Abstract
BACKGROUND Cadmium (Cd) is a naturally occurring transition metal associated with oxidative stress in living organisms. Whereas Tetrapleura tetraptera (Tt), an ethnomedicinal plant is said to possess high antioxidant activity and used to treat various human diseases locally. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the biological activity of the ethanolic pod extract of T. tetraptera in cadmium chloride-induced toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. METHODS Six groups of adults (1-3 days old) D. melanogaster as shown: Control, Tt 2.5 mg/10 g diet, Tt 5 mg/10 g diet, CdCl2, CdCl2+ Tt 2.5 mg/10 diet and CdCl2+Tt 5 mg/10 g diet were exposed via diet for 7 days consisting of 50 flies per vial and 5 replicate per group. Thereafter, we evaluated markers for free radical generation, antioxidant, non-antioxidant activities, and emergence rates of the flies. The active compounds of Tt extract were molecularly docked against glutathione-S-transferase II. RESULTS The results indicated that CdCl2 significantly induced oxidative stress by increasing the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO) and decreasing the activity of GST without an effect on total thiol (T-SH) and non-protein thiols (NP-SHs) levels. However, co-treatment with T. tetraptera (2.5 mg/10 g diet) significantly decreased levels of LPO, H2O2, but increased GST activity. Also, co-treatment with T. tetraptera (5 mg/10 g diet) increased NPSH and T-SH levels by 18.6 % and 35.8 %. Furthermore, Co-treatment (5 mg/10 g diet) increased the rate of offspring emergence. CONCLUSION T. tetraptera ameliorated cadmium chloride-induced oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster and increased offspring hatching rate. T. tetraptera may therefore serve as a good regimen for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases induced by cadmium.

Abstract
Telomere length has been related to human health and ageing in multiple studies. However, these studies have analyzed a small set of variables, according to pre-formulated hypotheses. We used data from NHANES 1999-2002 to perform a preregistered cross-sectional analysis. From these four years we selected the participants with available leukocyte telomere length measure and with plausible daily energy intake, leading to a total study population of 7096 participants. Then, we divided the participants in three groups according to age: Young 20-39 (n = 2623), Middle 40-59 (n = 2210), Old 60-84 (n = 2263). On each group we performed Copula Graphical Modelling (CGM) to capture the links between the variables of interest, and we conducted certainty and sensitivity analyses to understand the robustness of the results. Blood levels of C-reactive protein and γ-tocopherol, and intake of caffeine and fibers are inversely related to telomere length across the age strata. Sex, race, smoking, physical activity and indicators of socioeconomic status have almost no direct connection with telomeres; however, they are directly linked to C-reactive protein, which in turn is connected to leukocyte telomere length. C-reactive protein is therefore a possible central mediator of the effect of these factors on telomeres.

Abstract
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide, primarily driven by oxidative stress and inflammation. This review examines the role of antioxidants in mitigating oxidative damage, emphasizing both their therapeutic potential and limitations in AMD management. Key findings underscore the efficacy of specific antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and Coenzyme Q10, in slowing AMD progression. Landmark studies such as AREDS and AREDS2 have shaped current antioxidant formulations, although challenges persist, including patient variability and long-term safety concerns. Emerging therapies, such as mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants and novel compounds like saffron and resveratrol, offer promising avenues for AMD treatment. Complementary lifestyle interventions, including antioxidant-rich diets and physical activity, further support holistic management approaches. This review highlights the critical role of antioxidants in AMD therapy, advocating for personalized strategies to optimize patient outcomes.

Abstract
Hemp seed cake (HSC) (Cannabis sativa L.) is a high-quality plant-derived protein source rich in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). To assess the effects of HSC addition in diets on the growth and meat quality in broiler chicken, a total of 240 female three-yellow chickens (50 days of age) were randomly assigned to four groups and fed with varying levels of HSC (0% (HSC0), 5% (HSC5), 10% (HSC10), and 20% (HSC20)) for 9 weeks. As a result, the daily feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were significantly increased in the HSC20 group. Moreover, the meat quality traits, including the meat colour, water-holding capacity, intramuscular fat content, and proportion of n-3 PUFA significantly improved, and the expression of lipid synthesis genes, were increased in the HSC20 group. Meanwhile, the development of immune organs and the anti-inflammatory capabilities were enhanced in the HSC20 group. In addition, the blood lipid of chicken was reduced by improving the lipid metabolism in the HSC20 group. Therefore, adding 20% HSC in the feed had a notable effect on the growth, antioxidant and immune capabilities, blood lipid metabolism, and meat performance of the female three-yellow chickens. These findings provide significant information for improving the production performance of broiler chickens through the effective utilization of HSC.

Abstract
Naturally occurring vitamin E is a lipophilic plant-derived molecule corresponding to the 2 R forms of alpha-tocopherol. A series of natural analogs or tocochromanols are present in nature, including β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol (βT, γT, δT), the corresponding tocotrienols (αTE, βTE, γTE, δTE) and tocomonoenols. Differences between these analogs as lipophilic antioxidants and modulators of molecular processes suggest specific therapeutic properties against various disorders associated with acute and chronic inflammation. However, hepatic metabolism of these compounds via cytochrome P450-initiated side chain ω-oxidation involves the production of long-chain metabolites (LCMs) followed by intermediate (ICMs) and short-chain metabolites (SCMs), respectively. Despite the initial studies indicating these metabolites as catabolic-end products, recent findings identify their importance in providing biological functions. In this scope, LCMs, especially 13'-carboxychromanols (13'-COOHs), have been reported to hold stronger anti-inflammatory capacity than their unmetabolized precursors due to their ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase-catalyzed eicosanoid formation, as well as their modulation of the pro-inflammatory transcriptional protein nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). Also, these LCMs have been reported to enhance detoxification and lipid metabolism pathways associated with cellular inflammation by modulating the nuclear receptors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) and pregnane x receptor (PXR). These properties of LCMs will be described in this narrative review article focusing on recent information regarding their bioavailability, anti-inflammatory effects, and mechanisms of action in acute and chronic inflammatory disorders.

Abstract
Background Psychiatric disorders is a major public health problem and epilepsy contributes significantly to depression. We aimed to explore the relationship between dietary patterns and mental illness in patients with epilepsy. Methods The data presented here are based on the 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In this study, the t-test and chi-square tests or one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed for the analysis of continuous and categorical variables, respectively. Restricted cubic splines (RCSs) with four knots were employed to investigate the linear relationship and trend between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and epilepsy and psychiatric disorders, respectively. In instances where the linear relationship was not deemed to be applicable, the CDAI was categorized into four groups based on quartiles. A logistic regression analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between epilepsy and mental disorders under four distinct models. A mediation analysis was employed to ascertain whether CDAI acted as a mediator in the relationship between epilepsy and mental disorders. Results Patients with epilepsy had a significantly lower CDAI (p < 0.001) and a significantly higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders (p = 0.02) compared with non-epileptic patients. Mediation modeling showed that CDAI mediated between 3.17 and 5.21% of epilepsy-related psychiatric disorders. In stratified analyses, the prevalence of psychiatric disorders was increased in the second quartile subgroup and the third quartile subgroup of the CDAI dietary index in patients with epilepsy compared with non-epileptic patients. Conclusion Our findings suggest that patients with epilepsy have a high risk of developing psychiatric disorders and that the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) plays a key role in mediating the relationship between epilepsy and psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) is an essential micronutrient for human health and optimal physiological function. Inadequacy may be common due to a lack of bioavailability. The use of dietary lipids alongside other emulsification agents may elicit more robust serum concentrations of α-tocopherol via improved bioavailability. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine oral bioavailability of two delivery methods of α-tocopherol, (1) a microemulsion gel formula composed of dietary lipids and other emulsification agents and (2) a dry solid tablet over 12 hours. METHODS Twelve participants (age = 37.3 ± 9.6 years; height = 173.4 ± 11.8 cm; body mass = 71.2 ± 10.0 kg) participated in a double-blind, randomized, crossover trial comparing two delivery methods both dosed at 288 mg of α-tocopherol. Serum α-tocopherol concentrations were assessed from blood donated by participants at pre-consumption, 2-, 4-, 8-, and 12-hour post-consumption. Study conditions were separated by a 7-day washout. RESULTS The microemulsion gel formula delivery demonstrated significantly greater area under the curve (p < 0.001) and serum concentration maximums (p = 0.003) for serum α-tocopherol compared to the tablet delivery. No significant differences were detected between conditions for the time to reach concentration maximums (p = 0.375). CONCLUSION We conclude that a mixture of dietary lipids and emulsification agents in the form of a microemulsion gel formula was able to significantly improve bioavailability of serum α-tocopherol compared to a tablet by yielding higher serum α-tocopherol maximum concentrations and area under the curve over a 12-hour study period despite dosage being matched.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circulating dietary biomarkers are not direct proxies for intake, as the biomarkers reflect not only food and supplement consumption but also nutrient absorption, metabolism, and tissue distribution. Therefore, along with nutrient intake, several other upstream factors can impact dietary biomarker concentrations, including demographic, medical history, and genetic factors. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the dietary and nondietary determinants of circulating levels of vitamins A, C, D, and E among children aged 6 mo-4 y. METHODS Plasma retinol, β-carotene, ascorbic acid, 25(OH)D, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol were measured in 2887 samples from 1490 children enrolled in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young study. Dietary intake was assessed with 3-d food records. Associations of genetic and environmental factors with biomarker concentrations were examined using multivariable linear regression models with random intercepts. RESULTS All biomarkers except retinol were positively associated with intake of the same nutrient. Inverse associations were identified between recent gastrointestinal infection and β-carotene, ascorbic acid, and α-tocopherol, whereas recent respiratory infection was associated inversely with plasma retinol. Several genetic determinants of biomarker status were identified, validating previously reported findings. For some genetic and environmental exposures, we found evidence of statistical interaction with same-nutrient intake, indicating that the association between intake and biomarker concentration is dependent on the level or status of these other exposures. For example, the association between β-carotene intake and concentration is weaker among children with a recent respiratory infection. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that nondietary exposures including childhood infections can alter micronutrient metabolism. This summary of micronutrient determinants will facilitate improved design of future analyses exploring the role of diet in childhood chronic disease etiology through a better understanding of relevant potential confounders and mediators of the diet-outcome relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The infiltration of macrophages into adipose tissue mediates chronic inflammation that is associated with insulin resistance in obesity. Although vitamin E is beneficial against insulin resistance, its impact on adipose tissue inflammation has not been elucidated. This study aims to investigate the effects of α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol, major vitamin E isoforms, on the interaction between macrophages and adipocytes with regard to obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance. MATERIALS/METHODS Hypertrophied 3T3-L1 adipocytes were cocultured with RAW 264.7 macrophages and treated with α-tocopherol or γ-tocopherol at 12.5, 25, and 50 µM. The inflammatory cytokines (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6) and free fatty acid (FFA) release were measured by assay kits, and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) and c-Jun NH2 terminal kinase (JNK) signals were evaluated by immunoblotting. Glucose uptake was measured with a fluorescent glucose derivative. RESULTS Treatment with α-tocopherol and γ-tocopherol restrained the coculture-induced increase in cytokines and FFA release. γ-Tocopherol exhibited greater suppression of inflammatory cytokines at 12.5 and 25 µM (P < 0.001). Both tocopherols inhibited NF-κB activation by limiting translocation of NF-κB (p65) to the nucleus, with γ-tocopherol showing a stronger effect compared to α-tocopherol. α-Tocopherol inhibited JNK phosphorylation at 50 μM, whereas γ-tocopherol did not. Furthermore, coculture with macrophages impaired glucose uptake in response to insulin, but both tocopherols restored insulin responsiveness (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION α-Tocopherol and γ-tocopherol effectively mitigate inflammation induced by adipocyte-macrophage interaction, thereby ameliorating coculture-induced insulin resistance. These findings suggest the therapeutic potential of tocopherols in managing obesity-related metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
Natural forms of vitamin E include four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (α, β, γ, and δ), which are essential as lipophilic antioxidants. Among these eight isoforms, α-tocopherol (αT), the predominant form of vitamin E found in tissues, has traditionally received the most attention in disease prevention research due to its robust antioxidant activity. However, recent studies suggest that other forms of vitamin E exhibit distinct and potentially more potent beneficial activities in disease prevention and treatment. These non-αT forms of vitamin E are metabolized in vivo, producing various metabolites, including 13'-carboxychromanol, though their biological roles remain largely unknown. Notably, sphingolipids, known for their significant roles in cancer biology, may be involved in the anticancer effects of vitamin E through the modulation of sphingolipid metabolism. This review focuses on the diverse biological activities of different vitamin E forms and their metabolites, particularly their anticancer effects, while highlighting the underlying mechanisms, including their novel impact on regulating sphingolipid pathways. By elucidating these interactions, we aim to provide a deeper understanding on the multifaceted roles of vitamin E in cancer prevention and therapy.

Abstract
The chemical composition of raw oat grain is responsible for the high dietary value and health-promoting properties of oat products. This article presents the results of a study investigating the biofortification of grain in two oat genotypes-hulless and hulled-through agronomic treatments: chemical plant protection against weeds and fungi and mineral nitrogen fertilization. The applied agronomic treatments induced different changes in the fatty acid profiles, content of tocopherols, macronutrients, and micronutrients in the grain of hulled and hulless oats. Plant health contributed to higher concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids and potassium in oat grain. In turn, nitrogen fertilization decreased the content of unsaturated fatty acids, potassium, and copper and increased the content of saturated fatty acids, calcium, and manganese in oat grain. At the same time, agronomic treatments reduced the tocopherol content of the grain, which implies that the nutritional value of oats increases in the absence of chemical plant protection agents. The correlations between the content of desirable chemical compounds and agronomic treatments were stronger in hulless oat grain, which may suggest that the agronomic modification of oat-based foods is more effective in this genotype. The content of exogenous alpha-linoleic acid C18:3 n-3 and alpha-tocopherol was higher in grain harvested from the control treatment (without chemical plant protection), whereas grain harvested from fully protected treatments accumulated more essential gamma-linolenic acid C18:3 n-6. The content of gamma-tocopherol and copper in oat grain was higher in the absence of nitrogen fertilization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood lipid profiles are associated with various nutritional elements and dietary factors. This study aimed to explore the association between total dietary vitamin E intake and remnant cholesterol (RC), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using NHANES 2007-2018 data. A total of 8,639 eligible participants (45.58% men and 54.42% women) with an average age of 46.12 ± 16.65 years were included in this study. Weighted multivariate linear regression and subgroup analyses were used to examine the association between vitamin E intake and RC, TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C. Smooth curve fitting was used to explore potential non-linear associations. RESULTS After adjusting for other covariates, multivariate linear regression analysis showed that higher vitamin E intake was negatively associated with plasma RC (β = -0.22, 95% CI: -0.27, -0.16), TC (β = -0.33, 95% CI: -0.51, -0.16), LDL-C (β = -0.25, 95% [confidence interval] CI: -0.40, -0.10) and positively associated with HDL-C (β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.07, 0.20) in US adults. Subgroup analysis indicated that age may influence the association between vitamin E intake and RC. At the same time, gender may also affect the association between vitamin E intake and HDL-C. CONCLUSION Higher vitamin E intake was negatively associated with plasma RC, TC, LDL-C and positively associated with HDL-C.

Abstract
Currently, breast cancer is the most common cause of mortality caused by neoplasia in women worldwide. The unmet challenges of conventional cancer therapy are chemoresistance and lack of selectivity, which can lead to serious side effects in patients; therefore, new treatments based on natural compounds that serve as adjuvants in breast cancer therapy are urgently needed. Tocopherols are naturally occurring antioxidant compounds that have shown antitumor activity against several types of cancer, including breast cancer. This review summarizes the antitumoral activity of tocopherols, such as the antiproliferative, apoptotic, anti-invasive, and antioxidant effects of tocopherols, through different molecular mechanisms. According to the studies described, α-T, δ-T and γ-T are the most studied in breast tumor cells; however, α-T and γ-T show a more critical antitumor activity and significant potential as a complements to chemotherapeutic drugs against breast cancer, enhancing toxicity against tumor cells and preventing cytotoxicity in nontumor cells. However, the possible relationship between tocopherol intake, related to concentration, and the promotion of cancer in particular cases should not be ruled out, so additional studies are required to determine the correct dose to obtain the desired antitumor effect. Moreover, nanomicelles of D-α-tocopherol have promising potential as pharmaceutical excipients for drug delivery to improve the cytotoxicity and selectivity of first-line chemotherapeutics against breast cancer.

Abstract
The causal association between vitamin E status and osteoarthritis (OA) remains controversial in previous epidemiological studies. We employed a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the causal relationship between circulating alpha-tocopherol levels (main forms of vitamin E in our body) and OA. The instrumental variables (IVs) of circulating alpha-tocopherol levels were obtained from a Genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset of 7781 individuals of European descent. The outcome of OA was derived from the UK biobank. Two-sample MR analysis was used to estimate the causal relationship between circulating alpha-tocopherol levels and OA. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was the primary analysis in this analysis. We used the MR-Egger method to determine horizontal pleiotropic in this work. The heterogeneity effect of instrumental IVs was detected by MR-Egger and IVW analyses. Sensitivity analysis was performed by removing single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) one by one. Three SNPs (rs964184, rs2108622, and rs11057830) (P < 5E-8) strongly associated with circulating alpha-tocopherol levels were used in this analysis. The IVW-random effect indicated no causal relationship between circulating alpha-tocopherol levels and clinically diagnosed OA (OR = 0.880, 95% CI 0.626, 1.236, P = 0.461). Similarly, IVW analysis showed no causal association between circulating alpha-tocopherol levels and self-reported OA (OR = 0.980, 95% CI 0.954, 1.006, P = 0.139). Other methods of MR analyses and sensitivity analyses revealed consistent findings. MR-Egger and IVW methods indicated no significant heterogeneity between IVs. The MR-Egger intercept showed no horizontal pleiotropic. The results of this linear Mendelian randomization study indicate no causal association between genetically predicted alpha-tocopherol levels and the progression of OA. Alpha-tocopherol may not provide beneficial and more favorable outcomes for the progression of OA. Further MR analysis based on updated GWASs with more IVs is required to verify the results of our study.

Abstract
Background Dentigerous cysts (DC) form due to fluid accumulation between the crown of the tooth and the reduced enamel epithelium. Due to the diverse clinical characteristics, such as ambiguity concerning their biological origins and the significance of timely diagnosis and detection of these lesions, researchers are presently motivated to undertake further investigations. The aim of the present study was to assess the amount of serum alpha-tocopherol in patients with DC and compare it with that of normal, healthy individuals. Methods A total sample size of n=34 was included in the current study. Group A, designated as the control group, comprised 17 randomly selected healthy subjects, while Group B, the DC diagnostic group, consisted of 17 patients. Blood samples were collected, and the concentration of vitamin E or alpha-tocopherol was evaluated and expressed in mg/mL. Results Compared to the mean vitamin E level in healthy controls (12.08 ± 1.92 mg/mL), patients with DC showed a statistically significant (p<0.0001) reduction in mean vitamin E levels (5.29 ± 1.01 mg/mL). Conclusion Patients with DC have lower levels of vitamin E than healthy individuals. The reduced concentration of vitamin E can have a role in the extension of cystic volume and thus have an impact on the aggressiveness of pathologic lesions. The therapeutic benefits of vitamin E supplementation in reducing the aggressiveness of DC should be evaluated in future research.

Abstract
Active components in medicinal plants provide unlimited useful and traditional medicines. Antimicrobial activities are found in secondary metabolites in plant extracts such as argan oil. This experimental investigation aims to determine argan oil's volatile compounds and examine their in vitro antimicrobial properties. In silico simulations, molecular docking, pharmacokinetics, and drug-likeness prediction revealed the processes underlying the in vitro biological possessions. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to screen argan oil's primary components. In silico molecular docking studies were used to investigate the ability of the selected bioactive constituents of argan oil to act effectively against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolated from infections. The goal was to study their ability to interact with both bacteria's essential therapeutic target protein. The 21 chemicals in argan oil were identified by GC/MS. Docking results for all compounds with S. aureus and P. aeruginosa protease proteins ranged from -5 to -9.4 kcal/mol and -5.7 to -9.7 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to reference ligands. Our docking result indicates that the 10-octadecenoic acid, methyl ester was the most significant compound with affinity scores of -9.4 and -9.7 kcal/mol for S. aureus and P. aeruginosa proteins, respectively. The minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of argan oil were 0.7 ± 0.03 and 0.5 ± 0.01 for S. aureus and 0.4 ± 0.01 and 0.3 ± 0.02 for P. aeruginosa, respectively. We confirmed the antimicrobial properties of argan oil that showed significant growth inhibition for S. aureus and P. aeruginosa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Identifying biological drivers of mammographic breast density (MBD), a strong risk factor for breast cancer, could provide insight into breast cancer etiology and prevention. Studies on dietary factors and MBD have yielded conflicting results. There are, however, very limited data on the associations of dietary biomarkers and MBD. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the associations of vitamins and related cofactor metabolites with MBD in premenopausal women. METHODS We measured 37 vitamins and related cofactor metabolites in fasting plasma samples of 705 premenopausal women recruited during their annual screening mammogram at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO. Volpara was used to assess volumetric percent density (VPD), dense volume (DV), and nondense volume (NDV). We estimated the least square means of VPD, DV, and NDV across quartiles of each metabolite, as well as the regression coefficient of a metabolite in continuous scale from multiple covariate-adjusted linear regression. We corrected for multiple testing using the Benjamini-Hochberg procedure to control the false discover rate (FDR) at a 5% level. RESULTS Participants' mean VPD was 10.5%. Two vitamin A metabolites (β-cryptoxanthin and carotene diol 2) were positively associated, and one vitamin E metabolite (γ-tocopherol) was inversely associated with VPD. The mean VPD increased across quartiles of β-cryptoxanthin (Q1 = 7.2%, Q2 = 7.7%, Q3 = 8.4%%, Q4 = 9.2%; P-trend = 1.77E-05, FDR P value = 1.18E-03). There was a decrease in the mean VPD across quartiles of γ-tocopherol (Q1 = 9.4%, Q2 = 8.1%, Q3 = 8.0%, Q4 = 7.8%; P -trend = 4.01E-03, FDR P value = 0.04). Seven metabolites were associated with NDV: 3 vitamin E (γ-CEHC glucuronide, δ-CEHC, and γ-tocopherol) and 1 vitamin C (gulonate) were positively associated, whereas 2 vitamin A (carotene diol 2 and β-cryptoxanthin) and 1 vitamin C (threonate) were inversely associated with NDV. No metabolite was significantly associated with DV. CONCLUSION We report novel associations of vitamins and related cofactor metabolites with MBD in premenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Monitoring serum vitamin A (retinol) and vitamin E (α-tocopherol) concentrations is common practice for assessing nutritional status. Measurement of these vitamins can be challenging due to several factors. Whilst the RCPAQAP Vitamins: Serum Program assists participating laboratories in harmonisation, the materials provided do not contain the analogues of retinol and α-tocopherol that may be present in real patient samples. We aimed to assess participants' capacity to accurately report retinol and α-tocopherol in the presence of the vitamin E analogues tocopherol acetate and γ-tocopherol. METHODS A supplementary series of a control sample and three matched spiked samples were distributed to each laboratory participating in the Program. Retinol and α-tocopherol results for each spiked sample were compared to the results of the control sample submitted by each participant. Acceptability of retinol and α-tocopherol results was determined based on the RCPAQAP allowable performance specifications (APS). RESULTS Thirteen participants returned results for the supplementary sample series. Interference from α-tocopherol acetate was observed with results below the APS in 30 % (n=4) of laboratories for retinol quantification and in 23 % (n=3) for α-tocopherol quantification. One laboratory returned results above the APS for α-tocopherol when γ-tocopherol was present. CONCLUSIONS This supplementary sample series has shown that the presence of vitamin E analogues can lead to the over or under estimation of nutritional status by some participants. Affected laboratories are encouraged to review their analytical procedures. To further assess laboratory competence, EQA providers should consider using patient samples or spiked challenge samples.

Abstract
Hemp seed cake (HSC) (Cannabis sativa L.) is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, high-quality proteins and essential amino acids. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary inclusion of HSC on growth performance, meat quality traits, fatty acids profile and oxidative status, and intestinal morphology in slow-growing broilers. A total of 180 male slow-growing broilers were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments containing different levels of HSC: 0 (HSC0), 5 (HSC5) or 10% (HSC10). Birds were slaughtered at 49 days of age: breast and thigh muscles were analysed and duodenum mucosa histomorphological features were evaluated. Regardless the level of HSC inclusion, no differences among groups were found for performance and meat quality traits. The thigh and breast fatty acid profile were significantly improved in both HSC groups, with an increase of the long chain fatty acids of n-3 series and decrease of n-6/n-3 ratio. The HSC diets lowered the MDA concentration and lipid hydroperoxides in breast meat. Histomorphometrical analysis revealed a significant increase in villus height, surface area and villus/crypt ratio, with a decrease of crypt depth, suggesting that dietary supplementation with HSC may boost intestinal health status in poultry. In conclusion, dietary HSC did not affect performance, carcass traits and meat quality, while it positively influenced the lipid profile of meat, and improved the oxidative status and gut health, thus representing a valuable and sustainable alternative ingredient in broiler diet.

Abstract
α-tocopherol is a vitamin E isoform with potent antioxidant activity, while the γ-tocopherol isoform of vitamin E exerts more pro-inflammatory effects. In maternal-fetal environments, increased plasma α-tocopherol concentrations are associated with positive birth outcomes, while higher γ-tocopherol concentrations are linked with negative pregnancy outcomes. However, little is known about tocopherol concentrations in placental tissue and their role in modulating placental oxidative stress, a process that is implicated in many complications of pregnancy. The objectives of this research are to evaluate the concentrations of α- and γ-tocopherol in placental tissue and assess relationships with maternal and umbilical cord plasma concentrations. A total of 82 mother-infant dyads were enrolled at the time of delivery, and maternal and umbilical cord blood samples and placenta samples were collected. α- and γ-tocopherol concentrations in these samples were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). γ-tocopherol concentrations demonstrated significant, positive correlations among all sample types (p-values < 0.001). Placental tissue had a significantly lower ratio of α:γ-tocopherol concentrations when compared to maternal plasma and umbilical cord plasma (2.9 vs. 9.9 vs. 13.2, respectively; p < 0.001). Additional research should explore possible mechanisms for tocopherol storage and transfer in placental tissue and assess relationships between placental tocopherol concentrations and measures of maternal-fetal oxidative stress and clinical outcomes of pregnancy.

Abstract
This study employed solution crystallization in food engineering to prepare a high-purity vitamin intermediate, optimize its crystal morphology and regulate its particle size distribution. Model analysis was performed to investigate the quantitative correlations between the process variables and target parameters, indicating the substantial effect of temperature on separation performance. Under optimal conditions, the product purity exceeded 99.5%, which meets the requirement of the subsequent synthesis process. A high crystallization temperature reduced the agglomeration phenomenon and increased particle liquidity. Herein, we also proposed a temperature cycling strategy and a gassing crystallization routine to optimize the particle size. The results illustrated that the synergistic control of temperature and gassing crystallization could substantially improve the separation process. Overall, based on a high separation efficiency, this study combined model analysis and process intensification pathways to explore the process parameters on product properties such as purity, crystal morphology, and particle size distribution.

Abstract
Due to the documented health benefits of tocopherols and tocotrienols as bioactive compounds, it seems important to assess their intake. The aim of this study was to develop a new tool and its application for assessment of tocopherol and tocotrienol intake in adults. Dietary data were collected by semiquantitative FFQ (VitE-FFQ) and by a 1-day dietary record in a group of 447 subjects. The database of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) was used to calculate the individual isoforms of vitamin E and develop the tool-VIT_E.CAL. The assessment of measuring agreement between the two methods was conducted by analysis of the correlations and Bland-Altman plots. The average α-tocopherol intake was 11.3 mg/day for the data obtained using the FFQ method and 12.8 mg/day for the results obtained using the 1-day dietary record. Depending on the adopted recommendation, only 40-57% of the subjects had adequate vitamin E intake. The intake of α-tocopherol did not exceed the UL value in any of the respondents. The dominant forms of vitamin E in the diet of the studied group were α- and γ- forms (55% and 38% of the total sum) among tocopherols and β- and γ- forms (49% and 24% of the total sum) among tocotrienols. VIT_E.CAL allows us to calculate not only the total amount of vitamin E but also its eight isoforms. It can be a useful tool to assess individual and group intake of various forms of vitamin E in the diet. The use of VIT_E.CAL enables the proper assessment of vitamin E (as α-tocopherol and not α-tocopherol equivalent) in the diet of Poles, and most likely also in the European diet. The obtained results indicate the need to take into account the content of individual forms of vitamin E in food/diet, which will allow for a reliable assessment of its consumption. It also seems necessary to standardize the nomenclature regarding the name of vitamin E and its use for correct nutritional assessment.

Abstract
Aerobic organisms use molecular oxygen in several reactions, including those in which the oxidation of substrate molecules is coupled to oxygen reduction to produce large amounts of metabolic energy. The utilization of oxygen is associated with the production of ROS, which can damage biological macromolecules but also act as signaling molecules, regulating numerous cellular processes. Mitochondria are the cellular sites where most of the metabolic energy is produced and perform numerous physiological functions by acting as regulatory hubs of cellular metabolism. They retain the remnants of their bacterial ancestors, including an independent genome that encodes part of their protein equipment; they have an accurate quality control system; and control of cellular functions also depends on communication with the nucleus. During aging, mitochondria can undergo dysfunctions, some of which are mediated by ROS. In this review, after a description of how aging affects the mitochondrial quality and quality control system and the involvement of mitochondria in inflammation, we report information on how vitamin E, the main fat-soluble antioxidant, can protect mitochondria from age-related changes. The information in this regard is scarce and limited to some tissues and some aspects of mitochondrial alterations in aging. Improving knowledge of the effects of vitamin E on aging is essential to defining an optimal strategy for healthy aging.

Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, and its incidence is increasing. Diet has been identified as a modifiable risk factor for breast cancer, but the complex interplay between diet, metabolism, and cancer development is not fully understood. Nutritional metabolomics is a rapidly evolving field that can provide insights into the metabolic changes associated with dietary factors and their impact on breast cancer risk. The review's objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current research on the application of nutritional metabolomics in understanding the relationship between diet and breast cancer. The search strategy involved querying several electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The search terms included combinations of relevant keywords such as "nutritional metabolomics", "diet", "breast cancer", "metabolites", and "biomarkers". In this review, both in vivo and in vitro studies were included, and we summarize the current state of knowledge on the role of nutritional metabolomics in understanding the diet-breast cancer relationship, including identifying specific metabolites and metabolic pathways associated with breast cancer risk. We also discuss the challenges associated with nutritional metabolomics research, including standardization of analytical methods, interpretation of complex data, and integration of multiple-omics approaches. Finally, we highlight future directions for nutritional metabolomics research in studying diet-breast cancer relations, including investigating the role of gut microbiota and integrating multiple-omics approaches. The application of nutritional metabolomics in the study of diet-breast cancer relations, including 2-amino-4-cyano butanoic acid, piperine, caprate, rosten-3β,17β-diol-monosulfate, and γ-carboxyethyl hydrochroman, among others, holds great promise for advancing our understanding of the role of diet in breast cancer development and identifying personalized dietary recommendations for breast cancer prevention, control, and treatment.

Abstract
Tocotrienols have strong antioxidant properties; however, tocotrienol has not been investigated in detail in aquatic products. In this study, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the tocotrienol-rich fraction from rice bran oil and its potential mechanism were verified in a zebrafish CuSO4 inflammation model. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) stable radical method. The copper chelating activity was determined using the pyrocatechol violet method. Intracellular reactive oxygen species in zebrafish were detected using a fluorescent ROS probe. Transgenic Tg (lyz: DsRed2) zebrafish were used for neutrophil transmigration assays. The mRNA expression levels of antioxidant and pro-inflammatory factor genes were measured using quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR. In the concentration range tested, 100 μg/mL TRF had the highest copper chelating activity (10%). TRF showed DPPH-free radical scavenging ability, which was 53% at 100 μg/mL TRF. TRF effectively repressed ROS generation and inhibited neutrophil migration to the inflamed site. Moreover, TRF upregulated the expression of antioxidant genes sod and gpx4b, inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory factors tnfa and il8, and suppressed CuSO4-induced inflammation. In conclusion, TRF has significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which supports the use of TRF as an aquatic feed additive to improve the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of aquatic products.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to determine the relationship between dentition, mastication, salivation and nutritional intake in 90-year-old Japanese people. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 84 participants (39 men and 45 women) aged 90 years. We used questionnaires to collect demographic information, smoking status, nutritional intake and higher-level functional capacity. Nutritional intake was assessed using the validated Brief-Type Self-Administered Diet History Questionnaire, and higher-level functional capacity was assessed using the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG-IC) questionnaire. Oral examinations, masticatory performance tests, stimulated salivary flow rate (SSF) tests, blood tests, blood pressure tests and body mass index (BMI) assessments were conducted. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Multivariable linear regression analyses adjusted for sex, education, TMIG-IC and BMI ≤20 kg/m2 showed that participants with masticatory performance <173 mg/dL had lower intake of folic acid and vitamin A than those with masticatory performance ≥173 mg/dL. SSF was positively associated with intake of vitamin A. The number of teeth was positively associated with the intake of β-carotene. With smaller effect sizes, masticatory performance, SSF and number of teeth were also associated with the intake of various micronutrients and carbohydrates. CONCLUSION Lower masticatory performance, lower SSF and fewer teeth were associated with a lower intake of several micronutrients, such as vitamin A, β-carotene and folic acids, in Japanese individuals of advanced age. Oral health practitioners should pay careful attention to the nutritional intake of older people with poor mastication, dry mouth and severe tooth loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone mineral density (BMD) alterations in response to multivitamin exposure were rarely studied. Our study assessed the association of coexposure to six types of vitamins (i.e., vitamins B12, B9, C, D, A and E) with BMD measurements in adults in the US. METHODS Data were collected from participants aged ≥ 20 years (n = 2757) in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) from 2005 to 2006. Multiple linear regression, restricted cubic splines, principal component analysis (PCA) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were performed for statistical analysis. RESULTS The circulating levels of vitamins B12 and C were positively associated with BMDs, and an inverted L-shaped exposure relationship was observed between serum vitamin C and BMDs. PCA identified two principal components: one for 'water-soluble vitamins', including vitamins B12, B9 and C, and one for 'fat-soluble vitamins', including vitamins A, D and E. The former was positively associated with total femur (β = 0.009, 95%CI: 0.004, 0.015) and femoral neck (β = 0.007, 95%CI: 0.002, 0.013) BMDs, and the latter was negatively associated with BMDs with non-statistical significance. The WQS index constructed for the six vitamins was significantly related to total femur (β = 0.010, 95%CI: 0.001, 0.018) and femoral neck (β = 0.008, 95%CI: 0.001, 0.015) BMDs, and vitamins B12 and C weighted the most. The WQS index was inversely related to BMDs with non-statistical significance, and vitamins E and A weighted the most. CONCLUSION Our findings suggested a positive association between water-soluble vitamin coexposure and BMD, and the association was mainly driven by vitamins B12 and C. Negative association between fat-soluble vitamin coexposure and BMD was indicated, mainly driven by vitamins E and A. An inverted L-shaped exposure relationship was found between vitamin C and BMD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin E has been investigated for its antitumor potential, including the ability to change cancer gene pathways as well as promote antioxidant and pro-oxidant activity. OBJECTIVE Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate antitumor and chemopreventive activity of different vitamin E isoforms (tocopherols and tocotrienols) through in vitro and in vivo studies. METHOD The systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (No. CRD4202126207) and the search was carried out in four electronic databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science) in June 2021 by three independent reviewers. The search equation used was: "Supplementation" AND ("Vitamin E" OR Tocopherol OR Tocotrienol) AND "breast cancer" AND (chemotherapy OR therapy OR prevention). In vitro studies and animal models of breast cancer supplemented with tocopherol or tocotrienol vitamers, alone or in combination, were included. RESULTS The results revealed 8546 relevant studies that were initially identified in our search. After analysis, a total of 12 studies were eligible for this systematic review. All studies included animal models, and 5 of them also performed in vitro experiments on cancer cell lines. The studies performed supplementation with tocopherols, mixtures (tocopherols and tocotrienols) and synthetic vitamin E forms. There was an significant association of estradiol, dendritic cells and pterostilbene in combined therapy with vitamin E. Vitamin E delayed tumor development, reduced tumor size, proliferation, viability, expression of anti-apoptotic and cell proliferation genes, and upregulated pro-apoptotic genes, tumor suppressor genes and increased immune response. The effects on oxidative stress markers and antioxidant activity were conflicting among studies. Only one study with synthetic vitamin E reported cardiotoxicity, but it did not show vitamin E genotoxicity. CONCLUSION In conclusion, vitamin E isoforms, isolated or associated, showed antitumor and chemopreventive activity. However, due to studies heterogeneity, there is a need for further analysis to establish dose, form, supplementation time and breast cancer stage.

INTRODUCTION Bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescence is a crucial determinant in osteoporosis and fragility fractures in older age. Vitamin E is the most abundant lipid-soluble antioxidant present in the blood. However, the association of vitamin E status with BMD in children and adolescents remains unclear. METHODS We first measured the association of vitamin E status (serum α- and γ tocopherol) with BMD in children and adolescents with the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multiple linear regression models were performed to evaluate their relationship after adjusting for a large range of covariates. Stratified analyses and interaction tests were used to explore their effects on different genders, ages, and races/ethnicities. RESULTS 13,606 children and adolescents from NHANES (2005-2006, 2017-2018) were included in our analysis. Compared with the lowest α-tocopherol quartile, individuals in the highest α-tocopherol quartile are likelier to be Non-Hispanic White and have a higher value of poverty income ratio (PIR). They have a lower value of serum phosphorus and lumbar spine BMD. Every 1umol/L increase in serum α- and γ- tocopherol, the lumbar spine BMD decreased by -0.0016 and -0.0068 g/cm2. Compared with the lowest quartile serum α- and γ- tocopherol concentration, individuals in the highest quartile have a -0.0223 and -0.0329 g/cm2 lower mean BMD, respectively. Interaction effects suggest that the negative effect is more prominent among female youth, individuals aged 8-13 years, non-Hispanic whites, Mexican Americans, and non-Hispanic blacks. CONCLUSIONS Our study indicates serum α- and γ-tocopherol are negatively correlated with lumbar BMD. Age, gender, and race may have a modifying effect on this relationship. Our study has an important clinical implication. A higher vitamin E status for children and adolescents could not improve BMD, even decrease BMD. More prospective research with stronger evidence is needed to verify our findings and their underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Vitamin E is a group of antioxidative tocopherols and tocotrienols that play a potential role in chemoprevention. Studies investigating the association between vitamin E and prostate cancer risk have been conflicting. We identified observational and interventional studies examining the association between vitamin E intake and prostate cancer risk from PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library. A random-effects model was used to perform a meta-analysis and estimate relative risks (RRs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of prostate cancer risk according to vitamin E intake. Subgroup analyses were conducted by study design, sample size, study population characteristics, geographical region, and dose of vitamin E intake. The association between dietary (RR = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.92-1.02) and supplemental (RR = 0.99; 95% CI = 0.94-1.04) vitamin E intake on prostate cancer risk was non-significant. In subgroup analyses, supplemental vitamin E was significantly associated with reduced prostate cancer risk in studies in Europe (RR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.69-0.97). Overall, this meta-analysis demonstrates little evidence for a beneficial effect of vitamin E intake on prostate cancer risk but suggests that there may be some conditions in which supplements could confer a protective effect on prostate cancer risk.

This review focuses on the enzymatic antioxidant mechanisms to fight oxidative stress by spermatozoa, highlighting the differences among mammalian species. We discuss recent evidence about players that promote and fight oxidative stress and the need for novel strategies to diagnose and treat cases of male infertility associated with oxidative damage of the spermatozoon.
Abstract
The spermatozoon is very sensitive to high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels due to its limited antioxidant system. A consortium of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidases (GPXs), peroxiredoxins (PRDXs), thioredoxins, and glutathione-S-transferases, is necessary to produce healthy spermatozoa and to maintain sperm quality to ensure motility, capacitation, and DNA integrity. A delicate balance between ROS production and antioxidant enzymes is needed to ensure ROS-dependent sperm capacitation. GPX4 is an essential component of the mitochondrial sheath in mammalian spermatozoa, and GPX5 is a crucial antioxidant defence in the mouse epididymis to protect the sperm genome during the maturation of the spermatozoon. The mitochondrial superoxide (O2·–) production is controlled by SOD2, and the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generated by SOD2 activity and peroxynitrite (ONOO–) are scavenged mainly by PRDXs in human spermatozoa. PRDXs regulate the redox signalling necessary for sperm motility and capacitation, particularly by PRDX6. This enzyme is the first line of defence against oxidative stress to prevent lipid peroxidation and DNA oxidation by scavenging H2O2 and ONOO– through its peroxidase activity and repairing oxidized membranes by its calcium-independent phospholipase A2 activity. The success of antioxidant therapy in treating infertility resides in the proper diagnosis of the presence of oxidative stress and which type of ROS are produced. Thus, more research on the molecular mechanisms affected by oxidative stress, the development of novel diagnostic tools to identify infertile patients with oxidative stress, and randomized controlled trials are of paramount importance to generate personalized antioxidant therapy to restore male fertility.

Abstract
Healing wounds is an important attempt to keep the internal higher organs safe. Complications in topical wound healing may lead to the formation of scars, which can affect the patient's quality of life. Although several approaches are ongoing in parallel in the exploration of natural compounds via advanced delivery, in this article, an attempt has been made to highlight tocotrienol. Tocotrienol is a natural form of vitamin E and has shown its potential in certain pharmacological activities better than tocopherol. Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cell signal-mediating effects, angiogenic properties, management of scar, and promotion of wound environment with essential factors have shown potential in the management of topical wound healing. Therefore, this review has aimed to focus on recent advances in topical wound healing through the application of tocotrienols. Challenges in delivering tocotrienols to the topical wound due to its large molecular weight and higher logP have also been explored using nanotechnological-based carriers, which has made tocotrienol a potential tool to facilitate the closure of wounds. Exploration of tocotrienol has also been made in human volunteers for biopsy wounds; however, the results are yet to be reported. Overall, based on the current findings in the literature, it could be inferred that tocotrienol would be a viable alternative to the existing wound dressing components for the management of topical wounds.

Abstract
Osteoporosis, or bone loss, is a disease that affects many women globally. As life expectancy increases, the risk of osteoporosis in women also increases, too, and this will create a burden on the healthcare and economic sectors of a country. Osteoporosis was once thought to be a disease that would occur only after menopause. However, many studies have shown that osteoporosis may develop even in the perimenopausal stage. Due to the erratic levels of estrogen and progesterone during the perimenopausal stage, studies suggest that women are exposed to the risk of developing osteoporosis even at this stage. The erratic hormonal changes result in the production of proinflammatory mediators and cause oxidative stress, which leads to the progressive loss of bone-building activities. Tocotrienols, members of vitamin E, have many health-promoting properties. Due to their powerful anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, tocotrienols have shown positive anti-osteoporotic properties in post-menopausal studies. Hence, we propose here that tocotrienols could also possibly alleviate perimenopausal osteoporosis by discussing in this review the connection between inflammatory mediators produced during perimenopause and the risk of osteoporosis. Tocotrienols could potentially be an anti-osteoporotic agent, but due to their low bioavailability, they have not been as effective as they could be. Several approaches have been evaluated to overcome this issue, as presented in this review. As the anti-osteoporotic effects of tocotrienols were mostly studied in post-menopausal models, we hope that this review could pave the way for more research to be done to evaluate their effect on peri-menopausal models so as to reduce the risk of osteoporosis from an earlier stage.

Abstract
The levels of the thousands of metabolites in the human plasma metabolome are strongly influenced by an individual's genetics and the composition of their diet and gut microbiome. Here, by assessing 1,183 plasma metabolites in 1,368 extensively phenotyped individuals from the Lifelines DEEP and Genome of the Netherlands cohorts, we quantified the proportion of inter-individual variation in the plasma metabolome explained by different factors, characterizing 610, 85 and 38 metabolites as dominantly associated with diet, the gut microbiome and genetics, respectively. Moreover, a diet quality score derived from metabolite levels was significantly associated with diet quality, as assessed by a detailed food frequency questionnaire. Through Mendelian randomization and mediation analyses, we revealed putative causal relationships between diet, the gut microbiome and metabolites. For example, Mendelian randomization analyses support a potential causal effect of Eubacterium rectale in decreasing plasma levels of hydrogen sulfite-a toxin that affects cardiovascular function. Lastly, based on analysis of the plasma metabolome of 311 individuals at two time points separated by 4 years, we observed a positive correlation between the stability of metabolite levels and the amount of variance in the levels of that metabolite that could be explained in our analysis. Altogether, characterization of factors that explain inter-individual variation in the plasma metabolome can help design approaches for modulating diet or the gut microbiome to shape a healthy metabolome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Vitamin E is essential for health, and although vitamin E deficiency seems rare in humans, studies on estimates of dietary intake are lacking. This study aimed to estimate dietary vitamin E intake, evaluate dietary adequacy of vitamin E, and detail major food sources of vitamin E in the Korean population. SUBJECTS/METHODS This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2019. Individuals aged ≥ 1 year that participated in a nutrition survey (n = 28,418) were included. Dietary intake was assessed by 24-h recall and individual dietary vitamin E intake was estimated using a newly established vitamin E database. Dietary adequacy was evaluated by comparing dietary intake with adequate intake (AI) as defined by Korean Dietary Reference Intakes 2020. RESULTS For all study subjects, mean daily total vitamin E intake was 7.00 mg α-tocopherol equivalents, which was 61.6% of AI. The proportion of individuals that consumed vitamin E at above the AI was 12.9%. Inadequate intake was observed more in females, older individuals, rural residents, and those with a low income. Mean daily intakes of tocopherol (α-, β-, γ-, and δ-forms) and tocotrienol were 6.02, 0.30, 6.19, 1.63, and 1.61 mg, respectively. The major food groups that contributed to total dietary vitamin E intake were grains (22.3%), seasonings (17.0%), vegetables (15.3%), and fish, and shellfish (7.4%). The top 5 individual food items that contributed to total vitamin E intake were baechu kimchi, red pepper powder, eggs, soybean oil, and rice. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that mean dietary vitamin E intake by Koreans did not meet the reference adequate intake value. To better understand the status of vitamin E intake, further research is needed that considers intake from dietary supplements.

Abstract
Significance: Spermatozoa are complex and compartmentalized cells that undergo capacitation, a series of biochemical and morphological changes to acquire the ability to fertilize oocytes. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have a prominent dual role in capacitation. At physiological levels, ROS regulate numerous cellular processes, including increases of cyclic adenosine monophosphate, calcium, and activation of phosphorylation events needed for capacitation. On the contrary, at high concentrations that do not impair sperm viability, ROS can cause loss of motility and inhibition of capacitation. Higher ROS concentrations promote oxidation of lipids, proteins, and DNA leading to cell death, and these damages have been associated with male infertility. Critical Issues: When incubated under specific conditions, spermatozoa can produce low and controlled amounts of ROS that are not harmful but instead regulate numerous cellular processes, including the phosphorylation of tyrosine, serine, and threonine residues in critical proteins needed for sperm capacitation. Here, we outline the complex redox signaling in human spermatozoa needed to achieve fertility and the role of ROS as physiological mediators that trigger phosphorylation cascades. Moreover, we illustrate the importance of various phosphoproteins in spermatozoa capacitation, viability, and hyperactive motility. Future Directions: Further studies to elucidate the different phosphorylation players during sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction (the regulated exocytotic event that releases proteolytic enzymes allowing the spermatozoon to penetrate the zona pellucida and fertilize the oocyte) are essential to understand how the spermatozoon acquires the fertilizing ability to fertilize the oocyte. Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship of dietary vitamin E intake with incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) was not clear as yet. We aimed to examine the associations of dietary total vitamin E and tocopherol isoforms intakes with incident CKD in a 30-year follow-up study from young adulthood to midlife. METHODS A total of 4038 American adults aged 18-30 years and without reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were enrolled from Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study. Diet was evaluated by a validated dietary-history questionnaire at baseline, and after 7 and 20 years later. The study outcome was incident CKD, defined as an eGFR<60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or a urinary albumin to creatinine ratio ≥30 mg/g. RESULTS During a 30-year follow-up, 642 (15.9%) participants developed incident CKD. Overall, there was a L-shaped relationship between dietary total vitamin E intake and incident CKD (P for non-linearity<0.001). When total vitamin E intake was assessed as quartiles, compared with those in the first quartile (<4.35 mg α-TE/1000 kcal), the adjusted HRs (95%CI) of incident CKD for participants in the fourth quartile (≥9.61 mg α-TE/1000 kcal) was 0.55 (0.40, 0.75). Moreover, higher intakes of beta-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol were significantly associated with a lower incident CKD. Higher intake of delta-tocopherol was significantly related to a higher incident CKD. And there was no obvious association of alpha-tocopherol intake with incident CKD. CONCLUSIONS There were inverse associations of total vitamin E, beta-tocopherol and gamma-tocopherol intakes, a positive association of delta-tocopherol intake, and no obvious association of alpha-tocopherol intake, with incident CKD among American adults.

Abstract
Thermal burn injuries are still a serious public health concern in the United States, due to the initial insult and resulting comorbidities. Burned patients are increasingly susceptible to colonization by endogenous and exogenous microorganisms after having lost skin, which acts as the primary protective barrier to environmental contaminants. Furthermore, the onset of additional pathophysiologies, specifically sepsis, becomes more likely in burned patients compared to other injuries. Despite improvements in the early care of burn patients, infections, and sepsis, these pathophysiologies remain major causes of morbidity and mortality and warrant further investigation of potential therapies. Vitamin E may be one such therapy. We aimed to identify publications of studies that evaluated the effectiveness of vitamin E as it pertains to thermal burn injuries, infection, and sepsis. Several investigations ranging from in vitro bench work to clinical studies have examined the impact on, or influence of, vitamin E in vitro, in vivo, and in the clinical setting. To the benefit of subjects it has been shown that enteral or parenteral vitamin E supplementation can prevent, mitigate, and even reverse the effects of thermal burn injuries, infection, and sepsis. Therefore, a large-scale prospective observational study to assess the potential benefits of vitamin E supplementation in patients is warranted and could result in clinical care practice paradigm changes.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is generated by the imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and antioxidant scavenger system’s activity. Increased ROS, such as superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite, likely contribute to the development and complications of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). In genetically modified mouse models of atherosclerosis, the overexpression of ROS-generating enzymes and uncontrolled ROS formation appear to be associated with accelerated atherosclerosis. Conversely, the overexpression of ROS scavenger systems reduces or stabilizes atherosclerotic lesions, depending on the genetic background of the mouse model. In humans, higher levels of circulating biomarkers derived from the oxidation of lipids (8-epi-prostaglandin F2α, and malondialdehyde), as well as proteins (oxidized low-density lipoprotein, nitrotyrosine, protein carbonyls, advanced glycation end-products), are increased in conditions of high cardiovascular risk or overt ASCVD, and some oxidation biomarkers have been reported as independent predictors of ASCVD in large observational cohorts. In animal models, antioxidant supplementation with melatonin, resveratrol, Vitamin E, stevioside, acacetin and n-polyunsaturated fatty acids reduced ROS and attenuated atherosclerotic lesions. However, in humans, evidence from large, placebo-controlled, randomized trials or prospective studies failed to show any athero-protective effect of antioxidant supplementation with different compounds in different CV settings. However, the chronic consumption of diets known to be rich in antioxidant compounds (e.g., Mediterranean and high-fish diet), has shown to reduce ASCVD over decades. Future studies are needed to fill the gap between the data and targets derived from studies in animals and their pathogenetic and therapeutic significance in human ASCVD.

Abstract
Food waste, such as eggshell, can be an environmental problem if it is not properly managed. One of the ways to solve this is by using the eggshell as the cheap calcium source in food products. Polish gingerbread fortified with chicken eggshell powder (ESP) calcium was developed to solve the eggshell waste problem and to reduce the risk of osteoporosis. This study focused on the effect of ESP addition on basic composition, sensory evaluation, and antioxidative activity of gingerbread. Two samples of gingerbread without and with 3% (w/w of wheat flour) ESP, with controlled green tea powder (4% w/w of white chocolate) were analyzed. Results of the research showed that the addition of 3% ESP significantly increased the ash and calcium content (p < 0.05) without changing the appearance, aroma, texture, taste profiles, and the hedonic score of gingerbread. The gingerbread samples were then stored for 2 months and were analyzed every month. The hedonic evaluation of the aroma of both gingerbread samples decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during storage. During 2 months of storage, the antioxidative activity of gingerbread fortified with 3% ESP was not significantly different compared to the control (p > 0.05), particularly in ABTS and ORACFL assay. The ABTS, DPPH, and ORACFL assays showed decreasing antioxidative activity during storage, which was also in accordance with decreasing total phenolic content of both gingerbread samples. In PCL assay, the lipid-soluble antioxidant activity in gingerbread with 3% ESP was significantly higher during 2 months of storage, compared to the control (p < 0.05). The developed product might be a potential alternative to improve the calcium (26% daily value (DV) recommendation per 100 g) and antioxidant intake in order to prevent calcium deficiency. Gingerbread enriched with an organic source of calcium may become an innovative product to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis in the elderly population, having potential health and economic significance, given the incidence of osteoporosis and the costs of treating this disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The role of vitamin E in chronic disease risk remains incompletely understood, particularly in an un-supplemented state, and evidence is sparse regarding the biological actions and pathways involved in its influence on health outcomes. Identifying vitamin-E-associated metabolites through agnostic metabolomics analyses can contribute to elucidating the specific associations and disease etiology. This study aims to investigate the association between circulating metabolites and serum α-tocopherol concentration in an un-supplemented state. SUBJECTS/METHODS Metabolomic analysis of 4,294 male participants was conducted based on pre-supplementation fasting serum in the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study. The associations between 1,791 known metabolites measured by ultra-high-performance LC-MS/GC-MS and HPLC-determined α-tocopherol concentration were estimated using multivariable linear regression. Differences in metabolite levels per unit difference in α-tocopherol concentration were calculated as standardized β-coefficients and standard errors. RESULTS A total of 252 metabolites were associated with serum α-tocopherol at the Bonferroni-corrected p value (p < 2.79 × 10-5). Most of these metabolites were of lipid and amino acid origin, with the respective subclasses of dicarboxylic fatty acids, and valine, leucine, and isoleucine metabolism, being highly represented. Among lipids, the strongest signals were observed for linoleoyl-arachidonoyl-glycerol (18:2/20:4)[2](β = 0.149; p = 8.65 × 10-146) and sphingomyelin (D18:2/18:1) (β = 0.035; p = 1.36 × 10-30). For amino acids, the strongest signals were aminoadipic acid (β = 0.021; p = 5.01 × 10-13) and l-leucine (β = 0.007; p = 1.05 × 10-12). CONCLUSIONS The large number of metabolites, particularly lipid and amino acid compounds associated with serum α-tocopherol provide leads regarding potential mechanisms through which vitamin E influences human health, including its role in cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Abstract
Peppers are grown all around the world, usually for fresh consumption, as well as for the industrial production of different products. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seeds are mostly considered a by-product. Recent investigations have shown that pepper seeds have the potential to be a valuable source of edible oil and fiber-rich flour and protein after processing. Pepper seed oil is a high-quality edible oil according to quality analysis (nutritional, chemical, sensory and antioxidant characteristics) and is suitable as an ingredient for use in the food and nonfood industries (pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic industries). The literature review presented in this paper revealed the high quality of two pepper seed by-products (pepper seed oil and pepper seed flour (Capsicum annuum L.)), which could guide the food industry toward new product development based on the circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate nutrition in climbing perch Anabas testudineus which is an important nutritious economic freshwater fish in Asia and compare with Carassius auratus (crucian carp). Three kinds of tissues, including muscle, livers, and eggs, were isolated, respectively. Physicochemical properties including moisture, ash, protein, amino acids, fat, vitamins, and calcium contents in those tissues were determined. The results showed climbing perch muscle and liver contained less moisture, but more protein, amino acids, and vitamins than crucian carp muscle and liver. While moisture, ash, protein, and total amino acids contents of climbing perch egg were lower than those of crucian carp egg. Climbing perch egg had more fat, vitamins, and calcium than crucian carp egg. The amino acid profile was also performed, and 16 amino acids were identified and quantified in muscle, liver, and egg. Among tissues, the highest and lowest concentration of total amino acid content was found in crucian carp eggs and livers, respectively. Glutamic acid (Glu) and histidine (His) were the most and least amino acids in climbing perch and crucian carp tissues, respectively. Sixteen amino acids in climbing perch egg were less than those in crucian carp egg while it is an opposite case in muscle and liver, which amino acids of climbing perch tissues were more than those of crucian carp muscle and liver. Vitamin A of climbing perch was more than crucian carp in all three tissues, but vitamin E content in climbing perch liver was lower than that of crucian carp liver. Calcium content of muscle had no difference between two species. The abovementioned comparison of physicochemical properties of different tissues from China climbing perch and crucian carp will provide a necessary supplementary of freshwater muscle nutrition research, also was helpful for application of climbing perch.

Abstract
Objective: Investigate the relationship between serum α-tocopherol concentration and long-term risk of prostate cancer, and evaluate the interaction with vitamin E–related genetic variants and their polygenic risk score (PRS). Methods: We conducted a biochemical analysis of 29 102 male Finnish smokers in the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study. Serum α-tocopherol was measured at baseline using high-performance liquid chromatography, and 2 724 prostate cancer cases were identified during 28 years of follow-up. Cox proportional hazards models examined whether serum α-tocopherol concentrations were associated with prostate cancer risk. Among 8 383 participants, three SNPs related to vitamin E status (rs964184, rs2108622, and rs11057830) were examined to determine whether they modified the relationship between serum α-tocopherol concentrations and prostate cancer risk, both individually and as a PRS using logistic regression models. Results: No association was observed between serum α-tocopherol and prostate cancer risk (fifth quintile (Q5) versus Q1 hazard ratio (HR)=0.87, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.75, 1.02; p-trend=0.57). Though no interactions were seen by population characteristics, high α-tocopherol concentration was associated with reduced prostate cancer risk among the trial α-tocopherol supplementation group (Q5 quintile versus Q1 HR=0.79, 95% CI 0.64, 0.99). Finally, no associated interaction between the three SNPs or their PRS and prostate cancer risk was observed. Conclusion: Although there was a weak inverse association between α-tocopherol concentration and prostate cancer risk over nearly three decades, our findings suggest that men receiving the trial α-tocopherol supplementation who had higher baseline serum α-tocopherol concentration experienced reduced prostate cancer risk. Vitamin E–related genotypes did not modify the serum α-tocopherol-prostate cancer risk association.
