoprene concentration by means of paired regressions and multivariate analysis. Isoprene is best explained by phytoplankton-related variables like the concentrations of chlorophyll-a, photoprotective pigments and particulate organic matter, photosynthetic efficiency (influenced by iron availability), and the chlorophyll-a shares of most phytoplankton groups, and not by macronutrients or bacterial abundance. A simple statistical model based on chlorophyll-a concentration and a sea surface temperature discontinuity accounts for half of the variance of isoprene concentrations in surface waters of the Southern Ocean.

Reactive VOC Production from Photochemical and Heterogeneous Reactions Occurring at the Air-Ocean Interface

The ocean surface serves as a source and sink for a diverse set of reactive trace gases in the atmosphere, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), reactive halogens, and oxidized and reduced nitrogen compounds. The exchange of reactive trace gases between the atmosphere and ocean has been shown to alter atmospheric oxidant concentrations and drive particle nucleation and growth. Uncertainties in cloud radiative forcing and aerosol-cloud interactions are among the largest uncertainties in current global climate models. Climate models are particularly sensitive to cloud cover over the remote ocean due to large changes in albedo between the ocean surface and cloud tops. Oceanic emissions contribute to cloud condensation nuclei concentrations, either through the direct emission of particles during wave breaking or through the formation of secondary aerosol particles following the emission of reactive gas-phase compounds. Despite generally small and diffuse oceanic emission rates for reactive trace gases, it has been shown that oxidant and particle number concentrations are acutely sensitive to air-sea trace gas exchange rates and the chemical composition of emitted species. To date, field measurements of air-sea reactive gas exchange have focused primarily on the emission of gases of biological origin, such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS). While DMS emissions are relatively well constrained, the gas-phase oxidation that connects DMS to sulfate aerosol is less well understood. Recent laboratory measurements suggest that heterogeneous and photochemical reactions occurring at the air-sea interface can also lead to the production and emission of a wide array of reactive VOC. When laboratory-based measurements are used to derive global scale emissions, the calculated sea-to-air fluxes of reactive VOC generated from heterogeneous and photochemical processes are comparable or larger in magnitude to the sea-to-air flux of DMS. It is not yet clear how the mechanisms proposed in these laboratory experiments translate to atmospheric conditions. The proposed abiotic emissions are also a potential source of VOC in regions of low biological activity, which carries important implications for regional and global modeling.This Account reviews recent laboratory and field experiments of biotic and abiotic ocean VOC emissions, with a specific focus on exploring open questions related to proposed abiotic reactive VOC emissions and the impact of including a large, abiotic VOC emission source on atmospheric oxidants and aerosol particles. To date, abiotic emissions are not typically included in global chemical transport models. The proposed abiotic emissions mechanisms discussed here have the potential to drive significant changes to current understanding of chemistry in the marine atmosphere if present at the magnitudes suggested by laboratory studies. In order to validate their proposed significance, a coordinated set of laboratory, field, and modeling studies under ocean-relevant conditions are necessary.

The impacts of ocean acidification on marine trace gases and the implications for atmospheric chemistry and climate

Surface ocean biogeochemistry and photochemistry regulate ocean-atmosphere fluxes of trace gases critical for Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate. The oceanic processes governing these fluxes are often sensitive to the changes in ocean pH (or pCO2) accompanying ocean acidification (OA), with potential for future climate feedbacks. Here, we review current understanding (from observational, experimental and model studies) on the impact of OA on marine sources of key climate-active trace gases, including dimethyl sulfide (DMS), nitrous oxide (N2O), ammonia and halocarbons. We focus on DMS, for which available information is considerably greater than for other trace gases. We highlight OA-sensitive regions such as polar oceans and upwelling systems, and discuss the combined effect of multiple climate stressors (ocean warming and deoxygenation) on trace gas fluxes. To unravel the biological mechanisms responsible for trace gas production, and to detect adaptation, we propose combining process rate measurements of trace gases with longer term experiments using both model organisms in the laboratory and natural planktonic communities in the field. Future ocean observations of trace gases should be routinely accompanied by measurements of two components of the carbonate system to improve our understanding of how in situ carbonate chemistry influences trace gas production. Together, this will lead to improvements in current process model capabilities and more reliable predictions of future global marine trace gas fluxes.

Natural and anthropogenic sources of bromoform and dibromomethane in the oceanographic and biogeochemical regime of the subtropical North East Atlantic

The organic bromine compounds bromoform (CHBr₃) and dibromomethane (CH₂Br₂) influence tropospheric chemistry and stratospheric ozone depletion. Their atmospheric abundance is generally related to a common marine source, which is not well characterized. A cruise between the three Macaroenesian Archipelagos of Cape Verde, the Canaries and Madeira revealed that anthropogenic sources increased oceanic CHBr₃ emissions significantly close to some islands, especially at the Canaries, while heterotrophic processes in the ocean increased the flux of CH₂Br₂ from the sea to the atmosphere in the Cape Verde region. As anthropogenic disinfection processes, which release CHBr₃ in coastal areas increase, and as more CH₂Br₂ may be produced from increased heterotrophy in a warming, deoxygenated ocean, both sources could supply higher fractions of stratospheric bromine in the future, with yet unknown consequences for stratospheric ozone.

Spatial distributions and sea-to-air fluxes of non-methane hydrocarbons in the atmosphere and seawater of the Western Pacific Ocean

During an oceanographic campaign in the western Pacific Ocean from 12 August to 3 October 2014, the concentrations of five non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were measured in marine atmosphere and seawater. The average mixing ratios of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and isoprene were 1.109 ± 0.359, 0.658 ± 0.137, 0.711 ± 0.377, 0.429 ± 0.139, and 0.255 ± 0.201 ppbv, respectively. In general, atmospheric concentrations of ethane and propane showed significant decrease from the inshore area to the open ocean, while ethylene and propylene exhibited decreasing trends from low latitudes to high latitudes. The results suggested that atmospheric ethane and propane with long lifetimes were more likely influenced by the air mass transported from continent, while ethylene, propylene and isoprene with short lifetimes were mainly derived from the surface seawater. The average concentrations of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, and isoprene in the surface seawater were 6.6 ± 5.8, 51.9 ± 23.5, 15.4 ± 4.3, 17.2 ± 3.8, and 23.5 ± 8.6 pmol L^-1, respectively. A significant positive correlation was observed between ethane and propane (R² = 0.45, n = 39, p < 0.001), implying that their production and removal pathways in the surface seawater were similar. High concentrations of isoprene were observed in the waters with high Chl-a values, suggesting that the biological process was a controlling factor. The estimated sea-to-air fluxes of ethane, propane, ethylene, propylene, and isoprene were in the range of 0.1-24.9, 4.2-235, 1.0-43.8, 1.5-90.2, and 2.1-149 nmol m^-2 d^-1, respectively. This study is of great importance to the contribution to the atmospheric NMHCs from the western Pacific Ocean and provides data supporting for global NMHCs emission estimates.

On the sources and sinks of atmospheric VOCs: an integrated analysis of recent aircraft campaigns over North America

We apply a high-resolution chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem CTM) with updated treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and a comprehensive suite of airborne datasets over North America to (i) characterize the VOC budget and (ii) test the ability of current models to capture the distribution and reactivity of atmospheric VOCs over this region. Biogenic emissions dominate the North American VOC budget in the model, accounting for 70 % and 95 % of annually emitted VOC carbon and reactivity, respectively. Based on current inventories anthropogenic emissions have declined to the point where biogenic emissions are the dominant summertime source of VOC reactivity even in most major North American cities. Methane oxidation is a 2x larger source of nonmethane VOCs (via production of formaldehyde and methyl hydroperoxide) over North America in the model than are anthropogenic emissions. However, anthropogenic VOCs account for over half of the ambient VOC loading over the majority of the region owing to their longer aggregate lifetime. Fires can be a significant VOC source episodically but are small on average. In the planetary boundary layer (PBL), the model exhibits skill in capturing observed variability in total VOC abundance (R 2 = 0:36) and reactivity (R 2 = 0:54). The same is not true in the free troposphere (FT), where skill is low and there is a persistent low model bias (~ 60 %), with most (27 of 34) model VOCs underestimated by more than a factor of 2. A comparison of PBL: FT concentration ratios over the southeastern US points to a misrepresentation of PBL ventilation as a contributor to these model FT biases. We also find that a relatively small number of VOCs (acetone, methanol, ethane, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, isoprene C oxidation products, methyl hydroperoxide) drive a large fraction of total ambient VOC reactivity and associated model biases; research to improve understanding of their budgets is thus warranted. A source tracer analysis suggests a current overestimate of biogenic sources for hydroxyacetone, methyl ethyl ketone and glyoxal, an underestimate of biogenic formic acid sources, and an underestimate of peroxyacetic acid production across biogenic and anthropogenic precursors. Future work to improve model representations of vertical transport and to address the VOC biases discussed are needed to advance predictions of ozone and SOA formation.

Iodide Accelerates the Processing of Biogenic Monoterpene Emissions on Marine Aerosols

Marine photosynthetic organisms emit organic gases, including the polyolefins isoprene (C₅H₈) and monoterpenes (MTPs, C₁₀H₁₆), into the boundary layer. Their atmospheric processing produces particles that influence cloud formation and growth and, as a result, the Earth's radiation balance. Here, we report that the heterogeneous ozonolysis of dissolved α-pinene by O₃(g) on aqueous surfaces is dramatically accelerated by I^-, an anion enriched in the ocean upper microlayer and sea spray aerosols (SSAs). In our experiments, liquid microjets of α-pinene solutions, with and without added I^-, are dosed with O₃(g) for τ < 10 μs and analyzed online by pneumatic ionization mass spectrometry. In the absence of I^-, α-pinene does not detectably react with O₃(g) under present conditions. In the presence of ≥ 0.01 mM I^-, in contrast, new signals appear at m/z = 169 (C₉H₁₃O₃ ^-), m/z = 183 (C₁₀H₁₅O₃ ^-), m/z = 199 (C₁₀H₁₅O₄ ^-), m/z = 311 (C₁₀H₁₆IO₃ ^-), and m/z = 461 (C₂₀H₃₀IO₄ ^-), plus m/z = 175 (IO₃ ^-), and m/z = 381 (I₃ ^-). Collisional fragmentation splits CO₂ from C₉H₁₃O₃ ^-, C₁₀H₁₅O₃ ^- and C₁₀H₁₅O₄ ^-, and I^- plus IO^- from C₁₀H₁₆IO₃ ^- as expected from a trioxide IOOO^•C₁₀H₁₆ ^- structure. We infer that the oxidative processing of α-pinene on aqueous surfaces is significantly accelerated by I^- via the formation of IOOO^- intermediates that are more reactive than O₃. A mechanism in which IOOO^- reacts with α-pinene (and likely with other unsaturated species) in competition with its isomerization to IO₃ ^- accounts for present results and the fact that soluble iodine in SSA is mostly present as iodine-containing organic species rather than the thermodynamically more stable iodate. By this process, a significant fraction of biogenic MTPs and other unsaturated gases may be converted to water-soluble species rather than emitted to the atmosphere.

Marine versus Continental Sources of Iodine and Selenium in Rainfall at Two European High-Altitude Locations

The essential elements selenium (Se) and iodine (I) are often present in low levels in terrestrial diets, leading to potential deficiencies. Marine I and Se emissions and subsequent atmospheric wet deposition has been suggested to be an important source of I and Se to soils and terrestrial food chains. However, the contribution of recycled moisture of continental origin to I and Se to precipitation has never been analyzed. Here we report concentrations and speciation of I and Se, as well as of bromine (Br), sulfur (S), and DOC-δ¹³C signatures for weekly collected precipitation samples (in the period of April 2015 to September 2016) at two high altitude sites, i.e., Jungfraujoch (JFJ; Switzerland) and Pic du Midi (PDM; France). Analysis of precipitation chemistry and moisture sources indicate combined marine and continental sources of precipitation and Se, I, Br, and S at both sites. At JFJ, concentrations of I and Se were highest when continental moisture sources were dominant, indicating important terrestrial sources for these elements. Furthermore, correlations between investigated elements and DOC-δ¹³C, particularly when continental moisture source contributions were high, indicate a link between these elements and the source of dissolved organic matter, especially for I (JFJ and PDM) and Se (JFJ).

Microbial trimethylamine metabolism in marine environments

Trimethylamine (TMA) is common in marine environments. Although the presence of this compound in the oceans has been known for a long time, unlike the mammalian gastrointestinal tract, where TMA metabolism by microorganisms has been studied intensely, many questions remain unanswered about the microbial metabolism of marine TMA. This minireview summarizes what is currently known about the sources and fate of TMA in marine environments and the different pathways and enzymes involved in TMA metabolism in marine bacteria. This review also raises several questions about microbial TMA metabolism in the marine environments and proposes potential directions for future studies.

Assembly pathway of a bacterial complex iron sulfur molybdoenzyme

Protein folding and assembly into macromolecule complexes within the living cell are complex processes requiring intimate coordination. The biogenesis of complex iron sulfur molybdoenzymes (CISM) requires use of a system specific chaperone - a redox enzyme maturation protein (REMP) - to help mediate final folding and assembly. The CISM dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) reductase is a bacterial oxidoreductase that utilizes DMSO as a final electron acceptor for anaerobic respiration. The REMP DmsD strongly interacts with DMSO reductase to facilitate folding, cofactor-insertion, subunit assembly and targeting of the multi-subunit enzyme prior to membrane translocation and final assembly and maturation into a bioenergetic catalytic unit. In this article, we discuss the biogenesis of DMSO reductase as an example of the participant network for bacterial CISM maturation pathways.

Shared function and moonlighting proteins in molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis

The biosynthesis of the molybdenum cofactor (Moco) is a highly conserved pathway in bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. The molybdenum atom in Moco-containing enzymes is coordinated to the dithiolene group of a tricyclic pyranopterin monophosphate cofactor. The biosynthesis of Moco can be divided into three conserved steps, with a fourth present only in bacteria and archaea: (1) formation of cyclic pyranopterin monophosphate, (2) formation of molybdopterin (MPT), (3) insertion of molybdenum into MPT to form Mo-MPT, and (4) additional modification of Mo-MPT in bacteria with the attachment of a GMP or CMP nucleotide, forming the dinucleotide variants of Moco. While the proteins involved in the catalytic reaction of each step of Moco biosynthesis are highly conserved among the Phyla, a surprising link to other cellular pathways has been identified by recent discoveries. In particular, the pathways for FeS cluster assembly and thio-modifications of tRNA are connected to Moco biosynthesis by sharing the same protein components. Further, proteins involved in Moco biosynthesis are not only shared with other pathways, but additionally have moonlighting roles. This review gives an overview of Moco biosynthesis in bacteria and humans and highlights the shared function and moonlighting roles of the participating proteins.

Antarctic sea ice region as a source of biogenic organic nitrogen in aerosols

Climate warming affects the development and distribution of sea ice, but at present the evidence of polar ecosystem feedbacks on climate through changes in the atmosphere is sparse. By means of synergistic atmospheric and oceanic measurements in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, we present evidence that the microbiota of sea ice and sea ice-influenced ocean are a previously unknown significant source of atmospheric organic nitrogen, including low molecular weight alkyl-amines. Given the keystone role of nitrogen compounds in aerosol formation, growth and neutralization, our findings call for greater chemical and source diversity in the modelling efforts linking the marine ecosystem to aerosol-mediated climate effects in the Southern Ocean.

Ecological Energetic Perspectives on Responses of Nitrogen-Transforming Chemolithoautotrophic Microbiota to Changes in the Marine Environment

Transformation and mobilization of bioessential elements in the biosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere constitute the Earth’s biogeochemical cycles, which are driven mainly by microorganisms through their energy and material metabolic processes. Without microbial energy harvesting from sources of light and inorganic chemical bonds for autotrophic fixation of inorganic carbon, there would not be sustainable ecosystems in the vast ocean. Although ecological energetics (eco-energetics) has been emphasized as a core aspect of ecosystem analyses and microorganisms largely control the flow of matter and energy in marine ecosystems, marine microbial communities are rarely studied from the eco-energetic perspective. The diverse bioenergetic pathways and eco-energetic strategies of the microorganisms are essentially the outcome of biosphere-geosphere interactions over evolutionary times. The biogeochemical cycles are intimately interconnected with energy fluxes across the biosphere and the capacity of the ocean to fix inorganic carbon is generally constrained by the availability of nutrients and energy. The understanding of how microbial eco-energetic processes influence the structure and function of marine ecosystems and how they interact with the changing environment is thus fundamental to a mechanistic and predictive understanding of the marine carbon and nitrogen cycles and the trends in global change. By using major groups of chemolithoautotrophic microorganisms that participate in the marine nitrogen cycle as examples, this article examines their eco-energetic strategies, contributions to carbon cycling, and putative responses to and impacts on the various global change processes associated with global warming, ocean acidification, eutrophication, deoxygenation, and pollution. We conclude that knowledge gaps remain despite decades of tremendous research efforts. The advent of new techniques may bring the dawn to scientific breakthroughs that necessitate the multidisciplinary combination of eco-energetic, biogeochemical and “omics” studies in this field.
