Abstract
Since the Palaeolithic Age food has been closely linked to the development of the human species, meeting our energy needs and fuelling our cell metabolism. Without food there can be no life. However, over the centuries food and our eating habits have also had a damaging effect, whether through deficiencies, excesses, direct toxic effects or as a vector of pathogenic agents. The human species has known two major food revolutions: one at the start of the Neolithic Age and the other very recently in the years following the Second World War. In this article we will be looking at the ambiguous relationship between food and human health as well as the health of our planet.

Abstract
Cultivated potatoes are incredibly diverse, ranging from diploid to pentaploid and encompass four different species. They are adapted to disparate environments and conditions and carry unique alleles for resistance to pests and pathogens. Describing how diversity is partitioned within and among these populations is essential to understanding the potato genome and effectively utilizing landraces in breeding. This task is complicated by the difficulty of making comparisons across cytotypes and extensive admixture within section petota. We genotyped 730 accessions from the US Potato genebank including wild diploids and cultivated diploids and tetraploids using Genotype-by-sequencing. This data set allowed us to interrogate population structure and diversity as well as generate core subsets which will support breeders in efficiently screening genebank material for biotic and abiotic stress resistance alleles. We found that even controlling for ploidy, tetraploid material exhibited higher observed and expected heterozygosity than diploid accessions. In particular group chilotanum material was the most heterozygous and the only taxa not to exhibit any inbreeding. This may in part be because group chilotanum has a history of introgression not just from wild species, but landraces as well. All group chilotanum, exhibits introgression from group andigenum except clones from Southern South America near its origin, where the two groups are not highly differentiated. Moving north, we do not observe evidence for the same level of admixture back into group andigenum. This suggests that extensive history of admixture is a particular characteristic of chilotanum.

Abstract
Starch degradation provides energy and signaling molecules for plant growth, development, defense, and stress response. α-amylase (AMY) is one of the most important enzymes in this process. Potato tubers are rich in starch, and the hydrolysis of starch into sugar negatively impacts the frying quality of potato. Despite its importance, the AMY gene family has not been fully explored in potatoes. Here, we performed a detailed analysis of the StAMY gene family to determine its role in potato. Twenty StAMY genes were identified across the potato genome and were divided into three subgroups. The promoters of StAMY genes contained an array of cis-acting elements involved in growth and development, phytohormone signaling, and stress and defense responses. StAMY8, StAMY9, StAMY12, and StAMY20 were specifically expressed in mature tubers. Different StAMY gene family members tended to be upregulated in response to β-aminobutyric acid (BABA), Phytophthora infestans (P. infestans), benzothiadiazole (BTH), heat, salt, and drought stress. In addition, different StAMY gene family members tended to be responsive to abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) treatment. These results suggest that StAMY gene family members may be involved in starch and sugar metabolism, defense, stress response, and phytohormone signaling. The results of this study may be applicable to other starchy crops and lay a foundation for further research on the functions and regulatory mechanisms of AMY genes.

Abstract
Glycoalkaloids (TGAs, total glycoalkaloids), toxic secondary metabolites, are found in potatoes (110-335 mg·kg-1 DW), mainly in the peel. Colorful, unpeeled potatoes are an innovative raw material for the production of snacks which are poorly tested in terms of their glycoalkaloid content. Third-generation snacks and French fries made from red-fleshed Mulberry Beauty (MB) and purple-fleshed Double Fun (DF) potatoes were produced with the use of 1% solutions of ascorbic, citric, lactic, malic, and tartaric acids to stabilize the structure of anthocyanins in the raw material and maintain their color in obtained products. The influence of the type of acid and thermal processes, like frying, microwaving, and baking, on the content of glycoalkaloids in ready-made products was examined. Only 0.45-1.26 mg·100 g-1 of TGA was found in pellet snacks and 1.32-1.71 mg·100 g-1 in French fries. Soaking blanched potatoes in organic acid solution reduced the α-chaconine content by 91-97% in snacks and by 57-93% in French fries in relation to the raw material to the greatest extent after the use of malic acid and the DF variety. The effect of lactic and citric acid was also beneficial, especially in the production of baked French fries from MB potatoes.

Abstract
Pectin is a structural polysaccharide and a major component of plant cell walls. Pectate lyases are a class of enzymes that degrade demethylated pectin by cleaving the α-1,4-glycosidic bond, and they play an important role in plant growth and development. Currently, little is known about the PL gene family members and their involvement in salt stress in potato. In this study, we utilized bioinformatics to identify members of the potato pectate lyase gene family and analyzed their gene and amino acid sequence characteristics. The results showed that a total of 27 members of the pectate lyase gene family were identified in potato. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that these genes were divided into eight groups. Analysis of their promoters indicated that several members' promoter regions contained a significant number of hormone and stress response elements. Further, we found that several members responded positively to salt treatment under single salt and mixed salt stress. Since StPL18 exhibited a consistent expression pattern under both single and mixed salt stress conditions, its subcellular localization was determined. The results indicated that StPL18 is localized in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. The results will establish a foundation for analyzing the functions of potato pectate lyase family members and their expression under salt stress.

Abstract
Temperature is one of the important environmental factors affecting plant growth, yield and quality. Moreover, appropriately low temperature is also beneficial for tuber coloration. The red potato variety Jianchuanhong, whose tuber color is susceptible to temperature, and the purple potato variety Huaxinyangyu, whose tuber color is stable, were used as experimental materials and subjected to 20 °C (control check), 15 °C and 10 °C treatments during the whole growth period. The effects of temperature treatment on the phenotype, the expression levels of structural genes related to anthocyanins and the correlations of each indicator were analyzed. The results showed that treatment at 10 °C significantly inhibited the potato plant height, and the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic parameters in the leaves were reduced, and the enzyme activities of SOD and POD were significantly increased, all indicating that the leaves were damaged. Treatment at 10 °C also affected the tuberization of Huaxinyangyu and reduced the tuberization and coloring of Jianchuanhong, while treatment at 15 °C significantly increased the stem diameter, root-to-shoot ratio, yield and content of secondary metabolites, especially anthocyanins. Similarly, the expression of structural genes were enhanced in two pigmented potatoes under low-temperature treatment conditions. In short, proper low temperature can not only increase yield but also enhance secondary metabolites production. Previous studies have not focused on the effects of appropriate low-temperature treatment during the whole growth period of potato on the changes in metabolites during tuber growth and development, these results can provide a theoretical basis and technical guidance for the selection of pigmented potatoes with better nutritional quality planting environment and the formulation of cultivation measures.

Abstract
The GATA gene family belongs to a kind of transcriptional regulatory protein featuring a zinc finger motif, which is essential for plant growth and development. However, the identification of the GATA gene family in tetraploid potato is still not performed. In the present research, a total of 88 GATA genes in the tetraploid potato C88.v1 genome were identified by bioinformatics methods. These StGATA genes had an uneven distribution on 44 chromosomes, and the corresponding StGATA proteins were divided into four subfamilies (I-IV) based on phylogenetic analysis. The cis-elements of StGATA genes were identified, including multiple cis-elements related to light-responsive and hormone-responsive. The collinearity analysis indicates that segmental duplication is a key driving force for the expansion of GATA gene family in tetraploid potato, and that the GATA gene families of tetraploid potato and Arabidopsis share a closer evolutionary relationship than rice. The transcript profiling analysis showed that all 88 StGATA genes had tissue-specific expression, indicating that the StGATA gene family members participate in the development of multiple potato tissues. The RNA-seq analysis was also performed on the tuber flesh of two potato varieties with different color, and 18 differentially expressed GATA transcription factor genes were screened, of which eight genes were validated through qRT-PCR. In this study, we identified and characterized StGATA transcription factors in tetraploid potato for the first time, and screened differentially expressed genes in potato flesh with different color. It provides a theoretical basis for further understanding the StGATA gene family and its function in anthocyanin biosynthesis.

Abstract
The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), an important field crop consumed extensively worldwide, is adversely affected by abiotic stress factors especially drought. Therefore, it is vital to understand the genetic mechanism under drought stress to decrease loose of yield and quality . This trial aimed to screen drought-responsive gene expressions of potato and determine the drought-tolerant potato cultivar. The trial pattern is a completely randomized block design (CRBD) with four replications under greenhouse conditions. Four cultivars (Brooke, Orwell, Vr808, Shc909) were irrigated with four different water regimes (control and three stress conditions), and the gene expression levels of 10 potato genes were investigated. The stress treatments as follows: Control = 100% field capacity; slight drought = 75% field capacity; moderate drought = 50% field capacity, and severe drought 25% field capacity. To understand the gene expression under drought stress in potato genotypes, RT-qPCR analysis was performed and results showed that the genes most associated with drought tolerance were the StRD22 gene, MYB domain transcription factor, StERD7, Sucrose Synthase (SuSy), ABC Transporter, and StDHN1. The StHSP100 gene had the lowest genetic expression in all cultivars. Among the cultivars, the Orwell exhibited the highest expression of the StRD22 gene under drought stress. Overall, the cultivar with the highest gene expression was the Vr808, closely followed by the Brooke cultivar. As a result, it was determined that potato cultivars Orwell, Vr808, and Brooke could be used as parents in breeding programs to develop drought tolerant potato cultivars.

Abstract
α-Solanine and α-chaconine are the two most predominant glycoalkaloids (GAs) present in potato. Potato peel contains a high concentration of GAs, which are especially interesting for application in the pharmaceutical industry due to their different beneficial properties (such as anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, antipyretic, antiviral, fungicide, and antibiotic activities, among others); so, potato peel waste can be valorized by extracting these biologically active compounds. For this, a green, quick, and efficient miniaturized analytical approach based on ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) combined with HPLC-DAD was developed to quantify α-solanine and α-chaconine in potato peel. Some parameters of the extraction were optimized, including the extraction method, the type of solvent, and the sample/solvent ratio, by a three-factor, three-level (33) full factorial experimental design. The optimal extraction conditions were obtained with UAE using methanol as a solvent and a sample/solvent ratio of 1:10 (w/v, g/mL). The analytical greenness metric for sample preparation (AGREEprep) tool was used to assess the greenness of the methods used. The tool revealed an acceptable green analysis, with 0.61 points. The method was validated and applied to the evaluation of GAs in the peel of 15 commercial varieties of potato. The amount of glycoalkaloids found in the samples evaluated ranged from 143 to 1273 mg/kg and from 117 to 1742 mg/kg dry weight for α-solanine and α-chaconine, respectively. These results reveal the important variability that exists between potato varieties; so, their analysis is of great importance to select the most suitable ones for biovalorization (e.g., the Amandine and Rudolph varieties, with around 3000 mg/kg, in total, of both GAs). To provide higher stability to the peel during storage, freeze-drying or a medium-temperature drying process resulted preferable to avoid GA degradation. Overall, this study will contribute to the expansion of the future biovalorization of potato peel waste as well as provide a powerful analytical tool for GA analysis.

Abstract
Despite its millennial existence and empirical documentation, the ethnological knowledge of herbs is a more recent phenomenon. The knowledge of their historical uses as food, medicine, source of income and small-scale businesses, and the sociological impacts are threatened due to the slow ethnobotanical research drive. Species of the genus Solanum have long been extensively used in folk medicine to treat various illnesses of humans since the dawn of civilization. All data were systematically obtained from papers, monographs, and books written in Uzbek, Russian, and English through various scientific online databases, including Google, Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Semantic Scholar, Science Direct, and Web of Science using specific keywords focused on eight Solanum species. Eight native and non-native Solanum species as S. dulcamara L., S. lycopersicum L., S. melongena L., S. nigrum L., S. rostratum Dunal., S. sisymbriifolium Lam., S. tuberosum L., and S. villosum Mill. have been recorded in Uzbekistan of Central Asia. In this article we presented recently obtained data on the diversity, morphological characteristics, global distribution, habitat, population status, phenology, reproduction, pharmacology and phytochemistry of these Solanum species in Uzbekistan. Furthermore, relying on a combination of literature reviews and analyses from various scientific papers, we focus on food consumption coupled with global ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological uses in human diseases of the Solanum species growing in Uzbekistan. Since the dawn of civilization, these eight cultivated and non-cultivated species of Solanum have provided sustainable resources of medicinal plants in Uzbekistan to prevent and treat various human diseases. Based on the collected data, it was shown that Solanum species have not been studied ethnobotanically and ethnomedicinally in Uzbekistan and it is necessary to conduct phytochemical and biotechnological research on them in the future. Traditional uses and scientific evaluation of Solanum indicate that S. nigrum, S. sisymbriifolium and S. tuberosum are one of the most widely used species in some parts of the world. Although considerable progress has been made to comprehend the chemical and biological properties of S. nigrum and S. tuberosum species, more research on the pharmacology and toxicology of these species is needed to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of their biologically active extracts and isolated bioactive compounds. Additionally, conducting additional research on the structure-activity relationship of certain isolated phytochemicals has the potential to enhance their biological efficacy and advance the scientific utilization of traditional applications of Solanum taxa.

Abstract
For potato production, continuous cropping (CC) could lead to autotoxicity buildup and microflora imbalance in the field soil, which may result in failure of crops and reduction in yield. In this study, non-targeted metabolomics (via liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)) combined with metagenomic profiling (via high-throughput amplicon sequencing) were used to evaluate correlations between metabolomics of potato root exudates and communities of bacteria and fungi around potato plants to illustrate the impacts of CC. Potato plants were grown in soil collected from fields with various CC years (0, 1, 4, and 7 years). Metabolomic analysis showed that the contents and types of potential autotoxins in potato root exudates increased significantly in CC4 and CC7 plants (i.e., grown in soils with 4 and 7 years of CC). The differentially expressed metabolites were mainly produced via alpha-linolenic acid metabolism in plant groups CC0 and CC1 (i.e., no CC or 1 year CC). The metabolomics of the groups CC4 and CC7 became dominated by styrene degradation, biosynthesis of siderophore group non-ribosomal peptides, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and biosynthesis of various plant secondary metabolites. Continuous cropping beyond 4 years significantly changed the bacterial and fungal communities in the soil around the potato crops, with significant reduction of beneficial bacteria and accumulation of harmful fungi. Correlations between DEMs and microflora biomarkers were established with strong significances. These results suggested that continuous cropping of potato crops changed their metabolism as reflected in the plant root exudates and drove rhizosphere microflora to directions less favorable to plant growth, and it needs to be well managed to assure potato yield.

Abstract
Enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation promotes anthocyanin biosynthesis in leaves, flowers and fruits of plants. However, the effects and underlying mechanisms of enhanced UV-B radiation on the accumulation of anthocyanins in the tubers of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) remain unclear. Herein, reciprocal grafting experiments were first conducted using colored and uncolored potatoes, demonstrating that the anthocyanins in potato tubers were synthesized in situ, and not transported from the leaves to the tubers. Furthermore, the enhanced UV-B radiation (2.5 kJ·m-2·d-1) on potato stems and leaves significantly increased the contents of total anthocyanin and monomeric pelargonidin and peonidin in the red-fleshed potato '21-1' tubers, compared to the untreated control. A comparative transcriptomic analysis showed that there were 2139 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under UV-B treatment in comparison to the control, including 1724 up-regulated and 415 down-regulated genes. The anthocyanin-related enzymatic genes in the tubers such as PAL, C4H, 4CL, CHS, CHI, F3H, F3'5'H, ANS, UFGTs, and GSTs were up-regulated under UV-B treatment, except for a down-regulated F3'H. A known anthocyanin-related transcription factor StbHLH1 also showed a significantly higher expression level under UV-B treatment. Moreover, six differentially expressed MYB transcription factors were remarkably correlated to almost all anthocyanin-related enzymatic genes. Additionally, a DEGs enrichment analysis suggested that jasmonic acid might be a potential UV-B signaling molecule involved in the UV-B-induced tuber biosynthesis of anthocyanin. These results indicated that enhanced UV-B radiation in potato stems and leaves induced anthocyanin accumulation in the tubers by regulating the enzymatic genes and transcription factors involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis. This study provides novel insights into the mechanisms of enhanced UV-B radiation that regulate the anthocyanin biosynthesis in potato tubers.

Abstract
Aiming to understand the nutritional impact of Moringa oleifera oil (MOO) on the quality of fried potatoes as consumed, a frying study using intermittent frying at 180 °C was conducted over 5 days, with a total heating time of 15 h, against olive (OO) and sunflower (SFO) oils. Additionally, due to MOO's higher costs, a SFO/MOO blend (80/20 w/w) was tested. With similar fat incorporation and moisture contents, potato lipid composition revealed the impact of oil oxidation over the frying time, gradually decreasing the content of unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, including vitamin E, carotenoids and ascorbic acid, and increasing the incorporation of trans fatty acids (TFAs) and volatile aldehydes. When the potatoes fried at the ninth hour of heating are compared, MOO and OO were still able to protect potato ascorbic acid better than SFO, due to the low oxidative stress imposed by their fatty-acid composition. SFO, on the contrary, with linoleic acid as the main fatty acid, and despite its higher content of vitamin E, demonstrated higher oxidative stress and increased incorporation of alkenals and alkadienals. Acrylamide content was generally low, as were the trans fatty acids formed and incorporated with frying time, with MOO fried potatoes having lower amounts of all these process contaminants. Interestingly, the blend SFO/MOO (80/20 w/w) doubled the amount of vitamin E in fried potatoes when compared with SFO alone, increased the ascorbic acid protection and reduced by half the amounts of volatile aldehydes, indicative of an efficient reduction of the oxidative status of the SFO-fried potatoes, with benefits to the consumer from a health point of view.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The dietary nutritional status of pregnant women is critical for maintaining the health of both mothers and infants. Food exchange systems have been employed in the nutritional guidance of patients in China, although their application in the dietary guidance of healthy pregnant women is quite limited. This study aimed to develop a novel food exchange system for Chinese pregnant women (NFES-CPW) and evaluate the relative validation of its application. METHODS NFES-CPW covers approximately 500 types of food from ten categories and has more elaborate food portion sizes. It established a recommendation index for guiding food selection and used energy, water content, and protein as the exchange basis to balance the supply of energy and important nutrients throughout pregnancy. Furthermore, dietitians used the NFES-CPW and traditional food exchange system to generate new recipes based on the sample recipe. There were 40 derived recipes for each of the two food exchange methods. The food consumption, energy, and key nutrients of each recipe were calculated, and the differences between the two food exchange systems were compared using the Wilcoxon rank sum test or the Chi-square test. RESULTS The results revealed that compared to those derived from traditional food exchange system, the NFES-CPW derived recipes had a better dietary structure, as evidenced by the intakes of whole-grain cereals, beans excluding soybeans, potatoes, fruits, fish, shrimp and shellfish, as well as eggs (P < 0.05), which were more conducive to reaching the recommended range of balanced dietary pagoda. After calculating energy and nutrients, although these two food exchange systems have similar effects on the dietary energy and macronutrient intake of pregnant women, the intake of micronutrients in NFES-CPW derived recipes was significantly higher than that from the traditional food exchange system, which was more conducive to meeting the dietary requirements of pregnant women. The outstanding improvement are primarily vitamin A, vitamin B2, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, calcium, iron, and iodine (P < 0.05). Moreover, when compared to recipes obtained from the traditional food exchange system, the error ranges of energy and most nutrients were significantly reduced after employing the NFES-CPW. CONCLUSIONS Therefore, NFES-CPW is an appropriate tool that adheres to Chinese dietary characteristics and can provide suitable dietary guidance to pregnant women.

Abstract
The elevated anthocyanin content of colored potatoes produces numerous health benefits in humans. However, there is a paucity of studies exploring the influence of environmental factors on anthocyanin components in colored potatoes. In our work, the Box-Behnken design was adopted to optimize anthocyanin extraction from colored potato tubers with ultrasound assistance. The response surface model was stable and reliable (R2 = 0.9775), and under optimal extraction conditions, namely an ultrasonic power of 299 W, an extraction time of 10 min, and a solid-liquid ratio of 1:30 (g/mL), the yield reached 4.33 mg/g. Furthermore, the anthocyanins of colored potato tubers grown at different altitudes were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction, the results showed that anthocyanin levels were the highest at high altitudes, whereas anthocyanins were almost undetectable at mid-altitude. Moreover, the types of anthocyanin compounds present in colored potatoes varied at different altitudes. The red clones exhibited substantial accumulation of pelargonidin across all three altitudes. In contrast, the main anthocyanins found in purple clones were malvidin, petunidin, and cyanidin. We identified the anthocyanin components with a strong correlation to the environment, thereby establishing a fundamental basis for the breeding of potato clones with high anthocyanin content.

Abstract
As the third largest global food crop, potato plays an important role in ensuring food security. However, it is particularly sensitive to high temperatures, which seriously inhibits its growth and development, thereby reducing yield and quality and severely limiting its planting area. Therefore, rapid, and high-throughput screening for high-temperature response genes is highly significant for analyzing potato high-temperature tolerance molecular mechanisms and cultivating new high-temperature-tolerant potato varieties. We screened genes that respond to high temperature by constructing a potato cDNA yeast library. After high-temperature treatment at 39 °C, the yeast library was subjected to high-throughput sequencing, and a total of 1931 heat resistance candidate genes were screened. Through GO and KEGG analysis, we found they were mainly enriched in "photosynthesis" and "response to stimuli" pathways. Subsequently, 12 randomly selected genes were validated under high temperature, drought, and salt stress using qRT-PCR. All genes were responsive to high temperature, and most were also induced by drought and salt stress. Among them, five genes ectopically expressed in yeast enhance yeast's tolerance to high temperatures. We provide numerous candidate genes for potato response to high temperature stress, laying the foundation for subsequent analysis of the molecular mechanism of potato response to high temperature.

Abstract
In this paper, a high-performance ion exclusion chromatographic (ICE) method was developed and applied for monitoring maleic hydrazide (MH) translocation in complex potato plant tissue and tuber matrices. After middle leaf uptake, most MH was trapped and dissipated in the middle leaf, and the rest was transported to other parts mainly through the phloem. Soil absorption significantly reduced the uptake efficiency of the root system, in which MH was partitioned to dissipate in root protoplasts or transfer through the xylem and persisted in the plant. Tuber uptake enabled MH to remain in the flesh and maintain stable levels under storage conditions, but during germination, MH was translocated from the flesh to the growing buds, where it dissipated through the short-day photoperiodic regime. The results demonstrated successful application of the ICE method and provided necessary insights for real-time monitoring of MH translocation behavior to effectively improve potato edible safety.

Abstract
The 2025-2030 United States Dietary Guidelines process is currently underway, and the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is examining and evaluating a list of prioritized scientific questions identified by the United States Department of Health and Human Services and the United States Department of Agriculture. One of the questions that will be evaluated is if changes should be made to USDA Dietary Patterns based on whether starchy vegetables and grains are, or can be, consumed interchangeably. These foods have historically been classified in distinct food groups. Menu modeling analyses evaluating the impact of replacing starchy vegetables with grains result in declines in key nutrients of concern. Given their unique nutrient contributions and the fact that many cultural foodways within the United States population include both starchy vegetables and grains, it is important for dietary recommendations to continue to categorize starchy vegetables and grains separately.

Abstract
Ubiquitination is a specific protein degradation and reversible post-translational modification process that can be reversed by deubiquitinase (DUBs). DUBs can hydrolyze and release ubiquitin in the substrate protein so that the substrate can avoid degradation or change its activity, and it has an impact on plant growth and development, cell cycle, abiotic stress response, and other biological processes. Transcript sequences of potato varieties "DM1-3", "Atlantic" and "Cooperation-88" downloaded from Potato Genome Resources were used for genome-wide identification of the DUB gene family using Hidden Markov Models and verified in the NCBI CD-Search tool. The characteristics of DUB genes from different potato varieties were analyzed including subcellular localization, gene structural motifs, phylogenetic tree, and sequence homology. Polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000) induced drought stress transcriptome analysis was performed on the "Atlantic", and differentially expressed genes were screened, with emphasis on the characterization of deubiquitinase. DUB genes have a complex gene structure, often with a large number of exons and alternative splicing. Their promoters contain abundant abiotic stress-responsive elements, such as 425 MYC, 325 ABRE, and 320 MYB. There are also a large number of orthologous genes in the DUBs of the three potato varieties, and these genes are often clustered in similar regions on the genome. We performed transcriptome sequencing of the potato under PEG-induced drought stress and analyzed it for the first time using the Atlantic as a reference genome. We identified a total of 6067 down-regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 4950 up-regulated DEGs under PEG-induced drought stress. We screened the expression of DUBs and observed that 120 DUBs were up-regulated where most of them functioned in the nucleus, and the interacting proteins of DUBs were also localized in the nucleus. We have comprehensively identified and analyzed potato DUBs, and the accurately aligned transcriptome data which will further deepen the understanding of DUBs involved in the regulation of osmotic stress.

Abstract
Free amino acids in potato tubers contribute to their nutritional value and processing quality. Exploring the natural variation in their accumulation in tubers across diverse genetic backgrounds is critical to potato breeding programs aiming to enhance or partition their distribution effectively. This study assessed variation in the tuber-bound free amino acids in a diversity panel of tetraploid potato clones developed and maintained by the Texas A&M Potato Breeding Program to explore their genetic basis and to obtain genomic-estimated breeding values for applied breeding purposes. Free amino acids content was evaluated in tubers of 217 tetraploid potato clones collected from Dalhart, Texas in 2019 and 2020, and Springlake, Texas in 2020. Most tuber amino acids were not affected by growing location, except histidine and proline, which were significantly lower (- 59.0%) and higher (+ 129.0%), respectively, at Springlake, Texas (a location that regularly suffers from abiotic stresses, mainly high-temperature stress). Single nucleotide polymorphism markers were used for genome-wide association studies and genomic selection of clones based on amino acid content. Most amino acids showed significant variations among potato clones and moderate to high heritabilities. Principal component analysis separated fresh from processing potato market classes based on amino acids distribution patterns. Genome-wide association studies discovered 33 QTL associated with 13 free amino acids. Genomic-estimated breeding values were calculated and are recommended for practical potato breeding applications to select parents and advance clones with the desired free amino acid content.

Abstract
Whether the consumption of different processed potatoes is detrimental to type 2 diabetes (T2D) is highly debated. This study aimed to assess the relations between potato consumption and the risk of T2D and whether the relationship was modified by the genetic predisposition to T2D. We included 174,665 participants from the UK Biobank at baseline. Potato consumption was evaluated using the 24-hour dietary questionnaire. The genetic risk score (GRS) was calculated based on 424 variants associated with T2D. After adjustment for demographic, lifestyle, and dietary factors, the consumption of total potatoes was significantly and positively associated with T2D risk [hazard ratio (HR) comparing two or more servings/day with non-consumers was 1.28 (95% CI: 1.13-1.45)]. HRs (95% CIs) of T2D for each 1-SD increment in boiled/baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, and fried potatoes were 1.02 (0.99-1.05), 1.05 (1.02-1.08), and 1.05 (1.02-1.09), respectively. There were no significant interactions between the consumption of total or different processed potatoes and overall GRS on T2D risk. Theoretically, replacing one serving/day of total potatoes with the same amount of non-starchy vegetables was related to a 12% (95% CI: 0.84-0.91) lower T2D risk. These results showed the positive associations of the consumption of total potatoes, mashed potatoes or fried potatoes and genetic risk with higher incident T2D. An unhealthy potato-based diet is associated with higher diabetes risk regardless of genetic risk.

Abstract
Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a heterogeneous collection of compounds formed during industrial processing and home cooking through a sequence of nonenzymatic glycation reactions. The modern western diet is full of heat-treated foods that contribute to AGE intake. Foods high in AGEs in the contemporary diet include processed cereal products. Due to industrialization and marketing strategies, restaurant meals are modified rather than being traditionally or conventionally cooked. Fried, grilled, baked, and boiled foods have the greatest AGE levels. Higher AGE-content foods include dry nuts, roasted walnuts, sunflower seeds, fried chicken, bacon, and beef. Animal proteins and processed plant foods contain furosine, acrylamide, heterocyclic amines, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Furosine (2-furoil-methyl-lysine) is an amino acid found in cooked meat products and other processed foods. High concentrations of carboxymethyl-lysine, carboxyethyl-lysine, and methylglyoxal-O are found in heat-treated nonvegetarian foods, peanut butter, and cereal items. Increased plasma levels of AGEs, which are harmful chemicals that lead to age-related diseases and physiological aging, diabetes, and autoimmune/inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. AGEs in the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases have been linked to individuals with diabetes mellitus who have peripheral nerves with high amounts of AGEs and diabetes has been linked to increased myelin glycation. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia can impact numerous human tissues and organs, leading to long-term difficulties in a number of systems and organs, including the cardiovascular system. Plasma AGE levels are linked to all-cause mortality in individuals with diabetes who have fatal or nonfatal coronary artery disease, such as ventricular dysfunction. High levels of tissue AGEs are independently associated with cardiac systolic dysfunction in diabetic patients with heart failure compared with diabetic patients without heart failure. It is widely recognized that AGEs and oxidative stress play a key role in the cardiovascular complications of diabetes because they both influence and are impacted by oxidative stress. All chronic illnesses involve protein, lipid, or nucleic acid modifications including crosslinked and nondegradable aggregates known as AGEs. Endogenous AGE formation or dietary AGE uptake can result in additional protein modifications and stimulation of several inflammatory signaling pathways. Many of these systems, however, require additional explanation because they are not entirely obvious. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding dietary sources of AGEs and metabolism-related complications associated with AGEs.

Abstract
FAR1-RELATED SEQUENCE (FRS) transcription factors are generated by transposases and play vital roles in plant growth and development, light signaling transduction, phytohormone response, and stress resistance. FRSs have been described in various plant species. However, FRS family members and their functions remain poorly understood in vegetative crops such as potato (Solanum tuberosum, St). In the present study, 20 putative StFRS proteins were identified in potato via genome-wide analysis. They were non-randomly localized to eight chromosomes and phylogenetic analysis classified them into six subgroups along with FRS proteins from Arabidopsis and tomato. Conserved protein motif, protein domain, and gene structure analyses supported the evolutionary relationships among the FRS proteins. Analysis of the cis-acting elements in the promoters and the expression profiles of StFRSs in various plant tissues and under different stress treatments revealed the spatiotemporal expression patterns and the potential roles of StFRSs in phytohormonal and stress responses. StFRSs were differentially expressed in the cultivar "Xisen 6", which is exposed to a variety of stresses. Hence, these genes may be critical in regulating abiotic stress. Elucidating the StFRS functions will lay theoretical and empirical foundations for the molecular breeding of potato varieties with high light use efficiency and stress resistance.

Abstract
Potato is the world's fourth largest food crop. Due to limited arable land and an ever-increasing demand for food from a growing population, it is critical to increase crop yields on existing acreage. Soil salinization is an increasing problem that dramatically impacts crop yields and restricts the growing area of potato. One possible solution to this problem is the development of salt-tolerant transgenic potato cultivars. In this work, we review the current potato planting distribution and the ways in which it overlaps with salinized land, in addition to covering the development and utilization of potato salt-tolerant cultivars. We also provide an overview of the current progress toward identifying potato salt tolerance genes and how they may be deployed to overcome the current challenges facing potato growers.

Abstract
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) has gradually become a stable food worldwide since it can be a practical nutritional supplement and antioxidant as well as an energy provider for human beings. Financially and nutritionally, the cultivation and utility of potatoes is worthy of attention from the world. Exploring the functionality and maximizing the utilization of its component parts as well as developing new products based on the potato is still an ongoing issue. To maximize the benefits of potato and induce new high-value products while avoiding unfavorable properties of the crop has been a growing trend in food and medical areas. This review intends to summarize the factors that influence changes in the key functional components of potatoes and to discuss the focus of referenced literature which may require further research efforts. Next, it summarizes the application of the latest commercial products and potential value of components existing in potato. In particular, there are several main tasks for future potato research: preparing starchy foods for special groups of people and developing fiber-rich products to supply dietary fiber intake, manufacturing bio-friendly and specific design films/coatings in the packaging industry, extracting bioactive proteins and potato protease inhibitors with high biological activity, and continuing to build and examine the health benefits of new commercial products based on potato protein. Notably, preservation methods play a key role in the phytochemical content left in foods, and potato performs superiorly to many common vegetables when meeting the demands of daily mineral intake and alleviating mineral deficiencies.

Abstract
Due to the presence of the steroidal glycoalkaloid solanine, the potato was chosen as Germany's poisonous plant of the year 2022. Steroidal glycoalkaloids are secondary plant metabolites which have been reported to induce toxic as well as beneficial health effects. Nevertheless, data regarding occurrence, toxicokinetics, and metabolism of steroidal glycoalkaloids is scarce, and substantially more research is required for a proper risk assessment. Therefore, the intestinal metabolism of solanine, chaconine, solasonine, solamargine, and tomatine was investigated using the ex vivo pig cecum model. All steroidal glycoalkaloids were degraded by the porcine intestinal microbiota, releasing the respective aglycon. Furthermore, the hydrolysis rate was strongly dependent on the linked carbohydrate side chain. Solanine and solasonine, which are linked to a solatriose, were metabolized significantly faster than the chaconine and solamargin, which are linked to a chacotriose. In addition, stepwise cleavage of the carbohydrate side chain and the formation of β- and γ-intermediates were detected by HPLC-HRMS. The results provide valuable insights into the intestinal metabolism of selected steroidal glycoalkaloids and help to reduce uncertainties and improve risk assessment.

Abstract
Potatoes are a dietary staple consumed by a significant portion of the world, providing valuable carbohydrates and vitamins. However, most commercially produced potatoes have a high content of highly branched amylopectin starch, which generally results in a high glycemic index (GI). Consumption of foods with high levels of amylopectin elicit a rapid spike in blood glucose levels, which is undesirable for individuals who are pre-diabetic, diabetic, or obese. Some cultivars of potatoes with lower amylopectin levels have previously been identified and are commercially available in niche markets in some countries, but they are relatively unavailable in the United States and Latin America. The high glycemic index of widely available potatoes presents a problematic "consumer's dilemma" for individuals and families that may not be able to afford a better-balanced, more favorable diet. Some native communities in the Andes (Bolivia, Chile, and Peru) reportedly embrace a tradition of providing low glycemic tubers to people with obesity or diabetes to help people mitigate what is now understood as the negative effects of high blood sugar and obesity. These cultivars are not widely available on a global market. This study examines 60 potato cultivars to identify potatoes with low amylopectin. Three independent analyses of potato starch were used: microscopic examination of granule structure, water absorption, and spectrophotometric analysis of iodine complexes to identify potato cultivars with low amylopectin Differences among cultivars tested were detected by all three types of analyses. The most promising cultivars are Huckleberry Gold, Muru, Multa, Green Mountain, and an October Blue x Colorado Rose cross. Further work is necessary to document the ability of these low amylopectin cultivars to reduce blood glucose spike levels in human subjects.

Abstract
Potato crop, currently, is the staple food crop of about 1.3 billion global population. Potato is attaining even more admiration globally day by day owing to its public acceptability. However, potato sustainable production is distinctly challenged by multiple factors like diseases, pests and climate change etc. Among diseases, common scab is one of the prime threats to potato crop due to its soil-borne nature and versatility in phytotoxins' secretion. Common scab is caused multiple number of phytopathogenic streptomyces strains. Despite extensive research programs, researchers are still unable to identify a significant solution to this threat that is proliferating exceptional rate across the globe. To develop feasible remedies, adequate information regarding host-pathogen interaction should be available. This review possesses insights on existing pathogenic species, the evolution of novel pathogenic streptomyces spp. and phytotoxins produced by the pathogenic strains. Furthermore, which type of physiological, biochemical and genetic activities occur during pathogen's infestation of the host are also canvassed.

Abstract
Introduction Colored potatoes comprise many bioactive compounds that potentially support human health. Polyphenols present in them have associated therapeutic benefits like antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties. Method The current study aimed to explore the effects of different blanching methods (steam blanching, hot water blanching, and microwave-assisted blanching) on the phytochemical and structural aspects of PP-1901 and Lady Rosetta (LR) potato varieties. Changes in the antioxidant activity, color, total ascorbic acid, phenolic, and flavonoid content were based on the variations in parameters including temperature (blanching using hot water and steam) and capacity 100- 900 W (blanching using microwave). Results For both PP-1901 and LR varieties, all the blanching methods led to a significant reduction in residual peroxidase activity, as well as affecting their color. The preservation of bioactive substances exhibited a microwave steam>hot water blanching trend. Blanching significantly increased the antioxidant activity of all the samples. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that phytocompounds were retained to their maximum in microwave-blanched samples, especially at 300 W. The type of blanching method significantly affected the thermal properties of potatoes by disrupting the ordered structure of the matrix. Discussion Microwaves at 300 W can be used as a novel and suitable alternative technique for blanching potatoes, which successfully retained the original quality of it in comparison to steam and hot water blanching.

Abstract
Phytophthora infestans poses a serious threat to potato production, storage, and processing. Understanding plant immunity triggered by fungal elicitors is important for the effective control of plant diseases. However, the role of the potato stress response to Fusarium toxin deoxynivalenol (DON)-induced stress is still not fully understood. In this study, the metabolites of DON-treated potato tubers were studied for four time intervals using UPLC-MS/MS. We identified 676 metabolites, and differential accumulation metabolite analysis showed that alkaloids, phenolic acids, and flavonoids were the major differential metabolites that directly determined defense response. Transcriptome data showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly enriched in phenylpropane and flavonoid metabolic pathways. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified many hub genes, some of which modulate plant immune responses. This study is important for understanding the metabolic changes, transcriptional regulation, and physiological responses of active and signaling substances during DON induction, and it will help to design defense strategies against Phytophthora infestans in potato.

Abstract
The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a destructive pest of the cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum. Members of this species are well-suited to agricultural habitats because of a suite of physiological adaptations and their ability to evolve resistance to multiple insecticides. Recently, a novel double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) insecticide (Calantha, active ingredient ledprona) has been demonstrated as an effective tool to manage Colorado potato beetle populations through RNA interference (RNAi). Previous studies have demonstrated the lethality of the high doses of ledprona but had not assessed possible effects of low doses that may happen due to product degradation in the environment, incomplete spray coverage, and foliage growth. Exposure of fourth instar larvae to low concentrations of ledprona interfered with their pupation. Exposure of adults significantly reduced their mobility after seven days, as well as their fertility. Reproductive effects were stronger in females, especially when exposed before reaching sexual maturity. The observed effects of low doses of ledprona may aid in the overall management of Colorado potato beetles by reducing the size of resident populations, inhibiting beetle movement within and between fields, and reducing the population growth rate.

Abstract
Potatoes are a staple food with high antioxidant properties that can positively affect population health. The beneficial effects of potatoes have been attributed to tuber quality. However, the tuber quality related researches at genetic levels are very few. Sexual hybridization is a powerful strategy for producing new and valuable genotypes with high quality. In this study, 42 breeding potato genotypes in Iran were selected based on appearance characteristics such as shape, size, color, eyes of tubers, and tuber yield and marketability. The tubers were evaluated for their nutritional value and properties, viz. phenolic content, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins, sugars, proteins, and antioxidant activity. Potato tubers with white flesh and colored skin had significantly higher levels of ascorbic acid and total sugar. The result showed that higher phenolic, flavonoid, carotenoid, protein concentration, and antioxidant activity were noted in yellow-fleshed. Burren (yellow-fleshed) tubers had more antioxidant capacity in comparison to genotypes and cultivars, which did not differ significantly with genotypes 58, 68, 67 (light yellow), 26, 22, and 12 (white). The highest correlation coefficients in antioxidant compounds were related to total phenol content and FRAP, suggesting that phenolics might be crucial predictors of antioxidant activities. The concentration of antioxidant compounds in the breeding genotypes was higher than in some commercial cultivars, and higher antioxidant compounds content and activity were detected in yellow-fleshed cultivars. Based on current results, understanding the relationship between antioxidant compounds and the antioxidant activity of potatoes could be very helpful in potato breeding projects.

Abstract
The potato is a crop of global importance for the food industry. This is why effective protection against pathogens is so important. Fungi as potato pathogens are responsible for plant diseases and a significant reduction in yields, as well as for the formation of mycotoxins. This study focuses on the effect of three natural biocides, yeast Metschnikowia pulcherrima, lactic acid bacteria Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, and aqueous garlic extract, on the improvement of the physiology of planted potato tubers and the reduction in mycotoxin formation. The secondary metabolites produced by the fungal pathogens of genera Fusarium, Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Rhizoctonia, and Phoma in the presence of these biocontrol agents were compared to profiles obtained from contaminated potatoes. Analysis of liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry data showed the presence of 68 secondary metabolites, including the mycotoxins: alternariol, alternariol methyl ether, altertoxin-I, aurofusarin, beauvericin, diacetoxyscirpenol, enniatin B, and sterigmatocystin. The studies showed that the applied biocontrol agents had a positive effect on the physiological parameters of potatoes (including root growth, stem growth, gas exchange, and chlorophyll content index) and on the reduction in the production of mycotoxins and other secondary metabolites by Fusarium, Alternaria, and Phoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between potato intake and risk of cardiovascular diseases is unknown. This study aimed to examine the association between potatoes intake and mortality from stroke and coronary heart disease among Japanese. METHODS The study included 74,750 participants of the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study, aged 40-79, who were initially free of cardiovascular diseases or cancer at baseline (1988-1990) and provided information on their potato intake. Hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by fitting a Cox proportional hazards model according to the frequency of potatoes intake (0, 0.4, 1.5, 3.5 and 7 servings per week) adjusting for geographic location, age, body mass index, drinking status, smoking status, perceived mental stress, education level, walking time, dietary intakes of total energy, meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, dairy products, cakes, and salt. RESULTS Over a median of 19.2 years of follow-up, 4908 deaths from cardiovascular diseases were identified: 1019 from coronary heart diseases and 2153 from strokes (738 ischemic strokes and 495 hemorrhagic strokes). After adjustment for potential confounding factors, the hazard ratio of mortality from cardiovascular diseases for daily potato intake compared with no potato intake was 0.82 (95% confidence interval: 0.70, 0.95) among women, and 1.01 (0.88, 1.16) among men. Among women, the multivariable hazard ratios were 0.67 (0.48, 0.96) for coronary heart disease, 0.83 (0.66-1.05) for total stroke, 0.70 (0.43-1.15) for hemorrhagic stroke, and 0.75 (0.49-1.13) for ischemic stroke. CONCLUSION We found an inverse association of potato intake with mortality from total cardiovascular diseases, especially that from coronary heart disease, among Japanese women. To our knowledge, this is the first report to show an inverse association between potato intake and total cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Potatoes with different flesh colours contain health-promoting compounds, i.e., hydroxycinnamic acids, which vary in content and stability during thermal processing. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the technological stages of the production of French fries obtained from potatoes with different flesh colours on the content of selected hydroxycinnamic acids, as well as the stability of these acids, their percentage in sum of acids, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH) in semi-products and ready-to-eat products. During the production of French fries, samples of unpeeled, peeled, cut, blanched, pre-dried and fried potatoes were collected. After peeling, coloured potatoes, especially purple ones, had more hydroxycinnamic (5-CQA, 4-CQA, 3-CQA and CA) acids remaining in the flesh than in the flesh of the light-yellow variety. The greatest losses of the determined hydroxycinnamic acids, regardless of the given potato's variety, were caused by the stage of pre-drying (about 91%) and frying (about 97%). The French fries obtained from the potatoes with coloured flesh, especially those with purple flesh, had the highest amount of stable 5-CQA and 4-CQA acids as well as 3-CQA acid, already absent in light-yellow French fries. The least stable acid was CA acid, which was not found in any of the ready snacks.

Abstract
Potatoes are one of the most important sources of nutrients worldwide, but excessive doses of industrial fertilizers are usually used to achieve higher yields. Soil biostimulants are an increasingly used alternative for reducing fertilizer doses and growing healthy agricultural products. In this study, we examined the effects of humic substances (Agriful) and beneficial bacteria (Groundfix) based biostimulants applied by dripping irrigation on the yield and quality of potato tubers in comparison with the conventional N fertilization system. The small trail field experiment was founded in the growing season of 2020 in the Botanical Garden of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. The highest tubers yield had the combination of biostimulants and N fertilizer – 195.16% above to control. Simultaneously this combination reached an increase in refractometric dry matter content, starch content – 3.6%, and vitamin C content – 20% increase above to control. The Groundfix variant had the highest antioxidant activity with a 16.2% difference compared to the conventional nitrogen fertilization variant. These results show the positive effect of applied biostimulants on the yield and quality of cultivated potatoes.

Abstract
Under cold conditions, StICE1 enhances plant cold tolerance by upregulating StLTI6A expression to maintain the cell membrane stability. Cold stress affects potato plants growth and development, crop productivity and quality. The ICE-CBF-COR regulatory cascade is the well-known pathway in response to cold stress in plants. ICE1, as a MYC-like bHLH transcription factor, can regulate the expressions of CBFs. However, whether ICE1 could regulate other genes still need to be explored. Our results showed that overexpressing ICE1 from potato in Arabidopsis thaliana could enhance plant cold tolerance. Under cold stress, overexpressed StICE1 in plants improved the stability of cell membrane, enhanced scavenging capacity of reactive oxygen species and increased expression levels of CBFs and COR genes. Furthermore, StICE1 could bind to the promoter of StLTI6A gene, which could maintain the stability of the cell membrane, to upregulate StLTI6A expression under cold conditions. Our findings revealed that StICE1 could directly regulate StLTI6A, CBF and COR genes expression to response to cold stress.

Abstract
This paper is the first to report the soluble carbohydrate content at harvest for eight Transylvanian potato cultivars: Christian, Cumidava, Kronstadt, Riviera, Roclas, Rustic, Tampa and Zamolxis. The aim of this study is to explore the soluble carbohydrate composition of the above-mentioned cultivars, since such quantitative information is important for breeding programs, consumers and processing units. High performance liquid chromatography was used for analysis, separations being achieved using a Prominence Shimadzu system with a refractive index detector, under isocratic conditions with a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile: water (80:20%) delivered at 1 mL/min; baseline separations of the target analytes were accomplished with an EC 250/4 Nucleodur 100-5 NH2 RP column in less than 10 min. The carbohydrate concentrations were found to range from 24.03 mg/100 g (Zamolxis) to 76.58 mg/100 g (Riviera) for fructose, while the corresponding range was from 52.78 mg/100 g (Zamolxis) to 232.97 mg/100 g (Riviera) for glucose and from 238.41 mg/100 g (Zamolxis) to 378.45 (Cumidava) for sucrose. Chromatographic data were then subjected to chemometric analysis; the association of these complementary techniques allowed a fast selection of cultivars with low-reducing carbohydrate content for food processing purposes-the cultivars Zamolxis, Kronstadt, Christian and Roclas were outlined exhibiting both the lowest reducing carbohydrate content and the lowest sucrose content.

Abstract
Sprouting negatively affects the quality of stored potato tubers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that control this process is important for the development of potato varieties with desired sprouting characteristics. Serine/threonine protein phosphatase type 2A (PP2A) has been implicated in several developmental programs and stress responses in plants. PP2A comprises a catalytic (PP2Ac), a scaffolding (A), and a regulatory (B) subunit. In cultivated potato, six PP2Ac isoforms were identified, named StPP2Ac1, 2a, 2b, 3, 4, and 5. In this study we evaluated the sprouting behavior of potato tubers overexpressing the catalytic subunit 2b (StPP2Ac2b-OE). The onset of sprouting and initial sprout elongation is significantly delayed in StPP2Ac2b-OE tubers; however, sprout growth is accelerated during the late stages of development, due to a high degree of branching. StPP2Ac2b-OE tubers also exhibit a pronounced loss of apical dominance. These developmental characteristics are accompanied by changes in carbohydrate metabolism and response to gibberellic acid, and a differential balance between abscisic acid, gibberellic acid, cytokinins, and auxin. Overexpression of StPP2Ac2b alters the source-sink balance, increasing the source capacity of the tuber, and the sink strength of the sprout to support its accelerated growth.

Abstract
Economic value of the global potato harvest is impacted by sprouting during storage. We examined how sprouting might be reduced or eliminated using citral, a naturally occurring component in citrus fruit peel. The current study integrated both loading and sustained release of citral using emulsification-based interfacial synthesis of hollow MIL-88A. The structural properties and compositions of MIL-88A and hollow MIL-88A were confirmed using SEM, EDS, and XRD. BET analysis showed a surface area of 30.36 m2 g-1, pore volume of 0.21 cm3 g-1, and an average pore radius of 13.56 nm for hollow MIL-88A. Citral was successfully loaded into 10 g of MIL-88A and hollow MIL-88A, with a total citral load of 0.21 cm3 and 1.82 cm3, respectively. The citral-loaded hollow MIL-88A induced a sustained release of citral, which effectively inhibited the sprouting, leading to higher starch content by 41%, lower weight losses, reducing sugar content, α-Amylase, β-amylase, and starch phosphorylase activities by 75%, 55%, 34%, 31%, and 43%, respectively. The citral-loaded hollow MIL-88A might inhibit sprouting by suppressing gibberellin and indole-3-acetic acid while maintaining abscisic acid.

Abstract
Potatoes play an important role in ensuring food security. During the COVID-19 epidemic, consumption of processed potato products decreased, and consumption of fresh potatoes increased. China is the world's largest potato producer with more than 4.81 million hectares of area under potato production and 90.32 million metric tonnes of potatoes produced in 2018. This accounts for 27.36% of the world's planting area and 24.53% of the world's potato production. The proportion of potatoes processed in China was about 12% in 2017, mostly dominated by starch production. However, the recent policy of the Chinese government to popularise potato as a staple food has created new markets for processed potato products other than starch. A very few reports have analysed these future trends of the rapidly growing Chinese potato processing industry and its impact within and outside China. This paper provides an overview of the latest developments with a focus on processed potato products such as potato chips, French fries and dehydrated potatoes, and also, due to the unique Chinese diet culture, it highlights the need for more scientific research dedicated towards the development of novel potato-based healthy foods.

Abstract
The nutritional enhancement of potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.,) is highly critical. As it is considered a worldwide basic vegetarian nutrition to maintain health. S. tuberosum is one of the foremost staples and the world's fourth-largest food crop. In advance, its need is increasing because of its high-industrial value and population blast. To improve both potato growth and behavior under harsh environmental conditions, we produced transgenic potato plants overexpressing either VvNHX (a sodium proton antiporter from Vitis vinifera), VvCLC (a chloride channel from Vitis vinifera), or both. Control and transgenic plants were grown in greenhouse and field under non-stressed conditions for 85 days in order to characterize their phenotype and evaluate their agronomical performance. To this aim, the evaluation of plant growth parameters, tuber yields and characteristics (calibers, eye number and color), the chemical composition of tubers, was conducted and compared between the different lines. The obtained results showed that transgenic plants displayed an improved growth (flowering precocity, gain of vigor and better vegetative growth) along with enhanced tuber yields and quality (increased protein and starch contents). Our findings provide then insight into the role played by the VvNHX antiport and the VvCLC channel and a greater understanding of the effect of their overexpression in potato plants.

Abstract
Several medicinal plants have the potential to be a promising alternative pharmacological therapy for a variety of human illnesses. Many insects, including mosquitoes, are important vectors of deadly pathogens and parasites, which in the world's growing human and animal populations can cause serious epidemics and pandemics. Medicinal plants continue to provide a large library of phytochemicals, which can be used to replace chemically synthesized insecticides, and utilization of herbal product-based insecticides is one of the best and safest alternatives for mosquito control. Identifying new effective phyto-derived insecticides is important to counter increasing insect resistance to synthetic compounds and provide a safer environment. Solanum genus (Solanaceae family or nightshades) comprises more than 2500 species, which are widely used as food and traditional medicine. All research publications on insecticidal properties of Solanaceae plants and their phytoconstituents against mosquitoes and other insects published up to July 2020 were systematically analyzed through PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, EBSCO, Europe PMC, and Google Scholar databases, with focus on species containing active phytoconstituents that are biodegradable and environmentally safe. The current state of knowledge on larvicidal plants of Solanum species, type of extracts, target insect species, type of effects, name of inhibiting bioactive compounds, and their lethal doses (LC50 and LC90) were reviewed in this study. These studies provide valuable information about the activity of various species of Solanum and their phytochemical diversity, as well as a roadmap for optimizing select compounds for botanical repellents against a variety of vectors that cause debilitating and life-threatening human diseases.

Abstract
Background Potato, a vegetable crop grown worldwide, has many uses, a short growth period, a large market demand and high economic benefits. The loss of potato seediness due to traditional potato growing methods is becoming increasingly evident, and research on new ways of growing potatoes is particularly important. Bud planting technology has the advantages of more reproduction, faster growth, and simplified maintenance of crop plants under cultivation. Methods In this study, a bud planting method was adopted for the cultivation of potato seedlings. Specifically, we assessed different types of treatments for the production of high-quality buds and seedlings of potato. A total of four disease-free potato varieties (Fujin, Youjin, Zhongshu 4, and Feiwuruita) were selected, potato buds with three different lengths (3 cm, 5 cm, and 7 cm) were considered the T1, T2, and T3 treatments, and terminal buds, middle buds, and tail buds were used as the T4, T5, and T6 treatments. A nutrient pot experiment was performed following a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates and a natural control (CK) treatment. Cultivation was performed with the common horticultural practices of weeding and hoeing applied as needed. The photosynthetic indices, physiological indices, growth indices and quality of potato seedlings and quality of potato buds were measured at two-week intervals, and yield indices were measured when the final crop was harvested 14 weeks after planting. Results and Conclusions Cultivation of seedlings from potato buds of different lengths increased the reproduction coefficient and reduced the number of seed potatoes needed for cultivation. All morphological, physiological, and yield indices showed positive trends. A potato bud length of 7 cm was optimal for raising seedlings. Moreover, buds located at the terminal of the potato yielded seedlings with the best quality. In conclusion, we recommend that our proven bud planting technique be adopted at the commercial level, which could support good crop production with maximum yield.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is one of the most notorious pests of the potato, Solanum tuberosum. Potato beetles are capable of developing resistance to various insecticides in relatively few generations. Novel and effective means of controlling Colorado potato beetle populations are constantly required to protect potato crops and prevent loss of yield. The knockdown of gene function through ribonucleic acid interference has been demonstrated in Colorado potato beetles, suggesting the use of this technology as a means of beetle management. A novel double-stranded RNA-based insecticide with the active ingredient, ledprona, has been tested in variable dose laboratory bioassays, followed by field studies. RESULTS Exposure to ledprona resulted in both increased beetle mortality and decreased foliage consumption in all four instars and adult beetles. Effects decreased from earlier to later life stages. No ovicidal activity was detected. Onset of mortality was slower compared with existing chemical insecticides. Nevertheless, field applications of formulated ledprona to potato plots resulted in their protection comparable with that provided by spinosad and chlorantraniliprole. CONCLUSION Based on the results of this study, formulated ledprona has attributes to become a useful tool in controlling Colorado potato beetle populations that is likely to be a good fit in integrated pest management protocols. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Plant-derived proteins have received considerable attention as an alternative to animal-based proteins and are now frequently used in both plant-based diets and sports nutrition products. However, little information is available on the anabolic properties of potato-derived protein. This study compares muscle protein synthesis rates after the ingestion of 30 g potato protein versus 30 g milk protein at rest and during recovery from a single bout of resistance exercise in healthy, young males. METHODS In a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group design, 24 healthy young males (24 ± 4 yr) received primed continuous l -[ ring - 13 C 6 ]-phenylalanine infusions while ingesting 30 g potato-derived protein or 30 g milk protein after a single bout of unilateral resistance exercise. Blood and muscle biopsies were collected for 5 h after protein ingestion to assess postprandial plasma amino acid profiles and mixed muscle protein synthesis rates at rest and during recovery from exercise. RESULTS Ingestion of both potato and milk protein increased mixed muscle protein synthesis rates when compared with basal postabsorptive values (from 0.020% ± 0.011% to 0.053% ± 0.017%·h -1 and from 0.021% ± 0.014% to 0.050% ± 0.012%·h -1 , respectively; P < 0.001), with no differences between treatments ( P = 0.54). In the exercised leg, mixed muscle protein synthesis rates increased to 0.069% ± 0.019% and 0.064% ± 0.015%·h -1 after ingesting potato and milk protein, respectively ( P < 0.001), with no differences between treatments ( P = 0.52). The muscle protein synthetic response was greater in the exercised compared with the resting leg ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Ingestion of 30 g potato protein concentrate increases muscle protein synthesis rates at rest and during recovery from exercise in healthy, young males. Muscle protein synthesis rates after the ingestion of 30 g potato protein do not differ from rates observed after ingesting an equivalent amount of milk protein.
