Abstract
Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is a key determining agent in the pathophysiology of clinical organ dysfunction. It is characterized by an aseptic local inflammatory reaction due to a decrease in blood supply, hence deprivation of dependent oxygen and nutrients. In instances of liver transplantation, this injury may have irreversible implications, resulting in eventual organ rejection. The deterioration associated with IRI is affected by the hepatic health status and various factors such as alterations in metabolism, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The primary cause of inflammation is the initial immune response of pro-inflammatory cytokines, while Kupffer cells (KFCs) and neutrophil-produced chemokines also play a significant role. Upon reperfusion, the activation of inflammatory responses can elicit further cellular damage and organ dysfunction. This review discusses the interplay between chemokines, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and other inflammatory mediators that contribute to the damage to hepatocytes and liver failure in rats following IR. Furthermore, it delves into the impact of anti-inflammatory therapies in safeguarding against liver failure and hepatocellular damage in rats following IR. This review investigates the correlation between cytokine factors and liver dysfunction via examining databases, such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB), and Research Gate.

Abstract
The antioxidant activity of tea leaves extract is a widely researched topic. Tea leaves, particularly those from the Camellia sinensis Linn plant, have garnered attention due to their potential health benefits attributed to their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are compounds that can neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, which can damage cells and contribute to various health issues, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and aging. In this research, the matured tea leaves which has been considered as agricultural waste in Moulovibazar area of Bangladesh have been investigated as a potential source of antioxidant. Methanol was used as solvent for the extraction of antioxidant. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl) scavenging free radical assay method was used to assess the antioxidant activity of the extracts and ascorbic acid was used as positive control. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis method was conducted on this extract to investigate the principal components. The half inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of methanol extract and ascorbic acid were found to be 69.51 μg/mL and 10.70 μg/mL, respectively. Caffeine is the main compound (74.47%) among the eight bioactive compounds was identify and quantified by GC-MS.

Abstract
Palm sap sugar is a sweetener which is made from the sap or nectar collected from different varieties/species of palm trees. It has huge scope as an alternative sweetener in Indian market. It is a natural alternative to unhealthy cane sugar and is more beneficial for farmers as well. Some of its characteristic features are low GI value and its macro (Glucose: 0.49-86.90 g/100 ml, Fructose: 0.26-1.61, Sucrose: 5.30-27.00 g/100 ml) and micro (K: 65.28-1326.0, Na: 2.85-117.5, Mg: 0.54-31.00, Ca: 0.24-79.00 mg/100 ml) nutritional content. Palm sugar also has impact on colour, aroma and taste profile of the final product. The taste, sensory profile and nutritional attributes of palm sugar vary on the basis of its species, region of growth and climatic conditions. At present, traditional processing of palm sap leads to lower yield and higher expenses. There is huge potential in the field of development in processing techniques (Traditional processing, spray drying, membrane technology, and vacuum drying) to optimize the production of palm sugar. Palm sugar and other products from different parts of palm can be used to make a variety of other value-added products like toffees, chocolates, cola, toddy wine, candy, and palm vinegar etc. The purpose of this review paper is to summarise the composition of palm sap, distinctive qualities of the extracted sap, various production procedures, nutritional and physico-chemical properties of palm sugar, and the development of functional foods using palm sugar.

Abstract
AIMS Nephrotoxicity is the hallmark of anti-neoplastic drug metabolism that causes oxidative stress. External chemical agents and prescription drugs release copious amounts of free radicals originating from molecular oxidation and unless sustainably scavenged, they stimulate membrane lipid peroxidation and disruption of the host antioxidant mechanisms. This review aims to provide a comprehensive collection of potential cytoprotective remedies in surmounting the most difficult aspect of cancer therapy as well as preventing renal oxidative stress by other means. MATERIALS AND METHODS Over 400 published research and review articles spanning several decades were scrutinised to obtain the relevant data which is presented in 3 categories; sources, mechanisms, and mitigation of renal oxidative stress. KEY-FINDINGS Drug and chemical-induced nephrotoxicity commonly manifests as chronic or acute kidney disease, nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis. Renal replacement therapy requirements and mortalities from end-stage renal disease are set to rapidly increase in the next decade for which 43 different cytoprotective compounds which have the capability to suppress experimental nephrotoxicity are described. SIGNIFICANCE The renal system performs essential homeostatic functions that play a significant role in eliminating toxicants, and its accumulation and recurrence in nephric tissues results in tubular degeneration and subsequent renal impairment. Global statistics of the latest chronic kidney disease prevalence is 13.4 % while the end-stage kidney disease requiring renal replacement therapy is 4-7 million per annum. The remedial compounds discussed herein had proven efficacy against nephrotoxicity manifested consequent to impaired antioxidant mechanisms in preclinical models produced by renal oxidative stress activators.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Metal nanomaterials, such as silver and copper, are often incorporated into commercial textiles to take advantage of their Antibacterial and antiviral properties. The goal of this study was to identify the most parsimonious method for the synthesis of silver, copper, or silver/copper bimetallic treated textiles. To accomplish this eight different methods were employed to synthesize silver, copper, and silver/copper functionalized cotton batting textiles. Using silver and copper nitrate as precursors, different reagents were used to initiate/catalyze the deposition of metal, including: (1) no additive, (2) sodium bicarbonate, (3) green tea, (4) sodium hydroxide, (5) ammonia, (6, 7) sodium hydroxide/ammonia at a 1:2 and 1:4 ratio, and (8) sodium borohydride. The use of sodium bicarbonate as a reagent to reduce silver onto cotton has not been used previously in literature and was compared to established methods. All synthesis methods were performed at 80 °C for one hour following textile addition to the solutions. The products were characterized by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis for quantitative determination of the metal content and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis for silver and copper speciation on the textile. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and size distribution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used to further characterize the products of the sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide, and sodium borohydride synthesis methods following ashing of the textile. For the silver treatment methods (1 mM Ag +), sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide resulted in the highest amounts of silver on the textile (8900 mg Ag/kg textile and 7600 mg Ag/kg textile) and for copper treatment (1 mM Cu +) the sodium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide/ammonium hydroxide resulted in the highest amounts of copper on the textile (3800 mg Ag/kg textile and 2500 mg Ag/kg textile). Formation of copper oxide was dependent on the pH of the solution, with 4 mM ammonia and other high pH solutions resulting in majority of the copper on the textile existing as copper oxide, with smaller amounts of ionic-bound copper. The identified parsimonious methods will lend themselves to the efficient manufacturing of antibacterial and antiviral textiles, or the development of multifunctionalized smart textiles. Abstract
ABSTRACT Salmonella is the leading cause of bacterial foodborne zoonoses in humans. Thus, the development of strategies to control bacterial pathogens in poultry is essential. Peanut skins, a considerable waste by-product of the peanut industry is discarded and of little economic value. However, peanut skins contain identified polyphenolic compounds that have antimicrobial properties. Hence, we aim to investigate the use of peanut skins as an antibacterial feed additive in the diets of broilers to prevent the proliferation of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE). One hundred sixty male hatchlings (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to (i) peanut skin diet without SE inoculation (PS); (ii) peanut skin diet and SE inoculation (PSSE); (iii) control diet without SE inoculation (CON); and (iv) control diet with SE inoculation (CONSE). Feed intake and body weights were determined at weeks 0 and 5. On days 10 and 24 posthatch, three birds per pen (24 total) from each treatment group were euthanized, and the liver, spleen, small intestine, and ceca were collected. The weights of the liver, spleen, and ceca were recorded. Organ invasion was determined by counting SE colonies. Each pen served as an experimental unit and was analyzed by using a t test. Performance data were analyzed in a completely randomized design by using a general linear mixed model to evaluate differences. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in weekly average pen body weight, total feed consumption, bird weight gain, and feed conversion ratio between the treatment groups. There were no significant differences in SE CFU per gram for fecal, litter, or feed between the treatment groups CONSE and PSSE. However, for both fecal and litter, the PSSE treatment group tended (P ≤ 0.1) to have a lower Salmonella CFU per gram compared with the CONSE treatment group. The results indicate that peanut skins may have potential application as an antimicrobial feed additive to reduce the transmission or proliferation of SE in poultry environments or flocks. HIGHLIGHTS

Abstract
This study aims at investigating the quality of drinking water and evaluating the non-carcinogenic risk of fluoride and nitrate ions in drinking water, and fluoride in tea in Zarrin Dasht, Iran. We focus on tea since it is the most popular drink among Iranian people and in the study region. We collected and analyzed 23 drinking water samples and 23 tea samples from different locations in the study region. Based on the water quality index, the consumed drinking water does not have a good quality in most Zarrin Dasht areas. Accordingly, the water quality index (WQI) is poor and very poor in 70% and 13% of the water samples, respectively. The average fluoride concentration of the tea samples is 2.71 mg/L. The mean values of Fluoride Hazard Index (HIfluoride) are 3.77, 2.77, and 2.33 for children, teenagers, and adults, respectively, which are higher than the safe limit of 1. The Nitrate Hazard Index (HInitrate) is higher than the safe limit of 1 in 8.7% of the samples. The results of the Monte Carlo simulation demonstrate that HIfluoride and HInitrate are higher than 1 in all the groups, except for adults. According to the results of the sensitivity analysis, ingestion rate and body weight have a large effect on HIfluoride and HInitrate, but body weight is inversely associated with sensitivity. According to the Piper diagram, saline water is the predominant type in Zarrin Dasht. Besides, the results of the principal component analysis (PCA) show a high correlation between fluoride and pH, which could be related to the effect of pH on fluoride dissolution and ion exchange. Therefore, appropriate measures are recommended to be taken in order to reduce the amount of fluoride in the drinking water resources of this region. Reduction of tea consumption can also be considered an important factor in decreasing the amount of fluoride intake.

Abstract
The concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, and lead in infusion tea bags of Camellia sinensis (tea), Pimpinella anisum (anise), Matricaria recutita (chamomile), Peumus boldus (boldo), and Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) for four commercial brands sold in Tacna, Peru, to compare these concentrations with international standards. The moderate level of arsenic obtained for C. sinensis (0.294 mg kg-1) exceeded the Codex Alimentarius standard for three of the four analyzed brands, while the level of arsenic in P. boldus (0.220 mg kg-1) exceeded the same standard and the Mercado Común del Sur (MERCOSUR) parameters for only one brand. The moderate level of cadmium outlined in the Codex Alimentarius and by the World Health Organization (WHO) was exceeded by two infusion tea bag brands of M. recutita (0.210 mg kg-1) and one brand of C. citratus (0.134 mg kg-1). Finally, based on the MERCOSUR parameters, moderate levels of lead were exceeded by only one brand of C. citratus (0.535 mg kg-1). To evaluate possible health risks, we also calculated the hazard index (HI) of the heavy metals in the target herbal tea bags. The values obtained were less than 1, showing negligible noncarcinogenic health risks for consumers. Despite this information and because of the elevated concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, and lead obtained in some of our results, we suggest more detailed studies to obtain more information about the potential toxicity of these products to humans.

Abstract
Tea and coffee contain numerous polyphenolic compounds that exhibit health-promoting properties for humans, including antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, and can also take part in the treatment of covid-19 and improve fertility. This review, presents the activity of polyphenols found in different types of tea and coffee and describes the effects of tea fermentation and coffee roasting on their polyphenol composition and antioxidant properties. Polyphenol oxidase activity is reduced in the fermentation process; therefore black tea contains significantly less polyphenolic compounds compared to green and white tea. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate - a polyphenol from tea - effectively has been shown to inhibit the activity of SARS-CoV-2 as it blocked binding of coronavirus 2 to human angiotensin converting enzyme 2, decreased the expression of inflammatory factors in the blood, including tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6, and significantly increased the overall fertilization efficiency in animals. Coffee roasting process influences both the content of polyphenols and the oxidative activity. The lowest levels of active compounds such as caffeine, chlorogenic acid and coffee acids are identified in roasted coffee beans. On the other hand, light coffee and green coffee show the strongest cytotoxic potential and antioxidant properties, and thus the greatest ability to decrease apoptosis by stopping the cell cycle in the S phase. Proteins, such as components of milk, can strongly bind/interact with phenolic compounds (especially, the CGAs) contain in coffee, which may explain the negative influence of milk on its antioxidant properties. Coffee polyphenols have also antiproliferative and antiesterase activities, which may be important in prevention of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders, respectively. In this review, biological properties of tea and coffee polyphenols, observed mainly in in vitro studies have been described. Based on these findings, future directions of the research works on these compounds have been suggested.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between lifestyle habits and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among different ages who were initially diagnosed with breast cancer (within the first 2 weeks) and to determine the contribution of lifestyle habits factors on HRQoL. Methods: Patients with breast cancer were recruited from 22 hospitals in 11 provinces or municipalities in northern and eastern China. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer (FACT-B) was used to measure HRQoL. Chi-square test, ANOVA, and multivariable generalized linear models were conducted to identify the differences in HRQoL between two age groups (age <50 years and ≥50 years) and to evaluate the contribution of lifestyle habits factors on HRQoL of patients with breast cancer. Results: About 1,199 eligible patients with breast cancer were used for analysis. Younger women (aged <50 years) appeared to show lower scores than older women (aged ≥50 years) in HRQoL subscales, including emotional well-being (p = 0.003), functional well-being (p = 0.006), breast cancer subscale (p = 0.038), and FACT-B Total scores (p = 0.028). Tea and alcohol consumption and being very satisfied with sleep and current life were the strongest predictors of higher HRQoL in younger group. Meanwhile, no coffee consumption, frequent participation in physical activities, high sleep satisfaction, and current life satisfaction were the key predictors of higher HRQoL in older women with breast cancer. Conclusion: The relationship of the nine lifestyle habit items with HRQoL differed among younger and older women. The associated variable of low HRQoL can help clinicians take intervention early in order to improve the prognosis of patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the most important and the number one cause of mortality in both developing and industrialized nations. The co-morbidities associated with CVD are observed from infancy to old age. Apolipoprotein B100 (Apo B) is the primary apolipoprotein and structural protein of all major atherogenic particles derived from the liver including Very-Low- Density Lipoproteins (VLDL), Intermediate-density Lipoprotein (IDL), and Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL) particles. It has been suggested that measurement of the Apo B concentration is a superior and more reliable index for the prediction of CVD risk than is the measurement of LDL-C. Nutraceuticals and medicinal plants have attracted significant attention as it pertains to the treatment of non-communicable diseases, particularly CVD, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The effect of nutraceuticals and herbal products on CVD, as well as some of its risk factors such as dyslipidemia, have been investigated previously. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of these natural products, including herbal supplements and functional foods (e.g. fruits and vegetables as either dry materials, or their extracts) on Apo B has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the primary objective of this paper was to review the effect of bioactive natural compounds on plasma Apo B concentrations. It is concluded that, in general, medicinal plants and nutraceuticals can be used as complementary medicine to reduce plasma Apo B levels in a safe, accessible, and inexpensive manner in an attempt to prevent and treat CVD.

Abstract
Duckweeds are the smallest free-floating flowering aquatic plants. Their biotechnological applications include their use as food, bioenergy, and environmental sustainability, as they can help clean polluted water. The high growth capacity and their chemical properties make them suitable for human health applications. Here we evaluated the ethanolic extracts from five species of duckweeds by HPLC-DAD/MS-MS for chemical characterization. Sixteen compounds were identified and quantified, in which three were chlorogenic acid derivatives and eleven apigenin and luteolin derivatives. We describe for the first time the presence in duckweeds of 5-O-(E)-caffeoylquinic acid (1), 3-O-(E)-coumaroylquinic acid (2), luteolin-7-O-glucoside-C-glucoside (3), 4-O-(E)-coumaroylquinic acid (4), luteolin-6-C-glucoside-8-C-rhamnoside (5), and luteolin-8-C-glucoside-6-C-rhamnoside (6). The flavonoids diversity showed a significant content of luteolin and its derivatives, except for Landoltia punctata that had significant apigenin content. Flavones identified in duckweeds were mostly C-glycosides, which can benefit human diets, and its abundance seems to be related to the higher antioxidant and anticancer capacities of Wolffiella caudata, Wolffia borealis, and Landoltia punctata. Our findings reinforce the idea that duckweeds could be valuable additives to the human diet, and their potential should be further explored.

Abstract
Although tea catechins in green tea and green tea beverages must be stable to deliver good sensory quality and healthy benefits, they are always unstable during processing and storage. Ascorbic acid (AA) is often used to protect catechins in green tea beverages, and AA is easily oxidized to form dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA). However, the function of DHAA on the stability of catechins is not clear. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of DHAA on the stability of catechins and clarify the mechanism of effects by conducting a series of experiments that incubate DHAA with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) or catechins. Results showed that DHAA had a dual function on EGCG stability, protecting its stability by inhibiting hydrolysis and promoting EGCG consumption by forming ascorbyl adducts. DHAA also reacted with (−)-epicatechin (EC), (−)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), and (−)-epigallocatechin (EGC) to form ascorbyl adducts, which destabilized them. After 9 h of reaction with DHAA, the depletion rates of EGCG, ECG, EC, and EGC were 30.08%, 22.78%, 21.45%, and 13.55%, respectively. The ability of DHAA to promote catechins depletion went from high to low: EGCG, ECG, EGC, and EC. The results are important for the processing and storage of tea and tea beverages, as well as the general exploration of synergistic functions of AA and catechins.

Abstract
A series of incubation systems of pure (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), ascorbic acid (AA) and dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA) at 80 °C were performed to investigated the effect and mechanism of AA on the stability of EGCG. Results shows the dual function of AA, protect action at low concentration and promoting degradation at high concentration, and the critical concentration is about 10 mmol/L. The protective properties of AA due to the reversible reaction from AA to DHAA inhibiting oxidation pathway of EGCG to EGCG quinone or other activated intermediates, and both AA and DHAA can inhibit the hydrolysis of EGCG. The properties of promoting degradation is mainly due to the fact that DHAA, the oxidation product of AA, can react with EGCG to generate some ascorbyl adducts of EGCG. This result is helpful to control the stability of catechins and further clarify the complex interaction on healthy between EGCG and AA.

Abstract
Jasonia glutinosa (rock-tea, RT) has numerous biological activities. In the present work, the beneficial effects of dietary RT on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) were studied. Fish fed experimental diets containing 0 (control), 10 or 30% of RT for 15 and 30 days. Samples from skin mucus, blood, head kidney, liver and gut were obtained at 15 and 30 days. The antioxidant properties from RT were analysed such as the antioxidant capacity and phenolic content. The heat shock protein 70 level (HSP70) and the total oxidized proteins were evaluated on skin mucus as stress markers. Immune parameters, both humoral (peroxidase activity, immunoglobulin M levels and complement activity) and cellular (phagocytic, respiratory burst and peroxidase activities) were determined in skin mucus, serum or head-kidney leucocytes, respectively. Concomitantly, the expression of different genes related to inflammation and oxidative stress was studied both in liver and gut. Skin mucus peroxidase was significantly increased on fish fed 10% RT for 15 days with respect to the control group. In addition, Serum IgM levels were significantly increased while HSP70 levels and oxidized proteins were significantly decreased on skin mucus from fish fed 30% RT for 30 days, respectively. Besides, cellular immune parameters (phagocytosis, respiratory burst and peroxidase activity) were significantly higher in leucocytes from fish fed the RT diets for 15 days, but not for 30 days. Finally, the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes was up-regulated in liver at 15 and in liver and gut at 30 days. However, the expression of il1b and hsp70 was down-regulated in the liver of fish fed 30% RT for 30 days with respect to the values of control fish. The possible inclusion of RT in fish diets as an additive with antioxidant and/or immunostimulant activities is discussed.

Abstract
Currently, the role of the nanoparticles in the structure of the composites and their benefits for the health of the body is valuable. In this study, the effects of the doping on the structural and morphological properties of the hydrogels using a Mg co-doped ZnO hydrogel, which has been fabricated by the sol–gel process, have been investigated. Then, a hydrogel containing nanoparticle and a hydrogel without any nanoparticles was produced as a control. The hydrogels were loaded with catechin and the related characterization was evolved based on the new structure of the matrices. The Mg0.99Zn0.01O nanoparticles were synthesized using a green synthesis method. To investigate the properties of the nanoparticles, zeta potential and XRD were studied. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), FTIR, TGA, swelling Ratio, and compression tests were investigated for the hydrogels. Based on the results, FESEM showed a more compressed structure for hydrogels including nanoparticles rather than the hydrogels without a nanoparticle. The TGA showed a higher decomposition temperature in the hydrogels including nanoparticles. The swelling ratio of hydrogels containing a nanoparticle was higher than the control hydrogel. κ-Carrageenan/ Mg0.99Zn0.01O/NaCMC/Catechin had the highest swelling ratio (44.15%) rather than the κ-Carrageenan/NaCMC (33.22%). Mg0.99Zn0.01O nanoparticles presented a stronger structure of hydrogels in the compression test. It is concluded that the role of the synthesized nanoparticle is critical in the structure of the hydrogel.

Abstract
The control of immune responses is particularly critical when an increase of oxidative stress occurs, causing an impairment of immune cell response and a condition of systemic inflammation, named oxinflammation. Nutritional strategies based on the use in the diet of phytochemicals extracted from plants, rich in antioxidants, could help restore the antioxidant/oxidant balance and obtain a modulation of immune response. Lignin represents a valuable resource of phenolic compounds, which are characterized by a corroborated antioxidant effect. To date, there are no studies reporting the effects of lignin in the diet on immune responses and oxidative stress in ruminants. The objective of the present experiment was the evaluation of the dietary inclusion of Pinus taeda hydrolyzed lignin on the ex vivo immune responses and oxidative stress biomarkers by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from beef steers. In order to test the effect during oxidative stress exposition, cells were treated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The proliferation test and the viability assay were carried out on cells, whereas, on supernatants, the cytokine profile and the oxidative stress biomarkers were evaluated. The dietary inclusion with P. taeda hydrolyzed lignin resulted in cytoprotection after H2O2 exposition, increasing the number of viable monocytes and decreasing the reactive oxygen/nitrogen species production in supernatants. The cytokine profile indicated the modulatory role of hydrolyzed lignin on immune response, with a concomitant decrease of TNF-α and increase of IL-8 production, which are strictly connected with monocyte activation and antioxidant response pathway. These results demonstrated that hydrolyzed lignin may provide a modulation of oxidative stress and inflammatory response in PBMCs; thus, the P. taeda hydrolyzed lignin could be suggested as an innovative phytochemical in ruminant feed.

Abstract
Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent and can affect high percentage of the worlds' population. Oxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Nowadays, more attention has been focused on the herbal remedies in the field of drug discovery. Green tea is an important source of polyphenol antioxidants. It has long been used as a beverage worldwide. The most interesting polyphenol components of green tea leaves that are related with health benefits are the catechins. Taken together, this review suggested that green tea, with its wide spectrum of activities, could be a healthy alternative for controlling the damaging reactions seen in periodontal diseases.

Abstract
Introduction Mouth rinse containing essential oil is one of the most popular, over the counter dental products which has been promoted to have anti-inflammatory, anti-plaque and anti-microbial properties. An essential oil alcohol-free mouth rinse with green tea has been introduced recently and promoted for management of periodontitis and gingivitis. As the role of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) mouth rinse in management of periodontal disease has been evaluated previously, the aim of this study is to compare the tolerability of none-alcohol containing green tea-based (NAGT) mouth rinse with CHX mouth rinse. Methods Forty healthy subjects were enrolled in September 2018 at King Abdulaziz University and allocated randomly to two study arms: NAGT mouth rinse and chlorhexidine gluconate mouth rinse. Study subjects were instructed to follow the manufacturer instructions and rinse twice daily for two weeks. Collected data included age, gender, smoking history in addition to subjective assessment using a validated questionnaire. Intraoral clinical examination was completed at baseline and 2-weeks time point. Results The data of 36 patients were included in this study and analyzed. At 2 weeks, NAGT group reported higher burning sensation score compared to chlorhexidine group (mean: 4.33 and 0.6 respectively; P < 0.05). Reported mucosal dryness was more evident in NAGT group (mean: 1.9 Vs 1.7 for chlorhexidine group). Oral examination revealed significant mucosal desquamation (27.8%) in NAGT group. However, oral ulceration was reported equally in both groups (5.6%). Conclusion The current data demonstrates an overall less tolerability of a non-alcohol containing green tea-based mouth rinse compared to chlorhexidine gluconate. Further long term randomized clinical trials are recommended to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Abstract Tea polyphenols are known to prevent various ailments like cancer, atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes. Our study aimed at to decipher the gastroprotective effect of aqueous black tea extract (BTE) against ethanol-induced gastric damage and the role of BTE in modulating MMP-9 activity and expression, both in vivo and in vitro. The protective role of BTE was assessed in Sprague-Dawley rats after inducing damage with 70% ethanol. Human gastric adenocarcinoma cells (AGS) were treated with ethanol in ex vivo experiment. MMP-9 activity and expression were investigated through gelatin zymography and western blotting. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was also studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and confocal microscopy, with or without treatment of BTE both in vivo and in vitro experiments. In addition, the effect of citric acid treated BTE (cBTE), which mimics lemon tea, was examined on ethanol-induced gastropathy. BTE exhibited antiulcer activity through reduction of glutathione depletion, lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, ROS production and inflammatory cell infiltration in rat gastric tissues. In addition, BTE significantly inhibited synthesis and secretion of proMMP-9 both in vivo and in vitro. The mitochondrial enzymes succinate dehydrogenase and NADH oxidase in rat gastric tissues were downregulated by BTE while protecting gastric ulcer. Citric acid addition to BTE was observer to enrich the lead compound, catechin. Interestingly, cBTE showed higher anti-ulcer activity than the untreated one. BTE shows protective role against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats through scavenging ROS and downregulating proMMP-9 activity. While cBTE shows better protection due to enrichment of catechin and removal of tannins in tea extract leading to enhanced inhibitory role on proMMP-9 activity and ROS production. Graphical Abstract

Abstract
White tea is considered as a special kind of tea not only for its simplest process, but also for its endurable storage. However, little studies have been done about the changes of white tea with increasing aging time, including its composition and health‐imparting effects. In the present work, white tea aged 1 year (WT‐1), 3 years (WT‐3), and 5 years (WT‐5) were collected. Their major chemical compounds, antioxidant activities, and inhibitory effects on α‐Amylase and α‐Glucosidase were evaluated. Results showed that white tea of different storage time showed good antioxidant activity in DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assay, which decreases with the prolongation of storage time. The inhibitory effects on α‐Amylase and α‐Glucosidase which are key enzymes related to type II diabetes in vitro, are also observed in the similar trend. Meanwhile, prolongation of storage time decreased the content of polyphenols, the main bioactive compounds in tea, which may lead to decrease in the activities investigated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phoenix Dan Cong tea is an Oolong tea produced in Chaozhou, China. Nowaday, the experimental studies on the benefical effects of the Phoenix Dan Cong tea are rare. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the activity of Phoenix Dan Cong tea aqueous extract (PDCe). METHODS We used a series of evaluation methods in the present study to achieve an in-depth understanding and evaluation of the antioxidant and antitumor activity of PDCe. RESULTS High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) studies have indicated that PDCe is rich in catechins such as gallocatechin (GC), epigallocatechin (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG), with sparse amounts of theaflavins. We discovered that PDCe scavenges ABTS•+ and DPPH• free radicals in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, PDCe can significantly induce apoptosis of MDA-MB231 cells, mainly through the death-receptor-mediated extrinsic apoptotic pathway. Internalized PDCe can not only downregulate intracellular reactive oxygen species levels but also induce oxidative damage to mitochondria in MDA-MB231 cells. CONCLUSIONS Phoenix Dan Cong tea may act as a substitute for natural antioxidants and as a promising anticancer agent due to its protective effect on human health.

Abstract
Chinese Xi-Gui tea is one ancient cultivated variety of Camellia sinensis var. assamica. At present, it is used for producing expensive and elite tea in China. Five new flavoalkaloids, (-)-6-(5''' S)- N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-epicatechin-3- O-gallate (ester-type catechins pyrrolidinone E, etc-pyrrolidinone E, 1), (-)-6-(5''' R)- N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-epicatechin-3- O-gallate (etc-pyrrolidinone F, 2) (-)-8-(5''' S)- N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-epicatechin-3- O-gallate (etc-pyrrolidinone G, 3a), (-)-8-(5''' S)- N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-catechin-3- O-gallate (etc-pyrrolidinone I, 4a), (-)-8-(5''' R)- N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-catechin-3- O-gallate (etc-pyrrolidinone J, 4b), and one new naturally occurring natural product (-)-8-(5''' R)- N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-epicatechin-3- O-gallate (etc-pyrrolidinone H, 3b) together with the known flavoalkaloids etc-pyrrolidinones A-D (5, 6, 7a, and 7b) were detected and isolated from Xi-Gui green tea. Their structures were identified by comprehensive NMR spectroscopic analyses. Absolute configurations of 1-3 were established by comparison of the CD analyses with epicatechin-3- O-gallate (ECG). Compounds 1-4 were evaluated for their protection against high glucose induced cell senescence on human umbilical vein endothelia cells (HUVECs) and showed significant protection effects ( p < 0.01) at both 1.0 and 10 μM. A discussion on the possible evolution of tea plants divergent from related food plants on the basis of phytochemical view is also provided.

Abstract
Green tea infusions are one of the most popular beverages consumed across the world, especially is Asian countries. Green tea quality is primarily based on catechin content, however, the concentration of elements could also significantly influence its biological properties and thus quality and safety. The main purpose of the present study was the evaluation of catechin, antioxidant activity and metal content (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Cd and Ni) in different green tea types cultivated in Japan, Sri Lanka, South Korea, India, China and Japan. The chemical analysis of samples was performed using LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS for organic constituents and atomic absorption spectrometry (flame and electrothermal) method for inorganic ones. The obtained results were subjected to chemometric elaboration. EGC (213 mg/100 mL of the tea infusion in South Korean Jeoncha) and EGCG (124 mg/100 mL in Japanese Sencha) were the dominant catechins in all green tea samples. Chinese and Indian green tea samples contained the highest concentration of toxic heavy metals, however these values were far below appropriate limitations for green teas. PCA revealed significant similarities between Japanese samples and Korean Jeoncha. In general the latter one was evaluated to have the best quality based on the investigated parameters.

Abstract
A comprehensive study on the composition and antioxidant properties of black tea samples with a chemometric approach was performed via LC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS, DPPH radical scavenging assay, and Folin-Ciocalteu assay (TPC). Marked differences between the teas from seven different countries (China, India, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Nepal, Sri Lanka) were shown. The Indian samples demonstrated the highest total catechin content (184.8 mg/100 mL), the largest TPC and DPPH scavenging potential (58.2 mg/100 mL and 84.5%, respectively). The applied principal component analysis (PCA) and ANOVA revealed several correlations between the level of catechins in tea infusions. EC (epicatechin), ECG (epicatechin gallate), EGC (epigallocatechin), and EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) content was not correlated with DPPH, gallic acid, and TPC; however, a strong correlation of EC and ECG between themselves and a negative correlation of these two catechins with EGCG and EGC was noted. Interestingly, simple catechins were not found to be responsible for antioxidant properties of the black teas. The samples collected in the higher altitudes were similar.

Abstract
Epidemiologic and animal studies suggest a protective role of green tea against breast cancer. However, the underlying mechanism is not understood. We conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase II clinical trial to investigate whether supplementation with green tea extract (GTE) modifies mammographic density (MD), as a potential mechanism, involving 1,075 healthy postmenopausal women. Women assigned to the treatment arm consumed daily 4 decaffeinated GTE capsules containing 1,315 mg total catechins, including 843 mg epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) for 12 months. A computer-assisted method (Madena) was used to assess MD in digital mammograms at baseline and month 12 time points in 932 completers (462 in GTE and 470 in placebo). GTE supplementation for 12 months did not significantly change percent MD (PMD) or absolute MD in all women. In younger women (50-55 years), GTE supplementation significantly reduced PMD by 4.40% as compared with the placebo with a 1.02% PMD increase from pre- to postintervention (P = 0.05), but had no effect in older women (Pinteraction = 0.07). GTE supplementation did not induce MD change in other subgroups of women stratified by catechol-O-methyltransferase genotype or level of body mass index. In conclusion, 1-year supplementation with a high dose of EGCG did not have a significant effect on MD measures in all women, but reduced PMD in younger women, an age-dependent effect similar to those of tamoxifen. Further investigation of the potential chemopreventive effect of green tea intake on breast cancer risk in younger women is warranted. Cancer Prev Res; 10(12); 710-8. ©2017 AACR.

Abstract
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is a famous herb, and its extract has been extensively used in traditional Chinese medicinal system. In this context, several studies have revealed its health benefits and medicinal potentialities for several ailments. With ever increasing scientific knowledge, search for safer, potential and novel type of health-related supplements quest, scientists are re-directing their research interests to explore natural resources i.e. medicinal herbs/plant derived compounds. Green tea consumption has gained a special attention and popularity in the modern era of changing lifestyle. The present review is aimed to extend the current knowledge by highlighting the importance and beneficial applications of green tea in humans for safeguarding various health issues. Herein, we have extensively reviewed, analyzed, and compiled salient information on green tea from the authentic published literature available in PubMed and other scientific databases. Scientific literature evidenced that owing to the bioactive constituents including caffeine, l-theanine, polyphenols/flavonoids and other potent molecules, green tea has many pharmacological and physiological functions. It possesses multi-beneficial applications in treating various disorders of humans. This review also provides in-depth insights on the medicinal values of green tea which will be useful for researchers, medical professionals, veterinarians, nutritionists, pharmacists and pharmaceutical industry. Future research emphasis and promotional avenues are needed to explore its potential therapeutic applications for designing appropriate pharmaceuticals, complementary medicines, and effective drugs as well as popularize and propagate its multidimensional health benefits.

Abstract
Several health beneficial effects have been attributed to tea consumption, most of the effects are due to the strong antioxidant property of tea catechins. The present study evaluates the effect of black tea extract (BTE) supplementation on the redox balance of rats at different stages in their life span. We have evaluated erythrocyte and plasma redox status in young (4 months), middle-aged (12 months) and old-aged (24 months) male Wistar rats, by quantifying an array of parameters linked to redox status. Our results show that BTE augments redox status, measured in terms of intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), plasma membrane redox system (PMRS) and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP) of plasma, in rats from three different age groups. This study provides experimental evidence of a strong antioxidant property of black tea on rats in different stages of their lifespan.

Abstract
The mycotoxin citrinin, is produced by several species of Penicillium, Aspergillus and Monascus, and is capable of inducing cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and apoptosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of citrinin in mouse skeletal muscle cells (C2C12) and to overcome the cellular adverse effects by supplementing green tea extract (GTE) rich in polyphenols. C2C12 myoblasts were differentiated to myotubes and were exposed to citrinin in a dose dependent manner (0-100 µM) for 24 h and IC50 value was found to be 100 µM that resulted in decreased cell viability, increased LDH leakage and compromised membrane integrity. Mitochondrial membrane potential loss, increased accumulation of intracellular ROS and sub G1 phase of cell cycle was observed. To ameliorate the cytotoxic effects of CTN, C2C12 cells were pretreated with GTE (20, 40, 80 µg/ml) for 2 h followed by citrinin (100 µM) treatment for 24 h. GTE pretreatment combated citrinin-induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress. GTE at 40 and 80 µg/ml significantly promoted cell survival and upregulated antioxidant enzyme activities (CAT, SOD, GPx) and endogenous antioxidant GSH, while the gene and protein expression levels were significantly restored through its effective antioxidant mechanism. Present study results suggested the antioxidant properties of GTE as a herbal source in ameliorating the citrinin-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
A comparative study was undertaken to determine the difference in quality, antioxidant activity, and mineral content of northern and southern Indian tea varieties. The results showed that the antioxidant activity, theaflavin and thearubigin content, color particle size and total soluble solids influence the tea leaf and tea dust. Assam leaf showed higher values for all the physico-chemical properties followed by Darjeeling leaf. In addition, the mineral composition of the tea infusion was also influenced. The preparation method, including the amounts of tea and water used, infusion time was shown to be a major determinant of the component concentrations of tea beverages as consumed. An illustration of the variation introduced by these varieties of tea is provided by comparing solids, caffeine, minerals and antioxidant activity of black teas available locally.

Abstract
Tea, rich in phytochemicals, has been suggested to have human health benefits. The phenolic profiles, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of 27 tea cultivars were determined. Wide ranges of variation were found in analyzed cultivars for the contents of water-soluble phenolics (121.6-223.7 mg/g dry weight (DW)), total catechins (TC) (90.5-177.2 mg/g DW), antioxidant activities (PSC values 627.3-2332.3 μmol of vitamin C equiv/g DW, ORAC values (1865.1-3489.3 μmol of vitamin C equiv/g DW), CAA values (37.7-134.3 μmol of QE/g DW without PBS wash and 25.3-75.4 μmol of QE/g DW with PBS wash) and antiproliferative activity (53.0-90.8% at the concentration of 400 μg/mL extracts). The PSC, ORAC and CAA values were significantly correlated with phenolics, epicatechin gallate (ECG), CC and TC. Knowledge of specific differences among tea cultivars is important for breeding tea cultivars and gives sights to its potential application to promote health.

Abstract
Green tea catechins (GTCs) are known to improve fat oxidation (FOX) during fasted, rested and exercise conditions wherein epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is thought to be the most pharmacologically active and has been studied extensively. From the available data of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on EGCG, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate whether EGCG consumption indeed increase energy expenditure (EE) and promote FOX. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, JICST, JSTPLUS, and JMEDPLUS and others) and eight RCTs were included. RCTs were reviewed using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and methodological quality was assessed. After data extraction, results were aggregated using fixed- and random-effect approaches and expressed to quantify the relationship between the dose of EGCG for respiratory quotient (RQ), EE and rate of FOX to compare the EGCG and placebo treatments. The meta-analysis results of verities of studies in terms of dose and length of duration revealed that EGCG supplementation provided significant mean difference (MD) when compared with placebo for RQ [MD: -0.02; 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), -0.04 to 0.00; I2=67%; P=.01] and EE [MD: 158.05 kJ/day; 95% CI, 4.72 to 311.38; I2=0%; P=.04] in fixed-effect approach. Changes in FOX did not reach the level of statistical significance. Meta-analyses of EGCG influence on the body mass index, waist circumference and total body fat mass (TBFM) were also examined and their impact on the promotion of FOX is reported. Effect of EGCG doses was also systematically reviewed. Finding showed that EGCG intake moderately accelerates EE and reduces RQ. The analyses revealed that the EGCG resulted in difference in RQ and EE but the effect on the other measures of energy metabolism was relatively mild. Possibly, EGCG alone has the potential to increase metabolic rate at 300 mg dose. Collectively, the outcome supports the findings that EGCG has an effect on metabolic parameters. However, the large prospective trials are needed to confirm the findings.
