Greener healing: sustainable nanotechnology for advanced wound care

Wound healing involves a carefully regulated sequence of events, encompassing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory stages, tissue regeneration, and remodeling. However, in individuals with diabetes, this process gets disrupted due to dysregulation caused by elevated glucose levels and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream. Consequently, the pro-inflammatory stage is prolonged, while the anti-inflammatory phase is delayed, leading to impaired tissue regeneration and remodeling with extended healing time. Furthermore, the increased glucose levels in open wounds create an environment conducive to microbial growth and tissue sepsis, which can escalate to the point of limb amputation. Managing diabetic wounds requires meticulous care and monitoring due to the lack of widely available preventative and therapeutic measures. Existing clinical interventions have limitations, such as slow recovery rates, high costs, and inefficient drug delivery methods. Therefore, exploring alternative avenues to develop effective wound-healing treatments is essential. Nature offers a vast array of resources in the form of secondary metabolites, notably polyphenols, known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, glucose-regulating, and cell growth-promoting properties. Additionally, nanoparticles synthesized through environmentally friendly methods hold promise for wound healing applications in diabetic and non-diabetic conditions. This review provides a comprehensive discussion and summary of the potential wound-healing abilities of specific natural polyphenols and their nanoparticles. It explores the mechanisms of action underlying their efficacy and presents effective formulations for promoting wound-healing activity.

A simple and effective method for smartphone-based detection of polyamines in oral cancer

Oral cancer accounts for 50%-70% of all cancer-related deaths in India and ranks sixth among the most frequent cancers globally. Roughly 90% of oral malignancies are histologically arise from squamous cells and are therefore called oral squamous cell carcinoma. Organic polycations known as biogenic polyamines, for example, putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm), are vital for cell proliferation, including gene expression control, regulation of endonuclease-mediated fragmentation of DNA, and DNA damage inhibition. Higher Spm and Spd levels have been identified as cancer biomarkers for detecting tumour development in various cancers. The current study utilises tannic acid, a polyphenolic compound, as a reducing and capping agent to fabricate AuNPs via a one-step microwave-assisted synthesis. The fabricated TA@AuNPs were utilised as a nanoprobe for colourimetric sensing of polyamines in PBS. When TA@AuNPs are added to the polyamine, the amine groups in polyamines interact with the phenolic groups of TA@AuNPs via hydrogen bonding or electrostatic interactions. These interactions cause the aggregation of TA@AuNPs, resulting in a red shift of the Surface Plasmon Resonance band of TA@AuNPs from 530 nm to 560 nm. The nanoprobe was found to be highly specific for Spm at low concentrations. TA@AuNPs were able to detect Spm successfully in artificial saliva samples. On recording the RGB values of the sensing process using a smartphone app, it was found that as the nanoparticles aggregated due to the presence of Spm, the intensity of theR-value decreased, indicating the aggregation of TA@AuNPs due to interaction with the polyamine.

Calotropis procera and the Pharmacological Properties of Its Aqueous Leaf Extract: A Review

Calotropis procera (C. procera) is a versatile plant often used for fuel, fodder, wood, fiber, phytoremediation, medicine, and synthesis of nanoparticles. Its ability to tolerate abiotic stresses and its morphophysiological adaptation have made it popular worldwide. Currently, it is identified as an environmental weed across the world. C. procera owes its therapeutic qualities to the secondary metabolites like tannins, alkaloids, and phenols present in it. New synthetic drugs are being formulated by using these secondary metabolites as a prototype. This review aimed to provide a summary of the chemometric profile, toxicity, and pharmacological activities of the aqueous leaf extract of C. procera based on the current literature.

Biosynthesis and Multifaceted Characterization of Breynia nivosa-Derived Silver Nanoparticles: An Eco-Friendly Approach for Biomedical Applications

This study presents an environmentally friendly synthesis of stable silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using the methanolic extract of Breynia nivosa. Initial phytochemical analysis of the extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and tannins. Further characterization through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses identified a diverse array of bioactive compounds, including hydroquinone, stearic acid, neophytadiene, 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z), methyl ester, and others. The addition of B. nivosa methanolic extract to an AgNO3 solution resulted in a color change, confirming the green synthesis of Ag-NPs through the reduction of AgNO3, as made evident by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis provided valuable insights into the crystal structure, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis visualized the predominantly spherical shape of the Ag-NPs. However, the zeta (ζ)-potential and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses confirmed the stability and nanoscale dimensions of the synthesized Ag-NPs. Meanwhile, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra exhibited peaks indicative of various functional groups, including carboxylic acids, phenols, alkanes, and isocyanates. These functional groups played a crucial role in both the reduction and capping processes of the Ag-NPs. The study further explored the antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, and α-amylase inhibition activities of the Ag-NPs of the B. nivosa extract, demonstrating their potential for biomedical and therapeutic applications. In conclusion, this environmentally sustainable synthesis of Ag-NPs from the B. nivosa extract, enriched with bioactive secondary metabolites detected through HPLC and GC-MS analysis, holds promise for diverse applications in the burgeoning field of green nanotechnology.

Impedance nanobiosensor based on enzyme-conjugated biosynthesized gold nanoparticles for the detection of Gram-positive bacteria

In this report, gold nanoparticles (GNPS) were synthesized using cell-free extracts of seven different isolates, namely, Pseudomonas aerogenosa CEBP2, Pseudomonas sp. CEBP1, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CEB1G, Acinetobactor baumani CEBS1, Cuprividus sp. CEB3, Micrococcus luteus CUB12, and Pandoraea sp. CUB2S. The spectroscopic (UV-vis, FTIR, DLS, XRD, EDS) and microscopic (FESEM, TEM) results confirm the reduction of Au3+ to Au0 in the presence of biomolecules having reducing as well as self-stabilizing activity. In this green synthesis approach, the average particle size of biosynthesized GNPS might vary (4-60 nm) depending on the bacterial species, pH of the media, incubation time, and temperature. In this study, GSH-modified BSGNPs (Au-GSH) have shown antimicrobial activity with better stability against Gram-positive bacteria. After conjugation of lysozyme with Au-GSH (lyso@Au-GSH), the zone of inhibition was enhanced from 12 to 23 mm (Au-GSH). The TEM study shows the spherical GNP (16.65 ± 2.84) turns into a flower-shaped GNP (22.22 ± 3.12) after conjugation with lysozyme due to the formation of the protein corona. Furthermore, the nanobioconjugate (lyso@Au-GSH) was immobilized with Nafion on a glassy carbon electrode to fabricate a label-free impedance biosensor that is highly sensitive to monitor changes in the transducer surface due to biomolecular interactions. The uniquely designed biosensor could selectively detect Gram-positive bacteria in the linear range of 3.0 × 101-3 × 1010 cfu mL-1 with RE <5%. The proposed simplest biosensor exhibited good reproducibility (RSD = 3.1%) and excellent correlation (R2 = 0.999) with the standard plate count method, making it suitable for monitoring Gram-positive bacterial contamination in biofluids, food, and environmental samples.

Biosynthesis, Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Gold Nanoparticles with Cucurbita moschata Duchesne Ex Poiret Peel Aqueous Extracts

In this study, AuNPs were biosynthesized from Cucurbita moschata fruit peel extracts. Biosynthesized AuNPs exhibited maximum absorbance at a 555 nm wavelength, and XRD analysis indicated that the CM-AuNPs had a particle size of less than 100 nm and a cubic crystal structure. TEM scans revealed that the gold particles exhibited a spherical morphology, with an average size of 18.10 nm. FTIR analysis revealed strong peaks indicating the presence of functional groups involved in the reduction reactions. The surface charge of the biosynthesized AuNPs was determined to be -19.7 mV. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of AuNPs against pathogen strains were assessed by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. The cytotoxic effects of CM-AuNPs on cancer cell lines (Sk-Ov-3, CaCo2, and A549) and healthy cell lines (HUVEC) were investigated using the MTT method. The findings indicated that AuNPs biosynthesized by the green synthesis method using C. moschata peel aqueous extract had high inhibition on the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and effective cytotoxic activity against cancerous cell lines at low doses. As a result, it can be concluded that CM-AuNPs will be eminently effective in the production of antibacterial and/or anticancer drugs in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries.

Antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of selenium-chitosan-loaded salicylic acid nanoparticles for the removal of emerging contaminants from bacterial pathogens

In this study salicylic acid loaded containing selenium nanoparticles was synthesized and called SA@CS-Se NPs. the chitosan was used as a natural stabilizer during the synthesis process. Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to describe the physicochemical characteristics of the SA@CS-Se NPs. The PXRD examination revealed that the grain size was around 31.9 nm. TEM and FESEM techniques showed the spherical shape of SA@CS-Se NPs. Additionally, the analysis of experiments showed that SA@CS-Se NPs have antibacterial properties against 4 ATCC bacteria; So that with concentrations of 75, 125, 150, and 100 µg/ml, it inhibited the biofilm formation of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. Also, at the concentration of 300 µg/ml, it removed 22.76, 23.2, 10.62, and 18.08% biofilm caused by E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. subtilis, and S. aureus respectively. The synthesized SA@CS-Se NPs may find an application to reduce the unsafe influence of pathogenic microbes and, hence, eliminate microbial contamination.

Treatment of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans polymicrobial biofilms by phloroglucinol-gold nanoparticles

The co-isolation of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans from host tissues and organs and their in vitro and in vivo interaction studies suggest a synergistic relationship in forming polymicrobial biofilms. In particular, during polymicrobial biofilm formation, S. aureus becomes coated in the extracellular matrix secreted by C. albicans, leading to enhanced resistance to antibiotics. Accordingly, understanding the interactions between S. aureus and C. albicans in polymicrobial biofilms is of utmost importance in establishing treatment strategies for polymicrobial infections. As an alternate technique, nanoparticles were used in this investigation to suppress polymicrobial biofilm. The current study aims to manufacture gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using phloroglucinol (PG), a natural chemical, and test their inhibitory capabilities against S. aureus and C. albicans biofilms in standard and host-mimicking media (like saliva and sputum). PG-AuNPs have a spherical form with an average size of 46.71 ± 6.40 nm. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values differed when PG-AuNPs were evaluated in the standard and host-mimicking artificial media. The MIC of PG-AuNPs against S. aureus and C. albicans was 2048 μg/mL in both the standard and artificial sputum media. However, the MIC in saliva was only 128 μg/mL. The initial stage polymicrobial biofilm of S. aureus and C. albicans was dramatically decreased at the sub-MIC of PG-AuNPs in both standard and host-mimicking media. S. aureus and C. albicans mature polymicrobial biofilms were more effectively eliminated by MIC and sub-MIC of PG-AuNPs. This study indicates that PG-AuNPs have the ability to limit the formation of polymicrobial biofilms caused by bacterial and fungal diseases.

Loading of green-synthesized cu nanoparticles on Ag complex containing 1,3,5-triazine Schiff base with enhanced antimicrobial activities

The physicochemical properties of materials change significantly in nanometer dimensions. Therefore, several methods have been proposed for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Plant extracts and essential oils are applied as natural and economic resources to prepare nanomaterials especially metal nanoparticles. In this project, a green, simple and efficient method has been designed for the synthesis of Cu nanoparticles using Purple cabbage extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent. They were successfully loaded onto a new Ag complex containing 1,3,5-triazine Schiff base as ligand to form Cu@Ag-CPX nanocomposite. Phytochemical contents of extract were identified by standard qualitative analyses. The chemical structure of all synthesized compounds was characterized using spectral data. In FT-IR, coordination of C=N bond of Schiff base ligand to Ag+ ions shifted the absorption band from 1641 to 1632 cm-1. The UV-Vis spectrum of Cu@Ag-CPX nanocomposite shown the peak related to Cu nanoparticles in the region of around 251 nm. 5:7 molar ratio of Cu to Ag in Cu@Ag-CPX was determined using ICP-OES. The FESEM, TEM, and DLS techniques provided valuable insights into the morphology and size distribution of the nanocomposite, revealing the presence of rods and monodispersed particles with specific diameter ranges. These analyses of the nanocomposite displayed rods with diameters from 40 to 62 nm as well as monodispersed and uniform particles with average diameter of 45 nm, respectively. The presence of elements including carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, Cu and Ag was proved by EDX-EDS analysis. The XRD pattern of Cu@Ag-CPX shown the diffraction peaks of Cu and Ag particles at 2θ values of 10°-80°, and confirmed its crystalline nature. The inhibitory properties of the synthesized compounds were evaluated in vitro against four Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria, as well as two fungal strains. The MIC, MBC and MFC values obtained from microdilution and streak plate sensitivity tests were ranged from 128 to 4096 µg ml-1. While Cu nanoparticles and Ag complexes were effective against some pathogens, they were not effective against all them. However, the growth of all tested microbial strains was inhibited by Cu@Ag-CPX nanocomposite, and makes it as a new promising antimicrobial agent. Modification of nanocomposite in terms of nanoparticle and complex can improve its blocking activities.

Chrysin Encapsulated Copper Nanoparticles with Low Dose of Gamma Radiation Elicit Tumor Cell Death Through p38 MAPK/NF-κB Pathways

Improving radiation effect on tumor cells using radiosensitizers is gaining traction for improving chemoradiotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) synthesized using chrysin as radiosensitizer with γ-radiation on biochemical and histopathological approaches in mice bearing Ehrlich solid tumor. CuNPs were characterized with irregular round sharp shape with size range of 21.19-70.79 nm and plasmon absorption at 273 nm. In vitro study on MCF-7 cells detected cytotoxic effect of CuNPs with IC50 of 57.2 ± 3.1 μg. In vivo study was performed on mice transplanted with Ehrlich solid tumor (EC). Mice were injected with CuNPs (0.67 mg/kg body weight) and/or exposed to low dose of gamma radiation (0.5 Gy). EC mice exposed to combined treatment of CuNPs and radiation showed a marked reduction in tumor volume, ALT and CAT, creatinine, calcium, and GSH, along with elevation in MDA, caspase-3 in parallel with inhibition of NF-κB, p38 MAPK, and cyclin D1 gene expression. Comparing histopathological findings of treatment groups ends that combined treatment was of higher efficacy, showing tumor tissue regression and increase in apoptotic cells. In conclusion, CuNPs with a low dose of gamma radiation showed more powerful ability for tumor suppression via promoting oxidative state, stimulating apoptosis, and inhibiting proliferation pathway through p38MAPK/NF-κB and cyclinD1.

A novel approach for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using the defensive gland extracts of the beetle, Luprops tristis Fabricius

Discovering novel natural resources for the biological synthesis of metal nanoparticles is one of the two key challenges facing by the field of nanoparticle synthesis. The second challenge is a lack of information on the chemical components needed for the biological synthesis and the chemical mechanism involved in the metal nanoparticles synthesis. In the current study, microwave-assisted silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesis employing the defensive gland extract of Mupli beetle, Luprops tristis Fabricius (Order: Coleoptera; Family: Tenebrionidae), addresses these two challenges. This study was conducted without killing the experimental insect. Earlier studies in our laboratory showed the presence of the phenolic compounds, 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 1,3-dihydroxy-2-methylbenzene, and 2,5-dimethylhydroquinone in the defensive gland extract of L. tristis. The results of the current study show that the phenolic compounds in the defensive gland extract of the beetle has the ability to reduce silver ions into AgNPs and also acts as a good capping and stabilizing agent. A possible mechanism for the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) into AgNPs is suggested. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic (HR-TEM) techniques. The stability of biologically synthesized nanoparticles was studied by zeta potential analysis. The TEM analysis confirmed that AgNPs are well dispersed and almost round shaped. The average size of nanoparticle ranges from 10 to 20 nm. EDX analysis showed that silver is the prominent metal present in the nanomaterial solution. The AgNPs synthesized have antibacterial property against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Radical scavenging (DPPH) assay was used to determine the antioxidant activity of the AgNPs. AgNPs exhibited anticancer activity in a cytotoxicity experiment against Dalton's lymphoma ascites (DLA) cell line.

Photocatalytic activity of biosynthesized silver nanoparticle fosters oxidative stress at nanoparticle interface resulting in antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities

Inside the biological milieu, nanoparticles with photocatalytic activity have potential to trigger cell death non-specifically due to production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon reacting with biological entities. Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) possessing narrow band gap energy can exhibit high light absorption property and significant photocatalytic activity. This study intends to explore the effects of ROS generated due to photocatalytic activity of AgNP on antimicrobial and cytotoxic propensities. To this end, AgNP was synthesized using the principle of green chemistry from the peel extract of Punica granatum L., and was characterized using UV-Vis spectroscope, transmission electron microscope and x-ray diffraction, and so forth. The antimicrobial activity of AgNP against studied bacteria indicated that, ROS generated at AgNP interface develop stress on bacterial membrane leading to bacterial cell death, whereas Alamar Blue dye reduction assay indicated that increased cytotoxic activity with increasing concentrations of AgNP. The γH2AX activity assay revealed that increasing the concentrations of AgNP increased DNA damaging activity. The results altogether demonstrated that both antimicrobial and cytotoxic propensities are triggered primarily due interfacial ROS generation by photocatalytic AgNP, which caused membrane deformation in bacteria and DNA damage in HT1080 cells resulting in cell death.

Effect of Sublethal Concentrations of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles on Bacillus cereus

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), which are produced on a large scale, pose a potential threat to various environments because they can interact with the microbial populations found in them. Bacteria that are widespread in soil, water, and plant material include the Bacillus cereus group, which plays an important role in biodegradation and the nutrient cycle and is a major factor determining ecological balance. This group includes, among others, the foodborne pathogen B. cereus sensu stricto (herein referred to as B. cereus). The aim of this study was a comprehensive assessment of the effects of commercially available ZnONPs on B. cereus. The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) for B. cereus was 1.6 mg/mL, and the MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) was 1.8 mg/mL. Growth of B. cereus was inhibited by a concentration of ZnONPs lower than or equal to MIC50. Concentrations from 0.2 to 0.8 mg/mL inhibited the growth of these bacteria in liquid media, induced symptoms of oxidative stress, and stimulated an environmental stress response in the form of biofilm and endospore formation. In addition, ZnONPs negatively affected the ability of the bacteria to break down the azo dye Evans Blue but enhanced the antimicrobial properties of phenolic compounds. Sublethal concentrations of ZnONPs generally decreased the activity of B. cereus cells, especially in the presence of phenolics, which indicates their potential toxicological impact, but at the same time they induced universal defence responses in these cells, which in the case of potential pathogens can hinder their removal.

Apigenin-coated gold nanoparticles as a cardioprotective strategy against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in male rats via reducing apoptosis

Aims

Cardiotoxicity is associated with doxorubicin (DOX), an effective anticancer drug. Apigenin has cardioprotective properties; it may be employed as a capping and reducing agent in synthesizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). This study examined the cardioprotective impact of AuNPs synthesized with apigenin (Api) in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC).

Main methods

Api-AuNPs were synthesized in a single pot without needing additional reagents for reducing gold ions or stabilizing the NPs. The cytotoxicity of Api-AuNPs on H9c2 heart cells was subsequently determined using the MTT assay. In the animal investigation, 40 male rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups: control, cardiotoxicity (DOX), DOX treated with apigenin (DOX + Api), or DOX treated with Api-AuNPs (DOX + Api-AuNPs). To examine heart function, echocardiography was conducted. Blood samples were obtained to evaluate injury indicators (Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), Cardiac Troponin I (cTn-I), Alanine transaminase (ALT), and Aspartate transaminase (AST)). The heart was removed under general anesthetic, weighed, and preserved in formalin solution. Six micrometer-thick cardiac tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin, eosin (H&E), and immunohistochemistry to identify cardiomyocyte apoptotic markers (Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase3).

Key findings

Api-AuNPs have an average size of 21.4 ± 11.6 nm and are stable in physiological environments. Api-AuNPs therapy substantially reduced body and heart weight loss compared to the DOX group. Injury indicators were reduced dramatically by Api-AuNPs treatment. Api-AuNPs inhibited myocardial apoptosis via modulating Bax, caspase3, and Bcl-2 and ameliorating tissue damage caused by DOX.

Significance

Api-AuNPs' anti-apoptotic activities provide cardioprotection against DIC. It has the potential to reduce cardiotoxicity and boost myocardial performance.

Therapeutic effects of the gold nanoparticle on obesity-triggered neuroinflammation: a review

Introduction: Obesity is considered a chronic non-communicable disease characterised by excess body fat. In recent years the prevalence of obesity has grown a lot. Individuals with obesity store the excess of nutrients consumed in the form of fat in adipose tissue, and generate an imbalance of this tissue, where there is the secretion of adipocytokines, which contributes to a peripheral and central inflammatory picture, reaching the central nervous system (CNS), generating neuroinflammation. There is still no effective and safe therapy for the treatment of obesity, many of the drugs marketed has serious side effects. Therefore, there is a search for therapies aimed mainly at reducing inflammation.Objective: In this work the possibility of using a new therapeutic option for obesity will be explored, using nanotechnology. Nanotechnology has gained prominence in recent years for being a promising technology for treatment and as a molecule-in-the-light in inflammatory diseases. Gold nanoparticles (GNP) stand out among nanomaterials because they demonstrate anti-inflammatory characteristics by various pathways, and have been widely used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, including in the CNS, demonstrating excellent results.Result: Thus, the use of GNP for the treatment of obesity is promising due to the inflammatory state of obesity, thus acting as anti-inflammatory at the peripheral and central levels.

Activities against Lung Cancer of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles: A Review

Nanomedicine is an interdisciplinary field where nanostructured objects are applied to treat or diagnose disease. Nanoparticles (NPs) are a special class of materials at nanometric scale that can be prepared from lipids, polymers, or noble metals through bottom-up approaches. Biological synthesis is a reliable, sustainable, and non-toxic bottom-up method that uses phytochemicals, microorganisms, and enzymes to induce the reduction of metal ions into NPs. Silver (Ag) NPs exhibit potent therapeutic properties that can be exploited to overcome the limitations of current treatment modalities for human health issues such as lung cancer (LC). Here, we review the preparation of AgNPs using biological synthesis and their application against LC using in vitro and in vivo models. An overview of the staging, diagnosis, genetic mutations, and treatment of LC, as well as its main subtypes, is presented. A summary of the reaction mechanisms of AgNPs using microbial cell cultures, plant extracts, phytochemicals, and amino acids is included. The use of capping agents in the biosynthesis of AgNPs with anticancer activity is also detailed. The history and biological activities of metal-based nanostructures synthesized with gold, copper, palladium, and platinum are considered. The possible anticancer mechanisms of AgNPs against LC models are covered. Our perspective about the future of AgNPs in LC treatment and nanomedicine is added.

Terminalia arjuna, a Cardioprotective Herbal Medicine-Relevancy in the Modern Era of Pharmaceuticals and Green Nanomedicine-A Review

Herbal medicines were the main source of therapeutic agents in the ancestral era. Terminalia arjuna (TA) is one such medicinal plant widely known for its several medicinal properties, especially its cardiovascular properties. They have several phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, polyphenols, triterpenoids, tannins, glycosides, and several minerals, proteins, and others that are responsible for the above-mentioned medicinal properties. In this review, we have first elaborated on the various processes and their parameters for the efficient extraction of relevant phytochemicals from TA extracts. Secondly, the mechanisms behind the various medicinal properties of TA extracts are explained. We have also highlighted the role of TA extracts on the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles, especially silver and gold nanoparticles, with an elucidation on the mechanisms behind the synthesis of nanoparticles. Finally, TA extracts-based polymeric formulations are discussed with limitations and future perspectives. We believe that this review could help researchers understand the importance of a well-known cardioprotective medicinal plant, TA, and its biomedical properties, as well as their role in green nanotechnology and various formulations explored for encapsulating them. This review will help researchers design better and greener nanomedicines as well as better formulations to improve the stability and bioavailability of TA extracts.

Curative Effects of Copper Iodide Embedded on Gallic Acid Incorporated in a Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) Liquid Bandage

In daily life, people are often receiving minor cuts due to carelessness, leaving wounds on the skin. If wound healing is interrupted and the healing process does not finish, pathogens can easily enter wounds and cause infection. Liquid bandages are a fast and convenient way to help stop the bleeding of superficial wounds. Moreover, antibacterial agents in liquid bandages can promote wound restoration and fight bacteria. Herein, a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) liquid bandage incorporating copper iodide nanoparticles (CuI NPs) was developed. CuI NPs were synthesized through green synthesis using gallic acid (GA) as a reducing and capping agent. The sizes of the CuI NPs, which were dependent on the concentration of GA, were 41.45, 43.51 and 49.71 nm, with the concentrations of gallic acid being 0, 2.5 mM and 5.0 mM, respectively. CuI NPs were analyzed using FTIR, XRD and SEM and tested for peroxidase-like properties and antibacterial activity. Then, PVA liquid bandages were formulated with different concentrations of stock CuI suspension. The results revealed that PVA liquid bandages incorporating 0.190% CuI synthesized with 5.0 mM of GA can kill bacteria within 24 h and have no harmful effects on human fibroblast cells.

Green synthesized apigenin conjugated gold nanoparticles inhibit cholangiocarcinoma cell activity and endothelial cell angiogenesis in vitro

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a rare malignancy of the biliary tract with extremely poor clinical outcomes due to a lack of effective therapies to improve disease management. The emerging green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has extensively provided their use in biomedical applications. In this study, we developed AuNPs via reducing gold salts with apigenin (4',5,7-trihydroxyflavone). The synthesized apigenin-conjugated AuNPs (api-AuNPs) were physicochemically characterized by various techniques before evaluation their biological and functional inhibition in a CCA cell line, KKU-M055. The mean size of api-AuNPs was 90.34 ± 22.82 nm with zeta potential of -36 ± 0.55. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀, 0.8 mg/mL) of api-AuNPs on cell proliferation of KKU-M055 was 1.9-fold less than that of an immortalized human cholangiocyte cell line, MMNK1 (IC₅₀, 1.5 mg/mL). Moreover, api-AuNPs induced cell apoptosis via the up-regulation of Bax, Bid, and Caspase 3, and down-regulation of Bcl2, leading to elevated caspase 3/7, 8, 9 activities and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The api-AuNPs significantly inhibited the migration of KKU-M055 cells and suppressed the proliferation, migration, and in vitro tube formation of vascular endothelial cells. Collectively, our findings indicate the dual abilities of api-AuNPs that potentially inhibit cancer cell growth and motility as well as endothelial cell-mediated angiogenesis, which may offer a novel therapeutic avenue to treat CCA patients effectively.

Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Enhance the Anticancer Efficacy of Platinum(IV)-Phenolate Conjugates in Breast Cancer Cell Lines

The main reasons for the limited clinical efficacy of the platinum(II)-based agent cisplatin include drug resistance and significant side effects. Due to their better stability, as well as the possibility to introduce biologically active ligands in their axial positions constructing multifunctional prodrugs, creating platinum(IV) complexes is a tempting strategy for addressing these limitations. Another strategy for developing chemotherapeutics with lower toxicity relies on the ability of nanoparticles to accumulate in greater quantities in tumor tissues through passive targeting. To combine the two approaches, three platinum(IV) conjugates based on a cisplatin scaffold containing in the axial positions derivatives of caffeic and ferulic acid were prepared and loaded into SBA-15 to produce the corresponding mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). The free platinum(IV) conjugates demonstrated higher or comparable activity with respect to cisplatin against different human breast cancer cell lines, while upon immobilization, superior antiproliferative activity with markedly increased cytotoxicity (more than 1000-fold lower IC₅₀ values) compared to cisplatin was observed. Mechanistic investigations with the most potent conjugate, cisplatin-diacetyl caffeate (1), and the corresponding MSNs (SBA-15|1) in a 4T1 mouse breast cancer cell line showed that these compounds induce apoptotic cell death causing strong caspase activation. In vivo, in BALB/c mice, 1 and SBA-15|1 inhibited the tumor growth while decreasing the necrotic area and lowering the mitotic rate.

The hydroperoxyl radical scavenging activity of natural hydroxybenzoic acids in oil and aqueous environments: Insights into the mechanism and kinetics

Foods that contain hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives (HBA) include red fruits, black radish, onion, and potato peel. HBA are widely known for their anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and especially antioxidant capabilities; however, a comprehensive study of the mechanism and kinetics of the antiradical action of these compounds has not been performed. Here, we report a study on the mechanisms and kinetics of hydroperoxyl radical scavenging activity of HBA by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. According to the results, HBA exert low HOO^• antiradical activity in the nonpolar environment with overall rate constants in the range of k_overall = 5.90 × 10^-6 - 4.10 × 10³ M^-1 s^-1. However, most HBA exhibit significant HOO^• antiradical activity (k_overall = 10⁵ - 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1) by the single electron transfer (SET) reaction of the phenoxide anions in water at physiological pH. The overall rate constant increases with increasing pH values in the majority of the substances studied. At pH ≤ 4, gentisic acid had the best HOO^• antiradical activity (log(k_overall) = 3.7-4.8), however at pH > 4, the largest HOO^• radical scavenging activity (log(k_overall) = 4.8-9.8) was almost exclusively found for gallic and syringic acids. Salicylic and 5-sulphosalicylic acids have the lowest antiradical activity across most of the pH range. The activities of the majority of the acids in this study are faster than the reference compound Trolox. Thus, in the aqueous physiological environment, these HBA are good natural antioxidants.

Nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors for the detection of natural antioxidants in food and biological samples: research progress

Antioxidants are healthy substances that are beneficial to the human body and exist mainly in natural and synthetic forms. Among many kinds of antioxidants, the natural antioxidants have great applications in many fields such as food chemistry, medical care, and clinical application. In recent years, many efforts have been made for the determination of natural antioxidants. Nano-electrochemical sensors combining electrochemistry and nanotechnology have been widely used in the determination of natural antioxidants due to their unique advantages. Therefore, a large number of nanomaterials such as metal oxide, carbon materials, and conducting polymer have attracted much attention in the field of electrochemical sensors due to their good catalytic effect and stable performance. This review mainly introduces the construction of electrochemical sensors based on different nanomaterials, such as metallic nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymer nanomaterials, and other nanocomposites, and their application to the detection of natural antioxidants, including ascorbic acid, phenolic acids, flavonoid, tryptophan, citric acid, and other natural antioxidants. In the end, the limitations of the existing nano-sensing technology, the latest development trend, and the application prospect for various natural antioxidant substances are summarized and analyzed. We expect that this review will be helpful to researchers engaged in electrochemical sensors.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Spent Coffee Ground Extracts: Process Modelling and Optimization

Large amounts of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are produced annually worldwide. SCGs contain high levels of phenolics and other bioactive compounds that make them a potential source of reducing and stabilizing agents for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles. This study investigates the use of SCG extracts as a green strategy to produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). SCG extracts were obtained using aqueous ethanol as the solvent and then contacted with a silver nitrate solution under the selected conditions. A central composite design coupled with response surface methodology was used to evaluate the effects of solvent composition (C = 30–70% v/v), silver-to-phenolic ratio (R = 3–7 mol/mol), temperature (T = 25–55 °C) and pH (10–12) on the production of AgNPs. Characterization of AgNPs by DLS, TEM and XRD techniques showed that they were highly crystalline with a narrow size distribution. Under optimal reaction conditions, AgNPs with an average size of about 10 nm and a zeta potential of −30.5 to −20.7 mV were obtained. Overall, the results of this study indicate that SCGs are a promising material for the green synthesis of small-sized and stable AgNPs.

Synthesis of biocompatible Konjac glucomannan stabilized silver nanoparticles, with Asystasia gangetica phenolic extract for colorimetric detection of mercury (II) ion

Herein, the synthesis of a biocompatible silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), for colorimetric detection of toxic mercury (II) ion (Hg²⁺), is reported. Phenolic-rich fraction of Asystasia gangetica leaf was extracted and used as a reductant of silver salt, all within the hydrophilic konjac glucomannan (KgM) solution as stabilizer, at room temperature (RT). The bioactive components of Asystasia gangetica phenolic extract (AGPE), as elucidated with a (UHPLC-MS-QTOF-MS), revealed plethora of phenolic compounds, which can facilitate the reduction of silver salt at ambient conditions. Sparkling yellow colloidal solution of KgM-AgNPs was realized within 1 h, at RT, having a UV–vis maximum at 420 nm. KgM-AgNPs was characterized using UV–vis, Raman and (FTIR), TEM, SEM, EDS, XRD, TGA/DTG. TEM and FESEM images showed that KgM-AgNPs were spherical, with particle size distribution around 10–15 nm from TEM. The KgM-AgNPs biocompatibility was investigated on mouse L929 fibrobroblast and rat erythrocytes, without any harmful damages on the tested cells. In aqueous environment, KgM-AgNPs demonstrated good detection capacity toward Hg²⁺, in a Hg²⁺ concentration dependent fashion, within 3 min. Absorbance ratios (A₃₆₀/A₄₀₈) was linear with Hg²⁺ concentrations from 0.010–10.0 to 10.0–60.0 µM, with an estimated (LOD) of 3.25 nM. The probe was applied in lake water sample, with satisfactory accuracy.

Valorization of agro-industrial biowaste to green nanomaterials for wastewater treatment: Approaching green chemistry and circular economy principles

Water pollution is one of the most critical issues worldwide and is a priority in all scientific agendas. Green nanotechnology presents a plethora of promising avenues for wastewater treatment. This review discusses the current trends in the valorization of zero-cost, biodegradable, and readily available agro-industrial biowaste to produce green bio-nanocatalysts and bio-nanosorbents for wastewater treatment. The promising roles of green bio-nanocatalysts and bio-nanosorbents in removing organic and inorganic water contaminants are discussed. The potent antimicrobial activity of bio-derived nanodisinfectants against water-borne pathogenic microbes is reviewed. The bioactive molecules involved in the chelation and tailoring of green synthesized nanomaterials are highlighted along with the mechanisms involved. Furthermore, this review emphasizes how the valorization of agro-industrial biowaste to green nanomaterials for wastewater treatment adheres to the fundamental principles of green chemistry, circular economy, nexus thinking, and zero-waste manufacturing. The potential economic, environmental, and health impacts of valorizing agro-industrial biowaste to green nanomaterials are highlighted. The challenges and future outlooks for the management of agro-industrial biowaste and safe application of green nanomaterials for wastewater treatment are summarized.

Phyto-complexation of galactomannan-stabilized calcium hydroxide and selenium-calcium hydroxide nanocomposite to enhance the seed-priming effect in Vigna radiata

The evaluation of nano-priming effect with galactomannan stabilized Phyto-complexed calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), selenium oxyanion‑calcium hydroxide SeO-(Ca(OH)₂), and selenium‑calcium hydroxide Se-(Ca(OH)₂) nanocomposites was carried out in Vigna radiata (Green gram) seeds. The green source Cassia angustifolia seed rich in galactomannan and other phytoconstituents was detected experimentally and characterized with GC-MS, UV, FT-IR, NMR, XRD, and SEM studies. The highly active galactomannan and other biomolecules, enable their terminal oxygen and hydroxide groups to bind with calcium and selenium ions through bidentate and monodentate chelation, followed by bio-reduction. On the mild-thermal agitation, bio-stabilized (Ca(OH)₂), SeO-(Ca(OH)₂), and Se-(Ca(OH)₂) nanocomposite coated with seed-derived biomolecules were precipitated under an alkaline condition. The size and morphological parameters of bio-fabricated nanocomposites were characterized to exhibit the spherical and hexagonal shape in nanoscale images of size 17.9 nm for (Ca(OH)₂), 56.2 nm for SeO-(Ca(OH)₂), and 69.3 nm Se-(Ca(OH)₂). The sub-standard seed lot of Vigna radiata (Green gram) seeds (71%) was examined using synthesized nanocomposites at various concentrations, and the obtained physiological parameters in seedlings were compared with hydro-primed seeds. The nano-priming action of all the Phyto-complexed nanocomposites was predicted with a positive response, where the porous Se-(Ca(OH)₂) possess high efficacy interaction on seed embryos and beneficially results at 90% germination.

Investigating the in vitro photothermal effect of green synthesized apigenin-coated gold nanoparticle on colorectal carcinoma

Applying toxic chemical to the synthesis of stable gold nanoparticles is one of the limitations of gold nanoparticles for therapeutic applications such as photothermal therapy. Plant compounds such as apigenin (API) with therapeutic potential can be applied in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. API‐coated gold nanoparticles (Api@AuNPs) with an average size of 19.1 nm and a surface charge of −4.3 mV have been synthesized by a simple and efficient technique. The stability of Api@AuNPs in the biological environment was verified through UV‐Vis spectroscopy. Based on Raman and FTIR spectroscopy analysis, chemical binding of API on the surface of Api@AuNPs through hydroxyl and carbonyl functional groups was found to be the main reason for the stability of the Api@AuNPs in comparison with citrate‐coated gold nanoparticles (Cit@AuNPs). The synthesized Api@AuNPs do not cause major toxic effects up to 128 ppm. Api@AuNP‐mediated photothermal therapy leads to the indiscriminate eradication of almost half of both mouse fibroblastic (L929) and colorectal cancer (CT26) cells. Flow‐cytometry analysis revealed that the cell death mechanism is mainly apoptosis. In the apoptosis triggered cell death in photothermal treatment, Api@AuNPs are preferred over commonly used gold nanoparticles in photothermal treatments which mostly trigger the necrosis cell death pathway.

Evaluation of Gallic Acid-Coated Gold Nanoparticles as an Anti-Aging Ingredient

Hyperglycemic environment-induced oxidative stress-mediated matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) plays a crucial role in the degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which might contribute to premature skin aging. Synthesized, environmentally friendly gallic acid-coated gold nanoparticles (GA–AuNPs) have been evaluated as an anti-aging antioxidant. Their microstructure was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed that GA–AuNPs are spherical when prepared at pH 11. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis revealed that the average hydrodynamic diameter of a GA–AuNP is approximately 40 nm and with a zeta potential of −49.63 ± 2.11 mV. Additionally, the present data showed that GA–AuNPs have a superior ability to inhibit high glucose-mediated MMP-1-elicited type I collagen degradation in dermal fibroblast cells. Collectively, our data indicated that high-glucose-mediated ROS production was reduced upon cell treatment with GA–AuNPs, which blocked p38 MAPK/ERK-mediated c-Jun, c-Fos, ATF-2 phosphorylation, and the phosphorylation of NFκB, leading to the down-regulation of MMP-1 mRNA and protein expression in high glucose-treated cells. Our findings suggest that GA-AuNPs have a superior ability to inhibit high-glucose-mediated MMP-1-elicited ECM degradation, which highlights its potential as an anti-aging ingredient.

Effect on Human Vascular Endothelial Cells of Au Nanoparticles Synthesized from Vitex mollis

A green method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles is proposed using hydroethanolic extract of Vitex mollis fruit (Vm extract) as a reducer and stabilizer. The formation of gold nanoparticles synthesized with Vm extract (AuVmNPs) was monitored by measuring the ultraviolet-visible spectra. The morphology and crystalline phase were determined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Synthesized nanoparticles were generally spherical, and the size distribution obtained by transmission electron microscopy shows two populations with mean sizes of 12.5 and 22.5 nm. Cell viability assay using MTT and cellular apoptosis studies using annexin V on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and the human mammary epithelial cell line (MCF10A) indicate that AuVmNPs have low toxicity. Cell migration tests indicate that AuVmNPs significantly inhibit HUVEC cell migration in a dose-dependent manner. The evaluation of the localization of AuVmNPs in HUVECs using confocal laser scanning microscopy indicates that nanoparticles penetrate cells and are found in the cytosol without preferential distribution and without entering the nucleus. The inhibitory effect on cellular migration and low toxicity suggest AuVmNPs as appropriate candidates in future studies of antiangiogenic activity.

Improving the Antimicrobial and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resins via Nanomodification: An Overview

The main purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview on the preparation of multifunctional epoxies, with improved antimicrobial activity and enhanced mechanical properties through nanomodification. In the first section, we focus on the approaches to achieve antimicrobial activity, as well as on the methods used to evaluate their efficacy against bacteria and fungi. Relevant application examples are also discussed, with particular reference to antifouling and anticorrosion coatings for marine environments, dental applications, antimicrobial fibers and fabrics, and others. Subsequently, we discuss the mechanical behaviors of nanomodified epoxies with improved antimicrobial properties, analyzing the typical damage mechanisms leading to the significant toughening effect of nanomodification. Some examples of mechanical properties of nanomodified polymers are provided. Eventually, the possibility of achieving, at the same time, antimicrobial and mechanical improvement capabilities by nanomodification with nanoclay is discussed, with reference to both nanomodified epoxies and glass/epoxy composite laminates. According to the literature, a nanomodified epoxy can successfully exhibit antibacterial properties, while increasing its fracture toughness, even though its tensile strength may decrease. As for laminates-obtaining antibacterial properties is not followed by improved interlaminar properties.

Plasmonic hyperthermia or radiofrequency electric field hyperthermia of cancerous cells through green-synthesized curcumin-coated gold nanoparticles

Nanoparticle-mediated hyperthermia is one of the prominent adjuvant therapies which has been faced by many problematic challenges such as efficiency and safety. To compare the nanoparticle-mediated photothermal therapy and radiofrequency electric field hyperthermia, green-synthesized curcumin-coated gold nanoparticles (Cur@AuNPs) were applied in an in vitro study. Using recently published methodologies, each step of the study was performed. Through green chemistry, curcumin was applied as both a reducing and a capping agent in the gold nanoparticle synthesis process. Various techniques were applied for the characterization of the synthesized nanoparticles. The heating rate of Cur@AuNPs in the presence of RFEF or laser irradiation was recorded by using a non-contact thermometer. The cellular uptake of the Cur@AuNPs was studied by ICP-AES. The cellular viability and apoptosis rate of different treatment were measured to investigate the effect of two different nano-hyperthermia techniques on the murine colorectal cancer cell line. The average size of Cur@AuNPs was 7.2 ± 3.3 nm. The stability of the gold nanoparticles in the phosphate buffer saline with and without fetal bovine serum was verified by UV-Vis spectroscopy. FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and TEM indicate that the stability is a result of phenolic coating on the surface of nanoparticles. Cur@AuNPs can absorb both light and radiofrequency electric field exposure in a way that could kill cancerous cells in a significant number (30% in 64 μg/ml concentration). Green-synthesized Cur@AuNPs could induce apoptosis cell death in photothermal therapy and radiofrequency electric field hyperthermia.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Natural Extracts with Proven Antioxidant Activity

Natural extracts are a rich source of biomolecules that are useful not only as antioxidant drugs or diet supplements but also as complex reagents for the biogenic synthesis of metallic nanoparticles. The natural product components can act as strong reducing and capping substrates guaranteeing the stability of formed NPs. The current work demonstrates the suitability of extracts of Camellia sinensis, Ilex paraguariensis, Salvia officinalis, Tilia cordata, Levisticum officinale, Aegopodium podagraria, Urtica dioica, Capsicum baccatum, Viscum album, and marine algae Porphyra Yezoensis for green synthesis of AgNPs. The antioxidant power of methanolic extracts was estimated at the beginning according to their free radical scavenging activity by the DPPH method and reducing power activity by CUPRAC and SNPAC (silver nanoparticle antioxidant capacity) assays. The results obtained by the CUPRAC and SNAPC methods exhibited excellent agreement (R2~0.9). The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS) particle size, and zeta potential. The UV-vis absorption spectra showed a peak at 423 nm confirming the presence of AgNPs. The shapes of extract-mediated AgNPs were mainly spherical, spheroid, rod-shaped, agglomerated crystalline structures. The NPs exhibited a high negative zeta potential value in the range from -49.8 mV to -56.1 mV, proving the existence of electrostatic stabilization. FTIR measurements indicated peaks corresponding to different functional groups such as carboxylic acids, alcohol, phenol, esters, ethers, aldehydes, alkanes, and proteins, which were involved in the synthesis and stabilization of AgNPs. Among the examined extracts, green tea showed the highest activity in all antioxidant tests and enabled the synthesis of the smallest nanoparticles, namely 62.51, 61.19, and 53.55 nm, depending on storage times of 30 min, 24 h, and 72 h, respectively. In turn, the Capsicum baccatum extract was distinguished by the lowest zeta potential, decreasing with storage time from -66.0 up to -88.6 mM.

Electro-conductive carbon nanofibers containing ferrous sulfate for bone tissue engineering

The application of electroactive scaffolds can be promising for bone tissue engineering applications. In the current paper, we aimed to fabricate an electro-conductive scaffold based on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) containing ferrous sulfate. FeSO₄·7H₂O salt with different concentrations 5, 10, and 15 wt%, were blended with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer as the precursor and converted to Fe₂O3/CNFs nanocomposite by electrospinning and heat treatment. The characterization was conducted using SEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR, and Raman methods. The results showed that the incorporation of Fe salt induces no adverse effect on the nanofibers' morphology. EDX analysis confirmed that the Fe ions are uniformly dispersed throughout the CNF mat. FTIR spectroscopy showed the interaction of Fe salt with PAN polymer. Raman spectroscopy showed that the incorporation of FeSO4·7H₂O reduced the ID/IG ratio, indicating more ordered carbon in the synthesized nanocomposite. Electrical resistance measurement depicted that, although the incorporation of ferrous sulfate reduced the electrical conductivity, the conductive is suitable for electrical stimulation. The in vitro studies revealed that the prepared nanocomposites were cytocompatible and only negligible toxicity (less than 10%) induced by CNFs/Fe₂O₃ fabricated from PAN FeSO₄·7H₂O 15%. Although various nanofibrous composite fabricated with Fe NPs have been evaluated for tissue engineering applications, CNFs exhibited promising properties, such as excellent mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and electrical conductivity. These results showed that the fabricated nanocomposites could be applied as the bone tissue engineering scaffold.

Gold Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Extracts of Cyclopia intermedia, Commonly Known as Honeybush, Amplify the Cytotoxic Effects of Doxorubicin

Cyclopia intermedia (C. intermedia) is an indigenous South African shrub used to prepare the popular medicinal honeybush (HB) tea. This plant contains high levels of mangiferin (MGF), a xanthonoid that was reported to have numerous biological activities, including anti-tumor activity. MGF and extracts that contain high concentrations of MGF, such as extracts from Mangifera indica L. or mango have been used to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using green nanotechnology. It has previously been shown that when AuNPs synthesized from M. indica L. extracts are used in combination with doxorubicin (DOX) and Ayurvedic medicine, the anti-tumor effects appear to be augmented. It has also been demonstrated that MGF used in combination with DOX resulted in enhanced anti-tumor effects. In this study, C. intermedia (HB) and MGF were used to synthesize HB-AuNPs and MGF-AuNPs, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the AuNPs were characterized by the UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The cytotoxicity of HB-AuNPs and MGF-AuNPs were assessed on human colon (Caco-2), prostate (PC-3) and glioblastoma (U87) cancer cells; as well as normal breast epithelial (MCF-12A) cells using the MTT assay. Both HB-AuNPs and MGF-AuNPs demonstrated relatively low cytotoxicity in these cells. However, when these nanoparticles were used in combination with DOX, the cytotoxicity of DOX was significantly augmented.

Iron oxide/gold nanoparticles-decorated reduced graphene oxide nanohybrid as the thermo-radiotherapy agent

The main focus of the current study is the fabrication of a multifunctional nanohybrid based on graphene oxide (GO)/iron oxide/gold nanoparticles (NPs) as the combinatorial cancer treatment agent. Gold and iron oxide NPs formed on the GONPs via the in situ synthesis approach. The characterisations showed that gold and iron oxide NPs formed onto the GO. Cell toxicity assessment revealed that the fabricated nanohybrid exhibited negligible toxicity against MCF-7 cells in low doses (<50 ppm). Temperature measurement showed a time and dose-dependent heat elevation under the interaction of the nanohybrid with the radio frequency (RF) wave. The highest temperature was recorded using 200 ppm concentration nanohybrid during 40 min exposure. The combinatorial treatments demonstrated that the maximum cell death (average of 53%) was induced with the combination of the nanohybrid with RF waves and radiotherapy (RT). The mechanistic study using the flow cytometry technique illustrated that early apoptosis was the main underlying cell death. Moreover, the dose enhancement factor of 1.63 and 2.63 were obtained from RT and RF, respectively. To sum up, the authors' findings indicated that the prepared nanohybrid could be considered as multifunctional and combinatorial cancer therapy agents.
